Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Florida State in Trouble? Geoff Collins Breaks Down LSU, Alabama & College Football Week 1 | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our buddy Jeff Collins, former college coach, right now taking
- 0:04Speaker 1: a year away from the game to join us in
- 0:06Speaker 1: the media. Will join us in segment number two today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We'll get into more LSU as they rise up the board.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We'll get a new AP poll today. We'll see how
- 0:16Speaker 1: many people agree with Brown on the fact that LSU
- 0:19Speaker 1: should be number one. We'll get into all the other
- 0:23Speaker 1: college football stuff. We'll even tell you who we think
- 0:25Speaker 1: is going to win the MVP in the NFL today.
- 0:30Speaker 1: which starts tomorrow night. But one day without football today
- 0:33Speaker 1: with plenty of reaction as we get going on the
- 0:36Speaker 1: next round presented by Hard Rock Bets right here on
- 0:38Speaker 1: Sporting State. Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor, Ryan Brown. The guys
- 0:42Speaker 1: behind the glass, that's Forrester back left, Brooks back right,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and the Minister of Defense, that's Tyler right there punching
- 0:48Speaker 1: the board.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Top screen right there. Good morning, guys. Hope you're doing well.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Last night, there's no way in hell if I was
- 0:56Speaker 1: Rhett Lashley, I would have signed off on playing that
- 0:59Speaker 1: game under the conditions that they were going to play
- 1:03Speaker 1: that game. The lighting didn't bother me so much. I
- 1:05Speaker 1: would imagine lighting now so much better that the few
- 1:09Speaker 1: lights they had last night would have been the equivalent
- 1:11Speaker 1: of lighting in the 1900s, in 1994 or something. 95%
- 1:17Speaker 1: of high schools will play with worse lights.
- 1:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:20Speaker 1: But you can't tell me that it wasn't going to
- 1:24Speaker 1: be scary going into the game with the power outage
- 1:27Speaker 1: and we're going to play a game where I can't
- 1:29Speaker 1: talk to my quarterback when we haven't practiced that in
- 1:32Speaker 1: two years, said Rhett Lashley. The iPads on the sidelines
- 1:38Speaker 1: didn't bother me so much. But a guy in the
- 1:42Speaker 1: sky talking down to me, that was limited. There were
- 1:45Speaker 1: so many things limited. I don't know if I'd have
- 1:48Speaker 1: played the game, but hats off to Rhett Lashley. I
- 1:51Speaker 1: thought he handled it like a superstar, and they win
- 1:53Speaker 1: the game.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, look, Kevin Jennings, you can see how talented the
- 1:58Speaker 3: guy is and all of his career starts.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And the experience. He can't really.
- 2:02Speaker 3: account for experience. You can't put a price on experience.
- 2:06Speaker 3: He was really, really good outside of the turnovers. They
- 2:08Speaker 3: don't turn the football over. They win that game by
- 2:10Speaker 3: 14 plus.
- 2:12Speaker 2: LT, 4-0. I mean, take away that.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that one at the end, you can't count. But
- 2:17Speaker 1: 4-0 in the turnover battle. How many times do you
- 2:19Speaker 1: win a game on the road when you lose the
- 2:21Speaker 1: turnover battle 4-0?
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, this is kind of what I
- 2:24Speaker 3: was hoping that Florida State would make it sloppy. Some
- 2:27Speaker 3: big explosive plays, turning Kevin Jennings over. We had Florida
- 2:30Speaker 3: State plus points. ended up escaping, getting that thing at
- 2:33Speaker 3: three and a half. But, man, it ended up being
- 2:36Speaker 3: a really fun game. What I take from it, if
- 2:39Speaker 3: SMU can figure out a way to stop the run,
- 2:42Speaker 3: run the ball a little more effectively and not turn
- 2:44Speaker 3: it over, they're going to be really good.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Florida State is bad.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 2: They're just a bad football team.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean, when a team comes to your place and
- 2:50Speaker 1: gives you four turnovers– and you can't win the game. Oh,
- 2:54Speaker 1: that's the most damning thing of the whole night.
- 2:55Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 2:56Speaker 2: No doubt. Well, here's the combination.
- 2:57Speaker 1: One of the turnovers here, I'm sorry, Lance, but one
- 2:59Speaker 1: of the turnovers, when you muff a punt, that's almost
- 3:02Speaker 1: like two turnovers because of the field position, right? I mean,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you're giving the team, you're playing at probably minimum 35
- 3:10Speaker 1: yards of field position, if not 40, 45 yards of
- 3:13Speaker 1: field position. So that's almost like two turnovers there. I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 1: that's such a bad turnover.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You do nothing with it. Lance, take me back. Take
- 3:19Speaker 2: me back, and Brownie, chime in. I can't think.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I can't think of the last time I've heard a
- 3:25Speaker 1: home crowd, especially in week one, booing the way they
- 3:30Speaker 1: were booing play calling right after that turnover when they
- 3:32Speaker 1: were running the ball on third down in the red zone.
- 3:36Speaker 2: The boos were raining down. I can never remember.
- 3:40Speaker 3: We've said Dan Midwalking all summer, and we had Danny
- 3:43Speaker 3: Connell on, Florida State alum, a couple of weeks ago,
- 3:45Speaker 3: and asking him about the uncomfortable, awkward situation this is
- 3:49Speaker 3: for Mike Norvell.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But wow.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I mean, you're right there neck and neck with a
- 3:52Speaker 3: top 20 team, and you are booing your coach.
- 3:55Speaker 2: At least show support.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Once we get into October and you're 1-4, you can
- 4:00Speaker 3: start booing at that point.
- 4:01Speaker 2: But look, clean slate. You're 1-0.
- 4:04Speaker 3: You're very much in this game. I didn't understand the booing,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and it was nonstop, and it was awkward.
- 4:08Speaker 2: It really is. I don't know about you guys, but.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It's been a great year for the Taylors so far
- 4:15Speaker 1: in college football. Lance Taylor, not this one, Western Michigan,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and then Taylor Tannenbaum, friend of the show, anchoring that
- 4:22Speaker 1: coverage for the power outage. Then Taylor, the other Taylor
- 4:26Speaker 1: that was the sideline reporter. She was really good, by
- 4:27Speaker 1: the way. She was fantastic getting all the information. She
- 4:29Speaker 1: kept giving us all these behind-the-scenes updates. Yeah, updates, talking
- 4:32Speaker 1: to the White Hat and Rhett Lashley. But during the
- 4:35Speaker 1: power outage, the crowd was at, because Jimbo Fisher was
- 4:37Speaker 1: on with Taylor Tannenbaum sitting on the desk, and they
- 4:40Speaker 1: started chanting. We want Jimbo.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. We want Jimbo.
- 4:45Speaker 3: We want subtitles to understand what Jimbo's saying.
- 4:49Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, they want Mike out and Jimbo back. Well,
- 4:54Speaker 2: I mean, look, it would be an upgrade. That's what
- 4:56Speaker 2: I was going to say.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You've got a really bad quarterback, you've got a really
- 4:59Speaker 3: bad head coach, and you've got an awful secondary. So, like,
- 5:03Speaker 3: Florida State. gave out the under five and a half
- 5:06Speaker 3: and loved this. They might get to three wins. That's
- 5:08Speaker 3: about as good as they can play last night.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And listen, I've never met Mike Norvell. So he may
- 5:14Speaker 1: be the greatest guy in the world. But he does
- 5:17Speaker 1: so many things that I don't like. It's fingernails across
- 5:23Speaker 1: a chalkboard for me. And one of them, in one
- 5:25Speaker 1: of them, is gathering that team up before they go
- 5:28Speaker 1: into the locker room.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That is so high school. It drives me freaking crazy.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Me too.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I saw him doing it, and I'm like, God, are
- 5:32Speaker 1: we back in high school? Actually, my first thought was
- 5:35Speaker 1: the power may be off in their locker room.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah. They may have to do it. Because he's always
- 5:40Speaker 2: cooler outside than inside. Yeah. He does it all the time.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It's so high school, Harry.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And you know how I know the team's not bought
- 5:46Speaker 1: in on that? Because they're showing him trying to gather
- 5:49Speaker 1: them up, and he's like gathering them up, and he's
- 5:51Speaker 1: still having to get around the crowd.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, Joe, Tony, Tony, come over here.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Everybody, come over here.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And listen, I'm at college stadiums a lot. You guys
- 5:59Speaker 1: have been there. If I'm, okay, that front row of guys,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you hear him okay. That next wave of guys, maybe.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Those guys in the back, they can't hear what he's saying.
- 6:09Speaker 1: There's so much noise inside the stadium. That's all for looks.
- 6:12Speaker 6: It is.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It's all for looks. It drives me crazy. That is
- 6:15Speaker 2: so high school. Let's get in the locker room. Let's
- 6:16Speaker 2: get on the whiteboard. Yep, I'm with you.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And they've got to, I mean, the Cromaw kid can run.
- 6:21Speaker 3: They've got good backs. Back-to-back, 100-yard game. Samuel Singleton's a player.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Deuce Robinson, you know, former USC guy a couple of
- 6:29Speaker 3: years ago. I don't understand.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They ain't got a quarterback.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He's going to get buried. I mean, he's 6'6, 230 pounds.
- 6:34Speaker 3: His catch radius is massive. He is a red zone
- 6:39Speaker 3: massive threat when it comes to the next level. But
- 6:41Speaker 3: nobody's going to know who he is because the quarterback
- 6:43Speaker 3: plays so well.
- 6:44Speaker 2: So their NIL isn't broke. No, it can't be with
- 6:46Speaker 2: those guys.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Because they got Deuce Robinson. They got Wisner out of
- 6:49Speaker 1: Texas who they barely get the ball to. And they
- 6:52Speaker 1: paid him a lot.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I think. Dwiser didn't get a touch last night, did he? Yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and he was good.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I watched way more of that New Mexico State game
- 6:58Speaker 1: for them. Takes a quarterback to get the ball to him. Jim,
- 7:01Speaker 1: if you're spending that kind of money in the portal,
- 7:03Speaker 1: how is Ashton Daniels the quarterback you end up with?
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's what blows me away about Florida State. Mike Norvell,
- 7:09Speaker 1: absolutely coaching for his job, right? I mean, nobody thinks otherwise.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Mike Norvell knows he's coaching for his job. This is
- 7:16Speaker 1: the year that could save your job, and you scan
- 7:18Speaker 1: the whole portal, and Ashton Daniels is what you come with.
- 7:23Speaker 2: He was the best quarterback at Auburn last year. that
- 7:26Speaker 2: ain't that's a sad indictment.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I know but he was i mean that's a fact
- 7:31Speaker 1: let's say nothing yeah yes yeah he was yeah i
- 7:34Speaker 1: mean and he i mean he creates some plays but
- 7:37Speaker 1: i don't think he's a great thrower of the football
- 7:39Speaker 1: you don't really i don't think jim he throws the
- 7:41Speaker 1: ball this.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Is exactly the ashton daniels we saw a few years
- 7:44Speaker 3: ago at stanford.
- 7:45Speaker 1: It's the ashton daniels you warned auburn fans about when
- 7:47Speaker 1: they were like okay now maybe you know maybe this
- 7:50Speaker 1: guy's a You know, promising guy. And look, he had
- 7:53Speaker 1: that one game against Vanderbilt. I'll never understand it, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: that one game against Vanderbilt. So that's why they ran
- 7:56Speaker 1: the ball so much last night.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Because they can't throw it?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Because throwing is an adventure. I don't know if SMU
- 8:03Speaker 1: can run it.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That's what I was saying.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I don't know if they can run it, if they
- 8:06Speaker 3: can stop the run and don't turn it over. I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 3: that's a lot to clean up after week one. But
- 8:10Speaker 3: they did survive what was just an absolute mess for SMU.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Because at times, you know, Kevin Jennings played really, really
- 8:17Speaker 3: well and just A couple of just uncharacteristic turnovers for
- 8:20Speaker 3: Kevin Jennings. I think SMU is going to be fine.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I think that's about as good as you're going to
- 8:24Speaker 3: see Florida State. And here's what's amazing. Florida State-Louisville, what
- 8:27Speaker 3: should be the better program?
- 8:29Speaker 2: Oh, it should be Florida State.
- 8:30Speaker 3: But you just look at the quarterback situations for right now.
- 8:33Speaker 3: If you go to Jeff Brom, he goes from Jack
- 8:36Speaker 3: Plummer to Miller Moss to.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Keenholz? No, excuse me.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Jack Plummer, Tyler Shuck, Miller Moss, Keenholz. He gets better
- 8:47Speaker 3: as he goes. Jordan Travis, DJ, Thomas Castellanos, and Ashton Davis.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I don't understand what's going on. And you're coaching for
- 8:58Speaker 2: your job.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah, perhaps Norvell just can't evaluate quarterbacks. I mean, that's
- 9:02Speaker 1: a possibility. Maybe he just doesn't know what a good
- 9:03Speaker 1: quarterback is. And you would think if you coached long enough,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you would know that, or you have people around you
- 9:08Speaker 1: that know that. I don't think anybody believes you can
- 9:11Speaker 1: win any more the way college football or the NFL
- 9:14Speaker 1: is played with C-plus quarterbacks.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't. You certainly can't.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And look, Kevin Jennings is A-plus on some plays. Now,
- 9:22Speaker 1: he's got to be maddening as your quarterback because those
- 9:24Speaker 1: interceptions he threw were just inexcusable. I mean, you cannot
- 9:27Speaker 1: throw interceptions in the red zone like that. But, boy,
- 9:30Speaker 1: when he's on his game, I mean, that guy's an A-plus.
- 9:33Speaker 1: When he's not throwing interceptions at bad times, he.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Does a lot of good stuff. What was their– Total
- 9:40Speaker 2: passing yards. Hang on, I'll pull it up. It was 400. Yeah, 430.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It was a career high for him. They had 528
- 9:47Speaker 2: yards of offense.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Florida State and their secondary
- 9:50Speaker 3: is awful. But, you know, just when you thought Florida
- 9:52Speaker 3: State had them in a bad situation, a third long,
- 9:54Speaker 3: you know, Jennings would extend the play a little bit,
- 9:58Speaker 3: and then he would find somebody running around. So, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 3: Jennings can play really good backyard football too, but the
- 10:03Speaker 3: guy's got so much freaking experience.
- 10:05Speaker 2: He does. He does.
- 10:07Speaker 1: More experience than to throw those interceptions.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And listen, other than the actual game itself, when you
- 10:17Speaker 1: have been outspoken– about i mean everybody has labeled florida
- 10:22Speaker 1: state unfortunately and i don't believe it's totally true but
- 10:24Speaker 1: as a program it.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Doesn't have um.
- 10:28Speaker 1: They're broke they don't have enough money yeah that's what
- 10:30Speaker 1: people say that's it's unfortunate but that's that's sort of
- 10:33Speaker 1: the reputation right now in this era of money that
- 10:37Speaker 1: florida state doesn't have it they need more of it
- 10:40Speaker 1: or whatever to have a light issue that is not
- 10:43Speaker 1: of their doing i mean it's a new stadium and
- 10:45Speaker 1: everything but something happened outside the stadium.
- 10:48Speaker 2: It's Butch League, though. It would never happen in an
- 10:49Speaker 2: SEC stadium. Well, you don't know that because was it
- 10:52Speaker 2: true or may have been AI? How do you not
- 10:54Speaker 2: have a generator? Was there a car accident that knocked
- 10:56Speaker 2: out something?
- 10:57Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Is it a transformer issue? Crap if I know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But don't you have generators?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Well, you'd have to have a lot of them. I
- 11:02Speaker 1: don't know how many generators you would need to.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Power a whole stadium. You play eight games a year
- 11:06Speaker 2: in a billion dollar industry. It's not a hospital.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It's not like, but we need generators just in case
- 11:12Speaker 3: there's a situation like that.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I was thinking, LT, because Tallahassee is the state capital
- 11:17Speaker 1: of Florida, correct?
- 11:17Speaker 2: That is correct, yes. I mean, there's the state The
- 11:20Speaker 2: National Guard is somewhere close by. Can't we row? The
- 11:23Speaker 2: only game going. Nobody's working. We got 90 minutes. It's
- 11:26Speaker 2: a holiday. I mean, really.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And that damn thing, by the way, going off at 8.15.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know about you guys. My eyes
- 11:31Speaker 3: were so heavy.
- 11:32Speaker 1: A fight of my life to see the end of that.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I may have lost a couple of drives in the
- 11:36Speaker 1: third quarter.
- 11:37Speaker 2: But I won't back up. Oh, and it's thrown my
- 11:38Speaker 2: complete day off. That was when Dave Pasch would get excited.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I'd be like, oh, what did I miss?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Another turn. But I kept thinking during that whole thing.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I was like, surely.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Other Taylor, I can't remember her name right now.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Davis? Taylor Davis, is that it? Taylor McGregor. Taylor McGregor,
- 11:54Speaker 2: Taylor McGregor. Did a fantastic job.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I thought she was going to hop on right now
- 11:57Speaker 1: and like, hey, Big 12 Commissioner Jim Phillips has just
- 12:01Speaker 1: told me that Ron DeSantis... down the street has sent
- 12:06Speaker 1: over the Florida National Guard.
- 12:08Speaker 2: If it was LSU, it would have happened. Generators. Oh,
- 12:11Speaker 2: the governor would have. I believe if it was Tuscaloosa
- 12:14Speaker 2: or Auburn, we would have had generators there. It would
- 12:15Speaker 2: have never gone down.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I feel really good, and I could be completely wrong
- 12:19Speaker 3: on this, that they are well-equipped with generators.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And if something like this happens, boom, it's right back on.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Well, I think in hindsight right now, and this is
- 12:26Speaker 1: pure hindsight, I think every big school in America is
- 12:29Speaker 1: probably asking the question of, Today, if the same thing
- 12:32Speaker 1: happens to us, do we have a plan that all
- 12:34Speaker 1: the necessities, we get stadium lights on, headsets work, iPads
- 12:38Speaker 1: on the sideline work. We've got to have a plan
- 12:41Speaker 1: so we can pull the game off now. Keep in mind,
- 12:44Speaker 1: it's a gathering of 60,000 plus people, depending on where
- 12:47Speaker 1: you are when you're hosting these games. There's some safety
- 12:51Speaker 1: issues involved, too. I mean, I know they had their
- 12:55Speaker 1: three emergency lights on. It was amazing to me.
- 12:57Speaker 2: That was still no good. It was amazing to me.
- 12:59Speaker 1: ESPN never lost their power, though, Lance.
- 13:01Speaker 2: They did have a generator. They had lights. I don't
- 13:04Speaker 2: know which Taylor it was that reported. It might have
- 13:05Speaker 2: been Tannenbaum. It might have been McGregor. But early on,
- 13:09Speaker 2: they talked about possibly playing it on Tuesday. Yeah, boy.
- 13:12Speaker 3: And that's when I put it on a side TV
- 13:13Speaker 3: and I threw a movie on. And I was like,
- 13:15Speaker 3: what time are they going to possibly play this on Tuesday?
- 13:18Speaker 2: And then you saw the countdown. I don't know what
- 13:20Speaker 2: they would have done because both teams play Saturday, right? No,
- 13:22Speaker 2: Florida State's off this week. And SMU plays UC Davis. Davis, yeah. Yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 2: I'm like you. If I was Rhett Lashley, I love
- 13:30Speaker 2: the circumstances for Florida State.
- 13:32Speaker 3: You kind of get every– you get advantages with weird
- 13:36Speaker 3: stuff for the underdog.
- 13:37Speaker 2: That's right.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Didn't happen, though. They survived it. I did love Jimbo Fisher. Listen,
- 13:42Speaker 1: Florida State actually– we play tomorrow. Florida State actually has
- 13:44Speaker 1: a bye week. Well, SMU plays UC Davis Saturday, though.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to offend anybody.
- 13:49Speaker 1: At UC Davis. I don't want to offend anybody at
- 13:53Speaker 1: UC Davis, but. I think they can play on Tuesday
- 13:56Speaker 1: and still be okay on Saturday.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I still can't believe Jimbo Fisher's on the desk.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It was the first time my wife had seen him. And,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know, she's just, you know, she was going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: watch the start of the game and we get sucked
- 14:06Speaker 1: into this. I don't know why the power outage was fascinating,
- 14:08Speaker 1: but it was. And he started talking. She goes, who
- 14:12Speaker 1: is that? I go, that's Jim O.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Fisher. She was like, how's he on TV? I can't
- 14:18Speaker 2: understand a word he's saying. I mean, it is gibberish.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It was funny because this is the first, I guess,
- 14:23Speaker 3: Florida State game that Maddie has watched in its entirety.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And she's like, do they have another cheer? Like, does
- 14:28Speaker 3: the band play that the entire time? And I'm like,
- 14:31Speaker 3: it really is torture. You understand when they're really good
- 14:34Speaker 3: doing it.
- 14:35Speaker 6: That's right.
- 14:36Speaker 3: But when you're really bad in averaging, you do it nonstop.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I'm like, holy hell. And it would be exhausting being
- 14:41Speaker 3: a fan of Florida State having to do that for nothing.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But just think, you're a freshman, sophomore, junior now at
- 14:47Speaker 1: Florida State. So you were not there for the 13-0 year.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So you're sitting there. You watched as that game went on.
- 14:53Speaker 1: They showed the student section. And only about 25% participation
- 14:58Speaker 1: in the student section.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean, you had a lot of people. Some were like, hey,
- 15:01Speaker 2: wear your ass. You get a tennis elbow for that
- 15:04Speaker 2: damn thing. Some were not doing anything. Well, you got
- 15:06Speaker 2: to mix it up. When SMU has the ball, you
- 15:08Speaker 2: want to go left. Yeah, right. Two-handed. All right. Real quick,
- 15:12Speaker 2: can I ask a question? If you were– And by
- 15:15Speaker 2: the way, the crowd was pathetic. Yeah, it was.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's a bit of a testament.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Would you have waited 90 minutes?
- 15:20Speaker 3: If I'm a Florida State fan, yeah. Would you– I mean,
- 15:23Speaker 3: to drive there and then pack it up and leave?
- 15:25Speaker 1: If you are a Clemson fan, do you watch that
- 15:28Speaker 1: game and worry this could be us? That's one thing
- 15:31Speaker 1: I thought of last night. Like, if I'm a Clemson fan,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I watch this, like, are we about to be Florida State? Like,
- 15:34Speaker 1: if we get rid of Dabo or if we keep Dabo?
- 15:37Speaker 3: I would say if you keep Dabo. Yeah, I don't
- 15:39Speaker 3: know if it matters. I don't know where Clemson is
- 15:42Speaker 3: in the pack anymore. And I only use Clemson, but,
- 15:43Speaker 3: I mean, that's the fear of every program, right? Like,
- 15:46Speaker 3: you could always become Florida State. Florida State didn't think
- 15:48Speaker 3: that's where they were headed, but that's where they've ended up.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, but see, nowadays, is it coaching or is it
- 15:54Speaker 1: the ability to tap into money? I mean, it appears
- 15:58Speaker 1: to be both at Florida State.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they've got a problem with both. Yeah,
- 16:02Speaker 2: I think they've got an issue at both spots.
- 16:04Speaker 3: It's knee-jerk, and we are so overreacting to week one.
- 16:08Speaker 3: But just watching, there are only three teams that can
- 16:11Speaker 3: win the ACC.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Let me guess. Miami? Yes.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Louisville.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Yes. And then you're going to throw Virginia. You wouldn't
- 16:19Speaker 2: put SMU in there? I would not. I'm not going
- 16:21Speaker 2: to sell SMU yet. I think we forget. Virginia goes to.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Dallas, which is going to be a really interesting game. But, Brown,
- 16:27Speaker 3: I just think Virginia is going to be able to
- 16:28Speaker 3: run it on most teams. You saw SMU, the inability
- 16:31Speaker 3: to stop the run last night. I don't think they
- 16:33Speaker 3: can run it consistently. If they can't run it consistently–
- 16:36Speaker 3: Then you put all the pressure on Kevin Jennings. A
- 16:38Speaker 3: ton of experience, but you saw some of the bad decisions.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I'm not going to eliminate.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm not eliminating SMU yet. I'm not eliminating Virginia. And
- 16:46Speaker 1: I'm not going to eliminate Pitt yet.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think I had Pitt in my top 25.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Pitt's good.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Here's all I would say about SMU is I think
- 16:55Speaker 1: we forget that that was their first game. Because it's
- 16:58Speaker 1: so late in week one, those were a lot of
- 17:01Speaker 1: first game mistakes. Those were mistakes that you make when
- 17:03Speaker 1: you're out of your routine, maybe when you don't have
- 17:06Speaker 1: all the resources you normally have on the sidelines, I'm
- 17:08Speaker 1: willing to forgive some of their mistakes. I would like
- 17:10Speaker 1: to see SMU, not against UC Davis, but against whoever
- 17:13Speaker 1: they play after that. Before I say, I don't think
- 17:15Speaker 1: they can win the ACC.
- 17:16Speaker 2: But hats off to Rhett Lashley.
- 17:18Speaker 1: That's at Louisville, by the way, in two weeks. That's
- 17:21Speaker 1: a good we'll know, right? Great game coming up. Hats
- 17:23Speaker 1: off to Rhett Lashley and the SMU folks. Servants heart there.
- 17:26Speaker 1: They rolled out there and they were like, oh yeah, sure.
- 17:30Speaker 1: We'll play this with no headsets. We haven't practiced that
- 17:32Speaker 1: way in two years, but we'll go no headsets and
- 17:35Speaker 1: A few lights, that's okay.
- 17:37Speaker 2: We'll play the game.
- 17:38Speaker 1: One time Jennings was running to the sidelines every play,
- 17:40Speaker 1: like high school.
- 17:41Speaker 2: That's right.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Every play, running to the sideline to get the play
- 17:43Speaker 1: call from Lashley.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I love it. I know.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It's kind of a throwback. I'm not that kind of
- 17:49Speaker 1: a heart. I'd have been making a scene. I'd be like, no,
- 17:51Speaker 1: we're not doing it. No, are you kidding me? And
- 17:54Speaker 1: you're going to still pay us for coming.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I got a.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Couple of texts like, should they be playing this game?
- 17:58Speaker 3: And I was like, well, it's, you know, everything's equal.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I mean, like everybody's playing with hands tied behind their back, so.
- 18:05Speaker 1: It may be a testament of what Lashley thought of
- 18:07Speaker 1: Florida State, by the way. 27-24, SMU wins it. When
- 18:10Speaker 1: we come back, we talk to Jeff Collins, college head coach,
- 18:15Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, and now in the media with us with
- 18:19Speaker 1: his work on social media, some great football content. We'll
- 18:23Speaker 1: talk to him about his thoughts on Alabama's defense, that
- 18:26Speaker 1: big Texas-Ohio State game going on, just how good is
- 18:31Speaker 1: Florida and their rebuild, all that coming up on the
- 18:33Speaker 1: show that's being brought to you. by our friends at

- 19:40Speaker 2: Jeff Collins next.
- 19:43Speaker 1: We've been together a long time now.
- 19:46Speaker 2: How about this? We are closer to 24. 2041 than
- 19:51Speaker 2: we are to the start of our show, the day
- 19:53Speaker 2: we started our show. That's pretty wild. How about that?
- 19:55Speaker 1: We're closer to 2041 than we started the next round
- 19:59Speaker 1: back in 2010. Was that a shower thought?
- 20:02Speaker 6: Nope.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I was throwing this out to set up because I
- 20:04Speaker 1: try to remember what we are pro and con on
- 20:06Speaker 1: the show.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think we are pro-prenups. Is that right on the show?
- 20:10Speaker 2: I wouldn't say I'm pro-prenup, no. You're not? Are you?
- 20:14Speaker 3: I mean, look, every circumstance is different, but I think
- 20:18Speaker 3: that they're very important in certain situations, yes.
- 20:21Speaker 5: $ 6.
- 20:21Speaker 1: 1 billion net worth is what Chip Wilson, the guy
- 20:26Speaker 1: who is the founder and CEO of Lululemon, according to
- 20:31Speaker 1: online reports, he and his wife Summer— do not have
- 20:35Speaker 1: a prenup, and they are getting a divorce, according to reports.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Summer's going to get what?
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's filed in British Columbia in Canada. I don't know
- 20:44Speaker 1: their rules, but the belief is she's going to get
- 20:46Speaker 1: a lot. But before you panic, she did work at
- 20:50Speaker 1: the company early on, was a designer, and helped promote
- 20:54Speaker 1: the company early on. So she probably deserves it.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I'm sure they wouldn't have survived without her. That's right.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Hey, Sabrina, I've just got to ask you then, if
- 21:00Speaker 3: you had a kid— And they had a ton of money,
- 21:03Speaker 3: and they were marrying somebody that didn't have a lot
- 21:06Speaker 3: of means. You wouldn't advise them to get a prenup signed?
- 21:10Speaker 1: I've never really considered it. I mean, offhand, I would
- 21:13Speaker 1: say no, I would not advise that. I would advise
- 21:17Speaker 1: them to make the marriage work.
- 21:18Speaker 2: That's right. Love.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Brown's in favor of love. Brown's in favor of love.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Let's don't even bring the marriage failure into the equation.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Perfect 10 mortgage, Brown.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That's bad, bad financial advice. You do it the way
- 21:29Speaker 2: you want to do it. I'll do it the way
- 21:31Speaker 2: I want to do it. By the way, we should
- 21:34Speaker 2: do the disclaimer here.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Financial advice offered on this show, not by professionals for
- 21:39Speaker 1: entertainment purposes.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Especially you two. I would say yours is bad marriage advice.
- 21:44Speaker 2: So you can either go bad marriage advice or bad
- 21:47Speaker 2: financial advice. It's 50-50.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I mean, the known is if you don't sign one,
- 21:51Speaker 3: she's getting 50.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And the unknown is that it's 50-50. I mean, that's
- 21:56Speaker 2: the way marriages are.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The name says it. Apply in 10 minutes. Close in

- 23:01Speaker 1: Collins joins us now. Friend of the show. Look at
- 23:03Speaker 1: the hat he's wearing. It's a good looking hat. The
- 23:06Speaker 1: next round had from Jeff Collins, former head coach, Georgia Tech,
- 23:10Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. Oh, you're going to take it off. Defensive coordinator.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Oh, you're showing off the hair. I don't like that, man.
- 23:15Speaker 2: I like that. I'll take mine off too. Look at
- 23:18Speaker 2: this head. Defensive coordinator throughout the SEC. What is up, coach?
- 23:21Speaker 2: How are you?
- 23:22Speaker 6: Hey, doing great, man. Hey, my hair, since I stopped
- 23:24Speaker 6: being a head coach and an SEC coordinator, it grew back, bro.
- 23:31Speaker 2: That's good. That's good.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Hey, would you have played that game last night if
- 23:35Speaker 1: you were Rhett Lashley and you were coaching and they
- 23:38Speaker 1: told you no headsets, no communications?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Would you have played it?
- 23:42Speaker 6: Yeah, put the ball down, man. We traveled all that
- 23:44Speaker 6: way from Dallas, Texas. Put the ball down and let's play.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Go old school.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:49Speaker 1: What– I mean– From a coaching standpoint, I'm sure you
- 23:53Speaker 1: watched it as a former coach and you're like, it's
- 23:56Speaker 1: complete anxiety for you because you guys like to be
- 24:00Speaker 1: prepared for absolutely everything. And that was really something you
- 24:03Speaker 1: could never prepare for. Dunaway has talked about, I respect
- 24:07Speaker 1: the way Rhett Lashley specifically, he said it before the game.
- 24:11Speaker 2: He said, we knew we.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Had an hour and a half battery on our headsets
- 24:14Speaker 1: and we were going to lose them. But, you know,
- 24:16Speaker 1: you just figure it out. I mean, you guys prepare
- 24:18Speaker 1: for everything. What is it like as a head coach
- 24:20Speaker 1: when you get a curveball you could have never prepared for?
- 24:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Well, I think having Kevin Jennings helps, too.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree.
- 24:26Speaker 6: You've got that dude that can operate. But I think
- 24:29Speaker 6: some of the things, and this is going to be
- 24:31Speaker 6: a hot take that I don't know that, you know,
- 24:33Speaker 6: I'm ready to talk too much about. But this whole
- 24:36Speaker 6: iPad on the sideline and iPad up in the press box,
- 24:41Speaker 6: I don't know that I'm all for it, right? Having communication,
- 24:46Speaker 6: all those things are good. Give me the personnel. Give
- 24:49Speaker 6: me the down distance. I can see the formation. I
- 24:52Speaker 6: can call a game and light you up. I don't
- 24:54Speaker 6: need all of that extra stuff, and I think a
- 24:57Speaker 6: lot of the people, you know, Rhett's an old school
- 25:00Speaker 6: Arkansas dude. He doesn't need all that stuff. Just put
- 25:04Speaker 6: the ball down and play.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So, speaking of your hair, let's just go back to
- 25:09Speaker 3: Ann Arbor on Saturday night. Like, you know, Lance Taylor
- 25:14Speaker 3: in Western Michigan, they handle this thing so well. But boy,
- 25:18Speaker 3: I just and you do have there is a contingency
- 25:21Speaker 3: out there that is like, hey, the Big Ten, they
- 25:24Speaker 3: were transparent. They show there was one second left. The
- 25:27Speaker 3: three of us, we don't believe it. We think they
- 25:29Speaker 3: got jobbed. But as a former coach, just putting yourself
- 25:32Speaker 3: in that situation, you grind all summer, you go in
- 25:36Speaker 3: there as a four-touchdown underdog, and you've got the game won,
- 25:39Speaker 3: and they put another play back on.
- 25:41Speaker 2: How do you handle that?
- 25:43Speaker 6: So I would not have been able to handle it
- 25:45Speaker 6: the way Lance did. Lance is one of my best friends.
- 25:47Speaker 6: We were together in Alabama with Nick Saban in 2007,
- 25:51Speaker 6: and I would not have been able to do what
- 25:54Speaker 6: he did. Now, looking at it from that lens– what
- 25:57Speaker 6: he's got to do with his team, repeat his match champions.
- 26:00Speaker 6: They won it last year. How do I handle this
- 26:03Speaker 6: moment to make sure that that happens again? Lance Taylor
- 26:06Speaker 6: handled it beautifully. Now, I was watching the game. I'm
- 26:11Speaker 6: getting tired. I'm ready to shut it down and go
- 26:12Speaker 6: to bed. I'm semi-retired. I'm old. So I'm watching. They
- 26:16Speaker 6: forced me to stay up because it was a close game.
- 26:19Speaker 6: It was last play. I have my tweet ready. I
- 26:24Speaker 6: have my text to Lance Taylor ready on my phone. Preloaded.
- 26:28Speaker 6: They knocked the pass down. No, no. I post the tweet. Congrats, Lance. Oh,
- 26:34Speaker 6: big win. Then I text Lance.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 26:38Speaker 6: Congrats. So proud of you. You're the fucking, you're the,
- 26:42Speaker 6: excuse me. You're the fucking man.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:45Speaker 6: So I do both of those things. Well, you guys,
- 26:47Speaker 6: you guys know Patrick Suddus, longtime great general manager and,
- 26:52Speaker 6: I texted, I forwarded Pat my tweet, right? Because me, him,
- 26:56Speaker 6: and Lance were the recruiting staff at Alabama in 07.
- 26:59Speaker 6: And then I put my phone down to shut it down.
- 27:02Speaker 6: Patrick Suttis texted me two minutes later, bro, they lost.
- 27:09Speaker 6: And so I'm like, how did they lose? I just
- 27:11Speaker 6: watched them win the football game. How did they lose?
- 27:14Speaker 6: And then I go in all the aftermath and drama,
- 27:17Speaker 6: and then social media explodes, rightfully so. I chime in
- 27:22Speaker 6: because Lance is my boy and right is right and
- 27:25Speaker 6: wrong is wrong. So I chimed in and posted what
- 27:29Speaker 6: my final score was, was 12 to 7. Yeah. And
- 27:33Speaker 6: I posted that and it went, you know, it had
- 27:36Speaker 6: a bunch of whatever's. But I think Lance handled it beautifully.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Wow. Has he responded to the text yet?
- 27:44Speaker 6: He has. And that's between he and I. Okay.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I just wondered.
- 27:50Speaker 6: And then I did a, so I've got a new
- 27:52Speaker 6: show that I've been doing and I appreciate you guys.
- 27:54Speaker 6: You guys have been with me on this journey and
- 27:56Speaker 6: I thank you so much. But I started, they had
- 27:59Speaker 6: me start a show, the Coach Collins show. And so
- 28:03Speaker 6: I went on a rant about Lance Taylor and, That
- 28:07Speaker 6: had some traction too, but he's the best. I still
- 28:13Speaker 6: trust my eyes. I saw zero seconds.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He's at Western Michigan right now, but if you're an
- 28:20Speaker 1: AD in the Big Ten or the SEC, do you
- 28:26Speaker 1: have his phone number in your upper right-hand drawer in
- 28:28Speaker 1: case you have to make a move?
- 28:30Speaker 6: A million percent. This is not why Lance did it,
- 28:34Speaker 6: but I think If you're somebody that is entrusting someone
- 28:39Speaker 6: to run your football program, to be the face of
- 28:42Speaker 6: your university, you want to make sure that that person,
- 28:45Speaker 6: when there is a crisis, when there is something that
- 28:48Speaker 6: just goes off the rails, that they're going to have
- 28:51Speaker 6: a steady hand, they're going to have character, they're going
- 28:54Speaker 6: to have composure. That five-minute press conference after the game
- 28:59Speaker 6: tells you everything you need to know about Lance Taylor.
- 29:02Speaker 6: You can watch his team play. Smart football, sound football, physical, competitive,
- 29:09Speaker 6: all of those things are great. But you can't tell
- 29:12Speaker 6: the composure and character of a man until they're thrust
- 29:15Speaker 6: into something that Lance got thrust into. And I think
- 29:19Speaker 6: he handled it amazingly. So there's going to be a
- 29:22Speaker 6: ton of ADs that, you know, come calling.
- 29:26Speaker 1: As you watch that game, Michigan, they are quite limited
- 29:30Speaker 1: on offense, Coach. And I know You probably haven't spent
- 29:33Speaker 1: a ton of time breaking down their tape, but just
- 29:36Speaker 1: your eyes watching that game, does that look like an
- 29:39Speaker 1: offense that can get turned around.
- 29:41Speaker 6: So part of me is watching it and i'm fired
- 29:44Speaker 6: up for lance yeah right because they had a great
- 29:46Speaker 6: defense last year they bring in a new dc what's
- 29:48Speaker 6: it going to look like they didn't miss a beat
- 29:51Speaker 6: and so part of me and my my lens of
- 29:54Speaker 6: it i'm happy for lance they play great defense But
- 29:57Speaker 6: if you flip it on the other side, should a
- 30:00Speaker 6: Big Ten, should what be a top 15 team, supposedly
- 30:04Speaker 6: they were, struggle against a MAAC opponent, even though they
- 30:09Speaker 6: were the MAAC champs? They probably shouldn't, but they did.
- 30:12Speaker 6: So it was a little bit of Western Michigan, yes.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Was it a lot of, you know, Michigan? Probably the
- 30:19Speaker 6: same is true.
- 30:20Speaker 3: You know, we always overreact to week one. It's hard
- 30:23Speaker 3: not to overreact to what LSU did to Clemson.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I mean, that was complete annihilation. And it's hard to look.
- 30:32Speaker 3: These aren't like opponents when Georgia plays Tennessee State and
- 30:35Speaker 3: LSU plays Clemson. I would still say Georgia is the
- 30:39Speaker 3: better team than LSU right now.
- 30:41Speaker 2: I know it's one weekend. Again, completely different opponents. Am
- 30:45Speaker 2: I way off on that?
- 30:46Speaker 6: No, I think LSU is legit. I mean, they're going
- 30:51Speaker 6: to be a problem. And then in Baton Rouge, we
- 30:54Speaker 6: all have been there, LSU at night. We've all coached there,
- 30:57Speaker 6: been to games. It's a wild scene. Well, what Lane
- 31:01Speaker 6: Kiffin has done is he's pouring gasoline on that entire fire.
- 31:05Speaker 6: And that thing, with all the celebrities, all the things
- 31:09Speaker 6: that were surrounding the narrative surrounding the game and the hype,
- 31:14Speaker 6: his players just went out there and put the ball
- 31:17Speaker 6: down and played great football. And Blake Baker coached a
- 31:21Speaker 6: heck of a game. Charlie Weiss Jr. coached a heck
- 31:23Speaker 6: of a game. But I think the incredible talent that
- 31:27Speaker 6: LSU has, but then you factor in the mojo piece,
- 31:30Speaker 6: that's real. And they've got the mojo piece right now
- 31:35Speaker 6: as well, leading into what, they go to Oxford in
- 31:38Speaker 6: two weeks, two weekends?
- 31:39Speaker 5: Yep.
- 31:40Speaker 6: That's going to be... If they pay-per-viewed that, they'd break
- 31:44Speaker 6: the bank. Yes, yes.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You need cameras outside on the night before the game
- 31:50Speaker 1: and after the game, too, on that pay-per-view. That's the
- 31:52Speaker 1: camera shots I want to see what goes on outside.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Jeff Collins is with us. Coach, I want to ask
- 31:57Speaker 1: you about Georgia because they opened with one of those
- 32:00Speaker 1: games at 66-3, so nobody's talking about them. But when
- 32:04Speaker 1: you look at this Georgia team, This seems to be
- 32:07Speaker 1: built like one of Kirby's championship-like team to my eyes,
- 32:11Speaker 1: from a coach's eye. When you look at Georgia, what
- 32:14Speaker 1: do they look like?
- 32:17Speaker 6: I did a road trip during preseason camp. I went
- 32:19Speaker 6: to about 30 camps in three weeks. I was on
- 32:22Speaker 6: social media about it and all that other stuff. I
- 32:24Speaker 6: went to Athens, Georgia. I walk into the Buttsmere building
- 32:28Speaker 6: where the football offices are. Kirby grabs me. He goes, Jeff,
- 32:32Speaker 6: I'm glad you're here, but I don't need this shit
- 32:35Speaker 6: on social media that you're here today. I said, Kirby,
- 32:39Speaker 6: I said, I'm good, bro. We're good. I just want
- 32:41Speaker 6: to watch some ball, talk some ball. So I go
- 32:44Speaker 6: out to practice and I mean, I didn't see a
- 32:46Speaker 6: weakness at any position by the players. Like they're, they're
- 32:52Speaker 6: strong and they're deep at every single position. But then
- 32:55Speaker 6: the practice was just an old school Nick Saban, Kirby smart,
- 33:01Speaker 6: all ball, There was violence. There was competitiveness. There was toughness.
- 33:07Speaker 6: And I saw 30 practices. That was the most physically
- 33:11Speaker 6: demanding practice that I'd been to. I mean, the pads
- 33:14Speaker 6: were popping. And I just think the talent that they have,
- 33:19Speaker 6: the mentality that Kirby always builds, and I think Bobo,
- 33:24Speaker 6: I think he's gotten whatever reputation from the fan base
- 33:28Speaker 6: or whatever, a certain type of way. Mike Bobo can
- 33:32Speaker 6: call some college football plays, and the moment's never too
- 33:35Speaker 6: big for him. And then we've seen the development of
- 33:37Speaker 6: Glenn Schumann, obviously with the help of Will, but Glenn
- 33:41Speaker 6: Schumann's turned into one of the top five play callers
- 33:44Speaker 6: in the game too. So it's fun to watch.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Coach Jeff Collins is with us. That's where you find
- 33:50Speaker 1: his YouTube channel where he's doing some of these interviews
- 33:52Speaker 1: and breaking down what he sees. His YouTube channel is
- 33:55Speaker 1: Coach Jeff Collins, and you can follow him on social
- 33:57Speaker 1: media at Coach Collins. So very easy to find him there,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and we recommend that you do so. From what you've
- 34:03Speaker 1: watched with Alabama, I don't know how much of the
- 34:05Speaker 1: film you got to break down on Alabama, but specifically
- 34:09Speaker 1: the side of the ball you coached as an assistant defense.
- 34:11Speaker 1: That was a dominant defensive performance by Alabama. What stood
- 34:15Speaker 1: out to you about their performance?
- 34:16Speaker 6: Yeah, so, you know, Kevon Coleman, who coaches the nickels
- 34:20Speaker 6: and the safeties, Jason Jones, one of my dear friends,
- 34:23Speaker 6: we were together at UNC, and Kane Womack. I think
- 34:26Speaker 6: I saw a lot of wrinkles that they haven't had
- 34:30Speaker 6: maybe in the past. There was a lot more match
- 34:33Speaker 6: coverage that Kane used in the East Carolina game. And
- 34:37Speaker 6: I'm sure in that game, you know, early on, Kane
- 34:40Speaker 6: was ready to show everything. But as that game went on,
- 34:44Speaker 6: Kane didn't have to empty the clip and just show
- 34:47Speaker 6: all of the new wrinkles that he's come up with
- 34:50Speaker 6: over the offseason. But I saw a lot more match coverage.
- 34:54Speaker 6: He's uber creative. There's multiple fronts. They go from even.
- 34:57Speaker 6: They go for odd. There's pressures coming from everywhere with
- 35:01Speaker 6: cover three behind it, with man behind it, with traps
- 35:04Speaker 6: and tampas. I don't know how nerdy you want me
- 35:07Speaker 6: to be about that stuff, but... The match coverage stuff
- 35:13Speaker 6: I saw, and I don't know if that's from his
- 35:15Speaker 6: meetings with Coach Saban or an influence or just being
- 35:18Speaker 6: more comfortable with who they have on the roster now.
- 35:21Speaker 6: The DBs. So I go to practice in Tuscaloosa and
- 35:25Speaker 6: went to Dreamland Barbecue and Taco Casa. I had all
- 35:28Speaker 6: the spots. I went to Ramma Jamma's for breakfast. Anyway.
- 35:33Speaker 6: So I go out to practice, and I'd been in
- 35:36Speaker 6: the meeting room with the DBs. They were impressive. But
- 35:39Speaker 6: when they got on the grass and those Alabama DBs, Coach,
- 35:44Speaker 6: I think they go 6'4 1⁄2, 6'5, across the board.
- 35:48Speaker 6: And I went to every place in the country. I
- 35:50Speaker 6: didn't go to Notre Dame, but I think Alabama and
- 35:53Speaker 6: Notre Dame had the best DBs in college football. And
- 35:57Speaker 6: I know personally how well they're coached, so it's just
- 36:00Speaker 6: going to be exciting to see them sprinkling in a
- 36:04Speaker 6: lot more match coverage, a lot more man, along with
- 36:08Speaker 6: all the cool creative stuff that Kane's always known for.
- 36:11Speaker 6: It's going to be fun to watch.
- 36:13Speaker 3: I think everybody is a fan of John Sumrall. And
- 36:15Speaker 3: the offense, 66 points.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Coach! You know, it was.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Basically over, Jeff, before it started, 17-0. But Florida Atlantic,
- 36:24Speaker 3: I think, is improved this year.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:27Speaker 3: But is there a concern, 11-22 on third down, almost
- 36:31Speaker 3: 400 total yards for the Owls?
- 36:33Speaker 2: I mean, what did you see overall, 60.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Minutes, just one snapshot of the first week for the
- 36:38Speaker 3: Florida Gators under John Sumrall?
- 36:40Speaker 6: Let me first say this. John Sumrall is a ball coach.
- 36:46Speaker 6: I went to Florida Gators practice. Bro, I was impressed.
- 36:54Speaker 6: I don't get impressed too much too often. I was
- 36:56Speaker 6: impressed with that dude and how he ran a college
- 36:59Speaker 6: football practice. And they don't let a lot of people in.
- 37:02Speaker 6: Everybody asked to come in. They're like, no, camp's closed.
- 37:05Speaker 6: You can't come. Camp's closed. You can't come. I was
- 37:08Speaker 6: cool with it. And then I reached out to Scott Strickland,
- 37:11Speaker 6: the AD, and I'm like, bro, I'm going to come through.
- 37:13Speaker 6: I'm going to give you a hug. And he was like,
- 37:15Speaker 6: let's go out to practice. So we called Summerall, and
- 37:17Speaker 6: he's like, can Jeff come to practice? And John was like,
- 37:19Speaker 6: hell yeah. Gave me a huge bag of swag. But
- 37:23Speaker 6: the way he runs a practice was awesome. Discipline, detailed.
- 37:29Speaker 6: There wasn't a lot of wasted time. It was physical,
- 37:31Speaker 6: all those things. But at the end.
- 37:35Speaker 6: When you bring the team up, normally there's a rah-rah
- 37:39Speaker 6: speech or there's going to be something sexy for social
- 37:41Speaker 6: media during preseason camp. Coach, John Summerall, at the end
- 37:46Speaker 6: of it, ripped them for about three minutes and then
- 37:50Speaker 6: just walked off the field. This is the greatest thing
- 37:54Speaker 6: I've ever seen, right? Well, then you watch the game
- 37:56Speaker 6: and his presser, he didn't candy coat anything. You know,
- 38:01Speaker 6: he called out the defense, things they got to get
- 38:04Speaker 6: better at. He called out entitlement, right? Some guys think
- 38:07Speaker 6: that they're better than they are. He just kept it
- 38:09Speaker 6: 100 with them and was real. Here is my assessment.
- 38:13Speaker 6: I'm not going to candy coat it for social media.
- 38:15Speaker 6: I'm not going to try to put some cool spin
- 38:18Speaker 6: narrative out I'm just going to tell it like it is.
- 38:22Speaker 6: And I thought it was a breath of fresh air
- 38:25Speaker 6: just listening to him talk about his team, being honest,
- 38:29Speaker 6: being direct, not being mean-spirited. Like even when he was
- 38:32Speaker 6: getting after the team, you know, post-practice, it wasn't mean-spirited.
- 38:37Speaker 6: It was just like, hey, there's a standard around here
- 38:40Speaker 6: that we've got to live up to. And it was
- 38:43Speaker 6: impressive to see and, you know, watch him perform. And
- 38:47Speaker 6: I'll tell you, Buster Faulkner– that offensive coordinator, that dude
- 38:51Speaker 6: can coach football. I've studied a bunch of his stuff
- 38:54Speaker 6: the last couple of weeks, and he is a complete pain.
- 38:58Speaker 6: The things that he does, that was my Rockdale County education.
- 39:04Speaker 6: The things that he does have not been done in
- 39:08Speaker 6: that league. The SEC's got tremendous coaches and all these
- 39:13Speaker 6: great X's and O's, great players. But the difference in
- 39:16Speaker 6: what Buster Faulkner does relative to everybody else in the league,
- 39:21Speaker 6: it's going to be a learning curve for some of
- 39:23Speaker 6: these great defensive coaches to deal with.
- 39:26Speaker 1: For those that don't know, Jeff, as he's mentioned early
- 39:28Speaker 1: in the interview, was part of the staff that brought
- 39:32Speaker 1: in Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, that started the dynasty in Tuscaloosa.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Sark said yesterday, Jeremiah Smith reminds him of Julio Jones
- 39:43Speaker 1: as Texas and Ohio State gets ready to play. When
- 39:46Speaker 1: you look at Jeremiah Smith knowing Julio Jones and Is
- 39:49Speaker 1: that a fair comp or is that an insult to Julio?
- 39:52Speaker 6: No, I think it's an amazing comp. And I think
- 39:55Speaker 6: Ryan Day is lucky there's not a one-and-done rule in
- 39:58Speaker 6: college football.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Right? Because that dude can go play on Sundays today.
- 40:04Speaker 6: You watch his plays that he made the other day
- 40:05Speaker 6: and all throughout the last season. But the thing that
- 40:08Speaker 6: stands out to me about that kid is it appears–
- 40:13Speaker 6: Just the work ethic, the hunger, the humbleness, those are
- 40:17Speaker 6: qualities that Julio had too. Julio came to Alabama, A,
- 40:22Speaker 6: because it's a great place, B, because Nick Saban's a
- 40:25Speaker 6: great coach, but C, because of Kurt Cignetti. Kurt Cignetti's
- 40:29Speaker 6: not a sexy, flashy, dynamic recruiter. Kurt Cignetti is all
- 40:34Speaker 6: about development, fundamentals, technique, learning the playbook, long-term plan for
- 40:39Speaker 6: your life. That's what Julio chose. It feels like that
- 40:43Speaker 6: kid that plays for the, what are they, Crimson and Gray?
- 40:46Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:47Speaker 6: Is built that same way from a mentality standpoint. Physically,
- 40:50Speaker 6: he's a freak, right? Talented. But the way he's built
- 40:53Speaker 6: and the way he plays, that's the part that reminds
- 40:57Speaker 6: me of Julio the most.
- 40:59Speaker 3: So you did tell us that LSU is going to
- 41:01Speaker 3: be a problem. I think we all agree with that.
- 41:03Speaker 3: On the other side, though, Clemson, zero sacks, two tackles
- 41:06Speaker 3: for losses, one of 13 on third downs, eight first downs,
- 41:10Speaker 3: 145 total yards.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Complete embarrassment. Where are we right now on Clemson football?
- 41:15Speaker 6: Yeah, and here's the thing. I've got to get a
- 41:20Speaker 6: feel for this because I'm a coach, and I love
- 41:23Speaker 6: those guys on the Clemson football staff, Dabo. I'm close
- 41:26Speaker 6: friends with almost everybody on the staff. So I've got
- 41:29Speaker 6: to figure out a way to be critical of my boys,
- 41:33Speaker 6: but never be demeaning. But I want to give credit
- 41:36Speaker 6: to Blake Baker at LSU. They did a tremendous job, right?
- 41:39Speaker 6: But I do think there's some things that they're going
- 41:43Speaker 6: to look at right now and just be like, how
- 41:45Speaker 6: can we assemble this, reevaluate what we're doing right now
- 41:51Speaker 6: in a short time frame and to play some better
- 41:54Speaker 6: football going down the stretch.
- 41:57Speaker 2: That was very diplomatic. That was good. That was really good.
- 42:01Speaker 6: I'll get used to it, but I have a hard
- 42:03Speaker 6: time being negative about my boys.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I got you.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I don't want you to get too used to it.
- 42:07Speaker 1: I want you to get back into coaching. I liked
- 42:10Speaker 1: your ass when you were bald.
- 42:11Speaker 6: I appreciate that.
- 42:13Speaker 1: All right, at Coach Collins on social media. On YouTube,
- 42:17Speaker 1: his channel is at Coach Jeff Collins. At Coach Jeff Collins.
- 42:20Speaker 6: Yeah, spell it right. It's spelled right. G-E-O-F-F. George Washington
- 42:25Speaker 6: said we're going to have two ways to spell this, right?
- 42:28Speaker 6: J-E-F-F and G-E-O-F-F. So we're going to make sure we
- 42:31Speaker 6: got that right.
- 42:32Speaker 1: That was my favorite meme after the Western Michigan game.
- 42:35Speaker 1: So we're going to have two clocks. Oh, and they're
- 42:37Speaker 1: both going to be in sync?
- 42:38Speaker 2: No. No, no. G-E-O-F-F.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Coach Jeff Collins is where you find him on YouTube.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Coach, thank you. Always good to talk to you.
- 42:46Speaker 6: Thank you. Always, fellas. Appreciate y'all.
- 42:48Speaker 2: All right, buddy. Take care of that.
- 42:49Speaker 1: It's Coach Jeff Collins with us. Breaking down what he
- 42:52Speaker 1: saw week one. Fascinating look from a coach's.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Point of view there. Yeah, absolutely great stuff.
- 42:56Speaker 1: When we come back, we continue to dive in to
- 42:59Speaker 1: college football as we come off of week one into
- 43:02Speaker 1: week two. AP poll out later today. We'll react to
- 43:06Speaker 1: that when it happens live on our Next Round platform.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Make sure you're following us everywhere at Next Round Live,
- 43:13Speaker 1: at Next Round Live on all of our socials. When
- 43:16Speaker 1: we come back, that Texas-Ohio State game gets a little hotter,
- 43:20Speaker 1: but Sark said something that surprised me yesterday. Speaking of
- 43:23Speaker 1: Western Michigan and Michigan, that's next right here on the
- 43:26Speaker 1: next round presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sporting State.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Hey, pretty cool thing.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Before I tell you about Crockett Coffee and then we
- 43:32Speaker 1: get back into college football. American Airlines has a flight
- 43:36Speaker 1: every day from Dallas to Nashville, direct flight. At least
- 43:42Speaker 1: they got multiple, but one flight every day from Dallas
- 43:45Speaker 1: to Nashville will be called Flight 925.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Oh, for Dolly. For Dolly Parton. That's pretty cool. Working
- 43:51Speaker 2: nine to five. You know the song. I do. I've
- 43:54Speaker 2: heard that song.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Our friends at Crockett Coffee can get you going nine
- 43:58Speaker 1: to five when you have to punch that clock in.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Crockett Coffee started by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's
- 44:06Speaker 1: brother Mason. Named after Davy Crockett, the hunter, the storyteller,
- 44:10Speaker 1: the patriot, backwood legend. You can look at the logo
- 44:13Speaker 1: and you know how exciting and how aggressive this coffee is.
- 44:17Speaker 1: It's 100% Arapica beans, high altitude beans, small batch roasted
- 44:21Speaker 1: right here in America's heartland. And it ships fresh roasted
- 44:26Speaker 1: right from America's heartland, never sitting on a shelf. You
- 44:29Speaker 1: can get it light roasted, medium, dark, decaf, organic, the
- 44:32Speaker 1: mushroom blend, however you want it, whole bean, ground, K-cups.
- 44:35Speaker 2: They've got it.
- 44:36Speaker 1: You can set up a subscription, change it anytime. Free
- 44:39Speaker 1: shipping on orders of $ 59 or more, and there's a
- 44:42Speaker 1: discount for veterans. And here's my favorite part. Crockett has
- 44:46Speaker 1: partnered with Tunnel to Towers, building mortgage-free homes.
- 44:50Speaker 2: This is amazing.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen service members and
- 44:55Speaker 1: those that have been injured, the veterans and first responders
- 44:58Speaker 1: that Tunnel to Towers works with. It's good coffee, made
- 45:02Speaker 1: in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com, that's CrockettCoffee.com, C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com.
- 45:13Speaker 2: All right, off of the Western Michigan-Michigan game.
- 45:16Speaker 1: By the way, as this age is, More and more
- 45:19Speaker 1: people not believing the video from the Big Ten.
- 45:22Speaker 2: I'm surprised the amount that are, though, honestly. Yeah, I am, too.
- 45:24Speaker 3: And I know we'll talk to Klatt on Thursday.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Thursday, yeah. Yeah, Pereira on. It seemed like Andy Staples
- 45:31Speaker 2: kind of sided with. No, Andy did yesterday. I was
- 45:34Speaker 2: a little surprised at that. Heather Dinich has sided with him.
- 45:36Speaker 2: I saw that on ESPN. Pereira, though, says.
- 45:39Speaker 1: The old saying was when we were creating replay, never
- 45:44Speaker 1: change what 10 million people see watching on television.
- 45:47Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:48Speaker 2: If you see it on your television screen, that's your customer. Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 2: And there shouldn't be a clock that isn't seen on television.
- 45:56Speaker 3: That's, I mean, like sometimes in a pile, you can't
- 45:59Speaker 3: see if a knee is hit before a ball comes loose.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I mean, there's certain things like that. We all saw that.
- 46:04Speaker 2: We all saw it.
- 46:05Speaker 3: And then you wait two hours for, To release a
- 46:08Speaker 3: video that is inconclusive itself.
- 46:10Speaker 2: We're taking a look here.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Josh Pate's about as straight by the book guy there is.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Is it Canva? Is that the editing process? He called
- 46:18Speaker 1: it to send out a Canva edited video. And then
- 46:22Speaker 1: there's people blowing up the digitized numbers over here that
- 46:25Speaker 1: wouldn't be used in a clock situation like that, the
- 46:29Speaker 1: font and the numbers.
- 46:30Speaker 2: I could have filmed that at home with my microwave.
- 46:35Speaker 2: And you could have done it quicker, right? Yeah, easily.
- 46:38Speaker 3: But I saw our buddy Clay, and I didn't read
- 46:40Speaker 3: the article, and I meant to click on it, but
- 46:43Speaker 3: it was something to the effect of, did Western Michigan
- 46:46Speaker 3: strike a deal with the Big Ten?
- 46:50Speaker 2: I mean, I have not thought from that angle. And
- 46:53Speaker 2: how would you know that you're going to complete that
- 46:54Speaker 2: final pass? You know what I'm saying? No, I mean. Like,
- 46:58Speaker 2: what would the deal look like?
- 47:00Speaker 1: Well, I think the deal would be, obviously, after the
- 47:01Speaker 1: pass is completed, the Big Ten has to go to
- 47:04Speaker 1: the MAAC or to Western Michigan or both and say, yeah,
- 47:10Speaker 1: we've got no evidence to support this, but we're going
- 47:12Speaker 1: to create some. And here's why you're going to be quiet.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Western Michigan, here's that. Mac, here is that. We
- 47:20Speaker 2: talked about it yesterday.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I brought it up that the Mac plays so many games,
- 47:23Speaker 1: pay games every year. You don't want to destroy that relationship.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Big Ten keeps them afloat. That's right. That's right.
- 47:29Speaker 1: But a lot of people not buying into that. It's
- 47:32Speaker 1: weird to hear a sitting coach who's got the biggest
- 47:39Speaker 1: game of the year out of Conference Texas and Ohio
- 47:41Speaker 1: State this week. But Sark got into that, and he even,
- 47:45Speaker 1: I mean, if you want to see a good matchup
- 47:47Speaker 1: down the road, Texas-Michigan could be fun because Sark even
- 47:51Speaker 1: jumped into the old rushing of the field that surprised him.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Listen to Steve Sarkisian.
- 47:57Speaker 7: Unfortunate for Western Michigan to play their tails off the
- 48:01Speaker 7: way they did and to lose like that. I've lost
- 48:03Speaker 7: a game that way before on a Hail Mary, and
- 48:06Speaker 7: that definitely sucks. Um, but that's why you play 60 minutes. Um,
- 48:10Speaker 7: but again, I don't know the exact ruling on the timing.
- 48:13Speaker 7: I know there was a player out of bounds, touch
- 48:15Speaker 7: the ball first. Is there one second? Is there not
- 48:18Speaker 7: the clock in the stadium, the clock back in the
- 48:20Speaker 7: big 10 set? There was a lot of moving parts
- 48:22Speaker 7: that I'm, I'm not going to pretend to know everything about. Um,
- 48:26Speaker 7: but wow, what a finish, you know? Um, my, my
- 48:29Speaker 7: biggest thing was like, I was shocked. They, they stormed
- 48:32Speaker 7: the field. That was probably a surprise.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:36Speaker 2: That's so deadpan, too. That was well-delivered. Everybody was shocked
- 48:39Speaker 2: by that. That's so well-delivered. I guess the equivalent would
- 48:44Speaker 2: be Texas State.
- 48:47Speaker 3: If that would have happened last week, if it were
- 48:49Speaker 3: played out the exact same way.
- 48:50Speaker 2: If Texas beats Texas State. Do you think Texas fans
- 48:53Speaker 2: rushed the field?
- 48:55Speaker 1: Some of it is the nature of the victory. It's
- 48:57Speaker 1: just such a wild play. But at some point, you've
- 48:59Speaker 1: got to stop and say, yeah, that was a wild
- 49:00Speaker 1: play against Western Michigan. It was not against Even Michigan State.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Yeah, the automatic response. I get that.
- 49:05Speaker 3: But wouldn't it be more of relief? Like, oh, my God,
- 49:08Speaker 3: what did we just go through? Like, how in the
- 49:09Speaker 3: hell did it come down to that? Like, instead of
- 49:12Speaker 3: getting off your ass and running onto the field.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I mean, this is no shot. Forrester, give me Forrester's microphone.
- 49:19Speaker 2: He's our resident audience. Auburn fan. You have to start
- 49:21Speaker 2: it with this is no shot.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Didn't Auburn rush the field after they beat somebody? It
- 49:29Speaker 1: was the last home game or something.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Scott, is he thinking of the Texas A & M game?
- 49:33Speaker 4: I think he might be thinking of Texas A & M.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the one where Cornell coached?
- 49:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess. They did rush the field on that.
- 49:38Speaker 4: I think that was just about the lack of wins recently.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that was interesting.
- 49:43Speaker 4: Just something to celebrate.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a testament to where Auburn football was
- 49:47Speaker 2: at that point, Scott, really. I mean.
- 49:48Speaker 6: Yeah. I just.
- 49:50Speaker 1: The whole rushing of the field or courts, I don't
- 49:52Speaker 1: know when you should or shouldn't do it.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yeah, probably not after you beat West Virginia.
- 49:55Speaker 3: But, I mean, you can kind of... I mean, I
- 49:57Speaker 3: don't know about you guys. I feel like I've got
- 49:58Speaker 3: a feel for it on the couch.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I do. Like, they're going to rush here.
- 50:04Speaker 2: This is probably the one that surprised me the most.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Of all the rushes... Of all time. Of all time.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Of all time. This was the one that surprised me
- 50:11Speaker 2: the most.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Yeah, because now Clemson gets caught in this because they
- 50:13Speaker 1: do the whole meet at the paw thing. So they
- 50:15Speaker 1: rush the field every game.
- 50:15Speaker 2: They don't really rush it. They walk out.
- 50:17Speaker 1: They walk out there, but it ends up with everybody
- 50:19Speaker 1: on the field. And a lot of people are like,
- 50:20Speaker 1: oh my God, they just beat Wake Forest and they're
- 50:22Speaker 1: going to rush the field.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Well, they do it every game.
- 50:24Speaker 1: They walk out and it allows the visiting team, if
- 50:27Speaker 1: you lose the game, to also walk out on your field.
- 50:29Speaker 4: That's right.
- 50:29Speaker 2: And take pictures.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Like LSU last year, a lot of LSU fans taking
- 50:33Speaker 1: pictures midfield against Clemson.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Here's Kyle Whittingham. By the way, isn't there a video
- 50:38Speaker 2: of Kyle Whittingham talking to Lance Taylor? No, there was
- 50:41Speaker 2: no time on the clock. Yeah, there was no time
- 50:43Speaker 2: on the clock. I think he's saying that.
- 50:45Speaker 1: And here's Kyle Whittingham at his news conference yesterday. Has
- 50:49Speaker 1: aged 100 years since losing to Western Michigan.
- 50:52Speaker 2: He does look older.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Gets asked how firmly Bryce Underwood is still Michigan's QB1.
- 50:59Speaker 6: It's early in the season. People are going to get
- 51:01Speaker 6: up in arms.
- 51:02Speaker 2: How firmly does he QB one?
- 51:04Speaker 5: He's our QB right now. And, and, uh, you know, there,
- 51:07Speaker 5: it's not a, it's not something that's infinite. I mean,
- 51:09Speaker 5: at some point, you know, we've got to turn a
- 51:11Speaker 5: corner and, and, uh, we've got to see improvement as
- 51:15Speaker 5: we do with a bunch of stuff. We got to
- 51:17Speaker 5: see improvement out of the coaches. And so, uh, it's
- 51:19Speaker 5: not just on Bryce, but, but, and it's not just
- 51:23Speaker 5: Bryce's job that is not absolutely set in concrete. Nobody says,
- 51:27Speaker 5: I mean, you got to perform week in and week
- 51:28Speaker 5: out and, and become somebody that we feel like is
- 51:34Speaker 5: playing at a level that we can win with. And
- 51:36Speaker 5: that goes far beyond Bryce. It goes throughout the whole team.
- 51:40Speaker 5: And so what you've done lately is very important in football.
- 51:44Speaker 2: So who's the backup? I don't know. I'm glad to
- 51:47Speaker 2: look because I think we're going to see him.
- 51:49Speaker 3: He's saddled with the $ 12 million, but he wasn't the
- 51:52Speaker 3: guy that brokered the deal. So I do love the
- 51:54Speaker 3: fact that Kyle Whittingham and Jason Beck, guys that came
- 51:57Speaker 3: from Utah can be like, you know what, we can
- 52:00Speaker 3: make a– I mean, it can't get any worse.
- 52:03Speaker 2: I'm not paying him. Y'all are paying him. But I'll
- 52:05Speaker 2: tell you, the problem was Jordan Marshall.
- 52:07Speaker 3: I thought he was going to be– I mean, you
- 52:08Speaker 3: let Justice Haynes go to Georgia Tech. I thought Jordan
- 52:11Speaker 3: Marshall was going to be really good. They couldn't run
- 52:13Speaker 3: the football. And I'll tell you, if you can't run
- 52:15Speaker 3: it against Western Michigan, I don't know how Michigan's going
- 52:18Speaker 3: to do it. They're going to play Oklahoma tight somehow.
- 52:21Speaker 3: We'll completely be away from that game. But if you
- 52:23Speaker 3: can't run it against Western Michigan, how in the hell
- 52:24Speaker 3: are you going to run it against Oklahoma and take pressure?
- 52:27Speaker 1: Off of Bryce Underwood. Tommy Carr is your backup. I
- 52:30Speaker 1: don't know if it's any relation to Lloyd.
- 52:32Speaker 6: No, it is.
- 52:33Speaker 2: It's CJ's little brother, I believe. That's CJ's brother? I
- 52:35Speaker 2: believe so.
- 52:36Speaker 6: Okay.
- 52:37Speaker 2: That is what a win in the chat says.
- 52:39Speaker 1: All right, I think you win. So Tommy Carr is
- 52:40Speaker 1: your backup, but now reading... By the way, I'm just
- 52:43Speaker 1: going to roll a freaking dice that he's going to
- 52:46Speaker 1: at least be half as good as his brother, which
- 52:48Speaker 1: would be better than what we got.
- 52:49Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Yeah, but you say that,
- 52:52Speaker 2: but let me... I'm sorry, Lance.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Let me read this line. Behind him, freshman Tommy Carr
- 52:56Speaker 1: held off veteran transfer Braden Fowler-Nicolosi.
- 53:00Speaker 2: For the backup job. Yeah, the guy from Colorado State.
- 53:02Speaker 1: So there was apparently the battle for backup, and Tommy
- 53:05Speaker 1: Carr barely won it, according to MLive. This is an
- 53:08Speaker 1: indictment on these massive NIL deals for high school recruits
- 53:13Speaker 1: coming out. But if you're desperate to get the big guy, right?
- 53:17Speaker 1: It was a bidding war between LSU and Michigan on
- 53:21Speaker 1: Bryce Underwood. So you always should say, well, You should
- 53:24Speaker 1: set a limit. You shouldn't pay over $ 2 million until
- 53:28Speaker 1: you get a high school recruit on campus to see
- 53:30Speaker 1: if he backs it up.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Well, you know what? If somebody else wants him, they're
- 53:33Speaker 2: going to pay $ 3 million.
- 53:34Speaker 1: That's how you get up to brokering these $ 12 and
- 53:36Speaker 1: $ 13 million deals. Just like with the number one overall
- 53:40Speaker 1: draft pick in the NFL, sometimes you're going to bust,
- 53:43Speaker 1: and Michigan had busted on this guy.
- 53:46Speaker 3: I remember when he was coming out, there was a
- 53:49Speaker 3: small camp that was like, he's not going against really
- 53:52Speaker 3: good competition in high school in Detroit. But the majority
- 53:55Speaker 3: of people we talked to, including everybody at that on
- 53:57Speaker 3: three party, was like, this guy is can't miss.
- 54:00Speaker 1: And LSU had him. Now, Brian Kelly gets fired either way, obviously.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Probably gets fired quicker with this guy. I mean, I
- 54:08Speaker 1: would think. He got fired pretty quick without him.
- 54:10Speaker 2: But what if he's still at LSU? There's no way
- 54:13Speaker 2: Lane would start him. You know what I'm saying? Well,
- 54:15Speaker 2: I mean, how much better could he be with Lane?
- 54:18Speaker 2: You're right.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Maybe Lane can unlock him in a way that Sherron
- 54:21Speaker 1: Moore and Kyle Whittingham have yet to be able to. Hey,
- 54:24Speaker 1: we'll talk about the start of the NFL season when
- 54:26Speaker 1: we come back. And we'll do our upset alert in
- 54:29Speaker 1: the next hour as we roll on. It's the next
- 54:31Speaker 1: round presented by our friends at Hard Rock Bets.
- 54:35Speaker 2: On Sport and State.
