• 0:35
  Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
• 0:39
Speaker 3: And I have the queen in the building, Lisa Odie. Hello.
• 0:45
Speaker 4: And Hollis Lewis. What's up, what's up?
• 0:47
Speaker 3: And today, we're going to try to cover like a
• 0:51
Speaker 3: whole host of different things today.
• 0:55
Speaker 5: A mini version of First Take.
• 0:57
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 0:58
  Speaker 5: A mini version.
• 0:59
Speaker 4: And led by The queen, Ms.
• 1:02
  Speaker 1: Odie.
• 1:04
Speaker 3: And me and Hollis are her co-hosts for the show today,
• 1:07
Speaker 3: and we'll just go from here.
• 1:09
  Speaker 4: Let's go.
• 1:09
  Speaker 5: Yes, all right.
• 1:10
  Speaker 4: Let's do that.
• 1:11
Speaker 5: So Carl approached me about trying this new format, and
• 1:15
Speaker 5: I was open to it. You know, I'm open to
• 1:17
  Speaker 5: new things.
• 1:18
Speaker 4: Well, you're in charge. Well, I like.
• 1:22
Speaker 5: That even better. Not only am I open to new things,
• 1:24
Speaker 5: but when I'm in charge in that new thing, it
• 1:26
Speaker 5: really appeals to me. But anyway... So we've got an
• 1:29
Speaker 5: overall theme tonight, and I know coaching was one of
• 1:32
Speaker 5: the things that Carl had mentioned in our thread this week,
• 1:35
Speaker 5: but we also want to talk about collegiate football. I
• 1:38
Speaker 5: know there were a few games this past weekend, but
• 1:41
Speaker 5: the traditional opening of most of college football conference play
• 1:46
Speaker 5: or out of conference and conference play will be starting
• 1:49
Speaker 5: Labor Day weekend, which is coming up this weekend. So
• 1:52
Speaker 5: we're going to talk about our two home state teams
• 1:55
Speaker 5: first to open, WVU and Marshall. And this question I'm
• 1:59
Speaker 5: going to ask both of you. I'll start with you, Carl.
• 2:01
Speaker 5: But how important is the outcome of the opening game
• 2:06
Speaker 5: for setting the mental tone and confidence for the rest
• 2:08
Speaker 5: of the season for a team?
• 2:10
  Speaker 3: I think it's critical, and I'll say I think it's
• 2:14
Speaker 3: critical from the coach's point of view because it takes
• 2:20
Speaker 3: the team into some kind of a place of confidence.
• 2:24
Speaker 3: But what happens in that is, let's say you're a
• 2:32
Speaker 3: struggling team. Likely you're going to end up being a
• 2:37
Speaker 3: team that you're going to play a team that's going
• 2:38
Speaker 3: to use you to make money, you know? And so
• 2:43
Speaker 3: that game is a game that you're not likely going
• 2:46
Speaker 3: to win, but what you want, that coach wants to
• 2:48
Speaker 3: see is how good you will play, how hard you'll play,
• 2:51
Speaker 3: that type of thing.
• 2:52
Speaker 4: If that answers... Yeah.
• 2:54
Speaker 5: It depends on what side of the coin you're on. Yeah.
• 2:57
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:57
Speaker 5: Whether you're the one traveling or you're the host.
• 3:00
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 3:01
  Speaker 4: Exactly.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: What do you think?
• 3:02
Speaker 4: I think it depends on your level.
• 3:04
Speaker 6: So if you're like, obviously, if you're LSU, Alabama, you're
• 3:06
Speaker 6: a power for a program that knows out of conference
• 3:09
Speaker 6: games are going to be critical for us.
• 3:11
  Speaker 4: Playoff positions.
• 3:11
Speaker 6: Now, the good thing about what's happening now is like
• 3:14
Speaker 6: playoff at every division is that that's not necessarily going
• 3:18
Speaker 6: to determine whether you go to the playoffs. So, you know,
• 3:22
Speaker 6: so it's not necessarily a win or loss. And I
• 3:24
Speaker 6: think to me, you know, and we'll talk about this
• 3:27
Speaker 6: later doing color commentating for state. What I kind of
• 3:31
Speaker 6: saw from that point of view was that it's very
• 3:34
Speaker 6: important to get your guys reps. So, for example, you know,
• 3:38
Speaker 6: if you get up big, then you can get your
• 3:40
Speaker 6: twos and threes in the game and get them some
• 3:42
Speaker 6: game time action. Because unfortunately, in college, you don't have
• 3:44
Speaker 6: the luxury of getting, you know, having like inner squad
• 3:48
Speaker 6: scrimmages and, you know, against different teams and gridaramas and
• 3:52
Speaker 6: different things of that nature. Or even if you get down,
• 3:55
Speaker 6: you can either get those inexperienced starters, more and more reps,
• 3:58
Speaker 6: you can kind of experiment, or you can get those
• 4:00
Speaker 6: other twos and threes in. So I think it's a
• 4:02
Speaker 6: good opportunity to set the tone, not only, you know,
• 4:05
Speaker 6: whether you win or lose, but it's also a good
• 4:07
Speaker 6: opportunity to get your players reps.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Hollis, with that, because I
• 4:12
Speaker 3: think that's a good analogy and.
• 4:18
Speaker 3: But what happens– okay, so let's go back to, like,
• 4:23
Speaker 3: let's say West Virginia State when I was there.
• 4:25
  Speaker 4: Okay, so.
• 4:27
Speaker 3: With the fan base not necessarily having any great expectation
• 4:32
Speaker 3: and let's say we are not winning– let's just say
• 4:38
Speaker 3: we're midway through the season and we're not really winning
• 4:40
Speaker 3: and you have– you're playing a team that is really
• 4:45
Speaker 3: good and we're just not able to– Keep up.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: Keep up with them.
• 4:52
Speaker 3: What is your thought process now as the head coach?
• 4:56
Speaker 4: What are you doing?
• 4:57
Speaker 3: Are you keeping your players in, or are you trying
• 5:01
Speaker 3: to get some experience from the younger players to get
• 5:06
  Speaker 3: them into it?
• 5:07
Speaker 6: Again, I think it depends on where you're at at
• 5:09
Speaker 6: that midway season. So, again, opening day is a little different.
• 5:12
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 5:12
Speaker 6: But if you're midway through the season and you still
• 5:14
Speaker 6: got a legitimate shot to either get a playoff run– or,
• 5:18
Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, or, you know, win a
• 5:22
Speaker 6: conference maybe, then you want to, you know, keep those
• 5:25
Speaker 6: guys in. Or maybe you want to get some of
• 5:27
Speaker 6: those twos and threes some experience. And again, it also
• 5:30
Speaker 6: depends on kind of who you got coming up. So
• 5:32
Speaker 6: you got to sort of play it by ear. And
• 5:33
Speaker 6: I think that's sort of a team by team thing. Yeah.
• 5:35
Speaker 6: But you want to make sure No matter what. And
• 5:38
Speaker 6: I guess I could kind of sum it up as this.
• 5:40
Speaker 6: No matter where you're at, whether you got a big
• 5:42
Speaker 6: win or your big loss, you have to coach through
• 5:44
  Speaker 6: the game.
• 5:45
  Speaker 1: OK.
• 5:45
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 5:46
Speaker 4: So those you got to you got to call this.
• 5:48
Speaker 6: And again, sometimes I think people think like you're, you know,
• 5:51
Speaker 6: running up the score. But now I got to coach
• 5:53
Speaker 6: these twos and threes like I'm coaching the ones because
• 5:55
Speaker 6: I'm going to need some of those guys to play.
• 5:57
Speaker 6: And I need my ones and twos to actually be
• 5:59
Speaker 6: able to like finish out games as well.
• 6:01
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 6:02
Speaker 5: So I'm going to move on, and you both kind
• 6:04
Speaker 5: of touched on this, but I'm going to kind of
• 6:06
Speaker 5: take this question a little bit further because it's going
• 6:08
Speaker 5: to be related to our home teams and what they're
• 6:10
Speaker 5: facing this weekend. So you have WVU in Morgantown. They're
• 6:14
Speaker 5: the hosts. They're hosting Coastal Carolina in Morgantown, of course.
• 6:17
Speaker 5: And then you've got Marshall who's visiting the Nittany Lions
• 6:21
Speaker 5: at Penn State. So, you know, there's got to be
• 6:24
Speaker 5: some different strategies those coaches are going to use when
• 6:26
Speaker 5: they take their guys out on the field. What do
• 6:28
Speaker 5: you think the different coaching strategies would be in those
• 6:32
Speaker 5: two different situations with WVU facing, you know, being the host,
• 6:36
Speaker 5: and then you've got Marshall going to Penn State?
• 6:40
Speaker 3: I would say Marshall going to Penn State, I think
• 6:45
Speaker 3: they're going to come out. You're going to obviously play
• 6:47
Speaker 3: your starters. You're going to go out and try to compete.
• 6:52
Speaker 3: And if I think this is the situation that I
• 6:55
Speaker 3: think in my head of what happens, let's say it's,
• 7:00
Speaker 3: 30 to nothing, you know, at the end of the
• 7:03
Speaker 3: first quarter or something like that. What are you doing?
• 7:07
Speaker 3: Are you– hopefully they're going to– they'll sub. If they sub,
• 7:12
Speaker 3: then we need to sub so that we can get
• 7:14
Speaker 3: some of that experience.
• 7:15
Speaker 4: Some of our kids can get that experience.
• 7:17
Speaker 5: You don't keep your starters in.
• 7:17
Speaker 4: I'm not going to keep them in if I can
• 7:20
  Speaker 4: do that.
• 7:20
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 7:20
Speaker 4: And that's going to depend on what they do. Okay.
• 7:23
Speaker 3: You know, if they start to sub to their second teams,
• 7:27
Speaker 3: third teams, I'm going to try to get to my
• 7:29
Speaker 3: second team or third team immediately. And there'll be some
• 7:31
Speaker 3: people who would say, no, I'm keeping my starters in
• 7:33
Speaker 3: because I want them to play.
• 7:36
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 7:37
Speaker 3: And to be able to play against a quality team.
• 7:40
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 7:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 7:41
  Speaker 4: That works.
• 7:42
Speaker 5: What do you think, Hollis?
• 7:43
Speaker 4: I think, so let's take Marshall first.
• 7:46
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: So you're going to a step up in competition.
• 7:48
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 7:49
Speaker 4: So you want to go in healthy. You want to
• 7:51
Speaker 4: come out healthy. There you go. Number one.
• 7:53
  Speaker 5: Right, right.
• 7:53
  Speaker 4: Number one.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: But also, we've seen Marshall in the past beat Virginia Tech.
• 7:58
Speaker 6: We've seen him beat Notre Dame. So it's a precedent
• 8:01
Speaker 6: to say, hey, they can win this game.
• 8:03
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 8:03
Speaker 6: Now, the danger in that is you have such a
• 8:07
Speaker 6: big game, big program, huge win. Sometimes I think what
• 8:11
Speaker 6: can happen in those situations, that's the Super Bowl.
• 8:14
  Speaker 4: We did it.
• 8:14
Speaker 6: And the rest of the season can be like a letdown.
• 8:17
Speaker 6: So it can be a good thing or bad thing.
• 8:19
Speaker 6: But I think, number one, you want to go in
• 8:20
Speaker 6: healthy and you want to exit healthy. When you're talking
• 8:24
Speaker 6: about WVU, and shout out to our WVU president. You know,
• 8:27
Speaker 6: he was the president of Coastal Carolina, so it's kind
• 8:29
Speaker 6: of a, you know, thing. But for WVU kind of
• 8:34
Speaker 6: playing down, quote unquote down, you want to assert dominance.
• 8:38
Speaker 4: So you want to start fast, and you want to
• 8:41
  Speaker 4: end that game.
• 8:42
Speaker 6: You want that game to be 35-none, 42-none. You want
• 8:46
Speaker 6: to go in. You want to hit them hard. You
• 8:48
Speaker 6: want to be able to about a third, late third,
• 8:50
Speaker 6: fourth quarter, you want to get your twos and threes in.
• 8:52
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 8:53
Speaker 6: And you want to even them get some touches and
• 8:55
Speaker 6: maybe a touchdown or two. So for WVU, you want
• 8:58
Speaker 6: to assert dominance early and you want to finish that
• 9:00
Speaker 6: game out with little to no quote-unquote competition or resistance
• 9:05
Speaker 6: from the other side.
• 9:05
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 9:06
Speaker 5: And I think the theme, excuse me, for both of
• 9:08
Speaker 5: you is to come out of those games injury-free.
• 9:11
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 9:11
Speaker 5: First game, try to keep everybody healthy.
• 9:13
  Speaker 4: Particularly for Marshall.
• 9:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, particularly for Marshall. Okay, so we're going to move
• 9:16
Speaker 5: on to the next question. So we've got the coaches
• 9:19
Speaker 5: at WU, Coach Rich Rod, he's in his second year
• 9:23
Speaker 5: there in Morgantown, and so is Coach Tony Gibson at Marshall.
• 9:28
Speaker 5: So what do you think the difference is in fan
• 9:32
Speaker 5: base expectations are at those two schools? What do you
• 9:36
Speaker 5: think the expectations are for the fans in Morgantown compared
• 9:39
Speaker 5: to the ones in Huntington?
• 9:41
Speaker 3: I think they both are going to be high. Just
• 9:47
Speaker 3: because it's Marshall, just because it's WVU, the understanding of
• 9:53
Speaker 3: what the expectation is for the team, it's always high
• 9:57
Speaker 3: no matter who you're playing.
• 9:59
Speaker 4: I don't know if the fans.
• 10:00
Speaker 3: base is always caring about who the team is that
• 10:07
Speaker 3: you're playing. They want to see you win. And I
• 10:10
Speaker 3: think that's the most important thing. And then you'll get
• 10:13
Speaker 3: some folks coming out of there saying, well, you know what?
• 10:15
Speaker 3: We did play well. You know, we did play well
• 10:17
Speaker 3: against them. And you're okay. Because I don't know if
• 10:20
Speaker 3: this is the kind of game that you could say.
• 10:22
Speaker 4: Oh, we need a new coach. You know, I don't
• 10:25
Speaker 4: think this is that kind of game. And it's so
• 10:27
  Speaker 4: early anyway.
• 10:28
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: Now, the question was about the season.
• 10:31
Speaker 5: About the season. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not just the game.
• 10:33
  Speaker 4: The whole season.
• 10:34
Speaker 6: Again, and I know these are two very different fan bases.
• 10:38
Speaker 6: And I think probably more Marshall where if you're rooting
• 10:41
Speaker 6: for Marshall, you probably kind of root for WVU a
• 10:43
Speaker 6: little bit. I think just in general, and I take
• 10:45
Speaker 6: it as a state perspective, they want to see a winner, right?
• 10:49
Speaker 6: I think it's been a long time because you got
• 10:51
Speaker 6: to understand where we were 20, 30 years ago, right?
• 10:54
Speaker 6: We had two programs that were rolling. And if you
• 10:57
Speaker 6: count Shepard in that, we had two– Three programs within
• 11:00
Speaker 6: the state that were actually competing for national championships, big-time
• 11:04
Speaker 6: bowl games, had big-time players, and at Division II level
• 11:08
Speaker 6: were in and out of the playoffs and championships every
• 11:10
Speaker 6: single year. And it's been down for about the last
• 11:13
Speaker 6: five to ten years. So I think now what the
• 11:16
Speaker 6: fan base on either side wants to see, and I
• 11:20
Speaker 6: think they will root for one another, they want to
• 11:22
Speaker 6: see Marshall win that. conference and dominate. They want to
• 11:26
Speaker 6: see a big-time player emerge, right? You want to see
• 11:29
Speaker 6: a player emerge from Marshall. I think Marshall's always been player-dominant,
• 11:34
Speaker 6: at least on a West Virginia level, and West Virginia's
• 11:36
Speaker 6: been team-dominant, right? So I think if we can see
• 11:39
  Speaker 6: a player emerge where it's just a big-time, first-round draft
• 11:42
Speaker 6: pick type of guy, I think that would serve the
• 11:44
  Speaker 6: fan base.
• 11:45
Speaker 4: If we see WVU.
• 11:47
Speaker 6: compete in the Big 12 to come down to where
• 11:50
Speaker 6: we're competing for the conference title and possibly creep into
• 11:54
Speaker 6: the playoffs. Maybe we're the 12th seed. Maybe we're just
• 11:57
Speaker 6: outside the cups of that. So I think, to me,
• 12:00
Speaker 6: if we could achieve one or two or maybe both
• 12:03
Speaker 6: of those things, to me, that's a successful season.
• 12:06
  Speaker 4: I agree.
• 12:07
Speaker 3: I agree with that, and I think that's a great point.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: And especially with the the love of Marshall and the
• 12:16
  Speaker 3: love of WVU.
• 12:18
  Speaker 5: Dedicated fans.
• 12:19
Speaker 3: The dedicated fans. I don't know if they always cross.
• 12:24
Speaker 3: They don't always cross paths.
• 12:27
Speaker 5: They don't always hold hands.
• 12:28
Speaker 4: They don't always hold.
• 12:29
Speaker 3: Hands, but I do think they are proud of both
• 12:33
Speaker 3: of them if they're winning in a big game.
• 12:35
Speaker 6: And I think, like, if you look back, like, you know,
• 12:38
Speaker 6: a Byron Leftwich, a Randy Moss, a Chad Pennington, in
• 12:40
Speaker 6: the state, we take ownership of that.
• 12:42
Speaker 4: That's true. You know, whether you're WVU or Marshall. So
• 12:43
  Speaker 4: I think.
• 12:44
Speaker 6: That's what I would like to see. I would like
• 12:46
Speaker 6: to see us get back to sort of that.
• 12:49
Speaker 4: Yeah. Do you think that there's– well, let me ask
• 12:55
  Speaker 4: this question.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: How long does it take for the fan base to
• 12:59
Speaker 3: see that star? This is one season. No, but do
• 13:03
Speaker 3: you think– I'm talking about in that season. Let's say
• 13:07
Speaker 3: I do well in the first game.
• 13:09
  Speaker 4: I see what you're saying.
• 13:09
Speaker 6: I think once you get to conference play, I think,
• 13:11
Speaker 6: you know– If you're out of conference, maybe you're out
• 13:14
Speaker 6: of a game or two, woo, woo, woo. But I
• 13:16
Speaker 6: think once you get heavy in a conference player, excuse me,
• 13:18
Speaker 6: play games and that player is still dominant, that's when
• 13:22
Speaker 6: you start to be like, okay, he's the guy.
• 13:24
  Speaker 5: Makes sense.
• 13:24
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 13:25
Speaker 5: So here we go. So we've talked about how Marshall
• 13:27
Speaker 5: and WU, sometimes the fans support each other. Sometimes they don't,
• 13:31
Speaker 5: especially when they're in the Cold Bowl. So here's the
• 13:33
Speaker 5: question for you guys. Do you think that playing that
• 13:36
Speaker 5: regular game between WVU and Marshall in football is Do
• 13:40
Speaker 5: you think that would be something that would hurt or
• 13:42
Speaker 5: help the state overall? Are you in favor of the
• 13:45
  Speaker 5: Cold Bowl returning?
• 13:47
Speaker 4: I'm in favor of it.
• 13:49
Speaker 3: I think it's something that I think the state would love,
• 13:53
Speaker 3: even if WVU is dominant in the game. And if
• 13:57
Speaker 3: they're dominant in the game, then I can understand, too,
• 14:00
Speaker 3: why Marshall, as an organization, as a team— are saying, like, no,
• 14:06
Speaker 3: we don't want to do that every year. But I
• 14:09
Speaker 3: think for the state, I think it's a great game
• 14:13
  Speaker 3: to play.
• 14:13
  Speaker 5: Do you?
• 14:14
  Speaker 4: I do.
• 14:14
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 14:15
  Speaker 4: I really do.
• 14:16
Speaker 3: Just because they're the two top college sports organizations in
• 14:21
  Speaker 3: the state.
• 14:22
  Speaker 5: Two flagships.
• 14:23
Speaker 4: Yes. I think it's ridiculous that they don't play. It's silly.
• 14:28
Speaker 6: And I think if you look at it from the
• 14:29
Speaker 6: past five years, Marshall would have beat WVU. Past five seasons,
• 14:35
  Speaker 6: Marshall had.
• 14:36
Speaker 4: A better football team.
• 14:38
Speaker 6: I'm not saying forever, but I'm saying about the past
• 14:41
Speaker 6: five seasons, Marshall's had a better football season, better football team.
• 14:45
  Speaker 4: They have.
• 14:47
  Speaker 6: So I think it's ridiculous that they don't play. I
• 14:49
Speaker 6: think it's, you know, it's one of them things when
• 14:51
Speaker 6: we talk about kind of the. where college sports is going,
• 14:55
Speaker 6: we have to get back to this. We got to
• 14:57
Speaker 6: get back to Robbins. We can have all.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: These walking conferences and do all this stuff.
• 15:02
Speaker 5: You've said that before.
• 15:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, we can do all this other stuff, but let's
• 15:04
Speaker 6: get back to a foundational piece where we can still
• 15:06
Speaker 6: hold on a piece of that tradition. I mean, the state,
• 15:09
Speaker 6: can you imagine what would be the price of that ticket, right?
• 15:13
  Speaker 4: Right now?
• 15:14
Speaker 5: The last time they played, was it in Morgantown, their
• 15:16
Speaker 5: very last meeting? It was in Morgantown, I think. Yeah,
• 15:18
Speaker 5: and I don't think they... Yeah, exactly, Randy. I don't think...
• 15:23
Speaker 5: I don't think they really, like, increased the prices, did they?
• 15:26
Speaker 4: But you know how it is now, though.
• 15:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It would be, yeah.
• 15:30
Speaker 4: Like resellers. We didn't have, like, internet like we do now.
• 15:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, you're right. That was back in the old days.
• 15:35
Speaker 5: All right, so this question is going to wrap up
• 15:37
Speaker 5: our WVU and Marshall football talk for tonight. And this
• 15:41
Speaker 5: is just kind of a fun question for you guys.
• 15:44
Speaker 5: So if either of you were offered a position to
• 15:47
Speaker 5: coach at WVU or Marshall at one of the state schools,
• 15:53
Speaker 5: Which one would you choose?
• 15:56
Speaker 4: I would take Marshall.
• 15:58
Speaker 5: Of course you would.
• 16:00
Speaker 6: I mean, it depends. Like, if I'm just going off, like,
• 16:03
Speaker 6: fandom and loyalty, like, I'm Marshall. Like, I would take Marshall.
• 16:07
Speaker 6: But if I'm, like, trying to get somewhere, I'm trying to, like.
• 16:09
Speaker 6: You know, I'm trying to get to that next big
• 16:12
Speaker 6: paying job that I'm going WVU.
• 16:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly. And I think the pressure in Morgantown
• 16:17
Speaker 5: is a little more intense because they have, they're in
• 16:20
Speaker 5: the Big 12. And, you know, to me, they're both tough.
• 16:25
  Speaker 5: Coaching jobs.
• 16:26
  Speaker 4: I think so too, 100%.
• 16:28
Speaker 5: But Huntington to me would be the path I would
• 16:30
Speaker 5: take first and then go from there.
• 16:32
Speaker 4: Well, let me ask this.
• 16:36
Speaker 3: Is it possible to go from Marshall to WVU?
• 16:42
Speaker 5: Doc Holliday went from WVU to Marshall, right?
• 16:45
Speaker 4: See, I can see that. I'm just asking, could you
• 16:50
Speaker 4: go the other way?
• 16:52
Speaker 5: I think they could.
• 16:52
Speaker 4: I think you could. If you're good enough, you're going
• 16:54
  Speaker 4: to go.
• 16:55
  Speaker 5: I think that's a possibility. I don't think it's ever happened.
• 16:58
  Speaker 4: I don't think a head coach, but I think we've
• 17:00
Speaker 4: seen a bunch of assistants.
• 17:01
  Speaker 5: Yeah, assistant coaches.
• 17:03
Speaker 6: The school, Charwon played state this weekend. Their coach, he
• 17:08
Speaker 6: coached both WVU and Marshall.
• 17:09
  Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
• 17:10
Speaker 5: Okay, makes sense. All right. Well, speaking of your debut
• 17:13
Speaker 5: this past, you just mentioned at Hollis. So we're going
• 17:15
Speaker 5: to move on to the next subject for tonight, and
• 17:17
Speaker 5: that is, Both of the gentlemen that I'm sitting here
• 17:20
Speaker 5: with tonight have experience calling live games. Hollis is currently
• 17:25
Speaker 5: at West Virginia State University as the caller announcer, correct?
• 17:29
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 17:29
Speaker 5: And then Carl was also, you were play-by-play, right, at
• 17:33
Speaker 5: Marshall in Huntington for a period of time. It was, what,
• 17:36
Speaker 5: a year or two ago? Yeah, just a couple years ago.
• 17:38
Speaker 4: A couple years ago.
• 17:39
Speaker 5: So I'm going to talk to you guys about those
• 17:40
Speaker 5: experiences in the booth beyond the field. Sure. I'll start
• 17:44
Speaker 5: with you, Carl. How do you train yourself to match
• 17:47
Speaker 5: the speed of a fast-moving game when you're announcing it?
• 17:51
Speaker 3: I think as a player, I think it's not as complicated.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: As it may seem. And I'll even, I'll say this.
• 18:02
Speaker 4: Did you do play-by-play or color? You were color. I
• 18:05
Speaker 4: was color. Oh, okay, you were color. Yeah, I was color.
• 18:09
Speaker 3: And so I think just depending on where you are
• 18:13
Speaker 3: and what role that you're playing, I think that, like
• 18:17
Speaker 3: I would say this about Hollis, like I wouldn't have
• 18:19
Speaker 3: any problem with him no matter where he was just
• 18:22
Speaker 3: because of, you know, who he is. And I think
• 18:25
Speaker 3: he can handle both of those kind of jobs and
• 18:27
Speaker 3: do a great job with them. For me, I'm more
• 18:32
Speaker 3: of freely, you know, I got to talk freely. Like
• 18:35
Speaker 3: I don't really have an opportunity. You don't follow a script. No,
• 18:38
  Speaker 3: I can't do a script and I don't.
• 18:39
Speaker 4: Even want to be tied down to one. No, you
• 18:41
  Speaker 4: do not.
• 18:41
  Speaker 5: I agree.
• 18:43
Speaker 3: So I'll give Hollis the key point as he's the
• 18:48
Speaker 3: man in either one.
• 18:49
  Speaker 4: Of those spots.
• 18:49
Speaker 5: How did you do it, Hollis?
• 18:50
Speaker 6: Well, the first thing I realized is that like the
• 18:53
Speaker 6: play-by-play is such a skill set.
• 18:55
  Speaker 4: It really is.
• 18:56
Speaker 6: Like once you're there and you're seeing everything that he's
• 18:58
Speaker 6: looking at. I had the opportunity to go with Daniel
• 19:02
Speaker 6: Woods this past weekend and he has like four or
• 19:05
Speaker 6: five papers he's looking at. He's rapidly calling the game.
• 19:07
Speaker 6: He's You got to have good eye discipline because you
• 19:10
Speaker 6: can't necessarily get caught up in like watching the game
• 19:13
Speaker 6: as a spectator. He's really keying in, giving players tips
• 19:16
Speaker 6: and everything like that. And the thing that I had to,
• 19:19
Speaker 6: you know, learn quickly, I'm trying to get my spot in,
• 19:24
Speaker 6: in between him doing the play by play. But at
• 19:26
Speaker 6: the same time, I'm trying to have some cohesion because
• 19:29
Speaker 6: I'm actually trying to not just like insert random things
• 19:33
Speaker 6: as he's calling game, but trying to work off of
• 19:35
Speaker 6: him a little bit. So it took me probably to
• 19:37
Speaker 6: like the third or fourth quarter to get like a
• 19:39
Speaker 6: little rhythm going with him.
• 19:40
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:41
Speaker 6: Because I kind of got to catch up because the
• 19:42
Speaker 6: thing where you're doing this type of job, you're really
• 19:45
Speaker 6: working off the play-by-play guy because he can't work off
• 19:49
  Speaker 6: of you.
• 19:49
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 19:50
Speaker 6: Have to work off of him. So, you know, and
• 19:53
Speaker 6: like I said, he's moving fast and different things of
• 19:55
Speaker 6: that nature. So I try to just really catch up.
• 19:57
Speaker 6: I was a little nervous. This was my first time
• 20:00
Speaker 6: doing it. So, but I think towards the end of
• 20:02
Speaker 6: the game, we started to get a little rhythm.
• 20:03
Speaker 3: Good. So, so let me ask you this. So, If
• 20:07
Speaker 3: I'm color, so I call, I say, this is what happened.
• 20:12
Speaker 3: And then from your seat to your point of, like,
• 20:16
Speaker 3: you're playing off of me, now you have to dissect
• 20:19
Speaker 3: that and make it into, quote, a fight to where
• 20:23
Speaker 3: everybody understands. Is that.
• 20:25
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's one of them things, like I said, he's
• 20:27
  Speaker 6: calling the handoff, da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da. He's doing his play-by-play thing,
• 20:31
Speaker 6: and you have to get in there and just give
• 20:33
Speaker 6: a quick analysis so you can say, hey, uh... you know,
• 20:37
Speaker 6: they threw that interception because, you know, he threw in
• 20:40
Speaker 6: the cover too. Or, you know, or you can sneak
• 20:43
Speaker 6: it in. Watch the play action here. You know what
• 20:45
Speaker 6: I'm saying? You kind of got to sneak it in.
• 20:47
Speaker 6: And just from me doing it, and I came back
• 20:49
Speaker 6: home after the game, and I watched some other games,
• 20:53
Speaker 6: and you could really see the high-level guys who, because
• 20:56
Speaker 6: the play-by-play, not to say it's standard, but it's more standardized,
• 20:59
Speaker 6: but the high-level guys who do the color, like the
• 21:01
Speaker 6: Troy Eggmans and those guys, like, you really see it's
• 21:04
  Speaker 6: a dip. Like, it's a skillset too. So again, it's
• 21:07
Speaker 6: just trying to pick up that rhythm with whoever you're
• 21:10
Speaker 6: working with. Cause everybody's style is a little different.
• 21:12
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 21:12
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 21:13
  Speaker 5: Oh, that's, that's good.
• 21:14
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 21:14
Speaker 5: So, all right. So, um, okay, here's the next question
• 21:17
Speaker 5: I have for both of you. And, um, since you
• 21:20
Speaker 5: were both doing the, the color announcing for your alma maters, right.
• 21:25
Speaker 5: Because you went to Marshall and you, you, you graduated
• 21:28
Speaker 5: from W West Virginia state university. How hard is it
• 21:31
Speaker 5: when you're doing the game or announcing the game and
• 21:34
Speaker 5: to hide your, your kind of your bias for your
• 21:37
Speaker 5: former team. Is that, does that ever kind of like
• 21:41
Speaker 5: play a factor in, in what you're saying?
• 21:43
Speaker 3: And I remember someone telling me that, um, that you
• 21:47
Speaker 3: have to be careful with the, with the bias of
• 21:50
  Speaker 3: your team.
• 21:51
Speaker 4: Like, like you can't say like, Oh, man, you know.
• 21:55
Speaker 4: They scored a touchdown. Go Hurd. Yeah.
• 21:58
Speaker 5: Or go Yellow Jackets or whatever.
• 22:00
Speaker 3: You still got to go back and say, okay, such
• 22:03
Speaker 3: and such on the other team did this.
• 22:04
Speaker 4: He missed this. They did that. That's how we got
• 22:07
Speaker 4: the touchdown. Or, see, I said we.
• 22:10
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 22:11
Speaker 4: They got the touchdown. Right.
• 22:13
Speaker 3: Because you get caught up in the we and it's
• 22:17
Speaker 3: us and all those kind of things.
• 22:18
Speaker 4: Which you can't really do that.
• 22:20
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: It's not you. It's not you. It's not us.
• 22:26
  Speaker 5: It's the game.
• 22:27
Speaker 3: And I think that's the hardest part. I think that
• 22:30
Speaker 3: was the hardest part for me is to separate myself
• 22:33
  Speaker 3: from it.
• 22:34
Speaker 6: Well, the way I understood it, I'm calling the Yellow
• 22:38
Speaker 6: Jackets game from a Yellow Jackets podcast. So I'm a fan.
• 22:42
Speaker 6: I don't, I mean, I'm not hiding it at all. Again,
• 22:44
Speaker 6: I think it would be different if you're like an
• 22:46
Speaker 6: MBS or CNN or something like that. So I was
• 22:49
Speaker 6: not objective at all. But I think the thing that
• 22:52
Speaker 6: I had a problem with is not getting caught up
• 22:55
Speaker 6: in the game. There was a couple of times where
• 22:56
Speaker 6: it was bad play and I like, I took my
• 22:58
Speaker 6: headset off and I'm like, what.
• 23:00
Speaker 4: Are we doing? You missed a tackle.
• 23:03
Speaker 6: So you gotta be careful on those little points. As
• 23:06
Speaker 6: far as where I'm at currently, I'm just, hey, I'm
• 23:09
Speaker 6: a fan, so I'm not hiding at all. So you're
• 23:12
Speaker 6: free to say whatever you want. Now, again, just because
• 23:15
Speaker 6: you have listeners at home, you don't want to start saying,
• 23:18
Speaker 6: I had to catch myself several times saying, like, we, us.
• 23:21
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 23:21
Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying? That's the hardest part. Like,
• 23:25
Speaker 6: Yellow Jackets, West Virginia State University, WVSU. So I had to, like,
• 23:28
Speaker 6: make sure I said that instead of saying, like, us
• 23:32
  Speaker 6: and we.
• 23:32
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 23:33
Speaker 3: Cause that is, and that's the hardest, that is the
• 23:35
Speaker 3: hardest thing is because again, you know that that's your
• 23:38
Speaker 3: school and, and you're thinking and you're watching it and
• 23:42
Speaker 3: you're like, Oh man, we just messed up or we
• 23:46
Speaker 3: just scored. And, and there's just, there's just no place
• 23:49
Speaker 3: for that. Unfortunately, you just can't do it.
• 23:52
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 23:53
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 23:53
Speaker 5: So I'm going to wrap up this segment guys. I'm
• 23:55
Speaker 5: going to ask you, and I know the answer to it,
• 23:57
Speaker 5: but I want to hear how, how your brain reacts
• 24:00
Speaker 5: to this, but, So when you see– of course, you
• 24:03
Speaker 5: were a defensive player. You were a quarterback on offense, Hollis.
• 24:06
Speaker 5: When you see the other side of the line lining
• 24:09
Speaker 5: up against the offense or the defense, and you can
• 24:12
Speaker 5: read it, can you just look at– right before the
• 24:16
Speaker 5: play takes off, can you pretty much tell what call
• 24:19
Speaker 5: is going to be made, what play is going to
• 24:22
Speaker 5: be happening just by looking at a lineup from your
• 24:25
  Speaker 5: past experiences?
• 24:26
Speaker 4: Sure. You want to? I would say not necessarily, but
• 24:31
Speaker 4: I think there is a rhythm.
• 24:33
  Speaker 2: Right. Right.
• 24:33
Speaker 6: So like one time during the game, I'd like accurately
• 24:37
Speaker 6: like watch the play action here because I knew it
• 24:38
Speaker 6: was going to be a play action.
• 24:39
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 24:40
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 24:40
Speaker 6: So like I knew it was coming in. It was
• 24:42
Speaker 6: a play action. So there's a couple of times in
• 24:44
Speaker 6: which I was able to pick up on the rhythm. Now, again,
• 24:47
Speaker 6: you can like assess scheme and I can sometimes tell
• 24:50
Speaker 6: what's going on. And again, I think that's one of
• 24:52
Speaker 6: the things as you do it more and as you
• 24:54
Speaker 6: like interview the team and spend more time with the team,
• 24:57
Speaker 6: you'll probably be able to pick up on the calls.
• 24:59
  Speaker 4: Everything, yeah.
• 24:59
Speaker 6: But, you know, particularly with kind of at this level
• 25:03
Speaker 6: where you don't necessarily have the tape and the information
• 25:06
Speaker 6: about the opposing team, particularly if they're out of conference,
• 25:09
Speaker 6: you may not know, but there is a rhythm that you,
• 25:12
Speaker 6: being around football your whole life, that you can, you know,
• 25:15
  Speaker 6: pick up on.
• 25:15
Speaker 3: And to that, I'll pick up and kind of describe
• 25:19
Speaker 3: the rhythms It's knowing what– like for him as an
• 25:24
Speaker 3: offensive player, as a quarterback especially, he's looking at it
• 25:27
Speaker 3: and now he's thinking, oh, it's third down and it's three.
• 25:31
Speaker 4: Oh, watch this. Right.
• 25:34
Speaker 3: Because he can kind of– he's kind of seen it,
• 25:37
Speaker 3: understands it, like this might be what it is. For
• 25:39
Speaker 3: me as a defensive player, it's exactly the same thing,
• 25:42
Speaker 3: just the opposite side of it. And I'm not going
• 25:45
Speaker 3: to say you're right all the time, but– it is
• 25:49
Speaker 3: just something that you just can't help. It's like sitting there,
• 25:52
  Speaker 3: like you're looking at it, you're like, and there's a
• 25:54
Speaker 3: feel that you get, like.
• 25:56
Speaker 5: Because you remember it from when you were on the
• 25:58
  Speaker 5: field playing.
• 25:59
Speaker 3: Oh, they're going to throw a deep ball right here. Hey, guys,
• 26:01
Speaker 3: back up, back up. Be looking for the deep ball.
• 26:03
Speaker 3: You know, it's just, and it just comes to you.
• 26:06
Speaker 3: And I hate to say it, but most of the
• 26:09
Speaker 3: time you're accurate on that call.
• 26:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know situational football, too. So you know situations.
• 26:15
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 26:16
Speaker 6: You know, third and long, we have an idea about
• 26:17
Speaker 6: what they're going to do. And also, you know, once
• 26:19
Speaker 6: you get down to where you can start to identify, like,
• 26:22
Speaker 6: their personnel, who's the guy who's not, da-da-da-da. So you
• 26:25
Speaker 6: can start to, at the very least, you may not
• 26:28
Speaker 6: know the play, but you know, like, they're probably going
• 26:30
Speaker 6: to be looking for, you know, this receiver or this
• 26:32
Speaker 6: running back or whatever.
• 26:33
Speaker 3: Because you'll know who the best receiver, the best running back.
• 26:36
Speaker 3: You'll know those kinds of things already.
• 26:39
  Speaker 1: Right, right.
• 26:41
  Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
• 26:41
Speaker 5: So we're going to take a little break from the
• 26:43
Speaker 5: coaching theme, and we're going to go into what happened
• 26:46
Speaker 5: in the Mountain East Conference this past weekend, Hollis. There
• 26:52
Speaker 5: were some things, there were some pretty monumental things that
• 26:56
Speaker 5: happened in that conference. I think Concord beat a D1 team.
• 27:00
  Speaker 2: Is that correct?
• 27:00
Speaker 5: Yes, that is correct. And West Virginia Wesleyan broke the
• 27:05
Speaker 5: nation's longest losing streak with 35 games. They finally beat,
• 27:09
Speaker 5: I think it was post-university. Yeah, yeah. So do you
• 27:14
Speaker 5: have anything to add to that?
• 27:16
Speaker 6: I mean, this is so good for the conference, right?
• 27:19
Speaker 6: I think, you know, like when you can show– because, again,
• 27:22
Speaker 6: what we talk about when we talk about NIA on transfer,
• 27:25
Speaker 6: we always talk about sort of the pillaging of like
• 27:28
Speaker 6: particularly like schools like Concord State and Division II programs.
• 27:32
Speaker 6: But I think that when you can have a situation
• 27:35
Speaker 6: like this where you can have those players come together
• 27:38
Speaker 6: and actually beat, you know, a Division I, II, and
• 27:41
Speaker 6: they have Dom Collins.
• 27:42
Speaker 4: He played at Princeton. He was a West Virginia Kennedy
• 27:45
Speaker 4: Award Player of the Year. He was at WVU.
• 27:47
Speaker 6: He was at Concord, then WVU, then transferred back to WVU.
• 27:51
Speaker 6: It's letting those kids know that who may not fit
• 27:54
Speaker 6: a metric to be at a Division I school, hey,
• 27:56
Speaker 6: you can still go to this school and you can
• 27:58
Speaker 6: still be just as dominant. You can still have a
• 28:00
Speaker 6: place here. You can be an all-time great here. And
• 28:03
Speaker 6: if you're that good and if you're that together, then
• 28:05
Speaker 6: you can beat those teams. And in addition, like I said,
• 28:08
Speaker 6: it sounded like we beat a Division I team, then
• 28:10
Speaker 6: we got out of the hole with Wesley. So it
• 28:12
Speaker 6: really like shored up the conference. And I hope like
• 28:14
Speaker 6: this can just bring an energy to the conference and
• 28:16
Speaker 6: we can really– you know, put a bunch of teams
• 28:19
Speaker 6: in the playoffs for this year.
• 28:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 28:21
Speaker 5: I mean, I think referring to the Concord game, you know,
• 28:25
Speaker 5: they were previously against D1 schools 0-10. So this was,
• 28:29
Speaker 5: you know, I mean, they played.
• 28:30
  Speaker 4: And that's typical. That's typical.
• 28:33
Speaker 5: But they don't shy away from the big games. So
• 28:37
Speaker 5: this was a monumental win for them.
• 28:38
  Speaker 3: And I don't want to– when I say this, I
• 28:40
Speaker 3: don't mean to take– take away from the win. But
• 28:44
Speaker 3: in most cases, usually those are games that you make money.
• 28:47
Speaker 3: The team will pay you to play them.
• 28:49
  Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, sure.
• 28:49
  Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a money game.
• 28:51
Speaker 3: And now, so think about that. I'm going to pay
• 28:54
Speaker 3: you to play, and you then turn around and beat me?
• 28:58
Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, right? That's kind of what Marshall did
• 29:02
Speaker 5: at Notre Dame that year. That was embarrassing. I'm sure
• 29:05
Speaker 5: some heads rolled on that one.
• 29:07
  Speaker 4: No question.
• 29:08
Speaker 3: And then, so now the question you have is– Do
• 29:11
Speaker 3: I want to even do that? And the question becomes,
• 29:15
Speaker 3: was this a player issue? Were the players just overconfident,
• 29:18
Speaker 3: not playing, thinking that, oh, this is going to be
• 29:22
Speaker 3: an easy win? And all of a sudden now, and
• 29:25
Speaker 3: you know as well as I do, Hollis, if you
• 29:28
Speaker 3: think it's an easy game and you're just out there,
• 29:31
Speaker 3: it's hard to turn it like.
• 29:33
Speaker 4: You're just going to turn on the greatness all of
• 29:35
Speaker 4: a sudden. And I think it's an incentive, right?
• 29:37
Speaker 6: So if I'm playing at a Concord or a II team,
• 29:40
Speaker 6: I'm playing that Division I because Louisiana Christian beat Northwestern.
• 29:45
Speaker 6: So there's like four smaller schools that beat schools in
• 29:49
Speaker 6: higher divisions. That's the NIA in whatever it is.
• 29:52
  Speaker 4: In AIA.
• 29:53
  Speaker 5: In AIA, yeah.
• 29:54
Speaker 4: That beat a Division I team.
• 29:56
Speaker 6: So now it's incentive to say, hey, I could get
• 29:59
Speaker 6: some tape and I may be able to go to
• 30:00
Speaker 6: the next level and get some NIL money. So it's
• 30:03
Speaker 6: a real big incentive for those lower level schools playing
• 30:06
Speaker 6: those Division I schools now.
• 30:08
Speaker 3: So you said about the NIL, are you saying that
• 30:12
Speaker 3: if I'm one of those players that had a lot
• 30:14
Speaker 3: to do with us winning– All of a sudden, somebody
• 30:17
  Speaker 3: could see me.
• 30:18
Speaker 4: That's some tape against the school.
• 30:20
Speaker 6: So if I dominated or played really well, then that
• 30:24
Speaker 6: is a justification point to say, hey, if I enter
• 30:27
Speaker 6: the transfer portal, then maybe I can go to a
• 30:30
Speaker 6: bigger school next year or whatever.
• 30:31
Speaker 3: See, and that's the toughest part for the schools in
• 30:38
Speaker 3: a situation like that. we're celebrating winning this game and
• 30:42
Speaker 3: Hollis was key to us winning it. So now the
• 30:46
Speaker 3: question is, can we keep him?
• 30:49
  Speaker 5: Right, right.
• 30:50
Speaker 3: Because now somebody's going to see that. Somebody's going to
• 30:53
Speaker 3: be like, who was that dude? Who was that quarterback?
• 30:55
Speaker 3: Let's see if we can get him here.
• 30:56
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 30:57
Speaker 4: And all of a sudden they drop the money. He's gone.
• 31:00
Speaker 5: Which has been a longstanding theme for NIL, for us,
• 31:03
Speaker 5: for these smaller schools.
• 31:04
  Speaker 3: Absolutely.
• 31:05
Speaker 5: They can't keep the good players.
• 31:06
Speaker 4: They just can't. They cannot keep the great players. They
• 31:07
  Speaker 4: just cannot.
• 31:08
Speaker 6: But I say this, too. At State, we had one
• 31:11
Speaker 6: of our top receivers. He tried to transfer out twice.
• 31:16
Speaker 6: So he went to like Iowa or Idaho somewhere.
• 31:18
Speaker 4: Then he came back.
• 31:19
Speaker 6: Then he went to another division to spend like maybe
• 31:22
Speaker 6: a summer camp there or something and ended up coming back.
• 31:25
Speaker 6: And the thing is, you got to ask yourself, too,
• 31:28
Speaker 6: is that you may spend a year or two at
• 31:30
Speaker 6: maybe one of these programs. But are you going to
• 31:32
Speaker 6: be remembered like, you.
• 31:34
  Speaker 4: Know, a legacy?
• 31:34
Speaker 6: Yeah. Are you going to have a legacy there where
• 31:37
Speaker 6: if you're a Dom Collins right now at Concord? where
• 31:40
Speaker 6: you're having great games and you're part of the reason
• 31:44
Speaker 6: why they can have these big wins, you're going to
• 31:46
Speaker 6: have a legacy. You're going to go Hall of Fame.
• 31:49
Speaker 6: You may always have a job. You may always be
• 31:51
Speaker 6: part of that community in some capacity.
• 31:53
Speaker 5: They will erect a statue with your name on it.
• 31:56
Speaker 6: And what we see, legacy is important because it may
• 31:58
Speaker 6: be a couple of dollars now, which, again, these guys
• 32:00
Speaker 6: ain't going to get millions, but it may be a
• 32:02
Speaker 6: couple of dollars now. But, you know, if you're able
• 32:04
Speaker 6: to stay somewhere three or four years, that legacy is
• 32:07
Speaker 6: going to last forever.
• 32:08
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 32:09
Speaker 3: I mean, you think about, you know, when you start
• 32:11
Speaker 3: thinking about that and you let's just use a Randy
• 32:13
Speaker 3: Moss as an example. Not that he wouldn't have been
• 32:18
Speaker 3: a standout anywhere, but, you know, for Marshall to be
• 32:21
  Speaker 3: able to say.
• 32:23
Speaker 4: Randy Moss, you know. played here and here's what he
• 32:27
Speaker 4: did and all those kind of things.
• 32:30
Speaker 3: I still say that that has to be a pat
• 32:34
  Speaker 3: on his back.
• 32:34
Speaker 4: That has to be a little bit of confidence for
• 32:37
Speaker 4: him inside somewhere. Like, how do you not want that?
• 32:41
  Speaker 5: Right, right.
• 32:42
Speaker 3: You know, so your hometown– From high school to college,
• 32:46
Speaker 3: you played in your hometown, and.
• 32:48
Speaker 4: You were unbelievably great. You know, worldwide great. Right, right.
• 32:54
Speaker 5: And it just made the fans love him even more.
• 32:56
Speaker 4: Absolutely. His whole story.
• 32:58
Speaker 5: Just made people love him. And then, of course, I
• 33:00
Speaker 5: just want to say, you know, we kind of highlighted
• 33:03
Speaker 5: on the Concord game, but, you know, what a great
• 33:05
Speaker 5: feeling for West Virginia Wesleyan to get that monkey off
• 33:08
Speaker 5: their back. I mean, come on, you know. They had
• 33:11
Speaker 5: not won a game since October of 2022. That's three
• 33:14
Speaker 5: and a half seasons. That's a long time.
• 33:16
Speaker 4: Three and a half seasons.
• 33:17
Speaker 5: That's a long time. So those boys, they also have
• 33:19
Speaker 5: a new, do they have a new head coach? Mike,
• 33:21
Speaker 5: is it Mike Keller? I don't know how long he's
• 33:23
  Speaker 5: been there.
• 33:24
  Speaker 4: I know a local guy, T.R. Dues, he's up there.
• 33:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 33:26
  Speaker 4: Conditioning coordinator.
• 33:28
Speaker 5: So shout out to them. I just wanted to mention that,
• 33:30
Speaker 5: you know, that's a, And how do you think, you know,
• 33:33
Speaker 5: how does the team feel after a win like that?
• 33:36
Speaker 5: Is it just a relief?
• 33:37
  Speaker 3: I think it's great. I think that they– I can't
• 33:39
Speaker 3: even imagine how they were feeling. But it sets them
• 33:45
Speaker 3: up for positive thought processes every week.
• 33:51
Speaker 4: We can win this game now. You know, we don't
• 33:54
Speaker 4: have to go into that game.
• 33:55
Speaker 3: Because what happens, and Hollis can agree to this, teams
• 34:00
Speaker 3: that lose– and have a history of losing, the moment
• 34:04
Speaker 3: you go, all of a sudden the score is 7-0, 14-0,
• 34:09
Speaker 3: the first thing you're thinking about, okay.
• 34:11
Speaker 4: Here we go again. We're going to lose.
• 34:15
  Speaker 1: Now.
• 34:15
  Speaker 5: It's a mindset, isn't it?
• 34:17
Speaker 4: It is a mindset.
• 34:19
Speaker 3: It is a mindset that some players can't get over it.
• 34:24
Speaker 3: And then there are some players who are just going
• 34:27
Speaker 3: to keep playing. Yeah, and then Post beat them bad
• 34:30
Speaker 3: last year. Post beat them, like, about 40 or 50
• 34:33
  Speaker 3: points last year.
• 34:33
  Speaker 5: Wow.
• 34:34
Speaker 4: And to come out and, like I said, they had
• 34:36
Speaker 4: a pretty dominant win.
• 34:37
  Speaker 5: Yeah, they won 31 to 13. 31 to 13.
• 34:39
  Speaker 4: That's a pretty dominant win.
• 34:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's big.
• 34:41
  Speaker 4: That's dominant.
• 34:42
Speaker 6: And again, you just want to start the season off right.
• 34:44
Speaker 6: You want to get things on the right foot. And now,
• 34:47
Speaker 6: it's one of them things, now you know you can win, right?
• 34:49
Speaker 6: So now you have, like, a a script to say, okay,
• 34:53
Speaker 6: we can do this after three and a half seasons,
• 34:55
Speaker 6: which that is a long time not to win.
• 34:57
  Speaker 3: A ball game.
• 34:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, oh my gosh.
• 34:58
Speaker 3: And let me ask this question because I know this
• 35:02
Speaker 3: always seems to happen. To your point, Hollis, about how
• 35:06
Speaker 3: important it is to win, and I would even say
• 35:10
  Speaker 3: that it's.
• 35:12
Speaker 4: Equally as important to win early. Yeah, absolutely.
• 35:17
Speaker 3: But most teams that have a losing record have tough
• 35:22
Speaker 3: seasons behind them, they always.
• 35:26
Speaker 4: Seem to schedule a team because they're going to make money.
• 35:30
Speaker 3: You know, so, you know, we went and played Marshall,
• 35:35
Speaker 3: you know, with no real chance of possibly winning. But
• 35:42
Speaker 3: that loss... For me as the coach, okay, Sam, we've
• 35:45
Speaker 3: got some money to get help with some scholarship stuff
• 35:48
Speaker 3: and all this kind of stuff.
• 35:49
Speaker 4: But for the team, for the players, what is that?
• 35:53
Speaker 3: I mean, that doesn't do anything for them. Right. You know,
• 35:57
Speaker 3: we're not really helping them in that situation. Am I
• 36:01
Speaker 3: wrong thinking that way? Because I know that's how it happens,
• 36:05
Speaker 3: and I know that people are going to continue to–
• 36:07
Speaker 3: coaches and teams are going to continue to do that.
• 36:10
Speaker 4: But is that not a reality?
• 36:12
  Speaker 5: No.
• 36:12
Speaker 6: I think it certainly is a reality. And I hate
• 36:15
Speaker 6: the system that we have. Like, to me, it should
• 36:17
Speaker 6: be revenue sharing. But, you know, that's another conversation. Because
• 36:20
Speaker 6: you shouldn't be forced to play these teams just for
• 36:23
Speaker 6: a check. You should play these teams when you're ready
• 36:26
Speaker 6: to play these teams.
• 36:28
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 36:28
Speaker 6: You know, you see they played Grand Valley State, which
• 36:30
Speaker 6: is a perennial Division II powerhouse. We played West Florida,
• 36:34
Speaker 6: which is now a Division I team. State played West
• 36:37
Speaker 6: Florida last year, which is now a Division I team.
• 36:39
Speaker 6: So you want to, like, play those teams when you think, okay,
• 36:42
Speaker 6: I got some guys. We're ready to test those waters. So,
• 36:48
Speaker 6: you know, I would like to see sort of an
• 36:50
Speaker 6: all college football revenue sharing system where we can, you know,
• 36:53
Speaker 6: divvy out some of those funds so we don't have
• 36:55
  Speaker 6: to do this.
• 36:55
Speaker 5: But hasn't that been going on for years, though? I mean, really,
• 36:58
Speaker 5: even before NIL. I mean, that was just, that's the
• 37:00
Speaker 5: way it usually happens. The bigger schools.
• 37:02
  Speaker 4: Contract the smaller.
• 37:04
Speaker 5: It's almost like a scrimmage for them.
• 37:07
Speaker 4: Yes. And you're 100% right that.
• 37:10
Speaker 3: But I think what's new is the reality of how
• 37:15
Speaker 3: much money is in college football or college sports as
• 37:19
Speaker 3: a whole. All of a sudden now people understand when
• 37:23
  Speaker 3: you're paying a player, you know, $ 300, 000 or $ 400, 000 to play,
• 37:25
Speaker 3: what could you– like what could you do– financially, you know,
• 37:36
Speaker 3: to make your team more notable or whatever the situation is.
• 37:42
Speaker 6: I mean, it just doesn't make any sense to me.
• 37:44
Speaker 6: And you want to have Division II teams play each other.
• 37:47
Speaker 6: So you want to have the, you know, because it's
• 37:49
Speaker 6: a bunch of parity even within that. So they can
• 37:51
Speaker 6: play each other and, you know, you don't have to
• 37:52
Speaker 6: do all this stuff.
• 37:54
Speaker 5: Well, all right. Let's move on. We'll get back to
• 37:56
Speaker 5: coaching styles. How's that? Really quick. And then if we
• 37:59
Speaker 5: have time, we'll hit on some things. I know Hollis
• 38:02
Speaker 5: has a subject he wants to talk about in NFL.
• 38:05
Speaker 5: So let's just talk about coaching. Which sport, I'm going
• 38:09
Speaker 5: to ask you guys this question to open, which sport
• 38:11
Speaker 5: would you pick as the most challenging to be a
• 38:14
Speaker 5: head coach and why?
• 38:17
Speaker 4: I'm going to say football. I'm going to say football.
• 38:20
Speaker 5: Wait a minute. You threw me a curveball here.
• 38:24
Speaker 3: I'm going to say football because one, you got 11
• 38:26
Speaker 3: guys out there and you've got you got you got kickoff, kickoff, return, punt, punt, return.
• 38:32
Speaker 3: You got all these different places where you got to
• 38:35
Speaker 3: put the quote the best players out there. But, okay,
• 38:39
Speaker 3: so on punt team, I don't want all my really, like,
• 38:42
Speaker 3: I can't put my best players out there, but I
• 38:45
Speaker 3: want to be able to at least get down and
• 38:47
  Speaker 3: make the tackle.
• 38:48
  Speaker 4: So you say.
• 38:50
Speaker 3: I'm going to say football just because of all the
• 38:52
Speaker 3: different scenarios that come up.
• 38:55
Speaker 6: I say at the college level. I'm going to say
• 38:57
Speaker 6: football before a different reason. But just to mention basketball,
• 39:00
Speaker 6: I think what's increasingly difficult about basketball now is that
• 39:04
Speaker 6: everybody's– your top players are one and done, so you're
• 39:06
Speaker 6: not keeping those kids more than maybe two years. And basketball,
• 39:10
Speaker 6: you have to recruit internationally now. So now you've got to, like, globetrot,
• 39:14
Speaker 6: go all over the world to find talent. So that
• 39:17
Speaker 6: becomes difficult because you're not just looking in your backyard.
• 39:19
Speaker 6: You just can't go to this tournament. You may have
• 39:21
Speaker 6: to send coaches to Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada, wherever, right?
• 39:25
Speaker 6: But I think the thing with football, particularly at a
• 39:27
Speaker 6: collegiate level, is that it's immense pressure because you are...
• 39:33
Speaker 6: The pressure's on the head football coach to carry the
• 39:36
  Speaker 6: athletic department.
• 39:37
Speaker 4: Yeah. You know what I mean?
• 39:39
Speaker 6: So, like, in normal situations, if you don't... Like, if
• 39:43
Speaker 6: you were at Michigan and you fumble, you know, you
• 39:46
Speaker 6: make a bunch of coaching mistakes... and you drop revenue
• 39:50
Speaker 6: over a course of years, then that can affect the
• 39:52
Speaker 6: whole athletic department. They were talking about, I heard something
• 39:55
Speaker 6: with the Wisconsin coach. Wisconsin, you know, football has always
• 39:59
Speaker 6: kind of been middle of the road. They kind of
• 40:01
Speaker 6: always been teetering 10 wins. They always getting big bowl games,
• 40:04
Speaker 6: known for having big athletic, you know, offense alignment and
• 40:07
Speaker 6: running backs, right? Well, you had the Cincinnati coach. He
• 40:10
Speaker 6: gets the job. Now he wants to change to an
• 40:11
Speaker 6: air raid offense where he's You don't have the personnel.
• 40:14
Speaker 6: That's not the personnel in your backyard. So now he
• 40:17
Speaker 6: just messed it all up. They're three and four wins.
• 40:21
Speaker 6: So now that affects the economy of the university. You
• 40:25
Speaker 6: know what I'm saying? If you're not having the ticket sales,
• 40:27
Speaker 6: people are not coming to the game. So you don't
• 40:28
Speaker 6: even hear about Wisconsin football where they would have Heisman
• 40:31
Speaker 6: Trophy winners or at least be in a conversation, running
• 40:33
Speaker 6: backs every year, first-round offensive linemen every year. It's not
• 40:37
Speaker 6: been that way over the past four or five seasons.
• 40:39
Speaker 6: So I would say because you have that pressure on,
• 40:41
Speaker 6: particularly at the college football level, that's the hardest job.
• 40:45
Speaker 4: Basketball. Football. Football. Football.
• 40:48
Speaker 5: And then basketball second, right?
• 40:49
Speaker 6: Basketball just because you have to recruit internationally now. And
• 40:52
Speaker 6: you don't have stabilization within the program to keep guys
• 40:55
Speaker 6: more than a year or two.
• 40:57
  Speaker 5: I say all of them. I can't pick one. I
• 41:00
Speaker 5: think now in the day and age of the transfer
• 41:02
Speaker 5: portal and the NIL– the things that those head coaches
• 41:06
Speaker 5: have to deal with compared to what they dealt with
• 41:08
Speaker 5: even 10, 15 years ago is phenomenal change.
• 41:12
Speaker 3: Imagine, just imagine, to your point, Lisa, just imagine like, okay,
• 41:17
  Speaker 3: so I've got Hollis, and I already know he's a
• 41:21
  Speaker 3: great player.
• 41:22
  Speaker 4: Let's say he's a freshman.
• 41:24
Speaker 3: Maybe I didn't start him right out of the beginning
• 41:26
Speaker 3: of the season, but I'm going to get him in, say,
• 41:29
Speaker 3: after three or four games. He gets in, does exactly
• 41:32
Speaker 3: what I thought he could do. Now, the problem I
• 41:35
Speaker 3: have is I got two issues. Can I get the
• 41:40
Speaker 3: money to pay him?
• 41:41
Speaker 4: Because he's going to be asking.
• 41:42
  Speaker 5: Absolutely.
• 41:44
Speaker 3: Because if I can't, what's my chances of keeping him?
• 41:48
Speaker 3: And so now I recruit him, he comes in, he
• 41:52
Speaker 3: likes everything about what came with it. And then the
• 41:56
Speaker 3: moment that he becomes this notable person.
• 41:59
Speaker 5: He hits the road.
• 42:01
Speaker 3: He's got to hit the road. And I'd like to
• 42:04
Speaker 3: be able to say that's not right for him to
• 42:06
Speaker 3: do that. He should be more loyal than that. That's
• 42:09
Speaker 3: not the way it is. That's not the way.
• 42:10
Speaker 5: It's just not the mentality.
• 42:12
Speaker 4: No, it's not. And I can't control what his background is,
• 42:15
Speaker 4: why he wants the money. You just can't– you can't
• 42:20
  Speaker 4: do that.
• 42:20
Speaker 5: And the deeper we go into this and the further
• 42:22
Speaker 5: we go, we get away from the old days of,
• 42:25
Speaker 5: you know, players staying their full eligibility at a school,
• 42:30
Speaker 5: the more normalized it is. So, you know, it's not
• 42:33
Speaker 5: going to be a thing that people expect legacies or
• 42:37
Speaker 5: players to stay. I mean, it's not– People won't look
• 42:41
Speaker 5: at it disrespectful. Right. They'll say that's just part of it.
• 42:43
Speaker 5: That's just, you know, in fact, we're almost there now.
• 42:46
Speaker 4: Are we not there? I was going to say, are
• 42:48
  Speaker 4: we not there?
• 42:49
Speaker 5: I think some of the old school, like college, like
• 42:51
Speaker 5: Hollis has mentioned on here before that, you know, he's
• 42:53
Speaker 5: not as big of a fan of college football because
• 42:56
Speaker 5: of those reasons. Because we can't, we don't have continuity.
• 42:59
Speaker 5: You know, there's not the rivalries playing anymore. It's all
• 43:02
Speaker 5: about the money. And, you know, you don't know the
• 43:05
Speaker 5: names of the players on the field half the time,
• 43:08
Speaker 5: you know, even at your alma mater. So I think
• 43:11
Speaker 5: this is kind of the last of the generations that
• 43:14
Speaker 5: understood the old ways of college football. And the further
• 43:18
Speaker 5: we get away from us and the more this generation
• 43:21
Speaker 5: comes up, it just won't be a thing that people
• 43:24
  Speaker 5: think about twice.
• 43:25
Speaker 3: So let me ask this question. To your point, if
• 43:30
Speaker 3: this is not taking or changing thoughts or not about
• 43:36
Speaker 3: changing how this is going– let's say in the next
• 43:40
Speaker 3: three to four years, if it's not corrected, not capped,
• 43:46
Speaker 3: is it over? I mean, is it over really for
• 43:49
Speaker 3: the reality of sports?
• 43:52
Speaker 6: Nah, they're changing it. So it's like this is not
• 43:54
Speaker 6: going to be sustainable. So I think with what Nick
• 43:58
Speaker 6: Samp is trying to do at the federal level, they
• 44:01
Speaker 6: already got like the five-year implementation in. So I think
• 44:05
Speaker 6: slowly but surely, They're going to right this ship. It's
• 44:08
Speaker 6: never going to go back to what it was. But
• 44:10
Speaker 6: I think after they get the players stable as far
• 44:12
Speaker 6: as just saying, like, oh, you got five years now.
• 44:15
Speaker 6: You can only transfer maybe twice now. So I think
• 44:18
Speaker 6: they're going to correct it. And then I think the
• 44:20
Speaker 6: next thing they're going to work on is conference just
• 44:22
Speaker 6: to make it. Because I think at this point, you
• 44:24
Speaker 6: probably just get rid of conferences and just make it regional.
• 44:27
Speaker 6: and they'll expand it to 24 playoff teams. So I
• 44:30
Speaker 6: think they're going to figure out a way to correct
• 44:32
Speaker 6: it because it's just, frankly, too much money at stake.
• 44:34
Speaker 4: I mean, when you.
• 44:35
Speaker 5: Have– Some of those conferences, though, they'll hang on, right?
• 44:38
Speaker 5: Like SEC, that's their identity. They will not let that go.
• 44:41
Speaker 6: Again, SEC's kind of done it right because they are regional.
• 44:44
Speaker 6: So it's not really outside of their region. So I
• 44:47
Speaker 6: think they'll have semblance of that. But it's like when
• 44:49
Speaker 6: you look at what happened to, like, USC this weekend,
• 44:52
Speaker 6: they're at the Rose Bowl, and they had, like, 5,000
• 44:55
Speaker 6: people there. Opening weekend at USC. 5,000 people at USC.
• 45:02
Speaker 6: I mean, if you watch the game, the stands were empty.
• 45:05
Speaker 6: They tried to say it was a quote-unquote sellout, but
• 45:08
Speaker 6: we all know that was a big old fib. So
• 45:10
Speaker 6: it's like you can't have that because now if you
• 45:12
Speaker 6: take a market like that where I'm not vested as
• 45:15
Speaker 6: a fan, you may not play UCLA or you may
• 45:19
Speaker 6: not play those teams within the region. That hurts everything.
• 45:23
Speaker 6: So I think it's going to get corrected. In my opinion.
• 45:26
Speaker 5: So the last question I have for you guys with
• 45:29
Speaker 5: our coaching theme tonight is, and Hollis, you better be
• 45:33
Speaker 5: careful how you answer this question. Who was the most
• 45:36
Speaker 5: challenging coach you played for and why?
• 45:39
Speaker 6: I mean, I would say probably, I would say my
• 45:43
Speaker 6: high school coach, he wasn't like the head coach, he
• 45:45
Speaker 6: was old man Edwards. So it was Steve Edwards Sr.
• 45:49
Speaker 6: But just because he was gruff. I mean, this was
• 45:53
Speaker 6: in the 90s and he was, like from the 70s.
• 45:56
Speaker 6: So you can imagine sort of how he would talk
• 46:00
Speaker 6: and phrase things to you.
• 46:02
Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
• 46:02
Speaker 6: So it was like one of those things where you
• 46:04
Speaker 6: had to really, really like be in control of your
• 46:07
Speaker 6: emotions because the way he would express himself to you,
• 46:10
Speaker 6: it was not nice. But it was ultimately good because
• 46:13
Speaker 6: you learned to take that criticism.
• 46:16
  Speaker 5: I hope he's not listening.
• 46:17
Speaker 4: No, he's since passed on.
• 46:19
  Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry.
• 46:20
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 46:20
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 46:21
Speaker 6: His son, Steve Edward Jr., is the current coach of GW.
• 46:24
Speaker 6: He was the head coach, and his dad was the
• 46:25
  Speaker 6: offensive coordinator.
• 46:26
Speaker 5: So it was his dad you played for.
• 46:27
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
• 46:27
Speaker 6: So his dad was the offensive coordinator. Steve Edward Jr.
• 46:30
Speaker 6: was the head coach at the time.
• 46:32
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 46:33
Speaker 6: He was just, I mean, he was gruff, but he
• 46:34
Speaker 6: was kind of one of those typical, stereotypical gruff on
• 46:39
Speaker 6: one hand, but, like, love you hard on the other hand.
• 46:41
Speaker 4: So it was like that. And to that, I can
• 46:46
Speaker 4: totally respect that because....
• 46:48
Speaker 3: Because the dad was back in the day when it was,
• 46:55
Speaker 3: you know, I mean, you could say anything. I mean, like,
• 46:58
Speaker 3: you know, anything could come out of your mouth as
• 47:01
Speaker 3: a coach talking to a player back in the day.
• 47:04
Speaker 3: The whole grabbing you by the face mask, all those
• 47:06
Speaker 3: kinds of things, those were norms.
• 47:12
Speaker 4: And so hearing the words that you would hear from
• 47:16
Speaker 4: a coach saying, The hands-on with the coach, them putting
• 47:22
Speaker 4: their hands on you, it was an acceptable thing.
• 47:24
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 47:25
Speaker 4: As a player, as a parent, you were okay with it.
• 47:28
  Speaker 5: As a technique?
• 47:29
Speaker 3: Yeah. It's just, it was, I'm trying to get Hollis
• 47:31
Speaker 3: to be the best player that he can be, so
• 47:34
Speaker 3: I need to get him as close to me when
• 47:36
Speaker 3: I'm talking to him.
• 47:37
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 47:38
Speaker 4: And telling him what he did wrong. And I think.
• 47:42
Speaker 3: Do I think that that was okay? I don't, but
• 47:47
Speaker 3: I will say this. I think it.
• 47:49
Speaker 4: Built some amazing, it built amazing men.
• 47:53
Speaker 5: It wouldn't fly today, that's for sure.
• 47:54
Speaker 3: No, it would not fly today, but I think it
• 47:56
Speaker 3: really had a lot to do with a lot of
• 47:59
  Speaker 3: young men.
• 48:01
Speaker 4: Becoming great men. I really do.
• 48:04
Speaker 3: I think when I look back at Sonny Randall and,
• 48:07
Speaker 3: you know, grabbing your face mask, cussing you out, all
• 48:10
Speaker 3: of those kinds of things, like, I can't even imagine
• 48:13
Speaker 3: myself even accepting that in my mind right now.
• 48:17
Speaker 4: Right, right. But if I had to do that all
• 48:20
Speaker 4: over again, I would absolutely do it.
• 48:23
Speaker 3: And I would take every cuss out, every grab face mask,
• 48:26
Speaker 3: every morning run because you didn't do something. I would
• 48:30
Speaker 3: take it all because it made me who I was,
• 48:33
Speaker 3: who I am. Right.
• 48:35
Speaker 5: Those coaches were the challenging ones are the ones that
• 48:38
Speaker 5: make you who you are.
• 48:40
Speaker 3: I definitely think so. I think that that's how you change.
• 48:43
Speaker 3: That's how you become the person that you are now.
• 48:48
Speaker 3: Not taking anything away from the coaches today and what
• 48:51
Speaker 3: they're trying to do because they're trying to do this
• 48:53
Speaker 3: exact same thing. I just don't know if some of
• 48:57
Speaker 3: the kids sometimes– if they don't have that pressure, they
• 49:02
Speaker 3: don't have that push, they don't have that hard-nosed coach,
• 49:08
Speaker 3: you just don't know, you know, the discipline, where it
• 49:12
  Speaker 3: may go.
• 49:12
Speaker 6: And I also think, like, from just a practical standpoint,
• 49:16
Speaker 6: I mean, obviously, like, if you got issues at home,
• 49:19
Speaker 6: that's complicated. kind of like a village raising a child, right?
• 49:23
Speaker 4: Takes a village. Yeah, you have that.
• 49:25
Speaker 6: Sort of manhood that is sort of, because I think
• 49:29
Speaker 6: what happens is, is that you learn how to take
• 49:31
Speaker 6: constructive criticism in a direct manner. Forget the cussing and
• 49:35
Speaker 6: the yelling, but you learn how to take the criticism directly. Like,
• 49:39
Speaker 6: you don't have to, like, somebody doesn't have to talk
• 49:41
Speaker 6: to you in third person or talk to you around
• 49:43
Speaker 6: the situation. You really learn how to take it. And
• 49:46
Speaker 6: I think, to me, unfortunately, that's kind of been a
• 49:49
Speaker 6: lost art because, you know, a lot of kids are
• 49:53
Speaker 6: emotional and they just can't take a direct criticism, whether
• 49:55
Speaker 6: it's yell, cuss, or not. And I think what's happened
• 49:58
Speaker 6: kind of has been inverted. I think women in sports
• 50:01
Speaker 6: now get that more than the boys.
• 50:03
  Speaker 5: You're right.
• 50:03
Speaker 6: I think women can take it a lot more because
• 50:05
Speaker 6: if you look at, like, you know, the past some
• 50:07
Speaker 6: of the Geno's and the Don Staley's and those coaches
• 50:10
Speaker 6: who we know now, those aren't, those are kind people,
• 50:13
Speaker 6: but they aren't nice people.
• 50:14
  Speaker 5: They're not touchy-feely.
• 50:14
  Speaker 4: They aren't touchy-feely.
• 50:15
Speaker 6: So, you know, a lot of women, women athletes are
• 50:18
Speaker 6: getting that. And I think that's, you know, so I
• 50:20
Speaker 6: think it's important that we, you know, we got to
• 50:22
Speaker 6: figure out a way back to that.
• 50:25
Speaker 3: Do you think we can, do you think we can
• 50:26
Speaker 3: get back? Do you think there's a way back? that
• 50:29
Speaker 3: you can get to a parent or parents or a
• 50:32
  Speaker 3: community that.
• 50:33
Speaker 6: Not in this culture, unfortunately. I mean, I've seen like
• 50:37
Speaker 6: several incidents where coaches and parents fighting. I don't know
• 50:40
Speaker 6: if you've seen some of those things on social media
• 50:42
Speaker 6: this weekend. This happened this weekend. So I think it's
• 50:45
Speaker 6: going to be hard to get back to that, you know,
• 50:47
  Speaker 6: with the culture.
• 50:49
Speaker 4: And I see it in you sports, you know.
• 50:52
Speaker 3: If I get on, not me necessarily, but a coach
• 50:54
Speaker 3: gets on one of the kids, parents are not.
• 50:57
  Speaker 4: They're touchy.
• 50:58
Speaker 6: They're really, yeah, they're really like. And I think the
• 51:01
Speaker 6: thing is our parents dropped us off. Like our parents
• 51:03
  Speaker 6: didn't stay.
• 51:04
Speaker 4: No, no. They got dropped. Like we got dropped off
• 51:06
Speaker 4: and we got maybe picked up.
• 51:08
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 51:08
Speaker 4: Maybe he walked off. You could come home and tell
• 51:11
Speaker 4: what happened in practice.
• 51:12
Speaker 5: Right home with your buddy. Yeah.
• 51:13
Speaker 4: And they ain't want to hear that. No. What did you,
• 51:16
Speaker 4: my dad's first question is, what did you do? Yeah.
• 51:20
Speaker 4: For sure. That was the famous question.
• 51:23
Speaker 3: And I just– I really do believe that we need
• 51:25
Speaker 3: to get back to that because I think that's the
• 51:29
Speaker 3: way– that's coaching. And not– I don't mean all the
• 51:33
Speaker 3: cussing and all that kind of stuff, but you got
• 51:35
Speaker 3: to be able to be hard because you are the parent.
• 51:38
Speaker 3: You know, in that situation, you are the parent. But
• 51:42
Speaker 3: anything else, anybody, before we get out of here?
• 51:45
Speaker 5: I think we'll have to touch on the NFL next show.
• 51:49
Speaker 4: Well, just quickly, I mean, you got Aaron Donald. He
• 51:52
Speaker 4: came out of retirement. Right?
• 51:54
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 51:54
Speaker 6: He came out of retirement. He's with Miles Garrett on
• 51:57
Speaker 6: the defensive line and the Rams.
• 51:59
Speaker 4: I don't know. They might go undefeated. I might be
• 52:01
Speaker 4: shaking in my boots. Like, are you kidding me?
• 52:05
  Speaker 2: Scary.
• 52:06
Speaker 4: Are you kidding me?
• 52:06
  Speaker 5: They're scary.
• 52:07
  Speaker 2: Scary.
• 52:07
Speaker 6: And then, you know, your Browns, they kept all four quarterbacks.
• 52:12
Speaker 6: They literally kept all four quarterbacks on the active roster.
• 52:15
  Speaker 5: Keep on browning.
• 52:16
Speaker 3: So let me just touch on that one. So if
• 52:20
Speaker 3: I'm four, Well, I might be getting a paycheck. But
• 52:26
Speaker 3: the paycheck only lasts for a while because sooner or
• 52:29
Speaker 3: later you actually do.
• 52:30
Speaker 4: Want to play. I don't know.
• 52:32
Speaker 3: Maybe you don't. Well, I shouldn't say that for today's game.
• 52:35
Speaker 3: I shouldn't say that for today's game. But there's no way.
• 52:38
Speaker 3: I'm going to be third, and we got four corners,
• 52:42
Speaker 3: and I'm third, and I'm not getting a shot in
• 52:44
  Speaker 3: the game.
• 52:44
Speaker 4: That's like having eight corners.
• 52:45
Speaker 2: I mean– That might apply for all the other teams
• 52:49
Speaker 2: in the NFL, but this is Cleveland.
• 52:51
Speaker 4: Just a friendly reminder. Number four is not bad in Cleveland.
• 52:57
Speaker 4: You got a chance to play. You got a chance.
• 52:59
Speaker 4: You got a chance. You're right about that.
• 53:01
  Speaker 5: So you're saying there's a chance.
• 53:02
Speaker 4: That is the fact. By week six, you're in, buddy.
• 53:05
Speaker 6: And if I'm like the DB coach or I'm the
• 53:08
Speaker 6: linebacker coach, I'm like, dang, I could have had maybe
• 53:10
  Speaker 6: another spot.
• 53:10
Speaker 4: Exactly. You just going to keep off for these guys?
• 53:13
Speaker 3: There's no way. Because somebody took a hit. Some positions
• 53:18
  Speaker 3: took a hit.
• 53:20
Speaker 5: And the Dolphins better be worried. I'm telling you what.
• 53:22
Speaker 5: The Rams are scary loaded, and they might go undefeated.
• 53:27
Speaker 5: I am telling you right now. Look at their schedule.
• 53:29
Speaker 5: Look at what's on their team. That roster is putting
• 53:34
Speaker 5: everybody on notice. I'm telling you.
• 53:36
Speaker 4: I never want a team to go undefeated.
• 53:38
Speaker 5: I don't either. I'm just saying the Dolphins better watch.
• 53:40
Speaker 6: I just don't know how you're going to, like, because
