- 0:08Speaker 2: The world's a biget.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Podcas Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:19Speaker 4: So Max is by all of us and starts to
- 0:21Speaker 4: kind of like he's about to shift his weight walk away.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Sees Evan.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Oh, Evan, what's up, brother?
- 0:25Speaker 4: How you doing. Evan's like, I'm great, how are you.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Maco's just itching to get back out their babe.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I think Evan was just dropping word he said to me.
- 0:36Speaker 4: He was like, you know, ready to go, and uh,
- 0:39Speaker 4: let's ride. I think was the other thing, and that
- 0:40Speaker 4: He's like, wait a.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Second, that's again was over in the first quarter.
- 0:43Speaker 4: My god, first play I couldn't believe it. I mean
- 0:46Speaker 4: it was like bang bang bang. You know, if the
- 0:47Speaker 4: Patriots were to not make the playoffs this year that
- 0:49Speaker 4: they could be forced candidates for Hard I mean, how
- 0:52Speaker 4: much would Bill Belichick's that would be the resigned He
- 0:56Speaker 4: was just.
- 0:57Speaker 5: Look like the whole Hard Knocks would be like three angles,
- 1:01Speaker 5: warm up and stretch.
- 1:03Speaker 3: It would turn into like the Boid the Dog Show. Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 3: now it.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Is getting to put up time.
- 1:11Speaker 6: I'm not doing it up.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I'm not doing it. You know, the crafts like Ledsoe
- 1:15Speaker 3: was considered like the fifth son.
- 1:16Speaker 4: You know, there's such a great guy too. I mean
- 1:18Speaker 4: it's like the football is one thing, but just even
- 1:20Speaker 4: the guy that he was and is. You say, two
- 1:22Speaker 4: games in the early nineties and then all of a
- 1:23Speaker 4: sudden you have this tall quarterback throwing bombs all over
- 1:26Speaker 4: the place, shows up and beats the marine out.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Like this is Patriot's Unfiltered.
- 1:32Speaker 3: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here
- 1:36Speaker 3: at j Let's Stadium. It's Deuce, it's Tamara, it's Paul,
- 1:39Speaker 3: it's me, it's Matt Nabooth. Evan's not here, but he
- 1:42Speaker 3: has issued a statement on DeAndre Hopkins. We'll read that later.
- 1:46Speaker 3: We'll read it later, we'll save that. But Evan has
- 1:49Speaker 3: issued a statement that he wanted us to read.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Well, it did say for immediate release.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So for immediate Rea, I'll decide what immediate is.
- 1:58Speaker 6: I just didn't want anybody to think that I show
- 2:00Speaker 6: my immediate Yeah, because Evan is on vacation. I didn't
- 2:03Speaker 6: want to deprive any of the listeners. I mean, what
- 2:05Speaker 6: his thoughts in the patients.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But probably need a good ten minutes though it's about
- 2:09Speaker 4: four pages long. So is it really a film breakdown?
- 2:12Speaker 4: You know what could have been a lot of a
- 2:13Speaker 4: lot of angles.
- 2:14Speaker 6: So we'll get to that shortly.
- 2:16Speaker 3: So we'll get to Evan's statement later. But yeah, the
- 2:19Speaker 3: big news that broke over the weekend were was that
- 2:22Speaker 3: the Titans is signing DeAndre Hopkins, and things of things evolved,
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, as far as stories about what the deal
- 2:31Speaker 3: actually is, whatever it is, thirteen sixteen incentives, no one sent.
- 2:37Speaker 3: The Patriots should have done it, you know, in my opinion,
- 2:40Speaker 3: they should have been the ones to sign DeAndre Hopkins.
- 2:42Speaker 3: But the bigger to me the story that came out
- 2:46Speaker 3: after If it's true, And I'm going to turn to
- 2:48Speaker 3: Paul because you know he's tuned.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Into his I don't know what his story is. I'm
- 2:52Speaker 6: very much that's the offer that.
- 2:53Speaker 3: The Patriots had was four million.
- 2:56Speaker 6: I I haven't heard anything.
- 2:57Speaker 4: I just read that Albert Beer Alberber reported the Patriots
- 3:00Speaker 4: were willing to go up to fifteen like Tennessee was,
- 3:02Speaker 4: but it was all it was all incentive.
- 3:05Speaker 3: My guess is okay, Yeah, I have not seen a
- 3:07Speaker 3: million Patriots weren't really interesting.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I have not seen that, and also I have
- 3:12Speaker 6: not seen anybody report that they're one.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Of your guys mentioned it yesterday.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Yeah, because if I did, I did listen to Mike yesterday.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Because even if even if it was four million plus incentives,
- 3:23Speaker 3: that means the Patriots weren't interesting.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Well, that's not enough.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think it was that. But my guess
- 3:28Speaker 6: is that, you know, and this is one of the
- 3:31Speaker 6: things that my shows often tease and criticized the Patriots
- 3:36Speaker 6: for the quote unquote Patriots guarantees, right they were talking
- 3:40Speaker 6: about with like Devanta Parker, you know, fourteen million guaranteed,
- 3:44Speaker 6: and then there's like three and a half of those
- 3:46Speaker 6: million are tied to roster bonuses, game game day roster bones.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Then that's not guaranteed, right, right, right. So that's my
- 3:55Speaker 6: guess is the Patriots probably had a reasonably competitive offer
- 3:59Speaker 6: from the one that Tennessee had, But the Tennessee one
- 4:01Speaker 6: was actual money and this one was stuff that he
- 4:04Speaker 6: could earn, right I do, That would be my guest.
- 4:06Speaker 6: I don't have the information.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I do wonder if it if it kind of the
- 4:09Speaker 5: door was kind of closed once they did free signed
- 4:11Speaker 5: DeVante Parker, like I'm wondering, like if it just took
- 4:14Speaker 5: a while for.
- 4:14Speaker 4: It to come out, you know, if they knew at
- 4:16Speaker 4: that point.
- 4:16Speaker 2: They knew it, Yeah, if they knew at that point
- 4:18Speaker 2: that like, okay, those.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Big thing is that he they shouldn't let him getut
- 4:21Speaker 4: of the bilding yet of the building.
- 4:22Speaker 6: I kind of closed the door mentally that weekend, and I.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Like generally or just on this, on this, just like just.
- 4:30Speaker 6: On you what I what I when he didn't sign,
- 4:35Speaker 6: Because when he had the meeting, I was, like everybody
- 4:38Speaker 6: else reading Twitter, I was like, this sounds like it's imminent.
- 4:41Speaker 6: He's signing any second now. You know, Matthew Judon is
- 4:44Speaker 6: taking pictures with him in the locker room. You know.
- 4:47Speaker 6: It sounded like by by the end of that I
- 4:49Speaker 6: think it was a Thursday night, if I'm not mistaken,
- 4:51Speaker 6: I felt like coming to work on Friday morning, I
- 4:54Speaker 6: was going I was going to wake up and find
- 4:56Speaker 6: out that the Patriots had signed Hopkins when he did,
- 5:00Speaker 6: and I believe later in that day is when and
- 5:03Speaker 6: I keep going back to reference this comment that Adam
- 5:06Speaker 6: Schefter made on ESPN, That's when I closed the door
- 5:10Speaker 6: on him coming here. When he made the comment about
- 5:13Speaker 6: keep in mind that Juju Smith Schuster is set to
- 5:16Speaker 6: earn nine million, nine plus million this year. I think
- 5:18Speaker 6: it's actually ten. And that's the highest paid receiver on
- 5:23Speaker 6: the Patriots roster, right And the clear inference to me
- 5:25Speaker 6: was and no one will go higher than that, right
- 5:28Speaker 6: to which I said, that ain't gonna get it.
- 5:30Speaker 3: That ain't going to get it done now. And it
- 5:32Speaker 3: goes back to the whole pecking order. You know, you
- 5:35Speaker 3: mentioned Parker being resigned. I think the minute like it
- 5:41Speaker 3: got serious with Hopkins and he's I think Belichick started
- 5:44Speaker 3: hearing from agents, you know, Parker's agent, Schuster's agents, say hey,
- 5:49Speaker 3: what's going on here? You know? And I think you
- 5:52Speaker 3: know Belichick, you know, gave those guys their deals, and
- 5:57Speaker 3: I think the whole pecking order was in four in. Yeah,
- 6:02Speaker 3: it's it's arbitrary. The Patriots don't have to adhere to that.
- 6:06Speaker 3: You know, you signed Hopkins, and you know you tell
- 6:10Speaker 3: Parker and Shuster deal with it. He's I mean, he
- 6:13Speaker 3: he's better than it might.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Be better for them. I mean they might you know,
- 6:16Speaker 4: you can pitch it to that.
- 6:17Speaker 6: The better player now, right, Hopkins, I mean, by any
- 6:20Speaker 6: objective measure. Would anybody said that Hopkins Parker.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it was timing too. I mean you can go
- 6:27Speaker 3: back to Parker and say, Okay, when we signed you,
- 6:31Speaker 3: you made a lot of money, and if you were
- 6:33Speaker 3: the guy that was available right now, maybe you'd be
- 6:35Speaker 3: making more than we start. But this is the business
- 6:38Speaker 3: we're in.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Well, I even looked at it with with Smith Schuster.
- 6:42Speaker 6: He was a free agent Parker, they traded for it.
- 6:44Speaker 6: He already had a contract. Smith Schuster was open for
- 6:47Speaker 6: anybody at the start of free agency, and he got
- 6:51Speaker 6: I think his average annual value was about eight and
- 6:53Speaker 6: a half million. And if you just want to go
- 6:56Speaker 6: by aav Hopkins got thirteen while being coming free in June,
- 7:01Speaker 6: the end of my day, when all the free agent
- 7:03Speaker 6: dollars are all gone. So if both Hopkins and smith
- 7:09Speaker 6: Schuster were true unrestricted free agents on March fourteenth or
- 7:12Speaker 6: whatever the first day was, somebody would have given Hopkins
- 7:16Speaker 6: a very significant contract, more so than when he went
- 7:18Speaker 6: from Tennis, and.
- 7:19Speaker 3: More than Shuster.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Oh, he already got more than Shuster.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah no, but I'm saying everything being equal, teams can
- 7:26Speaker 3: pick for either one. They're gonna pick Hopkins.
- 7:29Speaker 6: Yeah, he would have gotten a huge contract open.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So you know, I don't get it, Like whether it's
- 7:36Speaker 3: thirteen or sixteen with incentives, I think it was in
- 7:39Speaker 3: the ballpark. Patriots could afford it. You know, So what
- 7:44Speaker 3: does that say? What are we saying? Here? Are we
- 7:46Speaker 3: saying that we're good with what we've got?
- 7:49Speaker 2: I feel like that they were saying we're good with
- 7:50Speaker 2: what we got.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I mean, even starting with you know, keeping Parker for
- 7:54Speaker 5: an extend amount of time. I think that they look
- 7:56Speaker 5: at you know, we've added Bob, We've added these pieces
- 8:01Speaker 5: like let's see what we have with this and not yeah,
- 8:05Speaker 5: overwhelmed my offense with more time because I'm like, I
- 8:09Speaker 5: do think they could have gotten Hopkins, And to your point,
- 8:11Speaker 5: I think that could have helped Juju and Parker.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Because now, like if somebody I'm gonna steal what somebody
- 8:18Speaker 3: was saying, but we've said it on this show before.
- 8:20Speaker 3: If your best corner is now on Hopkins.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that means the other two free, not free.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But with lesser coverage.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, so I don't know, but I'll go
- 8:32Speaker 3: back to what I said before. I'm on record saying
- 8:33Speaker 3: I think this cast of characters. And this is before
- 8:37Speaker 3: Koseki has underperformed for a number of reasons, health, coaching,
- 8:43Speaker 3: game plan, and maybe now they realize that and they say, Okay,
- 8:48Speaker 3: they're gonna be better because they're gonna you know, hopefully
- 8:52Speaker 3: health You can't you can't control that. But with better coaching,
- 8:56Speaker 3: better scheme, we're going to be a better offensive team
- 8:59Speaker 3: and they're gonna play better than they were. And maybe
- 9:01Speaker 3: that's the mindset going into this.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I mean, that's what you're hoping for. I mean, there's
- 9:05Speaker 4: and you know, there's just there's a lot of angles
- 9:07Speaker 4: to this, and I mean, one thing that's really just
- 9:09Speaker 4: bugged me is people like really making it about the money,
- 9:12Speaker 4: and like I get that it is like they could
- 9:13Speaker 4: have stretched a little bit more and maybe gotten him,
- 9:15Speaker 4: But for me, it's about the personnel. And that's you know,
- 9:18Speaker 4: the decisions that they made in the draft that they
- 9:20Speaker 4: you know, they spent a bunch of money two years ago.
- 9:22Speaker 4: What was I don't even remember what the number one
- 9:23Speaker 4: hundred and sixty million guaranteed something crazy.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Right like that.
- 9:26Speaker 4: So you know, it's just like I just feel like
- 9:28Speaker 4: you get off target, Like you're getting off target, Like
- 9:31Speaker 4: they don't have the players right, they don't, and then
- 9:34Speaker 4: that's you know, and it's just you react of course too,
- 9:36Speaker 4: especially when you're in the mail bag. You get all
- 9:38Speaker 4: these emails and you get all these tweets of one
- 9:40Speaker 4: are those cheap Patriots so they can buy a stadium
- 9:43Speaker 4: that you know like And that's all you hear.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It's separate And that's the that I know that was
- 9:47Speaker 3: on one of your shows too. Oh now we know
- 9:49Speaker 3: where they're spending all their money on it. You know,
- 9:52Speaker 3: it's front of me for everything. You know, I can
- 9:55Speaker 3: tell you right now that that money is separate, you know.
- 9:58Speaker 4: But I also just look, I wanted Parker. I wanted sorry,
- 10:02Speaker 4: I wanted Hopkins. I thought, you know, they need him.
- 10:04Speaker 4: And even just from a from a depth standpoint, I
- 10:06Speaker 4: mean they have. We talked about it on Tuesday. They
- 10:08Speaker 4: have three receivers who have done something in this league,
- 10:11Speaker 4: one guy that we're hoping can do something in the
- 10:13Speaker 4: second year in Thwornton, and then you got like six
- 10:15Speaker 4: guys that haven't caught an NFL pass. So your depth
- 10:18Speaker 4: there is already razor thin to start the season. So
- 10:22Speaker 4: you know it's I don't know how they're gonna make
- 10:23Speaker 4: it through the season, how they're gonna you know, elevate
- 10:25Speaker 4: especially you can bring in the injury issues of Parker
- 10:28Speaker 4: and of Thornton that we've seen. So how quick is
- 10:32Speaker 4: it before you're saying, all right, we got to go
- 10:33Speaker 4: into this game with Trainix and on a promotion, you know, like, like,
- 10:36Speaker 4: is that what we're looking at? So just from that,
- 10:39Speaker 4: regard it, because is anyone going to call in today
- 10:41Speaker 4: and say that if they signed Hopkins that the Patriots
- 10:43Speaker 4: were the favorites in the AFC. He's like, maybe then
- 10:46Speaker 4: you felt like we got a punchers chance maybe against
- 10:48Speaker 4: some of these better offenses, but you still didn't feel
- 10:51Speaker 4: like they were in the conversation then of contenders. So
- 10:55Speaker 4: part of me, though, is just resigned because this is
- 10:57Speaker 4: how they've kind of always done business. I thought a
- 10:59Speaker 4: lot about the Deion branding in two thousand and six
- 11:01Speaker 4: where I'm not a totally saying situation, but a similar
- 11:04Speaker 4: one where a player you kind of need if you
- 11:06Speaker 4: maybe just yeah, let's bend over a little bit and
- 11:09Speaker 4: let him have a little bit extra that you know
- 11:11Speaker 4: it would have paid off for the team. And I
- 11:13Speaker 4: just wonder if they're in that same situation where we're
- 11:15Speaker 4: gonna get to week five, six seven, DeVante Parker's heard
- 11:19Speaker 4: Thornton's banged up, and you're saying, man, all right, it's
- 11:21Speaker 4: gonna be all the tight ends today, and it's already
- 11:23Speaker 4: seems like that's what's gonna happen to me.
- 11:26Speaker 5: And then I'm also like Hopkins would have helped see
- 11:29Speaker 5: like where mac Jones really is too in terms of
- 11:32Speaker 5: like last year's kind of like a bust year for him,
- 11:33Speaker 5: and you really didn't have much production from him. So
- 11:36Speaker 5: now I'm wondering, like, Okay, if you had Hopkins, you
- 11:38Speaker 5: could really see like, Okay, can we win with mac Jones?
- 11:41Speaker 2: Are we gonna keep him after his WORKID contract is over?
- 11:44Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:44Speaker 4: And I know, And then we got a lot of
- 11:45Speaker 4: those questions too, and like I just like I think
- 11:47Speaker 4: it's a good conversation to have because it's like, are
- 11:49Speaker 4: you are people telling me that? Because it's the I mean,
- 11:52Speaker 4: I look, I think this is better than two thousand
- 11:54Speaker 4: and one's weapons were. I don't think it's great, but
- 11:56Speaker 4: I still think that mac Jones has to play well.
- 11:58Speaker 4: He can't just well he gets a free because we didn't,
- 12:01Speaker 4: you know, we didn't give him a thirty one year
- 12:02Speaker 4: old old receiver, like he still has to show something
- 12:05Speaker 4: like and I agree, you want to try to put
- 12:07Speaker 4: everything around him that you possibly can and feel like
- 12:09Speaker 4: the player feels like you're giving him the best possible chance,
- 12:12Speaker 4: and you know it's not a great like. You know,
- 12:14Speaker 4: look when you know people are like, well, you got
- 12:15Speaker 4: all this cap space, and you know, it's hard to say, well,
- 12:18Speaker 4: they're right. You know, it's not like even the people
- 12:20Speaker 4: who usually use the cap as an excuse can't be like,
- 12:22Speaker 4: they only got five million in space and they need
- 12:24Speaker 4: operating expensa so they can't do it. You know, it's
- 12:26Speaker 4: that doesn't even hold water right now. So it's disappointing.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I wanted to see him in camp. I think it
- 12:31Speaker 4: would have thought it would have given the team a
- 12:32Speaker 4: boost that it needs, not only on the field, but
- 12:35Speaker 4: you know, in the stands as well. And now it's
- 12:38Speaker 4: you know, I don't want to get into a whole thing,
- 12:40Speaker 4: but you know, it's kind of getting into like Game
- 12:42Speaker 4: of Thrones, and I felt like, you know, people who
- 12:44Speaker 4: watch Game of Thrones, no, well know, someone don't, sorry, Paul,
- 12:48Speaker 4: you know, but I kind of feel like we're watching
- 12:50Speaker 4: it's the Mad Kings Last Stand.
- 12:52Speaker 3: That's what it is.
- 12:52Speaker 4: It's the Mad Kings Last stand. And you have this,
- 12:54Speaker 4: you know, powerful figure who's always kind of done it
- 12:57Speaker 4: his way, and things aren't going great around him. Things
- 12:59Speaker 4: are falling apart around him, and now it's really the
- 13:02Speaker 4: question of does he have one last fastball in the
- 13:05Speaker 4: bag or is it just going to kind of continue
- 13:07Speaker 4: to go down this path.
- 13:08Speaker 6: So that's kind of where I land on this. And
- 13:11Speaker 6: I want to be pretty clear because I think up front,
- 13:14Speaker 6: when we've been talking about Hopkins all along, both Mike
- 13:18Speaker 6: and Evan have been much high. I've agreed I wanted Hopkins,
- 13:22Speaker 6: but they've been much higher on the Hopkins acquisition and
- 13:26Speaker 6: what it might mean than I have been. I still
- 13:29Speaker 6: feel like they would be kind of pedestrian offensively, but
- 13:32Speaker 6: I think that they needed him and he would have
- 13:35Speaker 6: clearly been the number one guy for all the reasons
- 13:37Speaker 6: that Tamara and Fred said about have another guy slot
- 13:41Speaker 6: into their right spots. Blah blah blah. I agree. So
- 13:44Speaker 6: I'm not devastated for the twenty twenty three fortunes of
- 13:48Speaker 6: the team. I'm not going to pretend now that they
- 13:50Speaker 6: didn't sign up. Oh, it's a huge like that, But
- 13:52Speaker 6: I just look at what the statement says more so,
- 13:55Speaker 6: and that's the stuff that worries me. And I think
- 13:58Speaker 6: you bring up a great point, Mike, with Dion Branch,
- 14:01Speaker 6: that's the way this is very consistent to the way
- 14:05Speaker 6: he's always operated, but the league doesn't operate that way anymore.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Receivers are now very important players. I know he never
- 14:12Speaker 6: thought that, but the facts are what they are now,
- 14:17Speaker 6: Like these number one these number one guys are impacting
- 14:20Speaker 6: teams greatly.
- 14:21Speaker 3: The the the tag number for receivers is now around
- 14:26Speaker 3: twenty million dollars.
- 14:27Speaker 6: The offenses are driving Super Bowl team.
- 14:30Speaker 3: The tag number for running backs and it came up
- 14:33Speaker 3: because Sequon Barkley won't sign. There has actually gone down
- 14:38Speaker 3: in this league. Nothing goes down in life, no, you know,
- 14:42Speaker 3: But in the NFL, the tag number for running backs
- 14:45Speaker 3: has gone down. And that tells you everything you need
- 14:48Speaker 3: to know.
- 14:48Speaker 6: And I don't know for a fact that Adam Schefter
- 14:51Speaker 6: is right when he talks about that number that Juju
- 14:53Speaker 6: had and couldn't go over that, but that, to me
- 14:56Speaker 6: is in line with his philosophy. Within the structure of
- 14:58Speaker 6: the locker room. You might be write Fred when they
- 15:01Speaker 6: started kicking the tires on Hopkins.
- 15:03Speaker 3: We know Parker was kind of a little bit prickly
- 15:05Speaker 3: that day.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Yeah, when we were asking about everybody was asking all
- 15:08Speaker 6: the players. He didn't want about Conker and they were
- 15:10Speaker 6: all great. He didn't want to hear about it.
- 15:13Speaker 3: And guess who we just heard from just the other day, yesterday,
- 15:19Speaker 3: Double J Doubles. Yeah, did you think I'm going to
- 15:23Speaker 3: be ready to go on day one of camp?
- 15:24Speaker 6: I want to get to that in a second. Did
- 15:26Speaker 6: you happen to read that story?
- 15:28Speaker 3: I didn't read the story.
- 15:29Speaker 4: No, I just saw that that.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Okay, So.
- 15:32Speaker 6: I'll get to that just because you just brought it up.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Nicole Yang in the Boston Globe had a byeline with
- 15:39Speaker 6: a dateline of Long Beach, California. I'm not sure if
- 15:42Speaker 6: she just was out there or whatever, and had a
- 15:46Speaker 6: quote from Juju Smith Schuster which was like just talking.
- 15:50Speaker 6: It was one small sentence about feeling better about the
- 15:55Speaker 6: tempo of the offense. He thought it started a little slow,
- 15:58Speaker 6: feeling better about it as we've gone along, and is excited.
- 16:02Speaker 6: That was it. Like I just thought, where did this
- 16:04Speaker 6: story emanate? Like how did this all come about?
- 16:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:07Speaker 6: I just thought it was very odd and he and
- 16:09Speaker 6: he like it wasn't in a quote, but she said
- 16:12Speaker 6: that he said he he will be ready to go
- 16:15Speaker 6: and he was coming here yesterday.
- 16:17Speaker 4: On day one.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Well is that which? Okay?
- 16:19Speaker 4: Is that is that that journalism to like, No, like
- 16:22Speaker 4: the most interesting piece of it, you don't put in
- 16:24Speaker 4: the piece and you just kind of.
- 16:25Speaker 6: It was it was all no, it was like in
- 16:27Speaker 6: the second or third paragraph she said that Smith smith
- 16:30Speaker 6: Schuster indicated that he will be ready to go at
- 16:33Speaker 6: the start of training camp, that that was the news.
- 16:35Speaker 6: I'm just wondering, like she didn't go to California to
- 16:38Speaker 6: talk to Juju Smith Schuster. I don't think it might
- 16:41Speaker 6: have been a situation where she was out there on
- 16:43Speaker 6: out there on any vacation, visiting family and anything.
- 16:46Speaker 4: And so the guy there has given us an update
- 16:49Speaker 4: on how it how it all went, you know what
- 16:51Speaker 4: I mean, like a little odd, yeah, little odd first
- 16:54Speaker 4: year here, but it doesn't really but it.
- 16:57Speaker 3: To me, it's like, Okay, the whole Hopkins thing is
- 17:00Speaker 3: gone now I don't have to worry about that. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 3: I'm gonna be ready.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I'm your guy, and and and he has to be
- 17:07Speaker 4: like I mean, Smith.
- 17:11Speaker 6: How could you possibly feel good about And I'm not
- 17:14Speaker 6: talking about this isn't the talent issue, because I don't
- 17:16Speaker 6: think the talent is that bad. I've said this, I've
- 17:19Speaker 6: been very consistent. They have receivers that are NFL players.
- 17:23Speaker 6: They they have three guys that anybody would like to
- 17:27Speaker 6: have like on their Yeah, wide receive a depth chart
- 17:31Speaker 6: with Parker, Smith Schuster and Born right. You know, I
- 17:34Speaker 6: don't know what Thornton is yet, but there's teams that
- 17:37Speaker 6: don't have four guys like that. The problem is they
- 17:42Speaker 6: all come with huge question marks and the durability problems
- 17:47Speaker 6: with Thornton, Parker especially, but Smith Schuster as well. To
- 17:52Speaker 6: Mike's point, if what if Parker plays eleven games, Thornton
- 17:58Speaker 6: plays you know, nine, and you know smith Schuster plays ten,
- 18:03Speaker 6: Like just what do you.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Hope they don't overlap? What are you gonna do? What
- 18:06Speaker 3: you need them all though? I know, but like every
- 18:09Speaker 3: team's receivers miss games, right, you know, but they all do,
- 18:14Speaker 3: but you just hope it does. It's not epidemic, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 3: it doesn't, you know.
- 18:18Speaker 4: And but I think the thing that's hard is like
- 18:20Speaker 4: they're so specific too, you know, like like it's and
- 18:22Speaker 4: it's almost like Parker, you could lose them and I
- 18:24Speaker 4: don't know if it would really matter, but if you
- 18:26Speaker 4: lost somebody else and you just had to rely on Parker, Like,
- 18:29Speaker 4: it just feels like when you.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Start losing multiple people out of the room that then
- 18:33Speaker 3: you have problems. You know you're gonna lose a guy.
- 18:37Speaker 3: None of them will probably play seventeen games.
- 18:40Speaker 6: You know, seventeen is not the same as I don't
- 18:43Speaker 6: I know, like Parker never plays more than ten or
- 18:46Speaker 6: eleven games in a season. Yeah, Like, and that's also like, yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 6: you're right, Fred, everybody, every team will lose your receiver.
- 18:52Speaker 6: But these guys have an injury have history. And the
- 18:56Speaker 6: one guy who really doesn't have an injury history might
- 18:58Speaker 6: be the loosest of all Canons and Born.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Yeah, he looks like he's working out really hard though. Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 4: I know my Twitter follow I mean not TRMP Brown hard,
- 19:07Speaker 4: because TRMP Brown he has.
- 19:09Speaker 5: I also like, it was two days ago Kendrick Bourne
- 19:12Speaker 5: posted a picture of his iPad studying the offense and
- 19:15Speaker 5: I was, I literally screenshoted.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I'm like, why this is why you get in trouble?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Like I don't need to see you.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Oh, you could see stuff.
- 19:23Speaker 5: It was just the cover, but it was like the
- 19:25Speaker 5: cover and it yeah, and it was like installation number one.
- 19:29Speaker 5: I'm like, why are you posting this?
- 19:31Speaker 4: I know, no, it's always and I mean, I'm sure
- 19:34Speaker 4: it's going to happen next week when we get out
- 19:35Speaker 4: there and he's going to start talking. You're like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 19:38Speaker 4: no breaks, breaks, breaks, no, don't talk about this. But
- 19:41Speaker 4: I mean talk about a guy though that I feel
- 19:43Speaker 4: like has a huge opportunity because I do think that
- 19:45Speaker 4: he has a little bit of versatility to you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: play inside, play outside, you know, play out of the
- 19:50Speaker 4: backfield a little bit, use him in motion and stuff.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I think that he has some potential. I just I
- 19:54Speaker 4: think that, you know, him and Juju are just huge
- 19:57Speaker 4: pieces of this offense. And you know, if you can
- 19:59Speaker 4: get a seventeen game season just out of those two, like,
- 20:01Speaker 4: I think you can overcome it if Parker misses a
- 20:03Speaker 4: couple of games, and you know, I almost think it
- 20:05Speaker 4: with him and Thornton, you could almost look at them
- 20:07Speaker 4: as Look, as long as you have one of those guys,
- 20:08Speaker 4: you're gonna have somebody outside who gives you at least
- 20:10Speaker 4: a presence and you can work around it, but I
- 20:13Speaker 4: just it's even more for me. I know people are
- 20:15Speaker 4: gonna be like, they don't have the number one, they
- 20:17Speaker 4: don't have the number one, and you know, and we're
- 20:18Speaker 4: gonna get to the season. I'm like, that's not the problem.
- 20:20Speaker 4: The problems that they have no depth and they are
- 20:22Speaker 4: one injury away from having to play a game left handed,
- 20:25Speaker 4: and we're not even in the training camp.
- 20:27Speaker 6: If you could tell me that I'm going to have
- 20:30Speaker 6: for the majority of the time, not telling you seventeen games,
- 20:34Speaker 6: but if I have both of those tight ends and
- 20:37Speaker 6: three of those receivers and Stevenson the Ville, I think
- 20:39Speaker 6: they'll be okay. Offensively, okay, I think they'll be okay.
- 20:43Speaker 6: That's a lot of ifs. And you know, like the
- 20:46Speaker 6: old adages on my show is Freddy, the more riffs
- 20:48Speaker 6: you have, sure more losses you're probably gonna have.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Yeah, if anyone you know on the report that I
- 20:54Speaker 3: was mentioning four million plus incentives, if anyone knows of
- 20:57Speaker 3: a credible source that had that play, he send it
- 21:00Speaker 3: to the to the show.
- 21:01Speaker 5: I think, and I get to term whether or not
- 21:03Speaker 5: it's I think in the meantime, though, I would love
- 21:06Speaker 5: to hear the official statement of we've all expressed, we've
- 21:11Speaker 5: all expressed.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Okay, so let's know this is important because a lot
- 21:17Speaker 3: of people are They need to know what Evan feels,
- 21:19Speaker 3: so go ahead.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Alright, So official statement from Evans.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Just not going to be ready.
- 21:26Speaker 4: I'm not going to try to do an VS person
- 21:28Speaker 4: for immediate release on Tuesday's pew sadness, anger frustration. I
- 21:33Speaker 4: could have justified losing a quote unquote ring chasing Hawkins
- 21:36Speaker 4: to Buffalo, Kansas City, but to lose out on him
- 21:39Speaker 4: because their offer reportedly wasn't in the same ballpark as Tennessee.
- 21:41Speaker 4: It's inexcusable and another sign that the Patriots don't want
- 21:44Speaker 4: to pay market value for elite skilled players, an antiquated
- 21:47Speaker 4: view of what wins football games. Good luck to Mac
- 21:50Speaker 4: Jones and Bill O'Brien. Patriots fans deserve better. Thank you
- 21:54Speaker 4: for privacy at this difficult time.
- 21:59Speaker 6: We touch on the one factor that I think I'm
- 22:03Speaker 6: most concerned with. Like, I'll tell you I dislike the
- 22:07Speaker 6: Parker extension more than not signing Hopkins.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 22:11Speaker 6: Like, let's let's continue to take that, you know, as
- 22:15Speaker 6: Tony likes to say, all the time on my show.
- 22:18Speaker 6: You know, let's you know, let's continue to take the
- 22:20Speaker 6: ponies and ignore the horses. Like I think Parker's a
- 22:24Speaker 6: he's a good player when he's healthy, he's okay. He's
- 22:28Speaker 6: not a difference maker.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Yeah, he really only had like one really good game,
- 22:32Speaker 5: Like I feel like he really didn't do it.
- 22:35Speaker 7: For me last year, for you, right, the Baltimore Baltimore
- 22:40Speaker 7: game had moments and he has he has that thing
- 22:44Speaker 7: that you know, what's what is the number, it's the
- 22:47Speaker 7: average per target, Like I don't care he missed half
- 22:50Speaker 7: the games.
- 22:51Speaker 6: I don't really care.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Separation numbers were below par, but well, I mean, Parker.
- 22:56Speaker 4: The biggest thing of Parker's that he probably was willing
- 22:59Speaker 4: to accept and laden deal like that's you know, these
- 23:01Speaker 4: are like the common threads with these guys.
- 23:03Speaker 6: But he also got more than people think. Like when
- 23:06Speaker 6: he signed that extension, we were all led to believe
- 23:09Speaker 6: that it was going to lower his cap number, which
- 23:11Speaker 6: it did, and it was gonna actually be sort of
- 23:15Speaker 6: a pay cut. Somebody described it to me as a
- 23:17Speaker 6: pay cut disguised as an extension. He was supposed to
- 23:20Speaker 6: get about five I think it was like five point eight,
- 23:23Speaker 6: like six million dollars guaranteed base salary in twenty twenty three.
- 23:28Speaker 6: He is now guaranteed to get about seventeen million dollars
- 23:31Speaker 6: over the next two years. So you can cut him
- 23:34Speaker 6: if you want, but his base salary is guaranteed next year.
- 23:36Speaker 6: It's not an exorbitant number, so you can cut him
- 23:40Speaker 6: if you want. But that's just blow torching money for
- 23:42Speaker 6: no reason. Yea, And to me, it all but ensures
- 23:45Speaker 6: that he will be on the team next year. I
- 23:46Speaker 6: don't think that's a good thing. I think you should
- 23:49Speaker 6: be looking to move on from those guys and getting
- 23:51Speaker 6: younger and better.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Yeah, well, and I think I mean, I think one
- 23:54Speaker 4: of the most interesting thing the last couple days has
- 23:56Speaker 4: been Miguel's timeline of just how much money and cap
- 23:59Speaker 4: that they have in the future. They don't have anybody
- 24:02Speaker 4: on contract, you know, it's like two years. And I'm
- 24:03Speaker 4: saying the same thing, like, there's no core here. I mean,
- 24:06Speaker 4: you talk Parker, he's Parker, Juju Joe Cardona, Joan Bentley.
- 24:11Speaker 4: So I think those are the four veterans that are
- 24:13Speaker 4: a huge.
- 24:13Speaker 6: P then you might know this guy, Mike. This is why,
- 24:17Speaker 6: That's why I'm gonna like one of my shows, a
- 24:19Speaker 6: PFF cap guy Brad something.
- 24:22Speaker 4: I'm familiar with them. I'm okay with them. Yeah, I
- 24:24Speaker 4: told you familiar with them, Spellberger or something.
- 24:27Speaker 5: It was.
- 24:27Speaker 6: It was a lot like what Miguel talks about. And
- 24:29Speaker 6: I love whim. Miguel chimes in with us because he
- 24:31Speaker 6: has all these numbers, and he has them cold, he
- 24:34Speaker 6: knows all the all the different rules, and he's a
- 24:37Speaker 6: valuable resource for that. I just don't think it's as
- 24:39Speaker 6: important as those guys think it is, because what they
- 24:42Speaker 6: what they miss and this guy's line of thought is
- 24:45Speaker 6: exactly what you're talking about. Well, the flexibility is setting
- 24:48Speaker 6: them up for the future. And what the PFF Brad
- 24:52Speaker 6: is saying is when the Rogers deal gets redone or whatever,
- 24:57Speaker 6: the Jets are going to have to they're going to
- 24:59Speaker 6: be tight. I think the Jets, the Dolphins, and the
- 25:02Speaker 6: Bills are going to be top five, top ten cash
- 25:05Speaker 6: spending and they will be a little bit handstrung when
- 25:08Speaker 6: they have to decide. He says, the Bills are gonna
- 25:11Speaker 6: have to make decisions on guys like Digs and Poyer
- 25:15Speaker 6: and high like, No.
- 25:16Speaker 3: They won't.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Those guys will be like in their mid thirties, those
- 25:19Speaker 6: guys will be gone. What you're ignoring by that, because
- 25:24Speaker 6: the Patriots are gonna have all this flexibility with one
- 25:26Speaker 6: hundred plus in cap space and all this money to
- 25:29Speaker 6: spend because they're in the thirties in cash spending, you
- 25:32Speaker 6: don't have a nucleus of talents.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Well, you're gonna use hopefully you're gonna use some of
- 25:37Speaker 3: it for Duggar exactly.
- 25:39Speaker 6: So now you're not better. No, you've just used your
- 25:43Speaker 6: money to get players that are that you already had. Yeah,
- 25:47Speaker 6: that this is my point. Like I think people look
- 25:48Speaker 6: at this and say, well, if mac Jones pans out
- 25:51Speaker 6: this year, you you pay the fifty year option and
- 25:54Speaker 6: you move forward with him as your guy, and you're
- 25:55Speaker 6: gonna have to give him an extension. Great best case scenario,
- 25:59Speaker 6: and if he doesn't, then you'll you'll move on and
- 26:01Speaker 6: you'll have a lot of money to spend for arguably
- 26:04Speaker 6: a veteran quarterback to replace them. Great, let me know
- 26:07Speaker 6: when that happens.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Number one.
- 26:09Speaker 6: Then the second part of that is the rest of
- 26:12Speaker 6: the money is going to have to, like Fred Jess said,
- 26:14Speaker 6: go to guys like Dugger or a Whenu or Ouch
- 26:18Speaker 6: or whoever else you want to do, like you're gonna
- 26:21Speaker 6: end up losing pieces like Peppers and Phillips and and
- 26:24Speaker 6: those kinds of guys because you can't retain everybody. So
- 26:29Speaker 6: now you have to pay either to retain the guys
- 26:31Speaker 6: you want to retain or to acquire guys that are
- 26:34Speaker 6: as good as the guys you're losing. That costs money.
- 26:38Speaker 6: So I don't really understand what all this flexibility is
- 26:40Speaker 6: such an advantage.
- 26:41Speaker 4: All right, So this was a classic case where I like,
- 26:43Speaker 4: I don't I mean, I'm on your side of the street.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Like I wasn't trying to make the point. I know,
- 26:47Speaker 4: it's great all kinds of flexibility. Just to make sure
- 26:49Speaker 4: you're clear, I absolutely know you that's what it's distress.
- 26:52Speaker 4: That's what's distressing, you know. And it's I don't want
- 26:54Speaker 4: to have to go out and buy a whole new
- 26:56Speaker 4: team in two years. I want to draft some star
- 26:58Speaker 4: players that are ahead and that we get to watch
- 27:00Speaker 4: and get to develop. And that's what's that's what has
- 27:03Speaker 4: me concerned. It's, you know, it's it's not that they
- 27:05Speaker 4: don't want to spend the money. They don't have the
- 27:07Speaker 4: players to spend the money on. Mike and you know,
- 27:10Speaker 4: like this is my buddy Greg Bodard.
- 27:12Speaker 6: His big thing is they seemed to be willing to
- 27:14Speaker 6: spend the money on defense, but they won't spend any
- 27:16Speaker 6: of it on offense. And he actually it was a
- 27:18Speaker 6: little bit you know, cherry picked. But he wrote something
- 27:22Speaker 6: today that had a lot of examples of the Gilmours
- 27:25Speaker 6: and whatnot. You know, a Daylys Thomas, Gilmour, Derell Reeves.
- 27:29Speaker 6: You know guys they were very aggressive with and paid
- 27:31Speaker 6: big money for and you really can't find many examples
- 27:35Speaker 6: of that on offense. The guys that they went out
- 27:37Speaker 6: that were highly talented, they got on their terms, like Randy.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Moss, they get Mount Cooks, they gave up a first
- 27:46Speaker 4: round pick. But the money it was the last year
- 27:48Speaker 4: of his rookie daal they got him for.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 27:50Speaker 6: He was on he was on the fourth year of
- 27:52Speaker 6: his rookie deal and they'd been didn't pick up the
- 27:53Speaker 6: fifty year options.
- 27:54Speaker 4: They flipped them and they flipped them.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, welkar At the time, people like they're
- 27:57Speaker 3: spending that on him. But but again was it turned
- 28:01Speaker 3: out to me?
- 28:01Speaker 6: No, no, no, I agree, And I was one of
- 28:03Speaker 6: the ones that said, I can't believe they spent that
- 28:05Speaker 6: much money, but that was by no means the top
- 28:07Speaker 6: of the market deal.
- 28:08Speaker 4: I just thought that was too much for a guy
- 28:10Speaker 4: that I you know, hadn't really done anything backup kicker
- 28:13Speaker 4: right that point.
- 28:14Speaker 6: So I do think that my biggest concern I had
- 28:17Speaker 6: come away with is that Bill is still operating the
- 28:20Speaker 6: way he's always operated, and that you need to do
- 28:23Speaker 6: these things to win games. I don't think those things
- 28:26Speaker 6: that he feels are the most important are most important anymore.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And we're gonna find out like this season, and that's
- 28:33Speaker 4: I mean, and that's as disappointing as it is, it
- 28:36Speaker 4: also just you know, kind of sets the stage a
- 28:38Speaker 4: little bit, and unfortunately, I mean, I think we had
- 28:40Speaker 4: some you know, positivity, fun Christian Gonzalez everyone, that's a
- 28:43Speaker 4: great pick, that's what they need. But you know, there
- 28:46Speaker 4: has been there that that's been kind of an island
- 28:48Speaker 4: of positivity as far as the Patriots have gone, going
- 28:51Speaker 4: back for some significant time, there's been plenty of you know,
- 28:54Speaker 4: those moments of you know, the magic going the other way.
- 28:57Speaker 4: So long the magic went the Patriots way, and now
- 29:00Speaker 4: it's just the magic when things go weirdly wrong. They
- 29:04Speaker 4: seem to be on the receiving end of it, whether
- 29:05Speaker 4: it's making dumb decisions at the end of the game,
- 29:08Speaker 4: whether you know, and I don't want to bring the
- 29:09Speaker 4: DeMar Hamlin thing, but again, just put into an impossible
- 29:12Speaker 4: position and you know, and then not only do they
- 29:14Speaker 4: not handle this that that moment, they completely fold right
- 29:17Speaker 4: from the opening kickoff. Maybe I shouldn't have said it
- 29:20Speaker 4: that way, but you know what I mean of their performance.
- 29:22Speaker 4: So it's there's just not a lot right now to
- 29:25Speaker 4: get excited about. And this is kind of the fire up.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Okay, I'm hug.
- 29:29Speaker 6: I don't care for the drama, the excitement with a
- 29:32Speaker 6: new season with I know, the excitement that we would
- 29:35Speaker 6: have had ten years ago, Like that's not the same
- 29:37Speaker 6: amount of excitement. And I know Douche was bored well
- 29:39Speaker 6: before if we.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Get back to that, but I mean, you know, and
- 29:42Speaker 4: that goes back to like kind of the reference I
- 29:44Speaker 4: was making, like, you know, for so long, it was
- 29:46Speaker 4: like watching john Snow you know, it was like watching
- 29:47Speaker 4: Tom Brady. John's Oh my gosh, we're the chosen Ones.
- 29:50Speaker 4: That's you know, we're gonna fight and we're gonna win.
- 29:52Speaker 4: And and now it just feels like we're watching a
- 29:54Speaker 4: different show about things are kind of falling apart. What
- 29:58Speaker 4: are we gonna do here? How is it all gonna
- 29:59Speaker 4: like what's going to be the final straw that you know,
- 30:02Speaker 4: breaks it or turns it around? You know, I mean,
- 30:05Speaker 4: is there is it reasonable to still believe that what
- 30:08Speaker 4: their philosophy is and how they're approaching this can still
- 30:11Speaker 4: you know, win football games if things break right that
- 30:14Speaker 4: you know, maybe I haven't totally dismissed it that it's
- 30:17Speaker 4: not going to be a surprisingly positive season, but it's
- 30:20Speaker 4: hard to keep that fire car.
- 30:21Speaker 6: But it's like, why we like, why are we in
- 30:24Speaker 6: this position now, fourth year post Brady, where we're hoping
- 30:29Speaker 6: for a surprisingly positive season.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Well, I think it goes back to the years of
- 30:35Speaker 3: bad draft that set the stage for not having that
- 30:39Speaker 3: core that you wanted to build on. So you know,
- 30:42Speaker 3: we're just getting that now, hopefully, and we're late to
- 30:45Speaker 3: the we're late to the party with that, and then
- 30:47Speaker 3: you know, you lost the greatest player to ever play,
- 30:52Speaker 3: So there's going to be a downturn.
- 30:53Speaker 6: But of course you know, of course, but you.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Know, right now we're searching for that answer on offense.
- 30:58Speaker 3: This is an offensive league, and.
- 31:00Speaker 6: I don't think he thinks that.
- 31:02Speaker 4: I think he still bristles it now, I know, but
- 31:04Speaker 4: you know that's the way it is.
- 31:06Speaker 2: But it's crazy.
- 31:06Speaker 5: It's like bristle wants when you think, like, okay, I've
- 31:10Speaker 5: lost the best player on offense, when you want to
- 31:12Speaker 5: be super aggressive and getting more offensive pieces that you
- 31:16Speaker 5: can attempt to start shipping away at replacing that.
- 31:19Speaker 3: That's the philosophy. And I think you know, you can
- 31:21Speaker 3: go back two years ago and all the money they
- 31:23Speaker 3: spent on those offensive players, and you know that's probably
- 31:28Speaker 3: their answer, Well we did that to you.
- 31:30Speaker 5: You spent money on guys that were Yeah, well it's
- 31:34Speaker 5: like you didn't spend money at the time.
- 31:36Speaker 3: They were the best at the positions availed, but they weren't.
- 31:38Speaker 6: We went through this, they weren't hat them like that,
- 31:41Speaker 6: Yeah available, okay, but they weren't. But Corey Davis is
- 31:46Speaker 6: a better player than Nelson Agalore, like he was available,
- 31:49Speaker 6: but would have cost you more money like they they've
- 31:54Speaker 6: Really that's really the only example, and we all know
- 31:58Speaker 6: that that was a very unique example because the cap
- 32:01Speaker 6: didn't go up.
- 32:01Speaker 3: That year, I know, and there weren't a lot of
- 32:03Speaker 3: people didn't have money, and the Patriots were in flush. Yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 3: you know, and then they got Hopkins last year, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 3: and they can say we've added guys on offense now
- 32:15Speaker 3: they didn't Parker, Yeah, Parker.
- 32:17Speaker 6: I mean, you know, ponies, you know, horses.
- 32:21Speaker 4: No, you're right, I mean I brown, But I also
- 32:24Speaker 4: look at twenty twenty one for as a cautionary tale,
- 32:27Speaker 4: and that's like, you know, we talk about the cap space.
- 32:29Speaker 4: That's not what I want to do again. And I
- 32:30Speaker 4: think in many ways, you're in the same position.
- 32:32Speaker 3: That you were in.
- 32:33Speaker 6: I think I think they're hitted there in two years.
- 32:35Speaker 6: We're kind of in the same thing right now.
- 32:37Speaker 4: We're kind of waiting to see what does it look
- 32:39Speaker 4: like with Kasiki, what does it look like with with Juju,
- 32:42Speaker 4: just like we're waiting to see what's it look like
- 32:43Speaker 4: with Agalore. Oh, John Neu Smith and Hunter Henry. That's
- 32:46Speaker 4: going to be our new dynamic duo. Oh my Kasicki
- 32:48Speaker 4: and Hunter Henry, that's going to be our new dynamic duo.
- 32:50Speaker 4: It's kind of the same conversations you're telling yourself.
- 32:52Speaker 3: The right if we don't see significant improvement in the
- 32:56Speaker 3: offense this year, it's it's not going to be. It's
- 32:58Speaker 3: going to be a terrible offen season next year. I
- 33:01Speaker 3: mean it's But what are you going to do? I'm
- 33:06Speaker 3: just saying that, Like, let's let's talk about changes this year.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Let's go the flip. The offense goes backwards or it
- 33:11Speaker 3: doesn't improve this year, you're gonna see change, more change.
- 33:14Speaker 6: But let's go the flip side. Like this is where
- 33:17Speaker 6: I wonder about the plan. Like, let's go the flip side.
- 33:20Speaker 6: The offense is better. Let's say you know, and you
- 33:23Speaker 6: know Kasicki and Henry turn into ay productive duo. You're
- 33:28Speaker 6: gonna resign them both?
- 33:30Speaker 3: No, but is the offense better because Mac is better?
- 33:34Speaker 6: I just said the offense is better. But want to
- 33:36Speaker 6: resign these guys?
- 33:38Speaker 3: But you may not have to. You can you can
- 33:40Speaker 3: bring in other guys because you know we've got our quarterback.
- 33:43Speaker 6: Now, okay, you think the quarterback is going to be
- 33:46Speaker 6: the reason why they're better, not because players make any
- 33:49Speaker 6: plays for them. This isn't Brady, No, I'm just saying
- 33:51Speaker 6: that's what I worry about.
- 33:52Speaker 4: You just encapsulated.
- 33:53Speaker 3: But you call those wide receivers ponies.
- 33:57Speaker 6: I think the tight ends are ponies.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Too.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Okay, so you can find ponies.
- 34:01Speaker 4: They haven't been able to.
- 34:02Speaker 3: But it's hard. They found ponies you called them.
- 34:06Speaker 6: No, no, this is a hypothetical that it works this year,
- 34:08Speaker 6: I know, but the last two years Hunter, I haven't
- 34:10Speaker 6: really done that.
- 34:11Speaker 3: What I'm saying is, if Max significantly improves, Okay, now
- 34:14Speaker 3: we can start built. Now we now we've got our quarterback.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, but do the math out on that, and then
- 34:19Speaker 4: you say, well Mac had a good year with Hunter,
- 34:20Speaker 4: Henry and Mikeasiki and now we're gonna strip, so you know,
- 34:24Speaker 4: like like and then it's another find another pony, but
- 34:28Speaker 4: they can't.
- 34:29Speaker 6: But maybe they're they're signing a Galore and Born and
- 34:32Speaker 6: Henry they're they're like, haven't even reached pony level for
- 34:35Speaker 6: the Patriots. Now, maybe it's the quarterback's fault. I don't know.
- 34:39Speaker 4: I mean, what you got to have happen is is
- 34:41Speaker 4: Parker and Juju the only and Thornton the guys that
- 34:44Speaker 4: you have under contract go off. But I'd also put
- 34:46Speaker 4: another layer to it and say, I don't care what
- 34:48Speaker 4: position on offense, you need a young player to emerge,
- 34:51Speaker 4: and I don't care if it's offensive line. Sure, if
- 34:53Speaker 4: it's tackle. If it's talked tight end, you need know
- 34:58Speaker 4: and then that's and that's like the the the room
- 35:00Speaker 4: is that they have major questions at the two tackle spots.
- 35:03Speaker 4: But if you know, one of those young rookie receivers,
- 35:06Speaker 4: somebody has to because unless they thread the needle with
- 35:10Speaker 4: the guy, the only guys that they have signed beyond
- 35:12Speaker 4: this year, those three receivers. Then even then you're saying, well,
- 35:15Speaker 4: he had a great year with Kasiki, but.
- 35:18Speaker 6: And I'm sick. Now it's gonna tell if they're all ponies, Fred,
- 35:22Speaker 6: then this is a hypothetical that it all worked out
- 35:26Speaker 6: and they did improve. So now you're just gonna say, well,
- 35:29Speaker 6: it doesn't really matter who they are, because we're going
- 35:31Speaker 6: to improve because we so we gotta do it all
- 35:33Speaker 6: over again because they had all those guys last year,
- 35:34Speaker 6: except well, you didn't improve.
- 35:37Speaker 3: You know, you've got that money, you'll resign who you
- 35:39Speaker 3: think is worth for signing.
- 35:41Speaker 6: And we've got our quarterback, so that I worry about resigning.
- 35:45Speaker 6: The resigning part is what I worry.
- 35:47Speaker 3: About, Okay, But like if Koseki goes off and they'll
- 35:50Speaker 3: extend the guy, you know, ye.
- 35:52Speaker 6: See, I don't I'm not convinced of that. I think
- 35:54Speaker 6: if Kaseki goes off, he signed somewhere else, and they're
- 35:57Speaker 6: in power to say, we'll just sign another caste who's available,
- 36:01Speaker 6: and maybe it'll work and maybe it won't. That's what
- 36:04Speaker 6: I worry about.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Well, to me, the lynchpin is Mac. He's got to
- 36:07Speaker 3: improve and.
- 36:08Speaker 6: Yes, and you're absolutely right about it.
- 36:09Speaker 3: If he doesn't, then we got bigger problems than finding ponies.
- 36:14Speaker 6: But I think that he's going to look at it
- 36:16Speaker 6: and say, if it works, it's me, it's not them.
- 36:20Speaker 6: He's just gonna let them all walk.
- 36:22Speaker 4: I gotta say, though, Fred like thinking about it a
- 36:24Speaker 4: little bit. I mean, I'm kind of split on Hunter
- 36:26Speaker 4: Henry and Mike Kisiki because I feel like Gasicki represents
- 36:29Speaker 4: an element of unknown that we're not really able to
- 36:32Speaker 4: account for. With Hunter Henry, I don't really like. I
- 36:34Speaker 4: think he's a fine tight end. I don't think he's
- 36:36Speaker 4: a great blocker. But I have trouble seeing a scenario
- 36:39Speaker 4: where I come out of this season say gotta get
- 36:42Speaker 4: Hunter Henry back. I could see it with Gasiki where hey,
- 36:44Speaker 4: this just works, they use him well, Mac likes him,
- 36:47Speaker 4: see something new?
- 36:48Speaker 3: Correct me?
- 36:48Speaker 6: But he's a little younger, right, g sick and certainly
- 36:51Speaker 6: not with the injury.
- 36:52Speaker 4: I believe, So, I mean, you know, I think Hunter
- 36:54Speaker 4: Henry is fine, but I do think it's worth a
- 36:56Speaker 4: little bit. Both good players.
- 36:57Speaker 6: I just don't think.
- 36:58Speaker 4: But again, it's the unknown factor that you're that you're
- 37:01Speaker 4: hoping that that's where your hope lives. Your hope lives
- 37:03Speaker 4: with the unknown with Bill O'Brien and with the unknown
- 37:05Speaker 4: of Juju, and with the unknown of Kasiki, right and
- 37:08Speaker 4: after that, and then you say that, then you go
- 37:10Speaker 4: what about the tackles? And you're like, that's a problem.
- 37:16Speaker 6: We've got a lot on the table.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I also have a question.
- 37:18Speaker 5: Do you think the Hopkins like not having not allegedly
- 37:23Speaker 5: not having the money to you know, sign him. Do
- 37:25Speaker 5: you think it has to do with Lawrence s guy
- 37:26Speaker 5: and him also warning more money? No?
- 37:29Speaker 2: No, I do we have enough money to do?
- 37:31Speaker 3: Yes?
- 37:31Speaker 4: I think they're going to figure it out come back
- 37:33Speaker 4: or don't. I don't know. I mean, that's I mean,
- 37:38Speaker 4: and again we're fliving into defense right now. But this,
- 37:43Speaker 4: you know, it's a guy that you don't really have
- 37:45Speaker 4: a player to replace him with. Unless we want to
- 37:47Speaker 4: talk about Keon White, and that is potentially a possibility,
- 37:50Speaker 4: But there's no easy option to replace Lawrence Guy and
- 37:53Speaker 4: love him, love him, hate him. Think he's fine. He
- 37:55Speaker 4: plays a lot of Snap's played over five hundred snaps
- 37:58Speaker 4: every year he's been here, so he eats up a
- 37:59Speaker 4: ton of playtime that they'd have to figure out how
- 38:02Speaker 4: to fill. And there's no easy answer to that. And
- 38:04Speaker 4: I certainly don't think you want to give him more money.
- 38:06Speaker 4: I mean they already gave him. I mean, you talk
- 38:08Speaker 4: about those contracts he gave out a couple of years ago,
- 38:10Speaker 4: when they gave him one of those, like, well, that's ridiculous.
- 38:13Speaker 6: You want to know who's gonna want more money this
- 38:15Speaker 6: time next year if he has another good.
- 38:17Speaker 3: Year jewd On yep. Last year, yeah, he'll.
- 38:20Speaker 6: Be entering the last year. It was a full year
- 38:22Speaker 6: deal right right on, not five.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So this Lorne Skuy thing has to be figured out
- 38:27Speaker 2: before I.
- 38:28Speaker 4: Think it's I don't even doesn't have to be you.
- 38:30Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's an issue, but I don't
- 38:32Speaker 4: think for them it's an issue. I don't think that
- 38:33Speaker 4: they're really losing sleep.
- 38:34Speaker 6: I gotta be honest with you. I hope it's not
- 38:36Speaker 6: because I think the Gotcha signing was not not a
- 38:39Speaker 6: smart one. The guys that This is why I always
- 38:42Speaker 6: push back when people say they're cheap. I don't think
- 38:44Speaker 6: they're cheap. I think they give good money to like
- 38:48Speaker 6: really good money to just okay players that Phil roles
- 38:51Speaker 6: that aren't that important in my opinion. Now, I don't
- 38:54Speaker 6: pretend to know more about football, so please just take
- 38:57Speaker 6: that with a grain of salt. But runs up defensive
- 39:00Speaker 6: tackles don't need to be re upped like that, and
- 39:04Speaker 6: he calls them like the best one of the best
- 39:06Speaker 6: defensive linement in the league. And that segment of Patriots
- 39:10Speaker 6: fans that will eat up anything that Bill says cling
- 39:13Speaker 6: to that. I saw some things on Twitter about the
- 39:16Speaker 6: the post Hopkins thing. Some guy goes, you know, they've
- 39:20Speaker 6: never had They've only had one hundred catch receiver in
- 39:23Speaker 6: the Super Bowl era. They've only had one guy with
- 39:25Speaker 6: a thousand yards. They've only had two guys with seven kids.
- 39:28Speaker 6: Who cares, they had none, no titles without the greatest
- 39:33Speaker 6: player who's ever played, So I don't really care about
- 39:35Speaker 6: the history of all de Troy Brown was the number
- 39:38Speaker 6: one receiver in O one and Julian Edelman was the
- 39:40Speaker 6: number one receiver in eighteen. Like, that's completely irrelevant to
- 39:44Speaker 6: me because you had the greatest player who ever played
- 39:48Speaker 6: like that out that overlooks anything that you have, any shortcomings.
- 39:53Speaker 6: That outweighs any shortcoming you have. When you have that
- 39:56Speaker 6: level of play at quarterback. No other team has that.
- 40:00Speaker 6: It's like someone goes, you know what, they have a
- 40:01Speaker 6: super Bowl caliber defense. You know who else has a
- 40:03Speaker 6: super Bowl caliber defense? Kansas City? You know why they
- 40:06Speaker 6: just won the Super Bowl with their defense. That's good
- 40:10Speaker 6: because the defense isn't the reason why you win the
- 40:12Speaker 6: super Bowl anymore.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's I mean, and it's not even just
- 40:16Speaker 4: like not having the greatest player of all, it's just
- 40:18Speaker 4: not having a foundation of stars, you know that, that
- 40:22Speaker 4: kind of core. And you brought up Jude On, I
- 40:25Speaker 4: mean I would consider him in that mix. I mean,
- 40:28Speaker 4: he is the Patriots highest Ranke Madden player at eighty
- 40:30Speaker 4: nine overall. But times ticking with him, times ticking with
- 40:34Speaker 4: him too. So how long is it you got? Like forever?
- 40:38Speaker 6: My order my order was a rot wow, but the
- 40:42Speaker 6: producers picked me up with an abundance of sauces.
- 40:46Speaker 4: What did you order sauce.
- 40:46Speaker 6: They ordered Buffalo tenders and they can't plain.
- 40:49Speaker 4: You're playing Buffalo wo Yeah, Fred's order screwed him up,
- 40:54Speaker 4: but I got I got barbecue sauce, I got honey mustard.
- 40:57Speaker 3: All right, Well obviously, so we're gonna take a break.

- 51:11Speaker 13: And now great moments in.
- 51:15Speaker 3: History.
- 51:16Speaker 4: I just have no confidence that the Patriots are going
- 51:18Speaker 4: to be able to expose any of these you know
- 51:21Speaker 4: weaknesses you see statistically like red zone like we saw
- 51:23Speaker 4: last week. That was a terrible red zone defense too.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Didn't really matter, No that did.
- 51:27Speaker 6: We got two red zone touchdowns.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Yes, so true.
- 51:31Speaker 6: I mean we need to have an intervention.
- 51:34Speaker 3: It's never good enough, josh us say, I'm tired of
- 51:36Speaker 3: getting sad.
- 51:39Speaker 18: Red zone That was just as funny today as it
- 51:40Speaker 18: was yesterday. Red zone, well, you know troub you know
- 51:43Speaker 18: they did they stopped them. I mean they were able
- 51:45Speaker 18: to score twice in the red zone. I mean, you
- 51:48Speaker 18: don't go from like zero for seven to like five
- 51:50Speaker 18: for five, like it usually doesn't work. That week, there
- 51:53Speaker 18: was progress.
- 51:53Speaker 6: Last week they had two red zone touchdowns, Alex telling
- 51:56Speaker 6: Ken he doesn't listen to me. Kevin Aris broke like
- 51:58Speaker 6: six tackles got any on one play that was like
- 52:02Speaker 6: the first play.
- 52:04Speaker 4: Do we throw it into the end zone?
- 52:05Speaker 19: Really hard?
- 52:06Speaker 3: Oh style points. It's got to be a you know what,
- 52:10Speaker 3: you're no longer allowed to do.
- 52:13Speaker 6: You're no longer allowed to make fun of me with
- 52:15Speaker 6: my boys, felgrin Mass because you are a wanna bee
- 52:18Speaker 6: felgrin Mass. You want to find something to pick up.
- 52:21Speaker 3: No, they had to come from twenty eight three down.
- 52:24Speaker 3: I mean they didn't.
- 52:25Speaker 6: They didn't throw the ball into They got red zone scores,
- 52:27Speaker 6: but they didn't throw it.
- 52:28Speaker 3: At the lead right away in the Super Bowl acceptably.
- 52:31Speaker 4: It's unacceptable. I demand dominance and excellence, perfection.
- 52:35Speaker 3: That's another great moment from all right. Eight five five
- 52:40Speaker 3: Pats five hundred is the ACE ticket hotline web radio
- 52:43Speaker 3: at patries dot com is the email address. It's deuced
- 52:46Speaker 3: to Mara, Paul, myself, Matt.
- 52:48Speaker 4: And the booth.
- 52:48Speaker 3: We've read Evan's statement on d hop, so that's out
- 52:52Speaker 3: of the way, it's out there, and please respect his
- 52:54Speaker 3: privacy for now. You know, his his notifications are on silence.
- 52:59Speaker 4: At the he's on vacation. It's so hard, he said,
- 53:01Speaker 4: like he just really wants to watch that film, but
- 53:03Speaker 4: he can't. He's got to he's got to vacate.
- 53:06Speaker 3: I was asking if someone had a credible source on
- 53:09Speaker 3: the Patriots offer. Akil from Brooklyn says it's part of
- 53:14Speaker 3: Breer's report. He says, whereas the Titans were twelve million base,
- 53:19Speaker 3: three million in incentives, the Patriot's offer was structured a
- 53:22Speaker 3: little like the Chiefs. After going back to before the draft,
- 53:25Speaker 3: the Chiefs offer at the time was a four million
- 53:28Speaker 3: base with a chance to make up to ten million.
- 53:31Speaker 3: So if that's the case they weren't, then they weren't
- 53:34Speaker 3: as interested as we think they were. And probably Bill said, oh,
- 53:38Speaker 3: and by the way, feel free to tell people that
- 53:40Speaker 3: we're interested if that drives up your price. But this
- 53:43Speaker 3: is what we're going to offer.
- 53:45Speaker 6: Chess, checkers, chess.
- 53:46Speaker 4: I mean, this is what they do, right they here's
- 53:48Speaker 4: what we're offering. You take it or leave it, and
- 53:51Speaker 4: if you leave, and if you leave it right now.
- 53:53Speaker 3: But this goes back to they didn't think it was
- 53:55Speaker 3: as urgent a situation as we did, or maybe they do,
- 53:59Speaker 3: but they don't think that Hopkins addresses that need. I
- 54:02Speaker 3: don't know, but it does say that they weren't as
- 54:05Speaker 3: interested as maybe we thought they were.
- 54:08Speaker 4: What do you read into the Chiefs making it so?
- 54:10Speaker 6: I would negatively, I would, well, the Chiefs didn't have
- 54:12Speaker 6: the cap space.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Yeah, so they just have to.
- 54:15Speaker 6: I would like to see what the Patriots structure was,
- 54:17Speaker 6: because that, to me is very ambiguous. And I'm not
- 54:20Speaker 6: ripping Albert Breer. He has great soil, like I'm not
- 54:23Speaker 6: has nothing to do with the source because that's a
- 54:25Speaker 6: legit source, right that you You called for it, Fred
- 54:28Speaker 6: and they gave you one. But that doesn't really tell
- 54:30Speaker 6: me what the offer was, Like it was similar to
- 54:33Speaker 6: something that the Chiefs offered.
- 54:36Speaker 16: In May.
- 54:37Speaker 6: Yeah, Like I'm not really sure that that's the I
- 54:40Speaker 6: just telling me.
- 54:41Speaker 4: The thing I'm having trouble with too, is like I
- 54:42Speaker 4: felt like Hopkins was one of those guys that Belichick
- 54:45Speaker 4: really just was intrigued by. Like I always say, I
- 54:48Speaker 4: never rule out if it's a former star player near
- 54:51Speaker 4: the end of their career. I think he's usually willing
- 54:54Speaker 4: to take a chance, and I think he enjoys it
- 54:56Speaker 4: a little bit. But that's what's surprising to me is that,
- 54:59Speaker 4: you know, they weren't really willing to go where he
- 55:02Speaker 4: makes sneaky, sneaky.
- 55:03Speaker 6: Hot take on the whole. When Belichick gushes over a
- 55:06Speaker 6: guy on the field, and I'm not talking about like
- 55:08Speaker 6: Ed Reed gushing like that was obviously genuine every press
- 55:11Speaker 6: conference every time we played Baltimore, he chose it was
- 55:15Speaker 6: an ode to Ed Reid. But on the field, when
- 55:17Speaker 6: he talks games soften up, I think he does.
- 55:20Speaker 4: I think I think it's sort of like a psychle landfill.
- 55:23Speaker 4: I don't want to beat you now.
- 55:24Speaker 6: I think it's a psychological thing. I think he tries
- 55:26Speaker 6: to use that a little bit to soften a guy up.
- 55:28Speaker 6: I'm not I'm not joking.
- 55:29Speaker 4: I mean I would have worked with that read too.
- 55:30Speaker 4: He was really cushing about that one.
- 55:32Speaker 6: I'm glad we all go out of here with that.
- 55:34Speaker 6: Glad we only have to cover you, you know once
- 55:36Speaker 6: every four years.
- 55:37Speaker 4: Well, I think it like the Sinko one of that
- 55:39Speaker 4: was a preseason that I think, same, you know, similar thing, but.
- 55:42Speaker 6: That you know, he said we're going to double team
- 55:43Speaker 6: you all night, Come on, coach, you know, but that was,
- 55:46Speaker 6: you know, similar kind of what he went up to
- 55:48Speaker 6: Hawkins last year and was like, look at you.
- 55:50Speaker 4: You know, he played half the game receiving, like.
- 55:52Speaker 6: I'm glad we only have to cover you once every
- 55:54Speaker 6: four years. I think sometimes that that's like I'm gonna
- 55:56Speaker 6: like gush over this guy. See if I can get
- 55:58Speaker 6: him off his game tonight. YEP, I wonder, I don't do.
- 56:01Speaker 4: You don't remember what they paid Ocho Cinco?
- 56:02Speaker 5: Do you?
- 56:03Speaker 6: Was that?
- 56:03Speaker 4: Like, I mean that's you know, like that.
- 56:04Speaker 6: No, and the Ocho Cinco thing was different. He had
- 56:06Speaker 6: a good relationship with O, like they joked around a lot.
- 56:09Speaker 4: Like call him Chad Johnson. Still does he still cho
- 56:11Speaker 4: sink O?
- 56:12Speaker 6: Yeah? I think he's back to Chad Johnson.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:14Speaker 4: Ocho Cinco.
- 56:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that was another one where oh we got Ocho
- 56:18Speaker 3: Cinco and then balls are bouncing off his helmet. Camp
- 56:21Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, he ain't getting it.
- 56:23Speaker 4: How long did it take you guys to realize that
- 56:25Speaker 4: this ain't gonna be Indy and Paul twenty minutes?
- 56:27Speaker 6: Fred still thought it was gonna happen in the X
- 56:31Speaker 6: Factor to.
- 56:31Speaker 4: Get you something today, Buddy, let's get yourself, let's get
- 56:33Speaker 4: you started.
- 56:34Speaker 3: This is the week, this is the week he breaks out,
- 56:36Speaker 3: Like literally we.
- 56:37Speaker 6: Had this at some point Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, at some
- 56:40Speaker 6: point every week is what if?
- 56:42Speaker 3: What if?
- 56:42Speaker 6: This is the week that, like, you know, who did.
- 56:45Speaker 4: They blame for that? Though it was never like oh
- 56:47Speaker 4: they're not using them right, or it was never like
- 56:48Speaker 4: Brady's icing them out. It was always just like you idiot,
- 56:51Speaker 4: you can't figure it out.
- 56:52Speaker 3: I had I had a theory. I know, I had
- 56:54Speaker 3: a theory that in Cincinnati, he knew when he screwed up,
- 56:58Speaker 3: he was still going to get the ball again. You know,
- 57:00Speaker 3: he could drop the pass or run the wrong route,
- 57:02Speaker 3: but he was the guy and he was gonna get
- 57:03Speaker 3: thrown to here. The pressure was on to make every
- 57:08Speaker 3: play because if you don't, Brady's not going back to you.
- 57:11Speaker 3: And I think it was all in his head. I mean,
- 57:14Speaker 3: like his his his skills were eroding at that point,
- 57:18Speaker 3: but I think so much of it was mental. I
- 57:20Speaker 3: think he was under so much pressure to make plays
- 57:22Speaker 3: because you know, you never knew when the next one
- 57:24Speaker 3: was going to come your way, and they really, you know,
- 57:28Speaker 3: he was his personality was suppressed as well. I mean
- 57:31Speaker 3: they told him no more of this, no more antics.
- 57:34Speaker 3: And he was, you know, a good patriot. He you know,
- 57:37Speaker 3: quote unquote anything. He never heard anything. And that's not him,
- 57:41Speaker 3: that's not his game.
- 57:41Speaker 4: Was he more afraid of Bill or Tom both?
- 57:45Speaker 6: I think he wanted he really wanted to fit in.
- 57:48Speaker 3: He did.
- 57:48Speaker 6: I think Fred nails it. I think it was more
- 57:50Speaker 6: mental than anything else. Yeah. Now he also was probably
- 57:53Speaker 6: not anywhere near the same physically. No, Like he never
- 57:56Speaker 6: did anything after that. He went to Miami. I think
- 57:58Speaker 6: he ended up getting cut, yeah, because he got.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so he was at the end of his career.
- 58:02Speaker 3: But yeah, you got like I think he was really bad.
- 58:05Speaker 3: He was really bad to the point where when he
- 58:07Speaker 3: would make a catch, Brady would like, that's.
- 58:10Speaker 6: Why we got you the mic up in the super Bowl.
- 58:13Speaker 6: That's why we got you to catch a twelve yard
- 58:16Speaker 6: out in the super Bowl. Yeah, that's it for the
- 58:18Speaker 6: whole year.
- 58:19Speaker 3: Like that, That type of praise tells you that like
- 58:22Speaker 3: they they wanted this guy to do something, he just
- 58:26Speaker 3: couldn't do it.
- 58:27Speaker 4: And that was eleven right, That was that was Welker
- 58:30Speaker 4: and Branch and Hernandez and Gronk and could have used
- 58:33Speaker 4: one maybe one more guy.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you could have used him. Yeah, but yeah,
- 58:38Speaker 3: he was done. He was done. And it was a
- 58:40Speaker 3: lot of press. Like I said, you know, in Cincinnati,
- 58:44Speaker 3: it didn't matter. You're always going to get more balls throw. Yeah,
- 58:47Speaker 3: but not here, you know. So anyway, eight five five
- 58:52Speaker 3: pass five hundred is the A Stick and Hotline web
- 58:54Speaker 3: radio at pictures dot com. Let's go to the A
- 58:56Speaker 3: Stick and houtline Todd's at North Carolina. What's up Todd?
- 59:00Speaker 20: Hey, guys, how you doing. I kind of triggered all
- 59:03Speaker 20: bars in the Catch twenty two on Thursdays, and I
- 59:06Speaker 20: had a question I was waiting for Paul to get
- 59:08Speaker 20: back kind of on his take on it. So there's
- 59:11Speaker 20: two things. Number one, Box, I think it was the
- 59:13Speaker 20: cow Herd said that this is problem is a Bill
- 59:16Speaker 20: problem here with the Patriots. They're not relevant anymore. Nobody's
- 59:20Speaker 20: interested in them. And the fact that Bill will not
- 59:22Speaker 20: get the stars in to play the game is why
- 59:25Speaker 20: nobody really talks about the Patriots anymore. The second thing
- 59:28Speaker 20: was the thing that I brought up in Catch twenty
- 59:30Speaker 20: two was how bad did our defense stuffer towards the
- 59:33Speaker 20: end of the year. Last year? Over the last couple
- 59:36Speaker 20: of years because they're just exhausted there on the field
- 59:38Speaker 20: too much. The stats guy boord out a little bit,
- 59:41Speaker 20: you know, Barth went ballistic and said, yeah, yea, I
- 59:43Speaker 20: asked Evan kind of poo poot it. But I'd like
- 59:46Speaker 20: to hear your guys thoughts on those two points. Thanks,
- 59:48Speaker 20: guys have a great trouble.
- 59:50Speaker 3: I don't know what do you think will be like
- 59:51Speaker 3: if they have, Well, you're not going to get the
- 59:53Speaker 3: ring chasers because you're not chasing a ring right now.
- 59:56Speaker 3: So you have to offer the most money. That's that's
- 59:59Speaker 3: just what. It's not like people don't want to come here,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: but in order to get them here, you have to
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: offer them real money. It's it's not incentives, you know.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: And the other incentive is not a ring anymore because
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: you're not one of the top teams to win, you know,
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: so you've got to just compete money wise. That's it.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: It's simple.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: I mean, I would just wonder what, you know, Todd
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: would think if you had a couple of star players
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: but your team just stunk every year, you know, like
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: what like that's the like that's kind of the flip
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: side of the coin of like, hey, we don't have
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: a lot of stars, but the last couple of years
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: at least they've been in the mix for a little bit.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: You know, what's it look like? What's the energy around
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: the team when you have star players that just can't
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: put it together. That's another side of something that you know,
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: we haven't really seen. But I mean, you know, he
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: won't go out and get the players, like it's it's
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: not that easy. You have to draft the players. I
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: think you know you can supplement with free agency, but
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: now it's that's absolutely you don't have the players right now.
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: That's that's the bottom line, whether how you want to
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: get them, you know, draft, free agency, whatever it is.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: Right now, you just haven't had them. And you know,
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: to what you were saying, you have to have guys emerged,
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: like you have to have guys developed that you didn't
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: have to go out and play pay an exorbitant amount
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: or you didn't have to spend you know, high draft
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: capital on you know, you need those gems. Those are
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: the guys that we I mean, big magic happen.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: You know. You know, like I said, we fell behind
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: because we had four or five years of unproductive drafts.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: You know, uh, and now we're starting to catch up
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: a little bit. I mean, Stevenson was a good pick.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: You hope that bar Moore, you know, plays to his potential.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: You know, cold strange is cold strange, you know, but
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: this year, you know, maybe maybe this was a really
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: good draft. Christian Gonzales, you know, you have high hopes
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: for Keyon White, you know, even Marty Map who you have,
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: you know, but at least those first two guys, if
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: they pop, Okay, now now we're now we're doing what
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: we're supposed to be doing.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: You know, absolutely those are and you know, I mean
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: what I was gonna say is, you know, everybody knows
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: all the A. J. Browns of the world, and you know,
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: but I think for every you know, really good championship team,
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: you're you're gonna probably find and I didn't do a
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: study on it, but there's gonna be those unexpected guys
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: that was a fourth round pick that you know, now
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: he's playing an important role. And you know, I think
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: the absence of those kind of guys, it's just that's
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: you know, you're kind of plugging holes with extra free
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: agents here and there, and you know, the sense of
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: continuity is just kind of gone when for so long
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: you just always kind of knew what to expect everyone.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: And you know, the other thing is, though, even if
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: those three top three defensive guys pan out, what does
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: it to mean, Like, yeah, they got another really good defense,
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: all right, Like they've had a really good defense. I
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: think we're all just waiting for an offensive guy to
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: step to the forefront and make some noise and you know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: bring some juice that and that's why Hopkins was disappointing.
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: Right, So, you guys touched on the Bill part of
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: that equation, and I think you're right. I mean, I
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: think ultimately it's simplistic, but Bill has final say. So Bill,
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: you know, has the decisions on the roster, So the
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: state of the roster falls on Bill, right, yep. So
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: I mean I know it's a say, but cow, it's
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: probably right, you know, And they don't have stars. Now,
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: I would argue that some of the problems continues to
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: be the way they like even in the draft process.
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: I think that he is not adapting and adjusting to
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: again the things that are more important in today's game.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: So keon White in the second round, what does he like?
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: What does he project as if it pins out a
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: Dietrich Wise replacement. Yeah, okay, that and that and that's
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: if it works. Yeah, Like, I like, I'm not telling
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: you that I think that guy can't play, because man,
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: if he doesn't look like he looks like he can play,
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: I'll tell you that he fills out the uniform. He's
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: a big, imposing guy. But I just wonder, like, what
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: do you like does he does he portray us like
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: a game wrecking edge athlete. I don't think he does.
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe he does.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: And I think that's you know what, And I don't.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: I think that that's a possible but you know, I'm perhaps,
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: but that's like, that's the perfect poo.
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: As much as I've sort of, you know, been skeptical
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: on that, I can see that to me would be
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: an indication that I'm adjusting, I'm adapting. This is a
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: different kind of player, two hundred and eighteen pound linebacker.
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: This is a guy that I might be able to
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: use in different ways now right now, it looks like
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: he's going to be used more in the secondary. I
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: think that's the thing he falls in love with, is
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: that ability for all his safeties to do everything.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: I don't know how much would life be different if
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: Nikhil Harry was truly worth the first round pick and
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: played like a first round wide receiver.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: I mean, it's everything you everything you're lamenting right now.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to go so far as
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: to I mean, I think the ship had sailed with
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Brady by that point. Yeah, but there's a part of
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: me that wonders, you know, had he worked out like
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: an AJ Brown? If all of a sudden Tom is reinvigorated.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: He comes in, he is a hard worker. Tom realized
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: this guy's getting it.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: If he was really damaged together, he was really really
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: I'll separate the Tom part of it. But if he
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: was really really good and you'd have it, you have
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: a number one wide receiver right now.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I think unless they traded him.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: And that's what and that's what that's what's supposed to
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: happen when you draft a guy in the first round
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: as a wide receiver.
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: Do you think that's why they haven't drafted in the
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: first round wide receiver? Is it because there Do you
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: think there is some fear that, Okay, we'll draft one
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: again and it won't.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: I hope not. I mean, there was a long time
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: where they were looking for a tight end and they
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: drafted first round tight ends and they were Ben Watson,
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Daniel Graham. They were okay, but they never really were
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: first round. And then they kept doing it and they
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: finally got Gronkowski. You don't give up on it, you know.
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: So I hope that that's not the case that their
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: gun shy because they you know, to kill Harry was
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: such a bust.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: I mean, and you can play this game with so
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: many like what if Isaiah Win had worked out as
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: a left tackle and you had a franchise left tackle
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: and we're not talking about all these like what do
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: we do? You know, like just that stability that you
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: became a custom to over twenty years is gone.
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: But what I worry about is, like, so we talk
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: about Harry, what do you think they felt Harry was?
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: What did we hear about?
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: We heard he was fifty every guy we heard what
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: they think?
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: No separation can play can play on all Michael right,
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: And if you think, if you think he's better than
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: you know, if you don't think Kaneil Harry is better
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: than DK methalf, you're stupid half no cannel. And we're
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: the ones that were stupid, right, But he he could
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: play on all four downs, he could block, he's verse,
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: he has the size catch radius. They're looking for unicorns,
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: Like unicorns are really hard to find, Like just find it.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Got to take a Deebo Samuel. Find a guy who's
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: a unicorn.
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: In my opinion, find a guy who's elite at what
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: he does, Like Justin Jefferson is probably not the best
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: blocker in the game, right Terry McLaurin probably isn't gonna
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: make us living, you know, picking up a safety to
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: turn an eight yard run into a twelve yard run.
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: But they're elite receivers, you know, Like why can't you
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: just draft that? And I think that's why, Like I
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: think that's part of the problem, like why they can't
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: because I think they tried.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: Like they're trying to check too many boxes instead of
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: just you.
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: Know, a lot of people didn't think Isaiah Winn was
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: was a tackle. Yeah, but they knew, Like we have
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: it differently, Like it's I don't think it's it's just
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: you draft a guy and he doesn't pan out. I
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: think sometimes what he's looking for is harder to do,
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: you know what I mean. And I think it's the
- 1:07:46Speaker 6: Cole Strange is another guy. Like, if they took Cole
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: Strange in the fourth round, you wouldn't think you'd be
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: sitting there saying this. Another Michael Away City South right,
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: Another Michael Lwanyu.
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: He's in there, he's playing.
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: It's great, but you didn't. You took him in the
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: first round, and you need more than that out of
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: your first rounders, especially when you're at the point you're rebuilding.
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: It's almost like avoiding the stars and just trying to
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: go for more of like a diamond in the rough.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: And it's like, I get it, like you can, you know,
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: coach up someone to be who you want them to be.
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: But I'm also like, you also need to have stars too.
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: But it gets back to my fear. You can coach
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: up guys to fill roles when you have the greatest
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: player who's ever played, right, you know, he thinks he
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: coached up those guys to fill roles.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: I could.
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: I mean, I turned Mike Grabel into it from a
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: line backter. He got twelve touchdowns.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: I could do that.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: It had nothing to do with the guy thrown in
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: the ball for all twelve of those.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: I mean, go down the list of wide receivers they drafted,
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: you know, relatively high that were bus but didn't matter.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: It didn't matter.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: I mean, that's yea and I think to human spackle, right.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: But but you know, they went out and signed Danny A. Mondola,
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: which at the time seemed like, Okay, that's a good fit.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: He had some injury issues, but he came back and
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: he de livered in some of their biggest games. Julian
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: Edelman developed, you know, so that's that's how you're able
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: to overcome Aaron Dobson and you know that twenty thirteen
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: season when they really didn't know what they had going
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: in and then it became over.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: Would as would he have been as good as he
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: was with another quarterback?
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: It depends who the other quarterback was.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Let's say Holmes, well, he wasn't even around really then.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: But Manning Danning, yep, yeah, I think his his he
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: had the athletic quickness that was going to be anywhere,
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: and he's just a dog.
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: He got that dog in him, as they say, but
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: he's ridiculously athletic and people don't give him the credit
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: for that. I think Welker is very similar. I think
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: they're athleticism and I believe me, I was as guilty
- 1:09:41Speaker 6: as anybody for overlooking that. Like so again, sometimes it's
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: easy to just say, you know, I was wrong, I
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: missed that one. Those guys were different. But to think
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: you could just turn anybody into that, which they started
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: to think.
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: But even think about how tenuous Edelman's journey was, even
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: with Brady, you know, and then it was you and
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: he's buried on the depth chart. But you know, you'd
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: love to think right now that there's a Julian Edelman
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: sitting on you know, in the lower end of the roster.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: It's hard to say that there is, but you know,
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: that's maybe that's another part of Brady.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: That we mentioned two of the best quarterbacks ever to play,
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Brady and Manning. But I think it takes it, you know,
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: when you have a talent like that that's so raw,
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: like Julian Edelman never played the position. I think you
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: need a great quarterback to bring it out of them,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: to teach them how to do it. And you know,
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: and I think that both you know, he Edelman's so
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: smart again football IQ, I don't know, you know, book smart,
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: but football IQ, he's brilliant. And so he got it
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Troy Brown's another guy. He got it. You know, it
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: takes you know, for guys like that. I think it
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: takes that combination. I wonder like if he was with
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins or would he have been That's.
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: But that's a good example. Troy Brown's a good example. Yeah,
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: he got it with Drew too.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: He wasn't the player he was with Drew.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: He wasn't the only player on the team with Drew
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: like he was in one. No, I know, but yes,
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: he was an extremely good he was he was a
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: good player because he's an extremely good player.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: But did they really use him as a slot guy
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: back then? Did they?
- 1:11:17Speaker 9: Yes?
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: I think there's too there's a power.
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: I mean he made the team as an eighth round
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: pick for.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, but I know, and he got cut a few
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: times and came back. You're right, but he was also,
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: you know, a good special teams player.
- 1:11:29Speaker 21: But and he was.
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: He was a very trustee.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: I'd like to see his numbers.
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: He didn't catch a hundred balls like he didn't know
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: one when he was the only receiver on the team.
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: Right, I'd like to see his numbers pre and post Brady.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: Well, they're going to get blown through the roof with
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: Brady because he was the only guy they had, Like
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: he wasn't with Terry Glenn and Sean Jefferson like he
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: was with Drew. But he was a good player with
- 1:11:52Speaker 6: Drew too.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Right saying I'm not saying he was a bad player,
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: but he got better.
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: And Brady's also better than Bled, so like yes.
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: And Brady was Brady when Edelman got here. So it's
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: it's also that psychological effect of I have a chance
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: to play with the greatest quarterback of all time, like
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: I you know that that just sets the bar to
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: be motivated, no offense to other quarterbacks. But I think
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: when you go into a place where it's you know,
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: Marcus Mariota, you know you're not quite as like, oh,
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: I got to be on top of it.
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: That's team bread on that, Like you have to have
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: a really good quarterback, like you can't just have any
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: any like David car Yeah, I agree, Derek Carr wouldn't,
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: although Derek Carr got a lot out Hunter renfrom But
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: go back to the the the the call it was
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: Todd I think it was a while agoing now the
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: defense part of that equation that I think he's and
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: you guys might have numbers you and Evan, I don't
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: know if you do. That did indicated it's more of
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: a second half of the year thing. To me, it's
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: opponent driven, not second half of the year driven.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: But this was the defense falling off at the end.
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, like I think in two years ago, it
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: just so happened that you didn't really face any stiff
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: offensive tests until the stretch drive. You know, earlier in
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: the year they got eviscerated by by Dallas. Right then
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: they had a steady stream of banged up bad teams
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: that they competed against and more often than not beat.
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: They had a seven game winning streak. Then they started
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: playing good teams with good quarterbacks again, and they couldn't
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: stop them.
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Like Jonathan Taylor ran all over them.
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: Now, last year to me was all hit or miss.
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: You either played a backup quarterback or you had a
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: hard time stopping the team. And that's what I think
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: is going to be the situation that they're going to
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: have a problem with this year is it's I think
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: tougher schedule. I think on paper it is a tougher schedule.
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: There's eleven quarterbacks that I think will be tough for
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: them to deal with. Now they probab we won't get
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: eviscerated by all eleven. Like they'll probably do fine against
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: Daniel Jones, right, but I don't know what they'll do
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: against Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: Right, And that's that. And like, you know, I love
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: like defense. I love watching the you know, that's my
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: favorite thing about the game. And it's just the fawning
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: over the multi safety defense that like I'm like, I
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: want to fawn over it, but it just hasn't been
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: effective against the good team. So you know, what point
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: do we say, all right, this is like on paper,
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: it seems brilliant, you know, like we're blurring the lines
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: between linebacker and safety, but it just isn't productive and
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: it hasn't.
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: And never say never, because one day you and I
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: will be wrong on this and some team is going
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: to come in with a pedestrian offense in a defense
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: that's confusing everybody, and they're gonna win on the on
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: the back of the defense again, the way the Broncos
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: did in fifteen and the way you know the Ravens
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: once did, you know, way back when I just feel
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: like it's really hard to win that way in this
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: league now, like to win enough games to get to
- 1:15:03Speaker 6: the Super Bowl and then never have to outscore anybody,
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: always win seventeen thirteen. Yeah, it could happen, but I
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: just don't see it breaking down that way.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: I mean, just what's funny though, is that, you know,
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: no matter how good or bad the Patriots defense was
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: over twenty years, it always just kind of came down
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: in the Super Bowl to a handful of plays, like
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: you know, and probably the worst defense of all their
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Super Bowl defenses had probably the best performance in that
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: final Super Bowl where they shut down one of the
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: best offenses in the league, which I don't think anyone
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: was expecting to happen given the history of let's face it,
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: like every game was a nail bier right down to
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: the end where lucky they didn't have Cooper Cup absolutely,
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: but still, you know, it's it's just interesting how it
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: plays out like that, where it's even you know, it's
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: so rare to have one team like the fifteen Broncos
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: or the Ravens of two thousand that are just that
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: it's defense.
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: In the way the game is now, like to sit
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: there and say, well, you know, well, no one stops
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: mahomes and go, yeah, that's why you know you want
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: to tell me that it's a top five defense. I'm
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: not telling you you're wrong. It might be one of
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: the five best defenses in football.
- 1:16:09Speaker 22: You know that.
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: And a coupon will get your free tank of gas
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: at Costco. Like, I don't really know what that does
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: for you.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: It doesn't do anything for you. If you can't get
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: that coupon, I don't.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: Know that's worth a lot of money.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: These days, people are always lined up for the Costco
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: gas here everyone Like I.
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: Just I feel like, yeah, I don't think that the
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: defense is necessarily overrated. I hear some people say it's
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: an overrated defense. I don't necessarily call it overrated. I
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: call it somewhat irrelevant.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: Well, it's it's today's in today's NFL, a great defense
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: isn't really great.
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: Right, And it's a snarky comment that I made about like,
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: you know who else has a super Bowl caliber defense?
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: The Chiefs, And it's it's intentionally snarky, but it's true.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: You need both.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: It's like, your defense can be really good, but if
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: they're on the field for eighty percent of the game,
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: they're not going to be very good when you need
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: them to be.
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: And how good are they if they're on the field
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: for the game.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: First drive of the game against Josh Allen, Like, it's
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: nothing to do with Like to me, it's just hard
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: to stop competent offense in today's game.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: In today's game.
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: I'm not making fun of the defense. I just think
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: it's everything is stacked against defense.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: But it seems like we're all kind of at the
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: point where like, you have to be good, But it
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: really just comes down to situationally, you know, you have
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: to make those plays within you. I mean, do you
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: think that they still think that you can be that good?
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: Like that's what they're building.
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: I think they think they can win with defense. That's
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: my my major concern about everything is that Bill still
- 1:17:40Speaker 6: thinks it's two thousand and six. I don't have to
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: have the best of all all over the place.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: I can I can do it.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: I can win with defense, we can run the ball,
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: we can do like I mean, I mean just say.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: They're coming off their worst offensive season in at least
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: two decades, and the first three picks were right.
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: He looks at us have won eight games with that
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: that offense that's what that's what he thinks. Nothing of offense.
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: All right, let's go back.
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: I know it's it's great Bard's big take, but I
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: don't think he's wrong.
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: Man, Let's go back to the phones. Uh, Mike and
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Tampa has been holding on. What's up Mike?
- 1:18:16Speaker 21: Hey, guys.
- 1:18:17Speaker 17: So when I think of our team right now, I
- 1:18:23Speaker 17: kind of feel like we're the guy on the beach
- 1:18:27Speaker 17: digging the hole. Then looking up and seeing the big
- 1:18:31Speaker 17: mounted dirt. Oh, that's impressive, not realizing all he's doing
- 1:18:35Speaker 17: is digging himself into a deeper hole with especially when
- 1:18:41Speaker 17: you look at all the cap rooms that we're going
- 1:18:44Speaker 17: to have. Paul was mentioning in it earlier, that's great.
- 1:18:49Speaker 17: Issue have a nucleus. You only have to go get
- 1:18:52Speaker 17: three four guys, and you go to five guys and
- 1:18:56Speaker 17: you've got one hundred million. Great, you can go get
- 1:18:59Speaker 17: five top of the line eyes and absolutely smoke the
- 1:19:01Speaker 17: rest of the world.
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: But when we have.
- 1:19:06Speaker 23: Nine, ten eleven positions, we got to worry about. Okay,
- 1:19:12Speaker 23: now we're back to fill in with well average every day.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: I think that might be. I think, yeah, but I
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: don't think we're that far away. Actually, when you you
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: know we're not nine ten positions away. I don't think.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: Maybe offensively, yeah, I think you are.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: I think and I think that you're going to lose
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: some of the players that you think are part of
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: the nucleus.
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I I don't know. I think I think we're
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: closer than you think. But it comes down to mac Jones.
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: I think it comes down to both mac Jones and Bill.
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: I think Bill needs to take some accountability, one for
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: you know, what's needed on offense, and two just for
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: like all of that happened last year. I mean, take
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: some accountability, like that was your fault.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: That was last year. No, that was your fault.
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: Go ahead, Mike, mh you you made mention of.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: The I forget how you put it.
- 1:20:09Speaker 17: Oh how Bill thinks defense wins championships And like you said,
- 1:20:16Speaker 17: maybe that used to be true.
- 1:20:17Speaker 20: But he what, he what?
- 1:20:20Speaker 17: I don't think he counts on as heavily. I'm not
- 1:20:22Speaker 17: going to be dumb enough to say he doesn't know
- 1:20:23Speaker 17: because the greatest coach in the NFL, it will keep
- 1:20:29Speaker 17: you from losing games. But that those and you could
- 1:20:32Speaker 17: call it a semantic argument if you want to, But
- 1:20:35Speaker 17: to me, they're not the same.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree, thanks for the cou It will keep
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: you in games. Good defense will will give you a
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: fighting chance, me a punches chance, you know, most most weeks.
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: But I agree with that that sentiment. I just think
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: that the whole notion like they have holes, like in
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: a lot of spots, and what people don't realize is like, Okay,
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: you like Dugger, Well what if Dougger leaves, Well that's okay,
- 1:21:04Speaker 6: we have well what if Phillips and Dougger leave, you know,
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: and maybe you don't have this you know, overly deep,
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: versatile safety core like I don't know, Like at some
- 1:21:16Speaker 6: point you have to identify who you think is part
- 1:21:18Speaker 6: of the future, and you have to give some of
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: these guys some of the money. Like maybe you decide
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: who Jay can replace Judon and he could be an
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: every down player and do that, and you give him
- 1:21:31Speaker 6: a big contract and you let Judon play it out
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: as the older guy and let him go. I don't
- 1:21:36Speaker 6: know if I would agree with that, but that's the
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: example of what you have to That was the success
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: formula to me of the two thousands into the you know,
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: to twenty fifteen or so, you know, it was Matt
- 1:21:49Speaker 6: Light giving way to Nate Solder. And maybe Nate Solder
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: wasn't as good as Matt Light. I don't think it's maybe.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: I don't think he was as good as Matt Light.
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: But there was a plan there and he was good enough.
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: So you didn't drop off dramatically because of Nate Solder,
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: you know.
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: And don't you think that those things like help just
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: keep your locker room in line because you don't want
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: your team to feel like a bunch of mercenaries.
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: Right, doesn't matter how much I produce, they're gonna let
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: me go after four years anyway.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: Right, Sam's in Montana?
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: What's up?
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: Sam?
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: Hi?
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: Hello?
- 1:22:21Speaker 22: Uh so first time? Last time?
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: I mean time if your phone doesn't get better, I'm
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: sorry to hear that.
- 1:22:30Speaker 22: So I'll just get into it. I know Paul at heart.
- 1:22:33Speaker 22: He's a baseball guy, sporter on a baseball thought experiment.
- 1:22:41Speaker 22: So your QB is kind of like a in baseball
- 1:22:43Speaker 22: if you could run your best starting pitcher out there
- 1:22:45Speaker 22: every game. And so I'm just gonna give you some
- 1:22:49Speaker 22: QB picture comps, and I'm curious what you would comp
- 1:22:54Speaker 22: back to Paul. So like the guys that have been
- 1:23:00Speaker 22: dominating the league the last fifteen years, like Tom Rogers Breeze.
- 1:23:04Speaker 22: I would say, like Manning is like a Roy Howe
- 1:23:06Speaker 22: day Homes is like a de gram Allen put him
- 1:23:10Speaker 22: like a Garrett Cole, Tom Roger Clemons or somebody like that.
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:16Speaker 22: So I think the hope was that, uh Mac could
- 1:23:21Speaker 22: be like a Mussina or a Maddox and kind of
- 1:23:24Speaker 22: have those elite control, elite pitching I Q skills and.
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: I get I get the h I get the comparison.
- 1:23:32Speaker 22: I don't see like, uh, you know skills like in baseball.
- 1:23:38Speaker 22: They'd say he has you know, swinging miss stuff. I
- 1:23:40Speaker 22: haven't seen it yet.
- 1:23:42Speaker 6: Yeah. So and that's where I would I would go
- 1:23:44Speaker 6: Sam with with Fred and You're like, it's it's all
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: you know, it's all in mac Jones. It's it's up
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: to mac Jones. But like I would just ask people,
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: you know, just objectively to step back and say, what
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: do you think the best that he could be is
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: based on what you've seen in two years?
- 1:24:00Speaker 22: So okay, let me give you a Boston rotation and
- 1:24:04Speaker 22: you tell me which guy he is in.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: This rotation, Bronson or Royal Oil Camboy.
- 1:24:09Speaker 22: Oh No, all right, Josh Beckett. He could he can
- 1:24:13Speaker 22: win a playoff series for you on his back. John Lester,
- 1:24:16Speaker 22: he can be great any given night, but he's probably
- 1:24:19Speaker 22: not gonna win three games in a seven game series
- 1:24:21Speaker 22: for you. Same with John Lackey. Then you got the
- 1:24:24Speaker 22: back end of the rotation. Derek Lowe, John Burkett, that's
- 1:24:29Speaker 22: kind of where I see him.
- 1:24:30Speaker 6: He could be John Burkett, but.
- 1:24:33Speaker 22: He's not gonna have a you know, two hit shutout
- 1:24:36Speaker 22: to win a game for you.
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: Across the sports. Tim Wakefield to see.
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: Pa, I don't know, he's different.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: Thanks Sam, call again, don't make that the last time.
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: Right, And plus the phone really got right right, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:24:52Speaker 6: came back, came right into shape.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: When you said, Fred, you know, it's all up to
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: Mac Jones, you know.
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: What I mean by that.
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: I would agree with you, like if you can't like
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: how many holes they I think that's where's our holes
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: to fill. And it really comes down to Mac Jones. Yeah,
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: I think if Mac Jones, if you substituted Mac you know,
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Mac Jones for uh And I don't want to say
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: like the very top, but maybe someone who's good, who's
- 1:25:21Speaker 6: really good Kirk Cousins. You know, I think you might
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: have receivers that are okay, yeah, but I don't think
- 1:25:33Speaker 6: you're winning the Super Bowl with that, because at some point,
- 1:25:36Speaker 6: the quarterback has to put the team on his back,
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: and I don't think Kirk Cousins can do that.
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: Well, he's got to work Tuesdays because he takes Tuesdays
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: as a personal day and he doesn't even to come
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: into the building. So it's what we're learning our quarterback
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: on Netflix.
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll leave that for you guys. I just like,
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: I just wonder what people think the absolute highest level
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: that Mac Jones is capable of getting to is because
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: I think my phil Simms, yeah, and I don't think
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: that's good enough. It was for the Giants, yes, because
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: they had Hall of Famers everywhere else. They won't have
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: that here, Bill, Bill, Harry cashm Leard Marshall, l T.
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: I mean, Bill Parcells, hall of famers everywhere else.
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: Dan's and Florida. What's up?
- 1:26:21Speaker 22: Dan?
- 1:26:27Speaker 19: I wanted to I wanted to call in today. I
- 1:26:30Speaker 19: waited for I waited for Paul the to uh come
- 1:26:34Speaker 19: back today. But I know Evan's out, but I wanted
- 1:26:39Speaker 19: to give you guys some takes. Let's see what you
- 1:26:42Speaker 19: guys think about opinion wise. Uh, I don't know if
- 1:26:45Speaker 19: you guys have been following my Florio's uh discussions throughout
- 1:26:49Speaker 19: the summer. He was just talking about he just released
- 1:26:51Speaker 19: the report to the Boston Love, talking about how Belichick
- 1:26:55Speaker 19: could possibly be out of a job. He's war he's
- 1:26:58Speaker 19: worried about his future in New England. Then after if
- 1:27:01Speaker 19: he goes another season not making the playoffs. Basically, it
- 1:27:05Speaker 19: goes back to March when Kraft was talking about how
- 1:27:09Speaker 19: he wants to be back in the playoffs and even
- 1:27:13Speaker 19: mentioned possibly be in the Super Bowl. So part of me,
- 1:27:17Speaker 19: part of me as a fan loving the Patriots, wants
- 1:27:21Speaker 19: to in a way make that happen. And also in
- 1:27:25Speaker 19: another way, it kind of wants to see Bill failing
- 1:27:27Speaker 19: away just because of the decisions he's made the last
- 1:27:30Speaker 19: few seasons, and I kind of want that to be
- 1:27:33Speaker 19: kind of like being presented to Kraft, like, hey, I
- 1:27:36Speaker 19: gave Bill the last five seasons to do something and
- 1:27:40Speaker 19: he's just kind of squandered it since Brady's gone. That's
- 1:27:43Speaker 19: one point there. My other point with us losing Hopkins,
- 1:27:48Speaker 19: I'm not really surprised but kind of disappointed at the
- 1:27:52Speaker 19: same time. But I don't blame Hopkins for wanting more money.
- 1:27:56Speaker 19: And then my third take is, since they didn't really
- 1:28:00Speaker 19: get anybody else, I think the only option right now
- 1:28:03Speaker 19: is to go after dal And again, I know we
- 1:28:06Speaker 19: talked about you guys talk about the last couple of
- 1:28:08Speaker 19: shows saying that does he push you over the top?
- 1:28:12Speaker 19: I wouldn't say necessarily, but I think he's a good
- 1:28:14Speaker 19: additional piece to the offense.
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: I can't I'd rather have them get a tackle than
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: Dalvin Cook.
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: Well, I agree. I mean, yeah, there's as Dan no doubt,
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: flat out don't want tackles, but I don't want Dalvin Cook.
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: I think that to me signals like we're gonna like
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: line up with two tight ends and we're gonna rotate
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: the backs and we're gonna play smash mouth football and
- 1:28:36Speaker 6: we're gonna run Stevenson and Cook all day.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: What would you get the giants of Sequon Barkley.
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: It's tough, nothing, nothing.
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: He's also injury prone, like he hasn't been the same
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: since his first year.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: I mean, I I I wouldn't be opposed to Dalvin Cook.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: It will be fine. I get what Paul's saying though,
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: but I mean, I I just think for me at
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: this point, I just want to see the young guys play.
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: I want to see young guys get a chance and
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: and see if they can do something with it, because
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: that's what I don't think signing Dalvin Cook solves the problem.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: But I think if Pierre Strong gets a bunch of
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: playing time and plays really well this year, that solves
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: the problem. That solves the problem. You know, I don't know.
- 1:29:14Speaker 6: If Kevin Harris and Pierre Strong are really good players,
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: that's how you get out of this yep. Exactly like
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: draft picks that play and perform, YEP.
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: So the more of that the better, as you know,
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: as I see it, and you know, Poul Justic go
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: back to your point too, It's like the offense is
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: what it is, and I feel like you're you're you're
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: touching on it with the defense, and I've really been
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: thinking about it. It's like, you know, it's just it
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: feels like guys like Judeon, guys like Phillips, guys that
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: they actually did find in free agency that we're able
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: to perform and and and carry this defense. They're kind
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: of peaking right now. Like like it's it's kind of passing,
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: like you're not gonna get another level of Jude on
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: this year probably at He's probably gonna be this is
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: it about as good? So you know it's that's staring
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: you in the face. So I I totally get your
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: your your.
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: Point, and I go back to like my logical. Like
- 1:29:59Speaker 6: Kansas City, they couldn't stop Philly in the Super Bowl.
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: They didn't stop them all day. They found a way
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: to win the game. Why because they want to shootout.
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: They were a little fortunate, but they had the taped
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: they had the capabilities of winning a shootout. Yeah, you know,
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: And I just think that if you want to beat
- 1:30:19Speaker 6: the really good teams, you have to be prepared to
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: be in the thirties. You can't hope they have a
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: bad day, and.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: You can't hope you're going to have two pick sixes. Yeah,
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: like you can't you can't help. Yeah, you can't hope
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: that your defense is going to.
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: Squire that one.
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: And that's what it always was with the Pats, right,
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: I mean it's if they always needed a stop or
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: a drive or both, and they got all those big games.
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: Johnson Duxbury, Hey, John.
- 1:30:43Speaker 21: Gle Okay, Hey, while I agree with Paul talking about
- 1:30:49Speaker 21: godchild those stupid contracting times, the thing that really annoys
- 1:30:53Speaker 21: me is when.
- 1:30:54Speaker 24: Ay he gets in a spitting contest with the big
- 1:30:57Speaker 24: best players, and b he get somebody like a when
- 1:31:01Speaker 24: who shot money for four years and then he doesn't
- 1:31:04Speaker 24: resign him. That's that's not roster building to be, that's
- 1:31:08Speaker 24: just playing musical tears with the roster, yep, and substituting
- 1:31:12Speaker 24: in and out play it so you never get better,
- 1:31:15Speaker 24: you just stay the same.
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: Yeah to me, that would be That would be dugger
- 1:31:19Speaker 6: like when you to me is an example of a
- 1:31:21Speaker 6: position they have actually resigned. They resigned Mason and they
- 1:31:25Speaker 6: resigned Tony, and I think in both cases they were
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: kind of mistakes.
- 1:31:30Speaker 24: What you play two positions, they don't have anyone like that.
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: But you can only play one one at a time.
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: It's not like you don't fill two holes with He
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: can get moved over, I know, but you can. It's
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: still only one of your alignments, right, Like, yes, like
- 1:31:47Speaker 6: you had Jack Mason on a big money extension, you
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: had Tony on the franchise tag. That's way too much
- 1:31:52Speaker 6: money to be spending on interior offensive linemen if it
- 1:31:58Speaker 6: prevents you from doing other things. Now, some teams you
- 1:32:00Speaker 6: could do that and they won't prevent you from signing
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: DeAndre Hopkins too. If we were going to do that,
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: then I'm all for it. Re sign Everybody didn't have
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: a problem.
- 1:32:09Speaker 24: Signing the who's the guy they like go to Kansas.
- 1:32:12Speaker 6: City Tony.
- 1:32:15Speaker 24: Yeah, yeah, yeah, they didn't seem to have a problem.
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: Yeah, and then they just let it Orlando Brown go.
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: They but they just you know, like you there's only
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: so much money you're going to invest in that because
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: you need competence there. You don't need dominance.
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: I'm with you on the guard.
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: You can't have a terrible offensive line, but you don't
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: have to have like the best, I mean on paper.
- 1:32:40Speaker 6: One of the most expensive and talented offensive lines in
- 1:32:43Speaker 6: football last year was the Colts, and they were terrible.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I totally agree on and when you know,
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: it's just it's without Chain Dugger and I like them
- 1:32:52Speaker 4: and they're good players, but they're not like it's not
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: like Judeon emerged from the draft and he's getting ready
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: to be a free agent, you know, like right true,
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: like like and we want Dugger to be that guy.
- 1:33:04Speaker 6: If you have to say right now, Yet, if you
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: have to say right now, what do you think there's
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: a better chance of those Let's take those three guys, Dougger,
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: when uch better chance that they resign all three or
- 1:33:14Speaker 6: just one of the things, just.
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: One, one hundred percent, just one.
- 1:33:17Speaker 21: I don't know.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: I mean, I think I think the best that you've resigned, Dougger,
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: and that's at best, and that's if they resign any
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: of them, Like I mean with I think it's gonna
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: be the Yeah, you're a third down guy, we can
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: draft another third down guy. And I don't necessarily disagree.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: I really like josh Ucha as a guy and his progression,
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: and you know, it's almost like more goes back to
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: what I was saying of establishing a hierarchy and a
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: culture of guys who are here that we drafted, that
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: played well, that were rewarded and are now the team's lead.
- 1:33:44Speaker 6: Interesting to see how that.
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: I just don't get why you wouldn't invest in what
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: you have poured into, like you have poured so much
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: time into into developing these guys, especially the ones that
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: are like great on the field and off the field.
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: It's like, why would you not keep them.
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: Right well, like teacher Quiz is, like, you know, like
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: that's their example because he's amazing off the field, you know,
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: and he's he's a pretty good guy, like you know,
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: I mean, they had a breakout yere last year, but
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: it's you know, one of those guys that they can
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: get on their terms. And you know, I just I
- 1:34:12Speaker 4: wonder what it's like when you actually are staring down
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: the barrel of a player that you feel like is
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: an absolute must resign. And as much as people want
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: to say that Kyle Dugar is an absolute must resign,
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: I don't see him quite in that level.
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: Just I would agree with you, Mike, you know, I
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: agree with you. I like Doug Alive.
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: What's it look like when Christian Gonzalez finishes his year
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: five and it's like, all right, you drafted him at
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: twenty one, he's twenty six, He's got you know, seven
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: eight years left? What now you know? And I don't
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: know if it's to be in the same position now,
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: but that The.
- 1:34:41Speaker 6: Only thing about Douger is like I keep talking about
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: Phillips is probably this is probably it for him. Pepper
- 1:34:47Speaker 6: signed a two year deal yep. So if you're looking
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: in twenty twenty four of you know, no Dougger, no Phillips,
- 1:34:57Speaker 6: Peppers in this last year, maybe you know you better
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: hope mop who really panned out Josh Bledsoe.
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm also wondering, like.
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: What it would be like if Bill wasn't GM and
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: head coach, Like I kind of wish he there was
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: a separation, no way, so that someone like I feel
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: like there needs to be someone to like step in
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: and say, like we are doing this, like it's in
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: terms of the roster.
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: You know, I like there'd be a napkin come out
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: and something quickly written on it.
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: I agree with that, But I also think that they're
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: related because I think that he the reason he believes
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: what he believes from a personnel side is because he
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: caters to his coaching style. So I think there's still
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: related in a lot of ways. I'm not sure like
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: if you had different players that it would look all
- 1:35:47Speaker 6: that different, because I think you would coach it the
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: same way.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: Jeff and Brooklyn writes, and it's really hard to judge
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: that this player is worth it and this player isn't,
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: and this player will save the season, et cetera. Obviously
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: there are a handful of historic players who can elevate
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: the entire team, but only a handful. I really wanted
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: Hopkins too, but my desires are in a vacuum. Maybe
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: it wasn't the right fit. Where in life is there
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: not a price you are willing to pay in a
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: price you aren't. This is not to say that all
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: of your points and concerns aren't valid. In the past
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: few seasons haven't been brutal, but I don't want to
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: disregard Bill's strategy for the overall concept of football and team.
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: I just think there are a lot of factors beyond
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: a singular player's skill set at a certain point of time.
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: Can can you tell me what that is? Then, what
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: that strategy is, because I mean, I'm willing to listen.
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: I'm you know, I'm stubborn, but I'm not stupid. Like
- 1:36:39Speaker 6: I'm willing to listen to a plan. I just I
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: have not been able to figure out what the plan
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: is post Brady, and I don't.
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: Think like the players can tell you either, you know,
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: like I mean, like we're just coming off this a season,
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: you know, throw everything else before out the window. Last
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: season was not acceptable. The way that the team responded
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: to the coaching and I mean, I think you could
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: hold up nine because you saw behind the scenes a
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: little bit as another example of that. But I'd never
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: seen anything like that. And I mean that's the stuff
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: I love that, you know, the team building and pushing
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: the right buttons and all those kind of things. And
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: I mean, I gotta be honest, it doesn't seem like
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: they're pushing the right buttons right now, you know, at
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: least up until this point. We'll see what this team
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: looks like and what buttons they try to push for them.
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: But it seems it all seems like a trial and error.
- 1:37:22Speaker 5: Like every year it's like something else they're experimenting with,
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: trying to find the right formula to find success post Brady.
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: Yeah see this year. Welcome to the NFL without a
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: court of that I know, and no disrespect to Mac,
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Yeah. Robin san Diego via Connecticut, Well,
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: you know, I didn't mean it to come out like
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: you don't have anybody. We hope we have a go.
- 1:37:45Speaker 6: I just don't know I know exactly what.
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: Robin san Diego via Connecticut, apologies that this was discussed already,
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: but I have an observation in question for the crew.
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: Prior to the draft, many of us were waiting to
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: see what moves Bill might make and we're left underwhelmed.
- 1:38:01Speaker 3: Then attention went to the draft. Maybe he'sa Flowers, but
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: that passed with only some late round picks. After the draft,
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: it was Jerry.
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: Judy and d Hop talk.
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: Long story short, Bill has decided multiple times to not
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: significantly upgrade the wide receiver group. Does this crew think
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: Bill believes he can win with this group of wide receivers?
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: If so, what's worse Bill punting the position or actually
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: thinking this level of talent can compete.
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: B Yeah, well, I think he thinks he can coach
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: up this level of talent to be able to compete.
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: But I mean, look, he did that. I mean I
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: think in his mind, Juju is probably an upgrade on
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: Jacoby Myers, and I think that Gasiki probably is definitely
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: going to be an upgrade on John Smith. So you know,
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: I know there was almost talk about could they get Judy,
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: could they get this guy? I mean, they did do
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: a couple things, and I think that that for him
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: is enough.
- 1:38:50Speaker 5: That's what you know, do you think it could be
- 1:38:52Speaker 5: like this could be a measuring stick for mac Jones
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: in the sense of, like, I'm not gonna upgrade you
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: all the way.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna upgrade you a little bit it from last
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: year to see like, you know.
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: People, I don't know that that's like a psychological warfare.
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: Like I just I can't agree too much in itto
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: it like because I just I think that he thinks
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: that if a quarterback isn't a good system and everybody
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: knows what they're doing, and the quarterback knows how to
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: make good decisions and get the ball out, that will
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: move the ball almost score points. And that's what And
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: that's as simple as it as it gets.
- 1:39:20Speaker 6: He thinks it's about scheme, not about players. That's what
- 1:39:23Speaker 6: worries me. If I have a competent player with a
- 1:39:26Speaker 6: competent system, I can move the ball no matter what.
- 1:39:29Speaker 6: That's my number one nothing even close to second concern.
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: Which is crazy to think then that he put Matt
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: Patrician in charge the offense if it's so important.
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: To him, you know, like because he doesn't think there's
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: anything to it. This is my point. He just thinks,
- 1:39:44Speaker 6: just where to die. We're going to tell you what
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: to do.
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: Just go do it, Just do it? Why don't you
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: do it?
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: Rick and Dallas, thanks for another great show. I won't
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: ask about Hopkins as it's still too depressing to think
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: it shows Tannehill and the Titans over Max, So instead
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: I'll ask about something mentioned during last week's show. You
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: guys were speaking about the relationship between Brady and Belichick
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: at the start of his career. All the stories indicated
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: Belichick took Brady under his wing and taught him everything
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: he needed to know about the QB position, football and
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: being a professional. Based on all the reporting, it doesn't
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: sound like Mac has the same type of relationship with Belichick.
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: My question is this, do you think the perceived animosity
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: between quarterback and coaches because Mac doesn't feel he's getting
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: the same mentorship. Also, why would Belichick not invest the
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: same energy into Mac that he did with Brady.
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: Do you ever think maybe Brady deserves more credit than
- 1:40:38Speaker 6: you gave him at the time.
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: Yeah no, but even Brady said that, you know, he
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: did really help me, And so I think it's a
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: good question, like from a mentorship, from teaching a guy
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: the ropes of playing in the NFL. Take it is
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: Belichick giving Mac that attention, and if not, who is like,
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: what back coming into the league can't use that type
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: of help. I think they all. I don't care if
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: it's Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:41:05Speaker 6: He certainly got his rookie year from Josh Yeah.
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Patrick Mahomes. I think every player, especially a quarterback,
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: needs somebody taking them under their wing and showing them
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: the ropes of of what the NFL is like and
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: how to succeed.
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: For sure, you saw that with Daniel Jones. You saw
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: that when he didn't have that, and you saw what
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: he was able to do last season. So it'd be
- 1:41:27Speaker 5: interesting to see in another year under dable what he's
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: able to what he's able to do.
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: Right, you know? So you know, was was you know,
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: Joe Judge was the quarterback coach last year. I mean,
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: was he supposed to be doing it? I don't know.
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: You know, Paul mentioned Josh McDaniels is a good guy
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: to have your first year.
- 1:41:47Speaker 6: He certainly had that as a rookie.
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: Ye yeah.
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: Now he's gone though, you know, so was he still
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: afforded you know, like the Tom Bill sit down on Tuesdays? Like,
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: you know, is he still afforded that? I think?
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: I mean when Brady came in, he had was Charlie
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: Weis's the offensive coordinator right away that first year, you know,
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: But I'm sure Belichick did teach Brady a lot and
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: and I think a lot of it was through osmosis.
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: Brady saw how Belichick was running his team, team first,
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: all that stuff, and Brady said, yeah, that makes sense
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: to me. That makes sense to me. And Brady was
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: his number one ambassador.
- 1:42:24Speaker 6: And I have no doubt that Brady benefited more, you know,
- 1:42:27Speaker 6: like Dick ray Byn his rookie year and Charlie is
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: the coordinator and then Bill, you know, at the top.
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: But I just I'm sorry if I find it hard
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: to believe that like Bill's sabotaging.
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: Mac oh, I don't think that.
- 1:42:43Speaker 6: Him came in. Bill was just like he was with Brady,
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: like he had Josh mcdamis was the offensive coordinator, and
- 1:42:51Speaker 6: now he made a decision last year that mac obviously
- 1:42:54Speaker 6: didn't agree with, and that caused friction.
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: I think I think last year was a mess, a
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: monumental mess. And I think Bill probably didn't take long
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: for him to realize this is not good. But I've
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: made I've made my bed. We now have to sleep
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: in it. I think he tried to make it work
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: with Judge and Patricia, you know, like I'm not gonna
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: butt in. Let them work it out. Hopefully it'll work out.
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: I'll never forget that game. I think it was against Minnesota.
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: Mac comes over to the sideline because it was a
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: critical situation and Bill was standing about twelve feet away
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: and I could see him like should I go over there?
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: And he didn't get involved in the conversation. I'm like,
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: that's not right. What in this situation? What team head
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: coach doesn't get involved in the conversation between the quarterback
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: and the coordinator? Of course they're there, and he didn't.
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: And maybe I'm making too much of it, but to me,
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: it was symbolic of like the situation, Like, you know,
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: Bill knew it was a bad situation and he didn't
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: want to take away from Patricia with the quarterback and
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: then that moment, but he probably should have and it
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: was just a mess. It was just a mess and
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: it wasn't gonna work.
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: This season needs a thirty for thirty, I think, because
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: there's just so many I would just love to know
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: what was going on behind the scenes, because they've always
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: like prided themselves on finding our identity. You know, things
- 1:44:16Speaker 4: aren't working. Twenty e team, we're gonna find you know,
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: we're gonna go to the heavy run game that we're
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: gonna We're gonna, you know, go to, even if it's
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: not what we want to do. We're gonna do whatever's
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: best for the team to try to win games. But
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: they had nowhere to go, Like, there was no way
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: out of that offense once they started it. And I mean,
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: I can only if all the amateur analysts like us
- 1:44:34Speaker 4: are watching them, seeing how bad it is, how how
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: many stupid mistakes, how many things that you never saw
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: around here, then you know what it's like when he's
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: putting it up on the big board down the hall
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: and they're talking to like, I mean, he must have
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: been absolutely beside himself, but there was no way out
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: of it. So I just and then how is it
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: all gonna translate into this year? And now it's like,
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: oh God, now we're just gonna put Bill Bryant, you
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: go just deal with this like I don't. But I
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: hope that he's helping. I hope he's having these meetings
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: with Mac and that he's passing on his knowledge and
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: all those things that you know, are most valuable to
- 1:45:05Speaker 4: the player. You know, I I just but I'm with Paul.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: The people that you know go like above the he's
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: just trying to like rig things so that it you know,
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: like just despite everyone or you know, like he's not
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: getting good players lose games.
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: Just the people saying he's just doing it to break
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: through his record, well, that's not helping them break record.
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: Well, and the other the other part of like the
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: whole Mac thing and how these personnel moves tied. Like,
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: so the argument is that you need to get as
- 1:45:34Speaker 6: much weaponry around Mac to see what you have. Well,
- 1:45:38Speaker 6: doesn't that kind of go to the Bill thing that
- 1:45:40Speaker 6: we complain about, Like Bill thinks it doesn't really matter
- 1:45:43Speaker 6: the quarterback doesn't really matter because you get it. Well,
- 1:45:45Speaker 6: that's kind of you kind of want him to do
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: it his way.
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: You got to have somebody that's good.
- 1:45:51Speaker 6: Well, I'm talking about the argument that you you can't
- 1:45:55Speaker 6: find out about Mac Jones because you have DeVante Parker
- 1:45:58Speaker 6: and Juju Smith Schuster and Hunter Henry and Mike those
- 1:46:01Speaker 6: aren't NFL players.
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: And I think they they said at the very top
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: of the show they believe and I think they believe
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: they are too. I think they do. You know, I
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: think they've underperformed and we'll see what happens with Bill.
- 1:46:12Speaker 6: But my argument is always I fall back on, like, Okay, yeah,
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: you can stack it and make sure you have a
- 1:46:18Speaker 6: star at every spot around your quarterback. What do I
- 1:46:21Speaker 6: need the quarterback for now? Like, there's nobody in the
- 1:46:24Speaker 6: league that has that, that has a terrible player playing quarterback,
- 1:46:28Speaker 6: but just stars all around him and they're they're great.
- 1:46:30Speaker 5: Like No.
- 1:46:31Speaker 6: Two is okay, and he's lifted by talent around him. Sure,
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: but he's good, but he's good. Yeah, Rock Purty Rich
- 1:46:38Speaker 6: and maybe maybe Brock Purdy that might be.
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: The test of it.
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: But Rich in New York City. I think at the
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: end of the day, De Hop and Bill O'Brien wouldn't
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: have gotten along even if the Patriots paid him. O'Brien
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: made the comment about Aaron Hernandez in Houston when talking
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: to d Hop right before the trade to Arizona. That's
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: something that's tough to forget. I don't know what that
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: comment was.
- 1:46:58Speaker 6: What he said. He didn't he's seen signs of going
- 1:47:03Speaker 6: down in Aaron Hernandez road or something like that. That's
- 1:47:05Speaker 6: pretty that's what caused the whole do you guys not reading?
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: I thought I thought it was Mari he was taking steroids.
- 1:47:12Speaker 6: He didn't take steroids until he got to Arizona.
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: Okay, I don't know.
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: He was worried about Hopkins off the field and crowd,
- 1:47:24Speaker 6: and Hopkins got really offended by it and demanded a trade.
- 1:47:27Speaker 6: Like that's how that whole thing is something I mean interesting.
- 1:47:29Speaker 6: That's basically the gist of it. I'm not giving you
- 1:47:31Speaker 6: any detail, but yeah, there was Aaron. The email was right,
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: there was an Aaron Hernandez comment that really got under Hopkins' skin.
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: So how do you get over that?
- 1:47:40Speaker 6: Well, supposedly if you want to believe these stories, which
- 1:47:43Speaker 6: I'm believing that original story. So there's no reason to
- 1:47:46Speaker 6: believe these stories that have come out since about Hopkins
- 1:47:49Speaker 6: that they've worked past that and have no problems, right, Yeah, Like,
- 1:47:52Speaker 6: if you really thought that Hopkins wouldn't play for O'Brien,
- 1:47:55Speaker 6: why would he come here? Yeah?
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: Why would he come visit already?
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: Even visit like you know what Bill?
- 1:48:00Speaker 6: I mean, I've come to play for you, but you
- 1:48:02Speaker 6: have an offensive coordinator.
- 1:48:03Speaker 3: I go on the visit. It'll help your market.
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: Never rule money.
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: If I hate a guy and I'm not playing for him, now,
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: don't go through the motions can do The show of
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: the Patriots ever helped the market, But well, you don't
- 1:48:18Speaker 6: want to drive it down.
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: You don't just want one team bidding on you, because
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: then it's not a bid, then it's you know, you
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: want to get at least two teams.
- 1:48:27Speaker 6: I believe the stories that have come out that said
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: that they have moved past that and would have no problem.
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I heard that story too. It seems like, but
- 1:48:36Speaker 3: you don't know where that story came from, Paul what
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: story that they've moved past it?
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: But like I believe, Like I don't know where the
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: other Aaron Hernandez story came from either.
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: I believe, but I believe.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: Do we believe that Mac Jones can move past what
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: happened less?
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: Yes, Like I don't. I don't believe that that was
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: an impediment in this contract negotiation. Let's put it that way.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: I do believe Mac can move past last year. I
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: at least I hear it in his voice, I see
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: it in his body language. I think he can.
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: I think he can't too, But I think I want
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: to see how you're actually I.
- 1:49:13Speaker 6: Think he can't too. I have not seen it in
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: his voice, and I have not seen it in his
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: body language. But I do believe he can move past it.
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: Well, I mean, and I get what they're saying, though,
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: like I just, I mean, I've said it before. I like,
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: you know, just he's handling himself better at the podium generally.
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: I mean, whether that translates to the field is to
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: be seen. But it's like any football season, it's, you know,
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: how do you handle the adversity, and it's you know,
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: it's not going to be a seventeen and o season.
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: It might be a rough start, they might.
- 1:49:36Speaker 6: Get pounded right out of the gate, you know, but
- 1:49:39Speaker 6: when the first sentence of your meeting with the twenty
- 1:49:42Speaker 6: twenty three Patriots media is it's much better than last
- 1:49:45Speaker 6: year or something of that effect, I'm sorry.
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: He ain't moved past it, no, And that's and that's
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: something that they might have to deal with too. I mean,
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: I think he will that. You know, they got to
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: get into this team's identity, this team's problems and start
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: to work through that stuff because if they don't get
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: that shadow last season, and it's easy to do, I mean,
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: we do it. You know, we did it today. We
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: do a lot of shows. All of a sudden, you're
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: just sitting here scratching your head of like what the
- 1:50:08Speaker 4: hell did they do with twenty twenty two?
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: But the buzzer was normal? Normal, right, right, seems pretty good.
- 1:50:13Speaker 6: It's normally good.
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: It's normal. And that was the first thing he said.
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: It's an offensive coordinator teaching me the offense that he knows,
- 1:50:18Speaker 4: and I'm running it.
- 1:50:19Speaker 6: And that's why I think it'll work, because I think
- 1:50:22Speaker 6: ultimately he's going to get to that stage it is like, okay,
- 1:50:25Speaker 6: now we're now I've been in this for three months,
- 1:50:27Speaker 6: right now, you don't have that here's camp. Okay, this
- 1:50:31Speaker 6: is we're back in an NFL offense. Yeah, yes, that's
- 1:50:34Speaker 6: why I think he'll get past it. But I'm not
- 1:50:36Speaker 6: judging on his words and I'm not judging on his
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: body language, because I don't think either one of those
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: things were great in the spring. Oh I thought I
- 1:50:43Speaker 6: thought he was fine when he's talking about it's normal.
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: Yeah he can get Yeah, that's that's part of it.
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: That over it, it's over, But like that's part of it, Like, yeah,
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: this is better, this is good. So it's a it's
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: a process to get over it. Now, Like you said,
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: ultimately I like him not if they come out last year,
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: they come out stinking, you know, and they are zero
- 1:51:02Speaker 3: and three and the offense is putting up twelve points
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: a game. You know, the s could hit the fan.
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: But you know, right now, I think he can get
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: over it.
- 1:51:10Speaker 6: What do you think it would have to be for
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: Bailey ZAPPI to play?
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: I mean interceptions.
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: I think, you know, hitting guys in the back of
- 1:51:18Speaker 3: the helmet, throwing the ball the wrong way down the field,
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: like like what happened last year.
- 1:51:23Speaker 6: I think it would have to be that bad.
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: Huh yeah, four games.
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: I think you gotta stick with this guy. You got to.
- 1:51:28Speaker 3: You gotta stick with Mac. I mean, if you if
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: you take imagine that, you know, whatever it is that
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: has to happen, and you take Mac out, it's week
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: five and he gets benched. What are we doing now?
- 1:51:42Speaker 6: You gotta be careful if.
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: You end up. I wouldn't be mad if we saw
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: not Bailey Zappy, but another quarterback come in for like
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: specific plays.
- 1:51:52Speaker 6: No, you're thinking the other guy, he's a wide receiver.
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: I wouldn't be mad at that.
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: Well, i'd be furious. Well, now you're talking about a
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: whole new offense as well.
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: But not all the time.
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: Just you know a couple.
- 1:52:07Speaker 6: Can I just play? Can I play?
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: You want to play?
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: You want to get nuts, Let's get nuts, Let's get nuts.
- 1:52:13Speaker 6: What if we're just wrong? What if we're all wrong
- 1:52:16Speaker 6: about what that is? That's I don't know, but that guy.
- 1:52:21Speaker 6: But what if he's better than we think he is?
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: What if we're all wrong? It has happened before you.
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: Know, I know what's the guy's name from the forty
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: nine ers.
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: Rock Purty bro.
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: Everybody likes to tell me when I'm wrong, like, and
- 1:52:32Speaker 6: I have no problem admitting it. What if I'm wrong?
- 1:52:34Speaker 6: What if we're all wrong about Zappie? See him?
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: Then then I'll be happily wrong. But but what wrong
- 1:52:39Speaker 3: is he gets a chance to play?
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: But it's like, well, what are we doing if we
- 1:52:42Speaker 6: take him out after like four or five weeks? Well
- 1:52:44Speaker 6: maybe the other guy's better.
- 1:52:45Speaker 3: No, but we're wrong. I'm just saying, hope, pray to
- 1:52:48Speaker 3: God that that's true. Because you're done with Mac right,
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: Matt's done.
- 1:52:53Speaker 6: Well, you wouldn't make a move that's not injury related
- 1:52:56Speaker 6: if you didn't think he was done. Oh, you're not
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: going to take him out unless you don't think he's No.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: I'm saying he gets benched because of performance.
- 1:53:03Speaker 6: Yes, but but maybe in concert with that is the
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: other guy is playing better than him in practice, and
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: I want to see what it looks like with the
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: other guy. Yeah, again, we would have to be wrong
- 1:53:14Speaker 6: in that scenario. Do you think, like, we don't think
- 1:53:16Speaker 6: that Zappi is any good?
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: We just think he's a backup. Maybe we're wrong.
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: I just think Mac has to get like because it's
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: not going to be an excuse last year. He can't
- 1:53:25Speaker 4: be mad about last year anymore. It's not you know,
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: like like the like it's got he got to bury
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: that or else. Do you think like I mean that
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: now we're getting down the road.
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: Wait wait, wait, but do you think so? I know,
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: what if zap is better in practice, but like politics tell.
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: You that you need to start.
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: Well, No, now we're talking about two thousand and one.
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: Brady was according to legend, Brady was better in practice
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: and they were seeing signs.
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: But that's different. Though about bled Cell lost his job
- 1:53:54Speaker 6: because of injury. I know that's fine, but but but
- 1:53:57Speaker 6: I'm talking about just playing I but.
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: Hear me out though. I legend has it, you know,
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: whether you want to call it revisionist or twenty twenty
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: in hindsight. But you know, Belichick, people have said that
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: they thought that Brady might be the best quarterback on
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: this team. And they said that before he said that.
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: They may never have made They said that before Bledsoe
- 1:54:19Speaker 3: got hurt and it was just inevitable.
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: Charlie Weiss told me that we I said, when would
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: you have made the move? He said, we may never
- 1:54:26Speaker 6: have made that.
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: We may never have I bled Yeah, see, I feel
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: like that could happen.
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: But that was different. They had just given Bledsoe one
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: hundred million dollar content that was huge at that time.
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: I mean, that's not the case with Mac.
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: Money is the cap was so constrictive that they treated
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: him the next year.
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: Yeah, so amazed they were paying this guy all the money.
- 1:54:49Speaker 6: You know the cap was even crap.
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: Then well it's I mean, there's no comparison to Mac
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: and Bledsoe. But you know, I just haven't seen anything
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: out as happy and I would welcome it if did.
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: I've seen things out of zappy couples. I think he
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: makes quick decisions. I think he gets the ball out
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: of his hand quickly, you know.
- 1:55:10Speaker 6: I think, so, what if he's better than Mac? That's
- 1:55:12Speaker 6: my question. What if we're wrong and he's better than Mac,
- 1:55:16Speaker 6: then that's good for the patron I think you got to.
- 1:55:18Speaker 4: I mean, if they really believed it, I would say
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: trade Mac cam Yeah, get rid of Mac and then
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: just go with it.
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: Yeah, Well that ain't gonna happen. Why they're not gonna
- 1:55:27Speaker 6: trade Mac in camp? I just said it. He literally
- 1:55:31Speaker 6: just said, well then you know they had come to
- 1:55:33Speaker 6: that conclusion, but.
- 1:55:34Speaker 3: You're not gonna trade Mac, gonna realize that Zappi is
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: better until at the end of the until the seasons progressed.
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: All right. So I'm trying to play right here with
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: Paul's little games, making sure I got my facts right.
- 1:55:45Speaker 6: Well, it'll be like if we I mean, there are
- 1:55:48Speaker 6: no rules. It's silly, you know.
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: Like people said that they saw in practice in training
- 1:55:53Speaker 3: camp that Brady's really good.
- 1:55:55Speaker 6: Did you remember that, Paul, but not better than bled something?
- 1:55:58Speaker 6: He was much improved. He passed over Damon here.
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: Yeah, there were four quarterbacks in the roster back then,
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: A three. I thought it was four his rookie year,
- 1:56:07Speaker 3: there were four. Yeah, anyway, he leaped for everybody to
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: be the number two. But like, and I'm just being
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: honest here, maybe I just wasn't paying attention to this
- 1:56:16Speaker 3: guy named Tom Brady back then. But I usually just
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: watch you, right, I mean there was no like this guy.
- 1:56:25Speaker 6: No, but Brady was noticeably bad. I agree better, but
- 1:56:29Speaker 6: I agree with I'd never thought of him as right.
- 1:56:32Speaker 3: Right, And those who say that, oh I saw it then,
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:56:35Speaker 4: Well, how often did you guys clock a backup quarterback
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: when Brady was the guy. Were there any any guys
- 1:56:40Speaker 4: that you remember being like, oh, he looks pretty good.
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: When Brady was the guy. The only guy whoever looked
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: like he had a Monica lovability was Garoppolo. Yeah, and
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: that was not apparent ideally.
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: No.
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: But the thing I think about a Gropplo that impressed
- 1:56:53Speaker 3: me right away was his release. He got rid of them,
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: not thinking, I mean just his physical physical hell the
- 1:57:00Speaker 3: ball forever, but he did because rookie his rookie year,
- 1:57:03Speaker 3: held the ball forever around. It was always he had
- 1:57:07Speaker 3: no decisive.
- 1:57:07Speaker 6: And he played in the preseason games and he was like,
- 1:57:10Speaker 6: it was like totally different guy.
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: Yeah, but his release, you know, his quick release is
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: half the time of Brady. You know, there was no
- 1:57:17Speaker 3: wind up stood.
- 1:57:20Speaker 6: Most of the guys behind Brady were not impressive in practice.
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean nobody that like caught your eye and
- 1:57:27Speaker 4: was like because I mean even I mean, were you
- 1:57:30Speaker 4: ever there with blood cell though, I mean you weren't
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: realistically considering that anything was going to throw him too?
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: To Fred's point, like, yeah, we thought that Brady might
- 1:57:38Speaker 6: have gotten better from.
- 1:57:39Speaker 3: But no one ever was the kid that had a
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: few highlights Michael Bishop, No, no, no, no, we were like,
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: this guy could be the backup. Hispanic name, Come on,
- 1:57:54Speaker 3: macdudieris yeah, Judyerras. No, there was a time said oh
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: he could.
- 1:58:00Speaker 6: Only reason why the only reason why he made the
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: team was because that was the that Brady towards a
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: c L.
- 1:58:05Speaker 3: Yeah, but we were I remember we were saying, oh,
- 1:58:08Speaker 3: maybe he could be number two, and.
- 1:58:11Speaker 4: He turned out he was number two.
- 1:58:12Speaker 6: Yeah, he was number two behind Castle, right right, you
- 1:58:17Speaker 6: know what I mean, number two. But he wouldn't have
- 1:58:19Speaker 6: made the team if Brady didn't get hurt. They would
- 1:58:21Speaker 6: have just he was crap. They would have had Brady
- 1:58:23Speaker 6: in Castle.
- 1:58:26Speaker 3: All right, No, there was really nobody.
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: Rohan Davey had some moments in season. It didn't look
- 1:58:33Speaker 6: didn't I totally agree. I was like, I can't have
- 1:58:36Speaker 6: my quarterback looking like a linebacker.
- 1:58:39Speaker 3: And who was it O'Connell that they drafted.
- 1:58:41Speaker 6: Kevin O'Connell was the guy was really high on. But
- 1:58:44Speaker 6: in practice, yeah, he couldn't complete the little swing. Mallett
- 1:58:48Speaker 6: was like that too. He couldn't complete the little swing
- 1:58:50Speaker 6: passes in.
- 1:58:51Speaker 4: Practice, which is probably only which is.
- 1:58:52Speaker 3: All they ever run.
- 1:58:53Speaker 6: You've been enough enough practices.
