- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we turn to the Springfield Sun to bring you
- 0:03the news from in and around Washington County. Your reader
- 0:07today is Anne Glover, and we are reading from the
- 0:12edition dated Wednesday, May twenty seven, twenty twenty six. Top
- 0:17story local resident plunges car into Springfield reservoir. The story
- 0:24is by Jenna George Ashley Tunningly of Springfield went off
- 0:30the local Springfield Reservoir embankment, plunging her car into the water.
- 0:36This came after the thirty four year old Tunningly claimed
- 0:40to have attempted a right hand turn into the parking
- 0:43lot of Rotary Park at the reservoir when she had
- 0:47just come off of Booker Road from heading west. During
- 0:51this arrival to the parking area, Tunningly told Washington County
- 0:55Sheriff's deputies she lost consciousness for unknown reasons, sending her
- 1:01and her twenty fourteen Nissan Rogue into the lake. The
- 1:05vehicle's final position was twenty five feet from the water,
- 1:09yet submerging the suv up to the hood line and
- 1:13rendering the damage severe. Tunningly was extracted from her vehicle
- 1:18by the Washington County Fire Department and the rescue squad
- 1:22then evaluated by Washington County E M. S. During this time,
- 1:27she spoke to the members of the Sheriff's Department who
- 1:29were on the scene and said the last thing she
- 1:32remembers was turning into the parking lot and being pulled
- 1:36from her vehicle. Along with her evaluation by E. M. S,
- 1:41Tunningley went through different testings to see if there were
- 1:44any suspected drug or alcohol usage, to which none were found.
- 1:50A preliminary breath test PBT and also a field sobriety
- 1:56test were used to attempt to find the determining factors.
- 2:00Completed by Deputies John Spauding and Luke Mudd. The only
- 2:04restriction Tunningley had would be her corrective lenses surviving this accident.
- 2:10Tunningley refused transport for further evaluation, and that's the end
- 2:15of the story. Our next story from the front page
- 2:19Commander Academy holds twenty twenty six commencement. The Commander Academy
- 2:25held their annual commencement ceremony on Thursday, celebrating the twenty
- 2:30twenty six class of twelve and their achievements. Starting off
- 2:35the night, once the graduates had entered, the members of
- 2:39the Commander Academy team took their places on the podium.
- 2:43Speakers and ceremony participants included individuals such as Kyle Yankee,
- 2:50Chad Willis, Tiffany Ballard, Ty Ethington, and doctor Robin Cochrane.
- 2:56As the students sat adorned in their caps, they sat
- 2:59proud listening to each speaker and member of staff, though
- 3:04with their attention on the stage, many glances were had
- 3:07at the diplomas resting on the table upstage. Soon it
- 3:11was their time to receive these leather cases holding the
- 3:15paper reminder inside of the journeys they had taken to
- 3:18get there. The students then turned their tassels as doctor
- 3:22Cochrane spoke, ending the ceremony, before the group walked back
- 3:26off in their recessional. Following the ceremony, light refreshments were
- 3:31served to the students in their families. This time allowed
- 3:34for photos, conversations, and introductions and goodbyes shared over cake
- 3:40and soda. And that ends the story. Our next story
- 3:43from the front page, Willisburg Never Forgets City honors passed
- 3:49veterans with memorial service and a festival story is by
- 3:53Jane Reid Klein. Visit Willisburg on any given Saturday and
- 3:58you will find quiet streets and a friendly face or two.
- 4:02But visiting Willisburg on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend
- 4:06is a totally different story. Typically, on that Saturday, the
- 4:11streets are lined with vendors and food trucks and filled
- 4:15with people ready for a day of fun, food, live music,
- 4:18a parade, and a beautiful memorial ceremony at the cemetery.
- 4:23But Saturday May twenty third, twenty twenty six, was again
- 4:27a different story. The day began with light rain that
- 4:31subsided for the memorial ceremony, but picked up again before
- 4:35the other activities began. The pouring rain kept visitors and
- 4:40vendors away, but for those that braved the intermittent rain,
- 4:44the day remained fun. From the crowning of the Little
- 4:48Miss and Misters of Willisburg to the auctions and everything
- 4:52in between. The rainy day provided a full day of activities.
- 4:57Immediately following the Memorial service, a crowd gathered at the
- 5:01firehouse for the crowning of Little Miss and Mister Willisburg.
- 5:06The winners of the zero through three age group were
- 5:10Judith Jane Byrd and Brantley Cole England, and in the
- 5:14four to six age group, Norah Osbourne and Augusta Spaulding.
- 5:20The annual parade featured two Grand Marshals, Bulah Feye Chesser
- 5:25and Joe Carney. The parade was followed by another Willisburg
- 5:30Memorial Day staple, the crews Inn. Winning the trophy in
- 5:34the car show was Tanya Taylor of Mackville. Throughout the day,
- 5:41visitors had the opportunity to bid on a number of
- 5:43items in the silent auction that was set up inside
- 5:46the firehouse. Funds raised in silent auction helped support ongoing
- 5:51programs in Willisburg. Also, near the end of the festivities,
- 5:56the city holls of live auction of pies and cakes
- 5:59as a f fundraiser for the Crusade for children. I'm
- 6:03very happy with the way it turned out considering the
- 6:05bad weather we had, said Mayor Wanda Thompson. It was
- 6:09a long day, but we did better than I thought
- 6:12we might. All right. That ends the story. Our next
- 6:16story from the front page, New vehicles are coming to
- 6:19Emergency Services story is by Jenna George. New vehicles will
- 6:25be entering the county soon, alongside the circulation of money
- 6:29for insurance and other budgeted funds within the Court system,
- 6:33the emergency Management team will officially begin their journey to
- 6:37purchase a new twenty twenty six Dodge Ram pickup truck.
- 6:42This truck will be a four wheel drive with a
- 6:44crew cab, bringing the total to a little over forty
- 6:48two thousand dollars from Don Franklin. Another option which was
- 6:53looked at was a forty nine thousand dollars Chevrolet, but
- 6:57the six thousand dollars difference helped pull the Ram to
- 7:00the winning choice. Adding on to this truck will be
- 7:04a twenty thousand dollars package with an uplift, a roll
- 7:08out bed, a pushbar, lights, and even striping. In the
- 7:13budget for next year, the Court has allowed allotted sixty
- 7:18five thousand dollars for both the truck and the other additions.
- 7:22With the RAM and the other aspects, the total round
- 7:26total round up will be sixty three thousand dollars. The
- 7:31court gave their approval for this purchase and therefore the
- 7:34truck will be secured and held until the fiscal year
- 7:38turns over come July. As for the Sheriff's department previously
- 7:43totaled a Durango, the insurance money has finally come back
- 7:48around to the court. The total reimbursement for the vehicle
- 7:52is a tad over twenty six thousand, leaving them with
- 7:55the ability to purchase a brand new twenty twenty two
- 7:58dodged charger. This charger, while older in terms of years,
- 8:04has never been titled in the time it has been
- 8:06on the lot. Therefore, with this purchase, the warranty will
- 8:10start once the title is created, giving the department the
- 8:14extra safety buffer that they need. Also in the next
- 8:18fiscal year, the road paving budget has also been looked
- 8:21at ahead of time. Though the state is overall low
- 8:25on funding and some roads may not be approved, Judge
- 8:29Tim Graves is still looking into ways to get those
- 8:32roads repaired and fixed. The magistrates also made the decision
- 8:38to approve some money items which were on the agenda,
- 8:41including the insurance rates for the twenty twenty six twenty
- 8:45seven fiscal year, where they would pay the Calf KALF
- 8:50CALF premium of one hundred eighty five thousand dollars ninety
- 8:55eight thousand for workmen's comp and a little over forty
- 8:58one thousand for the health insurance. Gregor and Associates was
- 9:02approved as a third party administrator for the next fiscal
- 9:06year as well, where the rate is five dollars per
- 9:09employee per month with a minimum of fifty dollars and
- 9:13an annual fee of one hundred dollars. In addition, Magistrates
- 9:17approving the budget twenty twenty six O two Amendment iiO.
- 9:22This amendment was due to Washington County realising there were
- 9:26unbudgeted receipts in the General Fund, Road Fund, Jail Fund,
- 9:31Opioid Fund, and Clerk Storage Fund for the twenty five
- 9:36twenty six fiscal year, leading to the need of an
- 9:40increase of receipts by one million, one hundred thirteen thousand
- 9:45dollars to include these unbudgeted receipts. By the end of
- 9:50this first reading, the magistrates approved this amendment. The next
- 9:54Fiscal Court meeting is at nine a m. On June eighth,
- 9:58twenty twenty six. There ends the story. We have two obituaries.
- 10:05Donald Allen or Donnie Hamilton, seventy one of Harrisburg, formerly
- 10:11of Washington County, passed away on Wednesday, May twentieth at
- 10:16his residence. And Mary Ann Nally Rhinel, age sixty four,
- 10:26of Viola Lane, Springfield, passed away on Tuesday May nineteenth,
- 10:32at her residence. Our next story on page two, nominations
- 10:38in hand candidates looked toward the November general election. Truett
- 10:43faces Mud in November. The story is by Jane Reid Kleine.
- 10:49A Night with Few Surprises sets the stage for the
- 10:51November general election. As the polls closed last Tuesday, the
- 10:56results began flowing into the county Clerk's office. The most
- 11:00watched races in this primary for both parties was Kentucky's
- 11:05fourteenth District Senate. Two Democrats and seven Republicans sought their
- 11:10party's nominations to fill the seat being vacated by Senator
- 11:15Jimmy Higdon, who was retiring at the end of his term.
- 11:19Marion County is sure to be represented, as the winners
- 11:23of both parties across the five county district are Marion
- 11:27County residents. In November, Democrat Carry Truett will face off
- 11:32against Republican Ben Mudd for the position. Both one soundly.
- 11:37In their home county. Truett defeated her challenger, Malcolm Jones,
- 11:43six hundred ninety eight to two forty. In Washington County
- 11:47District wide, Truett one soundly six thousand, eight hundred eight
- 11:52votes to twenty four sixty nine. Mud dominated the Republican
- 11:57ticket in Marion County, but fell behind Stephen Carney in
- 12:02Washington County. In Washington County, Carney carried seven hundred seventy
- 12:07two votes, followed by Mud with four hundred sixteen, Dallas
- 12:12Robinson two nineteen, James Victory sixty seven, Lynn Shelbourne thirty five,
- 12:19Peggy Smith twenty three, and Brian Bayers thirteen. Across the district,
- 12:25Mud received four thousand, one hundred twenty two votes, followed
- 12:29by Robinson with three thousand, seven hundred fifty nine, Victory
- 12:35with two thousand eighty eight, Carney fifteen seventy six, Shelbourne
- 12:42thirteen ninety, Bayers four hundred fifty two, and Smith with
- 12:47three hundred sixty eight. Higden endorsed Mud late in the race,
- 12:51and many believe that had an impact on the ballot box.
- 12:55Another highly contested race in this primary was for the U. S.
- 12:59Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell, who was also
- 13:03retiring at the end of his term. On the Republican ballot,
- 13:08the two top contenders were Andy Barr and Daniel Cameron.
- 13:12Nate Morris had been a front runner, but withdrew from
- 13:15the race following President Donald Trump's endorsement of Barr. Across
- 13:20the state, Bar drew sixty point five percent of the
- 13:24votes with two hundred eighty three thousand. Cameron received thirty
- 13:30point eight percent with over one hundred forty four thousand.
- 13:33The voting by Washington County Republicans was much closer, with
- 13:38Barr receiving seven hundred sixteen votes and Cameron garnering six
- 13:42hundred sixty two. Democrats in Washington County did not follow
- 13:48the state numbers in this race. In Washington County, Amy
- 13:51McGrath won four hundred forty one to Charles Booker's three
- 13:56hundred forty eight. Although securing Washington County, mc grath could
- 14:01not do the same state wide. Booker won the nomination
- 14:05with one hundred fifty five thousand votes two mc grath's
- 14:09one hundred nineteen thousand. Booker and Barr will face off
- 14:14in November. In the local races, District one magistrate, incumbent
- 14:20Dallas Lewis secured a solid victory over his opponents. Lewis
- 14:24received sixty eight percent of votes with two hundred thirty one.
- 14:28He was followed by Mike Jones with seventy five and
- 14:31Devon Hood with thirty three. District two is an open
- 14:36magistrate seat, with Steve Divine opting not to run for
- 14:40another term. Justin Hatchett secured the victory with two hundred
- 14:44sixty one votes to Charles Hagen's sixty. District four is
- 14:50also an open magistrate seat, which now belongs to Ronnie Huntsberger,
- 14:55who defeated Richie Hamilton one hundred thirty six to fifty five.
- 15:01An upset in District five as newcomer John Viz defeated
- 15:05incumbent Matt Medley in a very close one hundred four
- 15:09to hundred and two tally. Lewis and Huntsberger are unopposed
- 15:14in November. Hatchett will face Donnie Baker in the fall,
- 15:19and vice will face Billy Reiney Junior. Being unopposed in
- 15:24November is not a guarantee of winning the seat, although
- 15:28unlikely someone could mount a successful write in campaign. On
- 15:35page three nine, w CHS students earn associate degrees before graduation.
- 15:43Washington County High School seniors Ashton Baker, Kaylee Gabhart, Hailey, Kelty,
- 15:49Kaylee Lewis, Jacob Pietzki, John Tate Smith, and Taylor Worthington,
- 15:56and juniors Madeline Macken and Caden Lewis have E each
- 16:00graduated from Elizabethtown Community Technical College, earning associate degrees just
- 16:05days before they were set to receive their high school diplomas.
- 16:09The students were able to take college courses during their
- 16:12high school career and received their degrees at e ctc's
- 16:17May graduation that occurred last week. Ashton Baker, who earned
- 16:21an Associate of Arts, says getting the degree was kind
- 16:25of an accident. I love learning and curiosity, she said.
- 16:29I first began taking classes to have a more structured
- 16:32version of independent study. I just kept getting more courses
- 16:37until I eventually goes too close not to get my
- 16:40associate degree. She admits it was difficult to juggle it
- 16:43all and says when she is Stan's College in the fall,
- 16:46she plans to have a lighter class load. She plans
- 16:50to attend the University of Kentucky to study history and sociology.
- 16:54Ashton is the daughter of Jody and Tara Baker. Kayleie Gabhard,
- 16:59who earned an Associate of Science, said she wanted to
- 17:02get a jump start on college and challenge herself. As
- 17:06a student at e c TC, she took lots of
- 17:08biology and science courses, focusing on those that fit her
- 17:13career pathway in animal and veterinary science. It got very
- 17:17stressful at times, with normal in school classes, dual credit
- 17:23and extra college classes, and night and working most days
- 17:27after school and weekend, she said, but overall it was
- 17:30nothing that I couldn't handle. She plans to attend the
- 17:33University of Kentucky to study animal science and then attend
- 17:38Auburn University to earn a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Cayley
- 17:43is the daughter of Brian and Terry Gabhart. Hailey Kelty
- 17:47earned an Associate of Arts and said she wanted to
- 17:50try and get ahead of her plans for the future
- 17:52while she took her basic courses. She also said she
- 17:55tried to focus on psychology related courses. It gets tough sometimes,
- 18:02but I always tried to write everything out and plan
- 18:05that it would end up being successful. She said. She
- 18:08plans to attend Campbellsville University and major in social work.
- 18:13Hailey is the daughter of Ryan Kelty Kylie Lewis, who
- 18:17also received an Associate of Arts from e. C TC
- 18:20says she took her basic courses along with a few
- 18:23psychology and criminal justice classes, and said she wanted to
- 18:27be ahead when she starts college and also start her
- 18:30career sooner. It got very overwhelming at times, but just
- 18:34knowing that I would be ahead kept me motivated. She said.
- 18:38She plans to attend the University of Kentucky to study
- 18:41criminal psychology. She is the daughter of Dallas and Leanne Lewis.
- 18:47Jacob Piasecki says he took mainly the basic courses as
- 18:51well as several advanced placement classes that he found interesting,
- 18:55including environmental science and astronomy. I wanted to challenge myself
- 19:00as I could to prepare for college, he said. Earning
- 19:04an Associate of Arts, Piasecki says the workload was definitely
- 19:08more rigorous than typical high school classes and required more
- 19:13of his time and dedication, but it was fairly manageable
- 19:17with time management. Piasecki attended the university the Kentucky Governor's
- 19:22Scholars Program this summer before his senior year. Piosechi has
- 19:27been accepted into Columbia University, an Ivy League university in
- 19:31New York City, where he will major in sustainable development.
- 19:36He is the son of Joseph and Laura Piasecki. John
- 19:41Tate Smith, who also earned an Associate of Arts, said
- 19:44it was a goal of his to obtain an associate
- 19:47degree while in high school. While pursuing my associate, the
- 19:51workload was not easy, he said. A lot of my
- 19:53classes were conducted online, working on my own as I
- 19:57paced through the assignments. It was a little challenge at
- 20:00times to not have the professor write in front of
- 20:03you to ask questions, but I quickly learned to stay
- 20:06in touch and communicate often to ensure all the assignments
- 20:09were getting completed correctly and accurately. Smith plans to attend
- 20:14the University of Kentucky in the fall and major in
- 20:16civil engineering. John Tait is the son of Wesley and
- 20:21Abbey Smith. Taylor Worthington earned both an Associate of Arts
- 20:26and Associate of Science from ECTC. My goal has been
- 20:30to build a strong foundation for a future career in
- 20:33the health sciences, so I took courses that prepared me
- 20:37for the path while also challenging me academically. He said.
- 20:41Earning two associate degrees while still in high school was
- 20:44definitely a push for me to grow both as a
- 20:47student and as a person. The workload was very intense
- 20:51at time, balancing high school classes and college coursework, assignments, exams,
- 20:57and extracurricular responsibilities. Acquired a lot of discipline, time management,
- 21:02and sacrifice at w c HS. He also earned national
- 21:07certification in phlebotomy through the district's partnership with Marion County
- 21:12Area Technic Technology Center at e CTC. Who was a
- 21:16member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He plans
- 21:20to attend the University of Kentucky to study health science
- 21:23and pursue a career as a physical therapist. My long
- 21:27term goal is to earn my doctorate and physical therapy,
- 21:30he says. I want to help people recover, regain independence,
- 21:34and improve their quality of life, making a positive difference
- 21:38in others lives every day. Taylor is the son of
- 21:41Adam and Angela Worthington. Madeline Mackin, a junior, earned an
- 21:48Associate of Arts from ECTC. I decided to work toward
- 21:52this degree to challenge myself and get ahead on my
- 21:54education and to take advantage of the opportunity to earn
- 21:58college credit while saving money, she sas said This schedule
- 22:01required strong time management, as many assignment deadlines often overlapped.
- 22:06Madeleine took courses not only through e c TC, but
- 22:09also through Kentucky State University and Murray State. Adjusting to
- 22:14the different expectations of multiple universities and professors was a
- 22:18major challenge, but it helped me become adaptable, organized, and
- 22:22prepared for future academic success. When she finishes high school,
- 22:26she plans to further her education at the University of
- 22:29Kentucky and go into dentistry. She is the daughter of
- 22:33Jeremy and Kim Mackin. Cayden Lewis, also a junior, earned
- 22:38an Associate of Arts at e CTC. I took classes
- 22:42based on what I would need for my degree. I
- 22:44want to be a speech language pathologist for nice U,
- 22:47she said. The workload was the right amount. At times
- 22:51I thought it would never end, but I looked at
- 22:53the bright side and continued working for what I wanted.
- 22:56Cayden is the daughter of nicole Ma Maupin and Matthew Lewis.
- 23:02All right, the story does continue, but we will move
