Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Today we continue the story of the murder of Jamie Faith.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We covered a lot of information in last episode that
- 0:14Speaker 1: is very critical to understanding the full story, so be
- 0:17Speaker 1: sure you go back and listen to part one before
- 0:19Speaker 1: joining us in today's episode, which is in fact part two.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But if you're ready, then let's begin. My name's Ben.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm Nicole, and you're listening to Wicked and Grim, a
- 0:31Speaker 2: true crime podcast.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Listener discretion is advised.
- 1:03Speaker 1: It's October 16th today, which means it is officially over
- 1:07Speaker 1: halfway through October.
- 1:10Speaker 2: That is true.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Halloween is almost here. It is upon us. Dun, dun, dun.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You're not excited at all.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Not at all, no. We have our photo shoot lined
- 1:21Speaker 1: up here coming up soon.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm excited for that. That's always so fun.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so if you don't know, we do an annual
- 1:27Speaker 1: Halloween photo shoot every year. We do some cool stuff.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We've done some pretty interesting ones in the past, including
- 1:33Speaker 1: me turning into a zombie and Nicole bashing my brains in.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Last year, we were a 1920s murderous couple burying a
- 1:42Speaker 1: body in the woods. It was great. That's my personal
- 1:45Speaker 1: favorite photo shoot so far, honestly.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think mine was the skeleton.
- 1:49Speaker 1: The skeleton onesies?
- 1:50Speaker 2: We just got to wear, yeah, skeleton onesies. It was
- 1:52Speaker 2: so cozy and the dogs were part of it too.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's what made it though. The dogs had the skeleton bandanas.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So we were just a skeleton family.
- 2:00Speaker 2: It was super cute.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It was good. That photo shoot was super quick too,
- 2:03Speaker 1: which was really nice.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It was easy. It was act a fool and get
- 2:07Speaker 1: photos done.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Like, yeah, it was the quickest one for sure. Though
- 2:11Speaker 1: to be fair- I have a feeling this year's photos
- 2:15Speaker 1: might be even quicker. Yeah. Because we don't have to
- 2:18Speaker 1: do a whole lot.
- 2:19Speaker 2: There's not a lot to them. I thought we were
- 2:21Speaker 2: giving more hints.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oh, no, that's all I'm saying.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I mean, we just basically got to stand there and
- 2:26Speaker 1: get our photo taken. That's about it. The costumes are cool.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The premise is really cool. But I mean, that's it. Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well, in due time, everyone will know.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The smirk on your face right now is massive. Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You're just like, they don't know, but I know.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It's a secret.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's going to be good. But I think we should
- 2:45Speaker 1: continue with the part two instead of talking too much
- 2:48Speaker 1: prior to this episode begins. Because, hey, we have a
- 2:51Speaker 1: part two today.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Everyone's antsy pansy to see what happened or is happening.
- 2:56Speaker 1: How this plays out. So do you want me to
- 2:58Speaker 1: give you the whole recap breakdown from part one?
- 3:01Speaker 2: That would be lovely.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Okay. So in part one of Jamie Faith's story. We
- 3:06Speaker 1: traveled to Dallas, Texas, where on the morning of October 9th, 2020,
- 3:10Speaker 1: the 49-year-old American Airlines executive was brutally murdered while walking
- 3:15Speaker 1: his dog with his wife. A masked gunman approached the
- 3:19Speaker 1: couple from behind, shooting Jamie a total of seven times
- 3:23Speaker 1: before attacking his wife, Jennifer, binding her wrists with duct
- 3:26Speaker 1: tape and fleeing in a black Nissan Titan pickup truck. Now,
- 3:31Speaker 1: The shocking attack left a quiet neighborhood absolutely terrified in
- 3:35Speaker 1: its wake. There was a family that was devastated, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: investigators were struggling to understand why anyone would want Jamie dead.
- 3:43Speaker 1: In the weeks that followed, his wife, Jennifer, became the
- 3:47Speaker 1: grieving face of the investigation, appearing in TV news interviews
- 3:51Speaker 1: and pleading for public's help to identify her husband's killer.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Friends and neighbors rallied around her and their daughter, Amber.
- 3:58Speaker 1: organizing meals, offering emotional support, and raising more than $ 60, 000
- 4:02Speaker 1: through a GoFundMe campaign. Meanwhile, detectives struggled to make sense
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the evidence, particularly the excessive number of gunshot wounds
- 4:11Speaker 1: and the suspicious figure captured on surveillance footage near the
- 4:15Speaker 1: Faith home only hours before the murder. But the investigation
- 4:19Speaker 1: took an unexpected turn when detectives examined Jennifer's cell phone
- 4:23Speaker 1: and discovered that she had been involved in an emotional
- 4:26Speaker 1: affair with a former boyfriend named named Darren Lopez. Now,
- 4:29Speaker 1: Darren was a retired Special Forces soldier living approximately 650
- 4:34Speaker 1: miles away in Tennessee. An investigator soon learned that he
- 4:37Speaker 1: owned a black Nissan Titan pickup truck matching the description
- 4:41Speaker 1: of the killer's vehicle, even down to a white T
- 4:44Speaker 1: decal on it. And yes, I said in part one, decal,
- 4:48Speaker 1: we're Canadian, not decal. We get it. We get the dispute.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Don't worry. But we're committed. It's decal. Now, as detectives
- 4:55Speaker 1: dug deeper, they discovered that Jennifer and Darren had exchanged
- 4:59Speaker 1: an astonishing number of text messages in the months surrounding
- 5:02Speaker 1: Jamie's death. Yet, despite communicating almost constantly, their messages had
- 5:08Speaker 1: abruptly stopped on the afternoon of October 8th, only to
- 5:11Speaker 1: resume the evening after that Jamie was murdered. For approximately
- 5:15Speaker 1: 28 hours, the two had gone completely silent, and somewhere
- 5:18Speaker 1: within that unexplained gap, Jamie Faith had been killed. And
- 5:25Speaker 1: that's where we left off. The authorities were just investigating
- 5:29Speaker 1: Darren and they did some aerial surveillance and they found
- 5:32Speaker 1: that white deckle on the pickup truck on his property.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Such a wild ride.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Exactly. And there's this gap that they're just like, well,
- 5:41Speaker 1: why aren't they talking then? They talked so much with
- 5:44Speaker 1: hundreds of daily messages every other day, but not that day.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I remember feeling like such a bitch too because I
- 5:51Speaker 2: was like suspicious of Jennifer. But you hadn't said anything
- 5:56Speaker 2: bad yet. And then all of a sudden it came,
- 5:58Speaker 2: some stuff came out, some dirt came out.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Some dirt definitely came out. And I have a sneaky
- 6:04Speaker 1: suspicion that your opinion of Jennifer may change in today's episode.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But when I say change, I don't mean you're going
- 6:13Speaker 1: to change your opinion. I just think your opinion is
- 6:16Speaker 1: going to get stronger.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Holy shit.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Okay. Well, if I wasn't ready, I sure am now.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Okay. Well, let's continue. So with Darren Rubin Lopez now
- 6:27Speaker 1: connected to a pickup truck resembling the vehicle seen leaving
- 6:30Speaker 1: Jamie's murder scene, investigators turned their attention to establishing his
- 6:34Speaker 1: whereabouts on October 8th and 9th in the year of 2020.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Now the interruption in his communication with Jennifer was certainly
- 6:42Speaker 1: suspicious to say the least, but detectives needed more than
- 6:45Speaker 1: just phone records showing that the two had stopped exchanging messages.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So they began examining Darren's financial transactions. They examined his
- 6:54Speaker 1: cell phone location data, navigation history, and even security recordings
- 6:58Speaker 1: from businesses along the route between Tennessee and Texas that
- 7:01Speaker 1: he would have been traveling. Now together, these records allowed
- 7:04Speaker 1: investigators to reconstruct much of the journey that he had
- 7:08Speaker 1: made during the hours surrounding Jamie's death. The financial records
- 7:12Speaker 1: were able to establish that Darren had clearly been preparing
- 7:15Speaker 1: his truck for some sort of travel shortly before the shooting.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Because on Wednesday, October 7th, he visited a Valovine Service
- 7:24Speaker 1: Center in Dixon, Tennessee, which does like stop in oil
- 7:27Speaker 1: changes and such. There was a transaction for $ 133. 69 that
- 7:33Speaker 1: was recorded there. The following afternoon, Thursday, October 8th, his
- 7:38Speaker 1: account showed purchases at a Huck's convenience store near his
- 7:42Speaker 1: home as well. Then at approximately 1.42 p.m. and 1.44 p.m.,
- 7:45Speaker 1: two transactions were recorded for $ 100 and $ 21. 75. These purchases
- 7:53Speaker 1: occurred shortly after his communication with Jennifer stopped at 1.07pm.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Then approximately at 2.01pm, Darren's phone had been used to
- 8:03Speaker 1: obtain Google Map directions directly to Jamie and Jennifer's residence
- 8:08Speaker 1: in South Waverly Drive in Dallas. Meaning that these transactions
- 8:13Speaker 1: and the timeline shows he was preparing to hit the road.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Investigators followed the electronic trail westward through Tennessee and into Arkansas.
- 8:24Speaker 1: At approximately 4.51 p.m., Darren's financial records placed him at
- 8:29Speaker 1: a pilot travel center near West Memphis, Arkansas, where he
- 8:33Speaker 1: purchased items that included snacks, energy drinks, and even DVDs.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Surveillance footage from the location showed a man matching Darren's
- 8:41Speaker 1: appearance wearing a blue surgical mask and the black Nissan
- 8:45Speaker 1: Titan wearing Well, it was also visible, including the distinctive
- 8:49Speaker 1: white T-deckle on its rear window. Now, I do want
- 8:53Speaker 1: to clarify with this blue surgical mask, you have to
- 8:55Speaker 1: remember this is 2020. This is peak COVID-19 era. So
- 8:59Speaker 1: him walking through a convenience store with a surgical mask
- 9:02Speaker 1: is completely normal.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, probably the only way, like you had to, I bet.
- 9:07Speaker 3: 100%.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, further transactions included a $ 100 ATM withdrawal at
- 9:13Speaker 1: approximately 5.02 p.m. and a fuel purchase of $ 51 at
- 9:18Speaker 1: a nearby Flying Jays around 5.09 p.m. These records were
- 9:22Speaker 1: essential because they connected Darren directly to his vehicle and
- 9:26Speaker 1: his electronic devices to the route towards Dallas, where Jamie
- 9:31Speaker 1: was murdered. Now, from there, the journey continued southwards towards Texas,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and investigators examined cell phone connections and navigation activity to
- 9:40Speaker 1: continue to establish when Darren's phone was active and where
- 9:44Speaker 1: it had been used. And during the early morning hours
- 9:47Speaker 1: of Friday, October 9th, the device recorded activity consistent with
- 9:52Speaker 1: his arrival in Dallas. At approximately 2.19 a.m., location information
- 9:57Speaker 1: placed it near the Faith residence. on South Waverly Drive,
- 10:02Speaker 1: which is especially significant because the family security camera had
- 10:07Speaker 1: recorded a man moving around the vacant neighboring property at
- 10:11Speaker 1: about 2.30 a.m., and the clothing, mask, and general appearance
- 10:16Speaker 1: of the figure were consistent with the man witnessed on
- 10:19Speaker 1: the camera not only in that residence, but also in
- 10:24Speaker 1: the surveillance footage from Darren traveling all this route, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: also the individual who is seen shooting Jamie at the scene.
- 10:32Speaker 2: This is just, this just feels so disappointing to me. Yeah? Like,
- 10:37Speaker 2: I don't know this case. I just, because they seem
- 10:41Speaker 2: so happy and so perfect, you know, how you described
- 10:44Speaker 2: them at the beginning?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And I guess sometimes what is on- on the surface
- 10:50Speaker 2: isn't actually what is.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Well, I think that's something that we deal with a
- 10:54Speaker 1: lot in today's age, especially with social media.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You don't understand what's going on behind the scenes or
- 11:00Speaker 1: below the surface of any sort of relationship or connection.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Only those actually present within it really fully understand.
- 11:06Speaker 2: You only put out the good stuff.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Exactly. And if I'm honest, I have to say regarding
- 11:14Speaker 1: this episode, I don't even think Everyone involved in this
- 11:17Speaker 1: one knew it was going on below the surface because
- 11:20Speaker 1: Jamie certainly had no clue.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Holy frig. Okay.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But I'm getting ahead of myself. Now, whoever had been
- 11:28Speaker 1: captured on the security footage had clearly arrived in the
- 11:31Speaker 1: neighborhood several hours before Jamie and Jennifer left to walk
- 11:35Speaker 1: their dog that morning. So detectives examined the possibility that
- 11:38Speaker 1: the individual had positioned himself near the vacant property and
- 11:42Speaker 1: remained there until the couple emerged. shortly after 7.30 a.m. Now,
- 11:47Speaker 1: the footage, unfortunately, didn't show the entire five-hour period, though,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and investigators couldn't determine every movement the person had made
- 11:55Speaker 1: while they were waiting. What they did have was the
- 11:58Speaker 1: combination of Darren's location records, the distinctive vehicle, the security footage,
- 12:03Speaker 1: him being similarly dressed to the individual at the murder scene,
- 12:06Speaker 1: all of this, that combined some very significant evidence. All
- 12:10Speaker 1: in all, let's just say it was... It was very
- 12:14Speaker 1: difficult to explain it all as a coincidence. Now, investigators
- 12:18Speaker 1: also traced Darren's return towards Tennessee on October 9th. His
- 12:23Speaker 1: cell phone connected with cellular towers along the eastbound Interstate
- 12:26Speaker 1: 40 corridor during the afternoon, with one connection at around 4.32 p.m.,
- 12:32Speaker 1: placing the device approximately 62 miles from his home. Another
- 12:37Speaker 1: connection at approximately 5.11 p.m. placed it roughly 20 miles
- 12:42Speaker 1: of Cumberland Furnace. Then, at 5.18pm, Darren resumed texting Jennifer,
- 12:47Speaker 1: ending the unusually long interruption in their communications. Jennifer replied,
- 12:52Speaker 1: at 5.41pm, and the two exchanged approximately 50 messages that evening.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Financial records also showed a purchase at Huck's, which is a,
- 13:03Speaker 1: as I mentioned already, convenience store in Dixon, at approximately 10.21pm,
- 13:08Speaker 1: confirming that Darren had returned to the area where he lived. Now,
- 13:11Speaker 1: by combining the travel records with the evidence collected in Dallas,
- 13:15Speaker 1: investigators had established an extremely compelling timeline. Darren had traveled
- 13:20Speaker 1: towards Texas immediately after his communications with Jennifer stopped, arriving
- 13:25Speaker 1: near her home during the early morning hours of October
- 13:27Speaker 1: 9th and returned to Tennessee before their regular texting resumed.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And the same black Nissan Titan associated with him matched
- 13:35Speaker 1: the vehicle scene leaving the murder scene. But nevertheless, detectives
- 13:39Speaker 1: still needed to determine whether Jennifer knew anything about his
- 13:43Speaker 1: journey over this way and whether the two had discussed
- 13:46Speaker 1: Jamie's murder before or after the fact. So the investigators
- 13:50Speaker 1: continued quietly through November and into December with their work.
- 13:55Speaker 1: On December 2nd, Jennifer appeared in a TV interview discussing
- 13:59Speaker 1: the unidentified pickup truck and its white T-deckle, which she
- 14:04Speaker 1: continued to describe as resembling a Texas Rangers emblem. Then
- 14:09Speaker 1: the following day on December 3rd, investigators recovered communication showing
- 14:13Speaker 1: that she sent Darren a link to the interview and
- 14:17Speaker 1: urged him to remove that decal from his truck.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. This bitch.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I'll just let you continue. But like she's accepting. has
- 14:31Speaker 2: been accepting like go fund me and like meals and shit. Oh, okay.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So Jennifer explained that she had woke up feeling panicked
- 14:40Speaker 1: and would feel considerably better if he had removed the
- 14:43Speaker 1: deckle and thoroughly clean that window right away. Darren though
- 14:47Speaker 1: was initially reluctant to do so because his daughter might
- 14:49Speaker 1: notice the change, but Jennifer continued pressing him to act quickly.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Surveillance photos taken from the air on December 4th over
- 14:59Speaker 1: his property were showed that the sticker remained in its place.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But then on December 6th, Darren informed Jennifer that it
- 15:06Speaker 1: had been removed. She responded enthusiastically by feeling relieved and
- 15:11Speaker 1: thanked him for doing it. And by December 8th, surveillance
- 15:14Speaker 1: confirmed that that distinctive white T-deckle was gone from the truck.
- 15:19Speaker 1: The removal mattered a lot because investigators had been searching
- 15:23Speaker 1: for precisely that identifying feature, And Jennifer's messages demonstrated she
- 15:27Speaker 1: was privately encouraging Darren to alter the appearance of his
- 15:32Speaker 1: vehicle while it was being searched for publicly, as it's
- 15:35Speaker 1: associated with the killer of her husband. Ultimately, though, it
- 15:40Speaker 1: also demonstrated guilt and a cover-up with Jennifer being involved.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Detectives now had substantial reason to suspect both individuals were responsible.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Now on January 7th, authorities obtained a rest warrant for
- 15:55Speaker 1: Darren while federal agents prepared to search his property in
- 15:59Speaker 1: Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee. The operation was coordinated with Dallas investigators
- 16:05Speaker 1: who also wanted another opportunity to question Jennifer without giving
- 16:09Speaker 1: her advance warning that Darren was about to be taken
- 16:11Speaker 1: into custody. So on Sunday, January 10th, Detective Chris Walton
- 16:16Speaker 1: contacted Jennifer and asked her to come to the Dallas
- 16:19Speaker 1: police headquarters for an interview the following day. Then shortly
- 16:23Speaker 1: after at approximately 5 50 PM, Jennifer informed Darren about
- 16:28Speaker 1: this request at 6 PM. She instructed him not to
- 16:32Speaker 1: text her Monday because she intended to delete their messages
- 16:35Speaker 1: and factory reset her phone clearly to try and erase evidence.
- 16:41Speaker 1: 15 minutes later, she provided a specific explanation. They could
- 16:46Speaker 1: both used if questioned Darren was an old friend going
- 16:50Speaker 1: through a difficult divorce. Jennifer had been helping him financially
- 16:53Speaker 1: and supporting him with his daughters. She emphasized that they
- 16:57Speaker 1: needed matching explanations to which Darren responded, quote, good idea.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I like it. End quote. And on Monday, January 11th,
- 17:06Speaker 1: agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives,
- 17:10Speaker 1: or better known as ATF, were conducting surveillance along Highway
- 17:15Speaker 1: 48 in Dixon County, Tennessee, when they spotted a silver
- 17:18Speaker 1: 2006 Toyota Scion. It was Darren's daughter, Mackenzie Lopez. She
- 17:24Speaker 1: was driving, and Darren was sitting in the front passenger seat.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Agents followed the vehicle into Dixon and approached after Darren
- 17:32Speaker 1: exited the vehicle. An ATF Special Agent Jackson Reeves took
- 17:36Speaker 1: him into custody and asked whether he was carrying any weapons.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Darren replied that he had a loaded. 45 caliber handgun
- 17:43Speaker 1: inside a bag in the Scion, with a cartridge already chambered.
- 17:48Speaker 1: A subsequent search recovered the pistol, ammunition, military patches, Jennifer's
- 17:53Speaker 1: credit cards, a blue surgical mask, and Darren's Samsung Galaxy
- 17:57Speaker 1: cell phone. Now, the agents also searched Darren's residence in
- 18:00Speaker 1: Cumberland Furnace, where they discovered a large FedEx box on
- 18:04Speaker 1: the porch addressed from Jennifer to Darren. And inside the
- 18:08Speaker 1: house was an unopened Samsung television that had been shipped
- 18:12Speaker 1: directly to him as well. But more importantly, investigators located
- 18:16Speaker 1: a tan satchel, containing a second handgun, an unopened can
- 18:21Speaker 1: of Red Bull, and two DVDs. The firearms that they found, well,
- 18:27Speaker 1: it was a Smith & Wesson Model 4506, a. 45
- 18:31Speaker 1: caliber semi-automatic pistol, which was silver in color, and consistent
- 18:35Speaker 1: with Jennifer's description of the gun used to shoot Jamie.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The drink and DVDs also appeared to match purchases Darren
- 18:43Speaker 1: had made at the Pilot Travel Center in West Memphis, Arkansas.
- 18:47Speaker 1: while driving towards Dallas on October 8th. Now, the gun
- 18:50Speaker 1: became one of the investigation's most significant discoveries, because not
- 18:55Speaker 1: only did it match the silver color, but forensic testing
- 18:58Speaker 1: soon identified Jamie's blood was present on the weapon, while
- 19:03Speaker 1: ballistic comparisons linked the firearm directly to the cartridge casings
- 19:08Speaker 1: recovered from South Waverly Drive. Investigators used the National Integrated
- 19:13Speaker 1: Ballistics Information Network to support that identification. The gun was
- 19:18Speaker 1: also traced through federal firearms records to a dealer in Belgium,
- 19:22Speaker 1: although its ownership history is not established exactly why Darren
- 19:26Speaker 1: was in possession of it. But with Jamie's blood in
- 19:30Speaker 1: the handgun and its connection to the shooting, detectives now
- 19:33Speaker 1: had an extremely powerful piece of physical evidence tying Darren
- 19:37Speaker 1: directly to the murder.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Unbelievable. Okay, I went from being like disappointed to just,
- 19:44Speaker 2: I'm just like flat out disgusted now.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Fair enough. I mean, he's had this murder weapon sitting
- 19:49Speaker 1: here with... remnants of the blood on it, not only
- 19:52Speaker 1: in his possession, but also now in his daughter's vehicle
- 19:56Speaker 1: for months.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:59Speaker 1: What, why, what is he doing?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Well, obviously they're both idiots, really.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Clearly.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Clearly. Now, while agents searched his property in Tennessee, Jennifer
- 20:09Speaker 1: was questioned in Dallas at the police headquarters by Detective
- 20:12Speaker 1: Walton and ATF Special Agent Paul Williams. During the recorded interview,
- 20:17Speaker 1: Jennifer acknowledged that she had been communicating with Darren Daly,
- 20:20Speaker 1: but she initially denied any sort of inappropriate relationship with him.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But when Detective Walton confronted her with evidence of their
- 20:28Speaker 1: romantic exchanges, she admitted they had discussed rekindling old feelings,
- 20:33Speaker 1: but insisted... that she had ended that possibility. She maintained
- 20:38Speaker 1: that Jamie knew about the situation and that their marriage
- 20:40Speaker 1: remained a loving one. Then as Detective Walton presented information
- 20:45Speaker 1: about the Nissan Titan, Darren's movements, and the thousands of
- 20:49Speaker 1: messages exchanged between them, Jennifer simply denied knowing who had
- 20:53Speaker 1: killed her husband at all or any of this. Like, sure, okay,
- 20:56Speaker 1: maybe there's links, whatever. I know nothing is kind of
- 20:58Speaker 1: her attitude. Not involved, not me, no way. The detective
- 21:03Speaker 1: though also questioned why so many communications were conveniently missing
- 21:06Speaker 1: from Jennifer's phone. Now she said that she routinely deleted
- 21:10Speaker 1: messages to free up storage space, including even conversations with Jamie.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Detective Walton challenged that explanation though and asked why someone
- 21:18Speaker 1: who communicated with Darren so frequently would erase so much
- 21:22Speaker 1: of their correspondence. But Jennifer wasn't budging. She still maintained
- 21:28Speaker 1: that their contact was simply part of a close friendship.
- 21:32Speaker 1: and nothing more. Then when Detective Walton revealed that Darren
- 21:37Speaker 1: was actually already in custody, she acted shocked and continued
- 21:42Speaker 1: insisting she had no knowledge of his involvement in Jamie's
- 21:45Speaker 1: murder whatsoever, and ultimately the interview ended without Jennifer admitting
- 21:50Speaker 1: responsibility for Jamie's murder, and she was allowed to leave.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Now investigators continued examining the evidence recovered from Darren's phones,
- 22:01Speaker 1: A federal search warrant for it was obtained on January 14th,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and on approximately January 21st, a Homeland Security Investigations forensic
- 22:09Speaker 1: specialist processed the device using Celebrate software. They recovered messages
- 22:15Speaker 1: absent from Jamie's phone, including conversations about deleting correspondence and
- 22:19Speaker 1: avoiding police's attention. On November 30th, they found that Darren
- 22:24Speaker 1: had told Jennifer that he reset his phone and believed
- 22:27Speaker 1: the old messages were completely erased. Her response was, quote,
- 22:31Speaker 1: Big smile over here at that, end quote. Other messages
- 22:37Speaker 1: documented their romantic involvement too. They also documented the removal
- 22:41Speaker 1: of the tea deckle on the truck and Jennifer's instructions
- 22:45Speaker 1: about what Darren should tell investigators. Financial evidence provided another
- 22:49Speaker 1: important part of the investigation too. See, Darren's mortgage was
- 22:54Speaker 1: at least 120 days overdue with approximately $ 38, 000 overdue. outstanding
- 23:00Speaker 1: and foreclosure proceedings had already initiated. His water service had
- 23:05Speaker 1: been disconnected for non-payment in October of 2020, and investigators
- 23:09Speaker 1: also learned that Jennifer was the beneficiary of Jamie's approximately $ 629, 000
- 23:17Speaker 1: life insurance policy, although the claim had not yet been
- 23:20Speaker 1: paid out. Records from the community GoFundMe showed withdrawals of $ 30, 307. 71
- 23:24Speaker 1: on October 13th, then $ 7, 649. 61 on October 14th, and $ 6, 082. 92
- 23:36Speaker 1: on October 15th. Additional evidence also documented Jennifer providing Darren
- 23:42Speaker 1: with money, credit cards, travel expenses, and gifts as well.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Then on January 22nd, Darren was federally charged with transporting
- 23:51Speaker 1: a firearm across state lines with the intent to commit murder.
- 23:56Speaker 1: He was extradited to Dallas on February 5th. to face
- 23:59Speaker 1: the state murder charge. Investigators, meanwhile, continued building their case
- 24:04Speaker 1: against Jennifer, focusing particularly on the deliberate destruction of communications
- 24:09Speaker 1: and her effort to conceal Darren's connection to the shooting.
- 24:13Speaker 1: On February 24th, 2021, Jennifer was also arrested and charged
- 24:18Speaker 1: with obstruction of justice. Following her arrest, investigators continued examining
- 24:24Speaker 1: the electronic evidence recovered during their searches of the Faith residence.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Computers and email accounts associated with Jennifer contained extensive correspondence
- 24:33Speaker 1: with Darren, including messages describing serious allegations of abuse involving
- 24:39Speaker 1: her murdered husband. Some emails appeared to have been written
- 24:44Speaker 1: by Jamie herself, while others came from people claiming to
- 24:47Speaker 1: have witnessed his behavior. These messages described a man whose
- 24:52Speaker 1: conduct was completely at odds with the person Jamie's family, friends,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and colleagues all remembered. Detectives began examining these correspondence to
- 25:01Speaker 1: determine whether the allegations were genuine and how they related
- 25:04Speaker 1: to Darren's decision to travel to Dallas. Now, these communications
- 25:09Speaker 1: took investigators all the way back to March 17th of 2020,
- 25:13Speaker 1: when Darren reconnected with Jennifer through LinkedIn after approximately 27
- 25:18Speaker 1: years apart. Their conversations initially centered on their shared history,
- 25:23Speaker 1: including their teenage relationship, military service, marriages, and families. Darren, though,
- 25:29Speaker 1: expressed regret in those conversations about the relationship ending, and
- 25:33Speaker 1: the two began discussing the possibility of beginning to do
- 25:38Speaker 1: it all over again. Their exchanges from there quickly became romantic,
- 25:43Speaker 1: with Jennifer calling Darren her angel, and both expressing affection
- 25:48Speaker 1: for one another quite consistently. Then, by May 2nd, Darren
- 25:53Speaker 1: had even outlined a five-year plan for their future together,
- 25:56Speaker 1: allowing time for his young daughters to finish school even.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Jennifer had even mentioned his plan to her friend, Tina Spring,
- 26:06Speaker 1: showing just how serious she was actually considering this relationship
- 26:10Speaker 1: to be. It was within weeks of their reconnection that
- 26:13Speaker 1: Jennifer began telling Darren that her marriage to Jamie, though,
- 26:17Speaker 1: was troubled. It started out with just dissatisfaction, but it
- 26:23Speaker 1: quickly developed into allegations that Jamie had was physically violent
- 26:27Speaker 1: and controlling. Jennifer began to tell Darren Jamie was regularly
- 26:33Speaker 1: monitoring her communications, that he threatened her, and became increasingly
- 26:37Speaker 1: violent whenever he discovered she was speaking with another man.
- 26:41Speaker 1: You see, according to Jennifer, Jamie would beat her badly
- 26:45Speaker 1: enough to leave extensive bruising across her body, sometimes forcing
- 26:49Speaker 1: her to spend days recovering from these injuries. She also alleged...
- 26:54Speaker 1: that he deliberately restrained her, tied her up, and subject
- 26:58Speaker 1: her to violent sexual assault and rape as punishment for
- 27:03Speaker 1: maintaining contact with Darren. But Jennifer's allegations went considerably farther
- 27:09Speaker 1: than that. She claimed Jamie sometimes invited other men over
- 27:14Speaker 1: to participate in these assaults too, including one of his
- 27:17Speaker 1: longtime friends, Jeremy Gibler. According to her alleged accounts, Jamie
- 27:22Speaker 1: would arrange for multiple men to sexually assault her, sometimes
- 27:26Speaker 1: describing these attacks as a way of humiliating and controlling her.
- 27:31Speaker 1: She alleged that Jamie also burned her, threatened to have
- 27:35Speaker 1: her assaulted by other strangers, and subjected her to increasingly
- 27:38Speaker 1: brutal treatment that left her terrified of what he might
- 27:42Speaker 1: do next. One of the most disturbing stories Jennifer told
- 27:47Speaker 1: involved the hot tub at the Faith residence. She claimed
- 27:52Speaker 1: Jamie held her underwater during a sexual assault incident until
- 27:56Speaker 1: she lost her consciousness, and that he had actually subsequently
- 28:00Speaker 1: had to perform CPR to revive her. Jennifer presented this
- 28:04Speaker 1: incident as evidence that her husband was becoming so violent
- 28:08Speaker 1: that he might eventually kill her. She also described threats
- 28:12Speaker 1: of another particularly severe assault involving other several men, leaving
- 28:16Speaker 1: Darren increasingly concerned that Jennifer's life was in fact in
- 28:20Speaker 1: immediate danger. Jennifer even strengthened these stories by providing photos
- 28:26Speaker 1: that documented her injuries to Darren. Some depicted extensive bruising
- 28:31Speaker 1: and facial injuries, while others showed burns and additional physical trauma,
- 28:36Speaker 1: even sexual. Now, investigators eventually established that these photos that
- 28:41Speaker 1: she provided did not document abuse by Jamie. In fact,
- 28:45Speaker 1: several were images that were not even of Jennifer herself.
- 28:47Speaker 1: They were simply photos that she obtained off the internet,
- 28:50Speaker 1: while others showed injuries that she had sustained, but they
- 28:54Speaker 1: were of injuries from a vehicle accident in 2012, approximately
- 28:58Speaker 1: eight years before the murder of her husband. Additional images
- 29:03Speaker 1: allegedly depicted rape, while they were also identified as material
- 29:07Speaker 1: that was taken from different porno productions. Investigators also discovered
- 29:13Speaker 1: that Darren and had received threatening messages from accounts appearing
- 29:17Speaker 1: to belong to Jamie. These communications claimed that Jamie knew
- 29:21Speaker 1: about the relationship they were having, and he was deliberately
- 29:25Speaker 1: punishing Jennifer because of it. Some described her as being restrained,
- 29:29Speaker 1: of course, others threatened or violently raped, sexual assault, etc.
- 29:33Speaker 1: But then they even taunted Darren about his inability to
- 29:38Speaker 1: intervene from Tennessee. even describing the fake assaults involving other men.
- 29:44Speaker 1: One message even threatened further violence over an upcoming weekend,
- 29:49Speaker 1: while another continued to mock Darren for being unable to
- 29:52Speaker 1: prevent it. Ultimately, Darren believed he was receiving messages from
- 29:57Speaker 1: an abusive husband who who was using Jennifer's suffering to
- 30:01Speaker 1: torment him. However, investigators found no evidence that Jamie had
- 30:07Speaker 1: written these emails or ever communicated with Darren in this
- 30:10Speaker 1: manner at all. Instead, it seems that Jennifer was the
- 30:15Speaker 1: one who was sending these messages.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Oh, she is like freaking batshit crazy.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yes, she is.
- 30:23Speaker 2: I was having trouble, even when you started, I was like, well,
- 30:25Speaker 2: I guess that could have been happening, but I was
- 30:27Speaker 2: having a little bit of trouble believing it. But holy shit,
- 30:32Speaker 2: she is nuts.
- 30:34Speaker 1: She's manipulating Darren to do what she wants, to get
- 30:38Speaker 1: what she wants, to murder her own husband.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Like, how dare you?
- 30:43Speaker 1: Wow. Now, another email account appeared to belong to Jennifer's
- 30:48Speaker 1: former colleague and friend, Rob Schmidt. And on May 13th,
- 30:52Speaker 1: Darren sent a message seeking Rob's assistance, explaining that Jennifer
- 30:56Speaker 1: was allegedly being subject to physical and sexual violence. Correspondents
- 31:01Speaker 1: from the account subsequently reinforced the allegations, describing injuries and
- 31:05Speaker 1: encouraged Darren to actually intervene with the situation. And during
- 31:09Speaker 1: a May exchange, Darren expressed that he would not feel
- 31:12Speaker 1: comfortable until Jennifer was away from Jamie or he was
- 31:17Speaker 1: permitted to shoot him. A response from the supposed friend
- 31:21Speaker 1: encouraged the idea and even offered a provided alibi. For Darren,
- 31:26Speaker 1: these communications, well, it provided an independent confirmation of all
- 31:31Speaker 1: of this from someone who knew Jennifer personally. Now, detectives
- 31:36Speaker 1: located the real Rob Schmidt and questioned him about these messages.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Rob denied writing the emails attributed to him and said
- 31:42Speaker 1: who he had. I mean, he had never done this
- 31:44Speaker 1: sort of communication. He'd never communicated with Darren at all.
- 31:48Speaker 1: So investigators examined information associated with the email accounts and
- 31:52Speaker 1: established that the email addresses impersonating Rob and Jamie had
- 31:57Speaker 1: been created specifically for the correspondence and were subsequently deleted
- 32:01Speaker 1: shortly after Jamie's murder as well. And further examination of
- 32:05Speaker 1: Jennifer's electronic devices connected her directly to these accounts, meaning
- 32:11Speaker 1: she was the one behind them all. So rather than
- 32:15Speaker 1: communicating with Jamie or receiving independent confirmation from Rob, Darren
- 32:19Speaker 1: had been corresponding with Jennifer while she was impersonating both men. Now,
- 32:26Speaker 1: regarding the accusation involving Jeremy Gibbler, a longtime friend of
- 32:29Speaker 1: Jamie who had actually helped bring Jamie and Jennifer together
- 32:32Speaker 1: in the first place, Jennifer had implicated Jeremy in the
- 32:35Speaker 1: supposed incidents of group rape, claiming that he participated alongside
- 32:40Speaker 1: Jamie and other men. When investigators contacted Jeremy, he was
- 32:45Speaker 1: shocked and flat out denied these allegations. Not only that,
- 32:48Speaker 1: but Jeremy lived in Arizona, hundreds of miles from Dallas,
- 32:53Speaker 1: and investigators examined his whereabouts during the period in questioning
- 32:57Speaker 1: and found no evidence supporting Jennifer's allegations or placing him
- 33:01Speaker 1: at the supposed site of these incidents. Investigators also noted
- 33:05Speaker 1: that Jeremy remained part of the private group messages too,
- 33:08Speaker 1: the one that was receiving Jennifer's updates about Jamie's murder,
- 33:12Speaker 1: despite her privately portraying him to Darren as someone she feared. Now,
- 33:16Speaker 1: all of this revealed just how Jennifer had constructed several
- 33:20Speaker 1: overlapping accounts of the same imaginary abuse, presenting herself as
- 33:25Speaker 1: a frightened victim, impersonating Jamie as a violent aggressor, and
- 33:31Speaker 1: using supposed witnesses to reinforce her claims and all to
- 33:35Speaker 1: manipulate Darren. And through it all, she repeatedly discouraged efforts
- 33:41Speaker 1: to involve police, suggesting that intervention was would endanger her
- 33:45Speaker 1: further or devastate her daughter, Amber. The evidence established that
- 33:50Speaker 1: Jennifer had fabricated all of these allegations, but investigators still
- 33:55Speaker 1: needed to determine precisely what she had asked Darren to
- 33:58Speaker 1: do and how much planning had occurred before October 9th.
- 34:03Speaker 1: So as investigators examined the fabricated emails, they continued to
- 34:06Speaker 1: question Darren too. Darren explained that the stories of abuse
- 34:11Speaker 1: had started within weeks of their reconnection in March of 2020.
- 34:16Speaker 1: He claimed she regularly described violent incidences occurring late at night,
- 34:20Speaker 1: sometimes telling him that Jamie had taken her phone and
- 34:23Speaker 1: was sending threatening messages himself. Darren remembered becoming physically sick
- 34:28Speaker 1: while reading these accounts, and struggled to even sleep at
- 34:31Speaker 1: night because he believed Jennifer was being seriously harmed. According
- 34:36Speaker 1: to his statements, he repeatedly encouraged her to go contact
- 34:41Speaker 1: the police or find somewhere somewhere safe to stay. But
- 34:45Speaker 1: she resisted those suggestions, claiming that involving authorities would make
- 34:49Speaker 1: matters worse. The allegations, of course, became increasingly extreme, including
- 34:54Speaker 1: the incidents involving multiple men, rape, and she claimed Jamie
- 34:57Speaker 1: was threatening further attacks while she had no reliable means
- 35:01Speaker 1: of escaping. Darren told investigators Jennifer eventually began asking about
- 35:06Speaker 1: ways Jamie could be killed. He maintained that these discussions
- 35:10Speaker 1: occurred only during telephone conversations, though, rather than through written messages.
- 35:16Speaker 1: And among the possibilities discussed was poisoning, although Darren claimed
- 35:20Speaker 1: he rejected methods that might endanger or inadvertently hurt others,
- 35:25Speaker 1: specifically Amber. Then as their discussion progressed, Darren began considering
- 35:30Speaker 1: how he could approach Jamie without attracting any sort of attention.
- 35:35Speaker 1: And the COVID-19 pandemic had complicated his planning because Jamie
- 35:39Speaker 1: was spending much of his time working from home. But
- 35:42Speaker 1: Darren explained that Jennifer had described the couple's daily routine,
- 35:46Speaker 1: including the morning walks they took with their dog Maggie.
- 35:49Speaker 1: He knew approximately when they left the house, which route
- 35:52Speaker 1: they normally followed, and according to his account, Jennifer was
- 35:55Speaker 1: well aware that the attack was planned, and it was
- 35:58Speaker 1: planned to occur on that walk. Darren also described their
- 36:02Speaker 1: decision to stop communicating while he traveled to Texas, eliminating
- 36:06Speaker 1: the usual stream of text messages between their phones. Then
- 36:10Speaker 1: on Thursday, October 8th, Darren told Jennifer he was going
- 36:14Speaker 1: to Greg's house and would speak to her on Friday.
- 36:17Speaker 1: But during his interview, he explained that this was a
- 36:20Speaker 1: coded message that indicated he was hitting the road traveling
- 36:24Speaker 1: to Dallas. He also told his daughters he was leaving
- 36:28Speaker 1: on a hunting trip. So after servicing his truck and
- 36:31Speaker 1: purchasing some supplies, Darren drove approximately 650 miles from Tennessee,
- 36:36Speaker 1: reaching the Faith neighborhood during the early morning hours of
- 36:40Speaker 1: October 9th. He then positioned himself around the vacant house
- 36:44Speaker 1: adjoining their property, where the family security camera recorded a
- 36:47Speaker 1: figure at approximately 2.30 a.m. There he remained in the
- 36:51Speaker 1: area until Jamie and Jennifer emerged with Maggie shortly before 7.35 a.m.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Darren described the shooting himself. He said it was a
- 37:02Speaker 1: military-style operation, rescue operation in his mind anyways. He claimed
- 37:08Speaker 1: he believed Jennifer was in immediate danger, that Jamie needed
- 37:12Speaker 1: to be eliminated to protect her. So when the couple
- 37:15Speaker 1: began walking along South Waverly Drive, Darren emerged from the
- 37:18Speaker 1: neighboring property and approached Jamie from behind. He admitted that
- 37:22Speaker 1: he raised his. 45 caliber handgun and fired repeatedly, striking
- 37:27Speaker 1: Jamie seven times. During subsequent interviews, Detective Eric Barnes specifically
- 37:35Speaker 1: questioned Darren about the gunshot wound to Jamie's groin. According
- 37:39Speaker 1: to Detective Barnes, Darren admitted deliberately shooting him there because
- 37:44Speaker 1: of the alleged rape against Jennifer. And Darren said he
- 37:48Speaker 1: wanted Jamie to suffer for what he had done to her.
- 37:53Speaker 2: This is making me feel ill.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not surprised.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I cannot even believe this crazy bitch what she has done.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Right?
- 38:02Speaker 2: Like, Darren was literally convinced that he was... Taking someone
- 38:08Speaker 2: out of this world that was a terrible person when
- 38:11Speaker 2: in reality he was like a freaking saint. Yeah. Because
- 38:14Speaker 2: Jennifer is crazy.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Exactly. He was convinced he was saving someone.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 1: When in reality he was murdering someone in cold blood
- 38:23Speaker 1: because she, as you put it, is a crazy bitch.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And I totally agree. She is.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Just sitting here listening to this is just freaking mind blowing.
- 38:32Speaker 1: The amount of manipulation.
- 38:34Speaker 2: What she's done.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Is nuts.
- 38:35Speaker 2: What she's gone through. Like the lengths that she's gone
- 38:38Speaker 2: through to come up with this fucking story. Yeah. And
- 38:42Speaker 2: like Jeremy too, right? Was the guy's name that she
- 38:46Speaker 2: was like accused of raping.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Her or something? Not only that, Jeremy was the one
- 38:51Speaker 1: responsible for putting Jamie and Jennifer together as a couple.
- 38:56Speaker 2: God.
- 38:56Speaker 1: He's the one who got them together. And then she
- 38:59Speaker 1: turns around and says, oh, he's involved in gang raping me.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Meanwhile, he's probably just sitting at home eating a bowl
- 39:04Speaker 2: of ramen. The police come and knock on the door
- 39:07Speaker 2: and is like, are you raping her? And he's like,
- 39:11Speaker 2: the fuck? As a noodle's falling out of his face. Like,
- 39:14Speaker 2: I just can't. Why the fuck are you specifically ramen?
- 39:16Speaker 2: I don't know. I just can't get that visual out
- 39:20Speaker 2: of my head that someone coming to his door asking
- 39:23Speaker 2: about this shit. And he is just like, the fuck?
- 39:26Speaker 1: I'm i mean yeah that's base i mean i don't
- 39:29Speaker 1: know if that's exactly what happened but that's essentially the
- 39:32Speaker 1: situation yes.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Like i that is i don't know if ramen was
- 39:36Speaker 2: involved but probably not but this just is a visual
- 39:38Speaker 2: in my brain that i just i just i can't
- 39:41Speaker 2: believe actually happened.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Anyway Well, as for the recovered firearm, cartridge casings, blood evidence,
- 39:48Speaker 1: the surveillance recordings, all the evidence that they had, it
- 39:52Speaker 1: supported the reconstruction of Darren's movements and the shooting himself
- 39:55Speaker 1: and what he was admitting. Then after killing Jamie, though,
- 39:59Speaker 1: Darren turned towards Jennifer. He chased her and knocked her down,
- 40:03Speaker 1: bound her wrists with duct tape. He told investigators that
- 40:06Speaker 1: Jennifer had known Jamie would be killed, but she did
- 40:10Speaker 1: not know that he intended to assault her afterwards. This was,
- 40:14Speaker 1: of course, to make it look more realistic. Darren then
- 40:18Speaker 1: left Dallas immediately after the shooting and drove back towards
- 40:21Speaker 1: Cumberland Furnace, where he resumed communicating with Jennifer that evening.
- 40:26Speaker 1: The relationship continued during the following months, with Jennifer sending
- 40:30Speaker 1: affectionate messages, money, gifts, all while publicly appealing for information
- 40:36Speaker 1: about her husband's killer. Now, even after Darren's arrest in
- 40:40Speaker 1: January of 2021, Jennifer continued trying to maintain their relationship.
- 40:46Speaker 1: According to investigators, she tried to arrange for a message
- 40:49Speaker 1: to be passed through a third party directly to him
- 40:52Speaker 1: while he was behind bars. And the message was assuring
- 40:55Speaker 1: Darren that she would always love him and stand by
- 40:57Speaker 1: his side regardless of what happened. Investigators, though, suspected that
- 41:02Speaker 1: Jennifer continued these declarations of love as more manipulation, intending
- 41:07Speaker 1: to discourage Darren from revealing what he knew about Jamie's murder.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Investigators also went back and examined Jennifer's earlier relationships. Her
- 41:16Speaker 1: former husband, Rick Erlaub, said Jennifer had previously described being
- 41:21Speaker 1: abused by her first husband while they were dating. Rick
- 41:26Speaker 1: recalled becoming so angry about the alleged mistreatment that he
- 41:30Speaker 1: actually even considered killing the man, although he never acted
- 41:34Speaker 1: on those thoughts. According to Rick, Jennifer eventually discouraged him
- 41:39Speaker 1: to do so by referring to her daughter, Amber, and
- 41:44Speaker 1: the relationship with her biological father. So clearly, this was
- 41:49Speaker 1: not the first time she was presenting this sort of manipulation.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Holy, that's scary.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Now, regardless, by September 2021, federal prosecutors believe the evidence
- 41:59Speaker 1: established that Jennifer had in fact deliberately manipulated Darren into
- 42:03Speaker 1: murdering Jamie. The financial assistance she provided, fabricated allegations, impersonated emails,
- 42:11Speaker 1: and communications surrounding the killings formed the foundation of the case,
- 42:14Speaker 1: and Jennifer was charged with murder for hire, which was
- 42:18Speaker 1: an offense carrying the possibility of a life sentence or
- 42:21Speaker 1: even the death penalty. Now, on February 7, 2022, Jennifer
- 42:28Speaker 1: Lynn Faith appeared in federal court in Dallas, Texas, accompanied
- 42:32Speaker 1: by her defense attorney, Toby shook. Nearly 16 months had
- 42:37Speaker 1: passed since Jamie was shot in cold blood, but rather
- 42:40Speaker 1: than proceed to trial, she entered a guilty plea to
- 42:44Speaker 1: one count of using interstate commerce in the commission of
- 42:48Speaker 1: murder for hire. Under the agreement, prosecutors would not pursue
- 42:52Speaker 1: the death penalty. They would instead recommend life in prison.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Jennifer also formally acknowledged that Jamie had never physically or
- 43:02Speaker 1: sexually abused her, and that she had indeed manufactured the
- 43:06Speaker 1: accusations which were used to convince Darren Lopez that her
- 43:09Speaker 1: husband was dangerous. Her admissions confirmed the extensive deception uncovered
- 43:15Speaker 1: during the investigation, that Jennifer had impersonated Jamie and other
- 43:19Speaker 1: individuals through fabricated email accounts, sent photographs falsely depicting injuries,
- 43:25Speaker 1: and repeatedly encouraged Darren to believe she was in danger
- 43:30Speaker 1: and needed savings. On June 21, 2022, Jennifer returned to
- 43:35Speaker 1: federal court for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle.
- 43:40Speaker 1: The proceedings addressed the deliberate nature of the conspiracy, Jennifer's
- 43:44Speaker 1: exploitation of Darren's beliefs that he was protecting her, and
- 43:48Speaker 1: the extensive efforts she made to conceal her involvement. Judge
- 43:53Speaker 1: Boyle was reportedly particularly critical of Jennifer's betrayal of Jamie
- 43:58Speaker 1: and her attempts to portray herself as a victim. According
- 44:01Speaker 1: to investigators who attended the hearing, Jennifer even began crying
- 44:05Speaker 1: as the judge addressed her conduct, prompting Judge Boyle to
- 44:08Speaker 1: even challenge the sincerity of her tears. She described Jennifer's
- 44:12Speaker 1: actions as pure evil, emphasizing that Jamie had been killed
- 44:17Speaker 1: because of a deception created by the person he had
- 44:21Speaker 1: trusted most. Judge Boyle ultimately sentenced Jennifer to life in
- 44:27Speaker 1: prison in federal custody. She was also ordered to pay
- 44:31Speaker 1: a $ 250, 000 fine and $ 6, 500 in restitution for Jamie's unpaid
- 44:38Speaker 1: funeral expenses. Now for Darren's trial. It began in Dallas
- 44:42Speaker 1: County in July of 2023. Unlike Jennifer, he maintained a
- 44:47Speaker 1: not guilty plea and argued that he had been manipulated
- 44:51Speaker 1: to commit this murder. His defense attorney, Juan Sanchez, emphasized
- 44:56Speaker 1: Darren's traumatic brain injury. His post-traumatic stress disorder, and long-standing
- 45:01Speaker 1: military background, arguing that Jennifer had deliberately exploited his vulnerabilities.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Darren testified that he genuinely believed Jamie was violently abusing Jennifer,
- 45:12Speaker 1: and that killing him was necessary to protect her. He
- 45:16Speaker 1: acknowledged that he had taken an innocent man's life, explaining
- 45:19Speaker 1: that he was devastated when he discovered the allegations were
- 45:22Speaker 1: all fabricated. His defense maintained that he had interpreted the
- 45:28Speaker 1: situation as an emergency rescue rather than a calculated murder
- 45:33Speaker 1: for personal gain. Prosecutor Brandy Mitchell and the prosecution team
- 45:38Speaker 1: challenged that explanation, though. They argued that Darren had spent
- 45:42Speaker 1: months considering the situation. He had traveled approximately 650 miles
- 45:47Speaker 1: to Dallas, waited several hours near Jamie's home, then approached
- 45:52Speaker 1: an unarmed man from behind and shot him repeatedly. Whatever
- 45:57Speaker 1: Darren believed about Jennifer's circumstances, prosecutors maintained that he had
- 46:01Speaker 1: numerous opportunities, or countless if you ask me, to contact authorities,
- 46:08Speaker 1: verify her allegations, or pursue alternatives that did not involve
- 46:13Speaker 1: killing someone. On August 2nd, 2023, following approximately a week
- 46:19Speaker 1: of proceedings, the jury came back with their verdict. And
- 46:22Speaker 1: Darren was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 62
- 46:26Speaker 1: years in Texas State Prison. For Jamie's family and friends,
- 46:32Speaker 1: the convictions didn't undo what had happened that fateful day.
- 46:36Speaker 1: His parents, sister, and daughter had lost someone central in
- 46:40Speaker 1: their lives, while friends who had trusted Jennifer struggled with
- 46:44Speaker 1: the discovery that she had planned his death. The family
- 46:49Speaker 1: home in Dallas was eventually sold. Amber moved away from
- 46:52Speaker 1: Texas with Maggie. Neighbors who had welcomed the Faiths into
- 46:57Speaker 1: their community were left remembering the gatherings, conversations, and friendships
- 47:02Speaker 1: they had shared with Jamie. The company GoFundMe subsequently offered
- 47:07Speaker 1: refunds to those who had contributed to Jennifer's fundraiser. Jamie
- 47:12Speaker 1: was 49 years old when he died. He had built
- 47:14Speaker 1: a successful career, raised a daughter that he had chosen
- 47:18Speaker 1: to adopt, and maintained friendships that stretched back Those who
- 47:23Speaker 1: knew him remembered his generosity, his humor, and the genuine
- 47:28Speaker 1: interest he took in other people's lives. Jamie's friend Ross
- 47:32Speaker 1: Jensen even expressed hope that Amber would carry something of
- 47:36Speaker 1: her father's character forward, preserving the qualities that made him
- 47:40Speaker 1: such an important part of their family. And that's the
- 47:44Speaker 1: story of Jamie Faith.
- 47:47Speaker 2: That story is incredibly sad.
- 47:50Speaker 3: It is.
- 47:51Speaker 2: And yeah, bringing up Amber there at the end, like
- 47:53Speaker 2: how could Jennifer do that even to her kid like that?
- 47:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Because I'm sure that they had like, being that Jamie
- 48:02Speaker 2: was so wonderful, I'm sure they had like such a
- 48:04Speaker 2: lovely little relationship and she would, Amber would have loved
- 48:08Speaker 2: her dad.
- 48:08Speaker 1: For sure. She finally had a dad in her life.
- 48:11Speaker 1: He adopted her. Yeah. And she took that away from
- 48:15Speaker 1: her daughter.
- 48:16Speaker 2: So that alone, just thinking how the fuck you can
- 48:19Speaker 2: do that.
- 48:20Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Bizarre.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Sorry. She gave that to her daughter, then took it
- 48:24Speaker 1: away from him. Which is even worse.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Sorry. Well, that's just even hard to comprehend.
- 48:32Speaker 1: She's a monster.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Let alone what the hell she did to this amazing man. Like,
- 48:37Speaker 2: oh my goodness gracious. And even, like, Darren had kids. Like,
- 48:42Speaker 2: I kind of feel bad for Darren. I do and
- 48:45Speaker 2: I don't. Because, like, he still did make a choice.
- 48:48Speaker 2: But he was really... really manipulated to this choice he
- 48:54Speaker 2: was and like now his kids don't have a dad
- 48:58Speaker 2: right like well they do but he's in jail so
- 49:00Speaker 2: he's not really gonna be a present.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Dad but he's got life in prison ah so he's
- 49:05Speaker 1: not much of a present dad no their dad's now
- 49:08Speaker 1: a murderer too and all because jennifer what needed more
- 49:14Speaker 1: not only needed more she just had regrets in life
- 49:16Speaker 1: and wanted to go back to her high school boyfriend who.
- 49:19Speaker 2: It wouldn't have even ended up working out either.
- 49:21Speaker 1: No, it wouldn't have. She wouldn't have been happy with him. Guaranteed.
- 49:24Speaker 2: She would have found something wrong. Like, she just likes
- 49:27Speaker 2: to be a victim or something. Like, who the fuck
- 49:30Speaker 2: comes up with these kind of stories of shit that
- 49:34Speaker 2: they're saying happened to them? Like, that's gross.
- 49:36Speaker 4: It is.
- 49:37Speaker 1: She's a piece of shit.
- 49:38Speaker 2: So.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Honestly, Jamie, just for the fact of how genuine and
- 49:45Speaker 1: kind and amazing this man was, I want to label
- 49:48Speaker 1: him our badass of the day because we need more
- 49:50Speaker 1: people like him in the world. And I'm going to
- 49:53Speaker 1: name Jennifer our fucking bitch of the day because she's
- 49:56Speaker 1: a fucking bitch.
- 49:58Speaker 2: We now have a fucking bitch of the day.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Apparently. I'm just throwing that out there. I don't know
- 50:02Speaker 1: if it's going to carry on forward, but I just... Today,
- 50:06Speaker 1: she's our fucking bitch of the day.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Today, you need that. Yes.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Because that's exactly what she is.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Beyond.
