- 0:00When you see others who depart from the faith, do not be shaken
- 0:04or surprised. It was specifically predicted
- 0:08long ago in order that you not be shaken or surprised.
- 0:13Unbelief and disbelief are often used interchangeably, but they
- 0:18are different. Unbelief is the absence of
- 0:21belief. Disbelief, however, is much
- 0:26darker. Many do not believe because they
- 0:29don't want to believe. They eliminate, push away and
- 0:33discount everything they don't want to believe everything that
- 0:36makes them uncomfortable, everything that does not jive
- 0:40with their notions and desires. It can happen quickly because it
- 0:44is a choice. I don't know who and how many
- 0:47fall into that dark hole, but one thing is clear.
- 0:52There are severe consequences for turning against truth once
- 0:59revealed alone, without God, darkness
- 1:19prevails. Hello, I'm Larry Corbridge and
- 1:25this is episode 7 of the Stand Forever series.
- 1:30In the last episode, we considered chaos as one of the
- 1:34dimensions of the natural state of things without God, without
- 1:39his greatest gifts, his Son, his Spirit, and his life.
- 1:45Today we consider another dimension of the natural state
- 1:49of things, darkness alone, without God.
- 1:55As I said, darkness prevails. The natural state of the
- 2:00universe is darkness. Except for the Tree of Life,
- 2:05Lehigh's dream is a fairly dark dream.
- 2:10Darkness is a prominent feature. He was, he said, in a dark and
- 2:16dreary ways. He traveled, he said, for many
- 2:19hours in darkness. And even for those who found the
- 2:24path and the rod of iron, there arose a great mist of darkness
- 2:30to obscure their way. The natural state is darkness
- 2:37after forming the heavens and the earth.
- 2:40Darkness rained upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God
- 2:44was brooding upon the face of the waters.
- 2:47And they, the gods, said, Let there be light, and there was
- 2:52light. Light dispelled the darkness
- 2:57from off the face of the earth. Light dispels darkness, but not
- 3:02the other way around. Darkness cannot extinguish
- 3:07light. If you are filled with light,
- 3:11there shall be in the Lord's words no darkness in you.
- 3:19Again, in the Lord's words light proceedeth forth from the
- 3:22presence of God to feel the immensity of space, the light
- 3:27which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which
- 3:31is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of
- 3:36God. Without God there is no light
- 3:41and darkness prevails. That is true for all of us,
- 3:46individually and spiritually as well as universally and
- 3:51physically. Darkness exists only in the
- 3:56absence of light. It is what is without light.
- 4:00But don't think of darkness as inert, at least not in the
- 4:04spiritual sense. Jesus referred to the power of
- 4:11darkness in our day. The Lord said, For all flesh is
- 4:16corrupted before me, and the powers of darkness prevail upon
- 4:22the earth among the children of men.
- 4:25In one of the accounts of the First Vision, Joseph Smith
- 4:29described the powers of darkness that combined against him.
- 4:34Saying it, he was seized upon by some power which entirely
- 4:40overcame him, and a thick darkness gathered around him.
- 4:47So let's think about the darkness that comes from sin.
- 4:51Sin leads to darkness. When light dims, darkness
- 4:57emerges, and in the dark we are lost and stumble.
- 5:02As said in Proverbs, when we leave the paths of
- 5:06righteousness, we walk in the ways of darkness.
- 5:11Also in Proverbs, the way of the wicked is as darkness.
- 5:18They know not at what they stumble.
- 5:22A man scuffled with his wife, and in the aftermath of the
- 5:26struggle he was horrified by the darkness that followed.
- 5:33He said this I was alone and afraid I would be eternally
- 5:38alone because of my actions. I despaired.
- 5:43I was very depressed emotionally and felt totally overcome with
- 5:48dark feelings and thoughts. The room I was in felt enveloped
- 5:54in darkness. I felt lost, Isaiah said of
- 6:00people who do not seek unto their God.
- 6:04There is no light in them, and they shall look unto the earth
- 6:10and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish, and they
- 6:16shall be driven to darkness, he said.
- 6:21Speaking of our day, Isaiah also said Darkness shall cover the
- 6:27earth, and gross darkness. The people, your iniquities have
- 6:34separated between you and your God.
- 6:37We wait for light, but behold obscurity for brightness, but we
- 6:43walk in darkness. We grope for the wall like the
- 6:49blind, he said, and we grope as if we had no eyes.
- 6:54We stumble at noonday as in the night.
- 6:58We are in desolate places as dead men.
- 7:04Again. Those are the words of Isaiah.
- 7:07It is foolish, of course, to wait for to hope for light while
- 7:12walking in darkness. The Lord also said the light of
- 7:17the body is the eye. If if thine eye be evil, thy
- 7:23whole body shall be full of darkness.
- 7:27If therefore the light that is in the be darkness, how great is
- 7:33that darkness? Ignorance and unbelief are also
- 7:40shrouded in darkness. The Scriptures record that Enoch
- 7:47beheld, and lo, all the nations of the earth were before him,
- 7:52and there came generation upon generation, generation.
- 7:58And behold, the power of Satan was upon all the face of the
- 8:02earth, And he saw angels descending out of heaven, and he
- 8:06heard a loud voice, saying, Woe, woe be unto the inhabitants of
- 8:11the earth. And he beheld Satan, and he had
- 8:15a great chain in his hand, and it veiled the whole face of the
- 8:21earth with darkness. And he looked up and laughed,
- 8:25and his angels rejoiced. Satan, who is the Prince of
- 8:32darkness, laughed. And God wept.
- 8:37And it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon the
- 8:40residue of the people, and he wept.
- 8:45And Enoch bore record of it, saying, How is it that the
- 8:49heavens weep, and shed forth their tears as the rain upon the
- 8:53mountains? The Lord said unto Enoch, Behold
- 8:57these thy brethren, they are the workmanship of mine own hands.
- 9:03And I gave unto them their knowledge in the day I created
- 9:07them, and in the garden of Eden gave I unto man his agency.
- 9:14And unto thy brethren have I said, and also given
- 9:17commandment, that they should love one another, and that they
- 9:21should choose me their father, choose me their father.
- 9:30But behold, they are without affection, and they hate their
- 9:33own blood. But behold, their sins shall be
- 9:37upon the heads of their fathers, Satan shall be their father, and
- 9:42misery shall be their doom. And the whole of heavens shall
- 9:47weep over them, even all the workmanship, workmanship of mine
- 9:51hands. Wherefore should not the heavens
- 9:55weep, seeing these shall suffer? What is the great chain in
- 10:04Satan's hand, which covers the whole earth with darkness?
- 10:09Is it sin? Not entirely, Alma, said he,
- 10:15that will harden his heart. The same receiveth the lesser
- 10:20portion of the Word, And he that will not harden his heart to him
- 10:25is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto
- 10:29him to know the mysteries of God, until he know them in full.
- 10:35And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the
- 10:39lesser portion of the word, until they know nothing
- 10:45concerning his mysteries, and then they are taken captive by
- 10:51the devil and led by his will down to destruction.
- 10:56Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell.
- 11:02It is also what Mormon calls the dark veil of unbelief.
- 11:10The Lord said to Isaiah, My people are gone into captivity
- 11:15because they have no knowledge, and their honorable men are
- 11:21famished and their multitude dried up with thirst.
- 11:28The chains of hell are forged by the links of ignorance and
- 11:35unbelief. The absence of knowledge of the
- 11:39Word of God, which is light. The great and honorable of the
- 11:45world are famished without knowledge of the primary truths.
- 11:50And public opinion is also a dry well.
- 11:55People turn to Google to answer every question, but the Google
- 11:59well is also dry of answers to the most important questions.
- 12:06Unbelief and disbelief are often used interchangeably, but they
- 12:12are different. Unbelief is the absence of
- 12:16belief, usually because of ignorance.
- 12:19Disbelief, however, is much darker.
- 12:25It is the unwillingness to believe, or the rejection of
- 12:29truth. Unbelief is a vacuum.
- 12:33Disbelief is rejection, and of the two disbelief is far, far
- 12:42more devastating. It is recorded in the book of
- 12:46Moses that Adam and Eve blessed the name of God and they made
- 12:50all things known unto their sons and their daughters.
- 12:54And Satan come came among them, saying, I am also a son of God.
- 13:00And he commanded them, saying believe it not.
- 13:04That is meaning what their parents Adam and Eve had taught
- 13:07them, and they believed it not. And they love Satan more than
- 13:12God. That's disbelief.
- 13:16How does that happen so quickly? It can happen quickly because it
- 13:22is a choice. Many do not believe because they
- 13:27don't want to believe. They adhere to the vacuum of the
- 13:32of the religion of disbelief. But nature abhors a vacuum and
- 13:37fallacy quickly fills the void. When truth is attacked, little
- 13:42to nothing is offered to replace it except the stark cold void of
- 13:48disbelief. It is belief by default, belief
- 13:52by elimination. They eliminate, push away and
- 13:56discount everything they don't want to believe, everything that
- 13:59makes them uncomfortable, everything that does not jive
- 14:03with their notions and desires. And then they look around and
- 14:06pick up anything that is left on the ground and they put that in
- 14:10their little bag. The Lord said He will show no
- 14:15greater things to those who contend against or deny His
- 14:21word. And even more troubling, he has
- 14:25said, For behold, if ye deny the Holy Ghost once it has had place
- 14:30in you, and you know that ye deny it, behold, this is a sin
- 14:36which is unpardonable. I don't know who and how many
- 14:42fall into that dark hole, but one thing is clear.
- 14:47There are severe consequences for turning against truth once
- 14:55revealed. Darkness and death never fall so
- 15:02hard and cold. As for those who deny truth once
- 15:07revealed by the Holy Ghost, the degree of darkness is probably
- 15:13commensurate with the degree of light denied.
- 15:18But the darkness of disbelief is deeper than the darkness of
- 15:22unbelief or sin. It is one thing to fall short of
- 15:27the truth, but it is far worse, far worse to deny it.
- 15:35People who live a life of wild abandoned usually do not deny
- 15:39the truth. They don't live it, but they
- 15:42usually don't deny it. They usually retain their
- 15:45testimony and know their courses.
- 15:48Often when they come to their senses, they usually correct
- 15:53their course. But it is different for those
- 15:56who disbelieve and turn against the truth more than those who
- 16:03get off course but honestly acknowledge it.
- 16:06Darkness settles in. They ask no questions.
- 16:13They seek no answers. They quickly forget what they
- 16:18once knew and soon become a cold shell of their former self.
- 16:25One person with a long history of immorality said this.
- 16:31After a couple of years passed, I realized the depth and power
- 16:36of my testimony would not allow me to stay away from the church.
- 16:42So I began going faithfully. I broke off the relationship
- 16:47with the other person and started on the road to be re
- 16:50baptized and to see if I might eventually be found worthy to
- 16:55have my blessings restored. This is a typical account.
- 17:01I have wondered why the flame of knowledge and conviction is not
- 17:05entirely extinguished with ongoing sin for some, while
- 17:10others become embittered, lose knowledge and the flame dies.
- 17:17They grow cold and never return. What makes the difference?
- 17:21There are only two options. When, of course, one is to
- 17:26acknowledge the deviation, the other is to deny it.
- 17:33The first is recognition or acknowledgement of truth even
- 17:37while not living it. The second is denial.
- 17:43It attempts to justify sin by refusing to even acknowledge it.
- 17:50The Lord continues to reach out to those who are honestly off
- 17:54course to nudge them back. While I don't think the Lord
- 17:59refuses to speak to those who deny Him, they refuse to listen.
- 18:06That's the problem and it is devastating.
- 18:14Nephi recorded saying this. Behold, my beloved brethren,
- 18:21thus came the voice of the Son unto me, saying, After you have
- 18:26repented of your sins, and witnessed unto the Father, that
- 18:30you are willing to keep my commandments by baptism of
- 18:34water, and have received the baptism of fire and of the Holy
- 18:39Ghost, and can speak with a new tongue, yeah, even with the
- 18:44tongue of angels. And after this should deny me,
- 18:52it would have been better for you that ye had not known me.
- 18:58Nephi also spoke about many who hardened their hearts against
- 19:03the Holy Spirit, saying, But behold, there are many that
- 19:07harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no
- 19:11place in them. Wherefore they cast many things
- 19:17away which are written in our day.
- 19:20Think about the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the
- 19:23Pearl of Great Great Price, the Bible, and the words of living
- 19:27prophets, and then continuing and esteem them as things of
- 19:33naughty. Mormon adds that after a people
- 19:39have been once enlightened by the Spirit of God and have had
- 19:44great knowledge of things pertaining to righteousness, and
- 19:48then have fallen away into sin and transgression, they become
- 19:52more hardened, and thus their state becomes worse than though
- 19:57they have never known these things.
- 20:01Jacob links denial of the Holy Ghost with a hardened heart,
- 20:06saying. Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
- 20:10I beseech of you in words of soberness, that ye would repent,
- 20:15and come with full purpose of heart, and cleave unto God as he
- 20:20cleaveth unto you, and while his arm of mercy is extended towards
- 20:26you in the light of day, harden not your hearts.
- 20:31Yeah, today, if you will hear his voice, harden not your
- 20:36hearts, for why will you die? A hardened heart is a primary
- 20:44consequence of disbelief. What does it mean to harden
- 20:49one's heart? It calls to mind the now famous
- 20:53struggle of Justice Potter Stewart of the United States
- 20:57Supreme Court, who said although it is difficult to define
- 21:02hardcore pornography, he said, I know it when I see it.
- 21:09While a heart and heart may be difficult to to define, you know
- 21:14it when you see it. The healthy heart in the
- 21:18spiritual sense is an open heart.
- 21:21It is open to limitless possibilities.
- 21:25It is open to the reality. That reality is immensely
- 21:29greater than what little we know and experience.
- 21:33The reality that our experience is barely a speck in the broad
- 21:38expanse of the universe, and that our perception is extremely
- 21:43limited. A healthy heart is open to the
- 21:46reality that with God all things are possible.
- 21:51A healthy heart is open to the voice and spirit of the Lord.
- 21:57Paul said today, if you will hear his voice, harden not your
- 22:03hearts. A heart heart is closed is a
- 22:08closed heart. It is close to anything that
- 22:11does not fit neatly within one's preferences or experience and
- 22:16knowledge. It is close to a vast universe
- 22:20of limitless possibilities, bound as the Ant who thinks the
- 22:26entire universe is its hill and the patch of ground around it.
- 22:32Dark and dire consequences flow from a hard heart.
- 22:36And rejecting the words of the prophets.
- 22:39Speaking of our day, an Angel told Nephi, For the time cometh,
- 22:43say at the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and marvelous
- 22:49work among the children of man, A work which shall be
- 22:53everlasting either on the one hand or the other.
- 22:59Either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or
- 23:05unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and
- 23:10the blindness of their minds. Unto their being brought into
- 23:13captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and
- 23:18spiritually, according to the captivity of the devil, of which
- 23:23I have spoken. Jacob asked.
- 23:29For behold, after you have been nourished by the good word of
- 23:32God all day long, will ye reject these words?
- 23:40Will ye reject the words of the prophets?
- 23:43And will ye reject all the words which have been spoken
- 23:48concerning Christ, and after so many have been spoken concerning
- 23:53Him? And deny the good word of
- 23:55Christ, and the power of God and the gift of the Holy Ghost, and
- 23:59quench the Holy Spirit, and make a mock of the great plan of
- 24:04redemption which He hath laid for you.
- 24:10Will you? Will you go away, or will you
- 24:14stand forever? Deception is also leads to
- 24:21darkness. One of the great challenges of
- 24:25life is to see clearly and not be deceived.
- 24:30Satan is the father of lies to deceive and blind man, and to
- 24:34lead them captive at his will. Even as many as do not hearken
- 24:39unto God's voice, beginning with ye shall not surely die.
- 24:47Deception and confusion are as much Satan's intent as
- 24:51temptation, and temptation usually follows the other two.
- 24:58Except for the life and mission of the Holy Messiah, probably
- 25:02nothing has been more clearly prophesied and described than
- 25:07this time, our time, the last days.
- 25:11Those two, the Savior and the dispensation of the fullness of
- 25:15times, are the primary prophetic focal points from the beginning
- 25:20of time, and we live and breathe and do in the second one.
- 25:26Considering what has been prophesied, we should not be
- 25:30surprised, but never complacent by what unfolds around us.
- 25:36Here is only a small portion of what we of what was foreseen
- 25:41that we may now see in real time.
- 25:45Now this is kind of a long list, so just stay with me.
- 25:49Their land also is full of idols.
- 25:53They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own
- 25:57fingers have made. And many false prophets shall
- 26:02rise, and shall deceive many. For many shall come in my name,
- 26:09saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many.
- 26:15And there shall be signs. And upon the earth, distress of
- 26:19nations with perplexity, men's hearts failing them for fear.
- 26:25In the latter time some shall depart from the faith, giving
- 26:29heed to seducing spirits and the doctrines of devils.
- 26:35Now the spirit speaketh expressly that in the latter
- 26:39time some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
- 26:45spirits and the doctrines of devils.
- 26:49Know this also, that in the last days perilous time shall come,
- 26:55for men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous boisters,
- 26:59proud blasphemers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce
- 27:05despisers of those that are good traitors, heady, high minded,
- 27:12lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, having a form of
- 27:17godliness, but denying the power thereof.
- 27:21From such turn away, ever learning, and never able to come
- 27:28to the knowledge of the truth. Men of corrupt minds reprobate
- 27:33concerning the faith. Yeah, and all that will live
- 27:38godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, but evil men
- 27:44and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being
- 27:51deceived. When the Lord described the
- 27:56signs of His coming and the end of the world, when He described
- 28:03our day, He also mentioned wars and rumors of wars, nations
- 28:08rising against nations, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, and
- 28:14especially deception, saying, For in those days, this day
- 28:21there shall also arise false Christs and false prophets, and
- 28:26shall show great signs and wonders in so much that if
- 28:30possible they shall deceive the very elect, who are the elect
- 28:34according to the covenant. Again, that's a long list, but
- 28:41those prophecies are not general in nature, Speaking of
- 28:47tendencies of people over time. They are prophecies specific to
- 28:52our day, this day. And so when you see others who
- 28:58depart from the faith, do not be shaken or surprised.
- 29:03It was specifically predicted long ago in order that you not
- 29:08be shaken or surprised, but reassured in your own conviction
- 29:14as you see the Word of God fulfilled before your very eyes.
- 29:21And a false Christ is more than a person.
- 29:25It may be an idea, a principle, even a true good principle could
- 29:31be a lifestyle or an obsession on anything above and beyond
- 29:37God. It includes anything or anyone
- 29:41that becomes the North Star, the basis for making choices instead
- 29:47of or above God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, or
- 29:52distracts from worship of them. False prophets include anyone
- 29:58advocating obeisance to anyone or anything above God our
- 30:03Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and His gospel.
- 30:08I'm not sure, as I've said before, of all implied by the
- 30:12qualification, if possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
- 30:16But I do think it means at least everyone, everyone in our day
- 30:23will be challenged, even the very elect.
- 30:27There are many who deceive, and this, the spectrum of deception
- 30:33is broad. At one end we meet those who
- 30:37attack the Restoration, Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon.
- 30:41Next, we see those who believe in the Restoration but claim the
- 30:44Church is somehow now deficient and has gone astray.
- 30:49There are others who also claim to believe in the Restoration
- 30:53but are disillusioned with doctrine that conflicts with
- 30:56shifting attitudes of our day. There are some who, without
- 31:01authority, lay claim to visions, dreams and visitations to right
- 31:06the ship and give us a higher path or prepare the church for
- 31:10the end of the world. Others are deceived by false
- 31:14spirits. At the far end of the spectrum,
- 31:19we come to an entire universe of distractions.
- 31:24Never has there been more information, misinformation and
- 31:29disinformation. More stars to which your wagon
- 31:33may be hitched. More goods, gadgets and games.
- 31:37More options, places to go, things to see and do, to occupy
- 31:42your time and attention away from that which is most
- 31:45important. And all of that and much more is
- 31:49disseminated instantaneously throughout the world by
- 31:53electronic media from one extreme to the other.
- 31:58We live in the dispensation of the fullness of times.
- 32:03Everything is before us, the full spectrum of the depths of
- 32:08darkness and evil, to eternal splendor, brilliance, beauty,
- 32:13magnificence, grandeur, glory and exaltation, and everything
- 32:19in between. Jesus said Lay not up for
- 32:24yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust death
- 32:29corrupt and where thieves breakthrough and steal.
- 32:33But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven things of
- 32:37eternal value, where neither moth nor rust death corrupt, and
- 32:43where thieves do not breakthrough and steal.
- 32:45For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- 32:51Never in the history of the world has this instruction to
- 32:55pursue the ultimate treasures of eternal value been more critical
- 33:01or timely than today. Never has it been easier to get
- 33:07lost in little things. We we call most of those things
- 33:12diversions, and rightly so, because in fact they divert us
- 33:16from things of greatest importance.
- 33:19In such a flood of information and things, the challenge is not
- 33:24only to sift between good and evil, rather to sort between the
- 33:29mundane and the monumental as well.
- 33:33There isn't much that matters greatly in this life, but there
- 33:37are a few things that are monumentally important, even
- 33:42more important than life. We are prone to deception and
- 33:49often cannot see far ahead on our own.
- 33:54We don't see where to go or what to do.
- 33:57We easily lose our way and become lost in the dark.
- 34:04The challenge to see clearly and not be deceived has never been
- 34:08greater. This is a day of deception.
- 34:12So, in summary, sin, unbelief, disbelief, and deception are all
- 34:21factors that contribute to darkness.
- 34:26Without God, darkness prevails. The essential problem in life is
- 34:33separation from God our Father.
