- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn French with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and you're with me again. Luna: Hi Lucas! I'm so ready for another tiny French lesson. What are we tackling today? Lucas: Well, we've covered a lot of basics, but we haven't really talked about body parts in a while. Today, let's focus on something simple but super useful: the hands. Luna: Hands, huh? I can use mine to wave hello in French. Or maybe to hold a croissant. That sounds good. Lucas: Exactly. So the French word for hands is les mains. Let's try that together. Les mains. Luna: Les mains. Les mains. That's actually pretty easy. Lucas: It is. Now, do you remember how we say 'I use' from our -ER verbs episode? You said 'j'aime' for I like. For 'use', it's 'j'utilise'. Luna: J'utilise. So I could say 'J'utilise mes mains' to mean I use my hands. Lucas: Perfect. J'utilise mes mains. Let's break that down slowly. J'utilise mes mains. Luna: J'utilise mes mains. J'utilise mes mains. So if I'm typing on my phone, I use my hands. J'utilise mes mains. Lucas: Exactly. And you can use that in so many situations. Cooking, playing piano, texting. All with les mains. Luna: Now, what about fingers? Because I definitely use those more for texting. Lucas: Great question. Fingers in French are les doigts. Les doigts. Luna: Les doigts. Les doigts. That's fun to say. Les doigts. Lucas: Yeah, it has a nice ring to it. And now, let's count them. You know your numbers, right? How many fingers do you have on one hand? Luna: Five. So I can say 'J'ai cinq doigts' – I have five fingers. Lucas: You're already putting it together. J'ai cinq doigts. Let's say that together. J'ai cinq doigts. Luna: J'ai cinq doigts. J'ai cinq doigts. And if I had six, I'd say 'j'ai six doigts'. But I don't. Lucas: That's a good point. Now, here's a common phrase you might hear in a classroom or just in daily life: 'je lève la main' – I raise my hand. Luna: Je lève la main. That's useful when you want to ask a question. Do you want to practice raising your hand? Lucas: Sure. Je lève la main. Je lève la main. Now you try. Luna: Je lève la main. Je lève la main. I'm actually raising my hand right now, but no one can see. Lucas: That's okay. The important thing is you're saying it right. So we have les mains, les doigts, j'utilise mes mains, j'ai cinq doigts, and je lève la main. Let's do a quick review. Luna: Okay, let's go. Les mains. Lucas: Les doigts. Luna: J'utilise mes mains. Lucas: J'ai cinq doigts. Luna: Je lève la main. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's put these into a tiny scene. Imagine you're in a French class. The teacher asks a question, and you know the answer. You raise your hand and say...? Luna: Je lève la main. Lucas: And then you count your fingers because you want to make sure you have five. You say...? Luna: J'ai cinq doigts. Lucas: And you're using your hands to gesture. You say...? Luna: J'utilise mes mains. Lucas: Nice. You've got it. Before we wrap up, I want to mention something. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with French, and you'd like to keep the show ad-free, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: So now, let's do one last repetition. Les mains. Les doigts. J'utilise mes mains. J'ai cinq doigts. Je lève la main. Practice these until we meet again. À bientôt! Luna: À bientôt!
