- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lakewell Time and a Monday Afternoon Jeff Lagwell, brought
- 0:03Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW
- 0:08Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with the job, end with a career, Jeff.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I started the show with saying, fantastic victory for the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Broncos yesterday. And I say it for this reason, like,
- 0:20Speaker 1: if you go into the micro and break down the film,
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm sure Sean Payton is gonna have plenty to complain about.
- 0:25Speaker 1: But you won a game in which you lost in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the turnover march, and you won a game in which
- 0:31Speaker 1: bo Nicks was not particularly sharp, and you won a
- 0:34Speaker 1: game that you did not have Patrick Sartan on the field.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And if you have a good enough defense and a
- 0:41Speaker 1: good enough offensive line, and you're deep enough to be
- 0:43Speaker 1: able to win games where you have those kind of
- 0:45Speaker 1: factors going against you, that's nothing short of absolutely fantastic
- 0:52Speaker 1: for a team to be able to find ways to
- 0:54Speaker 1: win football games like that.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Nate, I mean, I think the thing that strikes
- 0:59Speaker 2: me is, I mean, I think in general, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: as fans, maybe the Chicago Cincinnati game is, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: is that pedal to the metal points everywhere, and that's
- 1:10Speaker 2: a that's a gas to watch, Yeah, But the Broncos
- 1:15Speaker 2: game yesterday that that's a playoff profile type of game.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And I always think if you're really going to be
- 1:24Speaker 2: a factor in the playoffs, you have to be in
- 1:27Speaker 2: some of those during the season. And you know, let's
- 1:31Speaker 2: face it, there's.
- 1:32Speaker 1: No more.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Uh no more of a brawler of a team right
- 1:36Speaker 2: now than the Broncos. I mean, they've they've won four
- 1:39Speaker 2: games they trailed going into the fourth quarter and they
- 1:42Speaker 2: haven't lost any of those you know, four and oho
- 1:45Speaker 2: in those types of games. And they've got a defense
- 1:48Speaker 2: in today's NFL that hasn't given up a touchdown in
- 1:52Speaker 2: four games. I mean, that's that's not a profile you see,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and I don't think people even you know us who
- 2:00Speaker 2: cover this stuff on a daily basis. They got forty sacks,
- 2:05Speaker 2: the next team's twenty eight. I mean that tells you
- 2:08Speaker 2: kind of where they're at right now. Like the Seahawks
- 2:11Speaker 2: are generally regarded to have a really good defense right now,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and I think they've faced five fewer dropbacks than the
- 2:20Speaker 2: Bronco have have this year, and they have twenty seven sacks.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think, I mean, just to put all that in perspective.
- 2:27Speaker 2: No other team gets after the quarterback like this, and
- 2:31Speaker 2: it's really fueling their defense. And you know, they did
- 2:36Speaker 2: a just yesterday without Sir Tan because you're gonna have to.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But to be able to do all that without Sir
- 2:42Speaker 2: Tan in the lineup, I think was a really to
- 2:47Speaker 2: me that would be the ultimate takeaway in the game.
- 2:49Speaker 2: You were able to play that kind of game without
- 2:52Speaker 2: your best player.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and it certainly it helps to be facing Davis
- 2:55Speaker 1: Mills largely instead of CJ. Stroud, But kind of to
- 2:58Speaker 1: that point, Jeff, like, yeah, those edge rushers are amazing,
- 3:01Speaker 1: Like both Benito and Cooper are amazing, But to me
- 3:05Speaker 1: right now, like the two guys that are setting the
- 3:07Speaker 1: pass rush apart, like there's a reason they're on the
- 3:10Speaker 1: historical trajectory is Zach Allen and John Franklin Myers, And
- 3:13Speaker 1: and they're they're consistent penetration up front because how many
- 3:19Speaker 1: times did you see Davis Mills or how many times
- 3:21Speaker 1: did you see Dak Prescott a couple of weeks ago
- 3:24Speaker 1: of just guys trying to step up and make a
- 3:28Speaker 1: play and there's nowhere to step to it just it's
- 3:32Speaker 1: everything has collapsed around you and then somebody is getting
- 3:35Speaker 1: home to be able to make the sack.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Zach Allen leads the entire NFL and
- 3:41Speaker 2: quarterback hits. And you know, we always hear people say,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you know, sacks aren't everything, and they're not especially for
- 3:49Speaker 2: interior guys. But for one of your interior guys to
- 3:53Speaker 2: be leading the NFL and quarterback hits with all of
- 3:57Speaker 2: the great pass rushers, you know, Miles Garrett, Michael Parson's
- 4:01Speaker 2: nick Bonido, I mean, they're not leading the NFL and
- 4:05Speaker 2: quarterback hits. Zach Allen is leading the NFL and quarterback hits.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And this is you know, yes, they give up big
- 4:12Speaker 2: plays because they're aggressive. You know, yesterday the big play
- 4:15Speaker 2: to the tight end is because the quarterback makes a
- 4:19Speaker 2: great decision. You know that it's the old school thing,
- 4:23Speaker 2: replace the pressure with the ball and Hafanga blitzes up
- 4:27Speaker 2: that the corner and he replaced the pressure with the
- 4:30Speaker 2: ball right into that spot. And sometimes when you're aggressive,
- 4:35Speaker 2: that's gonna happen. But you know, they they they limit
- 4:39Speaker 2: those plays even while playing as aggressive as they'd like,
- 4:44Speaker 2: which is you know, yeah it you know in a
- 4:48Speaker 2: playoff situation that that play could be the difference. But
- 4:53Speaker 2: right now, I think it's really an intriguing defense to
- 4:56Speaker 2: watch because they offer up a lot of different variety
- 5:00Speaker 2: of things some other people aren't doing.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Jeff, you and I lived twenty fifteen together quite closely
- 5:07Speaker 3: because I was on the broadcast crew. You were doing
- 5:09Speaker 3: a lot of our shows, and gosh, this feels awfully similar.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I'm curious because I asked this of Nate earlier, and
- 5:15Speaker 3: we'll probably discuss later on in the show that Bronco team.
- 5:19Speaker 4: You knew they'd have to go through.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The Patriots right when I look at some true AFC contenders,
- 5:23Speaker 3: I guess it's interesting because I don't know how I
- 5:25Speaker 3: feel about New England yet. I'm kind of wondering, if
- 5:28Speaker 3: you know Indy Is Are they one of those teams
- 5:29Speaker 3: where you finally get a lost or maybe the tapes
- 5:31Speaker 3: catching up to him.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:32Speaker 4: I know Jonathan Taylor's outstanding. I don't know that they'd
- 5:35Speaker 4: want to go back there.
- 5:36Speaker 3: But right now, if they would have to face Buffalo,
- 5:38Speaker 3: if they can hold up the way they're going, Buffalo
- 5:40Speaker 3: would have to come. Hear you'd at least avoid going
- 5:41Speaker 3: to Buffalo. I don't know if that'll flop by the
- 5:43Speaker 3: end of the.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Year or not.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But how many truly great teams might this Bronco team
- 5:48Speaker 3: have to face to get at least to the Super Bowl.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Well, Andy, it's the AFC, So maybe you don't face
- 5:56Speaker 2: a great team, but you are gonna face a quarterback
- 6:00Speaker 2: who has that adjective in front of them, probably you know,
- 6:04Speaker 2: an MVP level quarterback. You know, uh, you know, Daniel
- 6:09Speaker 2: Jones might win the MVP this year. But that to me,
- 6:13Speaker 2: that's what that's why this defense is interesting because their secondary, frankly,
- 6:19Speaker 2: is built better and good or better than anyone else
- 6:22Speaker 2: in the league. And if you're going to fight it
- 6:25Speaker 2: out in the AFC and you don't have an MVP
- 6:30Speaker 2: level quarterback, well you better have a Plan B to win.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And that's their Plan B right now. And I think
- 6:38Speaker 2: that's that's the issue. You're gonna have to beat at
- 6:42Speaker 2: least two probably former MVP winners, if you know, I
- 6:47Speaker 2: still believe the Chiefs are making the playoffs. Maybe I'm crazy,
- 6:51Speaker 2: but it's hard for me to believe they're going to
- 6:53Speaker 2: get all the way to the end of December and
- 6:55Speaker 2: not be in the postseason. But Herbert Mahome Josh Allen.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean, take your pick. You're gonna have to beat
- 7:03Speaker 2: at least two of those guys to get. You know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: Daniel Jones who beat the Broncos already this year and
- 7:09Speaker 2: had one of the better games. You know, you gotta
- 7:12Speaker 2: beat at least two of those guys to get. Whether
- 7:14Speaker 2: their teams are great or not, their quarterbacks make them
- 7:18Speaker 2: potentially that way.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here on a Monday afternoon, Jeff
- 7:22Speaker 1: Legwald joins us via the ramos Law Hotline. Car accident
- 7:25Speaker 1: You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney. Visit Ramoslaw
- 7:29Speaker 1: dot com. Jeff, the run pass ratio in the first
- 7:33Speaker 1: half of yesterday's game seventeen to six by my count,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and JK Dobbins averaging six yards per carry when he
- 7:42Speaker 1: had the football in his hands. In fact, they're opening drive.
- 7:44Speaker 1: They came out aggressively running the football, and then Sean
- 7:49Speaker 1: Just I don't know if he, you know, became blinded
- 7:51Speaker 1: in one eye and couldn't see that side of his
- 7:53Speaker 1: play sheet or what was going on. But the the
- 7:56Speaker 1: imbalance in the play calling again yesterday, it just it
- 8:01Speaker 1: continues to be strange because I think one thing you
- 8:05Speaker 1: can do against Houston is run on them with your big,
- 8:07Speaker 1: physical offensive line. And I thought they were success successful
- 8:10Speaker 1: when they did run the ball, and yet they just
- 8:14Speaker 1: they flat out would not commit to it. What what
- 8:17Speaker 1: in your mind was Sean trying to do with his
- 8:20Speaker 1: play calling yesterday?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Well he was super excited. I asked him about it. Yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 2: I can officially tell you that, But I don't know
- 8:31Speaker 2: how you watch Dobbins do what he did on the
- 8:33Speaker 2: first drive and he does not touch the ball in
- 8:37Speaker 2: the second quarter. Dobbins had no rushing attempts in the
- 8:41Speaker 2: second quarter, and you know, like twenty four yards on
- 8:46Speaker 2: his first three carries. I'm just it's as vexing a
- 8:51Speaker 2: thing about this offense as as you can see right now.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And then you know, after halftime they're they're in a
- 8:57Speaker 2: little bit more of a better run past balance and
- 9:03Speaker 2: they move the ball in my mind better, But you know,
- 9:06Speaker 2: right now, they've they've got u Bo Nicks and the
- 9:10Speaker 2: shotgun a ton, and it's hard to really sort of
- 9:14Speaker 2: produce consistently and run looks out of the gun. And
- 9:21Speaker 2: I think they've just decided, or he decides at times,
- 9:25Speaker 2: that's just how they're going to attack. And I I
- 9:28Speaker 2: look at it, you know, yesterday another long list of
- 9:31Speaker 2: of sort of failed deep balls. That's sort of the
- 9:34Speaker 2: default against pressure is to try and throw over all
- 9:37Speaker 2: of it. And uh, you know, bo Nicks is forty
- 9:43Speaker 2: eight percent completion rate right now against pressure, and that's
- 9:47Speaker 2: not going to get it done for you. And I
- 9:48Speaker 2: don't know if because they're trying to take such a
- 9:50Speaker 2: big bite all the time, and you know they're they're
- 9:54Speaker 2: not working the hot receivers enough closer to the line
- 9:57Speaker 2: of scrimmage any of that. But uh, I think the
- 10:00Speaker 2: run game again, the guy it would benefit the most
- 10:05Speaker 2: is bo Nicks And that's my opinion. And I'll camp
- 10:09Speaker 2: out on that hill for the rest of this season.
- 10:11Speaker 2: But that's what I believe.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Oh look, Dobbin's got going and so did they. But
- 10:15Speaker 3: to your point, you know, I started the game a
- 10:17Speaker 3: little bit late yesterday and I then go back and
- 10:20Speaker 3: watch it all. Be honest with you, LEGI I pick
- 10:23Speaker 3: it up second quarter and go for a while, and
- 10:24Speaker 3: I'm like, is Dobbin's hurt today? Why are they not
- 10:26Speaker 3: playing Dobbins at all? That's how long you had gone
- 10:28Speaker 3: where you hadn't seen him, And then all of a sudden,
- 10:30Speaker 3: he shows back up in the fourth quarter, starts doing stuff.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Trade deadline's coming. I know we've asked you a lot
- 10:37Speaker 3: about it. You know, you've I want to tell everybody
- 10:40Speaker 3: what you've told me before, and you've sat it on
- 10:42Speaker 3: the air. Broncos are a sexy thing to write about.
- 10:46Speaker 3: You put Broncos in there because of the national fan base,
- 10:48Speaker 3: and let's be honest, in some cases international fan base.
- 10:51Speaker 3: You get clicks, so everybody likes to try to link
- 10:53Speaker 3: him to deals. I know Adam Schefter said that we've
- 10:56Speaker 3: seen a lot of trades, more trades than in the past.
- 10:58Speaker 3: He thinks I think he told Pat McAfee he thinks
- 11:01Speaker 3: three more trades may go down or somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You think the Broncos will be involved in that? If
- 11:07Speaker 3: they were, I mean again, you've kind of warned us.
- 11:10Speaker 3: If they do do something, probably wouldn't be sexy. What's
- 11:12Speaker 3: what's your feel about things?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Is?
- 11:14Speaker 3: Were what twenty four hours maybe twenty two hours out
- 11:16Speaker 3: away from the deadline?
- 11:19Speaker 2: You know, Andy, they they're kicking the tires, but everybody does.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I can't emphasize enough. I see way too much reporting
- 11:26Speaker 2: of people are making calls. Yeah, everybody's making calls because
- 11:32Speaker 2: if you're in it, or you think you're in it,
- 11:35Speaker 2: you're gonna see if you can, you know, can you
- 11:38Speaker 2: fix a gap you have? You know, did you have
- 11:41Speaker 2: an injury in the last three weeks that impacts how
- 11:45Speaker 2: you believe what your postseason chances would be. And but
- 11:51Speaker 2: you know, Sean Payton has said publicly and privately he
- 11:55Speaker 2: likes this roster, So I think he would have to
- 11:57Speaker 2: be convinced of of who they would add and how
- 12:02Speaker 2: they would fit uh in this locker room, because he
- 12:06Speaker 2: really really likes this locker room. He doesn't want to
- 12:09Speaker 2: just throw anybody into the pond. But yeah, they're like everybody.
- 12:13Speaker 2: They look all they got to do is look up.
- 12:15Speaker 2: They're tied for the best record in the NFL. Of
- 12:18Speaker 2: course they're going to be interested in you know, once
- 12:21Speaker 2: you're out front at this time of the year, you
- 12:24Speaker 2: want to know, you know, can we get a little better?
- 12:28Speaker 2: You know? And they're going to do that. But I
- 12:31Speaker 2: don't I don't think they want to give up a
- 12:33Speaker 2: lot and I don't think they want to, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: rock the boat too much in their in their locker room.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So it would it would have to be a deal
- 12:41Speaker 2: that fits both the depth chart and the locker room,
- 12:45Speaker 2: and you know, are you going to get that? You know,
- 12:48Speaker 2: there's a reason people are trading players away, so are
- 12:51Speaker 2: you going to get that in a trade? But yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 2: they're looking around, and you know, I think if they
- 12:57Speaker 2: had a chance to add a little speed on off,
- 13:00Speaker 2: they would without giving up too much. But again, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 2: where where's that going? The rotation that's already a little weird,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and all of those things. And I think we may
- 13:12Speaker 2: see something if they think one of the injured guys
- 13:15Speaker 2: isn't going to come back as quickly as as expected.
- 13:19Speaker 2: But right now I'm not hearing that in any regard.
- 13:22Speaker 3: All right, before I let you go, I am kind
- 13:24Speaker 3: of curious because you know, Kansas City now as thereby,
- 13:27Speaker 3: the Broncos just have to survive the Raiders, which you
- 13:30Speaker 3: know they're already what seventy two eight and two right now?
- 13:33Speaker 3: Where are they at seven two? They're trying to get
- 13:35Speaker 3: to eight and two?
- 13:35Speaker 4: That was right?
- 13:36Speaker 3: You think there's any chance at game? Is our TV
- 13:39Speaker 3: insider as well? Any chance that game gets moved to
- 13:41Speaker 3: Sunday night or with a with Detroit Philly? Is that
- 13:44Speaker 3: going to probably be in no touch because of the markets.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Which one would they move Broncos Chiefs to Sunday Night?
- 13:51Speaker 3: With how this may set up, I think.
- 13:54Speaker 2: They would have had to do it already, wouldn't. They
- 13:56Speaker 2: don't have to give them two weeks there.
- 13:57Speaker 5: It's also it's in the two to twenty five window
- 13:59Speaker 5: on CB.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yes, so is that an untouchable?
- 14:02Speaker 5: Well, that's how CBS is going to view it.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yeah, DBS can protect a certain number of games, like
- 14:09Speaker 2: they can't be flexed. Uh well, all the networks get
- 14:13Speaker 2: get a chance to protect a short list of games,
- 14:17Speaker 2: and I'm I'm certain CBS would think Chiefs Broncos.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a nance. Romola warned this about that.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well your guy, what's going on with that?
- 14:31Speaker 2: Dude?
- 14:32Speaker 1: The Broncos, they they do take on the Raiders coming
- 14:35Speaker 1: up here this week. Uh, like you we did see
- 14:38Speaker 1: bron Bauers was back yesterday and at a massive game
- 14:41Speaker 1: for the Raiders. Uh, Gino because he's really good. Yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 1: Geno Smith threw four touchdown passes yesterday. Max Crosby had
- 14:50Speaker 1: a sack. It is a deeply flawed team, but funny
- 14:55Speaker 1: things happen in short weeks. Uh, what what do the
- 14:59Speaker 1: Broncos have to beware of with the silver and bleak
- 15:02Speaker 1: on Thursday night?
- 15:05Speaker 2: Obviously Bowers, because uh, just look at some games. You know,
- 15:09Speaker 2: Tyler Warren had a nice day against the Broncos. Yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 2: you know yesterday the biggest play.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Made was Dalton Schultz.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Was Dalton Schultz. I mean, they have got issues of
- 15:20Speaker 2: the tight ends getting isolated, you know, in the intermediate
- 15:24Speaker 2: area and turning those into big plays. So obviously that
- 15:28Speaker 2: is an enormous thing. And and you know, I believe
- 15:32Speaker 2: at some point, you know, back in the day, Broncos
- 15:36Speaker 2: often put Champ Bailey on Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates.
- 15:40Speaker 2: And I think John A. Barron's resume at some point,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I don't know when, but at some point his resume
- 15:47Speaker 2: is going to include covering some tight ends because he's physical,
- 15:51Speaker 2: he's tough, he's a great tackler, and you know, he's
- 15:55Speaker 2: he's I know he does hadn't gotten a snap count
- 15:57Speaker 2: a lot of people expected, but he is playing at
- 16:00Speaker 2: a pretty high level for a rookie. Uh and it's
- 16:03Speaker 2: just camouflaged and all the other stuff going on. And
- 16:07Speaker 2: when has Max Crosby not had a big day against
- 16:10Speaker 2: the Broncos. Those would be my two things you got
- 16:12Speaker 2: to look out for.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Like you by the way real quickly and I you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I know you had to travel and everything. I don't
- 16:16Speaker 1: know how deep you are into the film study, but
- 16:18Speaker 1: both based on watching the game and starting to chart
- 16:21Speaker 1: it out. How how did Chris Abrams drain uh look
- 16:24Speaker 1: to you yesterday?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Oh he looks he looks good. He's goutty. He's got
- 16:29Speaker 2: that Riley Moss attitude, doesn't matter what happened on the
- 16:34Speaker 2: play before he lines up, and he he is as
- 16:37Speaker 2: patient in coverage as any young corner I've seen. I mean,
- 16:41Speaker 2: that's uh. I always say in the draft season, I
- 16:44Speaker 2: have a little bit of an sec draft multiplier because
- 16:47Speaker 2: those guys are just ready to be pros because of
- 16:50Speaker 2: who they face week to week. And he fits that category,
- 16:54Speaker 2: a really composed player and yeah, you're gonna get beat.
- 16:58Speaker 2: That's just the that's just the way, the way of
- 17:00Speaker 2: the world. But I think he held up very well.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And they picked on him early and stopped frankly because
- 17:08Speaker 2: it didn't go that well. And I think he's I
- 17:12Speaker 2: think he's filled in great and the fact they kept
- 17:15Speaker 2: him after the cutdown I think was a big deal.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and and the right move to make, by the way,
- 17:21Speaker 1: because you're gonna deal with injuries at some point in
- 17:24Speaker 1: the season. Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN dot com. We'll talk
- 17:27Speaker 1: to Jeff on Friday after Broncos Raiders. We get the uh,
- 17:32Speaker 1: we we get the double leg walled post game week
- 17:36Speaker 1: Hell are we gonna do.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Monday on the crag.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Weekend?
- 17:40Speaker 1: There?
- 17:42Speaker 2: I would say, if you call me Thursday before kickoff,
- 17:44Speaker 2: I'll pick up. But that's up pay you guys.
