- 1:39Speaker 9: the outskirts of Forecastle. This is about as outskirts as
- 1:42Speaker 9: you can get. We're possibly hiding behind a truck.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It's so hot, you guys.
- 1:47Speaker 9: Almost under a truck.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's so hot. We are literally in the shade of
- 1:51Speaker 2: a truck.
- 1:51Speaker 9: We found like two squares of shade and we are
- 1:55Speaker 9: perched right there now. We're also looking out on the
- 1:59Speaker 9: lovely Ohio River.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And you can't smell it through this podcast, but man.
- 2:05Speaker 9: Lovely.
- 2:05Speaker 2: What a smell.
- 2:06Speaker 9: Fishy? No, lovely. Not weird old dead fish.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 9: So we are here once again for our forecastle coverage.
- 2:17Speaker 9: So how's it going?
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's hot.
- 2:20Speaker 10: It is.
- 2:22Speaker 2: As I was.
- 2:23Speaker 9: Telling our guest earlier, I'm glad because every other weekend
- 2:28Speaker 9: for months has just poured down rain the entire time.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I would take the rain.
- 2:32Speaker 9: No, I hate it. I've gotten to the point I
- 2:34Speaker 9: hate rain so much. I'm sick of it. I've had enough.
- 2:37Speaker 9: I've had enough rain. We're just going to die a
- 2:40Speaker 9: big desert planet or whatever, but I'm sorry. I'm sick
- 2:42Speaker 9: of it. There's so much rain. It's so much. But
- 2:47Speaker 9: not this weekend. Because it is sunny this weekend.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And we just spoke with our lovely guest.
- 2:53Speaker 9: Our lovely guest.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Israel Nash. He's a very nice man.
- 2:56Speaker 9: We'll get a few in and then we'll come back
- 2:59Speaker 9: to him. How about that? Because we can kind of
- 3:02Speaker 9: do a rundown. This is one of the ongoing things.
- 3:06Speaker 9: And I didn't realize it until I started thinking back.
- 3:09Speaker 9: And I'm like, oh, well, I've kind of done a
- 3:10Speaker 9: version of this several years as we go. Cause I'll
- 3:13Speaker 9: go through and I'll pick a lot of like bands
- 3:15Speaker 9: that are here that are on soundtracks. And then every
- 3:17Speaker 9: once in a while I find somebody that's like a
- 3:19Speaker 9: new band or an artist that I just wasn't familiar with.
- 3:22Speaker 9: And they don't even have a specific soundtrack tie in.
- 3:25Speaker 9: And I'm like, screw it. I don't care. I just
- 3:27Speaker 9: want to play. Like, so again, I, I, I pull
- 3:29Speaker 9: the producer card and I'm like, I say we play
- 3:31Speaker 9: this anyway, mostly because I just want to promote this
- 3:34Speaker 9: new person that I just found out about. So, uh,
- 3:37Speaker 9: I did specifically when I started looking into who was
- 3:39Speaker 9: coming this week for like a few weeks now, I
- 3:42Speaker 9: was like, going through different bands. Some of them I
- 3:44Speaker 9: knew and some of them I was like, Oh wait,
- 3:45Speaker 9: let's check into this person. One of those was a
- 3:49Speaker 9: Julia Jacqueline.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Oh, I love her.
- 3:51Speaker 9: I wasn't as familiar with her. I've spent these last
- 3:53Speaker 9: two weeks listening to damn near nothing but Julia and
- 3:56Speaker 9: she's amazing. And, uh, yeah, I, I tried to time
- 4:00Speaker 9: it out cause I couldn't get here early yesterday. So
- 4:02Speaker 9: I was like, okay, if I leave early and I
- 4:04Speaker 9: get here and I go do this and maybe I'll get,
- 4:06Speaker 9: so like literally I like drove, I walk all the
- 4:08Speaker 9: way up the street and, I get in the gate.
- 4:11Speaker 9: I come around. I'm like right up to the section
- 4:13Speaker 9: and they're announcing her. So I timed it out just
- 4:16Speaker 9: in time to see Julia play live, which she is
- 4:19Speaker 9: amazing and kind of adorable. I got to say, cause
- 4:22Speaker 9: she's Australian and she's got the adorable Australian accent. And
- 4:26Speaker 9: she was saying things like, did you guys put on
- 4:29Speaker 9: your sunscreen? Your moms are going to.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Be upset if you didn't.
- 4:33Speaker 9: She said, moms, it was so cute. She also made
- 4:37Speaker 9: the move of, and it's funnier if you know who's
- 4:40Speaker 9: headlining this event. She came out and after like two songs,
- 4:42Speaker 9: she goes, hey, we're the killers. That was Mr. Brightside.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Nice. She's a good guitar player too.
- 4:50Speaker 9: She's really, I mean, again, like, cause it is one
- 4:54Speaker 9: of those, she is, kind of skilled as a singer-songwriter
- 4:57Speaker 9: and could be fine on her own. And I think
- 5:00Speaker 9: even the band knows that because there's like two songs
- 5:02Speaker 9: that they just sort of drifted off.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 9: And she just kind of took over.
- 5:05Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 9: And then they came back. So yeah, I was going
- 5:08Speaker 9: to work something in that was kind of a little
- 5:10Speaker 9: more upbeat. That is the one thing I will say.
- 5:13Speaker 9: If you get on a run of a whole bunch
- 5:15Speaker 9: of hers, sometimes it might... Even she called herself out.
- 5:17Speaker 9: She's like, this next song is really depressing. It's about
- 5:23Speaker 9: not being able to love someone anymore. And I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 9: you're right. I really love that song, but... After a while,
- 5:28Speaker 9: it might be a downer. So I'm into that kind
- 5:31Speaker 9: of music. So just heads up, know what you're getting
- 5:33Speaker 9: yourself into. But I think she's brilliant. And I was
- 5:36Speaker 9: going to pick a song that was not so, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 9: it wasn't just, there's one or two that I really
- 5:41Speaker 9: love of hers, but it's just kind of her. It's
- 5:43Speaker 9: just doing vocals and it's just really sad. So this
- 5:45Speaker 9: is a little more musically upbeat. And she did play it.
- 5:49Speaker 9: It was one of the last songs she kind of
- 5:50Speaker 9: went out on when she was finishing out the set.
- 5:53Speaker 9: And it is, again, she's not actually promoting on this,
- 5:56Speaker 9: but I'll promote her just because I think she's good.
- 5:58Speaker 9: She did just put out a new album called Crushing,
- 6:00Speaker 9: and this song is on it. So this is Head
- 6:03Speaker 9: Alone from Julia Jaclyn.
- 6:13Speaker 11: Give me a full-length mirror Put it back by the
- 6:23Speaker 11: table before you get there.
- 6:25Speaker 4: My head alone doesn't know how to say.
- 6:46Speaker 11: I don't want to be touched all the time I
- 6:50Speaker 11: raise my body.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Up to be mine He.
- 7:04Speaker 11: Said give me another drink You know it's easy to
- 7:10Speaker 11: talk when.
- 7:11Speaker 12: You don't Alone, won't do it that.
- 7:18Speaker 11: Way Come on, give me the room tonight You know
- 7:26Speaker 11: I've told you before That you hold me too tight
- 7:29Speaker 11: in my head Alone, just wants to stay.
- 7:38Speaker 12: I don't wanna be touched all the time.
- 7:42Speaker 7: I raise my body up to be mine.
- 7:46Speaker 11: Yeah, I don't want to be touched all the time.
- 7:51Speaker 12: I raise my body up to be mine.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I have your back more than I have mine. I
- 8:02Speaker 4: want you to feel good.
- 8:18Speaker 12: You can't love somebody.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Really, guys?
- 8:59Speaker 9: Really?
- 9:00Speaker 2: At least it's not this truck backing up.
- 9:03Speaker 3: We'd be dead.
- 9:04Speaker 9: We'd be dead.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Okay. There's going to be a lot of random noises.
- 9:09Speaker 8: I wonder.
- 9:10Speaker 2: That police officer yelling at teens not to jump this fence.
- 9:12Speaker 9: That part was funny, though.
- 9:13Speaker 2: We're on the lookout for teens.
- 9:15Speaker 9: Yeah, we're looking for loser teens who are trying to
- 9:18Speaker 9: be deadbeats and not buy a ticket to jump a fence.
- 9:22Speaker 9: But there's a cop, and he is doing his damn job.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yes, he is.
- 9:24Speaker 9: He's on the beat. He's taking care of business.
- 9:27Speaker 2: He's taking no shit.
- 9:29Speaker 9: He is sending those little slacker teens right out to
- 9:32Speaker 9: go get a ticket up front where they're supposed to.
- 9:35Speaker 9: So that's mostly what we're doing right now. We're on
- 9:37Speaker 9: the lookout for unscrupulous teens.
- 9:41Speaker 2: So if you hear any yelling.
- 9:43Speaker 9: We might be wrestling a 14-year-old to the ground. Not
- 9:47Speaker 9: the first time.
- 9:47Speaker 2: So many 14-year-olds. Oh.
- 9:51Speaker 9: But they weren't covered in glitter, so it's different than
- 9:53Speaker 9: all the 14-year-olds here.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Oh, yikes.
- 9:55Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: If you ever want to feel old, go to a
- 9:59Speaker 2: music festival in the middle of the summer.
- 10:01Speaker 9: That's what we were discussing earlier. I feel like that's
- 10:04Speaker 9: a new shift. And maybe it's just because it's become
- 10:07Speaker 9: a lifestyle now. There are a lot of festivals, and
- 10:10Speaker 9: people just kind of bounce around the country and hit
- 10:12Speaker 9: different ones. So maybe that's some of it. Or maybe
- 10:15Speaker 9: it's every teenager in our town just saves up money
- 10:18Speaker 9: all year so they can buy these tickets. And then
- 10:20Speaker 9: come here in almost no clothes. Because, yeah, the crowd
- 10:24Speaker 9: has changed so much in the last few years. And it's,
- 10:28Speaker 9: as I said earlier, a decade younger than it was
- 10:30Speaker 9: when I was going to this even, I don't know, five,
- 10:33Speaker 9: eight years ago. It's very different how much the crowd
- 10:36Speaker 9: has shifted. It doesn't help that we're continuing to get
- 10:39Speaker 9: older either. But it's not even that. It's just like
- 10:42Speaker 9: they have started much younger now, too. So we're getting
- 10:46Speaker 9: further and further apart. That's why we're waiting to beat
- 10:49Speaker 9: down teenagers at this fence over here.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Hiding behind a truck.
- 10:52Speaker 9: We're just bitter that we're old people. Damn kids get
- 10:55Speaker 9: to do whatever they want in their glitter and bikini tops.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I don't think I could even jump that fence, even
- 11:01Speaker 2: if I was able to. Oh, I threw my back out.
- 11:04Speaker 9: Damn it, old lady, please get down from the fence.
- 11:08Speaker 9: We've got a wheelchair for you over here. Hold on.
- 11:12Speaker 9: So I was, again, in trying to build... Normally, that's
- 11:16Speaker 9: what we sort of do is... Show up and occasionally
- 11:19Speaker 9: just play whatever the hell we want. But also I
- 11:21Speaker 9: try to piece together like a soundtrack made out of
- 11:25Speaker 9: the artists that are at the event. So in looking at,
- 11:29Speaker 9: and there are a few that have been like a
- 11:30Speaker 9: few years ago I crossed over. So then I had
- 11:32Speaker 9: to like go through songs that are different. So I
- 11:35Speaker 9: am not repeating songs, which is its own thing. you know,
- 11:39Speaker 9: its own battle there. I try not to do that
- 11:41Speaker 9: too much on this show, which is hard to talk
- 11:43Speaker 9: people out of playing the same song. There's many, I guess,
- 11:46Speaker 9: that just references a lot of the same stuff. So
- 11:49Speaker 9: I go out of my way to find you guys
- 11:50Speaker 9: some different stuff. So now I did yesterday, right on that,
- 11:55Speaker 9: not that stage. I'm also going to do a lot
- 11:57Speaker 9: of pointing for you guys at home. Not that stage,
- 11:59Speaker 9: but the one over there. You know which one I'm
- 12:01Speaker 9: talking about.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 9: Cold War Kids was playing. And I do like a
- 12:05Speaker 9: lot of their... I've realized there's a lot of their
- 12:07Speaker 9: stuff that I knew... from radio that i didn't even
- 12:10Speaker 9: realize was them when i started going through their catalog
- 12:12Speaker 9: i was like oh yeah i do know this one
- 12:13Speaker 9: oh wait i know this one too so and looking
- 12:16Speaker 9: through again i was trying to pick ones that weren't
- 12:19Speaker 9: as radio rock that weren't the kind of stuff that
- 12:21Speaker 9: maybe you've heard before i feel like this is a
- 12:23Speaker 9: little lesser also from a movie that most people are
- 12:26Speaker 9: not familiar with from 2014's premature which if you're not
- 12:30Speaker 9: familiar with it watch the trailer if you like time
- 12:33Speaker 9: loop movies which is how it suckered me in this
- 12:35Speaker 9: is a very different take on it and i'm I'm
- 12:39Speaker 9: not sure what to do with it, but anything that's...
- 12:42Speaker 9: I feel like Groundhog Day spawned its own sub-genre of
- 12:45Speaker 9: time loop movies, so that's what this one is.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:49Speaker 9: So, from 2014's Premature, this is Miracle Mile by the
- 12:52Speaker 9: Cold War Kids.
- 12:53Speaker 13: I'll get your damn kids for this!
- 14:35Speaker 9: Come up for air.
- 14:37Speaker 12: Come up for air. Come up.
- 15:43Speaker 13: I could just see you.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Oh ducks hi friends they're coming to.
- 15:56Speaker 9: Ducks and geese gonna scurry.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Get around those fancy ducks.
- 16:01Speaker 9: They're gonna be attacking there are baby ducks though look.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Oh my god they just want to listen to the
- 16:06Speaker 2: music hi friends oh.
- 16:08Speaker 9: It looked at me do you guys like julia jackson
- 16:11Speaker 9: she's really good You should check her out. All the
- 16:13Speaker 9: other ducks love her. This bird that's about to dive
- 16:16Speaker 9: bomb us, he loves her.
- 16:17Speaker 2: There's a lot of bird activity happening right now.
- 16:20Speaker 9: Well, we are near all the dead fish. That could
- 16:23Speaker 9: be why.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Avoid the teenagers, but you get the birds.
- 16:28Speaker 9: So, I also stuck around to see Portugal the Man
- 16:32Speaker 9: last night.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Oh, I saw some interesting things of their background screen.
- 16:37Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I'll give them that. They're And I feel
- 16:40Speaker 9: like I'd seen them because they did play years ago.
- 16:42Speaker 9: I thought I saw them. I don't remember their set
- 16:44Speaker 9: being so... I feel like they're trying to be unusual.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 9: And really, they're going out of their way because they
- 16:54Speaker 9: specifically set out... They had a screen come up. First
- 16:59Speaker 9: of all, I will give them bonus points because their
- 17:01Speaker 9: intro was Beavis and Butthead. I don't know if they
- 17:03Speaker 9: like were on when they brought the show back, if
- 17:05Speaker 9: they played one of their videos and it was just
- 17:07Speaker 9: the whole snippet from there that they did or they
- 17:10Speaker 9: had Mike Judge do something for them. But like basically
- 17:12Speaker 9: Beavis and Butthead intro the band, which is pretty awesome.
- 17:17Speaker 9: So I'm like, that's cool.
- 17:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 17:18Speaker 9: But then as you get into it, it puts up
- 17:20Speaker 9: like a title screen that's like, we're not really good
- 17:23Speaker 9: at crowd banter. So we're just going to put some
- 17:25Speaker 9: stuff on the screen behind us. And I'm just like,
- 17:27Speaker 9: all right, we'll see how this goes.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 9: They played such a weird set and it was a
- 17:35Speaker 9: lot of really long stuff. Like again, like knowing the
- 17:38Speaker 9: kind of stuff that makes it on the radio, they're
- 17:39Speaker 9: another one that like a lot of their stuff more
- 17:42Speaker 9: than I expected has been kind of radio hits. So
- 17:45Speaker 9: like listening to them play last night, I'm like, Oh,
- 17:47Speaker 9: they would not play any of this. It's very long
- 17:50Speaker 9: and kind of not like, not like what usually becomes
- 17:53Speaker 9: jam band kind of long. Just like, After a while,
- 17:56Speaker 9: I'm like, wait, this is that same song. It's been
- 17:58Speaker 9: like nine minutes. Why are we still playing this song?
- 18:02Speaker 9: And then they kept doing covers, but it'd be like
- 18:05Speaker 9: six minutes in and you go, oh, this is a cover.
- 18:08Speaker 9: They're just being weird. They were being extra weird last night.
- 18:13Speaker 9: But I'm not disappointed. They definitely delivered a show. But
- 18:19Speaker 9: they barely talked on the mic. They kept bringing up,
- 18:21Speaker 9: they had all these weird quotes going on on the
- 18:25Speaker 9: screen behind them. One of which was a quote saying,
- 18:28Speaker 9: real band doesn't need singers or something to that effect.
- 18:31Speaker 9: And then at some point, a few minutes later, it said,
- 18:33Speaker 9: but we never said we were a real band anyway.
- 18:36Speaker 9: So yeah, they were going out of their way to
- 18:38Speaker 9: be difficult. But that aside, I like a lot of
- 18:43Speaker 9: their songs. So I did go, and again, I've seen
- 18:46Speaker 9: one or two that were kind of, More recognizable songs
- 18:49Speaker 9: on some bigger soundtracks. This one I picked. Number one,
- 18:52Speaker 9: it's a different song I hadn't heard as much. And
- 18:55Speaker 9: it's from a movie we've covered.
- 18:57Speaker 12: Are you.
- 18:57Speaker 9: No, I don't think... Actually, I know you weren't there
- 19:00Speaker 9: for this one. Have you watched Bright?
- 19:02Speaker 7: No.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Is that really terrible?
- 19:05Speaker 9: I didn't have as many problems. I had a lot
- 19:08Speaker 9: more good things to say about it than most people.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:11Speaker 9: So I think it's worth seeing.
- 19:12Speaker 2: But.
- 19:13Speaker 9: We did do an entire episode on Bright, so that
- 19:15Speaker 9: pushed it over the edge. This is from the soundtrack
- 19:18Speaker 9: of Bright, which actually, when I thought about it, there
- 19:20Speaker 9: was a lot of music worked in along the way.
- 19:23Speaker 9: This is Cheer Up from the Bright soundtrack by Portugal
- 19:26Speaker 9: the Man.
- 19:46Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 19:47Speaker 4: I'll tear my feet in the.
- 19:53Speaker 7: Dirt My knuckles flowing.
- 19:57Speaker 1: From deep down Deep in the earth, crush it down
- 20:17Speaker 1: You see my eyes got that glow.
- 20:52Speaker 12: These broken dreams of mine.
- 22:11Speaker 9: I think there's some good stuff going on in that movie.
- 22:14Speaker 9: There's a few weird moves, but concept, it's amazing what
- 22:17Speaker 9: they took and how grand they made that idea. Like,
- 22:21Speaker 9: do you know the premise?
- 22:23Speaker 2: No.
- 22:24Speaker 9: It's in a world that's kind of like your medieval
- 22:29Speaker 9: D & D kind of game, like if all that
- 22:31Speaker 9: were real, and yet it's modern day and now. So
- 22:34Speaker 9: it's a cop drama... Except there's orcs and fairies and
- 22:39Speaker 9: dragons and all that shit is real, but it exists
- 22:42Speaker 9: in our modern day. It's a huge concept. Like to
- 22:45Speaker 9: be able to write something like that, like that's, I
- 22:48Speaker 9: think kind of impressive because I've never really seen a
- 22:51Speaker 9: version like that before. So, and then to kind of
- 22:55Speaker 9: do it like a normal cop, you know, it's like
- 22:57Speaker 9: some sort of cop operation and other bad cops are
- 23:01Speaker 9: after them. And then there's like a gang chasing them.
- 23:03Speaker 9: So it becomes a pretty standard cop, you know, drama thing.
- 23:07Speaker 9: But yet it also exists in this world where all
- 23:09Speaker 9: this weird magic bullshit is going on. So I thought
- 23:12Speaker 9: it was kind of an interesting concept. All that aside. Again,
- 23:19Speaker 9: this is just your own personal. If you'd like to
- 23:21Speaker 9: check it out. Since Netflix produced it, I guess it's
- 23:24Speaker 9: on Netflix.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Probably. Unless they took it up because they were ashamed.
- 23:27Speaker 9: Got to work in nine other new things that nobody
- 23:30Speaker 9: will ever look at.
- 23:30Speaker 2: I know. There's too many. There's just flood.
- 23:32Speaker 9: Stuff in there and you'll never have heard of most
- 23:34Speaker 9: of it. I don't even know what to, yeah. I
- 23:35Speaker 9: don't know what to do with Netflix, but they're taking
- 23:37Speaker 9: over the world, so it doesn't really matter.
- 23:39Speaker 2: No.
- 23:40Speaker 9: I mean, most things getting produced now are getting produced
- 23:43Speaker 9: by Netflix, so hopefully you're okay with their platform because
- 23:47Speaker 9: it's going to be the only thing left.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Suck on that blockbuster.
- 23:50Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So many regrets. Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 9: Sorry about that, rental stores.
- 23:58Speaker 12: All right.
- 23:59Speaker 9: So this is... I'm just kind of rounding out last night.
- 24:04Speaker 9: And this is funny because I never... I was never
- 24:06Speaker 9: overly sold on the killers. No issues with them.
- 24:10Speaker 2: They were just.
- 24:11Speaker 9: The girl I was going out with at the time
- 24:13Speaker 9: was really into him. I remember getting that album and
- 24:15Speaker 9: like she played it a lot. I heard it a lot,
- 24:17Speaker 9: but I was just like, whatever. So it was one
- 24:19Speaker 9: of those I kind of just hadn't kept up on them.
- 24:22Speaker 9: And I was amazed how many people were here last night.
- 24:25Speaker 9: And I kept over here and I'm going, well, I'm
- 24:27Speaker 9: just kind of here. I'm just waiting for the killers tonight.
- 24:28Speaker 9: Like everybody was just like and like the I occasionally
- 24:32Speaker 9: I talk about again, no offense meant to them. I'm
- 24:35Speaker 9: using quotes, regular people. So one of these regular people
- 24:39Speaker 9: that I know in the real world, specifically, this is
- 24:42Speaker 9: the same person who went, are you excited about tonight?
- 24:44Speaker 2: And I was like, I don't know.
- 24:46Speaker 9: I go to things all the time, man. I show
- 24:48Speaker 9: up and I do the show. I don't know that
- 24:50Speaker 9: I get all keyed up about the shit anymore. I
- 24:53Speaker 9: just go do my job. So I'm covering the event.
- 24:56Speaker 9: I'll be there. But he was just like, he's so
- 25:00Speaker 9: everyday kind of a guy. And he was just like, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 9: I like the Killers. I was just like, I don't
- 25:05Speaker 9: think I realized, like, what a weird, like, sort of
- 25:08Speaker 9: mainstream following they had.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Still, yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 9: And yeah, this many years later, because that was a
- 25:13Speaker 9: long damn time ago when that first album came out.
- 25:15Speaker 9: And then, oddly enough, this morning, before we were getting
- 25:18Speaker 9: ready to come here, that, like, cbs weekend show that
- 25:22Speaker 9: actually has cbs and no like not sunday morning well
- 25:25Speaker 9: they do the sunday morning but there's a saturday one
- 25:27Speaker 9: too that's like a different version but they like the
- 25:30Speaker 9: sunday one does like amazing little mini documentary thing like
- 25:33Speaker 9: i was always impressed by how well granted they have
- 25:35Speaker 9: a ton of money to throw at it but they
- 25:37Speaker 9: do a good job but this is a yeah saturday
- 25:39Speaker 9: one kind of works like somewhere in between a morning
- 25:41Speaker 9: show and that one like their normal like their normal
- 25:44Speaker 9: weekday morning show so they usually work in music at
- 25:47Speaker 9: the end of it And it's different bands, but they
- 25:49Speaker 9: did an entire thing with the Killers this morning. And
- 25:53Speaker 9: they had two full song performances from a show they
- 25:57Speaker 9: played in Minneapolis. Or no, they played in Milwaukee.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Ooh, exotic. Milwaukee.
- 26:06Speaker 9: You may know it by its Indian name. But yeah,
- 26:10Speaker 9: it was just amazing that that level of... They're still
- 26:13Speaker 9: getting push on national... again morning tv shows like it's
- 26:19Speaker 9: weird the amount of push they get so obviously there's
- 26:23Speaker 9: a lot of killers.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Fans out there we met a couple last night while
- 26:26Speaker 2: we were out who came here from like nebraska because
- 26:29Speaker 2: the male partner was super into the killers like that
- 26:33Speaker 2: was the only reason and i'm just like wow that's
- 26:35Speaker 2: that's commitment interesting yeah that's a long good for you
- 26:39Speaker 2: and obviously.
- 26:40Speaker 9: They've been around a while because when i went to
- 26:42Speaker 9: pull a song And again, most of the other... My go-to,
- 26:46Speaker 9: and I almost played it, but I feel like that
- 26:48Speaker 9: one's been heard a million times. But to me, the
- 26:50Speaker 9: one time I'm like, all right, I'm on board with
- 26:52Speaker 9: the killers now. They're in Southland Tales. Have you seen...
- 26:58Speaker 9: This is another movie we've devoted an entire episode to.
- 27:01Speaker 9: And I still feel like after that entire episode, we
- 27:04Speaker 9: didn't even really start to address what the fuck is
- 27:08Speaker 9: going on in Southland Tales. It is amazing.
- 27:11Speaker 4: And.
- 27:14Speaker 9: It's got The Rock. It's got Sarah Michelle Gellar.
- 27:17Speaker 2: The Rock and Sarah Michelle Gellar?
- 27:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 27:21Speaker 2: That's a combo.
- 27:23Speaker 9: It's got a stellar cast, one of which, Justin Timberlake.
- 27:27Speaker 9: And in the middle of Justin Timberlake with weird heads. Again,
- 27:31Speaker 9: I think he's a soldier, so maybe he had battle damage.
- 27:33Speaker 9: I don't know. But his face isn't as pretty as
- 27:35Speaker 9: it should be when you're Justin Timberlake. But he's got
- 27:37Speaker 9: this weird scarred up face. And he's in the middle
- 27:41Speaker 9: of doing this scene. And the killer song comes on
- 27:45Speaker 9: the whole I've Got Soul But I'm Not a Soldier
- 27:48Speaker 9: starts kicking in. And then he goes into this dreamy
- 27:51Speaker 9: music video almost that goes on for the whole second
- 27:55Speaker 9: half of that song. It just becomes like a musical
- 27:57Speaker 9: number almost in the middle of a movie that's not
- 28:00Speaker 9: really a musical up until that point. And it's just
- 28:03Speaker 9: Justin looking dead at the camera doing like he's doing
- 28:06Speaker 9: a music video. And it's got, it almost is like
- 28:09Speaker 9: a light Big Lebowski with the girls in their outfits
- 28:12Speaker 9: doing the kick line because he's got girls in like,
- 28:15Speaker 9: I think they're supposed to be like medical nurses, but
- 28:17Speaker 9: it's like if you were doing a Broadway show about
- 28:20Speaker 9: medical nurses. So they're like really showy, shiny outfits and
- 28:24Speaker 9: they're doing like a kick line, but it's on a
- 28:26Speaker 9: skee ball. Instead of the bowling alley, it's like they're
- 28:29Speaker 9: lined up on ski balls.
- 28:30Speaker 2: What on earth?
- 28:32Speaker 9: Exactly. And this is kind of the least weird part
- 28:34Speaker 9: of this movie. So we might, if we need to
- 28:37Speaker 9: revisit it just so you can tell me what the
- 28:39Speaker 9: fuck's going on in South Bend Tales, we can come
- 28:41Speaker 9: back to it. That's the time.
- 28:42Speaker 2: When I was just. Is it like a comedy? What
- 28:44Speaker 2: are they going for?
- 28:45Speaker 3: I don't.
- 28:47Speaker 9: That was most of our discussion was trying to pin
- 28:49Speaker 9: down what the hell it is. I can't decide if
- 28:51Speaker 9: it's just a train wreck of a movie or utterly genius.
- 28:55Speaker 9: I don't know. Like it is so crazy town. I
- 28:58Speaker 9: can't even decide.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:00Speaker 9: So that was almost my pick, but I feel like
- 29:02Speaker 9: everybody's heard that song, but that's the one time. And again,
- 29:05Speaker 9: it always works more when it's a movie tie in
- 29:07Speaker 9: for me that I'm watching and I'm like, this is
- 29:09Speaker 9: a great moment that's working in a killer song, but
- 29:11Speaker 9: I feel like everybody knows that song. So this was
- 29:13Speaker 9: the other one I came up with. And oddly enough,
- 29:16Speaker 9: we did just talk about it on our previous Spider-Man episode.
- 29:20Speaker 9: They're on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. Now that's going back
- 29:24Speaker 9: to Spider-Mens to you guys out there. Skip over the Garfield.
- 29:28Speaker 9: Nobody liked him anyway. Go back to when people still
- 29:30Speaker 9: liked Tobey, except until they got to 3. And then
- 29:34Speaker 9: everybody hated Tobey and Sam Raimi and everything. They just
- 29:37Speaker 9: took a roll.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Was that the one where he was like, goth Spider-Man?
- 29:42Speaker 9: Emo and he's not goth spider-man nerds are gonna be
- 29:47Speaker 9: upset so there is a black clad creature if that's
- 29:51Speaker 9: what you're thinking.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Of oh so there's one where he like.
- 29:54Speaker 9: They kind of at some point he does have the
- 29:56Speaker 9: blackout bitch that comes up later even in the new
- 29:59Speaker 9: and he's got a blackout Spider-Man likes black sometimes. You
- 30:01Speaker 9: just let him branch out. He's got a big wardrobe,
- 30:05Speaker 9: especially now that he's produced by Tony Stark. He's got
- 30:08Speaker 9: a million dollar wardrobe.
- 30:09Speaker 2: He can do what he wants.
- 30:11Speaker 9: But that's not the case in old Spider-Man 3. So
- 30:15Speaker 9: it kind of took down that whole franchise. It had
- 30:18Speaker 9: to be rebooted twice to come back and really deliver.
- 30:21Speaker 9: So on that soundtrack, you'll hear Move Away by The Killers.
- 30:26Speaker 2: You do too much. You're not Superman, you know.
- 31:20Speaker 12: When you come back now, you'll see my face.
- 31:23Speaker 13: I said 25 deaths and we both pray.
- 31:25Speaker 12: While I move away.
- 31:26Speaker 6: Hard times don't come until tomorrow.
- 31:28Speaker 4: These eyes don't see, take your skin off when you're
- 31:33Speaker 4: listening to me.
- 31:35Speaker 15: While I move away, hard times don't come until tomorrow.
- 31:41Speaker 12: These eyes and.
- 31:42Speaker 13: Me take your skin off when you're talking. I said,
- 31:58Speaker 13: hold it.
- 31:59Speaker 4: To the rock and let it in.
- 32:03Speaker 12: Oh, what a world that we are in. I said,
- 32:07Speaker 12: hold it to.
- 32:08Speaker 14: The rock and we go in.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Wow.
- 32:12Speaker 14: Wow.
- 32:26Speaker 15: Take your skin off.
- 32:29Speaker 4: When you listen to me Don't.
- 32:32Speaker 13: Worry about what might have been Just tell your woman
- 32:36Speaker 13: that you're sorry And you jumped out of your.
- 32:39Speaker 12: Skin Listen closely to your mom Don't.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Worry about what might have.
- 32:43Speaker 13: Been Tell the jury that you're sorry And you jumped
- 32:47Speaker 13: out of your skin I wanna jump out of my
- 32:50Speaker 13: skin I wanna jump out of my skin And watch
- 32:53Speaker 13: the clouds.
- 32:56Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 12: When you listen to me this is.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Zach and shane from how mouth and listen to movie
- 34:32Speaker 2: meltdown movie meltdown.
- 34:35Speaker 9: Shane's got a really good movie announcer voice.
- 34:38Speaker 8: Welcome to movie meltdown in a world of total darkness.

- 36:35Speaker 9: previously mentioned guest?
- 36:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:38Speaker 9: He's pretty damn cool. He is a rock star by every,
- 36:43Speaker 9: by every account.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I mean, He had the look.
- 36:45Speaker 9: He had the vibe. He's super cool. And I've listened
- 36:48Speaker 9: to his music. He's really good. So this is we
- 36:51Speaker 9: went to sit down, and it's hard to find a
- 36:54Speaker 9: quiet place. So we kept going. We relocated our sit-down
- 36:59Speaker 9: session until we found someplace as close as we could get.
- 37:02Speaker 9: So this is our sit-down with Israel Nash.
- 37:09Speaker 12: Once the strings are too fast.
- 37:22Speaker 9: Normally I try to just kind of get where everybody
- 37:24Speaker 9: starts off. So where were you born originally?
- 37:28Speaker 3: I was born in Missouri in the Ozarks. Yeah.
- 37:33Speaker 9: And then eventually Texas. Did you purposely seek out Texas?
- 37:36Speaker 3: Well, I guess my first stop was New York City.
- 37:40Speaker 9: It's a roundabout way to get to Texas.
- 37:42Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 37:43Speaker 3: But it was a great escape, I think, from Missouri
- 37:47Speaker 3: for me and kind of finding what I always tell
- 37:50Speaker 3: people and tell younger artists, you know, find your people,
- 37:52Speaker 3: you know.
- 37:52Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Go to places where you can find more people like you.
- 37:56Speaker 3: And so that's what I did. I went to New
- 37:58Speaker 3: York and my wife and I had totaled our car,
- 38:03Speaker 3: got like $ 3, 000 and we're like, cool, we have enough
- 38:05Speaker 3: money to go to New York City. This is a fortune. Yeah,
- 38:10Speaker 3: it lasted for a week. And lived there for six years.
- 38:14Speaker 3: That's where I met my long-time engineer and a lot
- 38:19Speaker 3: of my bandmates. And really started my career and lived
- 38:22Speaker 3: there for six, seven years and moved to Texas. Bought
- 38:26Speaker 3: a ranch, a bunch of land.
- 38:28Speaker 9: I figure you can get more real estate-wise than in
- 38:30Speaker 9: New York City.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Sure, and it's cheaper than the old one-bedroom apartment there,
- 38:35Speaker 3: you know?
- 38:35Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 2: So you mentioned finding your people from the Ozarks where
- 38:39Speaker 2: you were born. How do you think that's influenced your
- 38:42Speaker 2: musical style and songwriting?
- 38:44Speaker 3: Finding my people? Well, I think that as a songwriter,
- 38:50Speaker 3: it all is a village to make all these things happen.
- 38:53Speaker 3: So I think as a songwriter, when you can find
- 38:56Speaker 3: people to help bring your ideas together more quickly and
- 39:00Speaker 3: efficiently and in a way that's fun and has energy
- 39:04Speaker 3: that's exciting. that's where, you know, good records and music
- 39:08Speaker 3: is made, and that's where friendships are forged forever, you know,
- 39:11Speaker 3: so that's a beautiful thing about music, you know, if
- 39:13Speaker 3: you're a solid person and can do your job well
- 39:17Speaker 3: and have a good time, like, you can have friends
- 39:19Speaker 3: for your entire life, so.
- 39:21Speaker 9: Well, and then you also, in addition to finding your audience,
- 39:24Speaker 9: you kind of found a very distinctive sound, so is that,
- 39:28Speaker 9: um again were you were you specifically looking for that
- 39:31Speaker 9: or it just happened along the way I.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Mean I think that for me um it seems like
- 39:37Speaker 3: the cycle of like every five years sort of uh
- 39:41Speaker 3: brings new life to something and at that period I
- 39:43Speaker 3: had moved to Texas um bought a place lived down
- 39:46Speaker 3: the country so we're straight from you know Williamsburg to
- 39:51Speaker 3: 15 acres in the middle of the hill country, um,
- 39:56Speaker 3: where they're not, people aren't close by, you know, it's
- 39:59Speaker 3: really isolated place and that's what we wanted. And, uh, yeah,
- 40:03Speaker 3: you know, I sort of wanted to make music that
- 40:05Speaker 3: kind of gave me the same feeling. I wanted to
- 40:07Speaker 3: make the sonic, you know, the soundtrack or the visuals that, um,
- 40:13Speaker 3: that are in the hill country. And that's a, it's
- 40:15Speaker 3: a unique place. Um, it's, it's only, you know, 25
- 40:19Speaker 3: miles from Austin but the the train you're just going
- 40:22Speaker 3: up a mile the whole time you know and and
- 40:25Speaker 3: all of a sudden you can see out for 30
- 40:26Speaker 3: miles into the hills so um yeah you know you
- 40:30Speaker 3: find for me like we then we had a child
- 40:33Speaker 3: we had a baby changes everything it was like cool
- 40:37Speaker 3: we're in Texas we have a house like doing music
- 40:40Speaker 3: let's let's have a baby so um and then we
- 40:43Speaker 3: built a studio you know it's just been a playground
- 40:46Speaker 3: out there of just living and My parents retired and
- 40:49Speaker 3: we sold them a couple acres. My wife's parents live
- 40:53Speaker 3: there part-time. So, you know, we've got this family compound
- 40:56Speaker 3: out in Texas and swimming pools and hot tubs and studios.
- 41:01Speaker 3: I mean, it's just a playground.
- 41:02Speaker 9: That's all you need.
- 41:03Speaker 3: And that's all we do. It's just this kind of
- 41:05Speaker 3: hillbilly lifestyle. version of all that, you know?
- 41:08Speaker 9: I mean, that's changed so much just even since you started. Like,
- 41:12Speaker 9: do you think had this happened 30, 40 years ago,
- 41:15Speaker 9: you could have never lived there and yet at the
- 41:17Speaker 9: same time had a career. So now that you can
- 41:20Speaker 9: kind of, like, you can build a home studio that's
- 41:22Speaker 9: as impressive and you can, you know, kind of leave
- 41:25Speaker 9: that there, go on tour, and then come back to
- 41:27Speaker 9: it more than before you'd have to move to a
- 41:29Speaker 9: huge city to kind of make it happen.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and gear, you know, that was pretty costly. exclusive
- 41:36Speaker 3: for for me even well off incredibly well off artists
- 41:40Speaker 3: from the 70s you don't have you know like george
- 41:43Speaker 3: harrison at a studio or you know what i mean
- 41:46Speaker 3: yeah that's it i mean even was recording on a
- 41:49Speaker 3: four-track tape recorder i mean like um.
- 41:52Speaker 9: And look he never amounted to.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Anything so yeah i mean it's become just an easier
- 41:58Speaker 3: game to get into financially you know um And so
- 42:01Speaker 3: I've been able to piece together a studio over five years,
- 42:05Speaker 3: you know, and and then when I go into other
- 42:07Speaker 3: studios and I'm like, oh, man, how's my when is
- 42:10Speaker 3: it going to happen that my studio is going to
- 42:11Speaker 3: be like this? And they're like, Israel, I've been here
- 42:14Speaker 3: for 25 years. It's like it's the constant reminder is time,
- 42:19Speaker 3: you know, it's like, but it's.
- 42:20Speaker 9: Not my stuff. I need my stuff.
- 42:24Speaker 3: So, yeah, the studio wasn't built in a day.
- 42:26Speaker 9: Of the of the sound what i guess what's a
- 42:29Speaker 9: good well if you want we can throw in some
- 42:30Speaker 9: some songs what's a good song that's kind of a
- 42:33Speaker 9: good introduction to you as far as your sound or
- 42:35Speaker 9: what you think is a good intro for people.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Um i don't know i mean i feel like i
- 42:45Speaker 3: mean i i don't know this is the catalog just
- 42:47Speaker 3: jump in i mean it's just like it's all there
- 42:49Speaker 3: for you you know it's like I mean, I think
- 42:52Speaker 3: I like sonic ideas. I like music as a place
- 42:56Speaker 3: to get lost into. And I think that it's something
- 43:01Speaker 3: that's forever healing and brings people together. And even if
- 43:06Speaker 3: it's at a festival or if it's just at home
- 43:08Speaker 3: listening privately, you know, it's like music is that, you know,
- 43:12Speaker 3: art are these, love lives in these places and we
- 43:16Speaker 3: find stuff from it. And I think after the music
- 43:20Speaker 3: stops playing, we can keep on going. And it's like,
- 43:23Speaker 3: how do we fill our lives with more of these
- 43:25Speaker 3: kinds of things? You know, like, so I don't know.
- 43:28Speaker 3: I just, the records for me are always that, that,
- 43:32Speaker 3: that connection for me personally, writing that gets me in
- 43:35Speaker 3: this meditative place of flow and focus that gives me
- 43:39Speaker 3: a refuge, you know? So, you know, that's what I
- 43:43Speaker 3: want my songs and music to do for others as
- 43:46Speaker 3: it's done for me, you know?
- 43:48Speaker 9: All right, since he won't pick a song, I will.
- 43:50Speaker 9: This is Lucky Ones by Israel Nash.
- 43:53Speaker 14: Lucky Ones by Israel Nash.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Only wins we feel, all the ones that change.
- 44:26Speaker 15: A couple of kids in and out on the skids,
- 44:30Speaker 15: dreaming the night away. I hear a rolling thunder, long
- 44:38Speaker 15: after lightning strikes.
- 44:50Speaker 12: Taking it easy to find a seat in the middle
- 44:54Speaker 12: of a bottle of wine.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Trouble within and out of our bed becomes the rising tide.
- 45:24Speaker 4: I hear the rolling thunder, the laughter loud. music music
- 45:42Speaker 4: music music music music music Oh, it's love.
- 46:17Speaker 14: For me.
- 46:23Speaker 4: And you.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Take it easy.
- 46:34Speaker 12: Find a seat.
- 46:36Speaker 14: We're all on the phone. I feel strong.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 47:39Speaker 9: Well, that's what I kind of started doing with this show, too,
- 47:42Speaker 9: is doing the crossover. Because I think, again, the way
- 47:45Speaker 9: that people, when they do it right, when they work
- 47:47Speaker 9: music into film, it becomes this whole new level. And
- 47:51Speaker 9: I think you can get things out of it that
- 47:53Speaker 9: maybe by themselves you don't get either. So I think
- 47:56Speaker 9: it's a great melding. So you've got Rain Plans in
- 48:00Speaker 9: Captain Fantastic. How did that, did they approach you? Or
- 48:03Speaker 9: how did that come together?
- 48:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they approached us together. I think it was, what's
- 48:10Speaker 3: his name, from KCRW. Someone helped put that soundtrack together. And, yeah,
- 48:15Speaker 3: we got like, it was like a two-minute long, you know,
- 48:19Speaker 3: it was a long feature, you know, for that. So, yeah,
- 48:23Speaker 3: we had a few fans from that as well. And,
- 48:25Speaker 3: you know, music, like you said, I mean, the marriage
- 48:28Speaker 3: of that. It's like, you know, I mean, what song
- 48:32Speaker 3: doesn't sound good with, you know, driving down the highway
- 48:36Speaker 3: with a bunch of hits? countryside by yourself with the
- 48:39Speaker 3: windows down at 55 miles per hour you know it's
- 48:41Speaker 3: like a bunch of music hits you like that and
- 48:44Speaker 3: that becomes the movie you know and so I do
- 48:47Speaker 3: think that like I was saying just how the hills
- 48:50Speaker 3: have inspired me to make music you know what is
- 48:53Speaker 3: that wide open space or sunshine or I don't know
- 48:57Speaker 3: just nature feeling you know I feel like there's a
- 48:59Speaker 3: lot of nature in the music you know and I
- 49:02Speaker 3: feel like that's another connection you know that we have
- 49:06Speaker 3: this ancient sort of feeling of happiness when we're in
- 49:09Speaker 3: nature and that's what it's done for me like I'm
- 49:10Speaker 3: not I've never been like a big like outdoors guy
- 49:13Speaker 3: like let's go hiking or um but I live in
- 49:16Speaker 3: the country like I want to live in there and
- 49:18Speaker 3: work in the country and you know make music and
- 49:21Speaker 3: sometimes chop down a tree or whatever i need to
- 49:23Speaker 3: do to make.
- 49:24Speaker 9: The land work you know when you record that kind
- 49:27Speaker 9: of sound too like you get actual noises from your
- 49:30Speaker 9: your while you're out on your land you actually capture
- 49:33Speaker 9: noises and kind of work it in there.
- 49:35Speaker 3: I did on the last album I was just kind
- 49:38Speaker 3: of inspired by these ideas of, you know, being in
- 49:41Speaker 3: the moment and trying to preserve ideas of the moment
- 49:45Speaker 3: by representing the place, you know, and like all the sounds.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I mean, of course, that's where I write. That's where
- 49:49Speaker 3: the records are made. But to go deeper, I was
- 49:53Speaker 3: kind of into these like John Cage ideas of like,
- 49:56Speaker 3: you know, the music is everywhere kind of concepts. And
- 49:59Speaker 3: there's music in this whole ranch. And that's what I
- 50:02Speaker 3: continue to tell my daughter who's now six years old.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Music's everywhere. And she'll just walk around the house, you know, Dad,
- 50:08Speaker 3: music's everywhere. She's, you know, banging something, you know.
- 50:12Speaker 9: You started it. Now she's going to bang on everything.
- 50:15Speaker 2: I know.
- 50:15Speaker 3: And it's awesome because she just comes to the studio
- 50:17Speaker 3: and we jam and just, like, alternate instruments. And then
- 50:21Speaker 3: she gets upset. She'll be like, Dad, it's my turn,
- 50:24Speaker 3: you know.
- 50:24Speaker 9: Quit trying to steal the spotlight, Dad.
- 50:27Speaker 3: So, yeah, I took, like, a field recorder and went
- 50:30Speaker 3: around and made all these sounds. Made, like, just copious, like,
- 50:33Speaker 3: lists of sounds that I wanted to get. you know,
- 50:35Speaker 3: like limestone banging together, like sounds from our water tank.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Like that's how we get all of our water out there.
- 50:43Speaker 3: The ranch is like, it falls on the roof, goes
- 50:45Speaker 3: into a tank, gets purified and comes in the house.
- 50:49Speaker 3: So that's also an awesome reverb tank. So I put
- 50:52Speaker 3: like drum sounds in there. And so just tried to
- 50:55Speaker 3: get these places that were sounds that represented the home
- 50:58Speaker 3: and where I'm at, you know, to kind of be
- 51:01Speaker 3: a part of the record and kind of like make
- 51:02Speaker 3: that sort of now and idea you know.
- 51:06Speaker 9: Well again with the with the crossover i we try
- 51:08Speaker 9: to do like really influential like songs that work their
- 51:11Speaker 9: way into movies are there some that have been like
- 51:13Speaker 9: ones that have stuck out for you that you really
- 51:15Speaker 9: like um you know.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Like i feel like i well i love the way
- 51:21Speaker 3: like wes anderson uses like i mean like velvet underground
- 51:24Speaker 3: like that scene in um royal tin of moms yeah
- 51:28Speaker 3: when margo gets off the bus and it breaks into
- 51:30Speaker 3: velvet underground it's like crisis I.
- 51:33Speaker 4: Don't do too much talking these days me.
- 52:04Speaker 16: These days I seem to think a lot About the
- 52:10Speaker 16: things that I forgot.
- 52:11Speaker 12: To do.
- 52:17Speaker 16: And all the times I had.
- 52:23Speaker 2: The chance to.
- 52:32Speaker 17: I stopped my rambling I don't do too much gambling.
- 52:40Speaker 4: These days These days These.
- 52:48Speaker 16: Days I seem to think about how all the changes came.
- 52:52Speaker 2: About my way.
- 52:57Speaker 16: And I wonder if I'd see another.
- 53:06Speaker 18: Highway I had a lover.
- 53:21Speaker 16: I don't think I risk another these days Me.
- 53:31Speaker 17: And if I seem to be afraid to live the
- 53:34Speaker 17: life that I have made.
- 53:36Speaker 14: It's.
- 53:40Speaker 11: Sorry.
- 53:41Speaker 16: It's just that I've been.
- 53:44Speaker 12: Losing so long.
- 54:02Speaker 4: I'll stop my dreaming I won't do too much dreaming.
- 54:15Speaker 12: These days These.
- 54:18Speaker 17: Days These days I sit on cornerstones and count the
- 54:33Speaker 17: time and quarter turns.
- 54:35Speaker 14: To ten.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Please don't confront.
- 54:41Speaker 16: Me with my failures I had not.
- 54:51Speaker 12: Forgotten them.
- 55:00Speaker 3: But I feel like I've been really into, I mean,
- 55:04Speaker 3: like more like, like the Morricone stuff has really kind
- 55:06Speaker 3: of influenced a lot of some of these sonic ideas,
- 55:09Speaker 3: you know, like good and bad, the ugly. I feel
- 55:11Speaker 3: like that's the film I try to watch every.
- 55:13Speaker 9: And he works some real, real world kind of noises.
- 55:16Speaker 3: He's got rattlesnakes.
- 55:17Speaker 9: Exactly. So, or at least mimicking them.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Exactly. So that, that has been an influence for me
- 55:23Speaker 3: for a long time. Um, I think that's, I don't really,
- 55:26Speaker 3: I don't really talk about Morricone that much, but I,
- 55:29Speaker 3: I feel like it was that sonic approach and it's
- 55:31Speaker 3: that similar scene, that Western scene that I have from
- 55:35Speaker 3: my ranch, you know, just like this is the countryside
- 55:38Speaker 3: and it's wild and it's open and it's fresh and
- 55:41Speaker 3: exciting and bold and waiting to be found and consumed,
- 55:46Speaker 3: you know? Yeah.
- 55:57Speaker 14: Go, go, go.
- 57:33Speaker 9: Alright, well what's the best place for people to find
- 57:35Speaker 9: you or get you online or see where you'll be
- 57:38Speaker 9: playing live?
- 57:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess if you just type in the old
- 57:42Speaker 3: Israel Nash into the The Google universe. There's not a
- 57:46Speaker 3: whole lot of them. It will point you in so
- 57:48Speaker 3: many directions. Years ago, it would be like, how are
- 57:51Speaker 3: they going to find you? It's like, it's everywhere.
- 57:53Speaker 9: If you put any effort in now, you can find
- 57:55Speaker 9: almost anything.
- 57:57Speaker 3: It's your fault.
- 57:59Speaker 9: It's on you, people.
- 58:01Speaker 2: All right.
- 58:02Speaker 9: Well, thank you for being here.
- 58:03Speaker 14: Awesome.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Thank you, guys.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Looking to the distance and in case you're missing A
- 58:10Speaker 4: thousand lights just faded out at once Shining from the
- 58:15Speaker 4: rooftops to a.
- 58:18Speaker 14: Ghost town.
- 58:24Speaker 9: So thank you once again to Israel for sitting down
- 58:26Speaker 9: and talking with us. And as we mentioned there, again,
- 58:28Speaker 9: while we're working in tracks from movies that people this
- 58:32Speaker 9: weekend were involved in, as we said, he's on Captain Fantastic.
- 58:36Speaker 9: And it does seem, again, if you know what's going
- 58:38Speaker 9: on in that movie, like his sound totally fits with that.
- 58:41Speaker 9: So this is another one of those. As it started playing,
- 58:44Speaker 9: I'm like, oh, yeah, I have heard this. Like it does. Again,
- 58:47Speaker 9: his sound is so signature. It kind of like locks
- 58:49Speaker 9: into your brain. And once you've heard it, you're like, oh, yeah,
- 58:51Speaker 9: I do know this guy.
- 58:52Speaker 2: So.
- 58:52Speaker 9: This is Rain Plans from Captain Fantastic.
- 59:24Speaker 4: I got rainbows written in these stones. When I throw it,
- 59:35Speaker 4: tell me where to go.
- 59:39Speaker 12: Where do I go?
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: I can't break away Just where we've.
- 1:00:26Speaker 12: Been I got new hands.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: We'll call us west again. Thank you.
- 1:02:09Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: Don't you guys like horror?
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: Don't you think everybody should join the Meltketeer Horror Club?

- 1:07:32Speaker 9: I mean, it kind of keeps us alive. I was
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: discussing the horrible... situation it's been to try to keep
- 1:07:39Speaker 9: things going earlier to these poor bastards like yeah it's
- 1:07:44Speaker 9: not just like hey i'm rich and i want your
- 1:07:46Speaker 9: money anyway it's it really does keep the show going
- 1:07:49Speaker 9: to the level that people don't realize it's kind of
- 1:07:53Speaker 9: the only way it survived this last year and a
- 1:07:55Speaker 9: half or so since we started this it's yeah so
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: it is not only greatly appreciated but it gives us
- 1:08:03Speaker 9: a Kind of a good way to come up with
- 1:08:05Speaker 9: something specific to put out there just for these people
- 1:08:09Speaker 9: that we know actually care enough to kick in.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you get a lot of great stuff for that $ 2.
- 1:08:13Speaker 9: That's what I'm saying. I like being able to craft

- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I'm Kristen.
- 1:08:50Speaker 9: We're Repeat Repeat, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 1:08:55Speaker 12: You got something that I wanted.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: An addiction challenge.
- 1:09:05Speaker 9: So tonight, Anderson. Paak is playing here. Now this time
- 1:09:09Speaker 9: I'm going to point that stage right over there. I
- 1:09:11Speaker 9: believe he's on the big stage right over there. He's
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: going to be rocking out this evening. And he happens
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: to be on, I don't know if you saw this,
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: I was a sucker for this movie. Now maybe just
- 1:09:21Speaker 9: because I'm also like a sucker for the star. Did
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: you see Edge of Seventeen?
- 1:09:26Speaker 17: No.
- 1:09:28Speaker 9: It's recent, 2016.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Is that like a Stevie Nicks biopic?
- 1:09:33Speaker 8: No.
- 1:09:33Speaker 18: Oh.
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: You wish.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: I do wish.
- 1:09:35Speaker 9: You would put on your crazy fringy outfits and go
- 1:09:39Speaker 9: spin around in circles and watch that Stevie Nicks biopic,
- 1:09:41Speaker 9: wouldn't you?
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I dress like the 14-year-olds here, but in the privacy
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: of my own home.
- 1:09:48Speaker 9: Which I'm sure you do. You do not have near
- 1:09:50Speaker 9: enough glitter on today to be one of these girls.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: I opted out.
- 1:09:55Speaker 9: So yes, Hailee Steinfeld. She's, I think, an amazing actress anyway.
- 1:10:01Speaker 9: It's one of the few times I'm super impressed by
- 1:10:04Speaker 9: the fact that this great actress also happens to be
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: half the songs you hear on pop radio now. There's
- 1:10:10Speaker 9: few times that people cross over that have that much
- 1:10:14Speaker 9: success in both fields. She's pulled like a J-Lo. She's
- 1:10:17Speaker 9: actually really kind of working both ends of it and
- 1:10:20Speaker 9: successful on both ends. This is one of her movies,
- 1:10:25Speaker 9: and I don't know if they even worked her into
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: that soundtrack, but they did work in Anderson. Paak. He
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: does I Am Wrong, and this is from Hayley's movie,
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: The Edge of Seventeen, which she's also awesome.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: I look at you, and I just.
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: See this really, really, really old man.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: I'm complimenting you.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: I just, I see this very kind, very gentle, very
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: wise old man in a convalescent home, in a wheelchair.
- 1:10:55Speaker 14: I Am Wrong i'm only coming out to play nothing
- 1:11:03Speaker 14: more that i hate in this life the wrong impression
- 1:11:08Speaker 14: i only have one to make.
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: You can open your palm waiting to catch a break.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: The cards are far where they may.
- 1:11:29Speaker 12: And what about me?
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: I believe in fate.
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: They want to know where I'll be in five.
- 1:11:41Speaker 12: But what about today?
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: What about tonight?
- 1:11:45Speaker 12: Only one at a time.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: So precious.
- 1:11:50Speaker 7: It's yours.
- 1:11:53Speaker 12: It's mine. Only one at a time. My life.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: My life.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: Am I wrong to assume if she can't dance, then
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: she can't... Yeah. Am I wrong to say if.
- 1:12:15Speaker 9: She can't dance.
- 1:12:16Speaker 12: Does she care?
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 1:12:18Speaker 12: Hey, I never want to waste your time. My life.
- 1:12:23Speaker 12: So precious. Is yours?
- 1:12:26Speaker 17: Is mine.
- 1:12:27Speaker 12: And look at the time. My God. So precious. Is yours?
- 1:12:35Speaker 12: Is mine. Only one at a time.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: So precious. It's yours.
- 1:12:43Speaker 12: It's mine. Only one at a time. My life. My life.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:02Speaker 12: Smells around the clock. Pants around the globe. Disco 54.
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: I stash you in the eyes.
- 1:13:06Speaker 12: Spank you on your toes. Music and music without soul.
- 1:13:10Speaker 12: Filling the top row. Shot through blindfolds.
- 1:13:12Speaker 9: Pass the nitro.
- 1:13:13Speaker 14: Rock the love boat.
- 1:13:14Speaker 12: Get high to get low. Kill the merlot. Stab in
- 1:13:17Speaker 12: your fast boat. You pick up your gongos.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Make love once or more.
- 1:13:21Speaker 12: We rest in our car. Do that, that, that.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Break you off in your kit kat kat.
- 1:13:26Speaker 12: Never seen a one this gorgeous. Gorgeous.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: So precious is yours is mine.
- 1:13:33Speaker 12: And look at the time. My God. So precious.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: It's yours.
- 1:13:58Speaker 14: It's mine.
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: I never want to waste your time. So precious is yours.
- 1:14:40Speaker 12: It's mine.
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: And look at the time. So precious is yours.
- 1:14:48Speaker 12: It's mine.
- 1:14:55Speaker 10: Jet ski!
- 1:15:11Speaker 9: Do you wish that was you right now?
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Kind of. Except I don't know if I'd get in
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: that river.
- 1:15:15Speaker 9: Would you wipe out? Would you slam into the bridge?
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and just run into the bridge. And die. That
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: would be a fun place to watch everything for free.
- 1:15:26Speaker 9: See, I think occasionally you'll see people with their boats
- 1:15:29Speaker 9: sneak up here and just sort of hang around and
- 1:15:31Speaker 9: listen to the music.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Especially later in the evening when the sun goes down.
- 1:15:33Speaker 9: Yeah, you're not out in the sun. It's got a
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: nice breeze going. You're listening to music for free. See,
- 1:15:39Speaker 9: those teenagers should grow up and be rich people and
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: buy a boat and then they don't have to jump
- 1:15:43Speaker 9: the fence. What a dork. Look at that douche. Look
- 1:15:48Speaker 9: at this idiot. He's trying to do cool tricks on
- 1:15:50Speaker 9: his jet ski. He's going to wipe out watching.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: I hope he runs into the bridge. That'll teach you.
- 1:15:56Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:15:59Speaker 9: I think we're winding down. It's hot. I'm getting worn out.
- 1:16:03Speaker 9: How about you?
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: How long have we been talking? What is time?
- 1:16:07Speaker 9: Hours and hours out here by the sea and or river.
- 1:16:10Speaker 9: It's as close as we get here.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: It's a beautiful view.
- 1:16:14Speaker 9: It's a nice view. I don't know, backed into this
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: truck is the best way to view it, but, you know,
- 1:16:18Speaker 9: it's nice enough.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: You can see the Hooters over in southern Indiana.
- 1:16:22Speaker 9: Hi, Hoosiers. We're waving to them. No, Hooters.
- 1:16:25Speaker 14: Oh.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: Like the restaurant, but also the Hoosiers.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: It's the Hoosier Hooters.
- 1:16:29Speaker 9: Oh, God. You said that, not me.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Yep. I like it, though.
- 1:16:39Speaker 9: So, we're rounding it out, and as of rounding out
- 1:16:42Speaker 9: this weekend, closing out Sunday night, The Avett Brothers. Yeah.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Always a classic. Likeable.
- 1:16:51Speaker 9: That's another one of those that like a lot of
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: they've crossed over. They're not they're not the same group
- 1:16:55Speaker 9: as the killers, but they have kind of that same following.
- 1:16:58Speaker 9: It's just a different group. Everybody in their weird little
- 1:17:00Speaker 9: subsections and groups. And so this is more of like
- 1:17:03Speaker 9: when you're hanging out the coffee crowd, you'll hear people
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: like I was at the Avett Brothers show and I
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: did this. They'll be wearing their like tour shirts.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:11Speaker 9: They'll be super cool. Super cool.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: They had a documentary recently produced or directed or both
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: by Judd Apatow.
- 1:17:19Speaker 9: That makes sense then.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: I watched it. And? Yeah. It was good. Honestly, I
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: was Like, my boyfriend kept trying to talk me into
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: watching it. And I was like, it's going to be
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: really sad because the bassist's daughter had, like, brain cancer
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: when she was little. And I was like, I know
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: they're going to talk about that and it's going to
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: make me cry. It's not going to be uplifting. But
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: it was really sweet. It was nice. And one of them,
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: I can't remember which one, is married to Jennifer Carpenter,
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: a Louisville native who was Deb in Dexter.
- 1:17:48Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:49Speaker 9: I know her.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Yeah. So, that's probably why they come play in Louisville
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: so much, actually.
- 1:17:53Speaker 9: Yeah, I see her starting to cross over at conventions,
- 1:17:56Speaker 9: so I'm hoping to sucker her in on a future episode.
- 1:17:59Speaker 9: Because we have hometown tie-in, man.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:18:02Speaker 9: Kentucky connections, man. Louisville. So, yeah, we'll see if we
- 1:18:06Speaker 9: can work her in. But, I don't know if we'll
- 1:18:09Speaker 9: get the whole band. So, we'll just have to settle
- 1:18:10Speaker 9: for this as we round things out here. So, otherwise, before...
- 1:18:16Speaker 9: I out this. And the reason that that makes sense
- 1:18:18Speaker 9: when we get to which movie this is. We do
- 1:18:22Speaker 9: want to say thank you to Forecastle.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Thank you, Forecastle.
- 1:18:24Speaker 9: For letting us come here, hang out by the river.
- 1:18:26Speaker 9: We didn't have to jump a fence. We did not
- 1:18:29Speaker 9: jump a fence, thank you very much. We were legit.
- 1:18:31Speaker 9: We went through proper channels and we covered the event
- 1:18:33Speaker 9: like a professional media operation that we are.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Very professional.
- 1:18:37Speaker 9: We are very professional. I think Israel was very impressed
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: with us. We conducted ourselves very.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Nicely in the interview. Yes.
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: His PR person was happy.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Eye contact.
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: Yeah, I think we did a fine job.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Are these tiny little insect wings?
- 1:18:53Speaker 9: Yeah, there's a lot of them, by the way.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:18:56Speaker 9: So whatever it was that was over here has eaten
- 1:18:59Speaker 9: all of these, but he left the wings just for you.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: That's a horrifying image. I just now realized.
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: I'm concocting a monster in my head now that eats
- 1:19:09Speaker 9: these bugs. He's pretty cool. And he's purple, I'll have
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: you know. But yes, thank you to Fourcastle to find
- 1:19:18Speaker 9: out about, you know, as you've heard in the past,

- 1:20:27Speaker 12: All it'll take is just one moment and.
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: You can say goodbye to how we had it planned.
- 1:20:43Speaker 19: Fear like a habit, run like.

- 1:24:48Speaker 2: That's the longest boat I've ever seen.
- 1:24:49Speaker 9: Does it say Sonic? Is it a hedgehog?
- 1:24:54Speaker 17: Oh.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Is it a Sonic the Hedgehog promotional belt?
- 1:24:57Speaker 9: Does it have big square teeth that's creeping us out
- 1:24:59Speaker 9: right now? Teens.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: Okay, we scared them off.
