- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone, welcome back to the Astrology for Beginners podcast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Stephanie Kate Boucher, and I am so happy to have you here.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This is the podcast for you if you have ever wanted to learn how to read a natal
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: chart or were kind of interested in astrology and wished that you understood more
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: about it but didn't know where to begin or it seemed too complicated and you didn't
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: have the time or the resources to invest in learning it.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: My goal is to break things down for you episode by episode in the most simplified
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: way that I can so that you can learn to speak the language of the stars.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Thank you for learning astrology with me.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Welcome, my friends.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: We are now opening up a new theme for our next few conversations.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Today is the day when we will start talking about all of those colorful,
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: sometimes messy-looking little lines running through the center of your natal chart.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Some of those lines are probably red,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: some of them are probably blue,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: some are thick and bold,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: some are thinner,
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: and possibly,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: probably,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: they are overlapping and making all kinds of weird geometric-looking designs.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: So all of this is to say that we are going to be talking about aspects.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So if you've been wondering what that big jumble of lines is in the middle of your chart,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: you now get to start the process of finding out.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: There are actually many different types of aspects in astrology,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: but there are five major aspects,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: conjunctions,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: oppositions,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: trines,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: sextiles,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: and squares,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: and those are the ones that have the most impact on our personalities and our
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: day-to-day lives.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: In fact, I'm not going to cover all of those major aspects today.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Doing so would take too long,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: and I wouldn't be able to cover each one of them in as much depth as I would like.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to spread this out a bit, break them up, and cover all five over...
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I think probably three episodes or so, including this one.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Today,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: we'll cover conjunctions only,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: because I have quite a lot to say about them,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: and I think that's the simplest one to start with.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Before we get into conjunctions,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: though,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: let's just talk for a couple of minutes about aspects generally.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Like, what is an aspect in astrology?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: What is it at all?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: an aspect represents the relationship that two planets have with each other based
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: on their position in the sky.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, all the planets and celestial bodies in the sky are constantly moving.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So in our daily lives, these aspects between individual planets are constantly changing.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: But in our natal charts,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: they are fixed because,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: our natal chart is a snapshot of the sky that we were under at the moment of our birth.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: So the aspects that the planets were making with each other at the moment of our
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: birth are going to be the aspects that are in our natal chart for life.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: The energies that these aspects in our natal chart create contribute to our overall
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: personalities individually.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: and the types of experiences we're likely to have,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: the talents and shortcomings that we have,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: as well as the lessons that we are here to learn and grow from.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So let's pull back from that for a minute and use an analogy that I think will
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: hopefully be easy for most people to understand.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Imagine that you are living in a neighborhood.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Assumably, you probably are, or maybe you're in an apartment building or something.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Same type of thing.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Imagine you're either real or hypothetical neighborhood.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe in that neighborhood, you are friendly with your next door neighbor.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You may or may not spend a lot of time with this person,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: but you see them around and you like them well enough and they don't really cause
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: any problems for you.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So that's great.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: You two are cool.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But maybe the person who lives directly across from you is a bit of a challenge.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: You never seem to share the same perspective on anything or have the same opinion on anything.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: You see the world differently and you don't do things the same way.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So that relationship might feel like a strain to you.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: You're trying to get along.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You're trying to find common ground.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: You're making an effort.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: You both have good intentions.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And you're both aware that you both have good intentions.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: But it's difficult.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And then there are the people around you who you just don't talk to that much.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: They're not causing you any problems or anything.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: You just never really see them.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Your paths never seem to cross.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: And you don't engage with them in any real meaningful way.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: You know they're there, but that's about it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: There could also be someone on your street who you are very good friends with.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: You get along famously.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: You help each other out all the time.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: You do each other favors.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: You like to get together and have a good time.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: They're like a bestie.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, maybe there's that other person who lives on the other side of the street.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Three houses down, and this is the neighbor that you just really butt heads with.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: You have a hard time getting along with this person,
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: and it always feels like they are actively causing you problems and getting in your way.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're mowing their lawn at 6 a.m.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: on a Sunday when you're trying to sleep in,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: or you're having a party on Saturday night,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: but they're complaining about the noise and threatening to call the cops or something.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: You don't like their holiday decorations or their lawn ornaments or the rusty old
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: RV parked in their driveway,
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: or they don't like yours.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And now they're, you know, knocking on your door, complaining about it to you all the time.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: You simply do not do things the same way.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And in fact, the things that each of you does is always getting in the other person's way.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And then,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: and I should have said this in the beginning,
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: some of us have people living with us in our own home or even in our own room.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And those people, maybe they're your family or your partner or your roommate.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: They're a big part of your life.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: You spend all your time with them.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So much so that you not only have come to share a lot of the same traits,
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: but their personalities might be sort of blended in with your own now.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: You've taken on each other's traits and likenesses because you're so close.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Kind of like those spouses that have been together for 50 years or something and
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: now they even look alike.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: So
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: In any neighborhood, you might have all of these relationships going on simultaneously.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: This neighborhood, as I'm describing it, is kind of like the planets in your natal chart.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Each planetary body is like one of these people.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And each planetary body has a particular relationship with each of the other
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: planets in your chart,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: aka the neighborhood,
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: that can be either friendly,
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: challenging,
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: or neutral.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And whether or not the relationship is friendly,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: challenging,
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: or neutral is determined by geometry,
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: essentially.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Depending on where any two planets are in the sky at a given time, there are some geometric angles
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: between those two planets that promote either a blending of energy,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: like a fusing of two or more energies together,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: a friendly and easy exchange of energy,
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: an opposing energy,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: or a really challenging energy exchange that just tends to get things all jammed up.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And the vast majority of us have some combination of all these things, or most of these things,
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: in our charts,
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: meaning that we all have some aspects present in our charts that are going to
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: promote ease in our life and others that feel difficult to manage.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: And that's to be expected because that's the human experience, right?
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Sometimes easy, sometimes hard.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So today we're talking about conjunctions.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And a conjunction happens when two or sometimes more planets are in very close
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: proximity to each other in the chart.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: typically within 8 to 10 degrees of each other.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And by the way,
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: when I say degrees,
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about all those tiny little lines around the perimeter of your chart.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: They look like minutes on a clock.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: There are 30 degrees in each zodiac sign,
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: remember,
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: and each planet or angle or anything in your chart is at a particular degree of the
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: sign that it's in.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: So look at your chart and you'll want to look for any two or more planets that are
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: within about 8 to 10 degrees of each other.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: It kind of depends on the planet.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Some planets extend their light or their energy over a farther range than others.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: The luminaries,
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: which is to say the sun and the moon,
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: I would definitely use an orb of 10 degrees in either direction.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: For the other planets, probably not more than 8 or so.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Now this aspect,
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: the conjunction,
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: amplifies the energies of both planets involved,
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: increasing their significance in your life.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Conjunctions are significant.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: And they blend their influences together.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: This is like a fusing of two energies together,
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: like the spouses or close family members living together that I talked about in the
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: neighborhood analogy.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: It's not really an especially positive or negative or like,
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: should I say,
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: easy or challenging aspect necessarily.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: That depends more on the personalities of the planets involved.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It's more just that the conjunction is really significant,
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: like your spouse or your family that live with you are significant.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: You're taking two separate,
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: distinct energies here and merging them,
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: blending them together in order to create something entirely new.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: They don't necessarily function individually when they're in conjunction.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: So a Saturn-Venus conjunction,
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: is not just Venus on its own doing Venus things and being very Venus-like,
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: and Saturn on its own doing Saturn things and being Saturn-like.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Venus and Saturn together create a new thing altogether.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: where you're then taking the energies of each of these planets and making them more like each other.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: So in this case,
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: if Venus were about relationships and Saturn were about where we feel restricted or
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: where we face challenges or lessons,
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: because that's all a challenge really is,
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: is a lesson or a learning curve of some kind.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: then this would be a person who feels, possibly, challenged in relationships in some way.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Maybe they have a hard time forming close relationships initially in their life.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they have a hard time showing affection initially.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe they've had difficult relationships or have been in relationships with people
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: who have been hard on them somehow.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they have a hard time letting their hair down,
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: so to speak,
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: and just enjoying themselves or enjoying the pleasures of life,
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: because Venus is also about pleasure.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So maybe they have a hard time allowing themselves to have what they want in life
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: because they're trying to be really disciplined all the time,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: right?
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Discipline is equated with Saturn.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they're just very shy and that's been a big barrier.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Sounds tough, right?
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: But then again, it's not necessarily all bad or all difficult with this conjunction either.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: If you're blending in Saturn's more positive attributes with Venus,
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: even though Saturn often gets a bad rap,
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: This is probably also someone who is extremely loyal in relationships or who takes
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: their relationships very seriously and who is willing to put in the work when it
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: comes to relationships.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And they probably like relationships that last a long time.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: time because Saturn is associated with longevity and creating structures that last.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: So this could also indicate someone who is really good at building communities or community structures.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Maybe,
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: maybe they're able to bring people together and create a structure for a group of
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: people and be like the builder of a community or the glue that holds people together,
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: like a matriarch archetype.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: This could be especially true as this person ages and progresses farther into their life.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Saturn placements,
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: as a general rule,
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: tend to be more challenging and difficult to deal with early in life when you're
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: lacking experience.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: They create challenges for us to learn and grow from.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: But because they create challenges,
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: we're forced to always be facing that thing and working on that thing.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And then we can eventually become masterful at that thing if we keep putting in the effort.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: So the farther into our life that we get,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: we have the opportunity to really tap into the positive side of Saturn.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So that's just one example of how this blending of energy in a conjunction can work.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Every set of conjunct planets will be different, obviously.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Venus with Mercury as a different example could manifest as having a strong desire,
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Venus is our desires,
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: to express your thoughts and opinions.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: That's Mercury.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Or it could indicate that you have a love,
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Venus,
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: of learning,
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Mercury,
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: or a love of socializing,
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: or that you're very good at diplomacy because Venus is about partnership and
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: harmony and Mercury is about communicating and having interactions with people.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: So this could be harmonious interactions with others or maybe just being really charming.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Venus conjunct your natal moon,
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: as yet another example,
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: could indicate that your inner identity or your emotional landscape,
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: right,
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: because that's the moon,
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: is very much flavored by the qualities associated with Venus.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Having harmonious relationships rather than prickly ones is probably very important
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: for a person like this and their sense of inner peace and well-being.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: This person would probably be a very kind and generous and gentle person.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Probably someone other people like and get along with easily.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: This person would be amiable.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: maybe even cheerful quite a lot of the time.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: This person might be a really good caregiver or a very nurturing parent or a good
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: health care provider or any kind of service provider because service with a smile
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: would be a term that could work here pretty well.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Someone like this might also really enjoy having some luxury in their life because
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Venus loves the finer things.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: And so someone may feel like they need a bit of luxury or they need enough material
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: resources in order to feel secure because the moon is about what makes us feel secure.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Romantic love could be something very important here, like the type of person who is in love with love.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: They love the idea of love and they always like to have a love interest in their life.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: So again,
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: All of these conjunctions that I've just used as examples involve Venus,
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: but they're all very different because in each one of them,
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Venus is being fused with a different planet and a different type of energy.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: There's a different blending there.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: So if you want to figure this out in your own chart, here's what I recommend that you do.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Grab a notebook.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: and pick a sheet of paper and divide that sheet of paper into three columns.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Write down the name of the first planet at the top of column one and then in column
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: one write down all of the traits,
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: characteristics,
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: attributes,
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: and associations you know about for that planet.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And if you can't remember which attributes are associated with which planets,
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: go back and listen to the episode on,
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: or episodes,
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: I should say,
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: on planets.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And then you're going to do the same thing in column two for the second planet.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Write down everything you can think of that's associated with that planet.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Then in the third column you're going to experiment with this by writing down the
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: different things from each column that you could put together.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: So like in the Venus Mercury example, in the Venus column you could list things like
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: relationships,
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: love,
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: desire,
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: creativity,
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: diplomacy,
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: peace and harmony,
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: financial security,
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: or abundance,
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: and all of these Venus types of things.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: And in the other column for Mercury,
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: you'd maybe write down things like intellect,
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: thinking,
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: learning,
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: communication,
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: writing,
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: socializing,
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: networking,
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: making connections,
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: commerce,
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: and all of those sorts of Mercurial things.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: And then in the third column,
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: you can try putting different combinations of these things together until you come
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: up with stuff that fits your personality and things that you think are showing up
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: in your life.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Like you have a desire to make a lot of social connections, right?
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: So desire, Venus, social connections, Mercury.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: You love to write poetry, love, Venus, Venus.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: poetry or writing, Mercury.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: You have a lot of very creative ideas.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Creativity, Venus, ideas, Mercury.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: So you get the idea.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: I also want to just quickly add here that sometimes more than two planets can be conjunct at once.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: You might have three or four planets conjunct.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: That's a little bit more rare, but it does happen.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: If that's you, you can still do this exercise.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: You'll need more columns,
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: and it does get a bit more complicated,
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: and it may take you a little longer to feel it out,
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: but it can be done.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I think this activity still works.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about the sun for a minute because conjunctions with the sun are pretty significant.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: The sun is your ego and the sun is your identity.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: And so when you have a planet conjunct your natal sun,
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: that planet's energy kind of becomes integral to your identity because
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Planets that are conjunct the sun are actually,
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: there's a term for this in astrology,
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: and it's called combustion.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: When a planet is within 10 degrees of the sun, it's considered to be combust.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And that's because the sun is very bright.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: And when another planet occupies the same spot in the sky as the sun,
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: or they're very close together in the sky,
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: the sun's rays make that planet impossible for us to see.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: You can no longer see it in the sky.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: It's washed out.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: It's still there, but it's kind of absorbed into the sun's light or into the sun's space.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: So that planet that's occupying the sun's space can't really shine on its own in
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: that position or function independently there.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: it kind of loses its individual power.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: But what that planet does do then is express itself through the identity of the sun.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Like this planet can only express itself through your identity and through your ego.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: So you would be,
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: if you had a planet conjunct the sun,
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: you would be very identified with the positive energy
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: and or negative traits of this planet, and you may not really be able to separate yourself from them.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: This can be both gifting and challenging, of course, like everything in astrology always is.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Let's use an example.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: I'll stop picking on Venus for a minute and choose a different planet.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: If you had,
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: say,
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: your sun conjunct Jupiter,
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: you could possibly become very self-identified with the traits that we associate
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: with Jupiter.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: You would possibly be very philosophical, have a great love of learning.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: You might be someone who wants to be very expansive and are always searching for
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: new experiences and seeking personal growth of some sort.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: You might also be very spiritual.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe also you have the power to become charismatic or very inspiring to other people.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Some people with this placement might end up with a larger than life persona in some cases.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And all of these things,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: all these aforementioned things could be the case to the point where you really see
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: this set of traits as who you are at your core.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And you can't separate yourself or your identity from those traits.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And that's not bad, per se.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: There are a lot of gifts there, in fact.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: But it can also create some blind spots.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: A combustion typically does create some blind spots.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: So, for example, Jupiter rules our beliefs.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And so it would also be possibly the case here that you could become completely
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: identified with your beliefs.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: You see your beliefs as who you are,
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: not something you have or something you hold,
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: but who you actually are.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Other people might be able to see their beliefs and other people's beliefs as just beliefs.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Just because somebody believes something doesn't tell you everything you need to know about them, right?
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: It's not necessarily who they are.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: It's just a belief and beliefs can change.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: But for the Jupiter combust person,
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: the Jupiter conjunct sun person,
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: there's a risk of equating the beliefs with the person themselves.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Like,
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: I believe this,
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: and this is the kind of person that I am,
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: and I can't possibly relate to you now that I know that that's what you believe.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: What kind of person believes that?
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Instead of maybe taking a moment to think that maybe they just,
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: the other person believes that now because of what they've experienced in their own
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: life up to this point.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: That kind of thing.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: It doesn't necessarily have to be that extreme.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Again, just an example.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Similarly, someone with a combust mercury, which...
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: Lots of people actually have because Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: It never gets more than, you know, a sign away from the sun.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: It's about 25% of people, I think I heard, that actually have Mercury around.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: combust their sun.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: And so this person may have some blind spots around communication, for example.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe this person would sometimes not notice how their communication style is
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: impacting other people,
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: or not always realizing how they're coming across to other people.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Or maybe they talk about themselves a lot, or they talk over other people in conversation.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Or they might interrupt people and not realize that that's what they're doing.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it's the opposite and someone has had a hard time speaking up because
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: speaking up makes them nervous.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: These are just examples.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to be these exact or specific things.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Also with this one,
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: though,
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: and I want to say on the positive side,
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: there could also be some really interesting gifts from Mercury there as well.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: You'd probably be pretty adept at some mercurial trait or another.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: that could become a really big part of your identity and who you are.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Very little in astrology is completely one way or the other.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: So always try and look for both the gifts and the challenges of every aspect that you're ever looking at.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: There's actually a lot more I could say about combustion and all the nuances of it.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: I won't go over all of it today because things would get way too long,
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: but I do think maybe I'll do an episode on it later because there is more.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: For now, though, just know that the traits of a planet conjunct the sun are infused into your identity.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: They become directed toward the self and
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: And in some ways,
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: you're gifted by those traits,
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: but this can also lead to potential blind spots due to becoming over-identified
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: with those tendencies.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: The last thing I want to talk about today as we begin to wrap up this discussion on
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: conjunctions is conjunctions with things in your natal chart that aren't planets,
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: like one of your four angles or one of your lunar nodes.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned in the prior episode on angles,
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: anytime you have a planet that is conjunct with an angle,
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: it significantly,
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: significantly elevates the importance of that angle for you.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: And it infuses that part of your life that the angle represents with the themes of that planet.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: So if your sun is conjunct your midheaven,
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: then career and reputation are a big,
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: big thing for you.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: And you probably have a real ability to shine in that part of your life.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Your identity may be very forward-facing or outward-facing or very public with a placement like that.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Venus conjunct the midheaven could indicate a very creative career,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Mercury an intellectual one or a communicative one.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Planets conjunct the IC or DC emphasize the importance of those parts of life for you,
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: your home and family,
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: or your relationships and partnerships.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And lots of your life lessons and personal growth will take place in those areas.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: And so to think more about what that means,
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: you're going to look at the planetary energy that's there for clues about specific themes.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: The lunar nodes, same types of things.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: And I keep going back to Venus,
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: but I actually think it helps keep some consistency here for comparison's sake.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Venus conjunct the north node could mean that you are trying to move toward having
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: experiences that are influenced by love and beauty or creativity.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're trying to become...
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: a more creative person or bloom into your creativity more,
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: or you're trying to learn how to enjoy life's pleasures more,
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: or you want to become more relationship oriented or more diplomatic or something
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: like that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: If it were the south node paired with Venus, that would be different.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: That might be about learning how to let go of relationships that don't work for you
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: or let go of relationship patterns that don't work for you or that you've outgrown.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Planets that are on the south node or conjunct with the south node show you what
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: types of traits or behaviors or patterns you may be trying to move past.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And if you have a lunar node conjunct an angle,
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: well,
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: that's going to be about moving toward the themes of that angle with the north node
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: or moving away from the themes of an angle with the south node and emphasizing that
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: part of your life a little less than before.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Just keep in mind here that neither angles or nodes are physical, tangible objects.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: They are mathematical points, and so they don't push out light or energy in the same way that planets do.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: So when you look at these conjunctions, you're going to make the orb much smaller.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe three degrees apart or less is probably best, but certainly I'd say five degrees or less.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: And with any kind of conjunction, the tighter the orb you have, the stronger the effect is going to be.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: So planets conjunct by,
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: zero degrees or one degree especially,
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: or planets conjunct by two or three degrees is much stronger in its effect than
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: planets conjunct by seven degrees or eight degrees,
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: even though they're all technically conjunctions.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, that feels like a lot to me.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: I hope that didn't overwhelm you.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: You can see now why I wanted to divide these angles up.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Let's stop for now.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: But next week, we'll continue with more aspects.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: If you have an extra few seconds, I'd love it if you could rate or review this podcast.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: That will really help the show and make sure that more people can find it.
