Latest / Foul Territory / Shohei headed for the BENCH?! Brian Anderson joins FT to talk ALCS, Joe Espada talking to Mariners
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, happy Tuesday. Fun one yesterday. We had our show,
- 0:06Speaker 1: we had the games, then we had a post-game show.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We covered both games in that post-game show, so if
- 0:11Speaker 1: you missed anything there, go for it. All of it's
- 0:13Speaker 1: still very relevant before we get ready for the next
- 0:16Speaker 1: one in the ALCS. And in the American League, AJ,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we do have a little bit of news before we
- 0:22Speaker 1: dive back into the postseason. We've spoken about Joe Espada's
- 0:26Speaker 1: unique situation. The Astros appear to be letting his contract
- 0:31Speaker 1: run out and then maybe they'll figure out what they're
- 0:34Speaker 1: doing with him. I think it's a little bit rude,
- 0:37Speaker 1: but the news here from Mark Feinsand is that he's
- 0:40Speaker 1: actually going to chat with the Seattle Mariners about their
- 0:43Speaker 1: open position and the Astros are giving him permission to
- 0:47Speaker 1: do so. It's weird because I guess the contract doesn't end,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but it ends soon and he doesn't have an extension.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I mean, this is as lame of a duck as
- 0:55Speaker 1: you can get like, Hey, we're going to make you
- 0:57Speaker 1: play out the last season. without a contract, and then
- 1:00Speaker 1: we're not going to let you know still.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Here's my question. How did this get out? Who leaked this, right?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Because did it leak from the Astros side? Did it
- 1:10Speaker 2: leak from the Mariners side? Because this had happened and
- 1:13Speaker 2: nobody knew about it for a while, and now all
- 1:15Speaker 2: of a sudden somebody told somebody something, and I don't
- 1:18Speaker 2: think it came from Joe Espada. So I don't know
- 1:21Speaker 2: where this came from, but it's interesting that this is
- 1:24Speaker 2: getting out now. And I hope it works out for Joe.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I think Joe's an awesome manager. He's an awesome dude
- 1:29Speaker 2: to talk to. He's one of my favorites to go
- 1:31Speaker 2: in and sit down with. I mean, he'll tell you
- 1:33Speaker 2: straight up where we stand. He's an awesome family guy.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he's got pictures of his family
- 1:38Speaker 2: all over his office. And he's done a really good
- 1:40Speaker 2: job in Houston. I'm sorry, but with the resources he
- 1:43Speaker 2: was given and the injuries he had to deal with,
- 1:45Speaker 2: to get him into the postseason this year was a
- 1:48Speaker 2: really great job.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Wait, but, Kratz, before you jump in, AJ, everything gets
- 1:55Speaker 1: broken eventually. he has to go to the Astros and
- 1:58Speaker 1: ask them for permission because he's under contract. And then
- 2:01Speaker 1: he's chatting with the Mariners. He's not just talking to
- 2:04Speaker 1: one person with Seattle. So, and same thing probably with Houston, right?
- 2:08Speaker 1: So plenty of people that.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Could, I understand that.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's just, I mean, that's how news gets broken.
- 2:13Speaker 2: No, I know. It's just funny that, you know, somebody
- 2:15Speaker 2: obviously leaked it to, to, to Mark and then McTaggart
- 2:18Speaker 2: and forget who the other person when that tweet was
- 2:20Speaker 2: that wrote the story. But, Somebody had to leak it
- 2:23Speaker 2: to them, whether it was Astro's side. I would say
- 2:26Speaker 2: it's the Astro's side leaking it. I don't know that,
- 2:28Speaker 2: but I don't know why. The Mariners, why would they
- 2:30Speaker 2: want that out there? But I feel like the Astro's
- 2:32Speaker 2: side would leak it because they want to know, hey,
- 2:35Speaker 2: you know, we're trying here. We haven't given up on Joe,
- 2:38Speaker 2: but he also wants to talk to other people. It's
- 2:41Speaker 2: not you. It's me, Kratz. It's not you. It's me.
- 2:46Speaker 2: The numbers are just going to work out. Look, he's
- 2:49Speaker 2: a great manager. There's openings.
- 2:51Speaker 4: It's weird that he hasn't had any connection with Dombrowski
- 2:55Speaker 4: over in Philly because that's one of the other openings.
- 2:57Speaker 4: But he knows the division. Like, to me, if I'm
- 3:01Speaker 4: the Mariners, I'm just waiting. I'm sitting there and I'm going, okay, okay, okay.
- 3:05Speaker 2: October 31st. Gotcha.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Like, he's clearly a guy that, in my opinion, knowing
- 3:11Speaker 4: him but not knowing Dan Wilson at all, would definitely
- 3:15Speaker 4: bring a new voice, a different type of voice. to
- 3:19Speaker 4: that locker room that has good players in it, just
- 3:21Speaker 4: has underachieved.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I like the call-out about knowing your division. I mean,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you bring someone over who's been a rival, and you're like,
- 3:28Speaker 1: tell me everything. So that could be Joe Espada in
- 3:30Speaker 1: this situation for Seattle. They wanted, or they at least
- 3:33Speaker 1: wanted to talk to Torrey Lovello. They never got that
- 3:35Speaker 1: luxury as the Diamondbacks signed up Lovello for another two years.
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's enough of that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Let's get back to the postseason. Sorry, who were their
- 3:42Speaker 2: last two managers? No, this is kind of an interesting service. Okay.
- 3:48Speaker 2: What do they kind of have in common? Their statues.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's one way to put it. I was going to
- 3:56Speaker 2: say they're not very outgoing. Not that they're bad people.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Let me just say that first. They're very reserved, I
- 4:06Speaker 2: would say. I mean that in a nice way. They're
- 4:09Speaker 2: not outgoing. They're not a Pat Murphy. They're not a
- 4:13Speaker 2: Tori Lavello. They're not a Joe Espada. It's very outgoing.
- 4:17Speaker 2: They're not And Scott Service and Dan Wilson, both ex-catchers,
- 4:21Speaker 2: both know the game very well. Both had very good
- 4:24Speaker 2: ties to Jerry DiPoto. Let's not forget. OK, whether I'm blurry,
- 4:28Speaker 2: whether it's, you know, Service was DiPoto's best friend. Dan
- 4:32Speaker 2: Wilson worked for the Mariners for years and years and years.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They had ties to DiPoto. If you're going to go
- 4:37Speaker 2: something completely opposite of that, you've got to go outside
- 4:40Speaker 2: the organization and you've got to find a fiery something
- 4:42Speaker 2: or other, not a And listen, I get that, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 2: or I don't even need to say fiery. I just
- 4:47Speaker 2: mean somebody that's a little more outgoing, a little bit
- 4:49Speaker 2: more like to the media, like, hey, here's where we're at.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And someone, I mean, you know, Alex Cora, he's not
- 4:58Speaker 2: going to take the job. But I mean, Tor Lovello
- 4:59Speaker 2: is good like that. I mean, you look at the managers.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Murph is great like that. Dave Roberts is great like that. Right.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Kevin Cash is great like that. Even Voter is great
- 5:07Speaker 2: like that as far as like having a presence outside
- 5:10Speaker 2: of just in the locker room. which the locker room matters,
- 5:13Speaker 2: but you're also the head of an– the face. You're
- 5:15Speaker 2: the face of an organization in today's game. You have
- 5:18Speaker 2: to meet with the media multiple times a day. You've
- 5:19Speaker 2: got to give them something. It just can't always be like, yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, we're fine. Yeah, this guy's good.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You've got to give them a little more.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you're a spokesman. There are a lot of media obligations.
- 5:33Speaker 2: That's my opinion. That's my opinion.
- 5:36Speaker 1: All right, we'll have plenty more on that as it surfaces,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and hopefully most of it surfaces after the season because
- 5:43Speaker 1: we're busy right now with the playoffs. Let's hit it. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Charge the Mound is presented by the Fox One app today,
- 5:52Speaker 1: and that's where you can find the Dodgers Brewers series continuing.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I know he's one of the best players ever, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: some people think he gets talked about too much, but
- 6:03Speaker 1: he's one of the best players ever. He pitches and
- 6:07Speaker 1: hits in the past. Right now, he's only hitting. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: he might not even be hitting. AJ, I would like
- 6:12Speaker 1: to start our conversation with Shohei Otani because this is
- 6:15Speaker 1: the travel day and this is all of the talk, right?
- 6:19Speaker 1: What's different about the Dodgers? Well, they have one extra
- 6:21Speaker 1: base hit in their first two games. And if you
- 6:23Speaker 1: don't think we've been waxing poetic about the Brewers, then
- 6:26Speaker 1: watch the postgame show that we did and the 15-minute segment.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But I want to spend a few minutes on Shohei
- 6:31Speaker 1: Otani and the psychology of how to deal with this, right?
- 6:35Speaker 1: He has at least two injuries that I, that appeared
- 6:38Speaker 1: to be lingering and he was on the IL really
- 6:41Speaker 1: late at the end of the season here to try
- 6:42Speaker 1: and come back from.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:44Speaker 1: He doesn't look like himself in basically any semblance of
- 6:48Speaker 1: what he used to be as a hitter. And I'm
- 6:50Speaker 1: sure he'll be back to that. But when you see
- 6:52Speaker 1: him like this and he doesn't have his lower half
- 6:55Speaker 1: and he's out in front and he's waving at pitches
- 6:57Speaker 1: away and he is not hitting the ball nearly as
- 7:00Speaker 1: hard and you, you, mentioned how Joe Davis brought up
- 7:03Speaker 1: he's basically become a slap hitter, right? He's shortening up.
- 7:06Speaker 2: What do you do?
- 7:08Speaker 1: You tried to bond. You tried to bond. What do
- 7:10Speaker 1: you do? What's the plan here?
- 7:13Speaker 2: You hope and pray that he gets healthy overnight. I
- 7:16Speaker 2: don't know what you do. What can you do? You're
- 7:18Speaker 2: not benching. Listen, we all love Katie Wu, okay? And
- 7:21Speaker 2: we love that she's great at her job. But they're
- 7:25Speaker 2: discussing benching him. So, okay, Scott, you love role play.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I'll let you– be Dave Roberts and you come to
- 7:32Speaker 2: me and I'll be Shohei Otani and you, you act
- 7:34Speaker 2: like you're going to bench me and let's go from there. Wow.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm honored. Um, can I, can I bring my bench
- 7:39Speaker 1: coach to, or, and, or actually, you know what I'm
- 7:41Speaker 1: going to bring? Actually, you know what I'm going to do?
- 7:44Speaker 1: I'm Andrew Friedman because this, this was actually in the
- 7:46Speaker 1: story and they said he has to be involved, right?
- 7:48Speaker 1: He's got that key man clause. So Friedman leaves, he leaves.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So I'm Friedman.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I like to play the GM or PBO role and
- 7:55Speaker 1: I'm going to bring my manager, uh, who's a little
- 7:58Speaker 1: taller and, um, more clean, Mr. Clean looking Eric Kratz
- 8:02Speaker 1: with me. So Kratz, you're Dave Roberts. You start off
- 8:04Speaker 1: the combo with Shohei. I'm just kind of next to you.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So go ahead. And just remember, we just said we
- 8:09Speaker 1: don't want him playing in game three because we think
- 8:11Speaker 1: he looks like a mess.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Shohei, how are you feeling? I'm fine. I can play.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I didn't ask you if you could play. I said,
- 8:19Speaker 2: how are you feeling? I feel great.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I feel like I'm ready to help the team. How
- 8:23Speaker 4: does that back knee feel? Because it looks like when
- 8:26Speaker 4: I'm watching in the game, it looks like you're not
- 8:28Speaker 4: able to get on it in BP. or during the game.
- 8:31Speaker 4: So it just seems like it's not, you're not being
- 8:36Speaker 4: totally honest with me.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I'm giving you all I got and that's the best
- 8:40Speaker 2: I can do. And me in the lineup at 70%
- 8:42Speaker 2: is better than anyone you're going to put in at
- 8:44Speaker 2: a hundred percent. Okay.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Me and Andrew, we're going to talk about this and
- 8:47Speaker 4: ultimately we're the ones that are going to make the
- 8:50Speaker 4: decision and just, just be aware that we're thinking about it.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Okay, great. Uh, yeah, I'm playing. Sure.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Hey, Doc, hold on. Shohei, you said you feel great
- 9:03Speaker 1: and 70%. 70% is not great. And do you feel 70%?
- 9:07Speaker 1: Because we have you signed up for another, I don't know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: what is it, six years? We just want to make
- 9:11Speaker 1: sure you're going to be okay even for next year
- 9:13Speaker 1: and not cause further injury here. Your at-bats look nothing
- 9:16Speaker 1: like they usually do. I think that's a fair thing
- 9:19Speaker 1: to say. Do you agree?
- 9:21Speaker 2: That's fair, but I'm just in a rut right now.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And by the way, whatever issues I have, I can
- 9:25Speaker 2: have cleaned up and be ready for spring training. Doctor
- 9:28Speaker 2: said I can't hurt it any worse, so why would
- 9:30Speaker 2: you take me out of the lineup?
- 9:31Speaker 4: Andrew, Andrew, I wouldn't have brought up the whole seven-year contract.
- 9:36Speaker 4: This guy right here, he lives for this moment. That's
- 9:39Speaker 4: why we let him pitch as long as he did.
- 9:41Speaker 4: That's why we let.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Him go for his Cy Young, even though you and I,
- 9:45Speaker 2: we both knew this was going to tear him apart
- 9:49Speaker 2: because he's 32. Can he hear us? Can you hear us?
- 9:53Speaker 1: Because if you can't... No, no, we're talking in each
- 9:55Speaker 1: other's heads, but then if we're doing that, I want
- 9:57Speaker 1: to talk back to you, okay? Jose de Paula, who
- 9:59Speaker 1: has five... minutes in the big leagues is a way
- 10:01Speaker 1: better option than him right now.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Okay. Okay. You really think that? Okay. And then let
- 10:07Speaker 2: that backfire. That's what's going to happen. Let that. Okay.
- 10:13Speaker 2: You come to me and I'm show. Hey, and again,
- 10:15Speaker 2: this is all role play. So nobody take this all serious. Okay.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Cause someone out there is going to say, You know, whatever.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Shohei's not a team player. We don't think Shohei's a
- 10:23Speaker 2: team player. Stop. But here's the thing. If you go
- 10:28Speaker 2: and you, fine, you want to play Josue de Paula, okay, fine.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And he goes out there and he's facing Robert Gasser
- 10:35Speaker 2: and he punches out three times and then you got
- 10:37Speaker 2: a pinch hit for him with a righty at some point,
- 10:39Speaker 2: Kike or Rojas, whoever you do it for, and you
- 10:42Speaker 2: don't play me and we lose two to one. Answer
- 10:46Speaker 2: the questions. Why didn't Shohei play? Because Shohei don't talk.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Because Shohei don't talk. Shohei doesn't talk, right? So he
- 10:56Speaker 2: doesn't answer questions. So you guys have to answer questions
- 10:59Speaker 2: for me. So, Dave, I'm going to start with you.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Answer the question why I didn't play. I'm still Dave.
- 11:05Speaker 2: You know what?
- 11:05Speaker 4: This is a tough decision that we had to make.
- 11:08Speaker 4: We didn't feel like the at-bats that he was having
- 11:11Speaker 4: was giving us the best chance of winning.
- 11:13Speaker 2: That's it.
- 11:15Speaker 4: And honestly, outside of my role play here, I'm going
- 11:18Speaker 4: to sit here and go, you know what? This team,
- 11:21Speaker 4: there's a lot of guys. Max Muncy should have been
- 11:23Speaker 4: starting every single game of the previous series. How did
- 11:27Speaker 4: that work out for us? I'm making moves. I don't
- 11:29Speaker 4: need to answer to people about the moves that I make.
- 11:32Speaker 4: I need to get my team in the best spot possible.
- 11:35Speaker 4: I bet there was seven bullpen guys last year that
- 11:38Speaker 4: were like, what?
- 11:40Speaker 2: Why is Yamamoto going in? He just pitched yesterday. Why
- 11:43Speaker 2: can't I pitch? I'm ready.
- 11:45Speaker 4: And Dave Roberts is like, I'm going to make the
- 11:48Speaker 4: moves that I think are the best moves. And so
- 11:50Speaker 4: if he thinks he's going to take them out, which
- 11:52Speaker 4: I don't agree with, I don't think they're taking them
- 11:54Speaker 4: out in game three. If he looks the same in
- 11:57Speaker 4: game three, I would, I would revisit that.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Hey, at FK and the foul territory network, we have

- 13:02Speaker 2: A little different than the face of baseball. A little
- 13:04Speaker 2: different than the face of baseball. I'm sorry, and it
- 13:07Speaker 2: shouldn't matter, but it matters. I know what y'all are saying,
- 13:12Speaker 2: and I agree that it doesn't look right. I just
- 13:15Speaker 2: don't think that they have How do I say this
- 13:19Speaker 2: politically correct? I don't know. They have the guts. I
- 13:22Speaker 2: don't know. No, they have the option. I don't know
- 13:24Speaker 2: if they have the guts to do it. I don't
- 13:26Speaker 2: know that they do. Should they do it? That's a
- 13:31Speaker 2: really tough call. But there's an old saying. You go
- 13:34Speaker 2: with the date that brought you here or whatever. You
- 13:36Speaker 2: go with the horses that got you here or whatever
- 13:38Speaker 2: that is. Yeah, I don't know what you do.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 13:43Speaker 2: This is one of the more fascinating, impossible situations that
- 13:47Speaker 2: we've seen in a long time.
- 13:49Speaker 4: AJ, let me ask you this question. I'm asking AJ.
- 13:51Speaker 4: I'm not asking Shohei anymore. Do you think, based on
- 13:55Speaker 4: the at-bats that you've seen, he is their best option?
- 14:00Speaker 4: I want to say they have 14 position players, but
- 14:04Speaker 4: I could be wrong.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It might be 13. Is he their best option right
- 14:08Speaker 2: now at DH? It's not like they're like, hey, we
- 14:12Speaker 2: need you to go play right field.
- 14:14Speaker 4: And it's kind of tough. We'll get you out of
- 14:16Speaker 4: there in the seventh. Is he their best option right now?
- 14:21Speaker 2: I don't know. Against Gasser, a lefty who kind of
- 14:25Speaker 2: throws funky from down here a little bit. DePaulo's left-handed too, though,
- 14:29Speaker 2: so I don't know. Again, this is going to be
- 14:35Speaker 2: fascinating to see if this happens. If this happens, it's
- 14:38Speaker 2: breaking news. Not only in– it's all over the world
- 14:40Speaker 2: breaking news to show he's not playing. Wow. Is he
- 14:44Speaker 2: the best option? I'm going to say– Gosh, I don't
- 14:49Speaker 2: want to say this. I'm not going to answer that question.
- 14:52Speaker 1: No, you have to. You're a talking head. You're not
- 14:57Speaker 1: going to answer who the best option is right now?
- 14:59Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Well, let's see. Who's going to play second? Kike's going
- 15:02Speaker 2: to play second against a lefty, right? Is Max going
- 15:05Speaker 2: to play, or are they going to go Rojas, Kike?
- 15:08Speaker 2: Kike at third, Rojas at second. Because Gaster's only going
- 15:11Speaker 2: to go probably three innings, more than likely. So where
- 15:14Speaker 2: do you do that? And then who's left? Their backup catcher,
- 15:17Speaker 2: who there's not, who's Will Smith, is in there. And
- 15:19Speaker 2: then you have Tommy Edmond or Shohei or DePaula. I'm sorry.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'm going to put Shohei in there over DePaula. I
- 15:29Speaker 2: know DePaula is super prospect, but I'm taking the shot
- 15:32Speaker 2: that Shohei figures something out on the off day and
- 15:34Speaker 2: he runs into one. It's just, I don't know. I mean,
- 15:41Speaker 2: I don't know. We talked about it earlier. You want
- 15:44Speaker 2: Tommy Edmond hitting right-handed. We know that. You want Tommy
- 15:47Speaker 2: Edmond hitting right-handed. So he's going to be in the
- 15:49Speaker 2: lineup somewhere. Miggy is not a better hitter than Shohei
- 15:53Speaker 2: at 70%.
- 15:53Speaker 5: No.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Although he hit a big home run last year.
- 15:59Speaker 4: He did hit a big home run. I'm not denying that.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Kike is clearly a better option. So he needs to
- 16:06Speaker 4: be in there right now. If you're waiting for one shot,
- 16:11Speaker 4: do you pull a Gibby type of thing and have
- 16:13Speaker 4: Shohei on the bench?
- 16:14Speaker 2: Or is Shohei.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Shohei doesn't start I'm not using him. Well, Shohei is
- 16:20Speaker 4: going to say all the right things and he's going
- 16:22Speaker 4: to publicly, but behind the scenes, he's, he'll be, I'm not,
- 16:26Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure he'll be pretty upset. I mean, will
- 16:28Speaker 4: he go up there and take in a bat if
- 16:29Speaker 4: he needs to?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Absolutely. He's not going to say no to that. I mean,
- 16:32Speaker 2: has anyone ever said, no man, it's a big playoff game.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I'm not going to take in it. I'm sure there's
- 16:35Speaker 2: been somebody I don't know about taking that about. I mean,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I don't, I don't see that happening, but again, here's
- 16:42Speaker 2: the example. Here's the example. Max or Shohei. That's a
- 16:46Speaker 2: great point, Mark. Max or Shohei is the left-handed at bat.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Max, for sure. It's not even close. Shohei doesn't have.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Then you.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Take Shohei out and you put Kike at DH? Tommy
- 16:55Speaker 2: Edmond at DH?
- 16:58Speaker 4: I give myself a little bit of flexibility at DH.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I definitely have Max. If Max is playing over him,
- 17:03Speaker 4: I have him playing third. All this to say, where
- 17:06Speaker 4: has this ever been in the postseason before? I've talked
- 17:09Speaker 4: about this with Joe Girardi so many times. Joe Girardi
- 17:12Speaker 4: pinch hits. for Alex Rodriguez when he was struggling.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Not hurt, struggling. And I get it.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Alex Rodriguez is not Shohei Otani. I'm not saying that.
- 17:23Speaker 4: I'm saying from a manager playing with a.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Wait, what year was this? What year was this? I
- 17:30Speaker 2: want to say he pinch hit Raul Banez for him.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I probably would have done that too. Raul Banez was
- 17:37Speaker 2: a great I want to say 12, but I don't
- 17:42Speaker 2: think so. I'm getting my years mixed up because Raul
- 17:45Speaker 2: had that big one where he hit the homer and
- 17:47Speaker 2: then he came back again against the Orioles. Before or
- 17:52Speaker 2: after his year suspension for doing things that were not illegal?
- 17:59Speaker 2: I think this was before.
- 18:01Speaker 1: How did we get to A-Rod right now?
- 18:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:03Speaker 4: All I'm saying is managers– Managers needing to be that.
- 18:09Speaker 4: And I think Dave has the cachet to be able
- 18:12Speaker 4: to do this. I think he has that. And if
- 18:16Speaker 4: they feel that.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Look, we're watching how many at-bats a day. They watch
- 18:20Speaker 2: him walk around. They see him get treatment. They see
- 18:24Speaker 2: him hitting in the cage. They see him now hitting
- 18:28Speaker 2: on the field, which we've never seen. Or we rarely see.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So they see more than we see.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And I think Dave has the moxie to do it,
- 18:39Speaker 4: if it's needed to be done.
- 18:44Speaker 3: There we go.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Good talk.
- 18:45Speaker 2: There it is.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I mean, I got to do role play, and I
- 18:49Speaker 1: didn't even cue it up. So I already won 10
- 18:52Speaker 1: minutes into the show.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Abanya is the two homers, by the way, in that game,
- 18:57Speaker 2: tying a homer in the ninth.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Okay.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Walk off in the 12th to win the game.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I remember– I'll never forget that because my daughter just
- 19:05Speaker 4: came home from the hospital that night and she was flipped.
- 19:09Speaker 4: She was sleeping during the day and awake during the night.
- 19:13Speaker 4: So I watched the whole game with her just laying
- 19:16Speaker 4: on my chest, just like– so me and Raul have
- 19:19Speaker 4: that connection from being friends, but also the fact that
- 19:22Speaker 4: he hit some big homers. But you have to– You
- 19:28Speaker 4: lose because Shohei's in the lineup?
- 19:30Speaker 2: No.
- 19:30Speaker 4: You lose because of what Scott said right out of
- 19:33Speaker 4: the jump. One extra base hit? That's why you lose.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Because this team doesn't have extra base hits and you
- 19:40Speaker 4: need it. And that's why you're thinking about taking Shohei
- 19:43Speaker 4: Otani out of the lineup.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, this team had eight homers in four games in
- 19:46Speaker 1: the DS. They have one extra base hit in two games.
- 19:50Speaker 1: against a better pitching staff right now in the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 19:52Speaker 3: This is their thing.
- 19:53Speaker 2: We said this. We said this. They don't hit. They
- 19:57Speaker 2: haven't hit. They haven't hit. They just hit home runs.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Against the Braves, they just hit home runs. But even
- 20:03Speaker 2: last year.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Analytics nerds will tell you the Dodgers have a better
- 20:05Speaker 1: contact rate and less Ks this year than the Brewers.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, well, they're also the– A little different baseball game. Anyway,
- 20:12Speaker 2: by the way, the Dodgers didn't hit last year in
- 20:14Speaker 2: the playoffs. If you remember, actually their pitching carried them
- 20:17Speaker 2: to the World Series. It was their pitching and we
- 20:20Speaker 2: were like, wait, what? This is the stacked lineup and
- 20:23Speaker 2: it didn't hit last year and they still figured out
- 20:25Speaker 2: a win. Remember at the end of the year, everyone's like,
- 20:26Speaker 2: this lineup can't hit. What's wrong with the Dodgers? And
- 20:29Speaker 2: they still won because they're pitching. Well, they weren't counting it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: You guys, Dave Roberts, he wasn't counting on Yamamoto to
- 20:33Speaker 2: not make it out of third inning yesterday. I know
- 20:35Speaker 2: I wasn't in my lock of the day. Anyways.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I don't think anybody expected that. I mean, that was
- 20:41Speaker 1: the rarest of occurrences. Regular season, postseason, obviously he plays
- 20:45Speaker 1: up in the postseason. Last year, LCS in Milwaukee, complete game.
- 20:49Speaker 1: He goes deeper into starts than anyone in baseball this year.
- 20:52Speaker 1: We can go on and on. That's it for now
- 20:55Speaker 1: on this series. We'll do more at some point later.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And let us know if you're watching this, what you
- 21:00Speaker 1: would do with Shohei Otani. You can do your own
- 21:02Speaker 1: role play in the comments. Next up, Brian Anderson will
- 21:06Speaker 1: talk to us about the American League. And a reminder, though,
- 21:09Speaker 1: on the National League side, there's one place to go
- 21:11Speaker 1: for the NLCS and then eventually the World Series, and
- 21:14Speaker 1: that is the Fox One app. At home or on
- 21:17Speaker 1: the go, live or on demand, never miss a moment.

- 21:23Speaker 1: at foxone.com. Hey, Brewers up 2-0. I've seen some merch
- 21:31Speaker 1: purchases lately. What are the ones that I saw the
- 21:35Speaker 1: most recent? Terang, I saw Churio. If you're a Brewers
- 21:38Speaker 1: fan or you're just hopping on the bandwagon, Rob Manfred's
- 21:43Speaker 1: favorite team, FoulTerritoryShop.com. Hey, from last night's postgame show, this
- 21:48Speaker 1: quote from AJ on Otani. He might wake up one
- 21:50Speaker 1: day and say, I ain't pitching anymore. AJ was hinting
- 21:53Speaker 1: that maybe that could be next year. Some replies for
- 21:56Speaker 1: the people. We had one person say, why don't they
- 21:59Speaker 1: just make him the closer? We had another person say
- 22:01Speaker 1: he should pitch from roughly late August onward every year,
- 22:03Speaker 1: moving forward, possibly not even as a full-time starter. Another
- 22:07Speaker 1: person replied saying the organization has failed him and the
- 22:09Speaker 1: team did not save the player from himself. The most
- 22:11Speaker 1: vital one at that. And it's biting them over now.
- 22:15Speaker 1: And let's hope not for the future. AJ, which response
- 22:19Speaker 1: did you like best?
- 22:21Speaker 2: Well, he's not going to be the closer because you
- 22:22Speaker 2: can't do that because we've talked about the many reasons
- 22:24Speaker 2: why that doesn't work. Because if you didn't have to,
- 22:26Speaker 2: if you want to keep his back, there's a whole
- 22:28Speaker 2: there's a whole list of reasons why that's really tough
- 22:30Speaker 2: to do. he's got to warm up somehow, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 2: and there's a whole, there's a whole, what if he's
- 22:35Speaker 2: up to bat and he's on the bases and he
- 22:36Speaker 2: needs to warm up, you can't take him out and
- 22:38Speaker 2: re-up him. So there's a reason why making him the
- 22:40Speaker 2: closer is really hard. I mean, are they going to
- 22:44Speaker 2: make him Blake Stone, Tyler Glass now and Kike Hernandez,
- 22:46Speaker 2: put them on the shelf until August as a pitcher
- 22:48Speaker 2: and then bust him out. So he's ready in September
- 22:50Speaker 2: and October, maybe, I don't know. And then the other
- 22:53Speaker 2: one is, you know, he's really valuable as a DH
- 22:55Speaker 2: when he hits, goes 50, 50 and wins the MVP. So,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and he's healthy. So, Yeah. I mean, all these, some
- 23:03Speaker 2: of these are viable. Some of them are, but the
- 23:04Speaker 2: one about the closer, I just don't think, I mean,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I know we you've said that Scott, but God forbid
- 23:08Speaker 2: he blows a save and then they got to take
- 23:09Speaker 2: him out. Then they, so there's, there's, there's reasons why
- 23:13Speaker 2: that that's not the right response. So I don't know
- 23:16Speaker 2: what the answer is. I just don't know. But I
- 23:18Speaker 2: said this from the time he signed the contract, what
- 23:20Speaker 2: happens if he wakes up one day and doesn't want
- 23:22Speaker 2: to pitch anymore? Is the contract still worth it? And
- 23:24Speaker 2: everybody said, yes. So it's worth it.
- 23:28Speaker 5: This is the call of the Australian rubber bird.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Snap!
- 23:32Speaker 3: Snap!
- 23:33Speaker 1: This is the call of the Alaskan Chili Bird. Kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-kiki-k
- 24:03Speaker 1: Ray's broadcaster, Brian Anderson, back on FT to talk about
- 24:06Speaker 1: what happened with the Rays in game one, how that
- 24:09Speaker 1: can change in game two. And great to have you on.
- 24:11Speaker 1: How often are you hearing the Brian Anderson mix-ups? We
- 24:16Speaker 1: even have some people behind the scenes on our staff,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I won't name names, who are like, wait, I'm getting confused.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yeah, no, plenty. Trust me, plenty. And we've been in contact.
- 24:26Speaker 5: When TBS was going to be doing the DS into
- 24:30Speaker 5: the ALCS, I've been talking with Brian quite a bit,
- 24:34Speaker 5: just giving him some insight on some of the guys
- 24:36Speaker 5: and some of the goings-on of the Rays. But, yes,
- 24:39Speaker 5: there have been plenty of people from back home reaching out.
- 24:42Speaker 5: I didn't know you were doing this game. I'm like, well,
- 24:44Speaker 5: I'm not play-by-play, and that's not really my voice. So
- 24:47Speaker 5: I'm watching it sitting at home just like everybody else.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Okay, well, yeah. Go ahead, AJ.
- 24:53Speaker 2: No, go ahead, Scotty. Well, no, I was going to say,
- 24:55Speaker 2: if you're sitting at home, you weren't at the game
- 24:57Speaker 2: last night? You weren't at the trough? You weren't rooting hard?
- 24:59Speaker 5: You weren't one of those fans sitting there going, how
- 25:02Speaker 5: did this happen? And trust me, that's what I would
- 25:06Speaker 5: have been doing. No, before, well, last week, we had
- 25:10Speaker 5: horrible weather here in Florida. We had like a three
- 25:12Speaker 5: or four day span where you really didn't even see
- 25:14Speaker 5: the sun. It was just raining heavily.
- 25:16Speaker 3: All day long.
- 25:17Speaker 5: And so all of my kids' practices, games, everything got canceled.
- 25:21Speaker 5: So this week, it has been all hands on deck.
- 25:24Speaker 5: It's been my week with the kids. They have had,
- 25:27Speaker 5: I mean, double headers. It's been nonstop since schools let out.
- 25:31Speaker 5: So I have not been able to get down there.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Won't be able to get down there tonight either. If
- 25:35Speaker 5: it gets back here with a six or seven, yes,
- 25:38Speaker 5: I will be there with bells on wondering what is
- 25:41Speaker 5: going on. But You know, let's see if it gets
- 25:45Speaker 5: back here. I'll tell you what, last night, that's a
- 25:47Speaker 5: tough loss. That is a really tough loss. That reminds
- 25:50Speaker 5: me a lot. And I was, you know, other people
- 25:54Speaker 5: that I've been talking with, I said it reminds me
- 25:55Speaker 5: a lot of in 1999 when I was with the.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Diamondbacks, we won the division.
- 26:00Speaker 5: And we were going to be hosting the DS, and
- 26:02Speaker 5: it was either going to be the Mets or the Reds.
- 26:04Speaker 3: And they had to have a play-in game.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Game 163, and the Mets had to use their ace,
- 26:09Speaker 5: Al Leiter, in that game.
- 26:11Speaker 3: He threw great. I think they beat the Reds 4-0,
- 26:13Speaker 3: and now they.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Come into Bank One ballpark. We've got Randy Johnson set
- 26:20Speaker 5: up game one. We've got the home field advantage. They
- 26:22Speaker 5: have to go with Masato Yoshi. You're only going to
- 26:24Speaker 5: see Al Leiter potentially in a game four, and they
- 26:28Speaker 5: came in. We were the prohibitive favorites in that series,
- 26:33Speaker 5: and they stole game one. And I'm going to tell
- 26:35Speaker 5: you what, it put our team back on its heels,
- 26:39Speaker 5: and it really kind of flipped the series. Now, obviously,
- 26:42Speaker 5: it was a five-game series. It was shorter, so there
- 26:44Speaker 5: wasn't as much time to recover. But them stealing game
- 26:47Speaker 5: one in that series, I was telling anybody that'll listen,
- 26:49Speaker 5: if Cleveland can somehow come in with Foster Griffin on
- 26:52Speaker 5: the mound and Drew Rasmussen, game one at home, The buildup,
- 26:58Speaker 5: the Rays are rested. They have their pitching staff ready
- 27:00Speaker 5: to go just like they want it. Cleveland had to
- 27:02Speaker 5: use Messick and Williams just to get to this game.
- 27:06Speaker 3: 48 hours later.
- 27:08Speaker 5: If Cleveland somehow is able to steal game one, that
- 27:12Speaker 5: is a tough loss for the Rays, and that could
- 27:14Speaker 5: flip this series on its head because you win that
- 27:17Speaker 5: game one, and now tonight you've got Parker Messick going
- 27:21Speaker 5: against the Rays.
- 27:23Speaker 3: He has had his way.
- 27:26Speaker 5: With the Rays I think it's been four starts against
- 27:28Speaker 5: them he's gone 26 in the third innings given up
- 27:31Speaker 5: three earned runs two walks they haven't really even threatened
- 27:35Speaker 5: him he has thrown the ball great against the Rays
- 27:38Speaker 5: they've not had an answer for him at all so now.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Cleveland wins game one and you've got a Ray killer
- 27:43Speaker 5: going here in game two.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Oh, by the way, game three, Gavin Williams, the, the.
- 27:48Speaker 5: You know, the guardians version of drew Rasmus and you
- 27:51Speaker 5: have him waiting up in Cleveland.
- 27:53Speaker 3: So last night was a, was a tough loss. We'll
- 27:55Speaker 3: see how they bounce back today.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Ryan. I said this last night on the post game.
- 28:00Speaker 2: This reminds me, you remember 99, 2005. Okay. Seven game series. We're,
- 28:04Speaker 2: we're playing. We sweep the, we sweep the Red Sox
- 28:08Speaker 2: and the, Angels had to play the Yankees, and they
- 28:11Speaker 2: had a rainout, so they had to fly to New York.
- 28:12Speaker 2: They went game five. They had to fly back to Anaheim,
- 28:14Speaker 2: play game five, and then fly right to Chicago. Excuse me.
- 28:19Speaker 2: We had our pitching lined up. They had Paul Bird.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Everyone's like, oh, these guys are going to kill Paul Bird.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I think we lost two to one, right? And everyone's like, oh, no,
- 28:26Speaker 2: the series is over. We lost two to one at home. Everyone,
- 28:29Speaker 2: the series is over, right? And then we went out
- 28:31Speaker 2: and beat their ass the next four games, and we
- 28:32Speaker 2: lost again. Okay? Yeah. You know, I think their second
- 28:36Speaker 2: game they had, I forget who they had going, but
- 28:38Speaker 2: it was the same. I think it was Jared Washburn, right?
- 28:40Speaker 2: He's a White Sox killer his whole career. You know,
- 28:42Speaker 2: we had Burley after Contreras who hadn't lost in forever.
- 28:45Speaker 2: We lost. And then, you know, so anyways, it can
- 28:48Speaker 2: work both ways, right? But the thing for me that's... No, no, no, go, go, go. No,
- 28:54Speaker 2: but the thing for me that stood out was that
- 28:58Speaker 2: they scored the two runs in the first inning, and
- 29:00Speaker 2: then they just went silent. There was no pressure, and
- 29:03Speaker 2: the Rays always seem to put pressure, and that went away.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Is that more on the Rays, or is that more
- 29:08Speaker 2: on how well the Guardians pitched after the first inning?
- 29:12Speaker 3: I think it's a little bit of both.
- 29:14Speaker 5: I think Foster Griffin, he had not had many innings
- 29:16Speaker 5: in the last few weeks. And so it was a little,
- 29:20Speaker 5: and I agree with you, the way that those runs
- 29:22Speaker 5: were scored, Yandy Diaz jumps all over that ball, hits
- 29:25Speaker 5: it so hard, it scoots right by Kwon. Then the
- 29:29Speaker 5: Rays go to the small ball like we had talked previously.
- 29:31Speaker 5: They don't wait until late in the game. you know,
- 29:34Speaker 5: and maybe you want, you know, a Rhonda to swing
- 29:36Speaker 5: the bat there, go for the beginning, but he lays
- 29:39Speaker 5: down the bunt. Caminero squeezes one through and you get
- 29:42Speaker 5: that first run on the board. Then.
- 29:44Speaker 3: I thought that even after that, the two out hitting,
- 29:47Speaker 3: the two strike hitting, Victor Mason Jr.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Going the other way, DeLucas staying on a ball that's
- 29:52Speaker 5: off the plate away.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And using the middle of the field.
- 29:55Speaker 5: I thought their approach, it didn't look like a team
- 29:57Speaker 5: that hadn't played a whole lot of baseball here recently.
- 30:00Speaker 3: And you thought, okay, two to nothing. Yes, now you
- 30:04Speaker 3: start to.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Apply more of that pressure and you start to build
- 30:08Speaker 5: that lead. And you're right, it dried up in a hurry.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And I think that the opportunities started, you know, Griffin
- 30:14Speaker 5: got on that run where he retired like seven in
- 30:16Speaker 5: a row and kind of got his footing and put
- 30:19Speaker 5: that Rays lineup back on its, you know, back on
- 30:22Speaker 5: its heels just a little bit. And then, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 5: they came in and threw the ball, threw the ball
- 30:27Speaker 5: great after that. And the Rays could really get nothing going.
- 30:31Speaker 5: And so, yeah, that was certainly frustrating. And then you
- 30:33Speaker 5: hit the home run to cut the lead 2-1, and
- 30:36Speaker 5: you're like, boy, this thing just got really close. It
- 30:38Speaker 5: just got really close, closer than 2-0. You just felt
- 30:41Speaker 5: like something was going to flip there.
- 30:44Speaker 3: And then, you know, the decision to send Drew back
- 30:46Speaker 3: out for the seventh.
- 30:47Speaker 5: And I think, you know, Kevin looked at his pitch count.
- 30:50Speaker 5: He did have a lot of high-leverage pitches thrown and innings.
- 30:53Speaker 5: He had some traffic out there, but he trusts his guy.
- 30:56Speaker 3: And all of a sudden, the game is tied, and.
- 31:00Speaker 3: You know, then you, then you go from there.
- 31:01Speaker 5: I thought a couple of things that were interesting to
- 31:04Speaker 5: me is once you got through the seventh inning and
- 31:06Speaker 5: now this game is, it's even up, you, you have
- 31:09Speaker 5: the home field advantage and you get to the top
- 31:11Speaker 5: of the eighth inning. And I understand matchups and I
- 31:13Speaker 5: understand what, what they're trying to do, but Tyler Wells
- 31:16Speaker 5: is out there starting the top of the eighth inning
- 31:18Speaker 5: and he hadn't thrown a competitive pitch in a month.
- 31:21Speaker 3: And, and I know that you have to get them
- 31:23Speaker 3: out there.
- 31:24Speaker 5: I he's done the job, especially since coming over to
- 31:26Speaker 5: the race, he was absolutely fantastic. But, you know, you
- 31:29Speaker 5: also had the option of Kevin Kelly, who has been
- 31:32Speaker 5: locked and loaded, you know, all season long. And you
- 31:34Speaker 5: go with Wells, and that doesn't quite work out. And then,
- 31:38Speaker 5: you know, when you end up cutting the lead back
- 31:41Speaker 5: to one going into the ninth, you know, you go
- 31:43Speaker 5: with Cole Solcer, and then it starts to, it starts
- 31:46Speaker 5: to get away from you a little bit. So I'm
- 31:48Speaker 5: sure it was a frustrating night, you know, for the
- 31:51Speaker 5: Rays and that dugout and those players and staff. But
- 31:55Speaker 5: to your point, it can flip tonight. You come out
- 31:58Speaker 5: there and that's what I cannot.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Wait to see. You know, what is Freddy Peralta going
- 32:02Speaker 3: to look like?
- 32:03Speaker 5: Is he going to be the guy that's in command
- 32:04Speaker 5: and control like he was as he was the American
- 32:07Speaker 5: League Pitcher of the Month in September? And will this
- 32:10Speaker 5: team look like it's calmed down just a little bit
- 32:12Speaker 5: and get back to playing that baseball where they apply
- 32:15Speaker 5: that pressure and hope to get the opposition to crack.
- 32:18Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Never thought we'd hear somebody say Kevin Cash stuck with
- 32:22Speaker 4: his guy and left him in there too long. That
- 32:26Speaker 4: shades of 2020, six years, a lot of people make adjustments.
- 32:29Speaker 4: My question to you is this team led the American
- 32:32Speaker 4: League East almost the entire year. This team never trailed
- 32:37Speaker 4: in the last series, the division series? Do they have
- 32:39Speaker 4: the get back? Do they have the comeback in them?
- 32:42Speaker 4: Or is this the one area of new territory that
- 32:46Speaker 4: they have to navigate?
- 32:48Speaker 5: You know, that's interesting. I think this is a resilient team.
- 32:52Speaker 5: It's a close group. They play selfless baseball. And I
- 32:56Speaker 5: think that they have that pluck to absolutely bounce right back.
- 33:00Speaker 3: The only caveat to.
- 33:01Speaker 5: All of that is it's October baseball. And that's different
- 33:06Speaker 5: for different guys. I can remember when I was getting drafted,
- 33:09Speaker 5: you know, junior in college and Tony LaCava with the angels,
- 33:13Speaker 5: we were talking after a game one time and he said,
- 33:15Speaker 5: you know, not everybody can play in October. And I
- 33:20Speaker 5: didn't really understand it. I didn't really push back. And
- 33:22Speaker 5: I remember thinking, well, what.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Do you mean?
- 33:24Speaker 5: I mean, January, June, October, baseball's baseball. And I didn't
- 33:28Speaker 5: really give it much thought. I just thought it was
- 33:30Speaker 5: a strange thing to say. Four years later, I get
- 33:34Speaker 5: called into Mike Hargrove's office. We're getting ready to start
- 33:36Speaker 5: the ALCS in 1997. And he says, hey, listen, we're
- 33:41Speaker 5: going to activate you. You're going to be obviously coming
- 33:43Speaker 5: out of the pen. I don't have any idea how
- 33:45Speaker 5: I'm going to use you. You just be ready from
- 33:47Speaker 5: the first pitch.
- 33:48Speaker 3: And I was like, great. And so I go out
- 33:51Speaker 3: to batting practice.
- 33:52Speaker 5: And we may have talked about this before, but, you know,
- 33:54Speaker 5: BP during the regular season is like a necessary even.
- 33:57Speaker 3: BP during the post season, it's an event.
- 34:00Speaker 5: You know, you've got media everywhere. There's a buzz in
- 34:03Speaker 5: the stadium.
- 34:04Speaker 3: It's a thing.
- 34:05Speaker 5: And I remember being out in left center field because
- 34:07Speaker 5: I like the power shag and get my running in
- 34:08Speaker 5: that way. And I'm getting ready to go. And those
- 34:11Speaker 5: words of Tony LaCava came flooding back. And I was literally,
- 34:16Speaker 5: it was just a binging moment where I was.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Like, I get it. I get what he meant. October,
- 34:24Speaker 3: the stage is bigger.
- 34:25Speaker 5: The lights are brighter. Some guys can handle it. Some
- 34:29Speaker 5: guys can't. And I understood what he meant by that.
- 34:32Speaker 5: It's the same sport in October. It's a different game.
- 34:36Speaker 5: And that's when you'll see what guys are made of.
- 34:39Speaker 5: And I think this team, they've shown that pluck all
- 34:42Speaker 5: year in the toughest division in baseball or one of
- 34:45Speaker 5: the toughest divisions ever.
- 34:47Speaker 3: In baseball.
- 34:48Speaker 5: And so I think that they absolutely have it in them.
- 34:51Speaker 3: You've seen it.
- 34:52Speaker 5: During the course of the regular season, but October can
- 34:55Speaker 5: be a little bit of a different animal. That's why
- 34:57Speaker 5: I'll be so anxious to see what the first few
- 34:59Speaker 5: innings look like tonight.
- 35:01Speaker 4: Tony LaCava, what a special man. I love that that's
- 35:04Speaker 4: the first time that his name has been brought up
- 35:06Speaker 4: on this show.
- 35:07Speaker 2: But anyway, incredible, incredible man. What is the ideal path?
- 35:12Speaker 2: It's Freddie P to who? to Brian Baker based on
- 35:17Speaker 2: how this team's been pitching the best.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Wow.
- 35:21Speaker 5: If you could get, I mean, I love that combination,
- 35:25Speaker 5: Freddie Peralta, you know, Cam Boozer, he can be absolutely
- 35:28Speaker 5: overpowering and, and you know, and then, you know, Kevin
- 35:31Speaker 5: Kelly gets a lot of big outs. I, you'd love
- 35:35Speaker 5: to see him, you know, be able to be a
- 35:36Speaker 5: part of it. And then, you know, and then Baker, Baker,
- 35:39Speaker 5: this guy, his last blown save was May 13th. He's
- 35:44Speaker 5: been absolutely lights out, but you know how it's going
- 35:47Speaker 5: to go. It's going to be all matchup based. They're
- 35:49Speaker 5: not going to veer from too much of what they've
- 35:51Speaker 5: done all season long. And that's what the key is.
- 35:54Speaker 5: I think the key is the start by Freddie. What
- 35:56Speaker 5: is he able to give you? And he certainly, after
- 36:00Speaker 5: his first four or five starts with the Rays, where
- 36:02Speaker 5: he was trying to gather his footing, he was able
- 36:05Speaker 5: to do that.
- 36:05Speaker 3: And then he was lights out in September. And he
- 36:07Speaker 3: was good in.
- 36:09Speaker 5: The division series against the Yankees. And you'd like to
- 36:12Speaker 5: see him get into a good rhythm. That's why, again,
- 36:15Speaker 5: those first couple innings, Freddie tells you an awful lot
- 36:18Speaker 5: about his outings early in the game. If he's out
- 36:20Speaker 5: there and his misses aren't egregious and he's around the
- 36:24Speaker 5: zone and he's getting that change up involved in a
- 36:27Speaker 5: lot of strikes and controlling the count, then you feel
- 36:30Speaker 5: pretty good about him being able to give you a
- 36:32Speaker 5: really good outing and get deeper into the game. And
- 36:34Speaker 5: I think that's what Kevin Cash really, really would like.
- 36:39Speaker 5: I thought it was interesting when he did stick with
- 36:42Speaker 5: Drew going into that seventh inning. I know the pitch
- 36:44Speaker 5: count wasn't out of hand, but again, the high leverage pitches,
- 36:47Speaker 5: the high leverage situations, you have to ask yourself the question,
- 36:53Speaker 5: did he stick with them because he didn't want to
- 36:57Speaker 5: go to the pen quite yet? He wanted to shorten
- 37:00Speaker 5: the number of outs that they were going to have
- 37:01Speaker 5: to get, or did he just go with his horse?
- 37:03Speaker 5: Only Kevin Cash knows that. But that's what I thought,
- 37:09Speaker 5: you know, was interesting. So first few innings, see how
- 37:12Speaker 5: dialed in Freddie is, how comfortable he looks. And if
- 37:16Speaker 5: he looks comfortable, then you've got a chance to limit
- 37:18Speaker 5: the outs of the bullpen before you get to Baker,
- 37:21Speaker 5: who's been absolutely lights out.
- 37:25Speaker 2: B.A., one of the great things about the Rays and
- 37:28Speaker 2: the Brewers, okay, we're going to use that. Actually, all
- 37:30Speaker 2: four of these teams that are left, I'm going to
- 37:32Speaker 2: say it, they play the game the right way, okay?
- 37:34Speaker 2: The right way is they– They do the small things, right?
- 37:37Speaker 2: They're not just waiting on a home run. Maybe the
- 37:38Speaker 2: Dodgers a little bit more than the other three teams.
- 37:42Speaker 2: And the Rays can hit home runs. I know that
- 37:44Speaker 2: with Caminero and Aranda and Yandy and those guys and
- 37:47Speaker 2: even Liam Hicks to an extent. How fun is it
- 37:50Speaker 2: to watch his team every day? I mean, seriously, it
- 37:53Speaker 2: must take you back. You mentioned 1999, even before that probably, right, 97.
- 37:57Speaker 2: It was a different game, and you kind of see
- 38:00Speaker 2: it kind of turning back to that a little bit
- 38:03Speaker 2: because three of the four teams– and listen, the Dodgers
- 38:05Speaker 2: play the game the right way. They just do it
- 38:07Speaker 2: with higher payroll, okay? But they play hard. They do
- 38:09Speaker 2: a lot of the right things. But the Brewers, the Guardians–
- 38:13Speaker 2: And the Rays, they play the game different, okay? Pressure, pressure, pressure, pitching, defense, pressure,
- 38:19Speaker 2: steal a base, bunt a guy over. How fun is
- 38:22Speaker 2: that every day for you to sit there and go, man,
- 38:23Speaker 2: I get to watch cool baseball every day?
- 38:26Speaker 3: It's a blast.
- 38:27Speaker 5: It absolutely is a blast because you just don't know
- 38:30Speaker 5: how they're going to win that night. They can beat
- 38:33Speaker 5: you every way imaginable. Every way that this game allows
- 38:36Speaker 5: you to beat a team, they can do it. You
- 38:39Speaker 5: think about from the month of July on, and the
- 38:42Speaker 5: Rays at the end of the day didn't end up
- 38:43Speaker 5: being a big home run hitting team.
- 38:45Speaker 3: But as you mentioned, there's a lot of guys that
- 38:46Speaker 3: are capable.
- 38:47Speaker 5: And from July on, they were right there in the
- 38:49Speaker 5: top two or three in the American League in homers.
- 38:52Speaker 5: But then you juxtapose that against You know, they led
- 38:55Speaker 5: the league in bunt hits, sacrifice bunts, safety squeeze. They're
- 38:59Speaker 5: a very aggressive base running team. they have the most, well,
- 39:04Speaker 5: in my opinion, but from what I've seen, they have
- 39:06Speaker 5: the most aggressive third base coach that you will find
- 39:08Speaker 5: in Brady Williams. I mean, if he's not sending you,
- 39:10Speaker 5: your score probability is zero because if there's any probability
- 39:14Speaker 5: you're going, and that's just the way they go. And
- 39:16Speaker 5: you know, you'll run into some outs here or there,
- 39:18Speaker 5: but you're going to score a lot of runs that
- 39:20Speaker 5: you probably shouldn't have either. So they put so much pressure.
- 39:24Speaker 5: You saw it in the division series with the Yankees,
- 39:27Speaker 5: you know, the infield pulled in.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Chopper, here comes Lombard.
- 39:30Speaker 5: You know, he's trying to make a play and a
- 39:32Speaker 5: throw to the plate before he actually gets the baseball.
- 39:34Speaker 5: That's what the Rays do with their speed, their aggressiveness.
- 39:38Speaker 5: They put pressure on a defense. And like any other sport,
- 39:41Speaker 5: you apply enough pressure, mistakes will get made. And so
- 39:45Speaker 5: it is absolutely a blast. And not to mention the
- 39:48Speaker 5: other side. where they pitched so well, strong bullpen, lockdown closer,
- 39:54Speaker 5: very good defensively.
- 39:55Speaker 3: They just don't beat themselves.
- 39:57Speaker 5: And they have a lot of tools in the toolbox
- 40:01Speaker 5: to be able to beat you. So it was absolutely
- 40:05Speaker 5: a blast all year long, just wondering, how are they
- 40:07Speaker 5: going to do it tonight?
- 40:08Speaker 3: Will it be a couple of home runs? Are they
- 40:09Speaker 3: going to bunt?
- 40:10Speaker 5: Will there be the first and third, one out, no out,
- 40:13Speaker 5: safety squeeze, and get the run in that way? They really,
- 40:16Speaker 5: really frustrate opposing defense's And, you know, that's the other
- 40:19Speaker 5: thing that we've seen during the course of the year
- 40:22Speaker 5: is teams have a hard time defending them. They play
- 40:25Speaker 5: a style of baseball that you're not used to playing against.
- 40:29Speaker 5: And so now all of a sudden you see guys
- 40:31Speaker 5: going to the wrong base with the throw. You see
- 40:34Speaker 5: guys not really knowing where to go. There was a
- 40:37Speaker 5: game I was at home. It was one series I
- 40:39Speaker 5: didn't do. It was a home series against the Padres.
- 40:42Speaker 5: And it was a close game and it was getting late.
- 40:45Speaker 5: And Liam Hicks ended up at first base. They had
- 40:47Speaker 5: a runner at first and third Chandler Simpson was at
- 40:49Speaker 5: the plate. They pinch ran Kenny Piper, the third catcher
- 40:54Speaker 5: for Liam Hicks at first. And so you're watching it.
- 40:57Speaker 5: There's one out first and third, first pitch Chandler. You're
- 41:01Speaker 5: thinking maybe that bump play and Chandler takes the pitch
- 41:04Speaker 5: for ball one, second pitch. He doesn't square around again,
- 41:07Speaker 5: takes it for ball two. All of a sudden there's
- 41:09Speaker 5: a play at second. And I'm sitting at home thinking,
- 41:12Speaker 5: why is Kenny Piper stealing here? Like, this is not
- 41:16Speaker 5: where you would send in. I know he runs well
- 41:18Speaker 5: for a catcher, but why would he be stealing right there?
- 41:21Speaker 3: Well, then you go to the high home camera.
- 41:24Speaker 5: The first and third basemen are playing way in the turf.
- 41:29Speaker 5: Nobody's holding Piper on. And so Kevin Cash is like, go,
- 41:33Speaker 5: go run.
- 41:35Speaker 3: So you see these teams, they just don't know.
- 41:37Speaker 5: They were so sure that Chandler was going to bunt
- 41:40Speaker 5: that they just completely skewed their defense that all of
- 41:43Speaker 5: a sudden now you've got second and third and one out.
- 41:45Speaker 3: And the Rays obviously end up winning that ball game.
- 41:49Speaker 5: But you see examples like that all the time where
- 41:52Speaker 5: defenses just aren't quite sure where to go with the ball,
- 41:56Speaker 5: how to play them, what base to cover, and the
- 41:59Speaker 5: Rays take full advantage of that.
- 42:01Speaker 1: B.A., last one, and we've got next guest waiting, so
- 42:04Speaker 1: I want it quick if we can. But what happened
- 42:06Speaker 1: to Shane McClanahan? I know he's out, obviously, for the
- 42:09Speaker 1: rest of the postseason, and he's frustrated. The quotes to
- 42:13Speaker 1: me were like, oh, we're just going to focus on
- 42:15Speaker 1: next year at this point. Was it injury? Did they
- 42:18Speaker 1: just feel like he wasn't going to be able to
- 42:20Speaker 1: get back going again? It felt like a little cryptic
- 42:22Speaker 1: on the quotes, but you follow the teamwork closely.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, your guess is as good as mine.
- 42:27Speaker 5: I know that he had the back issue and had
- 42:30Speaker 5: to come out of a game and, you know, went
- 42:32Speaker 5: on the I.L. and was able to, you know, to
- 42:35Speaker 5: come back, get back into, you know, the regular season,
- 42:38Speaker 5: get back into some games and looked good. And then
- 42:41Speaker 5: all of a sudden you get word that he's going
- 42:43Speaker 5: on the I.L. with forearm tightness and. I mean, that's
- 42:46Speaker 5: the extent of what we know. And typically, you know
- 42:51Speaker 5: how these things go, that you have these fake ILs
- 42:54Speaker 5: and you go on. And typically when you do that,
- 42:57Speaker 5: if you were going to do that, it's going to
- 42:59Speaker 5: be a calf. a quad, something that's not going to
- 43:04Speaker 5: affect you, especially when you're talking about a pitcher, that's
- 43:07Speaker 5: not going.
- 43:07Speaker 3: To affect his arm.
- 43:09Speaker 5: So when the diagnosis was forearm tightness, then you're like, okay,
- 43:14Speaker 5: well then he must have forearm tightness. I don't think
- 43:16Speaker 5: that'd be something that you'd be messing around with.
- 43:20Speaker 3: And if that's the case, with him having not pitched.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Since 23, then you kind of understand the route that
- 43:26Speaker 5: it took Um, but, but listen, I, that is a,
- 43:30Speaker 5: that's a, that's a tough one. Cause you'd love to
- 43:32Speaker 5: have them on that staff with what he brings, but
- 43:35Speaker 5: unfortunately the, the, the forearm is going to, is going
- 43:38Speaker 5: to keep them out and we'll, we'll see where that
- 43:39Speaker 5: takes them in the future. But, um, you know, obviously
- 43:42Speaker 5: not going to be able to help the team this year.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:44Speaker 1: It's a bummer. I mean, it was a Cy Young guy,
- 43:47Speaker 1: a candidate looked like he was going to be a
- 43:49Speaker 1: big part of it for a while. BA thanks for
- 43:51Speaker 1: the time, dude. Great catching up. We love the insight
- 43:53Speaker 1: and good luck to your race tonight. Okay.
- 43:55Speaker 3: All right, boys. Have a great day. Take care.
- 43:57Speaker 2: You do this every day at your house, PA.
- 43:59Speaker 3: This is the fall tree.
- 44:00Speaker 5: It's a lazy man's way of not taking down the tree.
- 44:04Speaker 5: We had a spring Easter tree. We had a 4th
- 44:07Speaker 5: of July summer tree. Now we've got the fall tree
- 44:10Speaker 5: rolling right into Christmas. That's just a lazy.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Man's way of doing things. There you go.
- 44:14Speaker 1: People in the comments were like, what is that? And
- 44:16Speaker 1: I said, I think it's a Halloween tree because it
- 44:17Speaker 1: had those vibes. Fall tree, close enough. We're good. I
- 44:20Speaker 1: nailed it. I feel good about my day.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Done. I like it. I like it.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Enjoy it, man. We'll talk soon, okay?
- 44:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 44:26Speaker 3: See you, boys.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Hey, Bob Nightingale wrote a good story about the owner
- 44:30Speaker 1: of the Brewers, Marc Atanasio, who's been at it for
- 44:33Speaker 1: a minute, and the team being two victories away from
- 44:36Speaker 1: their first pennant since 1982, six victories from their first title.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And then this is the interesting part. I mean, people
- 44:42Speaker 1: can read the article, but perhaps a little more than
- 44:44Speaker 1: two years from becoming the next commissioner of baseball. Could
- 44:47Speaker 1: be a Bud Selig remix here. You get someone from
- 44:52Speaker 1: the Milwaukee part of baseball to take over for commissioner Manfred.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Nobody really knows who the successor is like there, there
- 44:58Speaker 1: aren't really any candidates that are standing out yet. People
- 45:02Speaker 1: say Theo Epstein, I don't think he wants it. And
- 45:06Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, there's some internal guys that
- 45:08Speaker 1: I don't think will win. So maybe Altonacio has a shot.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Why would he take that job?
- 45:14Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Just to say, didn't he have other interests besides baseball?
- 45:19Speaker 2: I'm sure he does. I love to, I love talking
- 45:21Speaker 2: to that guy, by the way. He's always available. Man,
- 45:23Speaker 2: you go to a Brewers game, he's at almost every game. Oh, man.
- 45:28Speaker 2: He's talking to Matt Arnold. He's talking to Murph. He's
- 45:30Speaker 2: talking to the media. Man, this guy's awesome, man. I
- 45:33Speaker 2: like Mark Antanasio a lot. Yes, he's a guy. And,
- 45:37Speaker 2: I mean, I guess, I mean, he's rich. But, like,
- 45:40Speaker 2: what does a commissioner get paid?
- 45:41Speaker 4: Like $ 30 million a year?
- 45:44Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 45:48Speaker 2: I guess there's that.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you're a billionaire or own a billion-dollar
- 45:54Speaker 1: asset plus.
- 45:56Speaker 2: He can just sell it. I mean, he's going to
- 45:58Speaker 2: have to sell it. You can't own a team and
- 46:00Speaker 2: be the commissioners.
- 46:02Speaker 1: So you cash out.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Bud Sealy did it.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Right, I know, but I'm saying like.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Not anymore, you can't.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Marc-Antonio, like you guys said, loves the game. He's around.
- 46:11Speaker 1: He wants to be around the game. That's why he's
- 46:12Speaker 1: doing it. I mean, the money is really good, but
- 46:15Speaker 1: for him, it's not going to make or break his life.
- 46:18Speaker 1: He's doing pretty well.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Whoever becomes a commissioner, I hope their goal is to
- 46:24Speaker 2: make baseball better, not suffice the owners. Can that happen?
- 46:30Speaker 1: No.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Because he's the boss of the owners. Or he's the
- 46:32Speaker 2: mouthpiece of the owners. He's the spokesperson. He's not the boss.
- 46:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 46:36Speaker 1: But does someone that doesn't need the money and has
- 46:38Speaker 1: been an owner play better? That's a decent argument that
- 46:42Speaker 1: we can have at some point in the offseason where
- 46:43Speaker 1: it's like, I don't care about the money. You can
- 46:45Speaker 1: fire me tomorrow.
- 46:47Speaker 2: We're going to have lots of time to talk about
- 46:48Speaker 2: this in the offseason starting December 1st. We're going to
- 46:51Speaker 2: have months and months of talking about this bull crap.
- 46:53Speaker 3: All right.
- 46:54Speaker 1: While our TV audience hangs out for commercial break, we're
- 46:57Speaker 1: here to look at the matchups over the next few days.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Thanks to SeatGeek. Actually, I'll start here. It is not
- 47:04Speaker 1: cheap to go to a Dodger game. That's no secret.
- 47:07Speaker 1: During the regular season, especially in the postseason, there is
- 47:10Speaker 1: a good opportunity. If you want to watch the Dodgers
- 47:13Speaker 1: over the next few days, it might only be two days.
- 47:15Speaker 1: to get a ticket for a price that's a little
- 47:17Speaker 1: bit lower than usual. I was looking on SeatGeek. There
- 47:21Speaker 1: are some jaded Dodgers fans that are like, ah, we're
- 47:23Speaker 1: down 2-0. Screw it. These are good games. I'd be
- 47:27Speaker 1: all about that. If you love ball, go take advantage
- 47:30Speaker 1: of the prices being down a little bit on SeatGeek
- 47:32Speaker 1: and then take even more advantage with Territory 10 for 10%
- 47:35Speaker 1: off tickets. It's true, AJ. I mean, you know, we've
- 47:37Speaker 1: followed teams sometimes that get so spoiled. Astros fans at times,
- 47:41Speaker 1: Braves fans at times. with success that if they feel
- 47:45Speaker 1: like they're down or they don't have a chance, they're
- 47:47Speaker 1: not showing up so quickly. Same with the Yankees too.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Yankee fans sometimes feel this way.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Yeah. And by the way, the Dodgers are expensive per
- 47:56Speaker 2: inning because most of them show up in the third
- 47:58Speaker 2: and leave in the eighth. Isn't that what someone said?
- 48:00Speaker 2: Who said that? PCA said that. Didn't he say that?
- 48:04Speaker 2: That's the rumor. I mean, I've been to, I played
- 48:06Speaker 2: in the playoffs in Dodger stadium and they, they pack it.
- 48:08Speaker 2: So I don't know if that's true, but. Yeah, if
- 48:10Speaker 2: you go off what certain people say, I mean, you're
- 48:12Speaker 2: only there for like five innings. So it's really almost
- 48:14Speaker 2: double the price of what they pay. I don't know.
- 48:18Speaker 4: I'm going to Cleveland. Sorry, I'm taking the next day
- 48:21Speaker 4: off and I'm going to Cleveland. I'm looking at tickets
- 48:22Speaker 4: for the Cleveland game. I want to see a big rig.
- 48:26Speaker 4: I mean, talk about adrenaline dump. The dude went close
- 48:29Speaker 4: out the game, 18 pitches, then 94 pitches, I think,
- 48:33Speaker 4: and punched out everybody.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Like, A.J.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Got an extra punch out on his– Every White Sox
- 48:39Speaker 4: that ever played, Canerco, Tomey, Jermaine Dye, everybody got struck
- 48:44Speaker 4: out in that game. Gavin Williams has to come back.
- 48:47Speaker 4: He's going home again, and that place is going to
- 48:50Speaker 4: be rocking. Oh, yeah.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I think it's starting to feel real for the Guardians.
- 48:55Speaker 1: They've had success. They've been in a lot of postseason
- 48:57Speaker 1: action lately.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:00Speaker 1: But they're looking and they're seeing a lane. We knew
- 49:02Speaker 1: there was a lane in the American League. Everyone said
- 49:04Speaker 1: this all year. Hey, there's a lane for a team
- 49:06Speaker 1: to get hot in the playoffs. And right now that
- 49:07Speaker 1: could be Cleveland. Territory 10, 10% off tickets on SeatGeek,
- 49:10Speaker 1: whether you're in Cleveland, Tampa Bay, LA, or you can
- 49:14Speaker 1: use this code anywhere. Make sure you click the link
- 49:16Speaker 1: in the description of the episode, and then that'll attach
- 49:19Speaker 1: the link to your account. download the app if you
- 49:21Speaker 1: don't have it oh it's got a halloween vibe to
- 49:32Speaker 1: it pick your poison is presented by lids the popular
- 49:35Speaker 1: segment is back if your team is out of it
- 49:39Speaker 1: Let us help you out. And in this series, a
- 49:42Speaker 1: series of segments on teams that are remaining in the postseason,
- 49:46Speaker 1: we give you some reasons on why you should root
- 49:48Speaker 1: for the Cleveland Guardians. That's the team we're going with today.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Not the Lids hat that Eric Kratz is wearing. It's
- 49:55Speaker 1: kind of weird.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I thought it was poison. I thought you were going
- 49:59Speaker 2: to pick your poison. I was going to pick the
- 50:00Speaker 2: poison of the White Sox. That's why I wore my
- 50:03Speaker 2: Lids White Sox hat.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Well, the poison for the White Sox actually this year
- 50:06Speaker 1: was the Cleveland Guardians since they were able to defeat
- 50:09Speaker 1: them in the division and in the postseason. So if
- 50:13Speaker 1: you don't have a team in the race, like let's
- 50:15Speaker 1: say you're a White Sox fan, AJ.
- 50:18Speaker 2: White Sox fans, they root for Cleveland. Hate to break
- 50:20Speaker 2: it to you. You can try and say that.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Okay, well, someone's rooting for Cleveland, okay? That's not a
- 50:25Speaker 1: Guardians fan. And perhaps they're looking at a team that
- 50:27Speaker 1: hasn't won a World Series title since 1948 or– a
- 50:31Speaker 1: player in Jose Ramirez, who's a future Hall of Famer,
- 50:33Speaker 1: who has had, I would say, as little help as
- 50:36Speaker 1: almost any superstar in baseball over the years, and he's
- 50:39Speaker 1: been able to keep this team competitive. It's a super
- 50:42Speaker 1: low payroll. In fact, it's the lowest payroll, right, at
- 50:45Speaker 1: the moment, the Cleveland Guardians? So there are a lot
- 50:47Speaker 1: of reasons here. If you like the underdog story, AJ,
- 50:50Speaker 1: this is that team. If you buy that money can't
- 50:53Speaker 1: buy happiness or money does buy happiness in MLB, then
- 50:56Speaker 1: first off, you're wrong because three of the four teams
- 50:58Speaker 1: don't spend much. But if you're into that, the Guardians
- 51:00Speaker 1: are also a team to root for. So why else
- 51:02Speaker 1: should people root for the Cleveland Guardians at this point?
- 51:05Speaker 2: What did Joe Kim Noah say? I've never heard of
- 51:11Speaker 2: anybody going to Cleveland to vacation, right? So they deserve it.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Nobody goes to Cleveland on vacation. By the way, it's
- 51:18Speaker 2: a great look, the Sherlock Holmes look, the two hats.
- 51:20Speaker 3: See that?
- 51:21Speaker 2: That's a good look, by the way. But they deserve it.
- 51:26Speaker 2: They haven't won since, what is it, 48.
- 51:30Speaker 1: I just said it.
- 51:30Speaker 2: 1948. They haven't won since 48. I blank, Scott. Sorry,
- 51:34Speaker 2: we all make mistakes, okay? We're not all perfect like you. 1948.
- 51:37Speaker 2: They haven't won since 48. And Steven Vo, two-time manager
- 51:41Speaker 2: of the year. He's been there forever. The fans have
- 51:43Speaker 2: been through hell. 1997, C95, 97, 2016, where they, like
- 51:45Speaker 2: Ozzie said, in 2016 against the Cubs. I'm still bitter
- 51:48Speaker 2: about the Indians-Guardians for that. and Jason Kipnis, so they
- 51:59Speaker 2: deserve it. If you want to root for a team
- 52:01Speaker 2: that deserves it probably more than any other team, Cleveland
- 52:04Speaker 2: Guardians fans have been through a lot of hell, and
- 52:06Speaker 2: they deserve to win a World Series at some point.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I can't believe I just said that. Wow, that was amazing.
- 52:14Speaker 4: I got stunned at how you sold that right there.
- 52:17Speaker 4: But the biggest thing for me is this is a
- 52:21Speaker 4: winning team. You're leaving your team to choose another team
- 52:25Speaker 4: that's left– You want to choose a team that's consistently winning.
- 52:30Speaker 4: As much as you'd be like, well, you know, they
- 52:32Speaker 4: don't do this well, they don't do that well, they
- 52:33Speaker 4: don't spend a lot of money, blah, blah, blah. This
- 52:36Speaker 4: team wins. This team knows how to win. And this
- 52:40Speaker 4: is the year for them to push it across the line.
- 52:43Speaker 4: The other part is if you become a Guardians fan,
- 52:48Speaker 4: you get to go to a game in Cleveland in
- 52:49Speaker 4: two days. You get to go home and watch your
- 52:53Speaker 4: team in what I think is one of the more
- 52:56Speaker 4: underrated parks. Maybe AJ hates it because he was in
- 53:00Speaker 4: the Central and he played through the heydays of the
- 53:05Speaker 4: Indians and how good they were.
- 53:06Speaker 2: But to me– And had to listen to that stupid drum. Gosh,
- 53:10Speaker 2: I'll never get that drum out of my head. I
- 53:12Speaker 2: love the– RIP, I forget the guy's name that played
- 53:15Speaker 2: the drum, but how did they not have someone like
- 53:17Speaker 2: an honorary drum guy? Gosh, if I had– That and
- 53:20Speaker 2: the Pac-Man. They do the stupid Pac-Man thing every time.
- 53:23Speaker 2: I love both.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Oh!
- 53:24Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 53:26Speaker 2: It's not Pac-Man, is it? I thought it was the coin.
- 53:28Speaker 2: It's the coin from Mario. Oh, yeah, Super Mario. Ba-ding, ba-ding.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I love both.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Of those things. I love them so much. Oh, the
- 53:36Speaker 2: guy playing. There was times where I just wanted to
- 53:38Speaker 2: throw a baseball. Because as soon as the guy would
- 53:40Speaker 2: get in scoring position, you just... And this was back
- 53:42Speaker 2: when there was like 42 people in the stands. And
- 53:44Speaker 2: you're just here.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Boom, boom, boom, boom. And you're like... Dude, they're not
- 53:50Speaker 2: going to score. Can we just stop this, please? I mean,
- 53:53Speaker 2: most of the time, the Indians' guardians are pretty good.
- 53:55Speaker 2: But there were years where they weren't so good. And
- 53:57Speaker 2: for me, it was like, oh, my gosh, I got
- 53:59Speaker 2: to hear that drum for the next three days. Please
- 54:02Speaker 2: make it stop.
- 54:04Speaker 1: That means it worked.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I know.
- 54:06Speaker 3: I know.
- 54:07Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 54:08Speaker 2: I know. It did work. It did.
- 54:11Speaker 3: It did.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Oh, no. You're inspiring many young drummers out there to
- 54:14Speaker 1: show up to the ballpark and just drum their life away.
- 54:16Speaker 2: How do they not have, like, an honorary drum guy
- 54:19Speaker 2: every day sit up there and just boo, boo, boo, boo, boo,
- 54:22Speaker 2: boo for hours upon hours? Got to be on a
- 54:25Speaker 2: deep rhythm. Sometimes I don't think there was a rhythm.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Just get two kids and just beat the drum all
- 54:34Speaker 2: day long.
- 54:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Talk to me, AJ.
- 54:38Speaker 2: When we just showed that, did you see the... The
- 54:43Speaker 2: thing we just showed, the guy, we just showed shaking
- 54:46Speaker 2: hands and the guy who put the White Sox to sleep,
- 54:48Speaker 2: Jose Ramirez. A nicer, humbler, better player that deserves to
- 54:56Speaker 2: win a championship. If you're looking for the one guy,
- 55:00Speaker 2: maybe Christian Yelich would be the other one. In all
- 55:03Speaker 2: these playoffs, that has not won a World Series and
- 55:06Speaker 2: has done nothing but the right thing his entire career.
- 55:11Speaker 2: How can you not want Jose Ramirez to win a championship?
- 55:13Speaker 2: I mean, if we're just going pure Cleveland love fest,
- 55:16Speaker 2: which we are because Lid sent us this really red
- 55:19Speaker 2: hat that I have on, you have to root for
- 55:22Speaker 2: Jose Ramirez. Do you not?
- 55:24Speaker 1: Yes, he plays hurt. And AJ, he plays the game
- 55:27Speaker 1: more than the right way. He's looked at as one
- 55:29Speaker 1: of the best base runners, one of the smartest baseball minds.
- 55:32Speaker 1: How about the game one slide back into the bag?
- 55:35Speaker 1: And how many guys can execute a unique slide back
- 55:39Speaker 1: into the bag like that? Is there a name for
- 55:40Speaker 1: that kind of slide? Was it the hook or whatever?
- 55:44Speaker 2: It's good. That was just a survival slide. Just a
- 55:49Speaker 2: survival slide. Because it was bad base running to round
- 55:52Speaker 2: too far.
- 55:53Speaker 3: Yeah, but he got back.
- 55:54Speaker 1: How many dudes get back that way?
- 55:57Speaker 2: No.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Not many. And stick the bag, right? They thought he
- 56:01Speaker 1: was off the bag for a moment.
- 56:02Speaker 2: They thought he was off? I'm like, as William Contreras
- 56:07Speaker 2: did yesterday.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Well, the box score says he was safe.
- 56:12Speaker 2: And by the way, you know what else? By the way,
- 56:14Speaker 2: you know what else? When he goes, I love Cleveland.
- 56:16Speaker 2: They signed me. They drafted or they developed me. They
- 56:21Speaker 2: signed me to an extension. And he's like, I love Cleveland.
- 56:25Speaker 2: I mean, those are the people you want representing your organization.
- 56:28Speaker 2: Are they not?
- 56:29Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 56:30Speaker 2: And by the way, he's not a big human being.
- 56:33Speaker 2: He's not a big guy at all. He's like tiny.
- 56:35Speaker 2: There's one, there's been in my, in my, I've been
- 56:38Speaker 2: married to my wife for a long time. There's been
- 56:40Speaker 2: two people that she's ever asked for a picture for.
- 56:42Speaker 2: And one of them is Jose Ramirez.
- 56:44Speaker 1: That's respect.
- 56:45Speaker 2: And she knows, she loves that guy. She loves that guy, man.
- 56:49Speaker 1: That's respect.
- 56:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:51Speaker 1: He's not an intimidating presence, but he is. If you
- 56:54Speaker 1: watch the way that he plays, pick your poison presented
- 56:56Speaker 1: by lids, your home for all post-season headwear and apparel
- 56:58Speaker 1: needs text territory to two nine zero one seven. Get

- 57:06Speaker 1: and exclusions do apply. And if we convinced you, great.
- 57:09Speaker 1: If we did not, we'll try tomorrow with a different team.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Let's slap a lot to hit with two minutes to go.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Foul Territory postgame show live after NLCS game three. We're
- 57:29Speaker 1: taking one night off if that's okay. If not, maybe
- 57:32Speaker 1: AJ will do a live reaction in bed after the
- 57:35Speaker 1: ALCS game two matchup. But NLCS game three is when
- 57:39Speaker 1: we'll be back at night. We'll do a Wednesday nighter.
- 57:42Speaker 1: We're going to do a Thursday nighter. And then we'll
- 57:44Speaker 1: see from there. So catch us late night on the
- 57:49Speaker 1: FT YouTube channel. Hey, I just saw this. Our guest list.
- 57:54Speaker 1: For tomorrow's show, Wednesday's show, is Tyler Phillips and Joey
- 57:59Speaker 1: Votto is joining us. Did you guys see the tweet
- 58:01Speaker 1: about the batting cage that he put out there, about
- 58:04Speaker 1: the Milwaukee batting cage? He was kind of smashing that.
- 58:06Speaker 1: A lot of hot takes from Joey lately. He wants
- 58:08Speaker 1: to see an Eli De La Cruz for, I'm going
- 58:11Speaker 1: to forget who it was. Oh, Jose de Paula trade.
- 58:14Speaker 1: He thinks that AJ would hit 150 if he was
- 58:19Speaker 1: playing in the sport right now. So I'm looking forward
- 58:22Speaker 1: to that debate.
- 58:23Speaker 2: There's nothing wrong with hitting 150, okay? You can still
- 58:27Speaker 2: have a big heart and love everybody if you hit 150, okay?
- 58:32Speaker 2: That's true. I agree.
- 58:33Speaker 1: You can still be on FT. That's good.
- 58:38Speaker 2: You can be on FT. Is he really coming on tomorrow?
- 58:43Speaker 3: I think so. Why?
- 58:45Speaker 2: Well, I just didn't think he would come back on.
- 58:47Speaker 2: I'm happy that he's coming back. We have a lot
- 58:49Speaker 2: to talk about him and I.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Why wouldn't he come back on? He's a media member now.
- 58:52Speaker 1: This is what he does. He goes on shows and
- 58:54Speaker 1: he talks.
- 58:56Speaker 2: I know, but there was some tension last time.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Good. We like tension. He likes tension.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Does he?
- 59:03Speaker 1: I think so.
- 59:06Speaker 2: If you say so, Scott, I'm going to trust you
- 59:07Speaker 2: on this one.
- 59:08Speaker 1: I want a good debate. By the way, support. Is
- 59:11Speaker 1: this a great game or what? Tim and Jeff Kirkjian.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Good show. Lots of shows on the FG network with
- 59:18Speaker 1: good postseason coverage.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Good fellas.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Good guys. Good fellas.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Good fellas right down the road too.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Remember? That's right. Remember when we used to do that?
- 59:26Speaker 1: We had that bit for a little bit. Like, oh,
- 59:28Speaker 1: that guy, he's good fella. You guys remember that?
- 59:30Speaker 2: Good guy.
- 59:31Speaker 1: He's a good guy.
- 59:32Speaker 3: Good guy.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Terrible ball player.
- 59:35Speaker 3: Good guy.
- 59:35Speaker 2: Hey, sometimes that's more important.
- 59:40Speaker 3: Good guy.
- 59:41Speaker 1: That's true.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Sometimes that's more important. Grads, tell them. You'll keep guys
- 59:45Speaker 2: around if they're good guys. Believe me. Sometimes it happens.
- 59:48Speaker 2: I mean, it doesn't sound like.
- 59:49Speaker 3: On that topic.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Well, I'll point this out, AJ. So, obviously, you guys
- 59:54Speaker 1: were catchers. the Cleveland guardians have two catchers who were
- 59:59Speaker 1: terrible hitters at one point in their career. And they've
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: kind of figured it out at least much better than
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: they used to be. Austin Hedges had a good year.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Patrick Bailey hit way better when he went over to Cleveland.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: And it does make you start to think like, Whoa,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I mean, I know he's, he's doing the classic, like, Hey,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: if you do make contact, let's just do a little
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: pulled fly ball, like the very modern style here. But
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: for him, like that, that is the move AJ. Cause
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: he's not making a lot of contact consistently. So if
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: you're going to like, let's, Make sure it rides.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Go deep 425 feet to center field. Sure, that works.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: That plays in every stadium. Not the one that he
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: got traded from. Not the one where he was hitting
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: three homers a year. So I'll put it this way.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: If you're considered a bad offensive player, it is not
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: helping you to go to San Francisco. Especially if you're like,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: I'm going to hit dingers. If you hit singles, it's
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: a good place to hit. Best line I heard all
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: year from a manager coach.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: He goes, Stephen Vogt. We're meeting with Stephen Vogt before
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: one of the Fox games. And he goes, you know
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: who just thinks they should hit a home run every time?
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Austin Hedges. Every time. He can't believe that he makes outs.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: And we all look at each other like, he's like
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: a career 190 hitter. He's like, I know. But every
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: time he makes an out, he can't believe that he
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: didn't hit a home run on the pitch. He's like,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: that's confidence. And I'm like, you know what? You're right.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: That's my golf game to a tee. Every single ball
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: I stand over is going pin high. It might just
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: spray sprayed every way.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Confidence is better than lack of confidence. And Austin Hedges
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: is still doing it. And they try to wrap him
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: up once the year ends, if they don't have them
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: as quickly as possible. So they're loving what he's bringing.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: To the table. You can fake a lot in a
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: lot of positions in life. You can fake it. And
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: if you just say it with your chest. It might
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: be the dumbest thing someone's ever heard, but they're like, oh, man,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: maybe he's got a point. He's saying it like with confidence.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Maybe he's got a point.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: That's right. And all of a sudden the pitcher's like, wait,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: is this guy good? And then he has a year
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: like that.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: True.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: He had a great year. Austin Hedges had a hell
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: of a year. Look at his numbers.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: He really did.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: One of the reasons they could afford to move Bo Naylor.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: That's right. And Bailey's second half was way better. Look
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: at the numbers. Way, way, way better.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: By the way, Bo Nailer's on the Brewers. I had
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: no idea. Bo Nailer's on the Brewers. I had no idea.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: He's there. He's like their emergency catcher in case something happens.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: He's there just in case. He's there, Eric Kratz. That'll
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: be the new position. Not on the roster, but cheering
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: his face off.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: What position are you, Kratz? See you Wednesday.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Oh, Kratz.
