- 1:49A great way these great companies wish to thank you for your support.
- 1:53And today it's the second game of the 1962 World Series.
- 1:58Two right handers, Jack Sanford who has won 24 and lost 7.
- 2:03Sanford is the choice of manager Alvin Dard.
- 2:06Jack is warming up, a right of home plate and Ralph Terry who has won 23 and lost 12.
- 2:13Terry warming up for the New York Yankees.
- 2:16A beautiful day for baseball here at Candlestick.
- 2:20Temperature at game time 61 degrees.
- 2:23It's a high sky once again so we'll look for the glasses and the infielders to be really battling these pop flies.
- 2:30Sanford against Terry.
- 2:32Now this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the commissioner of baseball
- 2:37solely for the entertainment of our listening audience and any publication.
- 2:41Re-broadcast or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the express consent of the commissioner is prohibited.
- 2:49Ralph Terry a determined young man as he warms up and he makes no bones about it.
- 2:54Terry says I've never won a World Series game and I want to win one.
- 2:59You just can't be any more honest about it or any more straightforward than a young Mr. Ralph Terry.
- 3:05Terry as far as his stuff and you can talk to the older fellas pitching coach Johnny Sane, manager Ralph Hough, Jim Hegan, Wally Moses,
- 3:14Whitey Ford, any of them and they'll say that Ralph Terry this year became a pitcher.
- 3:18Up until this year he was pretty much a thrower.
- 3:21He relies on a slow curve ball.
- 3:24A curve ball with great rotation. It's a tough ball to get under.
- 3:28He throws a slider and according to both his catchers, Elson Howard and the Yogi Bear, he's got all the equipment.
- 3:35Yogi Bear by the way will be in the lineup along with Dale Long injuries to Elson Howard, a bit of a sprained wrist.
- 3:43Howard suffered and sliding into Aunt Bailey in yesterday's ball game.
- 3:46He brought Yogi Bear into the lineup and Dale Long is replaced with Moose Scarron who's out with a bad back.
- 3:53Ralph Terry has had a great year for the Yankees 23 and 12.
- 3:57Of course the negative statistic that is brought up and I think it's a ridiculous statistic is the golfer ball
- 4:02where they say his fellas giving up so many home runs.
- 4:05The reason that I don't particularly lean on it from past experience, give me the pitcher who's around the plate
- 4:11who doesn't walk many and they're going to hit home runs off him.
- 4:14You look at the golfer ball statistics and you're going to find great pitchers in that list.
- 4:19You're going to find a fella like Rob and Roberts and nobody will deny how great he is.
- 4:23A Ralph Terry, a Larry Jackson, a Carl Erskine.
- 4:27You're not going to hit home runs if you're getting a base on balls and a fella who gives up the base on balls is a fella who gets beat.
- 4:33Ralph Terry, a fine pitcher for the Yankees this year 23 and 12 and he's going against Jack Sanford who this year,
- 4:40I guess the supreme compliment paid to him was by his manager Alvin Dark who when you ask Alvin,
- 4:46what's the big difference in Sanford?
- 4:48We know him in a national league as a hard-throwing right-hander who when he got in a jam would rare back and fire that fastball.
- 4:55And Alvin says that it's a different Jack Sanford this year.
- 4:59It's a fella who will not give in to the hitter.
- 5:02When he gets behind three balls, one strike, two balls and no strikes,
- 5:06it's no longer a match of Sanford's strength which is his great fastball against the hitter's strength.
- 5:12If he thinks that the hitter can be gotten by a breaking ball,
- 5:17he'll go to the breaking ball, in the jam, bases, loader, what have you.
- 5:21He's not afraid to throw something beside that fastball when he's behind the hitter.
- 5:26And that's been the big difference as far as Jack Sanford is concerned.
- 5:30He throws a slider, a good high-riding fastball, he'll get that fastball up and get it by you
- 5:36and he's got a good curveball which he relies on heavily.
- 5:39And of course as we just mentioned the great confidence that only 20 game winners have.
- 5:44This fella believes that he can win and can say the same for Ralph Terry.
- 5:50The Yankees have made the two changes we mentioned.
- 5:53Barrow will replace Howard and Dealong is replaced with Moose Scarra.
- 5:56Alvin Dark has made some changes in his lineup.
- 5:59Both the Alou boys, Philippe Alou and Maddie Alou will be in the lineup.
- 6:03Maddie Alou will be replacing Harvey Keane in left field.
- 6:06And I think Willie McCovey will be at first base today.
- 6:09McCovey a powerful left-hand hitter will be going against a right-handed pitcher Ralph Terry.
- 6:15And behind the plate we've got a change in Tom Haller will be replacing Ed Bailey who worked the ball game yesterday.
- 6:25Haller and Sanford the batteries for the San Francisco Giants and for the Yankees it'll be Ralph Terry and Yogi Berra.
- 6:34You know the big talk around the batting case today that was interesting to get the reaction of the San Francisco Giants
- 6:43and most of them felt that the playoffs and the battle that they had to get into the World Series really took something away from them
- 6:50as far as the first game is concerned.
- 6:52Harvey Keane puts it to where he says no matter how hard you tried to get up with a ball game yesterday
- 6:57you just couldn't do it. You couldn't get the maximum effort after the last four or five days that we've had.
- 7:04Orlando Sopeta says well today we lose but tomorrow we get back in the groove he was talking about today.
- 7:10But it'll be Ralph Terry who'll be trying to stop these San Francisco Giants and it'll be Jack Sanford who'll be pitching for the San Francisco Giants.
- 7:27Well a bullpen crew has headed towards the left field corner for the Giants. They're going to get out early.
- 7:32The ground crew is working on the infield and George why do you always smile when you see a ground crew working around third base.
- 7:40You guys always like to see those bad hops get taken away from you.
- 7:43I'm just watching them water the infield downs Joe that makes them nice and soft and you get those good hops and they don't scoot by you fast.
- 7:50Well Joe gave you the starting pitcher to this afternoon and relief pitching could play a large part in this World Series yet
- 7:56and the Yankees are lucky to have a strong relief staff with men like Daily, Coach, Senoroya and then all Gillette men too.
- 8:04Here's the way Bud Daily puts it. So many of the ball players are Gillette users. How about you Bud?
- 8:09Count me in too Mel. You can't match the comfort of a Super Blue Blades and men is it fast?
- 8:15Well I mean I say that Bud is sold on Gillette Super Blue Blades and so are millions of enthusiastic users everywhere.
- 8:22A unique and exclusive Gillette process gives them edges that are so keen, so smooth you get clean shaves, quick shaves.
- 8:30With such little effort it's almost unbelievable. Super Blues are double-edged too so you get many extra shaves for Blades.
- 8:38Why don't you enjoy the unparalleled comfort and refreshment of Super Blue Blades in the new Gillette Slim adjustable racer.
- 8:45It's lighter and longer for easier handling and better balance. It's more compact with a newly designed shaving head that gets right into those tricky hard to reach areas under the nose and chin.
- 8:56Right now you get both. The Slim adjustable racer and Super Blue Blades plus a 79 cent can of Gillette foamy instant ladder and you save 34 cents.
- 9:07It's the Gillette World Series Special, a $229 value for only $1.95.
- 9:20The lineups for the Yankees, Tony Kubeck will lead off at shortstop. Kubeck shortstop.
- 9:26Batting second it's Bobby Richardson at second base. Richardson second base.
- 9:31Batting third it's the left fielder Tom Treche. Treche in left field.
- 9:35Batting fourth it's the center fielder Mickey Mannell. Mannell in center field.
- 9:40Batting fifth the right fielder Roger Merriss. Merriss in right field.
- 9:44Batting sixth the catcher Yogi Berra. Berra the catcher.
- 9:49Batting seventh the first baseman Dale Long. Long at first base.
- 9:53Batting eighth the third baseman Cleetus Boyer. Boyer third base.
- 9:58And batting ninth the pitcher Ralph Terry. Terry the pitcher bats ninth. He's won 23 he's lost 12.
- 10:05For the San Francisco Giants Chuck Hiller at second base. Hiller second base.
- 10:11Batting second the right fielder Philippe Alou. A-L-O-U Philippe Alou in right field.
- 10:18Batting third it's Maddie Alou. Maddie Alou in left field.
- 10:24Batting fourth the center fielder Willie Mays. Mays in center field.
- 10:28Batting fifth McCovey. M-C capital C-O-V-E-Y McCovey at first base.
- 10:35Batting sixth it's the catcher Tom Haller. H-A-L-L-E-R Haller the catcher.
- 10:42And batting seventh it's Jim Davenport the third baseman. Davenport at third base.
- 10:47Batting eighth it's Jose Pagan. Pagan at shortstop.
- 10:51And batting ninth it's Jack Sanford the pitcher. Sanford is won 24 and he has lost 7.
- 10:59Sanford against Terry the second game of the 1962 World Series.
- 11:05The umpires have just come out they've gathered around home played along with
- 11:10coach Whitey Lockman of the San Francisco Giants and manager Ralph Halp of the New York Yankees.
- 11:16Yesterday's ball game the Yankees behind Whitey Ford 6-2.
- 11:21You talk about a turning point in yesterday's ball game and manager Alvin Darker the Giants
- 11:26like the real professional that he is says the turning point in yesterday's ball game was Whitey Ford.
- 11:32Whitey had tremendous pitcher out here and it was a 6-2 victory for the Yankees.
- 11:39Orlando Sapega is being rested today. Reason given is that he seems to be just weary and tired.
- 11:46Big first baseman and outfielder for the Giants has played some 260 games of baseball this year.
- 11:52Of course we're talking about winter league activity.
- 11:55So today it'll be Willie McCovey and then McCovey has been some hitter for these San Francisco Giants this year.
- 12:0120 home runs 54 runs batting in at 293 and 91 games.
- 12:06And now ladies and gentlemen our national anthem.
- 13:06Music
- 13:22So with the playing of the national anthem it's play ball here in Candlestick Park.
- 13:28Back all the time it's going to be a win.
- 13:31And it's going from the left field corner towards the right field corner. Terry against Benford the stage is being set.
- 13:38So let's pause right now 10 seconds for station identification.
- 13:44Are you mixing with the best?
- 13:47Saratoga fishy with the terrible label it outsells all the rest.
- 13:54WGY's connected it.
- 13:56All players as they took their positions both the infielders the outfielders looking towards the sky adjusting the sunglasses.
- 14:02It's a high sky as we mentioned there are no clouds and when there are no clouds in that sky you can look for just a little bit of a battle on the pop flies.
- 14:10The wind is blowing from the left field corner towards the right field corner and they'll be shading towards right center field and the right field line.
- 14:18Whitey Ford said he had trouble breaking his curve ball because he had to break it into the wind. He expects that the right handers love to pitch in his ballpark because the wind blowing from left to right will help the right handed pitchers curve ball.
- 14:31So we'll soon see we've got two good ones out there this afternoon. Jack Sanford for San Francisco Giants.
- 14:37Ralph Terry for the New York Yankees and George Kale the second game of the 1962 World Series is about to begin and it looks like it's going to be a thing to just hang around that batting cage. Listen those fellas talk.
- 14:50Absolutely Joe and it's another baseball fine baseball afternoon here in San Francisco. Just as yesterday and it might be a little bit warmer here today.
- 14:59The right sunshine afternoon and another high sky which will give the infielders and the outfielders a bit of trouble on those high fly balls and another capacity turnout here at Candlestick Park as they are jamming their way into the stadium and still coming in for the second game of this 1962 World Series.
- 15:18And in case somebody don't know it the Yankees won yesterday by a score of 6 to 2 behind the brilliant pitching of Whitey Ford and today they'll send their young right hander Ralph Terry to the mound to try to make it too straight.
- 15:31Terry won 23 and lost 12 this year and his mound opponent will be Jack Sanford who's warming up right now. Jack won 24 and lost 7. Sanford has pitched three times in the last six days and we were talking to Jack before the ball game today.
- 15:47He has been bothered with a bad cold for the past two weeks and he said it might be even worse today instead of better but he said in a World Series there's only one way to go and that's all out and he said I'll go as far as I can and then somebody will have to come get me if I need help.
- 16:03So we're ready to go. Tony Cubak stepping in to lead off. He'll be followed by Bobby Richardson then Tommy Trish.
- 16:13Cubak a left handed batter. Sanford gets ready and here's the first pitch of the ball game. Strike he got the fast ball over.
- 16:24Tony had two hits and five trips to the plate yesterday. They were both singles. He's batting at 400 going into the second game of this series.
- 16:33A one strike count. Sanford into the wind up. The pitch. Ball it's down low. He got the fast ball over but too low. One ball, one strike.
- 16:44The wind is blowing a little bit harder today at the start of the game than it was yesterday and it's still blowing from the left field corner across to the right field corner.
- 16:54Here's the one one pitch. A line drive two hops to the second baseman. Heller has it to throw the first. He's out. Cubak kept down one like a bullet.
- 17:04A low liner. Two hops right into the glove as Heller of second base. That'll bring up Bobby Richardson. Bobby's a little right handed batter.
- 17:16This little fellow had one hit yesterday and five trips. That was a single in the first inning.
- 17:27Here's the first pitch. Ball it's inside. One ball and no strikes to Bobby Richardson.
- 17:38Davenport at third base is about even with a bag and McCurvy is in about three steps from first base. Here's the one in no pitch.
- 17:46A ground ball hit to the shortstop. McGahn has it to throw the first. He's out. Bobby Richardson goes out. Short stifters. That's two down and the batter will be Tom Thresh.
- 18:00Jack Sanford if he's got his good stuff you should see a lot of ground balls because he should pitch down. In fact that's one of the warning signs that the giant coaches and the manager looks for.
- 18:09When Sanford starts to get sloppy leg action and starts to get the ball up then they think he's tired and then they start getting that bullpen ready.
- 18:19Tommy Thresh a switch batter. He's fighting left handed against Sanford. Here's the first pitch. Ball outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 18:29Thresh had two hits yesterday and five trips both singles. A lot of hitting on both sides out here in the first game yesterday. Yankees picked up 11 and the Giants 10.
- 18:43Here's the one in no pitch. Ball outside. A ball two and a no strike count. Mickey Mannell is waiting in the on-deck circle. We're in the top of the first. There's two outs with no one on.
- 18:55Jack Sanford against Ralph Terry here today in the second game. Jack into the wind up. Here's the two and no pitch. Ball outside. Three and oh to Thresh.
- 19:08Sanford trying to catch the outside corner with a fastball is missed with three straight.
- 19:15The crowd is still coming in here at Candlestick. Very few vacant seats in this ballpark. A perfect baseball afternoon. Here's a three and oh pitch. Down low he walked in.
- 19:31Tom Thresh walks on four straight pitches. It's a runner at first base with two outs and the batter will be Mickey Mannell at center fielder. Mickey's a switch batter and he'll be batting left handed against Sanford.
- 19:46Mannell is hitless so far in the series. Four trips to the plate yesterday without a hit.
- 19:55The Giants move deep and around to the right for Mickey. Second baseman Hiller back on the edge of the outfield grass. McCovey of course holds against the runner at first base.
- 20:07Here's a quick throw to first. Thresh back in town. They now lose getting deep in the right field Joe. He's going to need a reserve seat ticket to get back in.
- 20:15He's about as deep as you can go Joe and pull far to the right. Of course Mannell, strictly a pull hitter and with a runner at first base, he'll be trying to pull something down the right field line.
- 20:27Sanford delivers. Down low. One ball and no strikes. Jack got the first two batters. Cuback bounce to the second baseman. Bobby Richardson bounce to the shortstop.
- 20:39Then Tommy Thresh drew a walk on four straight pitches. Now it's one ball, no strikes to Mannell. Sanford checks his runner. The pitch. Ball. It's a pass. Pass ball above the letters.
- 20:52A ball too and a no strike count. This is a big ball game for both clubs. If any one ball game could be big, the Giants almost certainly need a win in their own ballpark.
- 21:08They would hate to go back east behind two to O and the Yankees of course trying to wrap it up as quick as they can would like to take a two O lead into their home ballpark.
- 21:19Sanford taking a little time right now looking into his catcher Tom Huller. Here's the two and no pitch. Strike. He got the pass ball over. A ball too and a strike one count.
- 21:34The Giants have made a few changes in the lineup. They have Maddie Allou in left field today. Tom Huller is doing the catching in place of Ed Bailey.
- 21:42And Willie McCabe is at first base in place of Orlando Cepeda. Jack Sanford of course the new pitcher.
- 21:51Now Sanford taking a little time steps off the rubber. Jack working slowly with a runner at first and two outs. Here's the pitch. Down low. Three and one to Mickey Mannell.
- 22:03Jack trying to hit the corners against these last two batters. There's not missing by much. He is just off the corner. Both to Trish and to Mickey Mannell.
- 22:14Mickey's right down on the end of the bat waiting. A ball three and a strike one count. Roger Merris is in the on-deck circle. Here's the pitch.
- 22:26He swings and pups it up behind shortstop. Jose Pagan going out on the grass and left field makes the catch. No run. No hits. No errors. One man left.
- 22:37And the score at the end of the first pass at first end of the Yankee is nothing with the Giants coming to bat. Well Billy Pierce will be pitching for the Giants on Sunday.
- 22:45And nobody tosses the curve better than Billy Pierce. He's got a beauty. And here he is right now talking to Russ Hodges.
- 22:52How about you Billy. Tried the new Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor yet. I've been using one for months for us and it's the greatest. Makes shaving easier than ever.
- 23:01Well if you haven't tried the adjustable yet now is the time to do so with the Gillette World Series Special. Now in it you get the new Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor with a supply of remarkable super blue blades.
- 23:13Plus a seventy nine cent can of foamy instant leather. It's a two twenty nine value and it costs only a dollar ninety five. And what shave you get. The slim is an adjustable razor.
- 23:24Now that means it has nine different dial settings. You choose the one that's exactly right for your combination of skin and beer. The Gillette Slim is lighter and trimmer for those hard to reach shaving areas.
- 23:36Slip in one of those amazing super blue blades and you have shaving comfort like never before. Look for the Gillette World Series Special only a dollar ninety five for razor blades and foamy. You save thirty four cents.
- 23:57Elston Howard was scheduled to work behind the plate today for the Yankees and he was in a starting lineup. The only change that manager Hough announced was deal along at first base because of the alien back of Moose Scarn.
- 24:08But Ellie after taking batting practice told his manager that he just couldn't snap that bat. He jammed it as he slid in there barely yesterday. So Yogi Farrell will be behind the plate today working with Ralph Perry.
- 24:22Howard ready to go in the bottom of the first inning. Chuck Teller will lead off with a giant. They'll be followed by Philippe Alou and then Maddie Alou.
- 24:31Teller a left handed batter. Here's Terry's first pitch. Striped he got a slow curve ball over.
- 24:40Teller had one hit and four trips. That was a double in the left center field. He scored the second giant run. Terry delivers. Here's a line.
- 24:52He got away from him in the corner and here he goes the second. He had to ball the umpire in right field and up with the right hand and then he stumbled and he dropped it and hanked sore.
- 25:12There was no catch. Roger Merris made an amazing play. A one handed two screen catch. He had it and stumbled and got away from him. Hanked sore said he didn't hold it long enough so Hiller is at second base with a double.
- 25:28Well that's why they have the umpire down the foul lines Joe to make those kind of decisions.
- 25:33George had just wondered if it wasn't the case of as he was running Jordan out when his elbow hit his knee. He never did leave his feet. He reached down and had it in his webbing but Jordan loose as he continued on with the momentum he had.
- 25:46Here's Philippe Alou. He butts down the first baseline. Long picks it up. Steps on the bag. Alou is out and Hiller moves to third base. It'll be a sacrifice but. Well Hiller moving along to third.
- 26:00So the Giants are threatening. They have a runner at third base with one out and the batter will be Maddie Alou. It'll be a sacrifice. No time at bat for Hiller.
- 26:16This little Maddie Alou has been a fine hitter for the Giants. He's been a real good first ball, fast ball hitter. Defensively long and boyer in close. Second baseman strikes down for back. They're willing to give the run for the out.
- 26:28Here's the first pitch. Ball. It's a pass. Fast ball above his cap. One ball and no strikes, Alou. A runner at third base with one out here in the first inning. There's no score in the ball game. Terry looking in. Here's the one and no pitch.
- 26:46A ground ball hit through the second baseman. There's a throw to first. He's out for the run. Maddie Alou hit the ball on the ground just out of the reach of long. Long lunge for the ball. And he's been able to make the play.
- 27:05He went a throw to the plate. The ball got by him. Richardson came up with a toss to back the log. Throwed a two out for the run-in. And here's Willie Mays.
- 27:16Willie had three hits in yesterday's ball game. Strong right-handed batter. Terry delivers. Ball. It's in tight. One ball and no strikes.
- 27:31Chuck Heller opened the inning with a double. Moved to third on the soccer pass and scored on the ground ball. Here's the one and no pitch to Mays. He swings and fouls it back. It'll be out of play. One ball, one strike.
- 27:47Still a lot of talk today about the day that Mays had against Ford. And Whitey said he threw everything except the rosin bag. And he said he finally learned something the last time at bat. He said Mays is human. He chased a couple bad balls.
- 28:02So ball and a strike as Terry looks in. Well, taking a lot of time. Here's the pitch. Ball outside. A ball two and a strike one count. Chottie Berry of the American League is the umpire behind the plate today.
- 28:15Stan Lambus of the National League at first base. Jim Honechip of the American League at second base. Al Bartok of the National League at third base.
- 28:25Ken Burkhardt and Hank Soar down the lines. Here's a strike, a slow curve in around the knees. Two and two. George, there's a difference in that Ralph Terry right there.
- 28:35As he comes with the slow curve ball. Not only is it the changes feed that gets these hitters, but it's the rotation. You've got a real good spin on that curve ball.
- 28:43Terry, ready? The two, two pitch. Down low, three and two. Ralph likes to pitch from behind, Joe. He loves those two one, two and o count. Then he can come in with a slow curve. He has great confidence in his ability to get it over.
- 28:57Murray Dixon was a whole lot like that too. One of that hitter to be looking for a particular pitch, he felt like he had the edge.
- 29:03Here's a three, two pitch. A swinging of S.T. Pokemon. Slow curve ball in Mays goes down swinging.
- 29:10One run on one hit. There were no errors, no one left. And the score at the end of one for letting a play. The giants won. The Yankees nothing.
- 29:18Well, no one can guarantee the outcome of this World Series, not until the last out is made. But one thing we can guarantee right now is a paper-mate pin.
- 29:28The paper-mate pin you buy must perform or we replace it free. And now is the best time to buy a paper-mate. At the big fall, paper-mate free for all.
- 29:37You buy a paper-mate piggyback pin for $1.69 and you get an extra piggyback refill free. Or you can buy a paper-mate capri pin for $1.95 and you get an extra jumbo refill free.
- 29:51You get paper-mate defendability plus extra refills free. Now these are bargains you won't want to miss. So come to the big fall paper-mate free for all.
- 30:00Buy a paper-mate piggyback pin and get an extra piggyback refill free. Or buy a paper-mate capri pin and get an extra jumbo refill free.
- 30:10Come to the paper-mate free for all now. Wherever paper-mate pins are sold.
- 30:15Now at the end of one inning of play, the Giants are out in front of the Yankees by a score of 1-0. A double by Hillard, a sacrifice and a ground ball to the second base getting the run in.
- 30:33So the Yankees will send up Roger Marist to lead off. He'll be followed by Yogi Berra, then they'll off.
- 30:41Yankees have a couple of casualties early in the series. Bill Scowern is out with a bad back. And Elston Hallard reported unable to play just before game time today.
- 30:54Here's Marist stepping in.
- 30:56They're overshifting on him, George, for the first time in this series. Sharkstop Pagan is on the second base side.
- 31:02And the Hillard protects the gap between first and second. Sanford delivers outside one ball and no strikes. Not only overshifting Joe, but they're pitching him outside.
- 31:11Trying to get him to pull something on the ground. Of course, Rod strictly a pull-hitter, especially against right-handed pitching. Sanford ready. Here's the 1-0 pitch.
- 31:22He swings and fouls it back. It's coming back in the crowd. One ball, one strike.
- 31:27They've had a little bit of a cold war here as far as Roger Marist is concerned. The newspapers have been running a little box.
- 31:33Roger, when he was here for the All-Star game, in a real windy day, said something like, if I had to play here the rest of my career, I think I'd consider quitting.
- 31:43And they just haven't let him...they just won't let him forget about it. They keep running it, and they keep running it, and fans keep hollering it to him.
- 31:49Sanford ready, and here's the 1-1 pitch. Strike. He got the fastball over. Marist was going to bust.
- 31:55He had charged up in front of the plate. He was going to push one down the third baseline, and any kind of a bun at all would be a sure-base hit.
- 32:04Now, Davenport is playing deep and wide of the bag.
- 32:07That third baseman looks like the Lonesome Polkhead down there. All by the Lonesome. Jim Davenport.
- 32:13That's the way we used to play Ted Williams. Of course, he never hit one that way. You could figure your batting average if you had one.
- 32:21Here's the 1-2 pitch. Outside. Fastball off the corner. It's 2-2. You know a strange thing, Joe. On Williams, we used to shift even more.
- 32:29I'd go over clear end of the shortstop hole, and once in a while he would hit your ground ball, and boy, it was a strange thing.
- 32:35Feeling a ball at shortstop after playing third. You're shaking a little as he hit it to you. Wondering how you're going to make that long throw.
- 32:41Here's the 2-2 pitch. Outside again. 3-2 to Marist. That was a change of pace off the corner.
- 32:48First time I saw this shift, George was in the 46 World Series when we played the Red Sox and against Williams.
- 32:54And I'd say, I looked at the right side, and I'd never forget coming back to the bench. I'd throw a red monger.
- 32:58I'd say, you know, that right side looks like a symphony orchestra looking for work.
- 33:01The pitch to Marist is outside. He walked in. Roger Marist draws a base on ball.
- 33:07All the Yankees have the tying run at first base with no one out. And the batter will be Yogi Barrow.
- 33:13Yogi a last minute replacement for Elston Howard. He was reported unable to play after taking batting practice.
- 33:22Left handed batter. I think the amount of shook Yogi up a little telling him he's in there at the last moment.
- 33:28I asked him when I found out he was going to ask, are you nervous, Yogi? Yeah.
- 33:33I bet he is.
- 33:36Yogi Barrow waiting on Sandberg. Here's the first pitch. Strike, he got the fast ball right down the middle.
- 33:46Roger Marist is on at first base with no one out. We're on the top of the second inning. The Giants lead the Yankees one to nothing.
- 33:55The Giants play Yogi much as they played Manel. Far to right field.
- 34:00Feel the blue and right field very deep. Here's the pitch. Ball down low. He got the fast ball over but too low.
- 34:08One ball, one strike. McCabe is holding against the runner at first base. And Hiller has moved over toward first base.
- 34:17He's about split the difference between first and second. Yogi right down on the end of the bat.
- 34:26Here's the one-one pitch. Outside, this one out the corner. A ball two and a strike one count.
- 34:41This is a 13th World Series for Yogi Barrow.
- 34:48He's waiting on Jack Sandberg. Jack taking a little time right now. Check's the sign. The two-one pitch.
- 34:54A ground ball hit for the second base from right field. Over to second back to first.
- 35:05Yogi Barrow hit one on the ground to Hiller who flipped it over to McGon for the four-shot on Marist and the relay back to McGovey in plenty of time.
- 35:15The most double play is just don't happen. That's Sandberg really working on Yogi. Good slider inside and Yogi get a perfect double play for all the Hillers.
- 35:24They have scouting reports. They talk about it in the clubhouse and it's up to that pitcher to go out and do the job.
- 35:29And Sandberg did a good one that time. Here's Dale Long, the first baseman. Dale, a big left-handed batter.
- 35:38Sandberg was ready to go then he stopped, started rubbing up the baseball. Dale batted twice yesterday at one hit with a run batted in.
- 35:46There's a fastball that's in there right around the knees. A one strike count.
- 35:52All the action will chip the Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday where it'll be Billy Pierce for the Giants and Bill Stafford more than likely for the Yankees.
- 36:03Tomorrow will be a traveling day. Sandberg delivers inside, he pushed him back. One ball, one strike.
- 36:10We're in the top of the second inning. There's two outs with no one on. The Giants have a one-to-nothing lead over the Yankees.
- 36:18Another beautiful baseball afternoon here in San Francisco.
- 36:23Sandberg into the wind up. The one-one pitch. Strike! He got the offside corner with a fastball.
- 36:31As we told you before, Sandberg has walked two batters but he is not missing by much. He is trying to thread the needle on the corners.
- 36:39That's a good live fastball, a good fast-breaking curve.
- 36:44Stella's been the workhorse of the Giants staff this year.
- 36:49The pitch's along. A swing of his. He's trying to check it but he's gone too far.
- 36:54Day along goes down swinging. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left in the score at the end of the first half of the second.
- 37:01The Giants won. The Yankees nothing. Well, Hector Lopez has not been in the series yet but he will be before it's over.
- 37:08And Hector is a man of few words ordinarily but he sure gets his point across here. Let's listen.
- 37:13Hector, so you think Super Blue Blades give you better shaves?
- 37:16Well, Mel, my face feels better and my wife say I look better. That's good enough for me.
- 37:22Well, Super Blue Blades have brought new comfort and satisfaction to millions upon millions of people.
- 37:28An exclusive Gillette process makes Super Blue Edges so keen, so smooth they whisked off the heaviest beard like it wasn't even there.
- 37:36Quick clean shaves, refreshing shaves that have to be experienced to be believed.
- 37:41You get a dispenser of Super Blue Blades with a new Gillette Slam adjustable racer.
- 37:46The Slam is lighter, longer, easier to handle. It's trimmer and more compact for those hard to reach shaving areas.
- 37:53And it's adjustable to your combination of skin and beard.
- 37:56Right now the World Series Special includes the Slam with Super Blue Blades plus a 79 cent can of Gillette Fony Instant Ladder for only $1.95.
- 38:07Now it's a $2.29 value so you save 34 cents.
- 38:15That will be Willie McCovey to lead off in the second inning for the Giants.
- 38:21He'll be followed by Tom Holler and Jim Davenport.
- 38:27McCovey a big tall left-hand advantage.
- 38:32Willie playing in first base today in place of Orlando Sepeta.
- 38:39A one-to-nothing ball game as we move into the bottom of the second. The Giants out in front.
- 38:44Here's Terry's pitch. Strike the fastball around the letters.
- 38:48McCovey's a real crasher, a great big guy. He doesn't use a very heavy bat, 35 ounces, 34.5 inches long.
- 38:55It's a big thick handle bat but he really goes to work with it. He hits a weapon in his hands.
- 39:00Terry delivers another fastball. It's in there around the knees.
- 39:03A strike two count to McCovey. This is Willie's first appearance.
- 39:16Terry gets ready. A two strike pitch. A ground ball hit wide at first. Long has it. Here's a flip to Terry. He's out.
- 39:23Willie McCovey goes out. They along to the pitcher, Ralph Terry, covering first base.
- 39:28That's one away and the batter will be the catcher, Tom Haller.
- 39:37Tom's a left-handed batter and this will be his first time at bat in the World Series.
- 39:41Ed Bailey did the catching yesterday for the Giants. Tom a tall slender left-handed batter.
- 39:49Tom was spiked in the playoffs down at Dodger Stadium. He's right in the lineup today.
- 39:55Here's a swing in them is. One strike to Haller.
- 40:03The Giants have one run on one hit. No errors. The Yankees no runs. No hits and they have no errors.
- 40:10Yankees have had a couple of base runners both on walks. Here's a fastball inside. One ball, one strike.
- 40:23Terry a fast worker. He just looks in, gets a sign. He's ready to go. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 40:29Fastball hit on the ground the second base. Bobby Richardson has it. The flip to first. He's out.
- 40:34Tom Haller goes out. Second to first.
- 40:38That's two down and the batter will be Jose Pagán.
- 40:45For action, Jim Davenport the batter. Davenport the third baseman. And one hit and two traps.
- 40:54Yesterday he had a couple of walks. Right-handed batter. Chokes the ball a little as he waits on Terry.
- 41:01Here's a pitch. There's a lying drive right through the second baseman. Bobby Richardson.
- 41:07No runs. No hits. No errors. No one left. And the score at the end of two. The Giants won. The Yankees nothing.
- 41:14He's talking to Don Drysdale the other day about the heavy game schedule this year and Don admitted it took a lot out of him.
- 41:20And he said that after every game he appreciates the pick up he gets from a refreshing Gillette shave.
- 41:25Nothing does it for Don like a super blue blade in his Gillette adjustable razor.
- 41:30Well today men everywhere are switching to the new adjustable razor, the Gillette Slim. Why don't you try it?
- 41:36You'll find its streamline from head to handle with a tremor compact design.
- 41:41A tremor for hard to reach shaving areas. Longer for better balance.
- 41:45And Gillette's exclusive precision dial has nine different blade settings. You picked the one that's just right for your skin and beard.
- 41:52Right now you can get the Slim adjustable on the Gillette World Series Special along with a dispenser of double-edged super blue blades
- 42:00that delivers all but incredible shaving comfort. Plus a 79 cent can of Gillette foaming. The cream of all instant lathers.
- 42:08All for only $1.95 on the Gillette World Series Special.
- 42:13Now that's a $2.29 value and you save 34 cents.
- 42:17Charlie just sitting here watching Charlie Berry take a look at the baseball and couldn't help but wonder how precise this game of baseball is getting.
- 42:26Now we're playing in a National League Park so the Yankees had about a dozen and a half baseball that they used in batting practice.
- 42:34National League balls. A pitcher warmed up with a National League ball. They got special mud that the umpires used to rub up the baseballs.
- 42:42When we switch over to the Yankee Stadium it'll be American League baseballs that'll be used.
- 42:47Both supposed to be the same although hardly wins. Either one of them you can find dual cooperators in them.
- 42:53Here's Claytus Boyer to lead off. He swings and pops it up outside of first. McCovey chasing it but it's gonna drip back into the crowd.
- 43:02One strike to Boyer. Claytus had a home run out here yesterday that broke a 2-2 tie.
- 43:08George you're playing baseball down in Swift in Arkansas that they have an umpire used special mud to rub up the baseballs.
- 43:14Yes they did Joe. Yes we played at Big League all the way. We wrapped our baseballs with tape. Painted them white.
- 43:22Jack Sanford gets ready. Here's the pitch to Boyer. Another foul ball over near the dugout. McCovey is chasing it but this one's going back in the crowd.
- 43:31A two strike count to Boyer. It'll be Boyer leading off. Terry to follow and then Tony Q-Back.
- 43:47Sanford getting a new baseball from Charlie Berry looking in. Here's the pitch to Claytus. Outside.
- 43:57Just off the corner and Howard thought he had a strike. He was ready to throw it down to Davenport at third base. One ball two strikes.
- 44:06The Giants won. The Yankees nothing. We're in the top of the third inning.
- 44:15Sanford a rather chunky bill right under. It's all strong. Here's the one two pitch. Outside again. That was a hard slider just off the corner.
- 44:26A ball two and a strike two count.
- 44:34Giants play Boyer pretty much straight away. Deep in left field. Jack into the wind up. Here's the two two pitch.
- 44:42Here's a foul ball hit the right center field. Willie May chasing it. He's got it on the run.
- 44:51A plate for you Howard. A foul to Willie May. Right center field.
- 44:59I'm going to bring up the pitcher Ralph Terry.
- 45:02Goods is you and I both well know there are a lot of telltale signs that ball players have when they're going to do certain things.
- 45:09But I don't think there's one that's more obvious than when Willie May's is going to catch the ball. Every time he taps that glove it's almost like turning on the radar.
- 45:15He's telling you boys I got the beat on it. Forget about it.
- 45:19Here's the one for it. Into the wind up. Here's the pitch to Terry. A swing and a miss on a fastball.
- 45:24I couldn't help but watch the Giants down in Los Angeles the other day Joe. The last out of the ball game you remember was the fly ball to May's and center.
- 45:31And they were out of the dugout halfway to the pitcher's mound before he caught the ball. I don't think they believed he could drop one.
- 45:37There's a swing and a foul back on the screen. Two strikes.
- 45:40I finished up with the Giants in 54 and came down the stretch with them and it got funny. Derotia was then the manager.
- 45:46The foul ball that was hit he now let Willie get it. It'd be a foul ball in the reserve seat section along the third baseline. He won Willie to get it.
- 45:53Ralph Terry the batter with a strike two count.
- 45:58Sanford ready. Here's the one outside. This one off the corner. One ball two strikes.
- 46:05Terry batting with one out and no one on here on the top of the third inning. The Giants won. The Yankees nothing.
- 46:16Terry right down on the end of the bat. Waiting on Jack Sanford.
- 46:21Here's the one two pitch. He swings and misses. Terry strikes off.
- 46:27That's two away. It'll bring up Tony Cuback.
- 46:31Tony's over one in this game. He bounced to the second baseman Hiller back in the first inning.
- 46:39Kubek said that the ball Willie Mays hit yesterday that seemed to dip away from that right hit ball. Kubek said it was the hardest hit ball he'd ever had hit at him.
- 46:49Boy it was a good thing it's scooted by him too Jill and not right at him.
- 46:53Here's a pitch to Kubek. He swings and hits a high fly ball into Chalice center field. Here's Mayes coming on calling for it.
- 47:00He's got it besides his time. Cubak out on a fly to center.
- 47:05No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left. Then the score at the end of the first half of third inning.
- 47:10The Giants won. The Yankees nothing. Well Johnny Blanchard is a pitch hitter deluxe for this ball club.
- 47:16The Yankees and Johnny handles himself pretty well in the interview too. Here he is on a tape with Mel Allen.
- 47:21John how about that new Gillette Slim adjustable.
- 47:24Mix shaving even easier doesn't it? It's a dream to handle and when you put in a super blue blade, man you've got comfort you never thought possible.
- 47:32Well those amazing super blue blade edges they're exclusive with Gillette are a real scientific breakthrough.
- 47:40Actually mirror finish so keen and smooth they glide through the toughest beard like it was nothing at all.
- 47:46You get refreshing shapes, clean quick shapes that are all but beyond describing.
- 47:51Try super blues in the new Gillette Slim adjustable razor.
- 47:55It's lighter for easier handling, slimmer, trimmer and great for those awkward shaving areas.
- 48:00You get both razor and blades along with a 79 cent can of foamy instant lather in the Gillette World Series Special.
- 48:08Now it's a $229 value and it's yours right now for only $1.95.
- 48:14Let's pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 48:18This is WKY's Connected Aid. If you're beverage only half satisfying then ask yourself this question.
- 48:25Are you mixing with the best?
- 48:28Saratoga fishy with the yellow label. It also draws the red.
- 48:34The genuine fishy with the yellow label.
- 48:37Tastes better tonight.
- 48:40Feel better tomorrow.
- 48:43Saratoga with the yellow label.
- 48:48He swings and hits the five ball to center field.
- 48:51Becky Madel moves back and he's got it.
- 48:53But God hit the ball hard right straight to Madel in center field.
- 48:58That's one away and the batter will be the pitcher Jack Sanford.
- 49:03And a bad hitting pitcher, George. He can swing that bat. He loves to hit and he takes his cuts up there.
- 49:10Big round of applause for Sanford if he comes on here in the bottom of the third inning.
- 49:15Jack has blanked the Yankees without a hit through the first three innings.
- 49:19There's been one hit in this ball game. That was a lead off double by Hiller.
- 49:25Here's the pitch. Ball outside he got the fast ball off the corner. One ball in a strike.
- 49:32Hiller doubled and scored the only run of the ball game back in the first inning.
- 49:39Terry gets ready. Here's the one and oh pitch. He swings and misses.
- 49:43Fast ball around the letter. One ball, one strike.
- 49:47We're in the bottom of the third. One out with no one on. The Giants won. The Yankees nothing.
- 49:52Second game of the 1962 World Series.
- 49:58Here's the one, one pitch. He swings and misses. He got the curve ball by one ball, two strikes.
- 50:04That's the great equalizer when that pitch is those you have to challenge, that good breaking curve ball.
- 50:10I thought that was against the rules Joe.
- 50:13As pitchers keep telling each other, you don't throw me any, I won't throw you any, but they lie.
- 50:17The pitch to Sanford is in there. He's called out on strikes.
- 50:20Terry got the fast ball over the inside corner and Jack Sanford wants to go back.
- 50:28Strikeout number two for Ralph Terry. There's two down and the batter will be Chuck Hiller, the second baseman.
- 50:36John Stratt had a double to right field in the first inning. Roger Menace made the catch, but he was stumbling
- 50:41and as Joe said, he probably bounced it out with his knee.
- 50:45Hank Soar was right on top of it and made the call.
- 50:49Tell him, left handed batter. Here's the pitch. Ball down low, one ball and a strike.
- 50:59In that play yesterday, George, Marys' ball and Al Lou got his hands on.
- 51:04Willie Mays explained that he had that ball until he came down and his elbow hit the fence.
- 51:08At the top of the fence?
- 51:10What a play. A one and a pitch. Down low, another curve breaking below the knees.
- 51:15A ball too and a no strike count.
- 51:19Hiller checking with Whitey Lachman, the coach of third base to see if the get sign is on for this two and a pitch.
- 51:25West Westrom is coaching at first base for the Giants.
- 51:32Terry into the windup delivers, inside, that's Ball to push him back.
- 51:38Wonder what ball players do before the game? West Westrom and Yogi Berra were checking nubs who had the most nubs as far as catches.
- 51:45They put those two hands out there and they would have shook hands if they could take ten minutes to get them apart, George.
- 51:51Here's the three and out pitch, Taylor. Strike the fastball right down the middle. Chuck was taking all the way on this one.
- 51:58A ball, three and a strike, one count.
- 52:03Ralph Terry going for his first World Series win.
- 52:07Delivers strike two, another fastball.
- 52:10Hiller had started the first base. Charlie Berry went up to the right hand.
- 52:15So it's a full count of the young second baseman.
- 52:20Chokes the bat for the three, two pitch.
- 52:27Terry getting ready? Here it is. He swings and lines it foul down the left field line.
- 52:32This one going back in the crowd, still free in two.
- 52:40Yankee's playing pretty much straight away. Marist pulled a little bit to right field.
- 52:48Boy, you're wide of the bag at third base. Long, deep and near the line at first.
- 52:56A three, two pitch. He swings and pops it foul. This one's going out of play over behind the Yankee dugout.
- 53:02The wind is such a factor here that even it's unusual. You'll go into a road game watching these giants play on the road
- 53:10and you'll see a player. Hiller straight away, they come here and they'll shade them because that wind grabs it
- 53:15and it'll blow it towards the right field corner. Hiller uses a big thick handle bat, a potato matcher type.
- 53:21Here's the pitch. Ball, it's a pass. Scott Hiller draws a face on long as Terry gets the fast ball around the middle of his cap.
- 53:30It's a first walk given up by Terry. It's a runner at first base with two outs and the batter will be Philippe Alou.
- 53:40Alou was out on a sacrifice run his first time at bat. With Hiller at second base, he pushed a butt to the first baseman day along.
- 53:50Philippe are right handed batter. Here's the first pitch. Ball, a tie. Check this swing in town. One ball on the strike.
- 54:01This is a tough ballpark for right handed batters as the wind continuously blows from left field across to the right field corner
- 54:12unless of course you have good power in the right center field.
- 54:16Here's a quick throw to first base. Hiller gets back in town. Terry gets the one and oh pitch. He swings and misses.
- 54:27Fast ball at the belt. One ball, one strike. Madel and Thresh are extremely deep for Alou.
- 54:38Marist back a couple of steps in right field. Here's the one, one pitch. Curve ball, it's in there right at the letter. One ball, two strikes.
- 54:55Alou had one hit in yesterday's game. That was a lying single to left field.
- 55:02He's waiting on Ralph Terry. Hiller leads off at first base. Terry makes a quick throw to first, chuck back in town.
- 55:12One ball and two strikes. Here's the pitch. A high pop fly over near the Yankee dugout. Here's Boyer coming over. He has the room.
- 55:21Thanks for catching the side retired. Alou fouls to the third baseman. No runs, no hits, no errors. One man left and the score at the end of three pointings of play.
- 55:32A Giants one, the Yankees nothing. Alou made a couple of great plays here yesterday and here's Phillip right now with Russ Hodges in the clubhouse locker.
- 55:41You're a Gillette man, Phillip. That must include Super Blue Blades too. Hold away, Russ. They give me such comfortable, refreshing shape I can hardly believe it.
- 55:51Well, that's the way millions upon millions of people feel about easy shaving Gillette Super Blue Blades. You can't even approach them for comfort.
- 55:58Now they're the result of an engineering process exclusive with Gillette that gives them mirror smooth edges. So keen they shave off the toughest beard as if there were nothing.
- 56:08They're double edge too for added convenience and extra savings. You get more shades for blade. Now's the time to try them with Gillette's streamlined easy handling slim adjustable.
- 56:18A longer liner version of the country's most popular razor. You get both razor and blade from the Gillette World Series Special along with a 79 cent can of Gillette foamy instant lather for only $1.95.
- 56:32That's a 229 value. So you save 34 cents.
- 56:39You know, ball players watch the other ball club during batting practice. Yesterday, Harvey Keane said he was watching why did Ford warm up and he saw Ford give a sign for a slider and wondered when and where would he come up with that.
- 56:49In fact, Harvey said that Ford was much quicker yesterday than he'd ever seen. And today Bobby Richardson was really bearing down in that batting practice, putting the ball here and there.
- 57:01It could be as Bobby's got some ideas and maybe start something by just dropping a button, taking off.
- 57:07Well, here's Bobby to lead off in the fourth inning for the Yankees. Takes one down low, one ball and a strikes.
- 57:13Bobby bounced to the shortstop his first time at bat. It's a one to nothing ball game here in the top of the fourth. The Giants are out in front.
- 57:22Sanford delivers strike the fastball in the knees. One in one to Richardson. You'll be followed by Tom Trish and then Mickey Mantle.
- 57:35Sanford against Terry here today in the second game of the 62 World Series. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 57:42He swings and hits a hard ground at a shot for God. How's it? The quick throw at first he's out. A good play by Jose for God.
- 57:51Richardson slammed that one hard to the right of for God who took two quick steps, came up with a ball and then had to make a quick throw to McCovey in time to get Bobby by a step.
- 58:02That's one away and the batter will be Tom Trish.
- 58:09Tommy drew a walk his first time at batting. Batting left handed against Sanford.
- 58:17Jack delivers strike to get the curve ball over. A one strike down.
- 58:25We've seen some great pitching in this series. Whitey Ford turned in a tremendous job here yesterday. Billy O'Dell was a fine pitcher for the Giants.
- 58:33Today it's Sanford and Terry. Here's the pitch. Cubak bounces up in the air. Sanford's calling for it and he...
- 58:41Oh! Tommy Trish putted the ball up in the air. Sanford for God and Davenport all went for it. Any one of them that have made the play, Sanford got his ground on it and he dropped it.
- 58:56You'll have to wait for a ruling on that, Joe. As funny as this might sound, it looked like the sun and maybe even the wind because Sanford had his back turned as he tried to make the play and the crowd reacts now, George,
- 59:10as the hit sign is played, it'll be a bunch single for Tommy Trish.
- 59:16Once the runner in first place, one man out and the batter will be Mickey Mantle.
- 59:25Mickey popped to the shot stop his first time at bat. He's batting left handed against the right-hander. That's the first hit off Sanford.
- 59:39Jack comes to a set position. The pitch to Mickey. Ball down low. One ball and a strike.
- 59:47Sanford did not realize it but both Pagan and Davenport were standing right behind him. Either one could have made the play.
- 59:55He stuck his glove right up and tipped the ball just knocking it to the ground out of the reach of Pagan.
- 1:00:04So Trish at first place, one out. Here's the pitch to Mantle. This one up high. A ball two and a no strike count.
- 1:00:15I'm holler walking out in front of the plate with a few words of advice to Sanford.
- 1:00:25Jack taking a little time right now. He has not been in a jam in this ball game. He has walked a couple of batters and has given up a single.
- 1:00:34And every time he's had a man on first base, he has slowed his pitching pace. Being a little more careful. Here's the pitch.
- 1:00:41Strike, he helped the corner with a fast ball.
- 1:00:44There was a difference right there. Two nothing against Mantle. He kind of surveys the situation, George.
- 1:00:51He doesn't grab that ball as he used to and just pump. He kind of thinks it out and then goes to work.
- 1:00:56Mickey was looking for something probably on the inside part of the plate he could pull and Sanford threaded the needle outside.
- 1:01:03Here it is again. A pop fly that's going to be out of play. This one drifting back into the crowd behind third base.
- 1:01:10Almond Tark goes into about a 30 minute speech when you get talking about Sanford about how he doesn't give in to the hitter.
- 1:01:17He wants a pitcher hitter a certain way. That's the way he's going to do it regardless of the situation.
- 1:01:21And of course that's what you want your pitcher to do. Throw the ball that he has the most confidence in.
- 1:01:25You don't want to be a hope pitcher. Hope he gets it over and hope the fellow hits it and hope somebody catches it.
- 1:01:31Mickey Mantle standing in with a ball too and a strike two count.
- 1:01:35Tom Trash at first base with one out.
- 1:01:39Sanford still looking in. He gets ready.
- 1:01:42Here's the two-two pitch. Mickey swings and pops it up outside of third base.
- 1:01:46Here's Davenport coming over. He's got the room. Makes the catch.
- 1:01:50Mickey Mantle fouls to the third baseman Jim Davenport.
- 1:01:56That's two down and the batter will be Roger Maris.
- 1:02:01Roger do a walk his first time at bat. He goes back in the second inning.
- 1:02:07Now once again the Giants are going into the ship. Chuck Miller going over into the hole between first and second
- 1:02:14and the shortstop again moving over to the second base side.
- 1:02:21The Giants have three infielders on the right side. Only Davenport left on the third base side.
- 1:02:26The Vick Stomeris spiked the pass ball over the outside part of the plate.
- 1:02:31A one strike down.
- 1:02:34It's a one to nothing ball game. We're in the top of the fourth inning. The Giants are out in front.
- 1:02:42Sanford looking into Haller now.
- 1:02:48Wanting him to start the signs over again.
- 1:02:52The pitch to Maris. Outside. Just off the corner. One ball, one strike.
- 1:02:58When they over shift like that they're daring you to hit the ball.
- 1:03:02These Giants are really going even one step further as they're just keeping the ball outside
- 1:03:06to where if Roger would want to just go that way it's a case of putting that bat on the ball.
- 1:03:11They're certainly willing to give up that single. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:03:15Way outside with this one. Haller has to come out from behind the plate to get it.
- 1:03:19A ball too and a strike one count.
- 1:03:22While the Giants thinking here Joe more than likely a single they've got to have two hits to score
- 1:03:26and with one swing of the bat Maris could pump one out of here and so they're daring him to hit the ball to left field.
- 1:03:40Roger standing in waiting on Sanford.
- 1:03:44Jack seems to be having a little trouble with the signs. Could be that he's just wanting to make Maris wait.
- 1:03:53Here's the two-one pitch. Curve ball. It's in there. That was a good one.
- 1:03:57Fast curve ball in around the knee and it's a ball too and a strike two count.
- 1:04:04Maris was not ready for that one. If I keep mine I've been looking for the fast ball.
- 1:04:10Sanford coming in with a beautiful curve.
- 1:04:15Jack checks his runner. Here's the two-two pitch. That goes the runner.
- 1:04:20Here's the throw down to second base. He is safe at second base.
- 1:04:24The pitch was outside to Roger Maris and Tommy Tresch at the stolen base.
- 1:04:31Well the Yankees have the tying run. It's second. Two down and a full count to Maris.
- 1:04:39You're daring right now George with the tying run. It's going position and he's still have overshipped it.
- 1:04:44The ground ball to the shortstop sign will sneak through a daring maneuver.
- 1:04:48Here's the pitch to Maris. He swings and pucks it up behind the plate. Here's Howard coming back.
- 1:04:54He might have a room he does and he makes the catch.
- 1:04:58Howard for the catcher. Howard.
- 1:05:02No runs on one hit. There were no errors. One man left and the score at the end of the first half to fourth inning.
- 1:05:09The Giants won. The Yankees nothing. Well Jim Bouton is down in the Yankee bullpen and he'll probably be in before this series is over.
- 1:05:17Jim always gives you a straight answer. Like this one he gave Mel all in the other day.
- 1:05:21Say Jim had a chance to try out the new Gillette Slim adjustable razor yet?
- 1:05:25Just today Mel and I'll tell you I really noticed the difference. That slimmer head makes it a cinch to shave those tricky spots.
- 1:05:32Well Jim's right and here's more about this streamlined new Gillette Slim adjustable.
- 1:05:37It's lighter, longer for better balance and it has Gillette's precision dial with nine different settings.
- 1:05:43The lower numbers are for lighter beers. The higher numbers for heavier beers.
- 1:05:47With the Slim is a dispenser of remarkable Gillette's super blue blades that have brought a new experience in shaving comfort to millions upon millions of people everywhere.
- 1:05:56And small wonder. Our super blue edges are made by a special process that is Gillette's alone.
- 1:06:03Right now on the World Series Special you get both the razor and blades with a 79 cent can of Gillette foamy instant leather.
- 1:06:11All for only $1.95. It's a $2.29 value so you save 34 cents.
- 1:06:18You know when you always shift on a thaw, a Williams or a Marist, a Rich Rollins,
- 1:06:24you would think it's a simple thing to just put your bat on a ball and go the opposite way and get that basic but it's not that simple.
- 1:06:31And there's one other factor to be considered. That if a fellow is hitting a ball good by hitting normally and naturally,
- 1:06:37he doesn't want to get out of kilter and get out of the groove by trying to go the other way.
- 1:06:41It's not a case of being full headed or hard headed or anything else.
- 1:06:44You want to hit the way you think is best for you and if you're in a groove hitting real good, you know you're in that groove.
- 1:06:50And maybe by going to the opposite field you'll just take yourself out of the groove and that's always a danger mark.
- 1:06:56Here's Matty Alloud, the leadoff for the Giants in the fourth inning.
- 1:07:00He'll be followed by Willie Mays and Willie McCuddy.
- 1:07:03He bats down the first baseline, long has it, steps on the bag.
- 1:07:06Matty butting the ball too hard, a low liner, one hop right straight the day along who fielded the ball near the bag,
- 1:07:13stepped on first base.
- 1:07:15So there's one away and Willie Mays steps in.
- 1:07:17Willie Mays!
- 1:07:21Willie was a spike out victim, his first time at bat.
- 1:07:24Terry got him on a curve ball on the three two-bits.
- 1:07:27Judge, I came up and tell this story.
- 1:07:29I was scheduled to do an interview with Willie on the NBC network after the ball game and Willie asked out
- 1:07:35the reason for asking out is that he had a visit to children's hospital.
- 1:07:39A young boy had written him and said, I saved my money to come to the game but I can't get there.
- 1:07:43Please hit a home run for me so that young boy couldn't get there.
- 1:07:46Willie went to the hospital.
- 1:07:48That's tremendous Joe, tremendous.
- 1:07:50Here's Willie, a right-handed batter.
- 1:07:52Terry delivers a high-flavol in the Scholar Center field.
- 1:07:56Richardson going out, Mantle coming in and Richardson makes the catch.
- 1:08:00Bobby was having a little trouble with a high sky on this one.
- 1:08:04But he stayed with it.
- 1:08:06So two pitches, two outs and here's Willie McCovey.
- 1:08:12Willie's over one, bounce the day along his first time at batting.
- 1:08:22Ball left-handed batter.
- 1:08:24McCovey batting with two outs, no one on in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:08:28The Giants won the Yankees nothing in this ball game.
- 1:08:31Terry delivers, strike, he got the curve ball over.
- 1:08:36A one strike out.
- 1:08:38They are really playing him deep.
- 1:08:40Richardson in second base is on the grass, long guards aligned,
- 1:08:43Mantle's way over and right center, Maris is deep.
- 1:08:46Here's the pitch.
- 1:08:48Ball, no fits of strikes as Charlie Berry foul tipped it.
- 1:08:51Willie checked his swing, the ball hit his bat, foul tipped back.
- 1:08:54A strike two out.
- 1:08:56Mantle is so deep we can hardly find him in the crowd out there Joe.
- 1:09:01George this McCovey I tell you, he's one of the, he's real loose jointed guys.
- 1:09:05Look how he's put together with bailing wire and your figure's going to fall apart any minute.
- 1:09:08But when that ball gets about two feet in front of him and when he's got that batter's hand,
- 1:09:12he flies open like a brand new Winni shade.
- 1:09:16He's standing in with a strike two out.
- 1:09:20Terry looking in.
- 1:09:22Here's the pitch to Willie.
- 1:09:24Another foul ball once again, he checked his swing, the ball hit his bat.
- 1:09:29Thank you, seem to be keeping the ball up high to McCovey Joe.
- 1:09:32Keeping it in too, keeping it up and in.
- 1:09:36Say he's got some strike zone.
- 1:09:38The rest of it is six foot four, but I would imagine from behind that plate he's got to look like he's about nine feet nine.
- 1:09:45I always kidding, I say Willie they shouldn't put a number on the back of the uniform,
- 1:09:48we should put a license plate there and now nobody passed you on the right.
- 1:09:54He's standing in with a strike two count.
- 1:09:57Terry getting ready.
- 1:10:00Working a little slower right now than he did in the early part of the ball game.
- 1:10:04Delivers, outside a fast ball off the corner.
- 1:10:08One ball, two strikes.
- 1:10:11Maddie Lou went out on the first pitch today along, Willie Mays,
- 1:10:15popped up the second pitch to Bobby Richardson.
- 1:10:18Now it's one ball, two strikes to Willie McCovey.
- 1:10:22Willie right down on the end of the bat.
- 1:10:25Terry delivers a slow curve, it's down low, he checked his swing.
- 1:10:29Leaving the count at two and two.
- 1:10:31The pitch was close and Terry thought he had him.
- 1:10:34Charlie Berry shaking his head after Terry saying that McCovey did not swing.
- 1:10:50Ralph goes into the lineup, the two two bench, he swings the misses through the fast ball by him
- 1:10:56and McCovey goes down and swings.
- 1:10:58Now runs no hits, no errors, no one left and the score at the end of four,
- 1:11:02the Giants won, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:11:05Well now's the perfect time to try the new Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor.
- 1:11:09Now this is an adjustable razor with nine different blade settings.
- 1:11:13One that's just right for your skin and beard.
- 1:11:15It's streamlined too, lighter, longer with a slimmer head for those tricky hard to reach shaving areas.
- 1:11:21On the Gillette World Series Special you get the Slim,
- 1:11:25complete with a dispenser of the smooth and easy shaving Gillette Super Blue Blades.
- 1:11:29Razor's 79 cent can of foamy instant leather, all for only $1.95.
- 1:11:35Now it's a 229 value so you save 34 cents.
- 1:11:39Now while we're waiting here let's pause 30 seconds for our station identification.
- 1:11:45You know it takes a special something extra to be a Major League Ball Player
- 1:11:49or anything else that rates as the very best.
- 1:11:51Now take Saratoga Vichy for instance.
- 1:11:53Saratoga's naturally good, naturally lively spring fresh flavor
- 1:11:57adds that extra snap and extra sparkle to every drink.
- 1:12:00In fact Saratoga Vichy has such extra tantalizing flavor, it's delicious all by itself.
- 1:12:06Next time you get that great big thirst enjoy the extra satisfaction you get only from Saratoga Vichy with the YAL label.
- 1:12:14This is WDGY's Connected E.
- 1:12:16Yogi Berra will lead off of the Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 1:12:19A one-minute-in-one game, San Francisco out in front of New York.
- 1:12:24Berra, Long and Boyer will be the first three batters for the Yankees.
- 1:12:29Yogi hit into a double play back in the second inning.
- 1:12:34Sanford delivers, ball down low, one ball in a strike.
- 1:12:47Yogi a left-handed batter.
- 1:12:49Little fellow right down on the end of the bat, the Vich outside a fast ball off the corner.
- 1:12:55It's ball two in those strikes.
- 1:12:59The only run of this ball game scored in the first inning.
- 1:13:02Chuck Hiller double to right, moved to third on a punt, scored on a ground ball to the second baseman.
- 1:13:08The Vichy Yogi, strike, he got the corner.
- 1:13:13Sanford has been very effective here today on the two at Oak Ridge, getting that outside corner instead of coming in with a good one, Joe.
- 1:13:20Can almost hear what Yogi is saying to Charlie Berry, so how am I going to call it on me, but call him when I'm catching two.
- 1:13:28Sanford into the windup, delivers.
- 1:13:31There's a high five ball down the left field line, for God is chasing it.
- 1:13:35A lose there and a lose, got to make the catch, he does.
- 1:13:39Yogi there, pops one up down the left field line, Maddie Allure racing in to make the catch.
- 1:13:46That's one away, and the batter will be day alone.
- 1:13:52There's the attendance here today, 43,910.
- 1:13:5743,910.
- 1:14:05Long was a strikeout victim this first time at bat, and he swings and misses on a last ball, one strike.
- 1:14:14We're at the top of the fifth inning, one out with no one on, the Giants won the Yankees nothing.
- 1:14:21Jack Sanford and Ralph Terry, a couple of right-enders here today.
- 1:14:27The scene of the action will shift to Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday for the third game of the series.
- 1:14:32Tomorrow will be an off-day, as everybody will be traveling east.
- 1:14:37Here's the pitch, inside he pushed him back, one ball, one strike.
- 1:14:44The Yankees will work out tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in the morning at 11 o'clock, and the Giants will work out in the afternoon.
- 1:14:57Day-along waiting on Sanford. Jack taking a little time.
- 1:15:02Ian Haller seemed to have a little trouble getting the signs together. Here's the one run pitch.
- 1:15:09He swings and pops it up, maybe out of play. Here's Haller coming back to the Yankee dugout.
- 1:15:14He's there, and he's got it right for Rayleigh.
- 1:15:18Tom Haller racing to the dugout, made the catching pass into the Rayleigh.
- 1:15:23The wind is a big factor on a pop foul that's hit towards the third baseline.
- 1:15:28You don't see Haller, any of the Giants, hesitate when that ball is hit near the dugout.
- 1:15:34They take off because it'll blow right back in.
- 1:15:37It looked like it was about six rows back in the seats at one time.
- 1:15:42But Haller, knowing this ballpark, stayed with it, made the catch.
- 1:15:46The batter is Cleat Boyer, the third baseman. Cleat fly to center field, his first time at bat.
- 1:15:52Sanford into the windup, delivers. Here's a land ride to left field, a solid single for Cleat Boyer.
- 1:16:01Put a runner at first base with two outs, and the batter will be Ralph Terry.
- 1:16:08It's a big base hit for the Yankees, and brings Terry to the plate here in the fifth inning,
- 1:16:13instead of the leadoff man in the sixth inning.
- 1:16:18It's hit number two for the Yankees. The Giants have but one headoff, Terry.
- 1:16:23Now, a double by Hiller in the first inning that led to the only run of the ballgame.
- 1:16:29Sanford wants a new baseball. He tosses this one in, and Charlie Berry comes out with a new one.
- 1:16:37Terry was a strikeout victim his first time at bat.
- 1:16:42Ralph was telling me before the ballgame today he was going to punch a single either through the middle or in the right field, Joe.
- 1:16:47So we'll be watching him here. He has a big hole between first and second.
- 1:16:52Sanford delivers. Here's a ground ball to the shortstop. Pagan has it the long throw to first base. He's out.
- 1:16:58Terry goes out, short to first.
- 1:17:01No runs on one hit, so it'll have us one man left, and the score at the end of the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:07The Giants won, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:17:10The first half of today's game has been brought to you by the Gillette Safety Racer Company.
- 1:17:15And the second half of today's game is brought to you by the Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:17:20Your car, sir. Thank you.

- 1:17:44And New Yorker is as handsome inside as out.
- 1:17:48Old-shape steering wheels are color key to match nine different interior trim combinations.
- 1:17:53Chrysler New Yorker, a big, beautiful step ahead.
- 1:17:57It's the best engineered and best built car in Chrysler history.
- 1:18:01Your dealer invites you to visit this car.
- 1:18:03Chrysler 63, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:18:07Work quality engineered into every car.
- 1:18:21While we move along into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Giants have one run on one hit and no errors.
- 1:18:27The Yankees have no runs on two hits and they have no errors.
- 1:18:32The catcher, Tom Holler, will lead it off.
- 1:18:34He'll be followed by Jim Davenport and then the charge stop Jose Pagani.
- 1:18:41Nice round of applause for Holler as he steps in.
- 1:18:45The fine catch that he made on the pop fly near the Yankee dugout.
- 1:18:51Holler, a left-handed batter, he bounced to the second baseman his first time at bat.
- 1:18:56Here's Terry's first pitch. Curveball, it's in there. One strike.
- 1:19:03Holler didn't like to call on that one too much. He turns, says something to Barry.
- 1:19:07It was a short conversation.
- 1:19:11Here's the one strike pitch. Another curveball. He fouls it back to the screen.
- 1:19:16It was a slow curve. Ralph pulled a string on him. Tom was out in front and he bounced it foul.
- 1:19:21You can see where this Terry would be tough after throwing you a couple slow curveballs when he turns that fastball loose
- 1:19:26because he's got a real good fastball and it just gets by you before you realize what's really happening.
- 1:19:32Ralph into the windup. The two strike pitch. A high foul ball outside a third.
- 1:19:37Here's Boyer coming over. That's plenty of room. He's got it. There's one away.
- 1:19:41For the sun and the high sky. Give me Zenfielder. There's a lot of trouble here today.
- 1:19:46Tom Holler fouls the third base. One down and the batter will beat Jim Davenport, the third baseman.
- 1:19:55Davenport lined the ball hard to Bobby Richardson his first time at that.
- 1:20:06Well, you can hear the rhythmic applause from the giant fans here at Camelistic Park.
- 1:20:11They want the giants to get something going. Here's a curve-up. One ball of strength.
- 1:20:21One out with no one on. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning. The giants in front, one to nothing.
- 1:20:26Terry delivers a curve and it's in there. Slow curve ball over the heart of the plate.
- 1:20:32One ball, one strike.
- 1:20:37From Memphis pitching here this afternoon on both sides, there's a foul ball off the mask of Barra bouncing behind the plate.
- 1:20:45Two foul, two strikes. Holly Berry looking the base ball over before he tosses it back to Terry.
- 1:21:01Anki's pretty much straight away for Davenport. Not too deep in the outfield. Jim's more of a lion drive-getter.
- 1:21:10One to pitch. Curve down low. Scooped up by Barra. A ball too and a strike to count.
- 1:21:22And a pretty good breeze blowing right now from left field to right field.
- 1:21:26Curve ball hit on the ground foul down the third baseline. Why do you lockman fix it up? Still two and two to Davenport.
- 1:21:43Terry taking a little time as he waited on Davenport to get back in. Check to sign with Barra.
- 1:21:53Here's the do-do pitch. Curve ball he struck him out. Jim Davenport goes down swinging on a high curve ball.
- 1:22:00Strikeout number four for Ralph Terry. It's two down and the batter will be Jose Pagan.
- 1:22:08Terry's been tough for George. Only one fly ball in the outfield. That was hit by the very same Pagan who's coming up there now. Yesterday only three of them made out there.
- 1:22:24Pagan on a right-handed batter. He had three hits in yesterday's ball game. He hit the ball hard the first time up to today. Straight to the mound.
- 1:22:31Here's a strike. He got the curve ball over. A one strikeout. Slow fall has been the real surprise of both the playoff and the series.
- 1:22:40He's played great shortstop and he's chipped in with some big hits. Here's the one strike pitch. A curve I believe he hit him. He did.
- 1:22:50A curve ball that was not delivered hard hit him either on the shoulder or on the top of the helmet. He's all right. He's up and cutting down the first place.
- 1:23:01So Pagan on and first hit by a pitch ball with two outs and the batter will be Jack Sanford to pitcher.
- 1:23:09Jack at Pagan. George at Pagan all season long. He's been the type of guy who you really don't notice him except that he's always crossing home plate. That's when you really notice him.
- 1:23:22He gets on by beating out of the front. He gets a single. He'll play hit and run. The bombers get all the headlines but Pagan he'll be right in the middle of everything.
- 1:23:31Well he's at first base right now with two outs and time is called as Sanford steps out of the batter's box for a moment. Jack getting back in. Here's the pitch. Ball outside. One ball and a strike.
- 1:23:49This is a perfect spot for Pagan to be running except the pitcher is batting and the Giants would rather not have Sanford leading off in the sixth inning. Pagan being thrown out at second base. Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:02Foul ball was put back in the crowd. One ball, one strike. Another capacity house. Yesterday we had 43,852. Today we have 43,910.
- 1:24:23Jack Sanford chokes the bat. One ball, one strike. Terry delivers. Strike two. He cut the outside corner. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:24:35Sanford didn't like to call on that when he steps out with his hands on his hips looking around.
- 1:24:45We're in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Giants are leading one to nothing. They picked up a run in the first inning and that's been the only scoring in this ball game.
- 1:24:55Terry gets ready. Makes a quick throw to first. Jose back in town. Pagan is not taking a big lead right now. Here's the pitch. Curve ball he's talking about.
- 1:25:08Jack Sanford goes down swinging on the curve. Now runs no hits, no errors. One man left and the score at the end of five. The Giants won the Yankees nothing.

- 1:26:04Work quality, engine air, into every car.
- 1:26:12Well the Yankees will have the top of the batting order coming up here in the sixth inning. Tony Cuback will lead off and be followed by Bobby Richardson and Tom Trey.
- 1:26:25It's a one to nothing ball game. San Francisco out in front of New York.
- 1:26:32Cuback's all for two. They bounce to the second baseman in the first inning. Fly to center field. And the third.
- 1:26:39Tony, a left handed batter. Here's the first pitch. Ball outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:26:50Davenport is in close at third. Jim's a step or two in front of the bag on the edge of the infield grass. And McCovey is in a couple of steps from first base.
- 1:27:02Here's the one and oh pitch. Outside, way outside with this one. Ball two and no strikes.
- 1:27:09Giants in the outfield. Play Cuback pretty much straight away. A lube has moved in a few steps in the field.
- 1:27:16Maddie a lube, Philip a lube is in right field and Willie Mays in center field.
- 1:27:23Sanford ready. Here's the two and oh pitch. Right down the middle of the fastball. Cuback was taking all the way on this one.
- 1:27:30A ball two and a strike one down.
- 1:27:40Sanford has been behind a lot of batters two and oh but been right back with the next one. Here's the pitch.
- 1:27:47Strike two again. He threaded the needle on the outside corner with a fastball. Pits two into the Cuback.
- 1:27:54That has been Sanford's strong pitch all day. The fastball just getting the corner when he was behind the batters.
- 1:28:01Oh he's even the cap to Cuback. Tony Witte. Here it is. A swing and a miss. He's f**king out on a curveball.
- 1:28:10Tony Cuback goes down swinging. One away and the batter will be Bobby Richardson.
- 1:28:21Strikeout number three for Sanford.
- 1:28:26Richardson has bounced to the short staff both times to the plate. The last time he was out on a good play by Faghan.
- 1:28:35Sanford delivers outside a curve breaking down on the way. One ball no strikes.
- 1:28:42Bobby a little right handed batter. He keeps that third baseman right in on top of him. He's a good runner, a good base runner.
- 1:28:53Here's the one in oh pitch. He swings and sends a fly ball to center field. May is going back. Waiting he's down.
- 1:29:01Bobby Richardson out on a fly ball in the middle of May's in center field.
- 1:29:08He's two down and the batter will be Tom Trench.
- 1:29:12Well Tommy's had a perfect afternoon so far. He walked in the first inning and he singled in the fourth.
- 1:29:20He got the first hit off Sanford a pop fly butt and fell off the glove of Jack behind the mound.
- 1:29:31Here's the pitch. Upside corner with a strike. Charlie Berry going up with the right hand. One strike to Trench.
- 1:29:40Two outs with no one on. We're in the sixth inning. A one to nothing ball game. The giants in front.
- 1:29:47The pitch to Trench. He swings and misses. Tommy would try to get that one down the left field line with Davin Forte playing in close.
- 1:29:55Two strikes. He's been using a pretty set pattern Sanford has that fast ball outside and then really snapping off the curve ball,
- 1:30:02breaking it down into the left hand inner, trying to tie him up using the back kneecap for the target as far as the curve ball is concerned.
- 1:30:09He's had real good control of both pitches. Jack looking in to get the sign.
- 1:30:15Here's the two strike pitch. Outside and low. Fast ball down and away. One and two to Trench.
- 1:30:26Jack has walked two batters. He's been behind a lot of batters but he's been amazing with the two and no pitches today.
- 1:30:34Goes into the lineup. Here's the one to pitch. Outside of the swing. Two and two to Trench.
- 1:30:41That's about as far as he wants to go. He hadn't known him the curve ball yet. He was able to get long on a strikeout with the curve ball.
- 1:30:47He got two back in this inning with a curve ball and so far he is just going to two fast balls when he got way ahead of Trench.
- 1:30:54Now we're ready for the two to pitch. A second away. The third ball. He struck him out. The ball was in the dirt.
- 1:31:00Power has to throw down the first to McCovey to the Trench right. There are runs, no hits, no errors, no one left.
- 1:31:06And the score at the end of the first half of the sixth inning. The Giants won. The Yankees, nothing.
- 1:31:12Isn't that a new Chrysler? You're right. That is a beautiful car.
- 1:31:20Chrysler Newport. The crisp new custom look of Chrysler 63. Crisp and clean in its sweeping lines.
- 1:31:27In its long low hood. In its smooth unbroken surfaces. The large rear window has the custom look of a limousine.
- 1:31:34The interiors have the same feel of quality. Fabrics are made of 100% nylon work. Finals are saddle grain.
- 1:31:41It's hard to believe that all the luxury in the Chrysler Newport is only a step above the low price feel.
- 1:31:47Take the big beautiful step ahead at your Chrysler dealers now. Get the crisp new custom look of Chrysler 63.
- 1:31:55A product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:31:57Work quality, engineer, into every car.
- 1:32:11That was the bottom of the sixth inning here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 1:32:15The Giants are out in front of the Yankees by a score of 1 to nothing.
- 1:32:19The lone run in this ballgame coming back in the very first inning.
- 1:32:24Chuck Heller will lead it off for the Giants. He'll be followed by Philippe Alou and then Maddie Alou.
- 1:32:32The Yankees have no runs on two hits. They have no errors. And the Giants have one run on one hit.
- 1:32:39And no errors. One hit was a double from Chuck Heller leading off in the very first inning.
- 1:32:48And on the double, Maddie Heller has had the ball in his glove. It's an exceptional two-three catch.
- 1:32:54But in trying to hold his balance, he knocked it out and rolled away.
- 1:32:57And Heller raced in the second with a double. Chuck will have to have it better.
- 1:33:04Through a walk on his last trip.
- 1:33:07Harry delivers. There's a ground ball down the first face line. Long has it on the big rock.
- 1:33:12It's a tearing and plenty of time to get Heller. That's one away. And the batter will be Philippe Alou.
- 1:33:23Alou sacrificed in the first inning. And the third inning he fouled in the third baseman.
- 1:33:30Oh, he's out for one in this game, officially.
- 1:33:36Right-handed batter. Yankees shift around to left field. Ralph Terry delivers a turn of his land.
- 1:33:45And the batter is going to hold up and go back.
- 1:33:51As Maddow comes in with a strong throw. Alou went about halfway down the second.
- 1:33:57And made the turn in right-bats. Real funny defensive play by Mickey Mell keeping Philippe Alou at first base.
- 1:34:04He keeps a double play in order. Philippe Alou can really run.
- 1:34:07It looked like extra bases for him, but Mell cutting over a fine play.
- 1:34:13And he's in the overlooked play as far as defensive ability as the great knack of the outfield.
- 1:34:19He cut that ball off to keep a double play in order.
- 1:34:23There's Maddow Alou. He's over two in the game. He hits a high five ball in the right center field.
- 1:34:30Mickey Mell is cruising over. Camps under. He's got it in his two outs.
- 1:34:35Maddow Alou's swinging on the first pitch goes out on the flight of Mickey Mell.
- 1:34:40That's two down. And the batter is well-invaded.
- 1:34:43And you're under reaction.
- 1:34:54Willie struck out in the first inning. In the fourth inning, he hopped to the second baseman.
- 1:35:01Batting with a runner at first base. Two outs. We're in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:35:05Here's the pitch. He swings and bows his back. One strike to Maze.
- 1:35:12The Giants lead one to nothing. They pick up a run in the first inning.
- 1:35:16They get Serali even at two apiece.
- 1:35:23The Yogi taking a little time behind the plate. He takes the dirt away.
- 1:35:27There's something to Willie Maze before getting back.
- 1:35:33Terry gets that. Here's the pitch. Ball. It's down low. A curve breaking down and away.
- 1:35:39One ball. One strike.
- 1:35:43Killers started this inning with a ground ball to the first baseman.
- 1:35:46Alou, Philip Alou, then lined a single in the left center field. Maddow Alou.
- 1:35:51Center fly ball to Maddow in right center. Now it's one ball. One strike to Willie Maze.
- 1:36:01Willie right down on the end of the bat. Waiting on Ralph Terry. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:36:06There goes the runner. Here's a ground ball to the shortstop.
- 1:36:08You back has it to throw the first. He's out.
- 1:36:11Willie Maze will out the short to first. No runs on one hit to an o'er's.
- 1:36:16One man left on the score. At the end of sixth, the Giants won. The Yankees nothing.
- 1:36:20Have you heard about the automobile industry's first five-year or 50,000-mile warranty?
- 1:36:25Five years? 50,000 miles?
- 1:36:28That's right. It's the warranty now offered on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 1:36:33What does it cover?
- 1:36:34It covers the powertrain in your car. The expensive parts to repair or replace.
- 1:36:38Sounds terrific.
- 1:36:39It's the most significant warranty ever offered on an automobile.
- 1:36:42Your dealer will be glad to explain his new warranty, another first from Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:36:47Stay tuned for details later in this game.
- 1:36:50Let's pause here 30 seconds for our station identification.
- 1:37:02WGY's connected. It's amazing how a Major League team can snap back fast when it's down.
- 1:37:07When you're feeling down, you too can snap right back with a cold sparkling refresher.
- 1:37:12Saratoga Vichy, instant pick-me-up tang, so tantalizing as delicious all by itself.
- 1:37:17And Saratoga's naturally lightlier, spring fresh flavor, add zip life and sparkle to every mixed drink.
- 1:37:23So for that finger snapping, toe tapping, taste and feeling, be sure it's Saratoga Vichy with the yellow label.
- 1:37:33Mickey has just gasped, played on by Charlie Berry.
- 1:37:36Now we'll look at the baseball.
- 1:37:38He looked it over and said it was okay and we're ready to go.
- 1:37:43Mantle popped to the shortstop in the first inning.
- 1:37:46In the fourth inning, he fouled in the third baseman.
- 1:37:52Sanford has had Mantle reaching for the fastball outside and Mickey has been going out to get it and he's been popping it up.
- 1:37:59I'll see if he continues to pitch in that way, Joe.
- 1:38:03Here's the first bench.
- 1:38:04Fastball in tight, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:38:08Could have been a decoy just to push him back and then go outside again.
- 1:38:12There's always two schools of thought.
- 1:38:14One of them you keep pitching until a fellow proves that you can hit it.
- 1:38:17The other way is to think that he's looking for that particular pitch and go opposite.
- 1:38:22Sanford looking at it.
- 1:38:26He starts his wind up and then he stops.
- 1:38:29He's been using a lot of delaying tactics on the batter today to keep him waiting.
- 1:38:34Here's the one at O-Pitch.
- 1:38:35Inside again, he pushed him back once more with a fastball.
- 1:38:40A ball too and a no strike count.
- 1:38:49Three left-handed batters in a row to face Sanford here in the seventh inning.
- 1:38:54Here's the two at O-Pitch.
- 1:38:55Mickey swings and it's a bouncer to first base. McCovey has it here to flip to Sanford.
- 1:39:00He's out.
- 1:39:02Mickey Maddow found the ground ball to William McCovey at first base.
- 1:39:06Jack Sanford raced over to take it in front of Maddow.
- 1:39:12I'll bring up Roger Maris.
- 1:39:20Roger drew a walk in the second inning and the fourth inning he fouled at the catcher.
- 1:39:25And once again the shift goes on for Maris as Begann moves over on the second base side of the infield along with Hiller and McCovey.
- 1:39:35It would be almost impossible to hit a ground ball between McCovey and the first base line.
- 1:39:40It's only a step or so off the line and deep at first base.
- 1:39:44Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:46And the strike keeps off the corner. It's a fast ball over the outside part of the plate.
- 1:39:51One strike to Roger.
- 1:40:00Sanford into the wind-up. Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:03A ground ball hit to the second base but Hiller has it to flip to McCovey. He's out.
- 1:40:08Roger Maris goes out. Suck it to first.
- 1:40:11It's two down and the batter will be Yogi Vera.
- 1:40:18Yogi bounced into a double play in the second inning.
- 1:40:21In the fifth inning he was out on a short fly ball to left field.
- 1:40:28Adding now with two outs, no one on here in the top of the seven.
- 1:40:31Giant swan, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:40:41Sanford gets ready. Here's the first pitch.
- 1:40:44A swing on him. One strike to Vera.
- 1:40:49Of course Sanford and Howard both know that all these Yankee hitters going up there was one thing in mind.
- 1:40:53That's to try to tie it up with one swing and sometimes that works as a big advantage for you when you know what they're trying to do.
- 1:41:00Here's the one strike pitch.
- 1:41:03Outside trying to catch the corner. He missed with this one.
- 1:41:06One and one to Yogi.
- 1:41:11Each team with two hits as these two pitchers have been great here this afternoon.
- 1:41:19Yogi Vera waiting. One ball, one strike.
- 1:41:23Sanford delivers outside. Yogi checked his swing. Ball two and strike one.
- 1:41:30Yogi like Roberto Clemente in the National League.
- 1:41:33When you try to use the pitches set up another one or waste it, you may be in trouble because they'll just go out and rack it up for you.
- 1:41:41The strike zone as far as they're concerned is any ball thrown by the pitcher that stays in the park.
- 1:41:48It's a ball two and a strike one count to the Yogi man. Sanford into the wind up. Here it is.
- 1:41:55He swings the passes to the pass ball in around the knees.
- 1:41:58Leaving the count at two and two to Vera.
- 1:42:08Jack gets ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:42:11This one in the dirt. Scoots by the catcher all the way back to the screen.
- 1:42:15So it's three and two to Vera. See he was intent on bouncing that ball up there because just to repeat, sometimes you try to waste a pitch.
- 1:42:23You waste it to the extent you get it on the strike zone hoping it'll help your next delivery.
- 1:42:27It's fellas like Clemente or a Barrow. They'll widen the strike zone and it won't let you waste it.
- 1:42:32You'll find it when you get two strikes on them. You're the guy that's in the hole.
- 1:42:37There's a three two pitch to Yogi. Ball, it's a high walk.
- 1:42:42Vera draws a base on balls. We've got the fast ball around the middle of his cap.
- 1:42:48It's walk number three given up by Jack.
- 1:42:51It's a runner at first base with two men out and the batter will be Dale Long, the first baseman.
- 1:43:00Dale struck out in the second inning. In the fifth inning he fouled the catcher Tom Haller made a fine play on his foul fly near the Yankee dugout.
- 1:43:10Big tall left handed batter.
- 1:43:14Sanford checks his runner. Here's the pitch. Ball, a pass. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:43:22We're getting some action in the ball fin for the Yankees.
- 1:43:26Jim quotes, ball right-hander getting up and Bud Daley, a left-hander.
- 1:43:32Getting up to do some throwing.
- 1:43:37One ball and no strikes to Long. Sanford ready, the pitch, outside.
- 1:43:44A ball two and a no strike down.
- 1:43:52Sanford is trying to keep the fast ball on the outside part of the plate away from these big left-handed batters.
- 1:44:00Protecting a one run lead here in Candlestick Park. Here's the two and no pitch.
- 1:44:05Strike, he crossed the corner with this one. A ball two and a strike one count.
- 1:44:10He's not giving in to him, he's still on the outside corner. When you get ahead of that pitch and two balls and no strikes and three one and three oh, you can say to yourself, I want a particular pitch in a particular spot.
- 1:44:19It's not only looking for a fast ball, you can say to yourself, I want that low inside fast ball.
- 1:44:23All that was a strike, Long didn't think it was inside enough.
- 1:44:26Here's the pitch. Outside. This one just off the corner so it's three and one to Long.
- 1:44:34Checking with Crossetti to see if the hit sign is on.
- 1:44:37You come down that six, seven, eight and ninth inning, you get to that game situation and here it is where your pitcher has to make the pitch.
- 1:44:44It's a challenge right now because a one run lead, it's on its first base and it's a three one count and Sanford against Long.
- 1:44:51Jack gets that. Here's the three one pitch. He swings and pops it up behind the plate.
- 1:44:57Here is coming back. He's got the room on it and he makes it back.
- 1:45:04Dale Long fouls to the catcher. The reds go hits the rear as one man left and the score at the end of the first half of the seventh inning.
- 1:45:11A giant swine, the Yankee is nothing.
- 1:45:14Here are the details on the new five year or 50,000 mile warranty on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 1:45:21The Chrysler Motor Corporation dealers warranty against effects in material and workmanship covers the powertrain.
- 1:45:27This means that Chrysler will replace or repair for five years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, all these important parts.
- 1:45:35The engine block, head and internal parts, the transmission case and internal parts excluding the manual clutch, the torque converter, the drive shaft,
- 1:45:42the universal joints excluding dust covers, the rear axle and differential and rear wheel bearings provided the car has been serviced at reasonable intervals
- 1:45:50according to Chrysler certified car care schedules. Factory approved remanufactured parts may be used for replacement.
- 1:45:56As you know, these are the expensive parts to repair or replace and the warranty has a certificate for change of ownership.
- 1:46:03See your authorized Chrysler Corporation dealer and ask about his new five year or 50,000 mile warranty.
- 1:46:09Another first from Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:46:13It's the bottom of the seventh inning. The giants are out in front of the Yankees by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:46:20Willie McCabe will lead it off for San Francisco on the seventh inning.
- 1:46:24It will be followed by Tom Holler and then Jim Davenport.
- 1:46:29Action continues in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:46:33Ralph Carey is scheduled to be the second batter in the eighth inning and more than likely will have a pitch batter for him.
- 1:46:41Ralph Halk is getting a couple of pitchers loosened up in the bullpen.
- 1:46:46Here's McCabe, bounced to the first baseman in the second inning, stuck out in the fourth.
- 1:46:52There's McCabe.
- 1:47:01Each team with two hits, but the only run of the ballgame coming in the first inning for the giants.
- 1:47:07McCabe is a slow curve and he swings and misses. One strike.
- 1:47:12Johnny Blanchard has left the Yankee bullpen moving to the dugout and more than likely he'll be a pitch batter in the eighth inning.
- 1:47:21It's a one strike count to McCabe. Terry Redick, the pitch, fastball, he fouls it back.
- 1:47:28Almost into our radio booth.
- 1:47:32It's a strike two count to Willie. We're located almost directly behind home plate.
- 1:47:38A little bit off to the left on the third base side.
- 1:47:46Ralph Carey with a new baseball, rubbing it up.
- 1:47:49Willie McCabe standing in. He fell right down on the end of the bat.
- 1:47:56I think it's ready. Two strike pitch. There's a long run.
- 1:48:03This one is a home run for Willie McCabe.
- 1:48:23Willie McCabe had a towering ball in the deep right field.
- 1:48:28He only got about it at all.
- 1:48:30It was a fair foul.
- 1:48:32George and that's where they hit him when they come back with snow on him.
- 1:48:36You can get signals from him.
- 1:48:39Here's the catcher, Tom Heller. Terry delivers.
- 1:48:43Ball, it's outside. One ball and a strike.
- 1:48:46Have you ever seen a guy hit a ball so hard so easy?
- 1:48:49I went a mile, Joe. I lost it in orbit at one time.
- 1:48:53You hear now this and beep, beep, beep.
- 1:48:57There's a wanted out pitch. A ground ball that's foul up to the right.
- 1:49:01One ball, one strike.
- 1:49:03The giants are in front by a score of two to nothing.
- 1:49:13The crowd is still buzzing from this long home run of the bat of Willie McCabe.
- 1:49:19Boy, he hit it a mile.
- 1:49:21The pitch to Hallery swings and misses to get the fast ball by him.
- 1:49:24One ball, two strikes.
- 1:49:30That was hit number three for the giants. The Yankees have picked up two.
- 1:49:37The giant fans want more as you can hear the mythical applause.
- 1:49:41As they're cheering their heroes on here at Candle Six Fight.
- 1:49:45There's the one two-pitch.
- 1:49:47Slow curve hit on the ground, that is.
- 1:49:49There, hit the bat in first place, just coming out play-rate.
- 1:49:55They along with all set the field of all.
- 1:49:58It hit the bat, found it off to the right, and Haller has an in-field signal.
- 1:50:08The ball was not hit hard. They along a couple of steps behind the bag was all set to pick it up.
- 1:50:14Step on the bag and hit first base, found it to the right by the time they all ran it down.
- 1:50:19Too late to get Haller.
- 1:50:21Yogi out talking to Ralph Terry with Davenport up there.
- 1:50:24Davenport can handle that bat, so he gives Alvin Dach an option for his bunny-narr.
- 1:50:29Whether he just wants to play any straight hit and run,
- 1:50:31or stay away from the double play to get forgotten up there.
- 1:50:37There's Jim Davenport stepping in. He's lying to second base and struck out in two trips.
- 1:50:42A runner in first place with no one out here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:50:46The giants in front, two to nothing.
- 1:50:49Terry delivers. Ball down low.
- 1:50:52Davenport squared around. He's ready to bust.
- 1:50:55One ball, no strikes.
- 1:50:58He can handle that bat, and he's taking a real good look at Whitey Lockman who's going through the signs.
- 1:51:03Long talking to Ralph Terry. Long really tried it hard from first base.
- 1:51:08Haller, not a fast runner, but able to get an exceptionally big jump because Long is breaking in quickly.
- 1:51:15So you can expect something.
- 1:51:18There's a quick throw to first base.
- 1:51:21Power back at ten.
- 1:51:23I've got to bet he's switching off, George.
- 1:51:26Just a one and oh, bitch. There he goes.
- 1:51:28He's lying the ball down on the right field line. It is foul.
- 1:51:34You hit it right on the head, Joe. The hit and run was on.
- 1:51:37Haller was moving, and Davenport with good back control lying the ball down the right field line.
- 1:51:42Curving back into the crowd.
- 1:51:44That'll be a ball and a strike.
- 1:51:50He's got Long and Terry going over their sides again as far as a defensive alignment against Davenport.
- 1:51:56Davenport, Philippe Ballou, Fagin, they give Alvin Dark a chance to maneuver and Dark being that type of a ball player himself when he played.
- 1:52:03You could bun, hit, run, run and hit anything. You can't take anything for granted.
- 1:52:08Terry gets set.
- 1:52:10There's another throw to first base.
- 1:52:12Haller back in time.
- 1:52:14So two to nothing ball game. We're in the seventh inning.
- 1:52:17Here's the bit. Terry goes again. A ground ball down the third base. Line is foul this time.
- 1:52:22High hopper, that would have been a lot of trouble for Boyer. As it was yet high under the air.
- 1:52:28A lot of times as a catcher, you ask your pitcher to throw over the first base hoping that instinctively the hitter will make the move that will tip the hand.
- 1:52:35If he's going to front when he sees the pitcher throw to first base, the handle will slide up the bat handle.
- 1:52:39Terry threw over to first base a couple times, but Davenport gave no indication he would be bunning. Long laid back that time.
- 1:52:47Ready again. It's a one and two bit.
- 1:52:49He swings it, it's a bouncer to shortstop.
- 1:52:52Cubak, Bobby Cubak, the ball is right to second base.
- 1:53:03Bobby Cubak, Bobble the ground ball in his anxiety to get the double play.
- 1:53:08Then he picked it up and threw late through Bobby Richardson. So everybody's safe.
- 1:53:13He'll be in there, charged against Cubak. Gunners at first and second with no one out.
- 1:53:19And the batter will be Jose Pagod.
- 1:53:25Jose blinded the center field in the third inning. And the fifth inning he was hit by a pitch ball.
- 1:53:30That's how I was a good base runner. Good runner, so...
- 1:53:37The Yankees will be sharpening up here looking for the bun.
- 1:53:41They've been out of the bun for that base hit, George.
- 1:53:43He's one of those guys that can go for the base hit in a spot like this with the bun.
- 1:53:50Goal's long and Boyer in the play-in post. Terry delivers. Here's the bot down the third baseline.
- 1:53:56Boyer has it to throw to first base. He's out.
- 1:53:59Pagod with a good bot down the first baseline.
- 1:54:03Boyer puts it over to Bobby Richardson to cover the bat. The runners move up.
- 1:54:09Howler goes to third base. Davenport to second with one out.
- 1:54:12And the batter will be Jack Sanford.
- 1:54:14Yogi, Terry and Long out there talking deep in mind that Almond Dark's very sweet on the squeeze play.
- 1:54:22It was Sanford who squeezed the run home against Drysdale in the playoff game.
- 1:54:27Sanford has had his instructions from his manager. You can bet on that.
- 1:54:31And as he takes a look down at Whitey Lachman, he does once a kind of a confirmation,
- 1:54:37which tells him that Dark was able to get the message through the Whitey Lachman.
- 1:54:41But those Yankees, you can bet, he'll be expecting anything.
- 1:54:44Jack Sanford standing in. Here's the first pitch.
- 1:54:48Ball, it's down low. One ball and that strikes. The Yankees are looking for the bot.
- 1:54:54Both Long and Boyer came racing in as Terry delivers the first pitch.
- 1:54:59Sanford gave no indication he was going to bot.
- 1:55:02Terry's going to pitch off the stretch Yogi has for it.
- 1:55:06One ball and that strikes. Here's the pitch.
- 1:55:11Ball, he checked his swing and time. Yogi, he's gone through it.
- 1:55:16World, and shot he buried.
- 1:55:18No, it's a ball too and no strike down.
- 1:55:22It's a two to nothing ball game here in the seventh.
- 1:55:25The giant's out in front and have runners at second and third with one out.
- 1:55:30Willie McCovey opened the setting with a long home run.
- 1:55:37Here's the pitch to Sanford. Strike, he got the fast ball over.
- 1:55:41A ball too and a strike one count.
- 1:55:45They've got Yogi in the jackpot to where he can't pitch out unless he's absolutely sure.
- 1:55:50But a lot of times when you have a pitcher up there, now Sanford is taking extra time getting the signs from Lachman.
- 1:55:56Now usually let him take at least one swing or take one strike before they put a play on.
- 1:56:01I bet that Yogi would like to see the count one and one instead of two and one so he could pitch out.
- 1:56:05Something might be going right up out here.
- 1:56:08Terry getting set.
- 1:56:11Now he steps up.
- 1:56:14Dang this, the runners are going to have to commit themselves.
- 1:56:19He stepped off, Sanford stepped out of the box.
- 1:56:24Here's the two one pitch. He tries to body missed it and they've got Hallard trapped between home and third.
- 1:56:29Bear running him down.
- 1:56:31Here's the throw from Boyer now to the first base of Long.
- 1:56:34He's up to the back and he is tagged down at third base.
- 1:56:39A squeeze play was on. Sanford missed the ball and Yogi trapped Hallard between third and home.
- 1:56:47He threw to Boyer. Boyer threw to Long who was backing up Bear and they along ran him back to third.
- 1:56:53He threw the ball to Quebec who put the tag on Hallard.
- 1:56:57George being in the jackpot two balls and one strike.
- 1:57:00Yogi couldn't pitch out as we mentioned but he went to the next best thing which was the breaking ball and Sanford missed it and of course it breaks up the play.
- 1:57:06They let him take that one strike and then put the play on.
- 1:57:09If it doesn't work you can see what happens for you.
- 1:57:12So the Giants have a runner at second base with two outs and it's a ball two and a strike two count to Jack Sanford.
- 1:57:20Two outs the infield moving deep. Here's the pitch.
- 1:57:24Here's a line tag.
- 1:57:26Yes up to the ball. Here's the throw of the plate.
- 1:57:30And because he is out at the plate.
- 1:57:33Roger Meyers made a perfect throw in the Yogi bearer one half and he put the tag on the sliding Jimmy Davenport.
- 1:57:42It's off of the Giants in the seventh inning. One run.
- 1:57:45Two hits. One error. One man left.
- 1:57:48And the score at the end of seven four innings of play. The Giants two and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:57:55Driver with kind of a car is ahead of us.
- 1:57:57That's a 63 Chrysler 300.

- 1:58:38A product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:58:41Where quality is engineered into every car.
- 1:58:53Well a great thrill by Roger Marison right field.
- 1:58:56Cutting down Jimmy Davenport at the plate preventing further scoring.
- 1:58:59Here in the Sabbath inning but the Giants picked up a run.
- 1:59:02One run on three hits one hand one man left.
- 1:59:06And they lead the Yankees by a score of two to nothing as we go into the eighth inning.
- 1:59:10Big round of applause for Samford as he goes to the mound.
- 1:59:14Jack cooking a little time after his base hit.
- 1:59:17He went back to the dugout and he just got out getting out of the mound.
- 1:59:20George Edford all that Marison Clark is really a catcher's delight.
- 1:59:23It was the one hopper hit that grabs, took off.
- 1:59:26Yogi had plenty of time to catch it.
- 1:59:28Take the ball out of the glove, put it in the bare hand.
- 1:59:30Use the glove for a decline tag Davenport.
- 1:59:33Those are the kind you really like.
- 1:59:35Ed Bailey has had some tough throws of handle from the outfield.
- 1:59:39The Giants are concerned.
- 1:59:41I know he's coming for a little bit of criticism which I kind of think is unfair
- 1:59:45because they've been short hop throws.
- 1:59:47Any time you get short hop throws they're really tough to handle
- 1:59:50because you've got to hold your ground and make sure that you catch the ball first.
- 1:59:54And you're doing all this while there's a big thundering herd coming down
- 1:59:57and the person of any base runner with a throw like Yogi had the handle.
- 2:00:01Nice one hopper.
- 2:00:03That's the kind you like.
- 2:00:05You like to see those fellas tag.
- 2:00:07I didn't know catchers tagged them oh so nicely.
- 2:00:11Nobody ever tagged me that way.
- 2:00:13They slammed it into my back and put the shin guard into my other side of me
- 2:00:17or something and blocked the plate.
- 2:00:20Well we call that nicely.
- 2:00:22Oh, I didn't understand.
- 2:00:25Well it'll be Clint Boyer to lead off here in the eighth inning for the Yankees.
- 2:00:29Johnny Blanchard has moved into the on-deck circle.
- 2:00:32More than likely he's got a bat for Terry and then Tony Cubak.
- 2:00:36Boyer's had one hit in two trips today.
- 2:00:38He applied to center field in the third inning.
- 2:00:40Singled a left in the fifth inning.
- 2:00:43Sanford ready and here's the first pitch.
- 2:00:46Strike he got a fast ball over round the knees.
- 2:00:54Marshall Bridges a left hander and Bud Daley a left hander
- 2:00:58throwing in the bullpen for the Yankees.
- 2:01:00We'll have a new pitcher in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:01:06Here's the one strike pitch.
- 2:01:08A swing of a miss.
- 2:01:09He got the carter ball behind breaking down on away.
- 2:01:12Strike two to Boyer.
- 2:01:20Sanford working very slowly right now.
- 2:01:23He has a two nothing lead.
- 2:01:24He doesn't want to make a mistake.
- 2:01:27The bitstically outside slider off the corner.
- 2:01:31One ball two strikes.
- 2:01:33Well tomorrow's an off day.
- 2:01:35We'll be traveling east.
- 2:01:37And the World Series will open in Yankee Stadium for the third game on Sunday.
- 2:01:41Billy Pierce for the Giants.
- 2:01:43Bill Stafford will be the pitcher for the Yankees.
- 2:01:46Boyer's had a good miss on a third ball.
- 2:01:52Strike out number five for Jack Sanford in this ball game.
- 2:01:56It's one away and Johnny Blanchard will come on the bat for Terry.
- 2:02:06Terry's thinking his first World Series win really has to leave in a tough spot to
- 2:02:10Georgia's fixed a tremendous ball game when you hold a giant ball club that's loaded with power as this one is
- 2:02:16and give up only two runs like he has and have to leave.
- 2:02:19It's one of those games where somebody has to win and somebody has to lose
- 2:02:23and that's the best way you can put it. Terry fixed a tremendous ball game.
- 2:02:26He has Joe and his mound opponent Sanford has pitched even a better ball game.
- 2:02:32Here's the pitch to Blanchard.
- 2:02:35Ball outside one ball no strikes.
- 2:02:37Jack has been a tough man today.
- 2:02:39He's given up two hits.
- 2:02:42Single to Thresh in the fourth inning on a pop fly butt and a lion single to left by Boyer.
- 2:02:49That was back in the fifth inning.
- 2:02:54Here's the one and oh pitch.
- 2:02:56Strike he comes to corner with this one.
- 2:02:58One and one to Johnny Blanchard.
- 2:03:03Johnny a left handed batter.
- 2:03:05This fellow has been a pitch header deluxe for the Yankees.
- 2:03:10Not a big home run pitch hitting in the World Series last year against Cincinnati.
- 2:03:16Home run that tied the score in the eighth inning.
- 2:03:19The Yankees won it in the ninth on a Homer by Maris.
- 2:03:25Sanford taking a little time as he looks in.
- 2:03:28Here's the one one pitch.
- 2:03:30A swing on a miss.
- 2:03:32A small round of knees.
- 2:03:34One ball two strikes.
- 2:03:36One ball two strikes.
- 2:03:41We're in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:43There's one out with no one on.
- 2:03:45The Giants in front of the Yankees by a score of two to nothing.
- 2:03:48One ball two strikes to Johnny Blanchard.
- 2:03:52Sanford gets ready.
- 2:03:54Here's the pitch.
- 2:03:56A swing on a miss.
- 2:03:58He's looking out.
- 2:04:00Blanchard goes down swinging.
- 2:04:03He's looking out number six by Jack Sanford.
- 2:04:06And the batter will be Tony Cuback.
- 2:04:11Tony has bounced the second flight to center and struck out in three trips.
- 2:04:22Sanford said before the ball game, Joe,
- 2:04:25that he was going to go as far as he could, as hard as he could.
- 2:04:28He's going mighty strong here in the eighth inning.
- 2:04:33The pitch to Tony Cuback.
- 2:04:35Down low.
- 2:04:36One ball, no strikes.
- 2:04:38Still appears to have real good stuff too, George.
- 2:04:40You haven't been many balls hit to that outfield.
- 2:04:46Button Daly has taken his seat in the bullfin.
- 2:04:48Marshall Bridges continues to throw.
- 2:04:51Here's the one and no pitch.
- 2:04:53Just blank the fastball in the round, babe.
- 2:04:56One-on-one to Cuback.
- 2:05:05Tony batting with two outs and no one on here on the top of the eighth.
- 2:05:09Here's the one-one pitch.
- 2:05:11A ground ball.
- 2:05:12It's slowly for his second base.
- 2:05:14He's already racing in. Here's the throw.
- 2:05:16He is out in first base.
- 2:05:21Bloody Cuback goes out.
- 2:05:23That is the first on his lost play.
- 2:05:26No runs, no hits, no errors, no long left.
- 2:05:29And the scorching into the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:05:31The Giants two and the Yankees nothing.
- 2:05:35Now there's a car I'd like to own.
- 2:05:37A 63 Chrysler?
- 2:05:39I don't blame you.
- 2:05:43The crisp new custom look of Chrysler 63.
- 2:05:46You'll see it in the big, full-size Chrysler Newport.

- 2:06:13Let your dealer show you the crisp new custom look of Chrysler 63.
- 2:06:19A product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 2:06:21Work quality is engineered into every car.
- 2:06:33That's the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:35The Giants out in front by a score of two to nothing.
- 2:06:38Chuck Hiller, the second baseman, will be the leadoff man.
- 2:06:44He'll be followed by Philippe Ballou and then Matty Allou.
- 2:06:47And a new pitcher coming on for the Yankees here in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:51It's a left-hander, Bud Daly.
- 2:06:53Bud won seventh and lost five during the regular season.
- 2:06:57Appeared in 43 ball games.
- 2:07:02So Daly has reached the mound and started his warm-up tosses.
- 2:07:05And the Yankees have made their first pitching change in this 1962 World Series.
- 2:07:11Daly won over Plowry with this stuff.
- 2:07:14He has a big wide-breaking curveball.
- 2:07:16Another one of these changes-speed pitchers and he throws a knuckleball.
- 2:07:20The eighth-battery.
- 2:07:23About every one of them, Chuck Hiller.
- 2:07:32Chuck Hiller, left-handed hitting second baseman, steps in to lead it off.
- 2:07:36He's had a double in two official trips.
- 2:07:39He doubled and scored a run in the first inning,
- 2:07:41walked in the third and bounced to the first baseman in the sixth inning.
- 2:07:45Daly ready and here's the first pitch.
- 2:07:48A curveball, it's in there, one strike.
- 2:07:55The Chayas got one run in the first on a double, a sacrifice and a ground ball.
- 2:07:59They picked up another in the seventh on a home run by a Willie McCovey.
- 2:08:03There's another curve, it's outside.
- 2:08:05One ball, one strike.
- 2:08:09Daly thrown a fixed low curveball as Hiller's got a foot gun on the left-hand.
- 2:08:14Hiller's got a foot gun up there, he can spray that ball all over
- 2:08:17and he'll be trying to punch that ball in the opposite field.
- 2:08:21Here's the one-one pitch.
- 2:08:23A curvy swings and misses.
- 2:08:25One ball, two strikes.
- 2:08:27That was a big round-ass curveball.
- 2:08:30Joe told you he'll flip a lot of them up there.
- 2:08:33That's the kind of pop your shoestrings, George.
- 2:08:38Daly into the lineup.
- 2:08:40Here's the one-two pitch.
- 2:08:42Daly pops it up outside a third.
- 2:08:44Boy, you're racing over, he's there.
- 2:08:46He's got it.
- 2:08:48Chuck Hiller fouls to the third baseman and fleets for you.
- 2:08:51Bring up Philippe Alloux, the right fielder.
- 2:08:55Alloux is one for two, officially.
- 2:08:58The sacrifice in the first inning.
- 2:09:00Alloux to the third baseman and third.
- 2:09:03He's tangled in the left-center field in the sixth inning.
- 2:09:13Marshall Bridges and Jim Coates are throwing in the bullpen
- 2:09:16for New York down the right fielder line.
- 2:09:20Here's the pitch to Alloux.
- 2:09:22Curve, it's inside, it gets by the catcher,
- 2:09:24he goes all the way back.
- 2:09:26One ball and a strikes.
- 2:09:28Philippe Alloux, a strong right-handed batter.
- 2:09:31Batting with one out, no one on, we're in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:09:34The Giants two and the Yankees nothing.
- 2:09:37Giants trying to get even in this 1962 World Series.
- 2:09:42Yankees won yesterday behind Whitey Ford, six to two.
- 2:09:46Here's the pitch.
- 2:09:47Alloux takes it outside.
- 2:09:49Ball two and no strikes.
- 2:09:51Ball two and no strikes.
- 2:10:00Daly, a slow worker, thinks a lot of time between pitches as he looks in.
- 2:10:04Here's the two and no pitch.
- 2:10:06Curve ball outside, ball three and no strikes.
- 2:10:10It felt like Bud Daly or Stu Miller in this ballpark,
- 2:10:14after really used Kentucky Windage,
- 2:10:16and they throw that ball up to the eighth batter,
- 2:10:18and he's had wind a little bit.
- 2:10:22Daly wanted a new baseball, he tossed that one into better,
- 2:10:25and Charlie Berry made the exchange.
- 2:10:27Here's the three and no pitch.
- 2:10:29Upside.
- 2:10:31Philippe Alloux draws a one.
- 2:10:33He's put a runner in first base with one out,
- 2:10:36and the batter will be Maddie Alloux, the left fielder.
- 2:10:39Maddie's a left handed batter.
- 2:10:51Maddie drove in the first run of the game in the first inning,
- 2:10:54when he drilled a ground ball to the second baseman
- 2:10:56with a runner at third base and one out.
- 2:10:58He bounced to first base in the fourth
- 2:11:00and flyed the center field in the sixth inning.
- 2:11:06Daly delivers.
- 2:11:08He's got a curve and it's in there, one strike.
- 2:11:10The Yankees are looking for the bun.
- 2:11:12Boyer came racing in on that pitch.
- 2:11:14They figured that Alloux, a left handed batter,
- 2:11:16might be bunning the runner down the second
- 2:11:19to give Willie Mays a chance to drive him in.
- 2:11:21You really have to check your scorecard then, George,
- 2:11:23if they get him down the second base,
- 2:11:25they put Mays on and Daly gets McCovey or Sopeta,
- 2:11:28so you'd be jumping two hitters down.
- 2:11:30Kind of surprising to see Boyer in looking for the bun.
- 2:11:33Daly taking a little time, goes to the Rosenbag.
- 2:11:36He's got a runner at first base with one out.
- 2:11:42Here's the pitch.
- 2:11:44Curve ball, he pops it foul behind the plate,
- 2:11:46this one coming back into the crown.
- 2:11:48A strike two down.
- 2:11:55Maddie Alloux, a left handed batter,
- 2:11:57standing in against the left handed but Daly.
- 2:11:59Got Killa, the first batter in the setting,
- 2:12:04fouled to the third baseman.
- 2:12:06Felix Alloux walked on four straight pitches.
- 2:12:09Now Maddie Alloux, the batter with a strike two down.
- 2:12:16A two to nothing ball game, the giants in front.
- 2:12:18Here's the pitch.
- 2:12:20Fly ball hit down the right field,
- 2:12:22and this one is curving foul back into the crown.
- 2:12:25Roger Barrett's racing over to the seats for this one,
- 2:12:29some five or six throws back yet.
- 2:12:31Still strike two.
- 2:12:33I believe Alloux broke his fat on that one.
- 2:12:35He's back to the dugout to get a new one.
- 2:12:37When they break down the basics of pitching,
- 2:12:40they say that pitching is keeping the hitter off stride,
- 2:12:43and that Daly does a pretty good job of that.
- 2:12:45I tell you, he looks like the guy at the corner
- 2:12:47with a little dart drawer, a little bit here,
- 2:12:49a little bit there, puts a little on,
- 2:12:51takes a little bit off.
- 2:12:52Curve ball, he's had a little way up in front.
- 2:12:59Well Maddie gets a new bat, he gets back in.
- 2:13:03Little left handed batter, he's right down on the end of the bat.
- 2:13:08Daly gets set.
- 2:13:10Here's the bench.
- 2:13:11Mass ball outside, just off the corner.
- 2:13:13One ball to strike.
- 2:13:17Daly is keeping an eye on Alloux at first base.
- 2:13:20Daly is keeping an eye on Alloux at first base.
- 2:13:26Daly looks a fast base runner, and Daly wants to give
- 2:13:29Yogi a chance to cut him down.
- 2:13:31He can strike for a second.
- 2:13:33One ball, two strikes.
- 2:13:37Daly checks his sign.
- 2:13:39Here's the bench.
- 2:13:40Way up high, gets away from better,
- 2:13:42but no chance for Alloux at the above.
- 2:13:44Yogi reached out, knocked it down,
- 2:13:46and he grabbed it with his bad hand.
- 2:13:50A real good play by Yogi, George.
- 2:13:54The way he's been pitching him, he's been pitching him outside,
- 2:13:57and this one would look like a little bit almost behind him.
- 2:14:00Yogi with quick hands.
- 2:14:04That's a ball too, and a strike too, God.
- 2:14:08Daly taking a lot of time right now.
- 2:14:10He gets off the rubber again, goes to the rosin bag
- 2:14:13and gets back on.
- 2:14:19Matty Alloux standing in, waiting.
- 2:14:25There's a quick turn at first base.
- 2:14:27He'll get back in time.
- 2:14:34Daly keeping a close eye on the base runner at first base.
- 2:14:38Ready to go.
- 2:14:40Here's the two-two pitch.
- 2:14:42Curve ball, he hides it down on the right field line.
- 2:14:45He'll spin back in the crowd.
- 2:14:47Still two and two.
- 2:14:49Daly hung the curve ball once again.
- 2:14:51This one high inside.
- 2:14:53Alloux getting out in front.
- 2:14:57The Giants have two runs on five hits and no errors.
- 2:15:01The Yankees have no runs on two hits,
- 2:15:03and they've committed one error.
- 2:15:05The error did not contribute to the scoring in this ballgame.
- 2:15:09Here's a bench.
- 2:15:11He boxed down the third baseline.
- 2:15:13Boyer with a quick turn at first base.
- 2:15:28With two strikes on him, Matty Alloux bunted down the third baseline.
- 2:15:32He bunted the ball hard.
- 2:15:34Boyer raised in, grabbed it, made a quick off balance throw in the first base.
- 2:15:38It was too high and it'll be a little single for Matty Alloux.
- 2:15:41With nine out of ten pitches from Daly being that slow curve ball,
- 2:15:45Matty Alloux gambled it.
- 2:15:47It would be the slow curve ball, and they knew he wouldn't have to come up with the perfect bun.
- 2:15:50He gambled in one, and he has just set up a pretty good size inning here for these Giants.
- 2:15:55They got the middle line up coming up.
- 2:15:57Runners at first and second with one out, and the batter is Willi Mayes.
- 2:16:01Willi's 0-3 today.
- 2:16:03Here's the bench, way outside with a knuckleball.
- 2:16:08One ball and a strike.
- 2:16:12The Yankees are deep on the infield.
- 2:16:14They're looking for something on the ground that can turn into a double play.
- 2:16:19Daly Colou at second base, Matty Alloux at first base, one out in the eighth inning.
- 2:16:23The Giants two and the Yankees nothing.
- 2:16:27Daly gets set.
- 2:16:31Here's the one at no pitch.
- 2:16:33Strike, he got a slow curve ball over.
- 2:16:36You can bet that that play by Alloux is one that he put on himself.
- 2:16:40He won't be positive until you talk to the manager,
- 2:16:43Daly would have to poll it off eight or nine pitches.
- 2:16:46He had Boyer way wide in the bag, and he gambled in.
- 2:16:49It's a big gamble playing. It's paid off for him.
- 2:16:52Willi Mayes in the batter with a ball and a strike.
- 2:16:55Two on, one out in the eighth.
- 2:16:57Daly gets set.
- 2:17:01There's a quick throw to second.
- 2:17:02Noo, the L of All, he whirled and made a fake throw down to second.
- 2:17:06Richardson coming over behind the Lou, but no chance to get him, so Daly just holds the ball.
- 2:17:13One ball, one strike.
- 2:17:20Daly delivers. Here's a five ball.
- 2:17:23Now going back, back, he's deep center, makes the catch.
- 2:17:27Alloux tags up, moves to third, Maddie going to second, slides in safely.
- 2:17:35Willi Mayes at the ball, some 400 feet away in the straight away center field.
- 2:17:40Mickey Mammal going back to make the catch.
- 2:17:43Billipaloo moves to third base, and Maddie Alloux down to second with two outs.
- 2:17:48And the batter will be Willi McCovey.
- 2:17:55McCovey is that one hit today. That was a whole run in the seventh inning.
- 2:18:00Get round to McClos for Willi as he depths in.
- 2:18:07Runners at second and third with two outs.
- 2:18:10Daly into the windup, the pitch, a curve outside. McCovey checked his swing. One ball, no strike.
- 2:18:21A giant lead, two to nothing. Daly didn't give Billipaloo much of a look at third base.
- 2:18:30There's the one and no pitch. A curve ball hit on the ground. Richardson has good play.
- 2:18:34Here's a shot of first, he's out. Bobby Richardson made a great play as he went to his left.
- 2:18:39One handed pickup flipped it over to Daly along. No runs on one hit, there were nowhere.
- 2:18:45Two men left, down the story, the inner eight. The giants two and the Yankees nothing.

- 2:20:21Well, it's the top of the ninth inning here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco,
- 2:20:26and the Giants are out in front of the Yankees by a score of 2-0.
- 2:20:30Bobby Richardson will lead off for New York. He'll be followed by Tom Driesch and then Mickey Maddell.
- 2:20:37Bobby looking for his first hit today, bounced to the shortstop twice, then fly to Centerfield.
- 2:20:45Jack Sanford has gone all the way for the Giants.
- 2:20:48Here's a pitch to Bobby. Strike a fastball right in there.
- 2:20:52Richardson was taking all the way, trying to work his way on to get the tying run after the plate.
- 2:20:58A one strike count.
- 2:21:02Sanford into the lineup. Here's the pitch.
- 2:21:05A ground ball back to the mound. Jack has it on one hot hole for the first and 20 of that.
- 2:21:10Bobby Richardson goes down to pitcher in the first baseman.
- 2:21:14That's one away, and the batter will be Tom Driesch.
- 2:21:21Bobby walked into first inning, singled into fourth, and struck out into sixth inning. He's one for two.
- 2:21:34Sanford will be trying to keep Driesch off of there. Maddell and Merris following, representing the tying run.
- 2:21:41Here's the pitch. It's a foul. One ball, and a strike.
- 2:21:47A two-to-nothing ball game in the top of the ninth inning. Sanford has given up with two hits.
- 2:21:52One a bunch single, one a lion-single, the left field.
- 2:21:56Here's the one in open. He swings and hits a bouncer to second.
- 2:21:59Still a foul, just to throw the first beat out.
- 2:22:02Bobby Driesch goes out second to third.
- 2:22:05That's two down, and leaving up to Mickey Mow.
- 2:22:12Mickey is looking for his first hit in the World Series.
- 2:22:18He has passed to the shortstop, fouled a third, and bounced to the first baseman today.
- 2:22:24Tom Haller, the catcher, goes out to the mound for a short conversation with Sanford.
- 2:22:31We're in the top of the ninth inning. There's two outs with no one on.
- 2:22:35Sure, it joins it to hell. It was just reminding.
- 2:22:38Sanford, he's got a two-run lead, and man will be trying to get on, and man will, of course, can bump that ball.
- 2:22:43They need a base runner. And the last thing you want to impress on your pitcher's mind is to make him hit his way on.
- 2:22:48You don't want to walk him on to get that time.
- 2:22:50Man'll in the box, steps out for a moment.
- 2:22:58There's a war of nerves going on right now between Sanford and Mannell.
- 2:23:02Mickey steps in. We're ready to go. Jack gets ready. Here's the bitch.
- 2:23:07It's right behind the passball.
- 2:23:09Mickey Mow's going to go out.
- 2:23:12There you go. Jack gets ready. Here's the bitch. Striking on the passball.
- 2:23:20Mickey Mow steps back. Charlie Berry went up with the right hand, and Mickey Whirl and said something to Berry.
- 2:23:25Man'll thought the bitch was inside.
- 2:23:28Oh, one strike count.
- 2:23:33Sanford taking the long look in.
- 2:23:36Here's the bitch.
- 2:23:38It's outside. One-in-one to the mic.
- 2:23:45Both the Giants and the Yankees will be flying out of here right after this ball game.
- 2:23:50Back to New York, where the Whirl series will resume on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:23:56Sanford gets ready. Here's the one-one fence.
- 2:24:00He swings a long belt in the deep right center field. It's well-hitted. It's off the fence.
- 2:24:05Man'll always wait a second. He'll go in with a double.
- 2:24:08A line drive off the fence in deep right center field, and Man'll is at second base.
- 2:24:22It's all with a runner at second and two outs. Roger Meyers steps in, representing the tying run for the Yankees.
- 2:24:29That's the first-face runner at second base for the Yankee sister-fourth inning, when Tom Thresh had a one-single and still second.
- 2:24:39Sanford gets set. The pitch to Meyers. A ground ball hit hard into second base.
- 2:24:45Another half of the time.
- 2:24:47That's Elevator. Fine play as he raced to his right, made a backhand pick up and flipped it over to Tevi.
- 2:24:57In time to get Roger Meyers. In the nice inning, no runs on one hit.
- 2:25:02No errors. One man left. And the final score of this ball game, the Giants two, the Yankees nothing.
- 2:25:09In one moment, we'll be back to review the highlights of this game for you.
- 2:25:13Here are more details on the new warranty described earlier in this game.
- 2:25:17The new five-year or 50,000-mile warranty on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 2:25:22This is the most important warranty ever offered on an automobile.
- 2:25:26It covers the powertrain, the workhorse of your car, the expensive parts to repair or replace.
- 2:25:32And the warranty is transferable if you sell the car.
- 2:25:35See your dealer for full details on the industry's first five-year or 50,000-mile warranty from Chrysler Corporation.
- 2:25:43Well, Jack Sanford pitched a dandy here today as the Giants even it up, winning two to nothing.
- 2:25:49And here's Joe Gargiolo with all the highlights.
- 2:25:52Well, the highlights as far as the scoring was concerned, they little sacrificed fun by Philippe Ballou.
- 2:25:58True to be enough as far as Jack Sanford was concerned, who came up with the shutout.
- 2:26:02Here's the score and went. Heller hit a ball in the very first inning down the right field line.
- 2:26:06Roger Maris, a tremendous effort, came up with the ball, had the ball in his glove,
- 2:26:11but it looked like the momentum carrying him beyond the right field foul line.
- 2:26:16He dropped the ball and it was a two-base hit for Chuck Heller.
- 2:26:20Allu then making sure that he would get the ball to the right side,
- 2:26:24willing to take the out for the base, punted the ball to make sure he got it over there,
- 2:26:29punted it to Dale Long, who stepped on first for the unassisted putout,
- 2:26:34and Heller took third. And then Matty Allu bounced out from Richardson to Long, and that was one run.
- 2:26:40The other giant run was a tremendous blast by Willie McCrubbie, who was in the lineup replacing Orlando Sapega,
- 2:26:46and that came in the seventh inning. That was a scoring for the Giants.
- 2:26:51Jack Sanford, the shutout winner and the tough luck loser was Ralph Terry.
- 2:26:55Terry was still seeking his first World Series win, pitched a fine ball game,
- 2:27:00had to leave the ball game in a seventh inning replaced by Bud Daley.
- 2:27:05But Jack Sanford just outpitched him.
- 2:27:07Sanford, only four balls to the outfield.
- 2:27:11Three to Willie Mays, and one to Matty Allu in the left field.
- 2:27:16To go by the strength of Sanford's pitching, only two men reached the second base.
- 2:27:22That was Mickey Mellon, a ninth inning, and Tom Thresh back in the fourth inning when he stole.
- 2:27:28Some defensive plays, Roger Merrits a fine throw to get to Sanford, to get the Davenport on the Sanford base hit.
- 2:27:35It seemed like that was going to be a play to pick these Giants up after a squeeze play.
- 2:27:41It didn't work out for him. Sanford hit the ball in the right field,
- 2:27:44but Merrits with the perfect throw, able to get the base winner Davenport.
- 2:27:48So Jack Sanford, who has been a tough pitcher for these Giants,
- 2:27:53and as far as complete games go, during the regular season he had 13 of them, he had two shutouts,
- 2:27:58and he had never pitched a bigger shutout in his life, George, and he pitched here this afternoon,
- 2:28:02as they beat the New York Yankees by the score up, 2-0.
- 2:28:07So it'll be on to New York now, and it'll be Bill Pierce
- 2:28:16for the San Francisco Giants, and Bill Stafford for the pitcher for the Yankees.
