- 0:21Speaker 1: Eric Morris, head coach of Oklahoma State, going to join
- 0:23Speaker 1: us here in about 10 minutes. And we'll get to
- 0:26Speaker 1: Ichiro here in just a second. There's a funny story
- 0:28Speaker 1: involving him, an unbelievable story involving him. Taylor, the Falcons
- 0:33Speaker 1: play Carolina this weekend, and I just saw some breaking
- 0:36Speaker 1: news here. Cooper Rush will start again as the Falcons quarterback.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm out on that game. I don't need to
- 0:44Speaker 2: do the Cooper Rush experience for a second week in
- 0:46Speaker 2: a row. Somebody just text me what happens in that
- 0:49Speaker 2: Panthers-Falcons game.
- 0:51Speaker 1: But if you don't watch the game, you're missing out
- 0:52Speaker 1: on the Carolina experience as well.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I mean, that's a fun experience.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I could live without it.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Could you?
- 0:58Speaker 4: I mean.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I need a red zone of just when Carolina has
- 1:01Speaker 2: the ball. If NFL Network could work on that.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Put it on the poll. Would you like a red
- 1:07Speaker 3: zone just for the Carolina Panthers?
- 1:10Speaker 1: But you will not watch that game because Cooper Rush,
- 1:13Speaker 1: Penix isn't ready yet, Tua is hurt, and you said
- 1:15Speaker 1: you will not watch Cooper Rush play quarterback.
- 1:18Speaker 2: No, I just know what's going to happen when you
- 1:20Speaker 2: watch Cooper Rush. He's going to finish like 53% completion percentage.
- 1:24Speaker 2: The offense is going to look dreadful. Cooper Rush has
- 1:28Speaker 2: this rare ability to make an offense with Kyle Pitts,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Drake London, and Bijan Robinson. borderline unwatchable.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:35Speaker 3: But some of that could be Kyle Pitts's fault. I mean,
- 1:38Speaker 3: it's always Kyle Pitts's fault. Put it on the poll.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Is it always Kyle Pitts's fault?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Uh, Mikey, I only bring up, uh, I only bring
- 1:48Speaker 1: this up because, uh, of a, of an amazing record.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The jets have said here, Micah Fitzpatrick is out for
- 1:53Speaker 1: the jets. I like the jets to win this weekend. Regardless,
- 1:56Speaker 1: he wants me to stop saying that, uh, they're taking
- 1:59Speaker 1: on the green Bay Packers. Um, Do you realize the
- 2:02Speaker 1: interception drought that the Jets are going through right now?
- 2:06Speaker 1: And do you realize just how long it's been and
- 2:08Speaker 1: how many passes it's been since they have lucked into
- 2:11Speaker 1: an interception?
- 2:12Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 2:15Speaker 5: It's disgusting. It's like it's it's such. futility in a
- 2:22Speaker 5: such a key aspect of the game.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Turnovers matter. I mean, the bears entire defense is built
- 2:28Speaker 6: on turnovers. They're not going to stop anybody, but every
- 2:31Speaker 6: once in a while, we're going to take the ball
- 2:33Speaker 6: away and then we're going to score and the jets
- 2:35Speaker 6: can't even fall into an interception.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:38Speaker 5: They can't even accidentally have a quarterback. Oops. Didn't see him.
- 2:42Speaker 6: And they wear green on green field and they can't
- 2:45Speaker 6: have somebody accidentally.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Throw them the ball. And it's not going to happen
- 2:48Speaker 5: again this weekend.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I believe it's been like 18 consecutive games, 371 pass
- 2:53Speaker 1: attempts or something like that.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Taylor, you played football at North Carolina.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Like, you're going to luck into an interception over an
- 2:59Speaker 1: 18-game span, right?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Anyone will.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, this stretch is borderline impossible. And trust me, I
- 3:04Speaker 2: want to defend the Jets here. I was watching that
- 3:07Speaker 2: Week 1 game against Tennessee, rooting for a Jets interception.
- 3:11Speaker 2: To the Jets' credit, just in Week 1, Cam Ward
- 3:14Speaker 2: didn't really put the ball in too many bad spots
- 3:17Speaker 2: for as bad as Cam Ward looked. Like when you're
- 3:19Speaker 2: looking at the schedule, you're like, it's going to take
- 3:21Speaker 2: a very bad quarterback to throw this interception. And it
- 3:25Speaker 2: felt like Cam Ward was that guy. And Cam Ward
- 3:28Speaker 2: just doesn't really throw high risk passes. It didn't at
- 3:31Speaker 2: least seem that way that game.
- 3:34Speaker 7: Question for you. Is there more pressure on the Jets
- 3:36Speaker 7: secondary to get an interception or on every opposing quarterback
- 3:40Speaker 7: not to be the guy that finally breaks the streak?
- 3:42Speaker 3: That is a great question. Who is it this weekend?
- 3:44Speaker 3: Jordan Love? Jordan Love.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Future Jet Jordan Love.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So he's feeling the heat like, hey, I don't want
- 3:50Speaker 1: to be the guy. I don't want to throw an
- 3:52Speaker 1: interception against that team.
- 3:53Speaker 3: No one does. And the Jets are so desperate. They're secondary.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Who is more desperate? It's a great question by you.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Mikey, this is like in baseball. When any time a
- 4:02Speaker 2: batter is close to a home run record, like when
- 4:04Speaker 2: Barry Bonds was at like 755 home runs. Right. And
- 4:08Speaker 2: teams are like, I don't want to be the one
- 4:09Speaker 2: who gives up the home run to him and be
- 4:12Speaker 2: in the history.
- 4:12Speaker 5: You're going to watch that video forever.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And it's like.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I am just going to intentionally walk Barry Bonds four times,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and then next game, it's somebody else's responsibility. I think
- 4:22Speaker 2: that's what quarterbacks are now doing to the Jets at
- 4:24Speaker 2: this point.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Let's try to identify who the quarterback is that's going
- 4:27Speaker 1: to throw the interception against the Jets. Because I don't
- 4:30Speaker 1: think it's going to be Jordan Love, and I'm looking
- 4:32Speaker 1: at the schedule.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Oh, they have Jared Goff after that.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Then it's Caleb Williams, and then they get to Deshaun
- 4:38Speaker 1: Watson or Shador Sanders.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's going to be it, right? The Browns?
- 4:43Speaker 4: What will that be?
- 4:44Speaker 7: Game 22?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Without an interception?
- 4:46Speaker 5: Game 21?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yes, and you might be saying to yourselves, well, no.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I mean, come on. It could be anyone. No luck
- 4:51Speaker 3: into an interception. They haven't done it in 18 games.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I could talk myself into it being Caleb Williams because
- 4:57Speaker 2: Caleb Williams, there's a couple of passes Caleb Williams throws
- 5:00Speaker 2: every game where it's like, man, that was a high-risk throw.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Normally he completes them, but on the off chance it doesn't.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Caleb's not going into that game afraid of the Jets secondary.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think Jared Goff, in the back of Jared Goff's mind,
- 5:13Speaker 2: is like, I can't throw an interception.
- 5:15Speaker 3: He's saying, I don't want to be the guy. Caleb
- 5:16Speaker 3: Williams is like, I don't care if I'm the guy.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I don't care if I'm that guy. I'm going to
- 5:19Speaker 2: throw for 500 yards with Ben Johnson.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yes, I might throw a pick, but I'm going to
- 5:22Speaker 1: throw five touchdowns. And you're right, 500 plus yards. And
- 5:26Speaker 1: I don't care if they intercepted me. Who's going to
- 5:28Speaker 1: make fun of me? I'm the greatest quarterback in the game.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You guys hate that I say that. You hate that
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm already anointed Caleb Williams, who hasn't done anything.
- 5:37Speaker 3: As the greatest quarterback we've ever seen. Mikey, I can
- 5:39Speaker 3: tell you hate it. You do.
- 5:40Speaker 7: I only hate it until you're wrong.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So far, so good.
- 5:46Speaker 5: So far in one game, you're kind of right.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:50Speaker 5: And I hate that. I hate you being right.
- 5:52Speaker 7: It's really what I hate.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Well, thank you.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Sean McVay did a press conference yesterday. I think he
- 5:56Speaker 1: was indoors. He was wearing sunglasses. They were fighter pilot sunglasses.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The guy thinks he's Maverick and Top Gun. I imagine
- 6:04Speaker 1: him riding out of SoFi Stadium on a motorcycle with
- 6:07Speaker 1: a leather jacket on after every single game because he
- 6:11Speaker 1: thinks he's going to flight school or something.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Kenny Loggins is playing. Yes.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He did say, Australia, never again. We're never playing there again.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It's like, come on, man. Get over it and move on. Listen,
- 6:27Speaker 1: Todd in accounting, he went out there and he told you, hey,
- 6:31Speaker 1: you can fly in, hop off the bird, play a
- 6:33Speaker 1: football game, hop back on the bird and go home.
- 6:35Speaker 3: And you can't. So Todd is fired. McVay was wrong.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And it's wrong.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I guess it's wrong, depending on your vantage point, for
- 6:42Speaker 1: the NFL to send teams that far away for the
- 6:45Speaker 1: opening game of the season. But I don't hear, now
- 6:48Speaker 1: they won the game, anyone on San Francisco complaining. The
- 6:51Speaker 1: only person who's complained about this before and after is
- 6:55Speaker 1: Sean McVay, as if he's too good and they're too
- 6:57Speaker 1: good to be sent to Australia to play a game.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So I don't have any thoughts on them going to Australia,
- 7:03Speaker 2: but I do have thoughts on the sunglasses that Sean
- 7:06Speaker 2: McVay was wearing.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 3: You know, in.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Spider-Man, when the symbiote takes over and he becomes Venom,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and it's just like Spider-Man becomes Venom.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Well, if you say so.
- 7:16Speaker 7: Yes, I know that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yes, I know that.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Spidey.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Mikey, when I watch Sean McVay, it's like an L.A.
- 7:23Speaker 2: symbiote came and took over Sean McVay, and now Sean
- 7:26Speaker 2: McVay is just becoming L.A. Because when you look at
- 7:30Speaker 2: Sean McVay, it's like, this dude wants to be Los
- 7:33Speaker 2: Angeles so bad. Like, he'll go up to the press
- 7:36Speaker 2: conference with, like, a smoothie in his hand and sunglasses.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yes, L.V.A. That's a bad joke, but funny.
- 7:47Speaker 2: He is.
- 7:47Speaker 3: He's L.A. Listen, it happens. It happens to people. I
- 7:51Speaker 3: saw it right in front of my eyes. It happened
- 7:53Speaker 3: to George Zidano.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yes, that's a perfect example of the LA symbiote where
- 7:59Speaker 2: it's like, oh, now he's drinking kale smoothies from Air
- 8:02Speaker 2: One and telling everybody about his new yoga class.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yes, the last meal I had with Sedano before he
- 8:08Speaker 1: moved to LA was at an ale house.
- 8:09Speaker 3: We were eating wings. We were eating burgers. We were
- 8:12Speaker 3: eating grease. And then I went to see him in L.A.,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and you're right, kale smoothies.
- 8:17Speaker 2: The symbiote took over.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And he had sunglasses on. It's on. It was on.
- 8:23Speaker 1: But what do you make of McVay saying, hey, never again, Australia?
- 8:26Speaker 1: And if the NFL wants to send.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Them there again, they will. What is McVay going to
- 8:29Speaker 3: do about it?
- 8:29Speaker 1: You can't say no. I just don't like him complaining
- 8:32Speaker 1: about it after the fact. I know he did some
- 8:34Speaker 1: on the front end, but after the fact, as you're
- 8:36Speaker 1: getting ready for your next game against the Giants, and
- 8:38Speaker 1: you're off until Monday, by the way, He's had plenty
- 8:41Speaker 1: of time for his players to get rested up and
- 8:43Speaker 1: get right. They play on Monday night against the Giants.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I just don't like him complaining after the fact that
- 8:49Speaker 1: the trip to Australia was a hassle. He did have
- 8:52Speaker 1: to couch it.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Hey, great atmosphere. The fans were great. I'm just not
- 8:56Speaker 3: going there again.
- 8:58Speaker 2: This feels like the excuse before the excuse. Like Sean
- 9:01Speaker 2: McVay in the back of his mind is like, we
- 9:03Speaker 2: might lose the, he saw how good Jackson Dart looked.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And he's like, man, if Jackson performs like that again
- 9:09Speaker 2: in week two, there's a good chance he shreds our
- 9:11Speaker 2: defense the way Brock Purdy did. So he's just kind
- 9:14Speaker 2: of setting up the table. He's setting the table and
- 9:17Speaker 2: being like, hey, when we lose the Giants, remember guys,
- 9:21Speaker 2: we had to go all the way to Australia.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yes. If they have a bad season, it won't be
- 9:24Speaker 3: McVay's fault. It will be Melbourne's fault.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And if they have a good season, he overcame Melbourne
- 9:28Speaker 1: because he's such a great coach.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I mean, he just put himself in such a great situation.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I love him now.
- 9:35Speaker 7: He's doing the thing when he knows he's going to
- 9:37Speaker 7: call out sick. And like the last time he sees it.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 4: No, I'm OK.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Just a little tickle in the back of my throat.
- 9:43Speaker 5: I'm sure I'll pay.
- 9:44Speaker 7: And then, you know, yeah, you keep building it up
- 9:47Speaker 7: and then eventually you call out sick and you go
- 9:49Speaker 7: to six flags.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So right now, yes, he's feeling a tickle in his throat.
- 9:55Speaker 1: He's not certain if he's sick yet. If he loses
- 9:57Speaker 1: to the Giants, he's got one hundred and ten. got
- 10:00Speaker 1: to go to the hospital. And if he wins, he'll
- 10:04Speaker 1: feel fine. He'll feel great. He'll feel healthy. And he'll
- 10:07Speaker 1: never talk about Australia again. And he'll be happy to
- 10:09Speaker 1: go back there. I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 10:12Speaker 3: What did you do when you cut school? Where'd you go?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Six Flags?
- 10:16Speaker 5: Sure, Six Flags, great adventure. I wasn't going to Action Park.
- 10:20Speaker 3: That's where I went. My brothers weren't taking me to
- 10:21Speaker 3: Action Park. Yes, it was a park where none of
- 10:23Speaker 3: the rides worked, and I loved it.
- 10:27Speaker 1: If you didn't come home with scars from Action Park,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you didn't go to Action Park.
- 10:31Speaker 3: You didn't go. Eric Morris next.

- 11:53Speaker 1: Eric Morris is the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
- 11:56Speaker 1: They pulled off a massive upset last week against Oregon,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but he's on to next week, I am certain. Before
- 12:03Speaker 1: we get to the upcoming week, was that the best
- 12:06Speaker 1: that football has ever made you feel from a coaching standpoint,
- 12:08Speaker 1: winning that game, coach?
- 12:10Speaker 3: It was so exciting to watch.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been a part of some good ones. Extra rewarding,
- 12:16Speaker 4: I think, just because how poorly we played week one,
- 12:19Speaker 4: you know, and such a buildup this offseason and With
- 12:22Speaker 4: the new regime here, you know, brought a lot of
- 12:25Speaker 4: good players in here and fell flat on our face
- 12:27Speaker 4: week one and terrible performance. So I think after that
- 12:31Speaker 4: and then going through that week and watching our kids
- 12:33Speaker 4: prepare made it, you know, that much more rewarding. But yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 4: I mean, such a surreal experience for me, you know,
- 12:39Speaker 4: for my first game here at Boone Pickens Stadium.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Coach, when you lose that week one game to Tulsa,
- 12:45Speaker 2: how do you stop the doubt from coming into your building?
- 12:50Speaker 4: Yeah, easier said than done. I think just leaning into
- 12:53Speaker 4: old experiences, right? Took over when I was a young
- 12:56Speaker 4: buck at Incarnate Word. We went 0-2 and then were
- 13:00Speaker 4: able to rebound and win the conference championship that year.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Same thing at North Texas, you know, got beat by
- 13:07Speaker 4: Cal pretty good. And then we went to Florida International
- 13:10Speaker 4: FIU and had one of the worst performances that I'd
- 13:14Speaker 4: ever seen and rebounded after that. So I think just
- 13:17Speaker 4: leaning into those things and And really being able to
- 13:19Speaker 4: simplify things in the building, you know, have a really simple,
- 13:23Speaker 4: solid message to your coaches and players. Because we had
- 13:27Speaker 4: an execution problem that first. It wasn't a schematical thing.
- 13:30Speaker 4: It wasn't. I mean, there's a bunch of things you
- 13:32Speaker 4: could have pointed to. But at the end of the day,
- 13:34Speaker 4: we didn't block and tackle the two most simple things
- 13:37Speaker 4: in football, right? And so we simplified it. Kids worked hard. And,
- 13:42Speaker 4: you know, it was fun to see them celebrate after
- 13:45Speaker 4: that win.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Sometimes a team can surprise their coach. Were you surprised
- 13:48Speaker 1: at how well your team played against Oregon?
- 13:52Speaker 4: You know, I was surprised at just the physical dominance
- 13:54Speaker 4: that we had. Not just, you know, I think that
- 13:56Speaker 4: was obvious to see up front on the offense and
- 13:59Speaker 4: defensive line, but just the perimeter, too. You know, we
- 14:02Speaker 4: were phenomenal. I thought, you know, we played faster, executed
- 14:06Speaker 4: a high level, and were able to put together really,
- 14:08Speaker 4: you know, four really good quarters of football. The only thing,
- 14:11Speaker 4: you know, really, um, that I didn't like is, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 4: I think we had eight red zone chances and only
- 14:16Speaker 4: scored four touchdowns. So, I mean, we got to capitalize
- 14:19Speaker 4: once we get down there in the red area a
- 14:20Speaker 4: little bit better and not settle for field goals.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Did you let him know about it? Like you didn't
- 14:24Speaker 1: let him get too high right after that victory. You
- 14:26Speaker 1: can't do that, right? You got Murray state coming up.
- 14:29Speaker 4: No, I mean, we got good ball, bad ball every week. Um,
- 14:32Speaker 4: you know, challenged them in every fashion, you know, after
- 14:35Speaker 4: that loss to Tulsa. And I think, you know, um,
- 14:39Speaker 4: To see them respond that way. And then I thought
- 14:42Speaker 4: it was really good, too, just to be able to
- 14:43Speaker 4: go in and point out, you know, how it could
- 14:45Speaker 4: have been even better. Right. And, you know, it could
- 14:48Speaker 4: have been a more of a dominant performance and a
- 14:50Speaker 4: dominant win if we clean up a couple of things
- 14:53Speaker 4: here and there.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Coach, I loved your team last year at North Texas
- 14:56Speaker 2: and I loved your quarterback, Drew Messamaker, who follows you
- 14:59Speaker 2: to Oklahoma State. When you took the Oklahoma State job,
- 15:03Speaker 2: what was that recruiting process like? It had to be like,
- 15:05Speaker 2: come on, come on, Drew. Let's keep the band together.
- 15:09Speaker 4: It's just interesting, you know, and Drew's never been recruited, right?
- 15:14Speaker 4: And he's a guy that out of high school, you know,
- 15:16Speaker 4: didn't even play. And so, you know, he was so
- 15:19Speaker 4: thankful to have that opportunity that we did give him.
- 15:21Speaker 4: But I think everybody wants to be wanted, right? And then,
- 15:25Speaker 4: you know, you're this zero-star recruit. have no attention coming
- 15:28Speaker 4: to high school. And all of a sudden the blue
- 15:30Speaker 4: bloods are calling you with a lot of dollar signs
- 15:33Speaker 4: behind it, right? A lot of zeros. Yes. And, but
- 15:36Speaker 4: at the end of the day, you know, the relationship
- 15:39Speaker 4: we built not only with him, but with his mother
- 15:41Speaker 4: as well. I mean, she was really involved in the process,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you know, of him coming here and our last conversation
- 15:48Speaker 4: we had before he decided to commit and come here.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I ended the phone call with, Hey, don't break my heart.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And I just hung up as fast as I could.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Didn't let him respond.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Oh, wow. That is a great line. Yes.
- 16:03Speaker 4: He still tells that story to this day, but, um,
- 16:05Speaker 4: but yeah, there was some psychological warfare behind that statement.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Don't break my heart. And then you just hung up.
- 16:14Speaker 1: You didn't give him a chance to respond. Did you
- 16:15Speaker 1: speak to him after? And were they trying to talk
- 16:17Speaker 1: to you with thinking you were still on the phone?
- 16:19Speaker 4: I mean, No, he called that night. Him and his
- 16:22Speaker 4: mom were around a campfire back at home in Austin
- 16:25Speaker 4: and I think had some time to process. It wasn't
- 16:28Speaker 4: just that, but I do think... That was a good
- 16:31Speaker 4: last thought for me to put in this. Guilt.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Coach, you've had great success at smaller schools. You mentioned
- 16:40Speaker 2: Incarnate Word. We talked about North Texas. What was that
- 16:44Speaker 2: jump like to Oklahoma State where now you get to
- 16:47Speaker 2: that building and you're like looking around and like, man,
- 16:49Speaker 2: the resources here are a hundred times what I've had
- 16:52Speaker 2: in the past.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Like right now you're sitting on some sort of throne.
- 16:55Speaker 3: That chair is amazing.
- 16:56Speaker 1: The whole background is amazing. They didn't have that at
- 16:58Speaker 1: other stops that you were on. I mean, what is
- 17:00Speaker 1: it like?
- 17:02Speaker 4: I think nowadays, you know, everybody gets fixated with the
- 17:06Speaker 4: amount of money that you have to pay your players,
- 17:08Speaker 4: which is a huge deal. Right. Obviously. And I hear
- 17:11Speaker 4: a bunch of coaches that complain week in, week out
- 17:14Speaker 4: about things they don't have. Right. And I told, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 4: when I was interviewing for this job with Chad Weiberg,
- 17:21Speaker 4: I said, listen, like, that's not me. That's not my personality.
- 17:24Speaker 4: The places I've been, you know, Incarnate word in North Texas,
- 17:27Speaker 4: like we didn't have much. And I've never complained about
- 17:30Speaker 4: things I didn't have. Try to maximize what we do have.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Talk about the positives. And then be able to go
- 17:37Speaker 4: and better the place, right? And so that doesn't mean
- 17:39Speaker 4: I don't want to raise more money. And so trying
- 17:41Speaker 4: to form great relationships now to be able to get,
- 17:44Speaker 4: you know, our NIL bucket to top tier in this
- 17:47Speaker 4: league is something that we're, we have some lofty goals
- 17:50Speaker 4: of being able to raise more money and be able
- 17:52Speaker 4: to build roster to sustain success for a long time.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And so, yeah, I mean, it's been super cool. But
- 17:59Speaker 4: but obviously, boom pickings in the stadium and, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 4: the indoor and the locker room and the spaces that
- 18:06Speaker 4: we have are top notch here.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Are you OK with where college football is at just
- 18:11Speaker 1: in terms of transfer portal, the players getting paid? It's
- 18:14Speaker 1: become more difficult to coach, I think, because your players
- 18:17Speaker 1: are constantly leaving.
- 18:18Speaker 3: The rosters are constantly changing. Do you like today's college football?
- 18:22Speaker 4: Yeah, there's been a lot made of how many new
- 18:24Speaker 4: players we have, you know, 90 something players, which is
- 18:27Speaker 4: a lot, but I'm actually used to it. You know,
- 18:31Speaker 4: I think we had 66 new players the first year
- 18:33Speaker 4: at North Texas. The second year we had 71. It's
- 18:36Speaker 4: almost normal to me. We brought 22 guys with us. So,
- 18:39Speaker 4: you know, if you go 90 minus 20, I mean,
- 18:41Speaker 4: you're around what I consider normal. And so I think
- 18:46Speaker 4: everything's just so expedited nowadays and, you know, you're trying
- 18:50Speaker 4: to build relationships and, and do those things really fast.
- 18:53Speaker 4: So I think being super intentional, realizing every team's going
- 18:57Speaker 4: to be a new team, not taking that for granted.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I think we have to be great teachers. You know, my,
- 19:03Speaker 4: my parent, my father was, was a English teacher. And
- 19:06Speaker 4: so I've been around teachers my whole entire life. And
- 19:09Speaker 4: I think that's what coaches do at, at its core.
- 19:12Speaker 4: And so, you know, I'm really proud of the way that,
- 19:15Speaker 4: that our coaches have kind of brought this group together.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Coach, was it a challenge following Mike Gundy, who was
- 19:21Speaker 2: at Oklahoma State for 21 years? I know his tenure
- 19:24Speaker 2: didn't end the best way there, but in Stillwater, he's
- 19:27Speaker 2: a legend around there.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all they know.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, something that I've embraced, right? And I
- 19:32Speaker 4: got to see that firsthand. You know, I played against
- 19:35Speaker 4: Coach Gundy as a player when he was coaching here
- 19:37Speaker 4: and I was able to coach against him a number
- 19:40Speaker 4: of times, right? And so just have the utmost respect
- 19:44Speaker 4: for Mike and what he was able to build here
- 19:46Speaker 4: and To be able to sustain it for so long
- 19:49Speaker 4: was something that that was so cool for me to see.
- 19:51Speaker 4: And then obviously, you know, I remember Spike Dykes, old
- 19:55Speaker 4: legendary Texas Tech head coach, told me long ago that
- 19:59Speaker 4: you're going to lose 10 percent of your supporters every
- 20:02Speaker 4: single year as a college head coach, no matter if
- 20:04Speaker 4: you win or lose. And it's just part of the gig. Right.
- 20:08Speaker 4: And so that's a quote that's always stuck in my
- 20:11Speaker 4: head and realizing. But I think people in Stillwater were
- 20:14Speaker 4: ready for something new, and they've embraced us with open arms,
- 20:18Speaker 4: and we have a lot of great energy. And I
- 20:20Speaker 4: think the home field advantage can be something huge for
- 20:23Speaker 4: us during the course of this year. And starting it
- 20:26Speaker 4: off with a bang and getting them excited week one,
- 20:29Speaker 4: you know, with the big win over Oregon, I think
- 20:31Speaker 4: can make this place really dangerous this year.
- 20:33Speaker 1: You don't become a college football coach, I don't think,
- 20:36Speaker 1: without being a big college football fan. So you know
- 20:38Speaker 1: the history of the sport. If I told you, I
- 20:40Speaker 1: don't know, 10 years ago, that 10 years from now,
- 20:43Speaker 1: Indiana would be on top of the sport, you would
- 20:45Speaker 1: have told me what?
- 20:48Speaker 4: You're absolutely crazy. Only if Bob Knight was still alive
- 20:53Speaker 4: and started coaching.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Football, right? But it's a good thing from this standpoint, right, Coach?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Like, Indiana doing it proves that anybody can do it, correct?
- 21:05Speaker 4: The parody is awesome. Right. And I think that's what
- 21:07Speaker 4: the NFL has done so good for so long. Right.
- 21:09Speaker 4: And I think you'll see us adopt a lot more
- 21:11Speaker 4: of the NFL rules. And as we get this thing
- 21:14Speaker 4: figured out and hopefully, you know, get some legislation done,
- 21:17Speaker 4: which looks like it's going to happen in the near future.
- 21:19Speaker 4: I think that's what makes it fun. It keeps it interesting.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It keeps the fans engaged right now. Will it sustain?
- 21:27Speaker 4: You know, I think it's going to be hard to
- 21:29Speaker 4: sustain for some of the smaller schools. And will you
- 21:32Speaker 4: see a break off? I mean, I think that'll happen
- 21:35Speaker 4: here probably in the next five years with the P4 schools.
- 21:39Speaker 4: And just because, you know, I just think it is
- 21:41Speaker 4: so hard. I've been at those schools, right? And to
- 21:44Speaker 4: be able to retain your players year in, year out
- 21:47Speaker 4: with the financial research you have, like you just can't
- 21:50Speaker 4: do it. And so I do think that it is
- 21:53Speaker 4: healthy right now. Obviously, it's so popular and the viewership
- 21:57Speaker 4: shows that. But I do think, you know, there are
- 22:00Speaker 4: some major changes coming down the pipeline.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Coach, you played college football at Texas Tech. If I
- 22:05Speaker 2: was doing a Mount Rushmore of my favorite college football
- 22:07Speaker 2: moments in my lifetime, the Michael Crabtree touchdown against Texas,
- 22:12Speaker 2: what was it like playing on some of those teams
- 22:14Speaker 2: with Mike Leach and Graham Harrell and that explosive offense,
- 22:18Speaker 2: which was kind of revolutionary for the time?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah, just so thankful for the opportunity that Mike gave
- 22:24Speaker 4: me to play, right? From a really small town, undersized kid,
- 22:28Speaker 4: Wes Welker kind of paved the way for us guys
- 22:31Speaker 4: at Texas Tech you know Danny Amendola and I were
- 22:34Speaker 4: the next guys that were in that lineage um but
- 22:38Speaker 4: um yeah it was just uh such an incredible experience
- 22:41Speaker 4: for me um Lubbock's right down the street from from
- 22:45Speaker 4: my hometown so for my family to be able to
- 22:47Speaker 4: watch that and to experience it and then um just
- 22:50Speaker 4: the coaches I was able to play under I mean
- 22:52Speaker 4: my position coach is when I was a player were
- 22:54Speaker 4: Dana horse and Sonny Dykes and Lincoln Riley. Right. So
- 22:57Speaker 4: I had those three men pouring into me is one
- 23:00Speaker 4: of the big reasons I wanted to become a coach. Right.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I was just around them and I was a gym
- 23:04Speaker 4: rat and I wanted to, to have all this knowledge
- 23:07Speaker 4: that they were able to give me. And so, uh,
- 23:10Speaker 4: just super thankful for that situation. Um, and then Mike
- 23:13Speaker 4: gives me my first full-time job at Washington state. Um,
- 23:17Speaker 4: And so really, you know, I owe him every opportunity
- 23:20Speaker 4: I've been blessed with in this great sport of college football.
- 23:24Speaker 3: How'd you feel about the nickname, The Elf?
- 23:30Speaker 4: Didn't love it at first. It was pretty organic how
- 23:35Speaker 4: it happened.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Of course, yes.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Mike making it happen in a team meeting and telling
- 23:42Speaker 4: me I was so small, only, only small magical creatures
- 23:45Speaker 4: could make a play like this. And we'll call him, he'll,
- 23:49Speaker 4: he'll be known as the elf from now on. But
- 23:51Speaker 4: the cool that, you know, he put, so after everybody
- 23:54Speaker 4: started calling me the elf, um, it caught on. And then, uh,
- 23:58Speaker 4: that Thursday, um, which I think we're number two in
- 24:01Speaker 4: the country at this time. Um, I had a, a
- 24:04Speaker 4: green uniform in my, uh, in my locker so green
- 24:08Speaker 4: tights green shorts green jersey and taped elf ears on
- 24:11Speaker 4: the outside of my helmet and i went to his
- 24:14Speaker 4: office and i had all the stuff with me i'm
- 24:16Speaker 4: like mike like this is literally like what are we
- 24:18Speaker 4: doing right now like i'm not wearing this for practice
- 24:20Speaker 4: and he looked at me and he's like if you
- 24:22Speaker 4: want to play this week you're gonna wear that And
- 24:25Speaker 4: so for the next four weeks, every Thursday, you know,
- 24:29Speaker 4: we'd be watching film. It's serious being prepared, getting prepared,
- 24:33Speaker 4: you know, for Oklahoma. If we win, we're going to
- 24:35Speaker 4: the national championship. There I am running around with this
- 24:37Speaker 4: little green outfit on and everybody just coaching like this
- 24:40Speaker 4: is normal.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Mike Leach was a, he was a friend of mine.
- 24:44Speaker 1: He was on with me and Leviton all the time.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I love him.
- 24:47Speaker 4: National treasure, wasn't it?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Oh, a national treasure. Great sense of humor, dry sense
- 24:51Speaker 1: of humor, but funny. You had to understand him, but
- 24:54Speaker 1: he was so intelligent and so ahead of his time,
- 24:56Speaker 1: wasn't he, Coach?
- 24:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and too, like, I tell people this story all
- 25:00Speaker 4: the time. When we first got to Washington State, we
- 25:02Speaker 4: were installing the offense, and this was when he was
- 25:07Speaker 4: writing the book on Geronimo, and so I sat right
- 25:10Speaker 4: next to Mike in meetings and I had to run
- 25:12Speaker 4: the computer. And so I show up one day and
- 25:15Speaker 4: this man, you know, who nobody knew who he was,
- 25:17Speaker 4: was sitting in my chair. And so I'm just sitting
- 25:19Speaker 4: there and Mike's like, yeah, go sit somewhere else. And
- 25:22Speaker 4: so this is one of the world's leading experts on
- 25:26Speaker 4: Geronimo that's going to spend three weeks with us while
- 25:29Speaker 4: he's writing a book. So we're installing. Mike had two
- 25:32Speaker 4: legal pads, only wrote on legal pads. He's a lawyer
- 25:34Speaker 4: by trade. One said Geronimo at the top, one said football.
- 25:37Speaker 3: That's it, not just football.
- 25:40Speaker 4: And so we'd be in there installing and then, you know,
- 25:43Speaker 4: something would spark a conversation up. He'd slide the Geronimo
- 25:46Speaker 4: thing over and he'd just be talking to this guy.
- 25:47Speaker 4: And everybody's just sitting there like, I mean, wasting all
- 25:50Speaker 4: of our time as they're talking about. So we made
- 25:53Speaker 4: a pack as a staff because we wasted so much
- 25:56Speaker 4: time that spring listening to these stories that we would
- 25:59Speaker 4: never read the Geronimo book. So that's, if I see it,
- 26:02Speaker 4: I won't look at it. I have a bunch of
- 26:04Speaker 4: Mike's literature in my office. Geronimo is not, whatever that
- 26:08Speaker 4: book is, is not in my office.
- 26:10Speaker 1: But knowing him the way you do, that's why we
- 26:11Speaker 1: like to have him on so much because he would
- 26:13Speaker 1: just take the conversation anywhere and was comfortable doing so.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Yes. You had no clue, but yeah, super intelligent, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 4: super bright and just had so much what I called
- 26:23Speaker 4: useless information. Like there were so many subjects that he
- 26:26Speaker 4: had so much information on. You're like, we'd fact check
- 26:29Speaker 4: him all the time. Like there ain't no way he
- 26:31Speaker 4: knows what he's talking about. Sure enough.
- 26:32Speaker 3: He was right.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:33Speaker 3: He was right. We'll get you out of here in
- 26:36Speaker 3: a second.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I don't think people know this, Uh, you coach Patrick
- 26:39Speaker 1: Mahomes when he was at Texas tech. Uh, did you,
- 26:42Speaker 1: was it possible to see, to envision that he would
- 26:45Speaker 1: turn into this? I know you probably thought he was
- 26:47Speaker 1: going to be good, but did you think he would
- 26:48Speaker 1: be like all time?
- 26:49Speaker 4: Great. Good. No, I mean, just the one thing that
- 26:54Speaker 4: was different about Patrick. And I think we see all the,
- 26:56Speaker 4: like we made this highlight clip of all these no
- 26:59Speaker 4: look passes, you know, left-handed passes. I mean, the things
- 27:02Speaker 4: he didn't practice were just, you know, it puts you
- 27:05Speaker 4: in all, all the time. Um, But the one thing
- 27:07Speaker 4: that people just don't talk about in general because it
- 27:10Speaker 4: is kind of backyard football and he makes all these
- 27:12Speaker 4: crazy plays is like how intelligent Patrick actually is. And
- 27:15Speaker 4: I remember Andy Reid coming in and did a board
- 27:19Speaker 4: session with him. So, you know, they send him the playbook,
- 27:21Speaker 4: let him study it for a week, and they're going
- 27:23Speaker 4: to come in and quiz him on the board. And
- 27:26Speaker 4: me and Coach Kingsbury were sitting in Coach Kingsbury's office
- 27:29Speaker 4: and Andy walks out after they did this board session.
- 27:31Speaker 4: And Andy said, hey, I've been doing this for 30 years.
- 27:34Speaker 4: That's the best session like I've ever been around. And
- 27:37Speaker 4: so it just speaks volume just about just how smart
- 27:40Speaker 4: Patrick is and how much time he puts into it.
- 27:43Speaker 4: So you always saw the work ethic. So, I mean,
- 27:45Speaker 4: do you know he's going to, you know, win all
- 27:47Speaker 4: these MVPs and Super Bowls? It's hard to do that.
- 27:50Speaker 4: You need a team around you. You need a great
- 27:52Speaker 4: play caller like Andy Reid. Like, I mean, he got
- 27:54Speaker 4: into the perfect situation. You got to sit for a year.
- 27:57Speaker 4: So no, didn't know. But does it surprise me? Absolutely not.
- 28:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I know these guys and well, I like to think
- 28:05Speaker 1: I know myself.
- 28:05Speaker 3: We are Cowboy fans now, okay?
- 28:08Speaker 1: We love you. We love this team. We want to
- 28:10Speaker 1: see continued success. In fact, I'm thinking we come out
- 28:13Speaker 1: to Stillwater perhaps, you know, come to a game.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Come on, baby. We'd love to have you. Sit up
- 28:19Speaker 4: in my suite.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Yes.
- 28:21Speaker 4: We got a bunch of– hope you like uh banquet
- 28:25Speaker 4: beers yellow bellies we call them here in oklahoma and
- 28:29Speaker 4: um done but you guys are more than welcome anytime
- 28:31Speaker 4: you want to.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Come all right uh can we do a show from
- 28:33Speaker 1: the uh from the stadium yes we could do.
- 28:35Speaker 4: That a thousand a thousand percent oh my god we're in.
- 28:37Speaker 1: All right i just want to sit in that chair
- 28:39Speaker 1: yeah i just want and can i use that chair
- 28:41Speaker 1: in that background if you don't mind please.
- 28:43Speaker 4: It's not as cool on the other side of the
- 28:45Speaker 4: camera there's a bunch of stuff going on but the
- 28:48Speaker 4: the production is is uh It's really nice.
- 28:51Speaker 3: All right, Coach.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Halloween here? I mean, it looks like Halloween, right?
- 28:54Speaker 3: Yes, it does.
- 28:55Speaker 4: We'll put some ghosts and some pumpkins back there.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It looks like the coolest house on the block for Halloween. Yes,
- 29:00Speaker 3: that's what it looks like.
- 29:04Speaker 1: All right, it's a date, Coach. We will look at
- 29:06Speaker 1: the schedule. We'll figure out a game. We'll make a
- 29:08Speaker 1: trip to Stillwater. We're looking forward to it. Congratulations on
- 29:12Speaker 1: the big win. Continued success. Good luck this weekend. Thank
- 29:14Speaker 1: you for doing this, Coach.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Appreciate you guys. Have a great weekend.
- 29:17Speaker 3: All right, you too.
