- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening Hunt podcast, you
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are
- 0:22Speaker 1: the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:36Speaker 1: this is ah. This is something I never wanted to happen.
- 0:39Speaker 1: This was never supposed to be part of the plan.
- 0:44Speaker 1: This is a this is a live it's a live
- 0:46Speaker 1: recorded show. It was meant to be that way all
- 0:52Speaker 1: all ever? Did I mean? I did a couple of
- 0:54Speaker 1: other things, But the primary thing I have done over
- 0:56Speaker 1: the years is argue against people who have tried to
- 0:59Speaker 1: convince me of all the benefits and ease that would
- 1:04Speaker 1: come if you would just record the interviews over Skype
- 1:10Speaker 1: and ship like that. And I've always said it just
- 1:14Speaker 1: violated my artistic sensibility. I just resisted it against all comers.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But but in the end, I in the end, I
- 1:27Speaker 1: was defeated by COVID nineteen. So here we are recording
- 1:37Speaker 1: the show, not live. I am so close to cal
- 1:43Speaker 1: I can smell them but we can't be together. I
- 1:50Speaker 1: can't silence our phones. Cats and dogs living together, anarchy,
- 1:57Speaker 1: mass hysteria. Cal's so close. I could smell him, but
- 2:01Speaker 1: I can I can't touch him. He's over in his
- 2:05Speaker 1: his in his garage. Janice not as close, but I
- 2:10Speaker 1: could still kind of smell him, locked up in his home,
- 2:17Speaker 1: the big moose skull from Alaska looking down upon him. Uh,
- 2:22Speaker 1: which makes you feel especially this and his cow is
- 2:24Speaker 1: just robbed. Cal, can you tell everybody about getting robbed? Oh? Man? Um? Yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: So folks broke into yes, thieves, not folks. Thieves bra
- 2:42Speaker 1: broke into my truck, open my garage door about two
- 2:46Speaker 1: ft with my garage door opener, and uh, I can
- 2:52Speaker 1: I ask you real quick about that? So they did
- 2:54Speaker 1: like they to look to reduce noise. They just open
- 2:59Speaker 1: enough to crawl under. Yeah, reduced noise and and you
- 3:03Speaker 1: know everything's very well lit here hours a day. So
- 3:09Speaker 1: maybe it was to keep the uniformity from somebody driving
- 3:15Speaker 1: down the street because the garage doors are so tall.
- 3:18Speaker 1: But just to paint the picture. Cal lives in a
- 3:22Speaker 1: Cal lives and a live work spots. So he's got
- 3:25Speaker 1: a big, huge garage and on top of that sits
- 3:29Speaker 1: his house, his home. Yeah, one bedroom apartment, so that
- 3:34Speaker 1: maybe even giving these folks way too much credit. Um.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You know, my little sister's a detective now. I like
- 3:44Speaker 1: to call her a dick uh down in Denver and
- 3:49Speaker 1: I was asking her about dick in Denver. Uh what
- 3:56Speaker 1: her thoughts were, and uh, you know, I have m all.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I got fancy new steel gas power chainsaw, one of
- 4:08Speaker 1: thes no no. So there is like this chainsaw right
- 4:13Speaker 1: next to an eight hundred dollar chainsaw. And they took
- 4:17Speaker 1: the two dollar like hedge trimmer. And I was asking
- 4:22Speaker 1: my little sister about that, and she was very serious.
- 4:25Speaker 1: She's kind of a serious kid. Hard to call her.
- 4:28Speaker 1: She's a serious dick um. And she's like, well, did
- 4:33Speaker 1: it have like a nice package or did it have
- 4:37Speaker 1: like bright colors to it? I said, well, the lettering
- 4:44Speaker 1: is was really bright. You know, it's brand new packaging.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And she's like, yeah, right, and that's called math. It's
- 4:50Speaker 1: like anything that's like shiny and good looking. And you
- 4:55Speaker 1: started looking around the garage and and uh, yeah, it
- 5:02Speaker 1: was just like severe severe a d D where something
- 5:07Speaker 1: would be picked up and moved and put on the
- 5:10Speaker 1: floor and then in that spot. You'd look around and
- 5:14Speaker 1: be like, oh, from here, they grabbed this and moved it,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and they yeah, the So they piled up a bunch
- 5:25Speaker 1: of guns. You know, I never got around to building
- 5:28Speaker 1: the guns safe that I was going to build, or
- 5:32Speaker 1: the safe room for the guns that I was going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to build, um, but nothing was out. But they found
- 5:40Speaker 1: where I have all the guns, and they just they
- 5:42Speaker 1: brought him out and stacked them. And then I have
- 5:45Speaker 1: a brand new weather be eighteen I UM in the
- 5:50Speaker 1: box that I was gonna mount some turkey sights on,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and that was laying on the couch next my desk
- 6:02Speaker 1: down here in my garage office where I was doing
- 6:05Speaker 1: all my taxes and trying to refinance my home, and
- 6:10Speaker 1: where that shotgun was placed is where my whole file
- 6:16Speaker 1: of all of my sensitive financial information had been resting.
- 6:21Speaker 1: So they had picked up the brand new shotgun, saw
- 6:24Speaker 1: that file, put the shotgun down, picked up the file
- 6:28Speaker 1: through that in my bag um in order to use.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So they used my YETI backpack and in this black
- 6:36Speaker 1: hole Patagonia Duffle that I've had for fifteen years, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: to like grab stuff and throw stuff in him, and
- 6:45Speaker 1: that black hole Duffel bag. They dumped out several thousand
- 6:51Speaker 1: dollars worth of fly fishing gear in order to utilize
- 6:55Speaker 1: the bag to put in uh maybe a hundred dollars
- 7:04Speaker 1: worth of pawnshop tools in that bag. So your your
- 7:11Speaker 1: sister thinks it's math. I think it's I'm putting together
- 7:15Speaker 1: a little profile. I like it. They gotta they gotta
- 7:21Speaker 1: hedge at their house that looks rough. Um, they're handy
- 7:27Speaker 1: man and they got a background in accounting. Uh, they
- 7:35Speaker 1: got a sack full like many many. You know, we
- 7:42Speaker 1: always talked about like what the hell do you do
- 7:43Speaker 1: with all cavories? Well, I've just been cleaning them up
- 7:48Speaker 1: and chucking them in. Uh it's not a Crown royal bag,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but you know, like those little velvety booze bags. Um,
- 7:56Speaker 1: for freaking ever, they stole those. They took those. Also
- 8:03Speaker 1: a couple of arrow heads that I had sitting there,
- 8:05Speaker 1: some buffalo teeth. And I felt really bad for the
- 8:08Speaker 1: cop right because he's like, what's missing? And what he
- 8:12Speaker 1: meant to say is tell me if any guns are missing,
- 8:17Speaker 1: But he just said what's missing? And it's to am
- 8:22Speaker 1: and I'm walking around my guard my garage, being like
- 8:25Speaker 1: son of a batch, and he's like, okay, what like
- 8:28Speaker 1: my buffalo teeth. He's like okay, And I'm like, oh,
- 8:32Speaker 1: my arrowheads and my elk teeth and uh. And then
- 8:36Speaker 1: I turned around and he's writing this stuff down like
- 8:41Speaker 1: out of a sense of duty, not out of a
- 8:44Speaker 1: sense of justice or anything, right, And I'm like, oh sorry,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and I'm like look around. I'm like, you know what,
- 8:52Speaker 1: they they got a couple of whether it be over
- 8:58Speaker 1: and undershotguns that I had had that are like our
- 9:02Speaker 1: office shotguns, you know. Uh. And I had had him
- 9:05Speaker 1: here for one of our last hunts of the year
- 9:07Speaker 1: and and clean them up and had him sitting in
- 9:09Speaker 1: the garage or sitting in the gun room, and uh,
- 9:13Speaker 1: they had taken those. Those are the only two shotguns
- 9:15Speaker 1: that they made it out the door with. Um. But
- 9:18Speaker 1: they stole my truck. They grabbed my spare set of keys.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It was gone for all of five minutes. They drove
- 9:28Speaker 1: it a tenth of a mile with the stuff, must
- 9:32Speaker 1: have thrown it in wherever they had parked their car.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And the you know, the the Bozeman p D had
- 9:41Speaker 1: my truck. Like two officers show up and they're like, hey,
- 9:46Speaker 1: what's going on? And then immediately one of the officers
- 9:49Speaker 1: like grabs his like you see on TV, like grabs
- 9:52Speaker 1: his radio and he's like run, runs out of here.
- 9:56Speaker 1: And you know, fifteen packs later, they're like, yeah, they
- 10:01Speaker 1: got your truck. I'm like, oh, gay, So go over
- 10:05Speaker 1: to the truck and there's the two Weatherby shotguns in
- 10:08Speaker 1: the back. But they got So here's here's the biggest,
- 10:15Speaker 1: like the biggest takeaway from me um lock your guns up.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Oh like that's things like the stuff that was locked up.
- 10:24Speaker 1: But you know, in my mind it is locked up.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But yeah, Ratt, you need to better job of locking
- 10:31Speaker 1: your stuff up. How many feet were you from the
- 10:34Speaker 1: burglars while they were burglarizing you if you could bore
- 10:38Speaker 1: a hole through the ceiling about eight ft? Uh. But
- 10:43Speaker 1: so here's here's the crazy takeaway right home defense. A
- 10:49Speaker 1: year ago, when I move into this place, I make
- 10:52Speaker 1: the decision, no, I mean whatever, judge me Um, I
- 11:03Speaker 1: already have to put a ten millimeter pistol and a
- 11:08Speaker 1: three fifty seven pistol in in in cases but like
- 11:12Speaker 1: carry cases right basic essentially right next to my bed.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And I made that decision to where I was like,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you don't have kids, so go ahead, and I was like,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but still safe, you know, like not my nephew is
- 11:28Speaker 1: not gonna come over here and have any way of
- 11:30Speaker 1: accessing those things. So, um, ice, keep a pistol next
- 11:35Speaker 1: to my bed. You can't do that when you got
- 11:38Speaker 1: people running around your house. But myself, um but you know,
- 11:42Speaker 1: in my mind, I'm like, okay, home defense, and why
- 11:45Speaker 1: would I just have all my guns downstairs when I'm upstairs.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So I hear stuff going on outside and I'm like, God, no,
- 11:54Speaker 1: that's nothing, but I have turkey stock going on on
- 11:57Speaker 1: the stove, and my guy, but better talk check that
- 12:01Speaker 1: turkey stock since I'm awake anyway. And then I get
- 12:04Speaker 1: up and I hear this is at two forty am.
- 12:11Speaker 1: You had let me get this straight. So it's two
- 12:13Speaker 1: forty am, and you like wake up and realize that
- 12:16Speaker 1: you want to check your turkey stock. Well, something wakes
- 12:20Speaker 1: me up right, and I'll kind of listen. I'm like, oh,
- 12:24Speaker 1: this kind of a noisy area town anyway, and you
- 12:27Speaker 1: kind of get used to some of the noises, but
- 12:31Speaker 1: also there is something like that's not right. So I'm like, oh,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I got a turkey stock on the stove. I'm gonna
- 12:40Speaker 1: go check the turkey stock and making about five ft
- 12:43Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh my god, somebody per Son's or
- 12:49Speaker 1: a person is downstairs in my home, like in my home,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and right next to me are those two pistols. And
- 12:57Speaker 1: I know as any turn in any scenario would know
- 13:02Speaker 1: if I step out onto my deck, I will be
- 13:07Speaker 1: looking at at least one of these people. Yeah, And
- 13:11Speaker 1: it is at that moment that I'm like, do not
- 13:16Speaker 1: grab that pistol because you will kill that person. Oh.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I feel like I would have thought something different, yeah, man,
- 13:27Speaker 1: but I just absolutely no, Like from thea jillion times
- 13:31Speaker 1: I've been in the woods, at this point, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 1: when you're like, well, let me just look at it
- 13:36Speaker 1: through the scope, like things die when you do that.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And and at that point I was like, man, I
- 13:52Speaker 1: don't want to kill anybody tonight, right or wrong. I mean,
- 13:56Speaker 1: that's that's the process that went through my head. Now
- 14:00Speaker 1: you is you didn't have um man, you were just
- 14:06Speaker 1: overcome with just immediate feelings of just wanting vengeance for
- 14:12Speaker 1: them violating your your your place, violating your sanc, your
- 14:16Speaker 1: your sanctity. So like I said, like the door to
- 14:22Speaker 1: the apartment part of this place is wide open, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: so there's one door separating the garage from upstairs, and uh.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Instead of going out on the deck, I'm like, Okay,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna go down the stairs. And at this point,
- 14:42Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with the cops and just to
- 14:45Speaker 1: let you know, like how fast this happened, I'm on
- 14:48Speaker 1: the phone with dispatch for like thirty seconds and I
- 14:53Speaker 1: can hear sirens in the background m hm and they
- 15:00Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, I gotta go downstairs, and uh,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna pound my feet on the way down the
- 15:07Speaker 1: stairs and get these folks out of my garage. Um.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And then I make I don't even make it to
- 15:13Speaker 1: my stairs, which is hard to do because it's such
- 15:15Speaker 1: a small apartment, and I hear the unmistakable sound of
- 15:21Speaker 1: my door, my vehicle door opening and closing, and my
- 15:25Speaker 1: vehicle starting like everybody knows the sound of their truck.
- 15:29Speaker 1: And I was like, oh shit, yeah, You're like, how
- 15:33Speaker 1: could that be because I'm up here exactly exactly and
- 15:38Speaker 1: uh yeah. And then I was just like, oh ah,
- 15:44Speaker 1: you lost this round? Ye would you have would you
- 15:49Speaker 1: have gone in their guns? Ablaze? And Johnnie Well, I
- 15:53Speaker 1: was just thinking maybe a couple of warning shots, maybe
- 15:55Speaker 1: shot the tires out, you know as they're pulling away. No,
- 15:59Speaker 1: I'm getting um, warning shots in the middle of town
- 16:03Speaker 1: probably aren't a good idea either. So no, I wouldn't
- 16:06Speaker 1: have gone in their guns ablazing. UM, I mean, what
- 16:09Speaker 1: you're gonna You gonna murder some guys because they stole
- 16:12Speaker 1: a chainsaw in your passport. So here's the thing. Like,
- 16:19Speaker 1: when I came down Sunday morning, it wouldn't be it
- 16:23Speaker 1: wouldn't be murder. Not that I slept at all, But
- 16:28Speaker 1: Sunday I'm down in the garage like really taken stock
- 16:31Speaker 1: of what is gone, and they have two of my
- 16:36Speaker 1: other bags, like chocked full of stuff that they didn't
- 16:39Speaker 1: make it out the door with. UM. So I'm going
- 16:43Speaker 1: through that and seeing what what they grabbed. UM. And
- 16:46Speaker 1: they grabbed uh A thing of rubber bands, UH, old
- 16:51Speaker 1: set of first light suspenders, UH. A couple of head lamps,
- 16:56Speaker 1: one of which does not work anymore. You know, things
- 16:59Speaker 1: that I had in tended to return to the manufacturer
- 17:02Speaker 1: for warranty purposes. UM. A saws all that is pushing
- 17:09Speaker 1: twenty years old that I literally dug out of a
- 17:12Speaker 1: dumpster and catch him A dull drill with batteries that
- 17:20Speaker 1: don't hold the charge anymore. That I had finally been like,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna call those guys from Milwaukee and see if
- 17:28Speaker 1: I can't get a discount on a new drill. And
- 17:31Speaker 1: all I could think is, had I stood out on
- 17:35Speaker 1: my deck and shot one of those dudes, and like
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm saying, I know for a fact, like I would
- 17:42Speaker 1: have stepped out there and been staring at those guys
- 17:45Speaker 1: eight feet on the angle. Yeah, but you could have great,
- 17:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of gray area between doing nothing and
- 17:53Speaker 1: shooting us someone. You could have said, uh you know,
- 17:56Speaker 1: uh maybe like stick them up, oh man, yeah, yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 1: who knows who? That might have come to my mind
- 18:05Speaker 1: had I shot one of those dudes and the cops like, okay, yeah, clear,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you know, self defense, got it, you know, castle doctor
- 18:13Speaker 1: and all that stuff. But then you'd get to read
- 18:15Speaker 1: the bottom online and you'd find out about his mom
- 18:18Speaker 1: and uh yeah, and by the way, here's your uh
- 18:22Speaker 1: saws all that you dug out of a dumpster and
- 18:25Speaker 1: that in circular sawce uh that uh you got for
- 18:30Speaker 1: twenty bucks at a pawn shop and uh, you know
- 18:35Speaker 1: doesn't work. Here's that drill. It doesn't work. Here's your
- 18:38Speaker 1: elk T you know. Um, oh yeah, officer, I may
- 18:43Speaker 1: have fibbed a little bit that wasn't an authentic Indian arrowhead.
- 18:47Speaker 1: That's a reproduction. You know. Like I understand, man, I
- 18:52Speaker 1: understand all that. But I also know that, UM, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I don't think that these into visuals had any It's
- 19:01Speaker 1: not like you're dealing with children who don't understand right
- 19:04Speaker 1: from wrong. You're dealing with people who have made a
- 19:06Speaker 1: conscious decision two steal your stuff and and and then
- 19:14Speaker 1: potentially put you in in at risk. Oh I know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: I know, and it had that. That's why I was
- 19:22Speaker 1: kind of like stuck between a rock and hard place because, um,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I like I was like, you know, somebody starts coming
- 19:32Speaker 1: up the stairs to my apartment, it's going to be
- 19:34Speaker 1: a very very different story very quick. Um. But you
- 19:41Speaker 1: know that that didn't happen. And the other thing is
- 19:45Speaker 1: like when I heard him start moving out of the
- 19:47Speaker 1: garage is when I was like, shoot, I gotta get
- 19:50Speaker 1: down there. Little did I know that they had the
- 19:54Speaker 1: keys of my truck and they were jumping in my
- 19:56Speaker 1: truck at the time. Um. But when I had at
- 20:01Speaker 1: that point you know, I'm on the phone with the cops,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and I actually had like a little more reassurance that
- 20:10Speaker 1: they're in probably the only extended cab eight foot bed
- 20:15Speaker 1: tundra in the state of Montana during quarantine. At two am.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I'm like, they stay in that truck. These guys are
- 20:26Speaker 1: gonna get caught, you know. So, And I was like,
- 20:29Speaker 1: do I drop my phone and so I can run
- 20:32Speaker 1: out of here in my bare feet and chase my
- 20:35Speaker 1: truck on foot? Like what are the better odds? You know?
- 20:38Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure we'll get a ga jillion people
- 20:42Speaker 1: telling me exactly what I should have done, but yeah,
- 20:45Speaker 1: that's what I did. You're you're more mature than I am. Um,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think because when I've had stuff stolen, I just
- 20:53Speaker 1: fixate on I fixate for a long time on the
- 20:57Speaker 1: vengeance and I and I, oh, these elaborate vengeance scenarios
- 21:02Speaker 1: to play out in my mind. Dude, you've been in
- 21:05Speaker 1: my place. I have hatchets and and hand forged hammers
- 21:09Speaker 1: and all sorts of stuff laying on every surface upstairs.
- 21:12Speaker 1: It's all for vengeance. I haven't been sleeping since has happened,
- 21:17Speaker 1: because all I'm thinking about is like I would love
- 21:21Speaker 1: to take that hammer and find that guy. Yeah. How
- 21:24Speaker 1: that turkey stock? How that wind up turned out? Oh? Beautiful,
- 21:28Speaker 1: nice and clear not cloudy? So I purposely because I
- 21:35Speaker 1: always feel like wild game stock. Can you have to
- 21:39Speaker 1: reduce it so much to get like a rich stock? Um,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I purposely only strained the turkey stock, like with a
- 21:51Speaker 1: rough strain. Mhm uh So it's like when you're unfiltered.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I p a s. They're hazy, I p a are Johnnie. Um,
- 22:02Speaker 1: so it's you speaking, but it's not. Yeah, I mean
- 22:11Speaker 1: so it's it's a little bit cloudier than than you
- 22:14Speaker 1: would think. But I did that on purpose to see
- 22:16Speaker 1: how that runs. But can it works to decant it
- 22:21Speaker 1: now and then to get it clarified? And then there's
- 22:23Speaker 1: another trick they do, which is uh oh on that second,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I told you someone to be crying on Matt, What
- 22:33Speaker 1: are you crying about? Yea? Where was I? Oh? Clarifying stock? Yeah? Yeah,
- 22:57Speaker 1: you can to clarify that stuff. You can d can't it?
- 23:01Speaker 1: Like just let it settle and then pour off the top.
- 23:04Speaker 1: But there's this other thing I've done. It's an old
- 23:06Speaker 1: timey method. Is um you'd use like like egg cracking
- 23:12Speaker 1: egg in there to clarify it. I don't even I
- 23:17Speaker 1: don't even remember the details. I remember doing it, I have.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So my next step is, I I've been hoarding tongues
- 23:27Speaker 1: like you wouldn't believe, all sorts of tongues in every freezer. Um,
- 23:35Speaker 1: and I'm gonna do a couple of big corning batches
- 23:38Speaker 1: of tongue. And I have this old timey uh you know,
- 23:44Speaker 1: preserving book here in the garage miraculously didn't get stolen
- 23:50Speaker 1: um that I'm gonna They probably discussed it exactly. They're like,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I don't know, man, what do you guys think old
- 23:59Speaker 1: timey preserve? And should we grab it? Yeah? No, Um,
- 24:06Speaker 1: I don't want that new shotgun in the box. We'd
- 24:08Speaker 1: have to put it together. Nobody wants to deal with that. Um. Yeah,
- 24:13Speaker 1: So I guess that's the next deal. So I I
- 24:17Speaker 1: I don't know. I think the turkey stock leaving it
- 24:21Speaker 1: a little little cloudy, I think is gonna work out good.
- 24:24Speaker 1: And then I got I did a giant batch of
- 24:30Speaker 1: all my elk bones and a couple of mule de
- 24:32Speaker 1: your bones that I had in the freezer. Uh that
- 24:35Speaker 1: as soon as we're done, all run through the strainer
- 24:37Speaker 1: and and can that today too, Well, that's good that
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're staying uh, you're you're being uh, you're staying active
- 24:46Speaker 1: over there. Uh like the quickly can I quickly add
- 24:49Speaker 1: about the clarifying stock of course? Yeah? Well the egg
- 24:54Speaker 1: thing is you you just added some beat some egg
- 24:57Speaker 1: whites and mix it in there and then let it
- 25:01Speaker 1: cook together. Remember doing that, and it like it buying
- 25:04Speaker 1: in the the the impurities like bind up in the
- 25:09Speaker 1: albumen or something. Yeah, basically when when you then let
- 25:13Speaker 1: it settle and you take it off the heat, like
- 25:16Speaker 1: you're saying that the stiffened egg whites or what's called
- 25:21Speaker 1: the egg raft um will so we'll grab that um
- 25:26Speaker 1: stuff and you just basically take that out um and
- 25:32Speaker 1: still run it through you know, sieve with a damp
- 25:35Speaker 1: cheese cloth. But I was gonna also say that I
- 25:38Speaker 1: always felt like that that one of the number one
- 25:40Speaker 1: rules for preventing cloudy stock is that you're you need
- 25:44Speaker 1: to be careful about not ripping stock too hard while
- 25:48Speaker 1: you're cooking it. Everything agitated and stirs it all up. Yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 1: you just got it slow and low. But you know
- 25:55Speaker 1: I used to I used to judge a man stock
- 25:58Speaker 1: by its clarity or cloudiness. But then I realized it
- 26:01Speaker 1: just doesn't matter. Man, it's I think it's aesthetics. Maybe
- 26:04Speaker 1: someone will counter that and tell me it's not aesthetics.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I think it's just aesthetics. Um, because it is gorgeous.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I mean it is. There's a bitterness that comes with
- 26:14Speaker 1: the cloudiness. Um. I wanted to I'd like to explore this,
- 26:19Speaker 1: but I I wind up not putting a whole lot
- 26:21Speaker 1: of attention into it. I thought it just as looks
- 26:24Speaker 1: when people used to make gela and stuff. You want
- 26:26Speaker 1: to be nice and clear, not cloudy. Uh. In terms
- 26:29Speaker 1: of cow, In terms of COVID nineteen and Cal getting
- 26:34Speaker 1: robbed and Cal not taking any cracks at the burglars
- 26:38Speaker 1: with his pistol, it has been interesting for me to see, Um, well, one,
- 26:46Speaker 1: this reaches across all, you know, all aspects of our
- 26:50Speaker 1: American existence and what we're gonna talk about a handful
- 26:54Speaker 1: of ways in which, like in the the outdoors world,
- 26:58Speaker 1: the world we deal in, there's impacts from COVID nineteen.
- 27:02Speaker 1: But we're gonna explore some of this, but the implications
- 27:05Speaker 1: of the pandemic, I mean touch every aspect of of
- 27:11Speaker 1: American life UM. And that certainly isn't limited to America
- 27:16Speaker 1: every for for you know, every aspect of global life. UM.
- 27:21Speaker 1: And it has felt in a lot of ways even
- 27:24Speaker 1: just in the world in which the world that we
- 27:26Speaker 1: deal with here on the show around the Outdoors that
- 27:28Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about some of the a little bit
- 27:31Speaker 1: of that coming up here and thinking about cal getting
- 27:43Speaker 1: robbed and whether or not you go out and take
- 27:46Speaker 1: a crack at the guy. UM. It's like illustrates some
- 27:53Speaker 1: kind of like interesting aspects of our own psychology and
- 27:59Speaker 1: the psychology of others around how you imagine a situation
- 28:04Speaker 1: like this playing out, and that so many people, especially
- 28:08Speaker 1: people that I view as being like peers of mine
- 28:11Speaker 1: and like minded individuals, sort of immediately go to this
- 28:15Speaker 1: place of go to this kind of last man standing
- 28:20Speaker 1: mentality where you're gonna get armed up UM in order
- 28:25Speaker 1: to I don't know what, UM, repel your neighbors if
- 28:32Speaker 1: they come for food, like like, I don't really know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and I feel it like and I understand that you
- 28:37Speaker 1: want to have this sense of that you want to
- 28:39Speaker 1: hunker in in stockpile and defend, but I also wish
- 28:44Speaker 1: that there was more of a knee jerk reaction towards
- 28:47Speaker 1: just going towards being, um, getting prepared to be supportive
- 28:55Speaker 1: of your neighbors and community. I need to prepare to
- 28:59Speaker 1: support my neighbors in community. I mean a lot of
- 29:02Speaker 1: people feel that way. But it's also there's also this
- 29:04Speaker 1: pull that makes you want to get really insular man um,
- 29:08Speaker 1: you know, to get maybe you're supportive of your neighbors
- 29:12Speaker 1: and community and family, of course, always your family, but
- 29:16Speaker 1: then you have in your mind too that there's like
- 29:19Speaker 1: this last ditch thing, you know, and that you'll have
- 29:23Speaker 1: plenty of food, you'll have water, you'll be able to
- 29:26Speaker 1: defend your home. Um, if that structure that you're trying
- 29:31Speaker 1: to simultaneously simultaneously be supportive of were to collapse, it
- 29:39Speaker 1: all has jumbled around in my head right now. Um,
- 29:43Speaker 1: it's not fun. It's not a fun thing to think about. No,
- 29:47Speaker 1: it's it's weird and I've done you know, like so
- 29:52Speaker 1: I'm I'm yeah, it is. It's a jumbled around my
- 29:56Speaker 1: head right because I'm like, boy, all of my meat
- 30:01Speaker 1: is in the freezer. So you know, I went over
- 30:04Speaker 1: install your big gass Western dehydrator. May I haven't returned it. No, uh,
- 30:12Speaker 1: may not that thing rips. You can do some cool
- 30:14Speaker 1: stuff with that thing. Um. But I took an unbelievable
- 30:21Speaker 1: amount of meat and reduced it to about eight pounds
- 30:26Speaker 1: of shelf stable meat. Yeah. Um, do you got a
- 30:30Speaker 1: generator over there? No, I don't. I got a generator
- 30:34Speaker 1: from my freezer, but my stockpile of gas. I need
- 30:36Speaker 1: to start stockpiling fuel, you which you can, right. It's
- 30:40Speaker 1: like unless it's a diesel, It's like that's just the
- 30:44Speaker 1: shelf stability of fuel so so bad, unless you get
- 30:47Speaker 1: a bunch of those steel uh shelf stable fuel deals
- 30:52Speaker 1: where they put the free on or something on top
- 30:55Speaker 1: of it. By I buy ethanol free gas and stabilize it.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Oh okay, Um, but then, uh, you know, I've been
- 31:04Speaker 1: canning some stuff and then I have given away probably
- 31:11Speaker 1: two hundred pounds of meat since since the corn teening
- 31:17Speaker 1: talk started, you know, and my buddies pounds. Yeah yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 1: Wade on that hanging scale, how big are you? How
- 31:27Speaker 1: many freezers do you have and how big are they?
- 31:30Speaker 1: How many pounds that do you have? Total? You got
- 31:32Speaker 1: that big one right there, and just in sausage meat
- 31:37Speaker 1: that I ground up and mixed at Steve's house. There's
- 31:39Speaker 1: eighty pounds of grind in there. Yeah. I did a
- 31:41Speaker 1: batch of grind the r day that was forty pounds, man,
- 31:44Speaker 1: and that was like not a lot. Yeah. So um,
- 31:49Speaker 1: and then there's a little chest freezer next to that one.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Then I got my freezer upstairs two so um freezer
- 31:59Speaker 1: attached to your ridge. Yeah. And so there's there's a
- 32:02Speaker 1: third of an elk in there. Um, almost done eating
- 32:07Speaker 1: through my two thousand seventeen mules here, and um some
- 32:12Speaker 1: cuz here and and uh getting getting through the last
- 32:17Speaker 1: of the fish right now too. So yeah, I mean
- 32:20Speaker 1: I just I gave away a ton of meat. Um,
- 32:25Speaker 1: you're playing both sides you're trying to do. You're doing
- 32:27Speaker 1: prepper stuff where you're making jerky and canny, but you're
- 32:32Speaker 1: also doing community oriented stuff where you're helping people out. Yeah,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and like the canning and the jerky making are all
- 32:40Speaker 1: things where I'm like, oh, I'm gonna get to that
- 32:42Speaker 1: one of these days. And so here's kind of a
- 32:46Speaker 1: good excuse. Um. But the reality is like, for me,
- 32:52Speaker 1: if all this stuff went belly up, if I wasn't
- 32:55Speaker 1: such an invested friend to my friends, I can grab
- 33:00Speaker 1: my backpack and be just fine. Like I'm gonna be
- 33:05Speaker 1: able to get clean water, I'm gonna be able to
- 33:07Speaker 1: get food. I'm gonna be able to have shelter and
- 33:11Speaker 1: and and and be just fine. You know. So, I
- 33:16Speaker 1: guess I'm probably not uh in the same mindset of
- 33:20Speaker 1: somebody who's like, right here, this particular spot, If all
- 33:25Speaker 1: this infrastructure that we rely on goes down, I gotta
- 33:29Speaker 1: stick it out right here right here, I'm gonna be
- 33:33Speaker 1: you'd be more mobility mobility oriented. Yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 33:39Speaker 1: it's stunning. So at the at our website, the meat
- 33:43Speaker 1: eater dot com, we have up we have a tracker.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It's updated constantly, right cal Yep, we have up a
- 33:53Speaker 1: tracker on our website where you can go to follow
- 33:58Speaker 1: and understand state by state rules and regulations and closures
- 34:05Speaker 1: that will impact UH hunting and fishing type folks and
- 34:11Speaker 1: outdoor recreation type folks. And it's getting to be like
- 34:14Speaker 1: a really um it's get to be a really complicated
- 34:20Speaker 1: atmosphere out there in our own state that we have
- 34:23Speaker 1: a we're under right now. Our governor has well, I'm
- 34:27Speaker 1: under two things. So today is the last day of
- 34:32Speaker 1: my fourteen day international travel quarantine. So I was down
- 34:37Speaker 1: on family trip in Baja and things really kind of
- 34:41Speaker 1: went to ship while there there. There was like the
- 34:44Speaker 1: whiff of going to ship was in the air when
- 34:47Speaker 1: we left. I think if it was twelve hours later,
- 34:50Speaker 1: we probably wouldn't have gone. We got down to Baja
- 34:53Speaker 1: just in time to have this feeling of like, oh
- 34:55Speaker 1: my god, what's happening. Um. The day before we got home,
- 35:02Speaker 1: our governor had uh put out a thing that I
- 35:09Speaker 1: don't know what they call it, the mandate whatever, what's
- 35:13Speaker 1: the word I'm looking for that anyone returning a directive
- 35:17Speaker 1: that's correct, thank you, honest, a directive that anyone returning
- 35:20Speaker 1: from international travel. Um, do us do a fourteen day quarantine.
- 35:29Speaker 1: So we've been very strict about it, and I haven't. Um,
- 35:32Speaker 1: I haven't. Besides my home, I haven't walked into It's
- 35:34Speaker 1: it's kind of funny. Besides my home, I haven't walked
- 35:37Speaker 1: into a structure, not even a gas station for two weeks. Today. UM,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I left the airport when I landed in town, and
- 35:50Speaker 1: I just I've been outside in my home, but again,
- 35:53Speaker 1: outside it's been really important. It's a kind of a
- 35:56Speaker 1: somewhat lame time of year for some people might view
- 35:59Speaker 1: it as a aim time of year for outdoor activities,
- 36:01Speaker 1: but just to keep out there and keep at it.
- 36:04Speaker 1: We've been out um trapping beavers and doing stuff. We're
- 36:09Speaker 1: gonna fish this weekend, and there's and then before my
- 36:14Speaker 1: fourteen day quarantine ended, there's another directive of a stay
- 36:16Speaker 1: at home directive for the entire state. And there's a
- 36:19Speaker 1: lot of exceptions for the stay at home directive, and
- 36:22Speaker 1: one of those exceptions is outdoor activity. And you'll find
- 36:25Speaker 1: even places where people in some states are being an
- 36:28Speaker 1: encouraged to do outdoor activity but also being encouraged to
- 36:31Speaker 1: practice social distancing during outdoor activities. So I was trying
- 36:36Speaker 1: to determine what that meant for me specifically, and I've
- 36:39Speaker 1: made some phone calls and read and just read the
- 36:41Speaker 1: actual directive. UM, and yeah, you can you know, you
- 36:46Speaker 1: can travel to do outdoor activities on public lands here.
- 36:50Speaker 1: That's not the case everywhere. Uh. One interesting thing we've
- 36:56Speaker 1: heard from a guy. So for instance, we've got a
- 36:58Speaker 1: guy in Maryland. He's I did. He wrote in and
- 37:01Speaker 1: was talking about just by listening to this show, he
- 37:06Speaker 1: got very interested in learning how to hunt so he
- 37:09Speaker 1: went out and bought a gun, but calls binos turkey decoys,
- 37:16Speaker 1: boots all getting geared up to hunt turkeys this spring,
- 37:20Speaker 1: did all his scouting, got some private land permissions, did
- 37:24Speaker 1: his hunter ed and all he had to do to
- 37:27Speaker 1: seal the deal was do his hunter ed field day,
- 37:32Speaker 1: got his online course work done. But then the state
- 37:37Speaker 1: canceled all field days. So this guy is sitting in
- 37:42Speaker 1: this situation where ah, he's already he's geared up to go.
- 37:50Speaker 1: He did his hunter's d but he can't fulfill his
- 37:53Speaker 1: field day, so his spring turkey season is now off.
- 38:00Speaker 1: My buddy, Tony Coli Grassi in Washington State, was fishing
- 38:05Speaker 1: on the Queets River, an Olympic National Park, and he
- 38:09Speaker 1: was having a good day and getting some steel head,
- 38:12Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, he's got a park ranger
- 38:15Speaker 1: yelling at him in a friendly way that the governor
- 38:19Speaker 1: has just declared that recreational fishing is done and that
- 38:28Speaker 1: whole state. And Tony was actually escorted out of the
- 38:33Speaker 1: park so that they could get a certain area of
- 38:35Speaker 1: the park. Him and his dog were escorted off. And
- 38:38Speaker 1: now in Washington you cannot fish. And this strikes me
- 38:43Speaker 1: as weird because if you lived on a private lake.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Let's say you live on a lake, you can walk
- 38:50Speaker 1: down and hit golf balls out into the lake, but
- 38:53Speaker 1: you can't cast a fishing pole out into the lake.
- 38:57Speaker 1: So rather than putting some parameters around what kinds of fishing,
- 39:00Speaker 1: what places, what group size, whatever, it's just you cannot fish.
- 39:05Speaker 1: It'd be like saying no touching, Like not only did
- 39:09Speaker 1: you close the golf courses, which I'm sure they've done,
- 39:13Speaker 1: but you would also have a directive that says no
- 39:15Speaker 1: one can touch their golf club and swing it. Yeah,
- 39:24Speaker 1: it's interesting how the stark contrast between that and then
- 39:27Speaker 1: a lot of the how the a lot of other
- 39:30Speaker 1: states have changed their fishing REGs recently, um almost completely
- 39:37Speaker 1: hundred eighty degrees in the other direction. And I'm guessing
- 39:39Speaker 1: it's old. Maybe it's because Washington is such a hotbed
- 39:43Speaker 1: of COVID, and so that's why they're just shutting it
- 39:46Speaker 1: all down and telling people to stay inside. Yeah, it
- 39:50Speaker 1: will be in one of the main you know, the
- 39:51Speaker 1: initial explosion point for the virus and then remaining like
- 39:56Speaker 1: a real hotspot. Yeah, the main and Missouri. In Pennsylvania,
- 40:03Speaker 1: there's a couple Yeah, well they they have all suspended
- 40:09Speaker 1: all fishing license requirements right now, and a couple other
- 40:13Speaker 1: states have opened fishing seasons a week early to encourage
- 40:17Speaker 1: people to go outside and fish and uh and you know,
- 40:22Speaker 1: saying that it's you know, good for your health and
- 40:24Speaker 1: so that no one has to probably want go and
- 40:26Speaker 1: get fishing licenses and go in and out of you know, stores,
- 40:29Speaker 1: gas stations or whatever and have human contact and that
- 40:33Speaker 1: that way that you know, no wardens have to have
- 40:35Speaker 1: human contact. Everybody can basically just go fish without a license.
- 40:40Speaker 1: What states? What states is that happening in? Um, definitely Missouri, Uh, Connecticut.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Maine opened fishing on lakes one week earlier on all
- 40:58Speaker 1: all lakes, rivers, and streams earlier, opened it a week earlier. Yeah,
- 41:03Speaker 1: and they're not the only ones. Uh. Wisconsin currently waving
- 41:08Speaker 1: off fees for state parks and trails. UM. Maine, Yeah,
- 41:17Speaker 1: their inland fishing season was set to open. Uh or No,
- 41:23Speaker 1: it usually opens April one, but they opened at March
- 41:26Speaker 1: for the same reason, just to get let people to
- 41:28Speaker 1: get out there. Uh. Pennsylvania trout openers now April eight,
- 41:33Speaker 1: and that's across the whole state. There's not I guess
- 41:36Speaker 1: normal years, they have different days for different parts of
- 41:40Speaker 1: the state when the opener is UM and now it's
- 41:43Speaker 1: just wide open. Uh. I think that about covers it.
- 41:50Speaker 1: It fuels this this sort of suspicion or conspiracy theory.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I almost hesitate to say this because I don't want
- 41:59Speaker 1: to traffic and missing formation and I know this isn't
- 42:01Speaker 1: the case, but I'll say but I've had friends in
- 42:04Speaker 1: Washington who have expressed to me, and being baffled by
- 42:08Speaker 1: the severity of the directive, have expressed me this sense
- 42:12Speaker 1: that they feel that their state UM has UH. They
- 42:19Speaker 1: feel as though it has a sort of uneasy relationship
- 42:21Speaker 1: with its hunters and anglers. Anyways, that it sort of
- 42:24Speaker 1: feels that fuels this little bit of paranoia that is
- 42:28Speaker 1: not a supportive UM. You know that's not supportive in
- 42:32Speaker 1: some way. But again I shouldn't say that because I
- 42:36Speaker 1: don't know the full story there. But it does feel
- 42:39Speaker 1: really uh like there's a sort of a lack of
- 42:41Speaker 1: nuance and how it's being pushed forward. I know that
- 42:46Speaker 1: yesterday in Michigan, for instance, UM, they've been seeing with
- 42:51Speaker 1: so many people home from work in school, they've been
- 42:55Speaker 1: seeing an explosion in visitation at certain fishing access sites
- 43:01Speaker 1: and recreation areas, to the point that they have taken
- 43:05Speaker 1: to closing some because people are going to these fishing spots,
- 43:10Speaker 1: like I like one like Tippy Dam, or used to
- 43:12Speaker 1: fish Steelhead and Walleye going to some of these fishing
- 43:15Speaker 1: spots um and not able to practice responsible social distancing
- 43:20Speaker 1: at the fishing spots, and they've had to close it
- 43:23Speaker 1: down because people are too crowded. I was talking to
- 43:27Speaker 1: a firefighter here in our own town and they closed
- 43:31Speaker 1: one of the local ski hills. But you can still
- 43:34Speaker 1: go there, you know, the the oftentimes ski hills around
- 43:38Speaker 1: public land, around national forest land, so the summertime you
- 43:40Speaker 1: can go wander around up there. Uh, they closed the lifts,
- 43:44Speaker 1: like close the lodge, vending services, all that and shut
- 43:47Speaker 1: it down, but you can still just go up there
- 43:50Speaker 1: and sled or ski on the hill. And they had
- 43:54Speaker 1: put around some like guidelines about how to handle this,
- 43:57Speaker 1: and that you'd go up and like skin up, ski down,
- 44:00Speaker 1: don't linger, and that somehow turned into a hundred and
- 44:04Speaker 1: fifty people having a party on the balcony of the lodge,
- 44:10Speaker 1: and so then they're forced to come in and consider, uh,
- 44:14Speaker 1: how much are people able to just be smart and
- 44:18Speaker 1: how much you need to come in and institute a
- 44:21Speaker 1: nanny state because people are have a hard time understanding
- 44:25Speaker 1: sort of the spirit of what's trying to be accomplished.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Nebraska suspended new sales of nonresident turkey licenses. So if
- 44:38Speaker 1: you already hold a spring turkey license in Nebraska and
- 44:42Speaker 1: you're a nonresident, you can go hunt. But I believe
- 44:45Speaker 1: as of yesterday or the day before so uh, as
- 44:49Speaker 1: of like March thirty one or thirty or something in there,
- 44:54Speaker 1: they weren't selling any more non resident turkey licenses. Uh,
- 45:00Speaker 1: Washington shut down resident and non resident canceled some of
- 45:07Speaker 1: the early bear hunts. Is that correct? That's correct? What
- 45:13Speaker 1: are some other examples you've got you guys are seeing here? Um? Well,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I just buddy mine, who's one of the very accomplished,
- 45:23Speaker 1: awesome anglers at the Big Horn Angler down there in
- 45:25Speaker 1: Fort Smith, Montana, just took a picture of some concrete
- 45:30Speaker 1: barricades that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks boat ramps there
- 45:35Speaker 1: on the on the Big Horn. No, seriously, as well
- 45:41Speaker 1: as we're talking, um, so, I imagine we're gonna hear
- 45:47Speaker 1: some news on that here pretty quick. The here's the
- 45:50Speaker 1: here's the thing that's been irking me. And it came
- 45:54Speaker 1: to light again yesterday when I was looking at the
- 45:57Speaker 1: Nebraska executive order. UM, and everybody who's listening to this,
- 46:04Speaker 1: follow the link and read the actual executive orders for
- 46:08Speaker 1: all of this stuff, because it is just too easy
- 46:14Speaker 1: to sensationalize these orders, uh in whatever media. UM. There's
- 46:19Speaker 1: a lot of passion involved. But the in the list
- 46:25Speaker 1: of executive orders for the state of Nebraska, there's also
- 46:32Speaker 1: an executive order to allow drive up mixed drinks. And
- 46:42Speaker 1: how we can determine the drive up mixed drinks is
- 46:48Speaker 1: a stronger benefit to the health of the population of
- 46:52Speaker 1: Nebraska then running around hunting turkeys. I'm and we were
- 47:00Speaker 1: talking about non residents, right, But it's like, we're gonna
- 47:04Speaker 1: lay this thing on health. Let's get real healthy. And
- 47:09Speaker 1: I apologize to the business owners on this. I used
- 47:11Speaker 1: to sling a lot of drinks down at Red at
- 47:12Speaker 1: the bar in Missoula, Montana. I believe they're doing mixed
- 47:15Speaker 1: drink cocktails to go now too. So yeah and so
- 47:19Speaker 1: so if you go to our website they got you'll
- 47:21Speaker 1: you'll find a banner this COVID Night team changes the
- 47:25Speaker 1: hunting and fishing regulations, and it's kind of like it's
- 47:27Speaker 1: it's amazing to look at what this sort of I'd
- 47:31Speaker 1: love to understand it better. The different approaches. Yeah, New Jersey,
- 47:36Speaker 1: Like do we talk about New Jersey's trout season ahead
- 47:40Speaker 1: of schedule? Like in in Wyoming, if you want to
- 47:44Speaker 1: register your bear a black bear baiting site, you're supposed
- 47:49Speaker 1: to be able to go in tomorrow and start registering it.
- 47:52Speaker 1: And you normally would go into an office fishing game
- 47:54Speaker 1: office to register your bait site. They're trying to work
- 47:58Speaker 1: out a way to some new siezures that they'll they'll
- 48:01Speaker 1: delay by two weeks, some new procedures where you can
- 48:04Speaker 1: register your sites online and not have to come into
- 48:07Speaker 1: an office. Yeah, I believe the State of Idaho, Um,
- 48:12Speaker 1: you know the same deal. You gotta you gotta have
- 48:14Speaker 1: a permit for your bait. Um they had it set up.
- 48:21Speaker 1: I feel like earlier this week or end of last
- 48:23Speaker 1: week where it was you had to set an appointment
- 48:27Speaker 1: um to come in and and do that. I would
- 48:30Speaker 1: assume they're going to switch to online. Um, you know
- 48:34Speaker 1: the at the point like I'm sure we're gonna get
- 48:40Speaker 1: into a lot of this. But I don't think any
- 48:45Speaker 1: angler outdoors person can have the mindset that this isn't
- 48:49Speaker 1: gonna happen, because it's it hasn't happened yet. Uh, just
- 48:54Speaker 1: like we self police for poachers pretty darn well and
- 48:58Speaker 1: people who throw trash out like we gotta we gotta
- 49:01Speaker 1: self police for social distancing. And if that means going
- 49:05Speaker 1: to the next fishing access site down the road because
- 49:07Speaker 1: the one that you want to go to is to
- 49:09Speaker 1: too crowded, you better move on down the road, because
- 49:12Speaker 1: you know, it's these examples, these bad examples that are
- 49:16Speaker 1: set in the precedent for the entire state. Um, it's
- 49:20Speaker 1: a it's a tough I mean, it's a really tough
- 49:23Speaker 1: spot for our community because you have um people who
- 49:30Speaker 1: just by the fact of what they're engaged in, just
- 49:32Speaker 1: people who are like, don't do well being cooped up
- 49:37Speaker 1: and confined. And when you look at being outdoors, is
- 49:41Speaker 1: this place where you can kind of find some space
- 49:43Speaker 1: for yourself, right and just get away from it all.
- 49:47Speaker 1: And then people start pointing out ways in which, um,
- 49:53Speaker 1: it's not safe because the overcrowding. It just gets like
- 49:58Speaker 1: it gets intimidating, and you don you want to be
- 50:00Speaker 1: a good player, right and and be supportive, and like
- 50:03Speaker 1: I said, we got had a quarantine to travel quarantine
- 50:06Speaker 1: UM and and have just stuck our immediate families, spent
- 50:10Speaker 1: the last two weeks engaging with no one besides me
- 50:13Speaker 1: and my wife and our three kids. So you're a
- 50:17Speaker 1: good player. But then you look at some of this
- 50:20Speaker 1: stuff and it winds up being uh, yeah, it winds
- 50:24Speaker 1: There's there's aspects of this to drive at home for everybody,
- 50:27Speaker 1: and there's a there's a risk here of sounding callous. Uh,
- 50:32Speaker 1: there's immense amounts of suffering happening. UM. People are dying,
- 50:36Speaker 1: people are losing family members, and I'm not losing sight
- 50:39Speaker 1: of that. But as we stayed to pass around political
- 50:42Speaker 1: conversations and otherwise this we try to in this show
- 50:46Speaker 1: stick to UM the ways in which world events and
- 50:52Speaker 1: political events and national events impact a like segment of
- 50:55Speaker 1: our existence. And this segment of our existence we're talking
- 50:58Speaker 1: about here is um hunting and fishing and other outdoor activities.
- 51:02Speaker 1: So that's why our focus is there rather than talking
- 51:06Speaker 1: about you know, lack of ventilators that a state might
- 51:09Speaker 1: be experiencing or overcrowding in hospitals. Like that's us real
- 51:12Speaker 1: and that's what's going on, and that's the news you
- 51:14Speaker 1: can get. But we're trying, you know, we haven't admittedly
- 51:19Speaker 1: limited focus. Um, South Carolina, is it too early to
- 51:26Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like the tie in for like conservation
- 51:31Speaker 1: minded folks is like, we're we're dealing with people on
- 51:36Speaker 1: a population level, not you as an individual. And it's
- 51:40Speaker 1: going to be unfair for all of us at certain
- 51:45Speaker 1: times because we're What's happening, whether you want to believe
- 51:49Speaker 1: it or not in some cases, is we're talking about
- 51:54Speaker 1: people as a as one giant entity, not you as
- 52:01Speaker 1: an individual who, um, you know has all your turkey
- 52:04Speaker 1: hunting stuff ready to go, and um your governor says
- 52:08Speaker 1: you can't go turkey hunting. You know it's it sucks.
- 52:10Speaker 1: I hate it, but man, you gotta find some some ways,
- 52:14Speaker 1: some positive ways to focus that energy. Yeah. I had
- 52:18Speaker 1: been personally, I had been for nine months planning a
- 52:24Speaker 1: trip up to an area called the high Line, which
- 52:27Speaker 1: is some of the lowest human population densities that can
- 52:31Speaker 1: be found in the lower forty eight AH and just
- 52:39Speaker 1: kind of a couple of days ago realized it wasn't
- 52:41Speaker 1: gonna happen, but officially pulled the plug on it this morning.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And you know, I could load my truck up in
- 52:49Speaker 1: my camping gear up, and my kids up here with
- 52:52Speaker 1: food that we already have in the house, grab a
- 52:55Speaker 1: box of latex gloves, and do nothing but pump gas
- 52:57Speaker 1: with a latex glove on and be up there camping.
- 53:01Speaker 1: But just something about the fact that it's a four
- 53:03Speaker 1: or five hour drive made it feel like I was
- 53:08Speaker 1: sort of not within the spirit of that. I was
- 53:13Speaker 1: not within the spirit of what it is we're trying
- 53:15Speaker 1: to accomplish here. I think your spot on. But then
- 53:21Speaker 1: you can think about it. It's like I will have
- 53:23Speaker 1: interaction with no one. I'll buy a tank of gas.
- 53:27Speaker 1: You'll put the effort into having interaction with no one
- 53:30Speaker 1: as well. Oh but I think no, I think. I
- 53:34Speaker 1: think the reason not to do that, though, is that
- 53:37Speaker 1: you know, as limited as the risk is, and the
- 53:40Speaker 1: risk might be higher that someone's gonna get hurt just
- 53:44Speaker 1: throwing snowballs at each other at your house or get
- 53:48Speaker 1: cut with a knife, but just getting on the road
- 53:50Speaker 1: and traveling that far away from your house and getting
- 53:54Speaker 1: away from your community, like you just sort of opening
- 53:57Speaker 1: your yourself up to a little bit more unknown own
- 54:00Speaker 1: and that unknown could turn into something bad, and then
- 54:03Speaker 1: you know, you could be stressing the system that we're
- 54:06Speaker 1: trying not to stress right now. Yeah, I got it.
- 54:18Speaker 1: South Carolina, Um, all the lottery hunts on the w
- 54:23Speaker 1: m as have been canceled. North Carolina, some state parks
- 54:30Speaker 1: and then boat launches and game lands on some state
- 54:33Speaker 1: parks closed to public access. National parks are shutting down.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Arches and canyon Land National Parks closed until further notice.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Glacier National Park closed until further notice. You know, this
- 54:48Speaker 1: makes me think of it's something that a really interesting
- 54:50Speaker 1: experience that happened to me my brother years ago, is
- 54:54Speaker 1: we had a horrible fire season. This is twenty year
- 55:00Speaker 1: as ago. Maybe we had this horrible fire season and
- 55:03Speaker 1: there are huge areas of big areas of national forest
- 55:08Speaker 1: that had been shut down and you couldn't get into them,
- 55:13Speaker 1: and they had been closed for In some cases they've
- 55:15Speaker 1: been closed for upwards of a month weeks or a month,
- 55:20Speaker 1: and the closures on these national forests extended into archery
- 55:23Speaker 1: elk season, and we were actually heard some rumors that
- 55:31Speaker 1: they might be removing some of the barriers and opened
- 55:33Speaker 1: some of these things back up. And we'd sort of
- 55:35Speaker 1: driven down to hunt on spec based on rumors we heard,
- 55:41Speaker 1: and we were driving up. We were driving up of
- 55:45Speaker 1: access road to a chunk of National forest and actually
- 55:49Speaker 1: shot the ship with the uh forest ranger who's taken
- 55:55Speaker 1: down the barricade like we're the first truck through as
- 55:59Speaker 1: he's opening up this thing. They've been opened forever. And
- 56:01Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not joking, man, this is a place
- 56:04Speaker 1: we had hunted pretty heavily. I'm not joking. We got
- 56:07Speaker 1: to the there's a big meadow at the trailhead. There's
- 56:10Speaker 1: a big meadow there where um, guys will like when
- 56:13Speaker 1: they guys will put up hot wire lines to crawl
- 56:17Speaker 1: their horses and stuff when they're packing in. There's elk
- 56:20Speaker 1: in the trailhead, right, So you imagine the impact of like, uh,
- 56:26Speaker 1: you know, Glacier National Park being closed, and um, you
- 56:32Speaker 1: imagine the impact of some of these stretches of river
- 56:36Speaker 1: and stuff that just like wouldn't get hit and maybe
- 56:40Speaker 1: these are places that just get fish three sixty five
- 56:42Speaker 1: days a year, right, And what that's gonna look like
- 56:46Speaker 1: later if all of a sudden, let's say it's stuff
- 56:51Speaker 1: stays closed. What what it would be to have it
- 56:53Speaker 1: closed for a month and then get back in there
- 56:56Speaker 1: um down the line, just like some more interesting stuff,
- 57:00Speaker 1: is it? Uh yeah? West Virginia suspended fishing license blows
- 57:07Speaker 1: my mind. Fishing open to the public with or without license,
- 57:12Speaker 1: You still gotta follow bag limits. Michigan suspends all charter
- 57:17Speaker 1: fishing and guide operations at least until April. I got
- 57:25Speaker 1: a buddy here who's a guide, uh not close here
- 57:29Speaker 1: here in Montana, and he's all this trips are canceled.
- 57:33Speaker 1: He's scraping up odd jobs, painting houses, doing yardwork for
- 57:36Speaker 1: people right now. Just immediately felt the crush. Oh yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 1: In Oregon, as of midnight, Columbia River closed to all
- 57:46Speaker 1: salmon and steelhead fishing. They did it to maintain solidarity
- 57:52Speaker 1: with the state of Washington, as two states shared this fishery.
- 57:57Speaker 1: So you picture there, right, You can't fish in while Shehington,
- 58:00Speaker 1: but you just go over the bridge whatever, buy an
- 58:03Speaker 1: Oregon license and start fishing the same river mains closing
- 58:09Speaker 1: state park certain state parks Washington. You can't pick clams either,
- 58:16Speaker 1: so they're not just picking on rod and reel fisherman,
- 58:18Speaker 1: Yellowstone closed, Grand te Town National Park closed. Miss suspended
- 58:28Speaker 1: all fishing license requirements. So Missouri is pretty funny. The
- 58:34Speaker 1: fine print says you have to be in good standing
- 58:39Speaker 1: with the Missouri Department of Conservation, as in, if you
- 58:44Speaker 1: have a previously revoked fishing license, that's great. You can't
- 58:49Speaker 1: you can't legally fish even when nobody has a fishing license.
- 58:53Speaker 1: So if your privileges are suspended, you're like, that's really interesting.
- 58:57Speaker 1: I love it what people think of they're good stuff.
- 58:59Speaker 1: Where some guy I was like, yeah, but what about
- 59:02Speaker 1: people who aren't supposed to buy a license? Can they fish?
- 59:04Speaker 1: And someone's like, yeah, good catch, let's write down. Can
- 59:11Speaker 1: you imagine being the conservation officer trying to track those
- 59:14Speaker 1: folks down. Yeah, so dude that you know, it's like,
- 59:17Speaker 1: it's like, dude, you can't fish. It's like, what, there's
- 59:19Speaker 1: no license requirement right now. I know I can't buy
- 59:21Speaker 1: a license, but I don't need it right now. Wisconsin,
- 59:24Speaker 1: here's interesting. Wisconsin waves all fees for state parks and trails.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Though the state is under a shelter in place order,
- 59:33Speaker 1: the order recognizes outdoor activity is essential, so come one,
- 59:40Speaker 1: come all, No fees at state parks. Florida all state
- 59:46Speaker 1: parks are closed. Oregon all state parks closed. So I
- 59:54Speaker 1: wonder if I'm sure this has to play in somehow.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: It's like the impact of people on those individual park systems. Right,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: It's like we've all seen I haven't been Yellowstone in years,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: but so many pictures and so many stories at Yellowstone,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and people are so packed in around everything and wildlife
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: spottings and bear jams and all that stuff. Um, And
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: maybe some of these state parks like they just don't
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: have that many visitors or don't have a density of
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: visitors in some of these areas, and that's why they
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: get to stay open. The um. Well, you know, like Florida,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: that's a crowded ass place with a lot of boats.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: You know how Florida we're talking earlier that Washington says
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: that k no fishing in Florida. The governor issued an
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: executive order requiring all recreational boats to remain at least
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: fifty ft apart. Wow. So there you're sort of you're
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you're in that case, you're sort of trying to work
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: with people, but you're also putting um, you're also giving
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: people a lot of room to to screw up or not.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: You're treating people like grown ups, and they don't always
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: do well. They don't I mean when they get treated
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: like grown ups unfortunately. But I but I love it's
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: a great I love it. I mean, if it works,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: it's like it's it's you know, it's it's opening up.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: It's opening up to give people some room to still
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: operate and and and and try to find some mental
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: health um while still following through on the objectives of
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the state to keep people apart. Yeah, it man, it's
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it's just so like you know, working outside Glacier National
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Park for a long time, the the park is there
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: and it's beautiful and awesome, but you get to see
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: firsthand how reliant people are on the services provided by
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: the National Park Service or provided by the vendors approved
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: by the National Park Service. What you mean trash cans?
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Like you're staring at this unbelievable mountain ranch up on
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: McDonald Pass going to the Sun Road, and it is
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: absolutely breathtaking, gorgeous, and there's mountain goats and stuff like that,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and then you drop your gaze a little bit and
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: instead of people seeing a very full trash can, and
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: being like, oh, I better doing something else responsible with
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: my trash. My refuse like hanging on to it a
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: little bit longer until we find an empty trash can,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: uh down the road maybe or down the sidewalk. They
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: just chuck it there next to the gas can or
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: gas or sorry to the trash can, or pile it
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: up on top and the wind blows up and takes
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: it away. And it's like, I just see, like people
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: are so reliant on those services clean bathrooms, you know,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: all this infrastructure that has to be manned by people,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and we get to this spot where it's like, okay, well,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: why do these uh, these folks have to be you know,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: potentially in harm's way, um to provide those services that
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: we know people expect when they go to a national
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: park and a lot of state parks, a lot of
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: fishing access sites, um. And so I do wonder if
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: there's some park superintendents that are weighing in on this
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: to the governor and they're like, you know, we we
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: don't have problems with people here, so we'd like to
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: remain open. I wonder if they're making a decision or
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: if it's like, you know, we are so understaffed and
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: so under budget under the best of circumstances here because
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the crowds that show up behave like such pigs that
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: we'd prefer to close. It's funny you mentioned the garbage thing,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: because like in raising kids, we try really hard to
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: make them aware of that kind of thing, you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: like how you handle your personal refuse, and that when
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: we eat in a restaurant, we make them get down
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: on the ground and clean up, and to police their
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: area around their plane sea before they get off the plane,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: and not just be that. Ah. Someone will get it,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: like I make him get down and crawl around under
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: the table at restaurants. I love that picking their mess up, dude,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: because if you don't pound it into him now though,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: it's like they'll never get it. It's so funny you
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: bring that up, like the overflowed trash can, and people
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: are like, I can't just throw it on the ground.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I'll set it down there and my piece of trash
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: will displace some other piece of trash that will land
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: on the ground. But no one can say I didn't try, Yeah, man,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: did I? I Man? I'm probably just complaining for the
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: sake of complaining, lamenting, but man, I've been thinking about
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: that a lot for some reason, Like, I mean, are
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: we bringing some of these closures upon ourselves because as
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: a group, we have been behaving so poorly in some
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: of these places. Hey, did we hit it? Uh? Yeah,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: we already hit New Jersey ten days ahead of scheduled
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: trout season. Trotty're gonna be feeling the pressure. Uh, ca'l
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: tell everybody about Well, first off, let me let me
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: start with this. Um oh, you know what I want
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: to tell you guys about real quick, A little update
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: non COVID update is, Uh, after eleven months of waiting,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: eleven months of incubation, I got my suppressors, my silence,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: so I had two silencers suppressors. It's funny because ever
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: used to call them silencers. But it's like, you know
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: how you have the death tax in the estate tax,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: and it's the same thing, and the word you use
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: depends on your viewpoint about said tax. Uh, if you
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: support the tax, She's like, let's call it him in
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: the state tax because that makes it seem like you're
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: just hitting rich people and that's cool. And then dudes
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: with enough assets that they're going to be hit by
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: such attacks called a death tax, because that makes it
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: seem like, well, dude, you can't tax the man upon
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: it is death. That's not fair. So you use different
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: words to sell your viewpoint. What had historically been silencers, um,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: which is a miss I'll admit is a misnomer. UM.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Silencer doesn't make your gun silenced. Uh, it suppresses the
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: sound and you still have the sonic crack, you know,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: if you're using most most ammunitions faster than the speed
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: of sound, and so you still have a sonic crack,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: a loud noise bre either way. Suppressors, so what you're
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: supposed to call him? A year ago, I got two
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: suppressors of twenty two caliber in the parlance like you'd
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: say it can. I got a twenty two caliber can
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: and a thirty cow can UM. But you can't bring
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: them home with you. Like you can go down to
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: the to the you can go down to the sporting story.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: You can go to Walmart right and buy a rifle
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: and take it home with you. But if you want
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: a device to make it not so damn loud, you
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: have to get a special a T A T F
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: permit for it. Um, And you go down to like
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: an FFL and they receive your cans, they receive your suppressors,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: and then you fill out all these forms and you
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: send it off in the apparent. I don't know if
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it's just I don't know what it is that the
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: story goes that the a t F is so backlogged
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: and suppressor forms that it's taking them that long to
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: do their end of the deal and get your form back.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: So I dropped off my two suppressors and waited eleven months.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden, I get a call from
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: the sporting goods store that I can come down and
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: take possession of my suppressors. People, and there's a lot
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: of countries in Europe where it's super hard to get
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: a gun, but you can go down to the equivalent
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: of your local Walmart and buy yourself a suppressor. So
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: it's just like they can't believe. Some people can't believe
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: that in Americas, like I can't believe you can hunt.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Were one of those. And then I remember talking to
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: a guy in Scotland and him saying to me, I
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: can't believe you can hunt without a suppressor. So I
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: haven't done any hunt with mine yet, but I now
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: am the proud owner of two suppressors, which Yanni. In
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: your situation of gunshots downtown when trying to scare off looters,
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: are trying to scare off burglars, you could have had
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: a probably a much more intimidating sound were they aware
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: that you were up there with a suppressor shooting warning shots.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: That scare me more. I'd be more scared because I'd
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: have a different vision of who it was that was
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: wielding the firearm. I'd be more like, Huh, this isn't
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: gonna work out well for me. I can't wait till
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: the day that we can just when you buy a rifle,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: you can just buy the suppressor with it. I'm gonna
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: have it on all of my guns. It's funny because
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: let's say guns like the people that resisted like and
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I understand the arguments against it. There's an argument against
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: it that it makes the that you could commit a
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: crime without that lot as loud of that telltale crack right,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: and burglars, murderers, what have you are gonna be like
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: less inclined to shoot because the guns damn loud. It
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: will alert people to the right. That's a reasonable argument.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Then there's a really reasonable argument that poachers will be
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: emboldened because there's not that telltale gun shot often the
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: you know, often the night that a game warden might hear.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: And in fact, we were talking to a game order
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: on him as the game warden in Missouri one time,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: and he was saying he personally didn't like suppressors because
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: he gets a lot of work done based off you know,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: towards dusk, there's that one rifle shot off in the
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: distance and he's like, huh, something about that seems fishy,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: and he heads over there to investigate, and he was saying,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: without the report, um, he feels that his ability to
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: do his job would be compromised. So there are those arguments.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: But I wonder, let's say that for whatever reason, guns
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: just weren't loud, right, that somehow the mechanics of of
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: a gun going off wasn't loud. Would there be people
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: pushing for regulations that you need to put a thing
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: on your gun to make it louder. No, probably not.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: So the fact that someone might want their gun to
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: not be so loud seems reasonable if we could achieve
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: it with different powders. Somehow, some scientists developed a gunpowder
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: uh that just for whatever reason, I'll understand the mechanics
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: of it made it so. It just didn't so damn
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: loud when it went off and people started using it,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: would they be bummed out? Would they say, now, no, no no, no, no,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: you gotta stick with the super noisy gun powder. It's interesting, like, hey,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: I noticed that when you shoot your muskeet there's not
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: a blinding cloud of smoke. Uh what you got there?
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: That's called smokeless powder. That's some regulator wo be Like,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: you know, I want you guys to go back to
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: the real smokey guy. I liked it better when you
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: couldn't see ship after your shot. I had a fella
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: right in the other day. He was kind of getting
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: spicy with me because he was wondering why I hadn't
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: brought up talked about the fact that, uh, everybody should
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: have suppressors and your on your on your conservation show. Yeah,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: And I'm just like, how I don't have one. I
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: don't even apply for big game tags. That set me
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: up for that much disappointment of waiting for eleven months. Um,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: you know, I'm like, when it becomes easier, I'll have one.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: But right now, I'm like, I just got I don't
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: like filling out forms that set me up for a
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: lot of waiting. So oh, to be honest with you,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I did it as much as just because I wanted
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: to explore the processes anything else. It was a learning experience.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, because you hear so much complaining. I mean,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: I'm here like I haven't even tried because I've talked
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: so many people that have complained so much about it.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: I'm like, man, that doesn't seem like it's worth my time.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: So there's this still there's an ill fated bill out
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: there called the Hearing Protection Act, and that's like a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: name for an act where you'd be like, oh, who
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: the hell could argue against that? But it would be Um,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: it would remove a lot of the red tape and
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and remove a lot of the red tape around suppressors.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Uh do they want to touch on? Everyone knows me
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: and you're honest, are running for president, which is going
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: pretty well, um, Ronella tells. And we launched our campaign.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: There's the issue of where we stand on campaign finance reform,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and we had always said that, you know, our campaign
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: finances were reformed because you know, how you can go
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: and buy a Maga hat you can buy and make
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: America grade again. Hat. I saw recently that you could
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: enter a drawing to win a Maga hat signed by
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: President Trump, right, and they sell the mega hats um
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and it raises money for Trump's reelection. Bid. I don't
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: know if you can buy a Biden hat. I haven't
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: seen anybody running around. I never seen one guy yet
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: wearing a Biden hat. But let's just let's just assume
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: maybe you can buy yourself a Biden hat. Um. What
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: that money does is it goes to support the campaign.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: But Ronella tells is different because when you buy our stickers, hats,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: t shirts, yard signs, what have you, we take all
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: the profits from those sales and don't line you know,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: don't use it to to stock our own campaign coffers,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: but we use it to plow our profits into our
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Land Access Initiative and cal tell them all about it, alright.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: So the Ranella who tell us campaign merchandise, any purchase
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: of that merchandise, the profits from those sales will go
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: into our Land Access Initiative fund. That fund will be
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: utilized when we can find that opportunity that fulfills the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: campaign promise, which is giving you us we all more
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: or better access to hunting and fishing. So if you
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: know of a property or a landowner or an area
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: that could benefit from let's say, an easement or a
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: boat ramp or a trail or something that accomplishes this goal,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: then let us know. And you can do that by
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: going to uh the Rinella who tell us website and
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: filling out a very simple form um and uh and
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and yeah hopefully we can we can keep this thing
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: going so that that's that's the program. But we're all
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: really excited about it, and we've got a bunch of
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: submissions um already what kind of submissions are coming in? Um, Well,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: because of the design of the form we have, UM,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it gets to be pretty pointed.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: You know, we're we're asking for um, pretty pretty good
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: details of of the peace or pieces uh that that
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: folks are submitting. So, UM, you can't just write in
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: and say, boy, I'd really like to get to this place,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: and I can't right now. You have to write in
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: and say, hey, here's the name of this landowner. This
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: is that they would be amicable to talking about and
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: easement or this property is for sale or this property
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: will be coming up for sale, and it backs up
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: to those types of situations. We need a hot lead,
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: is what you're saying, Really need a hot lead. Yeah.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: And because the nature of this and what everybody else
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: deals with two is I can't really be like, well,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: this one particular property that's up for sale right now
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: is just a real jam. And if we were to
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: get a hold of that, we'd provide access to twenty
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: acres for the low, low price of because I don't
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: want some you know, real self centered son of a
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: gun to move in there and scoop you, scoop all
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: of us, Steve, scoop all of us. Yeah, got it.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: So the way to support the land access initiative go
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: again if you go to the to the metator dot com,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com all one word uh go there.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: In addition to COVID nineteen changes the hunting and fishing regulations,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: which includes park access and all that kind of stuff
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: we've been talking about. You can go there and find
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: our runella potels things support us Better Hunting and Fishing
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: for America Sports campaign. Sorry for the interruption, Steve, but
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: it's under the conservation tab. If you click on that,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: and then and and then there's a drop down menu
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: and the bottom uh option is Land Access Initiative, And
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: that'll take you to the page where you can all
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: your answers about what we're talking about will be answered. Sorry,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: all your questions will be answered. Yeah, pull really well
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: across the country. Um, better hunting and access or better
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: hunting and fishing for America with our Land Access initiative.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Uh oh, you know one last thing I want to
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: talk about, and then I just want to make sure
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: he's got a chance to chime in with he's got
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: A guy pointed out that all the talk we used
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: to have about the Michigan hello, um, which is the practice,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: and it's it's a national practice of giving people the bird.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I gave you guys one today when I said, as
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: a way of saying what's up, you flip someone off.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: They were talking about this guy wrote in saying it's um,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: that's a very uh zeitgeisty way to say hi, because
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: it eliminates, it eliminates contact. You shake someone when you
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: say hi. By shaking someone's hand, you're exchanging a massive
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: amount of germs. But when you give him the Michigan hello,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: there's no exchange of germs, and it's also it's a
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: twofold message. You're saying hello, Oh, but there's also a
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: little bit of it don't come near me mixed in.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: So when you when I see you and I throw
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: you the bird, I'm saying like, hello, keep your distance. Yeah,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: you're eliminating the confusion of all those extra fingers in
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: the air of a traditional high exactly. Yeah. So this
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: guy was saying that the Michigan hello is really like
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: a thing that we should all be paying attention to
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: and using right now. And I've been up in my
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: usage considerably, Johnnie, what else you got. Have you taught
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: your kids about what the middle finger means? Yeah, well
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I didn't tell them, like they know that they're not
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: supposed to do it, and then if one of them
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: they know you're not supposed to do it, they don't.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: I didn't like put it. I didn't verbalize it. They
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: know it's an insult, and they know that to watch
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: each other, and if they catch one another inadvertently with
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: their middle finger out for whatever reason, like for whatever,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: they're holding their cup in such a way that makes
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: their middle finger appear to be out, they will then
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: tattletale on that person for putting their middle finger up.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: They feel that it's like, regardless of intent, regardless of scenario,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: keep your middle finger in line with its neighbors. Got it? Uh? Sorry,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: what were you gonna ask me? Just what if you
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: got any final things? I missed you? Sudamn bad? Ye? Honest,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: this almost brings a tear to my eye. Man, this
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: is the longest we've This isn't many years. This is
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: the most we've been apart. Oh, has has to be.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Here's something that comes to mind. Man. We have some
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: neighbors that simply just can't seem to live without deliveries
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: every day. And uh, I feel bad for the FedEx
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: and ups folks that have to uh come to people's
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: houses and possibly come in contact with people for bullshit
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: that they probably don't need. Limit your buying, you don't
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: need nothing right now. But but but let me let
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: me counter that for a minute, because, um, you might
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: want to ask these people if they want to continue,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: if they like having their job right now, and that
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: we want to continue some economic activity in this country. Um,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: and if we determine that there are certain ways in
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: which there can be some economic engagement that minimizes risk. Sure,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: I don't know what I want to tell the guy
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: from fed Ex or a guy from UPS that, uh,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: it's too bad you're working, and that you should be
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: like people that work in restaurants who have no income
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, No, I just feel only I only
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: feel bad for him if he's thinking, like, man, I'm
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: getting put into a situation I don't want to be
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: in because of what's going on. Yeah, but I hope
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: that they have I hope that they have some practices
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: they do too, you know, they have some practices they
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: were able to use to stay as safe as possible. Sure,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: hopefully they're heating them. Um, hopefully everybody's heating them. Um.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: But I don't know. You know, we did the other night.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: I don't know. Oh it was from butcher box. I
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: had like, uh, maybe forty chicken wings in my freezer. Uh,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: you know, because everybody's been finding these little gems in
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: their freezers, uh during these times and everybody's got more
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: time to go digging around, and I haven't had forty
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: chicken wings. My girls are six and eight, and they
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: had they had no idea what a chicken wing was,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: and so we I made barbecue sauce. I made karaoke sauce,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: and then a classic just you know, hot sauce and butter,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: you know, spicy chicken wing sauces just for your family. Well,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: the barbecue sauce was already in the fridge, so still ambitious.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: That's ambitious. But Matt, I tell you, we had such
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: a fun evening of frying and eating chicken wings and
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: talking through the whole chicken wing thing. I had to
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: tell them about there's whole restaurants out there that will
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: go to when hopefully the world goes back to normal
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: where all you can eat is chicken wings. And uh,
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: they're really blown away with a nice fun evening, uh
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: with chicken wings. So next time you go grocery shop
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: and see if Costco has probably got a giant bag
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: of frozen wings you can get. Did you try to
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: tackle buffalo wings? Buffalo? No? No, I did not. I
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: did not. I should have. If you've got kids, UM,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: I think it's helpful right now to imagine how you're
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: approaching this whole thing with them. We kind of went
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: to a two weeks ago. We had to go to
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: a UM information on a need to know basis with
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: our kids, because we started to feel that it was
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: getting a little it was getting a little much in
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: a little chaotic. Um. I'm not one. I'm not inclined to.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I don't like the sugarcoat stuff for my kids. My
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: kids understand, um. You know, we talked very openly about
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: sex and drugs and rock and roll, you know, as
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: much as we can around home. Like we don't have
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: a lot of we don't create a lot of blind
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: spots for him. But it's it's I'm trying, We're trying
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: to try to, you know, have this be not the
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: least not traumatic. Um, a lot of big changes in
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: lot of things going on, but we try to keep
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: a pretty positive spin on it. And I think that
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: one good way to to help do that is just
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: around evening meal time, we've been working, um, cooking together
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: a lot. I had the kids last night make They
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: did everything to make venice and meatballs, you know, like
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: from taking bread, putting the food processor, making the bread crumbs.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: They did the whole process. So we've been doing a
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: lot of that. Just some good education there and uh
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: so I think you've got kids try hard, to try hard,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: to to take advantage and in the best way possible
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: to take advantage of the situation to maybe do some
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: things you don't normally have time to do with your youngsters,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: and hopefully they'll not come out of this, uh you know,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: any more scarred than you need to be from being
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: removed from their friends and their schools for so long. Yeah,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: it's overwhelming for him too. We we I think we
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: roughly did that at the same time because we uh
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I had mentioned to you that we had quit listening
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: to the morning news while everybody was having breakfast because
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: the kids are just having too many sort of scary
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: thoughts and asking questions about their elders and uh, the
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: longevity of their elders lives, etcetera. So that's funny because
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: that's where we want up getting hund up. We want
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: up getting hung up on grandma's and grandpa's. Yeah, now
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: I think you go, it's worth mentioning to that. The
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: whole reason that you're work, you're kind of beat by
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: the COVID and you're forced to do this podcast is
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: because we're taking it seriously the sole social distancing thing
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: and uh, you know, locked up in our houses and
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: trying to you know, do be doing our civic duty.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: To hopefully help this thing uh get better soon, and
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: uh hopefully everybody else has taken it as seriously. Yeah,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: I'll tell you, um, you know, when you guys first
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: got back to Mexico and and uh I brought over
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: a grocery run for you guys, uh, and and maintaining
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the social distance, and and my little buddy, your youngest
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: you know, easily eight out of ten times I come
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: to your house, I you know, pick the little guy
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: up and give him a big hug, and having to
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: stop him short and the three of us yelling at
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: him not to come any closer, like wait, wait, wait,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: wait wait, Yeah, what a horrible I mean, damn near
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: cried on the way home, like that is just it's terrible.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: So I really do feel for you parents out there,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: because I'm seeckeningly independent and selfish over here in my
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: in my garage. So yeah, it's hard on everybody. Man, um,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: I really you can't even tell you it's I think
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: that if it was happening for natural reasons, like if
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: I was just up at my fish shack for a
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: couple of weeks with my family, I wouldn't be like, man,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: do I miss my friends? But just knowing that you can't,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: um carry on the way you carry on, and that I,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: you know, not able to hang out with you guys.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: It's like, uh yeah, it's like it's it's it's hurtful.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: It's it's hurt I don't like it. I miss everybody. Um.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: When this is over, I think we'll all probably look
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: at each other differently. Um, But yeah, we're gonna wrap
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: it up for now and take care of your take
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: care of your family, take care of your friends, take
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: care of your community, take care of your country, you know,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: kind of in that order. Be respectful when you get outside,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: but get outside. Yeah, we'll all get through this. Talk
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: to you guys soon to
