- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Last episode we were at the airport. Today, let's go somewhere more relaxing. Luna: Ooh, I'm ready. Where are we going? Lucas: A bakery! A classic Hong Kong bakery. You know, the ones with the glass cases full of buns and egg tarts. Luna: Oh, I love those. The smell is amazing. Okay, what do I need to say? Lucas: First, the most basic thing: pointing and saying 'I want this.' In Cantonese, that's 我要呢個. Let's break it down slowly. Luna: 我要呢個... 我要呢個. Lucas: Perfect. 我 means 'I', 要 means 'want', 呢個 means 'this'. So 我要呢個. Luna: 我要呢個. Got it. And then they tell me the price? Lucas: Exactly. So you need to ask 'how much is it?' That's 幾多錢. Let's hear you say it. Luna: 幾多錢? 幾多錢? That sounds like 'gay doh chin' right? Lucas: Yes! 幾多 means 'how many', and 錢 means 'money'. So 幾多錢. Great. Luna: Okay, so I point at a bun and say 我要呢個, then ask 幾多錢. Then I pay. What if I want to say it's tasty? Lucas: You can say 好好食. 好 means 'very', 好食 means 'tasty'. So 好好食 means 'very tasty' or 'delicious'. Luna: 好好食. I like that. So let's practice a little scene. Lucas: Sure. Let's say you're at the bakery counter. You see a pineapple bun — 菠蘿包. You say...? Luna: 我要呢個. 幾多錢? Lucas: The baker says ten dollars. You buy it and take a bite. You say? Luna: 好好食! Lucas: Perfect! Now let's add a couple more items. How about a sausage bun? That's 腸仔包. Luna: 腸仔包. Sounds like 'cheung jai baau'. Lucas: Exactly. And an egg tart is 蛋撻. That's 'daan taat'. Luna: 蛋撻. I love egg tarts. So I could say 我要菠蘿包, 我要腸仔包, 我要蛋撻. Lucas: Yes! And you can combine them: 我要菠蘿包同腸仔包. But for now, just pointing and saying 我要呢個 is fine. Luna: Okay, let me try a full order. I point at a pineapple bun: 我要呢個. 幾多錢? They say ten dollars. I pay and say 好好食. Lucas: Nailed it. You just ordered in Cantonese. Let's repeat the phrases one more time. Luna: Sure: 我要呢個, 幾多錢, 好好食, 菠蘿包, 腸仔包, 蛋撻. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese, you might want to help us keep making these. Luna: Yeah, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. Lucas: It's a small thing that keeps the show ad-free. Anyway, back to the bakery — next time you go, try using 我要呢個 and 幾多錢. See how it feels. Luna: I will. Practice these till we chat again. Lucas: See you next time. Keep 好好食! Luna: 拜拜!
