Latest / Sea Hawkers Podcast: for Seattle Seahawks fans / Seahawks vs Niners Postgame: A Turnover Fest Turns South
Transcript
- 0:09Hello, and welcome to the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 0:12I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, and I am joined by my good buddy Adam Emmert,
- 0:16as our Seattle Seahawks lose to the San Francisco 49ers 32-29 or, I, I mean, if
- 0:25we were to count it properly- … how, how do we count this with as many
- 0:29turnovers, like gifted points?
- 0:32I really…
- 0:32This really deserves a deep dive into how many earned points versus
- 0:36gifted points in this game, Adam.
- 0:38Yeah, and kinda for both sides as well.
- 0:40It's not like that we didn't get a couple turnovers and, score points off that.
- 0:44The difference being 49ers punched it in for touchdowns and we settled
- 0:47for field goals there, and that's one of the big differences in the game.
- 0:50But before we get into all of it, I talked a lotta [catfish] going into this game.
- 0:55And so just, straight off the rip here, congratulations to the 49ers.
- 1:00You guys won today in, yeah, another early in the season victory for you guys.
- 1:06We'll see on down the road.
- 1:07But I think one thing that we can say after coming out of this game is that,
- 1:11both teams are of high quality.
- 1:15And tough loss though.
- 1:17Tough loss to stomach, especially when your offense Looks like it does
- 1:22throughout pretty much this entire game.
- 1:23Yeah, with as many gifted points before halftime, that was…
- 1:28It ended up being an entertaining game, which w- it made me happy
- 1:32ultimately, and I thought we could still pull out the victory, but
- 1:36man, oh, man, that last drive.
- 1:38You hit JSN over the middle, you get to midfield, and then for it to stall
- 1:43out, for, JSN to have a ball that essentially hits him in the hands,
- 1:48that, yeah, it was a little bit behind him, but you expect him to catch.
- 1:51Cooper Kupp diving for the first down as he's going out of bounds, and,
- 1:55y- they don't get the call there.
- 1:58They go with the call on the field.
- 2:00It, it's tough without, like, an overhead view of that, to-
- 2:04Yeah … the way they called it, so, they weren't gonna overturn it.
- 2:07And we got Gambling Goat.
- 2:08We got other- And not the reason we lost the game.
- 2:09And not the reason we lost.
- 2:10It wasn't the reason we lost the game, no, no.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:11yeah, you don't wanna have to rely on that.
- 2:13But, we got lots of 12s joining us in chat.
- 2:16Gambling Goat, member for 14 months.
- 2:19Appreciate you joining in.
- 2:20We got The Snail saying, "I hate everything about that game.
- 2:23Offense, bad coaching, bad defense in the fourth quarter.
- 2:26For the third game in the row, bad."
- 2:28I wanna hit on that for a second.
- 2:29Ryan911, our live executive producer with a 9.99
- 2:34Super Chat, "Go Hawks.
- 2:35Ready for the rematch."
- 2:37Rematch is gonna be fun, Adam.
- 2:38But, yeah, I went from being mad at the offense for, t- giving,
- 2:46gifting them points early on, to then being excited about the offense that
- 2:51they, y- and the defense for getting us back into it, and then being upset at
- 2:57Josh Jobe and the defense for letting the Niners drive down the field.
- 3:00And, old man Mike Evans, looked like young man Mike
- 3:05Evans against Josh Jobe and just- Yeah … abused him down the field.
- 3:09And, then, yeah, I was, then I was mad at the defense at the end a little
- 3:13bit more, and then, you know, it, they, I, some coaching, throw in some
- 3:18coaching anger in there, too, I suppose.
- 3:20Well, interesting that, you kind of phrased it all out that
- 3:23way because what you just described was a rollercoaster, and that game
- 3:27was absolutely a rollercoaster.
- 3:29My notebook is chock-full of stuff that we can go through and talk about.
- 3:34But Brandan, where do you wanna start?
- 3:35Do you wanna start with the offense or the defense?
- 3:38Because I have, actually a fair amount of positives to say about the defense.
- 3:44I think for the most part, they were freaking fantastic today.
- 3:48we can talk about the Evans versus Jobe matchup.
- 3:51That, that definitely was a lowlight of it.
- 3:53Or we can go to the offensive side of the ball, and we can talk about
- 3:56some of the dysfunction there.
- 3:59Oh, we can start off with the offense because it started there early with
- 4:03another first drive turnover by Sam Darnold, and, and I can already see
- 4:07in chat that people are calling for Drew Lock, they're calling for Holani
- 4:12to be cut because he gifted a…
- 4:14Well, and the entire first half was framed by Seattle gifted turnovers, one
- 4:19by Darnold and then Holani at the end.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:23and wasn't there another turnover in the first half as well?
- 4:27Wasn't there three- There was another turnover in there too Yeah.
- 4:28Yeah.
- 4:29Yeah, so you know, that's- 'Cause it was the punch out though.
- 4:31That, and that one, the Fred Warner punch out is the one that I can…
- 4:34Like, I'll take that one 'cause Fred Warner's really good.
- 4:37It was a- Yeah … a great punch out, and, like, those
- 4:40types of turnovers I can accept.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:42It's the ones where it's, you know, throwing an out route that you shouldn't
- 4:45have thrown, or, throwing, or y- when you should've knelt before
- 4:51the half because the punt backed you up inside- Okay … your five yard line.
- 4:55You have 20 seconds.
- 4:56There is entirely zero chance that you're going to drive anywhere on the field.
- 5:01Like, only bad things can happen.
- 5:03just take the knee going to halftime.
- 5:05Yes, the Niners had three timeouts and they could have used
- 5:09them, but were they going to?
- 5:10Probably not.
- 5:12Negative.
- 5:12They were not going to.
- 5:13And right before that sequence I looked at Brittany and I was like,
- 5:17"Just take a knee, go into halftime.
- 5:19You know, it's a close game."
- 5:20I don't know, what was it at that point?
- 5:2213, four- or 14-13?
- 5:2414-13 going into halftime- Yeah … and then it was 21-13 after the fumble.
- 5:27Yeah, for like no reason.
- 5:29For no reason.
- 5:29I don't understand why you'd run a play there.
- 5:31If you wanna tell me, "Well, they had timeouts, so what are we gonna do?"
- 5:34Okay, then kneel it three times.
- 5:36Like, I, yeah, I, I don't understand.
- 5:39Like, you can do this no matter what, and they had room to do it.
- 5:42What, you lose a half yard every kneel down?
- 5:44And I think- Yeah, or you could, or you can try and do a quarterback
- 5:46sneak or d- just go up the middle.
- 5:48Yeah, just secure the ball, go straight.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51Secure ball, go straight.
- 5:52I didn't understand that at all with 18 seconds, like, there's, there's just
- 5:56no reason to run a play there, right?
- 5:58You definitely didn't have to.
- 6:00And that was, honestly, there you go, right there, that cheapie right there-
- 6:05Yeah … that, that gives up the game for you as you end up losing by three.
- 6:10Super frustrating.
- 6:11I don't understand if that comes from Coach Mike or Coach Fleury,
- 6:13or maybe it's a combination.
- 6:15I don't know, but that was a major coaching mistake.
- 6:18So let's put that on the coaches, but let's move over
- 6:21and talk a little bit about Sam.
- 6:23And- All right.
- 6:24Before we do that- Yeah … get to Carly Perkins and her super chat.
- 6:27That sucked, but the fact that they barely beat us when we gifted
- 6:31them 21 points gives me hope.
- 6:33There's still plenty of season left, we just need a running back.
- 6:35do we need more than a running back, Adam?
- 6:38You were just about to talk j- about Sam Darnold.
- 6:40well, if we're gonna talk about Sam, look, you're gonna have highs
- 6:46and you're gonna have lows, and right now we're in amidst of lows for Sam.
- 6:51He's not seeing it well at all.
- 6:53Like, the, the first interception, I've only got to see a replay because thanks
- 6:57to Fox I got to watch the disgusting ending of, Giants-Commanders
- 7:01instead of the majority of the first quarter of our football game.
- 7:03But, after seeing the replay, terrible ball, can't be throwing it there.
- 7:08He held the ball forever on multiple occasions and took sacks.
- 7:13Now, not every sack was on Sam.
- 7:15There was a boot later in the game that Charles Cross sets inside instead
- 7:19of outside on a boot to his side.
- 7:21I, I don't understand that.
- 7:23That can't be the way that's coached.
- 7:25It can't.
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:26yeah.
- 7:27And they've been- And it didn't look like the defender made, like, a big, you know,
- 7:31jump to the outside right at the snap.
- 7:33It, it- No, Cross set inside.
- 7:36So, I think what we need to do to help Sam kinda get going is on the
- 7:40first pass play of every half, we bring in Drew Lock for that play, and
- 7:46then we let Sam go for the rest of it.
- 7:47Because both of his picks were on, I believe, his first pass
- 7:50attempt of each freaking half.
- 7:53Yeah.
- 7:54And then, and then it was relatively fine.
- 7:57But- It was okay, but that's the thing.
- 7:59Like, the, let's talk about the last sequence then, it going
- 8:02down the, the stretch there.
- 8:04So on second down he holds the ball forever.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:08Finally scrambles out to his right.
- 8:10He does have A.J.
- 8:11Barner, but throws it above and behind him.
- 8:13It's just not a good ball.
- 8:15Is it catchable?
- 8:16Yes.
- 8:17But not a good ball.
- 8:18Then the ball to JSN, again, you put that out just in front of him a
- 8:21little bit instead of where he has to contort himself, that's a first down.
- 8:26There's multiple balls that Sam threw in this game that he got away with,
- 8:30that he probably shouldn't because the ball placement is God awful right now.
- 8:35He's turning down open dudes for shorter completions to try to hunt down field.
- 8:41He did that multiple times today.
- 8:43Mm-hmm.
- 8:43And th- we gotta speed up the clock a little bit here and get him
- 8:47going, but this is, this is, this is not looking good for Sam.
- 8:52It, this feels like a regression to this point.
- 8:55And, yeah, give the 49ers some credit too.
- 8:58They generated more pressure than I thought that they would be
- 9:00able to in this game as a whole.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:02Offensive line was very up and down today, but Sam's not in good condition.
- 9:06They had, they had stretches where the run blocking looked great.
- 9:08They had stretches where Sam had a nice clean pocket, and then there were
- 9:12others where they just got bullied.
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:15also too, you look at the 49ers and the way they were playing defense
- 9:20throughout the majority of the game, on first down they were playing a ton
- 9:23of five-man fronts and loading the box.
- 9:25And we kept just trying to run it into them, and I understand you gotta do
- 9:28that some, like no doubt about it.
- 9:30But the Niners were constantly ahead of the chains, especially
- 9:33in the second half or really the fourth quarter, whereas the Hawks
- 9:37were constantly behind the chains.
- 9:39Right.
- 9:40And look, if they're…
- 9:42Then Fleury actually had a nice solution to this, starting out, I believe, at the
- 9:46beginning of the fourth quarter or the, maybe the beginning of the second half.
- 9:50let's see, where do I have that written down here?
- 9:52I think it must have been, yeah.
- 9:53early in the third quarter, went to th- some 13 personnel, and
- 9:57they were really able to just jelly it right down the Niners' throats,
- 10:00and then we just went away from it.
- 10:04Just never appeared again.
- 10:06Shane Turner acoustic with a 299 super chat.
- 10:10the plus is Sam's next contract is getting cheaper, and then we
- 10:14got Bloomie coming in saying Sam is saving us 60 million next year.
- 10:17Saying the hell gone.
- 10:18Attested joke, Bloomie.
- 10:20We got, - Holy Hannah.
- 10:22Yes, a $50 super chat by Horror Gist CD saying, "Hey boys, I kind of feel
- 10:29like I did last year about this time when Sam threw 1,200 interceptions to
- 10:33the Rams and we lost by a few points.
- 10:36Love you guys.
- 10:36Thank you for being you."
- 10:37Thank you for the very generous, super chat, and, yeah, the-- maybe we can
- 10:44now get to-- maybe we're just getting to the point where Ernest Jones can tell
- 10:49us all to, to F off again about talking about Sam, and they can go undefeated.
- 10:54So maybe we're just getting to that point a little bit earlier this year.
- 10:57Maybe that is the pattern.
- 10:59Maybe Sam goes on a, a run from here on out.
- 11:02But the ball security has been atrocious, and look, he leads the league in,
- 11:07turnovers last year, and it's looking like he's on track to do that this year
- 11:11if he doesn't already, with missing a couple games with the butt stuff.
- 11:16it's just- Maybe it's the beginning of the season that's not working for him,
- 11:22because this 49ers defense isn't amazing.
- 11:25It's not.
- 11:26And I mean, they're good enough, they're an average defense, but look, the
- 11:31defense, the Seattle defense played well enough to keep you in this game, to give
- 11:37you a chance to win this game, and you definitely should have won this game if
- 11:41you didn't just, I don't know, just give the ball to the Niners 17,000 times.
- 11:46On defense, Byron Murphy on the day was- Good … a clear standout with
- 11:51two sacks, three tackles for a loss.
- 11:54they had six overall, so he accounted for half of them.
- 11:58They had nine quarterback hits, he accounted for a third of them.
- 12:01Byron Murphy had a day today.
- 12:04Byron Murphy had a monster day.
- 12:06Look, man, I really felt like we would see the next evolution of the Aaron
- 12:12Donalds of the world in Byron Murphy this year, and it is coming true.
- 12:16just an absolute joy to watch.
- 12:19He was just all over the field, just wreaking havoc.
- 12:23Just a fantastic day by him.
- 12:24I actually thought the pass rush as a whole was pretty darn good.
- 12:28Where I was disappointed, I think it was second and…
- 12:32Or no, third and 10, on the touchdown drive the Niners had late
- 12:36in the game, and we had none of our best pass rushers out there- Yeah
- 12:40for that third and 10.
- 12:41Like, I'd rather have gas Leo Williams and gas Byron Murphy than Riley Mills
- 12:47and Jarran Reed or whoever else was out there, but just remember thinking
- 12:51that was kind of unacceptable.
- 12:53You give up a second and 21 on that drive with Josh Jobe getting turned around-
- 12:58Mm-hmm … in man to man coverage.
- 13:01Mike Evans, he abused Josh Jobe, especially on fourth down.
- 13:05Oh, yeah.
- 13:05Yeah, he won the Niners the game.
- 13:07Seven receptions- Yeah … 113 yards.
- 13:09He had the touchdown.
- 13:11He had the, the longest catch of the day was 28 yards.
- 13:14Only 14 yards after the catch, so, you know, it's not like he was, they were
- 13:19getting, beat on defense with a lot of catch and runs, but it was a lot of
- 13:23tho- like, a lot of those long plays.
- 13:26And then I, I was waiting to see, okay, are they gonna continue to spam Mike
- 13:30Evans then after that touchdown drive?
- 13:33And then they just went on the ground to McCaffrey for a lot of that next
- 13:36drive, and, a- and ran the clock out, and I think that's when they
- 13:41got the f- the go-ahead field goal.
- 13:43So, yeah, they didn't go to Mike Evans at all on that final field
- 13:47goal drive, so I wasn't sure if, you know, that- that'll be something to
- 13:50look at afterward to see if maybe they gave him some extra attention.
- 13:53Were they doing anything differently, or did the Niners just decide, "Okay, well,
- 13:56we're not going that way because, they're, they're going to be prepared for
- 14:01that after we spammed him last drive"?
- 14:03Yeah, late in the game they definitely got eight up in the run
- 14:05game, and it was right up the gut.
- 14:07It was a bunch of duo, just running it right down your throat.
- 14:11And the Hawks haven't been fantastic against duo all year as a run defense, and
- 14:16it was exploited late in that game when they needed it the most, and Mike Evans
- 14:19made huge plays going down the stretch.
- 14:22look, Brock Purdy looked like Brock Purdy in this game, too.
- 14:26I mean- Not amazing.
- 14:28- No … a lot of underneath stuff.
- 14:30A lot of what we expected, yeah.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:3219 to 29, 189 yards.
- 14:35He had the two touchdowns, he had the one interception, and, sacked three times.
- 14:39So it, it does feel like we got…
- 14:42Yeah.
- 14:43It, it, what…
- 14:43Well, it didn't need to be an amazing stat line because they got touchdowns
- 14:46when they needed to, they had short fields because of the turnovers- Yeah
- 14:50and they capitalized on them.
- 14:52And, and then, yeah, when it mattered most at the end, getting the field
- 14:57goal drive was critical, that, that entire drive, especially with the third and long.
- 15:00That was…
- 15:01He had the good drive that, that won the game.
- 15:04And, that, that was probably why I was most frustrated at the end because
- 15:10we were in it and, and then, yeah, he was d- We, we, we got beat by Purdy
- 15:16on the, at, at the end W- well, we got beat by having to put the game in the
- 15:22offense's hands going down the stretch, and th- that really was it right there.
- 15:27I, I honestly did not feel confident at all with two minutes left and,
- 15:32you know, you're putting the ball in Sam's hands, and we're gonna
- 15:34have to sling it all over the yard.
- 15:36didn't feel like we were gonna come away with that at that point.
- 15:40But, you know, you put yourself in that big of a hole in terms
- 15:44of giving up 21 cheapies early, and it's gonna be really, really
- 15:50difficult to win any of those games.
- 15:52And, you know, the turnover statistics don't even look as bad as it ought
- 15:55to because Holani has what probably could have been a touchdown, what
- 16:00just squirt out of his arm as he's just- Yeah … running wide open down
- 16:03the sideline with nobody around him.
- 16:05Like, we talk- we joke about the turf monster tripping peoples up.
- 16:07Did the turf monster have a peanut punch?
- 16:10Like I don't know.
- 16:11Either that or he, he had, greased up biceps, because yeah, he had
- 16:15that turnover where he wasn't touched, and then he barely got touched in the
- 16:19end zone when he gave up the other one.
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:21So, yeah.
- 16:23It, it just super frustrating with the turnovers, and that if JSN
- 16:28catches that pass at the end, I, I know he, he had to contort himself,
- 16:33but if he catches that, then shoot.
- 16:35They're probably even in field, field goal range at that point, and maybe it's
- 16:38a tie game, goes to overtime then we see.
- 16:41But, yeah, just, …
- 16:44I, I hate that it came down to that.
- 16:46I hate that it came down to the sideline, and a lot of people still
- 16:49asking about, because you had that side view, Adam, right, of Kupp.
- 16:56it- we, we saw the view of where his feet were tiptoeing the sideline.
- 17:01We had the side view of where he reached out over the line to gain, but we
- 17:07didn't- the, the rule is, right, for the sidelines, that if you're out…
- 17:13It- it's where the ball crosses the sideline as you're going out, right?
- 17:18It's not…
- 17:18It's different than- Yeah
- 17:19the end zone, right?
- 17:20To where you have the entire…
- 17:22If that play would've happened on the- Like the plane continues forever.
- 17:24Yeah.
- 17:24The plane continues forever on the end zone, but when you're on the sidelines,
- 17:28I don't know why it works that way, but it, it's different on the sideline, right?
- 17:33Yes, it is different on the sideline.
- 17:35Look, we're about to have AI overlords that makes, all of
- 17:37us obsolete, including me and you, Brandan, in the podcast space.
- 17:41But if we're that close to that sort of technology, how is there
- 17:45not three chips in the ball?
- 17:47Like, one in the middle and one on each end, like, with a, with a GPS geo-fence
- 17:53around the sideline that, like, you can just see where the ball go- I, I can't
- 17:58figure that out for the life of me.
- 17:59That can't be expensive.
- 18:00It can't be hard.
- 18:01Hell, I have a GPS tracker for my freaking dog.
- 18:04Like, for my dog.
- 18:05We can't have one in an NFL football?
- 18:07A billionaire corpor- or, you know, billion-dollar corp- organization.
- 18:10You know, you gotta have how many footballs chipped?
- 18:12But yeah, I, I…
- 18:13It's, …
- 18:15They could do it, I'm sure.
- 18:16But, oh well.
- 18:18it's, it's not gonna happen this year.
- 18:20It's not gonna change this game.
- 18:22Niners get the win.
- 18:24Their defense, while they were down Dre Greenlaw, with, the headbu- after
- 18:31the headbutt to Ernest Jones, he ends up getting ej- ejected from the game.
- 18:36That, ended up impacting their defense too, I'm sure.
- 18:40But, yeah, the, the- they had-- they seemed to struggle a
- 18:44little bit with us Niners defense.
- 18:45Running the ball, it, it, it…
- 18:48I can see why, and I know I am very excited to get Zach Charbonnet back
- 18:54because, you know, even Emanuel Wilson, while he does get positive yards, it's…
- 19:00Gosh, he got tackled with, when, when Fred Warner's hand touched his thigh.
- 19:04Oh, gosh.
- 19:05Yeah, there was a handful of runs for Wilson where there was space for him to
- 19:09operate and just gets barely tripped up, and he's supposed to be, like, this power
- 19:13back, and it's super frustrating to see.
- 19:15I, I really, really…
- 19:17I don't, I, I I've seen Mike in the comments here, Mike John, saying,
- 19:20"Chips in the ball don't help that."
- 19:22I guess I don't follow.
- 19:24I, I, I can't understand how in the world that, - Spatially it
- 19:28should be able to tell what, you know, have all the GPS in it, right?
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32This isn't…
- 19:33It's, it's literally not rocket surgery.
- 19:35But, - … whatever.
- 19:36what were we just talking about?
- 19:38back to, - Emanuel Wilson- Emanuel Wilson
- 19:41not being a very dynamic runner.
- 19:43Look, I mean, if we're gonna get the ball security that we're getting out of
- 19:46our current backs, like, I'd rather have Jadarian out there when he's healthy.
- 19:50Like, if you're gonna get the turnovers anyways, I'd might
- 19:52as well take the explosiveness.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:57Yeah, Mike's saying need to know where the ball is- We're talk-
- 19:59and when the guy was down.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:00No, no, we're talking about when the ball goes out of bounds, right?
- 20:04Like it- Out of bounds or over the goal line … it breaks the plane.
- 20:06Yeah, it's- Right, like breaks that out of bounds plane.
- 20:08The, the chips in the ball would absolutely solve that
- 20:11issue, but I, I don't know.
- 20:12Maybe, maybe we need more chips.
- 20:13It- maybe there's a lot more complicated m- factors that we need to think about.
- 20:17I don't know.
- 20:17They figure it out for my dog.
- 20:20Yeah, but I, I think what he's saying is you need to know where the knee is,
- 20:23whether they're down, where it's, where it is in relation, like how having that
- 20:27all timed up might be difficult to, - I don't think that'd be difficult.
- 20:31Like if the guy's knee goes down, you can see the timestamp, and
- 20:34then you just, you know, see where the ball is at that timestamp.
- 20:38Like, I don't- Yeah … I don't know.
- 20:39I don't know.
- 20:40It, it's, it's…
- 20:42You know, for as much…
- 20:43Th- they have trouble, like, measuring a, a, you know, the chains when it's
- 20:47going to the electronic measurement, and we know- I can't stand it
- 20:50how long that that takes, so that's, I, I'm, I- What was wrong with the chains?
- 20:54I, I'm, I'm for the manual chains, so that's why- Yeah … I'm thinking
- 20:57that once we chip the ball, it's gonna introduce all this other
- 21:00kinda stuff to where we go, "Oh my gosh, I wish we just had our normal
- 21:03football back without the chip."
- 21:05I don't know.
- 21:05I'd be willing to give it a rip.
- 21:06If it doesn't work, that's fine.
- 21:07Yeah.
- 21:07But, yeah, a- again, the spot on the fourth down, not the reason at
- 21:12all that this team lost this football game in any way, shape, or form.
- 21:16You can't turn the ball over four times and expect to win a football game.
- 21:19Like, so we basically now have, dropped two out of the last
- 21:23three, and the first one that we dropped is because of turnovers.
- 21:27Then, the next game, we barely eke out and win, even though it felt like a loss
- 21:32because of penalties, and then we lose this game primarily because of turnovers.
- 21:37So those are all three, three games there that are all within your
- 21:42control to some degree, and you're letting it slip out of your grasp.
- 21:46it, it's gotta be a tough pill for Coach Mike to swallow when the defense
- 21:51as a whole is playing pretty well.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53And in a game where I, I think that this could have a strong
- 21:59impact on playoff seeding.
- 22:00This is a game at home.
- 22:01It's one you should win, especially if, if you were to not turn the ball
- 22:06over the way that you did, and now they're in a hole in the division where
- 22:11you're two games back of the leader.
- 22:13You know, if the Rams somehow, they're able to beat the Bills, then
- 22:16you're tied with the Rams, and, it, it feels like we played better
- 22:20than the Rams overall to this point.
- 22:22HardgeCD, with the $10 Super Chat.
- 22:26Back in.
- 22:26Back in, yeah.
- 22:27Wow.
- 22:27executive producer for the show.
- 22:30Take that credit.
- 22:30I'm mostly pissed that Purdy is still undefeated at Lumen.
- 22:34I know, regular season.
- 22:36I don't know why that's an important distinction- … but evidently it is.
- 22:40No, it's really funny.
- 22:41I mean, a- again, it kinda just shows you how stats can lie, to a degree, right?
- 22:46You can find a stat to support just about anything that you, you want it to support.
- 22:50But yeah, the- It felt like Kyle Shanahan was outclassed in this
- 22:55game, you know, when it came to Mike's defense versus his offense,
- 23:00pretty much the entire football game, and yet you still end up losing.
- 23:04that gets difficult.
- 23:05I mean, maybe this was, Fleury the mole, that, was dooming
- 23:11us here in this particular football game, but- I, I don't know if he could
- 23:15have, coached Holani into that fumble, despite running the play.
- 23:19Like you, you still, you shouldn't fumble the ball right there, even if you
- 23:23decide to run the play that they did.
- 23:25and Sam doesn't, definitely doesn't need to turn it over at the, at the
- 23:29first pass, for, for each half.
- 23:32Nick's coming in saying, "Do you guys really think we can turn things around?
- 23:36This seems to be who this team is this year."
- 23:40has, through, five games, have, have we defined our Seahawks team, Adam?
- 23:45So we're what?
- 23:4726.5%
- 23:49through the season since it's, you know, the, it, it's not neatly broken
- 23:52up into four-game stretches anymore.
- 23:54I feel like teams usually have two to three lives throughout a season in
- 23:58terms of how they're playing and what it looks like, and yeah, absolutely
- 24:03this football team can turn this around.
- 24:06again, it's not like you're getting blowed out.
- 24:08You barely lost to the Commanders, you barely lose to the 49ers, and
- 24:13it's not like you played your best ball and still just didn't come
- 24:17up, as big as you wanted to.
- 24:20This is, you played terrible football on offense in two of those, in both of
- 24:25the losses, and you just barely lost.
- 24:28So that feels like something that is fixable, especially when there are,
- 24:33there is cavalry on the way between Price and Charbonnet coming back.
- 24:37I do think that helps settle Sam down eventually as well.
- 24:41Yeah.
- 24:41Fernando saying, "So far I would take Joe Mixon's foot over Holani's hands."
- 24:46I thought that was funny.
- 24:47Kevin saying, "It seems like we had a quarterback for the first
- 24:50two games of the season who didn't throw two interceptions a game."
- 24:53that's a true fact.
- 24:55I- Mm-hmm … I think you get to a point, I don't know when that
- 24:59point is though, to where you have to say, "This is not acceptable.
- 25:04We have to move to Drew."
- 25:06back-to-back games?
- 25:09Two more- Two more?
- 25:10Two more, two more games of multiple turnovers out of Sam.
- 25:13- Yeah … and, and not only that, but like, they've gotta be, they've gotta be
- 25:17like the turnovers that he's committing right now, where you're just like,
- 25:21like the second interception- Right, it's not off a dude's hands and into a
- 25:23defender or those kind of interceptions.
- 25:25Right.
- 25:25You're, no, you're talking about where you throw it to the other
- 25:28team to start one of the halves.
- 25:29Yeah.
- 25:30So look, the second interception.
- 25:33Arroyo runs a just god-awful route.
- 25:36That, that's a terrible route.
- 25:38Like, when you square that off and start running to the sideline,
- 25:41like, you have to get horizontal or even start coming downhill to the
- 25:46quarterback- Right, you don't allow the defender then to get underneath.
- 25:48That's right.
- 25:49And instead he drifts way up field.
- 25:51It's an awful route.
- 25:52With that said, even if he had run a good route, the ball was far enough behind
- 25:56Arroyo that it wouldn't have mattered.
- 25:58Like- Right … so that's wh- again, one of those turnovers that I would
- 26:01say, "Damn, Sam," like, that's not good.
- 26:04And you get two more games of that and I think it's, I think it's time to
- 26:08call for Lock or Milroe, you know?
- 26:11Yeah.
- 26:12Two more games.
- 26:12Okay.
- 26:13I, I felt like, we could get to at least- So we aren't, calling for it,
- 26:19you know, seeming to call for it.
- 26:22We, we have- we've put some guidelines together now for, for ourselves.
- 26:25It sounds like for some of the people in chat, they've already,
- 26:28found that distinction and that they're ready to move on.
- 26:30But I think that just for the sake of your team, like the buy-in feels
- 26:35like it's with Sam as being the better quarterback, and I, I just wonder if,
- 26:43we would end up with a better outcome overall if, yeah, if- Are we winning
- 26:48a Super Bowl if we go to Drew Lock?
- 26:51Yeah, that's…
- 26:51And that's, I guess, the question.
- 26:53Are you more likely to win a Super Bowl with Drew Lock?
- 26:55I mean, maybe you could say yes at this point, but then again, like
- 26:59we've seen Sam win a Super Bowl as a- … starting quarterback and
- 27:03have back-to-back fantastic seasons.
- 27:06What we haven't seen is Drew Lock ever put together a stretch of football like that.
- 27:10We saw him play two good games.
- 27:12That's great.
- 27:13Yeah, one good game.
- 27:14But- One okay game.
- 27:15Fair enough.
- 27:16Fair enough.
- 27:17And that's no guarantee.
- 27:19I'm not sure it even makes you better per se, because Drew's bugaboo is the
- 27:24same bugaboo that Sam Darnold has.
- 27:27Drew's a turnover machine at his time in Denver.
- 27:30That's how he ended up in Seattle, and that's why he's not a
- 27:32starter in this league right now.
- 27:34Right.
- 27:34And so, yeah, that's why you made the qualifier, I think, well, maybe Milroe.
- 27:39But, also why he slipped to the third round.
- 27:43Right?
- 27:44but we also, also have seen the growth out of Milroe.
- 27:47We don't have a zillion seasons of Sam Darnold to look at and say,
- 27:51"Okay, this is aggregate what he is."
- 27:53Same with Drew Lock.
- 27:54Milroe's a bit of an unknown.
- 27:56But if we wanna talk about Sam's struggles, like we gotta
- 27:59start wondering, like is this a little bit of a Fleury issue?
- 28:03Is he having a hard time processing these reads?
- 28:07Like, is it…
- 28:08Is it not set up in his mind that makes sense?
- 28:10Because it looks like he's, he's so slow at his processing right now,
- 28:14and isn't trusting what he's seeing.
- 28:16We heard last year time and time again, and it's the way the West Coast
- 28:20quarterbacking is done, you have to listen to your feet, and it doesn't
- 28:23feel like he's hearing his feet at all.
- 28:25Like, he's so out of rhythm.
- 28:28Yeah.
- 28:29So,
- 28:32yeah, I, I'm not quite sure.
- 28:34I think part of the reason was there's some frustration in
- 28:37Northern Primate saying, "Safe to say this isn't the same Sam."
- 28:40I think we were expecting- But it kind of is, though It kind of
- 28:43is, but it also, it's not the Sam that we saw through the playoffs.
- 28:47And I think that after the playoffs, after the Super Bowl win, this
- 28:51off-season we were talking about how, okay, this, this should give
- 28:56Sam the boost that he really needs.
- 28:58Like, we should see this confidence boost in Sam to be like, "Okay, I'm the
- 29:02guy, and I'm the leader of this team.
- 29:04And, you know, I'm gonna rip it and, feel confident about my throws."
- 29:09And then for these first couple games, coming back after injury, you,
- 29:15you don't, you don't get that feeling.
- 29:18It's true.
- 29:18also too, this feels a lot like the Sam Darnold all the way through
- 29:22the first Rams game Right It's, I mean, so it does, it does feel like
- 29:28this is the same old Sam to a degree.
- 29:30Yeah.
- 29:31And you would hope, you would hope that, yeah, that run in the playoffs
- 29:34and no turnovers would carry over to the next year, but it, it certainly isn't.
- 29:38And I think, you know, seeing a stretch of turnover-free football in the
- 29:42playoffs is not more indicative of who Sam is than, let's say, I don't know,
- 29:47his entire career, where he's been a turnover machine all the way back to USC.
- 29:52Yeah.
- 29:53It's who Sam is.
- 29:55DCH in chat saying, "I still believe in Sam.
- 29:58Sharps and Price will settle this.
- 29:59No need to jump ship yet flock."
- 30:01And I think there's something to this too.
- 30:03It, that, that's why I was saying it's important to set up sideboards because I
- 30:08think- Yeah … that DCH is right here.
- 30:10Like, if you, if you get Sam out there with a competent run game, and
- 30:14you have, Charbonnet back, and he's not turning o- the ball over,
- 30:19you have that complimentary piece in Price, and they're not turning it over.
- 30:22Like, having that as the, the basis of the offense then to where Sam can
- 30:28maybe feel a little more comfortable slinging the ball from the pocket
- 30:31and not feeling like, you know, he's, he's gotta make something happen in
- 30:35s- in certain situations, that, …
- 30:38Waiting for that point, though, at this point, could be hard.
- 30:41It, again, they gave this game away.
- 30:45Okay, if we're gonna speak more about the sideboards here.
- 30:48Okay.
- 30:48Like, let's say Sam has two really sharp games- Mm-hmm … and
- 30:51then two more games like this.
- 30:53Are we…
- 30:54Like, does that count?
- 30:55Like, because he put the two good ones?
- 30:57Or is it just, like, two more consecutive ones and that's it, that's all?
- 31:00Yeah.
- 31:01that's a good question.
- 31:04Okay.
- 31:04Well, I don't know.
- 31:05I, I guess- Yeah … I have to wait and see.
- 31:07I think what DCH is saying, we have to kind of wait till we get to that point
- 31:10with the run game to where that is, a, you know, complimentary Yeah, so,
- 31:17so we're basically talking, what, another three to five weeks, depending
- 31:22on when Sharps is back, and then once Jarry comes back- Well, Sharps could be
- 31:24back technically for the Denver game.
- 31:26I don't know if he will be, but maybe it'll give him- Oh,
- 31:28no, he's still way, Brandan.
- 31:29I don't know if you saw the one photo that shows that one leg is way smaller
- 31:33than the other, although one leg was up and flexed, and the other one wasn't.
- 31:36And so, like, it's totally atrophied because he didn't work with- Yeah
- 31:39professional, rehab people apparently or something.
- 31:42It is the dumbest thing.
- 31:43Okay, I did not see that photo floating around.
- 31:46Oh my God, yeah, you know.
- 31:48The Twitterista out there was, was getting after that one, I guess.
- 31:52Well, that's fun.
- 31:52I'll have to go and check out, Zach Sharps's leg photos.
- 31:56But, I could imagine he's maybe not quite ready to be back for Denver.
- 32:02And, if he is, it's not like we're gonna get a steady dose of
- 32:05him in the very first game back.
- 32:07So, yeah, again, we'll go say, and I think I heard that Sharps
- 32:12should be back after the Denver game.
- 32:14So that would make sense 'cause then you have- Yeah … the, you know, the
- 32:18extended, not technically a bye week, but you do have the week and a half
- 32:22between, that and your next game.
- 32:24That's right.
- 32:25That's right.
- 32:26I like this que- if we need Sharps and Price, this is from The Snail, if we
- 32:29need Sharps and Price to make this go, we need to get another top-end running back.
- 32:33Let me, let me float something at you here, Brandan.
- 32:35Okay.
- 32:36This is crazy.
- 32:37So the Eagles are in fire sale mode.
- 32:40Are they, though?
- 32:41I, they're clearly in a, we're moving on to a new era of Eagles football.
- 32:47Yeah.
- 32:47Well, they, Cam Jurgens- We'll say- … though, was a disaster
- 32:50at guard, and so I think that they were ready to make that move anyway.
- 32:54But he was, he moved to center.
- 32:56Did he move to center for Philly?
- 32:58Yeah.
- 32:58Mm-hmm, and that's exactly why the Ravens traded for him is because
- 33:01they were desperate for a- Yeah, they wanted him to play center
- 33:02for a center.
- 33:02I thought he had been playing guard, though.
- 33:04No, he, he'd been playing center.
- 33:05Hmm.
- 33:05And then, Lane Johnson retires.
- 33:07I mean, their entire organization's a mess.
- 33:09They already traded AJ Brown, Jalen Hurts ain't it.
- 33:12Like, we've seen the wheels fall off of that.
- 33:14Like, I don't know.
- 33:16Can we get Saquon?
- 33:17Y- yeah, a Saquon trade anyone?
- 33:18Like, I don't know.
- 33:19Man, what do you gotta give up- I know it's crazy … to do that?
- 33:21I don't, I don't know about that.
- 33:22I know.
- 33:23there's a lot of, consequences that could come with
- 33:25that, but something to think about.
- 33:26If it's, if it's, not a lot in terms of draft capital, you
- 33:30might be able to convince me.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:33I'm sure it would have to be- I mean, the reason- I don't know if
- 33:36you're thinking about a busted contract … Natasha's saying no to Barkley is
- 33:38injury prone and is injured now.
- 33:39I mean, that's- Fair … that's part of the reason why that he
- 33:41would be available in trade, though.
- 33:43That's true.
- 33:44It, it, look, I'm just saying if we're gonna entertain the idea of,
- 33:46like, you need to get a top end back to, you know, make this happen,
- 33:50for the offense, then, you know, - You gotta look at which ones would
- 33:56be available, and, there's not a bunch of them that, that would be.
- 34:00Got Niner fan- You have a couple … Brandon in chat saying, "I
- 34:02thought you guys were gonna repeat."
- 34:03The season ain't over, buddy.
- 34:04I know.
- 34:05I love, I love Niner fan.
- 34:06Look, you guys got an early season win last year, and it was adorable.
- 34:11And, and then you still got owned.
- 34:13Congratulations on your early win this year that was, basically gift-wrapped.
- 34:17You made some plays too.
- 34:18Like, I'm not just saying that, you know, you guys
- 34:20don't deserve some credit here.
- 34:22But, I wouldn't be hoisting that Lombardi quite yet, boys.
- 34:26Like, good luck.
- 34:28Marlon in chat saying, "Jonathan Taylor."
- 34:30Hey, I would, I would absolutely trade for Jonathan Taylor.
- 34:32I ain't trading him.
- 34:33I don't think the Colts are…
- 34:33They aren't trading him.
- 34:35No, they're not.
- 34:35You're, you're not getting Jonathan Taylor from the Colts.
- 34:37You're not getting Bijan Robinson from the Falcons.
- 34:39No.
- 34:39it…
- 34:40Tho- those things probably aren't happening, and, yeah,
- 34:44should've just resigned Ken Walker.
- 34:45If he wanted to.
- 34:47If he wanted to, yeah, that's…
- 34:49It, it, it could've been a two-way street type of thing- Yeah
- 34:52for sure.
- 34:53What's Phil got here?
- 34:54"Sam had some great throws and plays, but he just looked,
- 34:57in full confident command yet.
- 34:59But he hasn't looked like in full con- confident command yet.
- 35:02that's where the bun cheeks decisions are coming from.
- 35:05He and Fleury will solve this still."
- 35:07It…
- 35:07Yeah, we do have to remember Fleury's going through some growth himself here,
- 35:11and, you know, the offense didn't look fantastic, on all cylinders the
- 35:16early part of last year with Super Bowl champion Klint Kubiak, who's now
- 35:19doing an awesome job with the Raiders.
- 35:20yeah, there's a- Took the L today.
- 35:23They got, they got beat, pretty badly by the Patriots today.
- 35:26So the Patriots win, is looking a lot better as the season goes on.
- 35:31Yeah, I suppose so.
- 35:32no, Drake, Drake has enough distance now from his two games against
- 35:36the Seahawks to, find his confidence again, so good for him, I guess.
- 35:41Yeah, we, ha- got Matt in Beaverton saying, "What was our
- 35:43record at this time last year?"
- 35:45Yes, it was in fact, 3-2 coming off the loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs, and that
- 35:51ended up working out just fine, didn't it?
- 35:53we got Harjas CD coming back in with a $10 super chat.
- 35:57Also, cue the we should've paid week instead of Josh Jobe.
- 36:01Josh got owned by a first Ballot Hall of Famer that one time talk.
- 36:05I…
- 36:06Look, Josh Jobe got beat in this game.
- 36:08I think that Woolen, y- he got beat pretty good, in, - We lost the first game
- 36:14because of Reekitt and just boneheaded, lost his space on the field and- That's
- 36:19right … messed it up for us And, it was their, their tight end that
- 36:22ended up scoring the go-ahead touchdown.
- 36:24Tanjas, yeah.
- 36:25Tanjas.
- 36:26Yeah, super frustrating.
- 36:27yeah, it, it does highlight though that there is a potential mismatch for
- 36:33this defense going forward, and that is, you know, more big bodied receivers
- 36:37against a smaller co- corner in Jobe.
- 36:39And, Mike Evans took advantage of that all day.
- 36:42He was the only answer the 49ers had on offense, like full stop.
- 36:48Yeah.
- 36:49I, the, the numbers for McCaffrey at the end of the day, 11 carries, 68 yards.
- 36:556.,
- 36:566.2
- 36:57yards per carry, so that's decent.
- 36:58He had the touchdown run.
- 37:00Kaelon Black was under three yards per carry.
- 37:04He did have one 11-yard run.
- 37:06So they held the team in total.
- 37:09I thought they would try and get Deebo the ball a little bit more, but he
- 37:12ended up leaving early due to injury.
- 37:1494 rushing yards on the day.
- 37:17And yeah, out of 189 passing yards, 113 of those went to Evans.
- 37:23Kittle was the next most with 24 yards on five receptions.
- 37:28Yeah, and I didn't know how much Evans was gonna be able to participate in this game.
- 37:33You know, I, I, you know, tip of the cap once again to his effort last
- 37:37week and then what he did this week.
- 37:39and to Tasha's point here, Evans pushing off like crazy all game.
- 37:43a true fact.
- 37:46But They will not call that.
- 37:48They're not gonna call that in this league.
- 37:50This is an offensive centric league and OPI, like, you never see it.
- 37:55Like, it's so- No, especially the way he does it.
- 37:57It's kind of- Mm-hmm … like he doesn't fully extend his arms.
- 38:00He, he does it just to make enough space.
- 38:02That's kind of, y- the Hall of Fame type receivers know how to
- 38:05do that and get away with it.
- 38:07we got Hall of Fame executive producer coming in.
- 38:10Ryan with a 9.99
- 38:11super chat, coming back in just to come back in, say, "Go Hawks."
- 38:15Hey, go Hawks, Ryan.
- 38:16We do appreciate that a ton, and it helps lift our spirits here as we, kind
- 38:20of go through this loss a little bit.
- 38:22Also, too, want to give a shout-out to the 250-ish people that are
- 38:25live with us here right now.
- 38:27Appreciate you guys spending your time with us.
- 38:29And, if you appreciate that we'll come on here and, talk
- 38:33about tough losses for you guys, feel free to hit like and subscribe.
- 38:37That helps us out more than you know, and it's, very much appreciated.
- 38:40So please and thank you.
- 38:41Yes, and we will be back later this week.
- 38:44Getintheflock.com
- 38:45if you want to help support the show.
- 38:47the schedule this week is obviously gonna be way different
- 38:50because, well- Oh, good luck.
- 38:51I don't know … it's a short week, and we're gonna be traveling to Denver, so
- 38:55we can go to the game on Thursday, Adam.
- 38:56That's right.
- 38:57It's, what?
- 38:5812, 13 hours from my place.
- 39:00I think it's, what, 14, 15 hours from your place via car?
- 39:04But you're flying.
- 39:05Yeah, except I'm, I'm driving to Seattle than flying, so, just so I can be in
- 39:09Seattle for the weekend after the game.
- 39:11Mm.
- 39:11So yeah, I, I get to a roundabout way to Denver.
- 39:15Yeah, yeah.
- 39:16So, it's gonna be a little chaotic, but stick with us.
- 39:19We're gonna have more shows for you.
- 39:20it's a little like this Hawks team.
- 39:22Like, yep, little chaotic at the beginning of the year.
- 39:24They still have a winning record.
- 39:25They're right there at the top of the division.
- 39:27It's not like they got blowed out by this 49ers team.
- 39:29It's not like they were outclassed by this 49ers team the entire game.
- 39:33In fact, it looked like they were gonna win this game, late in the game.
- 39:37You know, lot of reasons to be possible.
- 39:39This defense is still ballin', and they are frickin' for real.
- 39:44And it's just gonna take a minute for this offense to find its legs and to find
- 39:48guys with legs to carry the rock and, get this running game jump-started.
- 39:53Definitely a championship defense that we will look forward to
- 39:56watch throughout the season.
- 39:57One more thing before we go, Adam.
- 39:59Yeah.
- 40:00Denver, coming up on Thursday.
- 40:02Okay.
- 40:02It's gonna be in their house.
- 40:03Mm-hmm.
- 40:04How, what is the confidence level coming out of this game, knowing that,
- 40:08and especially as we've watched Denver over this year, over last year- Mm-hmm
- 40:13when they play at home, and even if you get out to a relatively
- 40:17comfortable lead against them- Yeah … in Mile High- That's
- 40:21right … those guys always fight back.
- 40:23And, we saw it in the Rams game, where Rams get up 16 points and you think, "Oh,
- 40:29yeah, the Rams have this in the bag."
- 40:31And then Denver just finds a way, and, allegedly Sean Payton took back
- 40:36over the offensive play calling this week.
- 40:38I don't know if that ends up being in flux now going into this week, or if
- 40:43he's just going to, because they beat the Chargers by a touchdown, that now
- 40:47it's Sean Payton's offense to call again.
- 40:50Yeah.
- 40:50Sean, did not entertain that play calling thing for very long in
- 40:55terms of it not being in his hands and, which is hilarious and not surprising.
- 40:59you asked my confidence level, I'd say about a six and a half.
- 41:02Like, you know, they, slightly above average.
- 41:04Like, this team has all the resources to go in there and, and beat- As long
- 41:08as it's out of 10 and not out of 100.
- 41:09I, I will accept six and a half.
- 41:10Yeah, no, out of a 10.
- 41:11Everything's out of a 10.
- 41:12They…
- 41:12100 is, you know, just gratuitous.
- 41:15Like, you don't need that many points to, you know- Well, then you
- 41:18could go 65 … to grade a team.
- 41:19You don't have to use half points.
- 41:21What's wrong with a half point?
- 41:22I f- I…
- 41:24Some people don't like decimals.
- 41:25Well, those people are Nazis.
- 41:27And, look it up.
- 41:28It's true.
- 41:29And I think with that…
- 41:30There's only one thing left to say.
- 41:32Go Hawks.
- 41:33Go Hawks
