- 0:41Speaker 1: Nap SAT.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yesterday was one of those days which I'll never forget.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Being up to Peru High School with sweethearts and heroes,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and to meet those kids, to sit down with them
- 1:56Speaker 2: and have some real conversations both on the air and
- 2:00Speaker 2: off the air, is just something that is going to
- 2:04Speaker 2: stick to my bones for a long time. There was
- 2:09Speaker 2: so much said that was off the air that really
- 2:12Speaker 2: had quite an impact on me yesterday, and just some
- 2:17Speaker 2: great overall experiences yesterday being up at Peru High School.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Thank you so much to Tom Murphy, Matt Berry, John
- 2:27Speaker 2: Mitchell for setting this up and making it all happen yesterday.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It was an interesting day. There were a lot of
- 2:32Speaker 2: things that happened unexpectedly, which generally I enjoy. Getting on
- 2:41Speaker 2: the ferry was just quite a story yesterday, but it
- 2:47Speaker 2: finally happened. The fairy didn't sink. I made it. I'm alive,
- 2:51Speaker 2: and yeah, it was just wonderful. I hope I'm at
- 2:55Speaker 2: some point back on the invite list. I can't believe
- 2:57Speaker 2: we're just a few days away from Father's Day. Upper fifties.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Right now across central Vermont, we're looking at rain, showers
- 3:05Speaker 2: and sixty five today. It's going to be a steady
- 3:08Speaker 2: rain tonight, thunderstorms on the early side, clearing late and
- 3:13Speaker 2: fifty one Tomorrow. Wednesday partly cloudy, seventy four Hopefully the
- 3:19Speaker 2: motorcycle will be out tomorrow. Really hoping Thursday partly cloudy
- 3:25Speaker 2: and seventy three degrees. I want to say happy birthday
- 3:29Speaker 2: today to Jala Dalton, Chris Madison, Tanya Semperbond, Karen Simons
- 3:35Speaker 2: or is it Simmons. I'm gonna go with Simmons, Drew Brussel,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Nancy Bradshaw, Danny Bird, Jamie, Marie, Sylvia and Tiny we
- 3:44Speaker 2: miss you. And a very happy birthday to Diana Perry
- 3:49Speaker 2: as well. Road construction projects are active this morning. Please
- 3:57Speaker 2: be careful for the rest of the day, day and
- 4:01Speaker 2: on your commute home. I saw some stuff yesterday on
- 4:06Speaker 2: my way back from Peru which was quite alarming, just
- 4:10Speaker 2: people texting going through construction zones, which was unbelievable. It's
- 4:18Speaker 2: just incredible. Red Sox lost last night to Tampa Bay.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I think they're going to be back at it tonight.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Hopefully I'll be able to watch and report tomorrow morning.
- 4:30Speaker 2: But yes, I did say just a minute ago when
- 4:35Speaker 2: I referred to rain. I referred to it as a
- 4:38Speaker 2: steady rain for the forecast today, which really has garnered
- 4:45Speaker 2: the attention of these two hooligans sitting right next to me,
- 4:49Speaker 2: Mark Tatrow and Mary Ellen Copping. Very good morning to
- 4:53Speaker 2: you both.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Good morning, good morning.
- 4:56Speaker 2: How the heck are you both fantastic?
- 4:59Speaker 4: Yes, doing very well today.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Mark Mary Ellen is always one of these guys, as
- 5:04Speaker 2: you well know, who's operating at one hundred percent. Have
- 5:08Speaker 2: you ever seen Mark? And Mark? How you doing horrible?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Have you ever seen that? Never?
- 5:15Speaker 5: Ever?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Never?
- 5:16Speaker 4: Never?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Now once? How long have you known this guy?
- 5:19Speaker 4: I've known Mark for a long time.
- 5:20Speaker 5: I used to work for the accounting firm that did
- 5:22Speaker 5: his his books.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Okay, it's been forever, a very long time.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Solid dude, right there. Very yeah, best of the best,
- 5:32Speaker 2: top brass. Absolutely yeah. You're a member of the Lions Club. Yes, okay,
- 5:39Speaker 2: how did that happen? How did you how did you
- 5:41Speaker 2: get that? Did Mark threaten to beat you up?
- 5:45Speaker 5: He didn't. My friend Stacy Cadat was a member of
- 5:50Speaker 5: the Lions. She moved away, but I've known her for
- 5:54Speaker 5: a long time and she knew that I played disc golf,
- 5:57Speaker 5: so I was a part of the Lions disc golf
- 5:59Speaker 5: tournament for years.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I've done it, and I got invited.
- 6:03Speaker 5: To go to a master's disc golf tournament last year
- 6:07Speaker 5: and she saw my post on Facebook and she goes,
- 6:09Speaker 5: I think I can get you a sponsor from the Lions,
- 6:11Speaker 5: and I'm like really, and she did and then the
- 6:15Speaker 5: rest is history.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So you've been playing disc golf for a while.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah, huh, it's about twoenty seventeen.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Ish or so.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Okay, Mark, give me some dirt on Mary Ellen.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Boy, I don't know if I've got any real dirt
- 6:32Speaker 6: on her. She's been playing in the Alliance Disc Golf
- 6:36Speaker 6: tournament though since inception with her team, and they're a
- 6:39Speaker 6: lot of fun. She's got her team shirt.
- 6:41Speaker 4: On the Frizzing Whisby's.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Yes, yes, and yeah. She's just a great addition to
- 6:47Speaker 6: Alliance Club. And I was so happy when you know,
- 6:50Speaker 6: she came to talk to us about her tournament. She
- 6:53Speaker 6: was headed out to obviously much better disc golf player
- 6:56Speaker 6: than I am.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And is she really Yeah? Yeah, for sure.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Yeah, she's she's passionate about it. And I'm I'm a
- 7:04Speaker 6: I'm a player, but I'm not, you know, like passionate
- 7:07Speaker 6: player like she is in her crew, and yeah, she
- 7:10Speaker 6: does a does a great job at it, and we're,
- 7:13Speaker 6: you know, so happy that she decided to do a
- 7:16Speaker 6: membership with us on top of it, and of course
- 7:18Speaker 6: Stacey has moved away on a saturd.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You go North Carolina, South Carolina.
- 7:25Speaker 6: And so mari Own graciously stepped in to run this
- 7:30Speaker 6: year's disc golf tournament and doing awesome jobs.
- 7:34Speaker 2: How many years is it penned?
- 7:36Speaker 4: This is the eleventh, eleventh?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Okay, and Dave Rulo, there's another disc golfer.
- 7:44Speaker 6: Yeah, and he comes to the tournament and uh he
- 7:48Speaker 6: he has a good time. He's he and his wife
- 7:51Speaker 6: are both very good. Yeah. Yeah, we we have a
- 7:55Speaker 6: lot of different challenges on this disc golf uh tournament
- 8:00Speaker 6: that other than just went in the game. So yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 6: in fact, so what I wanna tell us about the holes?
- 8:06Speaker 6: What the different ones are?
- 8:07Speaker 5: Yep, we actually have five special holes this year. So
- 8:10Speaker 5: we have Whole five is the long closest to the pin,
- 8:15Speaker 5: and then Hoole six is the longest drive, and then
- 8:19Speaker 5: hole fourteen is closest to the tee, which is actually
- 8:22Speaker 5: the funniest one.
- 8:24Speaker 2: My hole, I'll be there, and.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Then Hoole eighteen, we've got closest to the line. So
- 8:28Speaker 5: we basically just roll out a rope and whoever throws
- 8:32Speaker 5: their disc and it lands us closest to the line,
- 8:35Speaker 5: and then.
- 8:35Speaker 4: We have one.
- 8:37Speaker 5: We ended up getting a gift certificate from RNL Archery.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Just one, not two.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Nice.
- 8:42Speaker 4: So we're doing a special I.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Call the special special hole on whole three and that's
- 8:48Speaker 5: kind of a tough hole, so we're doing the longest
- 8:50Speaker 5: drive on that hole for that.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yep, she could. She gets some really nice sponsors that
- 8:55Speaker 2: are backing yet yep, yep, it's great. How many total?
- 9:00Speaker 5: I mean, well, all eighteen holes are sponsored by a sheet. Well,
- 9:03Speaker 5: we have two that are are sponsoring to Nelson Ace
- 9:07Speaker 5: Hardware and Abishon each have two. But other than that,
- 9:10Speaker 5: all the other holes are sponsored by individual people.
- 9:13Speaker 2: This is amazing. This thing is turned into quite the
- 9:17Speaker 2: monster here.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Ye.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So are we are we good? With registration?
- 9:22Speaker 4: I think we have eighteen teams signed up and ready
- 9:26Speaker 4: to go?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Are we are we at? Is that capacity?
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Okay?
- 9:30Speaker 5: Well, because you have eighteen holes, you don't want to
- 9:31Speaker 5: start more then you can actually put on a hole
- 9:34Speaker 5: because then it causes backups and it takes longer.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's easier.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Just have eighteen teams and then everybody gets one hole
- 9:40Speaker 5: to start on and then you just circle from wherever
- 9:43Speaker 5: you start.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Now, what's the deal with the weather here? It's supposed
- 9:48Speaker 2: to be a steady and I'm sorry to say that word,
- 9:53Speaker 2: the S word, but that's what they're saying here, a
- 9:56Speaker 2: steady rain all day. What's the it's it's rain or.
- 10:03Speaker 5: I played in all weather. I did a tournament in Pittsford.
- 10:08Speaker 5: We did two rounds. Okay, this is in February last year.
- 10:12Speaker 5: The first round the ground was dry, it was cloudy.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Second round it's snow and we had four inches on
- 10:17Speaker 5: the ground by the time we were done.
- 10:18Speaker 4: And that was the same day. So you just playing
- 10:23Speaker 4: whatever you just did.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Bring a rain code or hold your disk over your head,
- 10:26Speaker 6: whatever you do to get through.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Fring your towels.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Now, if it's if it's if it's poor and hard, Uh,
- 10:35Speaker 2: does that affect the frisbee moving through the air.
- 10:40Speaker 4: I'm guessing it would hit on it.
- 10:41Speaker 5: So you just try to throw it a little bit different,
- 10:43Speaker 5: try to throw a little harder so it gets through
- 10:45Speaker 5: the rain nice.
- 10:47Speaker 2: It would be. Look at these Look at these fools
- 10:51Speaker 2: out of here playing playing frisbee in the porn rain?
- 10:54Speaker 2: What the hell's going on with these these for monitors?
- 10:56Speaker 2: They're up there playing softball in the snow and now
- 10:58Speaker 2: they're playing frisbee in the rain. What's going on up there?
- 11:02Speaker 3: If we don't play in the rain and snow.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And we never play?
- 11:06Speaker 2: You know, yes, that is so true, so true. So
- 11:10Speaker 2: tell me about so obviously some some great prices and
- 11:15Speaker 2: some great incentive to play. Uh what does it cost
- 11:19Speaker 2: to play? And where's the money go?
- 11:22Speaker 5: So it's seventy five dollars for each team to register,
- 11:26Speaker 5: and then it's seventy five dollars to sponsor a hole, Okay,
- 11:30Speaker 5: and then the money just goes into what does.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Alliance Club General fund?
- 11:35Speaker 4: Uh?
- 11:35Speaker 3: Some of it?
- 11:36Speaker 6: Like so we have the Mo Fortier Youth Recreation Fund
- 11:40Speaker 6: and so that's how we support that now and so
- 11:45Speaker 6: that's uh, we buy basketballs for the kids up there,
- 11:48Speaker 6: we buy uh time at the br and the auditorium.
- 11:52Speaker 6: We've done some Uh yeah, we did a scholarship for
- 11:57Speaker 6: this young lady who went into the National on a
- 12:00Speaker 6: horse show. Out of the fun, this fun and Natalie
- 12:06Speaker 6: awesome person, she's actually going into uh a field in
- 12:11Speaker 6: college that relates to the Lions Club charities. So she
- 12:15Speaker 6: is working with hearing impaired and so she's going to
- 12:19Speaker 6: learn all about that and and teach that and sign
- 12:23Speaker 6: language and yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 3: So really she's going to school.
- 12:26Speaker 6: And so she you know, that group UH comes and
- 12:31Speaker 6: talks to the Lions Club every year for their their
- 12:34Speaker 6: fundraiser to go to nationals. And this young young lady
- 12:39Speaker 6: came and talked and she did really well, and she
- 12:41Speaker 6: presents herself real a lot and this is just a nice,
- 12:44Speaker 6: nice person, and so we gave her a scholarship this year.
- 12:47Speaker 6: And then came out of this fun wow.
- 12:50Speaker 2: And you've you've talked before quite a bit Mark about
- 12:55Speaker 2: the Mo Fortier Youth Recreation Fund. How did how did
- 12:59Speaker 2: that whole thing get started?
- 13:02Speaker 6: So Mo actually had taken his grandson and his grandson's
- 13:09Speaker 6: friends to the auditorium to play basketball and then he
- 13:14Speaker 6: saw them signing and then paying. And of course Mo
- 13:17Speaker 6: was around back when that was developed for free for
- 13:21Speaker 6: the local students and stuff, and so he was furious
- 13:25Speaker 6: about the fact that they had to pay. He'said, what
- 13:27Speaker 6: about the kids who can't afford to pay? And so
- 13:30Speaker 6: I got the idea to Mo had done so much
- 13:33Speaker 6: for the community and Alliance Club and he was a
- 13:36Speaker 6: big part of you know, the basketball tournaments up there
- 13:39Speaker 6: and everything. So I got the idea that we would
- 13:43Speaker 6: do a charity for these kids that we pay for
- 13:48Speaker 6: this time and stuff, and we put it in Moe's name. Ironically,
- 13:52Speaker 6: right after we started developing this, uh Mo took ill
- 13:56Speaker 6: with cancer and we've since lost him, but we were
- 14:01Speaker 6: able to present this plaque commemorating this to him at
- 14:08Speaker 6: the Auditorium tournaments and the year before he passed, and
- 14:12Speaker 6: so this is an ongoing thing to honor Moe in
- 14:17Speaker 6: his desire to make sure that these kids could play,
- 14:22Speaker 6: whether they could afford to or not.
- 14:24Speaker 2: That's incredible. I've had forgotten about that, the details behind
- 14:30Speaker 2: that story. That's amazing.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Great great guy, great great family.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, So here we are playing disc golf this
- 14:38Speaker 2: afternoon for the eleventh tournament. What time are we getting
- 14:42Speaker 2: together in starting? What time's the first frisbee fly in?
- 14:47Speaker 5: Well shotgun start at five point thirty, So players need
- 14:50Speaker 5: to check in between four thirty and five ish. Then
- 14:53Speaker 5: we'll do like a short player meeting and then we'll
- 14:56Speaker 5: send everybody to their holes, because some holes are quite
- 14:59Speaker 5: a while.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Take a couple of minutes to get.
- 15:01Speaker 2: There at Millstone, that's where we're meeting, correct, I'm guessing
- 15:05Speaker 2: the parking lot right there, okay, and then we go
- 15:10Speaker 2: off and we're going to be playing disc golf until
- 15:13Speaker 2: what time.
- 15:14Speaker 5: Until they're done till probably take at least a couple
- 15:18Speaker 5: of hours.
- 15:18Speaker 6: It takes about two hours with everybody to get through,
- 15:22Speaker 6: and then they gather back into parking lot and then
- 15:26Speaker 6: they receive their prizes, the results from from the end
- 15:32Speaker 6: of the game and tell us about some of the
- 15:37Speaker 6: prizes that they're going to get.
- 15:39Speaker 4: We have specially died discs from Oh my God, What's
- 15:44Speaker 4: his name?
- 15:45Speaker 5: P Search Thank You is doing the first place prizes,
- 15:48Speaker 5: Tatro's Aces is donating sweatshirts for the second place prizes,
- 15:53Speaker 5: and then third place we have Norway and Sons donated
- 15:56Speaker 5: hats and coozies. And then for the special holes, we
- 16:01Speaker 5: have gift certificates from Pops Back Mountain Pizza, Twin City
- 16:06Speaker 5: Fun Center, Travis Mercy Memorial Park bought too from Lenny's.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Then Cabot David Cabbot donated.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Some cheese, and then the one for R and L. Archery. Wow,
- 16:21Speaker 4: got some good stuff.
- 16:23Speaker 2: That's really cool. I'm guessing that that the camaraderie there
- 16:28Speaker 2: is pretty pretty darn good. People really don't care that
- 16:32Speaker 2: it's going to be porn rain.
- 16:34Speaker 4: The golfers are good people. We have a lot of fun.
- 16:36Speaker 6: It's it's really a community if people. I mean, if
- 16:39Speaker 6: you you go there and you see a lot of
- 16:41Speaker 6: these guys there from all different places and stuff, but
- 16:43Speaker 6: they know each other from playing around and stuff, and they'll,
- 16:47Speaker 6: you know, they'll trade tips with each other while they're
- 16:49Speaker 6: standing there in the parking lot and uh, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 6: it's just a great group of people.
- 16:53Speaker 3: And they talk about.
- 16:54Speaker 6: The different tournaments that they go to, and you know
- 16:57Speaker 6: you're going to be at this one, you're going to
- 16:58Speaker 6: be at that one.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Of course we feed him at the end too.
- 17:01Speaker 2: So that's a big what's the deal with that? Where
- 17:03Speaker 2: is that being done?
- 17:04Speaker 3: The same place?
- 17:05Speaker 6: So Tim Codo will be Mann and my grill up
- 17:10Speaker 6: there and and doing hamburgers and hot dogs.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Who supplies the grill?
- 17:15Speaker 6: The grill belongs to me. I bought it for the
- 17:18Speaker 6: Lions Club. See, but that we're getting food donated from.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Yeah, we've got some food from Hibbert McGee and we've
- 17:27Speaker 5: got some from Capital Candy.
- 17:33Speaker 4: And then we bought some of the other stuff.
- 17:35Speaker 2: So, yeah, tell me about the Lions Club.
- 17:41Speaker 6: Mark, So, Lion's Club are our main focus is Satan
- 17:47Speaker 6: hearing and anything related to that, but anything to help
- 17:51Speaker 6: out with the community, such as the youth sports and activities, uh,
- 17:56Speaker 6: you know, people in need we help out. We taking
- 18:00Speaker 6: glasses from anybody. If you've got you know, glasses you're
- 18:03Speaker 6: no longer using, someone's passed away in the family. Hearing
- 18:07Speaker 6: aids as well, and those get recycled. The hearing aids
- 18:11Speaker 6: get recycled locally, and then the glasses get sent to
- 18:19Speaker 6: New Jersey and they take them all apart and they
- 18:22Speaker 6: categorize them, and they take them to third world countries
- 18:26Speaker 6: and they fit people for frames and glasses that couldn't
- 18:29Speaker 6: otherwise get them.
- 18:31Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 18:32Speaker 6: And so and then we you know, we do so
- 18:34Speaker 6: many fun fundraisers. You know, I always like to say,
- 18:39Speaker 6: you know, if it ain't fun, we need doing it.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, So we have.
- 18:42Speaker 6: A good time and we do lots of different you know,
- 18:49Speaker 6: things that just just melt your heart. We have a
- 18:52Speaker 6: piece of equipment that tests for eyesight and So it's
- 18:56Speaker 6: a scope and we have a couple of ladies in
- 18:59Speaker 6: the club who go out and test the school children
- 19:04Speaker 6: and and you know if everywhere from daycare on up
- 19:08Speaker 6: through and we have found a lot of kids that
- 19:14Speaker 6: had the needy glasses that didn't know it. Yeah, and
- 19:17Speaker 6: she's I want to say the numbers. I'm probably wrong
- 19:21Speaker 6: about this, but Leslie Walls just told me the number
- 19:24Speaker 6: the other day that she's done well over fifteen thousand kids.
- 19:29Speaker 2: For Lions Club.
- 19:31Speaker 6: For eyesight with our scope to check their eyes sight
- 19:35Speaker 6: just here, just here, just in central world.
- 19:38Speaker 2: That's not a national stat No.
- 19:40Speaker 3: That's that's our stat.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Wow. Mark.
- 19:43Speaker 6: So she goes, she goes to the school, she goes
- 19:46Speaker 6: to the daycares, her, Linda Mercy helps her. A couple
- 19:49Speaker 6: of other ladies help out well once in a while
- 19:51Speaker 6: on that and they they test all these kids and
- 19:55Speaker 6: they get a print out to take to their eye doctor.
- 19:57Speaker 2: So it's a referral program and maybe get a more
- 20:02Speaker 2: detailed I examine at that point the Optical Expressions does
- 20:06Speaker 2: does Yeah, they do work with you guys too.
- 20:09Speaker 6: They we send them if we send them to their
- 20:12Speaker 6: eye doctor, if they don't have one, we send them
- 20:14Speaker 6: to optical expressions because they do a lot for us.
- 20:17Speaker 3: We buy glasses for people who.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Cannot afford them, and we send them, you know, there
- 20:23Speaker 6: to get their eyeglasses.
- 20:26Speaker 3: We found with.
- 20:27Speaker 6: The with this I scope that we have, uh, we
- 20:30Speaker 6: discovered this was a few years ago, this young girl,
- 20:33Speaker 6: very young girl, that had an ocular tumor. Had we
- 20:37Speaker 6: not caught that, that would have blinded her. And she
- 20:41Speaker 6: went down and had that removed. I think she went
- 20:43Speaker 6: to Boston and so she has good eyesight today. That
- 20:47Speaker 6: she would she would have been blind out of it.
- 20:50Speaker 2: That's something else. Wow. When it comes to hearing and
- 20:58Speaker 2: Charlan's telling me all the time that, yeah, you know
- 21:02Speaker 2: that I need hearing aids. Of course that has nothing
- 21:06Speaker 2: to do with the fact that she's talking from the
- 21:08Speaker 2: other end of the house. Mark, can you relate to us?
- 21:12Speaker 3: Sometimes all we hear is Charlie Brown's teacher.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Right, yes, mom, mam ma, And sometimes we hear that
- 21:19Speaker 2: when we're in the same room.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Right. It goes both ways.
- 21:24Speaker 6: You know, I'm quite sure my wife doesn't listen to me.
- 21:26Speaker 3: On purpose because she's got perfect hearing. It says, well,
- 21:29Speaker 3: quite hang on.
- 21:30Speaker 2: There's a difference between listening and hearing right hearing is biological, okay,
- 21:37Speaker 2: but that's fascinating. So where do they If you have old,
- 21:41Speaker 2: old hearing aids laying around, which are like god, hearing
- 21:45Speaker 2: aids are so expensive, don't touch them in the trash.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Bring them?
- 21:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you can bring them.
- 21:49Speaker 6: So we have eyeglass boxes at all of the opticians.
- 21:54Speaker 6: There's a few banks that have them. I have one
- 21:55Speaker 6: at my store and you can bring the hearing aids
- 21:58Speaker 6: there as well, and we take those to Marcia Dieon
- 22:01Speaker 6: right in mapay Or. She's just awesome and she repurposes
- 22:06Speaker 6: the ones that she can and so that people hearing
- 22:10Speaker 6: aids are good.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Ones are very expensive, sure, you know.
- 22:13Speaker 6: So if they can be repurposed, that's just you know,
- 22:15Speaker 6: she cleans them all up, she toombs them and then
- 22:19Speaker 6: someone who couldn't afford to buy that nice of a
- 22:24Speaker 6: pair on their own.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Short's these well. So membership right now for the for
- 22:32Speaker 2: the Lions Club, you both are are obviously members. What's
- 22:38Speaker 2: what's involved with that? I know that we meet what
- 22:42Speaker 2: twice a month?
- 22:42Speaker 6: So we meet the first and third Tuesday of the
- 22:45Speaker 6: month at five point thirty at the Canadian Club. The
- 22:48Speaker 6: first Tuesday of the month is a dinner meeting, and
- 22:51Speaker 6: we usually have a speaker to kind of inform us
- 22:54Speaker 6: about what's going on in the community or with their
- 22:57Speaker 6: events or you know, something like that, and or someone.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Has a need. We just had over the Edge come in.
- 23:05Speaker 6: They're going to be putting people over the top of
- 23:07Speaker 6: the high rise for a fundraiser for Easter Seals. You know,
- 23:11Speaker 6: So things like that that we have talks about is Lucas.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Is Lucas gonna strap up and do that? Do we
- 23:18Speaker 2: know he is? Okay? Okay, and wow, keep going. So
- 23:26Speaker 2: I'm writing stuff down.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so we you know, we do.
- 23:29Speaker 6: And people ask about like I've been doing some recruiting
- 23:32Speaker 6: with my friends recently and got really good response and asked,
- 23:37Speaker 6: you know, I don't know I can make that commitment.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I'm too busy. So I always think it's funny when
- 23:43Speaker 3: people tell me they're too busy. But you remember Harry.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Daniels, He used to tell me all the time. He's
- 23:50Speaker 6: the one that got me in the Alliance club. Uh, if
- 23:53Speaker 6: you want to get something done, ask a busy person.
- 23:56Speaker 6: They know how to get it done. But it's not
- 23:59Speaker 6: with a line club. It's as much or as little
- 24:02Speaker 6: as you can do. If you can give a little
- 24:05Speaker 6: bit of time, somebody needs that from you. If you
- 24:09Speaker 6: can give a lot of time, what a blessing. You
- 24:11Speaker 6: can give a little bit of money, cool. If you
- 24:14Speaker 6: can give no money, cool, If you can give a
- 24:17Speaker 6: lot of money, love you to death. Yeah, it's it's
- 24:21Speaker 6: all what you can do, what makes you feel good.
- 24:24Speaker 6: And as part of it, I mean, you're not necessarily
- 24:26Speaker 6: doing it for the greater good, You're doing it for you.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 6: It makes you feel good that you're giving back because
- 24:35Speaker 6: we've all had needed something at some point, and so
- 24:39Speaker 6: we know how it feels to need that, and you
- 24:41Speaker 6: fill that void for somebody, you feel good about that.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You've got some some longtime members. Uh. There's Judy and
- 24:51Speaker 2: Rick Rick. Uh, there's Linda and Harry Mercy.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Tom Cotts and.
- 25:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I've been in for I want to say, twenty
- 25:05Speaker 6: four twenty five years, and I only know how long
- 25:09Speaker 6: I've been in when I get my five year pin,
- 25:11Speaker 6: so we get.
- 25:12Speaker 3: A new penny. Wow, that's how I remember it.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Pee.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I want to get back to Mary Ellen and disc Golf.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You were telling me that with the tournament this afternoon
- 25:27Speaker 2: at five o'clock, up at Millstone eleventh Annual. You're quite
- 25:33Speaker 2: the disc golf for you. You went to Kansas I did?
- 25:37Speaker 2: What was What was that?
- 25:39Speaker 5: It's an invite that you get from the PDGA, which
- 25:42Speaker 5: is the Professional Disc Golf Association, and it's invite only.
- 25:46Speaker 5: And what they do is it's all the amateur disc
- 25:48Speaker 5: golfers age for That's why it's called Masters, and they
- 25:53Speaker 5: take a percentage of each division and then you get
- 25:58Speaker 5: an invite if you meet all their criteria.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Oh my god. Yeah, and you met all the criteria
- 26:05Speaker 2: I did. How was it? How did you do?
- 26:08Speaker 4: I did okay.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Actually it was harder playing on courses that I didn't know,
- 26:13Speaker 5: and we played one of the course, Kansas Emporia is
- 26:16Speaker 5: known for the wind, and one day was really really windy,
- 26:19Speaker 5: so that kind of threw me for a loop. But
- 26:20Speaker 5: then I came back and played at the course I
- 26:23Speaker 5: played on the first day and I blew almost everybody
- 26:27Speaker 5: in my division out of the water. I played so well.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I was so impressed with myself. Wow, it had a
- 26:32Speaker 5: lot of fun.
- 26:33Speaker 2: But what happened? What happens when things get a little
- 26:36Speaker 2: frustrating with the wind or or what have you.
- 26:39Speaker 5: You just kind of have to take it in stride.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I mean you can't. You can't get I mean you
- 26:46Speaker 5: can get angry, but you can't.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I'm asking you can you can you get a little?
- 26:51Speaker 2: Can you drop some F bombs?
- 26:52Speaker 4: Oh my god? Yes?
- 26:54Speaker 2: Okay, see you can get really hot.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Oh yeah, glad to be careful though, because when you
- 26:59Speaker 5: play in certain turn you have to be careful what
- 27:01Speaker 5: you say because other people that are on your card
- 27:04Speaker 5: might be offended and they can issue you a warning
- 27:07Speaker 5: really which would which would cost you like a stroke
- 27:10Speaker 5: or two strokes or whatever.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Oh so, if you're going to drop the F bomp
- 27:13Speaker 2: to it into the yes.
- 27:15Speaker 5: Do it very quietly into your arm or just know
- 27:17Speaker 5: the people that you're playing with and no, that's how
- 27:19Speaker 5: you talk and then they don't care.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Okay, wow, you guys are playing today, no matter what,
- 27:28Speaker 2: no matter what. Okay, come up. There be a spectator
- 27:32Speaker 2: if you're not. If you're not playing, you can.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Follow one of the groups around if you want. And
- 27:37Speaker 5: it's fun because it's five man teams. You play from
- 27:40Speaker 5: the best lie, which is a lot of fun. Everybody
- 27:43Speaker 5: gets to throw and then you pick which one you
- 27:45Speaker 5: like the best, and then everybody throws from that disc.
- 27:50Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun.
- 27:51Speaker 2: You know. Dave was telling me that there's there's almost
- 27:56Speaker 2: like a disc gofers. There's almost like a little bit
- 27:59Speaker 2: of five religion here. I mean, there's there's people that
- 28:03Speaker 2: take this stuff very seriously.
- 28:07Speaker 6: We see some of these setups that these guys, these
- 28:09Speaker 6: people walk around whether it looks like they're carrying a
- 28:11Speaker 6: juke box behind them, you know, some of them have
- 28:14Speaker 6: carts with all their discs in them.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Okay, I do have a card.
- 28:19Speaker 6: Some of these fanatics. I have a little backpack with
- 28:26Speaker 6: mine in there. My wife plays with two discs.
- 28:29Speaker 4: That's funny.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 28:30Speaker 6: Yeah, she plays with the same two discs every time.
- 28:36Speaker 6: But she's very athletic and competitive. She's a better athlete
- 28:40Speaker 6: on everything than I am. So so maybe we left him,
- 28:42Speaker 6: I don't know. So she'll be there too, She'll be
- 28:45Speaker 6: that she's on the team, all right, I'll be I'll
- 28:47Speaker 6: be on whole fourteen if people want to spectate, there's
- 28:50Speaker 6: two whole side by side, So Lucals will be on one.
- 28:55Speaker 6: I'll be on the other, and I usually have my
- 28:57Speaker 6: music playing and we're just you know.
- 29:00Speaker 3: And everybody.
- 29:01Speaker 6: I took pictures, Okay, I might have a couple of
- 29:05Speaker 6: beverages in my backpack.
- 29:08Speaker 2: May or may not. Possibly, this is uh, this is
- 29:13Speaker 2: a lot of fun.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Man, it's a lot of fun.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Did you guys, how did you get through COVID with
- 29:16Speaker 2: with this? Did you? Did you skip a year or two?
- 29:19Speaker 4: No?
- 29:19Speaker 5: We just moved it to the fall and then then
- 29:22Speaker 5: in set up the barbecue, everybody got everybody got a
- 29:25Speaker 5: bag that had like snacks and drinks in it so
- 29:27Speaker 5: they could take it with them around the course instead
- 29:31Speaker 5: of something at the end.
- 29:32Speaker 4: So still managed to make it work.
- 29:34Speaker 6: And it's a perfect social distancing game. I mean outdoors
- 29:38Speaker 6: maintained a distance from each other, you know, so so
- 29:41Speaker 6: it worked fine there.
- 29:42Speaker 2: During that who's on your team, Mary Ellen?
- 29:45Speaker 5: My son Derek, and he's the one that actually got
- 29:47Speaker 5: me into disc golf originally his wife, my daughter in law, Nicole.
- 29:53Speaker 5: And then I mean that's three of us, right, and
- 29:57Speaker 5: then two of his friends I can't remember who they
- 30:00Speaker 5: are though, Okay, that's going to be on our team.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Insignificant. They just there to fill up the five.
- 30:05Speaker 2: One of them the others were Cherry.
- 30:07Speaker 5: One of them was his ultimate frisbe coach in high school.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And oh and the other one is a father of
- 30:13Speaker 5: one of our friends that was on our team last year.
- 30:15Speaker 5: Okay Fane, but he moved his son moved away, so
- 30:18Speaker 5: he replaced him on our team.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Do you guys have for blood? Are you gonna do?
- 30:21Speaker 2: You want to win this thing?
- 30:23Speaker 4: We just go to have fun.
- 30:24Speaker 5: We are never really Last year I think was the
- 30:26Speaker 5: first year we actually were more competitive. I think we
- 30:29Speaker 5: finished with and fourth with a negative fourteen I think maybe,
- 30:36Speaker 5: but the winner was like negative nineteen or twenty or
- 30:38Speaker 5: twenty one.
- 30:38Speaker 2: If he get ticked off at something someone else, can
- 30:41Speaker 2: you just can you throw frisbees at him and try
- 30:43Speaker 2: to beat him in the back of the head.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Well, you're not supposed to do that.
- 30:46Speaker 2: No biting, kicking, scratching and.
- 30:48Speaker 6: Say my negative number is usually how many disc guys
- 30:51Speaker 6: losing the course?
- 30:52Speaker 2: Right then he gone into the Corey.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Might go in the worst one is what's the whole
- 30:59Speaker 3: number with that? The granted?
- 31:01Speaker 6: Oh thirteen, Yeah, I've probably lost three those blocks and you.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Cannot find them.
- 31:06Speaker 6: And I've really a couple from the watch where they
- 31:09Speaker 6: go they go down underneath those blocks and.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Forget forget it.
- 31:14Speaker 5: Well, if you walk up to them and you look,
- 31:16Speaker 5: you can look down and some of them there's actually caves. Yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 5: it's like your disc goes in there. You are never
- 31:22Speaker 5: going to see it again.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Wow, you probably don't reach down in there. You get
- 31:24Speaker 3: it either.
- 31:25Speaker 2: No, last time I saw you both was over at
- 31:29Speaker 2: Abashank where you were set up quite a day over there.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Potters Angels was there too, Yes, tell me about that.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Is that that's something that you've you've done for a while.
- 31:41Speaker 3: No, actually this was the second year.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Oh I did it.
- 31:44Speaker 3: So Abuschons does a thing where you can They call
- 31:48Speaker 3: it the roundup.
- 31:49Speaker 6: So if you go in and spend you know, two
- 31:52Speaker 6: dollars and twenty cents, you want to round it up
- 31:55Speaker 6: to three dollars, they give the rest to a charitable organization.
- 32:00Speaker 6: And so we last year at the same time around
- 32:04Speaker 6: Mother's Day, we did a barbecue for them, and they
- 32:09Speaker 6: take the money from that. They match whatever we come
- 32:12Speaker 6: up with between what they give us from what's taken
- 32:15Speaker 6: behind the counter, right and what we raise from donations
- 32:18Speaker 6: for our barbecue. And so now they now want us
- 32:23Speaker 6: to be an annual thing for us.
- 32:25Speaker 2: That's fantastic.
- 32:27Speaker 3: So, yeah, it's it's a lot of fun.
- 32:28Speaker 4: And yeah, that was a lot of fun.
- 32:30Speaker 2: You guys had the burgers and the dogs going, and.
- 32:32Speaker 6: Burgers and dogs and beans and cookies and you know,
- 32:36Speaker 6: so all kinds of stuff there and it's you know,
- 32:40Speaker 6: it's some of those things. It's kind of like old
- 32:41Speaker 6: home day or homes you see who you know, you
- 32:44Speaker 6: know for a while, you get the visit and stuff.
- 32:46Speaker 6: And we we had the youth sports baseball team there
- 32:52Speaker 6: this year and we gave them a check for five hundred.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Dollars granted city blast and.
- 32:56Speaker 6: Uh yeah and great, and they were out, the kids
- 32:59Speaker 6: were there. They were out on the street with the
- 33:02Speaker 6: signs saying barbecue here and just great kids. One of
- 33:05Speaker 6: almost forty grands on.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, so that was fun to add that.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Added to it in.
- 33:11Speaker 4: The rain, I might add, yeah it was rained.
- 33:14Speaker 2: They also has it not rained? I mean it's like
- 33:17Speaker 2: every I think this is what seriously, weekend number twenty
- 33:23Speaker 2: six consecutively that it is.
- 33:26Speaker 6: It has rained and they're going to start working Saturdays
- 33:29Speaker 6: and Sundays and take off Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Now, so great, that is a great idea. What is
- 33:34Speaker 2: there fifty two weeks in a year and we've rained
- 33:36Speaker 2: up twenty six weekends? Okay, then the Granite City Blast Baseball.
- 33:43Speaker 2: By the way, what a great bunch of kids. They're
- 33:45Speaker 2: trying to get to Cooperstown. They're going to go to Cooperstown.
- 33:48Speaker 2: They have been raising funds, they have met their goals,
- 33:52Speaker 2: so they're going to go. But you know, I've talked
- 33:55Speaker 2: with some of these coaches and parents off the air
- 34:00Speaker 2: and they're like, yeah, just because we've got the money
- 34:03Speaker 2: to go, there are so many other expenses that are
- 34:07Speaker 2: involved here, So I mean, this is really going to
- 34:10Speaker 2: help them out. Another five hundred bucks. That's great. I'd
- 34:14Speaker 2: love to see them all get on a coach on
- 34:18Speaker 2: a bus so they can all be together together. That
- 34:21Speaker 2: would be amazing. But yeah, they're headed to Cooperstown in August.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I think be a great experience for him. Yeah, incredible.
- 34:29Speaker 2: And I told them, I'm like, regardless of how you do,
- 34:31Speaker 2: it's just the fact that you've done all this. You've
- 34:35Speaker 2: been raking the lawns, you've been shoveling, you've been stacking firewood,
- 34:38Speaker 2: you've been doing baked sales, you've been doing so much
- 34:41Speaker 2: in the community for so long. Just the fact that
- 34:44Speaker 2: you've earned your your your keep and you're going to Cooperstown.
- 34:50Speaker 2: You should be very proud of yourselves, all of you. Yeah.
- 34:53Speaker 6: I mean what I like about it is one is
- 34:56Speaker 6: going to give them more of a love for the game.
- 34:59Speaker 6: But it's also the while they're doing these fundraisers and stuff,
- 35:02Speaker 6: it gives them a sense.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Of their community, that's it.
- 35:05Speaker 6: And they get out there and they see these people
- 35:07Speaker 6: and and they become part of their community instead of
- 35:11Speaker 6: sheltering away or just you know, hanging out home playing
- 35:14Speaker 6: video games and whatnot.
- 35:16Speaker 3: You know, it's really good.
- 35:17Speaker 6: And these kids are all you know, all their brothers
- 35:20Speaker 6: and sisters are there. They're all outgoing, cool kids.
- 35:23Speaker 2: And they're very very good too. I've been over at
- 35:26Speaker 2: their practices over it Norwich on Sundays and during you know,
- 35:33Speaker 2: during April. I mean they're they're working hard. These kids
- 35:37Speaker 2: are really really, really good kids. So thank you.
- 35:40Speaker 6: A lot of good parents there too. I mean I
- 35:42Speaker 6: know a lot of those parents. Some of them some
- 35:44Speaker 6: of them I've known since they were little kids. Heather
- 35:47Speaker 6: Anderson I have known Learned since she was a baby.
- 35:49Speaker 6: And Wow, and Mike your husband, I've known him. He
- 35:52Speaker 6: worked for me for a little bit and he's a
- 35:54Speaker 6: great guy. I mean, just just a lot of good
- 35:56Speaker 6: Tyler Papen. You know there's a lot of good uh
- 35:59Speaker 6: parents in there.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Well, thank you Lions Club for supporting these kids five
- 36:05Speaker 2: hundred bucks. Wow, that's great. Be part of this experience
- 36:09Speaker 2: today in whatever capacity you can, even as a spectator,
- 36:14Speaker 2: show up, cheer some of the teams on. Bring your
- 36:16Speaker 2: ringcot Packing Umbrewla too if if you want. But they're
- 36:19Speaker 2: going to be playing five o'clock Millstone. This is the
- 36:22Speaker 2: year number eleven for the Lions Club Annual Disc Half Tournament,
- 36:30Speaker 2: and it's going to be great. You guys have you're
- 36:33Speaker 2: you're all full with teams. You have how many teams total?
- 36:35Speaker 1: Now?
- 36:36Speaker 2: Eighteen eighteen teams if.
- 36:39Speaker 6: You have time to tell them some of the names
- 36:42Speaker 6: of the teams, if you can think them off put
- 36:44Speaker 6: you on the spot, I know, But I mean, like,
- 36:46Speaker 6: you guys are the.
- 36:47Speaker 2: The frizzing Wisby.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Whisby is there?
- 36:50Speaker 3: Oh my god?
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yeah? The both what's up with you trying to get
- 36:57Speaker 2: her to memorize eighteen teams?
- 37:01Speaker 6: And the sad part is like, you know, I know
- 37:03Speaker 6: I can't come up with names like that either.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I'm terrible of that.
- 37:05Speaker 6: So but yeah, there's there's some cool cool man.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I wish I could remember them because there are
- 37:10Speaker 5: some funny ones. I know, I wish I would have.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Well, the Frizzing Wizbys is pretty badass. I mean I
- 37:16Speaker 2: like that.
- 37:18Speaker 5: I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. Yeah, so that's where
- 37:20Speaker 5: the Frizzing wib came from.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well listen, guys, good luck today and
- 37:29Speaker 2: and try to try to stay dry. I already know
