- 0:00Speaker 1: Get after doing.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Everybody, welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 0:03Speaker 2: thirteen under the Zone. My name is Craig Waite. No,
- 0:05Speaker 2: I have not yet gone up to the dal for Metroplex.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I know there's like this mass exodus today. The long
- 0:14Speaker 2: warn football team headed up there right now. The athletic
- 0:19Speaker 2: department personnel headed up there. In fact, there are several
- 0:23Speaker 2: from the athletic department who have encouraged and urged others
- 0:28Speaker 2: who have a specific or cential function with the football
- 0:34Speaker 2: program's appearance in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl there in the
- 0:37Speaker 2: semifinals of the college football playoff to get up there
- 0:40Speaker 2: on Wednesday instead of Thursday because of what could happen.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Updated weather information that I received this morning is it
- 0:49Speaker 2: might not be quite as bad as folks seven originally anticipated.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Can imagine that?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Can meteorological forecast be a little over the top, Well,
- 0:58Speaker 2: maybe maybe not?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Find out.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us on the program, and
- 1:02Speaker 2: of course us includes the producer of this program, Cameron D.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Parker.
- 1:07Speaker 2: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
- 1:11Speaker 2: in his favorite pro football team that has packed away
- 1:14Speaker 2: the gear, but it could be for Dicey as in
- 1:17Speaker 2: the weather when you and Mike Hardball Harge Mark Henry
- 1:23Speaker 2: head up there to bring everybody the Longhorns game Day
- 1:27Speaker 2: show from Boomer Jackson, Arlington. That's at I thirty and
- 1:32Speaker 2: one fifty seven right there in the Lincoln Center shopping center.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So it could be a little when's your planning to leave?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Is it sometime Friday morning? Friday morning? Yeah, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 2: the worst of it may already have passed by the
- 1:45Speaker 2: time you leave Friday morning. Yeah, what folks are thinking
- 1:48Speaker 2: may be more of an issue, could be tomorrow night,
- 1:52Speaker 2: might be an issue.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So we'll see about that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: All right, let me tell you what's coming up on
- 1:55Speaker 2: the program here in a minute, we'll let you hear
- 1:57Speaker 2: from Rodney Terry, long worn men's basketball coach.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For a couple of reasons.
- 2:01Speaker 2: One to recap the game last night against number two Auburn,
- 2:04Speaker 2: a game of the long Worn trail by twenty one
- 2:06Speaker 2: points of twelve fifty seven to go and cut it
- 2:08Speaker 2: to three twice in the final minute, did not pack
- 2:12Speaker 2: it in, gave a really game effort to themselves.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But Auburn, obviously number.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Two in the nation for a reason, really really good
- 2:21Speaker 2: and they were able to hold on for the victory.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We'll hear from Rodney Terry about that.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Also the other reasons that the reminder that our SEC
- 2:30Speaker 2: Conference season premiere of Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Erry
- 2:35Speaker 2: from Pluckers is going to be recorded tonight. Normally it'll
- 2:40Speaker 2: be Thursday evenings live at six o'clock at Plucker's the
- 2:44Speaker 2: West Campus location. It's at twenty two twenty two Rio
- 2:47Speaker 2: Grand normally this particular week because of the weather and
- 2:52Speaker 2: to allow the Long Worn fans who normally come out
- 2:55Speaker 2: to the show but are thinking they might need to
- 2:58Speaker 2: get an early start to Arlington in the Dallas Fort
- 3:01Speaker 2: Worth area chance to do that. So as a result
- 3:03Speaker 2: of that, the show is going to be recorded tonight.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It'll be recorded this evening from six o'clock to seven o'clock.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So if you want to come out for the show,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Julian Larry Longhorns guard we'll join us out at the show,
- 3:21Speaker 2: so we hope you'll have a chance to that.
- 3:25Speaker 3: You know who else is going to be on the show,
- 3:28Speaker 3: cam I do you do?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Okay?
- 3:32Speaker 2: For folks who don't know who Darby Rich is, he's
- 3:36Speaker 2: an interesting dude. Uh and he is also the Long
- 3:39Speaker 2: Orange Strength and Conditioning coach, and so Julian Larry will
- 3:43Speaker 2: come out the long orange guard and Darby Rich.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm always interested.
- 3:47Speaker 2: In getting the frame of mind of the of the
- 3:54Speaker 2: strength coach because a lot of times he is the
- 3:58Speaker 2: closest guy to the players, closer even than the head coach,
- 4:02Speaker 2: because he spends an incredible amount of time with them
- 4:06Speaker 2: in their conditioning and they're off season work and then
- 4:09Speaker 2: in season work as well.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So you've got to know Darby pretty well.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Yeah, real nice guy. You know, he's been around the block.
- 4:16Speaker 4: He had a lot of good experience. He's worked at
- 4:19Speaker 4: Oklahoma with Blake Griffin. He's worked at Texas A and
- 4:22Speaker 4: M with Alex Caruso. He's worked at Memphis with with
- 4:25Speaker 4: Penny Hardaway and those guys, and now at Texas. So
- 4:28Speaker 4: a wealth of knowledge and he gets fired up man.
- 4:31Speaker 4: You know, there's a lot of times during the games
- 4:33Speaker 4: where he's out almost at mid court, you know, barking
- 4:37Speaker 4: at the players of the referees. So he's a very
- 4:39Speaker 4: passionate guy and he's done a good job so far
- 4:41Speaker 4: this season with this team.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll visit with Darby, We'll visit with Julian Larry.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Tonight is when we record the program on Loghorn Weekly
- 4:50Speaker 2: with Rodney Terry normally, as I said, it'll be live
- 4:53Speaker 2: Thursday nights at six. Tonight, we're recording it from six
- 4:56Speaker 2: to seven. Then it's airing tomorrow night. It's airing at
- 4:58Speaker 2: seven o'clock tomorrow night, isn't it just six to seven?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Okay? Okay, six o'clock all right, So.
- 5:03Speaker 2: It'll air in its normal slot six o'clock tomorrow night,
- 5:07Speaker 2: but we're recording it tonight at six, So just wanted
- 5:11Speaker 2: to make you aware of that, all right. Also, we're
- 5:14Speaker 2: gonna hear from Vic Schaeffer, the Texas women's basketball coach,
- 5:18Speaker 2: had his media availability, and you know how Vic can
- 5:21Speaker 2: get on a roll.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Well, he got on a roll yesterday and a.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Lot of it was haranguing against the Southeastern Conference for
- 5:29Speaker 2: scheduling women's conference games on Thursdays and Sundays. His point
- 5:33Speaker 2: being they don't really get a true day off for
- 5:35Speaker 2: the players because of that. And it even gets into
- 5:38Speaker 2: a little ecumenical discussion because you know, some kids would
- 5:41Speaker 2: like to be able to attend church on a Sunday
- 5:43Speaker 2: can't do it as a result of that.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So you're gonna hear Vic on this.
- 5:47Speaker 2: We're gonna bring you portions of it because the entirety
- 5:50Speaker 2: of it is pretty long. So we're gonna bring you
- 5:53Speaker 2: portions in the two o'clock hour, the three o'clock hour,
- 5:55Speaker 2: in the.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Four o'clock hour, we're gonna We're gonna do that as well.
- 5:58Speaker 2: We'll talk some NBA A huge game to night Oklahoma
- 6:02Speaker 2: City and Cleveland Thunder with a fifteen game winning streak
- 6:06Speaker 2: and the Cavaliers with a ten game winning streak, and
- 6:10Speaker 2: that'll be going on tonight Cleveland. You know former long
- 6:13Speaker 2: Horns stand out Jared Allen playing for the Cavaliers, So
- 6:16Speaker 2: we'll talk about that some NFL. We'll get to all that,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but right now, let's hear the postgame conversation that we
- 6:22Speaker 2: got right after the Longhorns lost the game last night
- 6:25Speaker 2: to Auburn, and again they were down twenty one, they
- 6:27Speaker 2: cut it to three twice in the final minutes, and
- 6:30Speaker 2: the conversation that Eddie Orn and I had with head
- 6:34Speaker 2: coach Trondy Terry. I say this up from because I
- 6:36Speaker 2: know how you feel about this. We live in the
- 6:38Speaker 2: world of no moral victories. Having said all of that,
- 6:41Speaker 2: the fight, the resiliency, the toughness. Your team showed from
- 6:44Speaker 2: down twenty one to cut it the three twice in
- 6:46Speaker 2: the final minute of the ballgame.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You had to be pleased with that.
- 6:49Speaker 5: No, you know, echo your same thing you just said.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I said that to our team with Texas, don't we don't.
- 6:54Speaker 5: We don't celebrate a more satisfied with more victories. We
- 6:58Speaker 5: expected win every game that we we line up and play,
- 7:01Speaker 5: lace up to play. That's a really good team over there.
- 7:03Speaker 5: You know, Bruce has a really good team. They're finding
- 7:05Speaker 5: four caliber team. I thought a guy showed a lot
- 7:07Speaker 5: of fight. I thought that kept competing. I think again,
- 7:10Speaker 5: you know, early in our journey here in comforts play,
- 7:12Speaker 5: our guys are learning what it takes to play for
- 7:14Speaker 5: forty minutes and when it's gonna take the win it
- 7:17Speaker 5: in this conference.
- 7:18Speaker 3: What was the biggest thing you noticed in the final
- 7:20Speaker 3: twelve minutes that turned it to where your team.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Gave itself a chance by the fight they showed.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Well, we said we had to try to sit down
- 7:27Speaker 5: and get some stops, and if we were able to
- 7:28Speaker 5: put some stops together, we could come down and find
- 7:31Speaker 5: a way to score and get what we needed to
- 7:33Speaker 5: get done. On the other end, you know, and it's
- 7:35Speaker 5: a long game and that's what our guys are finding
- 7:37Speaker 5: out again in the two games we played, you know,
- 7:40Speaker 5: both of the games have come down to possession games.
- 7:42Speaker 5: You know, they extended the game over there and then
- 7:44Speaker 5: we got more points. That's toward the end. But really,
- 7:46Speaker 5: you know, seven minutes to go, it's anybody's game, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 5: just learning to work the game. You know, we have
- 7:52Speaker 5: four new starters. Both of those teams have older players
- 7:55Speaker 5: that know how to close our game and win games.
- 7:57Speaker 5: That's that's the growth curfter for our team. But I
- 8:00Speaker 5: love that effort. I loved are still want to and
- 8:03Speaker 5: trying to get it done and we're gonna find a way.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and two of those guys that had that that
- 8:08Speaker 1: want to.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Jordan gives you seventeen and the second half an art
- 8:10Speaker 2: what a ball game, a career game for him with
- 8:12Speaker 2: the thirty four.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Yeah, we did a much better job of taking care
- 8:14Speaker 5: of the basketball in the second half. We had nine
- 8:16Speaker 5: turner was in a half. That was one thing that
- 8:18Speaker 5: was really hurting us. And you know, they're points in
- 8:20Speaker 5: the paint early. They made some threes early. They're a
- 8:23Speaker 5: really good shooting team, probably the best shooting team we
- 8:25Speaker 5: played all year and again that's a team that could
- 8:29Speaker 5: go to the final four. And I think we have
- 8:30Speaker 5: a really good team. I think we're just going through
- 8:32Speaker 5: a little growth curve in terms of understanding what it
- 8:35Speaker 5: takes to win this league.
- 8:36Speaker 6: For forty minutes, Ronny, A lot of positive takeout of
- 8:39Speaker 6: this game, But you got a tough one coming in here, Saraday.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Not a lot of time to get ready. But another
- 8:43Speaker 6: team that's coming here. But I think it's you know,
- 8:46Speaker 6: these guys will build off of this one.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Again, a number one team in the country coming in.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Coach Barnes. You know, his team's always physical. You know
- 8:54Speaker 5: they play with the tough defensive mindset.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:57Speaker 5: But we'll regroup, we'll be ready, play in ready to
- 9:01Speaker 5: compete at high level.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I have two mad basketball teams in
- 9:04Speaker 3: here on Saturday.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Right, Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I mean, I mean it's not easy to win in
- 9:07Speaker 5: this league, and then this league's hard.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Now it's nothing.
- 9:09Speaker 5: We got the best league in the country, and you know,
- 9:11Speaker 5: again every night, you got to come play at a
- 9:14Speaker 5: high level. You don't have to play perfect, but you've
- 9:15Speaker 5: got to play at a high level and you've got
- 9:17Speaker 5: to play with a lot of urgency, and you got
- 9:19Speaker 5: to be extremely tough and competitive to get it done.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, there were a couple of references to me. First
- 9:25Speaker 2: of all, mentioned Jordan Pope had seventeen points and in
- 9:30Speaker 2: the second half, and then Arthur Khumba a career game
- 9:33Speaker 2: for him. His career I had been twenty eight at
- 9:35Speaker 2: Kansas State. He had thirty four points and eight rebounds
- 9:39Speaker 2: last night for Texas to try to At one point,
- 9:41Speaker 2: Kaluma had scored fifteen of the long range twenty four points.
- 9:44Speaker 2: So he kept them in the ball game and worked
- 9:48Speaker 2: real hard. The other thing we were talking about, number
- 9:50Speaker 2: two has come and left Town Auburn with that five
- 9:55Speaker 2: point win eighty seven, eighty two. Now number one comes in. Yes,
- 9:58Speaker 2: they're not going to be number one for long. In
- 10:00Speaker 2: case you didn't hear about it, the Tennessee Volunteers, of course,
- 10:03Speaker 2: Rick Barnes team the last unbeaten team in the country,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and they are unbeaten no more. Not only did they
- 10:08Speaker 2: lose at Florida last night, they lost by thirty thirty
- 10:13Speaker 2: seventy three, forty three. They hit four to three pointers
- 10:15Speaker 2: in twenty nine attempts in the first half. They were
- 10:18Speaker 2: four for twenty nine from the field overall, so they're
- 10:21Speaker 2: going to come in obviously coming in hot, a little
- 10:25Speaker 2: mad about how they did. So that'll be Saturday afternoon
- 10:29Speaker 2: at five o'clock as Texas will host number one Tennessee.
- 10:35Speaker 2: You can hear that here on AM thirteen under the
- 10:38Speaker 2: Zone beginning at four thirty Saturday afternoon, the tip off
- 10:41Speaker 2: at five o'clock. All right, up, next, we're going to
- 10:43Speaker 2: hear from Vick Schaeffer, Texas women's head coach when we
- 10:45Speaker 2: continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. The
- 10:48Speaker 2: Loghorns are trying to get to number one, the Texas
- 10:50Speaker 2: women's basketball team, and right now they're number one on
- 10:53Speaker 2: top tie to top the SEC standings with Alabama and
- 10:58Speaker 2: they're going to face the Crimson time.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Tomorrow night at Moody Center.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So Walwar's head coach Vic Schaeffer, had a media availability
- 11:06Speaker 2: that lasted was a little bit lengthy, so we've kind
- 11:09Speaker 2: of cut it up and we're gonna let you hear
- 11:11Speaker 2: parts of it each hour because he has some really
- 11:14Speaker 2: interesting points that he's making about things and his thoughts
- 11:17Speaker 2: on the state of the game and SEC scheduling and
- 11:20Speaker 2: stuff like that. So here's Part one of the media
- 11:24Speaker 2: availability with Vic Schaeffer.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Good afternoon, everybody appreciate you being on today. Another's second
- 11:35Speaker 7: week down the SEC and just got out of practice,
- 11:42Speaker 7: had a good workout this morning, a lot of film
- 11:45Speaker 7: and getting ready for a Top twenty matchup of another
- 11:50Speaker 7: one with Alabama. Virtually the same team, except they've added
- 11:58Speaker 7: a sick their seventh year player and Zay Green, who's
- 12:02Speaker 7: was a heck of a player coming out of high school.
- 12:04Speaker 1: He's had a great career.
- 12:05Speaker 7: In college, and she's now added so much to their
- 12:11Speaker 7: to their team, and so we're, uh, you know, we're
- 12:17Speaker 7: we're gonna have to really obviously they're a really good
- 12:20Speaker 7: basketball team, and we're gonna have to play well. Uh,
- 12:25Speaker 7: Christy does a great job, or her staff, her husband,
- 12:29Speaker 7: they've been around a long time. But just really, no,
- 12:35Speaker 7: we've we've got a big test in front of us
- 12:37Speaker 7: on Thursday night. You know, Zay's averaging almost seventeen a
- 12:43Speaker 7: game and four and a half rebounds a game, shooting
- 12:46Speaker 7: it at a high percentage fifty three percent. Of course,
- 12:49Speaker 7: they've got Barker back, who's an All SEC performer. It's
- 12:53Speaker 7: right behind her at almost sixteen points a game.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And six rebounds a game. So that's a good place
- 12:59Speaker 1: to start.
- 12:59Speaker 7: And they got a Leah and I back who's a
- 13:02Speaker 7: monster out there that can shoot it, you know, shooting
- 13:05Speaker 7: forty five percent from three and averaging fourteen a game.
- 13:09Speaker 7: So and then they got the aircraft carrier inside who's
- 13:13Speaker 7: much improved from a year ago, essence Cody, and she's
- 13:17Speaker 7: averaging eleven a game and seven rebounds. So this is
- 13:21Speaker 7: a really good basketball team. This will be a you know,
- 13:29Speaker 7: a really big test for us, and we're gonna have
- 13:31Speaker 7: to play well.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So yesterday was the day off. Today we got back.
- 13:36Speaker 7: At it and we got to get ready to play
- 13:39Speaker 7: again another top twenty team in the SEC. Proud of
- 13:46Speaker 7: Jordan Usbwa freshman National Freshman the Week and certainly deserving.
- 13:55Speaker 7: You know, she's she's really shooting it well for us
- 13:58Speaker 7: right now, playing at a high level. She's a great defender,
- 14:02Speaker 7: but she's shooting it at a really extraordinary mark right now,
- 14:07Speaker 7: and just in her last five she's shooting it really well,
- 14:10Speaker 7: fifty from three on the season, I think sixty percent
- 14:14Speaker 7: in the last five games. So she's really developed offensively
- 14:18Speaker 7: and is providing us both ends of the floor right now.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And so it's it's good to have a have her
- 14:26Speaker 1: in there and being able to make shots. Thanks coach,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Let's go Mark and then Denny.
- 14:33Speaker 8: Yeah, Heyvig. Speaking of Jordan, was she known more as
- 14:38Speaker 8: kind of a mid range player in high school? And
- 14:43Speaker 8: does she need to be a starter an hour?
- 14:45Speaker 1: She ready for that? Yeah?
- 14:47Speaker 7: You know, first question is I think we thought she
- 14:51Speaker 7: could score it all three levels. I watched her in
- 14:53Speaker 7: aau a lot, you know, went out to the West
- 14:56Speaker 7: coast a bunch more than I've ever done in recruiting.
- 14:59Speaker 7: In I think the thing that stood out to me
- 15:03Speaker 7: I knew she could score, and I knew she was
- 15:05Speaker 7: really smart and good offensively, but she's way ahead of
- 15:10Speaker 7: the curve defensively. She's really really a great help defender.
- 15:15Speaker 7: She's got great feet defensively on ball. So she's tough.
- 15:19Speaker 7: She's a tough kid, really competitive kid. So I think
- 15:23Speaker 7: her stats right now certainly warrant. You know, if we
- 15:27Speaker 7: wanted to start her, we could. I think the dilemma is,
- 15:29Speaker 7: do you want to bring in somebody like her who's
- 15:32Speaker 7: really bring something offensively to the table and defensively, or
- 15:37Speaker 7: do you want to start her and then now you're
- 15:40Speaker 7: bringing in, you know, somebody who might not be playing
- 15:45Speaker 7: as well as she is. So that's the million dollar question.
- 15:49Speaker 7: We'll find out Thursday night. I'm big first.
- 15:52Speaker 9: I don't know if it makes a huge difference, but
- 15:53Speaker 9: big picture wise, do you like this format go on
- 15:58Speaker 9: Thursday Sundays as opposed to I guess it was Wednesday
- 16:00Speaker 9: Saturday in the Big twelve and it's the same distance
- 16:03Speaker 9: between games and stuff like that. But do you like
- 16:05Speaker 9: this Thursday Sunday format or doesn't make a difference?
- 16:08Speaker 1: No, I hate it.
- 16:09Speaker 7: I think it's you know, I think it's it sends
- 16:11Speaker 7: a bad message to me personally, to your student athletes,
- 16:15Speaker 7: to your coaches. This all started Danny back in the
- 16:19Speaker 7: day when our window for TV was only one day
- 16:24Speaker 7: a week and that was on Sunday. And the commissioner
- 16:26Speaker 7: then two commissioners ago, said hey, if you want to
- 16:30Speaker 7: play on TV, you got to play on Sunday. We're
- 16:33Speaker 7: in the Bible Belt, most of the SEC's in the
- 16:36Speaker 7: Bible Belt, and you're asking these kids to play on Sundays.
- 16:39Speaker 7: You're asking coaches to work on Sunday mornings. I just again,
- 16:45Speaker 7: it fits the world, right, the world is it's that
- 16:51Speaker 7: way and I hate it though. I just think it
- 16:56Speaker 7: sends a horrible, horrible message. I have a lot of
- 16:59Speaker 7: kids grew up in the church, and whether they would
- 17:04Speaker 7: go or not, one thing's for sure. They're not going
- 17:06Speaker 7: in this format, and so I'm dead against it. I've
- 17:11Speaker 7: been raising hell about it for years. I think it's
- 17:17Speaker 7: in the old days of the Landers and Summit and
- 17:22Speaker 7: Champions and those people when you're trying to get your
- 17:24Speaker 7: teams or the game on TV, that was one thing.
- 17:29Speaker 1: But even in Landers late years.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Matthew Mitchell at Kentucky, you know myself, I think people
- 17:38Speaker 7: have seen the real value of giving kids a true
- 17:42Speaker 7: day off.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They get no true day off in January and February.
- 17:47Speaker 7: Their drave day off is Monday when they have a
- 17:50Speaker 7: physics exam or they have to go to class, or
- 17:53Speaker 7: they have a biology test. Like that's not a true
- 17:56Speaker 7: day off. Getting up and going to eight o'clock class
- 17:59Speaker 7: like my kids do, that's not a true day off.
- 18:02Speaker 7: And so I think by the time you get through
- 18:03Speaker 7: this sixteen game grind, and now they're wanting us to
- 18:06Speaker 7: play eighteen games, it's about enough playing sixteen having to
- 18:10Speaker 7: deal with this for eight weekends.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Now they want us to go to sixteen eighteen.
- 18:16Speaker 7: By the time you get to March, your kids are fried,
- 18:18Speaker 7: coaches are fried.
- 18:21Speaker 1: You're just you're really putting, you know.
- 18:24Speaker 7: And again, we're the only sport we get no spring break,
- 18:28Speaker 7: no Christmas, no Thanksgiving. I know there's sports that go
- 18:32Speaker 7: both semesters, but a lot of those sports get one,
- 18:35Speaker 7: two or all three of those.
- 18:37Speaker 1: We get none of them.
- 18:39Speaker 7: And so it's a really tough, tough grind for our kids.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And my staff.
- 18:45Speaker 7: And so I'll get off my soapbox.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You probably knew i'd get on it when you ask
- 18:51Speaker 1: the question. You're that way, but I heard it cause
- 18:56Speaker 1: the heat of league before.
- 18:57Speaker 7: But that's right, That's exactly how I feel about it.
- 19:00Speaker 7: It's embarrassing to me that that we do that, you know,
- 19:04Speaker 7: to our kids, but it is what it is, and so,
- 19:10Speaker 7: you know, I just don't think it's I don't think
- 19:15Speaker 7: it's right.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I don't think it's fair to our kids. You know.
- 19:18Speaker 7: I just don't like it. So it's just my opinion.
- 19:21Speaker 7: But I've seen the room change a little bit. You know,
- 19:26Speaker 7: you're worry about your kids, you're also worried about a staff.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You know, a lot of these staffs work really hard.
- 19:34Speaker 9: So do you have to adjust anything you're doing as
- 19:38Speaker 9: far as practice wise to give your players a little
- 19:41Speaker 9: bit more of a breather or is there any like,
- 19:44Speaker 9: you know, logistics adjustments you have to make with the
- 19:47Speaker 9: Thursday Sunday split.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Not really, I mean Monday is you know, I can't.
- 19:55Speaker 7: They don't get to sleep in, they don't get to
- 19:57Speaker 7: veg out, they don't just get to come into treatment
- 19:59Speaker 7: from a to want and go back home and lay
- 20:01Speaker 7: in the bed and and but other than that, with
- 20:04Speaker 7: my staff, yeah, I usually gave them Sunday off and
- 20:10Speaker 7: I would come in, I might work, or they might
- 20:13Speaker 7: work from home. Now on Mondays, I give them half
- 20:16Speaker 7: a morning to wash clothes, do laundry, pay bills, just
- 20:22Speaker 7: two personal things.
- 20:23Speaker 1: We meet for a meeting at lunch.
- 20:26Speaker 7: Bring I pay for lunch and bring lunch in, and
- 20:29Speaker 7: we have a staff meeting, and then we work in
- 20:31Speaker 7: the afternoon.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They work in the afternoon. I was here.
- 20:33Speaker 7: Yesterday morning at seven point thirty and dealing with things
- 20:40Speaker 7: that you have to deal with in basketball. But you know,
- 20:43Speaker 7: for them, I want to give them a little time
- 20:45Speaker 7: to kind of regroup and recharge their batteries too. My
- 20:49Speaker 7: group works really hard, so but no other than that,
- 20:52Speaker 7: it's it's what we signed up for, so we got
- 20:55Speaker 7: to do it.
- 20:56Speaker 2: How's that first start at VIC Shaeffer talking about his team,
- 21:00Speaker 2: talking about Jordan Lee being freshman the week and then
- 21:02Speaker 2: railing on the SEC for that Thursday Sunday scheduling format
- 21:07Speaker 2: that they have and he's not done with that either.
- 21:09Speaker 2: There'll be more coming up next hour. We'll hear more
- 21:11Speaker 2: from VIC with regard to that, but up next inconceivable
- 21:14Speaker 2: on a Wednesday afternoon here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 21:17Speaker 2: under the Zone way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Glad
- 21:20Speaker 2: to have you with us on this Wednesday afternoon. Hope
- 21:23Speaker 2: you're staying warm and drive. It's going to get rainy tomorrow,
- 21:26Speaker 2: but I think we're going to largely stay away from
- 21:29Speaker 2: the frozen stuff and that's good. It might be a
- 21:31Speaker 2: different story for those of you headed north to the
- 21:33Speaker 2: Dallas Forward Metroplex for the Cotton Bowl. The Cotton Bowl
- 21:38Speaker 2: Classic be the first time the Long Orange will have
- 21:39Speaker 2: played in two bowl games in the same season, not
- 21:44Speaker 2: his calendar year, because that's happened a couple of times
- 21:47Speaker 2: where they were in a January first Bowl, and then
- 21:49Speaker 2: we're in a December Bowl the next year. But the
- 21:54Speaker 2: first time they will have played certainly in two New
- 21:58Speaker 2: Year's Six Bowls in the same year, the Peach Bowl
- 22:01Speaker 2: last week, making Texas the only program to have appeared
- 22:07Speaker 2: in and won. By the way, also all six New
- 22:13Speaker 2: year Six bowls Rose Bowl. They won a couple of times,
- 22:16Speaker 2: of course, including the National Championship Orange Bowl. Last time
- 22:20Speaker 2: Texas played in the Orange Bowl January first, nineteen sixty five,
- 22:22Speaker 2: first time a bowl game was played at night. Alabama
- 22:25Speaker 2: had already been crowned the national champion and Texas it
- 22:31Speaker 2: was January versus sixty five. Arkansas won the Football Writers'
- 22:35Speaker 2: National Title. Alabama had been crowned the national champion already
- 22:40Speaker 2: by the AP and the UPI Coaches Bowl, and Texas
- 22:44Speaker 2: beat them. That was Tommy Nobus with the gold line
- 22:46Speaker 2: standing against Joe Namath. Long Orange won that one, twenty
- 22:50Speaker 2: one to seventeen. They they won the Sugar Bowl and
- 22:57Speaker 2: did that. They'd done that a couple of times. They
- 23:00Speaker 2: also won the Orange Bowl and Tom Landry was the quarterback.
- 23:03Speaker 2: January first, of nineteen forty nine, coming off the forty
- 23:06Speaker 2: eight season and the Long Horns beat Georgia in that one.
- 23:10Speaker 2: They won the Sugar Bowl a couple of times as well,
- 23:15Speaker 2: and the Cotton Bowl. They won more than any of
- 23:16Speaker 2: the other New Year's Six bowls. Oddly enough, this is
- 23:20Speaker 2: the first time Texas will have played in the Cotton
- 23:22Speaker 2: Bowl in twenty one twenty two years. January first, two
- 23:26Speaker 2: thousand and three the last time the long Horns played
- 23:28Speaker 2: in the Cotton Bowl. The quarterback was Chris Simms and
- 23:33Speaker 2: he was finishing up his collegiate career. Roy Williams had
- 23:36Speaker 2: a big day. Texas beat LSU coach by Nick Saban
- 23:38Speaker 2: beat him thirty five to twenty.
- 23:41Speaker 3: And I was a ten am.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Kickoff in Dallas in that one, and I said that
- 23:48Speaker 2: was yeah. That was the last time that they played
- 23:50Speaker 2: in it. The time before also a ten am kick
- 23:54Speaker 2: They played a couple of times it in ninety eight,
- 23:57Speaker 2: January ninety nine and the Y two K Cotton Bowl.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Ki William's final game at the end of the nineteen
- 24:02Speaker 2: ninety eight season. They beat Mississippi State thirty eight to eleven.
- 24:06Speaker 2: January first of ninety nine and January first of two thousand,
- 24:08Speaker 2: the Y two K Copon Bowls, when they lost to
- 24:10Speaker 2: Arkansas twenty seven to six. That was a game where
- 24:14Speaker 2: major appoy had the torn acl happened in that contest.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So those teams, those three Cotton Bowl winning teams were
- 24:22Speaker 2: coached by Mac Brown, and it was good to see
- 24:23Speaker 2: coach Brown last night. He and Sally moving back to
- 24:27Speaker 2: the Austin area. Mack was at the game last night.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Came by and said highly had a great visit and
- 24:34Speaker 2: is ready for he said, for the next chapter in
- 24:35Speaker 2: his life out of that after his time in his
- 24:38Speaker 2: second stint at North Carolina. Speaking of the head football
- 24:43Speaker 2: coach at the University of Texas, announced today Steve Sarkishan
- 24:49Speaker 2: is a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the
- 24:51Speaker 2: Year Award. The American Heart Association had made that announcement
- 24:54Speaker 2: to day. It's a second straight season that sark has
- 24:57Speaker 2: been a selected as a finals for the award. So
- 25:02Speaker 2: Steve sarkeisha of finalists for that award. Here are the
- 25:04Speaker 2: other finalists, Shane Beemer of South Carolina, Kurtzignetti of Indiana,
- 25:08Speaker 2: Spencer Daniels in a Boise State, Kenny Dillingham of Arizona State,
- 25:12Speaker 2: Marcus Freeman, and Notre Dame Rhett Lashley. Of SMU and
- 25:15Speaker 2: Jeff Munkin of Army. So those are the other finalists
- 25:20Speaker 2: for that award. So we'll see how that ultimately turns out. Okay,
- 25:24Speaker 2: where was I going with the what I said at
- 25:28Speaker 2: the end of the last hour about football notes and coaches.
- 25:36Speaker 2: That's sort of thing you said, I have no idea
- 25:37Speaker 2: where you're going. You should have known where I was
- 25:40Speaker 2: going with this. I was interested in your take, Cameron
- 25:44Speaker 2: on the fact that the Cowboys said no, you don't
- 25:47Speaker 2: to the Chicago Bears who asked for permission to interview
- 25:52Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy and they said no. So apparently after twenty
- 26:00Speaker 2: four hours of deliberation, the Cowboys denied the Bears a request.
- 26:04Speaker 1: According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
- 26:06Speaker 4: So who's the better man, because it's it's not the
- 26:08Speaker 4: O the better man, right, Jerry Jones, Right.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I'm asking you.
- 26:12Speaker 4: You know, well, first off, I don't know why the
- 26:14Speaker 4: Bears would want to interview Mike McCarthy. And then if
- 26:17Speaker 4: the Cowboys are gonna keep McCarthy, why would they let
- 26:20Speaker 4: him interview with them their team? So this tells me
- 26:21Speaker 4: that mich McCarthy's coming back.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I thought you might say that.
- 26:25Speaker 4: And it also confirms that I will not be back
- 26:28Speaker 4: twenty twenty five. You will continue your bride.
- 26:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 26:34Speaker 2: We've discussed this at length. Some would say at nauseam
- 26:38Speaker 2: this year about your steadfast refusal to watch them, even
- 26:42Speaker 2: though you still kind of somewhat claim them as your
- 26:45Speaker 2: favorite team. You know you can move on and pick
- 26:49Speaker 2: another team if you want.
- 26:50Speaker 1: No, no, you can.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Andy way did it now? He's got his girlfriend's influence something.
- 26:54Speaker 2: You know what team they pick now is their favorite
- 26:57Speaker 2: team to follow and cheer and root for the NFL
- 27:00Speaker 2: Frans huh, Lions. It's not the Lions. They had some
- 27:05Speaker 2: parameters involved. First of all, it couldn't be any team
- 27:08Speaker 2: that either of them had as their favorite team in
- 27:09Speaker 2: the past. She's from Wisconsin, so she was kind of
- 27:12Speaker 2: a Packer fan, but could not would not be able
- 27:15Speaker 2: to bring herself to root for any of the other
- 27:17Speaker 2: teams in the NFC norths, so that eliminates the Vikings, Bears,
- 27:19Speaker 2: and Lions. They also decided they would not adopt the
- 27:25Speaker 2: favorite team of anyone close to them relatism family, so
- 27:30Speaker 2: no Rams and a couple other teams as well. So
- 27:36Speaker 2: what did they ultimately wind up picking. They wanted to
- 27:38Speaker 2: pick up a team that they thought had some upward mobility,
- 27:43Speaker 2: a chance to at least be a playoff team in
- 27:45Speaker 2: coming years.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Which narrows the field even more so.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And then they kind of decided they didn't want to
- 27:53Speaker 2: root for a cold weather team because she had been
- 27:56Speaker 2: around that. So after the dust settled to smoke clear
- 28:00Speaker 2: the team they selected that they're going to start rooting
- 28:02Speaker 2: for the Miami Dolphins.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Yikes.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, really, okay.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Sam, Miami Dolphins, who may be having to let go
- 28:11Speaker 1: of Tyreek Hill?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because he's a cancer in the locker room.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Would would that be part of the reason why?
- 28:17Speaker 1: You know?
- 28:19Speaker 3: So, I don't know. They said they picked that.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I told him, I said, you know, you've already torn
- 28:26Speaker 2: the scab off there, you ripped the band aid off.
- 28:28Speaker 2: You know that means you can just change teams every
- 28:30Speaker 2: year if you want. It doesn't even really matter anymore.
- 28:33Speaker 2: You can just adopt a team every year and root
- 28:36Speaker 2: for them every year if you want.
- 28:38Speaker 4: So you could do the same Cam. I'm just reading
- 28:41Speaker 4: for good football. You know, I'm excited for the NFL playoffs.
- 28:43Speaker 4: You know, I'm cool with any team winning, except for
- 28:47Speaker 4: the Eagles and Commanders. But at the same time, you
- 28:51Speaker 4: know it's like, actually, good for you, dan Quinn. You
- 28:54Speaker 4: got out of Dallas and you proved yourself right. But
- 28:57Speaker 4: the FC, I love every I love every storyline in
- 28:59Speaker 4: the AFE. I love the Lions storyline. I like Sean McVay,
- 29:03Speaker 4: I love I love the Rams, I love I love
- 29:05Speaker 4: Matthew Stafford Texas guy. And there's there's some great storylines
- 29:09Speaker 4: in these playoffs. You know, the Chiefs going for the
- 29:11Speaker 4: three p ken Lamar Jackson, who might win his second
- 29:15Speaker 4: m VP.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Can he finally get over the hump the Chiefs?
- 29:19Speaker 2: Can you bring yourself the root for Pittsburgh?
- 29:22Speaker 4: That's tough. I mean they're not gonna win though, which
- 29:24Speaker 4: is which is? You know you think they'll They'll lose
- 29:26Speaker 4: to the rate. Yeah, I think Mike Tomlin he gets
- 29:28Speaker 4: the ten wins, he gets the playoff berth, and he's
- 29:30Speaker 4: all right, we're good, We're done. I mean, Russell Wilson
- 29:33Speaker 4: and Justin Fields are not going to win you a
- 29:35Speaker 4: playoff game, even the Chargers. What Chargers and Broncos. What
- 29:38Speaker 4: Sean Payton has done in his second year with bo
- 29:40Speaker 4: Nix as a rookie quarterback and that incredible defense that
- 29:43Speaker 4: has a lot of former Texas Longhorns playing some big roles,
- 29:46Speaker 4: Brandon Jones, PJ. Locke to name a few. And in
- 29:49Speaker 4: the Chargers, you know, like Harball, who's got it better
- 29:51Speaker 4: than us?
- 29:52Speaker 1: Nobody? Nobody like People don't don't like the Harball stick.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I like it.
- 29:55Speaker 4: I think he's a hell of a football coach. You
- 29:57Speaker 4: got Cam Dicker as the kicker. That's a fun you know,
- 30:00Speaker 4: with some new playoff teams, it's fun to see.
- 30:02Speaker 3: I like Herbert LA team.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yeah, LA team.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Actually, as history teaches us, they actually started in Los
- 30:10Speaker 2: Angeles in nineteen sixty the AFL reached the AFL championship game,
- 30:14Speaker 2: lost to the Oilers, and then and then they moved
- 30:18Speaker 2: to San Diego because they could be with the Rams.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Well now they've backed obviously, so yeah, they're they're a
- 30:24Speaker 2: playoff team.
- 30:25Speaker 3: What about the Texans?
- 30:27Speaker 1: Could you be a Texans fan?
- 30:28Speaker 4: I just the way their their offense is and how
- 30:30Speaker 4: banged up they are. I just don't see them making
- 30:32Speaker 4: a run.
- 30:33Speaker 2: But yeah, or can you or can you not bring
- 30:35Speaker 2: yourself through for any team from the city of Houston.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm okay with the Texans. Okay, I'm okay with
- 30:40Speaker 1: the Texans. That's fine. I just don't think they have
- 30:43Speaker 1: a chance. Sorry, Texans fans.
- 30:45Speaker 3: I think I think the Chargers have a good chance
- 30:48Speaker 3: to beat them. Having said that, that is almost like
- 30:52Speaker 3: a fifty to fifty game to me, mainly because it's
- 30:55Speaker 3: in Houston.
- 30:57Speaker 4: If LA can establish the run and get the ground
- 31:00Speaker 4: game going in Stroud's a little bit shaky interception here
- 31:03Speaker 4: or there, I think the Chargers can steal that m H.
- 31:06Speaker 4: And like again, I don't think Houston has a great
- 31:09Speaker 4: home field advantage, right, neither did the Chargers. So I
- 31:12Speaker 4: mean again, maybe it's just kind of exed it out
- 31:14Speaker 4: because I don't think the Chargers have fans that will travel.
- 31:16Speaker 4: But I don't expect, you know, NRG to be rocking
- 31:21Speaker 4: on Saturday.
- 31:22Speaker 2: The Cameron's picks and I didn't bring him in with
- 31:25Speaker 2: me today. But you have the Jets in the playoffs.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Think of the Jets, And I went off the notion
- 31:32Speaker 4: let's see because in the last I think last three years,
- 31:35Speaker 4: at least seven teams from last year's playoffs did not
- 31:39Speaker 4: make it the following year. This year, I think only
- 31:42Speaker 4: four teams. Only four teams that were in last year's
- 31:44Speaker 4: playoffs that make it this year. So it was a
- 31:45Speaker 4: little bit of a down. You had the forty nine
- 31:47Speaker 4: ers in the playoffs, but of course they had that
- 31:50Speaker 4: year from hell. Had the Bengals in the playoffs. They
- 31:52Speaker 4: struggled the Jets pick. Yeah, that was a dumb thick.
- 31:54Speaker 4: I've had too much invested in Aaron Rodgers and in
- 31:58Speaker 4: big shot Bob sala as a head coach. But I
- 32:02Speaker 4: you know, I think uh. I think I had the
- 32:04Speaker 4: had the Rams in the playoffs.
- 32:05Speaker 1: He had them in the playoffs.
- 32:07Speaker 4: You did had the Rams. I did not have Minnesota.
- 32:10Speaker 4: I did up Green Bay, I did at Philadelphia. I
- 32:11Speaker 4: did not pick the Cowboys. I told everybody that you
- 32:14Speaker 4: did not. But I think you picked somebody like the
- 32:16Speaker 4: Saints Atlanta.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I think Atlanta, well, they went down to the last week,
- 32:21Speaker 2: like I had the Dolphins in. They went down to
- 32:23Speaker 2: the last week to get in to the playoffs.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 32:28Speaker 2: And and then you had I think we both had
- 32:30Speaker 2: Kansas City, yeah, uh in in in the Super Bowl.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I think my super Bowl pick was Chiefs Lions.
- 32:39Speaker 3: I think we both did. I think we both did
- 32:41Speaker 3: and picked the Chiefs to win.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Are you gonna would you change your pick if you
- 32:44Speaker 4: could tell what we're gonna do.
- 32:46Speaker 1: What we're gonna do.
- 32:46Speaker 2: First segment next hour is we're gonna We're gonna go
- 32:50Speaker 2: ahead and uh pick our our our NFL playoff teams
- 32:56Speaker 2: because by the time we reconvene.
- 32:59Speaker 1: It be tough to do.
- 33:01Speaker 2: I will check in tomorrow obviously from the Dallas Forward area,
- 33:04Speaker 2: but we're gonna, we're gonna make our picks. Coming up
- 33:06Speaker 2: all right, up next more from Vic Shaffer, Texas women's
- 33:09Speaker 2: basketball head coach.
- 33:10Speaker 3: When we continue on AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Let's hear some more from Texas women's basketball coach Vic
- 33:15Speaker 2: shape You heard him last hour when he got on
- 33:17Speaker 2: his soapbox, because I think Danny Davis and the Austin
- 33:20Speaker 2: American stations put him up on the soapbox and let
- 33:22Speaker 2: him rant and rail about the SEC scheduling women's games
- 33:29Speaker 2: on Thursdays and Sundays Thursday's. Vic doesn't have a problem
- 33:33Speaker 2: with it's Sundays he is the problem with for any
- 33:36Speaker 2: number of reasons, mainly not having a day off, but
- 33:38Speaker 2: also he said some of his players and expressing concerns
- 33:41Speaker 2: about you know, they can't go to church on Sunday,
- 33:45Speaker 2: you know, unless it was real early for a home
- 33:47Speaker 2: game that couldn't do it on the road. There was
- 33:49Speaker 2: those kinds of things, and that all of that rolls
- 33:51Speaker 2: into some of the concern He had some more thoughts
- 33:53Speaker 2: on that and some other items as well.
- 33:56Speaker 10: Yeah, coach, I want to go back to the Sunday
- 33:58Speaker 10: thing because I'm kind of interested in that. And you know,
- 34:00Speaker 10: watching that national broadcast we all played Oklahoma, one of
- 34:04Speaker 10: Rory's goals for the resolutions was to read the whole Bible.
- 34:07Speaker 10: And so do you kind of feel like you have
- 34:10Speaker 10: more of a spiritual bearing on Sundays as a head
- 34:14Speaker 10: coach since no one's really going to church?
- 34:16Speaker 1: And how has that? Have you seen kind of religion
- 34:18Speaker 1: played a factor in the locker room? Yeah?
- 34:21Speaker 7: So typically, and I didn't do it this past sy,
- 34:26Speaker 7: but typically I read them my Bible study for that
- 34:33Speaker 7: day at pregame, and I try to just keep it,
- 34:40Speaker 7: you know, as short as I can, but I go through.
- 34:43Speaker 1: I have the coach's.
- 34:44Speaker 7: Bible, and you know, I'll read that day's you know,
- 34:51Speaker 7: devotional and to them and just to just to give
- 34:57Speaker 7: them five minutes worth, you know, ten minutes worth, you know,
- 35:01Speaker 7: I listened to my preacher while I'm running on that
- 35:05Speaker 7: day before the game.
- 35:06Speaker 1: But again that's not the same as being in.
- 35:09Speaker 7: The house of the Lord, and so I try to,
- 35:15Speaker 7: you know, expose them to it. I do think I
- 35:18Speaker 7: have a lot of great kids that you know, grew
- 35:21Speaker 7: up in that grew up in the church or do
- 35:23Speaker 7: believe in God. And you know, it's whether they would
- 35:29Speaker 7: go or not. They're definitely not going in this setup.
- 35:34Speaker 11: Yeah, well, why are you so so shy about this?
- 35:38Speaker 11: I don't know why you don't speak out a little
- 35:39Speaker 11: bit more seriously, if you pulled all the coaches, would
- 35:45Speaker 11: they back to you and try to avoid Sundays?
- 35:49Speaker 7: Well, you know, Kurk, one thing that even here at Texas,
- 35:56Speaker 7: some of our best crowds you know that we're going
- 35:59Speaker 7: to have during the year are playing on Sundays, and
- 36:02Speaker 7: so you know, that's what probably administrations want you to do,
- 36:10Speaker 7: you know, for us, if we want to play in
- 36:12Speaker 7: front of some not But I think we play in
- 36:14Speaker 7: front of good crowds on Saturday too. And I think
- 36:17Speaker 7: if you probably ask the people work in the game,
- 36:20Speaker 7: would you rather work two games on Saturday or one
- 36:22Speaker 7: on Sunday? They probably go, Hey, let's go to on Saturday,
- 36:26Speaker 7: so they have Sunday off too. But you know, I
- 36:32Speaker 7: think we'd have some coaches that are both ways, you know.
- 36:37Speaker 7: I know, I know certain coaches are going to go, no,
- 36:39Speaker 7: I want to play on Sunday, you know. And then
- 36:42Speaker 7: there's there's some coaches like me and some others that
- 36:46Speaker 7: are like, man, it's a grind. And you know, when
- 36:51Speaker 7: you're talking about kids and quality of life for them,
- 36:56Speaker 7: the student athlete, what's best for them health wise? You know,
- 37:03Speaker 7: I don't think there's any question having a true day
- 37:05Speaker 7: off versus getting up and going to eight o'clock class
- 37:08Speaker 7: and walking around campus for half a day or taking
- 37:11Speaker 7: a test that day. That's hardly a day off mentally.
- 37:15Speaker 7: And so even though you might study on Sunday, you're
- 37:19Speaker 7: doing it on your you know, that might be a
- 37:22Speaker 7: great time to really catch up academically, you know, but
- 37:26Speaker 7: you're not going to do that because you're tied up
- 37:29Speaker 7: with shoot around eight thirty, pre game ten, play at two.
- 37:34Speaker 7: If you're at home, you get out of the locker
- 37:35Speaker 7: room at five o'clock. If you're on the road, you're
- 37:38Speaker 7: not getting home till eight nine o'clock. So it's just
- 37:43Speaker 7: you know, it's even in the Big twelve. We might
- 37:47Speaker 7: have played on Sunday, but that was National TV games.
- 37:50Speaker 7: That would be a game ESPN said, hey, we want
- 37:52Speaker 7: y'all on TV. You know, y'all got to play on Sunday.
- 37:57Speaker 7: But if you weren't on National TV, they don't have
- 37:59Speaker 7: any network. So every other game was on Saturday. And
- 38:04Speaker 7: you know, I've even proposed that, look, if we're not
- 38:07Speaker 7: on National TV on Sunday, let us play on Saturday.
- 38:12Speaker 1: But anyway, nothing about that.
- 38:16Speaker 11: On another subject, do you got any thoughts from Jay
- 38:18Speaker 11: Hartzell leaving to go to SMU and are you throwing
- 38:21Speaker 11: your name your hat in the ring?
- 38:24Speaker 7: Jay Hartzell's leaving? When did that happen this morning while
- 38:32Speaker 7: I was in practice? Obviously I need to check and
- 38:35Speaker 7: see if he called me to ask me in my opinion?
- 38:38Speaker 1: God, no mighty, nothing went to voicemail.
- 38:45Speaker 7: But I will tell you all something. I've worked for
- 38:48Speaker 7: some really good presidents. He's the best man like I
- 38:51Speaker 7: love that guy. That's I'm I'm I did not know
- 38:57Speaker 7: that that happened. I'm certainly happy for him because I
- 39:00Speaker 7: think he is a great man, and I think he
- 39:03Speaker 7: is he's the best they got. They hit a home
- 39:08Speaker 7: run at SMU. That's what they did. So I'm sure
- 39:12Speaker 7: we'll get somebody good. But man, what a home run
- 39:17Speaker 7: for SMU. Dang it.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Why do you like him so much?
- 39:24Speaker 1: Number One, He's accessible.
- 39:29Speaker 7: Anytime I needed him to help me with a recruit
- 39:32Speaker 7: and their family.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Man, he's right there. He's all in.
- 39:37Speaker 7: He sits at my games at half court, he's there
- 39:39Speaker 7: a lot. But he has what I call a presence too.
- 39:47Speaker 7: Like I think he's really smart and you need to
- 39:52Speaker 7: be obviously in that role.
- 39:54Speaker 1: But he's not one of these Ivory tower guys like.
- 39:59Speaker 7: He he's he's like me and you like, he's just
- 40:03Speaker 7: a he's really he's a humble guy. I think I
- 40:06Speaker 7: think he's you know, I just I I think he's
- 40:13Speaker 7: he's a good guy.
- 40:14Speaker 1: He's a good man, and.
- 40:17Speaker 7: He's got you know, he's got the IT factor to me,
- 40:22Speaker 7: and he's just always been super super good to me.
- 40:25Speaker 7: We've had a great relationship and you know, and I
- 40:31Speaker 7: hate to see him go.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Well.
- 40:34Speaker 3: I mean, we've covered all the non basketball topics I
- 40:37Speaker 3: wanted to ask about, But big, what did you think
- 40:40Speaker 3: of Amo the other night?
- 40:42Speaker 1: And do you want you want to see more of that. Yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: I thought she was really good the other night's.
- 40:49Speaker 7: You know, when she's healthy and feeling good, she can
- 40:52Speaker 7: be a pretty impactful player. We had the player at
- 40:56Speaker 7: five because Taylor wasn't available, and you know, she helped
- 41:00Speaker 7: us there as well, So you know, getting that from
- 41:04Speaker 7: her a double double in an SEC games really really
- 41:07Speaker 7: beneficial for us. And you know it was good to see.
- 41:12Speaker 7: I was glad to have her, that's for sure.
- 41:15Speaker 1: And Taylor is Taylor cleared for d born eight or
- 41:19Speaker 1: as of today.
- 41:21Speaker 12: Okay, coach, I'm also curious about Amo. We've seen what
- 41:25Speaker 12: she could do on the court, especially when she's healthy.
- 41:28Speaker 12: What is her impact her role on the team this year,
- 41:32Speaker 12: particularly off the court, but you know, also on it.
- 41:35Speaker 7: Well, I mean I I just think the kid has
- 41:38Speaker 7: struggled so much with her health and and with with
- 41:40Speaker 7: her knees, both of them, that it's just been really
- 41:44Speaker 7: hard for her to to, you know, be as effective
- 41:48Speaker 7: and be as impactful as she can be. Amo does
- 41:52Speaker 7: have a voice, She talks a lot and communicates with
- 41:55Speaker 7: our players quite a bit, so I think you know that.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Hasn't him undered her ability to do that.
- 42:02Speaker 7: But you know, she's impacted some big games for US
- 42:06Speaker 7: this year, but she's also been hindered quite a bit more.
- 42:10Speaker 1: And so.
- 42:12Speaker 7: I need her healthy. I mean, that's the only way
- 42:14Speaker 7: I know how to say it. It's we got to
- 42:16Speaker 7: get her healthy and keep her healthy. We can keep
- 42:18Speaker 7: her healthy the next two and a half three months.
- 42:21Speaker 7: You know, we're a little bit different team.
- 42:24Speaker 8: I think you told us right at the start of
- 42:26Speaker 8: the conference season that you explain to the team that
- 42:29Speaker 8: this great pressure defense might not always work against.
- 42:33Speaker 1: You know, SEC competition.
- 42:36Speaker 8: But you've forced fifty two turnovers in two games.
- 42:39Speaker 1: What do you attribute that to?
- 42:41Speaker 7: Well, I do think, you know, I think we've been effective,
- 42:44Speaker 7: you know, especially with Oklahoma.
- 42:46Speaker 1: I think we did a nice job.
- 42:49Speaker 7: We gave up a couple of backdoors, but other than that,
- 42:51Speaker 7: I mean we forced twenty seven turnovers on the road.
- 42:56Speaker 1: That's pretty good.
- 42:57Speaker 7: We had to offset the twenty one offensive boards gave
- 43:00Speaker 7: up again. But I thought Arkansas did a good job
- 43:03Speaker 7: against US, and and and so we constant consequently worked
- 43:08Speaker 7: really hard today on some things that we've got to
- 43:10Speaker 7: get better at, you know, on the ball. So you know,
- 43:13Speaker 7: it's a work in progress. I think you've got to
- 43:15Speaker 7: play personnel sometimes you know better than than uh than
- 43:21Speaker 7: than trying to impose your will. There's certain spots on
- 43:25Speaker 7: the floor that you have to uh impose your will,
- 43:28Speaker 7: and then there's certain spots on the floor you've got
- 43:30Speaker 7: to be careful and just try to do something different.
- 43:33Speaker 7: And so I think for us, that's my job as
- 43:36Speaker 7: a coach. I got to make sure our kids understand
- 43:39Speaker 7: that and that we go through it and they have
- 43:41Speaker 7: a real good feel for how we want to defend
- 43:44Speaker 7: things and defend sets and knowing when somebody's trying to
- 43:48Speaker 7: run their pretty offense and when they're not, because that's
- 43:51Speaker 7: two different, completely different things, and it all comes down
- 43:54Speaker 7: to competitive spirit, y'all. Toughness, you know, that's that's really
- 43:58Speaker 7: what defense comes down too.
- 44:01Speaker 2: We're gonna hear more from Vick Shaffer coming up next hour,
- 44:04Speaker 2: and he's got some other things to rant about as well,
- 44:08Speaker 2: so we'll do that. But we've got some other topics
- 44:10Speaker 2: we've got to coming up next here. On AM thirteen
- 44:12Speaker 2: under the Zone, I mentioned that tomorrow I'll be in
- 44:16Speaker 2: Arlington for the final Head Coaches Press Conference.
- 44:21Speaker 1: It takes place around twelve thirty to moor afternoon.
- 44:24Speaker 2: I mentioned that and that's when they get the two
- 44:28Speaker 2: head coaches together, sitting separated only by the actual bowl
- 44:34Speaker 2: trophy itself. It's as it is as standard as the
- 44:40Speaker 2: old Classic Coaches show. We have the play by play
- 44:43Speaker 2: guy as the host and the head coach, and you
- 44:45Speaker 2: have a potted plant and a football helmet on an
- 44:47Speaker 2: end table between him or a coffee table. Yeah, it's
- 44:50Speaker 2: been around as long as Coaches shows have been around.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Same store.
- 44:52Speaker 2: With these Bowl press conferences, they have the photo o
- 44:55Speaker 2: op because both the local TVs and the national TVs
- 45:01Speaker 2: and then the still photographers for the newspapers and wire
- 45:04Speaker 2: services and want to get the picture of the them
- 45:06Speaker 2: shaking hands and standing there with the with the bold
- 45:09Speaker 2: trophy and the and they do that. Then they sit
- 45:11Speaker 2: down and they ask questions or answered. They are asked
- 45:16Speaker 2: questions and they answered. So tomorrow is the one with
- 45:21Speaker 2: Steve Sarkesian for Texas and Ryan Day for Ohio State.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Today was the final press conference previewing the Orange Bowl,
- 45:29Speaker 2: which is tomorrow night between Penn State and Notre Dame.
- 45:32Speaker 2: She had James Franklin, the head coach of Penn State,
- 45:35Speaker 2: and Marcus Freeman, the head coach at Notre Dame is
- 45:37Speaker 2: anything meaningful?
- 45:39Speaker 1: Well get this.
- 45:43Speaker 2: James Franklin was asked about the opportunity that was there
- 45:46Speaker 2: for Penn State in the college Football Playoff, and he
- 45:48Speaker 2: said that the showdown against Notre Dame is about quote
- 45:52Speaker 2: representing our schools and our conferences. He then it said
- 45:56Speaker 2: Franklin then caught himself realizing Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman
- 45:59Speaker 2: was sitting just to his right. He goes or our conference,
- 46:03Speaker 2: excuse me, our conference. He then went on and he
- 46:10Speaker 2: said he thinks a larger college football playoff ultimately requires
- 46:14Speaker 2: more uniformity around college football, including every team to be
- 46:19Speaker 2: a part of a conference and playing the same number
- 46:22Speaker 2: of league games. Of course, No Dame is an independent.
- 46:25Speaker 2: They're one of three remaining at PS independents. They see
- 46:29Speaker 2: their status as central to their school's identity, and they
- 46:32Speaker 2: resisted chances join the Big Ten in other conferences. Of course,
- 46:35Speaker 2: they compete in the ACC for most of their other
- 46:38Speaker 2: major sports, and they have a scheduling agreement with the
- 46:40Speaker 2: AEC and football.
- 46:41Speaker 3: But that's it.
- 46:43Speaker 2: So Franklin the quote, He said, it should be a
- 46:45Speaker 2: consistent across college football. This is no knock at coach Freeman.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Other Dame. But I think everybody should be in a conference.
- 46:52Speaker 2: I think everybody should play in a conference championship game,
- 46:55Speaker 2: or nobody should play a conference championship game. I think
- 46:58Speaker 2: everybody should play the same number of conference games, so,
- 47:04Speaker 2: Franklin said. He remember he had coached at Vanderbilt. He
- 47:09Speaker 2: praised the SEC for remaining at eight league games, which
- 47:13Speaker 2: is what the league's coaches wanted. The SEC IS repeatedly
- 47:16Speaker 2: considered going to nine during Franklin's time of the Big Ten.
- 47:19Speaker 2: His quote was, I was not a math major at
- 47:21Speaker 2: Each Stroudsburg, but just the numbers are going to make
- 47:25Speaker 2: things more challenging if you're playing one more conference game,
- 47:28Speaker 2: so he said. He also highlighted other areas of the
- 47:32Speaker 2: sport that could be made more uniform, including starting the
- 47:35Speaker 2: season a week earlier to ease the strain of playing
- 47:39Speaker 2: more games with an expanded playoff.
- 47:41Speaker 1: He reiterated his desire.
- 47:42Speaker 2: To appoint a college football commissioner unaffiliated with a schooler conference,
- 47:47Speaker 2: and once again mentioned longtime coaching. Current ESPN analyst Nick
- 47:51Speaker 2: Saban is an option, along with former Washington and Boise
- 47:53Speaker 2: State coach Chris Peterson, who's now a college football analyst
- 47:57Speaker 2: for Fox and Dave Clawson, who recently stepped down a
- 47:59Speaker 2: Wake Forest's head coach. Quote, we need somebody that is
- 48:03Speaker 2: looking at it from a big picture perspective. Now, Freeman
- 48:09Speaker 2: countered by saying Notre Dame prides itself on it's independence.
- 48:12Speaker 2: He said the team uses the weekend of conference championships, which,
- 48:16Speaker 2: when they're guaranteed not to be playing, is another open
- 48:18Speaker 2: week for recovering other priorities. He also know that he
- 48:21Speaker 2: doesn't have a strong opinion on whether college football needs
- 48:24Speaker 2: more uniformity. Quote, I'm a guy that just thinks, tell
- 48:27Speaker 2: us what we're doing, and let's go and you move forward.
- 48:30Speaker 2: I love where we're at right now.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Pete Mvaqua, that's their athletic director, and our Notre Dame
- 48:34Speaker 3: administration will continue to make decisions that are best for
- 48:36Speaker 3: our program. So anyway, there's some differing opinions on that
- 48:44Speaker 3: one from a guy not only in a power for conference,
- 48:47Speaker 3: but basically a Power two coming from the Big Ten,
- 48:50Speaker 3: and one guy who continues to operate his school as
- 48:53Speaker 3: an independent and doing quite well, thank you. So there
- 48:56Speaker 3: it is Penn State and Notre Dame and tomorrow night
- 49:00Speaker 3: good football games. Notre Dame is what a slight favorite
- 49:03Speaker 3: in that like three points, maybe maybe even less than that,
- 49:08Speaker 3: might even be like one and a half, one and
- 49:10Speaker 3: a half. It could be that good tomorrow night down
- 49:14Speaker 3: in Florida.
- 49:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think with Abdul Carter's status up in the air,
- 49:18Speaker 4: I mean Franklin's at the day that when he first
- 49:21Speaker 4: he says he needs to play, and then he said,
- 49:22Speaker 4: well there'll be a game time decision. They need him
- 49:25Speaker 4: to play to win this game.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Yep.
- 49:26Speaker 4: The way he impacts the game defensively, in the way
- 49:28Speaker 4: that he can kind of handle Roley Leonard, because I'll
- 49:31Speaker 4: do Carter it'll be a tough tash with his Penn
- 49:33Speaker 4: State team.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 49:35Speaker 2: All right, we'll be back to a wrap up hour
- 49:37Speaker 2: number two here on sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone,
- 49:40Speaker 2: third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 49:42Speaker 2: Radio AM thirteen one hundred. Let me check this right now,
- 49:45Speaker 2: at exactly four o'clock, the temperature in the Greater Austin
- 49:51Speaker 2: area is a robust forty four degrees.
- 49:55Speaker 3: And that's the high right now. We've hit the high point.
- 49:59Speaker 3: It's going to fall off a little during the next hour,
- 50:01Speaker 3: and then tonight overnight it's going to get eh, mid thirties.
- 50:09Speaker 3: It's still not going to be freezing. It'll be It'll
- 50:13Speaker 3: be in the mid thirties. So anyway, it's it's certainly
- 50:17Speaker 3: not nearly as but it could be raining tomorrow. The fact,
- 50:21Speaker 3: there's a real good chance there will be some rain
- 50:22Speaker 3: tomorrow on the earth. It's just like cold drizzle.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Here in the Greater Austin, Central Texas area and the
- 50:28Speaker 2: Dallas Forworth Metroplex where the Goodyear Cotton Bowl will be
- 50:32Speaker 2: contested on Friday night, things could get a whole lot
- 50:36Speaker 2: more inclement over the next twenty four to forty eight hours.
- 50:40Speaker 2: For example, in Fort Worth right now, it's partly sunny,
- 50:44Speaker 2: they're forty one, but they could see a mixed tomorrow
- 50:48Speaker 2: of snow, sleet and freezing rain. And then Friday it
- 50:52Speaker 2: looks like snow for sure, about an eighty percent chance
- 50:55Speaker 2: of snow. So that could all happen up in the
- 50:57Speaker 2: metroplex as well. Meanwhile, Weren't basketball team will get ready
- 51:01Speaker 2: for number one Tennessee coming in to Moody Center on Saturday.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I say number one. They will fall for number one
- 51:06Speaker 2: because they lost by thirty to Florida last night. Stunning
- 51:10Speaker 2: lost their first loss of the season. But it's one
- 51:14Speaker 2: of those nights, and all teams have them where you
- 51:16Speaker 2: have nights where you just can't or don't shoot the
- 51:21Speaker 2: basketball very well. Rick Barnes, of course, four sixteen years
- 51:26Speaker 2: the coach of the Texas Long Orange, used to say
- 51:29Speaker 2: good shooting can make up for a multitude of sins,
- 51:33Speaker 2: and they had a multitude of sins last night, and
- 51:35Speaker 2: they didn't have the good shooting, and the Long Orange
- 51:38Speaker 2: didn't have a good shooting for a lot of the game.
- 51:41Speaker 2: They got better down the stretch when they made their
- 51:44Speaker 2: big push. Texas was down twenty one to second rank
- 51:48Speaker 2: to Auburn. Last night, they were down sixty one to
- 51:49Speaker 2: forty with twelve minutes plus remaining in the game and
- 51:55Speaker 2: went on a big run I think outscored the thirty
- 51:58Speaker 2: eight twenty two and manage of forty one twenty two,
- 52:01Speaker 2: managed to pull them within three twice in.
- 52:04Speaker 1: The final minute.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Couldn't finish it, however, despite a career high thirty four
- 52:10Speaker 2: points from Arthur Coloma and then also Jordan Pope was
- 52:14Speaker 2: seventeen second half points. So those were big moments there,
- 52:17Speaker 2: and they got some stops and played better and hit
- 52:19Speaker 2: some shots, but could not overcome Auburn's hugely and they
- 52:22Speaker 2: wind up losing. After the game, Eddie Orn and I
- 52:24Speaker 2: visited about these factors with long Worn's head coach Rodney Terry.
- 52:30Speaker 2: I say this up from because I know how you
- 52:32Speaker 2: feel about this. We live in the world of no
- 52:34Speaker 2: moral victories.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Having said all that, the fight, the resiliency, the toughness
- 52:38Speaker 3: your team showed from down twenty one to cut it
- 52:41Speaker 3: to three twice in the final minute of the ballgame.
- 52:43Speaker 1: You had to be pleased with that.
- 52:45Speaker 5: No, you know' ankle your same thing you just said.
- 52:47Speaker 5: I said that to our team with Texas.
- 52:49Speaker 1: We don't we don't.
- 52:50Speaker 5: We don't celebrate a more satisfied with more victories. We
- 52:54Speaker 5: expect to win every game that we line up and play,
- 52:56Speaker 5: lace them up to play. That's a really good team
- 52:58Speaker 5: over there, you know, a really good team. They're finding
- 53:01Speaker 5: four caliber team. I thought that guy showed a lot
- 53:03Speaker 5: of fight. I thought they kept competing. I think again,
- 53:06Speaker 5: you know, early in our journey here in comforts play,
- 53:08Speaker 5: our guys are learning what it takes to play for
- 53:10Speaker 5: forty minutes and when it's gonna take to win it.
- 53:13Speaker 3: In this conference, what was the biggest thing you noticed
- 53:15Speaker 3: in the final twelve minutes that turned it to where
- 53:18Speaker 3: your team.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Gave itself a chance by the fight they showed.
- 53:21Speaker 5: Well, we said we had to try to sit down
- 53:23Speaker 5: and get some stops, and if we were able to
- 53:24Speaker 5: put some stops together, we could come down and find
- 53:27Speaker 5: a way to score and get what we needed to
- 53:29Speaker 5: get done on the other end, you know, And it's
- 53:30Speaker 5: a long game and that's what our guys are finding
- 53:33Speaker 5: out again in the two games we played.
- 53:35Speaker 1: You know, both of the.
- 53:36Speaker 5: Games have come down to possession games. You know, they
- 53:38Speaker 5: extended the game over there and then we got more
- 53:40Speaker 5: points there towards the end. But really, you know, seven
- 53:42Speaker 5: minutes to go, it's anybody's game, you know, just learning
- 53:45Speaker 5: to work the game. You know, we have four new starters.
- 53:48Speaker 5: Both of those teams have older players that know how
- 53:51Speaker 5: to close our game and win games. That's that's the
- 53:54Speaker 5: growth curster for our team. But I loved that effort.
- 53:57Speaker 5: I loved are still want to and trying to get
- 53:59Speaker 5: it and we're gonna find a way.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and two of those guys that have had that
- 54:03Speaker 1: that want to.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Jordan gives you seventeen and the second half an heart,
- 54:06Speaker 2: What a ball game, a career game for him with
- 54:08Speaker 2: the thirty four.
- 54:08Speaker 5: Yeah, we did a much better job of taking care
- 54:10Speaker 5: of the basketball in the second half. We had nine
- 54:12Speaker 5: turner was in a half. That was one thing that
- 54:14Speaker 5: was really hurting us. And you know, the points in
- 54:16Speaker 5: the paint early, they made some threes early. They're a
- 54:19Speaker 5: really good shooting team, probably the best shooting team we
- 54:21Speaker 5: played all year. And again that's a team that could
- 54:24Speaker 5: go to the Final four. And I think we have
- 54:26Speaker 5: a really good team. I think we're just going through
- 54:28Speaker 5: a little growth curve in terms of understanding what it
- 54:31Speaker 5: takes to win this league.
- 54:32Speaker 6: For forty minutes, run a lot of positive takeout of
- 54:35Speaker 6: this game. But you got a tough one coming in here, Saraday,
- 54:37Speaker 6: not a lot of time to get ready. But another
- 54:39Speaker 6: team that's coming here. But I think it's you know,
- 54:41Speaker 6: these guys will build off of this one.
- 54:43Speaker 5: Again, a number one team in the country coming in
- 54:45Speaker 5: Coach Barnes. You know, his team's always physical. You know
- 54:50Speaker 5: they play with the tough defensive mindset, you know. But
- 54:54Speaker 5: we'll regroup, we'll be ready to play and ready to
- 54:57Speaker 5: compete at high level.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I have two mad basketball teams here.
- 55:00Speaker 5: On Saturday, right, Yeah, I mean, I mean it's not
- 55:02Speaker 5: easy to win in this league, and then this league's hard.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Now it's nothing. We got the best league in the country.
- 55:06Speaker 5: And you know, again every night, you got to come
- 55:09Speaker 5: play at a high level. You don't have to play perfect,
- 55:11Speaker 5: but you've got to play at a high level, and
- 55:13Speaker 5: you've got to play with a lot of urgency and
- 55:15Speaker 5: you got to be extremely tough and competitive to get
- 55:18Speaker 5: it done.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you think about that in this league on a
- 55:21Speaker 2: regular basis. Not only did Tennessee lose to Florida at
- 55:26Speaker 2: Florida and lost by thirty Kentucky, which had beaten Florida
- 55:30Speaker 2: of the weekend, and Lexington went down to Georgia and
- 55:37Speaker 2: lost by thirteen to Georgia. Now maybe, well, I started saying,
- 55:42Speaker 2: maybe the most impressive win. Listen, if you beat the
- 55:46Speaker 2: number one team in the country about thirty points, it's
- 55:47Speaker 2: probably the most impressive win.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Of the night.
- 55:51Speaker 2: And incidentally, that was the third largest blowout loss for
- 56:01Speaker 2: a number one ranked team ever. There was one Saint
- 56:06Speaker 2: John's lost to Kentucky, I believe in nineteen fifty three,
- 56:10Speaker 2: I think it was or fifty two, lost by like
- 56:13Speaker 2: forty one points. And in nineteen sixty eight, the Houston
- 56:19Speaker 2: Cougars were number one in the country and lost the
- 56:22Speaker 2: number two UCLA by thirty two points.
- 56:25Speaker 1: The lost one hundred and one to sixty nine.
- 56:26Speaker 2: The circumstances around that that was the year they had
- 56:29Speaker 2: the Game of the Century game between what was then
- 56:33Speaker 2: number one UCLA and number two Houston. They played it
- 56:37Speaker 2: in the Astrodome and that was the man who became
- 56:42Speaker 2: known as Kareem abdul ja Bardi people. Leu al Cinder
- 56:44Speaker 2: back then was the center for UCLA and Elvin Hayes
- 56:48Speaker 2: was the center for Houston, and they matched up in
- 56:52Speaker 2: the Astrodome and it was on national TV, and it
- 56:55Speaker 2: was a big moment for college basketball. And if you
- 56:59Speaker 2: ever if if you've ever seen pictures of this, this
- 57:02Speaker 2: was in the days when they didn't know how to
- 57:07Speaker 2: properly configure domed stadiums for basketball. For example, you know,
- 57:15Speaker 2: it'll be in the Alamo Dome this year. And of
- 57:17Speaker 2: course they do it different the way they raised the
- 57:19Speaker 2: level of states, but they bring in the temporary stands
- 57:22Speaker 2: on the sides to make it much more like a
- 57:24Speaker 2: basketball arena.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Not in nineteen sixty eight, in the Astrodome.
- 57:29Speaker 2: They just laid a basketball floor out right in the
- 57:31Speaker 2: middle of the dome and there was a press row,
- 57:34Speaker 2: I think, on either side, and that was it. Anybody
- 57:37Speaker 2: that had a seat to that game sat in the
- 57:39Speaker 2: regular like football or baseball seats. So it's like this
- 57:43Speaker 2: just laid out in the middle of the floor and
- 57:44Speaker 2: everybody was way back from the floor and.
- 57:46Speaker 1: No big jumbo trot either. Yeah to see it.
- 57:50Speaker 2: And Houston won that game by two of her UCLA
- 57:53Speaker 2: seventy one sixty nine. And also, to be fair and accurate,
- 57:57Speaker 2: Kareem Abdul Jabbar, back then known as Leewausin, had had
- 58:01Speaker 2: a scratch cornea and still wasn't quite one hundred percent.
- 58:04Speaker 3: But Houston won that game.
- 58:05Speaker 2: But they met up again in the final four in
- 58:09Speaker 2: the semifinals and UCLA destroyed them in the rematch, beat
- 58:12Speaker 2: them one hundred and one and sixty nine, and then
- 58:14Speaker 2: the UCLA beating North Carolina to win the national championship
- 58:17Speaker 2: that year. They beat them by twenty three in the final.
- 58:20Speaker 2: That's often been called the greatest of all those. John
- 58:23Speaker 2: Wooden coached UCLA seven consecutive national championship teams. The best
- 58:28Speaker 2: of them all Loueuse Centers junior year nineteen sixty eight,
- 58:32Speaker 2: with what else they had their unbeaten and a national
- 58:37Speaker 2: champion in nineteen sixty eight. So any time a number
- 58:41Speaker 2: one team loses by a large margin, it's noteworthy, and
- 58:46Speaker 2: Tennessee's thirty point loss at Florida last night was noteworthy,
- 58:50Speaker 2: and that it was the third largest blowout loss by
- 58:52Speaker 2: a number one team in college basketball history since the
- 58:56Speaker 2: rankings system went into play. However, the Georgia win at
- 59:04Speaker 2: home over Kentucky was impressive and maybe just as impressive
- 59:09Speaker 2: certainly as the Georgia game, and maybe right up there,
- 59:13Speaker 2: not quite to the level of Florida's thirty point win
- 59:16Speaker 2: over Tennessee. But worthy of being mentioned is Mississippi State
- 59:20Speaker 2: winning on the road at Vanderbilt, which had gotten off
- 59:22Speaker 2: to a great start, but Mississippi State went in there
- 59:24Speaker 2: and got out.
- 59:25Speaker 3: To a huge lead and then eased in for the win.
- 59:29Speaker 3: So Chris Chian's team is I think fourteen and one now,
- 59:35Speaker 3: so they're either fourteen to one or fifteen to one,
- 59:38Speaker 3: so they're off to a great start. Texas does play
- 59:42Speaker 3: Mississippi State one time. It's the next to last game
- 59:46Speaker 3: fourteen and one.
- 59:47Speaker 2: They played them next to last game of the regular
- 59:49Speaker 2: season in Starkville at the Hump Humphrey Coliseum, So something
- 59:55Speaker 2: to take note of.
- 59:56Speaker 4: A quick note on the Auburn game last night, Craig, Yeah,
- 59:59Speaker 4: Texas actually moved the four spots in the kimpon rankings
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: after last night. Yeah, it reminded me a lot of
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: last year's lost to Houston at home at Moody yea
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: top ten, top five Houston team came in on Big
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: Monday Texas. Texas played them really well. Now I think
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: they actually led in that game against Houston, whereas against
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: Auburn mostly trailing but ended up losing by you know,
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: less than single digits. So as artist said, and this
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: team is learning what it's going to take the you know,
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: contend and SEC play. And for Texas fans who are
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: just you know, reacting off of these first two games
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: in conference play, hey, the front of this schedule is insane.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: I mean, the first five games Texas plays a SEC
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: play against top twenty five teams. Auburn, on the other hand,
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: only plays only has to play one top twenty five
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: Teamsissippi State. So you know, wait until March before you
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: decide what to make of this. Texas Certainly they're still
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: they're still you know, they're still figuring out their offense
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: in the chemistry, right and no Kenda Weaver yesterday, and
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: the second half of the SEC schedule was a little
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: bit easier than the first half. So so is this
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: team can grow together and stick through it against this
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: tough opening slate. I think it's going to help them
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: the second half of conference play season, you know, maybe
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: make a run, get back off the bubble, do some
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: damage in the SEC tournament and who knows what can happen.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: And as is the case with football, as was the
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: case with football, there will be some cannibalizing. Yes, that
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: happens in the SEC. Teams will be knocking one another
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: off left and right, so we'll see.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And in this unique.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Round robin schedule, so to speak, it kind of reminds
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: me of the old Big twelve schedule that Texas used
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: to play, but that was even more uniform, almost called
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: scheduling North and scheduling South, even though they were not
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: in separate divisions, but they would only play the teams
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: from the geographics scheduling North like one time one time
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: against Kansas, one time against k State, one time against Nebraska,
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: one time against Missouri, one time against Colorado they would play,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: and one time against Iowa State when those teams were
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: all in the league.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: I mean Joel Nari's latest bracketology. Oklahoma seven seed, Ole
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: miss An eight seed. Those are two teams that can
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: be Sweet sixteen bound, easily lead eight bound. It's just
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: you mentioned the cannibal the cannibalization of this conference. There's
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: going to be some messy seed teams that are going
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: to be a high low seed, but they're going to
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: I think they're going to be a popular pick to
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: go deep because they have that tough resume. They've played
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: the tougher teams.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: True, and even though the NCAA didn't announce they're not
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: using the Ken Pom rankings anymore as an evaluative tool,
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: it's still a good measuring stick to do that as
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: well as looking at the net rankings. All Right, we
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: shift from men's basketball to women's basketball. The number five
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: team in the country, the Texas Longhorns. Tomorrow night host
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: number eighteen Alabama. The two teams are both fifteen and
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: one going into the game. Remember Texas beat Alabama in
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year Moody Center.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Christy Curry brings another really talented group in the Moody
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: Center tomorrow night. We'll hear more from Vic Schaffer coming up.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: You're on Sports Radio AM thirteen hunder the Zone. All right,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: let's talk NFL because we had some good predictions and
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: we had some stinkers at the start of the year
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: about teams we thought would get into the playoffs.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: You had the Jets getting in. Why don't we focus
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: on the positives the team.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. I'm trying to think of I
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: had the Cowboys in, so.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: You know, I can tell you who I had. I had.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: I had the out of the AFC yep East, I
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: had Bills yep.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: In Jets YEP.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: In the AFC North, I believe I had the Bengals
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: and Ravens. That's four teams in the NFC South AFC South,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: excuse me I had. I think I only had the
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: Texans five. And then in the AFC West, I had
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: the Chiefs, and I think I said the Chargers. That's right, Okay,
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: that's right, So I go was wrong in the Jets.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: And then in the AFC I had the doll fits
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: in who didn't get in, yeah, which I think is
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: a good pick and who knew to it would get
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: his thirtieth concussion.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: This year, right right, And I had the Bengals in
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: as well with that h's in.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: The final week and in the final week for the
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Bengals and.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: The Dolphins, that's right, all right, So NFC I had
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: the Cowboys in, which.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: Was not a not a good pick, I think NFC
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: I was. I was a little bit more off on
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: were you. Well see you have the Saint and Eagles
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: from the east, which is correct. Yeah, in the in
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: the North, I think I just had Packers line, so
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: that's three teams. In the South, I think I had
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: the Falcons four, and then I had the forty nine
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: Ers and Rams in the Rams. Yeah, who was my
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: I think I either picked the Bears at the Seahawks
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: as my second one, you know what, it was the Bears.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I was high on.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: I was high on the Bears, which, like the Jets,
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: huge mistake, you know, look back on it, you know,
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: I regret my actions.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: But we move on.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Okay, all right, let's talk about the first of all
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: the wildcard matchups on Saturday. This might be the best
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: game of the weekend. Texans Chargers, Really you think so?
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: I think so.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: I think this has a good chance to be good.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I will go with the Texans narrowly, but I won't
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: be surprised one bit if the Charger. It's a five
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: to four matchup, and I think it plays like a
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: five to four matchup.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I think the Chargers win this. Okay.
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: I like I like Harball, I like Herbert, like the
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: rushing attack, Like their receivers that more healthy than the
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: Texans right now. Okay, Houston's kind of limping into the playoffs.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I like the Ravens.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Baltimore gets refined. I think Tucker has
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: a big game, you know, because he had a couple
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: of big misses in the first meeting, which Pittsburgh won.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I think they bounce back. All right.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Sunday, Denver Buffalo. There are people who are giving the
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Broncos a chance in this game.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Good defense, but I think Josh Allen's playing like Superman,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: and I think it'll be too much for Denver to handle.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: I agree, I like Buffalo, Green Bay at Philadelphia.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Any chance for the Packers to do it as a
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: seven seed second year in a row.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: Christian Watson done for the year, Jordan Love, he keeps
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: getting injured. Philadelphia is I think, played like the best
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: team in football over the past month, sneakily.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: I like Philadelphia. They rested Saquon Barkley. Yeah, it's gonna
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: be tough to beat the Eagle, especially in Philly. Washington
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: at Tampa Bay this also could be one of the
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: better games of the weekend.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are leading Tampa Bay.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: They're favored by three.
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: I like Washington just because I think jayde and Daniels
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: can give you a little bit more than Baker Mayfield.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: And I think the Bucks had a little bit of
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: an easier schedule and also kind of limped into the playoffs.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: But we'll see.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: I'm gonna do the same thing I'm gonna go with.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to Washington and then Monday night Vikings
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: at Rams.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: I like your Rams, Greg, I like your Rams. I
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: think they're gonna be able to get to Sam Darnold,
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: and I think we're gonna see a big game from
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Karen Williams, from Cooper Cup and from your from your Rams.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: All right, Well, did the Rams beat him on that
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Thursday night game? There?
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: They did?
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: All right, I'll go I don't feel real good about it,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: but I'm trying to figure it out. If it's as
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: much just being bummed about McVeigh resting the starters and
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: dropping that game to the Seahawks. It would have given
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: them the three seed, and it would have felt a
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: lot better about them playing Washington in Minnesota because then,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: even if they win, the prize for that is a
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: ticket to Detroit, whereas had they won, of course going
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: to Philly, what could be a great Yeah, it might
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: be in the weather. The Rims barely got past the
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Jets and the cold weather, so you know, yeah, you
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: may be right. And they did play the Lions tough
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: on Opening night, lost that game, so we'll see. And
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: the Lions number one seed for the first time ever.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: All right, coming up, we're do you have one yet?
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Oh well, I'm gonna stick with my original pick of
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Kansas City in Detroit, and I'm gonna pick the Detroit
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Lions to win their first Super Bowl.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna flip it. I'm gonnay, We're gonna get a
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: rematch at Kansas City. Philadelphia.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: Okay, all right, there we go.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: All right, coming up, we're going to hear more from
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Vic Shafer because because we can have plenty to talk about,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: he'll talk more about his players and this matchup with Alabama,
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: which is going to be very, very difficult. Before we're done,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: we'll have a little more on the NBA the big
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: matchup Oklahoma City at Cleveland tonight. Cam's thoughts on that
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: big matchup, So we'll have that and a reminder Long
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Worn Weekly the recording with Rodney Terry comes we at
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: six o'clock tonight from Pluckers the West Campus location. Air
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: tomorrow night at six, but we'll be there to record
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: it at six o'clock. We'll continue on AM thirteen hundred
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: The Zone. All right, let's burn right on into Vic Schafer,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: who was claiming to be an Elvis fan as well.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: We've heard from Vic in the first two hours of
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: the program, excerpts from his weekly media availability the Zoom
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: and Vic you've heard him really be on a roll
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: on certain topics. So let's go back to the final
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: portion of this with long Worne's head coach, Vic Schaffer.
- 1:09:00Speaker 10: Yeah, Coach, I just want to go back to the
- 1:09:01Speaker 10: inconsistencies with the health at the BIGS position with Taylor
- 1:09:05Speaker 10: and Amo, like, does that kind of force you to
- 1:09:07Speaker 10: maybe do that four guard line up a little bit
- 1:09:10Speaker 10: more or has that come up at all?
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: You know, the analytics say we're better with the four
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: guard lineup, Just so everybody knows, I mean, the analytics
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: are not and day. You know, if I coach by
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: my eye and buy you know, the way I've done
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: things a lot in the past, you know, I might
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: not play it as you know, I might not play
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: it as much on some nights, I might play it
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: way more than I'm playing it now. But the analytics
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: say we're way better with four guards on the floor,
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: and we're better in transition, and I do think we'd
- 1:09:50Speaker 7: probably be better in the half court a lot of
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: nights defensively. So I think, you know, again, people know
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: my team, they know my personnel, and so they're going
- 1:10:04Speaker 7: to try to do certain things. The first two teams
- 1:10:06Speaker 7: we've played this year have really tried to attack us
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: in some different ways and put us in a in
- 1:10:12Speaker 7: some awkward positions.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: And so we've you know, we've got to be able to.
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: Adjust and realize that early on and then attack them
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: in in a way that we can score and uh
- 1:10:22Speaker 7: and defend.
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: Big You mentioned postgame about she's off night. I'm kind
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: of wondering with her kind of struggling a little bit
- 1:10:33Speaker 9: this season. You know, are you concerned about that? Do
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: you think she'll just figured it out? She is a
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: fifth year player. Is that a concern for for you
- 1:10:41Speaker 9: at this time?
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: Well, yeah, I mean it's I'm concerned about it. You know,
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: she's she's uh, you know, it's a kid that works
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: really hard and and you know she she's got some
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: some little nagging things going on too, that you know,
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: she doesn't speak about and doesn't talk much about.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: But I think they're they're affecting her a little bit.
- 1:11:04Speaker 7: But you know her and Booker, you know those two man,
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: I'm going to that well every night.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Like those kids.
- 1:11:14Speaker 7: Those both those kids have been to the Wars and
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: those are two of the most consistent players I've ever
- 1:11:20Speaker 7: coached in my life. So I'm going to them a bunch.
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: You know, Shay brings so much to the table from
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: a just a role player and knowing her role and
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: doesn't try to do too much. But you got to
- 1:11:37Speaker 7: have players like that because when you have other players
- 1:11:40Speaker 7: like Rory and book and two five players down there
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: are shooting seventy something percent and sixty something percent.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: You just got to do your job.
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: And you know Booker, she enjoys the past as much
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: as the score. You know, that kid is so unselfish,
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: almost to a fault. You know, she had a couple
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: of turnovers the other night where she's she's trying to
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: make a really really good pass. And because she's that way,
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: she's just a That's what makes her one of the
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: best players in the country is her vision, her unselfishness.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: You know, she wants that, she wants that role.
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: She's not all about I got to have this many points.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: She's about I just want to impact the game. And
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: she can.
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: I mean, that's what that's what's so special about the
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: kid is in and about her not only her mental approach,
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: you know, but also her her game and their skill set.
- 1:12:39Speaker 7: She just as we all saw last year when we
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: played her at point, she she just she can do
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: it all. And I'm just trying to get her to
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: do a little bit more in every avenue and.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: Help her to realize.
- 1:12:54Speaker 7: You know, she's shooting forty nine percent on the season,
- 1:12:56Speaker 7: forty six from three. This time last year, she was
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: shooting forty two per y'all. So she's way better, way better,
- 1:13:04Speaker 7: and she's still our leading scorers. She's still somebody I
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: want to go to, you know, a lot, and you know,
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: I think we as a team need to, you know,
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: I think we can do some things with her that
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: really can keep people uncomfortable. And so, you know, it's
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: still January. I still put in a lot of stuff
- 1:13:25Speaker 7: between now in March, and I think that's the challenge
- 1:13:28Speaker 7: with this team is how much can they absorb. My
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: veterans can absorb a lot. It's those three freshmen that
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: I worry about.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna go.
- 1:13:37Speaker 12: You mentioned the importance of toughness. I'm sure that you
- 1:13:40Speaker 12: have ways you coach toughness, but also know that you
- 1:13:43Speaker 12: recruit it, putting you on the spot here. But do
- 1:13:45Speaker 12: you have a story about being on the recruiting trail
- 1:13:48Speaker 12: and seeing toughness and just knowing like this is my
- 1:13:51Speaker 12: type of player based on that moment.
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: Well, I mean, Justice Carleton is the most physical high
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: school kid I've ever seen. Like she head hunts your
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: chest plate like she ain't trying to dodge you, you know,
- 1:14:04Speaker 7: and at this level, you know, you got to be
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: a little bit careful because there's people that will take charges.
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: But that kid don't dodge contact when she has the ball.
- 1:14:13Speaker 7: She's head hunting you. You know, she's kind of one
- 1:14:16Speaker 7: of those full backs that doesn't try to run around you.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: She's trying to run through you.
- 1:14:22Speaker 7: And so but I can't get her to post up sometimes,
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: and that's with that same mode, if you know what
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: I mean. I'm trying to get her to really be
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: an aggressive post up player too, because she's very aggressive
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: with the ball off the bounce, like she's unbelievably aggressive.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: But really really physical kid.
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: And of course Jordan Lee was a great charge taker
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: in high school AAU, you know, which again you got
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: to be tough and physical to do that.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: And so.
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: You know, that's something that I noticed when we when
- 1:14:54Speaker 7: recruiting her. And so those are things that you know,
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: when you're recruiting kids, you really notice. And again, all
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: these kids played big minutes in high school and that
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: takes an amount of toughness too. All these kids were
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: kids that other teams were trying to get in foul
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: trouble because for their respective high school teams, if they
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: could get them in foul trouble, they'd have a chance
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: to beat them, and so now they come here, well,
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: it's a way different level dealing with college coaches and
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: college players that are trying to get you in foul trouble,
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: take you out, not let you score. And so it's
- 1:15:37Speaker 7: not like in high school when you got five bunch.
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: You know, five players out there that are five to
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: five double team and you. This level is way different
- 1:15:45Speaker 7: when somebody doubles you here or plays trying on two
- 1:15:48Speaker 7: boxing one. It's a way different diamond in two boxing
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: one than the you know, the the five little ones
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: that we're trying.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: To do it.
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: Yeah, quickly, Beck, I'm sorry, Booker out is out rebounding
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: everybody but your two centers. Is that what makes you
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: confident that in the four guard lineup because she's one.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Of the four Yeah, no, I think you're absolutely right.
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: Plus, her athleticism and her size at that position really
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: really allow her to really be a factor both offensively
- 1:16:24Speaker 7: and defensively. In my mind, you know, in that lineup,
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: she potentially would be matched up with a four player,
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: and a lot of times, you know that four player
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: ain't out there on the perimeter like them other three,
- 1:16:39Speaker 7: so you don't have to chase them around near as
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: much as you do that one.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Two, and three.
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: So sometimes you like playing that position a little more
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: because all you got to do is lay on them
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: in the whole little bit or on the block and
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: den I am down there versus dealing with pick and
- 1:16:52Speaker 7: roll and somebody driving on you. So but you know,
- 1:16:57Speaker 7: I think for her, it's just her skill set that
- 1:17:01Speaker 7: separates her. You know, they're gonna have to make up
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: their mind who they're gonna put on her, and nine
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: times out of ten it ain't gonna be good and
- 1:17:08Speaker 7: for them, and it's gonna be really good for her.
- 1:17:11Speaker 7: So but I think that's what makes the kids so
- 1:17:13Speaker 7: dynamic and so special.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: We all know she can play point.
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: She did it last year, and when she got thrown
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: in the fire, that's not you know, that wasn't her
- 1:17:21Speaker 7: natural position coming out of high school and coming here.
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: But I think we did a good job developing her
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: and she did a great job embracing the challenge of
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: being our point guard.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: And then she's our point guard.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: But she wins the three Player of the Year award
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: with the WBCA, and so you know, that's the thing
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: about book. That's why she's gonna be great for fifteen
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: twenty years down the line. People know that at the
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: next level, they know she can play one, two, three,
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: and four, and it just really is what allows her
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: to separate herself when you start looking at you know, again,
- 1:18:02Speaker 7: even for us, you want players that are multi dimensional,
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: You want players that can play multiple positions, and she's
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: certainly that.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: And then so there it is the comments from head
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: coach Fix Shaeffer. Big game tomorrow night, number five Texas,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: number eighteen Alabama to loss his total between the two
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: of them, a rematch of the NCAA second round game of.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: A year ago.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
