- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of two shot
- 0:11Tuesday. Barry Nixon along with the one
- 0:13and only Jason Riley. And of course, one of our
- 0:16favorites of all time, Rob Pete's The Movie Guy is back to
- 0:19discuss not one but two movies. And we're going to get into wow
- 0:23back rooms and the newest offering from Steven Spielberg,
- 0:27Disclosure Day, Rob. Little indie director?
- 0:31Yep, it's good to be back. Spielberg Hey.
- 0:34OK, Got it. Yeah.
- 0:35Yeah, never. Yeah, he's fairly new, Fairly
- 0:37new. But we'll, you know, we'll see.
- 0:39We'll see. Yeah.
- 0:40OK. Well, what are you saying?
- 0:43We kick us off Jay, with the shots for the evening.
- 0:46Why don't you get us going there?
- 0:47Yeah, I have got in honor of two movies, I've put 2 great things
- 0:50together, Kool-aid and Water together in one glass.
- 0:54Orange. Flavored Barry, what have you
- 0:56got? Well, I'm actually having some
- 0:58alcohol tonight, Jay, so I'm going with the Bushmills 12
- 1:02year. Nice.
- 1:04Yeah, Robert. Yeah, I'm drinking glass of just
- 1:07pure, unadulterated. It's vodka.
- 1:10Nice. It's just pure vodka.
- 1:12It's all it's going down. I love it.
- 1:13I like that Mad Men style glass as well.
- 1:16Or Tumblr. That's a that's a good looking
- 1:17Tumblr right there. That's a Tumblr.
- 1:19Cheers. Cheers, Chin.
- 1:20Chin. Mercy All right, let's start
- 1:24with back rooms. Rob.
- 1:27This was one we saw at the time, this recording probably 2 or so
- 1:30weeks ago, we saw because it was getting getting great reviews.
- 1:33People were talking about it. It wasn't a bit of a phenomenon.
- 1:37Yeah. Rob, you, you know, a little bit
- 1:39more about the background of this person who kind of came out
- 1:41of nowhere and then suddenly a 24 gave him a motion picture of
- 1:45his own. So why do you take it from
- 1:46there? Yeah, it's a guy named Kane
- 1:48Parsons who went on on YouTube. He's named Kane Pixels.
- 1:52So he's a, he was like a 16 year old guy who was, you know,
- 1:55interested in, in using Blender to create 3D places and stuff.
- 1:59And I think he was kind of like inspired by reading about this
- 2:02lore of the backrooms in, in places like 4 Chan and corners
- 2:06of the Internet where, you know, things happen, people talk about
- 2:09weird stuff. Creepypastas come to be.
- 2:12Yes, exactly. Creepypastas, yeah.
- 2:15No, Jay, never say that cat. Yeah, you're, you're a, you're a
- 2:20boomer for, for love, love. Yeah, Boomer for love.
- 2:23OK, so backrooms 3D art. What?
- 2:26No, Yeah. So he basically just was
- 2:28inspired by this kind of like Internet based lore about these
- 2:31like office spaces that are empty but they just keep going
- 2:35forever. Like you basically like you
- 2:37would, you would kind of walk through your wall and end up in
- 2:40this whole place. You'd fall into your wall or
- 2:43fall through. When that happens, yeah, at the
- 2:45office that would happen. You're basically it's called no
- 2:47clipping. It's it's like in the old the
- 2:49old video games, you would you could no clip yourself through
- 2:51walls. So it's kind of what that is OK.
- 2:53And yeah, So what we're learning today, we're learning.
- 2:56I'm gonna go. I've never heard of no clipping
- 2:57but. I'm gonna go a little slower,
- 2:59yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:00Please do. Yeah.
- 3:01So basically we're basically yeah, but yeah.
- 3:04There's this isn't really a game thing, this is just lore and it
- 3:07includes game like stuff in it. But anyway, the idea is he ended
- 3:11up it's general lore. Yeah, OK, got it.
- 3:14There's nothing really in the back rooms except for the rooms
- 3:16themselves, unless you explore there might be.
- 3:18Now video games have been made of the back rooms in which they
- 3:21put creatures in. But Kane Pixels or Kane Parsons,
- 3:24what he ended up doing at 1617 years old was creating these
- 3:28incredibly realistic looking 3D environments and then attaching
- 3:32almost like a like a old fashioned video camera to the,
- 3:36to the camera section. So it looks like it's first
- 3:38person perspective. It actually looks like you're in
- 3:40these real, like they look, everything looks real in the so
- 3:43it kind of in in his short movies that he did for you 2 got
- 3:46it. OK.
- 3:47And this is as a as a teenager and he he was just killing it
- 3:50and making these amazing cool videos.
- 3:52And I think AA24 saw that and they, they were quite popular.
- 3:56I'd watch them ages ago. I thought they were great.
- 3:58And I was like, this guy should be doing other things.
- 3:59But so they gave him a a deal. You just make a backrooms movie.
- 4:02Yeah. Well, I told yeah, it's all
- 4:04Yeah, it's all yeah. So he did a movie based on that,
- 4:07and they actually built sets this time.
- 4:09It wasn't all CG. It was all real sets and.
- 4:12You said it was a 30,000 square foot set, in fact, and
- 4:15apparently some of the actors did become lost at points during
- 4:19the shooting because it was just such a massive real set, like
- 4:22Rob said, 30,000 square foot. So that's pretty big.
- 4:25Nice. Yeah.
- 4:26And it's it's kind of a oppressive because you're in
- 4:28this place. It just never ends.
- 4:30But anyways, it's a fascinating sort of like Internet lore thing
- 4:33that that has become an interesting movie.
- 4:35And the movie doesn't you know, you think, what are you going to
- 4:36do with that movie except for walk around the back rooms and
- 4:39kind of be surprised when things are around the potentially
- 4:42around the corner? Well, they ended up adding a
- 4:44story to it and giving, giving it a little bit of AI would say,
- 4:47like the, the main theme is, is sort of not being able to let go
- 4:51of, of trauma that's happened to you and how that translates.
- 4:55So basically the, the, the, the main guy in the movie is I
- 4:58believe his wife has left him and, and all that.
- 5:01So he kind of runs this furniture store on his own and
- 5:03it's, he's not really happy where he is.
- 5:06He thinks he's OK, but he's actually not.
- 5:08And the backrooms kind of reflect that.
- 5:09He falls and he clips into the back rooms through the basement
- 5:12of of his furniture shop. Does he go to the backroom to
- 5:15get stock for somebody? Like is there a reason for him
- 5:18to go? I'll be in the back and he goes
- 5:20to get like a a lamp. So it's not the actual, not.
- 5:22Even then, OK. Of the office.
- 5:24You wish you it was. It would be so much easier to
- 5:27follow Jay if it were like that. I Oh, just one more thing.
- 5:30This furniture store is like a bad boy furniture.
- 5:32OK, This is the discount furniture top shop.
- 5:35This isn't some place you go in and you you're looking at an
- 5:37armoire and someone's offering you some champagne.
- 5:39No, it's not like that at all. It's like everything is slashed.
- 5:43This is 50% off. That's 70% off.
- 5:45And it's in the back. That's what I would think I
- 5:47would go to. The there's nothing's in the
- 5:48back. It's in the basement.
- 5:50It's in the. Basement in the basement.
- 5:51He flips through the wall in the basement.
- 5:53Yeah. And, and and he just discovers
- 5:56this whole area and kind of is able to report that to he.
- 5:59He talks to someone, I guess his therapist basically tries to
- 6:01convince her it's a real thing. You know, she doesn't really
- 6:03believe my guest type thing. And it kind of the movie
- 6:05develops from there. It's a, it's a cool, very
- 6:07interesting kind of psychological thing with
- 6:10somebody horror stuff that happens as well.
- 6:12So for sure, if you like that kind of stuff, it's it's
- 6:15definitely worth checking into for sure.
- 6:17Barry, what do you think? Cuz I want to make sure we get
- 6:19to our second movie as well. So I want to hear your take on
- 6:22back rooms. Yeah, I thought it was
- 6:24interesting. I, unlike Rob, I had no context
- 6:27for this at all, Jay, other than what Rob had told me.
- 6:29I wasn't familiar with this kid, I didn't know anything about it,
- 6:32so I just kind of went in naked and I was happy that I did.
- 6:36Air conditioner, wear clothing? Yeah, I asked them.
- 6:38It was freezing in there, man. Yeah, we we sat in the seas that
- 6:41were right below the air conditioning.
- 6:43So we were. Yeah, it was a frightened turtle
- 6:44up front, but then, OK, doesn't the nip.
- 6:46Sore out. And that's the point of.
- 6:48It Oh they were glad cutting glass, Jay.
- 6:50OK. So at some point now, did they
- 6:54go in the backroom? I'm a little confused about
- 6:56that. There was an actual like did
- 6:57they go put through a curtain or through?
- 6:59Was it like a closing door? I think I.
- 7:00Think you're thinking when you're thinking back rooms, I
- 7:02think you're thinking of the back room of a building.
- 7:04That's not what this is. What is it?
- 7:05The back? The back.
- 7:06Room of an old video rental place where they keep the
- 7:10pornos. You know, behind the curtain.
- 7:12You're big. You're big on the pornos today.
- 7:14Yeah. I'm fixated.
- 7:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, this, this is about
- 7:18literally disappearing through a wall and reappearing on the
- 7:23other side in a series of connected corridors and rooms
- 7:27that look like an empty office space or an office space that
- 7:30has firm in it. But the furniture could be stuck
- 7:32to the wall, it can be on an angle in the floor.
- 7:35It's all. A big pile in the middle of the
- 7:37room. Back rooms?
- 7:39Why didn't you say so now? I thought I did.
- 7:42Maybe I'm, I don't know. Let's.
- 7:46Guess I need to work on on my English.
- 7:48Yeah, this thing is this things a hit.
- 7:50Let's get a star rating for both of you, Rob.
- 7:53Star rating on Backrooms. I'm giving it, I'm giving it a
- 7:56I'm going 4 out of five. I really enjoyed it.
- 7:58I think there's a lot of potential for for this guy, for
- 8:00this young guy to make better movies.
- 8:02And it was a good movie, so. Yeah, Barry.
- 8:04I would agree. Four out of five, I enjoyed it.
- 8:07It was a little more thinking that I typically like to do in a
- 8:10movie because it by the end of it, I wasn't entirely sure what
- 8:13I saw. But what I did see was
- 8:15interesting and there was some genuine scares, including, I
- 8:18don't want to give it away, but there's this one sequence where
- 8:21you you get Vertigo in the theater.
- 8:24It's just really wild. But all the while that you're
- 8:26worried about falling over, you got something chasing you on top
- 8:30of that. So that was that, got the heart
- 8:32going. Yeah, that's frustrating.
- 8:34When that happens, it's a whole. Yeah.
- 8:35So it's terrible. It's terrible.
- 8:37OK, all right, back rooms, go see it.
- 8:40Probably have already. It's been out for a little
- 8:41while. Check it out.
- 8:42It's great. Let's do shot #2 and then we're
- 8:45going to move on to our double of our second movie of our
- 8:48double feature that I haven't seen.
- 8:49It's always rewarding for me. Yeah.
- 8:51All right, Rob, what have you got for shot #2 to start us off?
- 8:56Well, I'm going back to what I said was vodka, but it's really
- 8:59just water. I'm, I'm a, I'm a wimp when it
- 9:00comes to this stuff these days. So it's I'm just drinking water.
- 9:03All right, Attaboy, Barry. I'm doing the opposite of being
- 9:08a wimp today. I'm going pull in with the booze
- 9:10and so that the J or the yeah, Bushmills.
- 9:14I almost got it wrong. Bushmills 12 year.
- 9:16All right. And I've got the lemon squeezy,
- 9:19not lemon squeezy, the Kool-aid orange drink squeezy with ice.
- 9:22Here's to you guys. Chin, chin so watery.
- 9:27So the next movie we saw, Disclosure Day, the latest from
- 9:31newcomer Steven Spielberg. And I had said to Rob on the
- 9:34walk over, I had read somewhere that people were saying this is
- 9:37his best work ever. I said that to Rob.
- 9:40I didn't even get the full sentence.
- 9:41Out he goes, fellow Opie. It's not really his best work.
- 9:44He can't be. It's like he's been around too
- 9:46long. He's got a ton of great work.
- 9:48Yeah. This might be one of the ones
- 9:49that this might be. I don't really, you know what
- 9:52I'm going to wait for Rob to to to say.
- 9:54But where does this sit among his sci-fi movies?
- 9:57Well, that's because this is very different than any of the
- 9:59other stuff that he's done. But Rob, take it away.
- 10:02Yeah, it's kind of a mix of it has elements of ET in it.
- 10:05Remember, you know, sort of like the, the sort of like the the
- 10:08unknown FBI type people that are chasing the, the kids and all
- 10:12that stuff. It has that element in it.
- 10:14But you actually kind of dive a little bit more into that and
- 10:16who those guys might be. Yeah.
- 10:19As well as a. Bit of like.
- 10:21Sorry, encounters. Ed Snowden.
- 10:23There's like an Ed Snowden kind of character that does like a
- 10:26yeah, stealing a bunch of files. He wants to release them to the
- 10:29general public. And there's a couple different
- 10:31stories going on in this. Yeah, and it did.
- 10:33It definitely reminded me a bit of close Encounters as well with
- 10:35the sort of the objective of the movie and I, I probably don't
- 10:39want to give away too much. There is definitely stuff to
- 10:41spoil, especially as you get closer to the end, but it's
- 10:43basically a guy, the Snowden type character who is working
- 10:47for a company and he has all these secrets and the secrets
- 10:50are basically a complete absolute evidence and proof of,
- 10:54of alien life having been around for about 50-60 years on Earth.
- 10:58And, and he he has teamed up with someone else who has gone
- 11:02rogue and they are planning to release that information, hence
- 11:06disclosure day. And then other things happen.
- 11:08Emily Blunt's character comes in and she she's a reporter that
- 11:11works in San Francisco, like a weather reporter, and she kind
- 11:14of gets pulled into it without knowing it that she's going to.
- 11:18She kind of has AI. Don't really want to spoil it
- 11:20too much because it's such a new movie, but yeah, there's there's
- 11:23like a. Visitor, there's a visitor comes
- 11:27to to see her and then after that everything changes for her,
- 11:31including she suddenly is able to speak Russian.
- 11:33So that's one thing. It was kind of nice.
- 11:35Yeah, she's able to dive into your history.
- 11:37She knows exactly, like she can kind of look at you and
- 11:40understand who you are and she'll look like, say, look, you
- 11:42know, you might want to, you know, maybe tonight's the night
- 11:44you put out the garbage because you haven't done it in a while.
- 11:46And you're, you know, you're, you're whatever your, your, your
- 11:49husband or your whatever is not going to be happy about that.
- 11:51So just she's able to like tune into the moment with a person
- 11:55and kind of like pull them apart.
- 11:57Not well, maybe 1. Of her skills.
- 11:59Probably in Russia, OK. Maybe in Russian, yeah.
- 12:02Yeah, if she was in Russia. Is this, if you can say, is this
- 12:05like a we've discovered aliens have crashed here, or is it like
- 12:09we've discovered aliens are living among us?
- 12:11Here, no, it's a, it's a crash thing.
- 12:13It's, it's Roswell. It's, they're not, it's all the,
- 12:16it's all the history we kind of know and we've seen, but they've
- 12:19added hooks into what if that was all real kind of thing.
- 12:23Yeah, what if it? Including like some pretty good
- 12:25looking video that looks like it was shot back in the day of
- 12:29like, you know, the Roswell crash and them working to
- 12:32retrieve the alien occupants. And you gotta get to see that.
- 12:36And it's it's good. But then also like towards the
- 12:38end of it, you're seeing some images that are pretty
- 12:40disturbing too. Like Rob, I think you've got a
- 12:42little, you got him a. Bit misty there yeah.
- 12:44Because it was it was it was kind of beautifully handled
- 12:46yeah, it was yeah. I mean, when you think about
- 12:49the, you know, when you know the context of why you're seeing
- 12:52this stuff and you realize that I see, I don't want to give it
- 12:55away. But when you realize the
- 12:56context, it ends up being kind of sad in a way.
- 13:00It's not, it's not a good thing. It's kind of a, it's a bad
- 13:02thing. What, what we've kind of done,
- 13:04right? So in in this fictional version
- 13:06of Earth. Right.
- 13:08Yeah, Or maybe full aliens. Who knows.
- 13:10I don't want to guess. You want to like ET like little
- 13:13ETS. Maybe not.
- 13:15Quite full aliens, but. Yeah, maybe not quite there, but
- 13:18like, maybe like close encounters, aliens or yeah.
- 13:21They're not. They're not trying to
- 13:22annihilate. It's not like Mars Attacks where
- 13:25they are clearly just trying to vaporize all in human life.
- 13:28It's not like that. There is another element too.
- 13:30That's kind of cool. Yeah.
- 13:31There's another element too, where there's like some psychic
- 13:34phenomenon where one of the characters that is trying to
- 13:37chase down this rogue as well as the Ed Stone character, because
- 13:41you know, obviously there's a faction that doesn't want this
- 13:43information ever to see the light of day.
- 13:45So this guy is has the ability then to just drop in.
- 13:48They call it drop it. Is it dropping in or dive in,
- 13:51dive in on somebody's mind. And so he's able to kind of
- 13:54like, appear in people's minds and, like, try to manipulate
- 13:58even their, like, hand gestures. And all.
- 14:00Kinds of stuff. Stuff.
- 14:01He has to. He has to but.
- 14:02It's very draining for him. And he has to have an alien
- 14:05object in in his hand to do that.
- 14:07And those those objects play a larger part in the grand story
- 14:11once you get there, but you don't know what they are
- 14:13originally. You just know that it's an alien
- 14:14object and he it's who who played that guy again, It was
- 14:17the the. Yeah, it's Colin 1st, and there
- 14:20were a couple times, it was more than once that Rob wanted to see
- 14:22the guy's head get exploded. You're like explode that guy's
- 14:25head because he's just not a good guy at all.
- 14:28He's like an absolute scumbag. And you want this guy to have
- 14:32his head blown out? Yeah.
- 14:33Does he? I don't know.
- 14:34You gotta go see the movie. Yeah, you gotta see the movie.
- 14:35Was this movie based on a book or is it an original story by
- 14:39Steven Spielberg or somebody that?
- 14:40Original David Keppen and and Spielberg, Yeah.
- 14:45OK, very cool. And they've done a lot of great.
- 14:47They've done a lot of great movies together.
- 14:48So you know, they've done some good scripts.
- 14:51Where would you put this Rob? On the And then I'll go to Barry
- 14:53for this and the kind of Barry was asking him in like how it
- 14:57ranks in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movies.
- 14:59I'll even expand that to just Steven Spielberg films.
- 15:01Where would you put this? Yeah, it's, it's not going to be
- 15:04up at the top. It's mid, mid, mid.
- 15:06Pack but not bottom. It's not one of the lower ones.
- 15:09Sometimes they trend down there. Definitely not.
- 15:11Bottom They get older. Barry, how about yourself?
- 15:14Well, in terms of the, you know, where does it sit in his whole
- 15:17catalog? I agree with Rob.
- 15:18It's definitely not the top. I don't know who wrote it's this
- 15:22is Spielberg's best work. I don't know.
- 15:24I mean that that person maybe has never seen a Spielberg
- 15:27movie. Maybe because it's the first
- 15:28one. So I don't know, I mean, it
- 15:30looks, it looks great. It looks like a Spielberg movie.
- 15:32It's definitely very incredibly competent.
- 15:35It looks amazing. Oh, and also John Williams came
- 15:38out of retirement to score that. And I, I noticed it that that's
- 15:41absolutely John Williams. I'm like, I didn't know he did.
- 15:43He did the score for this. So that that that was cool.
- 15:46So the score was great. Everything was like what you
- 15:49would expect a modern version of a Steven Spielberg flick.
- 15:52It just didn't seem to have the kind of depth that, you know,
- 15:55even close Encounters had or something like that where
- 15:57you're, you're on a journey. This is definitely a journey.
- 15:59This is like a chase movie kind of thing, but I just don't think
- 16:04it had quite. And the ending was maybe a
- 16:07little divisive. I I didn't mind it.
- 16:08I understand the message, but I'm not going to say what the
- 16:11message is. But there's a message at the end
- 16:12and it. It's an important message, but
- 16:14don't understand why people. Yes, that's exactly what
- 16:17happens. Yeah.
- 16:18It's a big sign they'll do this. Everyone, all the entire cast
- 16:21break, break from like the roles, and they just put up a
- 16:24thing and don't litter. And that's litter.
- 16:26Yeah, don't. Litter in its place.
- 16:28And hate, yeah, that kind of stuff.
- 16:31I researched, I recently saw Steven Spielberg directing.
- 16:35He directed the first ever episode of the regular Colombo
- 16:37series. So I own that on DVD and it was
- 16:40really well done. Really.
- 16:41You could see, you could see brilliances of Steven Spielberg
- 16:43as he was very young and he had cut his break, but you could
- 16:46just see some cool stuff. So yeah, he did the. 1st but I
- 16:48wonder if that was I wonder if it was after or before Before
- 16:52Jaws. No duel.
- 16:53Duel is the duel was his first movie which was ATV movie.
- 16:57It was about a car that just a truck that just relentlessly
- 16:59chases. Well, this was 1969.
- 17:01I think he. Did this Columbia?
- 17:03OK, right. This was This was before
- 17:04dueling. OK, it's.
- 17:06Probably why he got duel. It's probably.
- 17:08Yeah, and then he did Jaws, just what he was after that.
- 17:11OK, let's get star rating on this one.
- 17:13Let's start with you, Barry. I want to hear your star rating
- 17:16on this. Yeah, I enjoyed it at the
- 17:17runtime, though was a little bloated at 2:30.
- 17:22Yeah. So I feel like it maybe could
- 17:24have done a little bit more time in the editing room, maybe 10
- 17:27minutes. I don't know.
- 17:28I don't know. And I can't really off the top
- 17:30of my head tell you where those trimmings should have taken
- 17:32place because I'm not an editor. But what I can tell you is it
- 17:36probably as an audience member, it could have been a little
- 17:38tighter perhaps, but you know, whatever, 33.5 out of five, it's
- 17:43worth looking at. It's it's not a bad movie.
- 17:45And like Rob said, it is beautifully shot.
- 17:47It does have some humor as well that's in there.
- 17:49Wyatt Russell Kurt Russell, His son is in it, so he provides a
- 17:53little of a Comic Relief. Nice.
- 17:56You know, and not all the jokes land, but it's but none like
- 18:00Spielberg isn't known for that. Like he will put humor in a
- 18:03movie, but not everything is going to be a bullseye.
- 18:05Yeah, so. Well, I would say the they could
- 18:09have just edited out the don't litter part at the end.
- 18:11That would have been a good solid because that was that was
- 18:1310 minutes of the movie. That was insane.
- 18:15Yeah. It was a bit much.
- 18:16Probably just get rid of that and I'm going to go with 3.5 as
- 18:20well. That's exactly what I thought
- 18:21about 70%. It was, you know, above average
- 18:24film, a good Spielberg film, but not as best by any stretch.
- 18:28It's worth watching. I mean, it's worth seeing and I
- 18:32think there's a good message in it.
- 18:33Whether or not it pertains to anything to do with today's
- 18:36reality is a whole different ball game and a whole different
- 18:38story. So.
- 18:38OK I love it when you 2 sync up on both movies.
- 18:42So backroom. This is a rarity.
- 18:44I got to say, this is pretty rare.
- 18:46Yeah, exactly. The back rooms, plural and
- 18:50disclosure Day. Check them out if you haven't
- 18:53heard of them. I don't know what planet you're
- 18:54living on, but check them out. Rob, always a pleasure to see
- 18:58you. You're going to be back here in
