Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch, to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other. The backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:43Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're talking about this week's full episode subject the Replacements.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We're rewinding with the Guns and Roses Parts one and two,
- 0:54Speaker 1: stories from our archive, previewing our new upcoming episode on
- 0:58Speaker 1: Nikki six, and we get into your voicemail, text, dms
- 1:00Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of rosie. Disgraceland is
- 1:04Speaker 1: for the obsessed, the overlook, the outsiders who know that
- 1:07Speaker 1: the best stories are the ones that got buried. If
- 1:10Speaker 1: that's you, then you belong right here in the after party.
- 1:12Speaker 1: All right, this goes, Let's get into it. When I
- 1:26Speaker 1: first heard The Replacements in high school, it was what
- 1:29Speaker 1: older kids listened to, and by older kids, I mean
- 1:32Speaker 1: kids who seem both smart and dangerous, kids from my
- 1:36Speaker 1: town who went to college but still had cool vintage
- 1:39Speaker 1: cars and hot girlfriends. But Molly ringwaldhat not Cindy Crawford hot.
- 1:43Speaker 1: The point is what these Replacements listening dudes had was
- 1:47Speaker 1: different from what my punk rock listening friends had. It
- 1:50Speaker 1: seemed more adult and fun, and like I said, somehow smart,
- 1:55Speaker 1: too smarter than the Misfits and suicidal tendencies. Anyway, despite
- 1:59Speaker 1: Gary and Boner, so I gravitated toward these kids, and
- 2:03Speaker 1: of course toward the Replacements. Now, given how fucked up
- 2:07Speaker 1: the Replacements were and how good their songs were and
- 2:10Speaker 1: what the dudes who were listening to the Replacements were reaping,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I thought, I fucking love this band, and I thought
- 2:16Speaker 1: I can do this, and of course I couldn't, not
- 2:20Speaker 1: with that level of brilliance. Turns out it's really hard
- 2:23Speaker 1: to be wasted all the time and brilliant. Just ask
- 2:26Speaker 1: Bob Stinson. Now, the Replacements were mythic before they even
- 2:31Speaker 1: got big, and maybe that was the problem because in
- 2:35Speaker 1: living up to that myth, they paid a very very
- 2:38Speaker 1: very steep price. We' of course detailed that reckoning in
- 2:42Speaker 1: our new episode this week on the Replacements, the greatest
- 2:44Speaker 1: band that Never was. They never reached the rock and
- 2:48Speaker 1: roll heights they were promised, and that their great songs
- 2:51Speaker 1: promised us. And some say they should have been, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: akin to what Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were, And
- 2:57Speaker 1: I don't believe that. I think the Plents should have
- 3:01Speaker 1: been the Rolling Stones. The songs were that good, and
- 3:04Speaker 1: so were the albums. And you know, here's where where
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Replacements had Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers beat. The
- 3:11Speaker 1: individual members of the Mats had more charisma than the Heartbreakers,
- 3:16Speaker 1: just like the Rolling Stones. And maybe that's why Tom
- 3:19Speaker 1: Petty had the Replacements thrown off tour with him, but
- 3:21Speaker 1: probably not. Never mind any of that. It doesn't matter,
- 3:26Speaker 1: some of you will say, and I kind of agree
- 3:28Speaker 1: with you. Who cares? The Replacements made great music, mainstream
- 3:33Speaker 1: rock and roll stardom doesn't matter. And this is true.
- 3:38Speaker 1: But there's a weird sort of generational representation that shines
- 3:42Speaker 1: on the fans of a very small handful of bands.
- 3:45Speaker 1: You're Rolling Stones, Nirvana, et cetera. Okay, those precious few
- 3:51Speaker 1: bands who completely embody everything there is to say about
- 3:55Speaker 1: a generation. The Replacements had that level of rock stardom
- 3:59Speaker 1: waiting for them, and they fucked themselves out of it.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And yes, it's beyond cool to have seen the Replacements
- 4:05Speaker 1: at the rat and Kenmore Square back in nineteen eighty four.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But wouldn't it be cooler to be telling your kid
- 4:10Speaker 1: that this summer at Gillette Stadium while watching the Replacements
- 4:13Speaker 1: storm through decades of hits that now speak to generations.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't know, Maybe, maybe not. I like to think
- 4:21Speaker 1: so anyway, not everything needs to be gate kept. We
- 4:24Speaker 1: have plenty of Smiths and minute Men and Sonics and
- 4:28Speaker 1: Joy Divisions, so many bands that were great but never
- 4:31Speaker 1: cemented their greatness across generations at scale or whatever, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: feel like the Replacements could have been truly iconic. I
- 4:40Speaker 1: had Skyway on the stereo yesterday while driving to the
- 4:42Speaker 1: basketball court with my seven year old son, and he
- 4:45Speaker 1: asked me to play a Fleetwood Max everywhere. I wonder
- 4:49Speaker 1: what Paul Westerburg thinks of that. I don't know, but
- 4:52Speaker 1: I bet somehow he gets it. Anyway, speaking of icons Oasis,
- 4:58Speaker 1: the reunion shows are happening. Were any of you there?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Any of you at all? Last weekend at the gig
- 5:03Speaker 1: UK listeners. I know you're out there. You're the third
- 5:06Speaker 1: biggest country for disgrace Sland listeners. Someone out there is
- 5:09Speaker 1: listening to this. Who was at that show? And if
- 5:10Speaker 1: it was you, you are, as they say across the Pond,
- 5:13Speaker 1: a fucking legend. So call me and give me the review.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six sixty three eight
- 5:18Speaker 1: Sabbath just played as well last weekend, their last show
- 5:21Speaker 1: the day after Oasis. I saw some of the footage online.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Looks incredible. Maybe you were there instead of Oasis, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: if you were, you know how to get in touch
- 5:27Speaker 1: as well. I want your review too, and I wanted
- 5:29Speaker 1: to know if seeing Oasis or Black Sabbath made you
- 5:32Speaker 1: feel like the dirty rock and roll animals you were
- 5:35Speaker 1: back in high school. These are the important questions that
- 5:37Speaker 1: we need to answer. Disc goes, so hit me up.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Seawan Colmes still in jail, and boy did I blow
- 5:42Speaker 1: that one. Last week. I was convinced the judge was
- 5:46Speaker 1: going to let him skate, but looks like he's in
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Huskau until sentencing on October third. I still don't
- 5:51Speaker 1: think he's going to do serious time. It's a chance
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm not saying this is going to happen, but there's
- 5:56Speaker 1: a chance he could just get time served and just
- 5:59Speaker 1: walk in. OK, Tame, we shall see. I finished writing
- 6:02Speaker 1: my Brian Wilson episode on Friday, actually on Saturday. I
- 6:08Speaker 1: can't tell if it's good or not. Might have been
- 6:10Speaker 1: the hardest episode I've ever written. I'll tell you more
- 6:13Speaker 1: about it in a couple of weeks when it's released.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm reading about Jimmy Buffett, and man, oh man, was
- 6:18Speaker 1: this dude not the droid I was looking for. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: don't think I've ever been more interested in an artist
- 6:23Speaker 1: whose music I just don't like. That said, those first
- 6:30Speaker 1: three records are starting to get their hooks into me.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And if you have partial punk rock indie snow blood
- 6:35Speaker 1: running through your veins like I do, I promise you
- 6:37Speaker 1: you're going to love the Jimmy Buffett story that I'm
- 6:40Speaker 1: going to tell you. Don't believe me, just wait. This
- 6:42Speaker 1: story is not what you think it is so much more.
- 6:44Speaker 1: What else is going on? My favorite character in the
- 6:46Speaker 1: Chris Whitker book that I'm reading that I've been telling
- 6:48Speaker 1: you guys about, he just died, and honestly, I feel
- 6:50Speaker 1: like I need to find a way to process my
- 6:52Speaker 1: grief here. Maybe a mock cremation, a pirate's funeral, perhaps,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I don't know. It bummed me the fuck out, man.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You ever have that happen to you. You're reading your
- 6:59Speaker 1: book and you're just no, don't do wait, what are
- 7:01Speaker 1: you doing?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Man?
- 7:03Speaker 1: And then it happens and you're like, shit, Now, I
- 7:04Speaker 1: get the entire third act to go, and the dude's
- 7:08Speaker 1: just not there. Man, He's gone. Okay, there's no bringing
- 7:11Speaker 1: them back either. It's not that type of book. Whitaker's book.
- 7:15Speaker 1: The one I'm reading is called We Begin at the End.
- 7:18Speaker 1: His new book, which I can't recall the name of
- 7:21Speaker 1: at the moment, is number three on the Times bestseller list,
- 7:25Speaker 1: so I could just read that next. But I've got
- 7:28Speaker 1: Tom mcguine's Nobody's Angel queued up next to pair with
- 7:32Speaker 1: my upcoming trip to Montana at the end of the month.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Hopefully that book will come with less fictional grief. We
- 7:38Speaker 1: shall see. I've got Turnstyle, the new Turnstyle record, on
- 7:42Speaker 1: my turntable, and no matter what I do, I can't
- 7:45Speaker 1: get it off. I can't stop listening to this record.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's never enough listening to the Turnstyle record see what
- 7:52Speaker 1: I did there. I'll have more on Turnstyle in the
- 7:54Speaker 1: exclusive section of this bonus episode, as well as a
- 7:57Speaker 1: little bit more on my time on tour with Tommy
- 8:00Speaker 1: Stinson from the Replacements that'll come up later in the show.
- 8:04Speaker 1: After that, next up in your feed after this episode,
- 8:07Speaker 1: we're revisiting Guns N' Roses Parts one and two, tracing
- 8:10Speaker 1: their rise of Corus Slash and Izzi's eighties and nineties
- 8:13Speaker 1: awesomeness and the weird, strange, juvenile delinquent id of Axel Rose.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And then next week quick refresher on our og Motley
- 8:21Speaker 1: Crue episode on Monday to set the groundwork for our
- 8:25Speaker 1: part two crew episode on Nicky six. Entirely, Yes, the
- 8:30Speaker 1: Nicky sixth story is so out of control the two
- 8:33Speaker 1: episodes were needed to get into all of it. Thanks
- 8:35Speaker 1: to Disco Chris on It for pushing me on this one.
- 8:37Speaker 1: When you're listening to that Nicki six episode, guys, be
- 8:40Speaker 1: thinking about this question. Is Motley Crue the greatest hair
- 8:42Speaker 1: metal band of all time? Which glam band makes you
- 8:45Speaker 1: want to drive faster, drink more, stay out later, never
- 8:47Speaker 1: leave that kegger out in the woods. I want to
- 8:49Speaker 1: know and if you can't stand hair metal, which hair
- 8:52Speaker 1: band do you kind of sort of maybe think is
- 8:54Speaker 1: all right? You might not like poison, but you can
- 8:56Speaker 1: tolerate Hanoi rocks. I don't know you tell me caller
- 8:59Speaker 1: Tech six one nine oh six six six three eight
- 9:02Speaker 1: will feature your picks in the next after party. All right,
- 9:05Speaker 1: that's everything that's in my head. Uh, I gotta take
- 9:07Speaker 1: a break. I need some tea. I need to drink
- 9:09Speaker 1: a little water. I'll be back in a minute with
- 9:11Speaker 1: your voicemails in your texts. All right, we are back.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Apple podcast listeners. Remember, make sure you got auto downloads
- 9:37Speaker 1: turned on, so the disgrace and finds you every morning.
- 9:39Speaker 1: You don't have to go looking forward. So it's gonna
- 9:40Speaker 1: be right there in your RSS feed waiting for you
- 9:43Speaker 1: every episode. All right. Six one seven nine oh six
- 9:46Speaker 1: six six three eight. You know where I'm at ham
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the phone booth, that's one across the hall. I'm
- 9:49Speaker 1: hanging on the telephone. You want to send me a
- 9:50Speaker 1: voicemail or a text, get at me six one seven
- 9:54Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. The question of
- 9:57Speaker 1: the week we're answering this week has to do with
- 9:59Speaker 1: the rep I asked you guys, are they I forget
- 10:03Speaker 1: how I freezed it, but it was basically like you
- 10:05Speaker 1: know what band. Besides, the replacements should have been huge
- 10:08Speaker 1: but was not. This call comes from the two seven zero.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, two seven oh, Todd. I love this question.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I hope I'm not too late for it. I'm going
- 10:22Speaker 3: to go with the replacements, which is the subject matter
- 10:25Speaker 3: of your show. Also, honorable mentions will go to the
- 10:31Speaker 3: New York Dolls, who you have spoke about before, so
- 10:35Speaker 3: influential kiss Errol Smith. Most of the hair metal bands
- 10:40Speaker 3: owe something to the New York Dolls, as we all know,
- 10:42Speaker 3: and they just never really sold the many albums. I'm
- 10:45Speaker 3: biased because I love them. Honorable mentions will go to
- 10:49Speaker 3: Screaming Trees front of by Mark Lanagan, in my opinion,
- 10:53Speaker 3: one of the best bands from Seattle, if not the best.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Loved the questions, love the content.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Thank you, Jake, all right, Todd, thanks man. I appreciate
- 11:02Speaker 1: you well digging into the theme here. Replacements of course,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and I like your New York Dolls suggestion as well.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I also like the Mark Lanigan Screaming Trees piece of
- 11:10Speaker 1: it all because we've got a landag An episode coming up.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I think next, No, Nikki six is next, and then
- 11:16Speaker 1: I think after that or two after that is our
- 11:18Speaker 1: Mark Lannigan story. So that's coming down the pike just
- 11:22Speaker 1: for you. See we did that for you specifically. No,
- 11:25Speaker 1: we didn't, but you know we did. Just check out
- 11:27Speaker 1: this voicemail from the seven eight one.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Hey, Jake Chris here in the seven eight one. I'm
- 11:32Speaker 2: an unapologetic Replacements fan, so I had the pleasure of
- 11:35Speaker 2: meeting Paul a couple of times. Such a great guy.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I think they were severely underrated and or appreciate it,
- 11:42Speaker 2: especially during their heyday. See what I did there. They
- 11:47Speaker 2: were in the middle of the synthpop and hair metal eighties.
- 11:51Speaker 2: There's a couple of bands though, that I think about
- 11:53Speaker 2: that really should have been bigger, are even marginally successful.
- 12:00Speaker 2: One band out of Boston was Berlin Airlift later morphed
- 12:03Speaker 2: into Berlin the movie. Maybe the greatest band I've ever
- 12:07Speaker 2: seen in my life in my opinion. Also two other
- 12:09Speaker 2: bands from Boston that are severely underrated or underappreciated. One
- 12:14Speaker 2: would be the Del Fuegos and the other the legendary Neighborhoods.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Of course, Dave Minihan ended up playing with Paul in
- 12:22Speaker 2: a solo band, and of course, later in the twenty
- 12:25Speaker 2: thirteen replaced in Store. Great episode, I Love the Maps,
- 12:30Speaker 2: Love what you Do, Rock and Roller, Buddy.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Chris, Rock and Roller, Thank you so much, great call.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah man, I felt like the replacements were good enough
- 12:39Speaker 1: to transcend all the hair metal bullshit that was going
- 12:42Speaker 1: on in the eighties. And you know, I don't know
- 12:44Speaker 1: if we'd agree or differ on this, but I think
- 12:46Speaker 1: the level of self sabotage from the band itself has
- 12:50Speaker 1: more to do with their lack of a breakthrough than
- 12:54Speaker 1: the actual scene that was going on at the time.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Love Love the Boston Rex here on band who should
- 13:00Speaker 1: have been bigger? Berlin Airlift? Was that Rick Berlin's band?
- 13:04Speaker 1: I never saw Berlin Airlift or Berlin the movie, but
- 13:07Speaker 1: I think that's Rick Bruin's band. And I've seen Rick
- 13:10Speaker 1: Brulin perform numerous times. I've even met him once or twice.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Super nice guy back when I was a doorman for
- 13:17Speaker 1: the Lizard Lounge way back in the day. What a
- 13:20Speaker 1: fun gig that was. Let's see what else what else
- 13:22Speaker 1: you got here? Let us talk about O. Yeah, course
- 13:23Speaker 1: you talked about delf Fuegos. I was just listening to
- 13:25Speaker 1: the Delfoegos the other day, listening to some eighties quote
- 13:29Speaker 1: unquote college rock had a mix going started by the
- 13:34Speaker 1: Long Riders, not from Boston, but a great band, and
- 13:37Speaker 1: it pulled up some great Del Fuego stuff. I was
- 13:40Speaker 1: listening to the Del Fuegos way way way, way, way, way,
- 13:42Speaker 1: way way way back in the day when they were
- 13:44Speaker 1: actually happening, when they were being played on FNX. I
- 13:47Speaker 1: think they're even being played on BCN at the time.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I remember the girl I was seeing back in sixth grade,
- 13:53Speaker 1: my girlfriend. She lives at the top of this hill,
- 13:55Speaker 1: like really high up in Clinton and from her house
- 13:58Speaker 1: you could actually get the wain X signal and it
- 14:02Speaker 1: was fantastic because you you listen to the Del Fuegos,
- 14:06Speaker 1: you get all kinds of stuff. It was great and
- 14:08Speaker 1: I still love him, still listen to him. Don't Run
- 14:11Speaker 1: Wild Baby, And of course Neighborhood's one of the most
- 14:14Speaker 1: incredible Boston bands of all time. And has there ever
- 14:17Speaker 1: been a more suitable replacement for Bob Stinson's energy and
- 14:21Speaker 1: mad cap rock and roll stage presence than one Sir
- 14:26Speaker 1: Dave Minihan of the Neighborhoods Guys a beast on stage.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Just incredible, great call, Chris, appreciate you real quick. From
- 14:34Speaker 1: the three one zero all the way out on the
- 14:36Speaker 1: West Coast.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Here we go, Jake, Jake does, Grace Land, Trace Marshall, Aloha.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Bands that should have been bigger. Question Love from Los Angeles,
- 14:51Speaker 2: the greatest of all time.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Arthurly and Love. It should be an episode. Good hand Aloha,
- 14:58Speaker 1: mister hand, I don't just I agree with you and
- 15:01Speaker 1: Arthur Lee and Love should absolutely be an episode. There's
- 15:04Speaker 1: some cool, juicy criminality going on there. I think there's
- 15:08Speaker 1: a connection between Arthur Lee or someone in love and
- 15:10Speaker 1: Bobby Bolsolet from the Manson family, And there's even more
- 15:15Speaker 1: juicy criminality going on stuff going on there with that story.
- 15:19Speaker 1: But yeah, I love love just everything. You know. This
- 15:22Speaker 1: happens to me. It's happened to me my whole life.
- 15:24Speaker 1: There's a mix going on. I'm somewhere, I'm in a
- 15:26Speaker 1: bar on whatever. I just got a playlist going at
- 15:29Speaker 1: home with stuff I haven't heard before, and something comes
- 15:31Speaker 1: on and I'm like, what the fuck is this? Great?
- 15:34Speaker 1: It is love that's happened to me so many times.
- 15:36Speaker 1: That's a type of band there, incredible band. Appreciate you
- 15:38Speaker 1: three one oh five seven four text and hey Jake,
- 15:41Speaker 1: this is Michael from Mishawaka, Indiana. If I had to
- 15:45Speaker 1: pick a band that should have been big, I'd pick
- 15:48Speaker 1: Mute Math. Thanks love the podcast. I've never heard of
- 15:52Speaker 1: Mute Math. Tell me where to start? Okay? Are they
- 15:56Speaker 1: like a math rock band? Are they one of those
- 15:58Speaker 1: bands that you know, the guy looks like he works
- 16:00Speaker 1: in it. He's got to strap on a guitar, get
- 16:03Speaker 1: on stage, and then the pitt's gonna get really fucking violent.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Is that the type of thing we're looking at here?
- 16:07Speaker 1: Page Hamilton Vibes. What are we looking at? Who's mute Math?
- 16:10Speaker 1: How have I not heard this before? Four to four
- 16:13Speaker 1: Rohl Rights saying, hey, Jake, love this week's episode on
- 16:15Speaker 1: the Replacements. As for an answer to this week's question,
- 16:17Speaker 1: I have to go with Michael Stanley. Michael, along with
- 16:20Speaker 1: his band, The Michael Stanley Band, are rock royalty in
- 16:22Speaker 1: Northeast Ohio, but outside of that, he's virtually unknown. Despite
- 16:27Speaker 1: having collaborated with Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren and others, did
- 16:30Speaker 1: a couple of top forty hits in the early eighties,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and Michael even had a cameo in the Drew Carey
- 16:34Speaker 1: Show episode where Drew is auditioning people for his band
- 16:37Speaker 1: but alas never send it to the levels of rock
- 16:39Speaker 1: stardom he deserved. Loved the show. Michael Stanley, It's like
- 16:42Speaker 1: on the edge of recognition for me, Like right there
- 16:46Speaker 1: at the recognition part in my brain, it's like it's
- 16:48Speaker 1: like dering, Like I can almost recall who Michael Stanley
- 16:53Speaker 1: and the Michael Stanley ban is, but then I think, wait,
- 16:55Speaker 1: was he in the Scorpions. No, of course he was
- 16:57Speaker 1: not in the Scorpions. I don't know where I Michael Stanley. Yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I guess hit me up. I don't know anything about
- 17:02Speaker 1: Michael Stanley. I like these recommendations of artists that I've
- 17:05Speaker 1: never heard of before. We can't recall. I should say,
- 17:08Speaker 1: appreciate you guys six one seven nine oh six six
- 17:11Speaker 1: six three eight on the voicemail in the text at
- 17:15Speaker 1: Disgrace Lamb pod. You want to hit me up on Instagram,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'll answer you over there. You want to hit me
- 17:18Speaker 1: up on TikTok, I'll hit you back there. Same is
- 17:20Speaker 1: on Facebook, saying with X at disgracelam pod. You can
- 17:23Speaker 1: also email me Disgrace lampod at gmail dot com. Jason
- 17:27Speaker 1: Hunt writes and nice, short and sweet, Jason love it
- 17:30Speaker 1: would love a deep dive on Andrew Wood and Mother Lovebone.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You know this is one of those I gotta do it.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I gotta do it sooner or later. People freaking love
- 17:39Speaker 1: this guy, love this band. This gets requested so much.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Maybe that'll be coming up next. I'm not sure. We're
- 17:45Speaker 1: trying to balance out our schedule right now. We shall see.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Thanks for the email, Jason. This email comes from Nicholas Phillips.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Nicholas says, hey there, it's Nicholas from seven to one
- 17:54Speaker 1: to three Houston. The band that should have been huge
- 17:56Speaker 1: to me was The Wildhearts, formed in nineteen eighty nine Newcastle.
- 18:00Speaker 1: From initially coming into the music scene, they have always
- 18:02Speaker 1: managed to just fall short of breaking through, usually by
- 18:05Speaker 1: their own volition, and have enough stories that they would
- 18:07Speaker 1: make a great subject to Disgrace Land. For over the years,
- 18:10Speaker 1: they've been lineup changes, drug and alcoholic problems, mental health issues,
- 18:13Speaker 1: which has led to such things as the band trashing
- 18:14Speaker 1: the offices of Kerrang magazine, having to drop out of
- 18:17Speaker 1: a US tour supporting ACDC Bassis, Danny McCormick having his
- 18:21Speaker 1: leg amputated in So I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at that,
- 18:23Speaker 1: just laughing at the laundry list of insanity here and
- 18:26Speaker 1: singer Ginger wild Heart spending time in a tie jail. Somehow,
- 18:30Speaker 1: the band is still going, having released their new album,
- 18:33Speaker 1: The Satanic Rights of the Wild Hearts to critical acclaim.
- 18:37Speaker 1: So if you fancy listening to a band that sounds
- 18:40Speaker 1: like the bastard child of a three way between Metallica,
- 18:42Speaker 1: the Beatles and Sex Pistols, you are in for a tree.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Keep up the good work and rock a rolla Nick, Nick,
- 18:48Speaker 1: thanks brother, never heard of the Wild Hearts. How's that possible?
- 18:51Speaker 1: I don't know. Can't catch it all, Nick, You know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: I do my best. I try. That's what I have
- 18:57Speaker 1: you guys for, you know, help fill in the gaps,
- 19:00Speaker 1: all right, guys, be like Nick, Be like the other callers,
- 19:06Speaker 1: the texters, the emailers. Okay, maybe you've been sitting on
- 19:10Speaker 1: the fence listening and go, I'm like shit, man, I
- 19:12Speaker 1: really enjoy when people call in and Jake engages with them,
- 19:16Speaker 1: But I never call myself or you might say, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: maybe say like God, damn, I really want to tell
- 19:21Speaker 1: the story the thing that happened to me that I
- 19:23Speaker 1: saw when I was at that show back in high
- 19:25Speaker 1: school or maybe years. Read a great book I don't know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: a great bio biography, autobiography and an artist, and there's
- 19:33Speaker 1: some stuff in there that I'm not aware of. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: you think, yeah, Jake's got a whole research team behind him,
- 19:38Speaker 1: he knows all this stuff. Why would I tell them
- 19:40Speaker 1: I don't know all this stuff. And yeah, we have
- 19:41Speaker 1: people who do research my dad, but you know, my
- 19:44Speaker 1: dad's busy, he's got shit going on. He doesn't even
- 19:46Speaker 1: listen to the podcast works for us, doesn't listen to
- 19:48Speaker 1: the podcast. What's that all about? I don't know. Someone
- 19:51Speaker 1: tell my dad to listen to the podcast anyhow. If
- 19:53Speaker 1: that's you, If you guys got shit to say, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: want you to know. I want to hear your voice.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Your voice helps prompt me to dig in, to try
- 20:01Speaker 1: and uncover the stories that get buried, the real stories.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Sometimes their stories like I said that I'm not even
- 20:08Speaker 1: aware are there. And sometimes there's stories with narratives that
- 20:11Speaker 1: are just too fucking convenient and not nearly as interesting
- 20:14Speaker 1: and entertaining as the truth. And you guys, as I
- 20:17Speaker 1: mentioned earlier in the B block when talking about Nikki
- 20:19Speaker 1: six and I mentioned Disco Chris on it, you guys
- 20:23Speaker 1: sometimes propel me to find these stories and to bring
- 20:27Speaker 1: them to the forefront. So six one seven nine oh
- 20:30Speaker 1: six sixty six three eight, don't sit on the fence.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Give us a call, send us a text, Email us
- 20:36Speaker 1: this Gray Sampod at gmail dot com. All right, let's
- 20:39Speaker 1: dive into our sixty second sports rant and under thirty seconds. Okay,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Brian BeOS complete game gem for the Red Sox this week.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Aside this, this is how uninteresting the Red Sox have
- 20:50Speaker 1: become for me this year, I'm about to talk about sailing, Okay,
- 20:57Speaker 1: sort of this week. Twenty three years ago, on July seventh,
- 21:00Speaker 1: two thousand and two, NBA player Bison Deal as you say,
- 21:04Speaker 1: his name, d E. L E vanished on a Tahitian
- 21:07Speaker 1: sailing trip. How the hell am I just learning about this? Now?
- 21:10Speaker 1: Deal dated Madonna for crap six. It's believed this guy,
- 21:14Speaker 1: this NBA player, was murdered at sea. This story is
- 21:18Speaker 1: nuts and it is way too much to get into
- 21:21Speaker 1: in under thirty seconds. But we will eventually get into
- 21:24Speaker 1: it in Sportsland. Moral of the story. If you're in
- 21:27Speaker 1: the NBA and dating Madonna, be careful out there on
- 21:29Speaker 1: the high season. Be more interesting if you're on the
- 21:32Speaker 1: Red Sox. All right, Matt, how to do? Did I
- 21:34Speaker 1: beat the buzzer?
- 21:35Speaker 3: Jake?
- 21:35Speaker 4: I'm going to give you a partial credit this week.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You came in under a minute, but not under thirty seconds.
- 21:42Speaker 4: You were about forty eight seconds there, So partial credit.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And yeah, Bison Delea, that is a crazy story. The
- 21:50Speaker 4: former Brian Williams. He was on the Chicago Bulls championship
- 21:56Speaker 4: team and I want to say ninety seven before each
- 22:00Speaker 4: changed his name to Bison Delea. And yeah, it's a
- 22:02Speaker 4: crazy story. We gotta get into that one for sure.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a very short break. I will be
- 22:07Speaker 1: back in a flash. All right, guys, we're back with
- 22:23Speaker 1: you here in the after party. You want to bring
- 22:25Speaker 1: your attention real quick to the Hollywood Land podcast, where
- 22:28Speaker 1: this week we are featuring Sharon Stone. That's right, the
- 22:32Speaker 1: one and only Sharon Stone, from casino to cannibalism and
- 22:36Speaker 1: back again. What you're asking yourself, what the hell is
- 22:40Speaker 1: that all about? Well, I'm telling you, man, you're just
- 22:42Speaker 1: gonna have to go listen. Subscribe to hollywood Land. Okay,
- 22:45Speaker 1: go to your RSS, go to whatever podcast player you use, Spotify, Apple,
- 22:49Speaker 1: whatever it is. Search for hollywood Land. Give that a follow.
- 22:53Speaker 1: True Crime lens on. This Sharon Stone story is intense,
- 22:56Speaker 1: of course, as I've been telling you guys for the
- 22:59Speaker 1: last few weeks, and I are deep into these episodes
- 23:02Speaker 1: in our hollywood Land Rap Party bonus episodes, those those
- 23:06Speaker 1: drop every Wednesday, where every week you get another bite
- 23:09Speaker 1: at getting your voicemails and text heard and played, and
- 23:13Speaker 1: you also get some movie related music rex from yours. Truly.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I got to say, recording that segment of the Rap
- 23:21Speaker 1: Party with Zeth is one of my favorite work things
- 23:27Speaker 1: to do every week now because I get to talk
- 23:31Speaker 1: about music just for almost freely. I know it's tied
- 23:36Speaker 1: to as sharance to whatever the actresses that were or
- 23:39Speaker 1: actor or director that we're featuring in hollywood Land that week,
- 23:42Speaker 1: but I find ways to hopskip and jump around and
- 23:45Speaker 1: get to what just I want to talk about musically,
- 23:48Speaker 1: and it's it's exercising this muscle that I don't have
- 23:52Speaker 1: anymore because I don't I don't go to parties and
- 23:54Speaker 1: just or go to the bar anymore and just sort
- 23:57Speaker 1: of like talk shit about music. I get, I guess
- 24:00Speaker 1: I do it in a much more formulaic and structured
- 24:03Speaker 1: way and disgrace Land. But the conversation with Zeth is
- 24:06Speaker 1: pretty free flowing around the recommendations, and I really look
- 24:09Speaker 1: forward to it. Matt is going to queue up a little.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I don't know if he'll play that part of the
- 24:14Speaker 1: rap party for you, but it's Matt, give a little taste.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop talking here.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Jake is always going to start with you. What music
- 24:21Speaker 5: recommendations are you bringing this week?
- 24:24Speaker 1: Share Your Love by Aretha Franklin. Just a fantastic song.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I think it's a Bobby Blue Bland song. I'm not
- 24:31Speaker 1: exactly sure, but google this song. Also early seventies, I believe,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and it's the perfect sort of like deep cut Aretha
- 24:42Speaker 1: that'll make you go like, how the fuck do I
- 24:45Speaker 1: not know this song? And it's so great she has.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Her greatness is so great that like the shit no
- 24:50Speaker 1: one pays attention to is greater than everything else. That's
- 24:53Speaker 1: the type of artist she is. She's amazing, and this
- 24:55Speaker 1: song is indicative of I think that exact point.
- 24:59Speaker 5: I don't know what that what record that's from, but
- 25:00Speaker 5: I discovered only recently her album let Me in Your Life,
- 25:04Speaker 5: which is that's the title of a Bill withersong, which
- 25:07Speaker 5: I think opens the record, and it's one it's sort
- 25:10Speaker 5: of outside that like quote unquote classic period, you know
- 25:13Speaker 5: of like respect and things and all that stuff. So
- 25:15Speaker 5: I always kind of ignored it. I was actually in
- 25:17Speaker 5: my local record store and the owner was playing it
- 25:19Speaker 5: and he was like, do you know this now? I
- 25:20Speaker 5: said no, and he was like, it's fucking great, and
- 25:22Speaker 5: so I bought it and it's amazing. But to your point,
- 25:25Speaker 5: she is so great that there's so much stuff hiding
- 25:28Speaker 5: in plain sight, right she did? It's crazy, all right.
- 25:32Speaker 1: So that's the wrap party part of the hollywood Land experience.
- 25:35Speaker 1: If you want more storytelling like we do here in Disgraceland,
- 25:38Speaker 1: get over to hollywood Land and subscribe. I was talking
- 25:41Speaker 1: about recommendations another music rack. I mentioned Turnstile earlier, and
- 25:47Speaker 1: in the beginning of this episode, I get the record
- 25:50Speaker 1: right up here on top of my desk. What else
- 25:53Speaker 1: I got here? Boem Machine, Tom Waits, DJ Shadow and
- 26:00Speaker 1: introducing great CD. These are CDs. By the way, Turnstylo
- 26:04Speaker 1: is the album is Vinyl. I'm going to be talking
- 26:07Speaker 1: about Turnstyle, the new record, the band, and the replacements
- 26:12Speaker 1: in the exclusive section of this episode coming up very shortly,
- 26:15Speaker 1: five bucks is going to get access to that the
- 26:17Speaker 1: all access portion of the after Party. It's where we
- 26:20Speaker 1: go a little deeper into the music and the music
- 26:22Speaker 1: myths that we're exploring. If you're near stalker level obsessed
- 26:26Speaker 1: with the artists that we're covering, if you're in need
- 26:29Speaker 1: of just to touch more nitty gritty around these stories,
- 26:32Speaker 1: if you want a deeper, sometimes darker, sometimes more personal
- 26:36Speaker 1: look into my head and how I see these stories
- 26:39Speaker 1: and how I build them in part sometimes with your help,
- 26:43Speaker 1: then go to Disgrace slampod dot com slash membership and
- 26:46Speaker 1: become a member today and get, like I said, the
- 26:48Speaker 1: exclusive portion of this episode, but also an extra full
- 26:52Speaker 1: episode per month. This month, we're featuring Alice Cooper and

- 26:58Speaker 1: five dollars a month is you get all all this content,
- 27:00Speaker 1: all these episodes add free today and get like I said,
- 27:04Speaker 1: the exclusive portion of this episode, but also an extra
- 27:08Speaker 1: full episode per month this month, we're featuring Alice Cooper

- 29:22Speaker 1: and Roller. On January twenty fifth, nineteen eighty six, the
