- 0:00Speaker 1: Carnal or spiritual. Throughout the Church of Christ, there is
- 0:05Speaker 1: a universal complaint of the feebleness of the Christian life,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and there are tens of thousands of souls longing to
- 0:12Speaker 1: know how to lead a better life. They find in
- 0:16Speaker 1: God's word promises of perfect peace, of a faith that
- 0:20Speaker 1: overcomes the world, of a joy that is unspeakable, of
- 0:24Speaker 1: a life of ever abiding communion with Christ hidden in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the hollow of God's hand and in the secret of
- 0:31Speaker 1: his pavilion. But alas thousands say, they know not how
- 0:36Speaker 1: to obtain it. Our meetings have just this one object,
- 0:41Speaker 1: to try and find out what are the possibilities of
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Christian life as God has revealed them in his word.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What are the hindrances that keep the majority of believers
- 0:50Speaker 1: out of that life? And what are the steps by
- 0:53Speaker 1: which to come in and take possession. I want to
- 0:57Speaker 1: begin by calling your attention to one what is always
- 1:00Speaker 1: important at the outset of these conferences. There are two
- 1:04Speaker 1: stages in the Christian life, the lower stage under the
- 1:08Speaker 1: power of the flesh, and the stage of the true
- 1:11Speaker 1: life in the power of the Spirit. Let me direct
- 1:15Speaker 1: your attention to a passage in First Corinthians chapter three,
- 1:19Speaker 1: verses one to four. There you have the first sortid Christians.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Some are spiritual and some a cardinal. And Paul says
- 1:28Speaker 1: he finds it of the utmost importance when he teaches
- 1:31Speaker 1: people to find out which of the two they are.
- 1:35Speaker 1: For if he gave what is food to the spiritual
- 1:37Speaker 1: to the carnal, it would not do them any good.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. You
- 1:49Speaker 1: are in Christ. You are real Christians, but alas you
- 1:53Speaker 1: are feeble Christians, just like infants. I have fed you
- 1:57Speaker 1: with milk and not with meat. There are some truths
- 2:00Speaker 1: that are just like milk, suitable for carnal Christians. Other
- 2:04Speaker 1: truths of God's word, deep spiritual truths, are for spiritual people.
- 2:10Speaker 1: For hitherto ye are not able to bear it. Neither
- 2:13Speaker 1: yet now are ye able, For ye are yet cardinal.
- 2:17Speaker 1: There you have the word carnal. Again, he says, plainly,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I want you to know that you are carnal believers,
- 2:25Speaker 1: but carnal believers. For here comes the proof. For whereas
- 2:29Speaker 1: there is among you envying and strife and divisions, are
- 2:32Speaker 1: ye not carnal and walk as men? He asks them
- 2:36Speaker 1: to answer the question. The word carnal comes from the
- 2:40Speaker 1: Latin word meaning flesh. If you do the works of
- 2:44Speaker 1: the flesh, this proves you are carnal. You walk as
- 2:47Speaker 1: men do, not as children of God do, who lead
- 2:50Speaker 1: a heavenly life. One says, I am of poor, and
- 2:53Speaker 1: another I am of a polus. Are ye not carnal?
- 2:58Speaker 1: For the fourth time you have the word carnal, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: for the second time the very pointed question for them
- 3:04Speaker 1: to answer. Tell me, are ye not carnal? By the
- 3:09Speaker 1: help of God, I shall speak to you upon these
- 3:12Speaker 1: two points. One what it is to be not spiritual
- 3:16Speaker 1: but carnal, and two the way from carnal to spiritual
- 3:22Speaker 1: one not spiritual but carnal. First, you are not spiritual
- 3:28Speaker 1: but carnal. The apostle says, I am desirous that every one,
- 3:32Speaker 1: as we go along, try himself and answer the question,
- 3:36Speaker 1: am I still carnal? Or am I, by the grace
- 3:38Speaker 1: of God spiritual? You know a doctor cannot do you
- 3:42Speaker 1: any good unless there is first a thorough diagnosis of
- 3:45Speaker 1: the case. He asks a number of questions, examines your
- 3:50Speaker 1: lungs and heart, finds out what is wrong and prescribes
- 3:53Speaker 1: the needful remedy. Until you find out what is wrong,
- 3:57Speaker 1: all the preaching of the most heavenly truths will do.
- 3:59Speaker 1: You know, good people must be brought to the realizing
- 4:03Speaker 1: of their carnal state. Ere the knowledge of the spiritual
- 4:06Speaker 1: life can be of any real benefit. O God, we
- 4:10Speaker 1: pray THEE reveal the mystery of the divine Truth, the
- 4:14Speaker 1: mystery of our own hearts and the carnal state, the
- 4:17Speaker 1: mystery of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual life. We
- 4:21Speaker 1: pray THEE now to come in and teach us. Give
- 4:25Speaker 1: us grace to say, Lord, search me, and if I
- 4:28Speaker 1: am carnal, oh, discover it to day and open up
- 4:31Speaker 1: to me the way into the spiritual life to live
- 4:34Speaker 1: as a spiritual man. God grant it. I think if
- 4:39Speaker 1: we look carefully at this passage, we shall find four
- 4:42Speaker 1: principal marks of the carnal state. First, it is a
- 4:46Speaker 1: state of protracted infancy. If I had here to day
- 4:50Speaker 1: a beautiful little child six months old, with its chubby
- 4:53Speaker 1: hands and feet, you would say, what a perfect child.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But if in three years time we found that the
- 4:59Speaker 1: child had not grown an inch, we should conclude that
- 5:02Speaker 1: something was the matter. If in another three years we
- 5:06Speaker 1: again found no growth, we should at once say there
- 5:10Speaker 1: is some terrible disease in that child that prevents its growth.
- 5:14Speaker 1: For where there is health, there is growth. That is
- 5:17Speaker 1: now what Paul says to the Corinthians. You are young Christians,
- 5:22Speaker 1: babes in christ. At first a Christian may be carnal,
- 5:26Speaker 1: for he is young and does not know what sin is.
- 5:29Speaker 1: But when a man has been a Christian for some time,
- 5:32Speaker 1: say after six months, a year, or three years, or
- 5:35Speaker 1: even ten years, and he does not grow, but remains
- 5:38Speaker 1: at the same place where he started from as a babe,
- 5:41Speaker 1: there is something the matter. There is some terrible disease.
- 5:45Speaker 1: That disease is the carnal mind. A Christian, when under
- 5:50Speaker 1: the power of the flesh, is in a state of
- 5:53Speaker 1: protracted infancy. You find it said in the Epistle to
- 5:56Speaker 1: the Hebrews that when after they had been so long
- 5:59Speaker 1: Christians they ought to be teachers helping others, they still
- 6:03Speaker 1: had to be fed with milk and were not able
- 6:06Speaker 1: to take the meat of the full grown man. This
- 6:09Speaker 1: is a state of protracted infancy, and it is the
- 6:12Speaker 1: state of the greater part of the Christian Church. How
- 6:16Speaker 1: many there are who will testify that the best time
- 6:19Speaker 1: was the first three months after conversion, and after that
- 6:23Speaker 1: they began to go back. They lost their joy, and
- 6:26Speaker 1: alas they have never had such a joy since then,
- 6:30Speaker 1: they have lost their first love. At that time they
- 6:34Speaker 1: used to conquer sin, but now it has the mastery.
- 6:38Speaker 1: What are the marks of a babe? One is the
- 6:41Speaker 1: babe cannot help himself. He has got to be helped
- 6:43Speaker 1: by others. The other he cannot help any one else.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Look at a baby in a house. You have got
- 6:51Speaker 1: to have mother or sister or nurse to take care
- 6:54Speaker 1: of him. A little baby always needs to be helped
- 6:57Speaker 1: and cared for. That is the way with many Christians.
- 7:01Speaker 1: They go to church, to prayer meetings, conferences, and are
- 7:05Speaker 1: ever seeking help from others. A little infant six months
- 7:09Speaker 1: old cannot help another. So there are Christians who cannot
- 7:13Speaker 1: really help others by their spiritual experience. Dear friends, let
- 7:18Speaker 1: us take this first mark of carnal state, test ourselves,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and if there be no healthy growth, let us bow
- 7:25Speaker 1: before God in shame. Second, the carnal state is a
- 7:31Speaker 1: state of sin and failure. No victory over sin. Paul,
- 7:36Speaker 1: writing to the Corinthians says, there is among you envying
- 7:40Speaker 1: and strife and divisions. That was the work of the flesh.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And this was the great reason that he had to
- 7:47Speaker 1: write to them the thirteenth chapter. Because of their quarreling.
- 7:51Speaker 1: One exalted Paul, another thought upon us was the more eloquent.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Another thought that Peter was older than either and better.
- 8:00Speaker 1: They were divided into religious parties. They were just squabbling
- 8:05Speaker 1: among themselves and got excited and had strifes, divisions, and envy.
- 8:10Speaker 1: In Galatians fifth chapter, you have envyings, strifes, et cetera,
- 8:15Speaker 1: as the works of the flesh. Do we not find
- 8:18Speaker 1: Christians who, in some respects have a good measure of
- 8:21Speaker 1: the grace of God, and yet have never really conquered
- 8:24Speaker 1: their temper? And so when another says a sharp thing
- 8:28Speaker 1: to them, they give a sharp reply. How many Christians
- 8:32Speaker 1: there are who have never learned to love as God
- 8:35Speaker 1: wants them to love, to love the unlovable. What is
- 8:39Speaker 1: this but that they are yet in the carnal state.
- 8:43Speaker 1: In them, the flesh has more power than the spirit. Friends,
- 8:47Speaker 1: Until we confess with shame, I am carnal, we will
- 8:51Speaker 1: not get into the life of the spiritual man, May
- 8:55Speaker 1: God search us and reveal our true state. Let us
- 8:59Speaker 1: say what is it that hinders the brightness of my life?
- 9:03Speaker 1: And you will get the answer from God. Two powers
- 9:06Speaker 1: are striving for mastery over you, Spirit and flesh. And
- 9:10Speaker 1: if the spirit is not ruling you, it is because
- 9:13Speaker 1: the flesh is ruling. This is why a man gives
- 9:17Speaker 1: way to pride self conceit worldliness, the lust of the eyes,
- 9:21Speaker 1: the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It is nothing but that he is still in the
- 9:27Speaker 1: carnal state. You know, a thing always gets its name
- 9:31Speaker 1: from what is its most prominent characteristic. A spiritual man
- 9:35Speaker 1: gets his name from the fact that the spirit triumphs
- 9:38Speaker 1: rules in his life. Even though there may still be
- 9:41Speaker 1: somewhat of the flesh. You cannot be in intercourse with
- 9:44Speaker 1: him without feeling that the spirit is leading, guiding, and controlling.
- 9:49Speaker 1: He is called spiritual because spirituality is his chief characteristic.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Paul write to the Corinthians, know ye not that ye
- 9:58Speaker 1: are the temple of the Holy Ghost that dwelleth in you.
- 10:02Speaker 1: There was somewhat of the spiritual in them, but they
- 10:05Speaker 1: had allowed the flesh to rule. The question comes to
- 10:08Speaker 1: us as a voice from heaven. Are ye not carnal?
- 10:13Speaker 1: That worldliness, that unfaithfulness, that neglect of God's word. It
- 10:18Speaker 1: is but the mark of one thing. You are carnal.
- 10:21Speaker 1: You have not given yourself over wholly to live the
- 10:24Speaker 1: spiritual life, the third mark of the carnal state. Along
- 10:30Speaker 1: with this carnal state there may be found a great
- 10:33Speaker 1: deal of spiritual gift. This is a very solemn thought.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know how. This is illustrated in the case of
- 10:40Speaker 1: the Corinthians. In the first chapter, Paul says, I thank
- 10:44Speaker 1: God that in everything ye are enriched by Him, in
- 10:47Speaker 1: all utterance and in all knowledge. There were spiritual gifts
- 10:51Speaker 1: among the Corinthians, gifts of prophecy, tongues, and many other
- 10:55Speaker 1: gifts most remarkable. Indeed, the gift of tongues was so
- 11:00Speaker 1: remarkable that Paul had to check and warn them to
- 11:02Speaker 1: be careful in their use of this gift. And yet
- 11:06Speaker 1: Paul writes the whole epistle with the one idea that
- 11:09Speaker 1: they were full of quarreling, pride, selfishness, et cetera. A
- 11:14Speaker 1: man may have a spiritual gift of preaching, or be
- 11:17Speaker 1: able to speak with power, and yet his private life
- 11:21Speaker 1: may be filled with pride, until the world says, we
- 11:24Speaker 1: don't believe in that man. Where is his humility. A
- 11:28Speaker 1: man may be an evangelist and lead hundreds to Christ,
- 11:32Speaker 1: and yet you will hear it said, how full of self?
- 11:35Speaker 1: The world says, I don't believe in that man. He
- 11:39Speaker 1: is too full of himself. Can it be that a
- 11:42Speaker 1: man who is a powerful man in the service of
- 11:44Speaker 1: God can be carnal? It can be. That is what
- 11:48Speaker 1: we want to make plain. A man may claim the
- 11:51Speaker 1: baptism of the Holy Spirit and get it as a
- 11:54Speaker 1: spirit of power and a spirit of zeal, and yet
- 11:58Speaker 1: that man may be terribly lacking the graces of a
- 12:01Speaker 1: holy life in humility, gentleness, tenderness before God, and man
- 12:07Speaker 1: in that meekness of the Lamb of God, which is
- 12:09Speaker 1: the chief grace of the Christian life. Look at the Corinthians.
- 12:13Speaker 1: They had spiritual gifts of prophecy, tongues, et cetera. Yet
- 12:17Speaker 1: they were unwilling to be subject one to the other.
- 12:20Speaker 1: There was strife as to who should speak first. Don't
- 12:25Speaker 1: think that the carnal state is the state of a
- 12:27Speaker 1: man in whom there is no good. A man may
- 12:30Speaker 1: be a preacher, evangelist, Sabbath school teacher, organizer. And yet,
- 12:35Speaker 1: alas God may say to that man, are you not carnal?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Does he not do as much good in the end. No,
- 12:43Speaker 1: he may help another to the Christian life, But the
- 12:46Speaker 1: Christian life he helps him to is such a mixed
- 12:48Speaker 1: one that it is feeble and does not stand. The
- 12:52Speaker 1: man whose inner life is under the rule of the spirit,
- 12:55Speaker 1: who is himself spiritual, will beget really spiritual children. He
- 13:00Speaker 1: will impart the life of God in power. Being able
- 13:04Speaker 1: to exercise spiritual gifts is no necessary proof that we
- 13:07Speaker 1: are not carnal. Fourthly, the carnal state brings an incapacity
- 13:13Speaker 1: for receiving spiritual truth. Just note how distinctly Paul says
- 13:18Speaker 1: this in writing to the Corinthians. In the first and
- 13:22Speaker 1: second chapters, he had been speaking about himself, Christ having
- 13:26Speaker 1: sent him to preach the Cross, not with human wisdom,
- 13:29Speaker 1: but in the power of the spirit. Then in the
- 13:32Speaker 1: third chapter he speaks about the church, and he turns
- 13:35Speaker 1: to them and says, I have received the mystery of God.
- 13:39Speaker 1: But I cannot tell you why not. Were the Corinthians
- 13:43Speaker 1: very stupid? No, they were great seekers after wisdom. They
- 13:47Speaker 1: prided themselves upon their knowledge. In the passage that I
- 13:51Speaker 1: read a short time ago, you will remember it said
- 13:54Speaker 1: that they were enriched in all knowledge. They were a cultured,
- 13:58Speaker 1: thoughtful people. The wisdom of the world was beautiful in
- 14:02Speaker 1: their eyes. And yet Paul said, all your wisdom will
- 14:06Speaker 1: not help you. If I were to speak spiritual truth,
- 14:10Speaker 1: you would take it into a carnal mind and intellect,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and it would be an injury to you. There is
- 14:16Speaker 1: a terrible mistake made right at this point. Very often,
- 14:20Speaker 1: Paul says, before I can write to them, I must
- 14:23Speaker 1: settle it in my mind that they are carnal people.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I must let them know that they are carnal and
- 14:28Speaker 1: bring them to the point of realizing that they are carnal.
- 14:32Speaker 1: How often, in the Church of Christ we preach to
- 14:35Speaker 1: people who are carnal deep spiritual truths. We clothe our
- 14:39Speaker 1: thoughts in beautiful words and illustrations. They say, what a
- 14:43Speaker 1: beautiful sermon, and practically it does them very little good.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Was not the sermon true? Was not the truth of
- 14:50Speaker 1: the Bible in it? Yes, But you preached spiritual truth
- 14:54Speaker 1: to carnal people. Friends, as long as the Christian is cardinal,
- 14:59Speaker 1: don't give him spiritual truth. You must bring him to
- 15:02Speaker 1: the point where he recognizes that he is carnal. The
- 15:06Speaker 1: carnal state is incapable of receiving spiritual truth. Two. From
- 15:13Speaker 1: carnal to spiritual. Paul did not want the Corinthians to
- 15:18Speaker 1: rest in the carnal state. No, he wanted them to
- 15:22Speaker 1: pass from carnal to spiritual. That is what we need too,
- 15:26Speaker 1: And the question comes, how are we to get from
- 15:29Speaker 1: the one to the other? Note four of the principal steps. First,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the believer must be convicted and brought to the confession
- 15:38Speaker 1: of his being in the carnal state. You know that
- 15:41Speaker 1: before a sinner can be converted, he must be convicted
- 15:44Speaker 1: of sin. He must know and confess his transgressions and
- 15:48Speaker 1: his lost estate. Just so, believers must see that they
- 15:53Speaker 1: are in a wrong state. Before they can get into
- 15:55Speaker 1: the spiritual life, they must be brought under conviction of
- 15:58Speaker 1: the shame and evil of this carnal state. There is
- 16:02Speaker 1: a great difference between conviction before conversion and this. Then,
- 16:08Speaker 1: that which principally occupied the mind was the thought I
- 16:11Speaker 1: am lost, I am under condemnation. The great idea was
- 16:15Speaker 1: the greatness of his transgressions and the desire to have
- 16:18Speaker 1: them pardoned. There were two things that he was not
- 16:21Speaker 1: convicted of, that his nature is utterly sinful, the other
- 16:26Speaker 1: that there are many hidden heart sins that he has
- 16:29Speaker 1: never known. This is the reason God brings a believer
- 16:33Speaker 1: into what might be termed a second conviction. It is
- 16:36Speaker 1: most needful that he be fully convicted of two things,
- 16:40Speaker 1: the utter impotence of the flesh to do any good,
- 16:43Speaker 1: the mighty power of the flesh to work evil. The
- 16:46Speaker 1: flesh is ruling him. He has the spirit of God
- 16:50Speaker 1: in him, And why did he yet do these things?
- 16:53Speaker 1: It is just the seventh of Romans. I am struggling
- 16:56Speaker 1: to do right, and I cannot friends. It is when
- 17:01Speaker 1: a man is brought under conviction of the utter impotence
- 17:03Speaker 1: of the flesh to do good, its helplessness, that he
- 17:07Speaker 1: will understand why he lost his temper, and why pride
- 17:10Speaker 1: comes up, and why he speaks wrong words. The flesh
- 17:14Speaker 1: takes him captive, the law of sin in him binds
- 17:17Speaker 1: him hand and foot. Then come those great hidden sins
- 17:21Speaker 1: that the world counts very little, which are seen to
- 17:24Speaker 1: be works of the flesh. The Holy Spirit convicts of
- 17:29Speaker 1: pride as being of the flesh. Unloving thoughts toward wife
- 17:33Speaker 1: or child or servant, self pleasing before God and man,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and so he needs an entire deliverance different from that
- 17:41Speaker 1: at conversion. Then he was delivered from the curse of sin.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Now he wants deliverance from the power of sin. Many
- 17:50Speaker 1: in the Church of Christ will have to cry, woe
- 17:53Speaker 1: is me, o wretched man, that I am in my flesh,
- 17:56Speaker 1: dwelleth no good thing. It is simply because the flesh
- 18:00Speaker 1: has power that you sin. You must find deliverance. And
- 18:04Speaker 1: there is no deliverance but by becoming an entire spiritual man.
- 18:10Speaker 1: The second step is that a man must be made
- 18:13Speaker 1: to see and believe that the spiritual life is a possibility.
- 18:17Speaker 1: A great many people will say in a creed that
- 18:19Speaker 1: they believe in the Holy Ghost. They have no doubt
- 18:23Speaker 1: about the existence of the Holy Ghost, and that he
- 18:25Speaker 1: is the third person of the blessed god Head. They
- 18:29Speaker 1: are Orthodox on all these points, but it is an
- 18:32Speaker 1: intellectual belief. They practically do not believe in what the
- 18:36Speaker 1: Holy Ghost can do in a believer. Every day of
- 18:39Speaker 1: his life, a man must be brought to see that
- 18:42Speaker 1: there is a spiritual life within his reach, that there
- 18:46Speaker 1: is a spiritual life which it is his duty to
- 18:48Speaker 1: live that there is a spiritual life he is in
- 18:51Speaker 1: need of, and may claim there is a life in
- 18:55Speaker 1: the spirit. Note such expressions as walk in the spirit,
- 18:59Speaker 1: live in the spirit, by the spirit, mortify the deeds
- 19:03Speaker 1: of the body. Just take the sixteen verses of the
- 19:07Speaker 1: eighth chapter of Romans in which the Holy Spirit is mentioned,
- 19:11Speaker 1: and a man must begin to see that God wants
- 19:13Speaker 1: him to be a spiritual man. He cannot bear to
- 19:17Speaker 1: have me carnal. God commands me to be spiritual, and
- 19:21Speaker 1: by the grace of God, just as certainly as Christ's
- 19:24Speaker 1: blood flowed for my sins, so Christ's spirit can lead
- 19:28Speaker 1: me down into the place of absolute helplessness, where He
- 19:32Speaker 1: will live in me in his divine power and renew
- 19:35Speaker 1: my whole nature into spiritual. Oh, take this step before
- 19:40Speaker 1: I go further, Reach out at once and begin in
- 19:43Speaker 1: a simple act of faith to obey God's call. Say o, God,
- 19:49Speaker 1: a spiritual life is possible. I can become a spiritual man.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Let us begin and believe that the God who gave
- 19:56Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit delights in nothing more than to give
- 19:59Speaker 1: the ho Holy Spirit in each of us to live
- 20:02Speaker 1: this life. When a man is convicted of a carnal
- 20:06Speaker 1: life and believed in the possibility of a spiritual life.
- 20:09Speaker 1: He comes to the third step, Are you willing to
- 20:13Speaker 1: give up everything to get the spiritual life? Then comes
- 20:17Speaker 1: the time of struggling. A great many delight to read
- 20:20Speaker 1: about the spiritual life. But that is not enough. I
- 20:24Speaker 1: must buy at what price? Give up all? You must
- 20:29Speaker 1: sell all to buy the pearl of great price. Come
- 20:33Speaker 1: with every sin and every folly, all temper everything you love,
- 20:38Speaker 1: your whole life, and place it in the possession of Christ.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Die to everything and be fully given up to God.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It is only in the vessel that is fully cleansed
- 20:49Speaker 1: that the Holy Spirit can do his work. Here in Chicago,
- 20:53Speaker 1: the question is often asked, will a thing pay? If
- 20:57Speaker 1: it will pay, men will undertake anything. If there is
- 21:00Speaker 1: one thing that will pay, it is to give up
- 21:03Speaker 1: everything for God, everything of the flesh, to become a

- 21:13Speaker 1: says I am willing, then he must come in faith
- 21:17Speaker 1: and claim it. It is just faith over again. It

- 22:00Speaker 1: he bring all who are yet in the carnal state
- 22:03Speaker 1: to full conviction and confession, And through then may He
- 22:07Speaker 1: bring many to the acceptancy of the full spiritual life
