- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everybody. My name is Justin Greenberg. This is the
- 0:04Speaker 1: film real right here on the Recess Bell Network. If
- 0:07Speaker 1: you don't know, I do a radio show, the Radio
- 0:09Speaker 1: Rumble Saturday's twelve to two, and I was talking on
- 0:13Speaker 1: my show about the movie Jaws, which I happened to
- 0:16Speaker 1: see in theaters this past weekend of this recording, and
- 0:19Speaker 1: I went on a little rant on just how amazing
- 0:22Speaker 1: this movie is. So let's give a listen to me
- 0:25Speaker 1: on the Radio Rumble talking about nineteen seventy five's iconic
- 0:29Speaker 1: film Jaws.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:35Speaker 1: This is the Radio Rumble right here on the Voice
- 0:39Speaker 1: of NASA Community College nine two point three WHPC.
- 0:44Speaker 2: My name is Justin Greenberg.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We are hearing the iconic score from one of the
- 0:50Speaker 1: greatest movies of all time, Jews. I mean Jaws, one
- 1:01Speaker 1: of my absolute favorites. In fact, I had the pleasure
- 1:06Speaker 1: of seeing it on the big big screen yesterday. It's
- 1:11Speaker 1: playing an Imax this weekend to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Who would have thought that they would be still playing
- 1:22Speaker 1: this movie and would still have sold out shows after
- 1:27Speaker 1: all these years. It was a gem packed audience watching
- 1:31Speaker 1: this movie. Kids were enjoying it. Elderly people were enjoying it.
- 1:37Speaker 1: They were cheering, they were laughing at the right moments.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It's such a great movie. And I listened to a
- 1:46Speaker 1: guy at the movie theater who worked there talk about
- 1:50Speaker 1: how he doesn't like Jaws. All right, so old fashion.
- 1:55Speaker 1: That guy's an idiot. That guy shouldn't actually work at
- 1:58Speaker 1: a movie theater. In my opinion, if you don't like Jaws,
- 2:04Speaker 1: you don't know anything about movies. Are the special effects
- 2:09Speaker 1: the greatest? No, But the movie is so much more
- 2:15Speaker 1: than that. You barely see the shark. First of all,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I actually think those special effects are really good. I
- 2:20Speaker 1: think they hold up for the most part. And the
- 2:24Speaker 1: beauty of the movie Jaws is the storytelling. It's fantastic.
- 2:30Speaker 1: The acting in this movie is top notch. You have
- 2:35Speaker 1: one of the best performances I think from the entire
- 2:39Speaker 1: decade of the seventies with Robert Shaw as Quint. You
- 2:43Speaker 1: have the great Richard Dreyfus as Hooper, and then you
- 2:48Speaker 1: have Roy Scheider as Brody. Those three guys, that dynamic
- 2:54Speaker 1: of the three of them, such three distinct personalities. You know,
- 2:57Speaker 1: the nerdy scientists. You have have the grizzled war veteran,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, pirate if you will, to hunt the shark.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And then the Chief Brody, who's new to this area
- 3:11Speaker 1: and he's just sort of trying to contain this chaos.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Come on, that's just fantastic storytelling. The cinematography is beautiful.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You have Steven Spielberg directed in this movie. You're gonna
- 3:26Speaker 1: have great visuals. I mean, think about the scene when
- 3:31Speaker 1: the little boy, the kittener boy, he gets eaten a
- 3:34Speaker 1: live by the shark and you have the amazing zoom
- 3:38Speaker 1: in of Sheriff Brody and you you just it's classic Spielberg.
- 3:44Speaker 1: He's used that sort of visual countless times where you
- 3:48Speaker 1: just have the zoom in and the shock on his face.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Or how about when you know Brody's right near the
- 3:55Speaker 1: edge of the boat and then he looks to the
- 3:58Speaker 1: side and then he looks back and then the shark
- 4:00Speaker 1: is right there, and then you get the famous line
- 4:03Speaker 1: We're gonna need a bigger boat. So it's got so
- 4:06Speaker 1: many iconic moments. Obviously, the music by John Williams, this
- 4:12Speaker 1: is really the introduction to majority of the world. I'd
- 4:15Speaker 1: say to John Williams would be the Jaws score and
- 4:20Speaker 1: I know he did a bunch of things before that,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but I think this is his first gigantic feature film score.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That is, you know, replayed for the last fifty years,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and it's so simple. It's so simple, but it's so effective.
- 4:36Speaker 1: The movie is so simple yet so effective. I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 1: the point of view shot of the shark underneath the
- 4:43Speaker 1: water and you just see the people's feet, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 1: kicking away, so simple and effective. So many other movies
- 4:50Speaker 1: have copied that formula. I don't know. I'm assuming there
- 4:54Speaker 1: was other movies like that before, with the point of
- 4:57Speaker 1: view sort of thing, but clearly, you know, something like
- 5:00Speaker 1: Friday the Thirteenth, that series made its living off of
- 5:03Speaker 1: that just sort of point of view. Whereas Jason with
- 5:07Speaker 1: the with Jaws, you know, did it first and it
- 5:13Speaker 1: was the biggest film of all time at the time
- 5:15Speaker 1: of its release. It really spawned the summer blockbuster. You
- 5:18Speaker 1: talk about people that grew up in that era, the
- 5:22Speaker 1: fear that they had of going into the water, I think.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And then back to the special effects, I think they're amazing.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I love practical effects. If this movie came out today
- 5:32Speaker 1: would be a cgi mess. Well, now it's Spielberg at
- 5:36Speaker 1: the helm. But you know, if it was done by
- 5:38Speaker 1: like a Michael Bay or something like that, you'd have
- 5:40Speaker 1: the shark like jumping in the air eating something. It
- 5:43Speaker 1: would It takes away the fact that the shark, the
- 5:46Speaker 1: animatronic shark, didn't work. It made the film better. Everyone
- 5:53Speaker 1: knows the story, right. If you're into movies, you know
- 5:57Speaker 1: that the shark using an animatron device underwater with the
- 6:02Speaker 1: technology of fifty plus years ago, you're not going to
- 6:06Speaker 1: have the ability to, you know, manipulate it and move
- 6:09Speaker 1: it and make it do everything you wanted to do.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So they had to be innovation. So you had the
- 6:15Speaker 1: point of view shot you had just seeing a fin
- 6:18Speaker 1: or maybe you get some live action footage of an
- 6:20Speaker 1: actual shark, and that edge to it less is more,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Less is more, not all the time, but when it's
- 6:31Speaker 1: done to perfection, like it isn't Jaws, less is more.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The less we see of the shark, the more suspenseful
- 6:39Speaker 1: it is. If you constantly see the shark, you sort
- 6:42Speaker 1: of get numb to it and it isn't as fearful.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But when you're on the edge of your seat and
- 6:46Speaker 1: you're waiting, when are we going to see this guy?
- 6:48Speaker 1: It's it's you know, very impactful, and on top of
- 6:53Speaker 1: all of this, it's not just uh, you know, a
- 6:59Speaker 1: horror movie in a sense, it's an action movie. And
- 7:02Speaker 1: then I'm gonna throw this out here. I think it's
- 7:05Speaker 1: a romance. I think Jaws is a romance in a
- 7:09Speaker 1: different sort of way. It is a romance, and that's
- 7:12Speaker 1: a term that the younger generation uses, but it really
- 7:15Speaker 1: is the camaraderie of the three gentlemen. First of all,
- 7:19Speaker 1: you have the hatred of Quint and Hooper, just you
- 7:24Speaker 1: know that dynamic they're like, there's definitely a sexual energy
- 7:28Speaker 1: there between those two. But the one scene that stands
- 7:33Speaker 1: out above and beyond in my opinion as to what
- 7:36Speaker 1: makes this a perfect movie, I actually think Jaws is
- 7:40Speaker 1: a perfect movie, which is very rare for me to say,
- 7:43Speaker 1: even the movies I really really like, I'll say, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's a nine point six, nine point seven. I rarely
- 7:49Speaker 1: would give a ten out of ten. In my opinion,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Jaws is a ten out of ten. So is Close Encounters,
- 7:55Speaker 1: so is et So's Jurassic Park, so is Shindler's List.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I mean, Spielberg to me is the greatest of all time.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But the one scene in Jaws that sticks out, and
- 8:05Speaker 1: it's just my absolute favorite. It's when the three of
- 8:09Speaker 1: those guys are on the boat and it's nighttime and
- 8:14Speaker 1: they're all drunk and they're telling their scar stories. You know,
- 8:20Speaker 1: they show, you know, a scar from an eel, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: then the other guy shows a scar from a shark attack,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and then you know, Brody doesn't really have a war story.
- 8:34Speaker 2: He's like afraid of the water.
- 8:36Speaker 1: He hasn't really done anything to warrant a scar, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: he just sort of looks at well, I believe it's
- 8:42Speaker 1: like an appendix scar, and then he just sort of
- 8:45Speaker 1: covers his shirt back up because he's like a shame
- 8:47Speaker 1: to even mention it. But then we talk about just
- 8:51Speaker 1: one of the best scenes ever keeps on getting better
- 8:54Speaker 1: because then Quint tells his war story and this scene,
- 9:00Speaker 1: holy crap. You want to talk about acting, this is it, man,
- 9:06Speaker 1: the delivery. You can't really you know, get actors today,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I think to have this believability. And I've read and
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure it's confirmed that Robert Shaw was very
- 9:19Speaker 1: drunk for a lot of this movie. You know, in
- 9:22Speaker 1: real life he was just you know, I was gonna say,
- 9:26Speaker 1: s faced if you will for the FCC regulations. So
- 9:33Speaker 1: he tells this story about a scar in his arm
- 9:35Speaker 1: that's no longer there, and it was a tattoo for
- 9:42Speaker 1: a ship that he was on because he was a
- 9:44Speaker 1: World War two veteran. And it's the USS Indianapolis. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm assuming this story is not factually accurate. Unless it is,
- 9:57Speaker 1: let me, let me do a quick Google search about
- 10:02Speaker 1: this USS Indianapolis sharks.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Oh, this actually.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Israel. That makes it even more frightening. So the sinking
- 10:12Speaker 1: of the USS Indianapolis in nineteen forty five resulted in
- 10:15Speaker 1: what's considered the worst shark attack in history.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Survivors reported that hundreds of sharks were drawn to the
- 10:24Speaker 1: wreckage and attacked the wounded and dead, and then turn
- 10:28Speaker 1: their attention to the living. Experts believe the sailors were
- 10:33Speaker 1: attacked by oceanic white tip sharks, which are aggressive towards humans.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It can grow up to eleven feet long. Tiger sharks
- 10:42Speaker 1: may have also been involved. We got to get the
- 10:44Speaker 1: music on when we're doing this. We got to make
- 10:46Speaker 1: this even more epic. Let's see. Most deaths were attributed
- 10:56Speaker 1: to exposure, salt poisoning, and dehydrat The dead were then
- 11:02Speaker 1: dragged away by sharks. The sharks were drawn in by
- 11:07Speaker 1: the explosions, sinking ship and blood in the water. They
- 11:12Speaker 1: could also sense the survivors' movements through their lateral line,
- 11:17Speaker 1: which detects pressure and movement changes from a distance. Survivors
- 11:23Speaker 1: found safety in groups, ideally in the center. Estimates range
- 11:28Speaker 1: from a few dozens to one hundred and fifty crew
- 11:32Speaker 1: members killed by sharks and Quinn tells the story. I
- 11:39Speaker 1: think the numbers are a little exaggerated in the movie.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And it's at that moment where you realize you're watching perfection.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You're watching everybody perfected their craft, from the music to
- 11:55Speaker 1: the cinematography, to the lighting, to the sound, to the
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, direction. Everything in that one scene is what
- 12:06Speaker 1: every film class should be studying.
- 12:09Speaker 2: In my opinion.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You have the highs and laughter of them drinking and
- 12:13Speaker 1: telling war stories and singing to the just horror of
- 12:19Speaker 1: the story of Quinn telling his time on the USS Indianapolis. So,
- 12:25Speaker 1: if you haven't seen Jaws, which I don't know anybody
- 12:28Speaker 1: who hasn't seen Jaws, and maybe if you're of a
- 12:31Speaker 1: younger generation and you.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Go, don't you know and I need CG.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I need explosions, shut up and just watch it because
- 12:41Speaker 1: you're going to be entranced by the story. Is it
- 12:45Speaker 1: a quick movie, you know? Is it a Does it
- 12:48Speaker 1: open with explosions? No? But in my opinion, it actually
- 12:51Speaker 1: is one of the better openings for any movie.
- 12:54Speaker 2: You have.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The young girl, Christy I believe her name, is getting
- 12:57Speaker 1: attacked by the shark, setting the mood. Two other things
- 13:01Speaker 1: I want to talk about with this movie, and it
- 13:04Speaker 1: is in theaters this weekend in Imax, so check out
- 13:07Speaker 1: Jaws if you haven't. I wish it was actually earlier
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the summer. It's weird that they have it at
- 13:11Speaker 1: the end of the summer. Two things I do want
- 13:14Speaker 1: to talk about. One is the opening scene where it's
- 13:20Speaker 1: just so iconic and parodied. And this is why movies
- 13:26Speaker 1: today that make a lot of money will never be
- 13:30Speaker 1: remembered like the movies of the past that made a
- 13:33Speaker 1: lot of money. First of all, with inflation, the ticket
- 13:36Speaker 1: sales for these giant movies that come out today are
- 13:39Speaker 1: nowhere close to what they were back in the day.
- 13:43Speaker 1: They just aren't. Every now and then there'll be a
- 13:46Speaker 1: movie that, yes, still would contend if it was released
- 13:49Speaker 1: in the seventies or eighties. But for the most part,
- 13:52Speaker 1: with inflation, these movies from the seventies, eighties, nineties, you know,
- 13:55Speaker 1: dating back to the thirties, forties, fifties, they were just
- 13:58Speaker 1: more widely seen. It's just the fact that the ticket
- 14:02Speaker 1: prices were so low that their box office receipts aren't
- 14:05Speaker 1: as high. I mean that makes sense, right with inflation,
- 14:09Speaker 1: something like Gone with the Wind would have a four
- 14:11Speaker 1: billion dollar box office. But just think about how iconic
- 14:16Speaker 1: this movie is. With the scenes that are parodied in
- 14:20Speaker 1: other things. You don't see that. Think about how popular
- 14:25Speaker 1: the movie Avatar is, right, what is the quote from
- 14:29Speaker 1: Avatar that people quote? There's nothing? There's nothing. What are
- 14:36Speaker 1: the scenes of Avatar that are remembered. I like Avatar.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I don't think it's a bad movie. I think it's awesome.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I love the sequel also, But iconicness. What is the
- 14:52Speaker 1: iconic moment of all these Marvel movies that have come out.
- 14:56Speaker 1: There's a few, you know, I Don't Feel so Good,
- 14:59Speaker 1: mister Stark and the snapping of the Thanos thing and
- 15:03Speaker 1: Iron Man, I Am iron Man. That's about it. There's
- 15:07Speaker 1: like thirty Marvel movies and there's what two iconic scenes
- 15:11Speaker 1: that people will be able to parody forty fifty years
- 15:15Speaker 1: from now and they will understand it. Jaws has those moments,
- 15:22Speaker 1: whether it's Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Family, Guy, Ace Ventra,
- 15:29Speaker 1: Caddy Shack, all these movies and shows they parody Jaws.
- 15:37Speaker 1: And there was whole movies that would be ripoffs of Jaws.
- 15:43Speaker 1: You know, The Orcas and The Deep Blue Sea, all
- 15:46Speaker 1: these you know, animal attack movies. Even something like Kujo
- 15:52Speaker 1: you could say, is like a land version of Jaws.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And the music just to yeh it dud did it do?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Dude it? There was a Hostess cupcake ad that parodied
- 16:08Speaker 1: the damn Jaws movie. So you tell me these movies
- 16:12Speaker 1: that come out today that make a ton of money.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You're super Mario Brothers movie, right, they made a billion dollars.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But what's this scene from that movie? There's nothing, So
- 16:25Speaker 1: go and watch Jaws in theaters. The other thing I
- 16:28Speaker 1: want to bring up, which I had a feeling it
- 16:31Speaker 1: was not rated r You know, we all know the story.
- 16:33Speaker 1: If you're into movies. Also, you know that there was
- 16:36Speaker 1: no such thing as a PG thirteen rating until the
- 16:40Speaker 1: mid nineteen eighties because of Spielberg. Actually he produced the
- 16:46Speaker 1: movie Gremlins, and then he directed Indiana Jones and the
- 16:49Speaker 1: Temple of Doom, and those movies were so violent, but
- 16:53Speaker 1: they weren't violent enough to be rated R. But clearly
- 16:56Speaker 1: they're not PG, so they created the PG thirteen rated
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know movie after that. But you're watching Jaws, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: I knew it wasn't rated R. But it's just so
- 17:06Speaker 1: funny to think that this movie's rated PG. You know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: there are Pixar movies that are rated PG. And then
- 17:12Speaker 1: you see Quint spoiler alert getting eaten in half, blood
- 17:17Speaker 1: being gushed out of his mouth.
- 17:19Speaker 2: You see naked.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Women swimming getting mauled by sharks, you see limbs, floating,
- 17:25Speaker 1: eyeballs popping out of you know, dead carcasses underneath the
- 17:29Speaker 1: ocean blue, and that has the same rating as like Coco.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Insane to think about, why haven't they done this now
- 17:40Speaker 1: that there is a PG thirteen rating, Why can't they
- 17:43Speaker 1: reevaluate some of these movies and give them proper ratings
- 17:47Speaker 1: in a twenty twenty five context. There's no reason why
- 17:51Speaker 1: Jaws in theaters today should still have a PG rating.
- 17:56Speaker 1: It's ridiculous, But I'm just gonna reiterate it one more time.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You gotta watch Jaws. It's a fan freakantastic. And then
- 18:07Speaker 1: there's so many other re releases coming out this year
- 18:09Speaker 1: that I saw celebrating anniversaries. Back to the Future is
- 18:13Speaker 1: getting an IMAX treatment in October, Apollo thirteen getting an
- 18:18Speaker 1: IMAX treatment for his thirtieth anniversary, and then also doing
- 18:23Speaker 1: a thirtieth anniversary is Toy Story That's gonna be in September.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Those are three amazing movies. I'm so pissed off. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: just watched Back to the Future. You know, a couple
- 18:35Speaker 1: of months ago. I would have liked to have not
- 18:38Speaker 1: seen it for a while and then see it on
- 18:42Speaker 1: the big screen in Imax. I mean, I'm still gonna
- 18:43Speaker 1: see it. It's Back to the Future in Imax for
- 18:45Speaker 1: the first time ever. Definitely seeing that. But go to
- 18:48Speaker 1: the movies this weekend and check out Jaws. Hey it's me.
- 18:53Speaker 1: It's the guy from the beginning of the show. If
- 18:56Speaker 1: you're listening to this and Jaws isn't playing in theaters,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but you know what you can do.
- 19:03Speaker 1: You can find it somewhere stream and get a Blu ray,
- 19:05Speaker 1: get a laser disc find it on VHS tape. I'm
- 19:09Speaker 1: sure you gotta find a copy of Jaws somewhere, so
- 19:12Speaker 1: watch it at home. Why don't you just do that?
- 19:15Speaker 1: All right, I'm gonna go now bye. You're still here,
- 19:20Speaker 1: Go go watch Jaws.
