- 2:06the entire week is protect your energy like
- 2:08it builds your future, because it really does.
- 2:11It's series five.
- 2:11It's show number 26.
- 2:12And this granular topic for this day, today,
- 2:17Wednesday, which is basically June 24, 2026, how
- 2:24to build internal discipline.
- 2:29Again, it's series five, show 26, episode five.
- 2:34And this revolves around self-control.
- 2:37And that's all over the concept of motivation.
- 2:41So let's get right in it, right, everyone?
- 2:44So welcome once again to Inspirations for Your
- 2:46Life.
- 2:46I am John C.
- 2:48Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:52podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, yes,
- 2:57and a passionate lifelong learner.
- 3:00And it is so great to be with
- 3:02everyone here.
- 3:04I am a graduate student, yes, at Montclair
- 3:06State University.
- 3:08And again, I'm so grateful now to be
- 3:09a published author, yes, yes, yes.
- 3:13So today, I'm focusing on something that determines
- 3:16everything else in your life.
- 3:18What is that?
- 3:20Discipline.
- 3:22Not external discipline, internal discipline.
- 3:26There's a difference.
- 3:28The kind that does not depend on motivation.
- 3:31Because you see, guys, motivation will come.
- 3:33It will fade.
- 3:35And that's an important thing to definitely understand.
- 3:39The kind that does not wait for feelings.
- 3:43The kind that executes regardless of conditions.
- 3:47I think that's a very important one to
- 3:51understand.
- 3:52The core message, motivation is temporary.
- 3:56Discipline is structural.
- 3:59Motivation rises and falls with emotion.
- 4:02And I think that catches a lot of
- 4:04people off guard.
- 4:06But it's important to understand that.
- 4:09Discipline stays when emotion disappears.
- 4:14If you rely, ladies and gentlemen, on motivation,
- 4:18your progress becomes inconsistent.
- 4:22If you rely on basically your systems, and
- 4:29your progress becomes stable, that's a different thing.
- 4:35That's the difference between a short-term effort
- 4:37and a long-term identity.
- 4:39And our identity is what shapes who we
- 4:43are.
- 4:43And ladies and gentlemen, that comes from what?
- 4:45Our core values.
- 4:48Yes, our core values.
- 4:50And I think sometimes people, like, they miss
- 4:53that point, right?
- 4:54They miss the point of the core values.
- 4:58Everything we do is about our core values.
- 5:00Number one, motivation fades, but discipline remains stable
- 5:04over time.
- 5:05Now, consistency is built on structure, not emotion,
- 5:08guys.
- 5:09Many people think it is emotion, but it's
- 5:12not built on that.
- 5:13Number two, you must act even when you
- 5:16do not feel ready.
- 5:17Maybe you're tired, maybe the weather is bad,
- 5:21still got to act.
- 5:23Readiness is often a delay mechanism.
- 5:25That's key, guys.
- 5:26Number three, feelings are not reliable indicators of
- 5:30action.
- 5:31They shift too quickly, and they guide consistency,
- 5:42OK?
- 5:42If we go too quick, we'll miss the
- 5:44consistency.
- 5:45Number four, systems always outperform emotional decisions, hands
- 5:48down.
- 5:49We never hire a fire on emotions.
- 5:51We do it on logic.
- 5:52Structure beats impulse every single time.
- 5:55Why do we keep doing it?
- 5:57Well, I'll tell you why, because people are
- 5:59comfortable, and they just want to keep doing
- 6:00that over and over and over and over
- 6:02again.
- 6:04So that's an important thing to think about,
- 6:08right?
- 6:08Number five, showing up daily removes internal negotiation.
- 6:16Routines eliminate hesitation.
- 6:19Now, they're not easy to get going.
- 6:21I will grant you that.
- 6:23They're not easy to get going, but they
- 6:25do have a pretty big following once you
- 6:29get them going.
- 6:30Number six, small habits create long-term transformation.
- 6:34Repetition compounds quietly.
- 6:37Number seven, discipline builds trust in yourself.
- 6:42Self-belief is earned through action, action.
- 6:48Number eight, consistency is more powerful than any
- 6:53level of intensity.
- 6:55Sustained effort beats short bursts.
- 6:57Now, some people might think, oh, gee, if
- 6:59I'm strong for a short period of time,
- 7:00that's great.
- 7:01But really, guys, it's a facade.
- 7:04And you're just going to be like, how
- 7:06do I even do this?
- 7:08And you're going to have days where it's
- 7:10going to be easy.
- 7:11You're going to have days that are just
- 7:13going to be like, what do I do
- 7:15today?
- 7:15How do I even start?
- 7:19And those things can pull you down, so
- 7:21it is important to have a good routine.
- 7:26Number nine, waiting for the perfect moment delays
- 7:29progress.
- 7:30Guys, I said there's no perfect moment or
- 7:32time.
- 7:33Perfection is often an avoidance in disguise.
- 7:37Done is better than perfect.
- 7:39You can always go back and make something
- 7:41better.
- 7:42Every single time, you can do that.
- 7:45Number 10, action creates clarity faster than thinking.
- 7:51Movement reveals direction, direction.
- 7:55A lot of people, you know what happens,
- 7:57guys?
- 7:57They lack direction.
- 8:00They become part of direction when something's not
- 8:04working because they have to change something, right?
- 8:06That's important.
- 8:11I'll tell you that's important to know.
- 8:14Yeah.
- 8:16I think when we know the direction we're
- 8:19going, life becomes a little bit easier.
- 8:23I'm not saying it's easy, but it becomes
- 8:25easier when we know the direction that we
- 8:28are moving toward, right?
- 8:31I think that's a very important thing to
- 8:36understand.
- 8:39I know that can contribute to everything, right?
- 8:44I know that can be
- 8:54hard for a lot of people, but guys,
- 8:58it's the truth.
- 9:01It's absolutely the truth.
- 9:03And they say the truth will set you
- 9:05free, and it will.
- 9:11But you first have to understand where truth
- 9:14is coming from.
- 9:15Is it coming from the North, the South,
- 9:17the East, the West, or is it not
- 9:19coming at all?
- 9:23Are you making up what the truth really
- 9:25is?
- 9:27I think that can hurt people.
- 9:29If we make up what the truth is,
- 9:31then that can really cause us to be,
- 9:34I'm going to say that can cause us
- 9:35to be confused, right?
- 9:39And the reason it can cause us to
- 9:41be confused is because when we don't know
- 9:43what's happening, we suddenly get confused.
- 9:49And so we figure, well, maybe we should
- 9:50give up.
- 9:51Maybe we should do something else.
- 9:52But I want to tell you guys, you
- 9:53don't give up.
- 9:55Don't you dare give up, okay?
- 9:58That's an important piece of the puzzle, to
- 10:03not ever, ever, ever give up, right?
- 10:08I know you're probably saying, John, I don't
- 10:11get this.
- 10:11It's not easy.
- 10:14I understand.
- 10:16But I want to tell you that it's
- 10:18something that you will get after you work
- 10:22at it.
- 10:22Because you see, a lot of times people
- 10:26go for that shorter, that faster, that easier
- 10:29road, but that road is not the best
- 10:31road.
- 10:32It seems like it is because it's quick,
- 10:35right?
- 10:36Sometimes it's cheap.
- 10:39But I'll say what I've said before.
- 10:41If you put the time in now and
- 10:43things are harder now, later will be easier.
- 10:47If you do things easier now, later will
- 10:49be harder.
- 10:50I'd rather have later easier.
- 10:53So it's okay to have it harder now.
- 10:55Number 11, your habits gradually define your identity.
- 10:58We've said this many times.
- 11:00Behavior becomes who you are inside.
- 11:05Number 12, routines reduce mental resistance.
- 11:09Automotion and the automation of it removes friction,
- 11:19making your actions automatic or possible.
- 11:23Less thinking creates more execution.
- 11:26And what could be better than more execution?
- 11:31Well, understanding why things work or why things
- 11:34don't work.
- 11:35I think that's something that many people get
- 11:38tripped up on, right?
- 11:39They get tripped up on.
- 11:40Number 14, we've all fallen to this boat
- 11:43before.
- 11:44It's called decision fatigue, yes.
- 11:46And decision fatigue weakens discipline.
- 11:50Yeah, it does.
- 11:51Silification strengthens control, guys.
- 11:54When we make something easier, we're able to
- 11:59understand something better, okay?
- 12:02Number 15, winning your mornings sets your entire
- 12:09day.
- 12:11Early structure creates momentum, momentum.
- 12:18And I think when we can have a
- 12:20small win in the morning, it's like, oh
- 12:21my gosh, that was so amazing, that was
- 12:23so great, right?
- 12:28But I think it can cause challenges for
- 12:30people because, again, they're confused.
- 12:33They don't know how things are working.
- 12:39If we make things easier and less complex,
- 12:44we're probably gonna be able to do them
- 12:45faster in the beginning.
- 12:47We could always make things harder down the
- 12:49road, but why do we wanna make things
- 12:52harder?
- 12:52I mean, that's probably the question that I
- 12:55wanna ask you.
- 12:56Why do we wanna make things harder, okay?
- 13:01And it's important to understand that you can
- 13:06change, but it comes down to who you
- 13:10are.
- 13:13And maybe you're gonna say to me, John,
- 13:15I've done this, I've tried this, but it
- 13:17didn't work.
- 13:19Well, it didn't work because you probably were
- 13:21either not consistent, okay?
- 13:26Or you didn't have a structure.
- 13:27You have to have both to be successful.
- 13:29I don't care what you're doing.
- 13:31I don't care whether you're baking bread, whether
- 13:33you're cutting lawns, whether you're balancing a budget,
- 13:37whether you're engineering a world rocket ship.
- 13:40You have to have those two things, consistency
- 13:42and structure.
- 13:44Number 16, guys, your environment influences your discipline.
- 13:48Surroundings shape our behavior, even with us not
- 13:52being aware of it.
- 13:53It's, well, unconscious.
- 13:56So our unconscious really does affect our lives.
- 14:00People think it doesn't.
- 14:02Surroundings, you go to certain places, they paint
- 14:05things a certain way.
- 14:06Why?
- 14:06Because they want your, let's say, neurological system
- 14:14to be in aligned a certain way.
- 14:19I think that's an important thing is that
- 14:20when we know that we know, we have
- 14:25more confidence, but confidence doesn't appear like that.
- 14:33It could take some time.
- 14:35Number 17, non-negotiables protect your progress.
- 14:40It's okay to have non-negotiables.
- 14:43Absolutely okay.
- 14:46But don't go back.
- 14:48Don't renege on that.
- 14:50That's an important thing.
- 14:51Do not renege on that, right?
- 14:54Keep them in play no matter what.
- 14:57Boundaries create consistency.
- 15:00Don't be making exceptions or looking for ways
- 15:03that you can do that.
- 15:04Because when you do that, guys, you actually
- 15:07hurt yourself.
- 15:10You hurt yourself.
- 15:12And nobody wants to hurt themselves, do they?
- 15:14But they do because the body's craving something.
- 15:27And the body is craving order, not chaos.
- 15:34When the body understands order, when the body
- 15:38can just go in a flow, it becomes
- 15:42easier.
- 15:43Number 18, guys, tracking progress reinforces commitment.
- 15:50Measurement builds awareness, guys.
- 15:53I said before, if we cannot measure it,
- 15:58we definitely cannot change it.
- 16:01If we cannot measure it, we cannot change
- 16:05it.
- 16:06So we have to be able to figure
- 16:07out how we measure something, right?
- 16:12And once we can do that, then we
- 16:15know that if we change the inputs, we
- 16:19will get different outputs.
- 16:22We know that.
- 16:23That's a fact.
- 16:25Number 19, guys, accountability increases execution quality.
- 16:32Question I have for you is why are
- 16:33so many people not accountable?
- 16:37You know, they punched out a certain time
- 16:38and then they left.
- 16:41But why?
- 16:48I think it comes down to the fact
- 16:52that most people, when they see an easy
- 16:55way out, they want to take it.
- 16:57Not everybody.
- 16:59And they've learned that when you do that,
- 17:03it doesn't work.
- 17:04But they don't catch that until later on,
- 17:07until they've unfortunately gone down the wrong path,
- 17:10until they've had the misfortune, unfortunately.
- 17:17People always think you can cut corners and
- 17:21no one will notice.
- 17:23Or that you can get by and it
- 17:27won't make a difference, right?
- 17:30Like if you buy a brand name of
- 17:33cheese versus one that's not a brand name.
- 17:36Is there a difference?
- 17:38There could be, right?
- 17:40The taste, the consistency, the texture.
- 17:46There absolutely could be differences.
- 17:47And then there may not be.
- 17:49But usually there are.
- 17:51If you pay a little more, usually it
- 17:52is worth more.
- 17:55Responsibility sharpens focus.
- 17:57So when we understand that our responsibility sharpens
- 18:00focus, we're more apt to pay attention to
- 18:05it.
- 18:06Other people will start paying attention to our
- 18:09mannerisms.
- 18:12And that will get them to either want
- 18:15to be with us or not.
- 18:21It's making an impression.
- 18:22And they've said this many times before.
- 18:24You cannot go back and make a first
- 18:27impression ever again.
- 18:28You can only do it one time.
- 18:31You can only do it one time.
- 18:35I think that's an important thing, guys.
- 18:38You can only do it one time.
- 18:40Number 20.
- 18:42Doing hard things daily will build resistance.
- 18:46I'm not going to say you're going to
- 18:47like it, but it will build resilience.
- 18:51Challenge creates strength.
- 18:55It's good to raise the bar.
- 18:57I'm not telling you to raise it out
- 18:59of the stadium, but I'm telling you to
- 19:00raise it a little bit of time.
- 19:01Because if you raise it too much, you're
- 19:04going to actually, well, you're going to get
- 19:08disappointed.
- 19:10I think that's a hard thing.
- 19:12Because if you get disappointed, you're maybe not
- 19:16going to put the full effort in anymore.
- 19:20So raise the bar a little bit at
- 19:24a time.
- 19:27OK?
- 19:28Raise it so it's just a little bit
- 19:30more difficult.
- 19:31Don't make it that it's going to stress
- 19:33you out.
- 19:34But raise that bar.
- 19:36And keep raising it.
- 19:37When you reach it, raise it again.
- 19:40Number 21.
- 19:42Growth requires discomfort.
- 19:44I have said this so many times, that
- 19:46growth requires discomfort.
- 19:50Right?
- 19:53Why?
- 19:56It's because we have to get used to
- 19:59doing something different.
- 20:00Maybe it's something new.
- 20:02Maybe we have to change our pattern.
- 20:04Maybe we're afraid that we may not be
- 20:06good at it.
- 20:08And so we put all these what if,
- 20:10what if, what ifs in our mind, instead
- 20:13of actually focusing on learning the task at
- 20:17hand.
- 20:18Do we think the task is just going
- 20:20to fall away?
- 20:21No.
- 20:22So why do we spend so much time
- 20:24procrastinating about doing something?
- 20:27Just learn it.
- 20:27You've got to learn it anyway.
- 20:28Number 22.
- 20:30Comfort limits expansion.
- 20:33I said before, everybody wants the warm blanket,
- 20:36or they want the air conditioning, or they
- 20:38want to feel comfortable in the plush chair.
- 20:42And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 20:44But I'm here to tell you that if
- 20:45you want to grow, things are going to
- 20:48become uncomfortable.
- 20:49I didn't say painful.
- 20:50I said uncomfortable.
- 20:53Right?
- 20:54So discomfort is part of our daily development.
- 20:58Resistance signals progress.
- 21:03And that's something you should understand.
- 21:06It's not going to come very easy for
- 21:09you.
- 21:09But I can tell you this.
- 21:10It will get easier the more that you
- 21:12move on.
- 21:14The more that you move on, the easier
- 21:17it will become.
- 21:18It's not going to do that overnight, guys.
- 21:23The more that you chip away at something,
- 21:27the easier it will be for you.
- 21:29Next time you go to it, you may
- 21:30not be chipping away.
- 21:31You might find that, wow, I actually got
- 21:33this.
- 21:34Number 23.
- 21:35Hey, there's that word again.
- 21:36Structure keeps you aligned when the motivation drops.
- 21:41Motivation is nice, but it doesn't last.
- 21:47Because motivation is tied to our current state
- 21:50of how we feel.
- 21:52And if we feel a certain way, we
- 21:53still got to keep doing what we need
- 21:55to do.
- 21:55We still got to keep the consistency.
- 21:57We still got to keep the structure, regardless.
- 22:01System-stabilized behavior.
- 22:03When we learn how to build systems and
- 22:06we learn how to repeat them and use
- 22:07them, our behavior starts to grow.
- 22:10That's important, guys.
- 22:12Number 24.
- 22:13Keeping promises to yourself builds identity strength.
- 22:17Self-trust comes from the follow-through.
- 22:21And many people don't want to follow through
- 22:23because, well, they don't know what's going to
- 22:26happen.
- 22:27They don't know what the responsibility is.
- 22:29Number 25.
- 22:31Discipline compounds over time, like interest does in
- 22:34the bank.
- 22:36Repetition multiplies results.
- 22:38So if we get a little bit better
- 22:40each day, that's a win.
- 22:44It's a win.
- 22:47And I think a lot of people, when
- 22:48they get better, like, well, you know, I
- 22:49got this better, but I'm not as good
- 22:51as I should be.
- 22:53Okay, you're not as good as you should
- 22:54be.
- 22:55But why are you complaining?
- 22:59Why are you complaining?
- 23:05I want to know that.
- 23:06I want to know why you are complaining.
- 23:13Why are you complaining?
- 23:18I think the reason you're complaining is that
- 23:21you are not where you want to be.
- 23:24So you figure it's easier to complain and
- 23:26whine.
- 23:28It's not going to be good.
- 23:30People around you don't want to be around
- 23:32people that complain.
- 23:34You're going to demotivate yourself too.
- 23:37Number 26.
- 23:40Mental toughness is built through repetition.
- 23:43The more that we repeat and we practice,
- 23:48the better we become.
- 23:51That doesn't happen day one.
- 23:54Does a baseball player that's just learning how
- 23:56to play ball, maybe not in pro, but
- 23:58in, let's say, some of the, maybe the
- 24:03varsity leagues, is he ready for major league
- 24:05baseball?
- 24:06No.
- 24:08Could he be ready?
- 24:08Sure.
- 24:09He's got to keep practicing.
- 24:11He's got to build that resilience, right?
- 24:14Build that mental toughness.
- 24:16See, consistency strengthens the endurance.
- 24:20But again, it's not going to be comfortable.
- 24:25Sorry, it's not a picnic.
- 24:28Number 27.
- 24:30Reliability is a learned behavior.
- 24:33It's not built.
- 24:35It's not inherited.
- 24:37It's something we learn.
- 24:39And when we learn that, it's like, oh,
- 24:41now I get it.
- 24:41Now I understand.
- 24:43Now I understand how or why that works.
- 24:46But if I don't understand that, I start
- 24:50making excuses to why something's not working.
- 24:53And I think that's a very big problem
- 24:55for a lot of people.
- 24:57They just make excuses.
- 25:05And making excuses might seem great because you
- 25:10have a way to shirk the responsibility and
- 25:12you have a way to procrastinate.
- 25:16But tomorrow never comes.
- 25:19You keep putting it off and putting it
- 25:21off and putting it off.
- 25:22You don't really get anywhere.
- 25:25You just keep having a bunch of empty
- 25:30promises, a bunch of disappointments to yourself and
- 25:33even others.
- 25:35Number 28.
- 25:36Execution is the final form of discipline.
- 25:42Thinking without action is incomplete.
- 25:48Right?
- 25:49My grandfather always said, John, we have to
- 25:52measure twice and cut once.
- 25:54What did he mean by that?
- 25:55He meant that you can't make something longer.
- 25:59You can always make it shorter, but you
- 26:01can't make it any longer.
- 26:12I think that's a very important thing.
- 26:18And when we understand that, when we can
- 26:22embrace that, it's only then that we can
- 26:25grow.
- 26:27Number 29, guys.
- 26:28You become what you repeatedly do under pressure.
- 26:33And pressure reveals your identity.
- 26:37Number 30, guys.
- 26:38Internal discipline is the foundation of all success.
- 26:42Everything else, well, it depends on it.
- 26:45It's part of the foundation.
- 26:48Can't have one without the other.
- 26:51In closing today, I'd like to wrap up
- 26:54and say a few things.
- 26:55So here is the truth.
- 26:58Are you guys ready for the truth?
- 26:59Can you handle the truth?
- 27:00I hope you can.
- 27:02You do not need more motivation.
- 27:05You need stronger structure.
- 27:08You need consistency.
- 27:10Because motivation will leave you from time to
- 27:12time.
- 27:13But discipline will stay with you at your
- 27:16side all the time.
- 27:17And when discipline becomes internal, you no longer
- 27:22wait to act.
- 27:24You simply execute.
- 27:26I'm John C.
- 27:27Morley, serial entrepreneur.
- 27:29This has been Inspirations For Your Life.
- 27:32And this is where discipline becomes identity.
