Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This week's episode of Pit Talk is brought to you
- 0:02Speaker 1: by Shannons. Moto GP dazzled under the lights for round
- 0:06Speaker 1: four of the twenty twenty five World Championship and Mark
- 0:10Speaker 1: Marquez dominated in the desert and it was a statement
- 0:14Speaker 1: ride a vintage Marquees, full of confidence, control and a
- 0:17Speaker 1: touch of chaos. But behind him the battle was fierce.
- 0:21Speaker 1: You caddies, inner wars heated up, the KTM showed flashes
- 0:25Speaker 1: of brilliance and Joge Martin had that incredibly lucky escape.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm your host, Rinita Vanmulan, and joining me is the
- 0:32Speaker 1: man who can dissect a Moto GP weekend faster than
- 0:35Speaker 1: a ju Catt can launch off the line. Matt Clayton, Matt,
- 0:39Speaker 1: where do we even start? After that desert showdown?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Wow?
- 0:43Speaker 3: Brnanda, Look, there was so much going on, and I'm
- 0:46Speaker 3: very keen to get your perspective on what was going on,
- 0:48Speaker 3: giving you had a closer seat to it than me,
- 0:50Speaker 3: because to take readers behind the curtain a little bit here.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Everyone knows kitars in a brutal time zone for Australia.
- 0:55Speaker 3: So I'm sitting there at two fifty five am on
- 0:58Speaker 3: Sprint Day and and then a voice I could hear
- 1:01Speaker 3: at the circle across the TV is yours. And that
- 1:03Speaker 3: completely threw me because I know I'm tired. I'm not
- 1:06Speaker 3: quite with it, but there's something not quite right about that.
- 1:08Speaker 3: But we'll get to that in the future. But look,
- 1:10Speaker 3: it was a predictable results if you look at the
- 1:14Speaker 3: classification at the end of the weekend. But how we
- 1:16Speaker 3: got there, As you said in the intro, Man, there
- 1:19Speaker 3: were some twists and turns in this and the Johey, Martine,
- 1:22Speaker 3: there's something we'll touch upon because I don't know whether
- 1:24Speaker 3: he's cross paths with a black cat, or walked under
- 1:26Speaker 3: a ladder, or broken a mirror or done all three
- 1:28Speaker 3: of those things. But you could just not have worse
- 1:30Speaker 3: luck than that guy at the moment, could you.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I really felt for him. And when I spoke to
- 1:34Speaker 1: him on the weekend when I was there and I asked,
- 1:36Speaker 1: how's the body? How are you feeling? He goes, look
- 1:39Speaker 1: the body saw but I'm feeling good and I'm eager
- 1:41Speaker 1: to get back out. He was adamant of saying, I'm
- 1:43Speaker 1: not going to try and fight for a win. This
- 1:45Speaker 1: is testing, this is me just getting back up to speed.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But the fact that when that crash happened on Sunday
- 1:51Speaker 1: during the race and we saw the multiple replays, I
- 1:55Speaker 1: also felt for Digito who had nowhere to go. He
- 1:58Speaker 1: did his absolute bad But then the fact that Jorges
- 2:01Speaker 1: sitting on the side of the track, the riders are
- 2:04Speaker 1: going around, it's still yellow flag in whatever sector it was,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I get this guy off the track, red flag or something,
- 2:11Speaker 1: because clearly he is not okay. So that really scared me.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Yeah, look, definitely, I think any time you see that.
- 2:18Speaker 3: The one thing that did give me a little bit
- 2:20Speaker 3: of optimism was that he was moving like he's clearly
- 2:23Speaker 3: saw and clearly beaten up, but it wasn't like he
- 2:25Speaker 3: was laying prone on the side of the track.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So that was a positive.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Where he was on the track relative to the bikes
- 2:30Speaker 3: going through that particular corner, that was the bit that
- 2:33Speaker 3: was a little bit disconcerting for me, because I'm not
- 2:35Speaker 3: sure that yellows are enough in that situation. But then,
- 2:38Speaker 3: if you've read Flagg the right, I mean there's a
- 2:40Speaker 3: number of knock on effects from red flagging a race
- 2:43Speaker 3: like that, so I can see in some respects why
- 2:44Speaker 3: they didn't. But yeah, you mentioned Fabio Degan Antonio his
- 2:49Speaker 3: post race press debrief. I'm not sure whether you're in
- 2:51Speaker 3: that or not, but he had spent the next couple
- 2:54Speaker 3: of laps. You know, Martine had fallen right in front
- 2:56Speaker 3: of him. He knew that he'd hit him, and there
- 2:58Speaker 3: was no way of avoiding that. He's looking on the
- 3:00Speaker 3: big screens as he's riding around the next few laps
- 3:03Speaker 3: after his own race had been completely ruined at the
- 3:05Speaker 3: beginning of the race, looking to see where Martine is.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Is he moving And you can imagine the emotions that
- 3:12Speaker 3: were going through his head while he was doing that,
- 3:14Speaker 3: because he's inadvertently been involved in every.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Rider's worst nightmare of an accident.
- 3:19Speaker 3: He was pretty emotionally fraught anyway, because he was angry
- 3:22Speaker 3: with the way his own race had played out. And
- 3:24Speaker 3: you looked at him in that post race debrief and
- 3:26Speaker 3: he was a guy that you could almost see the
- 3:28Speaker 3: gears wearing at his head as he was trying to
- 3:30Speaker 3: process everything that was going on. He knew, and we
- 3:33Speaker 3: knew that we'd escaped something far worse. When we've seen
- 3:37Speaker 3: accidents like this in the past end up with far
- 3:38Speaker 3: worse consequences. But Jorge Martin, now you look at the injuries.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Eleven fractured ribs and a punctured lung. And I don't
- 3:48Speaker 3: know whether anyone listening to this is actually fractured a
- 3:49Speaker 3: rib before. I've done about three of them, and it's
- 3:52Speaker 3: the worst thing, by a mile, that's ever happened to me,
- 3:54Speaker 3: because you can't brace them, you can't splinter them. You
- 3:56Speaker 3: have to wait for them to heal, and every little
- 3:58Speaker 3: thing like sneeze is the worst possible thing ever. So
- 4:02Speaker 3: here you got Martine laying in a hospital in Katar.
- 4:05Speaker 3: He can't fly at normal altitude to get back to
- 4:07Speaker 3: Europe because of the pain and the swelling, so he's
- 4:09Speaker 3: going to take a low level medical flight to get back.
- 4:13Speaker 3: His season was pretty much ruined before this weekend because
- 4:16Speaker 3: of what happened in the preseason. It's completely ruined now.
- 4:19Speaker 3: But he's going to be out for a while. The
- 4:22Speaker 3: fortunate thing for all of us is that there is
- 4:24Speaker 3: a timeline for his return because for a while there
- 4:26Speaker 3: that could have been super dicey.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Couldn't it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Oh when you saw the posts or what he was
- 4:30Speaker 1: doing on social media from the hospital bed, you see
- 4:34Speaker 1: the tubes hanging out of him. You could see him
- 4:37Speaker 1: physically in pain. You really fell for him, Like you said,
- 4:41Speaker 1: what has caused this bad luck for Juay Martin? Because
- 4:43Speaker 1: coming fresh from a World championship last year, we know
- 4:46Speaker 1: what he's capable of. A parlier we could see that
- 4:49Speaker 1: small glimpse of preseason that he was getting used to
- 4:52Speaker 1: the bike and the riding, soul and everything that he
- 4:54Speaker 1: was having to change. But now it's gone from two
- 4:57Speaker 1: steps back to ten steps back. Though you reported on
- 5:01Speaker 1: it for the whole weekend for Fox. What's your timeline
- 5:04Speaker 1: When do you think Jorge is going to return? Do
- 5:06Speaker 1: you think he's going to return? Because this is a
- 5:08Speaker 1: question I've had going is is this him going? No? Look,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I've won the World championship. This is him, Danni. He's
- 5:15Speaker 1: ticked his goal. He doesn't want to come back. Or
- 5:17Speaker 1: do you think he's still got that fight in him?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yeah? I think there's He will be back at some
- 5:22Speaker 3: point this season I would suspect, but not for anything
- 5:25Speaker 3: meaningful because the championships, the title defense hasn't got out
- 5:29Speaker 3: of first gear. Quite frankly, that's not going to happen.
- 5:32Speaker 3: We know where Ducati is that relative to everybody else.
- 5:35Speaker 3: He knew that when he left to go to a Priulier,
- 5:37Speaker 3: so I think he's kind of playing with house money
- 5:39Speaker 3: a little bit. He won the championship with Ducati last year.
- 5:42Speaker 3: He will want to come back and prove that I
- 5:45Speaker 3: am a world champion quality rider on bikes that.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Aren't a Ducaddi.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And so by the end of the year, assuming he
- 5:51Speaker 3: gets back to something resembling full fitness, I could see
- 5:54Speaker 3: him being that guy that's challenging the Ducatties for occasional
- 5:57Speaker 3: race wins or particularly sprint wins. We know how goodies
- 5:59Speaker 3: and that show format. That's got to be the goal
- 6:02Speaker 3: for this year. But everything needs to be looked at
- 6:04Speaker 3: with him through that longer lens of We've got this
- 6:07Speaker 3: massive motor GP regulation change for twenty seven right so
- 6:10Speaker 3: at the moment, Gukati's just wiping the floor with everybody.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They've won twenty one straight Grand Prix.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It would be a huge surprise if that changes this year,
- 6:18Speaker 3: probably rolling to next year a little bit, because why
- 6:20Speaker 3: these manufacturer are going to throw a heap of development
- 6:22Speaker 3: at a bike and rule set that's going to change anyway.
- 6:25Speaker 3: So I can kind of see the way it's going
- 6:27Speaker 3: at the moment, will probably go for most of the
- 6:30Speaker 3: next eight eight months. He wants to be ready at Aprilia,
- 6:33Speaker 3: have everything the way he wants it for twenty seven
- 6:36Speaker 3: and that big reset, that's the clean sheet of paper, right,
- 6:39Speaker 3: that's when we get this hard reset for the series
- 6:41Speaker 3: where you're not going to watch each race and go okay,
- 6:43Speaker 3: so which do Cati is going to be on pole
- 6:45Speaker 3: and which Ducati is going to win? I think you're
- 6:47Speaker 3: going to have a far greater spread of riders and manufacturers.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So he's got to take the long lens with this.
- 6:53Speaker 3: He's got the he's got the World championship, so he
- 6:56Speaker 3: doesn't have to really fret about that. He's obviously got
- 6:58Speaker 3: He's been paid as a factory rider now, so that's
- 7:00Speaker 3: hopeful too, obviously, but he's still young enough and ambitious
- 7:03Speaker 3: enough that I think he'll still be super keen to
- 7:05Speaker 3: get back to the front.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But he can afford to be a little bit patient.
- 7:08Speaker 3: He's not only twenty seven, right, so time's on his
- 7:10Speaker 3: side to a degree. He just doesn't need to rush
- 7:14Speaker 3: back now. There's nothing meaningful to fight for this year.
- 7:17Speaker 3: The number one priority has to be his health and
- 7:19Speaker 3: then almost treat the rest of this year as like
- 7:22Speaker 3: a huge preseason run into twenty six but this season
- 7:25Speaker 3: as we know it now is shot.
- 7:28Speaker 1: This season litt let me try to again that's this
- 7:30Speaker 1: season may be shot for Johe Martin. But Mark Marquez,
- 7:35Speaker 1: if like let's talk about that he hadn't won in
- 7:39Speaker 1: Kata since twenty fourteen, comes back first year on Factory
- 7:44Speaker 1: Jacaddi literally out of the gate boom, Mark Marquez. Was
- 7:47Speaker 1: it a shock? Probably not necessarily because it is Mark Marquees,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but even going into this weekend, in the press conference
- 7:55Speaker 1: on the Thursday, Mark's going, oh, look, I'm technically I'm
- 7:59Speaker 1: not the strongest the track Pecker Bannay is even he goes,
- 8:02Speaker 1: my brother Alex Marquez is a lot stronger at this
- 8:05Speaker 1: circuit than I am, and he's on you know, Grissini
- 8:08Speaker 1: ju Caddi. So going into this weekend, either he was
- 8:11Speaker 1: playing those mind games straight away or he just generally
- 8:13Speaker 1: didn't think that maybe he could win and go out
- 8:17Speaker 1: and dominate and then look what happened Cole sprint win
- 8:20Speaker 1: and Sunday victory.
- 8:22Speaker 3: This was a different one though to the ones we've
- 8:23Speaker 3: seen earlier in the season at tracks where we know
- 8:25Speaker 3: he's really good, Like I mean, he Obviously he binned
- 8:27Speaker 3: it in the Grand Prix at Kota, but to see
- 8:29Speaker 3: the way he handled that CODA weekend, that wasn't a surprise.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Argentina was the same, Thailand was the same. As you mentioned,
- 8:35Speaker 3: this is a track he had one acts, it's twenty fourteen,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and other riders have better cvs here, they're stronger here.
- 8:41Speaker 3: But one by one the others kind of dropped the
- 8:44Speaker 3: ball a little bit. Baangnai crashed in qualifying, was too
- 8:46Speaker 3: far back on the grid. That sort of took him
- 8:48Speaker 3: out of the way he preferred to run that race.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Alex Marquez had the incident with De jan Antonio earlier
- 8:54Speaker 3: in the race, got a ride through that took him
- 8:56Speaker 3: out of the front group. So one by one the
- 8:58Speaker 3: guys who were probably going to challenge Mark over the
- 9:01Speaker 3: Grand Prix distance were with self inflicted wounds. Really, they
- 9:04Speaker 3: took themselves out of the equation. I think I don't
- 9:06Speaker 3: know about you, but the thing that's so impressive with
- 9:08Speaker 3: me with Mark this year is he's not doing what
- 9:11Speaker 3: Mark used to do in that he would almost want
- 9:13Speaker 3: to flex how much speed and power he had in reserve,
- 9:16Speaker 3: because he would just go out and totally dominate I'm
- 9:19Speaker 3: not sure I've seen him ride smarter than this in
- 9:22Speaker 3: that now he knows, he said at the end of
- 9:25Speaker 3: the Grand Prix and Qatar, Morbidelli took the lead on
- 9:27Speaker 3: the first lap and Mark was like, well, that's fine,
- 9:30Speaker 3: he's just going to go on Bernie's tires out. I'll
- 9:31Speaker 3: just wait for him to come back to me, whereas younger,
- 9:34Speaker 3: more impatient Mark would have said, no, I'm getting back
- 9:37Speaker 3: in front of you right now. And so Mark's now
- 9:39Speaker 3: playing super clever. You combine that with a fantastic bike,
- 9:44Speaker 3: and you combine that with the fact that he's still
- 9:46Speaker 3: got that I'm kind of making up for lost time
- 9:48Speaker 3: thing about him, and that he knows this is huge
- 9:50Speaker 3: gap in his CV because of the injuries and the
- 9:53Speaker 3: recoveries and the surgeries and what have you. It's almost
- 9:56Speaker 3: like he's determined to come back and win a different
- 9:58Speaker 3: way to show that it's not just about speed, it's
- 10:01Speaker 3: having the speed and when you choose to deploy it,
- 10:04Speaker 3: and just writing more intelligently than the rest. So you
- 10:07Speaker 3: look at the way he pieced that Qatar weekend together.
- 10:10Speaker 3: He saved some sire, he saved some tire. Vignale has
- 10:13Speaker 3: made a mistake in upfront and we'll talk about Maverick
- 10:15Speaker 3: in a second, I'm sure. And that was the moment
- 10:17Speaker 3: it's like all right, time to go now. And he
- 10:19Speaker 3: knew that Banyai had charged through from the fourth row
- 10:22Speaker 3: to be in the mix, but would have consumed so
- 10:24Speaker 3: much tiger to get there that he wasn't going to
- 10:26Speaker 3: have the staying power. And you saw how much Mark
- 10:28Speaker 3: had in reserve once he got to the lead, set
- 10:30Speaker 3: a fastest lap, said another fastest lap, and that was
- 10:33Speaker 3: just like, see you guys later. So it's interesting you
- 10:36Speaker 3: look at the points tally and it's win win when
- 10:38Speaker 3: you know the one outlier with the Cota Grand Prix.
- 10:41Speaker 3: To me, it's how he's doing it, not what he's doing,
- 10:43Speaker 3: because I just think he's riding smarter than he's ever ridden.
- 10:46Speaker 3: You combine that with everything else that's already in his favor,
- 10:48Speaker 3: this is probably the best version of Mark we've seen, speaking.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Of value him writing smarta. Do you think Peco's seeing this?
- 10:56Speaker 1: And now we're starting to see those small little mistakes
- 10:58Speaker 1: like him crashing qualifying, like even the fact that Alex
- 11:02Speaker 1: Marque has I think he collided with Mark in the
- 11:04Speaker 1: sprint and then Collidible did you and the Grand Prix.
- 11:08Speaker 1: These these little mistakes that these other writers are going
- 11:10Speaker 1: to make because maybe that pressure is getting there because
- 11:13Speaker 1: they know what Mark is capable of and they have
- 11:15Speaker 1: to push that bit harder to reach out same level.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, the Banyai thing is interesting to me. I don't
- 11:20Speaker 3: know how you feel about this, because Banyaya were always
- 11:22Speaker 3: sort of painters, being this intelligent.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Cerebral writing. The professor as you like to call it.
- 11:27Speaker 3: He's the guy who has everything worked out and then
- 11:29Speaker 3: executes the plan. It must be pretty galling for Peco
- 11:32Speaker 3: right now because Mark's come into his team and Mark's
- 11:35Speaker 3: kind of beating him, beating him at his own game.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You know, he's proving to be quick, but he's also
- 11:39Speaker 3: writing intelligently and doing the smart things that Peco is
- 11:42Speaker 3: renowned for. And I think that's why Banyai was kicking
- 11:45Speaker 3: himself so much after katar in that if he starts,
- 11:48Speaker 3: even if he's on the front two road. So Peco
- 11:50Speaker 3: was fourth on the grid or something. You can actually
- 11:52Speaker 3: try and take this version of Mark on from there.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Being back on that fourth row. There was just too
- 11:58Speaker 3: much to do in that first four or five laps
- 11:59Speaker 3: to get there. So that's where he would have been
- 12:01Speaker 3: kicking himself, because this is a circuit where you know,
- 12:04Speaker 3: you put them heads ahead here Banyay has a better
- 12:07Speaker 3: CV at Qatar. So if this is what Mark's capable
- 12:11Speaker 3: of at a circuit where it's not great for him,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and there's a couple of them on the calendar where
- 12:15Speaker 3: he's been sort of so so over the years, if
- 12:17Speaker 3: this is what he's doing at a circuit where he's
- 12:19Speaker 3: not had the success in the past, you look at
- 12:22Speaker 3: what's coming up. You know we're going to go to
- 12:23Speaker 3: the Saxon Rig at some point. You know how that's
- 12:25Speaker 3: going to end. And there's a few of these tracks
- 12:26Speaker 3: later in the season where you know, Philip Island's another
- 12:28Speaker 3: one where we know how good Mark is. So for
- 12:32Speaker 3: the others, this becomes a psychological game as much as anything.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I've been super impressed with Alex Marquez the entire year
- 12:38Speaker 3: and the fact that he had sustained it for three
- 12:40Speaker 3: straight rounds, finish, executed, everything was hugely impressive and not
- 12:43Speaker 3: something we've seen from him before. But Alex Mark is
- 12:46Speaker 3: who he is for a reason because he has not
- 12:49Speaker 3: been able to sustain that and there were a couple
- 12:51Speaker 3: of little wobbles in Qatar that saw him fall behind
- 12:53Speaker 3: the wayside a little bit. So at the moment, it
- 12:56Speaker 3: kind of looks like the only person that's capable of
- 12:58Speaker 3: beating Mark is Mark at the moment, and we saw
- 13:00Speaker 3: that in Kota seven out of eight so far. But
- 13:03Speaker 3: I think for Banyaya, that qualifying crashes. That's the sort
- 13:06Speaker 3: of crash you make when you're under the pump a
- 13:08Speaker 3: little bit. You know, you're just trying that little bit
- 13:11Speaker 3: extra to get on terms with the guy because you
- 13:13Speaker 3: know deep down you might not have the raw speed
- 13:15Speaker 3: to go with him. And that was just like a
- 13:16Speaker 3: bit of an overreach, I think for Peco, and it
- 13:18Speaker 3: had pretty disasterrous consequences. So we know that, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 3: he has that, the way of thinking that he has,
- 13:25Speaker 3: the way he races.
- 13:26Speaker 2: He will learn from that.
- 13:28Speaker 3: But that's one where we'll be kicking himself because it's like, ah,
- 13:30Speaker 3: this is one of my tracks relative to Mark, and
- 13:32Speaker 3: I've kind of let him off the hook a little
- 13:34Speaker 3: bit here, so you know, we'll obviously talk about her
- 13:36Speaker 3: wrath a little bit later on. But that's another good
- 13:38Speaker 3: Peco track and that's one that he'll definitely keep in
- 13:41Speaker 3: mind for this weekend looking.
- 13:43Speaker 1: At the results. So, yeah, Mark Marquez one Sundays at
- 13:46Speaker 1: Grand Prix, and originally it was a different podium, but
- 13:49Speaker 1: it ended up being Vanyaya in second and Frankie Morbidelli
- 13:53Speaker 1: and third. Now, Frankie, let's touch on him because he
- 13:56Speaker 1: was on the podium. Both we can both racist. Sorry
- 13:59Speaker 1: this weekend. Third in the sprint, third in the main
- 14:01Speaker 1: Grand Prix. I kind of thought I was going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: see Digia up there, but we spoke about his Grand
- 14:07Speaker 1: Prix in his results earlier. Is this Frankie Morbidelli. Is
- 14:12Speaker 1: this him in his element, in his comfort zone. He's
- 14:15Speaker 1: got the team, he's got the bike that he's comfortable on.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Is this kind of where we're seeing that ceiling for
- 14:20Speaker 1: him or do you think he's going to be fighting
- 14:22Speaker 1: further for those racemans and eventually take that as well.
- 14:25Speaker 3: He strikes me as the guy who'll be there to
- 14:27Speaker 3: pick up a podium when the others can't.
- 14:29Speaker 2: For whatever reason.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I think he's you know, he's clearly at a happy
- 14:32Speaker 3: place back riding for Valentino, and he's in a spot
- 14:34Speaker 3: that he likes. But I think in a more normal
- 14:37Speaker 3: race weekend. You if Qatar played out more normally for
- 14:40Speaker 3: the others, you would think that someone like Banaya had
- 14:42Speaker 3: his measure. Alex Marquez probably had his measure, and I
- 14:44Speaker 3: think de jan Antonio was the faster of the VR
- 14:46Speaker 3: forty six bikes. I think did you probably had podium
- 14:48Speaker 3: pace on the Sunday, but had the incident with Alex
- 14:51Speaker 3: Marquez really early and then everything unraveled after that. But
- 14:54Speaker 3: you know, a full credit to Morbidelli. He's put himself
- 14:57Speaker 3: in a position to score these big results this season,
- 14:59Speaker 3: and that's been the criticism of him in the past
- 15:03Speaker 3: couple of years. When he was alongside Juge Martin at Pramac,
- 15:05Speaker 3: the bike was good enough to win the World championship,
- 15:07Speaker 3: and you're thinking, well, if it's good enough for Martine
- 15:09Speaker 3: to win the World Championship on then where's the other guy.
- 15:11Speaker 3: He was never quite in position to capitalize on that.
- 15:14Speaker 3: So you know, he's been on the podium a few
- 15:16Speaker 3: times already this season. He's putting together a really nice season.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I don't know if it's got massive upside though, it
- 15:22Speaker 3: kind of is what it is. He's making the most
- 15:24Speaker 3: out of the opportunities that have presented themselves. Look full
- 15:27Speaker 3: credit to him, and for a guy who, you know,
- 15:29Speaker 3: we don't know what his contractual status is going forward,
- 15:31Speaker 3: he's one of the few that's out at the end
- 15:32Speaker 3: of this year, certainly making a pretty good case to
- 15:36Speaker 3: be retained. And I'm not sure we would have said
- 15:37Speaker 3: that six months ago, because we kind of felt that
- 15:40Speaker 3: maybe it was a bit of like a halfway house
- 15:41Speaker 3: for him, like a bit of a stop gap. Where's
- 15:43Speaker 3: he going to go after this? At the moment, he's
- 15:45Speaker 3: making all the right noises. But I still think within
- 15:48Speaker 3: that team, I still think, to Jane Antonio is the
- 15:50Speaker 3: faster of the two. It just hasn't really worked out
- 15:52Speaker 3: that way so far this season.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So I mentioned Maverick Manalas that and let's talk about
- 15:57Speaker 1: that because roller coaster weekend and just the fact that
- 16:01Speaker 1: a KTM originally was on the podium and then the
- 16:04Speaker 1: hire pressure situation, but Maverick Vanalas crossed the line second
- 16:09Speaker 1: place ahead of Peco Banyaya. Then we find out what
- 16:13Speaker 1: forty plus minutes after the podium that he had the
- 16:16Speaker 1: hire pressure penalty, which relegated Peko Banyay into second. Franco
- 16:20Speaker 1: Morbidelli up into third, and I think it was a
- 16:24Speaker 1: sixteen second penalty second sixteen seconds, so he was demotive.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Back to p. Fourteen, when we looked at post race
- 16:33Speaker 1: debriefs and everything from Maverick, he goes, Okay, it's not
- 16:35Speaker 1: the result what we were hoping for, but the fact
- 16:38Speaker 1: that I was the fastest KTM and I was fighting
- 16:41Speaker 1: with that front group. This is what katm can do.
- 16:45Speaker 1: This is what I want to talk to you about. Okay,
- 16:47Speaker 1: move that high pressure aside. Is Maverick now finding his home?
- 16:52Speaker 1: Is he finding his confidence? Or is this just another
- 16:54Speaker 1: Maverick Vaniella's We're seeing the high of batmav and then
- 16:57Speaker 1: once again it'll be that rollercoaster and flow.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You do ask the impossible questions. I'm not sure Maverick
- 17:03Speaker 3: knows the answer to this question, so I'm not sure
- 17:05Speaker 3: sure how I'm supposed to as well. He's got no idea,
- 17:07Speaker 3: so I don't think anyone's got much of an idea.
- 17:09Speaker 3: But to let you know what I'm actually cooking up here,
- 17:11Speaker 3: I'm actually writing a piece of vinialest to go on
- 17:13Speaker 3: Fox Sports a little bit later in the week, perhaps
- 17:16Speaker 3: on Wednesday, and started diving deep into some stats. He
- 17:19Speaker 3: hadn't been written a lap in a Grand Prix in
- 17:22Speaker 3: better than thirteenth position in the first three rounds of
- 17:25Speaker 3: the season. He spent the entire race in Doha in
- 17:28Speaker 3: the top five, which if that's not the most Maverick
- 17:30Speaker 3: Vinales stat of all time, then I don't know what is.
- 17:33Speaker 3: We know that this guy's high points. He can be
- 17:37Speaker 3: the best rider in Motor GP for about one hour
- 17:40Speaker 3: a year, that's what it feels like, and that he'll
- 17:42Speaker 3: have one weekend where he is absolutely amazing. We only
- 17:46Speaker 3: have to go back to twenty twenty four. The last
- 17:49Speaker 3: non Decati rider to win a Grand Prix was Maverick
- 17:52Speaker 3: Vinales on an Aprilia at Cota. It was over one
- 17:55Speaker 3: year ago and he had one of those weekends where
- 17:58Speaker 3: he absolutely screwed up the start and I think tenth
- 18:00Speaker 3: on the first lap and then past everybody like they
- 18:02Speaker 3: were riding motor three bikes and won that race. And
- 18:04Speaker 3: then you don't see him for two months. You just
- 18:06Speaker 3: forget that he's at the races, so you don't see
- 18:08Speaker 3: him on the coverage because he's buried so far back
- 18:10Speaker 3: in the pack and you look at the classification and go, oh,
- 18:12Speaker 3: Maverick Vinalez was thirteenth.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I forgot about that.
- 18:15Speaker 3: So this is what he is at this point, and
- 18:18Speaker 3: I don't know. I've had this sort of love hate
- 18:20Speaker 3: relationship with the way he goes about it, because I
- 18:22Speaker 3: get so enthusiastic about the good days that I'm like, oh,
- 18:25Speaker 3: come on, like, why aren't these repeatable. I've actually gone
- 18:28Speaker 3: a bit the other way now, and I know that
- 18:30Speaker 3: he's like this wild card of wild cards that one
- 18:33Speaker 3: weekend a year he's probably going to be absolutely amazing,
- 18:36Speaker 3: and it's super fun when it happens because it adds
- 18:37Speaker 3: something to the mix.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But even his.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Peers were surprised about it. You probably saw this in
- 18:42Speaker 3: the post race presser, and it was pretty funny that
- 18:44Speaker 3: Mark Marquez had said, Oh, I saw this orange KTM
- 18:47Speaker 3: come down the inside about halfway through the race, and
- 18:49Speaker 3: I figured, oh, that's Pedro Acosta, and then I looked
- 18:52Speaker 3: to one side went oh, it's Maverick. Who knew like
- 18:54Speaker 3: he was absolutely shocked and was just so impressed with
- 18:57Speaker 3: how good Maverick was in that race. But he was
- 19:01Speaker 3: almost too fast for his own good. Because I did
- 19:04Speaker 3: some digging with this with this whole tire pressure stuff.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Obviously you've got to be above a certain low low
- 19:11Speaker 3: mark of tire pressure for the sixty percent of the
- 19:13Speaker 3: race distance. Katy m clearly didn't expect him to be
- 19:16Speaker 3: up to the front because they set his tire pressures
- 19:18Speaker 3: to a point that he could run in the pack
- 19:19Speaker 3: and still be within that threshold. It was when he
- 19:22Speaker 3: got to the front of the race for five laps
- 19:23Speaker 3: that he's front tire cooled down that the tire pressure
- 19:26Speaker 3: went below the threshold. So even surprised his own team
- 19:28Speaker 3: by being too fast for his own good, and that's
- 19:30Speaker 3: why he basically caught the penalty. So it's so funny
- 19:33Speaker 3: with the way these things work out. This tire rule
- 19:35Speaker 3: is convoluted and annoying and all of those things. But
- 19:38Speaker 3: he was so good that he'd defied what his own
- 19:41Speaker 3: team expected of him because he was up the front
- 19:43Speaker 3: for five laps. So yeah, a very Maverick videal is
- 19:46Speaker 3: way to a get a podium and then be lose it.
- 19:48Speaker 3: But he wasn't super upset after the race because he's like, well,
- 19:52Speaker 3: we showed the pace, this was fantastic, and I think
- 19:55Speaker 3: he was still going to hit herve pontchareal up for
- 19:57Speaker 3: his podium bonus as well, so you know, second across
- 20:00Speaker 3: lot and so where's my little percentage kicker for being
- 20:02Speaker 3: on the podium. Thanks, But I don't know about you,
- 20:04Speaker 3: but this weekend at her Rest, it's a track where
- 20:06Speaker 3: he's gone quite well in the past. He could be
- 20:08Speaker 3: on the podium agin or it could be fourteenth, and
- 20:10Speaker 3: I'd probably just shrug my shoulders and go sure, because
- 20:13Speaker 3: you just don't know what you're going to get from him.
- 20:14Speaker 3: But it was certainly fun to watch though.
- 20:17Speaker 1: It was and it made the race exciting to see
- 20:19Speaker 1: a KTM. And like you said, I thought it was
- 20:21Speaker 1: Pedro Acosta originally, and even reading you know articles, Herve
- 20:25Speaker 1: Panchoal was going, you know, before everyone was Pedro Acosta's
- 20:29Speaker 1: KTM's golden boy. But now they're going to start looking
- 20:32Speaker 1: at Maverick. Well maybe they're going to start looking at
- 20:35Speaker 1: Maverick for some of it, but like you said, it'll
- 20:37Speaker 1: be why is he back down in fourteenth or why
- 20:39Speaker 1: is he fighting for another podium? At Herrest? This weekend
- 20:42Speaker 1: is typical. Maverick is nice and it's exciting, and it
- 20:45Speaker 1: added a change of scenery to what I thought we
- 20:48Speaker 1: were going to experience this weekend, which was Hope Well,
- 20:51Speaker 1: a Mark Marquez, a Mark Alex Marquez, and a Peko
- 20:55Speaker 1: Baangnaya somewhere in those three and all of a sudden
- 20:57Speaker 1: you have a KTM up there. But then we also
- 21:00Speaker 1: had Joan Zako who finished fourth a Sunday's Grand Prix,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and Quita obviously with the penalty and everything from Maverick Vignalez.
- 21:09Speaker 1: But now we're starting to see the other manufacturers make
- 21:12Speaker 1: their way through. Joan Zacho. I spoke to him Akata.
- 21:16Speaker 1: He looks confident, he looks like he's jelling. He's comfortable,
- 21:21Speaker 1: He's in his element there, and we've spoken about this
- 21:23Speaker 1: on the pod. There must be something in the team
- 21:27Speaker 1: dynamic of being the Elsier, the family team as they
- 21:31Speaker 1: call it, even though it's the privateer, but the satellite team.
- 21:35Speaker 1: It just seems to work for him. We're seeing the
- 21:37Speaker 1: same thing with Jack Miller, where they just seem to
- 21:39Speaker 1: be that bit more comfortable that they can then perform.
- 21:42Speaker 1: What have you heard from Zacho? Is this something that
- 21:44Speaker 1: we're going to start seeing him fighting close so? Or
- 21:46Speaker 1: was this another we can like Argentina where it just
- 21:49Speaker 1: seemed to suit him in that bike no.
- 21:52Speaker 3: I just think he has been really, really good this season.
- 21:55Speaker 3: I think he's the perfect guy at the perfect time
- 21:58Speaker 3: for not any Elsie but maybe that Honda project, because
- 22:02Speaker 3: I mean.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Let's face it, it's been so bad since Mark left.
- 22:05Speaker 3: It's been bad even while Mark was there, when he
- 22:07Speaker 3: was sort of competing between surgeries, and they've got this
- 22:10Speaker 3: situation with the factory team where the team looks different
- 22:13Speaker 3: because you don't have the Repsol sponsorship anymore. Juan Mier
- 22:16Speaker 3: is crashing all of the time, and if he's not,
- 22:18Speaker 3: then the poor guy's sick, like he was in Katar
- 22:20Speaker 3: and had to sit out the sprint. Luca Marine is
- 22:22Speaker 3: out of contract at the end of this season. He's
- 22:25Speaker 3: the guy who wants to understand what it is that
- 22:27Speaker 3: he's riding and how it all works before he pushes
- 22:29Speaker 3: it to that next degree. Zarko is a guy who's
- 22:32Speaker 3: going to wring the neck of whatever it is that
- 22:34Speaker 3: he rides. And I think you approach this a little
- 22:37Speaker 3: bit differently when you're him because he's been a major
- 22:40Speaker 3: GP a long time. He had to wait so long
- 22:41Speaker 3: for that first win that came here in Australia, obviously,
- 22:44Speaker 3: but now he's the oldest guy on the grid. He's
- 22:47Speaker 3: not doing like every race like it's potentially his last race,
- 22:50Speaker 3: but you know the clock only you know far the
- 22:52Speaker 3: time is undefeated, as the saying goes, and you can
- 22:54Speaker 3: only hang around for so long. He's making a really
- 22:56Speaker 3: good case that he should be retained by Hold, and
- 23:00Speaker 3: there's been some discussion. It's like, well, why wouldn't they
- 23:03Speaker 3: put him in the factory team? Like he's their best
- 23:04Speaker 3: performing writer so far, And that's not normally a conversation
- 23:09Speaker 3: you would have with a guy getting towards like the
- 23:11Speaker 3: twilight of his career in terms of age. But I
- 23:13Speaker 3: don't know about you. I don't see any sort of
- 23:16Speaker 3: drop off in his determination or his ability to push
- 23:19Speaker 3: the limits. He's still one of the hardest guys in
- 23:21Speaker 3: will to will combat there is in the field, like
- 23:24Speaker 3: Jack Miller always talks about, you know, when you're at
- 23:26Speaker 3: a fight with Zarko, you know it's going to be
- 23:27Speaker 3: gloves off. So he you know, you would think, well,
- 23:30Speaker 3: maybe he's starting to wind down. I'd almost go the
- 23:32Speaker 3: other way and say, right now, if you're Honda, why
- 23:35Speaker 3: wouldn't you throw him in the factory team if you
- 23:37Speaker 3: have a chance if you're looking for a potentially a stopgap,
- 23:40Speaker 3: because he's getting the most out of.
- 23:41Speaker 2: What he's getting.
- 23:42Speaker 3: He is a very very determined guy. We know the
- 23:45Speaker 3: way he goes racing, and you mentioned before that sort
- 23:49Speaker 3: of family, small privateer type team. I think that brings
- 23:52Speaker 3: out the best in someone like him. I think Zarko
- 23:55Speaker 3: reacts better when he knows that he's sort of loved
- 23:57Speaker 3: and he's got someone with an arm a round his
- 23:59Speaker 3: shoulder and they're buying into what he brings. And that's
- 24:01Speaker 3: Luccio to a t, isn't it really?
- 24:03Speaker 1: So?
- 24:04Speaker 3: Yeah, super impressive. Yeah, he got promoted up a spot
- 24:06Speaker 3: because Finale's got punted down in the classification because of
- 24:09Speaker 3: the penalty. But he was right up there the entire race.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And yeah, Honda's in the top five. Hey, we've not
- 24:14Speaker 3: said that for a while.
- 24:15Speaker 1: You mentioned they're about putting him in the factory team.
- 24:18Speaker 1: The I keep wanting to say, repsal Honda. Now that's it,
- 24:22Speaker 1: take a shot whenever we say Reps, wonder Castro Honda HRC.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I've heard the rumors and I wanted to ask you
- 24:28Speaker 1: about this, the rumors of Pedro Acosta potentially going to
- 24:32Speaker 1: Honda next year, and then we're hearing the rumors about
- 24:35Speaker 1: top Rack Rasgalioglu also making that move. For twenty twenty seven,
- 24:40Speaker 1: let's talk about Pedro and the rumors of him going
- 24:42Speaker 1: to factory Honda, because you mentioned Marini's contracts. You at
- 24:46Speaker 1: the end of this year me is still crashing or
- 24:48Speaker 1: is ill? Is that a possibility? Is that something you think?
- 24:53Speaker 3: I think it's got more to do with what Katims
- 24:56Speaker 3: show than what Honda does, because I think we can
- 24:58Speaker 3: see Honda's clearly climbing out of the basement. Now it's
- 25:01Speaker 3: a long climb. They've been a long, long, long way down.
- 25:04Speaker 3: And we talk about this on a previous podcast where
- 25:06Speaker 3: when Honda had Mark Marquez, he almost sort of flattered
- 25:10Speaker 3: the machinery where they thought that maybe it wasn't as
- 25:12Speaker 3: much of a problem as it actually was. I think
- 25:14Speaker 3: once you took a complete superstar off the bike and
- 25:17Speaker 3: put a very good motor GP right on it, you
- 25:19Speaker 3: could see their results just went down so badly. So
- 25:22Speaker 3: they're still climbing out of the basement, but they are
- 25:24Speaker 3: clearly climbing, and we know with Honda, there's no shortage
- 25:26Speaker 3: of ambition, there's no shortage of budget, and I think
- 25:29Speaker 3: that's the key thing if you've read some of the
- 25:32Speaker 3: reports out of the Spanish press. Obviously, if Honda were
- 25:34Speaker 3: to get a Costa, they have to pay out his
- 25:36Speaker 3: KTM contract to get him out. That's going to be
- 25:39Speaker 3: not the work of a moment. And I wonder the
- 25:42Speaker 3: way I look at the ECSTA thing is that if
- 25:44Speaker 3: he's frustrated with KTM not being able to take the
- 25:47Speaker 3: next step and be ready, you would have to say
- 25:50Speaker 3: on balance that KTM's further up the food chain than
- 25:52Speaker 3: Honda are right now. So if you're putting a cost
- 25:55Speaker 3: on a bike that's not necessarily capable of achieving great things, now,
- 25:59Speaker 3: is it to be the same frustration, but just on
- 26:01Speaker 3: a different colored bike and a bit further back on
- 26:03Speaker 3: the grid. So I'm not sure. I don't know if
- 26:06Speaker 3: Honda's ready for a rider like a cost but I'll
- 26:08Speaker 3: put the end of that sense I put the word
- 26:10Speaker 3: yet because I can see a pathway where Honda might be.
- 26:13Speaker 3: It might just be a little bit premature. I don't
- 26:15Speaker 3: think Honda is going to be down in this position
- 26:18Speaker 3: for too much longer. It still might take a couple
- 26:20Speaker 3: of years and perhaps that rule reset that I talk
- 26:22Speaker 3: about in twenty seven might be the time that they
- 26:24Speaker 3: really start to step forward. So could I see a
- 26:27Speaker 3: cost on a Honder in the future. Yeah, look, possibly,
- 26:29Speaker 3: but maybe not yet. That might be one with a
- 26:31Speaker 3: longer lens. And the thing with Pedro Costa is atly
- 26:33Speaker 3: twenty one years old, so he's got the longer leand
- 26:35Speaker 3: he's got the longest possible lens. He could be on
- 26:38Speaker 3: this grip for another twelve years longer than that if
- 26:41Speaker 3: he wants to be. He's one of those guys. So yeah,
- 26:43Speaker 3: I could see a Honda in his future, but perhaps
- 26:45Speaker 3: not yet. But the look the top rack stuff, I
- 26:49Speaker 3: feel like I've been burned by this one so many
- 26:51Speaker 3: times because every time it comes up as a potential topic, go, oh,
- 26:53Speaker 3: that would be interesting, that would be fun, that would
- 26:55Speaker 3: be box office for Moto GP. I've almost got a
- 26:57Speaker 3: blanket banner myself here from talking about or writing about
- 27:01Speaker 3: top rack until it actually happens, because I feel I've
- 27:04Speaker 3: written or talked about that, Oh that'd be interesting if
- 27:06Speaker 3: it happens story, and then it never does. So yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 3: I've decided to keep the Q in the rack on
- 27:11Speaker 3: that one. So look, if he ever comes to Motor GP.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Then happy days. I'll have lots to say about it,
- 27:15Speaker 3: but for the time being, it's like, can you just
- 27:17Speaker 3: prove it first and actually get there and then we'll
- 27:18Speaker 3: discuss it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah, it just continually he's coming in
- 27:22Speaker 1: the headlines of top Rack, Moto GP, and then some manufacturer,
- 27:25Speaker 1: and then a month later it'll be the different manufacturer.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But the Honda thing I thought was interesting was I
- 27:31Speaker 1: don't want to get too much into top rack, but
- 27:33Speaker 1: the fact of him having to go to Honda World
- 27:35Speaker 1: Superbike for a season then go to Honda Moto GP.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I thought, oh, that's quite an interesting move if that's
- 27:42Speaker 1: something that they would even consider, But.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Sounds better on paper that it does in reality, I
- 27:47Speaker 3: reckon because if he was riding the Honder in World
- 27:49Speaker 3: Superbikes after about four rounds, it'd be like, what am
- 27:51Speaker 3: I doing on this thing? And you know, bike riders
- 27:53Speaker 3: aren't the most patient at the best of time, So
- 27:55Speaker 3: to ask someone to sort of you know, can you
- 27:57Speaker 3: just have like a bit of an annoying year doing
- 27:59Speaker 3: that and then will promote you? Like that's going to
- 28:01Speaker 3: get pretty old pretty fast, isn't it?
- 28:02Speaker 1: Oh? Exactly exactly, But let's talk about the rookie of
- 28:06Speaker 1: the weekend, Furman Alsigert qualified eighth and then what was
- 28:12Speaker 1: he top five in both the sprint and the main
- 28:15Speaker 1: Grand Prix. I'm just looking at how to get fourth
- 28:17Speaker 1: in the sprint. Yeah, once again, Matt, I'm going to
- 28:20Speaker 1: ask you this question. Was this just a circuit that
- 28:22Speaker 1: seemed to suit that you caddies, or is this Albiget
- 28:25Speaker 1: now finding his feed in with the big boys and
- 28:28Speaker 1: he's finally getting to grips with this is Moto GP
- 28:31Speaker 1: and how he can fight for that top five finish.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I think both think Well, is name me a circuit
- 28:36Speaker 3: that's not ad Caddy circuit Right now, they're all du
- 28:39Speaker 3: Caddy circuits. But I've been impressed with how quickly he
- 28:42Speaker 3: started to look legit because at the start of the
- 28:44Speaker 3: season three, preseason testing, in those first couple of races,
- 28:47Speaker 3: it's like, oh, this guy looks a bit off the pace.
- 28:49Speaker 3: And he had that really weird Motor two career where
- 28:51Speaker 3: he was amazing, and then he got signed to Moto GP,
- 28:54Speaker 3: and then last year in Motor two it was like, oh,
- 28:56Speaker 3: you know, I remember we had Matt Burt on the
- 28:58Speaker 3: podcast last year and you know, you say, you wonder
- 29:00Speaker 3: if Kady would like to sort of take a mulligan
- 29:02Speaker 3: on that decision and throw it back in the.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Pond a little bit.
- 29:05Speaker 3: The race of his improvement's been the impressive thing for me,
- 29:08Speaker 3: because you know, he's super young, and he's super inexperienced,
- 29:11Speaker 3: and you see the complexity of these bikes these days,
- 29:14Speaker 3: with all the systems and the way they need to
- 29:16Speaker 3: be ridden and ride height devices and this, that and
- 29:19Speaker 3: the next thing. It's not a small step at all
- 29:21Speaker 3: from Moto two to Motor GP. There's not too many
- 29:24Speaker 3: rookies around. There's a lot going on. You're doing flyways
- 29:27Speaker 3: for the first four rounds. It's fairly chaotic. I just
- 29:30Speaker 3: think the rider he was in Katar compared to where
- 29:32Speaker 3: he was in Thailand four races, four rounds earlier. He's
- 29:36Speaker 3: come a long way in a super short time. And
- 29:38Speaker 3: we know he's on a really, really good bike. But
- 29:40Speaker 3: he's not just some sort of also round. Now he's
- 29:43Speaker 3: a guy we have to factor in, and he's still
- 29:45Speaker 3: going to do rookie young guy Motor GP. You know,
- 29:49Speaker 3: novice mistakes like he did in Austin when he came
- 29:51Speaker 3: charging up behind Jack Miller, and then promptly crashed when
- 29:53Speaker 3: he had a top five on the table. But the
- 29:55Speaker 3: rate of his improvements is the thing that's impressed me.
- 29:58Speaker 3: And look, there's sixty on the green. If you're on
- 30:00Speaker 3: one of those bikes, then you're in with a good
- 30:02Speaker 3: shot of winning some silverware by the end of the year.
- 30:04Speaker 3: But it would not surprise me at all if we
- 30:06Speaker 3: see him now some things that have to go wrong
- 30:08Speaker 3: for other people. I could see him finishing on the
- 30:10Speaker 3: podium this year because we know he's got the right
- 30:12Speaker 3: bike to do it. So what he's seeing is we
- 30:14Speaker 3: don't know. He's still so young. But I've been impressed
- 30:16Speaker 3: by just he seems to be a fast learner, which
- 30:19Speaker 3: you know when you're coming into Moto GP, and particularly
- 30:22Speaker 3: after that first couple of rounds where everyone's talking about
- 30:24Speaker 3: Ayagura as being the gun rookie, Aldegarez really kind of
- 30:27Speaker 3: settled in and he's been super impressive, I think.
- 30:30Speaker 1: As well, coming to your first nighttime race and we
- 30:33Speaker 1: know there's only the one nighttime race that they have
- 30:36Speaker 1: on the calendar, but also talking to Alex Rins and
- 30:38Speaker 1: he's saying it still takes time to adjust. You still
- 30:40Speaker 1: see the shadows, you still see all that. So I
- 30:42Speaker 1: think for Feman, like you said, to have progressed so
- 30:45Speaker 1: far and doing that on the first nighttime race on
- 30:47Speaker 1: a Moto GP bike, it is that step forward that
- 30:50Speaker 1: he needs. And I think having Alex Marquez, who was
- 30:53Speaker 1: so far up the championship, was leading it right coming
- 30:56Speaker 1: into this weekend, now Foman is starting to show, you know,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I do to be here, look at what I can do.
- 31:02Speaker 3: It's a weird format too, Katar, and you would have
- 31:04Speaker 3: found that when you were there, because the whole race
- 31:07Speaker 3: weekend for Motor GP, like half of it's in daylight
- 31:09Speaker 3: and half of it isn't. Yeah, And I keep wondering,
- 31:11Speaker 3: you know, particularly talking about rookies trying to get used
- 31:13Speaker 3: to racing under the lights of the first time. I
- 31:15Speaker 3: almost wonder if that weekend format needs a flip, like
- 31:19Speaker 3: do we need to have the sprint on like Saturday
- 31:20Speaker 3: morning and then have qualifying at night because it seems
- 31:23Speaker 3: weird that you're qualifying for a race that's happening like
- 31:26Speaker 3: thirty hours later. You're qualifying in the daytime and you're
- 31:29Speaker 3: racing at night the next day. That's always a bit
- 31:31Speaker 3: weird for me. The whole Kitar thing because practice and
- 31:33Speaker 3: the way that the weekend sort of shakes out, the
- 31:36Speaker 3: general cadence of a weekend is weird because you've got
- 31:38Speaker 3: totally different track conditions and everything else going on. I
- 31:41Speaker 3: wonder if there's like a one off switch that needs
- 31:43Speaker 3: to be for that, But that's for people with far
- 31:46Speaker 3: more important jobs than me to decide. But you were
- 31:48Speaker 3: on the ground there was it a bit of a
- 31:49Speaker 3: weird vibe because you've got you know, you've got this
- 31:52Speaker 3: qualifying thing happening on Saturday morning. It's almost like you're
- 31:54Speaker 3: a totally different track, isn't it.
- 31:56Speaker 1: It is? It does feel like a totally different track,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and they do say that it funny. We were just
- 32:00Speaker 1: talking about the timing and I just want to go
- 32:02Speaker 1: back to I was talking to my brother when I
- 32:04Speaker 1: came back from Qatar, Chris Famulan for those who are
- 32:07Speaker 1: new here, and he was saying that when he used
- 32:10Speaker 1: to race it, and they'd race at night, they'd actually
- 32:12Speaker 1: race like two am in the morning or three am
- 32:14Speaker 1: in the morning. Yeah, the Jew and the Mist, because
- 32:17Speaker 1: so they do their practice and the qualifying when it
- 32:19Speaker 1: was dark, and then the Jew and the Mist would
- 32:22Speaker 1: sit down from the desert, they obviously would cool down.
- 32:25Speaker 1: The track would actually get really quite damp. He was
- 32:27Speaker 1: saying he actually crashed coming into pit lane once back
- 32:30Speaker 1: on Suzuki because of how much it is, So that's
- 32:32Speaker 1: why they moved everything back. And then you have the
- 32:35Speaker 1: trouble of the track temperature doesn't change all that much
- 32:39Speaker 1: because it is still really hot there. But you can
- 32:42Speaker 1: see as the sun starts to set, you see it
- 32:45Speaker 1: almost like the dust come in like the sets, So
- 32:47Speaker 1: it changes a lot, And a couple of them would say, yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 1: the track would feel really dirty as the time would change.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But then like I talked to like Fabio Coudro and
- 32:56Speaker 1: he's like, to me, it just feels the same. I'm
- 32:59Speaker 1: just doing the same. So I think it depends on
- 33:01Speaker 1: the writer as well and how they handle it. But
- 33:04Speaker 1: I would think for a rookie that would be a
- 33:07Speaker 1: lot to adjust for.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Well, he's got a lot going on anyway, because he's
- 33:11Speaker 3: getting used to the sprint format and you've got you
- 33:13Speaker 3: know what, the way practice has become now with Moto GP,
- 33:16Speaker 3: that last ten minutes of Friday practice has almost become
- 33:19Speaker 3: what we're sort of referring to as Q zero.
- 33:21Speaker 2: These days.
- 33:22Speaker 3: It's like the qualifying session before the qualifying session. So
- 33:25Speaker 3: you've got that going on. You've got two part qualifying thing,
- 33:27Speaker 3: a sprint race. There's a lot for rookies to get
- 33:29Speaker 3: used to. And I just think the thing with alther
- 33:32Speaker 3: Gear is he seems, you know, what, are we the
- 33:34Speaker 3: end of nearly the end of April. You look at
- 33:36Speaker 3: where he's come from the start of February to now,
- 33:38Speaker 3: he's made super progress. Now it helps that you're on
- 33:41Speaker 3: an awesome bike. Let's not now makes your bones about it,
- 33:43Speaker 3: but he's making the best of what he's got. And yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 3: I can see him becoming much more of a factor
- 33:49Speaker 3: towards the sharp end, or at least determining what happens
- 33:51Speaker 3: in podium places for the rest of the season if
- 33:53Speaker 3: this continues for him.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Let's talk about the other rookie, and you mentioned that
- 33:57Speaker 1: I age now what I wanted to ask you with eyes.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I've heard some rumors going around on social media that
- 34:03Speaker 1: I is potentially going to step in to replace Jorge
- 34:07Speaker 1: Martin while the injury and everything's going. What's your thoughts
- 34:11Speaker 1: on that? What have you heard? Because I also feel
- 34:14Speaker 1: like that's a lot to put on a rookie. Yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 1: we saw him exceed expectations in pre season and testing.
- 34:19Speaker 1: But looking at the results from this weekend in a
- 34:23Speaker 1: Sunday's race, he was fifteenth. Okay, so he got a point.
- 34:26Speaker 1: But we saw him so well at the beginning of
- 34:28Speaker 1: the season. Now we're still trying to see him finding
- 34:30Speaker 1: his feet. Do you think he's the person to step
- 34:33Speaker 1: in to help replace and I'm seeing that with like
- 34:35Speaker 1: the air. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Look, it depends how long Martin is out, and it's
- 34:39Speaker 3: been some discussion that he might be out for twill
- 34:41Speaker 3: three months. And if that's the case, if we're not
- 34:44Speaker 3: going to see Martin until almost the tail end of
- 34:46Speaker 3: the European season, I actually don't mind it for a
- 34:49Speaker 3: Prillier because it's one of those things that, well, you know,
- 34:52Speaker 3: there's potential upside there as opposed to just sort of
- 34:55Speaker 3: running up and down on the spot for the next
- 34:57Speaker 3: couple of months. Because we've seen Lorenzo Savadori step in.
- 35:00Speaker 3: He's a test rider, he's not a front running motor
- 35:03Speaker 3: GP rider.
- 35:03Speaker 2: There's nothing to suggest that he's there.
- 35:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't mind a Prillier having a gur up in
- 35:08Speaker 3: that top team for a couple of reasons. A. It
- 35:10Speaker 3: gives you a more dependable points scoring option on the
- 35:13Speaker 3: second bike. B. It kind of helps you benchmark Marco
- 35:16Speaker 3: Betzeki a little bit, because I've been pretty underwhelmed with
- 35:20Speaker 3: what Bozeki has.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Done so far on that bike.
- 35:22Speaker 3: He was good in the preseason, but we've not really
- 35:24Speaker 3: seen it when it comes to the actual championship so far,
- 35:27Speaker 3: and the fact that a guru is on the whole
- 35:29Speaker 3: doing better. I think you'd learn a lot about both
- 35:32Speaker 3: riders if you put them together in the same garage
- 35:34Speaker 3: for a couple of months.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And I think.
- 35:36Speaker 3: If it was a race or two at the start
- 35:37Speaker 3: of the year when you Martin was going to be back,
- 35:39Speaker 3: probably round three, round four, that's not a long enough
- 35:42Speaker 3: period to perhaps put a guru up in the top team.
- 35:45Speaker 3: But if save Martin's going to miss the next i
- 35:47Speaker 3: don't know, six seven rounds or something, if you're a prillier,
- 35:50Speaker 3: then what have you got to lose? As opposed to
- 35:52Speaker 3: having Savadori in the factory team and he's basically there
- 35:55Speaker 3: to test parts and you won't see him at the
- 35:57Speaker 3: front of races, why not put a guru in there,
- 36:00Speaker 3: give him some more responsibility and find out whether he
- 36:02Speaker 3: sinks or swims in that sort of situation, and you
- 36:05Speaker 3: can have Savadora down on the trackhouse bike and it's
- 36:07Speaker 3: not as much of an issue. So I don't mind
- 36:10Speaker 3: it as an idea, but I think the validity of
- 36:13Speaker 3: that will be once we get an idea as to
- 36:16Speaker 3: how long Martin is likely to be out for. If
- 36:19Speaker 3: it is three months and he's going to miss pretty
- 36:22Speaker 3: much half the season to two thirds of the season,
- 36:24Speaker 3: why not because it's kind of nothing to lose, is there?
- 36:27Speaker 1: Well, exactly right. I mean, I think it's good. We've
- 36:30Speaker 1: seen what I can do, especially he is in that
- 36:32Speaker 1: track house team, so it is very different dynamic and everything,
- 36:37Speaker 1: I think, But for him to step into the factory
- 36:40Speaker 1: role essentially air quotes once again, I mean him alongside
- 36:44Speaker 1: Marco Badzecki. I think that could be a really good
- 36:47Speaker 1: team together because they are very different people, very different riders,
- 36:50Speaker 1: and I feel like how they would attack the situation
- 36:52Speaker 1: with the development of the Aprilia. I think it would
- 36:54Speaker 1: be a good teamwork.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Well, and I think they're coming at it from very
- 36:59Speaker 3: different angles. Have to remember, Bozeki is as an experience
- 37:02Speaker 3: with the Aprilia as a Gura is because he'd never
- 37:04Speaker 3: raced one before this season either, So it's not like
- 37:07Speaker 3: you're putting an inexperienced guy with an experienced guy. They're
- 37:09Speaker 3: both in a similar situation. I think you'd actually learn
- 37:12Speaker 3: a lot about both riders by making that move, not
- 37:15Speaker 3: just a gura because it it'd be interesting to see
- 37:17Speaker 3: how Buzeki reacted to that, and is there a natural
- 37:20Speaker 3: leader among the two who steers the development direction of
- 37:22Speaker 3: the bike. They're not fighting for wins right now, let's
- 37:25Speaker 3: be honest. Because they're not riding in to Caddy. You
- 37:27Speaker 3: may as well take a risk with this because it's
- 37:29Speaker 3: kind of a It's like a low risk, high reward
- 37:32Speaker 3: sort of situation as far as.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I see it, And that's what we love about motogps
- 37:36Speaker 1: because you never know what's going to happen, the twizs
- 37:38Speaker 1: and the turns and guess what. We had one weekend
- 37:41Speaker 1: off which you guys didn't get to hear from us.
- 37:43Speaker 1: But now we're back because we're going to Harath this weekend. Unfortunately,
- 37:48Speaker 1: we're not going to hereth we'll be watching it from
- 37:50Speaker 1: our sofas at home in Australia. But motor GP is
- 37:53Speaker 1: going to Herrath. So let's look forward to that thinking
- 37:58Speaker 1: of last year. I'm trying to rack my brain. Remind
- 38:01Speaker 1: me it was quite wet, wasn't it on the Friday?
- 38:02Speaker 1: So they didn't actually have a good set up.
- 38:04Speaker 2: On the Friday.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Look, her ref last week from last year for me
- 38:08Speaker 3: was that was that first Mark Marquez Pekovan flashpoint with
- 38:14Speaker 3: Mark being on a do caddy. Awesome grand Prix, like
- 38:17Speaker 3: one of the absolute best Grand Prix of last year,
- 38:20Speaker 3: and unusual in that Mark got the bloody nose in
- 38:23Speaker 3: a fight head to head with somebody, which is not
- 38:25Speaker 3: something you see very otem Mark and Vanya had that
- 38:28Speaker 3: awesome battle across those last few laps, and look, we
- 38:31Speaker 3: know Peco was on a better machine. We definitely knew that,
- 38:34Speaker 3: and it was just nice to see Mark fighting up
- 38:35Speaker 3: the front again. But you know, we didn't even know
- 38:38Speaker 3: at that point those two were going to be teammates
- 38:40Speaker 3: for the following year, because they all kicked off at
- 38:41Speaker 3: Magello a couple of months down the track. But that
- 38:43Speaker 3: was so interesting last year where you had the guy
- 38:47Speaker 3: won the previous two championships against the guy who had
- 38:50Speaker 3: kind of abdicated the throne a little bit, you know,
- 38:52Speaker 3: because he'd been so beaten up for the last few years.
- 38:55Speaker 3: It was a super intense flashpoint between those two Mark
- 38:59Speaker 3: at home Pecko sort of you know, winning one on
- 39:02Speaker 3: away territory. But the intensity of that fight, and the
- 39:06Speaker 3: thing I loved about it last year was that it
- 39:08Speaker 3: was just on the side of being accepted and I
- 39:10Speaker 3: say just like literally finger and thumb together and it
- 39:14Speaker 3: was millimeters away from being a little bit over the top.
- 39:16Speaker 3: But Peco gave as good as he got, and we
- 39:19Speaker 3: know how fierce marks in these head to head battles,
- 39:21Speaker 3: so that was a real feather at his cap that
- 39:23Speaker 3: day to sort of, you know, stare in the eye
- 39:25Speaker 3: of motor TP. He's giant and not buckle. He really
- 39:28Speaker 3: held his ground there. So I would love to think
- 39:31Speaker 3: that that would be the case again this year, but
- 39:35Speaker 3: we've already seen that Marco has definitely taken a step
- 39:37Speaker 3: up since he's gone to that factory team. It's a
- 39:39Speaker 3: weekend for Peco to stand his ground a little bit.
- 39:42Speaker 3: I think he's the guy who won there last year.
- 39:44Speaker 3: We know how he won. It's probably going to be
- 39:47Speaker 3: a Ducati track, because every track, as I said before,
- 39:50Speaker 3: is a Ducatti track, But I wouldn't mind a reprisal
- 39:53Speaker 3: of those two going camera and tongs up the front
- 39:55Speaker 3: for the Grand Prix again because it'd be pretty good
- 39:57Speaker 3: TV for us, wouldn't it. Oh?
- 39:58Speaker 1: Definitely, And I think you know he's all that in guitar.
- 40:00Speaker 1: The racing was really good and it was exciting. Again,
- 40:03Speaker 1: it wasn't just Marquez getting up front and taking the
- 40:05Speaker 1: lead straight away, so hopefully we can see that. But
- 40:08Speaker 1: this is what then, I'm thinking, Okay, we know it's
- 40:10Speaker 1: going to be a Mark Marquez, hopefully it's a Peco
- 40:12Speaker 1: Bagno and battling it out. What about the rest? Do
- 40:15Speaker 1: you think we'll see Aldiga, who were just talking about
- 40:17Speaker 1: close to the front? Is this and Alex Marquerez coming
- 40:20Speaker 1: back to fight, maybe regaining his P two or is
- 40:23Speaker 1: it going to be one of the VR forty six machines.
- 40:26Speaker 3: You've given me Option A, B and C, so I'm
- 40:28Speaker 3: going to do what I do in pick Option D.
- 40:29Speaker 3: I'm just going to make one up here. I'm super
- 40:32Speaker 3: curious to see Yamaha this weekend because her read is
- 40:36Speaker 3: one of those tracks that it's not just about horsepower, right,
- 40:38Speaker 3: It's not one of those tracks with a massive one
- 40:40Speaker 3: case straight. You've got the front straight and the back
- 40:42Speaker 3: straight down into what is now the Danny Padroza carder.
- 40:45Speaker 2: I've almost called a drysack there.
- 40:47Speaker 3: It's not a track that rewards just straight horsepower, right
- 40:51Speaker 3: because you've not got these huge long point and squirt straights.
- 40:54Speaker 3: It's a flowing circle with that particular layout that's still
- 40:57Speaker 3: in Yamaha's wheelhouse, right. And we know that Katura has
- 41:00Speaker 3: been good there previously. We know Jack Miller has been
- 41:02Speaker 3: good there. He has a good record at her Reath generally.
- 41:04Speaker 2: So I'll be.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Curious to see what happens with Yamaha because you look
- 41:08Speaker 3: at the last two tracks. Guitar's got that one and
- 41:10Speaker 3: a bit k front straight. Austin's got that straight that
- 41:13Speaker 3: you can't even see the end of because it's so long,
- 41:14Speaker 3: And that's where you see the Yamahas might be in
- 41:17Speaker 3: a good position and they just get passed by decatties
- 41:19Speaker 3: like they're riding in a different category. So that's not
- 41:22Speaker 3: as much of a factor. A somewhere like her Reth
- 41:24Speaker 3: that's much more of a flowing traditional track. Yamaha has
- 41:28Speaker 3: been a bit.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Up and down.
- 41:29Speaker 3: I mean, Quaturo has been good on occasions. Jack Miller
- 41:31Speaker 3: was fantastic at Austin and had just the most forgettable
- 41:34Speaker 3: Doha weekend of all time for a million different reasons.
- 41:37Speaker 3: But I wouldn't be surprised to see them more in
- 41:40Speaker 3: the mix this weekend, just simply because I think it's
- 41:42Speaker 3: a track layout that suits them a lot more and
- 41:45Speaker 3: it's one of those you know, over a full Grand
- 41:47Speaker 3: Prix distance, it might be a bit of a stretch,
- 41:49Speaker 3: but if someone like Quaduro can qualify quite well, he's
- 41:53Speaker 3: the guy who could be fighting for something meaningful in
- 41:55Speaker 3: the sprint perhaps, And then you look at someone like Jack,
- 41:58Speaker 3: he's got would record that his last Scranpery podium was
- 42:01Speaker 3: at Hareth when he was at KTM a couple of
- 42:03Speaker 3: years back, so he's got some good results there. He
- 42:06Speaker 3: was very much looking forward to get there a because
- 42:08Speaker 3: he loves the place and be he could not wait
- 42:10Speaker 3: to get out of Doha because it was the complete
- 42:12Speaker 3: disaster of him having food poisoning and choosing the wrong
- 42:15Speaker 3: tie for the sprint and then having some random thing
- 42:17Speaker 3: happened to him in the race and it just never
- 42:19Speaker 3: happened for him. So he'll be keen to get there
- 42:21Speaker 3: Kwaturo should be pretty strong, and I think Yamaha generally
- 42:24Speaker 3: seems to be this weekend. A team that we might
- 42:26Speaker 3: see fighting more up the front is.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Miguel Lavera making the return to this weekend in hereth
- 42:31Speaker 1: or Yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 3: TBC haven't announced one way or the other yet whether
- 42:34Speaker 3: it's going to be Augusto Fernanez or Olivera.
- 42:36Speaker 2: And as you know, Olivera was in.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Qatar visiting the Pramat garage. Still looks pretty sore and
- 42:42Speaker 3: beaten up. So we're now in this European part of
- 42:45Speaker 3: the season where we've got a race basically every two
- 42:48Speaker 3: weeks until September. He will come back, probably in the
- 42:51Speaker 3: next one too. I reckon he might try to come
- 42:54Speaker 3: back this weekend simply because on the Monday after Hares
- 42:57Speaker 3: there's a one day test there. Testing is so few
- 43:01Speaker 3: and far between in MotoGP these days. He'll want to
- 43:03Speaker 3: get through a weekend and then get the benefit of
- 43:06Speaker 3: doing the test on the Monday. So if he's close
- 43:08Speaker 3: to being right, I would suggest that they'll have him
- 43:10Speaker 3: on the bike this weekend.
- 43:12Speaker 1: You mentioned Fernandez or Gusto Fernandez there. I just want
- 43:14Speaker 1: to say I actually spoke to him when I was
- 43:17Speaker 1: at Qatar and the fan forum stage, asking him what
- 43:20Speaker 1: is like test riding and whatnot. My read from what
- 43:22Speaker 1: he said to me, he wants to come back to
- 43:25Speaker 1: Moto GP. As you would. He had very difficult years.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Let's say he was saying to me. He is working harder,
- 43:33Speaker 1: he was training more, He's doing with everything that he
- 43:35Speaker 1: can to try and get back. Are we seeing the
- 43:38Speaker 1: results that could potentially bring him back, do you think?
- 43:41Speaker 1: Or is it he is the test writer miguel O
- 43:43Speaker 1: Lavera like we talk about this, the one year contract
- 43:46Speaker 1: with Miller all the time. Right.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Interesting with they Amahart, they've got sort of five i
- 43:51Speaker 3: won't say overqualified, but five legit motor GP riders for
- 43:54Speaker 3: four bikes. Right, So Quaaterero is the king pin, the
- 43:58Speaker 3: leader of the project, the guy they're paying them money to.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Alex Rins, as we've discussed before, has been just a
- 44:03Speaker 3: shadow of himself since that accident Magello a couple of
- 44:06Speaker 3: years ago, and he's still on the grid based on
- 44:08Speaker 3: what he did before that than what he's done since.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Because the last year and a half has been pretty bad.
- 44:14Speaker 3: We know how good Alex is when he's fully fit,
- 44:16Speaker 3: but those three those words, when he's fully fit, that's
- 44:18Speaker 3: the caveat We just don't know Jack Miller, I think,
- 44:22Speaker 3: you know, take guitar out of it. I think he's
- 44:24Speaker 3: already shown why he's so valuable to a new project
- 44:27Speaker 3: in terms of pramaccas, of the experience, the fact that
- 44:30Speaker 3: Jack finds the ceiling of a bike super quickly. He's
- 44:33Speaker 3: done everything he needs to do, And to my mind,
- 44:36Speaker 3: Fernandez's motor GP story isn't finished. I think he's probably
- 44:39Speaker 3: a better ride and some guy's on the grid now,
- 44:41Speaker 3: he's just in the wrong situation.
- 44:42Speaker 2: So I think.
- 44:43Speaker 3: He's in a good position to get back on the
- 44:46Speaker 3: grid simply because Yamaha has got a few moving pieces there.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Whether he gets back on, I don't know. He's older
- 44:52Speaker 3: than you think he is. You think of him as
- 44:53Speaker 3: being a younger guy because he won that two two championship.
- 44:56Speaker 3: He took a while to get there, so he's in
- 44:59Speaker 3: that sort of mid to late twenties range. But I
- 45:02Speaker 3: don't think he's finished by any means. I could see
- 45:04Speaker 3: him getting back in. But there's just a few unanswered
- 45:07Speaker 3: questions at Yamaha. Other than Quatarero, who's the proven you know,
- 45:11Speaker 3: he's their shining light. He's the proven commodity. The other
- 45:13Speaker 3: guys all have justify they have justifiable cases to stay
- 45:17Speaker 3: on the grid, But just who's got the most justifiable case?
- 45:19Speaker 2: I guess that's the answer to that question.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Before we wrap this one up, let's talk about our Aussies. So,
- 45:25Speaker 1: Sena Aegeus, what was up with that? That was not
- 45:29Speaker 1: the ride that we from.
- 45:32Speaker 3: No I was going to ask you that exact question,
- 45:34Speaker 3: because that was a little bit of a head scratcher
- 45:37Speaker 3: that I mean, with the others, we know Jacob Rolston
- 45:39Speaker 3: is still getting himself back to full fitness and we
- 45:41Speaker 3: can discuss the craziest photo finish of all time Momoto
- 45:44Speaker 3: three with John Kelso at a sec. But yeah, the
- 45:46Speaker 3: age is one that I must admit that was because
- 45:48Speaker 3: it was being held at stupid a clock here in Australia.
- 45:51Speaker 3: I didn't sort of tune in and have a look
- 45:52Speaker 3: and I was like, that's not worked out what happened?
- 45:55Speaker 3: So you would have spoken to him over the course
- 45:56Speaker 3: of the weekend. What was his read on it?
- 45:58Speaker 1: Well, to me, he seemed really comfortable, he seemed good.
- 46:02Speaker 1: It was maybe just like fine a little bits, but
- 46:06Speaker 1: I know he's working really closely with Manu Gonzales and
- 46:12Speaker 1: she guys can see right now somehow there's balloons on
- 46:14Speaker 1: my screen. I don't know what's happening, but anyway, I
- 46:17Speaker 1: know that they are there working really closely together. So
- 46:19Speaker 1: from my understanding, that was all okay. But then to
- 46:24Speaker 1: get that double long lap penalty and then not complete
- 46:29Speaker 1: it properly and then have to do another one for me,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I think that was Senna being really frustrated and not
- 46:37Speaker 1: letting it clear his mind and not just head down Taylor,
- 46:39Speaker 1: do what you have to do and then go through. I
- 46:41Speaker 1: think that was him just trying to just a frustration
- 46:45Speaker 1: getting to him. And I think he's still let's call
- 46:48Speaker 1: him a rookie. Is his second year, still in Moto two.
- 46:51Speaker 1: He's still learning to deal with that. But also the
- 46:53Speaker 1: fact that his bike, his team, they're closer to the
- 46:56Speaker 1: front than what they were last year. We hear only
- 46:58Speaker 1: had his first podium the end of last year, but
- 47:00Speaker 1: he's already had a podium this year. I think it's
- 47:02Speaker 1: the frustration. I think it's him having to learn and
- 47:05Speaker 1: keep growing.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's a different equation, isn't it. When
- 47:08Speaker 3: you know you've got machinery that's capable of better and
- 47:11Speaker 3: for whatever reason, you're not achieving that. I think the penalty,
- 47:15Speaker 3: I think you're completely right. It's one of those things
- 47:17Speaker 3: that maybe in the inexperience still in that you are
- 47:21Speaker 3: too busy being annoyed about what has happened rather than
- 47:23Speaker 3: thinking about what might happen in the future. You sort
- 47:25Speaker 3: of hang on to stuff for that little bit too
- 47:26Speaker 3: long and not completing along that penalty correctly. It's easy
- 47:29Speaker 3: for you and I had to say City got the couch,
- 47:30Speaker 3: but it's one of those things you can't rail against it.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It's happened.
- 47:33Speaker 3: You've just got to deal with it and move on
- 47:35Speaker 3: to almost handicap yourself while having to do it a
- 47:37Speaker 3: second time. That wasn't exactly ideal. But while we're talking Australians,
- 47:41Speaker 3: I did shout at my screen here a couple of
- 47:44Speaker 3: times with Joel Kelso because my goodness, like to finish
- 47:47Speaker 3: what was it, eight one hundreds off a win and
- 47:49Speaker 3: not even be.
- 47:50Speaker 2: On the podium. That was absolutely crazy. The final lap
- 47:53Speaker 2: of that Moto THII race.
- 47:55Speaker 1: It was insane and you could hear the crowd, you
- 47:58Speaker 1: could hear everyone like gasping. Everyone's on the edge of
- 48:01Speaker 1: their seats. Joel. The thing is, he's so close now,
- 48:07Speaker 1: and it's such a big improvement from last year. He
- 48:09Speaker 1: is close. We Sawry Meals on the front row this weekend,
- 48:12Speaker 1: like he is getting that and it's not going to
- 48:14Speaker 1: be long before he's consistently that p one position. Man,
- 48:19Speaker 1: just oh, it was just right there.
- 48:22Speaker 3: It's so near but so far. But look you look
- 48:24Speaker 3: at the season he's having, I mean, third World championship.
- 48:26Speaker 3: He's doing a really, really nice job. But it feels
- 48:29Speaker 3: to me like I don't think it's going to be
- 48:31Speaker 3: too long until he wins one of these because he's
- 48:33Speaker 3: right there in the mix now, you just need he's
- 48:36Speaker 3: at ninety nine point eight percent of what he needs
- 48:38Speaker 3: to be able to do. It's just that last little bit.
- 48:40Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm galling to finish off the podium. But
- 48:43Speaker 3: that photo finish I actually paused that and looked at
- 48:45Speaker 3: that finish line a couple of times. You could not
- 48:47Speaker 3: have had a podium decided by smaller bargins. I don't
- 48:50Speaker 3: even know if it was the width of a front
- 48:51Speaker 3: wheel was about half a front wheel?
- 48:53Speaker 2: Is crazy?
- 48:54Speaker 1: Do you know what blows my mind is how quickly
- 48:56Speaker 1: the guy's in the control room looking at all the
- 48:59Speaker 1: cameras ken decide who it was because I was waiting
- 49:03Speaker 1: in the wings to go and present the podium and
- 49:06Speaker 1: you see it the replaces happening on the TV screen
- 49:09Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you get the result sheet.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Note this is what it is. This is the finale.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I mean they say that and then we had the
- 49:14Speaker 1: Maverick Finnella situation, but this is the finale, all of
- 49:17Speaker 1: a sudden, like how they can find it. It's so close.
- 49:21Speaker 3: That's why they are the best of the world doing
- 49:23Speaker 3: what they're doing and finding these things.
- 49:24Speaker 2: That's why they're doing it.
- 49:25Speaker 1: And that's what you and I are talking about it
- 49:27Speaker 1: exactly exactly. And one last writer to talk about before
- 49:30Speaker 1: we close this up, Jacob Realstone. I spoke with Jacob
- 49:34Speaker 1: really briefly. I said, hey, going, how are you feeling, like,
- 49:37Speaker 1: how's it being back? He said, he is also taking
- 49:40Speaker 1: his time coming back and getting up to speed. He
- 49:42Speaker 1: feels like there's not pressure there, but I think he's
- 49:45Speaker 1: putting pressure on himself. And I must admit, from having
- 49:48Speaker 1: such a big damage of an injury to his neck.
- 49:52Speaker 1: What did he finish on the weekend fourteenth. I feel like, Okay,
- 49:55Speaker 1: it's gonna take Jacob a few races to get back
- 49:59Speaker 1: to where we know can get back to. But I
- 50:01Speaker 1: think he's coming back more determined this time.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I mean that whole absence makes
- 50:05Speaker 3: the heart growth on the type thing he's been out
- 50:07Speaker 3: of it, and it's obviously a serious, serious injury. His
- 50:09Speaker 3: number one goal now is to get back to at
- 50:12Speaker 3: least where he finished last year in terms of confidence
- 50:14Speaker 3: and feel and physically. But you don't want to overstep
- 50:18Speaker 3: here because the last thing he needs is another fall.
- 50:20Speaker 3: He just needs to get through weekends cleanly and just
- 50:22Speaker 3: methodically build his way back up. I reckon it about
- 50:25Speaker 3: a month's time will start to see the best of
- 50:27Speaker 3: Jacob once he's had a couple of European tracks under
- 50:29Speaker 3: his belt, and obviously going back to Herreth this weekend
- 50:31Speaker 3: will be a bit of a mental thing to get
- 50:33Speaker 3: over because of where he was injured, but it's he
- 50:36Speaker 3: just needs to. You know, you're asking a motorcycle rider
- 50:38Speaker 3: to be patient. It's not the easiest thing in the world,
- 50:40Speaker 3: but he just needs to do that at the moment
- 50:42Speaker 3: and just methodically get his way back to where he was.
- 50:45Speaker 1: I love that you've said that twice in this podcast
- 50:47Speaker 1: about how I rode a cycle race and needs to
- 50:49Speaker 1: be patient, and I'm just thinking about what it's like
- 50:52Speaker 1: being in my family and having the first experience of that.
- 50:55Speaker 3: I spent many a year having this conversation with your
- 50:57Speaker 3: brother and he looked at me like I was completely
- 50:59Speaker 3: insane because I don't understand.
- 51:01Speaker 2: He was right and so was I, and I think.
- 51:04Speaker 1: That is the perfect place to wrap this one up. Guys.
