- 0:00Let's go for
- 0:00>> I mean obviously the first time y'all
- 0:02played state Hubard goes nuts in that
- 0:03first half is just as simple as all
- 0:05right don't don't let him do that again
- 0:07and and maybe more like the second half
- 0:08the way y'all got it going on defense
- 0:10>> maybe not let him make nine threes in
- 0:12the first half that's first thing first
- 0:13priority is not let Hubard have 35 in
- 0:15the first half but no I mean of the nine
- 0:18threes he made in the first half like I
- 0:19would say five of them were just really
- 0:21bad coverage mistakes and uh four of
- 0:23them were really tough good contested
- 0:26shots but when you make mistakes early
- 0:28in games against players like that to
- 0:29see the ball go in. Um the rim just
- 0:31looks a lot bigger. So, we got to do a
- 0:33better job early um in this one of just
- 0:36kind of limiting our mistakes and not
- 0:37letting him get anything clean.
- 0:38Everything he's makes, he's got to earn
- 0:40and uh you know, we made some
- 0:42adjustments to the game plan and uh we
- 0:43got to execute him.
- 0:44>> Yeah. You talked about fast starts. I
- 0:45mean, you guys in the second half
- 0:47against B had a you know, beat him in
- 0:49the second half. Just how much is it
- 0:50like you said, don't let them get that
- 0:52confidence. Don't let them get going,
- 0:53get off to a good start and and see see
- 0:55where it goes from there. Yeah, I mean
- 0:56early at Mississippi State, you know, we
- 0:57actually had some really good defensive
- 0:59possessions, but in the first five
- 1:00minutes, they had four offensive
- 1:01rebounds. And, you know, when you give a
- 1:03team like that second chance
- 1:04opportunities, they're going to convert
- 1:05them. Just like Alabama, you know, if
- 1:07you looked at that game in 70
- 1:10possessions on the first shot, they
- 1:12scored 70 points. That's really good.
- 1:14One point per possession. On the 13
- 1:16possessions where they had an offensive
- 1:18rebound or multiple, they had they
- 1:20scored like two points per possession.
- 1:21So, they scored on every second chance
- 1:23opportunity. So, you can't allow teams
- 1:25like that, you know, to to get second
- 1:26chances because they do a great job of
- 1:28converting them. And that was a lot of
- 1:30the Mississippi State game early. They
- 1:31got confidence because they got second
- 1:33chance opportunities. And it's it's as
- 1:35easy as just going and checking a guy
- 1:36out and diving on the floor for a loose
- 1:38ball. Like controllable things are
- 1:39things that have gotten us beat a lot
- 1:41this year. So, you know, the guys
- 1:43understand that the guys were
- 1:44accountable, but they understand that,
- 1:46you know, if we don't make that mistake,
- 1:47you know, um we're going to be going
- 1:49home.
- 1:49>> What worked better in the second half
- 1:51against against Hover when you guys play
- 1:53there? I know you kind of doubled him
- 1:55every time he caught it. Do you do you
- 1:56expect to maybe do sort of the same
- 1:57thing? It's probably not as easy as as
- 1:59just trying to get the ball out of his
- 2:00hands.
- 2:00>> They'll be ready for it. So, I'm not
- 2:02sure how effective it'll be this game.
- 2:03Um, you know, but even when we didn't do
- 2:06that, we did that probably 10 times in
- 2:07the second half. So, I mean, there was
- 2:09another 20 possessions. And so I thought
- 2:10we just did a better job of, you know,
- 2:13being at the level of his screens um in
- 2:15the second half whereas in the first
- 2:16half we were just kind of caught in
- 2:17between and, you know, he made some
- 2:19really good shots and we gapped a few of
- 2:21his pin downs and, you know, when you do
- 2:23that, he's going to make shots. So we
- 2:24got to, you know, try and run him off
- 2:25the three-point line as best we can and
- 2:27do a better job executing our coverages.
- 2:29>> You think of the mentality team's kind
- 2:30of been, you know, you guys have had a
- 2:32tough last last couple months, but you
- 2:34still have an opportunity. You still
- 2:35have an opportunity to maybe get on a
- 2:36roll here and see what happens from
- 2:37there. How are they how are they
- 2:38approaching? Yeah, I mean the last
- 2:39month's been, you know, last four weeks
- 2:41been tough. Um but, you know, they we
- 2:44lose to Alabama and we're still in
- 2:46Lonard's, you know, tournament. So, it's
- 2:48like, you know, his brackology deal. So,
- 2:49it's like, you know, um we're we're
- 2:51still in position and we just got to
- 2:53come out here and you know, we got to
- 2:54win a couple games and uh you know, kind
- 2:56of just take it out of uh you know, we
- 3:00there's going to be big Steelers. We
- 3:01just you know, we got we got to control
- 3:02what we control. We got to win we got to
- 3:04win some games. our our mindset is to
- 3:05come out here and try and win five
- 3:06games, but obviously you got to get the
- 3:08first one in order to do that. So,
- 3:09they've been good. They they still
- 3:11recognize through all the difficult
- 3:13defeats that, you know, we're still
- 3:15firmly on the bubble and we still have
- 3:16an opportunity to play in this
- 3:17tournament. So, um you know, that's not
- 3:20always been the case here at Auburn. And
- 3:22um you know, our our guys understand
- 3:24that they have a tremendous opportunity
- 3:26and a tremendous responsibility and we
- 3:28got to try and finish the job. It's, you
- 3:30know, it's I think it's kind of gotten
- 3:32overlooked a little bit because of the
- 3:33records, but like KO the way he is
- 3:35scoring and the way he's shooting for
- 3:36y'all down the stretch. Just how big has
- 3:38that been, especially when y'all have,
- 3:40you know, had opportunities to stay in
- 3:41these games, hanging hanging these games
- 3:43with the way he's been shooting?
- 3:44>> Yeah, I mean, Oklahoma in the first
- 3:45half, um, obviously keeps in the game
- 3:47when they're going crazy. um you know,
- 3:49he played well at Mississippi State,
- 3:50played well at Alabama. Um you know, so
- 3:53I mean, he's had some really big games
- 3:55um when we've needed him to, you know,
- 3:57played well, I think, against LSU and um
- 3:59Kentucky. So, he's got to continue to do
- 4:01that. Um all the while though, like our
- 4:03offense has never been an issue. We got
- 4:06to guard, man. It's just we got to
- 4:08defend better. And KO's one of our best
- 4:10defenders and uh he's got to do a better
- 4:12job of uh you know, continuing to lead
- 4:14on that on that area. you know, he had
- 4:16two early fouls against Mississippi
- 4:17State and was out the whole first half
- 4:19basically and uh you know, we need him
- 4:21to be in the game in order for us to
- 4:22defend Hubard
- 4:23>> and Murf getting a second shot at state
- 4:26and you've talked about how he wants to
- 4:27win an NCA tournament to get this
- 4:29opportunity again after the first one
- 4:31didn't go the way way he wanted to. Just
- 4:32how how big do you think it's going to
- 4:33be for him?
- 4:34>> Yeah, I mean it's you know he can't let
- 4:35them like the moment be too big or just
- 4:38bigger than what it needs to be. He
- 4:39needs to just be focused on what makes
- 4:41Murf be so effective and he's just got
- 4:43to play his game. You know, I thought
- 4:45obviously anyone going back into that
- 4:47environment is going to get caught up in
- 4:48those emotions because he graduated from
- 4:50there. He had a lot of memories there.
- 4:52Um, you know, his friends were there.
- 4:53Like it was just, you know, I I've
- 4:55experienced that when I went back to
- 4:56Tennessee the first time. Like it's it's
- 4:57a lot. And, uh, you know, it affected
- 4:59his performance a little bit. So, he's
- 5:01got to just kind of be even keeled
- 5:02tomorrow and just kind of lock into what
- 5:04he does well. And, um, if he does that,
- 5:06you know, he'll he'll be able to go out
- 5:08there and have a good game.
- 5:09>> Yeah.
- 5:09>> You you've been a part of a couple
- 5:11different Auburn teams that won a few
- 5:13games here. when it surprised people
- 5:15that first year, that 2019 team was
- 5:17catching fire. What's what's kind of the
- 5:19traits of a team that's able to win a
- 5:21few games in a few days? Cuz obviously
- 5:22it's it's even more of a load than the
- 5:24NCAA tournament cuz you don't have any
- 5:26days off.
- 5:26>> Yeah, I mean it's about matchups. Um
- 5:28obviously the first one's always is
- 5:30always the hardest one. You know, if you
- 5:31remember back to our first year, we
- 5:33played Mississippi State and it was like
- 5:34a one or two point game. In 2019 it was
- 5:37Missouri and it was like a really close
- 5:39game. And then um in 2024,
- 5:43>> who did we play in the first game?
- 5:45>> State.
- 5:46>> I know. There State in that run. I
- 5:49remember that really tough game.
- 5:50>> That That was a tough one. Yeah.
- 5:51>> South Carolina.
- 5:52>> Okay. And that Yeah, actually we were
- 5:54blew out. So that that that one
- 5:56>> that was a really bad match up.
- 5:57>> That Yeah, that was a good match up for
- 5:59us.
- 6:00>> Um yeah, it's about matchups and you
- 6:01know, just you got to see a couple go in
- 6:04early and you know, it's crazy when you
- 6:06get a little bit of confidence in this
- 6:07tournament what what it can do for you.
- 6:08So yeah, this is a team that can, you
- 6:10know, get confident quick and uh, you
- 6:12know, we just if we if we have a little
- 6:14success early, you know, this team can
- 6:16uh is capable of making a run.
- 6:18>> Cool. flexes.
