- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you a question, and I'd love for you to be really honest with yourself.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Do you struggle with being a perfectionist?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Well, if the answer is yes, and if you're like most people, the answer is probably yes.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: If the answer, my friend, is yes, then here's a strategy to help you overcome perfectionism immediately.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So here's the deal: if you're a perfectionist, you're always shooting for doing a level work.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: You have a tendency to focus on excellence.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: You want everything that you do to be really, really good.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And that's of course a good thing.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But the problem is that when you're a perfectionist, your definition of doing a level work is so far above everybody else's that it's really impossible to reach.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And the reason that perfectionists oftentimes get frustrated is because they've set the standard so unrealistically high that they can never really reach it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So it's almost like you're a basketball player and you're setting the hoop so high that you can never do a slam duck.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And if I've ever heard a recipe for being discouraged and frustrated and sad, well, that's probably what it is.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So here's the key.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I want you to temper your expectations a bit so that you're shooting for B level work, maybe B plus at best.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Now you might think of this as lowering your standards, but remember that when you're a perfectionist, your standards are so high and they're so unrealistic that your B is everybody else's A.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So I want you to make it your goal to do B level writing, at least on your first draft.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Most of us don't have the capacity to be objective about our work anyway, so you have to trust that when you set your sights on doing B level work, it's probably an A in everybody else's eyes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And when you shoot for doing B level work, you can get your work done faster and still be excellent.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And plus, when you have the help of a good editor and a proofreader and other people around you, they're going to help transform your work into a level work eventually.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: But specifically when you're working on those first drafts, just do B-level work, just get it done, get it out there.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: That's what editing, revisions, and rewrites are for.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: They can transform that B-level work into A-level work eventually.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Whatever you're working on today, shoot for doing B-level work, particularly if you're working on a first draft.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Hey, before I go, I want to let you know that today's episode is sponsored by our beloved Daily Writer Club.
