- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, you know what I thought would be fun? Yes,
- 0:06Speaker 1: we should play like I don't know why, but we
- 0:09Speaker 1: should play a game, right, And I thought what i'd do.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I thought I'd get three different car engines.
- 0:14Speaker 2: That's a great idea.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I wanted to find out if you could guess which
- 0:17Speaker 1: is which? Yes, I like that. All right, let me
- 0:19Speaker 1: sort of see if I can work this out. He's
- 0:21Speaker 1: the first one. Are you listening, yes, listen carefully give
- 0:29Speaker 1: it some more, just stubi. I feel like you would
- 0:34Speaker 1: have owned this car. There's your clue.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, hold on, you're giving me cars that aren't new.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm going to struggle with this. It sounds it sounds
- 0:50Speaker 2: not very powerful. So I'm going to say it's like
- 0:52Speaker 2: a four cylinder of some sort potentially, and let's not
- 0:57Speaker 2: reveal it on this episode. We'll get people to email.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Let's at contact at the Drive show dot com, dodate
- 1:02Speaker 2: you tell us.
- 1:04Speaker 1: First off, I will say one thing, the four cylinder.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Hang on, I'll give it to you all more time.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Oh yes, jesus, this would be you as a teenager.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You can't, Polly, Let's go give this car a harden
- 1:27Speaker 1: pull into that survey, would you?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Poorly?
- 1:29Speaker 1: I need to get some darts. You're always feasting on
- 1:31Speaker 1: me smokes, I can't feast it together. Really? All right?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Should we move on to the second one? Yes, go on, Okay,
- 1:43Speaker 1: here we go. Now, I've got a feeling you've been
- 1:56Speaker 1: in one of these because I think I've seen an
- 1:57Speaker 1: old photo.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yes, goat, do the start again. It sounds familiar. Okay,
- 2:05Speaker 2: so I think it's a Ferrari okay, good, good, And
- 2:10Speaker 2: I think it is. It sounds like a an F
- 2:16Speaker 2: four thirty two.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Ferrari four or fifty okay, right, okay, here we go.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Third one. You're ready?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Now close your eyes yep, good, listen, listen very carefully,
- 2:32Speaker 1: my eyes are shut.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Okay. Here we got never a good idea around you going?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Okay, here we go. Sorry, sorry I made that manually.
- 2:45Speaker 1: People literally just stood up in my seat A pans
- 2:51Speaker 1: around my ankles. That Paul and he gets up out
- 2:55Speaker 1: of better than the water. Get it done better than always? Okay,
- 3:02Speaker 1: here we go, Here we go, Hi, hang on, this
- 3:07Speaker 1: is begain the keys.
- 3:18Speaker 2: This sounds like it was when you were young. It
- 3:23Speaker 2: sounds like something you have to wind up at the front.
- 3:26Speaker 1: There we go. Not the old joke is it that one.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I have no idea. Let's with this game in the future.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Can we just make it new cars?
- 3:34Speaker 1: So it's stuff that I thought it would be better
- 3:35Speaker 1: with the older cars because then you're kind of like
- 3:38Speaker 1: it stuff that you would have grown up with. It
- 3:39Speaker 1: sounds that you would have heard your whole life.
- 3:41Speaker 2: All right, Well, if you're listening right now, contact at
- 3:43Speaker 2: the Drive show dot com today, you email us and
- 3:45Speaker 2: let us know what it is, and Gordy can raid
- 3:48Speaker 2: the prize cup at his work for somebody.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Here we go, one more time, Here we go. This
- 3:52Speaker 1: is the last time.
- 3:53Speaker 2: This is it?
- 3:55Speaker 1: One more time?
- 4:00Speaker 2: It sounds like an old Volkswagen or something. Oh really,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but yeah, that was a complete guess it's not. It
- 4:07Speaker 2: doesn't sound like a Beetle, though.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I'll give you a clue. Yeah, I mean it's kind
- 4:12Speaker 1: of the longest running, most manufactured car ever, right, but
- 4:18Speaker 1: it doesn't sound like a Beetle. Okay, okay, one last one,
- 4:26Speaker 1: last car?
- 4:26Speaker 2: You're ready?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Okay, here we go. Sorry, at this point, Paul's just
- 4:34Speaker 1: like I went to university, do you know what. I
- 4:38Speaker 1: literally spent fifteen minutes going through various parts out effects
- 4:43Speaker 1: to find the perfect I'll find the file.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Oh there we go.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That's a morning. Oh jeuz, that was a big night
- 4:53Speaker 1: last night. Well that was my ex.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You are disturbing.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Let's talk stuff that's happened. Let's talk Volvo's tech. Yes,
- 5:06Speaker 1: because something kind of interesting is has happened with their
- 5:10Speaker 1: I guess the tech they're putting in their cars. And
- 5:12Speaker 1: it raises a bloody good question.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah. So look, Volvo has come out and said and Volvo,
- 5:18Speaker 2: of course is owned by Gearly, a Chinese manufacturer, it's
- 5:21Speaker 2: come out and said that it's been the victim of
- 5:23Speaker 2: a cyber attack, with the attackers making off with R
- 5:26Speaker 2: and D data. So that's research and development data. And
- 5:30Speaker 2: I think this opens up a greater question. They claim
- 5:33Speaker 2: no user data was captured here, but it opens up
- 5:35Speaker 2: a greater question. What is going to happen in the
- 5:37Speaker 2: future when you know, I'm going to refer to my
- 5:40Speaker 2: Tesla because I own a Model three.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Well, just in case you miss that, can you say
- 5:45Speaker 1: that again?
- 5:46Speaker 2: What happens when I'm driving down the road, My car
- 5:49Speaker 2: is communicating with Tesla's servers constantly, and someone hacks into
- 5:54Speaker 2: it and says, okay, from now on, the you know,
- 5:57Speaker 2: the indicator operates the brakes or something like that. So
- 6:01Speaker 2: I know that they Tesla, for example, and other car
- 6:03Speaker 2: companies run hackathons to expose these flaws in their systems.
- 6:07Speaker 2: They have bug bounties as well if you discover a
- 6:09Speaker 2: big bug that you know they didn't know about. But ultimately,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I think we are setting ourselves up for some disaster
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the future for companies that perhaps don't invest enough
- 6:19Speaker 2: into security, because this kind of stuff is pretty alarming
- 6:24Speaker 2: to me.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's weird though. It's such a scary thought.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it is when you consider that cars
- 6:29Speaker 2: of the future will be entirely connected. Even you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: a Yaris now has connectivity with the outside world. All
- 6:36Speaker 2: the forward products do. It was interesting a report by
- 6:39Speaker 2: the FBI in twenty seventeen said that only one in
- 6:42Speaker 2: seven this is an estimate cyber crimes were being reported
- 6:45Speaker 2: by corporations. Because I'll tell you what, if you were
- 6:48Speaker 2: responsible for security at your company and something major happened,
- 6:52Speaker 2: I don't think I'd be running to my boss and going, hey,
- 6:55Speaker 2: so I forgot to apply a patch and now all
- 6:59Speaker 2: of our data is go on.
- 7:00Speaker 1: By the way, that sounds so like me. Yeah, Well,
- 7:03Speaker 1: thank if I was in charge of security. I'd just
- 7:05Speaker 1: be like, some shits hit the firm.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but you can see why a lot of these
- 7:10Speaker 2: companies don't want to report this, especially if you're a
- 7:12Speaker 2: publicly listed company. Can you imagine if one of them
- 7:14Speaker 2: came out and said, hey, we've lost all this data.
- 7:17Speaker 2: If you're publicly listed, your share price could be decimated instantly.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So yeah, it really is concerning to me. And you know,
- 7:25Speaker 2: I really do hope that car companies take this stuff
- 7:27Speaker 2: seriously and really sort of get into it. I think
- 7:30Speaker 2: it was in twenty seventeen there was a ransomware called
- 7:33Speaker 2: want to Cry, and one of the podcasts that I
- 7:35Speaker 2: listened to, Darknet Diaries, basically went into a lot of
- 7:38Speaker 2: detail about this and car companies like Reno, Nissen, and
- 7:41Speaker 2: Honda were affected and their production lines were shut down
- 7:45Speaker 2: to deal with these issues. And what the ransom were
- 7:49Speaker 2: effectively did was encrypted the computer and said Okay, you
- 7:53Speaker 2: can have your data, but you have to send me
- 7:55Speaker 2: five bitcoin or something like that. And one of my
- 7:58Speaker 2: mates in it was working with Cinema that was actually
- 8:01Speaker 2: affected by this, and what he found was you have
- 8:05Speaker 2: a ransomwhere like when a cry goes out to the
- 8:09Speaker 2: dark webon and will get purchased by seven or eight
- 8:11Speaker 2: different people. And this cinema was basically infected five different times.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So they paid one of these ransoms and the guy goes, yep,
- 8:21Speaker 2: no dramas, that's unencrypted, and they're like, hold on, all
- 8:23Speaker 2: of our shit's still encrypted. And they said, oh, well
- 8:26Speaker 2: that wasn't us, that was some other hacker group. So
- 8:28Speaker 2: you basically are endlessly chasing your tail when you pay
- 8:31Speaker 2: these people, which is why the stance is to just
- 8:33Speaker 2: not pay and recover these systems manually.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Who do you reckon would be using this data? Because
- 8:38Speaker 1: to me, I don't know. I feel like, I mean,
- 8:41Speaker 1: the obvious one would be other car manufacturers, but there
- 8:43Speaker 1: would be just so much legality around this, And well.
- 8:48Speaker 2: That's the thing I don't know, because ultimately you can't
- 8:52Speaker 2: use this data like I mean, you ethically couldn't use it.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So it does make you wonder who's going to bother
- 8:57Speaker 2: using it. But you look at some of these Chinese
- 8:59Speaker 2: manufacturers who are in the business of just copying everything.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I think if you stumbled across this, you could develop
- 9:05Speaker 2: an electric car that these guys have maybe spent ten
- 9:08Speaker 2: billion dollars in R and D four. You could fast
- 9:10Speaker 2: track it and have an electric car on the market
- 9:12Speaker 2: with their technology in no time flat. You would no
- 9:15Speaker 2: one would ever know that that's where your ideas came from.
- 9:18Speaker 2: But yeah, it is. It is pretty troubling stuff.
- 9:21Speaker 1: This week, subru released their WRX. I don't know if
- 9:26Speaker 1: this is the shittastic addition, but look, as someone who
- 9:30Speaker 1: kind of grew up with these cars, you know, when
- 9:32Speaker 1: these were that when that WRX was brought out, when
- 9:36Speaker 1: was that sort of mid to early nineties ninety four,
- 9:41Speaker 1: it was like a dream car, you know what I mean. Ye,
- 9:44Speaker 1: it was the car that like the cool kids dat
- 9:46Speaker 1: at school had, or the fast and furious car, you know.
- 9:50Speaker 1: And now they just look I just feel like in
- 9:54Speaker 1: the last twenty years, I mean, they haven't really made
- 9:55Speaker 1: that much progress.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Well now they're not fast and not furious.
- 10:01Speaker 1: The h I'll laugh at that for far too long,
- 10:05Speaker 1: far more than it deserves to. I'll be at home
- 10:09Speaker 1: going kil I'm still laughing. The interior on the WRX
- 10:15Speaker 1: means always it's been always a little bit uninspiring and unthoughtful,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and it just, honestly, I was I kind of feel
- 10:23Speaker 1: like they needed a that they need a kick in
- 10:26Speaker 1: the butt and they just haven't delivered.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm one hundred percent on the on the same page.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I think the outside looks pleasant, the inside looks like
- 10:34Speaker 2: every other super rue And I know this isn't the WRXSTI,
- 10:37Speaker 2: which is obviously going to be the faster version. But
- 10:39Speaker 2: to be honest, the WRX two point four letter turbo
- 10:42Speaker 2: charge four cylinder, it makes two hundred kilobots of power
- 10:44Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty meters of.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Talk not great figures in twenty twenty one, Like they're okay,
- 10:50Speaker 1: that's the thing.
- 10:50Speaker 2: It's if you have a look at every other car
- 10:52Speaker 2: on the market. Two hundred Killowats was something that was
- 10:55Speaker 2: you know, modern a long time ago for a hot hatch,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and I reckon just Subarus is absolutely off the pace, and.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It feels it's a bit.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Across other Japanese manufacturers as well. Honda feels a bit
- 11:08Speaker 2: the same at the moment where they're just really not
- 11:09Speaker 2: doing anything interesting. And I don't know, I think these
- 11:12Speaker 2: companies will quickly become irrelevant if they're not working on
- 11:16Speaker 2: EV and hybrid technology. That the hybrid tech in subers
- 11:19Speaker 2: is absolutely terrible. It is some of the worst stuff
- 11:22Speaker 2: you'll find in a production car. And that's despite the
- 11:24Speaker 2: fact Toyota owns part of the company. It's like you
- 11:26Speaker 2: could have just gone to Toyota and said, hey, can
- 11:28Speaker 2: we have the RAV four hybrid running gear for this car? Instead,
- 11:32Speaker 2: they just concocted their own creation.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right about Subaru and Honda too. I mean
- 11:37Speaker 1: they're dropping these safe, generic, uninspiring, barely evolved cars. And
- 11:45Speaker 1: I mean that's what I'm loving about Kia and Hyundai
- 11:48Speaker 1: at the moment. The the I thirty N Sedan, the
- 11:54Speaker 1: Alantra in other markets, but that is a sure I mean,
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's a two lead you know, turbe charge for cylinder,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but it's and it doesn't have the four wheel drive.
- 12:03Speaker 1: But I mean it's still pulling over two hundred killer ONTs.
- 12:07Speaker 1: It's got nearly like four hundred newton meters. It's a
- 12:10Speaker 1: proper little car. And when that STI drops, it would
- 12:14Speaker 1: want to impress. Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Look, I think that ultimately the Subaru thing here, the
- 12:19Speaker 2: real sort of tipping point for them is all will drive.
- 12:22Speaker 2: That's what they hang their hat on. And perhaps there
- 12:24Speaker 2: are limitations in terms of how much talk they can
- 12:26Speaker 2: send through that. I know with the previous generation of
- 12:28Speaker 2: the STI they had a special center differential control that
- 12:32Speaker 2: there was rally bred and it's great because you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: it is unique to that car and it's quite sort
- 12:38Speaker 2: of you know, it's fitting of what that car is.
- 12:41Speaker 2: But if they don't have that stuff moving forward, and
- 12:43Speaker 2: they don't put enough effort into into really differentiating these
- 12:46Speaker 2: products from everything else on the market, I mean, yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 2: that Hyunda and Kya stuff, you really just look look
- 12:52Speaker 2: at that and go, well, why would I just buy
- 12:54Speaker 2: the Subaru over that?
- 12:55Speaker 1: Should we talk forward ranger?
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do it.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Let me get my staff and Paul's just having a
- 13:01Speaker 1: massive drink of water. I'm glad we've got that on
- 13:06Speaker 1: video because that is pure Gin, your honor. I'd like
- 13:11Speaker 1: the quardroom to see that my podcast partner was a
- 13:15Speaker 1: raging alcoholic from the start.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Oh we've got the same brand.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Ah, there you go. The friend tell the perfect Traveler
- 13:23Speaker 1: was yours floating around the radio station.
- 13:25Speaker 2: There, No, I got this from my car. You bought this? Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 2: that's funny.
- 13:30Speaker 1: We got we got slabs in the car park ie
- 13:32Speaker 1: and loaded into the back of my car.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Is this what we're giving away as a prize a
- 13:36Speaker 2: bottle of water. No, no, a half empty bottle of water.
- 13:40Speaker 1: We'll give yours away and sign it mine to it. Nothing.
- 13:43Speaker 1: All right, Hey, let's talk Ford Ranger.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:46Speaker 1: One exciting thing is I've got to go to the
- 13:48Speaker 1: launch of this. Yes, as did you? And you made
- 13:51Speaker 1: a bloody viral video clip from it. Geez all right mate,
- 13:55Speaker 1: calming down, it's just a bloody car launch.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Well what did you think when they pulled the silks off?
- 14:03Speaker 2: What did you think?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Before I get to that, can I just tell you
- 14:07Speaker 1: one i opening thing is you car journalists are exactly
- 14:10Speaker 1: the most good looking lot a that is that is
- 14:15Speaker 1: very true apart from you. Yes, the car journalists with
- 14:19Speaker 1: their Levi jeans that they've never got out of there like,
- 14:22Speaker 1: oh Levi Janes will do. I'm going to address the event.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'll just chuck a pair of le I'll just check,
- 14:26Speaker 1: chuck a pair of jeans on a nice, nice T
- 14:28Speaker 1: shirt and do you call them a ka sports cut?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yeah? Well, you know I need to just very briefly
- 14:34Speaker 2: hang shit on my colleagues here. But when there's a
- 14:37Speaker 2: dress code to an events, far too many of my
- 14:40Speaker 2: colleagues just turn up in whatever they want because they
- 14:42Speaker 2: know that the car manufacturer isn't going to go, oh,
- 14:45Speaker 2: I'm so sorry you're not wearing a tweed jacket. You
- 14:48Speaker 2: must leave. So they literally turn up looking like sacks
- 14:51Speaker 2: of shit sometimes, and I really just half.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Of them look like they're just writing the review on
- 14:55Speaker 1: the bonnot of their car. Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I really do feel embarrassed sometimes for them.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Ford Ranger, I liked it. I liked it. Would you think?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, the night before this was revealed, we did
- 15:10Speaker 2: our sort of deep dive presentation and I tell you what,
- 15:14Speaker 2: this just makes everything else in the segment feel ancient.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And that is a big problem if you are is
- 15:22Speaker 2: Suzu at the moment, who's just launched a brand new current,
- 15:24Speaker 2: a brand new platform that you're not planning to update
- 15:27Speaker 2: for probably another five years. To me, Ford has really
- 15:32Speaker 2: just thrown the kitchen sink at this thing. I love
- 15:35Speaker 2: the fact that a lot of the engineering work has
- 15:37Speaker 2: been done here in Australia and the headline numbers are
- 15:40Speaker 2: V six Diesel, so it's the Lion V six diesel.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So basically land Rover, Discovery, rain driver, sport range driver,
- 15:48Speaker 2: that's where that engine originates. They previously used it in
- 15:51Speaker 2: the F one fifty. The interior with the big twelve
- 15:54Speaker 2: point something inch screen there in the center sink for.
- 15:58Speaker 1: The sea clap headlights I thought looked really good, which
- 16:00Speaker 1: we've seen on the F one fifty and a few
- 16:01Speaker 1: of the other Fords.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yep Matrix eld headlights as well. You know, I think
- 16:07Speaker 2: this is really cool. And look they teased as well
- 16:10Speaker 2: at the end of the presentation the Raptor and that
- 16:12Speaker 2: sounded like it has a petrol V six as well,
- 16:15Speaker 2: which I don't know. I just cannot wait for that.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That's going to be sick.
- 16:18Speaker 1: You know what I loved about their marketing though. It
- 16:20Speaker 1: was almost like they're turning it into the every man's car.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Yes, well that's what it is like. I don't know
- 16:26Speaker 2: what it's like in Sydney at the moment, but here
- 16:28Speaker 2: in Melbourne it's beautiful. Man.
- 16:29Speaker 1: We haven't had a lockdown for ages.
- 16:32Speaker 2: But yeah, so look, I don't know. I think it
- 16:35Speaker 2: will do incredibly well, but I think it'll be expensive.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I think they're going to jack the price up.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they didn't give much much hint on pricing. It
- 16:44Speaker 1: was a great looking car, it really is. It's I
- 16:46Speaker 1: can you can tell it's been well thought about. It's
- 16:50Speaker 1: They are definitely trying to market it as the new
- 16:52Speaker 1: kind of every person car, whether you're an outdoorsy type,
- 16:56Speaker 1: whether you're a full will drive type, you know, a
- 16:58Speaker 1: family type. I love the intro of this car too,
- 17:01Speaker 1: because one my old man's a builder, so to me
- 17:05Speaker 1: it was always just a bloody tool box on wheels.
- 17:08Speaker 1: But I love what they've done with this car in
- 17:10Speaker 1: terms of just the little things, from the side step
- 17:12Speaker 1: to the I think there was like a ruler on
- 17:14Speaker 1: the tray there. The indentations are really cool indentations of
- 17:20Speaker 1: the Ranger on the back. Am I right? Did they
- 17:22Speaker 1: do a partnership with ARB.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yes, they're going to launch something like six hundred and
- 17:27Speaker 2: fifty accessories that you can fit and they're all covered
- 17:30Speaker 2: by the Ford warranty as well. Yeah. Awesome.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like it's almost like they've designed this
- 17:37Speaker 1: car like a piece of lego in terms of this
- 17:40Speaker 1: is what you're with them. We've built it so you
- 17:43Speaker 1: can add what you like and it'll be covered under
- 17:46Speaker 1: a it'll be rewarded by a Ford warranty, which is
- 17:48Speaker 1: really cool.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah. One thing to keep in mind though, if you
- 17:51Speaker 2: are going to go down the path of accessories, if
- 17:53Speaker 2: you're spending, well, actually, if you're spending regardless of how
- 17:56Speaker 2: much you're spending, but if you're getting near luxury car
- 17:59Speaker 2: tax threshold or not eligible for the for the instant asset.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Right off, keep in mind that every CeNSE you spend
- 18:06Speaker 2: on accessories, you then have to pay stamp duty on
- 18:08Speaker 2: so and potentially luxury car tax. So if you are
- 18:12Speaker 2: going down the path of AARB, get the car delivered
- 18:15Speaker 2: first and then go to AARB to get it all fitted,
- 18:17Speaker 2: because it'll still be covered by the warranty. But it
- 18:19Speaker 2: means that you then just pay the price to AARB,
- 18:22Speaker 2: as opposed to having an added on to your new
- 18:24Speaker 2: car purchase price.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Right, So don't do that at the dealership.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm not it's not financial advice.
- 18:31Speaker 1: But oh thank you Scott paid the barefoot investor. What
- 18:34Speaker 1: else have you got?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah? Oh my god, I had to laugh at his
- 18:38Speaker 2: terrible missteps on crypto But and anyway.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I had to laugh the fact that he actually
- 18:43Speaker 1: wears shoes. I'm like, oh, mate, I trust you. I'm
- 18:45Speaker 1: not blaying your book.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Fraud.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that Ford gave this car everything it
- 18:54Speaker 1: definitely needed, put it up to where it definitely needs
- 18:58Speaker 1: to be. From the the as you mentioned, the twelve
- 19:01Speaker 1: inth screen, the disc brakes all over. I think they
- 19:04Speaker 1: really sort of gave it a really good nudge and
- 19:08Speaker 1: have kind of put it in front. It looks. It
- 19:09Speaker 1: looks great.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah. So look in terms of off road equipment, it'll
- 19:13Speaker 2: come with your standard stuff, so high low range. The
- 19:16Speaker 2: big news as well with the V six diesel, and
- 19:18Speaker 2: I think other models in the range will be full
- 19:20Speaker 2: time fabill drive, so it's no longer a real wal
- 19:23Speaker 2: drive come fullull drive type arrangement. Yeah. I think it's
- 19:27Speaker 2: really going to shake up the segment. Ford's confessed that
- 19:31Speaker 2: by I think twenty twenty three twenty twenty four, we
- 19:33Speaker 2: will see the addition of hybrid slash plug in hybrid
- 19:37Speaker 2: technology for Ranger and that's going to be big news
- 19:41Speaker 2: as well. A lot of companies are moving towards zero
- 19:43Speaker 2: emission motoring and picking vehicles that offer zero emissions, and
- 19:47Speaker 2: I think that they're going to see a huge sale
- 19:49Speaker 2: surge if they are first to market with that tech.
- 19:52Speaker 1: It really is coming like a wave, isn't it. The
- 19:54Speaker 1: hybrid stuff. I mean, since we've started this like three
- 19:56Speaker 1: four episodes ago. It's just crazy the amount of announce
- 20:00Speaker 1: that have Sorry, that's a bon cough, that's not me
- 20:03Speaker 1: sick at all. It's crazy the amount of announcements that
- 20:08Speaker 1: they've made with hybrid and ev tech.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I think genuinely three years ago, if you
- 20:14Speaker 2: had to said, oh, we're going to have a big
- 20:15Speaker 2: way for VVS, a lot of people were like, no,
- 20:18Speaker 2: it's never gonna happen. You look today, there is so
- 20:21Speaker 2: much coming and still so much yet to be announced
- 20:24Speaker 2: that I think the ship is coming and everyone needs
- 20:27Speaker 2: to be sort of getting on trainers coming, and everyone
- 20:29Speaker 2: needs to be getting on it as soon as it
- 20:30Speaker 2: hits the station because it is coming hard and fast.
- 20:34Speaker 1: What kind of car do you drive?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Again?
- 20:38Speaker 1: What kind of cars? Have we got a sound effect
- 20:42Speaker 1: of that starting up?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Take up?
- 20:45Speaker 1: So? I guess we're not really going to review a
- 20:48Speaker 1: car this week, are we? No? Well, look no, maybe
- 20:52Speaker 1: we can throw it out there to the people. What
- 20:54Speaker 1: do you think we should review next? I think I'd
- 20:57Speaker 1: like to review something European.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yes, email us at contact at the Drive Show dot
- 21:02Speaker 2: com dot au. Let us know your thoughts. So George
- 21:06Speaker 2: shot us an email George Tits.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Oh sorry, do you want to Uh? Well, I was
- 21:10Speaker 1: going to say.
- 21:10Speaker 2: You can email us as well, and we'll read potentially
- 21:13Speaker 2: your email on the show. Look, it's not a bad joke.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Leave those to me. The email here is contact at
- 21:18Speaker 2: the driveshow dot com. Today you go read George's email.
- 21:21Speaker 1: He's got a couple of great questions here. Boomers at
- 21:24Speaker 1: my local dog park tell me the emissions put out
- 21:27Speaker 1: by evs is actually more than what a conventional internal
- 21:33Speaker 1: combustion engine will produce over its life. Is that actually true?
- 21:38Speaker 2: Well, he actually said emissions that are put out during
- 21:40Speaker 2: the production of evs.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So good on me. I'm trying to read Paul, I'm
- 21:46Speaker 1: taking little steps.
- 21:48Speaker 2: So that's that's a good point. And Volvo actually came
- 21:52Speaker 2: out and said recently, and I think the number was
- 21:55Speaker 2: off the top of my head. Let me just triple
- 21:57Speaker 2: check this while where while we're here, Volvo Electric production
- 22:02Speaker 2: I seventy percent. I'm pretty sure Volvo came out and
- 22:07Speaker 2: said that building an EV produces seventy percent more emissions
- 22:10Speaker 2: than an internal combustion car. So actually did they came
- 22:13Speaker 2: out and said that recently? Now that's true, because well,
- 22:17Speaker 2: You've got a number of reasons. So you have a
- 22:19Speaker 2: lot of precious metals inside these batteries. They're hard to source,
- 22:22Speaker 2: and the process of building this evs the same except
- 22:26Speaker 2: the batteries, because that's where a lot of this a
- 22:29Speaker 2: lot of the bad stuff is. The problem is though,
- 22:31Speaker 2: that once they are produced, as in the day they
- 22:34Speaker 2: roll down the production line, they are going to be
- 22:37Speaker 2: emitting less than an internal combustion car until you reach
- 22:41Speaker 2: a point where those two crossover. So the reason I
- 22:43Speaker 2: say that is every single day the energy grid globally
- 22:46Speaker 2: is getting greener. So here in Australia you have more
- 22:48Speaker 2: renewables coming online where focusing less on coal powered energy,
- 22:53Speaker 2: and then over time your EV will be powered by
- 22:56Speaker 2: green energy as the grid becomes greener, whereas your internal
- 22:59Speaker 2: combustion car, you will always be feeding that with a
- 23:02Speaker 2: fuel that gets burnt and then it emits something into
- 23:05Speaker 2: the atmosphere. So during the production process, yes, an EV
- 23:09Speaker 2: is incredibly energy intensive and bad to produce, but I
- 23:12Speaker 2: think what we'll find is over time, as we rely
- 23:15Speaker 2: less on lithium ion batteries and more on solid state
- 23:17Speaker 2: battery tech that requires less of these precious materials, we
- 23:21Speaker 2: will be in a position where they will actually be
- 23:23Speaker 2: more energy efficient to produce and emit less during that
- 23:26Speaker 2: production process.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I feel like they're already starting that too. A lot
- 23:29Speaker 1: of the interiors and stuff, for instance, it made out
- 23:31Speaker 1: of old plastics and whatnot.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, Like I just had a look at the
- 23:37Speaker 2: new key or EV six the other day and that
- 23:39Speaker 2: basically has carpets that are made from old plastic and
- 23:43Speaker 2: the dashboards made out of bottles and stuff.
- 23:46Speaker 1: So from Paul's house because he has a drinking problem.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Of what is this friend telle the perfect traveler water?
- 23:54Speaker 1: Oh wow, that's what we're saying public.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Okay. His second point was about the batteries, right, yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 2: so he said, tying into that. Same boomers mentioned above
- 24:06Speaker 2: also state that batteries only last ten years and once
- 24:09Speaker 2: they can no longer hold charge, they cannot be recycled
- 24:11Speaker 2: and end up in the ground somewhere. Is this true? No,
- 24:15Speaker 2: So they can absolutely one hundred percent be recycled. So
- 24:17Speaker 2: the way that it works is old batteries from old
- 24:20Speaker 2: evs are currently used in in appliances. They can be
- 24:24Speaker 2: used to power a house for example. Obviously, these batteries
- 24:28Speaker 2: once they get down to around sort of eighty percent.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Their serviceable life becomes reduced because you get less range,
- 24:34Speaker 2: the less you can store in a battery. But if
- 24:36Speaker 2: you can use that battery to store energy overnight for
- 24:39Speaker 2: your house, for example, you don't really care that it
- 24:40Speaker 2: has eighty percent left in it as long as it
- 24:42Speaker 2: runs your house overnight. You find when they get to
- 24:44Speaker 2: the point where they're not usable for energy storage, you
- 24:47Speaker 2: can actually now recycle one hundred percent of the contents
- 24:50Speaker 2: of that battery. So it is expensive, which is why
- 24:54Speaker 2: it's not a great business. At the moment. There really
- 24:56Speaker 2: isn't an incentive to do that. But as governments move
- 24:59Speaker 2: towards incentive this stuff, we'll see more of this happening. So, yes,
- 25:03Speaker 2: you absolutely can recycle batteries at the moment.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Oh, he had a great one with hydrogen, George Is asked.
- 25:09Speaker 2: The mirror has an alleged range of five hundred and
- 25:11Speaker 2: fifty kilometers and can be refueled in a matter of minutes.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Surely this is a better alternative to battery powered evs. Look,
- 25:17Speaker 2: I tend to agree with that. I think hydrogen absolutely
- 25:20Speaker 2: has legs. Whether it's in consumer cars though I don't
- 25:23Speaker 2: know so. One of the big advantages is if you
- 25:26Speaker 2: have a petrol station, surely you can produce hydrogen there,
- 25:29Speaker 2: store it locally, and it can fill cars and off
- 25:32Speaker 2: you go in a matter of minutes. As George says,
- 25:34Speaker 2: the problem is the process of producing hydrogen is incredibly
- 25:38Speaker 2: energy intensive. So if you compare to the way that
- 25:41Speaker 2: you'd power an EV, for example, all you're doing is
- 25:44Speaker 2: plugging in electricity and pumping electricity into the batteries. With hydrogen,
- 25:49Speaker 2: you have to use electricity to create hydrogen, and then
- 25:53Speaker 2: once you've done that, you have to use electricity to
- 25:55Speaker 2: compress and then push that hydrogen into your vehicle. You're
- 26:00Speaker 2: using energy along the way there that you wouldn't be
- 26:03Speaker 2: doing in an EV. That's not so much of an
- 26:05Speaker 2: issue if you're producing that hydrogen with renewables, because who
- 26:09Speaker 2: cares if it's twice as you know, it requires twice
- 26:12Speaker 2: the amount of energy because you've got solar power, wind power,
- 26:15Speaker 2: we don't really care. So it really is just a
- 26:17Speaker 2: process of efficiency. And I think longer term hydrogen will
- 26:21Speaker 2: work really well in commercial applications because you'll be able
- 26:24Speaker 2: to store much more of it to offer longer distance driving,
- 26:27Speaker 2: which you can't really do an EV's at the moment
- 26:29Speaker 2: in the trucking industry, for example, it's just not there yet.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And also with that process, if you go back to
- 26:35Speaker 2: base with your truck, for example, you can refill it
- 26:37Speaker 2: at the depot, which means you don't have to have
- 26:40Speaker 2: these things all over the place.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Do you reckon that hydrogen could be definitely like a
- 26:45Speaker 1: more popular fuel down the road, because I feel like
- 26:49Speaker 1: it hasn't really been. If whoever's doing pr for hydrogen
- 26:53Speaker 1: shouldn't be.
- 26:54Speaker 2: You need a Maybe Jeff Bezos can do it. You've
- 26:57Speaker 2: got Elon Musk for evs.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yes, we need, we need There needs to be an
- 27:01Speaker 1: Amazon hydrogen powered car.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, look I think it needs better marketing. But equally,
- 27:08Speaker 2: you don't have all of the benefits. So, for example,
- 27:11Speaker 2: at the moment with EV's you have hugely quick acceleration.
- 27:15Speaker 2: You don't have that with hydrogens. Hydrogens are effectively just
- 27:18Speaker 2: an EV. The hydrogen power plant is running an electric
- 27:22Speaker 2: motor and they use a small battery as well, so
- 27:24Speaker 2: they are effectively just an EV but it's just creating
- 27:28Speaker 2: hydrogen currently isn't very energy efficient.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Do you think evs will have a place in the
- 27:32Speaker 1: off road space? Interesting. I think it's already happening. Sort
- 27:36Speaker 1: of rivian that is a company that doesn't really produce
- 27:39Speaker 1: profit cars, but they're doing that right, Yeah, they are.
- 27:42Speaker 2: And part of his question asks about salt water and
- 27:45Speaker 2: creek crossings batteries under the floor. Waiting depth look to
- 27:48Speaker 2: be honest. As long as it's sealed, it really doesn't
- 27:50Speaker 2: make a difference. I mean, salt water in a diff
- 27:53Speaker 2: breather is not good news. So it's any car as
- 27:57Speaker 2: long as you don't get water in parts that you
- 27:59Speaker 2: don't want water, it's fine. Obviously electricity and water don't mix.
- 28:03Speaker 2: But again, as long as it's all sealed, it won't
- 28:05Speaker 2: be an issue. Waiting depth should actually be better in
- 28:09Speaker 2: an EV because in theory you don't have those diff
- 28:11Speaker 2: breathers and you don't have air filters and stuff like
- 28:15Speaker 2: that that you're trying to stop water getting into. So
- 28:18Speaker 2: if anything, they should be better with sort of driving
- 28:21Speaker 2: through water crossings. In terms of off roading itself, the
- 28:24Speaker 2: only thing I would be concerned about is running out
- 28:26Speaker 2: of power. And the thing with evs is before they
- 28:29Speaker 2: run out of they don't just literally just stop. They
- 28:31Speaker 2: become slower and slower. It's an issue. If you're on
- 28:35Speaker 2: a mountain somewhere off roading and you've run out of
- 28:38Speaker 2: power in the valley and you can't actually use any
- 28:41Speaker 2: electricity to get yourself up because it just doesn't have
- 28:43Speaker 2: any that's obviously going to be an issue because you
- 28:45Speaker 2: can't just run a jerry can over to the car
- 28:47Speaker 2: and get someone to help out. So that is something
- 28:50Speaker 2: to think about. But again, longer term, you're going to
- 28:52Speaker 2: find that there will be ev charges of caravan parks
- 28:55Speaker 2: and places nearby that you can fill up at before
- 28:57Speaker 2: you actually go on your off road journey.
- 28:59Speaker 1: That's pretty much it. Whatever and out. Yes, we should
- 29:03Speaker 1: think about a prize, yes, let's Yeah, we're trying to
- 29:06Speaker 1: guess the comp is to try and guess can't number one?
- 29:10Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I guess can't number one.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Now there's some clues in there.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I really am just it is so beyond me that
- 29:32Speaker 2: I really I don't know. It could be like an
- 29:36Speaker 2: FX Holden or something. It's it sounds old and you
- 29:39Speaker 2: said it wasn't a four cylinder, so it might be
- 29:41Speaker 2: a six cylinder. It doesn't sound like a V eight
- 29:44Speaker 2: and it sounds old, so yeah, I don't know. Well,
- 29:47Speaker 2: contact at the Drive Show dot Com today you. I
- 29:51Speaker 2: don't know what the prize is, but well I've got.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It's a date with Paul, and yes he will do anything.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Generally there's a look but you can't touch policy. But
- 30:01Speaker 1: with Paul dinners on, I would.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Like someone to touch me at some point, would be nice.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Wife doesn't anything. She doesn't listen to this either. She
- 30:11Speaker 2: will never hear that. Yeah, I've got a whole bunch
- 30:13Speaker 2: of stuff on my desk, so let's see. Yeah, if
- 30:16Speaker 2: anyone enters to start with. But if they do, I'll
- 30:19Speaker 2: find something to send you on my desk.
- 30:21Speaker 1: God, you better deliver. I hope you don't rock up
- 30:23Speaker 1: and it's just shit like it's just stuff from the
- 30:26Speaker 1: Christmas party that the friend till perfect traveler.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Yes.
- 30:31Speaker 1: You are not. There is nothing perfect about traveling with
- 30:34Speaker 1: this thing one. It makes a lot of sounds. I mean,
- 30:36Speaker 1: it's good because you can squish it into well. Paul
- 30:41Speaker 1: uses who contacted the Drive Show dot Com Dot you
- 30:46Speaker 1: and we'll
- 30:47Speaker 2: Chat to you all in a fortnight
