- 1:07Speaker 1: New Study Studies says this is some Loyola Marymount. It
- 1:10Speaker 1: has to do with LA County. Now, whenever I mentioned
- 1:13Speaker 1: LA City or LA County, that does not exclude Orange County.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's just LA County LA City are more problematic. If
- 1:22Speaker 1: there is a ten problem, let's say in the city
- 1:25Speaker 1: of Orange or Santa Anna our coast to Mesa, that
- 1:29Speaker 1: means it's a twelve in LA. I just wanted to
- 1:32Speaker 1: point out LA is the poster child of everything that's
- 1:35Speaker 1: wrong in southern California in many cases. Okay, new study
- 1:39Speaker 1: from Loyola Marymount a vast majority of LA County residents
- 1:44Speaker 1: or an agreement I mean across the board on one
- 1:47Speaker 1: specific topic, things are not going so great. Okay, This
- 1:54Speaker 1: is a study among registered voters in LA County that
- 1:58Speaker 1: they say that the government is off track, and which
- 2:02Speaker 1: way is it going to get on track? And here
- 2:07Speaker 1: is the general consensus. And I guess it makes some sense.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Things are perceived as so bad that we need sweeping
- 2:16Speaker 1: monumental changes. None of his bits and pieces and band
- 2:21Speaker 1: aid stuff, I mean sweeping changes.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And here's the analogy.
- 2:25Speaker 1: The Great Depression hit and Franklin Roosevelt became president. He
- 2:30Speaker 1: reinvented America, social Security, the SEC, various governmental programs, Civilian
- 2:40Speaker 1: conservation Corps. I mean governmental intervention in a major way.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Where beforehand the government stayed out of people's business. The
- 2:50Speaker 1: government did not do what it does today, monumental changes
- 2:53Speaker 1: to a lesser degree.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Ronald Reagan, who.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Got rid of an enormous amount of regulations that was
- 3:01Speaker 1: sweeping change. What Margaret Thatcher did in England totally turned
- 3:07Speaker 1: the country around. And this is what the people of
- 3:10Speaker 1: Los Angeles, La County are saying. And by the way,
- 3:13Speaker 1: the same thing would go in Orange County, or Ventura
- 3:15Speaker 1: County or the Inland Empire.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I don't think there's any surprise at all.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Right now, voters have an extremely low confidence in elected officials,
- 3:25Speaker 1: who the voters say put the interests of the population
- 3:28Speaker 1: ahead of the big money interest, which is absolutely true.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And here is the way elections, or right now, the
- 3:35Speaker 1: elections work. And this is without a value judgment. Okay,
- 3:39Speaker 1: Republicans who believe there may be something wrong with the
- 3:43Speaker 1: administration now, it used to be that democrats, even though
- 3:47Speaker 1: they are democrats, would rip into a democratic administration saying
- 3:50Speaker 1: I disagree that's not true, or even though I am
- 3:54Speaker 1: in favor of that program.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I'm an n in favor of this program.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Republicans are in lockstep, where you don't go off track
- 4:04Speaker 1: on one item.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Why is that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Because they want to get re elected and what does
- 4:13Speaker 1: that mean? They need money to get re elected outside
- 4:17Speaker 1: of they need Donald Trump.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And let's forget Donald Trump for a moment. The lobbyists
- 4:21Speaker 2: come in.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And say, we're going to give you two million dollars
- 4:24Speaker 1: through your campaign, and here's what we want you to do.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And that's precisely what the politicians do.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Big money interests are controlling and I don't know how
- 4:36Speaker 1: many people would disagree with that. The point is is
- 4:40Speaker 1: that we agree, and that's across the board. We agree
- 4:44Speaker 1: that our political leadership. And I'm not talking about on
- 4:48Speaker 1: a presidential letter level. Yeah, maybe only the presidential level.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And I think there would be some that would say
- 4:55Speaker 1: that even on a presidential level, big money does influence.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But that big money is Donald Trump. He does not
- 5:02Speaker 1: have to worry about donations. He does not have to
- 5:04Speaker 1: worry about money coming in at all. The rest of
- 5:07Speaker 1: the politicians do, and they want to get reelected. That's
- 5:11Speaker 1: more important. Here's the bottom line is it is more
- 5:14Speaker 1: important for a politician to become re elected than for
- 5:18Speaker 1: the good of the country or good of his constituency
- 5:22Speaker 1: or her constituency. And frankly, we're up to our eyeballs
- 5:27Speaker 1: in that we're done with that. We do not want
- 5:29Speaker 1: that to happen anymore, and it's done, not any going
- 5:32Speaker 1: to be these little bits and pieces, you know, the
- 5:35Speaker 1: homeless situation. Let's build one shelter over there, Let's build
- 5:39Speaker 1: one little housing project of thirteen homes over there, and
- 5:43Speaker 1: that's going to help. No. Sweeping, massive changes is what
- 5:49Speaker 1: we want. Until they happen. And then again, what happens
- 5:53Speaker 1: the detracted detractors go crazy, or power is taken away,
- 5:58Speaker 1: or influence is taken away, or the law changed to
- 6:00Speaker 1: hurt big money interests, and what happens, Oh, well, let's
- 6:05Speaker 1: rethink this. I I don't know about this all right.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I want to tell you about a story, a political story,
- 6:12Speaker 1: for a moment. It's kind of interesting. First of all,
- 6:15Speaker 1: in southern California, we have cities that are associated with
- 6:19Speaker 1: certain ethnicities. Glendale, for example, has a huge Armenian population. No,
- 6:24Speaker 1: I won't make the joke about gillett raisers here and
- 6:28Speaker 1: the women not gonna happen. There's Little Tokyo, for example,
- 6:33Speaker 1: in downtown la certain areas are designated and just where
- 6:37Speaker 1: ethnic folks, people of the same ethnicity congregator become part of.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Westminster is a city, and it is Vietnamese. This is
- 6:45Speaker 1: where the Vietnamese, the boat people came and it's the
- 6:48Speaker 1: population of Westminster is primarily Vietnamese or overwhelmingly Vietnamese. Vietnamese
- 6:53Speaker 1: immigrants are very conservative. They're for the most part Republican.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And so there is a small street parallel to the
- 7:02Speaker 1: Vietnam War Memorial in Westminster is going to bear a
- 7:07Speaker 1: brand new name, Charlie kirk way.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:13Speaker 1: There was a meeting of the city council all kinds
- 7:17Speaker 1: of accusation as a partisan politics debate over the role
- 7:21Speaker 1: of local government, and at the end of the meeting
- 7:25Speaker 1: the leaders in Westminster the city Council voted four to
- 7:28Speaker 1: one to partially rename All American Way to Charlie kirkway
- 7:37Speaker 1: and what his There's still the official name, of course,
- 7:39Speaker 1: still All American waying not necessarily of course, but in
- 7:43Speaker 1: three inch font below the street name is the name
- 7:48Speaker 1: Charlie Kirkwayer. Now the mayor Chi Charlie Wynn, a Republican
- 7:55Speaker 1: who is running for Congress next year, said the reason
- 7:58Speaker 1: he voted for it because Kirk reflects the values that
- 8:01Speaker 1: make Westminster truly special. Pride in our country, belief in
- 8:05Speaker 1: our freedom, and the spirit of civic engagement. One of
- 8:09Speaker 1: the things about immigrant communities and immigrants in general, they
- 8:12Speaker 1: are fanatically pro American. Those that become American American citizens
- 8:17Speaker 1: who were born here don't appreciate the fanaticism in a
- 8:23Speaker 1: positive way of immigrants who come from other countries. If
- 8:28Speaker 1: you live in another country that is not so good
- 8:30Speaker 1: and you come to the United States, let me tell
- 8:32Speaker 1: you believe in this country in a big way. I
- 8:35Speaker 1: think natural born citizens sort of take it for granted,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and I in many cases take it for granted because
- 8:41Speaker 1: I was naturalized at the age of eleven, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 1: since I started remembering. But in the meantime, this is
- 8:47Speaker 1: an immigrant population, very conservative and looking at this particular city,
- 8:52Speaker 1: looking at Kirk in a way that well almost deifies him.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And it's a whole range of emotions. Of course, were
- 9:01Speaker 1: triggered by the death of Charlie Kirk, and I didn't
- 9:05Speaker 1: understand it, and to some extent, I still don't the
- 9:09Speaker 1: levels of this. And so here it gets really interesting
- 9:15Speaker 1: because there was one one Democrat, and that's the mayor,
- 9:21Speaker 1: who voted against designating the street in Kirk's honor, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: when the proposal came down, he appeared like.
- 9:28Speaker 2: At a loss for words. He goes, I don't understand what
- 9:30Speaker 2: you're going doing.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Kirk didn't live in Westminster, he had no ties the community.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And what he did is he accused his colleagues of
- 9:38Speaker 1: exploiting Kirk's death to score political points.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Now is that true or not.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think that there are people, and maybe on this
- 9:47Speaker 1: city council who legitimately believe that Kirk is the epitome,
- 9:51Speaker 1: is the face of American values, almost to the point
- 9:56Speaker 1: of deification. And let's go to the other side. Council
- 10:01Speaker 1: member Amy Fawn West criticized the font as not being
- 10:06Speaker 1: big enough on those signs. We need a bigger sign
- 10:11Speaker 1: as a way to honor Kirk. It's an inadequate way,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and she introduced to designate October fourteenth, Kirk's birthday, as
- 10:21Speaker 1: Charlie Kirk Day in Westminster. That past so you're going
- 10:26Speaker 1: the city of Westminster, it's Charlie Kirk Day. And she said,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I'd like to take this opportunity to recognize Charlie Kirk
- 10:33Speaker 1: as an American patriot and steadfast compend champion for freedom
- 10:38Speaker 1: of speech.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And this is what's going on in America.
- 10:43Speaker 1: This is emblematic, emblematic of what we're seeing. And Charlie
- 10:49Speaker 1: Kirk has become a well turning point, if you will,
- 10:55Speaker 1: as to the politics of this country, the polarization. He
- 10:58Speaker 1: is either a guy who is too conservative and way
- 11:03Speaker 1: right wing to the point of being ridiculous, or he
- 11:06Speaker 1: has literally become deified to the point where it's almost
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jesus I believe I see that.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean, it is crazy stuff.
- 11:14Speaker 1: There's also a move to have his face put on
- 11:16Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore, right next to Jefferson. And the only reason
- 11:21Speaker 1: that it's not is people realize there isn't Roome. We'd
- 11:25Speaker 1: have to get rid of one of the presidents. Well,
- 11:27Speaker 1: that's okay, Charlie Kirk is that important to us? Obviously
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm exaggerating here, but the point I'm making is I
- 11:34Speaker 1: think it's almost to that level among those people.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He has become a deity.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And the analogy here I'm going to make to Abraham Lincoln,
- 11:43Speaker 1: not in terms of how politics or whatever. Abraham Lincoln
- 11:47Speaker 1: was vilified during his presidency by so many Americans. The
- 11:53Speaker 1: day he was assassinated, he went into the pantheons of myth.
- 11:59Speaker 2: He became a myth. He was no longer a human being.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And I'm going to say the same thing about Charlie
- 12:05Speaker 1: Kirk after his assassination. He meant so much to so
- 12:09Speaker 1: many people. He wasn't just a person with views that
- 12:12Speaker 1: are appreciated amongst conservatives. He became on a level that
- 12:17Speaker 1: is above that. Jfk Right, John F. Kennedy won the
- 12:23Speaker 1: election over Nixon by a hair I mean by literally
- 12:29Speaker 1: just almost no votes. I think it was one hundred
- 12:32Speaker 1: thousand votes. Something completely crazy. After the fact, after he
- 12:37Speaker 1: was assassinated, if you do a survey.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Everybody voted for John F. Kennedy.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He stopped being a political figure. By the way, does
- 12:45Speaker 1: anybody know if I were to ask what were John F.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Kennedy's politics, I don't know. I think that's what's happening.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So the city of.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Westminster, great Vietnamese food, by the way, it's great fu
- 13:01Speaker 1: or foe.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Okay, so much for that, all right.
- 13:07Speaker 1: The Macy's Day Parade, the Thanksgiving Day parade happens tomorrow
- 13:15Speaker 1: and millions of us, millions of Americans are going to
- 13:18Speaker 1: tune in, and it ends the same way every year.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You have the roar of the crowds, you have this
- 13:24Speaker 1: blizzard of confetti, and then Santa Claus who ends at
- 13:28Speaker 1: ways goodbye to everybody.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Ho ho ho ho. All right.
- 13:32Speaker 1: What we don't see, and this is the I love
- 13:35Speaker 1: the backstory stuff. What we don't see is what volunteers
- 13:40Speaker 1: do is take those floating icons, you know, those giant
- 13:44Speaker 1: balloons and the shape of Snoopy and other character, Santa Claus,
- 13:51Speaker 1: all those characters, and they're enormous.
- 13:53Speaker 2: They're these huge.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Balloons and filled with helium, and they're held up by
- 13:59Speaker 1: they're held they're floating, and.
- 14:01Speaker 2: They're connected to strings. Strings hold them up.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And what ends up happening is they have volunteers that
- 14:07Speaker 1: walk along holding these ropes that actually keep the balloons
- 14:11Speaker 1: from floating away because they're helium.
- 14:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So what you don't see is they are now taking down.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Those icons, those balloons.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Take them down to the ground, unzip these industrial grade zippers,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and this gust of helium comes out and then they
- 14:33Speaker 1: dive right on top of the balloon to get the
- 14:37Speaker 1: helium out, much like you see one of those kids
- 14:41Speaker 1: centers where you dive into the balls, the phone balls.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That's what they do, and.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Then the balloon releases the helium. They're also told because
- 14:52Speaker 1: you all that helium that is coming out, you don't
- 14:56Speaker 1: want to sound like or maybe you do want to
- 14:58Speaker 1: sound like Alvin and the Chickmunks because you know, you
- 15:02Speaker 1: get that really high voice which is so much fun
- 15:04Speaker 1: with helium, which you do with kids with helium balloons.
- 15:08Speaker 1: The problem is there is so much helium that those
- 15:12Speaker 1: volunteers who work say, you will simply go unconscious. It's
- 15:17Speaker 1: not a question of sounding with a high pitched voice.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You will go unconscious. So that's one of the big
- 15:24Speaker 1: big things that are involved. By the way, it takes
- 15:30Speaker 1: ninety minutes to inflate these balloons and it takes just
- 15:34Speaker 1: fifteen minutes to deflate these balloons. Why because the pump
- 15:39Speaker 1: of helium is going in and moving the gas into
- 15:43Speaker 1: the balloon and it slowly inflates like massive balloons do.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And what they do when it hits the ground they
- 15:50Speaker 1: grab those ropes bring it to the ground is they
- 15:53Speaker 1: dive right on top of it, they take a swan
- 15:55Speaker 1: dive and the helium escapes fifteen minutes. And by the way,
- 15:59Speaker 1: the reason I'm talking about this, according to the director,
- 16:04Speaker 1: the urgency is real because if the team doesn't deflate
- 16:09Speaker 1: fast enough, the next balloon comes right over them and
- 16:14Speaker 1: walks on top, and the parade just keeps on coming.
- 16:19Speaker 1: And it's like when you get to the bottom of
- 16:21Speaker 1: an escalator. If you stop there and stand, everybody's coming
- 16:24Speaker 1: behind you, so you have to keep on moving. And
- 16:28Speaker 1: so these are hundreds of thousands of yards of cubic
- 16:31Speaker 1: feet of helium and dozens of floats and just fans
- 16:36Speaker 1: all over the place, two and a half miles going
- 16:38Speaker 1: down mid time, midtown Manhattan, and this started in nineteen
- 16:43Speaker 1: twenty four. In the late twenties is when the balloons
- 16:46Speaker 1: came out, and that's of course the iconic representation of
- 16:50Speaker 1: the Macy's Day balloon. And it used to be they
- 16:54Speaker 1: would just let it go in the air. They would
- 16:58Speaker 1: just let the balloons go until a pilot grabbed one
- 17:04Speaker 1: while flying. Now the pilot lost it, went into the
- 17:08Speaker 1: drink but survived. But after that they decided they weren't
- 17:13Speaker 1: going to release the balloons into the air.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And so here's what they're fascinating. The balloons. The flate.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Sorry into six foot crates that collapse small enough to
- 17:29Speaker 1: go through the Lincoln to tunnel. Otherwise they can't get through.
- 17:34Speaker 1: So five thousand volunteers began with Macy's employees in nineteen
- 17:40Speaker 1: twenty four. Now it's friends and family and volunteers. Training
- 17:46Speaker 1: is months. It's called flight school, and they practice maneuvering
- 17:52Speaker 1: around obstacles and for quick deflation.
- 17:55Speaker 2: They know what they're doing and everybody knows the drill.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And if you think that this is just a local parade,
- 18:03Speaker 1: NBC just extended as contracts with Macy's for sixty million
- 18:08Speaker 1: dollars ago. Pretty impressive. Okay, so much for that. There's more,
- 18:13Speaker 1: but I'm not going to get into it. I just
- 18:15Speaker 1: like background stuff I wanted to share with you. If
- 18:17Speaker 1: you're going to see the parade, do you guys watch
- 18:18Speaker 1: the parade, Neil, are you a parade watcher?
- 18:20Speaker 2: Eh? Yeah?
- 18:22Speaker 1: Okay, Amy parade watcher, yes, oh sore you go?
- 18:26Speaker 2: And parade watcher sure wow? And Cono parade watcher. Not
- 18:31Speaker 2: a chance. You ruined it. You ruined it. The fifteenth
- 18:34Speaker 2: Annual Pastathon is here.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Chef Bruno's Cherry Catarina's Club now provides twenty five thousand
- 18:40Speaker 1: meals every week to kids in need in southern California.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Without you, it just simply doesn't happen. So our live
- 18:46Speaker 1: broadcast we do it every year giving Tuesday, December second,
- 18:49Speaker 1: we'll be broadcasting starting with wake Up Call at five
- 18:52Speaker 1: all the way to eight pm with Tim Conway Junior
- 18:56Speaker 1: at the Anaheim White House.
- 18:58Speaker 2: And there are tons of ways you can help. Just
- 19:00Speaker 2: go to Pastathon.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Just go to KFIAM six forty dot com slash pastathon.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And there's another way you can do it, and this
- 19:08Speaker 1: is why you're having fun. Go to Yamavah Resort and Casino,
- 19:11Speaker 1: get out there play and when you cash your winning
- 19:13Speaker 1: tickets at the kiosk, it'll ask you.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Do you want to donate your change.
- 19:19Speaker 1: You say yes, and then you pick Katerina's Club from
- 19:22Speaker 1: the four options on the screen.
- 19:25Speaker 2: There is a fifth option.
- 19:26Speaker 1: When you've lost money, you ask the kiosk to give
- 19:30Speaker 1: you money, and that works not at all, by the way.
- 19:34Speaker 1: They only take your money, they don't give you any back.
- 19:38Speaker 1: But at least you can donate to Katerina's Club at
- 19:40Speaker 1: yamavab All right, so when do we do Neil with
- 19:47Speaker 1: wild Fork?
- 19:50Speaker 2: You want me to tell people about Wildfork? Now, I
- 19:54Speaker 2: don't know.
- 19:54Speaker 1: It just says, you know, seven fifty before the segment,
- 19:57Speaker 1: So I don't know, Kno.
- 19:58Speaker 2: When you want to do this, you can do it now?
- 20:02Speaker 2: All right? We do it now? Colin runs is so
- 20:05Speaker 2: I mean he is our guy, right, get it?
- 20:08Speaker 3: But yes, just a reminder that you can go to
- 20:11Speaker 3: a southern California Wild Fork Foods location, of which there
- 20:15Speaker 3: are eleven Costa Mesa and Sanitas and Sino Ounington Beach,
- 20:19Speaker 3: Laguna de Gal and so on and so forth.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And you can go to any of.
- 20:23Speaker 3: These wild Fork Foods locations and simply say KFI Pastathon
- 20:29Speaker 3: when you check out, and fifteen percent of your purchase
- 20:33Speaker 3: will generously be automatically donated to the KFI Pastathon for
- 20:38Speaker 3: Katina's Club. They've obviously been a great partner with thanks
- 20:42Speaker 3: grilling and the events that we do on the show,
- 20:45Speaker 3: So big thanks to Wildfork Foods for doing that. Again,
