- 2:29Speaker 4: I want to welcome to the show, Mayor of the
- 2:32Speaker 4: City of Hurricane Scott Edwards. Good morning, Sarah, Welcome to
- 2:34Speaker 4: the show.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Good morning, sir. Hope you're doing well today.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I am, and I hope you are as well. I
- 2:40Speaker 4: want to start with and we are going to talk
- 2:43Speaker 4: about some positive things, because I think right now we
- 2:46Speaker 4: probably need a little positivity, and we'll get that a
- 2:48Speaker 4: little bit later on. But you saw, like everybody else yesterday,
- 2:51Speaker 4: Mayor the sad news out of Utah yesterday, a tragedy.
- 2:58Speaker 4: No matter what your political persuasion or at least in
- 3:00Speaker 4: my opinion, it should be your thoughts.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Well, I'm actually real quick. I'm going to pivot back
- 3:07Speaker 5: to nine eleven and talk about that for a moment,
- 3:11Speaker 5: and I want to compare something. You know, you know,
- 3:13Speaker 5: twenty four years ago, you know, the militant Alamic terrorist group,
- 3:18Speaker 5: you know, let Bosam b in Lauden the attacked attacked
- 3:20Speaker 5: us and nearly three thousand people died in the nine
- 3:24Speaker 5: eleven attacks, and and you know, everybody said, hey, it's
- 3:27Speaker 5: a it's a new type of war that we're that
- 3:30Speaker 5: we're fighting. It's it's a new type of war. And
- 3:32Speaker 5: America was shaken on that day twenty four years ago,
- 3:36Speaker 5: absolutely shaken. And then what happened yesterday, and and even
- 3:41Speaker 5: with it all the other stuff, it's been happening to
- 3:44Speaker 5: get a twenty three year old Ukrainian that was stabbed
- 3:46Speaker 5: to death three times, and in Charlotte just recently, and
- 3:50Speaker 5: everybody just sit and watched and didn't help her. And
- 3:52Speaker 5: then Charlie was assassinated yesterday. And I mean, this is
- 3:58Speaker 5: this is a new I hate to say, it's like
- 4:00Speaker 5: a new type of war. America is going to be
- 4:02Speaker 5: forever changed by this. By what happened yesterday, We're shaken again,
- 4:07Speaker 5: you know, like we were twenty four years ago. We
- 4:09Speaker 5: were absolutely shaken to the bone now. And it just
- 4:13Speaker 5: goes through me that someone, no matter what side you
- 4:17Speaker 5: were on, if you like Charlie Kirker or didn't like
- 4:20Speaker 5: his politics, that doesn't matter. He was simply having a
- 4:23Speaker 5: discussion out of college. And even folks that didn't like
- 4:28Speaker 5: what he said, a lot, most of the folks I've
- 4:31Speaker 5: talked to, they still respected Charlie kirk because he was
- 4:33Speaker 5: a master at at just talking to especially college kids
- 4:38Speaker 5: and debates. And he was just doing what is just
- 4:41Speaker 5: talking and he got murdered by talking. That's absolutely horrendous
- 4:47Speaker 5: and I hate that. And it comes twenty four years
- 4:51Speaker 5: after the the nine eleven attacks. I'll never forget people
- 4:54Speaker 5: saying it's a new type of war. Now we're it's again.
- 4:58Speaker 5: America's shaken, as you can tell, shake him well.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And I'll say this, Mayor, and you could agree or disagree.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I am a lot more concerned about the war that
- 5:11Speaker 4: America is having on other Americans than I am on
- 5:15Speaker 4: anything overseas.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Correct. And when I said it's a new type of war,
- 5:19Speaker 5: it's within us. It's within the United States, within our boundaries.
- 5:24Speaker 5: And I hate that. I mean, again, no matter your politics,
- 5:28Speaker 5: this man was simply it was free speech and having
- 5:34Speaker 5: a debate. And even people that don't like him and
- 5:37Speaker 5: didn't like him, they debated him back and forth, and
- 5:40Speaker 5: some of them I watch him a lot, some of
- 5:43Speaker 5: them that absolutely on the other side, far left, would say,
- 5:47Speaker 5: they would smile afterwards and say can I still get
- 5:49Speaker 5: one of your hats? Or can I get something? So
- 5:51Speaker 5: they didn't hate him. They didn't agree with him. They
- 5:54Speaker 5: absolutely did not agree with him, but they didn't hate
- 5:56Speaker 5: him and want him dead.
- 5:58Speaker 4: So as you know through me, yeah, I know, I
- 6:02Speaker 4: know America devastated.
- 6:03Speaker 5: I'm devastated.
- 6:04Speaker 4: I know, Mayor, and you and I had set this
- 6:06Speaker 4: interview up a couple of days ago, following your appearance
- 6:08Speaker 4: on Metro News Midday, and we were texting back and
- 6:10Speaker 4: forth this morning about whether you wanted to continue with it,
- 6:13Speaker 4: and I appreciate you continue with I want to pivot
- 6:15Speaker 4: now to nine and to nine to eleven. You talked about,
- 6:20Speaker 4: you know, where we were as America, and listeners have
- 6:23Speaker 4: heard me say this over and over again. Uh, and
- 6:27Speaker 4: we remember nine to eleven, Mayor Edwards. Uh, But I
- 6:31Speaker 4: but I remember nine to twelve.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Do you remember nine well?
- 6:35Speaker 4: Do you remember nine twelve?
- 6:36Speaker 5: Well? There were so many United States flags American flags everywhere.
- 6:43Speaker 5: People loved everyone. I don't care which side of the eye,
- 6:45Speaker 5: which which where your politics were. We all came together,
- 6:49Speaker 5: we all hugged each other, we loved each other, and
- 6:53Speaker 5: what a great I mean, you hate to say that
- 6:54Speaker 5: was a that was wonderful on that day and the
- 6:57Speaker 5: and the weeks after, because we were we were Americans,
- 7:01Speaker 5: and we were one, and we have went so far
- 7:05Speaker 5: past that that it's unfathomable to me how we got
- 7:09Speaker 5: to where we're at today.
- 7:10Speaker 4: You're exactly right. We're talking to Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards.
- 7:13Speaker 4: The Dave Island Show on five. Adie Live has brought
- 7:15Speaker 4: to you parted by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by
- 7:17Speaker 4: WVU Medicine, a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles than to be
- 7:20Speaker 4: on the State. Jack have alatest episodes of wv Metro
- 7:23Speaker 4: News Dot common of the podcast menu. Let's transition a
- 7:26Speaker 4: little bit. I mentioned earlier that I had you on
- 7:29Speaker 4: Metro News Midday. You are a mayor this week on
- 7:31Speaker 4: Mayor Monday. We feature a different mayor on the show
- 7:33Speaker 4: during the two o'clock hour every day, and I appreciate
- 7:35Speaker 4: you taking time out of your schedule, and in that interview,
- 7:39Speaker 4: you dropped something on us earlier about a big event
- 7:43Speaker 4: coming to Hurricane the twenty twenty five Hybricon Games. I
- 7:47Speaker 4: had never heard of it, but not exactly the target
- 7:50Speaker 4: audience here. I looked it up. I googled it. I
- 7:54Speaker 4: you know, your crew there, including Amanda, sent me some
- 7:57Speaker 4: stuff on it. This is a huge event coming to
- 8:01Speaker 4: the Kanav Valley and even even more Huger. I'm gonna
- 8:04Speaker 4: just make my English teachers drive off the road somewhere
- 8:07Speaker 4: about the guy that's coming to her and that's putting
- 8:09Speaker 4: this whole thing together.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Yes, I will agree with you. It is more Huger,
- 8:13Speaker 5: more a huge church. We'll both drive our English teachers crazy.
- 8:17Speaker 5: So Austin Alexander, now he's an elite athlete, he's a veteran,
- 8:21Speaker 5: he's a huge social media influencer. He gets somewhere between
- 8:25Speaker 5: eighty and one hundred million views per month.
- 8:28Speaker 4: That's per month mayor per month per.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Month, that's per month. And he puts on the Hybercon Games.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Last year it was on Catalina Island in California. And
- 8:40Speaker 5: what it is a it's a group of forty eight
- 8:43Speaker 5: extremely elite athletes that they actually have to have to
- 8:47Speaker 5: they can't just sign up and they participate. They have
- 8:50Speaker 5: to go through a lot of stuff before he even
- 8:51Speaker 5: allows them in. They have to qualify and they have
- 8:54Speaker 5: to pay to be in and all that. And we
- 8:58Speaker 5: have been able to convince him to come to Hurricane.
- 9:02Speaker 5: And Matt Stevens was shot by ore Fitness. He's been
- 9:06Speaker 5: a huge, huge part of that and he knows Austin
- 9:09Speaker 5: and it's just wonderful that he's gonna bring the Hybricon
- 9:12Speaker 5: Games to Hurricane. And that's October twenty second through the
- 9:15Speaker 5: twenty fifth. And just to give you an idea of Dave.
- 9:18Speaker 5: I know most of these things you're familiar with because
- 9:20Speaker 5: you do them in the evening. Well like, for instance,
- 9:25Speaker 5: the Grit Day, the log chop, ax throwing, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 5: ride through town. They're gonna be on bikes, they're gonna
- 9:32Speaker 5: be on Miexed Mountain trails, They're they're gonna be I'm
- 9:36Speaker 5: trying to see what else. So I'm here on my list.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Here there's gonna be like a Survivor day, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 5: where they all day long they have to survive. They
- 9:43Speaker 5: have to build fires, they have to knife an ax throw,
- 9:46Speaker 5: boathon shooting. I mean, there's there's all these extreme events
- 9:52Speaker 5: where they have to lift, all these heavy weights, all
- 9:54Speaker 5: this stuff that you and I don't do.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Day I'll say that, but I watched it on TV.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Ones Yes to me too. It's way more than what
- 10:02Speaker 5: I'm just saying here. There's so many things that he
- 10:04Speaker 5: has not announced, and he won't announce until they get here. Yeah,
- 10:08Speaker 5: but it's extreme, extreme elite athletes, and I don't see
- 10:13Speaker 5: how they do it.
- 10:14Speaker 4: And the following that this guy and I did a
- 10:16Speaker 4: little deep dive, you know, with the information that Amanda
- 10:19Speaker 4: in your office sent me, I mean again, we're talking
- 10:22Speaker 4: about somebody who has followers of eighty to one hundred
- 10:26Speaker 4: million people that follow this guy and follow these sports.
- 10:30Speaker 4: And look, I'm a sports fanatic. You know that about me,
- 10:33Speaker 4: mayor baseball, football, I love it all. This is a
- 10:36Speaker 4: whole different level of what these people are doing.
- 10:38Speaker 5: It's a whole different level. And this is an international competition.
- 10:42Speaker 5: We know right now there's one from France, two from
- 10:44Speaker 5: the UK, and one from Mexico that will be participating,
- 10:47Speaker 5: along with forty some other elites that have made the
- 10:50Speaker 5: cut to get in. And here's how popular he is.
- 10:53Speaker 5: And I knew he was popular, and he had he
- 10:56Speaker 5: came a couple of weeks ago for Rally in the Valley,
- 10:59Speaker 5: which was another lead athlete event we have in Hurricane
- 11:01Speaker 5: in Putnam County, and we were at the we were
- 11:04Speaker 5: at the way Pull at the Valley Park and there
- 11:05Speaker 5: were three lifeguards working that day because all these elite
- 11:09Speaker 5: athletes were in the water and you know, we had
- 11:11Speaker 5: to have lifeguards on duty. So afterwards, I brought the
- 11:14Speaker 5: three lifeguards. These are three high school kids, two from
- 11:16Speaker 5: Hurricane one Winnfield. I said, hey, would you all like
- 11:19Speaker 5: to meet? You all know who that guy is. And
- 11:21Speaker 5: they're like, oh, we follow him, we love him. That's
- 11:23Speaker 5: Austin Alexander. I mean all three of these two boys
- 11:27Speaker 5: and one girl, they all following that all Austin. And
- 11:31Speaker 5: I've I've spoken to a lot of high school students
- 11:34Speaker 5: since then, since a couple of weeks ago. Nearly everybody
- 11:36Speaker 5: I know follows this guy.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 4: It's it's amazing. And and the amount of people that
- 11:42Speaker 4: follow this sort of thing that are going to come
- 11:45Speaker 4: into Hurricane, and not just Hurricane but the surrounding area
- 11:48Speaker 4: is because I mean, Hurricane's not going to be able
- 11:50Speaker 4: to hold all this thing as far as the people
- 11:51Speaker 4: that are going to come in for this. So you're
- 11:53Speaker 4: going to see it's going to help out Barbersville, and
- 11:55Speaker 4: it's going to help out Saint Albans in South Charleston
- 11:58Speaker 4: and all these other communities.
- 12:00Speaker 5: You know, we you know, Meek's Mountain Trails, which started
- 12:03Speaker 5: in twenty eighteen has really been the catalyst for all this.
- 12:07Speaker 5: My friend Brandon Dorner planned one little tiny season, started
- 12:10Speaker 5: digging trails in twenty eighteen with these two little kids.
- 12:14Speaker 5: And now look where we're at today. And you know
- 12:16Speaker 5: Brandon and the story behind that, that's a story for
- 12:19Speaker 5: a different day. But he planned one little seed. We have,
- 12:23Speaker 5: you know, thirty six miles of hand dug trails, forty
- 12:27Speaker 5: thousand man hours and all these events continue to be
- 12:31Speaker 5: held here in Hurak, and it's the gym of Hreaken
- 12:33Speaker 5: for sure. And that's why they want to be here
- 12:36Speaker 5: is really for two reasons. We have the facilities and
- 12:41Speaker 5: we're welcoming, and that's what we keep hearing from everybody.
- 12:44Speaker 5: We are so welcoming compared to other places they go.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Now, what's the dates of this again, ma'am?
- 12:48Speaker 5: The dates are October the twenty second through the twenty fifth,
- 12:52Speaker 5: and the twenty fifth is going to be the field
- 12:54Speaker 5: spectator day. That's the day where we expect a lot
- 12:59Speaker 5: of spectators.
- 13:00Speaker 4: And of course we'll be talking about it between now
- 13:02Speaker 4: and then. Have you on. Would love to have mister
- 13:04Speaker 4: Alexander on the show as well, if you can make
- 13:05Speaker 4: that happen. You know, people you can swing this. I
- 13:07Speaker 4: love to have him on the show as well.
- 13:09Speaker 5: I've already talked to him and he said he's willing
- 13:11Speaker 5: to come on your show whenever you'd like.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Great sounds good. Hey, real quick before we let you go,
- 13:16Speaker 4: I do want to talk about some of the development
- 13:18Speaker 4: in Hurricane. The announcement was made a couple of weeks ago,
- 13:21Speaker 4: but this major housing development going on right there in
- 13:24Speaker 4: the heart of hurricane. What can you tell us about that?
- 13:26Speaker 4: I know I talked to Morgantini from the development Authority
- 13:30Speaker 4: and they're planning an event. I'll have her on to
- 13:31Speaker 4: talk about a little bit more, which, you know, because
- 13:33Speaker 4: somebody's got to build these things, somebody's got to put
- 13:35Speaker 4: them in and they're having an event for contractors and
- 13:39Speaker 4: things of that, and as we get closer, I'll talk
- 13:41Speaker 4: more about that. But what can you can you give
- 13:42Speaker 4: us a quick one minute or so update about what's
- 13:44Speaker 4: going on there.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Absolutely main street of Hurricane, there's a seventy acre pars
- 13:49Speaker 5: or property that was sold by the family that had
- 13:52Speaker 5: it for one hundred years or whatever, sold to a
- 13:56Speaker 5: gentleman and he sold it to a developer and four
- 13:59Speaker 5: hundred plus US probably four twenty four forty homes will
- 14:03Speaker 5: be built and that's gonna start very soon. Infrastructure will start, uh,
- 14:07Speaker 5: you know, roads, underground utilities, all that type of stuff
- 14:10Speaker 5: will start very very soon, and we are we are
- 14:13Speaker 5: looking forward to it. And it's gonna it's not gonna
- 14:15Speaker 5: be an overnight build four hundred houses. It'll take a
- 14:20Speaker 5: few years to build all that. But local contractors, local subs,
- 14:25Speaker 5: they're gonna do most of the work. And that's what
- 14:27Speaker 5: I like in Morgan Tenny. I'm on the Development thirty board.
- 14:31Speaker 5: She's put together a wonderful and you can talk about
- 14:34Speaker 5: that later, but a group where people can come there
- 14:37Speaker 5: signing up. We want all local subs to be able
- 14:41Speaker 5: to do all the work. That's that's the goal, and
- 14:44Speaker 5: that's wonderful. And then and then there's also another ninety
- 14:49Speaker 5: five homes being built not too far away from there
- 14:52Speaker 5: as well. That's going to happen soon. And then the
- 14:55Speaker 5: three or four a Valley Point, which Alan Dall's building,
- 14:58Speaker 5: that's almost that's over halfway completed, and there's waiting lists.
- 15:03Speaker 5: We need homes so bad, and I'll tell you real quick,
- 15:07Speaker 5: a lot of these homes, you know, there's gonna be
- 15:10Speaker 5: new young people move in here. There's gonna be people
- 15:12Speaker 5: move out of their current homes and move over there.
- 15:14Speaker 5: But there's also gonna be a lot of older folks
- 15:18Speaker 5: that maybe live in a two story home. I've talked
- 15:20Speaker 5: to so many of those that want out of those
- 15:22Speaker 5: homes and go into like a patio bedroom home and
- 15:27Speaker 5: it will free up there five thousand square at home
- 15:29Speaker 5: for other younger families. So it's all going to work
- 15:33Speaker 5: out wonderful. And with the closing interchange opening up soon
- 15:38Speaker 5: that that's going to alleviate a lot of the traffic
- 15:41Speaker 5: that these new homes will bring. So it should work
- 15:43Speaker 5: hand in hand. There's still a lot of work to do.
- 15:45Speaker 5: We work with the doh and all those folks, but
- 15:48Speaker 5: we just need to bring it all together. And it's
- 15:50Speaker 5: happening now, and I'll look so forward to the growth
- 15:52Speaker 5: that's happening. There's so much more and that we can
- 15:54Speaker 5: do that another day.
- 15:55Speaker 4: All right, Mayor, I appreciate it as always the talk soon,
- 15:57Speaker 4: thanks a lot, Thank you, my friend well Mayor Scott
- 16:00Speaker 4: Edwards of a hurricane nine twenty three. We'll take a break.

- 19:00Speaker 10: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Dave.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Thanks for being a first You know, we'll start off
- 19:04Speaker 4: with what some serious stuff here, just like I did
- 19:06Speaker 4: with Mayor Edwards, the senseless death yesterday of a very
- 19:09Speaker 4: important young man that regardless of his politics, no one
- 19:11Speaker 4: can deny the impact that Charlie Kirk had a lot
- 19:14Speaker 4: of had a lot of young people in America.
- 19:17Speaker 10: Yeah, let me echo the comments of earlier from the
- 19:19Speaker 10: mayor that first off, this is an absolute tragedy. This
- 19:23Speaker 10: is a man, Charlie Kirk, who is a husband, a father,
- 19:28Speaker 10: and a Christian and a member of his community, who
- 19:33Speaker 10: all he wanted to do was start discussion, have people
- 19:39Speaker 10: talk about the issues that's going on in America, in
- 19:42Speaker 10: our country, in our states, in our communities, and just
- 19:47Speaker 10: understand that by conversation we can move forward together. This
- 19:52Speaker 10: isn't a man that was elected. This isn't a man
- 19:55Speaker 10: who cast a vote or oversaw government. This is an
- 20:00Speaker 10: individual who only wanted to express his freedom of speech
- 20:05Speaker 10: and share his ideas and opinions and listen to other people.
- 20:11Speaker 10: And this man was assassinated because of his voice, because
- 20:15Speaker 10: of his message, and that right there is an absolute tragedy.
- 20:20Speaker 10: In America politics.
- 20:22Speaker 4: I one hundred percent agree. And as we speak the
- 20:26Speaker 4: we understand that a weapon has now been recovered. That's
- 20:28Speaker 4: according they just had a briefing for the FBI, and
- 20:30Speaker 4: you saw that a weapon has been recovered, but that's
- 20:32Speaker 4: the shooter remains large, and you know, it's we don't
- 20:36Speaker 4: know anything about the shooter. And I'm gonna get I'm
- 20:38Speaker 4: gonna do a little commentary myself and I had a
- 20:40Speaker 4: little bit later on how you know in our society,
- 20:42Speaker 4: we're so polarized. Everybody jumps to conclusions. We don't know
- 20:45Speaker 4: anything about this guy. We don't know the somebody on
- 20:48Speaker 4: the left did it. We don't know that somebody on
- 20:49Speaker 4: the right did it. We just simply we just simply
- 20:52Speaker 4: don't know. I will say this though, I am happy
- 20:54Speaker 4: with anyone, regardless of their political party, that can get people,
- 20:58Speaker 4: get young people involved in uh and want to engage.
- 21:03Speaker 4: All Right, A quick word from you about about Patriot
- 21:05Speaker 4: Days is now known nine to eleven.
- 21:07Speaker 10: Yeah, uh, you know, we always say uh, never forget. Well,
- 21:10Speaker 10: I think we also need to add in there and
- 21:12Speaker 10: always educate, you know, Dave, before we started the show,
- 21:15Speaker 10: you and I were talking there are college students who
- 21:18Speaker 10: weren't even born. Yeah, when nine to eleven that tragedy.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I've never lived in a in a pre nine to
- 21:24Speaker 4: eleven war with T. S A and with all these
- 21:26Speaker 4: other all these changes that that that have been made
- 21:29Speaker 4: be calls with nine to eleven.
- 21:30Speaker 10: You know, uh, And I think that this is something
- 21:33Speaker 10: that we need to uh make sure that we don't
- 21:35Speaker 10: let fall by the wayside, and we continue to educate
- 21:38Speaker 10: and have these conversations uh with our growing children as
- 21:42Speaker 10: they uh mature and and and understand the tragedy of
- 21:46Speaker 10: that day. You know, when you look at nine to eleven,
- 21:49Speaker 10: for me, it's almost like for those kids what they
- 21:52Speaker 10: would see is D Day. And those are in our
- 21:55Speaker 10: history books. Those are conversations that we have about those
- 21:59Speaker 10: tragedies of war. And we need to make sure that
- 22:02Speaker 10: we're continuing to do that with our children and that
- 22:04Speaker 10: we never forget. And when I say we, I mean
- 22:07Speaker 10: generations upon generations of that tragedy of those individuals who
- 22:12Speaker 10: lost their life due to terrorist attack. And so you know,
- 22:16Speaker 10: in the words of Charlie Kirk, let's continue to educate,
- 22:19Speaker 10: Let's continue to talk and have these discussions. Let's not
- 22:24Speaker 10: let violence fear us from talking, because our democracy falls
- 22:29Speaker 10: apart when we stop talking with each other. Whether you're
- 22:33Speaker 10: a Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, whatever it is, we as neighbors,
- 22:39Speaker 10: as humans need to continue to have the conversations, and
- 22:43Speaker 10: we need to do it in a respectful manner for
- 22:46Speaker 10: both parties agree.
- 22:47Speaker 4: We're talking to Canaan Campy Commissr Lance Wheeler, but Dave

- 23:09Speaker 4: Let's move on here. You know, we've seems like here
- 23:13Speaker 4: lately Lands Over the last couple of months, we keep
- 23:16Speaker 4: getting negative news about the economy in West Virginia. But
- 23:20Speaker 4: you got some good news about the economy in here
- 23:25Speaker 4: in Kanawha County, and it has to do with business growth.
- 23:30Speaker 4: And you shared me yesterday some statistics from the Secretary
- 23:33Speaker 4: of State's Office.
- 23:34Speaker 10: Yeah, so, the Secretary of State's Office, Chris Warner, has
- 23:38Speaker 10: just released a new results for the month of August
- 23:42Speaker 10: showing that Kanall County was the largest leading county in
- 23:47Speaker 10: the state in new business registration. That was one hundred
- 23:50Speaker 10: and thirty six new businesses were filed through the Secretary
- 23:54Speaker 10: of State's Office out of Kanall County. And that's not
- 23:57Speaker 10: just Charleston, that's throughout the entire Kennall County. You know,
- 24:00Speaker 10: that's important we have these numbers because it shows the
- 24:04Speaker 10: growth of Kannall County. You know, this is actually larger
- 24:08Speaker 10: numbers than we're even seeing in the Eastern Panhandle.
- 24:11Speaker 6: I think that's a lot.
- 24:12Speaker 10: To do with the work of our Knall County Commission
- 24:15Speaker 10: with Commissioned President Ben Slango, Commissioner Tenant, and myself, along
- 24:19Speaker 10: with our partners with the City Charleston, Amy Goodwin Mayor,
- 24:23Speaker 10: our Charleston Area Alliance, our Airport, even Hatfill McCoy. You know,
- 24:28Speaker 10: let's look at some of the programs we've been doing
- 24:30Speaker 10: within the last two years. You talk about the dirt
- 24:33Speaker 10: bike trails with McCoy in Tornado, where we have people
- 24:36Speaker 10: driving in from Canada just to participate here in Kennall
- 24:40Speaker 10: County in these trails, bringing their hard earned money to
- 24:43Speaker 10: our mom and pop shops and to our businesses. We
- 24:46Speaker 10: have the big announcement of the Appalachian Outlaw Trails in
- 24:49Speaker 10: Eastern Kennall County, Breeze, the Breeze announcement of bringing in
- 24:53Speaker 10: new direct flights from Las Vegas, New York, Denver Texas.
- 24:59Speaker 10: These are in credible programs that we are implementing here
- 25:03Speaker 10: in the county, and I think that is showing interest
- 25:06Speaker 10: in the business community, whether that's a big manufacturing company
- 25:09Speaker 10: that will have conversations with of why they would want
- 25:11Speaker 10: to move to Kennall County, but also our mom and
- 25:14Speaker 10: pop shops. You know, these one hundred and thirty six registrations, Dave,
- 25:18Speaker 10: These are dreams, somebody's dream of opening up a new restaurant,
- 25:22Speaker 10: opening up a boutique shop, maybe a salon, a barbershop,
- 25:25Speaker 10: whatever it might be. These are people's dreams that they're
- 25:28Speaker 10: able to invest here in this county. We're continuing to
- 25:32Speaker 10: grow and I think a lot of part of that
- 25:34Speaker 10: is our outdoor recreation. I mean the Shawnee Sports complex
- 25:37Speaker 10: is bringing thousands upon thousands of people from this state
- 25:40Speaker 10: and out of state, even sometimes out of country every
- 25:44Speaker 10: single weekend, and that is spurring up business, economic development
- 25:49Speaker 10: and interest in people saying, you know what, I've always
- 25:51Speaker 10: thought about owning a little shop for sports equipment. Maybe
- 25:56Speaker 10: I can do that now. These are the type of
- 25:59Speaker 10: things that we need to continue to do. Low hanging fruit.
- 26:01Speaker 5: Now.
- 26:02Speaker 10: Don't get me wrong. We have a long way to
- 26:04Speaker 10: go here in Connell County, but I think we're moving
- 26:06Speaker 10: the needle in the right direction. We're heading on the
- 26:09Speaker 10: right path. It's just that we have to keep moving
- 26:11Speaker 10: forward and progressing, and I think we're going to do
- 26:13Speaker 10: that with these big announcements coming.
- 26:16Speaker 4: I want to and this is about the outdoors, but
- 26:18Speaker 4: it's not necessarily about the adults. It's about the kids.
- 26:21Speaker 4: And I know you've been a big part of this
- 26:24Speaker 4: with the continuing upgrades of playgrounds and things of that nature.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Now and the big picture of things, when you're talking
- 26:30Speaker 4: about jobs and economic development, that may not seem like
- 26:32Speaker 4: a lot, doesn't seem like they go together, but it
- 26:35Speaker 4: actually does. It actually does because you've got to have
- 26:38Speaker 4: things for the kids, because mommy and daddy are going
- 26:40Speaker 4: to work till eight to five or whatever. You've got
- 26:42Speaker 4: to have something, you know, to entertainment. As I said
- 26:44Speaker 4: on the Midday Show the other day, people don't work
- 26:47Speaker 4: all the time. Some of us feel like we work
- 26:48Speaker 4: all the time, but we don't necessarily work all the time.
- 26:51Speaker 4: You got to have a life outside of work. And
- 26:53Speaker 4: that's where the upgrades. A lot of these playgrounds, shiny
- 26:56Speaker 4: sports complex and that's where a lot of this goes
- 26:58Speaker 4: hand in hand.
- 26:59Speaker 10: You know, every time we talked to a large company
- 27:02Speaker 10: their administration, one of the things they continue to say
- 27:05Speaker 10: is what is the quality of life in your area?
- 27:08Speaker 10: And the reason that's important to them is because they
- 27:10Speaker 10: know if they're going to have workers in that area,
- 27:13Speaker 10: if people are going to move out of state into
- 27:15Speaker 10: our county to fulfill that workforce, then they're going to
- 27:19Speaker 10: need to be able to sell it to them. This
- 27:21Speaker 10: is where you're going to uproot from where you're currently
- 27:25Speaker 10: at and bring your family. You know, when an individual
- 27:28Speaker 10: has that decision that they want to take another job
- 27:30Speaker 10: out of state, it's not just their decision. It's their spouse,
- 27:34Speaker 10: it's their children, it's their family. They got to have
- 27:36Speaker 10: all these conversations and so we need to make sure
- 27:39Speaker 10: that we have that quality of life, not just for
- 27:41Speaker 10: business economic development, but for the residents that are currently here.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Now.
- 27:45Speaker 10: You know, when I was a kid growing up out
- 27:47Speaker 10: of Saint Albans, I didn't have a nice playground to
- 27:49Speaker 10: go to. I didn't have a place that I felt
- 27:51Speaker 10: like I could call home. And this is one of
- 27:53Speaker 10: the things that drive me for this, And so we're
- 27:55Speaker 10: excited that we've been putting on this new incentive of
- 27:58Speaker 10: outdoor recreation for the children, for the families here in
- 28:02Speaker 10: Connall County. We just recently over the summer finished the
- 28:06Speaker 10: brand new playgrounds date of the art over at meadow Wood,
- 28:09Speaker 10: and we're proud to announce that we've done the same
- 28:11Speaker 10: thing at Coonskin. You know, if you haven't been there yet,
- 28:15Speaker 10: you should go. We are not finished yet. We're putting
- 28:18Speaker 10: all the small little details. We're going to be having
- 28:21Speaker 10: the ribbon cutting on Thursday next week the eighteenth, at
- 28:25Speaker 10: five o'clock. We invite everyone to come, but we already
- 28:28Speaker 10: have people coming right now because the playground's finished. We're
- 28:31Speaker 10: just putting up the finished touches with more benches or
- 28:34Speaker 10: trash cans, and so I recently went with my daughters
- 28:39Speaker 10: to show them the brand new playground because we went
- 28:41Speaker 10: to the old one, which was dilapidated. It was rusted,
- 28:44Speaker 10: I mean, it was a safety heizard and somebody was
- 28:47Speaker 10: going to get hurt, and so we brought them to
- 28:49Speaker 10: this new one. And when I got there, I didn't
- 28:52Speaker 10: know how many people were going to be there. Dave,
- 28:55Speaker 10: there's thirty to forty people with their children all across
- 28:58Speaker 10: this county, some from Saint Albans, some from Cisonville, right
- 29:02Speaker 10: in Coonskin, enjoying this beautiful, brand new playground. And the
- 29:07Speaker 10: eyes on these kids lighting up, the laughters filling up
- 29:11Speaker 10: throughout the space, it was heartwarming.
- 29:14Speaker 4: The putting down of the phones, the absolutely absolutely.
- 29:18Speaker 10: I didn't see one kid with an iPad. I didn't
- 29:20Speaker 10: see one kid with the phone. I saw kids running around,
- 29:23Speaker 10: playing tag, jumping up and down. And was that something
- 29:27Speaker 10: that was beautiful in my eyes to see in our
- 29:29Speaker 10: community as somebody who grew up here in Kannall County
- 29:32Speaker 10: never had that, and getting to see that, to be
- 29:34Speaker 10: done with the generations before me, including my children, that
- 29:39Speaker 10: was just heartwarming. So we're going to invite everyone to
- 29:41Speaker 10: come on out into our new playground next Thursday the eighteenth,
- 29:47Speaker 10: and just enjoy at five o'clock a ribbon cutting of
- 29:50Speaker 10: community coming together and just being proud of what we have.
- 29:54Speaker 10: That was really my key point. I want everyone to
- 29:57Speaker 10: be proud of what we have here in Kannall County.
- 30:00Speaker 10: He's been putting to work in in the County Commission.
- 30:02Speaker 10: I think people are going to be very excited. They
- 30:04Speaker 10: haven't seen it yet, this brand new playground. And we're
- 30:07Speaker 10: not done yet. We're going to be going to Pioneer
- 30:09Speaker 10: Park over in eastern Kennell County and we're going to
- 30:11Speaker 10: finish up the last playground, brand new, state of the
- 30:14Speaker 10: art for the end of the year, and we're excited.
- 30:17Speaker 10: Later in the fall, we'll be having a ribbon cutting
- 30:19Speaker 10: for that one as well.
- 30:20Speaker 4: All right, before we let you go, I don't want
- 30:22Speaker 4: to ask you. The announcement was made last week about
- 30:24Speaker 4: the Ascend program. This of course the brainchild of Brad
- 30:29Speaker 4: an Elise Smith of Marshall University and a big ribbon
- 30:32Speaker 4: cutting or not ribbon cutting'm so you got me think
- 30:34Speaker 4: about ribbon cuttings now a big The announcement of that
- 30:37Speaker 4: was made with the County Commission and with Charleston Mary
- 30:39Speaker 4: Alliance when mayor a Goodwin's office, and several others as well.
- 30:43Speaker 10: Your take on that, You know, we talk about the
- 30:46Speaker 10: ASCEND program, and what I see out of the ASSND program,
- 30:49Speaker 10: which if your viewers don't know, is a program that
- 30:52Speaker 10: will incentivize you to choose to move to West Virginia
- 30:56Speaker 10: if you have a remote working job. And what we
- 30:59Speaker 10: have looked at is how can we get native West
- 31:01Speaker 10: Virginians who unfortunately had to make that choice to move
- 31:05Speaker 10: out of state, to come home. And I think that
- 31:07Speaker 10: those are the conversations that we're having is targeting those
- 31:10Speaker 10: who are West Virginians at heart, who their families are here,
- 31:14Speaker 10: their love is for the mountains and they want to
- 31:17Speaker 10: come home, but financially or family wise, they haven't been
- 31:20Speaker 10: able to make that decision. Giving them that incentive through
- 31:23Speaker 10: the ASSIN program to come here, come home, be with
- 31:26Speaker 10: your family, and for always and forever be a mountaineer.
- 31:31Speaker 10: That's what's important to me with this program, and this
- 31:34Speaker 10: is why everything we're talking about with outdoor recreation playgrounds
- 31:39Speaker 10: quality of life is important because when you have that
- 31:41Speaker 10: conversation with someone and say hey, come home, things have
- 31:44Speaker 10: changed and once they get to see that, and then
- 31:47Speaker 10: they're incentivid to do so that's when you're going to
- 31:50Speaker 10: start seeing West Virginians come home and Dave, that was
- 31:53Speaker 10: the ultimate plan all along for all of us.
- 31:55Speaker 4: All right, I want to switch gears real quick. I
- 31:57Speaker 4: only to get about a minute or so left in
- 31:59Speaker 4: the segment, but before so, I'm going to have you
- 32:00Speaker 4: take off your county commissioner hat for a moment. Last
- 32:03Speaker 4: time you were here, you made an announcement that you
- 32:06Speaker 4: were going to be seeking the office of state Senate.
- 32:08Speaker 4: You want to talk about how that's going so far.
- 32:09Speaker 4: I know it's early, you'll talk about that a little bit.
- 32:11Speaker 4: You know, it's going really well.
- 32:12Speaker 10: We're working right now, just getting the initial support and
- 32:15Speaker 10: been talking to voters, not just in Kannall County, and
- 32:17Speaker 10: been going to Ronan County, Jackson County, Putnam County. And
- 32:21Speaker 10: you know what I really have noticed is that my
- 32:23Speaker 10: leadership and skills of getting things done, whether that's outdoor
- 32:27Speaker 10: recreation like new playgrounds, looking at our essential services like
- 32:30Speaker 10: our ambulance authority, our police officers or firefighters, making sure
- 32:34Speaker 10: the funding's there, that leadership has shown and people know
- 32:38Speaker 10: that I mean business when it comes to protecting our
- 32:41Speaker 10: first responders and listening to the voters and the people
- 32:46Speaker 10: in local government because that's where the most can be done.
- 32:49Speaker 10: That's going to be my campaign. I'm going to be
- 32:51Speaker 10: working with local leaders and asking how can the state

- 39:19Speaker 4: Going back to Charlie Kirk. As we began the show,
- 39:22Speaker 4: the FBI was was doing a briefing. They do say
- 39:26Speaker 4: that a weapon has been recovered and also there are speculation.
- 39:31Speaker 4: See originally they thought they had taken the shooter into custoding.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Turns out that was not the case. The shooter is
- 39:36Speaker 4: still at large, but they are now The FBI in
- 39:39Speaker 4: Utah is now releasing information saying that they believe the
- 39:42Speaker 4: shooter is a college age person. It doesn't necessarily mean
- 39:46Speaker 4: they were a student at that particular college, a college
- 39:50Speaker 4: age person, meaning you know, eighteen twenty three, twenty four.
- 39:54Speaker 4: That's all they are saying at this time, which is,
- 39:57Speaker 4: you know, completely understandable. I got a couple of texts
- 40:00Speaker 4: I want to knock out here, and I will say, well,
- 40:05Speaker 4: I'm gonna I tell you what. I'm gonna read the
- 40:06Speaker 4: text and I'm gonna give you some of my own thoughts.
- 40:09Speaker 5: How's that?
- 40:10Speaker 4: Texas, No one knows the motivation of the gunman. All
- 40:13Speaker 4: the speculation is to drum up political support and anger.
- 40:16Speaker 4: For all we know the shooter was a disgruntled Charlie
- 40:19Speaker 4: Kirk fan or a disgruntled Trump lover who let TDS
- 40:22Speaker 4: get the best of them. You're seeing who was sowing
- 40:25Speaker 4: the political anger division with speculation. Remember when the Minnesota
- 40:29Speaker 4: lawmaker and her family were assassinated by a right wing extremist.
- 40:33Speaker 4: I remember silence from the Republicans and from Trump. Texas
- 40:39Speaker 4: conservatives are shaken to the bone because he was one
- 40:42Speaker 4: of theirs. The Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota not shaken. Going
- 40:48Speaker 4: back to the playground situation, we talked to Commissioner Lance

- 40:55Speaker 4: go to Campbell's Creek Park and see what the commission
- 40:58Speaker 4: has done for our park. It's amazing. They thanks for
- 41:00Speaker 4: all your help. So I hope the commissioner Wheeler is
- 41:03Speaker 4: listening and he got to hear that, texts says Dave.
- 41:08Speaker 4: All we've heard from Democrats for years is the we
- 41:11Speaker 4: need to have the conversation about this or that. That
- 41:15Speaker 4: is all Charlie did when he visited college campuses, talked
- 41:18Speaker 4: with and debated both students and professors, and the egos

- 41:35Speaker 4: top of his head, and he did so with class, kindness,
- 41:37Speaker 4: and respect. Rest with God, Charlie, Well done, thou good
- 41:41Speaker 4: and faithful servant. Matthew twenty five twenty According to a Texter,
- 41:50Speaker 4: as I said, I got a bunch of texts to

- 50:14Speaker 4: talk about this earlier in the show. The immediate rush
- 50:16Speaker 4: to judgment and to social media media about what caused this.
- 50:20Speaker 4: You know how many it was your feed last night
- 50:22Speaker 4: like mine. The left will stop at nothing. And the
- 50:26Speaker 4: truth is, as of right now, we don't know anything
- 50:29Speaker 4: about the shooter other than what I just told you.
- 50:32Speaker 4: We don't know as political his or her political registration
- 50:35Speaker 4: or affiliation, and quite frankly, in my eyes, none of
- 50:38Speaker 4: it matters. I have no answers none. But when a
- 50:43Speaker 4: similar situation happened at the Catholic school referenced earlier in
- 50:46Speaker 4: Minnesota a couple of weeks ago, it was the same thing.
- 50:51Speaker 4: It was the same rush to judgment by everybody and
- 50:53Speaker 4: that person, if you recall, to check all the boxes
- 50:57Speaker 4: of everything. And last night, at least at one point
- 51:00Speaker 4: I had to turn off social media and look for
- 51:03Speaker 4: you know, cat videos or Andy Griffith rerun or something.
- 51:05Speaker 4: I took a walk and I posted a picture of
- 51:08Speaker 4: a pretty Taze Valley sunset last night. We've got to
- 51:12Speaker 4: just stop with all of this. And I think sometimes
- 51:15Speaker 4: as a society, I think we're doomed. We're so tribal,
- 51:20Speaker 4: we're so dug in, and we're all going we not
- 51:25Speaker 4: so much me, but others are. We got to find
- 51:27Speaker 4: out who this is so we can use it for
- 51:29Speaker 4: ammunition for the other side. That's what a lot of
- 51:33Speaker 4: this goes back to. And a lot of what you
- 51:35Speaker 4: saw on social media last night's people that couldn't give
- 51:37Speaker 4: a damn one way or the other. All they really
- 51:39Speaker 4: care about is aha, can I use this at the
- 51:44Speaker 4: other side. And it's a sad, sad state of affairs.
- 51:48Speaker 4: And I've said it before and the texture was absolutely right.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Of September eleventh happened today, there would be no September
- 51:55Speaker 4: twelfth like we saw it, no unity, none whatsoever. TJ
- 52:01Speaker 4: is here ran over you good.
- 52:03Speaker 18: I'm good, buddy, I'm good. It's a sad day in
- 52:06Speaker 18: America for a number of reasons. Yeah, yeah, we remember
- 52:11Speaker 18: nine to eleven. Of course what happened yesterday, that Colorado
- 52:14Speaker 18: school shooting.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Which kind of got buried. Don't mean for like you
- 52:17Speaker 4: know in all this. So you agree with me what
- 52:20Speaker 4: I said there ten You don't have to. We can
- 52:22Speaker 4: debate if you want, but we only got twenty seconds
- 52:23Speaker 4: to do it.
- 52:26Speaker 18: I can't do it in twenty seconds. Here's all I
- 52:28Speaker 18: would say, Right, do me a favor. Yeah, tell someone
- 52:31Speaker 18: you disagree with today, Tell them you appreciate them.
- 52:34Speaker 4: Tell you value them. Try to keep a dialogue going
- 52:37Speaker 4: good enough, Just try that, you guys will keep the
- 52:39Speaker 4: dialogue going on talk line. I'll be back later today
- 52:41Speaker 4: with Metro News, midday with thirteen News and Tonight Live
