- 0:00Oh, welcome back to A Hamster with a Blumping Knife, the
- 0:03Doctor Who Commentary podcast. Hello.
- 0:07Hello. How are you I'm.
- 0:09Very good. Thank you.
- 0:10Very sunny day today. It is, yes.
- 0:12A beautiful day to be watching Doctor Who.
- 0:15Absolutely. Although we're not watching
- 0:18official Doctor Who today, are we?
- 0:20Now, will you please tell me what change?
- 0:23What on earth is going on today? Well, this is a first, isn't?
- 0:26It they'll see the wrath of you core commentary in their feeds
- 0:30and go, well what the fuck is that?
- 0:32So we're taking a bit of a step into fan films now.
- 0:37I have never been interested in fan films whatsoever in my
- 0:43entire time as a Doctor Who fan and I'm.
- 0:47Trying to think of the exposure I've had to fanfare well like.
- 0:49I suppose they were quite big, you know, wilderness year style.
- 0:54But no, it's just because there's been so many, because
- 0:57we've got Big Finish. We've had books, magazines, all
- 0:59that other extra stuff. I've.
- 1:01Never fan. Films, No.
- 1:02I've never felt the need for a fan film or to look into fan
- 1:08films because there's just so much actual Doctor Who out
- 1:11there. Even with your BBVS and your
- 1:13real times and everything, there's so much content.
- 1:16Well, I mean. I've never really looked into
- 1:18it, but just the other day we just were looking on YouTube,
- 1:20weren't we? And just happened to come across
- 1:22a few fan films and I was just so surprised how enjoyable and
- 1:26wonderful they were. So I'm completely converted to
- 1:30fan films now. Somewhat more enjoyable than
- 1:32some of the Doctor episodes we've watched over.
- 1:34The years and obviously the quality varies.
- 1:36It's all, you know, homemade stuff on a budget.
- 1:39But it's just so much fun and it's so creative and inventive
- 1:42and I just don't know why I've never looked into them before.
- 1:44Is it like, you know, not the layers of magma and all that
- 1:47under the earth? Right.
- 1:49Is there are there layers of fan films?
- 1:52So obviously you have the TV series and then you sort of have
- 1:56fanservice like Big Finish and the official books.
- 2:00I know that's actual Doctor Who, but it is kind of fans, isn't
- 2:03it? Then you would you have BBV
- 2:06underneath that, which is sort of unofficial Doctor Who but
- 2:09official merchandise. Yeah, but there's, there's
- 2:12licensing involved there. There's, you know, it's a
- 2:14product for sale. This is straight onto YouTube
- 2:17for the fun of it, for the fun of doing the cosplay and if
- 2:21you're interested in like TV and film and stuff.
- 2:24I mean, I did, you know, fun. So I didn't do Doctor Who stuff,
- 2:27but I made my own little films done with the camera and stuff.
- 2:30I've done that kind of stuff. I've recreate the episode of Man
- 2:32about the house instead of doing a doctor.
- 2:34I know, but you know, Mark was the man about the house in the
- 2:38bathtub falling asleep. I mean, I can completely see why
- 2:41it's a fun thing to do and it's you know, if you're a group of
- 2:44fans and you want to get together and do this, but the
- 2:47but the ones that we're talking about today, I think just seem
- 2:50really special and they seem like they were quite popular at
- 2:53the time. Don't know.
- 2:55We don't really know much about it.
- 2:56We're listener. We know as much as you do about
- 2:59this right now, the. Production limitations, I think.
- 3:04I think they're remarkably competent bits of storytelling.
- 3:08Well, let's go into it and tell everyone where to find are you?
- 3:10Worried that we're going out things to.
- 3:12Say so it's only half an hour everyone.
- 3:13So if you go and search for Doctor Who, the wrath of.
- 3:18Eukor. Eukor EUKOR and this is a fan
- 3:23film by Seattle International Film. 1980. 4 from 1984 and the
- 3:28first female doctor, may I say. Yes, Barbara Benedetti.
- 3:32I mean I. Think maybe he's wonderful.
- 3:35And also I think in America, you know, with Gallifrey one and the
- 3:39cosplay and everything is always so much sort of more over the
- 3:42top. And I feel like American fans,
- 3:45from what I know, are way more into that kind of stuff.
- 3:48So I feel like the American fan film all Americans also, this is
- 3:51all American. And I think yeah, they all are.
- 3:54It's yeah. It's a good English accent.
- 3:56National, but yeah, it's I feel like they go hard on the fan
- 4:00films and this is 1984, so Doctor Who is still on and I
- 4:05don't it was just such. As what was it in 84?
- 4:07That was Colin Baker's first year.
- 4:10This is up against season 22. Frankly, The Wrath of You core
- 4:14has better production values and time lash so.
- 4:16Everyone go on YouTube find it the picture quality for this
- 4:18first one. Yeah, because this doctor, this
- 4:21better. Overtime.
- 4:22My new favorite doctor, Barbara Benedetti.
- 4:24Absolutely. I'm serious.
- 4:26As a Jodie Whittaker. First female doctor.
- 4:27Amazing. They did.
- 4:29They did four with this doctor and this is the first one, 1984.
- 4:33It's all done on like home, like film.
- 4:35This one, it's actual film. You know, like a cine home film
- 4:38thing. They basically, they basically
- 4:40went to a wood and what a sort of not, it wasn't quite a power
- 4:44station. It was posing as a power
- 4:46station. They're trying to do big
- 4:47production value on location. Well, and what they I mean, the
- 4:51quality that's been uploaded on YouTube isn't particularly great
- 4:54for this particular first one. So if you're gonna give this a
- 4:57try, don't let that put you off. Wait.
- 4:59Only because what? Who cares about the quality of
- 5:02the? I'm just saying the quality of.
- 5:03Barbara Benedetti. And what's his name?
- 5:06What's the companion called? The cranium is Carl.
- 5:08Carl Oh my God. So basically, well, no, wait,
- 5:12let me just do let me just do this a little bit.
- 5:14Oh, you also you need to go to old media guy.
- 5:17That's the name of the channel where all these fan films are
- 5:20we. We also found a fabulous one
- 5:22starring fake John Pertwee and is the System.
- 5:25I mean, there's many, there's many.
- 5:26On there's name Doctor Kent, the generously portioned Dr. Kent
- 5:32where we're talking about the the Barbara Benedetti ones today
- 5:35and also if you go to Facebook and search for Doctor Who wrath
- 5:39of equal 40th anniversary. This how this is, how far back
- 5:42we're going. I think if you follow that on
- 5:45Facebook, they're going to. I think the guy who made it is
- 5:48remastering and putting up the film on HD.
- 5:51So hopefully we'll get better quality.
- 5:52Looks at that photograph of her outside the TARDIS.
- 5:56OMG. Everybody pulls this now go on
- 5:58YouTube. Haven't find this episode?
- 6:00Queue it up and we'll all watch together.
- 6:02Well, you're getting very dominated on this podcast that
- 6:04isn't yours. Everything sorted, so we're all
- 6:06ready to watch. It you start taking charge of,
- 6:08perhaps for a blood pen knife. All right, over to.
- 6:11You like every other part of my life.
- 6:14Well, let's start, shall we? And okay everybody, 321 when
- 6:19you're ready for the wrath of Equal Star.
- 6:20Sorry, I should start. Brown, hold on when?
- 6:22Did he? And go.
- 6:24I don't. Think anyone was watching
- 6:25alongside us? Well.
- 6:26I think so. Seattle International Film I.
- 6:29Think what does give it that extra quality is that it's on
- 6:34film. So we're here, London 1911 and
- 6:36our our soon to be companion Carl the chimney sweep.
- 6:40Is Chimney. Well, he's a chimney.
- 6:41He's got a chimney sweep. Thing No Chimney, Chimney,
- 6:44chimney. Whatever anyway.
- 6:46And he's done that. He looks a bit like ATV comic
- 6:49Patrick. Trout No, he doesn't.
- 6:50He looks like the Artful Dodger from.
- 6:53He's got the bow tie and he's short.
- 6:55He's like Patrick Trout and. God, the production value on
- 6:58this street. Absolutely brilliant.
- 7:00The light and. Everything.
- 7:02So he is. He's found some blood on the
- 7:04floor. What is happening?
- 7:06Something has occurred. I mean it's very streets of
- 7:08Talons Wing Chayang style. They got the fog.
- 7:12And everything. And here he's seen somebody in
- 7:14the shadows. Is she in a junkyard?
- 7:17No, it's Victorian London, isn't it?
- 7:18Of course. And here we have our doctor.
- 7:21Barbara Benedetti in the Sick Doctor's Co.
- 7:24Very oversized sick doctor's. Coat well, she's a lot smaller
- 7:28than Colin Baker and. She's got blood on her, she's
- 7:30injured and he's helping her and he's he's, they're chatting at
- 7:33all. So it's a great doctor and
- 7:36companion pairing. It's wonderful and actually as
- 7:39we go through, because they've got four whole adventures.
- 7:42On YouTube. You lucky bit, that's all.
- 7:44That's three more than That's three more than Paul Miguel, I
- 7:47might add. I.
- 7:47Love how Carl just goes along with it.
- 7:49What a great companion. And there's no fuss about her
- 7:53being a woman, is there? They just, they just ask you to
- 7:56accept. It and so she reminds me of I
- 7:58don't know if this is an app description.
- 8:00She's a bit like Lulla Ward. Crossed with Victoria Wood.
- 8:04Crossed with Jane Asher? Yeah.
- 8:07Crossed with Jane Lynch. You know that woman from Glee?
- 8:10Is it Jane Lynn? She's.
- 8:11Got Victoria Woods haircut? Victoria Wood.
- 8:13Yeah, and all those wonderful people to come.
- 8:17Amazing. I think she's American, but she
- 8:18sort of goes. Come along, Carl.
- 8:22And I mean, I don't we, we don't really know too much about it.
- 8:25Sadly, Barbara has passed away since making.
- 8:27Racist, but. I don't know if she was a fan,
- 8:31if this is all or they've or it's fans that have hired an
- 8:34actress, if you see what I mean. What she's got is genuine acting
- 8:39ability and a sparkle in her eyes, like she's got a beautiful
- 8:42smile absolutely going. And I've been straight in that
- 8:44TARDIS with her. If I was Carl the chimney sweep.
- 8:47I know and it and they've got a proper full, you know, this is a
- 8:50replica TARDIS, This is a proper solid TARDIS.
- 8:53It's not a cardboard. It's a bit cardboard that isn't
- 8:57actually. Something.
- 8:58They've got a Tardis, they've really gone to town on it, it
- 9:01looked. Quite genuine and what I love in
- 9:03all of these videos is that they use the incidental music.
- 9:06So this is the 1980s, so all of them as it.
- 9:10Goes on and on the last. One there was original.
- 9:12Music and we've got now we've got the Peter Davidson title
- 9:14sequence with. Barbara Benedicti.
- 9:17So she looks amazing. Oh my God.
- 9:21And we've got the the neon Doctor Who logo.
- 9:24And I mean, this is just one episode.
- 9:26It's a it's a full story, 30 minutes, so it doesn't know.
- 9:30How the wrath of you and is it written?
- 9:32By. Let's just see by.
- 9:33Cheryl Reid. Cheryl Reid?
- 9:36Isn't that an actor? Who am I thinking?
- 9:39Cheryl Baker for books. I think that it could be her
- 9:42with a N name. She's a secret crystal.
- 9:44HP Oh my. God look straight into the
- 9:46story. Then we go and we've got these
- 9:48actors in. So I think they're supposed to
- 9:51be, are they not the the X from the, I want to say Falklands
- 9:57Walk no Vietnam? Expats.
- 9:59Because Vietnam was around this, no And supposed to be living in
- 10:01the in the forest, sort of in the jungle.
- 10:03Song. That's right.
- 10:05I mean, they don't look, they don't look quite roughed up
- 10:07enough well to be savages living out in the jungle well.
- 10:11That is the idea and the idea. Is they're masculine, they're
- 10:14aggressive, you know? Rebellious 80s guy.
- 10:16I mean, look, it's just like, it's just like attack of the
- 10:19side. We've got knives out already it.
- 10:21Is, I mean, it's all the sort of tropes from your 80s, Eric
- 10:24Saywards. But with a fucking likable Dr.
- 10:27Imagine that gang in attacking the Cybermen, but they were like
- 10:30proper rough, hard, dangerous people.
- 10:32What's funny? And he's got a proper knife at
- 10:35him. I mean, this is proper drama I
- 10:36feel. What's funny is Barbara
- 10:38Benedetti's doctor, I'm just going to call her the Barbara
- 10:41Dr. Yeah, she comes out the TARDIS with her Colin Baker
- 10:43Broly and bops them all on the end and goes now stop being
- 10:46silly boys and pay attention. They're threatening a journalist
- 10:50here, this young guy who's obviously found out where
- 10:53they're or what's going on or something.
- 10:54He's got his camera, so they've threatened him and said to get
- 10:56out there. But unbeknownst to anybody,
- 10:59there is a sinister alien in the woods and in a minute we get
- 11:03some fabulous Predator style POV shots.
- 11:06So here we have journalists running away in the forest and
- 11:09he sees the TARDIS landing. I thought he was going to become
- 11:11another companion as well. So he's.
- 11:13Just follow them up. Journalist, teenager, guard.
- 11:16Look at this. That's not a bad, but it's
- 11:18realization effects. Full-sized, Hardest landing in
- 11:20the forest I. Mean this sort of thing we
- 11:22wanted Colin Baker to be doing, landing in Vietnam, not in.
- 11:25Vietnam, and she's in her. She's still in the Colin Baker
- 11:29costume at the moment. Oh no, she goes in in a second.
- 11:32But later on she gets changed. In the minute, I think because.
- 11:35It's implied that you know she's just regenerating.
- 11:37That coat is massive on her though, isn't it?
- 11:39I know it. Doesn't fit well.
- 11:40A bit like the best of McCoy. She's lost inside Colin's coat.
- 11:43And Carl the chimney sweep is just accepting and everything.
- 11:46He's got his top hat wearing the whole time, which I quite like.
- 11:48His bow tie, say. You went on to act.
- 11:50I'd do more acting. So yeah, so Carl.
- 11:52Carl is played by. Hold please call us.
- 11:56I called Randy Rogal, Randy Rogal and he is very much into
- 12:03sort of musical theatre in the Oh my God business.
- 12:07That comes in important in the second episode.
- 12:09But I mean, from what I can see, he's famous for writing for
- 12:13Animaniacs and sort of comedy stuff from Tiny Toon Adventures
- 12:17was the Animaniac. He's done the book for that.
- 12:20And I think he does sort of Broadway he's sort of involved
- 12:22in in that style. But I think, you know, just
- 12:24like, yeah, British fans of the, you know, your Nick Briggs and,
- 12:28yeah, Steven Moffatz and that who's sort of involved in that,
- 12:31I feel like this is the American equivalent.
- 12:32And they've gone on to do, you know, bigger things since.
- 12:36What what, what is great about them as well, though not only do
- 12:39they have actually genuinely good chemistry, but the visual
- 12:42of of when she comes out wearing a Napoleon costume and him as
- 12:46the chimney sweep. Like I always say, the doctrine
- 12:49of Panthers should have a distinctive outline, and they
- 12:51really do. They're.
- 12:52Brilliantly getting very much with the 80s they've got across
- 12:55you and they're not changing from episode to episode.
- 12:58And so the the doctor very shortly we'll see does change
- 13:03her outfit. It's wonderful.
- 13:04So it's like all beige with your.
- 13:08What do you call? Napoleonic.
- 13:10It's it's Napoleonic. Imagine Napoleon's outfit but
- 13:13all beige and. Stylish, old, tailored.
- 13:16And she's got an umbrella and it's very stylised.
- 13:19It looks like a piece of fan art come to life.
- 13:21When when she comes back in the in the second, third and 4th
- 13:24ones. She's a bit.
- 13:26More She switches it up to sort of Romana, Reds Romana, but it's
- 13:28the same costume. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:31So they're, they're talking to the journalist now and obviously
- 13:33we're getting all the explanation of the TARDIS and
- 13:36the Doctor and. Carl's just going, oh, oh, well,
- 13:38I guess that does make sense, doesn't it?
- 13:40Yeah. And there is a mention about how
- 13:42we used to be a man or something like that.
- 13:43But it's, yeah, it's glossed over very quickly.
- 13:45I could see why you would think this journalist might actually
- 13:47be another companion, I thought, because he doesn't.
- 13:49But he's the first to die, isn't he?
- 13:51Yes, so they're sort of discovering where they are and
- 13:53but the script, I mean it doesn't, I mean we, we've
- 13:56watched a couple of other fan films on here and I think
- 13:59they're all very keen to get to a cool bit or to show a Cyberman
- 14:03or to do something. A Doctor Who monster or a Doctor
- 14:06Who villain? Although we do get there.
- 14:08In this series here is it just takes his time, like a proper
- 14:13script. You're exploring, you're giving
- 14:15these characters time, you're cutting away to other
- 14:17characters, setting the scene. May I say something?
- 14:19It feels like big. Finish.
- 14:21Can you watch the Mark of Yukon please?
- 14:23This is how it's done in. My God outfit.
- 14:27She's got a blue sort of Necker chief as well.
- 14:29Corvac. Yeah.
- 14:31Oh, she looks wonderful. But so she's sort of got a bit
- 14:35of a clipped upper class accent, hasn't she?
- 14:37And she's. Playing it very much like that,
- 14:38yes. Yes.
- 14:39She's like, oh, come on, Carl. Come on, Carl.
- 14:42Honestly, stop dawdling about the target.
- 14:44Let's go. And he's just happy to to go.
- 14:46In a minute, in a minute, all these Vietnam fugs stop like
- 14:50brandishing knives at her and she just literally just brushes
- 14:54them aside like they don't matter.
- 14:55This Carl, is how Attic should have been your aunt.
- 14:59Gotcha. Perfect.
- 15:00This is genuine, actual Adric from Victorian times, artful
- 15:04dodgery style. And he's and he's scared and
- 15:07then she's like, oh Carl, you need to go and distract.
- 15:10You know, later on she's like, you need to go and distract
- 15:11these people. And he's like, he's scared, but
- 15:13he goes and does it and he just, whatever she says.
- 15:15He will do that for the the good of, you know, everything.
- 15:18And he just gets on with it and he's up into the adventure.
- 15:20What's great though about the two of them is in the second
- 15:23one, you get a feeling they've sort of been together a little
- 15:26while. He's sort of eating snacks and
- 15:27size. In the third one, they just turn
- 15:29up halfway through the story and they're just an absolute pair by
- 15:33that point, you can tell. And then in the last one, which
- 15:35I won't give any spoilers about, but it was amazing, You feel
- 15:39like they've been together forever.
- 15:41And think about the Doctor here. She does quite, She's got comedy
- 15:44lines and she does it really well.
- 15:46So she's just picked up the medallion and she's like, do you
- 15:49know what this is? And he's like, no, what?
- 15:50And she's like, neither do I, you know, it's all that kind of
- 15:54quippy stuff, but it's just, it's crazy.
- 15:57And she can. She can.
- 15:59Do. That so journalist has just been
- 16:00killed, unfortunately. And he's died to the attack of
- 16:03the Sidemen music. Yeah, that this is the only
- 16:06thing if this had its own score. The last one does.
- 16:09But as I think this is the one where you really notice.
- 16:12It what you're. Coming, you know.
- 16:13About this is when you go on location.
- 16:16Yeah, on in a forest with film cameras.
- 16:20Well, this just looks like Doctor Who.
- 16:22It's different. From the 80s.
- 16:24That's the thing. This is.
- 16:26In fact, Colin Baker, in some places I've heard you berating
- 16:29recently about the 80s editing. In some places, the editing of
- 16:32this fan film is actually more competent.
- 16:34I. Think it's just so well well
- 16:37executed. I think.
- 16:39Here she is. She's popping the the folks on
- 16:42her head. She's brandishing her brolly
- 16:43like a sword. She, you were just drawn to her
- 16:46in every scene. She, she is the authority
- 16:48figure. Yeah, she's writing.
- 16:49I mean, if we're comparing sort of female Doctors in terms of,
- 16:53you know, Jodie Whittaker, she. Doesn't always have.
- 16:56I'm not saying I love her. Strange takes over.
- 17:00If this was her, if this was Jodie Whittaker in this
- 17:02situation, it wouldn't play out like this.
- 17:03She wouldn't immediately walk in and have the authority of all
- 17:07these people. She'd be she'd play it goofy.
- 17:09And I don't know what's going on, but here you have Barbara
- 17:13with her umbrella. Now you listen to me, Bop.
- 17:16I am here going to put your knives away, you know.
- 17:19Why do you think they went for a woman then?
- 17:21Because they could have so easily gone for a man.
- 17:23Everyone else has gone for a man in every other fan film I've
- 17:25ever seen. Usually the person writing it
- 17:27and directing it plays the doctor in Easy.
- 17:29You read that the guy got her, she's playing the Doctor and she
- 17:32genuinely thought Doctor Who was just the made-up series.
- 17:35So I'm guessing she's not a fan. She's an actress that they've
- 17:38they've got in. And she is an actress.
- 17:41And I think so. It's not like, oh, we're a group
- 17:44of fans. Excuse me, who wants to play the
- 17:46doctor? Oh, she will.
- 17:47I think it's a genuine decision to make her a female doctor.
- 17:51This is this. Looks like really young Doctor
- 17:53Who. It's a bit like the scene in the
- 17:54Masters Man Dragger or where the man's by the water.
- 17:56You know something dreadful is going to happen in many minutes.
- 17:59Point of view shot from. Different.
- 18:00Dramatic. Is it predator?
- 18:03Is that where they did the point of view shots?
- 18:05Predator it is in. The film Predator with the
- 18:07invisible thing in there, Yeah, yeah, I think it's got that.
- 18:10It's not quite as good as that, but you know, it's pretty.
- 18:12Good. But you're looking at these
- 18:13guys. It's not like, oh, they've got
- 18:15great costumes. It's it just fits in.
- 18:17You don't think of them as costumes.
- 18:19Roving through the grass, heading towards him.
- 18:22He's dead. I mean, there are some slight,
- 18:23slight Dodger shots here just. You know, but so sorry, Mr.
- 18:27amateur Filmmaker. And you're just saying, I mean,
- 18:31why don't you? Pick up a camera and see if you
- 18:32could do better if. This guy is is putting them up
- 18:34in HD soon for the 40th anniversary.
- 18:36This is. I can't wait to watch this in
- 18:38HD. Barbara will be watching the
- 18:40film, right? We'll be buying the DVD.
- 18:42Yeah, so now people have been picked off one by one in the
- 18:46forest, of course. Do you think?
- 18:48I think making it half an hour is a really savvy move as well.
- 18:51Recently I watched Time Rift, which was the John Blum fan film
- 18:55as a precursor to Vampire science with Brigadier Kramer
- 18:58and the 7th block for an ace as not played by Sylvester McCoy
- 19:02and Sophie Aldrid. And that was an hour long and I
- 19:05felt the length, if you'll pardon the pun of that, whereas
- 19:11this is just a knife length. It sort of slips in and out
- 19:14perfectly. Unless she's slowly getting
- 19:16these, keep calling the thugs the thug guys on board.
- 19:20Look how she carries herself. She is the doctor.
- 19:23Yeah, immediately. And they're going to listen to
- 19:25her in a minute and follow her. She goes, you silly man, get out
- 19:27of my way. Yeah, dude, she's got such
- 19:32authority. Yeah, so.
- 19:34And do you like as well how, with the four stories they did
- 19:36such a range of styles? Well, exactly.
- 19:39I mean not one of. Them is the same, they go to a
- 19:41forest every time. Actually present day.
- 19:45The historical. War in 1984 in America and then
- 19:48we go historical and then we go, what do we do?
- 19:51The third one is the it's the modern day one, but in the in
- 19:53the university. And then we go sort of Syrios,
- 19:57isn't it, Sort? Of world game style, story.
- 19:59I mean, I wonder how long it took to put all this together.
- 20:01Well, that was done over five years, so they did.
- 20:03But in terms of? Half an hour.
- 20:05I mean, they did. One every year and a half or
- 20:07something like that. I took a while a long time, but
- 20:09I think it was worth. Paying, you know, I forgot to
- 20:11pay all the actors and you know, the film.
- 20:14I think the film is expensive. I don't.
- 20:16Know if I choose this bit of music now?
- 20:17So one of the Vietnam man is walking through the forest and
- 20:21it's the music of the shuttle arriving in Leisure hive.
- 20:23Yeah, it's just the music choices that are slightly off.
- 20:27Yeah, but they wanted to feel like Doctor Who, don't they?
- 20:29They wanted to feel like Doctor Who.
- 20:30What's happening is there's something in this forest.
- 20:32So they they've, these guys have been living here a long time.
- 20:35One of them's been living there longer than everybody else.
- 20:37And he gets this feeling of some kind of energy or something in
- 20:40the in the forest. And there's this obelisk thing
- 20:43that's landed, which we're just seeing now.
- 20:45A bit like the the obelisk in a. Bit more than undead, isn't it?
- 20:49But a bit. Smaller because all these.
- 20:50Things are going to be fresh in their mind when they, you know,
- 20:53this is covering Doctor Who. In a minute you know this
- 20:56brilliant electricity effect flies out of the obelisk and
- 21:00possesses him. So I.
- 21:00Think we got two obelisks, have we?
- 21:02I'm not sure. Look at this.
- 21:03This I love all of the. Presence has flown.
- 21:05Out POV shots are great. After them and it's.
- 21:08Fucking Blair Witch Project. We're going to see hands on the
- 21:14tent any minute. Oh, I just think Carl's so
- 21:18great. I just look so fun and.
- 21:20In fact. I've seen that I.
- 21:21Can't talk about the second one yet, but he's the best in the
- 21:23second one. He's so funny, but he does a lot
- 21:26of comedy. Like earlier on when he was
- 21:28being held by one of the soldiers, he was doing like a
- 21:31comedy. Oh, you're straggling me face.
- 21:33But is it weird that her, you know, they're going through the
- 21:36costume? Carl's in his top hat and bow
- 21:38tie. The Doctor's in her outfit.
- 21:41They blend in more than the Doctor and Perry have done in
- 21:44Marcus Irani. Do you know what I mean?
- 21:46Because when you're watching Marcus Irani with them two,
- 21:49you're looking, oh, they're wearing costumes.
- 21:51The whole they're here, they're here, they just sort of blend
- 21:54in. You accept it.
- 21:55And why does that not work? And this works perfectly.
- 21:59I think what you really hit something there that actually
- 22:01JNT only needed to tone it down a bit for it to work.
- 22:05Did you see that? They just come across this dead
- 22:07body and the Barbara Dr. Then she just had her hands in her
- 22:10pockets like this is the sort of thing she sees every day.
- 22:13I suppose she was called a Baker recently down around murdering
- 22:16everybody. So she did see that's.
- 22:17The thing it blends, it's a costume still in terms of the
- 22:21Doctor is wearing something a bit unusual, but it you know,
- 22:25it's not like they're not going why you a clown, why you dressed
- 22:28up like. This, she said.
- 22:29The way in a way, I feel responsible.
- 22:32I should have warned him to stay away.
- 22:33So she's moral as well. Colin Baker would have gone.
- 22:36Never mind. Let's move on another body.
- 22:41I. Wonder if these were shown at
- 22:43conventions at the time. Should have been watch these.
- 22:46Listen, we're hoping we're going to entice you people because
- 22:49they've only had they've only had 900 watches on YouTube, but.
- 22:52No, there's another note. This is posted twice.
- 22:54The other one's had 11,000. Oh great, I think.
- 22:57That Barbara Dr. has had some exposure.
- 23:00Were you a fan at the time, listeners?
- 23:02Did you? Are you aware of this, Doctor?
- 23:04I mean, I think these fan films and these fan doctors even up to
- 23:09now have their big followings, don't they?
- 23:11If you're in, if you're into that and if into that, but I
- 23:14just never. Nathan.
- 23:15I'll make Nathan. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:16He's done his own fan films and they're very well made, aren't
- 23:19they? Yeah, I think there was this
- 23:21sort of a resurgent around the new series, sort of.
- 23:24Everyone listening, can I ask you, would you like Mark and I
- 23:27to make our own Doctor Who fan film?
- 23:30We could never compete with Barbara.
- 23:32Oh. No.
- 23:35I just love the Doctor. I just want all.
- 23:37I want books, I want audios. I want more of the Doctor and
- 23:40Carl and their adventures. I really do.
- 23:43Ask you a question, is Barbara a genuine Dr. for you now for.
- 23:47Now I will listen my favorite doctor.
- 23:50Honestly, I just, I just honestly the scripts are
- 23:54brilliant. They are great, yeah.
- 23:56They just flow so easy. There's no nothing clunky about
- 23:59it. There's.
- 23:59Nothing to say the script shouldn't be brilliant because
- 24:01like a lot of big finishing. That I've written by fan.
- 24:03I'm just saying compared to some of the other fan films we've
- 24:05seen. Oh, fair, you know, Yeah.
- 24:07You know, it's not just we're in a forest because it looks cool
- 24:10or anything. She says come on guys.
- 24:11Standing in the forest, having genuine dialogue, it's building
- 24:14up an atmosphere slowly and she slowly.
- 24:17It's taken, you know, it's not just straight away, it's taken a
- 24:20few scenes for her to convince these guys to come with her and
- 24:23there's something alien happening.
- 24:24You know what? All this location work reminds
- 24:26me of in the forest. Full circle.
- 24:28Oh, Deadly Assassin episode three?
- 24:30Really. No, that sort of lush forest
- 24:33going from. Yeah.
- 24:35Are we in? Hang on, Seattle.
- 24:36Where are we? Is that America or Canada?
- 24:38Oh God. No.
- 24:39Is it supposed to be America? Is it supposed to be England?
- 24:42I suppose would be America because they're Americans, but
- 24:45the Seattle film thing, they're a little local at the front.
- 24:47It's that it's that viewing tower in Seattle.
- 24:50It's in Grey's Anatomy. We're.
- 24:53Very familiar with grey. Not Grey's Anatomy.
- 24:55It's Seattle. There's another.
- 24:56Thing we watched recently with that in and you said is it
- 24:58there? Oh, that Netflix documentary
- 25:00about the murder is. This A2 part.
- 25:02No, this is part. One, Are you sure?
- 25:03Yeah. Is it a two-part?
- 25:04No, it's just 1/2 an hour. Oh, is it really?
- 25:08Yeah, we didn't. We'd have no they.
- 25:09Haven't even got to the the power station yet and we're 25
- 25:12minutes in. It's going to be wrapped up very
- 25:16quickly like the new series. So yeah, they're they're finding
- 25:19these. Gods.
- 25:20And to be fair, that does look like a 1980s Doctor Who prop.
- 25:24It looks like the thing in the five Doctors in wrestle with the
- 25:26writing on. It's that stone thing.
- 25:29It's it's one of those just. Without the writing on it.
- 25:32Yeah, See, look, look at them there, Barbara.
- 25:35And what's his name again? Carl in silhouette?
- 25:38Absolutely. You know who they are.
- 25:40Straight framing. Of everything is done very
- 25:42professionally. Yeah, well, like, you know, you
- 25:44could put, I don't know, Ruby Sunday and Rose Tyler instead of
- 25:46where you'll be able to tell which is which, which are.
- 25:49This guy is quite good. I mean we we noticed watching
- 25:52over the four, there's a few people that double large and
- 25:55play other parts in other stories.
- 25:56One of these soldiers is so hot. Look at him, he's got big
- 26:00luscious lips. He's about to get taken over.
- 26:02Yeah, and he has an evil voice. It makes him even sexier.
- 26:07Here we go. Oh, Carl, that was a good
- 26:09transition. Carl has has gone off and he's
- 26:11found this medallion they found earlier.
- 26:13He's realized that it matches the logo that's on the obelisk.
- 26:17I mean, this is surely he should be experienced a bit of culture
- 26:20shock, Carl. He does take it in his stride.
- 26:22He's very much so. I do, that's what I like.
- 26:25He's usually shoving his bum up a chimney.
- 26:27So like he's like, this is actually preferable.
- 26:29Yeah, he's he's saying here comes that special effects now
- 26:32the green. Electricity.
- 26:33He's about to unleash the energy, no?
- 26:36Ucor. Ucor yes.
- 26:38The evil UCOR. I couldn't.
- 26:40Did you figure out what his plan was?
- 26:41He wanted to steal all the electricity.
- 26:43It's an it's an alien species that's come in this like obelisk
- 26:46thing, this pod thing, and I think they're prisoners from
- 26:50somewhere. Oh, that's right.
- 26:51Look, that medallion you mentioned earlier.
- 26:53He's accidentally unleashed it and she's gone.
- 26:55Oh no. She goes to him car.
- 26:58Why did you do that and he goes well, I figured that fitted in
- 27:02there and we've. Got some lovely We've obviously
- 27:05got a Fireworker Roman candle coming out of the obelisk as the
- 27:10explosion, which is fair enough. Oh, look at him on the grass.
- 27:13Look, the doctor. And Carl, Carl, it's, it's that
- 27:16same Carl, one day you and I need to have a long talk about
- 27:22alien artifacts. It's just like that, isn't it?
- 27:25We get there, we get there. There's a wonderful bit, I can't
- 27:29remember which episode is in, where she goes.
- 27:31Carl, what would you say to a salami sandwich?
- 27:34And he goes, I'd say hello. And she goes.
- 27:37Come along, Carl. So here we are.
- 27:41We've got our our Don't you have a star that's been taken over?
- 27:45I love her shoulder tussles, you know.
- 27:48Oh my God. Electric flying out everywhere
- 27:50it must. Have been difficult to put your
- 27:52video effects or your you know. What that electric just?
- 27:54Effects me of over the top on film once you've developed.
- 27:57It he looks so hot now. He's evil, doesn't he?
- 27:59If you like hot guys, check out The Wrath of You Call.
- 28:04He's like, you look a bit like a muscly Christian Schmidt, don't
- 28:07you think? Yeah, he is, isn't he?
- 28:09Yeah. You know the electricity effect,
- 28:11It reminds me of that dreadful electricity effect you had in
- 28:14roads. Remember when it was all coming
- 28:15out of the the London Eye, that sort of electric?
- 28:19They're both blue. Yeah, yes, here we go.
- 28:25So he's been, he got taken over and he had the evil, you know,
- 28:28hybrid token over voice and now it's it's whooshed off to the
- 28:31nearest power state. Sexy and that can you do a sexy
- 28:33evil taken over voice. I'll try I am you core.
- 28:38I will use my electricity in the power station to take over all
- 28:42of the earth. So it needs the power station.
- 28:44So now they're all going to be off to the TARDIS.
- 28:47The very 1980s. Off to the TARDIS to the next.
- 28:50The awakening, you know. Black walking and I love her
- 28:53umbrella. It's a it's a white and red
- 28:56stripe. The umbrella did.
- 28:57You see what she did there? She just stabbed it in the
- 28:58ground outside the cars and goes, come along everyone, let's
- 29:01go in. And so we've only got two thug
- 29:05guys left, so we've got the one thug guy that they've convinced
- 29:08and the other one that got taken over.
- 29:09So he's a bit weak after he's just been taken over.
- 29:12So they're all going into the TARDIS now, Karl?
- 29:14Keeps doing the awful Dodger thing of taking his hat off and
- 29:19playing with his hair just like the awful Dodger.
- 29:21Did you see that? I said when in she's like
- 29:23patting them all on the back. Come on now, in you go.
- 29:25Comedy. So she's she's shut the TARDIS
- 29:28door and then she's come out and she's whacked it with her
- 29:30umbrella and gone in and it's D material.
- 29:32Oh my God. I mean, if Colin did that, it
- 29:34would have been wonderful. Look, where are we now?
- 29:38We're in a genuine power station somewhere.
- 29:40They've had permission to fill. I don't think they've got
- 29:42permission if well. They land the whole TARDIS right
- 29:45outside. That's a house right next door
- 29:47to a power station. Oh.
- 29:49Look, yeah, you can tell this abroad.
- 29:50Look at those trees. They're gorgeous.
- 29:52And. We've got a bit of fog here, you
- 29:54know, they've really thought about it.
- 29:55You know, they've not just plucked the TARDIS down.
- 29:57They've got the atmosphere, they've got the.
- 29:58I think the tell, the tell in these fan films, between a good
- 30:02one and a bad one, is the editing.
- 30:04If it's seamlessly edited, Oh no.
- 30:07The joke here, right, is that they haven't gone straight to
- 30:09the power station. They've gone back in time and
- 30:12then she's had to do a few hops to get here to the right place,
- 30:15and there's an arrow on the side of the TARDIS.
- 30:17And she goes, well, it's not my fault I can't do the controls,
- 30:20you know? Oh, if you're if you're a
- 30:22stickler for TARDIS windows, don't watch this, because we've
- 30:24only got windows on one on the doors, we don't have any on the
- 30:27side. Here, the Barbara Dr. has her
- 30:29own target. About that, yes, she's got her
- 30:32own design target. She is unique, yeah.
- 30:35The doors don't aren't the right, the windows aren't the
- 30:37right size. I'm just saying.
- 30:39It doesn't matter. Don't be shocked when you watch
- 30:42this. Oh my God.
- 30:44Sent off Carl though to secure the power station.
- 30:47So the guys just she's giving him a knife and off he goes to
- 30:51tie everyone up and to to make sure they don't get is this the
- 30:55one sent away does. She use her feminine walls to
- 30:57distract the guard. Oh no, that was another one we
- 30:59watched, wasn't it? That was a completely
- 31:02development. Oh my God, that was the
- 31:04Australian one. We watched with the look alike
- 31:07of Sam Jones. Listen, this is the warning to
- 31:10you that once you start down these fan films you just want to
- 31:13see, you won't start. We'll we'll tell you the link to
- 31:16the John Perry one as well with the Master.
- 31:18That one's amazing. Oh no, the power station people
- 31:23have been tied up and gagged. Yukor has arrived.
- 31:27Oh my God, it's all going on now.
- 31:29And very clever that the alien is either taken over by
- 31:32somebody, played by a human, or it's just an invisible voice.
- 31:38We're not having to build alien creatures.
- 31:40In fact, all of these ones we've watched, we've not had any.
- 31:43You know, no one's gone to town and made their own dialect or
- 31:46made their own. I mean, you know, creature that
- 31:48might not come off the way that you want it to.
- 31:50We watched more in the script and the people and the
- 31:52characters. We watched a big budget movie,
- 31:54Marley and Me yesterday and and even with a huge What's Marley
- 31:59and Me? That's the Jennifer Aniston
- 32:00comic. She is a monster.
- 32:03No that. Can me the 1980s ET rip off?
- 32:07A cheap one, but they had a bit of money and even they can do
- 32:09aliens that well. Look at Barbara marching into
- 32:14the power station she is in. That bitch is in total control
- 32:18and. She's getting straight on with
- 32:21it. She's putting her device onto
- 32:22the power thing. So when the evil alien comes
- 32:26down, Oh no, we've got, we've got a slight extra bit here.
- 32:30So the guy that was taken over, he's waking up in the TARDIS.
- 32:33Now, we don't ever see a TARDIS console room in any of these we
- 32:36see. A white interior, don't we?
- 32:38Yeah. We see plain white.
- 32:39That's all they can. Afford sparsely decorated,
- 32:41exactly like you see the 1980s. Imagine the 1980s TARDIS is
- 32:46without the interiors, without the roundels.
- 32:48That's it. That's you know, you're a pop
- 32:49plan. You're old Wicker.
- 32:51It's basically the TARDIS from the Invasion of Time.
- 32:54Just white rooms. Yeah.
- 32:56And so he's been taken. Over and he was going to steal
- 32:59the TARDIS, but they they didn't.
- 33:01Imagine in this kind of Baker time if you had someone come out
- 33:03the TARDIS possessed like that. It would be the best cliffhanger
- 33:06ever. I think they know how to fill
- 33:09this not. Phase our doctor here though no
- 33:12Oh Oh well he's threatening car now he's no would.
- 33:15You be threatening. He just shot him.
- 33:17He shot him with his electric bulbs.
- 33:18He's. Going to keep.
- 33:19Killing, Oh my God. Zapping car.
- 33:21Xbox are great aren't they? They look they look like me when
- 33:24I do a scribble on the. Page so but we but the Doctor
- 33:28has already set up oh, excuse me, the power thing.
- 33:31Oh my God, she just had she had a massive crash zoom, traumatic
- 33:35zoom. Then she's off.
- 33:37She's got one to get to the power that was.
- 33:39Her. That was her doctor moment.
- 33:41No, her doctor moment was the first scene, wasn't it?
- 33:43Let's be honest. She's carrying an umbrella
- 33:45everywhere she goes, even all the action seekers.
- 33:48What was the Doctor's side? One on my side.
- 33:50Barbara Benedessi is the one. She just got it and she does the
- 33:53techno Babble stuff like very convincingly.
- 33:56Tell me she's going to climb up that pylon is.
- 33:59She we're going to get some home.
- 34:00This is really clever. I don't know if you noticed
- 34:02this. So she's she's at the bottom of
- 34:03this Gerda thing and she's whacking it with her umbrella
- 34:06and as she whacks it, the sparks fly off.
- 34:09So it's obviously set up. They've set up some charges.
- 34:11So when she whacks it, it goes off.
- 34:13Very clever, technically done, and I'm not sure when they're
- 34:16allowed to set off these she. She hits it, the spark goes off
- 34:19and then it very quickly cuts. So it's a very dramatic cut,
- 34:24really clever. And look at the authority she's
- 34:27got here. Get the fuck off.
- 34:29Planet Earth. You got scared of Earth?
- 34:32Well, no, but she's so lovely, really.
- 34:34And there we go, all done. She's Barbara Benedetti, Doctor
- 34:38said. It she just talked him away.
- 34:40What does she? Yeah, she zapped him away with
- 34:41her thing. She basically did the Babylon
- 34:43Five thing and said get the hell out of this Galaxy.
- 34:45So this also starred Jim Dean. As.
- 34:48Grant, Heavy, Macaulay. As Harris.
- 34:52Michael. Smith as Tate as Wallace.
- 34:56Oh. George County Who is the Sexy 1?
- 34:59I don't know. Check him out on Facebook.
- 35:00Later. So yeah, I mean.
- 35:04Just give it, he said. Theme said something.
- 35:09Cameraman, wait. They've recreated.
- 35:10Excuse me, so we have the I. Think 80s Alex Gonzalez.
- 35:14He needs some credit because I didn't see one boom in this.
- 35:17No. And you see a lot of booms in
- 35:18these fan films. Who is the editor that's sound?
- 35:22That's sound effects story. Story editors No, no, we want
- 35:26it's. A full cast of people.
- 35:27Designer Janice Finley. Go on, Janice.
- 35:30Oh, she designed that fabulous costume.
- 35:34Director Ryan K Johnson. We salute you, Sir.
- 35:38Well done. I mean, for the first try of
- 35:40this, this might not. This isn't probably my favorite
- 35:46of the bar. This is.
- 35:48Just a great start. It's a.
- 35:49Great introduction. As you go through they get they
- 35:52only get better and better and the quality goes.
- 35:54The last one is the best. But if you're thinking 1984 home
- 35:58cine camera, yeah, if you're doing what you can in a forest.
- 36:02You know, I normally do three fabulous things.
- 36:04Yeah, well, because there's sort of short ones.
- 36:06We'll do one fabulous thing and I know what you're going to
- 36:08choose. What just, I'm going to say the
- 36:11script and just the the crafting of the script and the characters
- 36:15of the Doctor. No, no one call one.
- 36:20I can't choose one. Well, I'm going to choose
- 36:23Barbara Benedetti as the Doctor, of course, purely because no
- 36:26way. Because that cow bag walks
- 36:29straight into this show and owns it from the 1st frame.
- 36:32She stands up and call it Megasco and she's like, no, no,
- 36:35I am the Doctor. It helps that she doesn't know
- 36:37what Doctor Who is and just going into this and just getting
- 36:39the script. Remember, we needed four
- 36:41episodes of The Twin Dilemma to be convinced that that man
- 36:44strangling Perry was the doctor. When he says that, he says at
- 36:46the end, you know, whether you like it or not.
- 36:48She stands up at the in the first scene and goes I'm the
- 36:51doctor and you believe. Her straight into it, yeah.
- 36:54She gets to be funny, you know, whacking the TARDIS to make it
- 36:58materialize, the jokes with the arrow, but she gets to be so
- 37:02authoritative as well, smacking that pile on and saying get the
- 37:05hell off the earth. And I think there must be fans
- 37:07of this doctor out there because someone, us, someone on that
- 37:10Facebook group mocked, mocked up the, you know, the Blu-ray
- 37:13collection and and it was Barbara Benedetti season one
- 37:18with her on there. So there must be fans nowadays.
- 37:21I no, I would love it. Oh my God.
- 37:24You know, Mark and I was recently out of fabulous Bedford
- 37:27Con and they were selling cheapo fan films and now I'm scared
- 37:33that Barbara Benedetti's collection was in there
- 37:35somewhere. Don't think so.
- 37:36No, all those stars, Sophie Aldridge, didn't they?
- 37:39And can we say yes, I've got to get one, mention him.
- 37:42But the fact that they didn't go to the lengths of flying out
- 37:45Sophie Aldridge and getting there in this wait, wait, come
- 37:48on, don't stop there. Because one of the ones we
- 37:51watched. She she went.
- 37:54And absolutely ghastly. No, all we needed was Barbara,
- 37:58Dr. and Carl. Oh.
- 38:00Absolutely. Well, please give it a go.
- 38:01Can you tell? Everybody what episode 2 is?
- 38:04What is the second? One.
- 38:05Hang on, it's there. Look.
- 38:06The man the. The the second episode of this
- 38:10doctor is called Visions of a Trumo, a Trumo, a Trumo.
- 38:17We'll be back for visions of O Trumo 1985.
- 38:22Next time, say goodbye. Bye.
