- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Stuff you Should Know from house Stuff Works
- 0:04Speaker 1: dot com. Hey, and welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh Clark.
- 0:14Speaker 1: There's Charles w Chuck Bryan, There's Jerry. Uh. This is
- 0:18Speaker 1: Stuff you Should Know, the totally new edition. Chris, are
- 0:24Speaker 1: you're looking good? Well? I think you're sort of kidding.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Only only time will tell you want to you want
- 0:32Speaker 1: to break the news? Go ahead? Yeah, I lost another tooth.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I didn't want to mention it. Uh So, here's the
- 0:41Speaker 1: story because I know people were interested. Everybody likes this
- 0:45Speaker 1: tooth saga yours in my dental bloes. It's riveting, but
- 0:48Speaker 1: it also like people feel for you, you know, Yeah,
- 0:51Speaker 1: I think so, and I think the Dennis and oral
- 0:54Speaker 1: surgeons of our audience get a kick out of it.
- 0:56Speaker 1: This is the thrilling part for them. Uh So, I
- 0:59Speaker 1: was on Vaca and as you know, um, I love
- 1:03Speaker 1: palms South Carolina. Um bought tons, well not tons, pounds
- 1:09Speaker 1: and pounds of seafood to cook and was having a
- 1:14Speaker 1: great week grilling fish and scallops and shrimp. Nice. Did
- 1:18Speaker 1: you so you went to like the local seafood market.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's like just one big long encounter of seafood and
- 1:24Speaker 1: it's super cold inside. And I love those places. There's
- 1:27Speaker 1: always like a few bottles of Tony Cocheri's Creole seasoning. Oh,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and all the local stuff like here's the crab boil
- 1:35Speaker 1: in a ziplock that we make. Yes, I love those
- 1:38Speaker 1: places there. Nothing makes a beach vacation more than a
- 1:41Speaker 1: visit to the local seafood places, agreed. And I will
- 1:45Speaker 1: even shout out Simon Seafood and Mount Pleasant Seafood. They're
- 1:49Speaker 1: gonna send you a box of shrimp un refrigerating. Bought
- 1:53Speaker 1: a box of one oysters while we were there, and
- 1:56Speaker 1: we uh, we had oyster happy Hour every night, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: I learned to shuck oysters like a pro nice um.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And I made my own version of frog Moore stew
- 2:06Speaker 1: one night. Can I come on vacation with you guys
- 2:09Speaker 1: next time? We we do it right, man. I bought
- 2:13Speaker 1: probably seven or eight pounds of shrimp, five or six
- 2:15Speaker 1: pounds of scallops, stone crab claws, king crab claws, flounder, snapper, salmon,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you name it. Dude, Did those guys have like a
- 2:26Speaker 1: lean on your house? Now? No? I did spend a
- 2:29Speaker 1: ton of money on the stuff. The other thing that
- 2:31Speaker 1: we enjoyed was um the dips like crab shrimp dip
- 2:35Speaker 1: and salmon dip. Anyway, everything speeding along. It's the final
- 2:41Speaker 1: second to the last night. And I make my own
- 2:44Speaker 1: version of frogmore stew, which is the low country boil
- 2:48Speaker 1: basically of Charleston. Uh, and I bite. We have these
- 2:53Speaker 1: Christini's that we baked. And you know, the one tooth
- 2:57Speaker 1: that I've been saying is going to go. They got
- 2:59Speaker 1: hurt in college and it's been loose for whatever twenty
- 3:04Speaker 1: plus years, and I've been afraid that my daughter's going
- 3:07Speaker 1: to kick it in one day, I was just like
- 3:09Speaker 1: counting down. Uh that that clock. And I've been into
- 3:12Speaker 1: a Christini, heard the felt the crack uh, and immediately
- 3:18Speaker 1: was like there it goes. And Emily and my friends
- 3:20Speaker 1: were like, no really, oh yeah, I know that. I
- 3:24Speaker 1: know that crack that s It does suck if it
- 3:28Speaker 1: hurt at all. Now it never hurts. Um. That is
- 3:31Speaker 1: the one good thing. Like I finished my meal very
- 3:34Speaker 1: gingerly eating on the you know, I've learned how to
- 3:37Speaker 1: eat in the back of my mouth. Yeah, like a Neanderthal.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Use your eyes like a frog. They just go inside
- 3:46Speaker 1: your skull and push the food down, so and made
- 3:49Speaker 1: an appointment the next day. I called around. It was like,
- 3:51Speaker 1: do I go home that, Do I like tough out
- 3:53Speaker 1: the rest of the vacation here and be stressed and
- 3:55Speaker 1: go home and do it, which means I probably can't
- 3:56Speaker 1: get until Friday. Or do I ruined part of a day,
- 4:00Speaker 1: my final beach day doing this locally? Uh? And so
- 4:04Speaker 1: I decided to go in and get it done there,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and two hours out of my day was all I wasted.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Oh wow, that's pretty pretty good, not bad. So big
- 4:14Speaker 1: big shout out to apex Oral and uh Maxila, Maxima
- 4:20Speaker 1: Facial Surgery and Janitorial Services of Mount Pleasant and Dr
- 4:26Speaker 1: Charlotte's marvel She was great? Was she marvelous? She was?
- 4:31Speaker 1: And you know, when I get it done here, I
- 4:33Speaker 1: go under twilight sleep, which I don't feel a thing,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and it messes me up. The whole rest of the day.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'm just groggying in bed. And I didn't want to
- 4:41Speaker 1: do that. And I was like, I'd like to enjoy
- 4:43Speaker 1: the beach and go out to dinner to night. We
- 4:44Speaker 1: had reservations this great place on our final night, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 1: the last night dinner out deal. And she said, well,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I can just inject you and if you're okay with needles,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and you know, I've long talked about the needle and
- 4:56Speaker 1: the gums is the worst thing. And she said, well,
- 4:59Speaker 1: this will also be needle in the roof of your mouth,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and uh, I was like, all right, I gotta do it.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And she stuck me in the roof of my mouth
- 5:08Speaker 1: and my eyes just started running water and I literally said,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm not crying, that's just a reaction. Uh. Yeah, it
- 5:19Speaker 1: was fine. I mean it numbed it up so much.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I didn't feel a thing. And it was kind of
- 5:22Speaker 1: interesting being awake for once during this procedure of abstraction
- 5:27Speaker 1: and bone what do you call it? Yeah, because now
- 5:36Speaker 1: I've learned when they when they take out a tooth,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Now the best practices are you immediately graph bone to
- 5:44Speaker 1: it because you lose it so quickly. Pocket protection is
- 5:47Speaker 1: what it's called. That's awesome. That is so nerdy awesome.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I love it. But man, it is a rough procedure.
- 5:53Speaker 1: They are so rough And now I know why they
- 5:55Speaker 1: knock you out because they don't want you to know
- 5:57Speaker 1: how rough they are with you. Yeah, felt like I
- 6:00Speaker 1: was getting assaulted. Yeah. Yeah, they don't play Dennis don't play,
- 6:05Speaker 1: And that's not the knock Dr Marvel. She did great.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I mean you gotta get in there and do it,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know. So Anyway, I was literally on the beach
- 6:12Speaker 1: two hours later with a Gin and Tonic. That's great.
- 6:15Speaker 1: That is really great, good story story, had it all. Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I had food surgery. Yeah, the beach, Dennis with a
- 6:23Speaker 1: great name, the beach, Yeah, the whole thing. Uh. And
- 6:27Speaker 1: also this also means for people coming to see us
- 6:29Speaker 1: on tour for the remainder of the year. I'm not
- 6:31Speaker 1: even bothering with a insert tooth, thank goodness, because I
- 6:34Speaker 1: had to sit there with it right next to me
- 6:37Speaker 1: staring at me during each show. Nah. I'm used to
- 6:40Speaker 1: it by now. I'm just gonna bubba it up for
- 6:43Speaker 1: the next nine months or whatever. They're gonna love it.
- 6:46Speaker 1: We should start charging double for tickets thing. Um, So
- 6:51Speaker 1: thank you for indulging that story. Well. It leads to
- 6:54Speaker 1: a burning question that I've been trying to ask this
- 6:56Speaker 1: whole time. Were you knew on the beach at any point? No, no,
- 7:04Speaker 1: nude beach at Isle of Palm Huh No, I thought
- 7:08Speaker 1: about during uh a nighttime ocean swim doing it. Uh.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Poto grante. Is that how they say that? Yes, But
- 7:18Speaker 1: then I thought, you know what, I'm being sort of
- 7:20Speaker 1: brave swimming in the ocean at night anyway. Yeah, I'm
- 7:22Speaker 1: not gonna have things exposed. There's something really creepy about
- 7:26Speaker 1: swimming at night in the ocean, particularly agreed. But I
- 7:30Speaker 1: did it and it's great. Yeah, it's really like I
- 7:33Speaker 1: think that's part of the exhilaration is I don't know
- 7:35Speaker 1: what's out here. Yeah, I guess as long as you say,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and I don't care. I'm just gonna enjoy myself and
- 7:43Speaker 1: it would be enjoyable. Yeah, but I did keep saying,
- 7:45Speaker 1: but at least I've got my pants on. My pants Well,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I did have pants on, ad tuxedo pants on, but
- 7:50Speaker 1: there's a lot of at tuxedo pants on, as is
- 7:54Speaker 1: per tradition at Isle of Palms to cover your junk
- 7:58Speaker 1: from the sea turtles. Yeah, that's what you do, that
- 8:00Speaker 1: you swim the beach and tux pants. Right, So this
- 8:03Speaker 1: is that's almost the exact opposite then, of a traditional
- 8:07Speaker 1: New beach, which is what we're talking about. Have you
- 8:09Speaker 1: ever been to one? I have, Uh, there, No, I
- 8:14Speaker 1: went and visited. I just went and looked for a second.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah no, But I wasn't like poking people with a
- 8:20Speaker 1: stick or anything like that. Like I just wanted to see, like, okay,
- 8:24Speaker 1: what is this? And I'll tell you. I'll tell you
- 8:26Speaker 1: what really drew me over to look? Um you mean?
- 8:31Speaker 1: And I were down in Florida and there's a there's
- 8:34Speaker 1: a nude beach. It's a clothing optional and I believe
- 8:37Speaker 1: unofficial nude beach at the Canaveral National Seashore there and uh, okay, yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 1: that's right. We'll share our stories, okay. And um, like,
- 8:48Speaker 1: we drove down at one point just just to kind
- 8:50Speaker 1: of see, you know, and sure enough, there was a
- 8:53Speaker 1: woman walking around just wearing shorts and that was it. Um.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But what really got me to go check was we
- 9:01Speaker 1: saw this girl who must have been seventeen or something
- 9:04Speaker 1: and she was totally closed, like fully dressed, not even
- 9:07Speaker 1: wearing like a swimsuit, She's just dressed. And she was
- 9:11Speaker 1: coming back from the beach with her hand over her
- 9:14Speaker 1: mouth and her eyes like the size of bread plates.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And her mom was sitting there laughing at her, waiting
- 9:20Speaker 1: at the car, watching her come back like this. And
- 9:23Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta go to seat. So I
- 9:24Speaker 1: went and looked, and I was like, yeah, there's a
- 9:26Speaker 1: couple of naked people. Um, they're all dudes, and uh, well,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I've seen the nude beach now. But at the same time,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I was like, I would love to like just go
- 9:36Speaker 1: nude in a nude beach. But the more I did
- 9:39Speaker 1: this research tomorrow, I was like, I could take or
- 9:42Speaker 1: leave it. I have no problem and probably would still
- 9:45Speaker 1: like to like go nude at a very secluded nude beach.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But I get the impression that public nude beaches and
- 9:52Speaker 1: I don't even think I would enjoy like a nudist
- 9:54Speaker 1: resort nude beach. It would have to just be like
- 9:56Speaker 1: a remote, deserted island. Not because of any shame or
- 10:00Speaker 1: anything like that, but because I just I think that
- 10:03Speaker 1: that would be the way that I most enjoyed the
- 10:06Speaker 1: experience of just being nude out there on the beach.
- 10:10Speaker 1: You know what I mean, nude on the beach with
- 10:11Speaker 1: just like you and your wife, right, and that's it, Yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you know, just hanging out. You want to own your
- 10:18Speaker 1: own beach. I guess I think that's what I'm getting at.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I'm hoping a wealthy listener will send US one. Uh
- 10:24Speaker 1: so here's my experience with that very beach. Was that
- 10:27Speaker 1: play Linda or Klondike? All right, So my deal was
- 10:33Speaker 1: many years ago. I did a long, like three month
- 10:36Speaker 1: out west trip with my best friend Brett, and we
- 10:40Speaker 1: we started in Atlanta and said, all right, what's where
- 10:42Speaker 1: should we go first? And this is pre internet and
- 10:46Speaker 1: you know when you're doing book research. And I said,
- 10:49Speaker 1: there's this place in Florida, your Canaveral that's called Klondike Beach.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And I said, and I don't know if this is true,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but what I read is that there is a law
- 10:59Speaker 1: enforcement acuum there because no one if there's some overlap
- 11:04Speaker 1: with counties, national land where there's a space where there's
- 11:09Speaker 1: no law. Yeah, there's supposedly a place. And I think
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yosemite National Park that's like that too. Well, yeah, I've
- 11:15Speaker 1: heard that stupid story where you can like kill somebody
- 11:17Speaker 1: and getting I don't think that true. Well, I don't know.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I don't think this is they would remember reading the
- 11:23Speaker 1: article and there they would get just you know, somehow. Um,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but I think there wasn't like I think it wasn't
- 11:30Speaker 1: no law, but there wasn't technically there was no legal
- 11:35Speaker 1: overseer of this one area, and that was Klondike Beach,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and there were you could there were hippie smoking weed
- 11:42Speaker 1: and nudis, and I was like, that's where we should start.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I have no idea what drew me, because you know,
- 11:49Speaker 1: it wasn't like I was going for either one of
- 11:50Speaker 1: those things. There's that sounds a bit like a place
- 11:53Speaker 1: called Wreck Beach in Vancouver, where it's not like there's
- 11:57Speaker 1: no jurisdiction or questionable jurisdiction, it's just really hard to
- 12:02Speaker 1: get to. There's like four hundred steps down to the beach.
- 12:06Speaker 1: So apparently the cops a long time ago said whatever,
- 12:09Speaker 1: you guys can do whatever you want, we don't care.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So not only is it a nude beach, it's like
- 12:13Speaker 1: a drug adult um, drunken beach um. But apparently it's
- 12:18Speaker 1: a lot of fun. But I supposedly they started cracking
- 12:20Speaker 1: down on it recently and it's not as fun as
- 12:23Speaker 1: it once was. Well, I do remember. Actually what drew
- 12:25Speaker 1: me was you can you can camp on the beach there,
- 12:28Speaker 1: which is sort of rare too. It wasn't a campground.
- 12:32Speaker 1: There's like back country camping on the sand, uh, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: there's not a ton of places in the States where
- 12:37Speaker 1: you can do that. Yeah, that sounds kind of fun. Actually,
- 12:40Speaker 1: it was waking up to the sound of waves like that.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's wonderful. Uh. And we did go down there and
- 12:44Speaker 1: we did camp and it was a great way to
- 12:46Speaker 1: start the trip, and we did There's this dude walked
- 12:49Speaker 1: up to us this and of course I think this
- 12:51Speaker 1: is usually the story this. You know, probably fifty something
- 12:55Speaker 1: year old man but naked, walks up to us and
- 12:58Speaker 1: just starts a conversation. Oh huh. So I got a
- 13:02Speaker 1: lot of like differing advice from doing research on this. Yeah, well,
- 13:08Speaker 1: how so the guy started a conversation with you, Um,
- 13:12Speaker 1: what did you do? Did you go, hey, Bob, good
- 13:14Speaker 1: to meet you. A nice penis like that Saturday Night
- 13:16Speaker 1: Live sketch. No, I think we just tried to treat
- 13:19Speaker 1: it like a normal conversation, which it was. The I
- 13:22Speaker 1: guess what I've been hearing differing things on is that
- 13:25Speaker 1: at nude beaches you will possibly be surprised by the
- 13:30Speaker 1: standoffishness of the nude bathers. Um, you might be expecting
- 13:37Speaker 1: free spirits like Bob, the guy you met, right, Yeah,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I think the deal is and we will be corrected
- 13:43Speaker 1: through listener mail. But I think if you are clothed,
- 13:47Speaker 1: they may be a little more standoffish. But from what
- 13:50Speaker 1: I understand, if you're not clothed, that's that's all kind
- 13:52Speaker 1: of part of the community, and we should do a
- 13:55Speaker 1: larger one on nudists. At some point I could not
- 13:58Speaker 1: agree more. I I had an idea, but I had
- 14:01Speaker 1: no idea how um lengthy and longstanding the the nu
- 14:09Speaker 1: nudism movement is, or the naturism movement, I should say, yeah, naturalists, Like,
- 14:14Speaker 1: from what I understand, there very much a community, and uh,
- 14:19Speaker 1: that's the whole point is to normalize it to where
- 14:22Speaker 1: it's just like talking on the beach with anybody, right, Like,
- 14:25Speaker 1: it's not like any different than being clothed. And that's
- 14:29Speaker 1: their whole bag is Hey, this is just this is
- 14:32Speaker 1: how we come into the world, and we have all
- 14:35Speaker 1: shamed each other with our bodies over the years to
- 14:38Speaker 1: where we have clothed ourselves. And of course, I you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: me growing up, Southern Baptists have a very weird relationship
- 14:44Speaker 1: with nudity, to the point where I'm like, yeah, man,
- 14:49Speaker 1: like what's the big deal. Europeans have got it right,
- 14:52Speaker 1: It's just your body who cares? And then the other
- 14:55Speaker 1: half of me says, oh my god, put some clothes on.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You know, do you want to go to Hell today?
- 15:02Speaker 1: And it's not even that it's just I guess I'm
- 15:04Speaker 1: kind of shy. Yeah, but I mean I'm sure it's
- 15:07Speaker 1: it's ingrained shyness for sure, from from an upbringing like that. Um,
- 15:13Speaker 1: so you you definitely hit on something, right. So when
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're talking about the naturist movement, like if you go
- 15:19Speaker 1: to a naturist resort, like a specific a nude beach
- 15:23Speaker 1: that's part of a naturist resort where you have to say,
- 15:26Speaker 1: be a member to get in or something like that, Um, yes,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you're going to find people who are very happy that
- 15:34Speaker 1: you're there, and they're very happy to be naked, and
- 15:37Speaker 1: everybody's very happy that everyone's naked, right, Um, but you're
- 15:42Speaker 1: also probably going to encounter something like compulsory uh, compulsory
- 15:47Speaker 1: nudity where if you're there, you have to be naked.
- 15:50Speaker 1: They don't want anybody coming along and be like, what's
- 15:52Speaker 1: this all about? What are you guys doing over here?
- 15:55Speaker 1: Shake your shake your money maker for me? You know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: they're not into that, so they have to have. They
- 16:01Speaker 1: have to have their own UM set aside resorts. It's
- 16:04Speaker 1: like their own place. It's like a private area UM.
- 16:08Speaker 1: But it's say like a different kind of beach, like
- 16:11Speaker 1: a clothing optional beach, where it's a public beach that
- 16:14Speaker 1: allows nudity but it isn't compulsory. That's when it seems
- 16:19Speaker 1: to UM. It seems to be kind of like paradise
- 16:23Speaker 1: lost for the naturists. Historically speaking, there definitely is yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 1: and it seems like just about every country that has
- 16:33Speaker 1: beaches has nude beaches, and if they are public nude
- 16:38Speaker 1: beaches where clothing is optional, it seems like the naturists
- 16:42Speaker 1: who are actually there to just enjoy being naked, it
- 16:45Speaker 1: has nothing to do with sex. Their kids are running
- 16:48Speaker 1: around naked, the whole families there. It's very family oriented.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Naked beach UM tend to lose control of it because
- 16:56Speaker 1: outside elements usually come in, start like partying, having public sex,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, this nude beach gets
- 17:04Speaker 1: a terrible reputation and the government steps in. Local people
- 17:09Speaker 1: complain and usually when they do, it's successful, and the
- 17:11Speaker 1: government steps in and nobody can be naked anymore, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's ruined for all the naturists. Yeah, and that that
- 17:18Speaker 1: is not the same thing at all as topless speeches
- 17:21Speaker 1: that you find um in in Europe and in some
- 17:25Speaker 1: places here in the United States. I went to one
- 17:28Speaker 1: of those two, and I mean you call it topless speech,
- 17:31Speaker 1: it was I think it was just a beach, you know.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I think a lot of the beaches in europea topless.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's not like a big thing. And we saw, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: ladies with their uh, with their no bikini top on.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And of course, being a kid I was young, I
- 17:47Speaker 1: was like, oh, hey, you're like that wolf. But I
- 17:52Speaker 1: was respectful because I knew even then, like, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: you don't want to ugle somebody because that's probably not
- 17:57Speaker 1: too cool. But then even as a young guy, it
- 18:01Speaker 1: normalized and I was like, oh, well that's just a
- 18:04Speaker 1: body part. It ain't a big deal. Yeah. Yeah, that
- 18:07Speaker 1: after you turn i don't know, nineteen or twenty, it's
- 18:12Speaker 1: really easy to become desensitized to that kind of stuff,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you know. So let's take a break. Man had a
- 18:18Speaker 1: lot of good set up there. Yeah, that was a
- 18:20Speaker 1: lot of set up ethan penises and all kinds of moves.
- 18:24Speaker 1: The whole shebang. We'll be right back everybody. That's why
- 18:30Speaker 1: Ska that you should know, why skin should know knows
- 18:38Speaker 1: but Clarkin sk so Chuck, You've mentioned it a couple
- 18:56Speaker 1: of times, and it seems like anybody who even basically
- 18:59Speaker 1: knows about New Eaches tends to think of Europe. And
- 19:03Speaker 1: for good reason too. There was a survey in two
- 19:06Speaker 1: thousand and sixteen that surveyed I think like um ninety
- 19:10Speaker 1: different countries or something like that was a pretty extensive
- 19:12Speaker 1: survey to find out what the attitudes were towards nude
- 19:16Speaker 1: sunbathing on public beaches, and they found that Austrians, the Austrians,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I really would not have guessed the Austrians, and I'm
- 19:24Speaker 1: not I'm not missed speaking Australians. I mean the people
- 19:28Speaker 1: from Austria, I don't know. I don't know. I wish
- 19:36Speaker 1: I did, but I don't know. At any rate they're
- 19:39Speaker 1: fine with nudism. They at the very least, I'm sure
- 19:42Speaker 1: they have sandy lakes. They're fine with with nude sunbathing
- 19:46Speaker 1: at the beach. Um Something like seventies six percent of
- 19:49Speaker 1: Austrians say it's quote absolutely acceptable to sunbathe in the
- 19:53Speaker 1: nude in public um. It used to be Germany was
- 19:58Speaker 1: the was the champion of cool with nude some babe
- 20:01Speaker 1: and their Paymoent's very famous shore line but they yes,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and the North Sea, but they they fell the second place.
- 20:09Speaker 1: German say it's absolutely acceptable, and you're sure it didn't
- 20:11Speaker 1: say Australians right because they're waiting. Okay, yeah, I know.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Well Australia has a has a um a roller coaster
- 20:22Speaker 1: relationship with nude beaches. I think it depends on who's
- 20:26Speaker 1: in charge of the culture at any given point in time. Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Well maybe while we're there will be in charge of
- 20:31Speaker 1: the culture for a short time. Nudity everywhere gets grossed out.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Our shows are about to get raucous. You never know
- 20:42Speaker 1: a nude show, how about that? So no, no, absolutely not.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I mean the audience, not us. So I'm still not
- 20:49Speaker 1: comfortable with that either. Well that's how they say. To
- 20:52Speaker 1: the reason I say that is because to Live Cruise
- 20:54Speaker 1: show they say, the picture of your audience in the nude.
- 20:57Speaker 1: If you're nervous, I think they say underwear. Oh okay, gotcha,
- 21:02Speaker 1: I remember that Brady Bunch. That's all I know. Uh oh,
- 21:09Speaker 1: so I don't know Australians but I do know eight
- 21:13Speaker 1: percent of Americans say it's absolutely acceptable to somebody in
- 21:16Speaker 1: the news. That seems about right, pretty low percentage, that's
- 21:18Speaker 1: what i'd figure. Well, you know who had an even
- 21:21Speaker 1: lower percentage, UM, it's Italians. Italians say they are not
- 21:29Speaker 1: okay with having somebody's somebay nude by them in on
- 21:33Speaker 1: a public beach. It surprises me as well, but such
- 21:37Speaker 1: as the way, but they're kind of an outlier as
- 21:39Speaker 1: far as Europe goes. In Europe actually again have some
- 21:42Speaker 1: of the earliest nude beaches around. UM. This article says
- 21:47Speaker 1: that like the first one was in Bordeaux in France,
- 21:52Speaker 1: that that um started around after World War Two. But
- 21:56Speaker 1: I actually saw footage of a nude beach in Georgia,
- 22:00Speaker 1: a country not the state from dating from the nineteen twenties.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So as far as nudity goes, Georgia is even more
- 22:08Speaker 1: progressive than France. Apparently. I don't know about progressive. I
- 22:12Speaker 1: think sometimes it's just you know, freaks are gonna let
- 22:15Speaker 1: their flag fly. No, you got it, you got it,
- 22:18Speaker 1: And and if you've got a group of them together,
- 22:21Speaker 1: I don't care. If it's nineteen twenty and Georgia then
- 22:24Speaker 1: they find each other, they're gonna do it. I don't
- 22:28Speaker 1: think that necessarily means that Georgia was super progressive, you
- 22:31Speaker 1: know what I mean? Okay, I see what you mean.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Or maybe it does. I don't know, but I'm just saying.
- 22:34Speaker 1: And that's the case with these a lot of these
- 22:36Speaker 1: nude beaches. Is it bears pointing out. Some of these
- 22:39Speaker 1: are sanctioned and some of them are just have happened
- 22:43Speaker 1: over the years to this extent where like you said,
- 22:47Speaker 1: the local cops are just kind of like they're not
- 22:50Speaker 1: hurting anybody. This is sort of where they gather and
- 22:54Speaker 1: everyone knows that, so they can either choose to go
- 22:57Speaker 1: there or stay away from there. And these places are
- 22:59Speaker 1: are usually somewhat removed too. Not all the times, but usually,
- 23:04Speaker 1: Like I remember with Klondike Beach, it wasn't that it
- 23:07Speaker 1: wasn't like the main beach. You had to kind of
- 23:09Speaker 1: work a bit to get there. Yep, it's almost always,
- 23:12Speaker 1: if not remote as far as just beaches in general go,
- 23:17Speaker 1: it is like the say, the northernmost part or the
- 23:20Speaker 1: southernmost part, so it's secluded in some way, shape or form.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I read this fascinating article about um a nude beach
- 23:30Speaker 1: off of Palm Beach called air Force Beach, and it
- 23:35Speaker 1: was a private island owned by John D. MacArthur of
- 23:40Speaker 1: the famous John D. And Catherine Tine MacArthur. And he yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and he um made his billions selling insurance, I believe,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and he uh I apparently was a bit of a
- 23:53Speaker 1: naturist himself, but he had like he allowed people to
- 23:58Speaker 1: use his beach and he also loud one of the
- 24:01Speaker 1: sides of the beach to become a nude beach. And
- 24:04Speaker 1: there was a big struggle because he died as he
- 24:06Speaker 1: was signing over um or his son was signing over
- 24:11Speaker 1: the deed to this beach to the county with the
- 24:14Speaker 1: stipulation that this part remain nude, and he died before
- 24:19Speaker 1: the nude part document was signed. So the county took
- 24:22Speaker 1: the beach and was like, no, we're not going to
- 24:25Speaker 1: and there's been a struggle ever since. I think that
- 24:27Speaker 1: was in the nineties when he died um, but it
- 24:30Speaker 1: was it was a a lost nude beach. But for
- 24:33Speaker 1: a while there there was apparently something like five thousand
- 24:36Speaker 1: people a day coming there to some bathe nude on
- 24:38Speaker 1: the weekends. That was one of America's most populated nude beaches.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And it was all because it was this old rich
- 24:46Speaker 1: guy's um. He was okay with it. Didn't have that said.
- 24:50Speaker 1: These penises are brought to in part by the John D.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And Katherine Pete maccarthur Foundation. And you push a button
- 24:56Speaker 1: and it's read by Ira Glass. Yeah. Actually I readn't
- 24:59Speaker 1: read those DESI can you do it? Though? I think
- 25:01Speaker 1: everyone wants to hear now, I don't think so. I've
- 25:04Speaker 1: retired by iveryglass impression. Uh. The other thing with some
- 25:08Speaker 1: of these beaches is um like sometimes they're so remote
- 25:12Speaker 1: and removed. This it's just sand and you're on your own.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Like they may not even have like trash cans and stuff.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Other ones are a little more advanced and they might
- 25:21Speaker 1: have activities. They might have a beach well, a toilet
- 25:26Speaker 1: what do you call it, like a like a bath house, uh,
- 25:30Speaker 1: in a shower or maybe they even serve booze. Um.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But it bears pointing out that I don't I think
- 25:37Speaker 1: a lot of Americans, and especially like more conservative in
- 25:42Speaker 1: the kind of way I grew up, more conservative religious
- 25:45Speaker 1: Americans might think that's just like a hedonistic sexual free
- 25:51Speaker 1: for all with these weirdos, and that is generally not
- 25:55Speaker 1: the case at all. It is a bunch of old
- 25:58Speaker 1: people naked and talking to each other about, you know,
- 26:03Speaker 1: whatever the economy, how the pitch are biting. Yeah, I
- 26:06Speaker 1: don't think how the fish are biting, as long as
- 26:10Speaker 1: it's not sea turtles, I guess, um. The the we
- 26:14Speaker 1: can't really overstate that a genuine naturist nudists nude beach
- 26:22Speaker 1: has nothing to do with sex. It might be a
- 26:25Speaker 1: sensual experience to have, like you know, was one guy
- 26:28Speaker 1: quoted in the article says, you know, like just being
- 26:31Speaker 1: out there and feeling the breeze and feeling the water
- 26:34Speaker 1: and all that, it's sensual. But this guy is talking
- 26:37Speaker 1: about the senses, like like the tactile sense is just
- 26:41Speaker 1: making him feel good. He's not saying like, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 1: I got a giant erection right because of it. It's
- 26:48Speaker 1: not about sex. And again, a lot of these places
- 26:51Speaker 1: are more family friendly than even adjacent beaches. Yeah, and
- 26:56Speaker 1: there is no shame in our bodies, and we respect
- 27:00Speaker 1: to each other's bodies. I mean, they're probably the least
- 27:03Speaker 1: or most open minded body type community on planet Earth, right, Yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you would think so, you know, like there's no body
- 27:11Speaker 1: shaming and nudist communities that's the whole point because they
- 27:14Speaker 1: all come together to accept where we all uh hang
- 27:19Speaker 1: in and and wrinkle and all the things that happened
- 27:24Speaker 1: to bodies over the years. It's sprout weird goat hairs. Well,
- 27:28Speaker 1: you should take care of those. I was really even
- 27:31Speaker 1: the nudists are like, you need to do something about
- 27:34Speaker 1: that that you just come back to your little cabana
- 27:35Speaker 1: and there's a like a pair of tweezers and scissors
- 27:39Speaker 1: on your pillow. I was reading, Um, dude, Milwaukee used
- 27:42Speaker 1: to have a nude beach. H Yeah, I was pretty
- 27:45Speaker 1: surprised to hear that one. But it was called Paradise
- 27:48Speaker 1: Beach and it was like a legit. I think it
- 27:51Speaker 1: was clothing optional because it was county. Usually if it's
- 27:54Speaker 1: a government beach, they can't legally exclude anybody, so it
- 27:58Speaker 1: has to be clothing optional. Um, but I think it
- 28:02Speaker 1: was clothing optionals Paradise Beach it but it was like
- 28:04Speaker 1: family oriented nudist beach um. And it was Adjason or
- 28:09Speaker 1: just down the beach from a beach called Bradford Beach,
- 28:12Speaker 1: and that was a um you had to wear clothing beach.
- 28:16Speaker 1: It's not nudist, but it was a party beach, and
- 28:18Speaker 1: Bradford Beach, where you had to wear clothes, was a
- 28:21Speaker 1: bigger party beach. Then um Paradise Beach, which was a
- 28:26Speaker 1: clothing optional beach. And that's usually how it how it is,
- 28:30Speaker 1: although eventually, and this is normally the case, sometime in
- 28:34Speaker 1: the early nineties, some of the people from Bradford Beach
- 28:36Speaker 1: started hanging out naked on Paradise Beach. Started like getting
- 28:41Speaker 1: wasted and having sex, and it wasn't family friendly anymore,
- 28:45Speaker 1: and there were complaints, and then the Paradise Beach is
- 28:47Speaker 1: no longer. Yeah, that the whole sex thing is weird
- 28:51Speaker 1: to me. It's not like a bathing suit is if
- 28:54Speaker 1: that's the barrier that keeps you from just going hog
- 28:56Speaker 1: wild sexually, it's not much of a barrier. No, it's true.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I get the impression that this hall Over Park in Miami,
- 29:05Speaker 1: it is known as the largest new beach in the
- 29:06Speaker 1: United States and one of the most popular in the world.
- 29:09Speaker 1: So it says our article, Um, I get the feeling
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's it's way more of a party scene because have
- 29:16Speaker 1: you ever been there? No, I was reading, Yeah, I
- 29:19Speaker 1: read about it, and I looked up pictures and of course,
- 29:21Speaker 1: you know, I'm sitting to my destiny looking at new
- 29:23Speaker 1: people on the beach. It's just part of the job.
- 29:26Speaker 1: But um, there's pictures of you know, it looks like
- 29:30Speaker 1: a spring break with like forty people posing and they're
- 29:33Speaker 1: all naked. And these were younger people too. This wasn't
- 29:36Speaker 1: like the older set. I mean, it's all kind of
- 29:39Speaker 1: people older and younger. But and again, just because I
- 29:43Speaker 1: am who I am, I was like, oh, well, that's
- 29:46Speaker 1: kind of completely normal actually, and the other part of
- 29:48Speaker 1: you went, oh my god, what is going on there?
- 29:52Speaker 1: I just don't know what to think. It's funny, it
- 29:55Speaker 1: is funny and sad. But I mean the very fact
- 29:58Speaker 1: that you are aware of it means that there's hope
- 30:01Speaker 1: for addressing it, like once and for all. Yeah, I
- 30:04Speaker 1: think the nudity problem. Yeah, you just go one way
- 30:09Speaker 1: or the other. Either be like I'm totally fine with nudity.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I'm going to make this my mission. Just be fine
- 30:13Speaker 1: with nudity totally, or just go never nude. Just always
- 30:18Speaker 1: worry like that pair of like daisy dukes under your clothes. No,
- 30:22Speaker 1: but like you said, I am fine with it in
- 30:24Speaker 1: my adult, rational, evolved brain. But that shame is so
- 30:28Speaker 1: ingrained childhood. It's really hard to get you. It'll get you.
- 30:32Speaker 1: All right, let's take another break out, how about that,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and we'll come back and talk a little bit about
- 30:37Speaker 1: Cape Cod and uh, some of the behaviors you should
- 30:40Speaker 1: obviously avoid. That's why scame you should know. But Josh
- 30:55Speaker 1: Clark define s all right, So I promised a little
- 31:09Speaker 1: cape Cod talk. We mentioned hall Over Park. There's Blacks
- 31:13Speaker 1: Beach in San Diego, very popular, long standing nude beach. Yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 1: one of the first in the US, I think, yeah
- 31:19Speaker 1: for sure. And that of course San Diego they I
- 31:23Speaker 1: figured they would have one there. Yeah, dude, San Diego
- 31:26Speaker 1: beaches in the seventies were like whatever you wanted to do. Yeah,
- 31:30Speaker 1: it's like Three Company all day long. Yeah, but like
- 31:32Speaker 1: the place, not just the innuendo, Like the stuff they
- 31:36Speaker 1: were making innuendo about was actually going on. Right. Uh.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I always think of um, whenever I think of like
- 31:43Speaker 1: San Diego in the seventies and Three Company, I think
- 31:45Speaker 1: of the what those bars called fern bars, Yeah, fern
- 31:49Speaker 1: bars that we covered in the Bars episode. Yeah. The
- 31:52Speaker 1: Regal Beagle was like literally a firm bar. I think
- 31:56Speaker 1: they had ferns there. So anyway, Cape Cod and then
- 31:59Speaker 1: I K seventies in Massachusetts had a bit of a
- 32:04Speaker 1: fight going on their hands. Uh. The NPS National Park
- 32:08Speaker 1: Service outlawed public nudity um and it was a big
- 32:12Speaker 1: deal because there are guests in parts of Cape Cod.
- 32:15Speaker 1: There were people that would go nude. UM. It ended
- 32:18Speaker 1: up in lawsuits and the nude band was upheld. And
- 32:23Speaker 1: they believe still are the only national park with a
- 32:27Speaker 1: specific ban on nudity. Yeah, it's not I didn't know that.
- 32:31Speaker 1: It's not a federally it's not a federal law in
- 32:35Speaker 1: any federal park apparently except Cape Cod. Now, yep, it's
- 32:39Speaker 1: the only one. So congratulations Cape Cod. You really showed
- 32:43Speaker 1: your butt. Yeah, and I love it. Here it says
- 32:46Speaker 1: now if there are conflicts, the park employees attempt to
- 32:49Speaker 1: resolve it informally, right, Like I think everyone is just like,
- 32:54Speaker 1: come on, you know, can we just work this out?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Like why don't you go over here? You go over
- 32:58Speaker 1: there and don't look at them, and can I go back,
- 33:01Speaker 1: you know, to my office, which is which you need
- 33:06Speaker 1: a lobster roll, rough hewn log cabin of my own
- 33:09Speaker 1: making um, so yeah, you you. Cape cod is kind
- 33:15Speaker 1: of an outlier. Usually there are like a nude beach
- 33:19Speaker 1: getting legislated. It will go one of two ways, like
- 33:22Speaker 1: they it'll start with a beach that people just say,
- 33:25Speaker 1: this is our new nude beach. We're gonna start being
- 33:28Speaker 1: nude here, taking my pants off. It's very remote. Normally
- 33:32Speaker 1: it's hard to get to and a lot of nudists
- 33:34Speaker 1: prefer it that way, like it's a little harder for
- 33:36Speaker 1: them to get to it, but that also means it's
- 33:38Speaker 1: a little harder for um perverts and um, you know,
- 33:43Speaker 1: look you lose to get to well. Plus, remote beaches
- 33:46Speaker 1: are the best kind of beaches, you know. They end
- 33:48Speaker 1: up getting a score with like a very remote kind
- 33:51Speaker 1: of tranquil scene. Uh. And then so you've got that,
- 33:55Speaker 1: it will be an unofficial public beach, public nude beach. Uh.
- 33:59Speaker 1: And then something will happen and the local government will
- 34:03Speaker 1: either legislate that um officially it's clothing optional or else. No,
- 34:09Speaker 1: it's not everybody needs to get dressed. Um, Normally it's
- 34:13Speaker 1: every everybody needs to get dressed. Because usually it's the
- 34:16Speaker 1: result of a complaint, like there's a there's some residents
- 34:19Speaker 1: or an h O, a group or somebody nearby who
- 34:23Speaker 1: considers that their beach and doesn't want a bunch of
- 34:25Speaker 1: naked people frolicking around. And if the nudists are trying
- 34:29Speaker 1: to make their case like no, we just want to
- 34:31Speaker 1: be naked, we're not perverts or anything like that. If
- 34:34Speaker 1: they're making their case, it's usually again underscored by people
- 34:38Speaker 1: like getting wasted and having public sex on the nude
- 34:41Speaker 1: beach um, which brings us chuck. I think to um
- 34:46Speaker 1: where we should share some tips to people who are
- 34:48Speaker 1: thinking of maybe going to a new beach. And the
- 34:51Speaker 1: cardinal rule of a genuine nude beach is no sex.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Don't have sex on the beach. No one wants to
- 34:59Speaker 1: see that. Yeah, I think the first two cardinal rules
- 35:02Speaker 1: of a nude beach, don't have sex and don't be
- 35:05Speaker 1: a creep, are the same rules at a regular beach. Definitely,
- 35:09Speaker 1: just don't you don't want to be a creep with
- 35:11Speaker 1: your clothes on or yeah, this one says, you know,
- 35:14Speaker 1: it goes to a lot of trouble to say, like
- 35:17Speaker 1: don't take pictures of people. Don't take pictures they I
- 35:21Speaker 1: mean they mentioned selfies, like if you're in the background.
- 35:24Speaker 1: You may not realize someone's in the background, or god forbid,
- 35:28Speaker 1: if there's a child in the background, family, Like, just
- 35:32Speaker 1: put your camera away for a bit. Yeah, I mean, like,
- 35:35Speaker 1: if you're taking pictures and there's a naked kid running around,
- 35:38Speaker 1: do you are really putting your life in jeopardy depending
- 35:41Speaker 1: on that kid's father and what his opinions are and
- 35:44Speaker 1: creeps very true. So but again my point is is
- 35:48Speaker 1: that applies to regular beaches too, fully clothed beaches. Don't
- 35:54Speaker 1: take pictures of people at the beach. That's that's creepy
- 35:56Speaker 1: and wrong. Agreed. What else, what's another two? Uh? This
- 36:02Speaker 1: says and these were we should point out these were
- 36:04Speaker 1: from the Hollover Beach website. Uh. And that's the party
- 36:08Speaker 1: beach in Miami. Um. It says, don't just sit right
- 36:14Speaker 1: down next to another person if there's like plenty of
- 36:17Speaker 1: space on the beach. And again that's sort of like
- 36:19Speaker 1: a regular beach. It's it would be a little weird
- 36:22Speaker 1: on a variant. When I was just at Ala Palms,
- 36:26Speaker 1: not many people there on a weekday this time of year,
- 36:29Speaker 1: like hundreds of yards in between blankets and chairs. If
- 36:34Speaker 1: someone would have sat down right next to me, I
- 36:37Speaker 1: would have been like, uh, that's a little weird. Yeah, uh,
- 36:42Speaker 1: why don't you go over there or over there or
- 36:45Speaker 1: anywhere else? And especially truing a nude beach and then
- 36:50Speaker 1: you turn and the person is actually made of stand
- 36:53Speaker 1: and they blow away? What what is that? I just
- 36:58Speaker 1: made it up? Okay, now everything's a reference alright, sort
- 37:02Speaker 1: of weird fantasy film or something, maybe Dune. Uh. This
- 37:08Speaker 1: thing says be sure to bring a towel. Yeah, this
- 37:12Speaker 1: was good advice. Yeah, I mean that's pretty obvious. And
- 37:14Speaker 1: they say that most people knew to bring two towels,
- 37:18Speaker 1: one to sit on and put all your junk on
- 37:23Speaker 1: that can get potentially gross, right, and then another one
- 37:28Speaker 1: to actually dry your face with. Right. I would have
- 37:30Speaker 1: brought a towel just to dry off with, but it
- 37:32Speaker 1: wouldn't have occurred to me, like, no, you also need
- 37:35Speaker 1: to bring a towel to sit on. Like, if you're
- 37:37Speaker 1: gonna set a stool or chair or something, nobody wants
- 37:40Speaker 1: your butt funk on their chair. That's groty, and you
- 37:43Speaker 1: don't want somebody else's either, So let's think here. Yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 1: I would say a beach chair rental company at a
- 37:48Speaker 1: nude beach is probably not thriving, don't you think. Yeah,
- 37:53Speaker 1: I mean that should be a tip as well, like
- 37:55Speaker 1: maybe bring your own chair. Another tip that it said
- 37:59Speaker 1: is if you get an erection, the there's ways of
- 38:04Speaker 1: taking care of that. Get in the water, turn over
- 38:06Speaker 1: onto your stomach. Think about no one's playing baseball. Uh,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I mean if you're getting an direction on a on
- 38:14Speaker 1: a nude beach, I don't know, that's I'm not sure
- 38:18Speaker 1: what to say about that. Well, you could be like yeah,
- 38:21Speaker 1: maybe yeah, I didn't really think about that. No, But
- 38:24Speaker 1: I mean, but even if you're a dude and it's
- 38:26Speaker 1: your first time or something gets you just right, Yeah,
- 38:28Speaker 1: there's gotta gotta be some sort of etiquette for that.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I think the point of this is is like, don't
- 38:33Speaker 1: just walk around like, hey, everybody, it's happening, check it out,
- 38:37Speaker 1: you know, like you want to just kind of keep
- 38:39Speaker 1: that to yourself, is the point. Yeah? I would think
- 38:42Speaker 1: that would be uh a big like stay away from me,
- 38:46Speaker 1: signed to be other people, right, you know, you could
- 38:49Speaker 1: take an eye out. O. Man, I really feel like
- 38:53Speaker 1: we may have crossed the lines here there in this episode,
- 38:56Speaker 1: and I'm not sure. Yeah do you think so? No?
- 39:00Speaker 1: I just I'm surprised that I'm able to make it
- 39:03Speaker 1: through this episode. To be honest, I'll bet there's a
- 39:05Speaker 1: lot of people who are like, can't I can't listen
- 39:07Speaker 1: to johsh and Chuck talking about this one. Bring sunscreen
- 39:11Speaker 1: of course, um and that you know, kind of kidding around,
- 39:15Speaker 1: but definitely not getting around because they make the very
- 39:20Speaker 1: fine point if you're in your twenties or thirties or
- 39:23Speaker 1: forties and it's your first time ever doing this, then
- 39:25Speaker 1: by all accounts, it's probably the first time your body
- 39:28Speaker 1: parts down there, your private parts, they have seen the sun.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And that's a bad recipe. You know. Can you imagine
- 39:37Speaker 1: I can't sunburn there? Could not imagine because this sunburn
- 39:43Speaker 1: will ruin your vacation period. I can imagine sunburned penis
- 39:50Speaker 1: would really put a dent in things. Yeah, this article
- 39:53Speaker 1: suggests even bringing a hat to use, which I thought
- 39:57Speaker 1: was smart, yet helmet that would definitely work. I got
- 40:04Speaker 1: a couple more things. Um So. Back in the of
- 40:10Speaker 1: the nineteenth century, the Victorians were pretty well known for
- 40:14Speaker 1: being pretty prudish. Right, Um, on the surface, that is, yes,
- 40:20Speaker 1: exactly on the surface, but at a public beach, all
- 40:23Speaker 1: of that is out on display, so the surface is
- 40:25Speaker 1: all that matters, right, So I ran across this invention
- 40:29Speaker 1: that they came up with, at least in Australia, if
- 40:32Speaker 1: not in the in England as well. But they, um,
- 40:36Speaker 1: they had cabanas on the back of wagons that were
- 40:40Speaker 1: pulled by horses and you would get into the cabana
- 40:43Speaker 1: and the horse would draw the wagon with you in
- 40:46Speaker 1: the cabana in it out to the ocean and then
- 40:50Speaker 1: you would get out into the water so that nobody
- 40:53Speaker 1: else would see you in any kind of remote state
- 40:56Speaker 1: of undress. And we're still talking like wrists and ankle
- 41:00Speaker 1: is covered. Um, that was too much. So they would
- 41:04Speaker 1: get in these private cabanas and be drawn by horse
- 41:06Speaker 1: out to the water. Yes, that's a that was crazy.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And then fast forward to the nineteen fifties and there
- 41:14Speaker 1: was a nudist trend that sparked all over Australia, and
- 41:17Speaker 1: I think now Australia has something like, um, I think
- 41:21Speaker 1: five designated nude beaches, which I was surprised it was
- 41:25Speaker 1: that little, because in Britain there's eleven of them. Yeah,
- 41:30Speaker 1: I was surprised by that too. And there's a great
- 41:32Speaker 1: quote from this one counselor Brighton, who was, like, I guess,
- 41:36Speaker 1: the local elected official from back in nine when Brighton
- 41:40Speaker 1: became the first official nude beach, he said, I personally
- 41:44Speaker 1: have got no objection to people showing their breasts and
- 41:47Speaker 1: bosoms in general, genitalia to one another, jolly good luck
- 41:50Speaker 1: to them, but for heaven's sake, they should go somewhere
- 41:53Speaker 1: more private. And they had a great quote, Yeah maybe
- 41:58Speaker 1: that's where I lie. Is it really so you have
- 42:02Speaker 1: a problem with nude beaches. No, they're They're fine, just
- 42:05Speaker 1: not for me. Gotcha? What about the private, private, private
- 42:10Speaker 1: nude beach that I envisioned the island that you own,
- 42:15Speaker 1: I would visit it without you there, and I would
- 42:19Speaker 1: pull my shorts down for a minute, for sixty seconds, right,
- 42:24Speaker 1: but not past the ankle. You just stand there with
- 42:27Speaker 1: no no, no, I would still have my hands on them,
- 42:29Speaker 1: I see, and I'd be like, jokes on you, whole
- 42:33Speaker 1: islands under surveillance, jokes on you. It's a surprise party.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Well that's new beaches, man, unless you got anything else.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I got nothing else. Uh. If you want to know
- 42:45Speaker 1: more about nude beaches and you made it this far
- 42:48Speaker 1: through the episode, or what we could probably call a
- 42:50Speaker 1: psycho drama between me and Chuck. You can type that
- 42:54Speaker 1: word in the search bar at how Still Work dot
- 42:56Speaker 1: com and we'll bring up this fine article. And since
- 42:59Speaker 1: I said search bars, time for listener mail. I'm gonna
- 43:04Speaker 1: call this. We helped a dude get into medical school
- 43:08Speaker 1: and here goes Hey, guys, um. I started listening at
- 43:13Speaker 1: the beginning of middle school, although the moment I was
- 43:16Speaker 1: completely hooked was when I listened to the Delta Force episode.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Since then, I don't think I missed an episode for
- 43:20Speaker 1: nine year straight. Jumping back to present day, a few
- 43:24Speaker 1: weeks ago, ahead of medical school interview, one of the
- 43:27Speaker 1: interviewers asked me something to the effect of, how have
- 43:30Speaker 1: you cultured a spirit of continuous learning in your life
- 43:33Speaker 1: outside the classroom. One of the things I brought up
- 43:36Speaker 1: was stuff you should know in The interviewer who asked
- 43:38Speaker 1: the question was a fan. That shared connection at the
- 43:41Speaker 1: beginning of the interview really helped to break the ice
- 43:43Speaker 1: a bit, and the rest of the interview went really smoothly.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Just her back that I have been accepted. I guess
- 43:49Speaker 1: I can't say that our mutual love of S Y
- 43:52Speaker 1: s K was the reason I got in, but I
- 43:54Speaker 1: do think that having that connection helped me to relax
- 43:56Speaker 1: and nail the interview from that point on. So thanks
- 43:59Speaker 1: for helping break the US for me. H. Hearing back
- 44:02Speaker 1: from you guys would make my week. Uh, well, do
- 44:05Speaker 1: you want better? Isaac Lamb We read it on the air,
- 44:08Speaker 1: good luck in med school. Uh, he lives in Indianapolis
- 44:11Speaker 1: that he wants us to visit there for a tour,
- 44:14Speaker 1: and I think we're gonna try and hit up Indianapolis
- 44:16Speaker 1: at some point it's possible, and um, yeah, way to go, buddy. Yeah,
- 44:20Speaker 1: congratulations on getting into mid school. Isaac. Great name too.
- 44:24Speaker 1: By the way, I agreed. If you want to get
