- 0:00Speaker 1: A man is shot on Dodge City's Front Street, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Marshal Matt Dillon has reason to believe the intended target
- 0:06Speaker 1: may have been himself. This is Gunsmoke, Spring Term, Episode 456,
- 0:13Speaker 1: first heard on CBS Radio January 1st, 1961. A clue
- 0:19Speaker 1: carries Dillon and Chester toward an old Texas case where
- 0:23Speaker 1: a vigilante hanging left one survivor with a lasting grievance.
- 0:28Speaker 1: William Conrad stars with Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, and Howard McNear.
- 0:34Speaker 1: John Meston wrote this reuse of his June 13, 1953 script,
- 0:40Speaker 1: produced by Norman MacDonald. Now, back to the golden age
- 0:45Speaker 1: of radio.
- 0:46Speaker 2: ¶ ¶.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:00Speaker 3: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:03Speaker 3: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:05Speaker 3: gun smoke.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The End.
- 1:25Speaker 3: John Luke Ford, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:29Speaker 3: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:32Speaker 3: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I'm that man.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look
- 1:40Speaker 3: for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And a little lonely. You going out soon, Mr. Jones? Yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 2: it's a little early yet, Chester, and things seem quiet enough.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But why do you ask? Well, sir, I thought I
- 2:09Speaker 2: might rev your thoughts up a little bit when you go.
- 2:11Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Well, now, night wasn't made just for sleeping. That's what
- 2:16Speaker 4: my mommy used to tell us.
- 2:18Speaker 3: You know, Chester, I'll bet you a dollar to a dime.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It was your father who said that. My papa?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh, of course it was.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Did I say my mama? Well, I never meant that.
- 2:29Speaker 4: My goodness alive, no. She didn't even do nothing after
- 2:32Speaker 4: dark except reading the Bible.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And out loud. Did you know, Harm? Anyway, you've more
- 2:37Speaker 2: than made up for it.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Huh?
- 2:40Speaker 2: I ain't such a wild one as all I am.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I don't know, Chester.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Every now and then you've got a look in your
- 2:45Speaker 3: eye that's.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So trouble for some pretty girl. Now, that is pure oxygen.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Pure oxygen. That was close by. Come on.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Right in the feet, Jesse.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I see him. Nobody else around. Take a look
- 3:04Speaker 2: down the alley. Okay. Sure.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Dang.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Danny, your bat hurt. Shot me right in the back.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Must have been in the alley there. One of you
- 3:21Speaker 2: men go find Doc, huh? Any idea who it was, Danny? No.
- 3:26Speaker 2: None at all. I ain't got an enemy in the world. No, huh?
- 3:31Speaker 2: I know.
- 3:32Speaker 3: But has anybody, anybody at all said anything lately or
- 3:35Speaker 3: done anything that might have led to this?
- 3:37Speaker 2: No. No. Did you see him at all? No, sir.
- 3:42Speaker 2: But I did hear him say something about Stone, Marshal.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's all I heard. Stone. A man's name? Could be. Anyway,
- 3:53Speaker 2: that's all I heard.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 3:56Speaker 2: He thought I was somebody called Stone. I don't know. Well,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I don't know no Stone. Not around here, anyway.
- 4:03Speaker 3: No.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Were you, then? No, I don't. All right.
- 4:09Speaker 3: A couple of you men, get.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Him up to dock. Come on, Chester. Come on.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Dayton's such a nice, peaceable fellow. That's a dynamite chain,
- 4:31Speaker 4: that's what it is. You want some more coffee?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Um, yeah. Yeah, there you.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Go.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Melody's right, Chester. He got shot by mistake. How come
- 4:43Speaker 2: you're so sure? His hat, for one thing. Yeah, it's
- 4:48Speaker 2: the same shape and the same color as mine. Yeah?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Uh-huh. When Dane and I are built enough alike, we're
- 4:55Speaker 3: close enough in size that somebody could possibly make a mistake.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Especially at night.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, maybe, but that's treacherous. Don't ask me. Except for
- 5:05Speaker 2: one thing. I once knew a man named Stone. You
- 5:10Speaker 2: knew him? You mean he's dead? Mm-hmm. Well, but if
- 5:14Speaker 2: he's dead, then it couldn't have been him. Stone had
- 5:16Speaker 2: a friend called Danch. Might have been Danch. Why?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Now, they were both cow thieves down in Matagorda County,
- 5:24Speaker 3: it was. One day, Danch found his friend's stone hung
- 5:27Speaker 3: from a live oak tree. Now, I haven't seen Danch
- 5:31Speaker 3: since that event, but I've heard that he's often sworn
- 5:33Speaker 3: publicly that he's going to kill me for it.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Who? Did you? No, Chester.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Probably some cattleman caught him using a straight iron and
- 5:41Speaker 3: practiced a little quick justice. I wasn't even around.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I don't hang people. Anyway, if it was Danch, he's
- 5:48Speaker 2: probably still in Dodge. He'd have heard he shot the
- 5:51Speaker 2: wrong man soon enough. Were you going to look for him?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Better than letting him look for me. Especially seeing the
- 5:58Speaker 2: way he goes about it. Well, what's he look like?
- 6:01Speaker 2: In case I see him first. He's tall, son. He's
- 6:06Speaker 2: got one mark you can't miss. Maybe it's not on
- 6:09Speaker 2: his left side, anyway. What's that? He had a fight somewhere.
- 6:12Speaker 2: He got his ear chewed off.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Well, unless he's grown another, that ought to make him
- 6:17Speaker 4: easy enough to fight. I might wander around and see
- 6:20Speaker 4: if he's going out of the box. All right, Chester.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I'm going to make a round to the saloon. I'll
- 6:25Speaker 2: be at the long branch last. Okay, sir. You sure
- 6:43Speaker 2: you don't want a drink, man? No, not tonight, Kitty.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You must be expecting trouble. Maybe. Have you heard the
- 6:51Speaker 2: name Dance around here lately? Dance?
- 6:55Speaker 4: No, no, I haven't.
- 6:57Speaker 2: What's he look like? He's a tall man, missing an ear. Oh, yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I saw a fellow like that a couple of nights ago.
- 7:05Speaker 2: He's in here real late. Is that so? You haven't
- 7:08Speaker 2: seen him since?
- 7:09Speaker 3: No.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I could ask the other girl. Uh, Mr.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Dillon?
- 7:12Speaker 2: Oh, Miss Kitty. Hello, Chester. Uh, Mr. Dillon, you know
- 7:16Speaker 2: that cheap moving house at the edge of town in
- 7:18Speaker 2: what they call the Prairie Dog's Hole? Yeah, what about it?
- 7:21Speaker 4: Uh, Chester, I went to every other place, and then
- 7:24Speaker 4: I tried it just on a chance, and sure enough,
- 7:26Speaker 4: he was there.
- 7:27Speaker 2: You mean you saw him? No, he's gone. They said
- 7:30Speaker 2: he rode in after dark last night, and he left
- 7:32Speaker 2: for a dollar. He hasn't been back since. He took
- 7:34Speaker 2: me forward with him. Maybe it wasn't any of that
- 7:37Speaker 2: at all, huh? Maybe not, Chester. But I think I'll
- 7:40Speaker 2: keep sniffing the air just the same.
- 7:50Speaker 3: The next afternoon about sundown, Dane Shaw suddenly died. He
- 7:55Speaker 3: hadn't been badly hurt, but as Doc said, you never
- 7:58Speaker 3: know how a man's heart will react. Anyway, Dane, a
- 8:02Speaker 3: man without an enemy in the world, was dead. Murdered.
- 8:06Speaker 2: And a place of me.
- 8:07Speaker 3: That night I was walking down Front Street thinking about
- 8:11Speaker 3: it and wondering why it's the innocent that so often
- 8:14Speaker 3: get hurt when.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Well, at.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Once I had a feeling I was being followed. I
- 8:20Speaker 3: walked on until I reached an alley and then I
- 8:22Speaker 3: turned into it casually. Once out of sight, I ran
- 8:25Speaker 3: halfway down it and ducked behind a rain barrel and waited.
- 8:28Speaker 2: A few seconds later, I knew I'd been right. Don't
- 8:42Speaker 2: kill me. Don't kill me, Michael. Well, that depends on you, Mr. Now,
- 8:46Speaker 2: get up. You got my gun. I went on. You
- 8:49Speaker 2: went off when you jumped me, that's all.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Shut up and turn around.
- 8:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:57Speaker 3: That hill's right around the corner. Walk ahead of me
- 8:59Speaker 3: and walk careful.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I will. Sure, I will. That's it. Now open the
- 9:14Speaker 2: door and go right on in. Sure, Marshal. Well, I
- 9:18Speaker 2: can't believe it, Mr. Phillips. I don't know. Who are you, mister?
- 9:22Speaker 2: My name is Lee. Lee what? Bill Lee. All right, Lee,
- 9:26Speaker 2: now when did you follow me down that alley with
- 9:28Speaker 2: a gun in your hand? I wasn't following you, Marshal. Oh,
- 9:31Speaker 2: what were you doing? Well, I was just.
- 9:34Speaker 3: It was.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Dark down there and I didn't want to take any chances.
- 9:37Speaker 2: All right, Lee.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Did you shoot Dane Shaw last night?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Are you... Look here, Marshal, you can't drag me in
- 9:43Speaker 2: here and accuse me of... Shut up.
- 9:45Speaker 3: All I want out of you is one thing, to
- 9:47Speaker 3: dance hair you to kill me.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You got nothing on me, Marshal. I never heard of
- 9:52Speaker 2: no dance. All right, lock him up, Chester. Lock me up?
- 9:56Speaker 2: What for? A lion. Now, wait a minute. I shall
- 9:59Speaker 2: eat it. Sure.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Is. No, I'm... You can't put me in jail. You
- 10:03Speaker 3: show him what we can do, Chester. All right, sir.
- 10:06Speaker 2: All right, mister. Right through that door. Door? I see
- 10:10Speaker 2: you tried for this, Marshal. I know my right.
- 10:13Speaker 3: The only right you've got left is to be hung,
- 10:15Speaker 3: and I hope it takes place real soon. Every morning,
- 10:26Speaker 3: Chester brought Lee out of his cell and I questioned him,
- 10:29Speaker 3: but he admitted nothing day after day. We kept him
- 10:32Speaker 3: in jail anyway and I hoped Danch should hear.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Of it and come into town to do the job himself.
- 10:37Speaker 3: But it isn't a good feeling to walk down the
- 10:38Speaker 3: street and know that any minute you might get shot
- 10:40Speaker 3: in the back.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Finally, I got tired of it. I wanted to know
- 10:44Speaker 2: where Danch was. You're wasting your time, Marshal.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Look, for the last time, are you going to tell
- 10:49Speaker 3: me where Danch is? I've told you a hundred times,
- 10:51Speaker 3: I don't know Danch.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Why do you make his deal with him?
- 10:54Speaker 4: I don't know nothing about no deal.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I'm an innocent man, Marshal, and as soon as I
- 10:58Speaker 3: get out of here, I'm going to write the government
- 11:00Speaker 3: about it. Tell me, Lee, how does it feel to
- 11:02Speaker 3: kill a man for money?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Oh, don't you look at me, Marshal.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Nobody's paid me nothing. Well, what about you? You get
- 11:08Speaker 3: paid for shooting people... You get paid regular for it.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Me?
- 11:12Speaker 4: I think I'll hit you right on the head and
- 11:14Speaker 4: drag you back to your cell like this.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Sure, sure. I'm not... Wait a minute, Chester. Let him be. No,
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think that's an obviously key boy. I know, but
- 11:21Speaker 2: I got a better idea of what to do with him. What?
- 11:24Speaker 3: I'm not getting anywhere this way. Lee just isn't going
- 11:26Speaker 3: to tell us anything. He's got his mind made up.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I don't know anything, I told you.
- 11:30Speaker 3: So keeping him locked up isn't going to help turn
- 11:32Speaker 3: him loose.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Now?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it's about time. You can't do that. He'll
- 11:37Speaker 2: just try to kill you again for a chance again.
- 11:39Speaker 2: All right, go on, Lee. You're free. Get out of here.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You really mean it, Marshal? You heard me. There's your gun.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Take it. Don't pick it up by the button. Oh,
- 11:52Speaker 2: I wouldn't try nothing, Marshal. If you die, if you're dead,
- 11:55Speaker 2: you're not fast enough to kill me face to face. No,
- 11:58Speaker 2: and I wouldn't try. Goodbye, Marshal Chester. I'm leaving. I'm
- 12:04Speaker 2: taking the next train to Abilene. I'll leave.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Just one thing.
- 12:11Speaker 3: What?
- 12:12Speaker 2: You said I get paid for shooting people. Oh, no, Marshal,
- 12:16Speaker 2: I didn't mean nothing. No, in a way, you're right.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Sometimes I have to when there's no other way out.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But I won't get paid for shooting you. What? No,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I figure killing you will.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Be part pleasure and part self-defense.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Well, what are you talking about, Marshal? Just that.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Yeah, but why do you want to shoot me? I
- 12:33Speaker 3: don't like men of your kind. Well, Marshal, you can't...
- 12:37Speaker 3: I can't let you get any farther than that boardwalk.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'd be a fool if I did. Now, you go
- 12:42Speaker 2: on out the door, Lee, and I'm coming right after you. No, no.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I'll feel a lot safer with you dead. Go on, now. No,
- 12:48Speaker 2: I'm staying right here. I'll kill you right here. You're armed? No.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'll give you my gun.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I'll touch it.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Don't kill me, Marshal. Don't kill me. I'll tell you.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I'll tell you anything you want. Too late. You'll probably
- 13:01Speaker 2: lie anyway. Oh, no. No, Marshal. No, I won't. You
- 13:03Speaker 2: listen to me.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Gant is down the Santa Fe Trail about 75 miles
- 13:08Speaker 3: across the Cimarron, a place called Wagon Bed Springs.
- 13:11Speaker 2: He is. He's waiting there for me. He waiting to
- 13:13Speaker 2: pay me. When I.
- 13:15Speaker 3: When you kill me, is that right?
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm not going to kill you, Marshal. No, I.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Take his gun, Chester, before he changes his mind. He's
- 13:21Speaker 3: a pretty brave man.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Sure, sure. Take it. There he is, Mr. Jones. I
- 13:27Speaker 2: told you. Now let me go now.
- 13:29Speaker 3: You know, Darge isn't going to like you having killed
- 13:31Speaker 3: the wrong man and me still walking around in good health, Lee.
- 13:34Speaker 3: And the law wouldn't like it if I turned a
- 13:36Speaker 3: murderer loose. Lock him up, Chester, and then.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Get the horses.
- 13:41Speaker 3: You know the way, Lee. Wagon Bed Springs boasted a
- 13:54Speaker 3: hotel with a half a dozen rooms, a restaurant, and
- 13:57Speaker 3: two saloons all built out of adobe. It was just
- 14:01Speaker 3: a stopping point for bullwackers and mule skinners driving their
- 14:04Speaker 3: freight wagons along the Santa Fe Trail. When night came,
- 14:08Speaker 3: Chester and I rode in on the corral for our
- 14:11Speaker 3: horses and scouted the town. Dance wasn't anywhere in sight,
- 14:15Speaker 3: so I decided to begin asking questions.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we're supposed to meet a friend here. I have,
- 14:24Speaker 2: but can't find him. If he's in Wagon Bay Springs,
- 14:28Speaker 2: you can find him. This ain't a big town like
- 14:41Speaker 2: Dodge and Embley. I wish it was. You know, I'd
- 14:45Speaker 2: like to see Dodge sometime. That's where my.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Friend may have gone, but maybe you saw him when
- 14:50Speaker 3: he passed through here.
- 14:51Speaker 2: A tall man, one ear.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Oh?
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, calls himself Danch. Well, sure, I know him. He
- 14:57Speaker 2: was here quite a while.
- 14:58Speaker 3: But he left just yesterday.
- 15:02Speaker 2: He's gone to Texas. He should not have died. That so?
- 15:05Speaker 2: He tell you that? Well, that's what he said when
- 15:07Speaker 2: he left. All right, thanks. Sure. You staying here long?
- 15:12Speaker 3: No, not long.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Here's for the beer. We'll be back soon.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Good.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Say, did you move in there, Mr.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Miller?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Are we really going to eat pepper again?
- 15:29Speaker 3: Just to that barkeep said he'd never seen Dodge. He
- 15:32Speaker 3: was there last fall. I remember his face. If he
- 15:35Speaker 3: was in Dodge, he knows who I am. Banch is
- 15:38Speaker 3: here somewhere, and that barkeep's going to get word to
- 15:40Speaker 3: him mighty fast.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Now, come on. Let's get across the street. Where are
- 15:43Speaker 2: we going?
- 15:44Speaker 3: We'll follow him when he goes to tell Banch I'm here.
- 15:48Speaker 3: He'll leave it so that he thinks we're in a restaurant.
- 15:52Speaker 2: He won't see us here. Can I go with you?
- 15:56Speaker 2: If you stay out of the way. I will.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I figured it right. And in a few minutes, the
- 16:11Speaker 3: barkeep came out onto the street and walked down toward
- 16:13Speaker 3: the edge of town.
- 16:15Speaker 2: We followed some distance.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Behind until he reached a small doby hut.
- 16:19Speaker 2: There he knocked and then disappeared inside.
- 16:22Speaker 3: The hut had no windows, we could see, but I
- 16:24Speaker 3: sent Chester around back to make sure.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He returned in a moment and I told him to
- 16:29Speaker 2: wait while I went up to the door. Who is it?
- 16:35Speaker 2: You're trapped, Dash. Come out with your hands up. I
- 16:39Speaker 2: didn't mean to say that, so I ought to. You've
- 16:42Speaker 2: got nothing to do with it. I'm getting out of here. Marshall,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I'm coming out. I ain't doing all right, so don't shoot. Okay,
- 16:55Speaker 2: come on. Get up. Get up. A bit more than that.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I can't get out. All right, keep your hands up. Sure, sure.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I'll take him. Keep an eye on him. Come on, you.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I won't do anything. He paid me to warn him,
- 17:13Speaker 2: that's all.
- 17:13Speaker 3: You're in a bad spot, Dad.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You can rot in there.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I don't suppose you'd give me a fighting chance anymore
- 17:21Speaker 3: than you did Stone, Wong.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I was in.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Galveston when Stone got hung down.
- 17:25Speaker 2: That's a lie. That doesn't matter.
- 17:26Speaker 3: How come you hired Lee to shoot me? You lost
- 17:29Speaker 3: your nerve?
- 17:30Speaker 4: Too many settlement in Dallas is why.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I forgot your reputation with cows.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And I don't care how you die anyway.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You talk big for a man who's practically buried.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I'm coming out, Simmons. I found out with a gun.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Don't do it, Danch.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I'll have to kill you.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I hang anyways, and I just might get you. I
- 17:53Speaker 2: backed off around the corner of the hut and waited.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Danch opened the door wide, and.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Then suddenly he sprang out, a gun.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Ready in each hand, expecting to face me.
- 18:03Speaker 3: He stood there for a second before he realized he'd
