- 0:00Speaker 1: You've heard me say on the program quite often when
- 0:03we have the opposing Kings played by play voice join
- 0:06us for a few minutes. So and so is someone
- 0:08I've known a long time or friends a long time.
- 0:10If from the department of true confessions, I don't believe
- 0:13that Scott Howard and I have ever had a chance
- 0:15to physically face to face meet, and that even includes
- 0:19with the Sugar Bowl because we were also swamped a
- 0:21few years ago. So with that, I welcome the play
- 0:24by play voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, Scott Howard to
- 0:27the program.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Scott, I really appreciate the time.
- 0:28Speaker 3: How are you today, Hey, Craig, I'm doing well, And
- 0:33that is one hundred percent correct.
- 0:35Speaker 4: We have never met faith to face.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I just I was sitting there thinking maybe basketball a
- 0:40fewyears it now I don't think so, and so I
- 0:42was trying to remember about that. But I'm really I'm
- 0:44really grateful to you for coming on for a few minutes.
- 0:47The first thing I want to ask is something whenever
- 0:50I'm on with somebody else that they always ask about
- 0:54the health of the Longhorn football team. And they've got
- 0:56some guys banged up and they're hoping to have Isaiah
- 0:59Bond back this week. They they know that they have
- 1:03lost Derek Williams for the season the injury. We heard
- 1:05that from Sark and they've got some other guys Banker,
- 1:07but I know that in some cases, Kirby Sparts team's
- 1:11got a little bit of a mash unit thing going on,
- 1:13don't they right now with the injuries.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's been a lot to handle through the
- 1:18first six games. You know, they're their running back room
- 1:22is is down two guys now. Roderick Robinson hasn't played
- 1:27at all this season. He had toe surgery in August
- 1:30during training camp, so he he never even made it
- 1:33to the first game.
- 1:34Speaker 4: And he hasn't come back yet. Uh.
- 1:36Speaker 3: And then last week against Mississippi State, Branson Robinson suffered
- 1:42another knee injury. He's got an m c L problem.
- 1:46I'm not sure if it was a tear or a
- 1:48sprain or what. But he's going to be out this week.
- 1:51So he's back off the shelf again. And Uh, Georgia
- 1:55and the and the running backs are just down to
- 1:58trevorytn Answer from Florida, who's missed the first game of
- 2:03the year. He was quietly suspended I guess if you
- 2:06want to call it that way. It was never announced
- 2:08as such, but he had gotten into some off the
- 2:11field trouble prior to the season and did not play
- 2:15against Clemson in the opener. And after that, it's Cash Jones,
- 2:21a walk on from Brock Texas, and two freshmen, well
- 2:27really three freshmen and one who's only played any significant
- 2:30amount of snaps, and that's Nate Frasier.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So the running back room is.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Is banged up, as is the offensive line. We're down
- 2:38the center and a starting guard who is also the
- 2:41backup center or was working to be, and so we're playing,
- 2:46you know, technically our number three guy at center right
- 2:49now and a backup guard. So most of the injuries
- 2:52have taken place on offense too. There is one linebacker
- 2:55that's out on defense, Smile Munden, who's a significant loss
- 3:00as he is one of Georgia's leading tacklers and most
- 3:03experienced players.
- 3:04Speaker 4: So yes, they are. They're kind of a walking mash
- 3:07unit right now. They're really banged up.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Wow. Uh so uh.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The The one other thing I was going to ask
- 3:14about is when when there is a veteran football team,
- 3:17even when guys get banged up and they're they're there
- 3:20to help, I guess, kind of nurture and help the
- 3:22younger guys grow a little bit.
- 3:24Speaker 2: That sort of thing when.
- 3:25Speaker 1: When you go through some early season h bumps, and
- 3:28there was the tight game at Kentucky, then obviously the
- 3:30Los Alabama and then bounce back with the win.
- 3:33Speaker 2: How much do you see?
- 3:35Speaker 1: I was impressed with what the Kirby Smart said in
- 3:39his press conference about how, you know, his guys know
- 3:41what they're supposed to do and and and we all
- 3:44kind of there's an expectation of us getting everybody through
- 3:49the difficult moments, injuries notwithstanding. So you kind of noticed
- 3:53that with guys, not just Carson back obviously, but uh,
- 3:56you know some of the other veterans on both the
- 3:58offensive and dece eventsive side of the ball, having that
- 4:00really take ownership when times are a little bit bumpy.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Uh yeah, for the most part, you know, And and
- 4:08the guys filling those those spots right now are are
- 4:12not necessarily veterans on the offensive line. Michael Morris has
- 4:17played a lot of snaps and he's the guy who's
- 4:18playing it right guard now in plays of Tate Ratleige,
- 4:21and you know he's he's one of those players that
- 4:23has rotated in the offensive line over the last couple
- 4:26of years, so he's he's not a newbie.
- 4:28Speaker 4: But some of the other.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Guys that are having to to to get some snaps
- 4:34haven't necessarily played a lot. And and that certainly applies
- 4:38on defense to to the linebacking spot. With Smile Mondon
- 4:41out Georgia's last week, I think Chris Cole, who's a
- 4:46true freshman, got the most snaps he has all season
- 4:50in the game against Mississippi State. And Raylan Wilson is
- 4:54another guy that's having to get snaps, and he's a sophomore, uh,
- 4:59you know, and he's probably playing a little bit sooner
- 5:01than than and a little bit more than maybe the
- 5:04coaching staff would have preferred. But so it's not necessarily
- 5:09all the veterans picking up the slack, you know.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Some of these younger guys are having to come in.
- 5:13Speaker 3: There and and thrown in the trial, thrown in the
- 5:17fire by trial. So it's a it's a nice mixture
- 5:22if you've got depth. Kirby's been complaining a lot about
- 5:26the depth lately just because of all the injuries, because
- 5:28that affects your depth and young guys may not necessarily
- 5:32be ready to go, but you know, that's that's the
- 5:35sport we live in, and that's why you have I
- 5:37don't know, one hundred and twenty guys or whatever it
- 5:39is with all the walk ons on your roster, so
- 5:42you can kind of pick and choose and get guys ready.
- 5:45Speaker 2: You know, I found it fascinating.
- 5:46Speaker 1: A couple of things that Kirby mentioned in the news
- 5:48conference with regard to he was asked about the portal
- 5:51quite a bit, and I thought it was good where
- 5:55he said, we're not really worrying about comparing ourselves on
- 5:58how the portal is affects us and availability and rosters.
- 6:02Then he said it's all over college football clearly and
- 6:06how teams, how teams respond to that. And I guess
- 6:09what it comes down to, Scott, It doesn't. It is
- 6:11is the guys. If you're going to dip into the portal,
- 6:15and most do unless your name is Dabos Swinny. But
- 6:18most guys who dip into Coaches who get into the
- 6:21portal are going to bring in guys that they want
- 6:25and hope provide pretty quick results. We always say that,
- 6:29I know you do with basketball, you expect the Juco
- 6:31transfer coming in to be able to contribute right away
- 6:34or something or transfer from another place.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And that's part of the key, isn't it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The guys that you're bringing in if you're working the
- 6:40portal to make sure they can give you contributions because
- 6:44of the nature of the game and guys getting hurt.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, And the thing with the portal is,
- 6:50you know, in a lot of cases, I mean, you're
- 6:53getting somebody else's back ups. I mean, that's why, that's
- 6:55one reason why they're leaving. And whether they can come
- 6:59to your place and establish a starting role or or
- 7:04be featured a lot more than they were at their
- 7:06previous stop.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's up in the.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Air, and you know a lot of that is up
- 7:11to the player. I mean, how how much work do
- 7:12you want to put into that? You know, Georgia has
- 7:16gone into the portal not a not a great deal.
- 7:20But you know when they when they do look for
- 7:23guys in the transfer portal, they are looking for immedia contributions.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I mean, why else would you go in there?
- 7:29Speaker 3: And and that's why a handful of George's receiving corps
- 7:35is out of the portal. London Humphreys from from Vanderbilt,
- 7:39kolbe Young who's right from Miami and right now he's
- 7:43on an indefinite suspension so he's not available to play either.
- 7:48You know, they got Michael Jackson from from usc and
- 7:51you know, a couple of years ago Dominic Lovett from Missouri.
- 7:54So you know, when George has gone into the portal,
- 7:58it seems and I haven't done all the research, but
- 8:00it seems like they're going for immediate skill guys that
- 8:03can kind of help the cause, and most of that
- 8:06has been in the wide receiving area, you know. And
- 8:10Etn is another transfer from Florida, so the running back.
- 8:14But you know, Kirby's philosophy is largely to develop to
- 8:20recruit high school guys and develop those into what they
- 8:25want here and not use the portal too much. But
- 8:28you know, it's there, it's available, everybody does it, and
- 8:31George is going to use it when necessary.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Scott Howard, play by play, voice of the Georgia Bulldog,
- 8:35joining us for a few more minutes here on sports
- 8:37Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Scott, how would you.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Describe the season so far for Carson back? I mean
- 8:43sixty eight percent the completion percentage already over eighteen hundred
- 8:46yards and fifteen touchdowns. He's averaging over three hundred yards
- 8:49per game passing. How would you describe this season for
- 8:53back at quarterback?
- 8:56Speaker 3: I would say pretty tholid. I wouldn't say exceptional at
- 8:59this point. I mean he's thrown some interceptions. Some of
- 9:04those picks are on tipped ball, tipped passes. You know,
- 9:08that's that's just kind of unfortunate. A lot of times
- 9:11for quarterbacks. It may have been a good throw, but
- 9:14you know, a defensive defensive player got his hand on
- 9:17the ball, either at the line of scrimmage or at
- 9:20the end of the pass play. But you know he
- 9:24had his His yardage numbers are pretty good, but a
- 9:29lot of that is a direct result of Georgia's offense,
- 9:33which is you know, right now, I don't I don't
- 9:36think it's comparable to what they've had the previous two years,
- 9:40at least from a statistical standpoint. And when we talked
- 9:44about the injuries they've had, and that's that's affected the
- 9:47flow and especially on the offensive line. I mean, Carson's good,
- 9:50he's a he's a very good quarterback. You know, as
- 9:54far as the the All American and the number one
- 9:58draft pick. All that talk we've heard, you know, for
- 10:02months and months leading up to the season. I don't
- 10:04know that we're seeing that right now. There's a lot
- 10:07more season to go, and it could still get to
- 10:09that point. But I mean, he's a veteran guy, extremely smart.
- 10:13He knows George's offense very well, you know, and I'm
- 10:17sure he's hoping he can play a little bit better,
- 10:21a little more sound football, as well as the guys
- 10:24around him. I mean, it's a team concept. It's not
- 10:27just the one guy out there. So hopefully, if Georgia's
- 10:29offense can play a lot better, Carson does as well.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm curious to get your thoughts on this phenomenon.
- 10:36The obviously, the Red River rivalry around here is such
- 10:39a huge game, the Texas Oklahoma game, and there's such
- 10:43rivalry stuff that goes into it, such emotion and everything.
- 10:47And so Texas goes up there and they play well,
- 10:49especially on defense, play really really well, and when the
- 10:52game and the fan reaction kind of, hey it's great
- 10:55we beat to Oh my gosh, here comes Georgia. I mean,
- 10:58and I was that kind of thing, is it? I
- 11:00don't know, maybe because there's been a little more separation.
- 11:03Does it seem odd to Bulldog fans? You had that
- 11:06massive early season game with Alabama and then you have
- 11:11to go on the road to play what at least
- 11:13is ranked, for what it's worth, the number one team
- 11:15in the country right now. What's been the response of
- 11:18Bulldog fans? Is it one of curiosity? Since Georgia hasn't
- 11:21been in Austin in a great many years.
- 11:25Speaker 4: There may be some of that.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure the Georgia fans that are planning to
- 11:30go on this trip are very excited. They love going
- 11:33to new low castles, you know, and they've really traveled
- 11:39well the last decade or so, and certainly since Georgia's
- 11:42had the success it's had under Kirby Smart.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I mean, Georgia travels very well. You know. Several years
- 11:48ago we had the first.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Ever trip to Notre Dame and that turned out to
- 11:53be just a great event for Georgia fans. I mean,
- 11:57I don't know that you know, there was a story
- 12:00of twenty to twenty five thousand Georgia fans got into
- 12:03that game at Notre Dame Stadium, so you know, it
- 12:06was a little bit of a bulldog takeover.
- 12:08Speaker 4: As they liked to brag about. And you know, fans.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Turned it into a trip to Chicago and watched the
- 12:14I think the Braves were playing the Cubs that weekend,
- 12:16and coincidentally, the Falcons may have even been playing the
- 12:20Bears that same weekend. So it was I mean, it
- 12:23was the perfect storm if you were you know, from
- 12:26this state as far as sports is concerned.
- 12:28Speaker 4: So you know, it's similar to.
- 12:30Speaker 3: That for this weekend for Georgia fans. They're excited to
- 12:34be going to Texas to face the number one team.
- 12:37You know, that's been that's been circled on the calendar
- 12:40for a long time. When the schedule came out and
- 12:43Georgia fans saw we go to Alabama, we go to Texas,
- 12:46we go to Ole Miss. You know at the start
- 12:49of the season, three top five teams, I mean, jaws
- 12:52dropped open. Holy smokes, what's the SEC doing to us?
- 12:56But you know that's that that the schedule, that's the
- 13:01cards you've been dealt. So you know, the fan base
- 13:04is enjoying that that kind of competition. They like those
- 13:09games a lot better, I can tell you than UMass
- 13:13coming to your place in November, I assure you the
- 13:16Georgia Texas game is gonna be a lot more fun,
- 13:19a lot more eyeballs, regardless of the outcome, you know,
- 13:24than a D two team or a one double A
- 13:28or SCS or whatever they're calling it these days coming
- 13:31to your place late in the year, no doubt about.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And like the Notre Dame weekend.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Hey, if fans Georgia fans coming in are holding tickets
- 13:37to the Formula One race on Sunday, they can go
- 13:40out to the fot This town is good, just gonna
- 13:42be lit because of all of that stuff.
- 13:44Speaker 2: My only thought was, I hope they were able.
- 13:45Speaker 1: To find hotel rooms because I'm hearing the price gallaging
- 13:49was in overdrive this week from the Greater Austin area hotels.
- 13:52Folks staying as far away as Houston one hundred and
- 13:54sixty miles away, Dallas two hundred miles away, San Antonio.
- 13:58What few rooms were available miles away? All that kind
- 14:01of stuff, So hopefully they get to have a have
- 14:05a good time on list. What's been your take final
- 14:08thing here on what you feel the Bulldogs need to
- 14:11do as much as anything else to to come out
- 14:14of this game with a win for Georgia on Saturday night.
- 14:19Speaker 3: We'll clean up a lot of their mistake you know,
- 14:20clean up the turnovers, obviously penalties. I mean, george is
- 14:24one of the most penalized teams in the league. Last
- 14:27week against Mississippi State, I mean, we had a couple
- 14:31of key third down drives where we you know, committed
- 14:34a pass interference or had a defensive holding or something
- 14:38that kept them going on third and long. And you know,
- 14:41eventually you do that too many times, I mean you're
- 14:44going to break on defense, and that kind of happened
- 14:47to Georgia against Mississippi State, giving up thirty one points.
- 14:51Speaker 4: To those guys last week.
- 14:52Speaker 3: So things like that that they can clean up, they
- 14:55can straighten up. And you know, from a strategic endpoint,
- 15:00I mean, Georgia hasn't been running the ball like it
- 15:04is known for. They've got i think the third fewest
- 15:08rushing attempts in the SEC so far this season. That's
- 15:12a that's a little bit of an oddity. They've you know,
- 15:16relied on the passing game and the strength of that
- 15:18with Carson Beck and the receivers that he's got, so
- 15:22you know, it's more the same for that I don't
- 15:24think there's gonna be a lot of surprises. Is just
- 15:26trying to cut down on your mistake, uh and and
- 15:30clean up some of those errors that they've that they've
- 15:32had in the first six games.
- 15:34Speaker 1: It's Scott Hour, the play by play voice of the
- 15:36Georgia Bulldogs, and great to visit with you. I really
- 15:39appreciate the time. Listen, we will meet face to face
- 15:42on Saturday. I can promise you that in the in
- 15:44the in the press, pox, I'll look forward to seeking
- 15:47you out on Saturday. I hope you have safe travels
- 15:49in here, and I hope you enjoy the weekend. And again,
- 15:52I thank you for taking a few minutes to join
- 15:54us on the program this afternoon.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Thank you, Craig. I appreciate it, and we will definitely
- 15:59see you on Saturday. You bet.
- 16:00Speaker 1: That's Scott Howard, play by play voice of the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 16:04Up next, we bring you this Today's this Afternoon's edition
