- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are the
- 0:22Speaker 1: most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the Hunt
- 0:26Speaker 1: app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor where
- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on X Spencer, What was the point?
- 0:36Speaker 1: You're just making a lot of like books legally allow
- 0:42Speaker 1: you to shoot a male turkey based on the appearance,
- 0:45Speaker 1: with children's books like regulation books, yes, as we call
- 0:51Speaker 1: him Spencer allow you to fill a male turkey tag
- 0:55Speaker 1: based on the presence of a beard or spurs either
- 0:59Speaker 1: or Yeah. So what I'm saying is, can you imagine
- 1:03Speaker 1: like being out in the woods and have a turkey
- 1:05Speaker 1: combined like no beard, no fan, not that that's like
- 1:09Speaker 1: an indication, but not a legal one. But then because
- 1:13Speaker 1: there are times with no spurs and the times and
- 1:16Speaker 1: no beards. Yeah, so I I can't imagine a scenario
- 1:19Speaker 1: where you'd be like shooting him off the spurs. There
- 1:21Speaker 1: it is spurs legal bird. The reason I made you
- 1:25Speaker 1: remake that point is we're just talking to this feller
- 1:30Speaker 1: about hunting oscillated turkeys. So for you knuckle heads at home,
- 1:39Speaker 1: all that there are. We've covered this a bi zillion times.
- 1:44Speaker 1: The regular old American wild turkey. There's five sort of
- 1:48Speaker 1: like you know, there's five what some people like to
- 1:51Speaker 1: call subspecies of the regular old American wild turkey. Rattle
- 1:55Speaker 1: him off, yohnnie. Uh. Starting down in the southwest the
- 2:00Speaker 1: Wolds turkey. Moving over to the southeast and most of
- 2:03Speaker 1: the eastern part of the country you have the Eastern
- 2:06Speaker 1: but down in the southeast tip of or southern I
- 2:09Speaker 1: guess end of Florida you have the Osceola and then
- 2:12Speaker 1: in the central part and into the mountains we have
- 2:15Speaker 1: the Rio Grand turkeys and the Merriam's turkeys. Man, it
- 2:19Speaker 1: was a great, great job. I like that little thing
- 2:22Speaker 1: where you uh skipped over a bunch of the country
- 2:25Speaker 1: then doubled back. You went like west to east and
- 2:29Speaker 1: then doubled back. Well, I started, but I went south
- 2:31Speaker 1: and stayed in the south, oh yeah, and then came
- 2:34Speaker 1: up the east the counter you're starting in the south
- 2:38Speaker 1: south going counterclockwise. I like it. Uh. Anyways, there's a thing.
- 2:44Speaker 1: There's another whole other species of turkey, which is kind
- 2:47Speaker 1: of like a turkey and a peacock had sex the
- 2:50Speaker 1: oscillated turkey, which lives in yucatan Um areas of Central America, Guatemala.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I think they got him in U does Belize, Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I think people hun him in Belize oscillated turkeys. Anyways,
- 3:07Speaker 1: dude was telling me there's two ways. Like the oscillatord
- 3:09Speaker 1: turkey lives out in the jungle, low jungle, not like
- 3:12Speaker 1: high canopy monkey jungle, but low jungle. And a lot
- 3:18Speaker 1: of times people go down and hunt him in the fields.
- 3:20Speaker 1: They just like slash and burn egg. And people like
- 3:22Speaker 1: the oscillated turkeys in the fields. The reason he was
- 3:24Speaker 1: telling me they like the oscillated turkeys in the fields,
- 3:27Speaker 1: it's because you can see their footwear because these things
- 3:33Speaker 1: have some obscene spurs. Footwear meaning you want to see
- 3:38Speaker 1: how a giant in their spurs. And if he's out
- 3:40Speaker 1: in the field, you can actually judge them. You can
- 3:44Speaker 1: judge trophy, judge them. Real limb hangers. Yeah, you can
- 3:47Speaker 1: see if he's got limb hangers or not. Well, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: think every single one of those buggers has limb hangers.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Some of them just like wrap around the limb. Uh too,
- 3:57Speaker 1: so far there could be more. So far who have
- 4:00Speaker 1: the guess who've been on this show. Jim Halflfinger and
- 4:04Speaker 1: Tommy Edson have overcome the dreaded COVID nineteen that got
- 4:13Speaker 1: me thinking, have been afflicted and persevered. Tommy Edson said
- 4:17Speaker 1: it was the second sick as he's ever been, so
- 4:19Speaker 1: I promptly called him to ask him about what the
- 4:20Speaker 1: first was. But uh, helfle Finger, he barely knew he
- 4:24Speaker 1: was sick, but got sick, and that got be wondering,
- 4:27Speaker 1: is it like is being on this show? And like
- 4:32Speaker 1: so E should do some math. Is there a higher
- 4:36Speaker 1: likelihood that higher than national higher? You know what I'm
- 4:39Speaker 1: trying to say? Does it does being on the show?
- 4:41Speaker 1: I mean that there's a higher likelihood that you get
- 4:43Speaker 1: COVID nineteen you're in a high risk group, or or
- 4:48Speaker 1: does it match the general the population in general? Like
- 4:52Speaker 1: what percent of Americans? Do we have a representative sample?
- 4:56Speaker 1: That's what I'm trying to get at. I Um, I
- 4:59Speaker 1: want it, man, I just want to get it over with. Well,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I mean you very well good already had it. That's
- 5:05Speaker 1: what happened to him. He went down and took Jim
- 5:07Speaker 1: Heffelfinger went Tommy edn't just got sick of ship, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: he found out he had because he got the test.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Heffelfinger was just curious if he'd had it, got the
- 5:15Speaker 1: thing and realized he'd had it a long time ago.
- 5:17Speaker 1: My wife got real mad when I said I'd volunteer
- 5:20Speaker 1: to get it. Yeah. I got a friend. I don't
- 5:23Speaker 1: want to say who, one of the individuals that I'm
- 5:26Speaker 1: talking about right here. I was saying that in his view,
- 5:31Speaker 1: if it wasn't for the risk of overwhelming the healthcare system,
- 5:33Speaker 1: he says, I think we should all be licking door knobbs.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But he says he's been very protective of his mother
- 5:39Speaker 1: because she's older and he wants her to hold up.
- 5:42Speaker 1: But he said she's got a bunch of coupons burning
- 5:44Speaker 1: a hole in her pocket. He wants to get down
- 5:47Speaker 1: to the start with your cupons before the EXPIRER. Oh
- 5:51Speaker 1: my gosh. I want it, though I mean I don't want.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm not trying to be more, but I just want
- 5:55Speaker 1: to Like, no, I want to get it and no.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I was speaking with a friend of mine, Yes your day,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and um coworker of his, uh has the antibody has
- 6:07Speaker 1: had it? Has been uh in you know in quarantine
- 6:12Speaker 1: with her family, young children, and nobody else in her
- 6:16Speaker 1: family got it. I bet they got it, but it
- 6:18Speaker 1: didn't show the same thing with Tommy, Like no, but
- 6:21Speaker 1: they didn't show antibodies or oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and she just floats around in the air for like
- 6:28Speaker 1: nine months. Man, I think it gets Obviously we wouldn't
- 6:33Speaker 1: quite have this thing nailed down. You know what, if
- 6:38Speaker 1: you're gonna end up being one of those guys that
- 6:40Speaker 1: we heard about in Turkey Camp last week that it
- 6:45Speaker 1: in the dirt, well, not only that, but it's six
- 6:47Speaker 1: three months later, he's still you know, suffering and lungs
- 6:51Speaker 1: aren't feeling too good. That's a that's a risk. I'm
- 6:54Speaker 1: just saying, Okay, I'm gonna trying. I want to like
- 6:59Speaker 1: put some brackets around what I'm saying. I don't want
- 7:03Speaker 1: to then become I don't want to then infect people
- 7:05Speaker 1: who don't want to be infected all this. If I could,
- 7:08Speaker 1: if I could go to my fist, here's the thing.
- 7:10Speaker 1: If I could go to my fish shack with a
- 7:13Speaker 1: little vial of spit from Tommy Edson spit and from
- 7:19Speaker 1: then right, I'd go to my fish shack by myself,
- 7:22Speaker 1: drink Tommy Edson spit and then wait till I have whatever,
- 7:27Speaker 1: wait for two weeks and go home. I would do
- 7:29Speaker 1: it just just to know. I even have like in
- 7:34Speaker 1: my notes, I have a thing like when I envisioned
- 7:36Speaker 1: me and like it. You know, that's saving Private Ryan
- 7:39Speaker 1: where they're real bad crowd. They're getting at um. They're
- 7:43Speaker 1: like in that knife fight and he's like, I stab
- 7:46Speaker 1: it near throat and then the knife turns. He's like,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna stamb it near throat and he gets the
- 7:51Speaker 1: knife turns like I gonna starthroat, right, and they go
- 7:54Speaker 1: back and forth like that. I imagine me and it
- 7:57Speaker 1: in a battle like that, and I like to think
- 8:01Speaker 1: eventually I would turn it into his throat. I have
- 8:06Speaker 1: to know I have. It's like I gotta know, man. Yeah,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I'm I'm sure like everybody, I had this real weird
- 8:15Speaker 1: sickness when I went down to California. It was just
- 8:20Speaker 1: not feeling right, um for the you know, three days
- 8:25Speaker 1: I was down there. You're saying everybody in December, right,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and yeah, so I'm on like the part of me
- 8:32Speaker 1: that's like, boy, i feel like I've already got it
- 8:36Speaker 1: because that was just a weird thing that I don't
- 8:38Speaker 1: feel like that too early, not for cases in California.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You know, I heard a rumor. It just a rumors,
- 8:45Speaker 1: so I don't want to say too much, but I
- 8:47Speaker 1: heard a rumor that you and I were at a
- 8:51Speaker 1: place at a gathering. Yeah, that bad back in mid February,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and there have been cases traced to the gathering that
- 9:02Speaker 1: you and I were at. I bet, I bet a
- 9:06Speaker 1: large gathering. Every wildlife related gathering in the in the
- 9:13Speaker 1: US all happens February in March. Yeah, And every every
- 9:19Speaker 1: state agency person that I've been speaking with in the
- 9:22Speaker 1: last couple of months, which is a lot, they're always like, oh, yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 1: this conference that we had six biologists at that all
- 9:31Speaker 1: flew back home, had X amount of confirmed cases. So yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I'm ready to move on. I'm ready to move on
- 9:40Speaker 1: in more ways than one. I'm ready to move on,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and let's talk about a new thing. I'm but I
- 9:48Speaker 1: want to finish it with I hope that you don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: get it, because I don't think you're fully thinking it through.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I know you want to have that that knife battle
- 9:55Speaker 1: with COVID nineteen, but I hope you don't get it
- 9:58Speaker 1: and you had to live one mean what it would
- 10:00Speaker 1: be like. I hope you don't get it, but I
- 10:03Speaker 1: don't want to get it. I'm perfectly fine. I want
- 10:06Speaker 1: to get it if I knew that it wasn't gonna
- 10:08Speaker 1: be that bad kind of like I want to get scratched.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I want to get mildly scratch that other bracket your time, grizzly. Ah.
- 10:23Speaker 1: There's a new trend, a new shooting sports trend. If
- 10:30Speaker 1: you if you want to see on top about going
- 10:31Speaker 1: and I'm on Instagram, go on Instagram at Steven Ronnella,
- 10:35Speaker 1: ste v and Ronella um and you'll see a video
- 10:43Speaker 1: I just put up of Uh. People have always gone
- 10:48Speaker 1: out onto public land or you know, areas, and through
- 10:54Speaker 1: garbage everywhere and dumped appliances and computer monitors and what
- 10:59Speaker 1: have you and beer cans and shot them all to hell.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It's always happened. It's always been horrible, but it's always happened.
- 11:05Speaker 1: There's a new thing of that. You go out to
- 11:09Speaker 1: public land and do all the normal stuff. You still
- 11:12Speaker 1: dump all your garbage, you still dump all your beer cans,
- 11:15Speaker 1: you shoot them all the hell. You don't pick them up.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You strew paper everywhere. Don't pick any of that up
- 11:22Speaker 1: shell casings everywhere, don't pick that up light, junk on
- 11:28Speaker 1: fire all that. But the new thing is there's an
- 11:31Speaker 1: added thing of shooting trees over. Have you seen this?
- 11:37Speaker 1: I saw it on your video that you post and
- 11:39Speaker 1: we how many places have we seen shot trees shot
- 11:43Speaker 1: over this spring? No, two regions, multiple locations, Oh sure,
- 11:50Speaker 1: multiple locations within those spots in those zones. I probably
- 11:54Speaker 1: in the one location, I probably saw a half dozen places. No,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I think, honestly, I think it was more than a
- 12:00Speaker 1: half dozen places where people had more than a half
- 12:03Speaker 1: dozen clusters of trees where people had engaged in trees
- 12:07Speaker 1: shooting over. And I gather it's just like every time
- 12:10Speaker 1: you go out, every time you get a couple of
- 12:12Speaker 1: dollars saved up, you buy enough Ammo to go and
- 12:17Speaker 1: whittle away at the tree some more. Well, yeah, it
- 12:19Speaker 1: saves you money on not having to buy the targets
- 12:22Speaker 1: or beer having beer. Can No, I think that it's
- 12:24Speaker 1: not because they're putting targets on the trees. It looked
- 12:27Speaker 1: like they are deliberately do. What I'm saying is if
- 12:30Speaker 1: you don't have a target, you just use the tree.
- 12:32Speaker 1: At and shoot trees over, but you'd have to be
- 12:35Speaker 1: buying some serious bulk ammo oh. It's a long term
- 12:39Speaker 1: project engaged by groups of people, is shooting trees over.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It is the ugliest, ugliest thing. It gives such a
- 12:47Speaker 1: black like this garbage dumping public land. Now I'm not
- 12:52Speaker 1: opposed I shoot him, but every time we go to shoot,
- 12:55Speaker 1: we shoot on public land. Typically clean your junk up. Man.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I told you that it's like humiliating. It's humiliating to
- 13:04Speaker 1: be to see it and have to be like, that's
- 13:07Speaker 1: a version of me. That's like a dude. It likes
- 13:10Speaker 1: to shoot. He likes to hunt, maybe, but he also
- 13:14Speaker 1: likes to just ship up the woods. The Spencer took
- 13:18Speaker 1: us out to a chunk of state ground not too
- 13:20Speaker 1: far from here. I've been out there a couple of
- 13:22Speaker 1: times to shoot, and there's typically always somebody shooting out there.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But I always, you know, build my uh cardboard box
- 13:31Speaker 1: target uh and go through all the hassle of wandering
- 13:35Speaker 1: over there and picking it back up. Well, now the
- 13:39Speaker 1: box is absolutely necessary because I have to go pick
- 13:44Speaker 1: up everybody else's crap. You come home with your box, well,
- 13:47Speaker 1: everybody else's junk yeah, I mean it's it was shocking.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And the thing is, just like you were saying before
- 13:53Speaker 1: I cut you off, is I'm just a person shooting,
- 13:59Speaker 1: as is everybody else who's driving on that road, and
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's right next to the road. I'm indistinguishable from the
- 14:06Speaker 1: next person. And if they ever stopped, they're gonna be like,
- 14:09Speaker 1: Holy ship, these people are pigs, you know what I mean.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It's just it's bad. It's so bad. The reason you
- 14:15Speaker 1: gotta be extra careful with your garbage when you go
- 14:17Speaker 1: shooting is because I imagine. Okay, let's say you you
- 14:26Speaker 1: found the last ten people who totally shifted up one
- 14:32Speaker 1: of these tree shooting over areas, and you you uh,
- 14:37Speaker 1: surveyed them somehow or interviewed them. I bet you if
- 14:41Speaker 1: they had gone to a pristine place that wasn't shifted up,
- 14:45Speaker 1: they wouldn't have shifted it up. They wouldn't have shouted up.
- 14:48Speaker 1: There's certainly less less likely too. But the minute someone
- 14:53Speaker 1: goes and leaves all their trash and their casings laying
- 14:56Speaker 1: everywhere and tries to shoot a tree down, the next
- 15:00Speaker 1: mug that goes there, it's like, oh, I guess this
- 15:03Speaker 1: is just one of those spots and what's the difference.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Now there's there's no other way. Like the video I
- 15:12Speaker 1: put on Instagram doesn't even begin. That went on for
- 15:16Speaker 1: hundreds of yards. Yeah, that's it. That's an exaggeration. That
- 15:24Speaker 1: went on for two hundred yards, a lot of lead
- 15:27Speaker 1: land in the ground. I didn't have enough film to
- 15:29Speaker 1: film it all. Maybe we should uh inquire and see
- 15:33Speaker 1: if there's maybe some like old dumps that you know,
- 15:37Speaker 1: many portions of dumps aren't being used anymore for you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: regular dumping, and then we could steer these people to
- 15:44Speaker 1: go to the dump. You go to the dump to shoot, well,
- 15:49Speaker 1: you go to a gravel pit. It's kind of hard
- 15:51Speaker 1: to mess up a gravel pit. Like a gravel it's
- 15:52Speaker 1: already messed up. I like what you're saying, though, yeah
- 15:54Speaker 1: on us, because then you'd be like, if you can't
- 15:57Speaker 1: bear to part with your trash without shooting, here's a
- 16:03Speaker 1: lane for you at the county dump. At the count
- 16:06Speaker 1: pull in the way your truck. They're like, if you're shooting,
- 16:10Speaker 1: go shoot over there where they could charge you for
- 16:12Speaker 1: a busted TV, like they make a little extra money,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and be like her, you want a TV, take this
- 16:17Speaker 1: one dollars. You can go to the dump and buy
- 16:22Speaker 1: garbage from the dump to shoot up, pick up glad,
- 16:25Speaker 1: whatever you want, and they every week that his bulldoze
- 16:27Speaker 1: it back into a dumpster and everybody gets to shoot garbage,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and they can put old dead trees up and people
- 16:32Speaker 1: can shoot him over. I think that we you know
- 16:36Speaker 1: what I want to do. There's a local little river
- 16:38Speaker 1: access site that I wanted to do a clean up on.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I would rather because I feel more like um complicit
- 16:46Speaker 1: as a as a person that goes and shoots, that
- 16:49Speaker 1: uses public lands to shoot. I don't want shooting on
- 16:52Speaker 1: public lands to become illegal. That would be a real
- 16:54Speaker 1: pain in the ass. I think that we should start
- 16:57Speaker 1: a thing and now and then go to an area
- 17:01Speaker 1: that's been totally shifted up. I got so many ideas
- 17:06Speaker 1: of where to do this go to and also some
- 17:08Speaker 1: of its wire houser land. We just found some wire
- 17:11Speaker 1: houser land that have been like basically just like like
- 17:15Speaker 1: completely desecrated by recreational shooters. And it's a lot easier
- 17:20Speaker 1: for a place like wire Houser to be like you
- 17:22Speaker 1: know what, man, We're done no more. For those not aware,
- 17:27Speaker 1: wire Houser is one of the largest landowners in the US,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and they're pretty good about access. It's a private entity,
- 17:34Speaker 1: it's a um timber company, and yeah, historically very good
- 17:39Speaker 1: about access. If I was the CEO of wire Housing
- 17:41Speaker 1: and I had to be driving down the road around
- 17:43Speaker 1: talking about I'd be like, you know what, I don't care, man,
- 17:45Speaker 1: that's it. Yeah, that's it. Very good about access, to
- 17:49Speaker 1: the point that a lot of people who recreate on
- 17:53Speaker 1: wire houser land just think that it's us for a
- 17:56Speaker 1: service land. Yeah, some guys we were just recently walking
- 18:02Speaker 1: down a road on wire houser land. It's a sign
- 18:06Speaker 1: very clearly expressing all more no motorized anything. So it's
- 18:11Speaker 1: like they gotta sign ups like it's got a quad
- 18:13Speaker 1: runner with a slash through it, it's got a truck
- 18:16Speaker 1: with a slash through it. It's got a motorcycle with
- 18:18Speaker 1: a slash through it. It's got a snow will be
- 18:20Speaker 1: able to slash through it. A couple of days after
- 18:22Speaker 1: you were there, I parked in front of that gate.
- 18:25Speaker 1: It's like like it had recently rained. I didn't see
- 18:28Speaker 1: any fresh tracks cutting and there oh no, and the
- 18:30Speaker 1: greater had gone down the main road and I didn't
- 18:32Speaker 1: see any tracks, and it was pretty early in the morning.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I didn't see any tracks cutting the edge of the
- 18:37Speaker 1: greater you know, and uh something, just like, oh, I
- 18:39Speaker 1: just parking front of the gate, and I'll keep If
- 18:41Speaker 1: anybody's thinking about driving up there, they all they can't go,
- 18:44Speaker 1: and I'll be up there by myself. Well, sure enough,
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'm up there. I've been hiking already for probably close
- 18:49Speaker 1: to two hours, and here comes a little side by
- 18:51Speaker 1: side really yeah, so they're cool. They drove me down
- 18:56Speaker 1: and moved the truck, and they drove me back up
- 18:58Speaker 1: so I could continue hunting. But they worked for a
- 19:01Speaker 1: wire houser, just breaking the law, just like what you're described. Well,
- 19:06Speaker 1: this gate that had been left open, but there was
- 19:08Speaker 1: no mistaking what was supposed to happen here. We hiked
- 19:12Speaker 1: up it and I come to an old four service truck.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I was like, that's weird, like old, like a you know,
- 19:18Speaker 1: eighties four service truck. And I thought like, I don't know,
- 19:21Speaker 1: maybe they have maybe wire house I don't know. Maybe
- 19:23Speaker 1: they bought bolt four service trucks and their guys use them.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I don't know. So eventually here comes a couple of
- 19:29Speaker 1: guys ripping down the road on motorbikes, and then I
- 19:33Speaker 1: realized that they drove their motorbikes in in the truck.
- 19:38Speaker 1: So they load their motorbikes up and then I'm walking
- 19:40Speaker 1: all the hell way back down the road and they
- 19:42Speaker 1: pull up and asked I want to ride, and I said,
- 19:44Speaker 1: you guys work here, and he looks at me like,
- 19:46Speaker 1: what in the world are you talking about? And I said,
- 19:48Speaker 1: because you're not. I'm not gonna get in because you're
- 19:50Speaker 1: not supposed to drive here. Like they're super like wire
- 19:53Speaker 1: houses are super clear about that. And it looked at
- 19:55Speaker 1: me like I was like a Martian, look like, who
- 19:59Speaker 1: is this wire houser? The gates open? Bro, didn't you see? Yeah,
- 20:05Speaker 1: it just kills me. Anyways, I think it's a good
- 20:07Speaker 1: project and this would be something you should spearhead cal
- 20:11Speaker 1: We should um develop a thing we're now, and then
- 20:17Speaker 1: we take a day off of work. I'm tracking so far,
- 20:22Speaker 1: go on, take it off work and go to places
- 20:26Speaker 1: where people have shot the hell out of the area
- 20:30Speaker 1: and clean up everything the trees that have been shot over,
- 20:36Speaker 1: cut them down off at the ground, cut the rest
- 20:40Speaker 1: of it up into stove wood, and uh, totally spit
- 20:46Speaker 1: shine that place. Then we can have a little leave
- 20:50Speaker 1: behind sign or something that says this place spit shined,
- 20:57Speaker 1: keep it spit shined. Yeah, I like I would love
- 21:00Speaker 1: to do. We talked about this on the last podcast,
- 21:02Speaker 1: so right talked about cleaning up. Actually we have been
- 21:05Speaker 1: to Missoula and seeing that. Well, do we talk about
- 21:07Speaker 1: shooting trees over? Yeah? We did, because yeah, a little bit,
- 21:10Speaker 1: that's all right, that's a message worth pounding twice. No,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it just interesting up there because it's
- 21:15Speaker 1: obvious been going on long enough and then seeing enough
- 21:17Speaker 1: of it that there already was a forest service sign
- 21:20Speaker 1: that said no shooting of trees. As if you like
- 21:23Speaker 1: an actual sign like a commission, have a effing sign
- 21:28Speaker 1: to know you're not supposed to shoot trees. They shoot
- 21:31Speaker 1: him over at about chest height chess net hite because
- 21:34Speaker 1: they're standing. And every young man when he gets his
- 21:38Speaker 1: first axe and he's kind of cut loose, what do
- 21:40Speaker 1: you go do? Chopped trees down? Right? And then you
- 21:43Speaker 1: get reprimanded for chopping green trees down? Most people, I
- 21:49Speaker 1: think that's around when you're seven or eight years old exactly.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I don't think seven and eight year olds are driving up. No,
- 21:59Speaker 1: that's the point I'm getting to, buddy, they missed that lesson.
- 22:04Speaker 1: We we had a game as kids. Remember there's there
- 22:06Speaker 1: used to be a show. None of you guys remember this.
- 22:08Speaker 1: There's a show called Name that Tune. I remember how
- 22:10Speaker 1: it went. But somehow, like there was like a thing
- 22:12Speaker 1: where you go, like the whole st names Bill or whatever.
- 22:15Speaker 1: You'd be like, Bill, I can name that tune in
- 22:17Speaker 1: five notes, and then they must like play I don't
- 22:21Speaker 1: know what it is. They play five notes, and you'd
- 22:23Speaker 1: say what it is? I wish I could remember the
- 22:26Speaker 1: details better. Anyways, we had a version we'd call chop
- 22:28Speaker 1: that tree, and you would, uh, you would have an
- 22:31Speaker 1: axe or what have you, and you look out the
- 22:33Speaker 1: sassafrast tree or something. You'd say, Matt, I think I
- 22:37Speaker 1: can chop that tree in five swings. And then you
- 22:40Speaker 1: see if you could do it, And we do it
- 22:42Speaker 1: sort of to the rhythm and cadence of name that
- 22:45Speaker 1: tune shooting over a tree. Like never never ever crossed
- 22:49Speaker 1: my mind. And I was talking to cal in December
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I asked him I could borrow his steel chainsaw
- 22:54Speaker 1: to harvest a Christmas tree, and he said well, well,
- 22:57Speaker 1: you don't want to use your twelve game you don't
- 23:01Speaker 1: have a gun. Yeah. We used to do Christmas tree
- 23:05Speaker 1: hunting every year and uh we would take my ten
- 23:12Speaker 1: gage shotgun and uh, select a nice Christmas tree. What
- 23:18Speaker 1: that diameter would the trunk be? When when you're gonna
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know, just like Charlie Brown cherees, you know, what's
- 23:25Speaker 1: the best load shot size for that project? Whatever you got,
- 23:29Speaker 1: but like three yeah, no more than that? Yeah right,
- 23:37Speaker 1: A lot of times you could get it in one shot.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, what range? Oh? Real close? Like ten feet
- 23:44Speaker 1: and under. You know, when we did our Christmas special,
- 23:47Speaker 1: we had a lot of emails, like I think there's
- 23:49Speaker 1: three from people whose tradition is to shoot trees down
- 23:51Speaker 1: to bring them home. That's different because at least you
- 23:53Speaker 1: shoot it down for a purpose. It's different than shooting
- 23:56Speaker 1: down eighteen inch diameter ponder roses. And how cleaning a
- 24:00Speaker 1: cup would that be when you were done? Cal Oh,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I mean there's a little trim work involved, and it
- 24:08Speaker 1: looked like someone shotow of the shotgun. Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I had, you know, one of those real tight strangler
- 24:15Speaker 1: choke tubes on the ten gauge, and yeah, that I
- 24:19Speaker 1: mean it, it'll it'll drop a tree. Oh, Brodie, work,
- 24:22Speaker 1: You're supposed to be calculating out what gauge of four
- 24:24Speaker 1: ten is? Well, we talked about I never did the
- 24:27Speaker 1: can let's figure it out. We're gonna get to uh
- 24:34Speaker 1: tree shooting down. Talked about that. You know it's al
- 24:37Speaker 1: asshole trees down. Talk about um oh okay, next thing
- 24:43Speaker 1: I want to jump into, Spencer, can you review for
- 24:45Speaker 1: us what happened when you called the man the morrel man? Yes,
- 24:49Speaker 1: and least be buying it. The last podcast, we talked
- 24:54Speaker 1: about Ronaldo or the San Francisco State University student that
- 24:59Speaker 1: figured out how to grow Morale's but then was murdered
- 25:01Speaker 1: under mysterious circumstances or not or not right he cracked
- 25:06Speaker 1: the code of Morales, was murdered before his patent was granted. Yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 1: My theory was that it was a hit job by
- 25:12Speaker 1: Little Caesar's right, right, because he had a lucrative contract
- 25:15Speaker 1: with Dominoes. So it was Jimmy John's or Dave Thomas
- 25:19Speaker 1: or somebody you know, it was after him. Nobody had
- 25:22Speaker 1: been able to crack soon now my little Caesar's. No,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I don't want to be like Alex Jones, I'll be
- 25:27Speaker 1: getting sued by people for so for forty years, no
- 25:32Speaker 1: one has cracked this code on how to grow morale's
- 25:34Speaker 1: like Ronald Oer did O R R O E R
- 25:39Speaker 1: I think oh R excuse me O W E R
- 25:43Speaker 1: O A Ronald Oer. Uh. But recently some articles out
- 25:49Speaker 1: of Iowa and some some news stations have covered this. Uh.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Some newspapers have covered this. A mushroom farmer there claims
- 25:57Speaker 1: to have figured out how to grow morale mushrooms. And
- 26:00Speaker 1: this spring he harvested about a hundred pounds, he said,
- 26:04Speaker 1: And this is after a decade's worth of efforts. And
- 26:07Speaker 1: so I was going to try to track him down
- 26:09Speaker 1: and talk to him about what his process is. If
- 26:11Speaker 1: he's scared for his life, those sorts of things they
- 26:15Speaker 1: track him down. Uh. And your your question, Steve, you said,
- 26:19Speaker 1: when you talk to him asking this, why are they
- 26:21Speaker 1: so hard to grow? So I asked him that, Um,
- 26:25Speaker 1: he didn't have a great answer. So then I went
- 26:27Speaker 1: to the internet. The Internet doesn't have a great answer either.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But basically what he said and what the rest of
- 26:31Speaker 1: the Internet agrees with, is that it just takes very,
- 26:35Speaker 1: very very specific conditions it takes the perfect soil moisture,
- 26:41Speaker 1: the perfect humidity, the perfect like air temperature, all those
- 26:47Speaker 1: things to make this happen. It's and then say we're
- 26:50Speaker 1: growing carrots. Look well, So then like the specifics of
- 26:53Speaker 1: this are amplified when you have to also have a
- 26:56Speaker 1: tree involved. So then you're like, you're like working with
- 27:00Speaker 1: two things. You're trying to make things perfect for the
- 27:02Speaker 1: mushroom as well as uh, you know because of symbio
- 27:06Speaker 1: work with this ya symbiotic relationship that it has with
- 27:09Speaker 1: the tree. So those two things just kind of compound
- 27:13Speaker 1: the difficulties of growing him around mushroom. I'll buy that
- 27:17Speaker 1: part about the tree part for sure. Yeah. So I
- 27:20Speaker 1: asked me, I said, what is your process? Like, can
- 27:22Speaker 1: we scare ahead as he's scared for his life? He's not.
- 27:25Speaker 1: He was aware, he's aware of Ronald oer Um. He
- 27:29Speaker 1: has looked at the patent. Nothing in his process is
- 27:32Speaker 1: inspired by the patent um. So there's no relationship here
- 27:38Speaker 1: between Ronald Ower's like growing strategy and his. Yeah, but
- 27:44Speaker 1: the man, I mean the powerful pizza lobby or the
- 27:49Speaker 1: underground underworld, I mean they might still get him. This
- 27:53Speaker 1: is also something ask and I said, their business interests
- 27:55Speaker 1: at this point, he said, yes, but nothing that he
- 27:58Speaker 1: is acting on at this point. His name is Josh Osborne.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Oh you're allowed to say his name. I mean that
- 28:05Speaker 1: newspapers covered it is Blues Blues best mushrooms out of Iowa. Um,
- 28:12Speaker 1: he said. His process is actually not um like that
- 28:16Speaker 1: unique to growing mushrooms. It's very similar to what you
- 28:19Speaker 1: do with other mushrooms that you cultivate. Starts with spores
- 28:24Speaker 1: in a peetree dish. From there, yeah, once he once.
- 28:28Speaker 1: He in this lab environment, the spores and the petrie dish,
- 28:31Speaker 1: the my celium starts to grow. The my celium is
- 28:34Speaker 1: what the little white fibers that live in tree. Yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 1: so I under like if you imagine, uh, this isn't
- 28:41Speaker 1: a great just a little bit helpful. Imagine that you
- 28:44Speaker 1: have an apple tree. The my celium is the apple
- 28:46Speaker 1: tree living underground, and then the morales are the apples
- 28:52Speaker 1: which has happened to form at the earth surface. That's
- 28:54Speaker 1: a great analogy. You like that? Yeah, Yeah, that's that's
- 28:57Speaker 1: very helpful when you're thinking about often get criticized. It's
- 29:00Speaker 1: from my analogies and I like that one. So my
- 29:03Speaker 1: wife doesn't well, this one's appropriate, doesn't like spores in
- 29:08Speaker 1: a petrie dish, which then turned into mycelium. The mycelium
- 29:12Speaker 1: is transferred to a eight by eight inch plastic bag.
- 29:17Speaker 1: From there, once the mycelium has grown a bit more,
- 29:20Speaker 1: I got distracted thinking about Uh, analogies have annoyed my wife.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Can you back up one step? So it starts with
- 29:27Speaker 1: the morale mushroom spores in a petree dish. Those spores
- 29:34Speaker 1: turn into my celium. He then takes and transfers the
- 29:38Speaker 1: mycelium from the petrie dish to a plastic bag. So
- 29:42Speaker 1: you now have the mycelium in a plastic bag. Once
- 29:45Speaker 1: it develops a bit more in this plastic bag, he
- 29:48Speaker 1: then takes it out to his field where he's going
- 29:50Speaker 1: to grow these morales. And there are three things that
- 29:52Speaker 1: he's done in three things that have success. You can
- 29:55Speaker 1: dump the contents of the bag onto the ground. You
- 29:58Speaker 1: could dig a hole and dump the contents of the
- 30:01Speaker 1: bag into that hole. Or you could dig a hole
- 30:04Speaker 1: and put the entire bag in the ground. He said,
- 30:07Speaker 1: all three have worked for him. Well, how do they
- 30:10Speaker 1: get into the bag? Well, I assume the bag is
- 30:12Speaker 1: open or ventilated or something. You know, the cat out
- 30:16Speaker 1: of the bag. He does this process in the fall,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and there's got to be some stuff that he's not
- 30:21Speaker 1: telling you, certainly, And why would he like It's like,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I'm a soaking it beer. He's got like a little
- 30:27Speaker 1: go for something that I'm a stranger calling him to
- 30:31Speaker 1: ask him for his greatest alconic spot in the world.
- 30:34Speaker 1: That's so, how exactly are you? Yep? Yep? So that's
- 30:38Speaker 1: the process. Yeah, what is he doing about? What is
- 30:45Speaker 1: he doing about the symbiosis that needs to occur between
- 30:49Speaker 1: this mysterious mushroom and the trees that it likes to
- 30:52Speaker 1: grow near. No tree necessary for his process, that's what
- 30:55Speaker 1: he's saying. Maybe the tree, it's like the petrick maybe helps,
- 31:01Speaker 1: it's the petri dish. Yeah, So he does this in
- 31:04Speaker 1: the fall, and he said, it's not so much about
- 31:06Speaker 1: the process leading up to it. For him, it's that
- 31:09Speaker 1: he has cracked the cold for the perfect timing to
- 31:11Speaker 1: do this and having the perfect amount of shade, the
- 31:15Speaker 1: proper amount of blocking the wind um, the proper temperature
- 31:20Speaker 1: to maintain how much sun is on it during the day,
- 31:23Speaker 1: all those things he's saying that is where others are
- 31:27Speaker 1: failing he's figured it out. Man, we had some big
- 31:30Speaker 1: old fat easier and I did Ni. Those are tasty
- 31:35Speaker 1: wild ones. You like to put a lot of butter
- 31:37Speaker 1: in that pan. Oh yeah, man, like to use but
- 31:40Speaker 1: I like butter. I like so much butter in there.
- 31:43Speaker 1: When you cook a Morrell, it's like a butter sponge.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I like to put enough butter in there that the
- 31:48Speaker 1: Morrell can't get it all that the Morrel's thirst for
- 31:51Speaker 1: butter is quenched and there's still butter left. We could
- 31:58Speaker 1: used more butter on those balls. We ate like alright now.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Josh had said in a newspaper interview that he'd like
- 32:05Speaker 1: to harvest a thousand pounds next spring. He thinks that's doable.
- 32:08Speaker 1: And I asked him how confident he is? What kind
- 32:10Speaker 1: of acre to re talk about? Well, uh, currently he's
- 32:14Speaker 1: doing a half acre plot. Um. When I asked him
- 32:17Speaker 1: about like how practical, Like how likely do you think
- 32:20Speaker 1: that's gonna happen, this thousand pound goal that you have,
- 32:22Speaker 1: he said it's all dependent on the amount of time
- 32:25Speaker 1: that he has and the amount of funding that he has,
- 32:27Speaker 1: because he said it's very expensive to do this on
- 32:30Speaker 1: like a half acre plot. And girl hundred pounds. Um,
- 32:33Speaker 1: now you gotta take that times ten, And he said
- 32:36Speaker 1: he's not sure like that. Those are limiting factors at
- 32:38Speaker 1: this point, his time and his money to pull this off.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Is he a mycologist? Um, I I don't. He's a
- 32:46Speaker 1: mushroom farmer. And oh okay, so so so that he's
- 32:51Speaker 1: got just a general background in mushroom farment, right, Yeah,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I guess I call it that earlier. Yeah, So I
- 32:56Speaker 1: don't know. Um, you know, we'll see what happens next
- 32:59Speaker 1: spring with this. If he has a thousand pounds, I'm
- 33:01Speaker 1: a believer, But at this point I'm still skeptical that
- 33:05Speaker 1: he has solved it, because it would be like if
- 33:09Speaker 1: if Brody went out to some pond and dumped in
- 33:13Speaker 1: like a bag of small bass finger ling, and then
- 33:18Speaker 1: came back in a year and caught some adult bass
- 33:21Speaker 1: and you said, I grew bass. That's right, It's not
- 33:23Speaker 1: necessarily that simple, and like I have created life, yes, yep,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and uh we just sae. An article on the meat
- 33:30Speaker 1: eator dot com the ten biggest morale mushrooms ever found,
- 33:34Speaker 1: and a majority of that list comes from this stretch
- 33:37Speaker 1: from like Iowa to Illinois, Indiana enormous like the size
- 33:43Speaker 1: of Yanni's court jar here and bigger, really big for scale.
- 33:48Speaker 1: They always have you know, the back of mushrooms demystified,
- 33:50Speaker 1: or is the front of mushrooms? Des is the back
- 33:52Speaker 1: of front of mushrooms demystified? You want to talk about morrel? Yeah,
- 33:57Speaker 1: I can't remember. Yeah, yeah, they probably a pounder more.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Some of some of these were wearing a pound inches
- 34:04Speaker 1: tall with a diameter of equal that. So did you
- 34:08Speaker 1: guys see that big fatty I found with Maggie last spring?
- 34:12Speaker 1: One giant morrel, I mean like a giant Look at
- 34:16Speaker 1: a piece of firewood landing there. So my my point
- 34:21Speaker 1: with that is that like Iowa is an amazing place
- 34:24Speaker 1: to go find morales and find big morales. Same thing
- 34:28Speaker 1: with the bast analogy. If you dumps I'm uh, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: like in southern California and then caught a bass, you
- 34:35Speaker 1: wouldn't be like, well, I grew bass. So we'll see. Suspenseful, man,
- 34:41Speaker 1: I love what I'm gonna say. The jury is still out. Suspenseful.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I'm dying. No, um, I'm dying for that guy to go. Spencer.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I can grow a Morrell out of that beard. You
- 34:54Speaker 1: got growing there, I hope so where you'll believe me now,
- 34:59Speaker 1: I want to do early plug I'm so I'm so
- 35:02Speaker 1: proud of the book we're working on that I want
- 35:04Speaker 1: to start plugging it now, even though it's months and
- 35:05Speaker 1: months away. Really turned it in yet still finishing it up.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I think, I predict. I hate to say this kind
- 35:13Speaker 1: of stuff. I think that I think that it will
- 35:16Speaker 1: do well. Oh, I think a lot of people will
- 35:19Speaker 1: be interested in what we've got. We've already gotten several
- 35:21Speaker 1: emails that you could basically use as blurbs and advertisements
- 35:26Speaker 1: for it. They haven't seen it, but they have people
- 35:29Speaker 1: that have like helped you guys on parts of the
- 35:32Speaker 1: book and being able to read through those parts, and
- 35:34Speaker 1: they are professionals in that arena of you know, we
- 35:39Speaker 1: can talk about what the books about, right, yeah, of
- 35:43Speaker 1: the emergency, you know, or just a h easy meat
- 35:49Speaker 1: eater's guide to wilderness skills and survival. Let's taken, don't
- 35:54Speaker 1: use it. It is long. When we did the Guy
- 36:00Speaker 1: books all those years ago, and we're working on those
- 36:02Speaker 1: Guy books long time. But we did the Guy Books
- 36:04Speaker 1: all years ago. We got done and it was seven
- 36:05Speaker 1: hundred pages long, and I went down to my publisher
- 36:08Speaker 1: and we had a meeting, and she's like, you know, um,
- 36:10Speaker 1: short of like the Bible. Uh, if we don't, there
- 36:15Speaker 1: aren't seven hundred page long books and and uh. She
- 36:21Speaker 1: was like, either gotta get rid of half of it
- 36:22Speaker 1: or it's two. And I was like, Hey, we'll just
- 36:24Speaker 1: make two books. And that's what the guide books became. Yeah,
- 36:28Speaker 1: I don't know what. I don't even couldn't even estimate
- 36:31Speaker 1: what our page count would be. I asked Havannah to
- 36:33Speaker 1: take a stab at it. She thinks that's she thinks
- 36:35Speaker 1: that we're probably gonna be coming in and around hundred
- 36:38Speaker 1: and fifty thousand words, so twice as long, for instance,
- 36:41Speaker 1: as American Buffalo. Okay, because I came in about seventy words.
- 36:46Speaker 1: A big tomb? Is that how you say it? Tom Toms?
- 36:51Speaker 1: Where you putting dead books? Well, I feel like I'm
- 36:54Speaker 1: ready for a ton It's fitting for either verty of
- 36:58Speaker 1: this book. Right now, we're in the navigation. Yeah chapter.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I just wrote a Pulitzer Prize winning section. I don't
- 37:08Speaker 1: mind saying this myself. I just wrote a Pulitzer prize
- 37:10Speaker 1: winning section on walking on the ice. Read Nice Frozen
- 37:18Speaker 1: Lakes rivers ponds read nice, Nice that they could sections
- 37:23Speaker 1: of books for pullet surprises, because I feel like I'd
- 37:27Speaker 1: go up against you with the river thing. The river
- 37:30Speaker 1: just yeah, being on rivers, being on the ice man
- 37:33Speaker 1: reading it, the noises, it makes what those noises mean.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Watching out for beaver runs freak out. Yeah, watching out
- 37:41Speaker 1: for beaver runs. But you can fall. I found the
- 37:43Speaker 1: most times I've fallen through the ice has been related
- 37:44Speaker 1: to falling into beaver runs. People don't see that. You
- 37:47Speaker 1: go get a hundred books about this subject, and you
- 37:49Speaker 1: won't find any of them talking about beaver runs. Spencer.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You know what I really love about Brody and Steve
- 37:54Speaker 1: is how humble they are. Well, No, because Spencer has
- 37:57Speaker 1: taken a few licks in this book. Yeah, he like
- 38:00Speaker 1: the only person that contribute the stove talking about Yeah,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you got like a quote or two in there. Spencer's
- 38:11Speaker 1: been Spencer's contributions to the book have been um. Spencer's
- 38:16Speaker 1: been doing like his infamous bullshit alerts. But Spencer like
- 38:20Speaker 1: takes down um like it's very instructive, informative. It's just
- 38:26Speaker 1: like it's just mounds, mountains and mountains and mountains of information.
- 38:30Speaker 1: So it's chapters are like um, things that bite, sting,
- 38:36Speaker 1: mall and kill man. You're giving everything away anyways, Spencer, Uh,
- 38:42Speaker 1: you think my land too much out and I think
- 38:44Speaker 1: you gotta have some some thirst for what's coming, just
- 38:47Speaker 1: like a trailer for a movie. They don't give everything away.
- 38:51Speaker 1: How many words did you say, Savannah said it is,
- 38:54Speaker 1: I said last night, Well, um uh, she said something
- 39:01Speaker 1: like one fifty k metric tons. I googled how many
- 39:06Speaker 1: words per page in a book, and this says per
- 39:10Speaker 1: one hundred pages, you're looking at about twenty words, So
- 39:14Speaker 1: then you're looking at like a six Well, I'm just
- 39:17Speaker 1: like giving you a rough, rough estimate of what Google says.
- 39:21Speaker 1: You typed in the truth about book length. Yes, yep,
- 39:34Speaker 1: I did the same, a little bit of research for
- 39:37Speaker 1: a deal for the Weekend Review because when I had
- 39:40Speaker 1: fifty episodes and there's uh, you know, how they put
- 39:44Speaker 1: books together these days has changed quite a bit, and
- 39:47Speaker 1: what type of font and what's acceptable, and there's there's
- 39:50Speaker 1: a lot of changes in there. Um. I think good
- 39:53Speaker 1: lead ins for the chapters, though, it would be are
- 39:56Speaker 1: you sure you want to get into this? Because people
- 39:59Speaker 1: are gon be overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge per chapter.
- 40:03Speaker 1: But it's what But in the book, we take the
- 40:05Speaker 1: opposite of the bear Girls approach. Bear Girls. This thing
- 40:08Speaker 1: is like watch out, don't want to be caught outside.
- 40:11Speaker 1: If you get caught outside, hustle home, right, and to to
- 40:14Speaker 1: make a show about how quick you can hustle home
- 40:15Speaker 1: for being outside. This is more like, um about embracing
- 40:19Speaker 1: it right. And it's not like that. It's oh, it's
- 40:22Speaker 1: so fearful. It's like, hey, here's some things. But Spencer,
- 40:26Speaker 1: his contribution has been, Um, are you really supposed to
- 40:30Speaker 1: snuck suck out sneak venom? Um? Is bear girls always
- 40:36Speaker 1: drinking piss? Is that helpful? Uh? Are you supposed to
- 40:42Speaker 1: uh pull the bullet out of your body? After he
- 40:44Speaker 1: gets a bullet in him? People are gonna look all
- 40:47Speaker 1: this stuff up now. Good thing, there's more pages to read. Brody.
- 40:54Speaker 1: I didn't know you're gonna be so cagey man. You
- 40:56Speaker 1: think i'd like to keep a wrap on things. Well,
- 40:59Speaker 1: you know what when we do uhum, when it comes out,
- 41:02Speaker 1: I'm just we're gonna do like a walk through. This
- 41:06Speaker 1: is I'm actually turning it like I'm actually turning. It's
- 41:08Speaker 1: getting close up now, I'm actually developing a little sense
- 41:10Speaker 1: of enthusiasm and pride project can see the light at
- 41:13Speaker 1: the end of the tunnel. Yeah, you've been on a
- 41:15Speaker 1: real emotional roller coaster in regards to this project. I hate,
- 41:19Speaker 1: I hate doing stuff. Plus pictures in this book, right, illustrations, illustrations,
- 41:25Speaker 1: very good illustrations. Is that Pete doing the illustration, same
- 41:28Speaker 1: illustrator we worked with in the past. Yeah, I want
- 41:32Speaker 1: a million dollars from Savannah. When she asked me if
- 41:36Speaker 1: I would possibly have his contact information, possibly like the
- 41:40Speaker 1: contract and the amount of with stating the amount of
- 41:43Speaker 1: money that we paid him per illustration from the last projects,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and uh boy, just had it all tucked away in
- 41:49Speaker 1: a file, you know, under guide books. Yeah, old, I'll
- 41:53Speaker 1: see if she'll pay up. That's great his contribution finding
- 41:59Speaker 1: that helping us find the illustrator's email address. I do.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I do think that is a much healthier approach. Though.
- 42:06Speaker 1: It's kind of like, listen, if at some point in
- 42:08Speaker 1: your outdoor career you don't find yourself in this position,
- 42:12Speaker 1: you've probably not been doing things right, so embrace it. Yeah. Yeah, like,
- 42:18Speaker 1: I'll tell you about me chapters. But I don't want
- 42:19Speaker 1: Brody to get uh nervous. Well, we do mention four
- 42:22Speaker 1: tens as a survival gun. You want to take a
- 42:24Speaker 1: stab at what gauge you think before? Oh yeah, just
- 42:27Speaker 1: so people understand, Brody, that was quality and bring it
- 42:33Speaker 1: back in the pivot. Yeah, get a little if they
- 42:36Speaker 1: gave out peel surprises for pivots. Yeah, I'm always this
- 42:39Speaker 1: year's prize for pivots, Brody Anderson. Go ahead, Steve, take
- 42:46Speaker 1: a crack at what gauge four? Well, first I want
- 42:49Speaker 1: to give a couple of points here um one time?
- 42:55Speaker 1: Uh well for so a gauge when someone says a
- 42:58Speaker 1: twelve gage shotgun, that means is it would take twelve
- 43:02Speaker 1: lead spheres of that diameter to make a pound. So
- 43:05Speaker 1: twenty gage shotgun is it would take twenty lead spheres
- 43:10Speaker 1: of that size to make a pound. And then you
- 43:12Speaker 1: got you know, in the old days, you had eight
- 43:14Speaker 1: gauges that you're in around anymore? There any around. I
- 43:16Speaker 1: don't even know I ever even laid eyes on an
- 43:19Speaker 1: eight gauge the biggest Boer shotgun. It's even like kind
- 43:23Speaker 1: of common. Is a ten gauge, twelve gauge very common?
- 43:27Speaker 1: And you have sixteens twenties, and then some guys these
- 43:32Speaker 1: eight Ronnie Bain's got a twenty eight, I believe, And
- 43:36Speaker 1: then you get down to um. Then there's one that
- 43:38Speaker 1: breaks the system, and the four ten is a point
- 43:42Speaker 1: four one oh So the four ten uses the same
- 43:44Speaker 1: system as rifle calibers. So like a you know, if
- 43:48Speaker 1: you have a thirty thirty, let's say, let's say a
- 43:50Speaker 1: three h wind Mega three hund wind megas point three
- 43:53Speaker 1: oh eight of an inch. All your thirty calibers are
- 43:57Speaker 1: point three oh eight. They just shortened it up by
- 43:59Speaker 1: saying thirty, but point three eight four ten is a
- 44:03Speaker 1: has a you know, diameter of point four one oh
- 44:08Speaker 1: of an inch. Years ago, I got a death threat
- 44:11Speaker 1: from an animal rights person and they have threatened to
- 44:14Speaker 1: come get me with a fifty gage shotgun. And I
- 44:18Speaker 1: realized that that was about I think it was about
- 44:20Speaker 1: the size of a BB gun. So I didn't I
- 44:23Speaker 1: slept well at night. No one that even though I
- 44:27Speaker 1: might be shot, it would be by a very very
- 44:29Speaker 1: very small shotgun. So a four ten is take a stab.
- 44:33Speaker 1: What do you think four ten is a thirty five gauge?
- 44:42Speaker 1: It's really how'd you figure it out? Looking it up
- 44:48Speaker 1: the truth about four tens. You're not going to be
- 44:50Speaker 1: sleeping tonight in case that person is still lurking out
- 44:53Speaker 1: there with that fifty gauge. Oh yeah, it'd be worse
- 44:58Speaker 1: than that. I'd be like, whatever, it'll be worse than
- 45:00Speaker 1: my kids. Well, the FBI checked this dude out anyway. Anyway,
- 45:06Speaker 1: a dude FBI agent did it on speck. He just
- 45:08Speaker 1: saw I put a post about it on social media
- 45:11Speaker 1: and he um uh and he um. Later got to
- 45:17Speaker 1: hold me and said, I wouldn't worry too much about
- 45:19Speaker 1: that guy. He's kind of randuring, a raverer. I don't
- 45:21Speaker 1: wide variety of subjects ranging, he told me, ranging from
- 45:24Speaker 1: like the Palestinian conflict on down. But apparently the thirties
- 45:31Speaker 1: the gauge system at six, So at some point they
- 45:35Speaker 1: must have been making the thirty six gate shotguns. That's yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 1: a little teeny one and what's the four ten again?
- 45:44Speaker 1: Sixty seven accord, there's no way on earth according to
- 45:48Speaker 1: a pile of sixty seven lead balls that size to make,
- 45:51Speaker 1: according to American Rifleman dot org, which they say, that's
- 45:57Speaker 1: what they say. It's not like Bob's gun blogged com.
- 46:02Speaker 1: All right, who am I Well, if that get t
- 46:07Speaker 1: slugs sometime and way him out, Yeah, well it lad spears?
- 46:11Speaker 1: Well punkin balls? Do they still make those? Do you
- 46:15Speaker 1: know the guy that shot the guy that shot Billy
- 46:20Speaker 1: Billy the kid? Um? No, not the guy who shot
- 46:24Speaker 1: Pat Garrett in California? No, I'm wrong, guy not Billy,
- 46:29Speaker 1: the guy who shot the guy who shot Jesse James.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I believe that. So Robert Ford shot Jesse James, but
- 46:40Speaker 1: then later a guy shot Robert Ford. I believe the
- 46:44Speaker 1: guy that shot Robert Ford he had a like he
- 46:47Speaker 1: had a coach gun. I think it was like a remember,
- 46:49Speaker 1: I think it was a ten gage coach gun. He
- 46:51Speaker 1: apparently nearly cut him in half because he took a
- 46:55Speaker 1: bunch of pipe and a chisel and made a bunch
- 46:59Speaker 1: of of fragments, steel fragments, No, a lead pipe, a
- 47:05Speaker 1: bunch of lead fragments, and took a funnel and filled
- 47:08Speaker 1: the barrels up with pipe fragments and then give them
- 47:15Speaker 1: both barrels. That'll do that, I guess. Yeah, I think
- 47:19Speaker 1: that this is true. My understanding is that this is true.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I also just recently read I'm reading this really interesting
- 47:26Speaker 1: book called The Um. It's from the sixties, The Frontiersman
- 47:30Speaker 1: of the Yellowstone it's like a history of Yellowstone. Basin
- 47:33Speaker 1: talks about two mountain men to beaver trappers that got
- 47:36Speaker 1: in a dispute and they got real mad at each
- 47:39Speaker 1: oldren kind of toward their friendship apart, and later their
- 47:42Speaker 1: friends had to sort of encouraged them to patch it up,
- 47:45Speaker 1: and they had a kind of tradition where when two
- 47:47Speaker 1: people made amends, they would shoot a glass of whiskey
- 47:52Speaker 1: off of each other's heads to sort of prove that
- 47:59Speaker 1: to to prove that the bad tidings were over. One
- 48:05Speaker 1: of them puts the glass of whiskey on his head
- 48:07Speaker 1: and he tells everyone, I don't trust him. I think
- 48:09Speaker 1: he's gonna shoot me, and shoots him. And then the
- 48:12Speaker 1: guy at lo and Behold shoots him between the eyes
- 48:15Speaker 1: and kills him. Stone dead says, whoops, I made a mistake.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Didn't mean to nothing happens to him. Later, he gets
- 48:25Speaker 1: a drink and and opens up to the idea that
- 48:28Speaker 1: maybe it wasn't a mistake, at which point the dead
- 48:32Speaker 1: man's friend pulls out a pistol and blows a hole
- 48:34Speaker 1: through the guy's heart and kills him. What was the
- 48:37Speaker 1: original disagreement. I don't think it gets into what the
- 48:41Speaker 1: disagreement was. Another thing I didn't know until I read
- 48:43Speaker 1: this book. You know, Hugh Glass at the Revenance base,
- 48:45Speaker 1: and you know Hugh Glass died he you know, I
- 48:52Speaker 1: think this was this somewhere along the yellow Stone like
- 48:55Speaker 1: so like between like here in Miles City. Hugh Glass,
- 48:58Speaker 1: after all this ship he went through it gets malled
- 49:00Speaker 1: by the bear. Jim Bridger leaves behind. He finds Bridger
- 49:03Speaker 1: and a guy named Fitzpatrick and confronts them because they
- 49:06Speaker 1: left him for dead. Um. They're like like Hugh glaskets
- 49:10Speaker 1: malled by a grizzly bear, and the rest of their
- 49:13Speaker 1: crew of trappers splits and they leave Jim Bridger, who's
- 49:17Speaker 1: like nineteen, and this Fitzpatrick dude. They leave them and say,
- 49:19Speaker 1: don't leave until he dies. When he dies, you can
- 49:22Speaker 1: bury him. But they get sick of waiting and they
- 49:25Speaker 1: just leave, take all of his ship and leave, and
- 49:27Speaker 1: then he survives and crawls back. Years later he gets
- 49:30Speaker 1: he's with a couple of other trappers and they get
- 49:32Speaker 1: into a skirmish. Maybe I think it was with the
- 49:35Speaker 1: black Feet. They get into a skirmish with the black Feet,
- 49:38Speaker 1: and they get hold up in a spot and they
- 49:40Speaker 1: can't shoot their way out of the spot. And eventually
- 49:43Speaker 1: the black Feet light a grass fire and they know
- 49:46Speaker 1: they're just gonna get burned alive, and they dropped a
- 49:49Speaker 1: spark into a powder keg and blew themselves up. That's
- 49:53Speaker 1: how he died. And you know, me think we got
- 49:57Speaker 1: it bad. Bro wor who documented this to to like
- 50:03Speaker 1: report back on That's how they went. That's why I'm
- 50:05Speaker 1: afraid that it's not true, because I'm telling you things
- 50:09Speaker 1: that were written in the book in the sixties. It's
- 50:12Speaker 1: a it's a footnote. It's like a I'm telling you,
- 50:15Speaker 1: this is the stuff that I'm reading in a book
- 50:16Speaker 1: from the sixties. When I finished the book, I'll take
- 50:18Speaker 1: the parts that I'm wondering, like why in the hell
- 50:20Speaker 1: have I not read that other places and go find
- 50:23Speaker 1: out if since the sixties we've found that these are
- 50:27Speaker 1: just tall tales. And much of the hug Glass story,
- 50:31Speaker 1: like is that, um, I think that he was a
- 50:33Speaker 1: pirate more cast ashore in the Gulf of Mexico. Well,
- 50:37Speaker 1: just like more reputable UH historians will say that there's
- 50:41Speaker 1: a lot of sensational details from Hugh Glasses story. That's
- 50:44Speaker 1: what I'm afraid of, and that's why I'm trying to
- 50:46Speaker 1: like asterisk this information for people so they understand that
- 50:50Speaker 1: I'm in the middle of a book. I'm reading things
- 50:52Speaker 1: that I hadn't encountered elsewhere, and I'm suspicious that these
- 50:56Speaker 1: are tall tales that later historians have said, like, that's
- 51:00Speaker 1: not true, Brodie, Do you mind it's normally honest's job
- 51:05Speaker 1: type in how did Hugh Glass Die? And also type
- 51:07Speaker 1: in four Union shooting whiskey glasses off each other's heads
- 51:11Speaker 1: the truth about UM, and I didn't even have to
- 51:20Speaker 1: finish in it. UM. Moving on, Brody had a note
- 51:25Speaker 1: that he wanted to discuss something Um called the futility
- 51:28Speaker 1: of yelling at kids to be quiet all day in camp.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're doing your research right now, Brodie. Well,
- 51:38Speaker 1: I'll pick up on say that thought, because I'm gonna
- 51:41Speaker 1: pick up on the thing I want to talk about
- 51:42Speaker 1: is I took my kid out. My kids turned ten
- 51:47Speaker 1: and became a became of the age that he could
- 51:51Speaker 1: be legally My older boy became the age that he
- 51:55Speaker 1: could be legally apprenticed. So I had to go and
- 51:58Speaker 1: fill out a form online to be come an apprentice. No,
- 52:02Speaker 1: a mentor. I had to fill out a form online
- 52:04Speaker 1: to become a mentor hunter. There's no what does that
- 52:09Speaker 1: mean in the eyes of the state. So in this state,
- 52:13Speaker 1: when you're twelve, you can get hunting licenses and you
- 52:16Speaker 1: can hunt. You gotta go to hunter safety. You can
- 52:18Speaker 1: hunt when you're ten. You can hunt with a mentor.
- 52:25Speaker 1: The mentor has to be your legal guardian or a
- 52:27Speaker 1: blood relative right or it doesn't need, or someone of
- 52:32Speaker 1: or a licensed hunter of legal standing whom the guardian
- 52:38Speaker 1: has given authority to to take hunting. So if you
- 52:43Speaker 1: just ran, you ran, you know, encountered some little kid,
- 52:47Speaker 1: and you said, hey, you wanna go hunt, you couldn't
- 52:49Speaker 1: take hi hunting. You have to come get me to
- 52:50Speaker 1: sign a form saying that I am bestowing upon you
- 52:54Speaker 1: authority to take my ten year old hunting. Any person
- 52:58Speaker 1: can hunt two years as an an apprentice hunter, and
- 53:02Speaker 1: then they got to do hunter safety. But the way
- 53:04Speaker 1: they got set up was like at ten years of age,
- 53:06Speaker 1: you can become an apprentice hunter and then so he
- 53:10Speaker 1: can hunt this year and it's like you were within
- 53:12Speaker 1: army they spelled out. But it's like basically within arm's
- 53:15Speaker 1: reach of your mentor. Didn't Maggie and Tracy start out
- 53:19Speaker 1: that way? They had they went they did hunter safety though, so, um,
- 53:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't let someone really get away with that, Like,
- 53:27Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let you know. I might even have
- 53:30Speaker 1: him take hunter safety next summer. But either way, I
- 53:35Speaker 1: became a mentor. I became a mentor, and he became
- 53:38Speaker 1: an apprentice, and it's like five bucks, so that you
- 53:40Speaker 1: could for five bucks he becomes in a apprentice hunter.
- 53:43Speaker 1: And then unlike fishing, like you know in the last dates,
- 53:45Speaker 1: you don't need a fishing license till you're what fifteen
- 53:47Speaker 1: sixteen years old, they got to buy the full on license,
- 53:52Speaker 1: and they can't hunt stuff that has any kind of
- 53:54Speaker 1: limited draw. They can't hunt bears, basically hunt like deer
- 53:57Speaker 1: and small game as an as an apprenticed hunter. So
- 54:02Speaker 1: he turned ten just in time for the last weekend
- 54:04Speaker 1: of turkey season. We went out, had a good time.
- 54:08Speaker 1: He got up at four in the morning, three mornings
- 54:10Speaker 1: in a row, which is cool. Um, we knocked around
- 54:14Speaker 1: and had a very close encounter with a turkey that
- 54:16Speaker 1: was I mean, you're gonna think I'm exaggerating the Turkey
- 54:21Speaker 1: was for me to fill the engineer. But the catch
- 54:25Speaker 1: is that this entire table was an impenetrable juniper bush
- 54:32Speaker 1: that if you look really carefully, you could see movement
- 54:35Speaker 1: through the bush, but you couldn't make hide in your
- 54:37Speaker 1: hair of it. And I had my kids sitting right
- 54:39Speaker 1: between my legs because I wanted to be able to
- 54:41Speaker 1: look down at what he's looking at in him, trying
- 54:46Speaker 1: to see he's like leaning around, and things got a
- 54:48Speaker 1: little squirrely, and our line of site wasn't the same
- 54:51Speaker 1: where I could see a Turkey's fan as he moved
- 54:56Speaker 1: away from the juniper bush. I can see this a
- 54:58Speaker 1: little farther way now, but I can see a turn
- 55:00Speaker 1: he's fan playing his day, and I'm like, hey, if
- 55:03Speaker 1: you see him, if you see you know, eventually Turkey
- 55:05Speaker 1: waters off. He doesn't get a shot, and he just
- 55:08Speaker 1: looks like he's very unhappy. My kid is very unhappy,
- 55:11Speaker 1: very down on himself. And he said, uh, he I'm
- 55:15Speaker 1: courting him. He said, I feel like such a loser.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And I got to ask him, like, what happened? Why
- 55:20Speaker 1: do you feel like a loser? And he said, I
- 55:23Speaker 1: thought I didn't recognize I now know that I saw
- 55:27Speaker 1: the head, but I he wasn't expecting this thing that's
- 55:31Speaker 1: changing colors from blue to red. And he said he
- 55:34Speaker 1: saw it and thought it was a flower. Hey, he
- 55:38Speaker 1: did the right thing. He wasn't sure he saw it
- 55:41Speaker 1: through the tail fan and he said. It wasn't until
- 55:43Speaker 1: after the turkey left and I looked at our decoy
- 55:47Speaker 1: and then I realized that was the head. Man. I
- 55:52Speaker 1: feel his pain. That's good that he was able to
- 55:54Speaker 1: look at the decoy and then recognize that that that
- 55:57Speaker 1: clicked together, he said, he said, I thought He said,
- 56:01Speaker 1: I thought it was a flower with a thick stem.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Oh wow. And then it occurred to him that he
- 56:07Speaker 1: was looking through the fan very close a little. But
- 56:13Speaker 1: in any case, it was lucky we heard any turkeys
- 56:15Speaker 1: with the amount of noise and camp. Yeah, I got
- 56:19Speaker 1: Brody gout the camp. I got to the camp. I
- 56:22Speaker 1: started yelling at all the kids to be quiet. Brody's like,
- 56:24Speaker 1: I already gave up on that. Yeah, but we got
- 56:31Speaker 1: into him anyway. How far were you? It was like
- 56:34Speaker 1: eight fifty yards at one I could hear him screaming
- 56:39Speaker 1: and yelling. And I got out on X and I
- 56:44Speaker 1: had the camp marks and I knew where I was,
- 56:46Speaker 1: and I did the line distance function that was eight
- 56:49Speaker 1: hundred thirty three yards a loud, and my kid kept saying,
- 56:54Speaker 1: my boy, my little boys, like I could hear Rosie
- 56:56Speaker 1: and Matt, but you can't hear Rosie and Matt. You
- 56:59Speaker 1: know why, don't Like, by god, you can hear ros
- 57:05Speaker 1: three yards away. Maybe that puts those turkeys at ease. Well,
- 57:08Speaker 1: two years in a row, including this year, they shot
- 57:10Speaker 1: gobbled turkeys by playing. But I don't think it's I
- 57:13Speaker 1: don't think it's like beneficial. I think you created ever
- 57:18Speaker 1: increasingly wide area of animals animalss area around you. Um,
- 57:27Speaker 1: we were definitely thinking about relocate. We've been kind of
- 57:30Speaker 1: pushing camp in closer and closer to the turkeys over
- 57:33Speaker 1: the last five years, and I think next year we're
- 57:35Speaker 1: gonna be marching back retreating because because my girls have
- 57:39Speaker 1: gotten louder. I think that early on they were they
- 57:42Speaker 1: would yell in whatever, but they were smaller, the didn't
- 57:44Speaker 1: have lungs, they didn't have lungs, And now it's the
- 57:47Speaker 1: same thing. I mean, I remember being like basically in
- 57:50Speaker 1: the next valley and being like there's no way, but
- 57:54Speaker 1: then sure enough, like one still night. I'm sitting there
- 57:56Speaker 1: and I got the dog with me, and he keeps
- 57:58Speaker 1: running like fifty yards and then sitting there and looking
- 58:01Speaker 1: in that direction, and finally I'm like, oh yeah, he
- 58:03Speaker 1: can hear everybody back there camp. I mean we were
- 58:06Speaker 1: like a thirty minute walk. You know, when we're out filming,
- 58:10Speaker 1: we try to and we got lacked. We get we lapsed.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Then we come back to it. But we have this
- 58:14Speaker 1: thing that this ideal that we have and we try
- 58:17Speaker 1: to a little bit stick with it is what we
- 58:20Speaker 1: call the Mkuschi Code of silence because the mkushi um
- 58:24Speaker 1: an indigenous group in South America, they don't yell. They
- 58:29Speaker 1: don't yell. If someone's down at the boat down at
- 58:32Speaker 1: the river and you're like at camp and you're like,
- 58:34Speaker 1: oh man, he should grab hope he grabs the big pot, right,
- 58:38Speaker 1: I would be like, hey, grab the big pot. What
- 58:42Speaker 1: the big pot? Right? And that's just how you go
- 58:45Speaker 1: about your business. They would um walk down until their
- 58:51Speaker 1: faces were twelve inches apart, and you would say, grab
- 58:55Speaker 1: the big They never make noise. They don't yell, they
- 59:00Speaker 1: don't make noise. Maybe a tree was falling on the
- 59:02Speaker 1: divide out, but they don't make noise for what reason?
- 59:05Speaker 1: Because they're hunters. They don't make noise. It's just quiet,
- 59:13Speaker 1: just ingrained into the way they speak. They speak to
- 59:16Speaker 1: people only that are right there. They don't communicate to
- 59:20Speaker 1: people that are far away. When I want my kids
- 59:24Speaker 1: to come down to eat, I don't move five or six,
- 59:30Speaker 1: five or six times if you need to, I don't
- 59:32Speaker 1: move anywhere I can walk over there. I'm just gonna
- 59:36Speaker 1: scream nine times with increasing intensity. So yeah, they were allowed.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Another observation was just brody, was one? Tell mebut you
- 59:48Speaker 1: know how you mere a minute? Man? Oh god dah man. Frustrating,
- 59:52Speaker 1: isn't it like? It never seems like And maybe this
- 59:56Speaker 1: is like people that just aren't dialed into a certain system,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: or they don't feel the urgency that we feel. But man,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: people take a long time to get ready. Adults, don't
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: your kids? Yeah, even adults, And yeah, kids, I like,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: I'll I'll stick Hayden in the sleeping bag, in his
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: sleeping glows, shake him and say let's go. And he's
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: pretty good about getting up early. That was your trick. Yeah,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: get him, just slam him sleep in their clothes so
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: you get him already. I was wondering how he's ready
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: so fast. Oh yeah, just yank him. He's all like,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: just drag him out of the area. But yeah, adults
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: just like don't. But you're talking about getting ready for
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: to go hunting, yeah, or really whatever, but sure, yeah,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: it's like getting light. You should have been sitting under
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: the tree half an hour ago and you haven't even
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: left camp yet or whatever. Yeah. There was one afternoon
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: when when um me and my wife are gonna go
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: out and listen for gobbles, and uh, Brody's wife offered
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: to let us leave our young uns there, and so
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: I was like very like like I'm a minute man,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: I was like very ready to go. I'm like ready
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: for the American Revolution one by air, one by land two.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: If I see who's that guy, Paul Revere? You know what?
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Historians later tried to say that Paul Revere wasn't real.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I can't remember who the politician was, but he said
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I love Paul Revere, whether he wrote or not. Ah. Anyhow,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I would not then look at my wife because I
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: was like why, like what what what is like? Why
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: why haven't we left? Why is it now so much
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: longer later and we haven't left? And I would like
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: try to look at her in like distinct moments, and
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: in every distinct moment it did, in fact seem like
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: something was happening, Like she wasn't sitting there. I'd be like, like,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: what is she doing? And I try to like look
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: at her and like, oh, she is looking for one
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: of the kids shoes. You know. Then I would like
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: then twenty minutes to go by, and I'd look at
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: her and be like, oh she is. But so all
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: the parts make sense, but the some of them doesn't
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: make sense that how am I ready for an hour? Yep?
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: And you get like a group of people who don't
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: feel that urgency, and it just makes it even worse
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: because they look around and she knows that I'm irritated
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: cause I'm just generally irritated about wanting to go, and
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: she's like, I don't care if he's irritated. And since
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: the other people that are doing something, they don't, they're
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: also wandering around, so it must be okay to keep
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: wandering around. And then you wait an hour and she'll
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: find me right and she'll be like, we should get
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: the kids lunch. Yeah, I was gonna say. The other
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: perspectives could be that, like, damn, Stephen Brody would be nice.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: They just helped me find this other shoe and then
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: we could get them out of here and knocked out,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: you know, and then we can all get out of here. Instead,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: those two are just standing over there with their hands
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: in their pockets, going hurrying down. I know, no we
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: for the first time, I think it's an age thing.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Is I crossed some threshold now where I'm like, I
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: don't even care about food, coffee, anything. I will just sleep.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: And I started doing the pants things harder woodpecker lips.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I'll just sleep in the pants, put my boots on.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: I usually always take my socks off. I don't sleep
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: good if I had my socks on my sleeping bag.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: But that way, I'm just like, I wake up, I'm
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: still blurry eyed. I'm just like Genever you kind of ready.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: She's like, oh yeah, and we just no coffee, no food, nothing,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: put the turkey vest on and just start walking down
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: the road and you'll wake up. But you know, your
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: body starts moving. You wake up and you're fine, and
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you just you start to realize that you don't really
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: need to hang out at camp and it's not You're
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: gonna enjoy that cup of coffee. It's gonna burn your burn,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: your lips and your tongue is you're trying to pound
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: boiling bean wash. Yeah, you could just put like um yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: but a bar in my pocket, Put some bars night before,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: put some bars in your turkey vest, put an energy
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: drink in your turkey vest. Go to sleep in your
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: turkey clothes and just leave. Yeah. And later in the season, man,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: holy sh it, it gets late early. Yeah, right now, brutal. Yeah.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: One guy last week and can't kill the bird at
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: like five oh five, kill seven something like that. I
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: killed my last weekend. I got a tax. Some brody.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I was laying in bed petting my dog, and we
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: get up. I get up as soon as I can
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: see the glow in the window. Man, I get up,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: and I was laying there. I just it was just
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: literally enough. I left the dog and on the bed
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: and I got a tax. Some brody was like, what
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the hell? Early? Yeah. I almost thought you shot it
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: out of the tree. No, it was fifteen minutes after
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: he flew down. Turkey hunting, you can't really do it.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: But a system that I like during big game season
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: is to roll out get hiking, get out to where
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna glass, and then boil up a cup coffee
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: and have my my scene all set up and ms
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: on plas and I'm got my butt pad out. I've
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: probably already pooped at this point. I'm drinking a cup
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: of coffee and I'm just just peel on that place
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: apart and it and the sun's coming up. You can
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: take pictures of at sunrise that you'll never ever see again,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: but you gotta do because it's so pretty. It's a
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: great situation, stress free. Man. We've done a few little
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: mountain tricks like that, like another mountain trick that we
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: kind of we try. We do a bit more filming.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Two is too. When it's when the times like this,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: we just we did this. Yeah. Uh, when it's like
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: you gott get up so damn early. You gotta got
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: three thirty four in the morning. You'll be up at
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: first light and then it doesn't get dark. You know
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: you're you're you're still hunting at ninety. Um is to
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: bring your gear, to bring a stove and some freeze
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: dry and just eat it five. I just told us
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: off in the backpack, so eat at five glass or whatever.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Through the hunt through the prime time evening and then
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: come home and you already eight. Yes, they just slide
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: in your bed instead of like getting in at nine
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: thirty weighing out whether or not you want to eat
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: or not, in order to then get up at four
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: in the morning. It's a lot nicer us to get
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: it taken care of. I agreed. And another thing is
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: sometimes we've gotten up in the morning, just brought our
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: sleeping bags and get up to a glass and spot,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and then get back in your sleeping bag and make
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: some coffee up in your glass and spot. That's big game, Yanni.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Can you share with everybody what had with your your
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: little truck thing? This is an interesting story. Oh yeah,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: well with my brother in law's struck, I think it's uh,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I hate bad talk the old Toyota tundra, but it's
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: a Toyota tundra. And um. Of course, when we talked
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: to the mechanic, he's like, I swear to you, this
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: is the first alternator I've ever changed on one of
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: these tundras. Anyways, Yeah, they had gone him and his
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: son had gone up to charge some devices and get
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: some service, and they kind of left camp and drove
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: up the hill. Maybe not far. I don't know, it's
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: like a quarter mile, like charging sternal batteries and whatnot. Yeah,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: external batteries, telephones, kindles, whatever else. And uh, they're sitting
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: there and you know, prior to that, we had seen
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: a minor bit of smoke um coming out of the engine,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: like on the trip in, and he had said he's
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: seen it the day before. But to me, I saw
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: it was so little and I smelled it. There wasn't
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: really like a bad smell, and I'm like, you got
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: some mud kicked up in there. It got hot and
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: it smoked, you know. Yeah, we're on in eastern Montana. Anyways,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: they're sitting up there, charging away, and he just happens
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: to be looking down at the dash as all of
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the gauges flipped from you know, one end to the
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: other end, back and forth twice, and then I think
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the engines running and basically the truck shutters and everything
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: just windows are wide open and there's nothing nothing. He
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: can't do anything. I think he could turn the key,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: but there was no lights. This absolutely couldn't change gears in.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: It couldn't. Yeah, yeah, I guess you have to have
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: power to shift. But um, I learned a lot. I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: learned that in at least in that um those years
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: of Toyota tundras, there's a little square box probably not
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: even an inch by inch um right next to the
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: gear shifter, and you can it's basically like a little
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: lid and you pop that out and that's what's in there,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: and you can take a pen and push it down
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: and then that allows you to change gears boxes. Yeah,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it's not a bot, I mean, like I said, but
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: you can put no I've seen those. I've never pride
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: one open. Yeah, that's what's in there. So at least
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: when when we figured that out, we knew we could
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: at least I could pull him down the mountain because
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: we're probably I don't know, five seven miles, had no idea.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: That's what's the netla on an unimproved dirt road. So
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: at least I could pull them out and then a
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: mechanic could or a toe truck can meet us. Um So,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: but when we realized so I'm trying to think, I
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: don't know. We were getting a lot of advice from
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: a lot of people and a different advice on on
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: what to do, but finally own guy says, you know,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: what you need to do is bypass the alternator. If
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you it sounds like you blew the alternator. If you
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: unhooked the alternator, charge up your battery. Your battery should
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: have enough juice in it to let you run the
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: vehicle for ten to twenty minutes until it dies again.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: And then you just pop the trunk, you know, and
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: recharge your battery and keep driving until you get to
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: where you need to get going. And sure enough that worked.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: So what did you do to bridge the gap once
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: you pull the alternator out? We just unhooked the alternator.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: That was it. You don't need to liken, No, we
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: just really, you know, tape the ends of those uh
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: wires so that you wouldn't ground out on anything, you know,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: if it touched. But that was it. Um and uh yeah,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: so we were able to drive out and then uh
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: we had we had a mechanic meet us. The mechanic
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: drove two hours to get there and then installed the
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: new alternator in a belt and a couple other things.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Ate himself a crisp Oh yeah, he had a good payday.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: He had a good but I think it was cheaper
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: than having it Toad are we allowed to say? Yeah? Yeah,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: but I think getting told short here because what do
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: you know what I mean, it's like you don't have
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: a whole lot of options. But I mean, look, if
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: you're a chief skate, you could probably limp your way home.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: And the method I just described by by charge eight
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: lottery driving thirty minutes down the highway, pull when it,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: when it shuts down, pull over, recharge the battery. It's
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: safe to do that. Yeah, right, that system though, I
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: mean you had to have been feeling good for driving
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: your truck out of that hole. Oh yeah. We had
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: some Yeah, we had some major wins. And at the
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: same time we managed to kill a couple of turkeys.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: So yeah. We had an Australian once blow a hole
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: through the floorboards of a pickup truck with a shotgun
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: and severed the fuel line and we had to tow
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: it twenty miles out of a Donna riverbed. And that
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: was a Bounty riverbed. It was a real bouncing I
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: wasn't there, but I remember that the episode. It was
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: in Australia. No, it was Australian abroad. He was in
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: New Zealand, New Zealand. But they're not allowed to play
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: with guns that much in Australia, so he's real curious
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: about a shotgun. He's trying to figure out how it worked.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: He's wishing he had your protection and to touch one
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: off in a inside of a vehicle. Oh horrible. Oh yeah,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: but Brody made a note that I didn't check back
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: in with you guys after, so we were starting to
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: make plans on how we're gonna get everybody out of there,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: because we had two full calling in the cavalry, but
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: they're not calling off the cavalry. Yeah. Well, the that place,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: I think you guys had it similarly after I talked
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: to your wife. But it'd be like one minute you
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: can like just make all the phone calls you want
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: to be working tax and then for the next twelve
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: hours it's like there's nothing only that. But when people
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: would call you, it actually you got a new phone
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: number or something, so it could be like the knock
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: can't It wouldn't just be like busy or not answer.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: It would be that it's like it tells you like,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: hey man, you know number can't be completed as dialed, right,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: And so it made like I was trying to call
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: my brother at one point I thought something. I was like,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: oh something, what happened. We had a big debate, so
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: I I tried, I didn't try. I actually you can
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: look at my text history and see that didn't go through.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: It was more about the debate that we had whether
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: we should just go home or wait to hear from
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: what we made. Me and Brodie didn't want to be um.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: Me and Brodie were trying to wash our hands in
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: the matter. So I eventually said to Brodie's wife, I
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: was like, so you're saying that we should take off,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: and then Stee's wife backed her up, because if this
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: blows up, just blows up in our faces. I don't
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: want to be I thought we should take off. I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: wanted to be there. I wanted to stay. And Carry's like, sure, okay,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I'm saying let's go, just like I'll live with it
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: whatever it is. Body. Yeah, and then you so, Yahni,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: you're now depressed. Yeah, it happens every year. I feel
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: like last year I got I got just enough turkey
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: hunting in and um it went all the way to
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the end of May, and afterwards, I just you know,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: happily put everything up, put all those breasts into my
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: freezer and and uh just went about, you know, looking
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: towards fishing or whatever. And uh but uh, and I
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: shouldn't complain too much because I still killed five birds
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: and I got you know, some hunting days in. But
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: I just had you know, great big plans and old
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: COVID nineteen shot holes in my like you were supposed
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: to be able to hunt Turkey's will primo, that's right.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Who else? I don't know. We were supposed to go
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: to Michigan and maybe Wisconsin. I still have half of mind.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: It probably pissed some people off, but you got. My
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: wife's out next week, so I have the kids anyways,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, Wisconsin seasons open through Tuesday, so
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: if I leave tomorrow, they're doing an extension. No, it's yeah.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: So if I left tomorrow, i'd have three days. Oh
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I love and you can kill what one a day there?
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: You can kill as many as you have tags for.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: But I don't know. That's there's a lot of other
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: things that need my attention to. But man, had I
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: not just solidified some fishing plans, i'd be fueling that fire.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, nice, because then we could just we wouldn't
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: have to stop because it's just a long enough drive
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: where I'll probably have to take a nap somewhere and there. Hey,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: have we have we have we covered? Have we talked
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: about the male the rough grouse finding? No? Definitely, I
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: think that I have made a scientific discovery. Well as
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: well Yan has made a scientific Discoverybody told me about it. Well,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I to forget who someone's tent was right next to
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: my tent, seth. I think both of us got that
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: discovered that I did not a rough grouse. They do
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: it all year round. Rough grouse drum and when a
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: rough grouse is drumming, he takes he gets up on
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a log, gets about a perch and beats his wings
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: on his body and it makes this noise. One might
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: think this is straight from YouTube. The thumps are produced
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: by the beating of the wings. Oh yeah, it was
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: like he's doing in his throat, but he's also beating
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: his wing in an actuality. The thumps are little sonic
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: booms created his air suddenly fills a vacuum made when
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: the wings are thrust outward from the breast. I would
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: amend that's the same thing, though to say one might
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: think the thumps are made by a little Honda generator
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: because when I played again, Phil, I remember when my
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: brother Matt turned twelve and he had to go sit
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: in his own tree stand. He couldn't sit up in
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: dad's tree stand anymore with him. I was. Then I
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: went and sat with Matt and his tree stand. So
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: he was twelve, I was nine or eight, and I
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: remember sitting. I could take you and show you the
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: exact Dame tree we're sitting in. Remember sitting there and
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: he listening to a grouse, a rough grouse drumming. I
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: was staying earlier. They they'll drum all your I don't
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: all year, but they drum all around. But they really
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: like to drum in the spring because it's like a
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: territorial thing. Anyways, I remember saying to my brother Matt, oh,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: that guy finally got that lawnmower running, or that guy
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: can't get that lawnmower running, or something in him saying
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: that's a rough grouse because it's like a guy trying
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: to get an old beater lawnmower gone. Uh. There's a
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: thing in rough grouse biology where there's a drumming log
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: and people will even when when assessing habitat or when
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: um trying to get population estimates. There's even a thing
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: of like using drumming logs as a way to assess habitat,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: being that there could be suitable rough grouse habitat that
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: is in fact not suitable due to a lack of
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: drumming logs. I never knew that they drummed at night,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: but we the other night had a rough gruff grouse
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: drum all night. Bios. Not only that, Not only that,
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: but that's son of a bit is out walking around
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: at night, going from spot to spot to spot drumming.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: You want to talk about a vulnerable bird, man, Hold
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: on there, They moved from one spot to another. Yes,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: that bird moved around at night. Yeah, we had the
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: same thing. Happened a couple of weeks ago when we
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: were camping. He would go from he went from one
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: spot to another. It woke me up at two thirty.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: I was like, oh shit, I'm late. I gotta you know.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I thought it was morning. He just kept going. No,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: I understand that, but I didn't know that he moved. Yeah,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: we went from like our tents over to your tents.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Is he hoping that it pays off that night? Like
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: if female is going to confine him or is he
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: just like planning for tomorrow morning. Well he's it's like
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: territorial too. He's like saying, like, this is my spot.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: I just read on all about which comes out of
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Cornell Ornithology, and that you want to find out bird
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I was just quick plug. You want to find out
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: the dope on birds, go to Cornell? Absolutely yea um,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: although they didn't have that. I just that I read
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: to you about the vacuum sonic boom. But it's saying
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: that it will also do this drumming on moonlitch nights,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: which it was when we were out there every night
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: thing and just when there's visibility that it was a
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: bright night, it was. It was so bright you could
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: see the moon like it was looked like someone was
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: holding a flashlight outside your tent. Huh, forty six years
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: on this planet and I hadn't had a rough grouse
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: drumming all night? Yeah? What else? What else is interesting
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: is that that little sequence only last eight seconds? And
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: how many times do you think he moves his wings
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: in those eight seconds? No, not the one I heard?
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, because that little end explosion. Oh yeah, like
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: oh it died again? Man m yeah, that bagger was
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: you would think that annoys like someone else was saying.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: It was Garrett that was saying. He's like, yeah, first
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: it's like real calming and nice, like listening to the
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: stream trickle by, you know, the rough grouss drumming, and
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: then an hour later he's ready to strangle that that bird,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: didn't you guys say you could like hear it dragging
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: its wings on the ground or something. Right, Well, we
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: got into our tents. Yeah, you know, you could hear
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: him like literally walking in the leaves, like I mean,
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: probably a foot or two from my head. Yeah, and
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: they're just happened to be from there, kind of perpendicular
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: going out a giant you know, I don't know. At
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: one end it was probably eighteen inches. At the far
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: end it was three ft diameter log that took days
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: to shoot it over. The main thing were supposed to
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: talk about, Oh yeah, we got thing. Yeah, and then
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: I gotta get it was so important I put it
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: down at the bottom of my notes. I gotta get
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: a closing thought too, but we'll get to that later.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: So did it happen, cal did it happen? Well, well,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: damn sure, better happened now everybody's talking about it. So
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: what happened last night take it away is the word
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: has been spread that when and there, there's all sorts
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: that you know, everybody likes, say political feater these days,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: but it's all that's that's what they do back there,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: So it's it's not nobody should be shocked. Um, the
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: word is out that when Congress returns from its recess
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: for the Memorial Day break more Memorial Day weekend break,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: Mitch McConnell is going to lead with the Great American
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: Outdoors Act, which is something that we've talked about a
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: bunch and it had a bunch of steam, and I,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: for one, was was very concerned on how this was
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: gonna fair with um, you know, all of a sudden
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: getting slapped with this pandemic life and COVID and UH
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: bailouts UH around COVID, and we went from you know,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: economy kicking ass and everybody's got jobs and now we
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: have some serious unemployment in the country for the first Yeah,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and I treated just like my Turkey season. It did.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: It did. It went went from the number one priority
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: to boy, I hope I get around to that. Can
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: you give it a first give the cliff note version
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: of what it is. Yeah, so the Great American Outdoors
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: Act is how bills get past these days. It's not
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: an individual bill, it's it's a package. UM that the
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: major points of this package, UH, Land and Water Conservation Fund,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: which has just been man if you've ever been interested
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: in conservation. Land Water Conservation Fund is something that's been
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: talked about forever and it's been a battle. But that
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: is a fund that basically takes a tax off of
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: offshore oil and gas revenues and earmarks that cash specifically
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: for access programs, conservation programs UM and then individual states
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: and agencies and UM and uh, you know it's available
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: for private land as well. Can't apply for l w
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: CF matching grants for projects UM. And some people dog
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: on it with this like horrible argument of like, yeah,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: you know that really nice bike path that uh is
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: in my little tiny small town that's l w CF funds.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: What does that do for me? Um? It gaus people
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: that you live around never really nice bike path? Yeah,
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: I mean like really like dragging, Like was it like
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: they should have divided up the money by everybody in
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the community and given everyone like a dollar. Yeah, it's
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: just like questions like he doesn't this guy right, but um,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: lots of city parks, UM, some boat ramps, all sorts
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: of different types of access. But I once heard, I
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: don't know that's true or NOTO. I once heard that
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: every county in America has had an LWCF project. Boy,
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I don't know if I would lay it on the
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: line to say every county but you and mind, Alaska
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: doesn't do counties. Every absolutely every state, no, no question whatsoever. Um. So,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: but there's always been this battle to have UM both
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: LWCF authorized and funded at the same time, which is
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: something that we've really struggled with. UM. LWCF is in
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: the Great American Outdoors Act. Um, We're sorry. Funding full
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: and permanent funding of LWCF is in the Great American Outdoor.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Is that that's where the LWCF then gets super complicated.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: It's like there's authorizing it. Yeah. So basically like Cal's like,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: hey man, I want I wanna buy pack of gum,
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: and I'm like, uh, yes, you can buy a pack
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: of gum, and its like bunny to mind to buy
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: the gump And then you would say, well, that's great,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: and that's not my department cal has been all the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: rise to buy gum, but doesn't have the money to
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: buy gum. So then I'd go to Joannice as the
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: chair of the House Appropriations Committee, and I'd say, Yannice,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Steve over here has told me that it's okay to
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: buy a pack of gum. And the pack of gum
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: is a really nice pack of gum, and it costs
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: this much. That's what I've come to ask you for.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: And Joannice would say, is it really that nice pack
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: of gum? Do you really need? No? We could we
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: can improve this because I say, you say, um, I
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: need to buy a pack of gum. Uh, in my
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: budgets a dollar, I'm allowed to spend a dollar on
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: going And I'm like, yes, I authorized you spend dollar
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: on gum. Then you go to Honest and say, well
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: I need that dollar because I've been authorized spend a
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: dollar and com yeah, it's like I get ten cents. Yeah,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: it's like a lot of people need a dollar kid um.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: So yes, LBC have full impermanent funding is in the
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: Great American out or Is Act. The other thing and
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: this is when they say full full funding is nine
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: million year, right, But that that is for these specific projects,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: which just gave me that money, um that people have
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: to apply for. So it's not yeah, it's I mean,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: it's it's a cool thing. It has helped everyone, whether
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: you're in a major city center or not, or very
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: rural town. But they do there's a lot of checks
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: and balances to make sure that that money gets spread
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: around so that every county thing may very well be true.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: Uh you know that there's just a lot of counties
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: out there. So but a lot of other stuff has
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: been rolled into the Act, right. Yes. The major thing
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: that I think is pretty darn neat is again it's
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: kind of a weird twist because of the way the
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: economy has gone and the jobless rate in America has gone.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Here since people were starting to be like, oh boy,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: Great American Outdoors Act could have some steam. You know.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: President Trump was tweeting about l WCF, which is part
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: of the Great American Outdoors Act. Um. Uh. Senator Dan's
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: here in Montana. Senator Cory Gardner uh in Colorado have
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: uh you know co signed um uh, you know co
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: sponsored the Great American Outdoors Act. All this like good stuff.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Fifty three co signers in addition to the first seven
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: you want to be confusing books. So there's fifty nine
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: co signers officially, um, which is which is a big deal. Uh,
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: a lot of Republicans and Democrats on there. And then uh,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: but like I said, this odd thing going from the
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: steam the momentum of like okay, this could happen, and
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: then all of a sudden it's like, oh my god,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: we need like really funding in this pandemic. And it
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: just made me very nervous. Tax revenues are going to
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: go down, and then the oil and then oil leases
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: are going to go down. Yes, Um, well there is
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: funding in the Grand American Outdoors Act for this huge
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: national parks backlog and a lot of folks and I
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: think you were kind of one of them. You're like
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: national parks. I don't play that much in national parks
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: because that's where all the people go. Um, well there's
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: a big push too. Then say, well, listen, we can
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: put a lot of the funding towards national parks backlog,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: but we also have maintenance backlogs on blm US, Fish
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: and Wildlife, Ground, Bureau of Reclamation, UM, Bureau of Indian Education,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: and so now, uh, there is dedicated funding to address
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: National Park Service still gets the kind of lion's share,
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: but then US four A service, BLM, Bureau of Reclamation,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Bureau of Indian Education. So, uh, wasn't it that the
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: service gets and then the rest of it was split up?
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I think five us F S five five. I think
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: that's right. I think that's right. Yeah, specifically for maintenance.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: But then the neat thing when I keep going back
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: to the job side of this is, uh, you know,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: we have changed from like the U. S four Service
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: having a crew to do everything to where they hire
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: out contractors to do a lot of this maintenance. National
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Park Service the exact same way, US Fish and Wildlife
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: same way. So it's like infrastructure spending. Yeah, and we
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: have a bunch of dedicated funding in this that will
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: be paying contractors to do this work. So there's a
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: lot of bill jobs in this thing, which the timing
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: of that with what's going on right now is is
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: a really cool thing. So, but we're still at this
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: moment talking about something that really should probably happen on Tuesday,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: so sorry next month rather um. Yeah. So Mitch McConnell,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: he has said he's bringing it out when we come
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: back in session after the break. Um, there is a
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: little uncertainty because there's not this supermajority that can carry
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: the vote with through a detail. Right. Um. The you know,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: this has been controversial stuff because you know, people are antipers.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: You know, some people are anti spending on public lands.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: But the other kind of interesting thing here is one
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: of the things that has been very consistent for folks
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: in this weird time of getting some of our freedoms,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: like hey, you really shouldn't do that in the time
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: of COVID for the general welfare everybody, well, one thing
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: everybody for the most part it's been able to do
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: is go outside and exercise outside. UH. And a lot
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: of people have now found a renewed passion for being outside.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: If you talk to our state agencies, with which again
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: I've been doing a lot participation across the board in fishing, hunting, camping,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: outdoor recreation has been adding an all time high, UH.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: If you want to get back into it. My favorite
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: subject tag allocation. I was talking to my friends in
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: Idaho and they're like, oh, ma'am, UH would have been
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: real hired to draw a tag this year because we've
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: had record breaking submissions for UH draw tags. Yeah, I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: heard the same thing. I heard an interesting number yesterday.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: UM Minnesota year to date their fishing license sales up.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: No way, Wow, that's scary. Are getting out again. The
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: stage is set. That's really something. So the so we
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: need to do this thing, man, because you got people
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: want to get out. We gotta be ready for him,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: even the National park people. Yeah, and like this is
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: something that has a bunch of jobs built in. It's
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: got a bunch of needs that we need to take
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: care of built in. If you think there's too many
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: people out there recreating, with more people out buying fishing licenses,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: uh LWCF, you know, take some time, but it can
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: help spread out people by providing more access. There's a
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: lot of really good stuff in here, and it takes
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: so much freaking work and time to get one of
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: these packages that you know is not uh a defense
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: contract or all these other things that seem to take
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: take precedence UH to the floor. You know, people are saying,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: call your representatives, call your representatives, call them, throw them
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: into a stranglehold, man. Yeah, just just explain to them
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: what do you do? Yeah, come on, how much time
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you spend out there, how much money you spend out there,
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: taking the family outside. It's a big deal. And the
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: times now stay. If you want to sit on your stuff,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: uh and not talk about conservation stuff or or or
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: pretending like you care, just make make one phone call
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: on this and then you can be like, Yeah, that
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: biggest thing that's ever come around in our lifetime. I
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: was a part of that. I made a phone call
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: and told vote for it. That would be a good time,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: still would be help even though around the cusps, but
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: still be helpful, just to give it the extra umph. Yeah, yep,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: you can go uh and check out the actual bill.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: It'll tell you who's already CO signed. Um, yeah you can.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: You can your guys out on there. You got your
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: woman's honor. You can give them the heat. You can
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: give them heat. But also call those people that av
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: CO signed and say thank you. They need to hear
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: that stuff too. They never hear thank you enough that
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: you know, people in Michigan are showing up at the
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: state capital armed because they want to get some of
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: the restrictions eased. Yea, how can people don't show up
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: armed about the LWCF down there? Man? I had too
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: many acronyms, I guess I don't know. Yeah. Um, so yeah,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: this this is a big one. Call Call your representative,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: tell them you want them to pass the Great American
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: Outdoors Act. Do you feel cal you're a cynical man. Yep,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: that's true. Um, you're a skeptical man and a cynical man.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: My favorite quote being, Uh, skepticism is the chast t
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: of the intellect. But you're a cynical man. Do you
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: feel that calling your representatives? Are you just twiddling your
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: thumbs when you call your representative? Scale No, No, I
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: don't think so. I don't think it has the impact
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: that you want it to. Like I feel oftentimes, Uh,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: even if you have your ducks in her own you
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: tell this awesome story and and you make that AID
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: on the on the other end of the phone, Uh,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: cry over the for the sympathy for your plight. That
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: aids just gonna mark another notch in the for against
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: column and move on to the next regardless of Yeah, yeah,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: like the intensity of the plea you might not matter,
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: might not matter. That's what I heard. I was asking
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: sort of a hypothetical question or not a leading I
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: know what kind of question. The question we kind of
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: already know the answer to it. But I've talked to representatives,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: um who have said on some issues where it's not
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: like a huge on some issues where it's not just
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: become like a big party thing or doesn't become like
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: super partisan polarizing into partisan way and you have to
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: like go with things and it just is, you know,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: just some issue that doesn't become overly politicized that they
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: will literally calls and letters and they run a tally
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: and it's like that your constituents seen to be falling
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: very cleanly and favoritess and it's like got it yep,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: that's all go yep. Um. Yeah, so it's still like
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: good old stuff like that still happens. Yeah. I mean
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: I've written letter emails. Um. You know, form letters are
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: super easy, but it's not much harder at all to
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: just write an individual letter that isn't attached to a
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: form letter. I think that is more impactful. Um. But man,
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: a phone call is so fast, so efficient, that's what
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: those folks like. It's easier to make the phone call.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Oh sure, they're always real polite. Oh thanks for calling
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: and glad to hear you're you know, involved. Okay, bye, Yeah,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: they're gonna ask you where you live, you know, because
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: they want to know if you're in there zone or not,
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: you know. But I mean, it's it's it's something everybody's
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: gotta be a part of. If not this issue, something else.
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: If you're listening to this show, this is damn sure
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: your issue. So get off your stuff and call great
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: an email and be a part of the process. I
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: got strangle hold little stuck in my head right now.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Before our lives showing Detroit got canceled. You know what
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: we had planned for it. I'm sorry postponed, not canceled, postpone,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: and we'll still do it anyway. But my buddy from
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: high school, John Merchant, he likes to play guitar, and
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: when we were little kids here, not kids like high schoolers,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: he always, uh like you could play all the nugent songs,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: you know, And um, we're gonna have John come out
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: with a guitar at the live show and we're gonna
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: do nugent name that tune and John I was gonna
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: play opening licks to see who can name the song
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: fastest way and go tango, and then we'll have a
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: green tree and an accent in there. Uh are we
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: doing concluders here. Okay, So I got a good one
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: that's been bugging me. Um alright, so you guys got
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: I'll make this real quick, and it's just out for
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: everybody to judge. Here moment, you're gonna say something that's
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: been bugging you in and I'm going to judge it. Yep, Well,
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: I mean you gotta. It's a scenario, right, So, Oklahoma
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: suburbs of Oklahoma City. These two kids are out fishing
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: in their neighborhood pond, which is legal to do so legal.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: It is legal to fish the neighborhood pod. And they're
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: fishing for bass in the neighborhood pond. Uh. And they
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: want to say they're somewhere in the twelve fourteen year
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: old range, the horrible age. Yeah for full of miss chieff. Right. Sure,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: it was a lot of trouble happens in there. I
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: caught a lot of large mouth bass in them mirrors.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: Vehicle shows up, guide, an adult man steps out, walks
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: to the water's edge with a cast net, uses the
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: cast net to pull approximately three pound bass off of bed,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: and then drops that bass in the bucket next to him.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: The kids know that this is illegal, and they decide
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: to go up and talk to the adult and just
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: let him know that this is an illegal activity. And
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: he begins to cuss the kids out, you know, basically
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: like mind your own business. And at that point the
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: kids call fishing game fishing wildlife. Uh huh I should
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: have been talking, yeah, student, little buggers and that. Uh.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: Then they say, hey, just so you know, you know,
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: we called fishing wildlife. They even went as far to
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: explain to the guy before they called fishing wildlife that
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: you can keep a bass with a rod and reel.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: So they're like, if you're really interested in keeping a bass,
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: you can keep one if you catch it with a rod.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: Real mr, Yeah, just fish for him. Yeah. Uh So
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: then now this guy's real irate and he's still cussing
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: at these at these kids. Um. And then uh drives off,
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: thinks better of it, jumps out, runs down to the
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: water's edge, throws the bass back, continues to cuss at
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: the kids. Uh, jumps in the vehicle and drives off. Uh.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: And then later on, fishing Game catches up with him,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: writes some a ticket, which he he he pays in full. Um.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: I was just sending these kids something. What was the
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: ticket for illegal means a take I think illegal casting
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: out in bass? Yeah uh um. So I notice in
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: the the video footage the kids wearing a first light hat.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: Oh really yeah? Uh care him? Is his name? K A.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: R U M and his buddy writer were the two kids,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: and uh, I reach out to the father, right. I
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: don't want to reach out to the fourteen year old
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: kid without talking to his folks first. Um, and the
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: guys like, hey, thank you so much for reaching out.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: There's some folks on social media that are calling the
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: kids a bunch of names. They're taking it pretty hard.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: And then some of them names for what for turning
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: the guy in? It was the guy that the guy
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: thrown the bass back in the lake, they would have
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: turned him in. Yeah yeah. The part of the concert. Uh.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: Conversation I had with the dad uh was fun though too,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: because he's like, yeah, they're taking it pretty hard. They're
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: I mean, they're out fishing right now. But so the
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: kids like their fishing and they're protecting their fishing horn.
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: And I just wanted to throw that story out and
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: see what what the general sentiment was around this table
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: as to uh, just just the whole thing as far
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: as like, I think we should send those kids some stuff. Man.
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: But it's a job well done. I mean they gave
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: an adult. They're checking out there, looking out for the
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: resource man the predator husbands is praying and they're pretty
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: educated on the whole system, which is impressive. You know. Um,
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: they're acting more responsible than a lot of adults would
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: have acted. And if the story played out like you're
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: talking about, if the dude had been like oh man, dude, sorry,
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: throw the bass back, we'll be talking about Well, it
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: seems like that guy had like a system, like you
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: don't just run out of your car with a cast
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: that like huh, I wonder what will happen? Like he's
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: got it coming. Man, it sounds like you might have
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: been doing some bucket biology. Oh yeah, that's interested stock
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: in his own ponds somewhere else. Um, I we should
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: send some of those kids. He had a first light hit. Yeah,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: I can't find any faults or any holes like with
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: the story rating the dude out, But like again I
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: wasn't there. He right, so I can see like, oh,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: it's bad to wrap somebody out. I can see someone
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: making that argument. But if if the dudes is getting
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: testy with them. What are they supposed to do? Fight them? Well?
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: And that's things like this is a full blown adult.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: And you look at these these kids, and I hope
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: you guys don't get embarrassed on this one. But they're like,
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: you know, a little skinny havn't quite uh you know,
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: beefed up yet. I haven't either, Yeah, you know, Steve
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: hasn't either. But and then the other cool thing, the
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: cool part of this is they're a good Samaritan steps forward.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: Uh grogis I think is this guy's name? Um? And
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: he recalls his own terrible experience with an adult fishing
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: as a kid, where some guy lost his temper and
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: he recalls not ever even wanting to go back to
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: that whole lake. And so he got a hold these
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: two kids bottom uh Oklahoma lifetime fishing license a piece, yeah,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: and uh a gift card to Cabellas or bass Pro
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: or something. Yes. Yeah. And that's the way you should act,
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: not tormenting these kids because they did the right thing,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: especially if you like to fish. That's interesting, that's a lovely,
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: heartwarming story. Is that. I just don't think it was
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: a concluder. It's not. It doesn't fit into usually what
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: a concluder is like another talking point. Yeah, I know,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: I just wanted to hear what you guys, have you
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: ever been like watch this. I'll be like, uh, man,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I just want to say, cal that that stuff you
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: were talking about earlier. Um, that warms my heart, buddy.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: That's well, I don't have a concluder. I like the
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: story cows a good way to end the day. Oh man, Yeah,
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: I wish we had a great uplifting story like that
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: on the show Man. That's like I asked a few questions. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: I told him. I wrote this up on the Weekend
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: review podcast that Cols we can review coals. We can
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: review best thing on the internet. I'm like, just type
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: that and you'll pullp Cols. We can review those those
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: Uh yeah, those boys can fish with me. Uh last
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: quick thing listening? We else got any that I've come
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: to a thing on puffballs? Mm hmm. I'm like, it's
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: hard to see something in the woods it's edible and
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: not pick it. I saw it, I grabbed it. Man,
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: But you're not having good luck with him. I'm almost
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: gonna I have yet to eat in my life, and
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: I've made a fair number of them if you have
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: to eat a puffball. Rouse there night we're eating those
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: morals and you're like, damn, those are good. Dah, they're good.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: Hand in the woods Man. That's good. It's so good.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Bleats so good. Yeah, what are the orange ones? Sweet mother?
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: It's just good. You're patting yourself on the back. Good
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: job picking that out. Every time every time I eat
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: a puff ball, every time someone picks a puff ball,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: every time someone makes me a puffball pizza, it doesn't
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: matter what it is. I'm always like, yeah, yeah, for sure,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: it's edible and it's not bad, but it's not bad. Yeah,
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: you don't have to pick them up, morrel. You're not
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: gonna walk away from They're just like very complimentary to
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: whatever you're making, like on a burger in the Steaks
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: us something like that, but like you're not gonna eat
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: it on its own as an appetizer. We found two
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: giant puff balls. I'd say not the size of a
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: normal head, but the size of cow's head. I got
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: that bigger, smaller than a normal No, like a puff
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: ball the size of spencer's head. Now that's a puff ball.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: That's a big puff but a puffball the size of
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: like cow's heads, about the size of a softball. Yeah,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: puff ball like that. But what I can't remember it
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: was it had like this one had met metallic kind
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: of Brody picked a nice one, but then we let
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: it sit a couple of days and it got a
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: little s out, but it wasn't like it's the white shot.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: But then but then me, my boy picked one that
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: was like firm, nice, like any puff ball is edible,
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Like any puffballs edible. If you cut it open um
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: and it's white inside, it's fine. Eventually they turn darker, darker,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: darker black, and then you can squeeze him and you know,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: the spores shoot up in the air. It looks like
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: a smoke bomb at Fourth of July, but coming on
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: white cutt into slices. I can't remember what we did.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: We wanted to, like, I think we just put it
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: on foil on a grill shipload of olive oil, which
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: makes anything be okay. And in the end it was
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: like you couldn't. Kids didn't like it, kind of pasty
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: in the middle. It's like tofuie. Yeah, kind of dune
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: with those sons of bitches. That's all folks. Come on,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: I got oh no, go ahead, give the counterpoint. It's
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: like one of those shows like point counterpoint. Oh no,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: I'm I'm, I'm with you. I'm I think I think
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: puff balls for burgers are aware of a hat because
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: I just do like garlic butter, and then I have
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: the puff balls all sliced up in there, and he
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: just laid on top of burger and just laying on
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: top of burger, and and nobody and a lot of
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: times I'll do bacon burgers and then be when folks
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: aren't looking, I'll be transferring that bacon grease into the
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: butter dish. Also, nobody's walking away from one of those
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: puffball mushrooms, right, It's like and it winds up being good,
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: but like, okay, let me ask you why though, Oh,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: I mean, because you've doctored it all up, I winds
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: up being like fun to eat the mushroom. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah. I think their their nickname is like
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: the breakfast mushroom, because what you should do with the
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: puff ball is like tossing an omelet, toss it with eggs,
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: put in a burrito something like that. How can you
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: say that its nickname is the breakfast mushroom? But then
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: say that it's not a widely held belief that pine
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: squirrels bite the knots off all the squirrels. You got
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: me there? Maybe like one person called it the breakfast mushroom.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: I don't know. I love putting the truth about breakfast mushrooms.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: Are you typing in breakfast mushroom, Junie, I'm gonna type
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: in puffball mushroom nicknames. See what happens, Spencer's It's gonna
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: be all right. Who else got a concluder? I'm good.
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: I like Cal's story. I can't. Yeah, I'm sorry to
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: top it. I wanna make a defense in my breakfast
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: mushroom thing here real quick. That's a good concluder from
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: from while I have another concluder yet, so this one
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: doesn't count this up? Uh? From the book Wild About Mushrooms,
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: the cookbook of the Micological Society of San Francisco, they
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: say some people refer to puffballs as breakfast mushrooms because
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: they blend so well with eggs. Okay, that seems definitive
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: enough to me. Okay, so you're my concluder. Was that's wrong?
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: I'm convinced that a recent episode had the best, most
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: unexpected thing ever said on it that I heard over
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: Quarantine recent episode of what of the Meat Eater podcast
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: this very show, Yes is something you said? No, no, no, no,
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: I've been I've been. I've been catching over here something
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: I read on a blood Spencer new the best most
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: unexpected thing I've ever heard on the Meat Eater podcast. Um,
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: I've been catching up Quarantine and I've thought about this
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: once a day, I swear to you since I heard it,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: but I haven't seen you guys because of social distancing
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: to bring it up. But in episode two eighteen, Kevin Murphy,
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I was talking to you guys, and if I were
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: introducing one of you, if I were like introducing Brodie
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: to somebody who didn't know Brodie, I'd be like, this
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: is my buddy, Brodie. He just moved here from Colorado.
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: I'd be like, you know that a little shi, Yeah,
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: like this is my buddy. Honest. Uh he used to
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: guide elk hunters something like that. Like that's that's just
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: like a pretty normal introduction. Kevin Murphy blindsided you guys
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: with something that I think you were so caught off
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: guard you didn't even address it. But Kevin Murphy said, uh,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: does he listen to this podcast. Oh, probably not. I
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: wouldn't be surprised to here he does not. Okay, well,
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: you're gonna need to reach out anyway. He's to like
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: put a ball on this. But he said something about
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: that was with my buddy Raymond, and Raymond doesn't let
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: me go into gentlemen's clubs in foreign countries. And then
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: he just moved on from there. Never never brought it
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: back to that. It had nothing to do with the
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: rest of the two hours that you guys talked, But
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: that was his footnote on his buddy rain Like, if
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: you want to know what kind of guy Raymond, Yes,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: he does not let you go into gentleman's clubs and
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: foreign countries. So yeah, you're like, okay, so he's he's coolheaded,
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: he thinks ahead, he doesn't get carried away in the moment,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: I was waiting for something to come back to that
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: story or like how is this relevant? And it never happened,
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: and it it's bothered me because I tell him telling you,
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: I thought about it every single day. I can see
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: that a little bit because I certainly caught that when
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: he said it, and the thing that came to mind
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: to me I was like, well, Kevin, to me, that
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: says that you were on your way to a gentleman's
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: club in a foreign country and your body thought better
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: of it and he stopped you. You know it. So
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: I kind of kind of said a little bit about Kevin,
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: which I don't know if he got a service background,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: merchant mery and or something like that. I just want
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: to know what inspired like that specific footnote. There has
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: to be some sort of back and ask him and
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: you can report back to us. Do you even recall
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: that being said, Steve? No, But like I feel like
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: I'm trying to, like if I have someone on, sometimes
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: i'll have someone and I'll go back and listen because
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: I'm trying to do a lot of things in my
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: head hosting m HM. And the thing with Kevin two
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: man he uh he uh has the gift of gab
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: and it flows thought to the next and one idea
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: to the next pretty quickly. Yeah. Yeah, well we can
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: follow up on that keeping you up at night. Huh.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: Speaking of the this is you got one too? Oh
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: you still got a concluder though I gave it. I
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: gave Spencer month, so you got one. But I'm gonna
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: do a story for a concluder about going to gentleman's
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: clubs in foreign countries. I Uh, one time I was
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: working on this magazine story and I had to go
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: to the Santiago and Chile and I just started dating
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: my wife and I brought her with me, and I uh,
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: we had hired a guy I needed needed to hire,
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: like a translator and someone to help out with stuff. Um,
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: And so I said, man, I really want to get
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: a cup of coffee, and he said, well, how about
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: a coffee with legs? And I thought he meant like
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: a strong coffee. So I'm like, yeah, what other kind
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: is there? Right? Or whatever the hell I said. I'm like,
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: I would like that's what I thought he meant. But no,
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: what do you mean means? Is he takes us to
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: this like underground arcade in Santiago and it's uh coffee
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: shops that our staffed by naked women. So, and it's
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: businessmen doing business meetings. It's black, there's black lights. It's
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: full of like businessmen at eleven in the morning having
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: meetings and you're being waited on and served coffee by
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: nude women. And so I'm with my wife and so
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: I'm trying very hard to not look at anything. I'm
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: just like not looking at anything. All three of you
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: want to get a coffee. There, Me, the translator, and
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: my wife are sitting very awkwardly, and he's like, isn't
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: it great? Isn't it great? You know? And I'm sitting
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: there like I'm not looking, I'm not doing anything. And
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: I had my notebook out because I was taking some notes.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: And eventually my wife took my notebook and she drew
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: a picture in it. And I looked and it was
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: a woman. It was a picture of a woman holding
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: a pair of scissors and a man's scrolled them gentleman's
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: clubs in foreign countries. Man, go ahead, Johnny, I'll let you.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: I'll let it end on that I was. I didn't
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: have one. I gave a dispenser. I said, what was yours?
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: H No, you said that was the thought. The puff
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: ball thing was me doing a follow up. The concluder
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: was that Kevin Murphy had the greatest most unexpected line
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: your podcast history. Okay, Phil helps out here now, now
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: Phil the engineer, please provide a concluder so we can
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: wrap her up. Yet one minute, Well, I was just
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: gonna I was actually gonna try to cut you guys
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: off because I thought the picture of your wife drew
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: into the laughter. Bring the music up. That's that's the
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: end of the podcast. Go ahead and do that, Phil,
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: I'll do it. Is it too late? No? Can we
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: talk about this and then have that happened and you
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: can we can talk about its going to hear what
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: we're talking about. Let's say, let's you played this and
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: then did what you would have done right and show
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: that you were right. Sound okay, I would do that.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Now back up and do what you would have done right. Okay,
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: here we go. Here comes men, folks. It was a
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: picture of a woman holding a pair of scissors and
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: a man scrolled them Gentlemen's clubs and Foreign Conscience Man
