- 0:41Today we are exploring the world of apex predators.
- 0:44An apex predator is an animal at the top of its food chain in a
- 0:48particular place. That means it does not have
- 0:51another animal that regularly hunts it once it is full grown
- 0:55and healthy. Apex predators help keep
- 0:57ecosystems balanced by controlling the numbers of other
- 1:01animals. When they do their jobs, plants,
- 1:03smaller animals, and even habitats like forests and coral
- 1:07reefs can stay healthy. To understand apex predators, it
- 1:21helps to know what a food web is.
- 1:23A food web shows who eats what. In nature, plants use sunlight
- 1:27to make energy. Plant eating animals called
- 1:31herbivores eat the plants. Meat eating animals called
- 1:34carnivores eat other animals. Omnivores eat both plants and
- 1:38animals. At the very top are the apex
- 1:41predators. They are not the only hunters,
- 1:44but they are the top hunters in their homes.
- 1:47Decomposers such as fungi and bacteria breakdown what is left
- 1:51after animals and plants die, putting nutrients back into the
- 1:55soil and water. All these parts connect to make
- 1:58a living system. Apex predators live in many
- 2:02habitats in the ocean. Great white sharks and orcas are
- 2:06top hunters on land. Lions in certain parts of Africa
- 2:11and tigers and some Asian forests are apex predators in
- 2:15the sky. Golden Eagles and harpy eagles
- 2:18are top hunters of birds and small mammals in their ranges.
- 2:22In rivers and wetlands, crocodiles and alligators are
- 2:26apex predators in cold seas. Polar bears are top hunters on
- 2:31ice, focusing mainly on seals, each of these animals has
- 2:35features that help them find food and avoid danger.
- 2:38Even though they have few natural enemies, apex predators
- 2:42have special adaptations. Many have excellent senses.
- 2:47Owls can hear very small sounds made by mice.
- 2:50Sharks can detect tiny electrical signals made by
- 2:53mussels of fish. Cats, such as tigers have eyes
- 2:58that see well in low light. Many have strong bodies.
- 3:02Crocodiles have powerful jaws. Eagles have sharp talons.
- 3:07Some move quietly, such as big cats that step softly.
- 3:11Others hunt together. Wolves can work as a pack to
- 3:14find and surround prey, each member helping the group.
- 3:18Here is a fun fact, some apex predators are not the biggest
- 3:23animals around, but they're still at the top because of
- 3:25their skills and the role they play.
- 3:28A Jaguar is not the largest cat in the world, but in many
- 3:31tropical forests it is the top hunter because it is strong,
- 3:35quiet, and able to climb and swim in the sea.
- 3:39Orcas are not the biggest whales, but they hunt
- 3:42cooperatively and use smart tactics which puts them at the
- 3:45top in many oceans. Did you know that scientists
- 3:49study how apex predators shape the environment without changing
- 3:52it physically themselves? When top hunters keep herbivore
- 3:56numbers from getting too high, plants can grow better.
- 3:59This can increase shade along stream edges, keep soil in
- 4:03place, and even affect how much water stays clean and cool for
- 4:07fish. This is one reason many parks
- 4:10and reserves protect apex predators.
- 4:13Healthy top hunters often mean a healthier food web.
- 4:16Here is our first question for you.
- 4:18Which bird is the fastest in a hunting dive, reaching speeds
- 4:22over 200 mph? The answer is the peregrine
- 4:29Falcon. It tucks its wings and dives
- 4:32toward birds in Medair, using strong eyesight to track its
- 4:36target. In many cities, peregrines nest
- 4:39on tall buildings and hunt pigeons and starlings.
- 4:42They show how apex predators can live near people when there is
- 4:46enough food and safe nesting space.
- 4:49Yes or no Question. Do orcas have different call
- 4:52patterns, sometimes called dialects in different family
- 4:55groups and can young orcas learn them?
- 5:00Yes, different pods use unique sets of calls, and young orcas
- 5:05learn them by listening. This social learning helps
- 5:08groups coordinate hunting and stay together.
- 5:11It also shows that behavior, not just body parts, can make an
- 5:15apex predator successful. Let's look at how being an apex
- 5:19predator depends on place and time.
- 5:21A large adult tiger is an apex predator in a rainforest.
- 5:26A young tiger cub is not because it still depends on adults and
- 5:30could be at risk from other predators.
- 5:32A healthy adult shark is an apex predator in open water.
- 5:36If a predator gets injured or sick, it may not be able to hunt
- 5:40well and can lose its top position.
- 5:42In practice, even if it still has few natural enemies, apex
- 5:47predators do more than hunt. Many will also scavenge, which
- 5:51means they eat animals that are already dead.
- 5:54Lions, tigers, and sharks will sometimes scavenge when the
- 5:58chance appears. This matters because scavenging
- 6:01recycles nutrients and reduces waste.
- 6:03In nature, apex predators also compete with other predators.
- 6:08For example, a leopard and a hyena might both want the same
- 6:12food, and their choices can shift depending on who is
- 6:15around. That competition creates a
- 6:18balance so that no single species takes over every
- 6:22resource. Here is a second question.
- 6:24In a kelp forest, which animal do sea otters eat?
- 6:28That helps protect the kelp from being overgrazed.
- 6:34Sea otters eat sea urchins. When otters keep urchin numbers
- 6:38in check, kelp forest stay thick and tall.
- 6:41Kelp provide shelter for fish, crabs, and many other creatures.
- 6:46In places where otters declined in the past, urchins multiplied
- 6:50and mowed down kelp. When otters returned, kelp often
- 6:54recovered. Now a yes or no question Can
- 6:58apex predators help plants grow by controlling the number of
- 7:01plant eating animals even though predators do not eat plants
- 7:05themselves? Yes.
- 7:10This is called a trophic cascade.
- 7:12For example, when top hunters reduce browsing by deer or
- 7:16grazing by other herbivores, young trees and shrubs can
- 7:20survive, which then helps birds nest and insects find food.
- 7:25Apex predators also have daily routines.
- 7:28Some hunt mostly at night, such as many big cats.
- 7:32Others are active in daylight, such as many eagles and Hawks.
- 7:36Some, such as sharks, can be active at different times
- 7:40depending on the tides and the movements of their prey.
- 7:43Weather matters too. After heavy rain, river
- 7:46predators may move to calmer pools.
- 7:49In strong winds, birds of prey adjust their flight paths to
- 7:53glide and save energy. Here is a third question.
- 7:57Which large shark can live in both salt water and fresh water
- 8:01for short periods by adjusting the salt levels inside its body?
- 8:08The bull shark. It has special kidneys and other
- 8:11features that let it swim far up rivers and then return to the
- 8:15sea. This ability helps it find
- 8:17different hunting grounds and avoid stronger ocean currents
- 8:21when needed. Did you know that some apex
- 8:24predators use tools? Sea otters sometimes use small
- 8:27rocks to crack open shellfish on their chests while floating on
- 8:31their backs. This behavior lets them eat
- 8:33tough prey that many other animals leave alone.
- 8:37Another example involves chimpanzees using sticks to fish
- 8:40for termites. Although chimpanzees are not
- 8:43apex in all places because large cats and other predators can
- 8:47threaten them, tool use shows flexibility and problem solving.
- 8:52Apex predators can live near people when habitats overlap.
- 8:56In many cities, red tailed Hawks nest on buildings and hunt
- 9:00squirrels and pigeons. In some suburbs, coyotes manage
- 9:04rodent populations. In coastal towns, Ospreys nest
- 9:08on platforms and catch fish in nearby bays.
- 9:12People can help by keeping wildlife wild, securing trash
- 9:16and giving animals space. Wildlife managers study these
- 9:20interactions to reduce conflicts and keep both people and animals
- 9:24safe. Even apex predators face
- 9:26challenges. Habitat loss, pollution and
- 9:30climate change can reduce prey or alter hunting grounds.
- 9:34Some species get caught accidentally in fishing gear.
- 9:37Others lose nesting sites. Conservation groups work with
- 9:41communities to protect nesting cliffs, create wildlife
- 9:44corridors, and set fishing rules that reduce bycatch.
- 9:49Tagging programs track movements so we learn where animals travel
- 9:53and where they need protection. Let's recap the key ideas.
- 9:57An apex predator sits at the top of its food chain in a given
- 10:01place. It helps maintain balance by
- 10:03managing prey numbers, which can lead to healthier plants and
- 10:07habitats. Apex predators have strong
- 10:10adaptations, including sharp senses, physical tools such as
- 10:14talons and teeth, and smart behaviors such as teamwork and
- 10:18learning. They live in many environments,
- 10:21from forests and grasslands to oceans and cities.
- 10:24Some, such as the peregrine Falcon, reach record speeds.
- 10:28Others, such as orcas, use group calls and strategies.
- 10:33Sea otters protect kelp forests by eating sea urchins.
- 10:37Bull sharks can move between fresh and salt water.
- 10:40Apex predators sometimes scavenge, compete with other
- 10:44predators, and adjust their routines based on time of day
- 10:48and weather. Keeping apex predators and their
- 10:50habitats healthy helps the entire food web, from the
- 10:54smallest plants to the largest animals.
- 11:02Thanks for listening and keep your curiosity active.
- 11:05The next time you see a bird soaring, read about ocean life
- 11:08or learn about forests and rivers.
- 11:11Every piece of the food web matters and understanding apex
- 11:15predators helps us understand the whole living world.
