- 1:00Hey, y'all, welcome to today's First of all, if you hear any
- 1:03banging and booming, it's a beautiful late June afternoon, and we have one
- 1:11of my favorite things in the world, which is a thunderstorm. I love
- 1:17summer thunderstorms. It's just, you know, it's hot and the rain comes
- 1:22in and it cools everything off. I love to sit on my porch and
- 1:26just watch it rain and just enjoy that cool breeze. It's absolutely one of
- 1:32my favorite things. To quote the movie one of my favorite movies, by
- 1:36the way, old brother Art, Now, I'll sweet summer rain like God's
- 1:40own mercy. It is a glorious thing on one of those hot, baking
- 1:47summer days in North Carolina when you hear the rain moving across the mountain and
- 1:53the breeze comes up and the leaves start to shake a little bit, and
- 1:57then suddenly it just boom. The bottom falls down and these torrents and gushes
- 2:01of rain and lightnings popping, and it's truly, I don't think there's anything
- 2:07quite like it. I've been at the beach in thunderstorms. I've been,
- 2:12I've lived in five different states. Oh my gosh. When I was in
- 2:16Athens, Georgia, those thunderstorms would come up, pop up in the blink
- 2:21of a knife. They can pop up thunderstorms, and I mean it would
- 2:24rain so hard, the streets would flood, and I mean literally you'd be
- 2:28hydro planning and you just have to pull over for a while. There's just
- 2:31something about being, you know, in the mountains, in the woods.
- 2:37It's just a totally different thing, and it's just magical. I guess I've
- 2:40said enough about that. But let's get into today's show. We're gonna start
- 2:49at least hopefully finish with Saint Justin Martyr on why Christians no longer followed Jewish
- 2:55Torah law. Saint Justin Martyr is a very interesting figure. He's considered to
- 3:00be like the father of all the apologists, those who explained the Catholic faith.
- 3:07He was a Greek philosopher. He studied all the schools of philosophy and
- 3:14then found the truth he was seeking in Christianity. He essentially memorized the entire
- 3:22Old Testament and was very conversant with the Gospels as they were presented at the
- 3:29time. The New Testament. Of course, it wasn't finished yet. The
- 3:32Bible had not been completed when he began to debate the Greek philosophers, and
- 3:40he began to debate various other Pagans, and especially a very religious Jew named
- 3:49Tripho. Tripho was a man of great character. In no way, shape
- 3:53or form, Tripho show anything but respect and interest, a genuine interest in
- 4:09God, and a great example of the truly religious Jewish mind of the time.
- 4:17Now, his companions were derisive, and often Saint Justin had chastised him
- 4:25once or twice. Sat Justin even got a little impatient with Trypho. But
- 4:30in the end, it seems that Trypho and his companions, like about half
- 4:34of all Jews during this era, did convert to Christianity, not by force,
- 4:41not by anything other than the explanation that the Apostles and their immediate successors,
- 4:48their disciples, their followers every day, every I mean every week and
- 4:55basically daily, they were going to the public square or they were going into
- 4:58the synagogues, and they were explaining through the prophets, through the Old Testament
- 5:05that Jesus was the Messiah, and they converted probably the majority of Jews within
- 5:14the first two hundred years of the Church. Most people don't know that.
- 5:17In fact, most people are taught the very opposite. But the truth is
- 5:26that the early Church was very Jewish, and it was through their knowledge of
- 5:33the Old Testament that they could see the Messiah that they could not see when
- 5:40he was living. So let's start with Saint Justin Martyr's dialogue with Triphos.
- 5:46It just bits some pieces. It's a very long document. I've just pulled
- 5:49some relevant paragraphs. Saint Justin says to Tripho, there will be no other
- 5:58God, o Tripho northwest there from eternity, any other existing. I thus
- 6:02addressed him, but he who made and disposed all this universe. Nor do
- 6:08we think that there is one God for us and another for you, but
- 6:11that he alone is God, who led your fathers out of Egypt with a
- 6:14strong hand and a high arm. Nor if we trusted any other, for
- 6:17there is no other but in Him in whom you have also trusted, the
- 6:23God of Abraham and Isaac and of Jacob. But we do not trust through
- 6:28Moses or through the Law, for then we would do the same as yourselves.
- 6:31But now, for I have read that there should be a final law
- 6:34and a covenant. The chiefest of all which is now incumbent on men to
- 6:39observe, as many are seeking after the inherence of God. For the law
- 6:43promulgated on Horeb is now old and belongs to yourself alone, yourselves alone.
- 6:48But this is universally for all. Now law placed against law has abrogated that
- 6:54which is before it. And a covenant which comes after is in like manner
- 6:59put an end to the previous one, and an eternal and final law,
- 7:02namely Christ, has been given to us. And the covenant is trustworthy,
- 7:06after which he says, there should be no law, no commandment, no
- 7:10ordinance. Have you not read this which Isaiah says, hearken unto me,
- 7:15hearken unto me me my people, and ye Kings, give ear unto me.
- 7:19For a law shall go forth from me, and my judgment shall be
- 7:23for a light to the nations. My righteousness approaches swiftly, and my salvation
- 7:28shall go forth, and nations shall trust in my own arm. And by
- 7:32Jeremiah, concerning the same new covenant, he speaks, behold the days come,
- 7:38saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the House
- 7:41of Israel. And when the house come, saith, and with the House
- 7:46of Judah, not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in
- 7:48the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of Egypt.
- 7:51If therefore Glad proclaimed a new covenant which was to be instituted. And
- 7:58this for a light of the nations, we see and are persuaded that men
- 8:01approach God leaving their idols and other unrighteousness, through the name of him who
- 8:07was crucified, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, and abide by their confession even
- 8:15unto death, and maintained piety. Moreover, by the works and the attendant
- 8:20miracles. It is possible for all to understand that He is the new Law,
- 8:24the new Covenant, and the expectation of those who, out of every
- 8:28people wait for the good things of God. For the true spiritual Israel and
- 8:33the sentence of Judah, Jacob, Isaac and Abraham, who in uncircumcision was
- 8:37approved of and blessed by God on account of his faith and called the father
- 8:41of many nations. Are we who have been led through God this crucified Christ,
- 8:46as shall be demonstrated while we proceed. You see, Trypho and his
- 8:50Jewish companions could not accept that Christians were well worshiping and appropriately worshiping. We
- 9:01shall say the same God as they did. Because Christians refused circumcision, Christians
- 9:07did not follow Jewish dietary laws, and they did not observe the Jewish Sabbath.
- 9:13That it's very very clear, my Torah observant friends, please read the
- 9:18early Church follows, beginning with the Ddak. The Christians, the first generation,
- 9:24the Apostles, and those immediately after them stated clearly, no longer do
- 9:28we go to church on the Jewish Sabbath. We go church on the Christian
- 9:33Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead. Here Saint Justin Martyr,
- 9:37who was martyred for his faith. He was killed because he was a Christian,
- 9:45is explaining that there's a new law. The old law is gone dead
- 9:50done, there's a new law in christ. Just as the Jewish Sabbath was
- 9:54the last day of the old week, the Christian Sabbath is the first of
- 10:00a new week, a new man, a new church, no longer bound
- 10:03by what had gone before. For since you have read O TRYPHO, as
- 10:11you yourself admitted the doctrines taught by our Savior, I do not think that
- 10:15I have done foolishly in adding some short utterances of his to the prophetic statements.
- 10:20Washed therefore, and now be cleaned and put away iniquity from your souls,
- 10:24as God bids you to be washed with this laver and circumcised with the
- 10:28true circumcision. For we too observe the fleshy circumcision, and the sabbaths,
- 10:33and in short all feasts. For we two would observe the fleshy circumcision and
- 10:41the Sabbath, and in short all feasts, if we did not know for
- 10:45what reason they were enjoined to you, namely on account of your transgression and
- 10:48the hardness of your hearts. For if we patiently endure all things contrived against
- 10:54us by wicked men and demons, so that even amid cruelties, unutterable death,
- 10:58and torments, we pray for mercy for those who inflict such things upon
- 11:03us, and do not wish to give the least retort to anyone. Even
- 11:07as the new lawgiver commanded us, how is it, Tripho, that we
- 11:09would not observe those rights which do not harm us? As speak of fleshly
- 11:13circumcision and sabbaths and feasts. He's sang very clearly, Christians will suffer all
- 11:20kinds of torments for their faith, but have no need of the toral law.
- 11:26If they had a need for it, if they were willing to die
- 11:31for their faith, they would certainly have adopted. But they didn't because that
- 11:35had passed. They had a new law giver, namely Jesus Christ, who
- 11:39gave his authority of the church to tell what he taught. It is this
- 11:48about which we are a loss, and with reason, because why you endure
- 11:52such things, you do not observe all the other customs we are now discussing.
- 11:54That was Tripho's answer. He says, this concision is not, however,
- 12:01necessary for all men, but for you alone. In order that I've
- 12:03already said, you must suffer these things which you now justly suffer. Nor
- 12:07do we receive that useless baptism of systerms, for it has nothing to do
- 12:11with this baptism of life. Wherefore God also has announced you of forsaken him.
- 12:16There was a Jewish tradition of baptism before Christianity. He's saying here that
- 12:24the Christian baptism cleanses one of sins. The Jewish baptism and the handwashing were
- 12:30merely outward forms of cleansing. Now, it's very important. The early Church
- 12:37made clear. One of the main reasons that the law of Moses, the
- 12:43Torial law, was so strict and stringent and had to be followed by the
- 12:48Jews was because when they were at Mount Sinai and God gave Moses the law,
- 12:56they turned and began worshiping idols. They had a simple ten commandments.
- 13:03Because they were hard hearted, stiff necked, it wasn't good enough for them.
- 13:07They had to be forced into complying with what God wished by a much
- 13:13stringent, more stringent, more complex law. The Christians are being different entirely
- 13:22from Judaism, were not under that law because they had not persecuted and killed
- 13:28the prophets, they had not worshiped idols, they had not you know,
- 13:35rejected while Moses was literally right up in front of them on the top of
- 13:39the mountain and they could see the cloud of God over you know. I
- 13:43mean, this is the thing, you know, when Jesus says the one
- 13:46unforgivable sin as sin against the Holy Spirit. That was when the you know,
- 13:52religious use at that time could not understand he was the Messiah and accused
- 13:58him of being demon posses. Think about this, their very ancestors. A
- 14:03few thousand years earlier. We're sitting at the base of the mountain looking up
- 14:07as a cloud of God descended on the mountain, and there's fire and smoke
- 14:11and lightning, and they can hear the voice booming, and they know God
- 14:16is giving Moses to Tea commandments. And they turned and said, no,
- 14:20we want to go back to Egypt. God just took us out of Egypt.
- 14:22Forget it. We want to go back. We missed our comfortable lifestyle
- 14:26and our good meals. Even though we were slaves. There were fleshpots and
- 14:31out here we're in the desert and we're suffering. And they started worshiping idols
- 14:35because of that. The law was a punishment. It's well, you can
- 14:41go back to the show last week, you know, Saint Paul specifically says
- 14:46that the law was a punishment, and salvation does not come through the law.
- 14:52Death comes through the law. Jesus crucified and killed and buried the law
- 14:58and rose again on as a new man with a new church and a new
- 15:01law. And we are, by no means, by no regard, bound
- 15:07by the law that was actually a punishment for the Hebrew people because of their
- 15:15turning against God. At Mount Sinai, because of their turning against Moses had
- 15:22complaining against about him, you know, lack of water, and he had
- 15:26to strike the rock, complaining against some manna in the desert. I mean,
- 15:30God was giving them bread from heaven, and they said, no,
- 15:33we want to go back to Egypt. We don't want anything to do with
- 15:37this. We want the meat and the festivals and the fun we had in
- 15:39Egypt, you know, refusing to go into the Promised Land. When God
- 15:48finally brought them to the Promised Land and they sent out people, look,
- 15:52they said, no, no, no, they're giants there. We can't
- 15:54defeat these people. They doubted God time and time again, and God had
- 15:58to chastise them to purify them. You know, much as we hope to
- 16:03be purified in purgatory, much as when we look at our sufferings in our
- 16:10lives, we accept it as penance. The law was essentially a penance,
- 16:17and it is in no way binding on the Christian who is a new man,
- 16:21whether Jew or gentile. Because when you go through a Christian baptism,
- 16:26you are reborn, You're born again, Jesus said it. Unless you are
- 16:33born again by water and of the spirit, you won't enter the Kingdom of
- 16:37Heaven. That's very In one way, I could say, it's so clear
- 16:45in the Bible, how can anyone understand it? But then again I look
- 16:48in there so many that misunderstand it. So I guess, I guess that's
- 16:53one reason I'm here is I'm trying to explain what, honestly to me is
- 16:59fairy obvious, very obvious. But if it wasn't, Hey, Saint Justin
- 17:04Martyr, when in his dialogue with Tripho, you cannot mistake it. He
- 17:10was really very clear he said this circumcision. Well, I just said that
- 17:17circumcisions only for the Jews. Wherefore, also God has announced that you have
- 17:22forsaken him the living fountain and digged yourself broken cisterns which can hold no water.
- 17:30Even you who are the circumcised, who are circumcised according to the flesh,
- 17:33have need of our circumcision. But we have in the latter do not
- 17:37require the former. In other words, you can find salvation through Jesus Christ
- 17:42through the circumcision of the heart, not of the flesh. But we don't
- 17:48need your law. We don't need your mosaic regulations, for if it were
- 17:52necessary, as you suppose, God would not have made Adam uncircumcised, would
- 17:56not have had the respect to the gifts of able when being uncircumcised he offered
- 18:02sacrifice, and would not have been pleased with the uncircumcision of Enoch, who
- 18:07was not found because God had translated him a lot. Being uncircumcised, was
- 18:11saved from Sodom, the angels themselves, and the Lord sending him out.
- 18:17Noah was the beginning of our race. Yet uncircumcised, along with his children,
- 18:22he went into the ark. Melchizedek, the priest of the Most High,
- 18:26was uncircumcised, to whom also Abraham, the first who received circumcision after
- 18:32the flesh gave ties, and he blessed him, after whose order of God
- 18:36declared by the mouth of Davia that he would establish an everlasting priest. Therefore,
- 18:41to you alone. This circumcision was necessary in order that the people may
- 18:45be no people, and the nation no nation, as also Josiah, when
- 18:51the twelve Prophets declares. Moreover, all the righteous men already mentioned, though
- 18:55they kept no sabbaths, were pleasing to God and after them Abraha him with
- 19:00all his decisions descendants until Moses, under whom your nation appeared unrighteous and ungrateful
- 19:07to God, making a calf in the wilderness. Wherefore God accommodate himself to
- 19:11that nation enjoined them also to offer sacrifices, as if to his name,
- 19:15in order that you may not serve idols, which precept, however, you
- 19:19have not observed. Nay, you sacrificed your children to demons, and you
- 19:25were commanded to keep sabbaths that you might retain the memorial of God. For
- 19:29his word makes this announcement saying that you may know that I am the God
- 19:33who redeemed you. That's just what I just said. Basically, Before Abraham,
- 19:41there were many people who love God, and God loved them, and
- 19:45they were righteous, and they were justified by their faith. To Abraham,
- 19:49he gave the circumcision. Remember, the law is very inclusive and comprehensive and
- 19:57very complex, and circumcision is an outward sign of the law. When one
- 20:03is physically circumcised, one has pledged to keep the law and to violate one
- 20:10iota one precept of the law is to violate the entire law. So when
- 20:14they talk with circumcision, they could easily be talking about, you know,
- 20:17keeping kosher, not even pork, or going to church, going to the
- 20:21temple on Saturday, etc. The law in its entirety, it was only
- 20:27imposed after the people rebelled against God at MALICINAI. And it's only for the
- 20:37Jewish people. That's what the earliest Christians believe, those who learn directly from
- 20:41Jesus and his apostles. Why would you think different just because the Old Testaments
- 20:48at the beginning of the Bible, flip it around, put the New Testament
- 20:51at the beginning of the Bible, start with Saint Paul saying, we no
- 20:53longer follow circumcision, we no longer celebrate the Jewish Sabbath, we no longer
- 20:59worry about what meats we eat, or the washing of hands or etc.
- 21:03Etc. And you'd have a very different, a very different picture, wouldn't
- 21:10you. So many people when they pick up the Bible, they start with
- 21:12Genesis and they don't get very far. By the time they get Leviticus,
- 21:15they're overwhelmed. Well, you know, the early Church wasn't They knew what
- 21:21was right and wrong, and they told you, And all you have to
- 21:23do is read what they said. It's really easy these days. You can
- 21:27literally just go on the internet and pull up all the writings of the early
- 21:32church fathers if you can't go to a library. You know, my ancestors
- 21:34didn't have that wonderful privilege. It is a privilege, and there's no longer
- 21:40any excuse to be ignorant. He says. Moreover, you are commanded to
- 21:45abstain from certain kinds of foods in order that you may keep God before your
- 21:49eyes while you ate and drank, seeing that you were prone and very ready
- 21:53to depart from His knowledge, as Moses also of farms. The people ate
- 21:57and drank, and rose up to play. And again Jacob ate and was
- 22:00satisfied, and waxed fat. And he who was beloved kicked. He waxed
- 22:06fat, he grew thick, he was enlarge, and he forsook the God
- 22:10who made him. For it was told to you by Moses in the Book
- 22:14of Genesis, that God granted a Noah, being just a man, to
- 22:17eat of every animal, but not a flesh with blood, which is dead.
- 22:22And he was ready to say, as the green herbs, I anticipated,
- 22:26why do you not receive this statement? As the green herbs, and
- 22:30the sense which it was given by God to wit that just as God granted
- 22:36the herbs for sustenance to man, even so he has given the animals for
- 22:40the diet of flesh. But you say a distinction was laid thereafter by Noah,
- 22:44because we do not eat certain herbs, and you interpret it. This
- 22:48thing is incredible. As you interpreted, this thing is incredible. And first,
- 22:52I shall not occupy myself with this, though I show though able to
- 22:56say and hold that every vegetable's food and fit to be eaten. But although
- 23:00we discriminate between green herbs not eating all, we were framed from eating some,
- 23:04but not because they are common or unclean, because they're bitter or deadly
- 23:08or thorny. But we lay hands on and take of all herbs, which
- 23:12are sweet, very nourishing, and good, whether they are marine or land
- 23:17plants. Thus, also God, by the mouth of Moses, commands you
- 23:19to abstain from unclean and improper and violent animals. When moreover, though you
- 23:25were eating man in the desert, and we're seeing all those wondrous acts wrought
- 23:30for you by God, you made and worship the golden calf. Hence,
- 23:33he cries continuously and justly. They are foolish children in whom there is no
- 23:37faith. So you know this is getting into the Jewish laws. Reference what
- 23:45I said last week from Saint barnabas of why the Jews were prohibited from eating
- 23:52certain foods. But he's making the point here. You know. It says
- 23:57the green herbs were given for food. Well, we don't eat all the
- 24:00green herbs, because, yes, some of them are poisonous. If you
- 24:03eat some monkshood aconite, for instance, you would die. If you eat
- 24:08poison hemlock, as the name intails, you will die. It's very close
- 24:12cousin. The carrot is very nutritious and almost identical, very good for you.
- 24:18So we have to discriminate amongst the green herbs. Wherefore meat and fish,
- 24:26with very few exceptions, are all good and nourishing. Barracuda, for
- 24:33instance, can be somewhat toxic. The liver, especially of blowfish, can
- 24:38be very toxic. For I. Well, okay, if you ate a
- 24:45polar bear liver, it's so high vitamin A it would kill you. If
- 24:48you ate only wild rabbits, they have so little fat, you would die
- 24:52of malnutrition because you're not getting a fat in your diet. Vegetarians and vegans
- 24:57beware, you'll often don't get fats in your diet. Your brain's atrophy and
- 25:03you have mistaken ideas and out of control emotions because you're not getting the nutrition
- 25:11you need in your diet which God gave you. As several of the early
- 25:19Church fathers and even I think Saint Paul implied, to turn up your nose
- 25:26to say I won't eat meat is actually an offense to God, who gave
- 25:30it to you as food. Now you can do it as a penance,
- 25:33that's difference. But if you if you do it as saying I am superior,
- 25:38I'm right, I am more moral because I'm vegeous hearing and a vegan,
- 25:41you're actually offending God, the creator, who gave you all this good
- 25:45meat to eat. So the Jewish dietary laws were put in place by God
- 25:55through Moses because the Jews were so prone to gluttony, so prone to be
- 26:00satisfied and well fed. Like I said, they wanted to go back to
- 26:03Egypt where they had all this meat. They didn't want to follow God.
- 26:07They would rather have been comfortable and well fed than to follow God. Again,
- 26:11it's not just something a problem among the Jews is a problem among all
- 26:15people today, But that was a specific punishment put in place because of how
- 26:22they had acted in the desert. Moreover, god enjoined that you keep the
- 26:29Sabbath, and imposed on you other precepts for a sign. As I've already
- 26:33said, on account of your own righteousness and that of your father's. He
- 26:37declares that for the sake of the nations, lest his name be profaned among
- 26:40them. Therefore he permitted some of you to remain alive. You remember,
- 26:45he wanted to kill them all in the desert, and then he, you
- 26:48know, through Moses intercession, said, you know, don't kill them all,
- 26:52or you know, the Egyptians are going to celebrate that the Jews died
- 26:56in the jew the Hebrews died in the desert. Well, yeah, he
- 27:03permitted some of you are man alive. These words of his can prove to
- 27:07you. They are narrated by Ezekiel. Thus, I am the Lord your
- 27:10God. Walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and take no
- 27:12part in the customs of Egypt, and hallow my sabbaths, which is imploral
- 27:18by the way, interesting, huh, not Sabbath singular. And they shall
- 27:22be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am
- 27:25the Lord your God. Notwithstanding ye rebelled against me, and your children walk
- 27:30not in my statutes, and neither kept my judgments to do them, which
- 27:33if a man do, he shall live in them. But they polluted my
- 27:37sabbaths. And I said that I would pour out my fury upon them in
- 27:40the wilderness, to accomplish my anger upon them. Yet I did it not
- 27:44that my name might not be altogether profane in the sight of the heathen.
- 27:48I led them out before their eyes, and I lifted up my hand to
- 27:52them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heath and disperse
- 27:56them through the countries, because they had not executed my judgments. Of it,
- 28:00had despised my statutes and polluted my sabbaths. And their eyes were after
- 28:03the devices of their fathers. Wherefore I gave them also statutes were not good
- 28:10and judgments, whereby they shall not live. And I shall pollute them in
- 28:15their own gifts, that I may destroy all that opened the womb when I
- 28:18passed through them. That's interesting, isn't it. God actually says I gave
- 28:26them statutes which were not good. In other words, he was punishing them
- 28:33for their rebellion, and their hard hardedness, and their stiff neckness, as
- 28:37he says a thousand times, and their wickedness. But if we do not
- 28:41admit of this, we shall be liable to fall into foolish opinions, as
- 28:48if it were not the same God who existed in the times of Enoch and
- 28:51all the rest, who were neither circumcised after the flesh, nor observe sabbaths
- 28:55nor any other rights, seeing that Moses enjoined such services, or that God
- 29:00who has not wished each race of mankind continuously to perform the same righteous actions
- 29:07to admit which seems to be ridiculous and absurd. Therefore we must confess that
- 29:11he who is ever the same, has commanded these and such like institutions on
- 29:15account of sinful men, and we must declare him to be benevolent for knowing
- 29:21needing nothing righteous and good. But if this be not so, tell me,
- 29:25sir, what you think of those matters which we are investigating. And
- 29:30when no one responded, I said, wherefore, trifo, I will proclaim
- 29:33to you and to those who wish to become I have trouble with this word
- 29:40proselyte p R O S E L y t E s. Followers students can't.
- 29:52I can't really pronounce that word very well. The divine message which I
- 29:56heard from that man. You see that the elements are not id and keep
- 30:00no sabbaths, remain as you were born. For if there was no need
- 30:03of circumcision before Abraham, or the observance of Sabbath or feasts or sacrifices before
- 30:08Moses, no more need of them is there now after that, according to
- 30:15the will of God, Jesus, Christ's son has been born without sin,
- 30:18a version sprung by the stock of Abraham, when Abraham himself was an uncircumcision,
- 30:25when he was justified and blessed by reason of the faith he reposed in
- 30:29God, as a scripture tells us. Moreover, the scripture tells us,
- 30:33and the facts themselves compel us to admit that he received circumcision as a sign
- 30:38and not for righteousness, so that it was justly recorded concerning the people,
- 30:44that the soul which shall not be circumcised when the eighth day should be cut
- 30:48off from his family, and therefore the inability of the female sex received fraustry
- 30:52circumcision proves that this circumcision has been given for a sign and not for a
- 30:56work of righteousness. For God has likewise given to women the ability to observe
- 31:02all things which are righteous and virtuous. Well, this is you know,
- 31:04uh, to at this point in time to say that women and men,
- 31:08you know, were equally wholy and equally well able to hold the law was
- 31:14a bit revolutionary. Uh. You know, this is a very important point
- 31:22of early Christianity that they said, you know, male and female can be
- 31:26equally holy and good. And just because a woman can't be circumcised in truth,
- 31:33I mean, aside from the horrible crimes that the Muslims commit against women,
- 31:41doesn't mean that they're any less righteous than the man who's circumcised, because
- 31:45both are equal in the sight of God. Oh that's something, huh.
- 31:51Anyway, But we see that the bodily form of the male has been made
- 31:55different from the bodily form of the female. Yet we know that neither of
- 31:57them is righteous or un righteous merely for this cause. But it is considered
- 32:02righteous by reason of piety and righteousness. Now, Sirs, I said,
- 32:06it is possible for us to show how the Eighth Day possessed a certain mysterious
- 32:10import which the seventh day did not possess, and which was promulgated by God
- 32:15through these rights. But lest I appear now to diverge on other subjects.
- 32:21Understanding what I say, the blood of that circumcision is obsolete, and we
- 32:24trust in the blood of Salvation. And there is now another covenant and another
- 32:29law which has gone forth from Zion. Christ Jesus circumcises all who will,
- 32:35as declared above, with knives of stone, that they may be a righteous
- 32:38nation of people, keeping the faith, holding to the truth, and maintaining
- 32:42peace. Come them with me, All who fear God, who wish to
- 32:46see the good of Jerusalem. Come, all nations. Let us gather ourselves
- 32:52together at Jerusalem, no longer plagued by war, for the sins of her
- 32:57people. For I was manifest to them has sought me. Not I was
- 33:01found of them that asked not for me. He exclaims. By Isaiah,
- 33:07I said, behold me unto nations which were not called by my name.
- 33:10I spread out my hands, and all the day unto a disobedient and gainsaying
- 33:15people which walked in a way that was not good. But after their own
- 33:19sins it is a people that provoketh me to my face. He's quoting the
- 33:23scriptures saying and again, I mean this is knowing no anti Semitic way.
- 33:30That the ancient Hebrew people, the ancient Jews, so rejected everything God gave
- 33:37them that he eventually walked away from him and started a new religion. Doesn't
- 33:45mean that all the words of the prophets were not true, But a lot
- 33:50of what was said was simply and specifically for the Jewish people because they were
- 33:54so rebellious. I'm sure I had God do the same way the Greeks,
- 34:00or the Romans or whatever. They would have been equally rebellious. Human nature
- 34:04is human nature. But this is the history as it's given to us through
- 34:08the Bible. He says. But if you deceive yourselves by ambiguous forms of
- 34:13speech, for where it is said the law of the Lord is perfect,
- 34:16you do not understand it of the law which was to be after Moses,
- 34:21but of the law which was given by Moses. Although declare, although God
- 34:25declared that he would establish a new law and a new covenant. Tripho asked,
- 34:30but if some even now wish to live in inservance of the institutions given
- 34:35by Moses, and yet believe in this Jesus who was crucified, recognizing him
- 34:39to be the Christ, and that it has given him to be absolute judge
- 34:43of all, and that this is the everlasting kingdom. Can they also be
- 34:46saved? He inquired of me. Tripho is beginning to turn his heart's beginning
- 34:51to open up to the truth of Jesus. And I replied, let us
- 34:54consider it that also together. Let us consider that also together, whether one
- 35:00may observe all the Mosaic institutions. And he answered no, for we know
- 35:06that, as you said, it is not possible either anywhere to sacrifice the
- 35:09lamb of the Passover, or to offer the goats order for the fast,
- 35:14or in short, to present all the other offerings. And I said,
- 35:16tell me then yourself, I pray some of the things which can be observed,
- 35:21for you will be persuaded that the one man does not keep or has
- 35:24not performed the eternal decrees, he may assurely be saved. He then replied,
- 35:30to keep the sabbath, to be circumcised, to observe the months,
- 35:32and to be washed. If you touch anything prohibited by Moses or after sexual
- 35:37intercourse. This is very clearly what our Tora observant friends would have us believe
- 35:44today, that we still have to keep at least the basic tenants of Tora
- 35:49law, beyond the Ten Commandments. Obviously, the Ten Commandments were instituted before
- 35:53the Tora law, which begins to come through Levitica, Suteronomy, some extent,
- 35:59etc. He then replied, to keep the Sabbath, to be circumcised,
- 36:01to observe the months there were certain holidays and holy times, and to
- 36:06be washed if you touch anything prohibited by Moses or after sexual intercourse, which
- 36:10is also very interesting. Under the Mosaic law, sex is somewhat dirty.
- 36:19In Christianity, it is a holy vocation, the foundation of the family and
- 36:25making children and elevated to its rightful place, which is why we don't practice
- 36:32birth control and such, and why we have monogamy. You know, Yes,
- 36:40sexual intercourse between husband and wife is a very holy institution, and under
- 36:47Mosaic law it was heavily regulated and not necessarily venerated. I guess would be
- 36:59the upper word, And I said, do you think that Abraham, Isaac,
- 37:04Jacob, Noah, and Job and all the rest before or after them
- 37:07equally righteous, also Sarah the wife of Abraham, Rebecca the wife of Isaac,
- 37:13Raciel the wife of Jacob, and Leah, and all the rest of
- 37:15them until the mother of Moses, the most faithful servant, who observed none
- 37:20of these statutes will be saved. And Tripho answered, we're not Abraham and
- 37:23all his descendants circumcised. And I said, I know that Abraham and his
- 37:29descendants were circumcised. The reason why circumcised was given to the m I say
- 37:32at length in what is going before, and if what said does not convince
- 37:37you, let's search again to the matter. But you're aware that up to
- 37:39Moses, no one in fact who is righteous observed any of these rights at
- 37:44all which we are talking, or received one commandment to observed, except that
- 37:49of circumcision, which began with Abraham. And he replied, we know it
- 37:52and admit it that they are saved. So he just admitted that especially all
- 37:57these women, all these upstand saintly women could not observe circumcision and were saved
- 38:06through their faith and not through the law. Big point. Big point.
- 38:09You know how I've mentioned before that whether feminists want to admit it or not,
- 38:15Christianity elevated the woman. Christianity gave the woman's role dignity in a world
- 38:23where women had no rights or dignity. And then I returned in answer,
- 38:31you perceived that by God, Moses laid all such ordinances upon you on account
- 38:37of the hardness of your people's hearts, in order that by the large number
- 38:40of them, you might keep God continually and in every action before your eyes,
- 38:45and never begin to act unjustly or impiously. In other words, he
- 38:49had to give them so many laws and regulations they couldn't forget God in any
- 38:53moment of the day. Very important. But for he enjoined you to place
- 39:00around you a fringe of purple dye in order that you might not forget God.
- 39:04He have a commandity to wear a philactery certain characters. This a little
- 39:07box essentially is one with all the prayers in it, which indeed we consider
- 39:14holy being graved on very thin parchment. If you ever meet a Hasidic Jew,
- 39:17ask them about the philactery. I love Hasidic Jews. I got along
- 39:22great with them, and they're glad to tell you about the tradition. And
- 39:27they, you know, they follow the letter of the law to the letter.
- 39:31I mean they are in this true tradition of Moses. And I have
- 39:36a world of respect for Hasidic Jews. They're fantastic people. They have a
- 39:40great sense of humor, they have a great wisdom and tradition and great food.
- 39:46By the way, if you ever want to really eat good, go
- 39:50to where the Hasidic Jews are. And if some don't like to associate with
- 39:54gent titles, okay, most do. They have. Most are like really
- 40:00talkative and just really like to tell you a lot of interesting things. And
- 40:05I mean some of my favorite people on earth actually, And you respect their
- 40:09tradition, they will respect your tradition. It's really great. You know what.
- 40:14They don't respect Messianic Jews and Torah observed Christians, those who try to
- 40:20combine the true religions into one. They will say, wait a minute,
- 40:24we do not believe in Jesus. They won't even say the name of Jesus.
- 40:28Okay. They do not respect Jews who try to share about traditions,
- 40:34and they really don't respect well, they probably respect Christians who try to combine
- 40:38the true traditions more than Jews. They absolutely reject Jews as being you know,
- 40:45blasphemous, as being just totally horrible. If they accept Jesus a messiah,
- 40:52it's very interesting. There is no compromise with a Hasidic Jew, and
- 40:57I respect them for that, and they respect you for your faith. Even
- 41:01though we can disagree, but we agree on social issues and we agree usually
- 41:07on politics. And let me tell you, these people have some fantastic food.
- 41:10I'm just telling you. And the music, oh my gosh, I
- 41:14love that. Was it klezmer music or something? I really do? You
- 41:20know? Well? I grew up with David Grisman as a hero, excuse
- 41:23me, as a hero, great mandolin player, played with Jerry Garcia,
- 41:28a lot of the grateful dead. I fell in love with the Jewish music.
- 41:32Good stuff, good stuff. As I said, I've had many friends,
- 41:36dated some Jewish girls. I like Jews yea. Even my old friend
- 41:42Kinky Friedman as non religious a Jew as he is. He's a proud,
- 41:46hereditary, proud genetic Jew, and I dated his girlfriends. She was his
- 41:54girlfriend, was the mentor to the girl I dated who was from TELEVI eve
- 42:01remarkable story there. Maybe we'll get into that another day. A blue eyed,
- 42:06blonde haired Jewish girl from Tel Aviv. You know, it's like unheard
- 42:09of. Right, she was maybe four feet eleven, weighed about seventy pounds.
- 42:15Here I am, you know, six four, two hundred and ten
- 42:17pound two twenty hillbilly from North Carolina. And we got along so well.
- 42:22And it was based on mutual respect. We start out, we respect each
- 42:28other. Now, let's have a good time, let's eat, let's go
- 42:30to a concert. You know, everybody could get along. You know,
- 42:35love God is your your whole heart, and live, love your neighbors,
- 42:37yourself, love your neighbor. It's simple. It's not that hard anyway,
- 42:45all right, So where was I said that I returned the answer. You
- 42:47perceive that God, by Moses laid all such ordinances upon you, that on
- 42:52the account of the hardness of your people's hearts, in order that by the
- 42:55large number of them, you might keep God constantly in every action. We
- 42:59talked with the friend, We talked about the philactory at the same time,
- 43:07however, convincing you that in your hearts you have not even a faint remembrance
- 43:16of God's worship. Yet even so you were dissawayed from idolatry. For in
- 43:22the times of Elijah and God, recount of the number of those who had
- 43:24not bowed the need tobey all. He said, the number was seven thousand.
- 43:29And Isaiah rebukes you for having sacrifice your children to idols. But because
- 43:35we refuse to sacrifice to those whom were of old accustomed to the sacrifice,
- 43:39undergo extreme penalties and rejoice in death. Christians were being crucified even and fed
- 43:46the lions and bears, and just blatantly killed and tortured to death because they
- 43:52would not sacrifice to the pagan idols of the Romans and Greeks, believing that
- 43:57God will raise us up by His Christ and will make us in incorruptible and
- 44:00undisturbed and immortal. And we know that the ordinance is imposed by reason of
- 44:04the hardness of your people's hearts. Contribute nothing to the performance of righteousness and
- 44:09piety in order. Well, he just said, these ordinances were imposed on
- 44:15your people because of the hardness of their hearts, of your hearts, of
- 44:21your people's hearts, they contribute nothing to the performance of righteousness and piety for
- 44:25the Christian. So Saint Justin Martyr he summed it all up. I think
- 44:31we got done in one And if you have any question about whether or not
- 44:37Christians followed tore a law, observed the Jewish Sabbath, circumcision of sort of
- 44:44dietary commands, of what did the handwashing and limited the number of steps they
- 44:50took on Sunday and etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. You need go no further.
- 44:55Did Saint Justin Martyr, who was writing when at least one of the
- 45:00Apostles were still alive, who is literally of the first generation, who wrote
- 45:07after the Bible was compiled and formalized. If you want to know what the
- 45:14first Christians did, those who know best because they learned directly from Jesus and
- 45:19his disciples, read Saint Justin Martyr, and you will know that. No,
- 45:24my friends to are observant Christians, Messianic Jews seven day Adventists. You
- 45:30are completely wrong. There is no compromise, there is no mixing together of
- 45:35the two traditions. The Law of the Jews is entirely different than the New
- 45:40Law and the New Covenant of Christians, and it's explained in great detail by
- 45:49the writings of the early Christian fathers. Just look it up, just read
- 45:52it. All you have to do is accept that there is knowledge to be
- 45:58had outside of the pages of the Bible. The writings are the same apostles
- 46:04who wrote the Bible. The New Testament in the DC will tell you that
- 46:08you are wrong. And those writings are just as authoritative authoritative as those they
- 46:15put in the Bible. They just didn't include them in the Bible, the
- 46:19exact same writers. They're still guaranteed by the Holy Spirit against error. Were
- 46:24they not, they couldn't have said, these books belonging in the Bible,
- 46:29you can't believe the Bible and disbelieve the other writings of the apostles. So
- 46:37y'all, Yeah, we've covered a lot of ground. We wrapped this one
- 46:40up, and I'm glad tomorrow we'll get into another aspect of something different.
- 46:46I don't know even yet what this subject is going to be. I think
- 46:50we probably ought to just kind of wrap it up and talk about the name
- 46:52of Jesus, because people get a little confused about how Jesus ought to be
- 46:58spelled or pronounced, as if that actually means anything. It doesn't. My
- 47:02name, my first name is William. You can call me William. If
- 47:07you're French, you can call me Guillaum, you can call me Bill.
- 47:10And I don't even go by the name William, I go by Judson,
- 47:14and I'm still the same guy no matter what you call me. Maybe we'll
- 47:16get into that or if something comes up. I mean, heck, there's
- 47:21a lot going on, this whole thing with the Dodgers. Maybe we'll talk
- 47:24about that tomorrow. I don't know, that's great. I mean, the
- 47:29Dodgers made a huge mistake. They forgot team loyalty. The fans are loyal
- 47:35to the team, but the team also has to be loyal to the fans.
- 47:37They offended Christians, Catholics, especially Jews. They offended everyone who Muslims,
- 47:46I mean, everyone who does not believe in vulgar transsexual blasphemy. You
- 47:55know, I'm not gonna I'm sorry, y'all. I mean, if if
- 48:00you think that it's okay for people to do things like make a cartoon portraying
- 48:08Muhammad as being, you know, homosexual, doing nasty things to purposely offend
- 48:16Muslims, I don't agree with you. No, I don't. I don't
- 48:20agree with you. I respecting Muslims religion, well, there are a lot
- 48:24of Muslims who respect the Christian religion and were equally outraged by this abomination that
- 48:34the Dodgers put on. There were a lot of non religious people who just
- 48:37thought, you know, I don't want to go see this nasty hate group.
- 48:43And no one showed up for the game. No one showed up for
- 48:45the game. Basically, no one showed up for the last three games.
- 48:50And it looks like the players for the Dodgers are either purposefully losing or they've
- 48:54just been totally demoralized. I mean, I love Freddie Freeman. He was
- 48:59with the for years. He's now with the Dodgers. Freddy Freeman's not swaying
- 49:02a very good bat right now. I don't know if he had just been
- 49:07completely demoralized or because he has a heart and a conscience and he's actually a
- 49:12really soft hearted guy. By the way, Freddie and I would get along
- 49:15really well, even though you know, I've never met him and I never
- 49:19will. I just you know, he's a baseball player I really like,
- 49:22even though I think he should have stayed with the Braves. He kind of
- 49:25stabbed us in the back when he walked away. But that's not the hearer
- 49:30there. The Dodgers are losing millions of dollars a day, just like Bud
- 49:36Light did and Target and that's important. This is actually a cultural revolution that's
- 49:44happening quietly, very quietly, and very under the radar, that could save
- 49:49this nation. And I hope and pray it does. I don't want to
- 49:52see a Jew denigrated for their faith. I don't want to see a Muslim
- 49:57denigrated for their faith. I don't want to see a Buddhists. I mean,
- 50:01come on, some of my best friends have in Buddhist I don't want
- 50:04to see a secular, non religious person forced to do something they don't want
- 50:12to do. You're humish, or you go down the list. I mean,
- 50:15people who really hate Catholics, I will still stand up for their rights.
- 50:20You know, that's enshrined in our constitution. That's our right to conscience
- 50:25and free speech and free association that seemed to be flushed on the toilet during
- 50:30COVID, And people are starting to come back and make a stand for what's
- 50:35right. And I mean, love your neighbors, yourself, love God with
- 50:38all your heart, and identify and reject evil. And people are actually doing
- 50:45it in California, of all places, the Land of Fruits and Nuts,
- 50:47as Robert Reagan used to call it. And I think it's fantastic. I
- 50:52am actually really excited about this. So anyway, and the words of Saint
- 50:58Padre Pio, pray open, don't worry, and y'all I will talk to
- 51:00you tomorrow. Okay,
