- 0:00All right, hour number two, welcome back, Miller and Cond
- 0:02and Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent and I with you here until
- 0:072:00. Still to come this hour, John
- 0:10Bowencamp, Associated Press. Let's get the Cappy off to
- 0:13Chicago. We shall go Cappy.
- 0:15All right, without your music. Yeah, where is where is my
- 0:20music? Technical difficulty, we're
- 0:22having trouble here. We got clock issues where we're
- 0:24coming back from the we got our network that that needs to
- 0:27connect to 30 after, but we came back, we got we got issues over
- 0:30here, but we're persevering through it absolutely.
- 0:33We'll play it twice next. Week Ryan Mcguffey just got
- 0:36knocked off the Internet and he's like technical difficulties
- 0:39here. I'm like, Oh my God, OK.
- 0:41Not good when you're on the Internet, Absolutely.
- 0:44That ASW stuff hit me with my podcast hard.
- 0:46What? What is?
- 0:47That what are you talking about? Amazon servers were down, yeah.
- 0:50Yeah, yeah. Amazon Web.
- 0:51Services. It was a dessert because we use
- 0:55AI programs, we use different places for the podcast, other
- 0:58things for the video. I mean, it's just there's so
- 1:00many things that, guess what, They're almost all under that
- 1:03umbrella. Did it get you cap 2 with your
- 1:05cap channel? That doesn't dare mess.
- 1:08With me, good stuff. Let's let's let's start with the
- 1:13Chicago Bears. And by all, by all accounts, you
- 1:16know, Lamar Jackson was going to be back.
- 1:18But now it doesn't sound like he is going to be back.
- 1:20There's some question mark whether when the Bears get to
- 1:23head to Baltimore this weekend that Lamar Jackson will be
- 1:26awaiting them. The Bears are, having won their
- 1:28last four straight, certainly much rather face a Raven squad
- 1:33as bad as they are on defense and without their, you know,
- 1:36otherworldly quarter back Lamar Jackson on offense.
- 1:38What are you hearing about the prospects of Jackson perhaps
- 1:41missing another game cap? So there is some of that
- 1:46speculation. He is on the practice field
- 1:48today, but limited. So he's not really doing a lot.
- 1:55Ben Johnson so said today. This is his quote.
- 1:59We are preparing for Baltimore as if Lamar Jackson is playing.
- 2:03That's our starting point. I think that's where you have to
- 2:07start the conversation. Cap you, you just do.
- 2:09And yes, they're a completely different team.
- 2:11But Lamar, he takes more. The other part is, you know, how
- 2:15healthy is he going to be those kind of things.
- 2:17This is still a desperate team. This is a team in Baltimore that
- 2:20has to get a victory. The Bears have been so good
- 2:23getting those turnovers, forcing those kind of things.
- 2:26Is it just led to a more difficult just week in general
- 2:29getting ready for opponent because it's such a big question
- 2:32with Lamar? So you're saying is it difficult
- 2:37to prepare? Yes, absolutely.
- 2:41I don't think it is because I would imagine it'd be Snoop
- 2:45Huntley that would start and he is obviously not Lamar, but he
- 2:49is a reasonable facsimile style wise.
- 2:54It's not like you've got Andy Dalton coming in to run Lamar
- 2:58Jackson's offense. You've got a guy who can run,
- 3:03can throw on the move. So it's a similar style.
- 3:07I think it's the same game prep week and it comes down to how
- 3:10did the Bears play period. And there is going to be a game
- 3:14and I think it's this one. If Lamar plays for sure Caleb
- 3:18Williams has to go win that game for you.
- 3:20Like he won very good last week. That's just the fact.
- 3:24The week before he was fine, passable.
- 3:26They won four straight. He hasn't killed them, you know,
- 3:30with major mistakes, but this is a game you're going on the road
- 3:35against an opponent who, albeit they have a substandard record
- 3:39right now, that team has won 12 games.
- 3:41So I think the last two years each, they've been seven out of
- 3:45eight in the playoffs and started the season.
- 3:48ESPN them ranked. ESPN had them ranked the number
- 3:51one roster in the National Football League.
- 3:54So I think it's a tough game to win.
- 3:57I really do, especially if Lamar plays.
- 4:00Kappa, what's kind of the I guess the the word around
- 4:04Colston Loveland. I just look at his stats.
- 4:06This is the 10th overall pick in the draft. 8 passes.
- 4:11That's all he's caught. This year's yet to take a ball.
- 4:13Carry Do you see what Tyler Warren's doing?
- 4:14No, I have. Especially right when you could
- 4:16have had him. Is Loveland a disappointment so
- 4:20far? Kappa.
- 4:21Too early to to go there. Way too early to go there and he
- 4:25was injured, he missed. Early.
- 4:26Time with a hip injury and last week those of us you're talking
- 4:31to, one who bet his over on yards, albeit a low number.
- 4:36We all were happy cashing at the window, so his blocking was much
- 4:40better last week and I do think he's going to be a really,
- 4:44really good player. I did too, I just was kind of
- 4:47surprised that he's only caught 8 balls.
- 4:49Yeah, watching what's happened in Indianapolis, I think just
- 4:52rubbing salt in the wound just a little bit.
- 4:54I. Think the Bears would take
- 4:55Colston Loveland over Tyler Warren today?
- 4:58Really. Not a surprise with that
- 5:01organization. The trade deadline is coming up
- 5:03on November 4th and with it the Bears still have holes.
- 5:07We'll see what the record looks like when they get to that
- 5:09point, but edge rusher at the top of the wish list cap.
- 5:15Yeah, but for me, I'm not giving up draft capital for, you know,
- 5:18some guy like there was speculation.
- 5:20This kid from The Jets who has I think one sack this year,
- 5:25Jermaine Johnson. If you tell me, Trey
- 5:28Hendrickson, Max Crosby, especially Max Crosby, if he's
- 5:31fully available, I'm all in. What is the price?
- 5:35Let me know. All in.
- 5:37I want that guy. I don't know if he is.
- 5:39Yesterday, Tom fellas, Farrow said that the the Raiders
- 5:45brought him in and said you have our word, you're not getting
- 5:48traded. Now Jerry Jones said that about
- 5:52Michael Parsons too, and he wears that puke green and gold.
- 5:56So I don't think he's getting traded, but if he's available, I
- 6:01think the Bears would be all in. Miles Garrett, two guys that are
- 6:06so good at that, what they do and they both play for
- 6:09absolutely putrid teams and I'm not sure you can see a light at
- 6:13any one of the tunnels of those two franchises at this point.
- 6:16So what's kind of feel about the Bears now, Cap?
- 6:18Obviously the Vikings have their struggles.
- 6:21The Lions get there. They get creamed by the Chiefs.
- 6:23They look like world beaters on Monday night.
- 6:26I'm still not completely sold on the Packers.
- 6:29I know what the record says and I may have missed that boat.
- 6:32I could be dead wrong. But what's the feeling about the
- 6:35Bears at this point of the season?
- 6:366 games into it. Solid, unspectacular football
- 6:41team that is exceptionally well coached as a great vibe going up
- 6:46in Lake Forest. And again, if Caleb takes a
- 6:49significant step and you go wow, Caleb Williams was outstanding.
- 6:54The Bears can win a hell of a lot of football games.
- 6:56They just can't. I think they're a better team
- 6:59than people realize, but I also think if he doesn't elevate his
- 7:04level of play, there's some losses coming.
- 7:08Certainly was not sharp against the Saints.
- 7:10They were able to run the football.
- 7:11Now that's two consecutive games where the run game certainly has
- 7:15got going to side of things to gum is that the offensive line
- 7:18started finally clicking as they made some moving pieces there
- 7:21with Jones bouncing out. What is it?
- 7:23Is it the running game? Just figured it out.
- 7:25Ben Johnson figuring it out and play calling or an offensive
- 7:28line that's finally taking that step forward.
- 7:31Offensive line and Swift, they're running him more
- 7:34outside, more zone blocking In a guy like DeAndre Swift, he's not
- 7:40great between the tackles. So it's worked out that these
- 7:44did this position group of running back and offensive line.
- 7:48Somebody up there said to me, yeah, the offensive line was
- 7:51like five guys grabbing an instrument, trying to make a
- 7:53band, and now it looks more like a Symphony, like they're moving
- 7:56in concert. So I don't think it's as simple
- 7:59as Theo and that went in for Braxton Jones.
- 8:03I think you've got the 10th pick at right tackle.
- 8:06He's back from injury. You've got a $14 million right
- 8:09guard, a $14 million center, a $17 million left guard and
- 8:14Bennett. That's been serviceable.
- 8:15So I I do think they're going to continue to run the ball well.
- 8:19I'll be surprised if they don't most weeks.
- 8:22Three out of their next four are on the road, and though none of
- 8:26them are overly daunting with the questions with Baltimore
- 8:29certainly this week at Cincinnati, home game against
- 8:32the Giants maybe looks a little more difficult, and then a road
- 8:34trip up to Minnesota after that. This next 4 game stretch it
- 8:38feels important. At minimum two and two.
- 8:42If they can't get to that, are we having a completely different
- 8:44conversation and more big picture questions about this
- 8:48team? If they they struggle and you
- 8:54told me they went, I mean, I don't see a scenario where they
- 8:57go, oh, and four, two and two I think is a passable grade
- 9:02because all of a sudden you're 6:00 and 4:00, you've got 7
- 9:06games left and you have a chance to get yourself to the playoffs.
- 9:12You really do. I think they can go three and
- 9:15one the next four. I do.
- 9:17If they can do that. And now you're 7 and three.
- 9:20Yeah, you're in really good shape.
- 9:22Opening night for the bulls cap give us the the level of
- 9:25excitement one through 1010 being off the charts one is I'll
- 9:30read about the score on the line What what's the kind of the
- 9:33level of bulls as they start their.
- 9:37I was falling asleep as you were asking, look, you know, I'm a
- 9:41huge Billy Donovan guy, big fan, love them, but they just don't
- 9:46have that good A-Team because they got a bad front office.
- 9:49But I do think they can be competitive and Matas Bazelas is
- 9:55an emerging star. He's going to be a star.
- 9:57Remember I told you that that kids going to be a big time
- 10:00player in the NBA. He's only in his second year.
- 10:04He's 19 years of age. There's still a lot of growth
- 10:06and development to go. I think they're over under in
- 10:10Vegas, it's 32 1/2. I'd play the over, but you won't
- 10:14have Kobe White for the first two weeks at least with a strain
- 10:17cap. So we'll see what happens.
- 10:19They start tonight against the Detroit Piston.
- 10:23Hey, Cap, since we're on the Bulls, just real quick, sorry
- 10:26trying to jump in, but but Jordan's going to be a part of
- 10:29of NBC might have saw him last night with Torico.
- 10:32When you think back at at at the end, when they were at their
- 10:34pinnacle, when it was coming to the Last Dance era, if you will,
- 10:38what was it like covering Jordan in particular?
- 10:41Was he just, I mean, untouchable?
- 10:44Could you get close to him? What was it like back in that
- 10:47era at the end cap? Yeah, I covered a ton of it and
- 10:52Michael was awesome. He like he stood at that locker
- 10:55and answered every question and you know, I got to know him
- 11:00before he became Michael Jordan. Like he was really good player
- 11:04from day one, but he wasn't the GOAT.
- 11:07And so I got to know him. I played golf with him and it
- 11:10was a super cool experience. And that guy would stand there
- 11:14and answer all these questions. And then there's some reporter
- 11:18from, you know, Springfield, IL would walk in, he'd been maybe
- 11:22at the other locker room or talking to another player
- 11:25because of the crowd around Michael, and then asked the same
- 11:27question he's already answered three times.
- 11:29And Michael, never, ever would he make that guy or gal feel,
- 11:36you know, less than like, I already answered that.
- 11:38What are you doing? Nope.
- 11:39He would stand there and answer all the questions, but you
- 11:42better be on your guard because if you wrote something he didn't
- 11:46like, he's going to call you on it.
- 11:47Now you better defend your position.
- 11:49Yeah, I'm glad I asked that question.
- 11:50It's a cool story. One more on the Bulls.
- 11:53We're just looking at Josh giddy and remember him obviously early
- 11:56in his career at Oak. He's still only 23.
- 11:59He shot the ball incredible, so much better last year with the
- 12:02Bulls in his first year that he had previously.
- 12:04And that was always the knock against him.
- 12:05Is is there another tear that Josh Giddy could get to?
- 12:08And you kind of look around, he look at this team.
- 12:10He mentioned White being out, but does Giddy have another
- 12:13level that he can take it to and at a minimum put this team on
- 12:16his back and get them to the play in round?
- 12:18Something like that? There better be another gear.
- 12:21They just signed him to, what, five years?
- 12:23125 yeah. So you've got him getting $25
- 12:28million a year, so there better be another gear.
- 12:31He's a really talented player. Really talented.
- 12:35My question is what happens if Kobe White has a Goodyear?
- 12:39I'm not talking about an all pro year, but a Goodyear.
- 12:42You get in that guy 150 two $100 million deal because I'm not I'm
- 12:47trading him. I'll pay a difference makers,
- 12:51difference makers, that kind of money.
- 12:54I'm not paying Kobe White that kind of money.
- 12:56So I think there's a chance to get traded in season.
- 13:00Let's finish up our conversation with David Kaplan's ensuring
- 13:03Stone of Iowa sponsors. Capy joins Trenton I every
- 13:06Wednesday to kick off our number 2, which is the one O clock
- 13:09hour. Let's go to the Cubs cap.
- 13:11Obviously baseball's hot stoves. It's not it's not far from hot
- 13:16by any means, but some buzz starting to kind of trickle out.
- 13:19There's especially in, quote, baseball cities.
- 13:22What are you hearing, if anything, when it comes to the
- 13:24Cubs as far as, you know, potential targets?
- 13:28Kyle Tucker, the Yankees apparently might kick the Tigers
- 13:31there and any Cubs buzz or too early come back.
- 13:36Ask me this question in a couple of weeks.
- 13:38What are you hearing, if anything?
- 13:41Mean look, I've gotten done with believing that my favorite
- 13:46baseball team is going to push all their chips in because you
- 13:49had the second best record in baseball at the trade deadline
- 13:53and you didn't you went and got Mike Soroka and Willie Castro
- 13:58and Kittridge was an OK addition.
- 14:01And then who was the other guy with Taylor Rogers?
- 14:04I mean, that's that's twiddling your thumbs at the deadline.
- 14:08I'm not expecting you to go get Mackenzie Gore or Joe Ryan when
- 14:12they're asking you for Kate Horton and your top pitching
- 14:15prospect and Matt Shaw. I get that.
- 14:18You're telling me you couldn't have gotten more impactful
- 14:20relievers. I don't get it.
- 14:22I really they they frustrate me. That just being honest.
- 14:27Cap what you got in the World Series and how many games for
- 14:30the Dodgers. I'm hoping that Toronto wins in
- 14:34four. I know that's not going to
- 14:36happen, but yeah, I'm like the rest of the North America.
- 14:40I want the Dodgers to lose. So I am rooting hard for the
- 14:45Toronto Blue Jays. I rooted for the Dodgers to beat
- 14:48the team I dislike in the Brewers.
- 14:51Now, enough Dodger love. Get them out of there.
- 14:55Are the Brewers starting to creep into your hatred for the
- 14:58Cardinals or they'll never be anybody that comes close to you?
- 15:01How you despise the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 15:04The Brewers closing the gap. The Brewers have absolutely
- 15:08closed the gap when they held the L flag up at the end of the
- 15:11series. I just thought it was a low
- 15:13class move. Have fun.
- 15:16I thought it would have been a cooler move if they would have
- 15:19gotten AW flag and held that up and commandeered it like it's
- 15:23theirs. That would have been super cool.
- 15:26Super cool. They didn't have the smarts to
- 15:29do that. The L flag, Good for them.
- 15:32They haven't won since. And now, as I said to my dear
- 15:36friend here, Ryan in our studio, they made the list.
- 15:39They are now there with the Packers and the Saint Louis
- 15:43cart. Good stuff, buddy Capital.
- 15:45We'll talk to you next week. Thank you.
- 15:46What you do for us? Appreciate it.
- 15:48Appreciate you. Have a wonderful Wednesday,
- 15:50everybody. Thank you, Kathy.
- 15:52Good to hear from you. David Kaplan as he chimes in
- 15:54from Chicago again, joins us each and every week talking
- 15:59Chicago sports. Not real excited about the
- 16:01Bulls? As he shouldn't be, no.
- 16:03And he'll be watching every single one of those games.
- 16:06Yeah, 82 * a season that is longer.
- 16:10As is your beloved hockey, the Major League Baseball.
- 16:13Because they crown their champion like a couple of days
- 16:15later, right? Well, but the hockey's in week
- 16:17two or three already. 2 Sports. That are longer than the Major
- 16:21League Baseball season. They play 162 in baseball.
- 16:25Yeah, it started in March. Started in March.
- 16:29It is a lot. I I didn't want to push back a
- 16:32cap because it's not him. It's what he believes the front
- 16:35office. About the bears you were
- 16:36talking. About about the tight end
- 16:37position and if they still today, you know.
- 16:40They're making that these, well, you said it.
- 16:41You wouldn't be surprised. It's the Bears.
- 16:43Yeah, because they're a dumb organization led by dumb people
- 16:46that have done dumb things for the better part of four decades.
- 16:48And it's going to continue. Or might win Rookie of the year.
- 16:54It's Laudel has caught 8 passes. Still take love and why?
- 17:00I thought they made a mistake when they did I.
- 17:01Think it was right there with you.
- 17:02Right. I mean, I know you, you thought
- 17:04tight end was probably on their shopping list and you were all
- 17:06over Warren as I think back to, you know, leading up to the
- 17:09draft and that was. The right move?
- 17:11Well, what I wanted was offensive line.
- 17:13Sure, that's what I wanted. But if it was going to be a
- 17:15tight end, there was really. There's one, there's one.
- 17:18The guy that we saw all last the last two seasons dominate was
- 17:21the best tight end as versatile, a skill set that would work
- 17:24perfectly with Ben John, Ben Johnson trying to do.
- 17:28Look what he's doing now for the Colts.
- 17:30Colts are legit, man. Are they though?
- 17:33I kind of just contradict myself in the same sense I looked at
- 17:37their schedule as to whom they've beaten.
- 17:40Is is am I falling into this trap looking at the record?
- 17:46But but look who they've beaten. They've beaten Miami.
- 17:49They got lucky to beat Denver. I don't care what anybody says
- 17:52that you never see that call, right?
- 17:53They missed the field goal that should have been lost, but they
- 17:55didn't because of Wazirique. You're a crook.
- 17:59They beat Tennessee, Stinky lost to the Chargers.
- 18:02Chargers aren't good. Beat the Raiders.
- 18:04Horrible. I give them more credit than you
- 18:08do for the Broncos win because it wasn't about that final play.
- 18:11They almost, they had 200 more yards of offense and the Broncos
- 18:14did in that game. So again, taking away the final
- 18:17play, I think the Colts were the right team in that one.
- 18:20Just need a little bit of help to get there in the end to push
- 18:23it over there. But outside of that, you're
- 18:24right, there isn't. They're going to have
- 18:26opportunities because do you see what the Colts still have
- 18:28coming? Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Atlantic
- 18:31Kansas City, Houston. Go go after the bye week after.
- 18:33The bye week? OK, here's what they finished
- 18:35their final seven games at Chiefs.
- 18:37Tough home to Houston. Great defense.
- 18:41At Jax Rd. Divisional game at Seat Seattle.
- 18:46Yeah, tell you, how about that road trip?
- 18:47Yeah, good luck. Home to the Niners.
- 18:50They win. Home to Jax at Houston.
- 18:56There's five more wins there. Yeah, there's five more.
- 18:59That's eleven wins on the year. But.
- 19:01And again, you said are they for real?
- 19:03What does that mean? Are they real?
- 19:05Can they win a Super Bowl? No.
- 19:07Can they get to the AFC championship game?
- 19:09Possibly. Need the right path.
- 19:12Only to inevitably to be dispatched by Oh God, time for
- 19:17another keyword. Really frustrates you.
- 19:20It does. It's.
- 19:21Every single year. Well, if you just go in
- 19:24expecting it, it goes a whole lot better for you.
- 19:28Instead of talking, Yeah, instead of talking yourself in
- 19:31circles and nuts and and just divvy.
- 19:33Oh, this is no, it's not the year.
- 19:35Gift heat is still there. This little baseball nugget, I
- 19:39don't know how how it's going to fit in has nothing to do with
- 19:41what we're talking about. Do you know Jack Dreyer's death
- 19:44pitched in major leagues? I did not.
- 19:45I didn't either. Not very long.
- 19:48Pitched 2 years in the majors. This, the strike year I think
- 19:51was his last year. Didn't realize that, not at all.
- 19:55Well, and it's funny too, I mean.
- 19:56Went to you and I. Dad did OK.
- 19:59Grew up in Ames. Yeah.
- 20:01I didn't know that either. How do we not know more about
- 20:03this family? No, not necessarily the family,
- 20:05but specifically Jack. Right, Right.
- 20:08I. I mean talked about him.

- 22:31I, I, I don't know how you can bring that up.
- 22:33I mean, I I was told for years and years that this was just
- 22:35something that mattered. Eastern Iowa Why she graduates
- 22:38from Iowa Trend It's over for her.
- 22:41I've been I was told that a lot of people, mostly in Story
- 22:45County, but still just a local story.
- 22:48She's just flash in a pan. Just wait.
- 22:51Soon it'll be over. It's unbelievable.
- 22:54I guess the next athlete on there #13 you got to go all the
- 22:57way down to find Coco Goff, but all executives, owners,
- 23:01etcetera, and then #4 is Caitlin Clark.
- 23:04Anyways, let's. And she didn't play this year.
- 23:06Hardly. Yeah.
- 23:08Unreal. Let's have a healthy year.
- 23:10Yeah, I'd love to see it. Apparently in her rookie year,
- 23:12she made $8.1 million in endorsements, etcetera,
- 23:18etcetera. And what, 70,000?
- 23:20What was the salary? John Bowen Camp, do you
- 23:22remember? Is that like 70 as a rookie?
- 23:24It is a 5 figure number. It is a 5 figure number.
- 23:28By the way, was was the terrible WNBA commissioner on that?
- 23:31I haven't found her yet. OK.
- 23:34Yeah, I would. I would hope.
- 23:35Not Asia. Wilson is on there.
- 23:36She's influential, that's for sure.
- 23:39Good. That's not what this list is
- 23:40about. How?
- 23:41Who now? What was the owner's name?
- 23:43I wonder if she's pissed off that all of the WNBA players not
- 23:47before remember her. Billy Jean King is still on
- 23:50there. Good for her.
- 23:51Yeah, anyways. Part part owner of the Dodgers,
- 23:54by the way. Oh gosh, Billy.
- 23:56Jean King, any way to get? I was, I said to Trent when we
- 23:59started the show, I want to find a way to not talk baseball
- 24:02'cause, you know, I'm a Blue Jays fan, John, I knew.
- 24:04Yeah. And I'm not feeling really good
- 24:07about my squad. So I'll ask you this, OK?
- 24:10If you were trying to beat the Dodgers, how would you get to
- 24:18the get to the start if there is such a?
- 24:20Thing bomb threat, pray get out of the get.
- 24:24Get to the middle, get to the get get a starter out of the
- 24:27game and it's. Early, right?
- 24:29Yeah. Yeah, you know, but I mean once,
- 24:32once those guys get past 6, which is kind of shocking as bad
- 24:36as they were this year. It really is.
- 24:39And now all the sudden it's all figured out, you know?
- 24:41So I knew they would be fine, you know that.
- 24:45Yeah, if you've been saying you, you say that every single week.
- 24:47Enjoy that all the time. Yes.
- 24:49Have they announced who's going to I?
- 24:51I have to assume it's Blake Snell, correct?
- 24:53It's. It's going to be the same
- 24:55rotation, same as in the NFCS. Yeah, it'll be Snell, Snell,
- 24:59Yamamoto, Glasno, Otani and then the parade.
- 25:04So that that's what. So so the parade comes after
- 25:07game four. That's.
- 25:08What you think exactly? Yeah.
- 25:10I kind of feel the same way I do.
- 25:12I kind of do. Was that as well as you've seen
- 25:14them? I mean, they just the Brewers
- 25:16won more games than anybody in baseball and and they got off to
- 25:20a good start in what one game didn't they?
- 25:21Didn't they take Yamamoto dupe in the first inning?
- 25:24Is that as well as they played all year?
- 25:27Yeah. Oh, God, yes.
- 25:28I mean, I mean, I mean, they did enough good things in the series
- 25:32with the Phillies to win that. And but I mean, just the the
- 25:36timely hitting, the the the pitching and when they had to go
- 25:40to the bullpen, those guys stepped up, you know, and I
- 25:43mean, it was that was as complete as they have been
- 25:46since, you know, early April when and even then they weren't,
- 25:50you know, then. So, yeah, I mean, it's I mean,
- 25:53they were. And I knew what they did to the
- 25:55Brewers. I just kind of had the feeling
- 25:57that was coming because like the Brewers had cooked that bullpen
- 26:01in the five games against the Cubs and and then all of a
- 26:05sudden, you know, they threw as many guys they didn't Game 1.
- 26:08And I remember thinking that game one of like, this is going
- 26:11to be over in 4. You know, it just felt that way.
- 26:13It's just because you were getting into that bullpen and
- 26:16then and, you know, in the long series, you can't go to the
- 26:20bullpen that many times and you know, and it's it worked out.
- 26:25So, I mean, one thing about the Dodgers I was saying is they
- 26:29have figured out that you do need good starting pitching in
- 26:31the posting. And I mean, they've gotten away
- 26:33with it a couple of times, but but this is, you know, this is
- 26:37this is probably the best, this is the best rotation I can ever
- 26:40remember A-Team having that they have had in, in, in the World
- 26:44Series, going even back into the, you know, probably back in.
- 26:46I mean, those, those, those teams in the 70s had really good
- 26:49rotations. But you know, yeah, I mean.
- 26:53And Sasaki was supposed to be a starter.
- 26:55I mean, he's in the minor leagues.
- 26:57What? June, July, August, most of
- 26:59September, he comes back and now he's an unhittable closer.
- 27:03Is that his role going forward? Will they try to get him back to
- 27:05a starter? I think they'll try to get him
- 27:08back to be in the start. And I mean, I think this was
- 27:11this was OK. Look, this is break the glass in
- 27:14case of emergency. And you know, I mean, because I
- 27:17because I don't think you're going to pay him that kind of
- 27:19money to be a close. All right, Although they aren't
- 27:21really paying him that much money, I guess so, you know, so
- 27:26we'll see what happens. It could be a good series, I
- 27:28think, and I'm ready for. It got a parade after game four.
- 27:32That's not a good series. That's a dismantling.
- 27:35Well, like I said, that's a good series in my mind.
- 27:38You know me, I'm greed. Yeah, you are.
- 27:40Yeah. Our resident Dodger fan John
- 27:43Bowen Camp John, let's talk about your beat.
- 27:45That is the Iowa Hawk guys with The Associated Press and a
- 27:49football team that found a way. There were poor moments against
- 27:52Penn State and they dug out of it, figured it out.
- 27:55Whatever superlative you want to use, they got it done in that
- 27:58football game. Is that telling to you in a game
- 28:01where things are not going right in for a myriad of different
- 28:03reasons that this football team? It kind of goes back to what
- 28:07Kurt said to us in Vegas. He likes his team.
- 28:10He doesn't know. He had a lot of questions, but
- 28:12he likes his team. I think we're seeing why.
- 28:14Did did that tell you something that went against Penn State
- 28:17more than just getting a 2524 win?
- 28:20Really. Yeah.
- 28:20And but I would also say the last two weeks, do you think
- 28:23about when they went into that First off week after that loss
- 28:27to Indiana in a game they should have won and you started feeling
- 28:32OK If they don't play well at Wisconsin, you know, and then if
- 28:35they lose the Pens to Penn stayed at home because, you
- 28:38know, you started you started having started leaving that
- 28:41schedule. Like, I don't know how this is
- 28:43all going to end up. Well, now all of a sudden you're
- 28:44in really good position. So I do think in this, I think
- 28:48they got healthy in the off week.
- 28:51I think they worked on some things in the off week.
- 28:53And I think some guys realized this is our key point in the
- 28:56season. We have to turn this around.
- 28:58And they have, I mean, so far and and so that win the other
- 29:02night was they found a way to win.
- 29:05I mean, you didn't. And you know, Kirk made some
- 29:08decisions that probably weren't they were very UN Kirk like at
- 29:12times and and it cost them a little bit and yet they still
- 29:16found a way to win. So I think it says a lot about
- 29:19this team. I think it says a lot about this
- 29:20coaching staff. He was just to me, it was it was
- 29:23a really good win that I think maybe we look back on in a few
- 29:27weeks and realize this was when it all turned around.
- 29:29Yep. As good as the game was, it
- 29:33maybe one of the things that stuck with me and still to this
- 29:35day was Halos question in the postgame.
- 29:38John, you were part of it and, and, and, and Kirk kind of
- 29:42breaking down when he was answering that question about,
- 29:44you know, his team bailing him out.
- 29:48I thought that that resonated with me.
- 29:50John, what was the room like? Did the could everybody tell
- 29:53that, you know, that that question struck, I guess struck
- 29:57a nerve. But when I say struck a nerve,
- 29:58that sounds like in a bad way. It wasn't, but it certainly, it
- 30:02certainly resonated with Kirk. Well, no, it did, because I
- 30:06think he did realize they built. That.
- 30:08Because I mean, you think back to the the field goal, which I
- 30:12questioned why they tried it the second time after the first one
- 30:15fell short. And then they had called the
- 30:17timeouts together the chance. And so I questioned why they did
- 30:21that. Then you go into the third
- 30:22quarter, they get the touchdown and instead of kicking the extra
- 30:25point, he goes for two, you know, which I felt was, you
- 30:28know, he always talks about chasing points.
- 30:30I felt like they were chasing points and and then you then it
- 30:34forced you then go for two in the fourth quarter and he and he
- 30:37didn't get. So I think he realized that, you
- 30:41know, a couple of decisions there started to snowball and
- 30:44his guys figured out a way to win that game and and the day
- 30:48out. Is there going to be a lot of
- 30:50question to him after that game if it got away from them?
- 30:55John, we go to this week, Minnesota Gopher team that
- 30:59played really well on Friday night, but they haven't played
- 31:02well on the road. You look, a week previous they
- 31:05struggled and probably shouldn't be Purdue the week after that.
- 31:09Is the point spread telling us something here?
- 31:11Because right away I'm like, that's way too many points.
- 31:13This thing's going to be ugly. Is the point spread maybe
- 31:16telling us something this week that the Minnesota team we saw
- 31:18Friday maybe wasn't the real Gopher team?
- 31:21Right. And I, and I think people are, I
- 31:23think maybe people are kind of buying into Iowa now.
- 31:26And it goes back to what I said that it feels like this last two
- 31:30weeks, it's turned around a little bit.
- 31:31Plus you're at home, you know, and plus you're coming off a big
- 31:34win and plus you don't know what, what, what Minnesota can
- 31:38do. So I, I do think that is
- 31:40reflective. I haven't seen what Clayton's
- 31:41line is, but it does seem like it is kind of reflective of
- 31:46people are kind of buying into this team now.
- 31:49And so it's a big game for them. You know, it's one of those
- 31:52games you don't want to make a mistake and lose because you
- 31:55just then you just threw into the trash everything you've done
- 31:58the last couple weeks. So I mean, it is an important
- 32:01game for them to kind of keep that momentum going.
- 32:04Indeed it is. Last thing for me, John, because
- 32:07I'm pretty sure you've covered every event at the Iowa Speedway
- 32:10since they cut the ribbon to open the place.
- 32:14How big of a blow not have an IndyCar there in 2026?
- 32:19I don't think it's it's as big as I don't think it's as big as
- 32:23it would have been if it would have been like the schedule from
- 32:26a few years ago when your NASCAR offering was just the Xfinity
- 32:30and Trucks here. But you've got cup coming back
- 32:33and and you've been able to sell out two years of Cup.
- 32:37It's disappointing. I love the Indy cars.
- 32:40I always did. I love I love the way they run
- 32:42things. But I think they were very
- 32:44unhappy at high V pulling out of its sponsorship.
- 32:48And I think that kind of set things in motion for them to go
- 32:52somewhere else. And I even get in the long run,
- 32:53they're going to miss it. They're going to miss coming
- 32:56there because they like it was it was good Oval for racing
- 33:00until they paved last year, paid some of that spot and it kind of
- 33:04messed the Indy cars up a little bit.
- 33:06But I think they're going to regret not being there and then
- 33:10maybe they come back in a couple years if they can get sponsored.
- 33:13But like I said, I think they were mad about Hyvee.
- 33:15I think they just kind of laughed.
- 33:17You know, OK, we got this one year on the schedule.
- 33:19Let's go, let's go there and then figure something out.
- 33:22But it's not a big blow because like I said, you got coming in
- 33:25and that's always a big weekend. It's a good weekend for it next
- 33:29year and you know, I, like I said, I'm going to miss them.
- 33:33But in the long run, you've got, you know, you've got the bigger
- 33:37series here, so. John, one final thing for me,
- 33:41saw you last week over at Basketball Media Day.
- 33:43Good to see, wasn't a surprise. I've told my piece already to
- 33:48coach his son there. I think it's a mistake just
- 33:52because of the Iowa DNA, but so there's a lot of more online
- 33:56chatter about him being part of the team.
- 33:58Do you see it as a concern or is it only a concern?
- 34:01If we see McCollum actually playing his son out there, then
- 34:05it becomes a concern. Well, how would you read into
- 34:07that? That's what it becomes a
- 34:08concern. I mean, I, if he's sitting at
- 34:11the end of the bench and, and he's not playing or if he gets 4
- 34:15or 5 minutes a game, you know, in, in a mop up role, I, it's
- 34:19not going to matter. I mean it, you know, I mean, if
- 34:21he's playing, then he must be in my mind.
- 34:24If he's playing, then he deserves to be out.
- 34:27You know, I mean, he's not going to play him unless he deserves
- 34:30to be out there. And so I I just don't see it
- 34:33being a problem because this is I think this is a really good
- 34:35basketball and I think it's really it's really top heavy.
- 34:39So I don't see him really contributing much this year.
- 34:42I think it's just an opportunity for him to be coached by his dad
- 34:46to be, you know, because I mean, he was going to go to Drake
- 34:48apparently before all this happened.
- 34:51It's not that big a deal on my mind.
- 34:53I mean, like I said, I think they've got a pretty deep
- 34:55rotation and and I they're, they're pretty set.
- 34:58Right now in what they're going to do John Bowen camp good
- 35:01stuff, John. Appreciate this.
- 35:03Good luck to your Dodgers. I hope I hope it's a good
- 35:06series. I really.
- 35:07Do I? I do too, but next time I talk
- 35:09to you will be world champ. Probably so and my and my
- 35:12betting account will have more money in it than it does because
- 35:14there you go. I jumped on board too.
- 35:16Thank you, pal. Good to talk to you, John.
- 35:17We'll talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 35:18See ya. Yep, have a good one.
- 35:20Yep, John Bowen Camp, Associated Press, I would call it
- 35:23hoops.com, etcetera, etcetera. For John.
- 35:26He's a good dude, good guy, Been on the beat a long, long time.
- 35:30I'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 35:31And Speaking of beats for a long time, I meant to say this early,
- 35:35I get this in early. I didn't know where to put Aaron
- 35:37Kiernan. Retiring at WHO?
- 35:39I saw. That well done Aaron Kiernan 30
- 35:41years either at KCCI where she started and then it's been at
- 35:45WHO for a long time and good for her and for all the right
- 35:49reasons too right Stay home with family and not the she wasn't
- 35:52pushed out by any means. She this is her own decision.
- 35:55Well done Aaron Kiernan, you did a good job over there.
- 35:58And a very popular news anchor at WHO 13?
- 36:02Yeah, for our statewide audience.
- 36:04I mean, it's always funny because when I came here,
- 36:06there's somebody named. So I'm like, I don't know who
- 36:07these people are. And statewide audience, if you
- 36:10didn't, Aaron did a really good job, worked on some really
- 36:12important stories. You think about it, she has kids
- 36:15basically my age, 10 and 7, minor 10 and 6.
- 36:17And to think that basically every night you got the 5:00
- 36:21news and the 6:00 news and the 10:00 news.
- 36:24You know what my nights look like.
- 36:26You know us running around and to miss that, it's got to be
- 36:29tough. No, without a doubt, but hanging
- 36:32it up. I think November.
- 36:33I've read in the register November 24th, sometime in
- 36:36November, but tip of the cap to you, Erin Kiernan.
- 36:39Well done. Miller and Condon back with
- 36:41Trent's plays of the day. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 36:43Network. I'm Miller and Condon in our
- 36:45final couple of minutes. Circus Sports sponsors these
- 36:47minutes, Trent's plays of the day.
- 36:51So no football tonight for me. Playing football?
- 36:53Are you not betting football? You know, I watched a way too
- 36:56much of that garbage last night. You did?
- 36:58Well, Yeah, I had to bet on it. The game that went to overtime.
- 37:01The law Tech, Western Kentucky. Yeah, right.
- 37:03There are at least two programs we kind of know.
- 37:05God, they're awful. It's just.
- 37:08And then did Western Kentucky go for two before they had two and
- 37:11one it that way? That's what I.
- 37:12Thought it was OT #1 la Tech had the ball first they score, then
- 37:18Western Kentucky scored one for two to win it.
- 37:20Let's get out of here and end this garbage and like conning,
- 37:23watch something else because this sucks.
- 37:25Got it with you got you. It was so bad and then I started
- 37:28going through the numbers again for the two games tonight and
- 37:30I'm like, it's just it's awful football.
- 37:33It is so bad. So instead almost bet on the
- 37:37awful NBA. Here we go 2 dogs tonight.
- 37:40Give me the Heat getting 8 1/2 on the road at Orlando.
- 37:44I will grab the points as well with the Blazers against our T
- 37:47Wolves. There's a nine out there.
- 37:48Would you like that? I I would, absolutely.
- 37:51Got 9. Oh, that's pretty good.
- 37:53I grabbed earlier this morning. It was 8 1/2 so already got the
- 37:56wrong in the number. We're off to a roaring start
- 37:57here in our NBA betting. I'm also going to fade the Wild
- 38:00tonight. How about that?
- 38:01We're going against Minnesota. They play early.
- 38:03Right, it's hate week, so I'm going against Minnesota this
- 38:06week. I like it.
- 38:07Trail Blazers and the Devils tonight, my first hockey bet of
- 38:10the season. Way you go.
