- 0:30Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:33folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:36story. I'm your host Dustin.
- 0:39Today we are back in the book of Turkish folklore written down by
- 0:42Ignez Kunios. If you are new to this podcast,
- 0:46a parry is a magic spirit somewhat akin to a fairy.
- 0:51Today we have the story of the Crow Perry, which follows a
- 0:54young man who follows in his father's footsteps and joins his
- 0:57profession. Will there be a happily ever
- 0:59after? Let's find out.
- 1:02OK, let's begin. The Crow Perry.
- 1:09There once was a man who had a son.
- 1:11The son spent the whole day in the woods catching birds, which
- 1:14he sold. One day the father died and the
- 1:18boy was left alone in the world. He did not know what his
- 1:21father's occupation had been until one day, looking through
- 1:25his father's things, he found a bird trap.
- 1:29Picking it up, he went to the forest and set it in a tree.
- 1:33Soon a crow flew by and landed on the tree and was caught.
- 1:39The boy climbed up and was about to seize the bird when it begged
- 1:43him to set it free in exchange for a much more beautiful and
- 1:46more valuable bird. It pleaded so earnestly that at
- 1:50length the boy liberated it. He set the trap again, and sat
- 1:55down at the foot of the tree to wait.
- 1:58Very soon another bird flew to the tree and was caught in a
- 2:01trap. The boy was astonished at its
- 2:05beauty. Never in his life had he seen
- 2:07such a lovely bird looking at it from all sides.
- 2:11He caressed it and was about to carry it home when the crow flew
- 2:15near him and said, Take this bird to the Potty Shah, he will
- 2:19buy it. So the boy put the bird in the
- 2:21cage and took it to the palace. On seeing the beautiful little
- 2:25creature, the potty Shah was so pleased that he gave the boy
- 2:29more gold than he knew what to do with.
- 2:32The bird was placed in a golden cage and the potty Shah amused
- 2:35himself with it day and night. The potty Shah had a lala who
- 2:41was envious of the boy's fortune and racked his brains to think
- 2:44of a plan for depriving him of it.
- 2:47One day he went to the potty Shah and said how beautiful this
- 2:51bird would look in an ivory kiosk.
- 2:55But Lala answered the potty Shah, where could I get enough
- 2:59ivory? He who brought you the bird can
- 3:03also bring you the ivory, said the crafty Lala.
- 3:07The potty Shah sent for the bird catcher and commanded him to
- 3:09bring enough ivory to build a kiosk for the bird.
- 3:13But Potty Shah protested the youth.
- 3:16Where can I get so much ivory? That is your business, answered
- 3:20the king. I will give you 40 days to
- 3:23collect it. If it is not here by that time,
- 3:25I'll cut your head off in deep trouble.
- 3:30The youth left Mnemonic's presence.
- 3:33While he was absorbed in thought, the crow appeared and
- 3:36asked him the cause of his grief.
- 3:38The bird catcher told the crow what misfortune the little bird
- 3:41had caused him. Worry not, returned the crow,
- 3:46but go to the potty Shah and ask him for 40 wagons of wine.
- 3:51The youth went to the palace and obtained the wine.
- 3:54As he was coming away with it, the crow flew up and said Near
- 3:58the forest are 40 drinking troughs.
- 4:00All the elephants come there to drink.
- 4:02Go and pour the wine into the troughs, and then, when all the
- 4:06elephants are lying stupefied on the ground, cut off their tusks
- 4:09and take them to the king. The youth followed the crow's
- 4:13instructions and took the 40 wagons loaded with ivory back to
- 4:17the palace. The king was so delighted with
- 4:20the quantity of tusks that he rewarded the bird catcher
- 4:23lavishly. The kiosk was soon built and the
- 4:27bird was put in it. The beautiful creature hopped
- 4:31about joyously in its new home, but it did not sing.
- 4:36If it's master were here, suggested the wily lala, it
- 4:40would have the desire to sing Who knows who its owner was and
- 4:45where he can be found, Answered the king sadly.
- 4:49He who brought the ivory can surely discover the owner of the
- 4:51bird, said the lala. So the patishah called the youth
- 4:56and ordered him to find out who the former owner of the bird
- 4:59was. How should I know who its owner
- 5:02was? Said the bird catcher.
- 5:04I caught it in the forest. That is your problem, returned
- 5:07the king. If you do not find him, you
- 5:10shall be put to death. I'll give you 40 days to find
- 5:13him. The youth went home and wept
- 5:16most bitterly. But the Crow appeared and asked
- 5:19why he cried. The poor youth told his story.
- 5:24That trifle is not worth so many tears, replied the Crow.
- 5:28Go immediately to the king and request a large ship, large
- 5:32enough to accommodate 40 maidens, with a garden and a
- 5:35very beautiful bath on board. The bird catcher went to the
- 5:40Potty Shah and told him what was required for the voyage.
- 5:44The ship was built according to his wishes.
- 5:46The youth climbed aboard, and while he was considering whether
- 5:49he should set sail to the right or to the left, the crow once
- 5:53more appeared. Always sail to the right, he
- 5:56instructed, and don't stop until you come to a very high
- 6:00mountain. At the foot of this mountain
- 6:031240 parries. When they see your ship they
- 6:06will all desire to inspect it. However, you must only let the
- 6:11Queen come on board, for she is the owner of the little bird.
- 6:16While you are showing her the ship, set sail and do not stop
- 6:20again until you arrive home. So that you sailed away in his
- 6:25ship, always sailing to the right until he reached the
- 6:27mountain. There on the shore the 40 Parrys
- 6:31were taking a walk, and as soon as they spied the ship they
- 6:35wished to inspect it. The Queen begged the bird
- 6:38catcher to let them see the interior of the vessel, as they
- 6:41had never seen a ship before. Only the Queen was permitted to
- 6:45come on board, and a rowboat was sent to the shore to fetch her.
- 6:50The fairy was delighted with the beautiful ship.
- 6:53She walked across the deck, promenaded in the garden, and
- 6:56seeing the bath, exclaimed. Since I am here, I will also
- 7:00bathe. So she went into the bath, and
- 7:03while she was there on the ship they set sail.
- 7:06By the time the Parry had finished her bath, the ship was
- 7:09already far out at sea. Hurrying on to the deck, she saw
- 7:14that they were almost out of sight of the land, and broke
- 7:16into loud cries of despair. What would happen to her?
- 7:21Where were they taking her? The youth, hoping to console
- 7:27her, told her that she was going to meet some good people and go
- 7:30to a royal palace. Soon they reached the town where
- 7:34the ship had set out from, and the Potty Shah was told of the
- 7:37vessel's safe arrival. The fairy was brought to the
- 7:41palace, and when she passed the bird's kiosk, it began to sing
- 7:45so ravishingly that everyone hearing it was enraptured.
- 7:51The fairy was now more at ease, and she was completely reassured
- 7:55at meeting the Potty Shah, who admired her so much that he was
- 7:58unable to take his eyes off of her.
- 8:01The marriage of the Potty Shah to the fairy took place soon
- 8:04afterwards, and the king was now the happiest man in the world.
- 8:08But the Lala was bursting with rage.
- 8:12One day the queen was taken very ill.
- 8:15The medicine that would cure her illness was at home in the fairy
- 8:18palace, and the Lala promptly advised that the bird catcher
- 8:22should be sent to fetch it. Accordingly he embarked, but
- 8:26when he set sail, the crow appeared and inquired where he
- 8:29was bound. The youth replied that the queen
- 8:32was ill and that he was going to her fairy palace to fetch her
- 8:34medicine. You will find the palace on the
- 8:38other side of the mountain, said the crow. 2 lions guard the
- 8:42door. Take this feather with you, and
- 8:45if you stroke their lips with it, they will do you no harm.
- 8:48The youth accepted the feather and set sail.
- 8:53Casting anchor before the mountain, he soon saw the
- 8:55palace. He went up to the entrance where
- 8:58the two lions stood, and when he stroked their lips with the
- 9:01feather, they withdrew. The fairies, seeing the young
- 9:06man, suspected that their queen was ill, so they gave him the
- 9:09medicine, and he returned home without delay.
- 9:13As he entered the Perry's apartment with the medicine, the
- 9:16crow alighted on his shoulder, and thus they both stood before
- 9:19the patient. The queen had already nearly
- 9:22expired, but the moment she took the medicine she revived,
- 9:27opening her eyes and seeing the bird catcher with the crow up on
- 9:30his shoulder. She addressed the latter and
- 9:32said, You hateful bird, have you no pity for this poor young man,
- 9:37that you have caused him so much suffering?
- 9:41Then the queen told her husband that this crow had once been her
- 9:44fairy servant, whom she changed into a crow as punishment for
- 9:47her negligence. But now, said she, addressing
- 9:51the bird, I pardon you, seeing that you still love me.
- 9:56On this the crow shook itself, and behold, a lovely maiden
- 10:00stood before the bird catcher. In accordance with the Queen's
- 10:04wish, the king gave the crow Perry in marriage to the bird
- 10:07catcher. The false lala was dismissed
- 10:10from his post, and the young bird catcher was made vizier.
- 10:14Thus they all lived happily ever after.
- 10:18The End. Wow, this story very much rhymes
- 10:52with the Armenian story of just a month ago.
- 10:54Of course this happens when cultures have contact with one
- 10:57another and it also has a bit of a fish Perry story from Turkey.
- 11:02And I like how this story came to an end with no one but the
- 11:05jealous La La losing his job. It was a fun story and I look
- 11:08forward to many more and as I still have 28 more stories from
- 11:12this book, I might finish it sometime or in the twenty 30s.
- 11:17And the podcast shout out is to the Egyptian History Podcast.
- 11:22This is a wonderful podcast hosted by Dominic and it
- 11:24showcases the long and storied history of Egypt.
- 11:27Just like it says on the 10, you get so much information about
- 11:31the houses, the people, the culture, the accurate
- 11:33pronunciations of the Egyptian Pharaoh's names and their
- 11:36meanings. This podcast is so much fun that
- 11:39I highly recommend it, especially if you had a whole
- 11:43Egyptian obsession when you were a kid.
- 11:45So go and give a show, a listen, a rating and a review.
- 11:50And the listener shout out is to Johor Baru, Malaysia.
- 11:53Google did a great job of summing up this city that it is
- 11:56just outside of Singapore. So here is what they said.
- 11:59Johor Baru, capital of the Malaysian state of Johor, sits
- 12:03at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula with a Causeway across
- 12:07the Straits of Johor connecting it to Singapore.
- 12:09It's a gateway for exploration of that island nation.
- 12:13On Jahor Baru's waterfront is Istana Bisar, a royal palace
- 12:18built by the Sultan Abu Baker in 1866 that now houses the Royal
- 12:22Abu Baker Museum. And I would love to go and visit
- 12:27there and Singapore one day. So to my listener in Jahor Baru,
- 12:31I say terima kasi Dan salamat malam.
- 12:35Thank you. Good night.
