- 0:59Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Oh, bad network network, tough service in the sticks.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Sorry about it, but anyway, everyone wished Todd Father a
- 1:11Speaker 3: happy birthday. If you're watching live in the chat or
- 1:14Speaker 3: afterward too, and throw a subscribe on foul Territory YouTube
- 1:17Speaker 3: channel or wherever you get your podarg out. Before we
- 1:23Speaker 3: jump into some rule change updates, we just want to
- 1:27Speaker 3: throw this out there. FT Spring Training Tour is beautiful.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It starts on Tuesday at Royals Camp. Then we're at
- 1:33Speaker 3: Guardians Camp. We talked to the A's on Thursday, Friday
- 1:36Speaker 3: with the Dodgers, Saturday with the Mariners, Sunday with the Rangers,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and for the rest of the calendar. You can look
- 1:42Speaker 3: on your screen if you're listening to us via podcast platform.
- 1:46Speaker 3: You can look on the screen when you get home
- 1:48Speaker 3: or when you're not driving.
- 1:49Speaker 2: If you're driving.
- 1:50Speaker 3: We have a really beautiful calendar with palm trees, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'll read week by week as we go. It goes
- 1:57Speaker 3: into March. It's really almost a five weeks tour. Aj
- 2:01Speaker 3: is getting ready to fly out to Arizona. So more
- 2:04Speaker 3: details as we go along, and we'll share this calendar
- 2:06Speaker 3: later in the show. Now let's go over the ABS
- 2:10Speaker 3: Challenge system information that has been shared and Jeremy running
- 2:14Speaker 3: point behind the scenes.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Here you can just start to put up what we have.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I'll read it to set the scene for our guys,
- 2:20Speaker 3: a few little intricacies of the rules, and then we
- 2:24Speaker 3: can react. So this from Alden Gonzalez. New Wrinkle with
- 2:27Speaker 3: MLB implementing the ABS Challenge system for the regular season
- 2:30Speaker 3: in twenty twenty six. In extra innings, teams will have
- 2:33Speaker 3: at least one ABS challenge. So if a team has
- 2:37Speaker 3: zero after nine, boom, you get one for the tenth.
- 2:40Speaker 3: If you lose that one in the tenth, you get
- 2:42Speaker 3: one again for the eleventh inning. So that puts you
- 2:45Speaker 3: in a position where, of course, if you feel like
- 2:48Speaker 3: you got screwed on a pitch, you didn't run out,
- 2:50Speaker 3: you didn't have to save, you got another one that
- 2:52Speaker 3: pops up per extra inning. Let's stop there for a moment, actually,
- 2:55Speaker 3: so we can react to it, and then we'll keep
- 2:56Speaker 3: going with some of the other rule implementation pod fither
- 3:00Speaker 3: sounds good to me, right, You get a little extra
- 3:02Speaker 3: something when you're an extras where, of course every pitch
- 3:05Speaker 3: counts throughout the game, but one pitch could decide the game,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and you don't want to be without a challenge.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and I.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Think you'll see during those innings, you're gonna see a
- 3:14Speaker 5: challenge every inning.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And excuse me, it's integral too.
- 3:19Speaker 5: At the same time, it's like that first pitch, all
- 3:22Speaker 5: of a sudden, am I going to use it? You know,
- 3:24Speaker 5: stolen base attempts that have said, for example, I don't
- 3:28Speaker 5: know it's gonna be hard, but at the same token,
- 3:30Speaker 5: I think it's the right decision because you want to
- 3:33Speaker 5: get it right, and I think that's the biggest part
- 3:35Speaker 5: of baseball. You want to get it right, especially late
- 3:38Speaker 5: in the game when a run or a pitch or
- 3:42Speaker 5: you know, a certain kind of ordeal that happens during
- 3:45Speaker 5: the game is right. And you see that happen in
- 3:48Speaker 5: other sports too, where they have you know, the same
- 3:51Speaker 5: kind of deal. You lose a time out or whatever
- 3:53Speaker 5: it is, but the focus is on getting it right.
- 3:55Speaker 5: And I think this is this is the first start
- 3:58Speaker 5: of it and the exciting part of it because you're like,
- 4:01Speaker 5: people are gonna be watching the like challenge it though,
- 4:03Speaker 5: oh they should have challenged it back boom, and then
- 4:05Speaker 5: next thing you know, they save it or they lose it,
- 4:07Speaker 5: whatever it is. So yeah, I think it's the right call,
- 4:10Speaker 5: and I think that's how it should be.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I completely agree.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I think at the end, I mean, I think at
- 4:15Speaker 6: the end of the game is when you have to
- 4:16Speaker 6: get it right. It's that's the whole point we're not
- 4:19Speaker 6: looking for. And if you look at the numbers, like
- 4:22Speaker 6: in the minor leagues, I think it's fifty percent challenged
- 4:26Speaker 6: fit position players fifty percent were right, Like I think
- 4:29Speaker 6: in the big leagues in spring training it was like
- 4:30Speaker 6: fifty two percent. This is just taking care of the
- 4:33Speaker 6: egregious calls. This is taking care of the agreed people
- 4:36Speaker 6: are gonna complain because just like a tiny little tenth
- 4:40Speaker 6: of the ball touched the box. Yeah, okay, but we're
- 4:44Speaker 6: not gonna have egregious calls at the end of the
- 4:46Speaker 6: game when somebody throws one ninety nine two balls off
- 4:49Speaker 6: the plate like, no challenge, boop, take care of it.
- 4:53Speaker 6: That's that's that's the excitement of the extra innings. That's
- 4:56Speaker 6: the excitement of x RA innings plus the challenges.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I love it.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Next up, those challenges are not to be used when
- 5:06Speaker 3: the game gets silly position players in the game. Now,
- 5:12Speaker 3: game's done from the league. This from Jesse Rodgers ABS
- 5:17Speaker 3: Challenge presentation. So they did a presentation to some media.
- 5:21Speaker 3: One interesting thing will be when an ABS challenge and
- 5:24Speaker 3: a video challenge. Oh this is something else, just so
- 5:27Speaker 3: you know. One interesting thing will be when an ABS
- 5:29Speaker 3: challenge and a video challenge occur on the same play.
- 5:33Speaker 3: This could happen on stolen base attempts for example. First,
- 5:36Speaker 3: the ball strike call will be decided then the challenge
- 5:40Speaker 3: on the basis so just some clarification, right Kratz. Little
- 5:44Speaker 3: things are gonna pop up or you're gonna be like what.
- 5:46Speaker 3: So they went over all the scenarios and there it
- 5:48Speaker 3: is for that one sounds.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Right, yeah, if you want.
- 5:52Speaker 6: I mean, I guess people haven't gone to minor league games,
- 5:54Speaker 6: but they really kind of laid this out in the
- 5:56Speaker 6: minor league games, and I think they've I think they've
- 5:59Speaker 6: kind of iron things out because they've tried it, They've
- 6:02Speaker 6: tried different iterations of it, and you know, these are
- 6:05Speaker 6: all things that Now the biggest thing is when there's
- 6:08Speaker 6: like a challenge, let's say a stolen base happens, you
- 6:11Speaker 6: have to wait till that challenge is over. But the
- 6:15Speaker 6: umpire can still judge, oh, were you getting help from
- 6:18Speaker 6: the dugout? Did the dugout relay anything? Because there's a
- 6:21Speaker 6: delay there. So I think it's a it's it's a
- 6:25Speaker 6: part that we'll still have a little bit of consternation,
- 6:28Speaker 6: a little bit of pissed off players in certain situations.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Yeah, and this this is the part where it's like, okay, yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 5: balls are strying. Now you give a little extra time, right, right,
- 6:40Speaker 5: Scott if I'm not mistaken, Will they get extra time
- 6:43Speaker 5: and they have to say it right.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Then and there whether they want to review it? Do
- 6:47Speaker 4: we know that by chance?
- 6:49Speaker 3: Hey, sometimes we do a little game on foul Territory
- 6:53Speaker 3: called role play.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's not what you think.
- 6:55Speaker 3: We're just picking up our phones and we're talking as
- 6:58Speaker 3: if we're somebody in base. But if you'd like that
- 7:01Speaker 3: phone to be a little bit cheaper for making phone calls,
- 7:04Speaker 3: who should you call?
- 7:05Speaker 2: Krats?
- 7:07Speaker 6: Mintmobile because you get all the same speed with a

- 7:47Speaker 3: See mintmobile dot com save money get after at FTFAM. Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 3: so as far as I know and I'm out the
- 7:53Speaker 3: rules expert well crafts, you're probably better than me.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Go ahead and I'll follow.
- 7:56Speaker 1: They don't.
- 7:57Speaker 6: They don't get any extra time, but it's seen at
- 8:01Speaker 6: a different pace because think about just think about nobody
- 8:05Speaker 6: on strike three. You're like strike three are like ah
- 8:09Speaker 6: damn challenge where strike three ball thrown down? Everybody's watching.
- 8:18Speaker 6: There's a little bit of time there to make that decision,
- 8:21Speaker 6: you know, Todd, Like any little bit of timing is different.
- 8:25Speaker 6: You still have to say. You can't go, oh, well,
- 8:27Speaker 6: we're going to challenge the out or safe call at
- 8:30Speaker 6: second base, and then as that's happening, you can't go like, hey,
- 8:34Speaker 6: I want to challenge the strike call too. No, no, no, no,
- 8:36Speaker 6: that doesn't that timing doesn't change. What they're going to
- 8:39Speaker 6: do is if the out call is what would end
- 8:44Speaker 6: the inning and not the strike call or strike three call,
- 8:48Speaker 6: then they challenge that. They show that they take that
- 8:51Speaker 6: challenge first. If it's a strike three call, they don't
- 8:55Speaker 6: challenge second base. Is how is how it works, because
- 8:59Speaker 6: there's no story and base attempt. If strike three is correct,
- 9:03Speaker 6: if it's wrong and it's ball three, then they can
- 9:06Speaker 6: challenge the stolen base. Just little things that that go
- 9:09Speaker 6: with timing, and.
- 9:10Speaker 4: It's gonna happen.
- 9:11Speaker 5: It's gonna happen, and we're gonna be like sure, wait, wait, wait,
- 9:15Speaker 5: who goes first?
- 9:15Speaker 4: Let's go back and read the rules.
- 9:17Speaker 5: So yeah, hopefully it happens in spring training so we
- 9:21Speaker 5: can go over at one time.
- 9:22Speaker 4: I think that would that would help a lot of people.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I agree.
- 9:26Speaker 6: Before you go, Scott, this is twenty fourteen is when
- 9:29Speaker 6: they implemented replay. We are we open the season against
- 9:33Speaker 6: the Rays. I'm with the Blue Jays Salve butere Drew
- 9:37Speaker 6: but Terra's dad. Not anything with Blake Butterra. This is
- 9:40Speaker 6: a different Salve. Butterra is running the replay room with
- 9:43Speaker 6: a couple other guys with the Blue Jays. First batter
- 9:47Speaker 6: of the year, Jose Reyes. He hits one center fielder
- 9:53Speaker 6: I'm not even sure who center fielder in fourteen for
- 9:55Speaker 6: the Rays was, comes in, dives, makes the play. I'm
- 10:00Speaker 6: not sure if we should challenge. Everybody looks over Posey
- 10:03Speaker 6: Rayis pulled his hamstring running the first base on the playoff.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Everybody's panicking literally, first play of the season couldn't have
- 10:14Speaker 6: gone worse.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So, yeah, you wanted to iron out in spring training?
- 10:18Speaker 3: Oh sway, And there are many spring training games to
- 10:23Speaker 3: be able to hash this out with. So you'll pick
- 10:26Speaker 3: up on any issues or any learning experiences for teams. Right,
- 10:30Speaker 3: If anything big pops up, we'll learn about it. Okay,
- 10:33Speaker 3: Next up this I mentioned briefly. No challenging of pitches
- 10:37Speaker 3: when position players are pitching, yes, he put thankfully.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Trash?
- 10:43Speaker 5: What's trash?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Todd?
- 10:47Speaker 6: Todd, are you gonna face the position player this year
- 10:49Speaker 6: in the season? Probably you play every day. You're not
- 10:52Speaker 6: going to count that at bat. Don't worry about it, it
- 10:54Speaker 6: doesn't matter. Just do whatever they want.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I don't like that at all.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I don't like it at all.
- 11:00Speaker 6: This is not This is not people say it's one
- 11:03Speaker 6: or two at bats a season. Okay, Todd, are you
- 11:08Speaker 6: gonna give away in that bat this year?
- 11:10Speaker 4: Never? Never?
- 11:13Speaker 1: I don't like that.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I don't.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I don't agree with that one at all either. Why why,
- 11:18Speaker 5: just why somebody comes into a meeting and they're like, oh, oh,
- 11:21Speaker 5: just so you know, I thought about this one too.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Forget about when position players come in so we can
- 11:26Speaker 5: get the game going faster.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Come on, yeah, I didn't.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Like that, but you guys are also now, in my mind,
- 11:34Speaker 3: discrediting the ump, like, let's not act like it's going
- 11:37Speaker 3: to be a billion wrong calls.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yes, but yes, dude, they they give the they give
- 11:43Speaker 5: those guys a little bit bigger zone because they don't.
- 11:45Speaker 4: As many strikes.
- 11:47Speaker 5: So that's where they need to implement it more with
- 11:49Speaker 5: the position players throwing.
- 11:50Speaker 3: In my opinion, save all your challenges for the twelve
- 11:54Speaker 3: two game, and you can tell Key k her Nandez
- 11:57Speaker 3: that breaking ball is not in the zone.
- 11:59Speaker 5: You I know what, Scott, it's funny that you do say.
- 12:03Speaker 5: It is funny, but at the same time, there's no
- 12:07Speaker 5: time to be like, oh, just because the position player's pitching,
- 12:10Speaker 5: you're not allowed to do a challenge, Like come on, dude,
- 12:13Speaker 5: I struck a guy out and it was probably you know,
- 12:17Speaker 5: the guy came to me and said, oh, it hit
- 12:19Speaker 5: the box. It looked like it was a ball to me,
- 12:20Speaker 5: but he would have definitely challenged that pitch, is what
- 12:23Speaker 5: I'm saying.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Adam Duvall, Sorry.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Okay, fine, fine, I'm with you. You get your challenges.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, two things.
- 12:35Speaker 3: One, you know what I mean, you don't. The league's
- 12:38Speaker 3: not gonna let you. But one, like krat said, every
- 12:40Speaker 3: ab should count. Why because most of the league now
- 12:43Speaker 3: is judged by number systems. The number systems are going, Wait,
- 12:47Speaker 3: there were caveat, there were three at bats against the
- 12:51Speaker 3: position player this year. That doesn't matter.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Right, We're in the same boat.
- 12:55Speaker 3: When we evaluate players. We're trying to be quick, and
- 12:57Speaker 3: we'll throw numbers out. Here's his ops, here's ops plus,
- 13:00Speaker 3: here's a slug. Those numbers don't differentiate for a particular
- 13:04Speaker 3: at bat.
- 13:04Speaker 2: So I'll give you that. That's fair, I understand.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Plus, have we ever had a position player pitching a
- 13:09Speaker 3: game and then, you know, for a team that's getting
- 13:11Speaker 3: smacked and then that team ends up coming back? Are
- 13:15Speaker 3: just counting the game as nothing most of the time, Yes,
- 13:18Speaker 3: but it's not crazy.
- 13:21Speaker 6: This is this is my only example. In twenty seventeen,
- 13:24Speaker 6: I spent the entire season triple A until September.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I got trade to the Yankees, and.
- 13:29Speaker 6: I got six at bats, five at bats against position players,
- 13:34Speaker 6: six at bats against relief big league relievers. I went
- 13:40Speaker 6: six for six against the big league relievers. I went
- 13:44Speaker 6: zero for five against the position players. Now that's me
- 13:47Speaker 6: because you know, I sucked and I was, you know,
- 13:50Speaker 6: trying to do too much when I was playing against
- 13:52Speaker 6: those guys. But it's those at bats counted the exact same.
- 13:57Speaker 6: I remembered it because we tracked it. It was something
- 13:59Speaker 6: fun and funny that we were doing. But when you're
- 14:02Speaker 6: talking about guys' livelihoods in a twelve to two game,
- 14:06Speaker 6: guess who's coming in. Dudes that don't play a lot.
- 14:09Speaker 6: They're not like God, you played every single game. We're
- 14:12Speaker 6: keeping you out there so you can face Chris Heisei
- 14:15Speaker 6: pitching off the mound, so you can face a Uhenio
- 14:17Speaker 6: Suarez throwing the last inning. No, they put the bench
- 14:21Speaker 6: guys in. So that's where that's where my that's where
- 14:25Speaker 6: my argument is.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Okay, I thought that one's going to be ten seconds
- 14:28Speaker 3: and turn it into a few minutes, and I'm good
- 14:30Speaker 3: with that.
- 14:31Speaker 2: This is your show.
- 14:32Speaker 3: I'm just here to point guard it and act like
- 14:35Speaker 3: the occasional uninformed fan.
- 14:38Speaker 2: One more for you. Let's look at the zone itself.
- 14:40Speaker 3: So Jesse Rogers from the presentation, I've been in some
- 14:43Speaker 3: of these before.
- 14:43Speaker 2: The league will put like a.
- 14:45Speaker 3: PowerPoint together, put a lot of slides together, Google slides
- 14:48Speaker 3: whatever it is, and they'll lay it out. It's usually
- 14:51Speaker 3: really well done. I actually really enjoyed those. Jesse said.
- 14:54Speaker 3: The difference in the strike zone now with the challenge system,
- 14:57Speaker 3: it's a little smaller than the umpire called zone. So
- 15:01Speaker 3: we see the ABS zone it is a square. We
- 15:05Speaker 3: see the umpire called zone that is a circle. Hum
- 15:11Speaker 3: different geometry, Krats. Do you want to explain as a
- 15:15Speaker 3: catcher how this is going to affect many lives?
- 15:19Speaker 1: Just learning? Todd?
- 15:22Speaker 6: Basically, it's over hundreds of thousands of pitches and just
- 15:27Speaker 6: over history, umpires call a circular zone. Whether you know
- 15:33Speaker 6: there's there's so many like is it the catchers? Is
- 15:37Speaker 6: it the fact? Is it the fact that you know
- 15:40Speaker 6: your vision is not in a square and it's hard
- 15:43Speaker 6: to see the points. There's so many theories behind it. Essentially,
- 15:47Speaker 6: they came up with that over hundreds of thousands, maybe
- 15:49Speaker 6: even millions of pitches, that that's like the standard zones.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Some guys dev eight smaller, some guys deviate bigger, a
- 15:56Speaker 6: little more down, a little bit more away. Whatever it is, Yes,
- 16:01Speaker 6: it's just gonna be learning. It's gonna take my opinion,
- 16:05Speaker 6: I think it's gonna take two seasons for hitters to
- 16:08Speaker 6: learn this, for hitters to learn that is an actual
- 16:13Speaker 6: square and where that is. And I think hitters will
- 16:15Speaker 6: learn it sooner than sooner than you think. But I
- 16:21Speaker 6: also think hitters are going to just it's gonna take
- 16:25Speaker 6: time to figure that out. And this picture doesn't show it,
- 16:28Speaker 6: but if you read the article it talks about it's
- 16:30Speaker 6: fifty three percent of your height is the top of
- 16:34Speaker 6: the zone. And that's the part that's I think people
- 16:38Speaker 6: are gonna be very confused at and very like unaware of, oh,
- 16:43Speaker 6: well that is a strike, and then there'd be ones
- 16:46Speaker 6: that aren't a strike. And the other part is the
- 16:50Speaker 6: depth of the strike zone, which they've changed since they
- 16:53Speaker 6: started doing the ABS in the minor leagues. Where is
- 16:56Speaker 6: that depth point? Because that depth is they had it
- 17:01Speaker 6: at a different point on the plate, and there was
- 17:03Speaker 6: pitches that were not touching the ground but almost touching
- 17:07Speaker 6: the ground that were hitting the ABS system and it
- 17:09Speaker 6: was called a strike. I think they got it figured out,
- 17:12Speaker 6: but even that's going to be something new, a caveat
- 17:15Speaker 6: a you know, a little intricacy for big leaguers and
- 17:19Speaker 6: big league catchers, big lely hitters and big league catchers
- 17:21Speaker 6: to figure out.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Yeah, and you see the corners were never called really,
- 17:26Speaker 5: so that was on that on that square when the
- 17:30Speaker 5: circle it was more in and out, more up and down.
- 17:34Speaker 5: But you know the four quadrants, the four corners there
- 17:37Speaker 5: never were rarely got called.
- 17:40Speaker 4: So those are the ones. You know.
- 17:42Speaker 5: If you can give me a one box real quick
- 17:44Speaker 5: here by myself, I can show kratzy or cratzy, you
- 17:47Speaker 5: understand if the right hand is up so on this
- 17:50Speaker 5: side no, yeah, this side boom, you're trying to get that.
- 17:54Speaker 5: You're trying to get that top right quadrant here right,
- 17:57Speaker 5: and that's the pitch move over where you can up top.
- 18:00Speaker 5: But your glove keeps going a little. You catch it
- 18:03Speaker 5: and try and bring it back. And now an umpire
- 18:05Speaker 5: sees that and he's like you were trying to steal
- 18:07Speaker 5: a strike when it was actually was a strike. So
- 18:10Speaker 5: Sam is down low in the other other corners. So
- 18:13Speaker 5: just depending on where your position. But I wish they
- 18:17Speaker 5: would take away the box and just just have him
- 18:19Speaker 5: throw it. As a fan, you watch, oh, I think
- 18:21Speaker 5: that got it, you know what I mean, instead of
- 18:24Speaker 5: you know.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Saying, oh, the box didn't get it.
- 18:26Speaker 5: So now it's not a strike because umpires have a
- 18:29Speaker 5: different box than what we're seeing on TV. At least
- 18:31Speaker 5: that's what they told me when I played.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So yeah, that's true.
- 18:35Speaker 3: But I'm going to present the other side as a
- 18:37Speaker 3: fan who did not play anything close to Major League Baseball.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I am obsessed with the box.
- 18:41Speaker 3: If you take the box away from me, or you
- 18:42Speaker 3: even faded a little bit, I'm pissed. I understand that
- 18:46Speaker 3: there's a little bit of variance, but I want to
- 18:48Speaker 3: see the box. I want it there, so it I
- 18:51Speaker 3: think it helps a lot.
- 18:53Speaker 5: I'm not mad that it's there, but if they did
- 18:55Speaker 5: get rid of it, I'd be like, Okay, cool.
- 18:58Speaker 3: That's because you played the game. You're just eye testing.
- 19:01Speaker 3: You know what stuff looks like. And maybe you like
- 19:03Speaker 3: a little bit of surprise in your life where you're like,
- 19:05Speaker 3: I don't know where that clipped. You just had a
- 19:08Speaker 3: birthday party, surprise. I'm not a surprise party guy.
- 19:12Speaker 5: By the way, I had a facial too this morning.
- 19:14Speaker 5: My wife got me a facial man, first time Jersey
- 19:18Speaker 5: Shore facialist.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Thank you girl.
- 19:20Speaker 1: That's it's not your first time you.
- 19:23Speaker 5: No, no, not my first time. But it was a surprise.
- 19:25Speaker 5: I didn't know I was getting it this morning, So we.
- 19:28Speaker 6: Have so many surprises. Ken was in surprise and was
- 19:32Speaker 6: in surprise strike zone. The strike zone is not going
- 19:34Speaker 6: to be a surprise anymore. So yeah, no, I like it,
- 19:38Speaker 6: but no, I would love to have the overhead camp.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I would love to have not the side angle because
- 19:45Speaker 6: watching on TV, I need that box. I need the box.
- 19:48Speaker 6: I love the box. I love when they don't have
- 19:51Speaker 6: the box up. But then it just shows where the
- 19:54Speaker 6: ball was in the strike zone, like it just you know,
- 19:58Speaker 6: gives like the circle the curf filled in for a
- 20:01Speaker 6: strike circle, you know, an open circle.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Ball Like I love that.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Because we're talking about pitches that are fifty to fifty
- 20:09Speaker 6: the abs, you're just not going to Umpires are going
- 20:13Speaker 6: to get half them wrong. Players are going to get
- 20:14Speaker 6: half of them wrong. So those aren't going to change.
- 20:17Speaker 6: It's the egregious ones. That's the only reason we have this,
- 20:20Speaker 6: and that's why I love it.
- 20:23Speaker 3: One more layer Cratzy. We're a catcher for a long time.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Some pitchers have impeccable control. For some it's like a
- 20:32Speaker 3: video game.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yep.
- 20:33Speaker 2: They know the assignment.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Now, not for every pitch, because you can't challenge every
- 20:38Speaker 3: pitch but they know the assignment.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And if you're a pitcher, aren't you.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Looking at that picture that Jesse Rodgers posted where the
- 20:45Speaker 3: circle turns into a square and you know the spots,
- 20:48Speaker 3: You're like, Okay, I mean, of course it varies based
- 20:51Speaker 3: on which hitter you're facing, strengths, weaknesses, et cetera. But
- 20:55Speaker 3: you've got a little bit more of a game plan
- 20:58Speaker 3: target wise in your head where you're like, I know,
- 21:01Speaker 3: to a t where that zone should be right with
- 21:05Speaker 3: the square versus the circle, and a little bit more
- 21:09Speaker 3: variants with the gray area.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Of the zone.
- 21:11Speaker 3: What did we call it? What did we'd been calling
- 21:13Speaker 3: it the buffer zone? Right, we don't have that anymore so.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Trash top buffer zone. It's a striker. It's not a
- 21:19Speaker 1: strike like that buffer zone is trash. Here it is.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Here is the strategicy, the part that is it going
- 21:27Speaker 6: to change the game. No, dudes are still going to
- 21:30Speaker 6: get jobs because they throw ninety nine miles an hour.
- 21:33Speaker 6: But there is a value for the dudes who can
- 21:37Speaker 6: tickle the top and they can get the bottom corner
- 21:41Speaker 6: and the guy who can figure out, you know, my cutter,
- 21:45Speaker 6: I'm able to throw that up and in where it
- 21:48Speaker 6: does touch the top of the zone inside, but it's
- 21:52Speaker 6: got to end up a little more on the plate.
- 21:55Speaker 6: My cutter never is able to stay in the zone
- 21:58Speaker 6: long enough to be able touch upper upper quadrant or
- 22:02Speaker 6: the down and away quadrant. So there's going to be
- 22:05Speaker 6: strategy for a handful of guys. And those handful of
- 22:09Speaker 6: guys they might be able to find value in this.
- 22:11Speaker 6: They might be able to find you know who, who
- 22:14Speaker 6: is that guy? Is it a guy that used to
- 22:16Speaker 6: throw ninety eight? Now he's throwing more like ninety one
- 22:19Speaker 6: ninety three. But he's able to take He's able to
- 22:23Speaker 6: take some of the advantages of that zone and use
- 22:27Speaker 6: it for his advantage.
- 22:30Speaker 3: In conclusion, after what I thought was a very informative segment,
- 22:35Speaker 3: just now we finished with a tie. Each of you
- 22:38Speaker 3: used one fake word. For Crats the word was strategicy,
- 22:43Speaker 3: and for todd father the word was intricately. So you
- 22:46Speaker 3: guys tied. Good jobs doat one one one more introcral? Oh,
- 22:50Speaker 3: intricral still not a word, so integral strategical, I don't
- 22:57Speaker 3: think so. I have a lot of AI in my
- 22:59Speaker 3: world these days.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Definitely fine.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Spell it for me, Todd and I'll I t.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Integral o r T O I M T E D
- 23:14Speaker 4: G r A.
- 23:14Speaker 3: L oh integral. You said intrical integral, Yes, essentially, R
- 23:24Speaker 3: I C A l introcral. Yes, that's not a word integral. Yes,
- 23:30Speaker 3: but we just rolled back the tape and we heard intricole.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I had recently used the word intricate, so it could
- 23:37Speaker 3: just be a little bit of word.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Sometimes my t e rs go tru instead of ur.
- 23:44Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 23:44Speaker 5: That's the Jersey part of me. Okay, integral, I said
- 23:48Speaker 5: integral instead of integral.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Judges rule Olympic Judges.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Said that word again. He is about it.
- 24:06Speaker 5: We need somebody to use figure out the words we use,
- 24:10Speaker 5: like at the end of the show, what we got wrong.
- 24:13Speaker 2: You know, try to do more of it.
- 24:15Speaker 3: As you know, I've been working with you guys for
- 24:18Speaker 3: years and I just say whatever. So I'm just like,
- 24:20Speaker 3: I'm going to chime in as stat boy nerd boy.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I like I like the word monolithic.
- 24:26Speaker 6: I've always liked the word monolithic, and I try to
- 24:29Speaker 6: use it in as many sentences as possible.
- 24:32Speaker 1: What does it mean monolithic?
- 24:35Speaker 6: Yeah, one singular, like one singular object, like a like
- 24:42Speaker 6: a large rock.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Monolithic.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Wow, that was actually beautifully when when I put it
- 24:47Speaker 3: in my eye, the first thing that popped up was
- 24:49Speaker 3: a single solid piece of stone.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Beautiful. Yeah, I swear A plus A plus. All right,
- 24:59Speaker 2: you are now for prepared for your SATs. Let's move
- 25:02Speaker 2: on to a trade. Aja.

- 26:02Speaker 3: one zero FM. I think the Astros are the movers
- 26:15Speaker 3: and shakers of spring training because they still have more
- 26:18Speaker 3: moves up their sleeves. They have this surplus with their infield.
- 26:22Speaker 3: They also are still trying to clear some money, perhaps
- 26:24Speaker 3: to make some more moves.
- 26:27Speaker 2: They bring back.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Joey Lo Pervido Low Perfido from the Blue Jays. Remember
- 26:32Speaker 3: he was involved in the USA Kukuchi deal a couple
- 26:35Speaker 3: of years back. Jesus Sanchez going to Toronto Chandler Rome
- 26:40Speaker 3: of the Athletic and crush Shitty Territory telling us that
- 26:43Speaker 3: it's a money saving move. Sanchez is owed six point
- 26:46Speaker 3: eight million dollars. Joey Lo Pervito is making less than
- 26:50Speaker 3: one million dollars. She's making the league minimum, which is
- 26:52Speaker 3: seven hundred something thousand dollars. Low Perveto's pumped because he's
- 26:56Speaker 3: already in that organization. It's like you got to go
- 27:00Speaker 3: for the ride with the Blue Jays into experiencing a World.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Series in Canada.
- 27:04Speaker 3: But now he goes back to Houston, where I think
- 27:06Speaker 3: he might get himself more playing time.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Sanchez definitely a platoon guy.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Also helps Phil avoid maybe left by Santander out there
- 27:15Speaker 3: and the Blue Jays can mix and match a little bit,
- 27:16Speaker 3: and they can certainly afford the contract, not that the
- 27:19Speaker 3: Astros can't. Kratz on the other side. Here, you have
- 27:23Speaker 3: a surplus for the Astros, so you still wonder if
- 27:26Speaker 3: something's cooking. We're getting a lot of rumblings. I think
- 27:28Speaker 3: Chandler puts something out there along the lines of expect more.
- 27:32Speaker 5: So.
- 27:32Speaker 3: They are very active right now, and you keep thinking
- 27:35Speaker 3: that it involves the sock paratus because of the infield surplus.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Even Carlos Correa was asked about the situation, he said,
- 27:42Speaker 3: we have a lot of people that could potentially be
- 27:43Speaker 3: used in trades later on. I'm not a GM, but
- 27:45Speaker 3: I know that only four infielders can play at a time.
- 27:47Speaker 3: You have to make some move put some people in
- 27:49Speaker 3: the outfield have depth. So Cray had said, with the
- 27:53Speaker 3: owner that we have, we're not going to make our
- 27:55Speaker 3: team worse. Everybody knows that when the Astros make a move,
- 27:57Speaker 3: it's to make players better and make the hem better
- 28:01Speaker 3: and that might be the case. I will say, I'm
- 28:03Speaker 3: trying to get all this stuff on the fly. Jesus Sanchez,
- 28:06Speaker 3: when he joined the Astros, they were pumped to get
- 28:08Speaker 3: him for the misbalance that they had left you righty
- 28:12Speaker 3: in their lineup.
- 28:12Speaker 2: That was a big story over the years. But he
- 28:15Speaker 2: did not perform well with Houston.
- 28:18Speaker 3: So if your owner, Jim Crane, Kratz, and you're a
- 28:20Speaker 3: baseball super fan and you invested in Sanchez last year
- 28:23Speaker 3: and didn't work out.
- 28:23Speaker 6: Or like bait it, I like, I'm just gonna go
- 28:28Speaker 6: by what Carlos Correa said. Carlos Correa was one hundred
- 28:32Speaker 6: percent brought back here now that Dana Brown didn't like him.
- 28:36Speaker 6: Jim Crane loves him. I have heard Jim Crane say
- 28:39Speaker 6: it when he and I were talking back and forth
- 28:43Speaker 6: years ago, and how much he loves Carlos Correa and
- 28:47Speaker 6: everything that he embodies and how he you know, just
- 28:50Speaker 6: how he handles himself. So yes, Carlos Correa said, I'm
- 28:53Speaker 6: not a GM. Carlos Correy is talking to the guy
- 28:58Speaker 6: who ultimately makes the choice of how much money is spent.
- 29:03Speaker 6: And this is a money move, and this is also
- 29:06Speaker 6: a move that it was one of those things where
- 29:08Speaker 6: Low Perfido when they traded him. I remember reading an
- 29:12Speaker 6: article from the Astros and I wish I'd kept better
- 29:15Speaker 6: notes like Scott does. They really didn't want to get
- 29:18Speaker 6: rid of them. It was more of the like, okay,
- 29:22Speaker 6: like it's fine, like we're adding, we're adding what we
- 29:25Speaker 6: wanted in Kokuchi, but we really like Low Perfido and
- 29:29Speaker 6: you don't usually hear that from organizations. So for him
- 29:31Speaker 6: to go back, I've heard he is just one of
- 29:34Speaker 6: the nicest dudes. He's gonna get more playing time than
- 29:37Speaker 6: he did with the J's and he had a great
- 29:39Speaker 6: year with the Jays. So the J's were like, hey,
- 29:41Speaker 6: I know, we didn't use him a lot and we
- 29:43Speaker 6: have a surplus, so I guess, I guess we'll get
- 29:47Speaker 6: rid of them. But it's also a case where hey,
- 29:49Speaker 6: sus Sanchez just didn't He wasn't drinking the secret sauce
- 29:54Speaker 6: in Houston. It just didn't work out.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Some trades.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Some guys go places and the isn't always there, and
- 30:01Speaker 6: that's okay, so good for them moving on. But I
- 30:04Speaker 6: think there's another move. What if they went and got
- 30:07Speaker 6: Gallon too, What if the parades thing I don't know.
- 30:10Speaker 6: I just I feel like there's something more than just ah,
- 30:13Speaker 6: we gotta get rid of Paradis and you know, continue
- 30:16Speaker 6: to add to our to our outfield, you know, mix
- 30:21Speaker 6: what if they do something out of the ordinary. I
- 30:24Speaker 6: know they don't like the whole qualifying offer connected to him.
- 30:27Speaker 6: It just feels like Houston's lingering for something.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I have one other idea before Todd jumps in.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Everyone can add to their bullpen Josh Hater dealing with
- 30:37Speaker 3: the bicep thing, just keeping an eye on it. I
- 30:40Speaker 3: think Michael Kopeks still out there, and there are a
- 30:42Speaker 3: few other names too. Did they add a reliever?
- 30:45Speaker 1: No, yeah, they could.
- 30:46Speaker 6: They could, but that's not like they're not making moves
- 30:49Speaker 6: to add Michael Kopeck. They could add Michael Kopak yesterday.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Why you think he's gonna demand at this point?
- 30:56Speaker 2: You think? I don't know it?
- 30:57Speaker 1: And a large amount.
- 30:59Speaker 2: What's large?
- 30:59Speaker 3: I mean is he going to command one year seven
- 31:02Speaker 3: million bucks, which is around what Jyzus Sanchez was making.
- 31:06Speaker 3: So this is my one thing that I do think
- 31:09Speaker 3: the Astros look at is the luxury tax number. They're
- 31:13Speaker 3: usually dancing right below or above it, and they like
- 31:15Speaker 3: to stay in that range. Jim Crane essentially treats it
- 31:18Speaker 3: like a salary cap, not a hard cap, but it
- 31:21Speaker 3: is a soft cap. They keep themselves around that range.
- 31:24Speaker 3: So I could see that happening.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Again.
- 31:26Speaker 3: This broke right before the show, so I haven't done
- 31:29Speaker 3: my nerdy homework, but just throwing that out there, you
- 31:32Speaker 3: could see an arm like that. Added, there's still guys
- 31:35Speaker 3: out there that are going to command multimillion dollar contracts.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and I just to jump in, Like when someone
- 31:42Speaker 5: says they're not done yet, maybe it has something brewing.
- 31:46Speaker 5: There's talks going on where it could lead to something.
- 31:48Speaker 5: I mean usually when somebody says they're not done yet,
- 31:51Speaker 5: there's something in the background going on. But there's plenty
- 31:55Speaker 5: of guys out there that are itching to get a job.
- 31:57Speaker 4: So this is the time as.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Presidents, as gms that go out there and bey, hey,
- 32:02Speaker 5: take it or leave it. This is what we're gonna
- 32:04Speaker 5: give your guy if he wants a place. IF's not
- 32:06Speaker 5: you know, I hate to say bargains, but people need
- 32:10Speaker 5: to People have livelihoods and they got it. They want
- 32:12Speaker 5: to play, so got to feed the family. So these
- 32:16Speaker 5: could be some shorter not as much money for some guys,
- 32:19Speaker 5: not as many years for a couple of guys and
- 32:22Speaker 5: spot fillers that they're gonna be like, you know, it's
- 32:24Speaker 5: a major league deal. I didn't want to I didn't
- 32:25Speaker 5: get the money I wanted. I've been a part of that,
- 32:27Speaker 5: and it's it stinks, but you got to find a job.
- 32:32Speaker 3: The one thing that just keeps bothering me is that
- 32:34Speaker 3: I feel as if the Ashlers are trying to get
- 32:36Speaker 3: Escoc Paratus in Houston for years and then he's the
- 32:39Speaker 3: name that's being floated around in trade rumors, and they
- 32:43Speaker 3: have some guys who are getting up there in years.
- 32:46Speaker 3: It just seems like such a classic case of I'll
- 32:49Speaker 3: just throw this out there. Let's say Krag gets hurt right,
- 32:51Speaker 3: and then you're like, oh man, this team is maybe
- 32:54Speaker 3: gonna make the playoffs by a game or two. They
- 32:56Speaker 3: really need something. Oh wait, they need Escoc Paradus that
- 33:01Speaker 3: can just pull dingers in that ballpark and beat up
- 33:05Speaker 3: the Crawford boxes. Still would love to see another full
- 33:08Speaker 3: season of him out there. I get the logjam, and
- 33:10Speaker 3: Krey is going to be the guy that's going to
- 33:11Speaker 3: play every day until something happens at third. Jeremy Payne
- 33:14Speaker 3: had short I'll two ve at second, I think some
- 33:18Speaker 3: Bryce Matthew's over there too.
- 33:19Speaker 2: And then first is for Christian Walker. It's tough. You
- 33:24Speaker 2: can't have Paradis on the bench.
- 33:26Speaker 1: You can't keep him. You can't.
- 33:28Speaker 6: Sorry, it's not that's not how that's not how it works.
- 33:32Speaker 6: Maybe you can have seven or eight really good starters,
- 33:36Speaker 6: you know, starting pitchers, but when you have a guy
- 33:40Speaker 6: who should play every day, there's other ramifications to it.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Do you know do you know Correy is not going
- 33:47Speaker 1: to play every day? Do you know he's gonna get hurt? No,
- 33:49Speaker 1: you don't know that. Do you know that Christian Walker
- 33:52Speaker 1: is not going to get hurt? No, you don't know that.
- 33:54Speaker 6: But you can't have your organization. Can't one pay a
- 33:59Speaker 6: guy that much to see on the bench who is
- 34:02Speaker 6: an All Star last year? And two what does that
- 34:05Speaker 6: look like for other guys who go and sign places?
- 34:09Speaker 6: Oh what's gonna happen to me? If I sign here
- 34:12Speaker 6: and I had a good year and they're not willing
- 34:15Speaker 6: to get rid of me? Like there's there's a little
- 34:16Speaker 6: bit of a not saving face, but a you know
- 34:21Speaker 6: the look, what does it look like to the rest
- 34:22Speaker 6: of the league If they keep a guy like Parades
- 34:25Speaker 6: on the bench.
- 34:28Speaker 2: It looks like you have an embarrassment of briches.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I know, I know.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It just sucks.
- 34:34Speaker 3: I wish that they that this team didn't have a
- 34:36Speaker 3: logjam just because one of the most extreme pool hitters
- 34:40Speaker 3: in baseball with the Crawford boxes is.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Just fun, easy math to root for when you're a fan.
- 34:44Speaker 4: Of where Bill, when we need them?
- 34:49Speaker 3: What come on, man, why you gotta do that? We're
- 34:53Speaker 3: gonna have this clip later.
- 34:55Speaker 2: But yes to Boston.
- 34:59Speaker 3: I don't think it's gonna happ and now because I
- 35:00Speaker 3: guess they consider durban and everyday guy.
- 35:02Speaker 2: But I think that will walk through nice. Oh gosh,
- 35:06Speaker 2: I agree. I agree.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Okay, here's another guy who's up for grabs, Nick Castianos.
- 35:12Speaker 3: So we talked about him on yesterday's show, and then
- 35:14Speaker 3: by the end of yesterday's show he had been released.
- 35:16Speaker 3: We learned about the beer incident. Some fans went after
- 35:19Speaker 3: us on social media. I'm sorry, I'm going to stand
- 35:22Speaker 3: by this one. I know that some teammates were pissed.
- 35:24Speaker 3: I still don't think it's that big of a deal.
- 35:28Speaker 3: So John Hayman said, there's a lot of interest in
- 35:30Speaker 3: Castianos now that he's about to be free teams apparently
- 35:32Speaker 3: we're waiting for the expected release, and Isaacazout from fish
- 35:39Speaker 3: On First said, the Marlins do not have interest in
- 35:42Speaker 3: Nick Castianos, per sources, Well, there are many other teams
- 35:45Speaker 3: good good thing. Just want to make sure that Marlins
- 35:48Speaker 3: fans are Awarecrats that your team is again not going
- 35:52Speaker 3: after a player.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Don't worry. They don't like free agency. That still remains
- 35:56Speaker 2: the same.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It's not a free agent. It's not a free agent.
- 35:59Speaker 1: What can can we put that tweetback up? Can we
- 36:02Speaker 1: put that tweetback up?
- 36:03Speaker 6: Because if I had like a good like a the
- 36:05Speaker 6: Marlins do not have interest in winning, per sources, is
- 36:09Speaker 6: what they meant, not Nick costs.
- 36:11Speaker 3: No, they just don't believe. You don't need, you don't
- 36:13Speaker 3: need free agents to win, Cracks. You can build everything homegrown.
- 36:18Speaker 1: You don't.
- 36:18Speaker 6: You don't need they have good players, like everyone's gonna
- 36:21Speaker 6: get after us because oh they got so much pitching,
- 36:24Speaker 6: death and depth and they have so much to offer, Like, okay,
- 36:28Speaker 6: then build around it. If you have this incredible build up,
- 36:31Speaker 6: not even build around it. Build something something I think
- 36:35Speaker 6: I read this morning seventy eight million dollars is their
- 36:38Speaker 6: current payroll what it would be opening day if nothing changes,
- 36:42Speaker 6: and Nick Costianus would be seven hundred and eighty thousand.
- 36:45Speaker 6: I think the minimum is seven eighty or maybe seven
- 36:48Speaker 6: to twenty. I'm not one hundred percent sure. So the
- 36:49Speaker 6: Phillies are on the hook. And I said it before,
- 36:52Speaker 6: I'll say it again in Philly everybody in Philly. I
- 36:55Speaker 6: even got put on a radio My clip from our
- 36:58Speaker 6: show here got put on one of the local radio
- 37:00Speaker 6: stations and they spent a whole segment about it about
- 37:05Speaker 6: how wow, how could he say something like that? How
- 37:07Speaker 6: could he say Nick Costianos is a valuable piece. We
- 37:11Speaker 6: don't know exactly what went on, the whole beer and
- 37:13Speaker 6: the dugout thing, and then somebody saying what he did
- 37:17Speaker 6: was disgusting, like all the things that are are being
- 37:22Speaker 6: bantered around right now, like just pump the brakes. Wait
- 37:27Speaker 6: to ask somebody who was actually there, like Nick Costianos
- 37:30Speaker 6: and not just like some of the rumor stuff. But
- 37:34Speaker 6: he can be a valuable piece to a team. Is
- 37:37Speaker 6: he going to be a superstar?
- 37:39Speaker 2: No.
- 37:40Speaker 6: Twenty twenty three was the last time he got MVP votes,
- 37:44Speaker 6: but that was as a Philly His tenure in Philly
- 37:47Speaker 6: probably isn't as bad as the way it ended up
- 37:50Speaker 6: here is his defense declined? Yes, but can he help
- 37:55Speaker 6: a team one hundred percent?
- 38:03Speaker 5: Like, I'm just confused because I really I love the guy.
- 38:06Speaker 5: I think he's a great dude, but he's he's also
- 38:09Speaker 5: a really good player. He's I feel like he's getting
- 38:11Speaker 5: the bed end of the stick over here in Philly,
- 38:13Speaker 5: and I think a change of scenery might kickstart him
- 38:16Speaker 5: back to being the player that he is. Man, Listen,
- 38:20Speaker 5: everybody's strong minded. The strongest people in the word have
- 38:22Speaker 5: the world are the best minds. They can trick their
- 38:25Speaker 5: mind of being comfortable with being excited, being positive. But
- 38:29Speaker 5: if more stuff goes, it builds once you get home
- 38:31Speaker 5: you think about it. Everybody's human, So I think the
- 38:34Speaker 5: human side of him he needed to go just to
- 38:38Speaker 5: get away from all the craziness going on and all
- 38:42Speaker 5: that stuff. But I feel like he would help any
- 38:45Speaker 5: ball club he would get on the right path, and
- 38:47Speaker 5: I think people would love him because you know, I've
- 38:49Speaker 5: heard nothing but really good things about him and the
- 38:52Speaker 5: way he plays the game. I love his attitude, I
- 38:54Speaker 5: love his energy, a spark and that little arrogance in
- 38:58Speaker 5: the best way possible.
- 38:59Speaker 4: I love that too.
- 39:01Speaker 6: I Mean there's also articles out about Otto Kemp when
- 39:04Speaker 6: he got called up, how much he helped him, Like
- 39:08Speaker 6: if a player makes more of a positive impact on
- 39:11Speaker 6: your team than a negative impact. I think at the
- 39:15Speaker 6: league minimum, I think there's a lot of value to
- 39:20Speaker 6: a lot of different teams. It'd be very interesting to
- 39:22Speaker 6: see not only who picks him up, but the fact
- 39:25Speaker 6: that he gets to choose. Now, who picks him up,
- 39:28Speaker 6: he gets to choose because it's just a matter of hey,
- 39:30Speaker 6: what team, So, yes, is his most value as a
- 39:34Speaker 6: DH for some team? Probably does he still feel like
- 39:38Speaker 6: he can play right field? So maybe a team that
- 39:41Speaker 6: says we'll let you play eighty games in right field,
- 39:45Speaker 6: We'll let you play one hundred games in the outfield,
- 39:49Speaker 6: you're not just gonna DH. Maybe that's where he goes
- 39:52Speaker 6: and it might not be the place that everybody thinks.
- 39:56Speaker 5: Yeah, and last thing, like you think of I Henningo
- 39:59Speaker 5: Suarez talked about him, and remember when we had forget
- 40:04Speaker 5: voting on I said, hey, the Reds would love to
- 40:07Speaker 5: have him a good pick up. He kind of, like,
- 40:09Speaker 5: you know, shushed it off a little bit, not being
- 40:11Speaker 5: rude about it, but reds end up picking him up.
- 40:14Speaker 5: Nobody really saw that coming. So like, there might be
- 40:16Speaker 5: a team out there, like, dude, this guy can have
- 40:18Speaker 5: a resurgence and all of a sudden we give him,
- 40:21Speaker 5: you know, a little bit of money and next thing,
- 40:23Speaker 5: you know, kick start back his career.
- 40:27Speaker 4: I agree totally.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Well, the league looks at players mostly the same way,
- 40:36Speaker 3: and his defensive metrics are not good. You can argue
- 40:39Speaker 3: it however you want, they're not good. Most of the
- 40:41Speaker 3: league is going to want him to primarily be a DH.
- 40:44Speaker 3: He actually said earlier this offseason he would explore first base.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Maybe that's a spot that he starts messing around with
- 40:50Speaker 3: in spring training. I think he's at a prove it
- 40:52Speaker 3: point where a team's gonna say, I don't know, you
- 40:58Speaker 3: probably are going to DH. We can mess around with
- 41:00Speaker 3: first You might not play a lick of outfield, or
- 41:04Speaker 3: if there's injuries, you might play a little bit of outfield.
- 41:07Speaker 2: But I know you have a chip on your shoulder.
- 41:09Speaker 3: You've provided mostly above average offense over the last five years.
- 41:13Speaker 2: You are a timely hitter. If you watch him on
- 41:14Speaker 2: an everyday basis.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Nobody's saying this is a superstar, but this is a
- 41:17Speaker 3: guy like these guys are saying that he can contribute
- 41:21Speaker 3: to a team that needs some more offense.
- 41:23Speaker 2: So krats for me.
- 41:26Speaker 3: I think if I'm Nick, I'm like, dude, I don't
- 41:27Speaker 3: care what you do with me. I just want to
- 41:30Speaker 3: go Rake and playing the All Star Game in Philly
- 41:34Speaker 3: this year?
- 41:38Speaker 1: Such a your side? What is that called?
- 41:40Speaker 6: It's not trolling, but you're trolling. You're you're you're living
- 41:44Speaker 6: for that moment. You want to see every every two
- 41:48Speaker 6: for three game that Nick has this year. Scott's going
- 41:51Speaker 6: to be like, let's get.
- 41:52Speaker 1: The voting going, Let's get the voting going.
- 41:55Speaker 6: No, I yeah, that would be that would be nice,
- 41:59Speaker 6: That'll be would be sweet revenge, I guess you would say.
- 42:02Speaker 6: But I think he's got a lot. I think he's
- 42:05Speaker 6: got a lot to prove, and I think some of
- 42:07Speaker 6: the things that just have circled out there. How many
- 42:11Speaker 6: times has Nick really gone through struggles? How many times
- 42:15Speaker 6: in his career as a baseball player, not his life
- 42:18Speaker 6: his career as a baseball player. He was a massively
- 42:22Speaker 6: hot super prospect coming out of high school, made it
- 42:26Speaker 6: to the big league super early, and has had success
- 42:30Speaker 6: a lot along the way how to kind of re
- 42:33Speaker 6: re up his value part way through like rate at
- 42:36Speaker 6: free agency, and then he cashed in. So it's like,
- 42:39Speaker 6: you know, how do you handle those how do you
- 42:42Speaker 6: handle those setbacks? Is it time for a comeback? We'll
- 42:46Speaker 6: see in twenty twenty six.
- 42:49Speaker 3: I'm going to read an excerpt from an article that
- 42:52Speaker 3: mac elb from The Athletic wrote. This was the article
- 42:55Speaker 3: that drove I think Castiano's writing about the beer into in.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Miami last year.
- 43:01Speaker 3: The article, by the way, if you want to check
- 43:03Speaker 3: it out, how the Phillies one hundred million dollar marriage
- 43:05Speaker 3: with Nick Castianos ended in divorce. I want to get
- 43:08Speaker 3: player perspective here because I'm getting a little bit of
- 43:10Speaker 3: shades of Adam Laroche. Young fans, you can look up
- 43:14Speaker 3: that story, google him. Here's from the article about four
- 43:18Speaker 3: hours right, So Todd, you got your first up here.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Let me cue you. Ready.
- 43:23Speaker 3: About four hours before game two of last year's NLDS
- 43:27Speaker 3: Castianos's final home game, a Phillies coach through batting practice
- 43:30Speaker 3: to Nick son Liam while some Dodgers players were on
- 43:34Speaker 3: the field doing pregame preparations. Real Muto waited to take
- 43:38Speaker 3: early batting practice. The same pregame hitting sessions carried over
- 43:42Speaker 3: to Dodger Stadium, where Liam joined his father on the
- 43:45Speaker 3: field before more playoff games. The Phillies had entered the
- 43:48Speaker 3: series not expecting Castianos to be a factor, and injury
- 43:50Speaker 3: to Harrison Vader forced him into action. Castianos had two
- 43:53Speaker 3: hits and fifteen avs. He drove in the team's lone
- 43:55Speaker 3: run in that heartbreaking eleven inning defeat in Game four
- 43:59Speaker 3: that sent the Phillies home. Afterward, he sipped on a
- 44:01Speaker 3: beer inside the losing clubhouses. Everyone reflected on what was
- 44:04Speaker 3: and what was not. By then, there was no love lost.
- 44:07Speaker 3: The Phillies knew their marriage with Castianus was ending playoffs.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Kid on the field, BP, is that okay?
- 44:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it's fine?
- 44:17Speaker 2: I do.
- 44:17Speaker 4: I think it's fine. Maybe he could have picked a
- 44:19Speaker 4: different time to go. Maybe that.
- 44:22Speaker 5: That's the only problem I have with that. Make sure
- 44:25Speaker 5: you know when you're on there, nobody else is supposed
- 44:27Speaker 5: to hit. If a guy is supposed to come in,
- 44:28Speaker 5: Hey guy, Hey Liam, we got to get off the field.
- 44:31Speaker 5: That kind of deal I will never not side with
- 44:35Speaker 5: with a family member trying to have his boy on
- 44:37Speaker 5: a field in a major league field working out having
- 44:40Speaker 5: a good time. But also I will always side with
- 44:43Speaker 5: the professional that needs to get his work done as well.
- 44:46Speaker 3: But but they said real Muto was waiting to take
- 44:50Speaker 3: early VP. Again, like this is you know a ton point.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Nick will come on the show. We can talk to
- 44:55Speaker 3: him about this, because this could be like one disgruntled
- 44:57Speaker 3: person or person in the organization. That's probably where Krats
- 45:00Speaker 3: is going to come in being like, oh, let me
- 45:02Speaker 3: get him, let me go after him.
- 45:04Speaker 2: So I'm just presenting what is out here right now.
- 45:07Speaker 2: He's gonna talk. I'm sure he'll come on here and talk.
- 45:09Speaker 5: If this was the true story and how everything unfolded. Hopefully,
- 45:14Speaker 5: while I talk, I sound like I understand. M two
- 45:18Speaker 5: comes up, Hey, big guy, we got to get off.
- 45:21Speaker 5: He's taken early BP. Let's go to the cage like
- 45:23Speaker 5: something like that probably should have happened. Yes, of course
- 45:27Speaker 5: the baseball player should get precedents of that. He's trying
- 45:30Speaker 5: to win as the playoffs. The beer thing, when you lose,
- 45:34Speaker 5: grab a beer, talk to the boys. What the hell
- 45:36Speaker 5: is that crap about? I mean, come on, man, like
- 45:39Speaker 5: that right there, putting in a beer after you lost, Well,
- 45:42Speaker 5: that's what. That's what guys do who like to drink
- 45:45Speaker 5: beer after a game, poor themselves. Whatever they're drinking, sip
- 45:50Speaker 5: on it and talk about what.
- 45:51Speaker 4: Could have been. There could have been, so should have
- 45:54Speaker 4: that part. That's bogus.
- 45:56Speaker 5: They shouldn't have put they put that in there for
- 45:58Speaker 5: people just be like, oh, and did you hear about
- 46:00Speaker 5: him drinking a beer too?
- 46:02Speaker 2: That's well, I will say this pot let me.
- 46:04Speaker 4: I don't agree with that one at all.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I agree we're on the same page with that beer
- 46:08Speaker 3: in the clubhouse. That was kind of relating to the
- 46:11Speaker 3: beer in the dugout incident.
- 46:13Speaker 2: So just to I heard that, we're taking it. Yeah,
- 46:15Speaker 2: you saw that he.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Brought not the only one, not the only one to
- 46:18Speaker 4: ever do that. That's just what he got picked up
- 46:20Speaker 4: because it's it's here.
- 46:22Speaker 5: People are trying to find more crap and make it
- 46:25Speaker 5: seem like he's worse of a person for doing that.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Okay, every Joe Schmoe fan is acting like, you know,
- 46:32Speaker 3: he broke the holy rule of bringing.
- 46:34Speaker 2: A beer into that's where That's where I goug out when.
- 46:37Speaker 3: He was taken out of a game and we talked
- 46:38Speaker 3: about it live reacting to it yesterday and and I
- 46:41Speaker 3: got the uh the Straight Edge Brigade online being like,
- 46:44Speaker 3: how dare he? You guys are defending him because he's
- 46:46Speaker 3: come on the show before. I was like, I don't
- 46:48Speaker 3: give a shit. It has nothing to do with that.
- 46:50Speaker 3: I just know that there's probably hundreds of players who
- 46:53Speaker 3: have brought a little sip of alcohol into the dugout
- 46:56Speaker 3: after they're not in the game, or even some pictures
- 46:58Speaker 3: when they're not pitching in that game, like a starter.
- 47:01Speaker 2: So I know enough.
- 47:03Speaker 3: You guys know enough, right, But Krats the floor is yours.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Hey.
- 47:09Speaker 6: I won't comment more on the we hit the beer
- 47:11Speaker 6: thing plenty yesterday. I love the fact it was a
- 47:14Speaker 6: presidente and if you get an actual presidente from the
- 47:17Speaker 6: Dominican oh, I mean, it's almost like yeah anyway. But
- 47:23Speaker 6: the whole hitting on the field thing, I'm in agreeance
- 47:27Speaker 6: with Todd that, yes, families should be able to do
- 47:30Speaker 6: things you should be able to But there is zero
- 47:34Speaker 6: chance that JT.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Real Muto was standing there like how Matt painted it
- 47:39Speaker 1: in that in that article.
- 47:40Speaker 4: J T.
- 47:41Speaker 6: Romutto wasn't standing there like, Oh, I guess, I guess
- 47:44Speaker 6: I'm not going to go watching these guys interact, watching
- 47:47Speaker 6: how different guys interact with the with each other on
- 47:51Speaker 6: the Phillies team. It really is like a family and
- 47:54Speaker 6: they've been there together. Was Nick taking you know? Was
- 47:58Speaker 6: he saying, hey, you know what, this might be my
- 48:01Speaker 6: last time that he gets to hit with me on
- 48:05Speaker 6: the field as a Philly. Maybe maybe he knew, you know,
- 48:08Speaker 6: his time was coming to an end. But I need
- 48:12Speaker 6: to see the fact that JT real Muto was being
- 48:16Speaker 6: put out because because of Liam hitting, like Liam hitting
- 48:22Speaker 6: before early work, like early work is happening, like when
- 48:26Speaker 6: pictures and catchers are out there stretching, when pictures are
- 48:29Speaker 6: getting their long toss in before before visiting, before home
- 48:34Speaker 6: team batting practice. So I don't think this was as
- 48:39Speaker 6: big of a deal. It was just more of a
- 48:41Speaker 6: It was another story that until JT comes on and says, dude,
- 48:45Speaker 6: I was I was put out because of that. That
- 48:48Speaker 6: banged up my entire rest of my routine, or Nick
- 48:52Speaker 6: comes on and goes like, yeah, Liam was hitting, like
- 48:56Speaker 6: it was totally finn Like I wasn't taking up any time.
- 48:59Speaker 6: Like that happens a lot, and I think that should
- 49:01Speaker 6: always happen.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Agreed, and to button it up. If JT was really waiting.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Even if JT and Nick had a problem with each other,
- 49:14Speaker 5: you have to let the guy go with it like
- 49:16Speaker 5: that's I just can't see that happen in that way.
- 49:19Speaker 5: And if it did, then that's news to me and
- 49:21Speaker 5: everybody in the baseball world that that happened.
- 49:25Speaker 3: We're gonna hear more about this. At some point, Dave
- 49:27Speaker 3: Dombraski was asked about this. I watched the back and
- 49:30Speaker 3: forth with media because Philly media was doing a really
- 49:32Speaker 3: nice job trying to get answers, and Dave was just
- 49:35Speaker 3: basically saying, listen, it was seven months ago, and I'm
- 49:38Speaker 3: gonna let Nick handle the rest. So I'm like, okay,
- 49:42Speaker 3: I hope Nick comes out and talks about it at
- 49:44Speaker 3: some point, you know, when he's comfortable to go over it,
- 49:47Speaker 3: he'll sign and then we'll figure it out.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Sorry, one last thing, I got a call after I
- 49:52Speaker 6: talked about the whole Knick situation from somebody with the Phillies,
- 49:57Speaker 6: And yes, the situation what I had said was a
- 49:59Speaker 6: dress to me, but it was also then added on
- 50:03Speaker 6: to that the fact that you know, there's certain things
- 50:07Speaker 6: that certain guys handle in certain ways, and it was like, okay,
- 50:11Speaker 6: was it just the beer in the dugout situation. No,
- 50:16Speaker 6: was it just the Liam hitting and j t Romuto
- 50:20Speaker 6: standing there. No, this was something that was brewing. And
- 50:25Speaker 6: like I think, whoever talked to Matt Gelb, or maybe
- 50:29Speaker 6: Matt Gelb saw it and saw it a certain way
- 50:31Speaker 6: because things have been brewing.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Things have been brewing.
- 50:34Speaker 6: And to me go back and look at what he
- 50:36Speaker 6: did throughout his four years, his three years of his contract,
- 50:40Speaker 6: three of the four years, I don't think it was
- 50:44Speaker 6: an awful contract. There's much worse contracts out there. Right now,
- 50:48Speaker 6: let's put it that way.
- 50:49Speaker 2: It was four years because it was a five to
- 50:51Speaker 2: one hundred, right.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Years, Okay. I thought it was four years.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Last year because he had one year left.
- 50:58Speaker 1: I think offensive. Look what he did, m h.
- 51:02Speaker 3: He did some things, okay, And I think the league
- 51:05Speaker 3: evaluates a player like him differently.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Now is that right or wrong? I don't know, but
- 51:10Speaker 2: totally right.
- 51:11Speaker 3: You get you get destroyed on a war number for
- 51:15Speaker 3: defense these days, and if you're out.
- 51:16Speaker 1: There, he doesn't.
- 51:18Speaker 6: He doesn't control his zone very well. He doesn't control
- 51:20Speaker 6: his zone very well. He strikes out like nobody's denying
- 51:24Speaker 6: his deficiencies. The reason they came up with the acronym
- 51:28Speaker 6: war wins above replacement. The replacement player is the guy
- 51:32Speaker 6: coming up from Triple A. Literally my career, I am
- 51:36Speaker 6: the replacement player. My career numbers are rate at zero.
- 51:40Speaker 6: It's negative point one is my replacement number. So I
- 51:45Speaker 6: am the replacement. Is Nick Costianos on every day of
- 51:49Speaker 6: the week and twice on Sundays better than me. Yes,
- 51:53Speaker 6: So that's why, in my opinion, he should be on
- 51:56Speaker 6: a big league team giving you one hundred and sixty
- 51:59Speaker 6: two games.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Not a replacement in our heart.
- 52:04Speaker 3: Okay, next up, I mean that was great. I really
- 52:08Speaker 3: enjoyed that segment and hope everyone else did. To let
- 52:10Speaker 3: us know, if you're watching this afterward, drop a comment,
- 52:13Speaker 3: yell at us, do whatever you want. That calendar is
- 52:22Speaker 3: sizzling bout Territory Spring Training Tour.
- 52:25Speaker 2: We have one more show.
- 52:25Speaker 3: We do have a show on Monday, okay, and then
- 52:30Speaker 3: the spring training tour begins. AJ will be here doing
- 52:33Speaker 3: Monday show. I actually don't think I'll be on Monday show,
- 52:35Speaker 3: but AJ will be there. Krats will be there. Oh
- 52:38Speaker 3: I'm sorry that I take ten days off the show
- 52:41Speaker 3: the whole year. So Royals camp on Tuesday Royals camp
- 52:45Speaker 3: on Tuesday, Guardians Wednesday, A's Thursday, Dodgers Friday, Mariners Saturday, Sunday,
- 52:51Speaker 3: Rangers camp and then there are a ton of other
- 52:53Speaker 3: teams were hitting. I think about twenty five teams on
- 52:56Speaker 3: a five week tour. So if you want to see
- 52:57Speaker 3: the rest, then have fun.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Tricia Whittaker hosting on Monday, and I heard it could
- 53:02Speaker 3: be a very special episode Buck Show, Walter joining and
- 53:05Speaker 3: we might have like a semi live audience. No promises,
- 53:08Speaker 3: but Tricia Whittaker hosting on Monday. I had one other thing. Oh,
- 53:16Speaker 3: Roman Anthony added to the WBC. He's going to play
- 53:20Speaker 3: for Team USA in place of Corbyn Carrol if he
- 53:24Speaker 3: passes the spring training physical.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Twenty pounds of muscle.
- 53:30Speaker 3: Twenty pounds of muscle twenty pounds. I'm not saying he
- 53:36Speaker 3: got heavy, but twenty pounds of pure muscle. Maybe that's
- 53:40Speaker 3: a technicality and I'm being a nerd about it. So
- 53:44Speaker 3: enjoy the weekend everyone, Todd Father's birthday weekend continues.
- 53:48Speaker 2: What other surprises will he have?
- 53:51Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I got a big dinner tomorrow. Valentine's dead Man,
- 53:54Speaker 5: my money, my buddy came through Mark, Thank you.
- 54:00Speaker 2: I love it. Crawts Hats on the way out.
- 54:07Speaker 1: No very Orange.
- 54:10Speaker 3: They got a shout out today for Miles Michaelis, who said,
- 54:12Speaker 3: if you back up enough as a bass.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Coach, you might as well. That was the line of
- 54:18Speaker 2: the show. Happy Friday people, Happy Monday.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Happy Birthday. Have a good day.
- 54:30Speaker 2: H
