- 0:29SPEAKER_00: From Green Bay, Wisconsin, I am live at Badger State Brewing on Tony Canadeo Run.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: It's great being back here in the state of Wisconsin, Bob,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: and figured,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: you know what,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: if we're going to hit record on an episode of the Ty and Bob Pod
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: with Bob McGinn back, baby, from vacation, got to find a brewery.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And this is a nice one.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: I tell you what, this wasn't around in our day.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Which is more than a decade ago.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Now that you think about it, it's crazy.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: It's been that long.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You drive around Green Bay and new restaurants, new bars, new breweries.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: They've got their own title town by the stadium.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And actually this brewery, it's a couple of Hail Mary tosses away from Lambeau Field.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So it's great.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I'm drinking.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Drinking an ice.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: IPA.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Let me give you the exact name of it here.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: It is a...
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Hang tight.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Grassy Place Hazy IPA.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: They've got a Grassy Place series of beers.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It is smooth.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It's not one of those IPAs that choke you out.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I like this.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Choke
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: you out.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: We'll sip on this through the pod.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: And I got my bad look coffee, okay?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: With a straw, I see.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Coffee with a straw.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Here's to you, Tyler.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I just wish you were out here with me, Bob.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: We could throw back some beers like old times.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe get Silverstein in the fold.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But hey,
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: the best way, look,
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: if we're going to do some feature stories on the Packers,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: be it profiles,
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: deep dives on the team,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: you got to be here talking to Several players,
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: coaches,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: as many people as we
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: possibly can to bring you guys as close as possible to
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: the real thing.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It's been a very successful trip.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: We'll leave it right there.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Be on the lookout for stories as they roll out in the coming weeks and months.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And the Green Bay Packers, man, got a little winning streak rolling here.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And it's a big one.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And Detroit, Michigan, this week against the Lions.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: We'll definitely touch on that.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Only two games to review, but I think the people want to know, Bob, how was your trip?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Going back to the roots.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: The trip was magnificent.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Let me get a little background.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: My dad, Tyler, Dennis McGinn, with one hand, Dennis, was born in 1902.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: So when I popped out, he was 50.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: My mom was 45.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: I'm glad to be here, Tyler, if you can understand that, right?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: That's spectacular.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: So he died when I was nine.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: So I don't, you know, his background, I don't know.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: So this trip with Pat, my wife, was to check his background out.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: College, two colleges, law school, one of them.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: And high school.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So the shirt I'm wearing.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: TRF Prowlers.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a saber-toothed tiger on your sweatshirt.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: For those listening, not viewing, that is a sweatshirt.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: It looks like a sweatshirt I would have got at
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: the Wisconsin Shopko Hall sweatsale back in the day.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: That is sharp.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Well, it's the first time it's been worn.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So the TRF.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Northwest corner of the state of Minnesota,
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: maybe 70 miles from the Canadian border and 50 miles from Grand Forks,
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: North Dakota, the Red River, which separates those two states.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: So we were in Thief River three days.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: He graduated, he was a prowler in 1920.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: He captained the football team in 1919 and the basketball team in 1920 that season.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Kayla, the principal of Thief River Falls and Reed,
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: the math teacher and historian par excellence.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Gosh, they let me sit there and look at all the yearbook,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: the Prowler yearbooks from 1916 to 1923.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: He had brothers and sisters.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So I've taken all these copious notes and taken some pictures.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And it was a great three days.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: It's Thief River Falls, home of Arctic Cat snowmobiles.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Whoa.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Get out of here.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Those are big in Western New York.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: You see those all over.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Arctic Cat.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: We stay in Quality Inn right near there.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: What else?
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: The hockey arena in town,
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: 3600 seat arena with this Engestad money that built the arena over University
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: of North Dakota which has 16,000 seats.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: It's like little Norway up in Thief River Falls.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: This is about populations 9,000 I'd say.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Settled by Norwegians.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Now, my dad's clan came from Ireland.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: So in one of the yearbooks, they were describing McGinn, Shamrock McGinn, they called him.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: So that was a great three days in Thief River Falls,
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: and I got the shirt, so we're ready to roll.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: The next two weeks, we'll mention the other two colleges he was at, okay?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: We'll hold that to you.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, that was only part of your trip.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I know that you were able to get together with one of our Go Long OG subscribers.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, hell, no, he goes way back.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: We've been talking to this individual for a very long time,
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: one of the absolute best people watching this pod.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I'll let you take it from there, Bob.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: He's a pillar, isn't he?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: He's a pillar, yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Dr. Jeff Mendeloff.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: M-E-N-D-E-L-O-F-F, vascular surgeon in Minneapolis.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Loves medicine, loves his job, and loves the Green Bay Packers, doesn't he?
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: He can talk at 24-7, can he, T?
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's the best.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I was talking to him just the other week from the Bills Press Box.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Dr. Jeff, can't thank you enough for all your...
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Loyal support.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, we've been talking to him back to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel days.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: We've been talking to a ton of people from those JS days, which is now 15 years ago.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So everybody out there listening,
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: watching, I mean,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: holy hell,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: we could not be more blessed,
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: more gracious that you have stuck with us through all of the years.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, when we started this podcast, podcasts were in their infancy.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: There were not many of them.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And You know,
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: we were hitting record from Bob's kitchen with this bulky equipment
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: that didn't even do anything.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I swear,
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I really don't think any of those knobs and dials did a damn thing,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: but look pretty in the kitchen.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: But I mean, people have stuck with us throughout the years and it's awesome.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: And Dr. Jeff is one of a kind,
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: incredibly intelligent when it comes to this team,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: like a lot of people here who subscribe.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I imagine it was a great dinner with him and his wife, you and Pat.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Probably a lot of good Packers talk.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe you got some good ideas.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe he got you thinking
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: on a few things, Bob.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Maybe a little too much Packer talk.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: I like to talk about his medicine, his career in medicine and all this kind of thing.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: But he goes, Bob, Bob, what about that linebacker, Franklin or something?
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Bob, Bob.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And he's literally saving lives.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Saving lives.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: He's a Milwaukee native,
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: and now he informs me he's going to the World Series this weekend in Milwaukee.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: See his brewers.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Successful trip then for you.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: It was great.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: In your stead,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: our old pal Spoon tapped in,
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: brought his intellect, insight, analysis, as only Spoon can.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So thanks for that, Tom.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Where shall we start?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm driving around town and listening to some local radio,
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: talking to the locals,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: and there is a buzz in the air,
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: an excitement out of – I mean, really – 31-7 over the Bears.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: 23-13 over Dallas.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And both of those scores could have been a hell of a lot worse.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: You think about all the missed kicks against the Bears.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Three drop touchdowns against Dallas.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: They started with a win over Tampa.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: This is three in a row.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: That was a little uglier.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: But they've turned it around.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: And this was a team in a pretty dark place.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, at Lambeau Field, we talked about it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: The fans were booing.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: The line looked...
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Decrepid answers seem non-existent.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: The 2026 season appeared fairly bleak for the Green Bay Packers.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: And I'll say this.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: And this is why I appreciate everybody who subscribes and reads and understands how
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: that two-part series on Matt LaFleur presented all sides.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: There is a lot of redeeming qualities to Matt LaFleur.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And you can look at his hard coaching through a lot of different lens.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It can be a good thing.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: It'd be a bad thing when it comes to how he works with his assistants.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: But I did talk to a coach fresh out of that Atlanta game
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: when times were looking pretty dark for the Green Bay Packers.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And this coach who,
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: pretty critical of his boss,
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: really credited Matt LaFleur for being calm in that moment.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, this was less than 24 hours after the loss,
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: and he just noted how calm Matt LaFleur was,
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: how he had an open forum,
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: was just really having great dialogue with his assistants and wasn't panicking,
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: right?
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: A hard-driving Shanahan tree coach.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Kind of stayed measured when he had to stay measured.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And it does seem like, you know, he wants a player-led locker room.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Brian Gutekinds did what he did, finding some more linemen.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: And then Travis Glover comes up and steadies things at right guard.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: They grit through an ugly win against Tampa.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: They blow out the Bears and Tyson Bajan.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: They blow out Dak Press.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, that really...
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: This was the defense's first real test there against the Cowboys,
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: and they looked really good against an explosive offense.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: You have to give it up to Matt LaFleur.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, he steadied this team through a rough early stretch.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Now they're really getting into the meat of their schedule when you look ahead.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Where do you see the Green Bay Packers right now, Bob?
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, you've been around forever, 1979.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: You've seen the ups and downs and, you know, and 18-week schedule, 17 games.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: All teams are going to do this,
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: up and down, and you've got to somehow just ride out those inevitable tidal waves.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe Green Bay had theirs early.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: It's a tough division, though, isn't it?
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, I wasn't that down on them when they were 1-2.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: However,
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: had Baker Mayfield played in that game,
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: They very likely would have been one and three, and then we would have been talking.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: But one and two,
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: they got good players all over the place on this lineup,
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: and the O-line was a total mess.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: They've done a good job,
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: good coaching, good player procurement, solidifying that for the time being.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at the defenses.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: They haven't seen great pass rush in these three teams, but yeah,
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: They're a contender.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: They were a contender starting out the year.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: They're a contender now.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: They're in a very difficult division.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: You know, right now the North, 16-6, Tyler.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: That's 7-27.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Second place is the AFC North, 15-8, 6-5-2.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's brutal.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Vikings 5-0, Green Bay 4-2, Bears 4-2, Lions 3-2.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And now we got the Lions and hosting Green Bay Sunday.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah,
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: I expect them to be what they've been for most of these last 30 years,
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: a contender with a shot to get to the Super Bowl.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And it's about time they get to one, really.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Definitely more than the number seven seed sneaking into the 44% club.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: There's a,
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: There's a fine line you've got to straddle if you're Matt LaFleur in
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: the Green Bay Packers where you want the urgency to be there.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: You feel the pressure,
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: whether you're using the words Super Bowl or not,
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: but you don't want that tightness to manifest to your players.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: That's where I think Jordan Love is just the perfect quarterback for this team.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was just grabbing lunch with a player inside of his huddle,
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: and this player really noted how It doesn't matter if you can't hear yourself think
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: at U.S. Bank Stadium, any of these road venues, placing could be going nuts.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: The defense could be blitzing the whole kitchen sink at you.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Jordan loves calm demeanor, just laser beam.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: It makes them calm, right?
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Shit's hitting the fan, and he is totally unaffected.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And that's his playing style.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, especially this year, he's been hanging in that pocket.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Stepping up into that pocket,
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: as Tom noted last week,
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: as well as he has throughout his entire career,
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: knowing damn well he's going to take a shot and just delivering dime after dime
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: after dime.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, some of the throws he was making against Dallas,
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: it's about as sharp as Jordan Love has looked his entire career.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't even care what his stats are.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: His completion percentage, I'm sure, isn't great.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: You watch these games, you watch his play.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: He's making throws very few quarterbacks in the league can make.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: You know, it's going to come down.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: We've seen this for a couple years with Jordan, you know.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't think he's playing any better now than he did.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: He stretches last year, stretches two years ago, stretches three years ago.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: He's just got to do it at the end, you know.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: He's at that point in his career now.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: He's really good all this regular season.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: It's just to get to the playoffs.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: And when they get there, they got to do it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: You know, the NFC is a mess.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: You got the Eagles now with no QB.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: We got L.A. losing Devontae Adams.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: They're sitting at two and four.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: So you got two huge contenders basically almost out of the picture in the NFC.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: So what do you got?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: You got the Niners at six and all.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: The Seahawks should be solid, three and three, and the three teams in the North.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, the NFC East is a wasteland.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: NFC South, Carolina should win that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I don't see them doing much in the postseason.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Maybe Atlanta, but
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: they got problems too.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: We're only six weeks into this
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: thing, and it's really crystallizing.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: The NFC's only got a few teams.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And Green Bay?
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: When they get Parsons back,
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: and if Parsons plays somewhat similar the way he was last year,
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: they got a real shot.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Josh Jacobs, too.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I forgot about him.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: You know, Kevin Zeitler hasn't been incorporated into the offense yet.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: When do you get him in there?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I'm sure we'll talk about the offensive line.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: But, yeah, I mean, every team has injuries.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Edric Cooper goes down with that Achilles.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: But, I don't know, Isaiah McDuffie's flying there.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: He was making plays, and he's got a ton of experience.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: You can talk yourself into all four of these NFC North teams.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Really.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, even Detroit, with as bad as they've been on defense, they can score with anybody.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: The Vikings' defense is elite, and now their offense is starting to wake up.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: And Chicago got Caleb Williams back.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: What was he, 30 of – 31 of 36?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: You didn't really know – I'm sorry?
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: He had three throwaways out of those six incompletes.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: I didn't think this division would be as good this year.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Boy, it might be.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, might be.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: All right, well, let's get into the games like we always do here on the NFC North pod.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Shall we start with Sunday night's Sure.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Festivities.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Right over there.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Lambeau Field.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: A mile away, Tyler?
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: No, less.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, not even.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: If you look out the window, you can see it from this brewery.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: So we got Green Bay 23, Dallas 13.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Dallas won the toss and took the ball, didn't they, Tyler?
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: You don't see it much anymore,
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: but they wanted to strike a blow with what they have going for them,
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: a heck of an offense.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: They took the ball and it was three and out, I believe, against Jonathan Gannon's
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Rejuvenated defense, and then the pack started playing.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, offense, snaps.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Golden played 63 of 75.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Watson played 66.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Savion Williams played 40.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Melton 18, and that's what it was.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: All right, let's start with Watson.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Third and third, I mean,
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: This team was magical on third down in the first half, especially the quarterback.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: I believe he was nine for 10 on third down in the first half.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And a lot of them were third and six and beyond.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're just breaking the Cowboys heart.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: They were solid and blitzing on first and second down, having success.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And then Love just shot them down.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Watson, third and 13.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: He made a good catch in the middle for 27.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Quite a bit of a run after the catch.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: He runs an over route from a slot on second and 13, gain of 28.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Just ran away from people.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Third and two,
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: we beat man coverage by the rookie,
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: the Ohio State player, Caleb Downs, gain of eight.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: And he dropped the 26-yard touchdown.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Now the ball, I believe, was ticked by the rookie rusher, Malachi Lawrence.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: I believe that ball was tipped.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: And if it was, you know, That certainly mitigates the situation.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: So that's Watson.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: He's playing really good.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Golden and Watson ranked five and six in yards by NFL receivers right now.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: All right, Golden.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: He's a dangerous cat, man.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Or right away, there's a cat blitz off the corner by Joey Porter.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: He missed that play.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: I think he has to make it minus two on a run.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: That was first play of the game.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: He runs a slant and go over there against the rookie,
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Siobhan Ravel, gain of 37, and then he gets a taunting penalty with his arms.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: What did you think of the taunting penalty, Bob?
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I know you don't like taunting.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: You know what I think, and I know what you think.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Come on, Bob.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: That was a bullshit penalty.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: I don't like it, T. Oh, my God.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: We're on a different page here.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: I don't like all the penalties.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: These two games I watched,
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: plus the game last night,
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: all of them were sickening in terms of amount of penalties.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: No continuity in these games whatsoever.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: These refs this season are way overboard.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the number of penalties would be compared
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: to this point last season, but there's got to be a lot more.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It's bad news.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: This game is – it's hard to watch.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: It's gross.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I mean – I don't know what it is.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: A lot of the officiating crews treat it like the preseason.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, exhibition season.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: And I want the playoffs to get here so everybody just swallows their whistles.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, you see it every year.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: You get to the playoffs and guys can play through that echo of the whistle.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: They're not calling these roughing the passer penalties.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: They sure as hell aren't calling that a taunting in the playoffs.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Why not just get to that place right now?
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know, do they like seeing themselves on TV?
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Do they want to make these calls so all their family members
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: and friends can see them flex their Hockey-Lean muscles for everyone in
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: the shmedium shirts?
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: It's not about you, refs.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Nobody gives a damn about you.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Get the hell out of the way.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Forever.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Go.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Go hide in a hole.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: It drives me insane.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: All Matthew Golden did, Bob, was flex his biceps.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: He wasn't even like he might have been doing it toward the fans.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: They say it's taunting when you do it toward an opponent.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: I guess there was an opponent down there because that was the nature of the play.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: There was a DB down covering a receiver and he just did this.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Who cares?
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: That was garbage.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: You want them to be robots?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Is that it?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: You want these players to not have any emotion whatsoever in the most violent sport
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: in the world?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: I don't like mocking an opponent, which he was clearly doing to Mr. Roosevelt.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was clear.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think he was clear.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: No.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: So, all right, I heard you out now.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Let's keep going, all right?
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Well, no, you got the floor.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Okay, third and sixth.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: I have nothing more to say about it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Everybody watching or listening to the pod,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: leave a comment on this post and let us know where you stand.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Are you with myself or do you have the incorrect opinion and do you agree with Bob?
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: They're all with you.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: They're all Packer fans.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Well, no, no,
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: no, no, no, no.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: We have objective consumers of Green Bay Packers football and all of football.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: I know that our subscribers think clearly.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: They don't just judge opinions based off of a comment section or the comments on
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: a tweet or a screenshot.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: They read, they digest, they consume, they think.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: So I will not minimize the intellect of our Loyal subscribers.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: I'm sure that they will come to the correct conclusion.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: How dare you demean our viewers like that, Bob?
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: How could you do such a thing?
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: All right, then let's go back to Mr. Golden.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: After his taunting,
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: third and six,
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: he catches a nine-yard touchdown on that post against Amir Speed, a former Spartan.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: He double caught that ball, but he made the play.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Then he's behind speed again.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: The ball is dropped into his hands and he drops a 43 yard touchdown.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Then he runs a corner route against speed again, drops a 23 yard touchdown.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Then he drops a low slant.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: I'd still give him a drop on that ball.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: And on a third and five out of the slot, he runs an out against downs again for 14.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Downs can't play the slot covering people.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, don't they?
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Jeez, you draft a guy and now he's covering man against Matthew Golden?
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Hopeless.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go to Savion Williams.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: It's like the most I've ever seen him play, 40 snaps.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: LeFleur is going to use this guy as a gadget guy,
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: and he got good mileage out of him in this game.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Third and five, ran an in against Downs, man coverage, gain of 15.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Comes out of the backfield deep against Barham.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: He was open.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: That was a 24 yard touchdown.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: The ball fell incomplete.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: And then he runs some motion behind the line,
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: runs a reverse off that motion, gain seven, I think it was.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Nice appearance for him.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Melton, 18, not much.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the tight end, Tucker Craft.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's played back to what he,
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I know he hasn't, he's not played back to what he was last couple of years.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Right away, he gets a bad run on the goal line.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: He missed Quinnen Williams minus one.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: He runs a sideline and up,
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: he was just smothered by a linebacker, I believe on the coverage, incomplete.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Poor sideline awareness, caught that ball out of bounds.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: Should have been inbound.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: He dropped a screen pass,
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: and he gave up a knockdown against Sean Gary,
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: who really didn't get a whole lot going in that game.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: Then you got Jonu Smith played nine, and Redmond played 25.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Jonu is kind of another target LeFleur can scheme with, and Redmond is a big heavy-duty blocker.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's it for the skill.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to the old line.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: All right, left to right.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't see the Bear game last week, but Morgan's playing better, Tyler, at left tackle.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: He is.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: I got him for one knockdown in this game, and there was a lot of dropbacks.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Love had 44 dropbacks, something like that, 46.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: I got one pressure.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: That's impressive.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to the left guard.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Tomlinson, you know, he's an old fashioned slugger, Tyler, you know, he hammers away.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: He's a bright guy.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: He's not going to wow you with anything he's doing athletically, but he's playing okay.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Now he gave up a sack on an in charge by Rashawn Gary.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: But it was a late chase.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: The sack occurred in 5.6 seconds.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: And when I time these sacks,
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I start right when the ball is snapped to click it immediately when
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: that quarterback can no longer continue.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: If I feel he's trapped and maybe he spins around in the grasp for .5,
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: I start it immediately when he's in the grasp.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Then Tomlinson had one bad run.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: He played good.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: One sack.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Really, that's his only pressure.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Solid effort.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Now, the poorest performance was by the center, Sean Ryan.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: He gave up two sacks in this game.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Quinnen Williams got him in 3.1, and Kenny Clark got him.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, he had a bad miss there, and that sack occurred in 2.6.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: He also gave up a hurry-holding penalty against Clark,
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: pressure against Ogbonie, and one bad run against Ogbonia.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: All right, the right guard.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: So we still haven't seen Kevin Zeitler.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: We've seen Travis Glover.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: For this is his third start?
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Tampa Bay, Chicago in this game.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Glover, he's a massive man.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Let's get his numbers one more time.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Let's get Travis Glover from Georgia State.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: He's a sixth round pick in 2024.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: This is his third year.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: He's 6'6 on the nose, 317.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: He ran 5-3-1.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: It's not bad.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: 24 on the test.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: So he's a smart offensive lineman.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: His athletic numbers were okay.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: He only did 20 on the bench.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Sometimes that's typical for coming from a small program.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Arms 34 and three fourths, good.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Hands average nine and three quarter.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: So, you know, they started Jacob Monk, that would be the first three games.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: He was drafted in the same year as Glover three years ago, but around earlier in the fifth.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Monk was really up and down, you know, he was a center.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: He's three inches shorter than Glover.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Coming out, he was, uh, well, five pounds lighter.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Now he's a lot faster.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: He ran 505.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Glover ran 531.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Monk's another smart guy with 25 on the test.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Short arms though, 32 and three ace.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: That makes a big difference.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: So Glover, you see him pull from right to left.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: He's a plotter, you know?
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Um, but in a good way, uh,
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: He gets a piece of people.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: He's not the greatest athlete in there.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's a sixth round pick, but he's been effective.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know about blown assignments, but he hasn't had a whole lot of misses.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: He had a bad run.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: He missed a pull coming over on Jay Sean Barham one time.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: He was ineligible downfield.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: He made a young guy's mistake and he gave up one hurry to Kenny Clark.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: I think he's been pretty solid.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: And the other guard, they were playing Donovan Jennings early in the year.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: You know, you forget Aaron Banks is, I don't even know if he's played this year.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: I guess he played the first game.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: He's got what a toe and a groin.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know, something like that.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: So he's going to be back.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: He didn't play great last year, but he's going to be in the mix.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to the right tackle, Anthony Belton.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Second round pick in 25.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Now let's look at his numbers.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: He's a massive guy.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: He and Glover are, They blot out the sun on that right side.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Belton, 6'6", same as Glover, 3'3", 6".
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: He's about 20 pounds heavier.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: He's even a better athlete.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: He ran 5'2", 8", a little better in the vert, a little better in the broad.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Bad on the bench, just like Glover, 20.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: His arms, boy, not great.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: 33 and 7'8", and 10 and a quarter hand.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: But Belton, he gave up a flush against Gary.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: And yeah, and he got a holding penalty on that play.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: And he had one bad run.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: He missed Vaughn Miller late for minus two.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, solid effort.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: So all these players got winning grades except for the center.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: And he probably, I mean, he wasn't bad by any means.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go to the running backs.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Strong plays 41, Marshawn Lynch 30.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Lloyd.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Lloyd, yeah.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Marshawn Lynch, wouldn't they love
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: to have him?
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: They could have, once upon a time.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's right.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: And Caleb Johnson, the fumbler, four snaps for him.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to Strong.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: So I dug out my draft series from 2022.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: He's 5'11 1⁄2", 203.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And he ran 4-3-9 coming out of South Dakota State.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Is that the Jackrabbits?
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: I believe so.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: What's North Dakota?
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: One of them is, I
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: think.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Strong.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: He had a poor test score, 11.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Good athlete, 38 on the vert.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, the Jackrabbits.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Jackrabbits.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: And they're playing good football these days.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: So Pierre...
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: He was a three-year starter up there for the Jacks.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Quote said one scout, he ran fast.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: In the passing game, he has a chance.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: He's super productive.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: When they played up a level against Colorado State, he showed up.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: There's a physical skill set there that can be developed.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: He ran the fastest 40 of the top 30 backs in 2022.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: I didn't see that Sunday night, but it's there.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: Quote, he's a much better player than James Robinson with Jacksonville was out of
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: that league, meaning the Missouri Valley, one scout said.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Had some long touchdown runs.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Sometimes he just doesn't hit the hole.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: He searches, likes to bounce.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I could see that.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Effective short receiver, average pass blocker.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: He rushed for 4-5-2-7 in his career in a 7-2 average.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: So...
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: His career, he's been with three teams,
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: New England, Cleveland, Green Bay.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: He's only played in his career 478 snaps.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: He's got four drop passes in his career.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: He hasn't played that much, but they're so desperate now.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Without Jacobs, they're playing the guy, Pierre Strong.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, do you believe that?
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: So they had no running game in this 26 carries, 57 yards.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: But he was effective in the passing game early during this magical third down stuff.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: It's third and 13.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: He catches a ball two yards deep into the flat.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: He breaks tackles by Barham and Amani Hooker, gains 14.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Hell of a play.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Third and eight, swing pass.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: The other flat gains 10.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Third and two.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: The middle's clog on that carry.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: And he bounces left end, gains six.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, it really showed instinct there.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Made a nice catch on a ball thrown behind him in the flat, gain a five.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And then he dropped a check down.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: But all in all, a good performance.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Lloyd, he dropped the screen.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: He got injured.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know, he came back a little couple plays.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Couldn't tell much in this game and Johnson played four snaps.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: All right, now Jordan Love.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: You know, this passer rating, he's at 74.8 because he only had one touchdown and one pick.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: So it looks like he played just a nothing, a nobody game.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: But the guy was tremendous as you talked about and we all saw it.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: He was to run, I mean,
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: This third down stuff,
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: the first drive, 90 yards, and we've gone through all these third down completions.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: And the Cowboys were bringing the house, and they were fresh.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: You know, pass rush was fresh at that point.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: And they got some rushers as Araku, Lawrence, Gary, Von Miller.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: The two tackles inside can do damage.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, they got people.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I thought their rush was pretty stiff.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: It was, they had three sacks and a lot of pressure.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: It didn't make any difference.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: You just sitting back there at six,
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: three and a half, surveying the scene, man, and throwing the ball on the button.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: That third and 13 ball to,
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: was that the one to Strong?
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: He sidestepped, no, he sidestepped the rush on that thing, just a couple steps.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: He had that feel.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: He drills the ball to Watson.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: It was just over Barham's reach.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Great throw.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: His cadence got Kenny Clark to jump.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Old Kenny, couldn't handle it.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: The interception was kind of a misread.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: They were in man, not zone.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: He was kind of nonchalant on that throw, as he tends to be at times.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: And then Golden saves a touchdown.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: That rule's crazy, isn't it?
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: He just grazes...
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Dee Winner's back with his glove.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: I guess he did it.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: The replay showed it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: But, I mean, at six, seven points to no points, unbelievable change of events.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was huge.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they did not score after that.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Then he's Barham, who I saw play at Michigan.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's really a violent player.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: He comes in and he knocks Love down.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: And so what?
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: He hits Watson in the middle for 28.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Go home, you know.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: He throws that perfect 43-yard bomb to goal and dropped.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: Third and five on the zone read keeper against Rashawn Gary, who bites awful on the thing.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Gain of 14.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: They might have known what was going on there with Rashawn Gary and his tendencies.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: Good point.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: A little bit.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: He's been on that stuff for years in Green Bay, hasn't he?
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Good point, Tyler.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's like a magnetic pull to the center toward the middle.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: That fourth and eight against the Chicago Bears in the playoffs.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Where are you going, Rashawn?
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Hold the edge.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Rashawn, okay, I got to look this up.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: I forgot.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: Rashawn's test score was nine.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Now, all right, so that's the Gary.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Then those Deadly rainbow throws.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: He puts so much height on an arc on those long bombs.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Three drop touchdowns.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, come on.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Passer rating could be 140.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Third and six, he scrambles around beautifully and finds golden for 21.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: I
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: mean, you know, poor Christian Parker, the ex-LeFleur assistant.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: What are you going to do, you know?
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Scores a touchdown on a sneak.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, they got no ground game, really, so he does it himself.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: Second half, fourth and three.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Third in the progression, he finds Kraft over at the sideline, gain of 14.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: He got knocked down on that throw, too.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Then he scrambles, Watson drops the 26-yard touchdown, perfect throw.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And then he had another pick, but...
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Mr. Duran Bland was rule out of bounds, no pick.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: So that's it for the offense, Tyler.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: The Watson drop touchdown, I guess it was deflected a little bit.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Do you give him any grace there?
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: He hit his hands.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: He should catch it, right?
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: if I was on the beat, Tyler,
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: I'd talk to a coach or two,
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: and I'd talk to Watson and one of his teammates and just get to the bottom of it.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: It means either a drop or it's not.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: You know, that's the way I kept it.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: There was no halves or anything.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: I just don't know.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: You got to talk to guys, look them in the eye, see if they're lying to you, you know.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: It's a tough call.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Love's feel for pressure was evident in this game too.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: It seemed like he knew where rushers were coming,
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: from what angles, how to move up, back, side to side.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: That's encouraging.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: If you're Green Bay,
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: and I don't know, I guess it's a question every week that I'll pose to you, Bob.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Left to right, offensive line, what do you do?
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: Like, Kevin Zeitler's there, waiting.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Zeitler's a former line who's, you know, played in noisy venues at the Ford Field.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: But you're winning with this crew.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: Do you screw
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: it up?
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: I would stay the way they are.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Now, they might not.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: What's the word, Tyler?
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Nowadays, he's ramping up.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: He's ramping up in a ramp-up period of sorts.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: But I'd go the way they are, and if Glover struggles, get him out of there.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: The running game issues, is that more an indictment of the running backs or the offensive line?
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: 75% back, 25% line.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: That's telling.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: They don't have a back who can create.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, these guys are just guys.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: We talk about it in the chat all last season with Jacobs and Kraft.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Those were the two players that would just say,
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: F this bleep, I'm taking the game over right now.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: How many runs did Jacobs have where he's got bodies hanging on him,
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: limbs hanging on him,
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: behind the line of scrimmage, and he's still getting four or five?
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: He's breaking three, four tackles, and it's a big game.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: I think it's mostly.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: I tell you, I like Pierre Strong, though.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: I think he has a role in this offense.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: Those are some big plays out of the backfield.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: He's got more juice than Marshawn Lloyd and Caleb Johnson.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: You don't think so?
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Lloyd can run too, Tyler, if we ever get a chance to see it.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, Lloyd ran 4.45, Strong ran 4.39.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: He's two years, he's got two more wear and tear on him, Strong does.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Strong's three inches taller, but Lloyd's about 20 pounds heavier.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Lloyd, they both have terrible test scores.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: So past pros, it's kind of an adventure.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Does it, I mean, do you have the flashbacks to 1998?
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: This reminds me of that season for Green Bay when Dorsey Levins went down
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: and it was week to week.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: Just trying to get, manufacture anything out of the ground game, right?
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Brett Favre is fresh off his three straight MVPs.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: You've got the ascendant Minnesota Vikings.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: They ended the Lambeau streak on a soggy Monday night game there at Lambeau.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: How many games in a row did Green Bay win at home?
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: God, I forget what it was.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: It lasted a few seasons.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: But anyways, Green Bay's trying to get a running game going.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: One week, it'd be...
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: Raymond Harris, didn't they get him from Chicago?
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: Travis Jervie,
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: Derek Holmes,
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: Bill's legend, Derek Holmes, had his...
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Derek led that club in rushing, I believe.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: Did he?
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, man.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: 98, auntie.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Derek led the club with 386.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: The pack averaged 3.4 per carry.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Levin's...
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: So that reminds me of the year Michael Haddix led the club in rushing.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: How about that, Tyler?
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: That's under Forrest Gregg in like 88?
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Where's Haddix?
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Oh no, more like 89 or 90.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: In 90, Michael led the club with 311.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: And a 3.2 average.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: His long for the year, 13-yard carry.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: Michael Hanks was a great guy.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: He was.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Former Eagle number one pick.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: So as you know, in my younger days in Western New York, I grew up a Packer fan.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: And that year, I can remember Champion Outlet.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: Remember the Champion Outlets?
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: Did you have those in Wisconsin?
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, it felt like Christmas.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, no.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, you didn't have them?
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: I wish they did.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: Jamestown, New York.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: And whenever dad took us to champion, it was like you could get jerseys for six bucks.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: And some of them would have paint splotches on them or a name misspelled or
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: the numbers were wrong or they were reversible.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: But they had a lot of blank jerseys.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: And I mean, how old was I that year?
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: I guess I was 10, 11 years old.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: And I can remember getting a blank Packer jersey and then going to Eminem Sports
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: in Salome, New York, and having Jervie 32.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: I had a,
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: and I only,
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: I remember this because my mom was going
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: through some old pictures back home this week.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: And she goes, Hey Ty, do you remember this?
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: And it was, uh, The Travis Jervie jersey.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: I thought Jervie was the answer, man.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: I think he had a great game against San Francisco that year.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: He busted out like this.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Look at the pop.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: This guy's got it.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Didn't like him and LaShawn Johnson have like a pet tiger or something?
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: Does that ring a bell?
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: A pet something or a tiger?
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: A tiger is something exotic.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're right.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: What year on Jervie?
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: He was there in 96 when they won it.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: He was the Citadel.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: That was the year that he actually got his shot for a hot minute.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: He had 106 yards rushing.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: And then the next year he didn't even carry.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, he shot.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 325 yards in 98.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: And let me see.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, when they beat San Francisco, 36-22 in the regular season.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: They lost him in the playoffs, obviously.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there he is.
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: 95 and a touch that game for old Travis.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: Did he make the Pro Bowl special teamer?
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: As a special teamer, yeah.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was a special team.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe Sean McVay can give him a ring.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: He could use a little special team's help.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: What college was Jervie from?
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: The Citadel.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: Citadel?
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: Citadel?
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: I forgot that.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: So Ron Wolfe drafted Travis.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: But anyways,
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: I guess my point,
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: the reason I kind of meandered into no man's land there,
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: talking about Travis Jervie and Pet Tigers,
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: they got Dorsey Levins back late that season.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: And you're covering the team day to day.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: I got to think their confidence was pretty high going into the postseason.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: to get their running back back fresh into that wild card game at San Francisco,
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: which they lost, obviously, on the last play or close to the last play.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: T.O., the catch two, all of that.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: I just remember, like, Dorsey Levin's coming back.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, now we have a run game.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: This is going to open up a lot of stuff.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: They're just dying for Josh Jacobs to get back.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:56SPEAKER_00: And we could spend a lot of time discussing That case,
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: that situation, what's sealed, what's not sealed.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: When it comes to the football, the football player, what he could give this team.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: If 75% of the run game struggles are on the backs,
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: as Bob put, and nobody's watching film closer than D-Bob McGinn, that would be huge.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: All right, Tyler, should we go to the D?
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, um.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: All right,
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: so we're going to be talking about Dennis Allen for the Bears next,
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: and now we're talking about Jonathan Gannon.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: This seven-man double-A gap stuff and seven people masked at the line,
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: and sometimes, you know, it's zero blitz.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you're sending four or five dropping.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: Are they all patterning themselves after Flores in Minnesota?
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, Mike Zimmer before him did that.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: And others have done it too, you know.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, I see these three teams in the North and they're hard to differentiate.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: It's so funny you bring that up.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: I was wondering the same exact thing.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: Blake Cashman,
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Eric Wilson, we've talked about Brian Flores a ton for those stories that go along.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: And I remember asking Eric,
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: Over the summer about Flores' ability to just invent stuff
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: and create different looks and different pressure packages because,
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: as Blake Cashman put,
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: we probably have talked about it,
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: like some of their,
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: one of their blitzes they were implementing in one practice,
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: Blake Cashman was like, what in the hell, what are we doing?
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: This player is wide open on this side of the field.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: And Flores told him,
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: I don't give a shit because the quarterback's eyes are going to be over there
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: because we're going to be in his face.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: But what Eric Wilson said is Flores loves copying other teams, other coordinators.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: He's constantly taking other people's stuff and implementing it into this scheme.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm not sure where – but you're right.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're popularizing it.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: They're the ones wreaking havoc.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: Tyler Shuck can hardly breathe in their last game for New Orleans.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, the Vikings are setting the standard.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: And I don't know.
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: That's got to be so tough as a quarterback,
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: if you're Jordan Love,
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: Jared Goff,
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: Caleb Williams, to be up at the line and to see everybody at the line of scrimmage.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: And you don't know who's blitzing, who's dropping.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: They wait until the last split second.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: The offensive line's got to figure out who has who.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: It's tough.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you know what you're doing and you've got answers, it could be a big play.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: But it's a play-to-play deal.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: So you've got to have smart inside backers to do this.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: Franklin's played a long time.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: This is his ninth year.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: He's a smart player.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: You can see that.
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: He scored 18 on the test.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Then you got McDuffie, who's a 15, and he's played, this is his sixth year.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: And then you got Tyrone Hopper, who's got a low score, 11.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: And they lost Edger and Cooper, who wasn't 11.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: So Eric Wilson's a 23.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: And Cashman, I think he was 27.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Let's look it up.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: And you got Harrison Smith.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: Cashman is a 24, Eric Wilson 23.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Anyway, it's been effective, and it unnerved Dak Prescott.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: He got pounded around.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: You know, their offensive line, pretty good, Tyler.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Those are veteran guys.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: It's a pretty damn good offensive line.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: It's a really good quarterback with terrific wideouts, and they just were stymied.
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's look at the front.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: So they lose Hargrave to a torn Achilles late in the Bear game.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying that's a blessing,
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: but I'm saying he's a target whenever he was on the field for teams to run at.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: So I don't think that's a blow at all.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: They lose Jonathan Ford, their biggest guy, 340, 350, whatever he is.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: The Cowboys,
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: with a good back and Javante Williams,
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: they could not exploit the interior of that defensive front to their credit.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: Jordan Riley, another massive man, remains on,
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: I think, IR designated for return.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: He could come back.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: He's another massive guy.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: Brinson hasn't played a snap this season.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: He could come back.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: I don't know what he's got.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: So who are they playing with?
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: They played with Wyatt, 46.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: Carl Brooks, 47.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Campbell, the street free agent, 32.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: And McClellan, the rookie third round picks, 40 snaps.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: So they played four people inside.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: Wyatt, he didn't make a play.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: He had a neutral zone penalty.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: I'd say he's off to a slow start.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: Carl Brooks, a lot more active.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss against the right tackle, Terrence Steele.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown against the center, Cooper Beebe, but he got roughing the passer penalty.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: Campbell and McCoy, they were just holding the fort, man.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: They didn't really make plays.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: I thought Kenny Clark played really well against his former team.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: But Green Bay, Dallas...
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Williams, 11 for 41.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: He didn't hurt anybody.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Goodson, two for zero.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to the outside.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: All right, Van Ness, 43, Cox, 39, Dennis Sutton, 36, and Sorrell, 40.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: So they're playing four guys equally, really.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: And Mosby just had a couple snaps.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: All right, let's start with Van Ness.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: interesting,
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: the first play of the game, they were in a four-man, four-down lineman front.
- 56:31SPEAKER_01: He played defensive tackle in that thing.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: They had two other edges, and him at DT, they ran Williams right at him for eight.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: That was his longest run of the day in 10, 11 carries.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: He had a neutral zone penalty.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: He had a flush against the big left tackle, Tyler Gartens.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: He had another flush against Guyton.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: He had a roughing the passer penalty,
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: nullified the interception by Carrington Valentine,
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: and he had a sack against Guyton in 4.0.
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to Brenton Cox.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: He blew a sack when he beat the tight end span forward.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Fourth and five,
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: he dropped in zone,
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: out of that seven-man front,
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: and they hit the Flournoy in his area, the little slot gain of 11.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: He had half a flush later, and he had another flush, got a holding penalty on Steele.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: Pretty impressive game for Cox.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Maybe his best moments of the year as a pure rusher.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: Dennis Sutton.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: He got a flush on an inside on a stunt against Steele and he whiffed on
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: a sack himself just like Cox did previously.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: He had a taunting penalty.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: I'm not really sure what it was for.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown against Guyton and the tight end.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: It was a very nice play against double team.
- 58:01SPEAKER_01: And he had half a flush later.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: Let's go to Sorrell.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: He beat Steele inside.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against the tight end Ferguson.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: And he had a knockdown on a stunt against the right guard,
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Tyler Booker, the former first round pick.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: So all in all, I think those four guys did pretty well.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: Vaness, I mean Sutton, Sorrell, Cox.
- 58:31SPEAKER_01: When you add Parsons to that mix, they might really have something.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the linebackers.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: So they don't have Cooper, so they start McDuffie 43 and
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: Franklin played all 78. Who plays Thursday night?
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: Green Bay does, right?
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: No, that was Thursday night.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: They play Thursday next week.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: They've got Carolina.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: This week, it's Bears-Patriots.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: All right, McDuffie played 43, and they're getting him out of there, and they're splitting time.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: Hopper played 33.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: So McDuffie, third and four.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: He's in the flat, ball thrown to Javante Williams.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: He made really good man coverage, tackle for no gain, they punted.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: And he had a third and two, he was unblocked, hurried, good play.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: Franklin, he had kind of a quiet day, you know, the ex-Colt.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown, he was unblocked, and that's when he hurt Dak.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: With the rib, and on the next play, Dak threw the pick.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: It had residual benefits there.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: It was a hell of a hit.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: Fair, no cheap at all, no penalty.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: Do you believe that, Tyler?
- 59:57SPEAKER_01: No penalty for roughing the passer.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: That's why I love the college game right now.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_01: You can hit QBs, you know?
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_00: And if you hit quarterbacks like you just said, there's a – A residual effect.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: The quarterback is thinking about it.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: And it's going to lead to something the next play or the next series or the next quarter.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, he's two steps late to the sideline on another.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it was a run.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: I think it was a pass.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's not going to.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: Give you great range.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: Inside backers, that's what Cooper gave you was range.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: Franklin gives you a brain and toughness, but he doesn't give you range.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: You know, he kind of reminds me in a way of Hardy Nickerson.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: And I looked up his season.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: He was a five-time pro bowler in Tampa Bay.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_01: He played one year here at the age of 37.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: That was an 0-2.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: I looked at my final grades on the guy, forgot Hardy.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_01: He played one year and then he retired.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: I gave him a D as in dog.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: I said he offered more presence than Bernardo Harris in the middle and maybe was
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: a little better in coverage.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: But Harris's big edge against the interior run made him the better choice.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: At least Nickerson didn't get hurt.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: I said he's too old, too slow, too small and too soft.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: He was the number one reason why the Packers allowed their most yards per carry,
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: 4.84, in 46 years.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: You've got to tell it the way it is.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: And send Hardy off to retirement.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: So Franklin's better than Hardy Nickerson.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: Franklin's got only one Pro Bowl, though, so he might hit a wall at some point.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: The Packers version.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, these – I'm thinking of Hardy Nickerson in his Buccaneers days
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: and – Much different Hardy Nickerson then.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: So in 02, Tyler, how old were you?
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: Been 15.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: Was that like the Joe Johnson, Hardy Nickerson?
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: Mike Sherman did a handful of a bunch of signings.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: Who else am I forgetting?
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_00: There was another signing in there.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: That'll come to me.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: So that would have been Sherman's third year in 02.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: They had a good team.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: And what did they do in the playoffs?
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: That's not the ego.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: Mike Vick?
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, in Green Bay, yeah, okay.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, that was the Vick year.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_00: Terry Glenn, that's who I was thinking of.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: They signed Terry Glenn in free agency.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Well, he was a quiet dude.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: You couldn't get a word out of that guy, man.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: All right, the linebackers.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_01: If you've got McDuffie 4'6",
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: flat coming out and Franklin 4'6", flat two coming out, you lack range.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: And that's why I think they're playing Hopper.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: He gives you some of that Cooper explosiveness and speed.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: The Hopper ran 4'7", one, but now he's a lot faster than that, the way he plays.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: So what about Hopper?
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: 33 snaps.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, he could be a key factor this season.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Is he ready to go in year three?
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_01: He's a third-round pick from Missouri, you know.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: All right, he missed the tackle on span four, the big tight end in the flat, guy gained six.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: Third and 20, he makes a bonehead play.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, just stay away from that receiver.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: He's short, the tight end on a short stick or something.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: Illegal contact, first down Dallas.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: Bad mistake.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: And he broke up a pass against a tight end, nice play.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: All right, so now let's go to the secondary.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: All right, Nixon played all 78.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, they had three guys play all 78, Williams, McKinney, Nixon.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_01: Nixon, I mean, he played good.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: He's up against Lamb and Pickens.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: Pickens didn't pee a drop and Lamb was under control.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: Nixon played good.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: Third and four, they hit Flournoy in man coverage, gain of seven, fine.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: Third and six, they hit Pickens on an end for seven, fine.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: Third and five, he made a nice stop on Lamb on a bubble, no gain.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: He's playing good.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_01: Cisse on the other side got hurt late.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, he had that pick when Lamb fell down.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: He caught the ball.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: A lot of guys will drop that pick.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Fourth and two, Lamb beat him inside, bump and run, gain of 17.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: And then he got hurt.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: He got a stinger.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: Don't know his status.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_01: So that brought in Valentine, who made a great pick on that first snap.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: And then he lost it with Van Ass.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: I thought Valentine looked pretty good.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's a pretty solid number three corner.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_01: And then Bullard.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: Is it Bullard or Bullard, Tyler?
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_01: Bullard.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Bullard.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: He's the slot.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: Third and three, man covers, overroute to Lamb, gain of 16.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, Lamb's going to beat everybody in the league.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: Fourth and two, he broke up a ball to Lamb, was a hell of a play.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: He got a holding penalty from Javante Williams on a blitz.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: Bullard comes in and he brings it, man.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: And then he gave up a touchdown pass to Flournoy late, gain of six.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: The safeties, McKinney, I have no problem with anything he did in the run game here or hitting.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_01: He got a knockdown unblocked on a seven man pressure and he had good close on
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: a bubble screen gain of one.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, with all this pressure and Dak couldn't really challenge downfield all night.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: So the safety were sitting back on that two shell as much as they could.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_01: Or if they're bringing seven, they're in a four across man look, but he's fine.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_01: And then Williams, I mean, it was a hell of a pick.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: Up in the Harrison Smith position.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: He's on the line.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_01: He bails out from the line of scrimmage.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_01: Great disguise by him and Jonathan Gannon.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_01: And he gets that pick at the three-yard line.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: And that eventually set up a touchdown, too.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown when he was unblocked.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: And he had another one when he got nailed for roughing the passer.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_01: That takes care of that.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the special teams.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: So, Smack bounced back.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_01: He hit from 25, 44, and 29.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: His kickoffs,
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: four of the six were either on the numbers or outside,
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_01: and I think that's the desired location for most NFL teams.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_01: Whalen, you know, his first punt was terrible, and it set up a touchdown.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_01: That was 3-5-9 on the hang.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: His other two were good.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: Sky Moore's got some kind of injury.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_01: He's on injured reserve, so they're playing good.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: Who is this guy?
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: Christian Owen?
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know the player.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_01: And he's not on the 53.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: He was a game day activation.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: He had a punt return for 16.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: Sturdivant averaged 25-5 on two kickoffs, replacing Sky.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_01: That's it for the pack.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: They're 4-2, Ty.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Defensively,
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Gannon versus Jeff Halfley.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_00: It's interesting, you know, watching their press conferences, they couldn't be more different.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_00: Like Jeff Halfley just has such a command of the room and he's telling stories
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_00: and he's thinking big and he's bringing you in his world.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_00: And you can see how he would just absolutely ace a job interview.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_00: And that does mean something.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_00: You know, he's regarded as, I've talked to players, they love his leadership style.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Gannon's up there.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_00: He doesn't give you a hell of a lot.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: It's very curt, very to the point, in and out.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: And then you watch their defenses and very different.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: I don't know,
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: I want your opinion on this,
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_00: but it just seemed like Halfley, bend but don't break, keep it in front of you.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_00: They had to weather some awful injuries, obviously, late last year, and he may do.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_00: But I don't know.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_00: I feel like Jonathan Gannon's scheme is more complex,
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_00: more unpredictability, some more pressure, more simulated pressure.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: It's early, but six games, that's a decent amount to chew on here.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_00: Upgrade or downgrade?
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: No, I don't.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_01: I've never seen those pressers, Tyler, so I don't know what you're referring to there.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like what Gannon's done.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I definitely like it.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: He's aggressive.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_01: Where do they rank in takeaways?
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: Well, Green Bay is plus four in turnover diff, tied for fifth.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Takeaways, he's tied for first in the league with 11.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: Seattle also has 11th.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: So he's tied with Mike McDonald out there.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: That's a hell of a start.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know much about Gannon at Arizona.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like what I've seen.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, again, we're going to learn a lot now.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_00: You just faced CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens and Dak Prescott
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: and some explosiveness,
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_00: though, so that it That was the first real test, if you think about it.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_00: Carson Wentz and Jalen Daniels and Tyson Bagent.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_00: It's been not exactly murderer's row encouraging.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: It just seemed like they were playing hard.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know how you quantify that with a metric,
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: but man,
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: they were finishing hits, finishing plays, swarming in a way that we haven't seen.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: In a while.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: And that's Micah Parsons' play style.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_00: So he'll be a welcomed addition.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_01: You know who kind of the ringleader is?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_01: Is this Bullard guy that you went down to Midnight Train to Georgia.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: Milledgeville, Georgia.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_01: And he's kind of a,
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_01: to use a word that's being used in political circles, a firebrand for the defense.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_01: He is.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: Is he Tyler when you talk to him?
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_00: He does not give a you-know-what.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_00: He wants to throw his body into harm's way in every conceivable way.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_00: And for those who missed it,
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_00: check out the story on Javon Bullard,
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_00: Killer Instinct,
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_00: wrote it in March,
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_00: and you'll understand where he comes from in Milledgeville,
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_00: what he has witnessed in his hometown.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, what he did in college.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, not getting Marvin Harrison Jr. out of that game.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_00: He's just kind of embracing him.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_00: Being the villain.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_00: He's like, make me the villain.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_00: I don't give a shit.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: I'll lean into it.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: I'll be that player.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_00: And he'll toe that line.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_00: So they've needed
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: that a long
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: time.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_01: How many crazy hitting safeties have they had?
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: I'm going to name one early.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Kenny Stills.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_01: My man, Kenny.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_00: I can remember interviewing Kenny Stills for a story about his son back
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_00: in those journal Sentinel days when he was coming in.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's not – I mean,
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_00: back on those teams that we covered,
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: Morgan Burnett was a solid safety, but he wasn't taking anybody out.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: Mr. Charlie Chuck Cecil.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_00: Chuck Cecil, yeah.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_00: How long would he last in today's NFL?
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_01: Five minutes.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_01: He'd be late for the door like Bob Seger once said.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: He'd be out of there.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, they tried,
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: I guess, ha-ha Clinton Dix, you know, first round pick, had a few moments, but.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_01: Leroy and Pete Robinson were the best pair.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, obviously.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: Best, yeah, but crazy people.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_00: Jerron McMillan, I think they saw a little crazy in there.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_00: They liked his test numbers and everything, but he didn't really last that long.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the thing.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: That's why I've defended Brian Gutekinds on this pod.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: He's taken more of those risks that his predecessor did not.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: It's a crazy game.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: You need some crazy temperaments out there.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_00: Can Bullard cover?
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_01: Not bad, Tyler.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_01: He's not going to go play outside and man cover somebody, but he's been okay from the slot.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_01: Now we're going to talk about Kyler Gordon,
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_01: but before Long, I mean,
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_01: Gannon might just start turning him loose from that slot,
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: you know, and he comes in there with malice in his heart.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Jeez.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: That's what turned the wild card when Dennis Allen did that with Those corners,
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_00: it seemed, and you're going to get into how they closed out that one over Atlanta.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_00: If you can time it up, right,
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: it's about the timing and the unpredictability and not giving the quarterback
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_00: that one, two seconds to audible adjust and beat it.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to Bears, Falcons down at Atlanta.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Tyler, every time I see a game in Atlanta, all those seats are red, right?
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: There's never anybody in those seats.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: What is it?
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: There's so much to do there, and it's just this great place, and people just don't show.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_01: It's like L.A.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_01: They don't care, I don't think.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_01: They're into the SEC, and they're all hungover after the SEC Saturdays.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: They don't care about their Falcons.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_00: It's true, though.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, when they're good, they come alive, like most fan bases.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_00: You know, when they went to the Super Bowl in 2016, I was at Bleach Report.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_00: I spent a lot of time around the Falcons.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_00: I remember interviewing Jermaine Dupree for a story.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_00: Does that name Margot Bell
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: at all?
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: Jermaine who?
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_00: Dupree.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_01: How do you spell it?
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: D-U-P-R-I.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_00: He's a rapper.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_01: Famous track.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Atlanta.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_00: But they came alive.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_00: Like, the city was, like, if they're good and they're a Super Bowl contender, I suppose.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_00: But other, yeah, if they're middling, it's SEC country.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_00: It's tough.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, you're battling the Georgia Bulldogs just, what, an hour, hour and a half away.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_00: But This should have been a game where I know we're going to get into
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_00: the Bears' point of view on this matchup.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_00: I don't understand Atlanta just not handing the ball off to Bajon Robinson
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: as this game was getting away.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_00: You saw it on that early run.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_00: He is just on a different level.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_00: If you're turning this into a Michael Penix throwing the ball 30-40 plus times,
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_00: Probably going to lose.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_00: They needed to play on their terms at home,
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_00: get that crowd behind you, which they will when you give them reason to.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: And they couldn't.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: From the jump, early, that first drive, Caleb Williams had a dropped interception.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: When Atlanta dropped that pick, I believe there was a flag on that play.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_00: A flag on Chicago.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_00: A hold, maybe.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: So Atlanta would have declined that, gotten the ball.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_00: You know, then you have a muff a few drives later.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: They shot themselves in the foot continuously.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_00: They kind of mounted a little bit of a rally late to give themselves a chance.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_00: But Atlanta's only chance this year is if they get John Robinson rolling early
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: and not drop interceptions.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_00: And you do that against Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_00: This Bears offense now at full strength.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_00: Sayonara.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_00: Sayonara.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_01: So the Packers defeat the Cowboys, who were 2-3, now they're 2-4.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: And they're one of the favorites in the NFC East right now.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_01: And Atlanta came in 2-3.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_01: They're 2-4 against the Bears.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_01: They got as good a shot as anybody to win that crummy NFC South.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_01: And they both got disposed of by the North clubs.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, the big bad North, huh, Tyler?
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_01: Whoa, what a division.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_01: What are they, 16-6?
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_01: 16-6.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_01: So the Lions, they haven't even played a division game yet, you know.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go to the Bears.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_01: Great start.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_01: Williams missed three games.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_01: this team's been terrible in the red zone and they convert four out
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_01: of five red zone trips.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_01: The game was marred by Scott Novak's officiating crew.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know how many penalties.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_00: Let me work it out.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_01: 12 for 133 for one team and four for 31.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, there was more in the Packer game.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_01: Just crazed.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_01: All right, the receivers.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_01: Odunze, 74.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_01: Burden only played 30 and I don't know why.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_01: Cleef Raymond, 36.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_01: That little Thomas guy, 10.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: And that's it.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, Rome, he's pretty good coming across the middle, Tyler, with that big frame.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: He extends for a great pass.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_01: He's up in here.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_01: He extends, hands catch, balls thrown hard.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: That was against Mike Hughes, gain of 23.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_01: And then he had a 22-yard reception loss on a holding penalty.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_01: He had a huge yak effort on that play.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, Burden,
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_01: every game, once or twice, he's going to make things happen after the catch.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_01: He made Mike Hughes miss on the sideline stop route,
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_01: gain an extra eight on a play that ruptured into 25.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_01: And then they flooded a zone.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: He caught another ball on the sideline, a gain of 25.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_00: Burden's more of a sideline receiver,
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_01: but no, not exclusively.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: It's not a, no, it's not a tell.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: Raymond, he's had a hell of a year.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_01: He ran a shallow cross, made Mike Hughes miss, gained a 13.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_01: And Thomas made a nice hands catch on a fastball from
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_01: Williams for a gain of 14.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_01: Let's look at Zavin Thomas.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_01: He's a third-round pick this year, 5'10.5", 192.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_01: The guy ran 4'2".6".
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_01: 36 on the bird.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: He's got really small nine inch hands, arms 30 and a half.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: That's okay for his height.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: So he's been there fourth wide out and Jotty Walker.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: He's four.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: Thomas has been at four, eight, four B Walker got thrown out for something on special teams.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: Now the tight ends Loveland played 68 out of 77.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_01: So the bears play Thursday night.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_01: So this heat, Their offense could be tired when they host New England.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: Loveland, 68.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: Komet, 57.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: Roush, 24.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_01: So let's start with Komet.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_01: Now, he doesn't really get the ball much.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_01: You know, he's got seven catches in six games.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_01: He's just an afterthought.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: They got all these other weapons.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_01: He is a hell of an afterthought, though.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_01: He's a really good tight end.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_01: He had one and a half bad runs, but he can block.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_01: I don't think his blocking has been quite as consistent this year.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_01: He's a good player.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_01: And then Roush, the rookie, I think he's a third round pick, if I remember.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_01: He had a false start.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_01: And, you know, he's generally a blocker.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the offensive line left to right.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_01: So they start Benedette,
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_01: who plays 60 at left tackle,
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_01: and then Ozzy Trapilo,
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_01: who got hurt in the playoff game last year with that torn patellar tendon.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_01: Ozzy's a second-round pick in 25.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_01: He's 6'8", 319.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_01: Ozzy comes in and plays 17 snaps as he's ramping up.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: All right, Benedette.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_00: Can we change our podcast to ramping up?
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_01: Benedict gave up a flush early to Ekebaum.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_01: He got a holding penalty on the thing,
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_01: and he gave a flush to Cameron Thomas,
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_01: and he had half a bad run,
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_01: and he had another flush against,
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_01: man, that Ivy guy for Atlanta, number 51, Jared Ivy.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_01: God, he plays hard.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, now Ozzie comes in and plays a little bit in the second quarter,
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_01: a little bit in the fourth.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_01: His first action in 10 months.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_01: Now that guy looked really good down the stretch last year, man.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_01: And I mean, all things considered, I think he's better than Benedict.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_01: And I think he's better than Braxton Jones, who's now on IR, I believe.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_01: And then Tripilo in the second half, he gives up a holding penalty to Ekobom.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_01: And then they took him out in the middle of the fourth.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_01: So that's where they are.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_01: This week against New England, I assume it'll be the same kind of rotation.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_01: All right, the left guard, Tooney.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_01: A lot of pulling in this game.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_01: And another thing,
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_01: he is so adept coming off knowing when to leave a double team when
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_01: the linebacker fires to his left or his right.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_01: He picks up that backer so adroitly.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_01: There was a running play, gained eight yards.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, he just got, came off the double, got the backer.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_01: It's just textbook.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_01: He's doing pulling.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_01: He gave up half a sack against his former teammate, Jervon Dexter, on a stunt.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_01: TT stuck stunt inside, and he gave it up.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, Bradbury.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_01: Half a bad run on the linebacker at the second level, Divine Diablo.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_01: Devine, yeah.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, then he got bulled back by Dexter on a knockdown.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: He had half a flush against Dexter.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_01: He was on the ground pretty much in this game.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_01: And he gave up half a sack against Dorlis on a stunt, TT inside, same one that got Tooney.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_01: That Doros, man, I remember the Packer game.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_01: That Brandon Doros plays hard, too.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, the right guard is Jackson.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: He played 50 snaps before going out with a hip injury.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_01: Don't know his status for Thursday night, but that's a big question mark.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_01: He played fine.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_01: He's a hell of a player.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_01: They came in with Mr. Newman, a sixth-round pick in 25 from Michigan State.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_01: They have not had many players there.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_01: But this guy, he played 27 snaps for Jackson.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_01: He had a fine block on the three-yard touchdown by Roshon Johnson.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_01: He had half a bad run, and he had a bad run on a draw play.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_01: I thought he was an aggressive drive blocker in this game and his pass pro was fine.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_01: He's six, three and a half, 3.08, ran 5.09.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_01: Don't have a test score.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_01: His arms are short, 31.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_01: Hands are small, nine and a quarter.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_01: So he might be in there against kind of a rugged New England front that bears watching.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_01: And then the right tackle, Darnell Wright.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, he dominates on this bubble screen.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_01: He goes out there and he hammers the safety.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_01: Sidney Brown was acquired from the Eagles.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_01: And he just dominates the hell out of the guy and gets called for holding.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can't block too good, can you, Tyler?
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_01: Or you're going to get zapped.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, the old adage is true.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_00: You could call holding just about every play.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: It's such a cherry-picked crew-to-crew judgment call.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_00: It's been that way forever.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_00: So just let him play.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_01: Just let him know that.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_01: Wasn't he the guy on this one?
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: Know that?
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, we didn't write, he gave up, oh, all right.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_01: Then he had a bad run against Ivy,
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_01: a hurry to Dorlis, and he gave up a sack on an upfield charge by Dorlis in 3.7.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_01: You know, Wright's, he can be compared to Panay Sewell.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_01: They both have their off plays.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, when it was Chad Clifton or Ken Rutgers or Tauscher,
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: the great tackles I covered, maybe not great, but really good, Brian Balaga.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_01: I'd be on those guys if they had a letdown and gave up a sack, you know, a flat outright sack.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_01: These guys are so good and they're getting paid so much money, they just can't have any letdown.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_01: You let the other guys who are making minimum or something have the letdowns,
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_01: you can't have it from these studs.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's the line.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to the running backs.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_01: So Monungay misses his second or third straight game, second straight game.
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_01: Swift, 45, Roshon Johnson, 31.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_01: They did not.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_01: So they only had two backs active in this game.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_01: Maybe they had another guy brought up.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, Xavier Scott was three, the ex-Viking.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, Swift.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_01: Third and goal, man.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_01: Ben Johnson runs up the gut.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_01: Do you believe that?
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_01: Huge hole, head down, four-yard touchdown.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_01: Ben's a crafty dude, man.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_01: Swift, you know, I keep saying he's not a bouncer.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_01: He stays inside, but he can't be typecast.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_01: He's going off left tackle.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_01: And he makes a subtle move and he freezes the safety Watts, bounces outside, gains 14.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_01: He can do that stuff too.
- 1:28:27SPEAKER_01: And a one yard touchdown runner, right tackle, nice surge.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_01: Roshon Johnson, we haven't seen him.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_01: He hardly played last year.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_01: Saw him a couple of years ago when the offense was bad.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_01: He had, how many touches?
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_01: 15 touches for 85 yards.
- 1:28:47SPEAKER_01: He, let's review it.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_01: He's sixth, fourth round pick in 23.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_01: This is his fourth year.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_01: He's six foot, 222, ran 455, 17 on the test.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_01: So in this game, he was involved in that hook and ladder with a Dunzig, play gained 14.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_01: Runs a quick,
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_01: quick ball route in the flat,
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_01: just a diagonal third and six against Ekebaum, gain of 14.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_01: Second effort on the first touchdown.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_01: And he lost a fumble in the mid fourth quarter.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_01: Swift has been their fumbler.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_01: Bates, the safety, punched that thing out and it led to a Falcon touchdown and their comeback.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_01: Now Caleb Williams.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_01: So he misses three games with the hammy.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_01: He starts out 12 for 12 for 142.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_01: First play of the game, he runs a naked boot to the left.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_01: Hits Loveland for 16.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_01: Good call by the play caller over there.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_01: He gets flushed.
- 1:29:50SPEAKER_01: He threw that ball up for grabs that you're talking about and Watts picks it off.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_01: He dropped the interception.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_01: Should have had it.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_01: All right, in the red zone, Caleb takes a delay penalty.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_01: It's on him.
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_01: He steps through the rush,
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_01: extends the play,
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_01: makes a very risky throw on the run to the right to Loveland for
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_01: a touchdown 14 yards.
- 1:30:21SPEAKER_01: I guess if you got this guy in the field,
- 1:30:23SPEAKER_01: you got to hold your breath sometimes and he's going to make plays.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_01: He's done it his whole life and he's going to make some bonehead plays.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_01: He fumbled on the shotgun snap, recovered it himself.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_01: He drills a Dunne on a dig, gain a 23.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_01: Now the second half, he's throwing the ball away smartly, Tyler.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_01: We talked about it last year, what he didn't do as a rookie.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_01: He had like three of them.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_01: Of his six incompletes, he had three of these.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_01: He audibles, you can see him.
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_01: He's audibling to cover weaknesses.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_01: He hits burden in the flat on one of those.
- 1:31:02SPEAKER_01: First off coverage, gain a nine.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_01: Two sacks he took in the second half, which again fueled this Falcon coverage.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_01: One was in 6.0 and the next one was in 5.9.
- 1:31:16SPEAKER_01: You cannot have that stuff going on.
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_01: And third and six, he got an offsides penalty with his cadence on the Falcons.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_01: And then he ran a quarterback sneak on third and one for two.
- 1:31:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's back.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_01: He's solid.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_01: Now he's playing New England.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_01: So that's it for the offense, Tyler.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, Ben Johnson's been speaking about the completion percentage since day one.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_00: And he's got to be pretty pleased with that.
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_00: Three of those are throwaways.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_00: That accuracy would be pinpoint a lot of short to intermediate stuff
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_00: because you know you've got the big play capabilities.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_00: You know, it just looked like it was seven-on-seven playground stuff.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_00: Easy.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_00: Everything was so easy for the Chicago offense until Atlanta kind of woke up and made it a game.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_00: Looking forward to this one Thursday night.
- 1:32:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:32:18SPEAKER_00: Should be a good one.
- 1:32:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, Dennis Allen, he had the number one coming in, the number one third down defense.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_01: You know, they don't have their down defense Two-Edge Rushers.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_01: No, wait a minute.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 1:32:36SPEAKER_01: Atlanta's down two.
- 1:32:41SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:32:44SPEAKER_01: The Bears are down two-Edge Rushers.
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_01: Right, Montez Sweat.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_01: The Suspended Sweat.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_01: The Suspension.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_01: And
- 1:32:57SPEAKER_01: who's the other rusher?
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_01: I can't think.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_00: Turner, second year, Austin Booker in there.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_01: Booker is a starter.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_01: Okay, forget it.
- 1:33:15SPEAKER_01: And they're down one linebacker, TJ Edwards, and one safety, Colby Bryant out for the year.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_01: But they really played their butts off in this game.
- 1:33:24SPEAKER_01: All right, up front, Grady Jarrett played 39.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_01: Street played only 17.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_01: Turner played seven coming back from injury.
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_01: And Lynch played, I think, a season high 37.
- 1:33:39SPEAKER_01: And Vandenberg played eight.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_01: Gallimore 13.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_01: So they got a wide rotation there.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_01: Grady Jarrett, the old man.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_01: Has played the most snaps.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_01: Played pretty good, Tyler.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against the center, Nuzal.
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_01: A hurry against the left guard, Bergeron.
- 1:33:59SPEAKER_01: Got a holding penalty against Bergeron.
- 1:34:01SPEAKER_01: He's a threat.
- 1:34:03SPEAKER_01: He hasn't worn down yet.
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_01: They've got to have him, and he has come through.
- 1:34:07SPEAKER_01: He's having a nice year.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_01: Lynch, who hasn't done much previously, he's just been a power guy.
- 1:34:14SPEAKER_01: He had a batted ball on fourth and five, and he had a hurry against Bergeron.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_01: He looked all right.
- 1:34:19SPEAKER_01: Vandenberg, that guy from Georgia Tech, it's getting better.
- 1:34:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's not playing much, but he's got some strength and he's got some hustle.
- 1:34:33SPEAKER_01: Street only played 17, so he'll be fresh for Thursday night.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_01: Minus five, he smelled a lot of screen, tackled the guy.
- 1:34:41SPEAKER_01: He's kind of a penetrating player.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, like you said about Bijan, You would think they could pound the heck out of this front.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_01: You've got a small backer behind in Bush.
- 1:34:52SPEAKER_01: You've got another backup backer.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_01: You don't have Edwards there, so you're playing Jackson, another small inside backer.
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_01: Run the stupid ball, and instead you give him nine carries.
- 1:35:02SPEAKER_01: The guy gets 61.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_01: Average is 6'8".
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_01: Tyler, malfeasance on the part of Tommy Reese.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_00: Kevin Stefanski.
- 1:35:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_00: Doesn't make much sense.
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_00: Now they didn't have the ball.
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_00: Plus you're keeping the Bears off the field.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_00: You think they'd want these long drives.
- 1:35:23SPEAKER_01: His time of possession was horrible, but that's their own fault.
- 1:35:27SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_01: The edge guy.
- 1:35:30SPEAKER_01: So you don't have sweat.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_01: You got Booker.
- 1:35:34SPEAKER_01: He had one hurry.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_01: He gives effort.
- 1:35:38SPEAKER_01: I like him.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_01: The interesting thing now was Hardy, who played 34 snaps.
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_01: Daniel Hardy has been a special teams daredevil since he made the club in.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_01: He's been here five years.
- 1:35:56SPEAKER_01: He was a seventh round pick in 22.
- 1:35:59SPEAKER_01: Five years.
- 1:36:01SPEAKER_01: I can't say I've ever seen him as much as this.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_01: He was a wild, reckless hitter on teams.
- 1:36:07SPEAKER_01: And when he did play a little bit late in games, yeah, he's a big hustler, man.
- 1:36:14SPEAKER_01: Let's look at him.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_01: He's a shade under 6'2".
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_01: He weighed 235 coming out.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_01: He ran 469.
- 1:36:21SPEAKER_01: He had a 40-inch vert.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_01: He's got long arms, 32 and a half, 33 and a half.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_01: He's a JC player in college.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_01: So Hardy played.
- 1:36:32SPEAKER_01: He looked pretty good, Tyler.
- 1:36:34SPEAKER_01: He really helped him.
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_01: This is Daniel Hardy.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_01: He played left end and third and long.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_01: He got a hurry, an effort hurry right away.
- 1:36:44SPEAKER_01: That's Sweat's position.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_01: He got a sack on a stunt against the right tackle, Jawan Taylor, 3.0.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_01: And he had a hurry up the field against Taylor.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_01: That was encouraging for the Bears.
- 1:37:02SPEAKER_01: Chroma, a guy I hadn't seen, second year free agent, he played 14 snaps.
- 1:37:08SPEAKER_01: And I guess that's the edges.
- 1:37:10SPEAKER_01: It was Booker and Hardy primarily.
- 1:37:16SPEAKER_01: And, oh, the guy on the injured reserve is the lost, Odin Dingbo, that was the guy.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_01: And he's on IR, so they're thin on the edge.
- 1:37:28SPEAKER_01: Are they going to be looking to make a trade maybe?
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_01: They could.
- 1:37:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think they need more personnel on that front seven on defense.
- 1:37:36SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 1:37:37SPEAKER_01: All right, the linebackers.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_01: So you got the two starters out.
- 1:37:42SPEAKER_01: And let's look at Sewell, who played the strong side.
- 1:37:47SPEAKER_01: And then inside you had Bush and Jackson.
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_01: So let's look at Sewell, Panay's brother.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_01: You know, he played a lot last year and then he got hurt maybe in November out for the year.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_01: I can't remember the injury.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_01: I think it was a knee, maybe an Achilles.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_01: Played the strong side when they had a 4-3 against base offense.
- 1:38:08SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss.
- 1:38:10SPEAKER_01: He read a bubble screen wide.
- 1:38:12SPEAKER_01: He beat a block by Zacchaeus.
- 1:38:14SPEAKER_01: Nice play.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_01: He had a fine chase down of Drake London on that long play for 37.
- 1:38:20SPEAKER_01: He chased him down.
- 1:38:21SPEAKER_01: He really gave great effort.
- 1:38:23SPEAKER_01: He always does that.
- 1:38:25SPEAKER_01: Then DeMarco Jackson, another small inside backer.
- 1:38:31SPEAKER_01: 24-yard run.
- 1:38:32SPEAKER_01: He was a step slow getting out there.
- 1:38:34SPEAKER_01: He bumped...
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_01: Jahan Dotson on a crosser, ball went incomplete.
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_01: He showed pursuit on a screen on third and 15, chased down London, gained a 12.
- 1:38:45SPEAKER_01: I think they had to punt, was a nice play.
- 1:38:49SPEAKER_01: And then Bush, he had to run stuff.
- 1:38:54SPEAKER_01: He slipped a block and he had a fumble recovery at the end.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the secondary.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_01: So Gannon makes his debut from this calf injury that really caused him
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_01: to miss almost two full seasons.
- 1:39:08SPEAKER_01: He only played 17 snaps.
- 1:39:10SPEAKER_01: The ramp up was minimal, but he had a fantastic game.
- 1:39:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've always liked Gordon.
- 1:39:18SPEAKER_01: He has played some outside, but from that slot, he's always been hell on wheels as a blitzer.
- 1:39:25SPEAKER_01: What a game.
- 1:39:27SPEAKER_01: He comes in in the second quarter on third and four.
- 1:39:31SPEAKER_01: Edge blitz beats Hooper, the tight end.
- 1:39:35SPEAKER_01: The play was for minus one.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_01: He gets a sack.
- 1:39:39SPEAKER_01: He had three sacks.
- 1:39:40SPEAKER_01: The first one in 1.9 off the slot.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_01: He was too quick for B. John Robinson.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_01: That was his man.
- 1:39:48SPEAKER_01: He gets a sack in 2.3 against tight end Charlie Warner, causes a fumble.
- 1:39:54SPEAKER_01: And he gets a sack against the tackle Taylor in 2.3, caused a fumble.
- 1:40:01SPEAKER_01: Another one,
- 1:40:02SPEAKER_01: he got a holding penalty on Bijan in the fourth quarter when it was kind
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_01: of crunch time.
- 1:40:08SPEAKER_01: So he made five big plays off the edge in 17 snaps.
- 1:40:16SPEAKER_01: He's a threat.
- 1:40:17SPEAKER_01: All right, now they're not near as good elsewhere.
- 1:40:22SPEAKER_01: Gordon can really, really help their defense.
- 1:40:25SPEAKER_01: Let's look at the guy.
- 1:40:27SPEAKER_01: Gordon, let's remember his numbers.
- 1:40:31SPEAKER_01: He is a second round pick in 22.
- 1:40:34SPEAKER_01: He's 5'11 and a half, 198, ran 4'58.
- 1:40:39SPEAKER_01: That's why people doubted that he could cover outside.
- 1:40:42SPEAKER_01: They questioned it.
- 1:40:43SPEAKER_01: He's 24 on the test.
- 1:40:45SPEAKER_01: He's strong as hell.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_01: 20 on the bench.
- 1:40:49SPEAKER_01: Short, three cones, 6'67.
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_01: Short, subtle, 3'99.
- 1:40:55SPEAKER_01: Vert, 39 and a half.
- 1:40:58SPEAKER_01: He's got big numbers.
- 1:41:00SPEAKER_01: This guy, he can dip.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_01: He's physical as hell.
- 1:41:03SPEAKER_01: He always has been.
- 1:41:04SPEAKER_01: He's a great tackler.
- 1:41:06SPEAKER_01: All right, on the outside, you got Jalen Johnson.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_01: Played pretty good.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_01: He got killed by London on a touchdown.
- 1:41:12SPEAKER_01: The ball was overthrown.
- 1:41:13SPEAKER_01: Should have been a touchdown, 47.
- 1:41:16SPEAKER_01: Holding penalty against London.
- 1:41:19SPEAKER_01: Fourth and three, broke up a sideline ball to London.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_01: Hell of a play.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_01: Two point.
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_01: He gave up a slam to London for two.
- 1:41:28SPEAKER_01: Phillips, kind of another guy that they got.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_01: I think he's an ex-Giant or Falcon.
- 1:41:34SPEAKER_01: I've liked this guy.
- 1:41:35SPEAKER_01: He's a fourth-round pick four years ago.
- 1:41:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, he comes off almost as hard as Gordon, Tyler.
- 1:41:43SPEAKER_01: He whiffed on a slot sack, but he's physical as hell.
- 1:41:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, really physical.
- 1:41:48SPEAKER_01: He and Gordon are a match pair.
- 1:41:51SPEAKER_01: He's a reckless blitzer.
- 1:41:52SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown against Bijan, knocked Bijan to the ground, right, to his knees one time.
- 1:41:59SPEAKER_01: They got two nasty edge blitzers.
- 1:42:03SPEAKER_01: And then the other corner was Muhammad.
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_01: He was okay.
- 1:42:07SPEAKER_01: He had a PI.
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_01: He gave up a touchdown.
- 1:42:10SPEAKER_01: No turn back for the ball to Dodson.
- 1:42:12SPEAKER_01: He was fine.
- 1:42:14SPEAKER_01: The safeties.
- 1:42:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, we did.
- 1:42:17SPEAKER_01: All right, now Thienemann.
- 1:42:20SPEAKER_01: Played every snap.
- 1:42:21SPEAKER_01: That defense should be good this Thursday.
- 1:42:23SPEAKER_01: They only played 46 snaps.
- 1:42:26SPEAKER_01: He missed London on that 37 yarder, gained an extra 18.
- 1:42:30SPEAKER_01: He was in zone coverage.
- 1:42:32SPEAKER_01: He got a sack and 4.6 on panics against Bijan.
- 1:42:36SPEAKER_01: Bijan's not a very good pass blocker team.
- 1:42:40SPEAKER_01: He had a fine breakup and he gave up a five yard touchdown to the tight end pits on a rub route.
- 1:42:47SPEAKER_01: The other safety was Lewis, played 37, got hurt.
- 1:42:51SPEAKER_01: Then Hicks came in for 29.
- 1:42:57SPEAKER_01: Lewis, man,
- 1:42:59SPEAKER_01: Bijan would have had that 80-yard touchdown,
- 1:43:01SPEAKER_01: but he goes in there hauling, attacking him, and made the tackle.
- 1:43:06SPEAKER_01: I think it was a gain at eight.
- 1:43:07SPEAKER_01: It was a great tackle in the hole.
- 1:43:10SPEAKER_01: And then he had an ineffectual double coverage on Dotson.
- 1:43:15SPEAKER_01: The game was I can't read my writing.
- 1:43:18SPEAKER_01: 11, I think.
- 1:43:20SPEAKER_01: Hicks made another touchdown saving tackle on Bijan.
- 1:43:23SPEAKER_01: He gave up a touchdown pass to Hicks.
- 1:43:26SPEAKER_01: And man, that's it for the D. Now the secondary.
- 1:43:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know what Ben was doing there early.
- 1:43:33SPEAKER_01: He tried Santos on a 56-yard field goal.
- 1:43:37SPEAKER_01: That led to a Falcon touchdown.
- 1:43:39SPEAKER_01: That was in the middle of the second quarter.
- 1:43:40SPEAKER_01: That was a mistake.
- 1:43:42SPEAKER_01: Santos does not have that range.
- 1:43:44SPEAKER_01: He did hit from 50.
- 1:43:47SPEAKER_01: Santos, I've been really checking these kickoff guys, Tyler.
- 1:43:50SPEAKER_01: All he does, he's just popping it straight down the middle, low and middle.
- 1:43:56SPEAKER_01: That's what he wants.
- 1:43:57SPEAKER_01: His 10 teammates know it's coming.
- 1:44:01SPEAKER_01: Direction, he doesn't even try to go outside the numbers.
- 1:44:05SPEAKER_01: And then Taylor, the punter, five punts, 44-8, 41-0, had a good day, 4-5-0.
- 1:44:13SPEAKER_01: Their coverage units...
- 1:44:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe the best I've seen this year.
- 1:44:19SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable hustle and fury.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_01: Atlanta returned six kickoffs for 20.3 and two punts.
- 1:44:30SPEAKER_01: The punts, they didn't do anything there either.
- 1:44:33SPEAKER_01: Walker and Blackwell are gunners and you got all these nasty people hustling.
- 1:44:39SPEAKER_01: That's Richard Hightower.
- 1:44:41SPEAKER_01: They're flying around.
- 1:44:43SPEAKER_01: Their return game, really good.
- 1:44:45SPEAKER_01: Raymond averaged 18.0 on three punts.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_01: The problem is the kickoff guy.
- 1:44:51SPEAKER_01: Zavian Thomas is kind of skittish back there.
- 1:44:55SPEAKER_01: Doesn't bring it in hard.
- 1:44:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's got speed, but come on.
- 1:44:59SPEAKER_01: Four returns, 21.3.
- 1:45:03SPEAKER_01: Blackwell recovered the muff punt by Zachariah Branch.
- 1:45:08SPEAKER_01: Walker had the roughing the punter penalty, mistake.
- 1:45:13SPEAKER_01: Xavier and Scott,
- 1:45:14SPEAKER_01: the running back from the Vikings, had three tackles, including a forced fumble.
- 1:45:19SPEAKER_01: And Jaude Walker got ejected for unnecessary roughness on a kickoff.
- 1:45:25SPEAKER_01: That's it for the Bears.
- 1:45:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like the Bears are closer to being that team that you saw against
- 1:45:34SPEAKER_00: the Atlanta Falcons than the one that was shellacked by the Packers at Lambeau Field
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_00: with their backup quarterback.
- 1:45:43SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 1:45:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a fair assessment, but that offensive efficiency is difficult to sustain.
- 1:45:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, Ben Johnson hasn't been shy.
- 1:45:53SPEAKER_00: Story with Dan Pompey at the Athletic.
- 1:45:56SPEAKER_00: Blowouts and shutouts.
- 1:45:58SPEAKER_00: Trying to speak it into existence here.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're a different team with their starting quarterback.
- 1:46:06SPEAKER_00: And Ben Johnson pushing the buttons.
- 1:46:09SPEAKER_00: Like Green Bay, they're kind of working into the teeth of their schedule now.
- 1:46:13SPEAKER_00: Got the defending AFC champs.
- 1:46:15SPEAKER_00: Drake Mays been heating up.
- 1:46:17SPEAKER_00: Granted, they've got injuries out there in New England.
- 1:46:21SPEAKER_00: But their quarterback kind of getting this confidence back.
- 1:46:24SPEAKER_00: They're feeling good about themselves.
- 1:46:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:46:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know, big, big picture?
- 1:46:28SPEAKER_00: Any thoughts on where the Bears are?
- 1:46:29SPEAKER_00: Nothing to happen to this thing?
- 1:46:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, we love their offensive line, no doubt, as long as Jonah Jackson isn't out with his hip.
- 1:46:38SPEAKER_01: That's a major one, man, if that happens.
- 1:46:41SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:46:42SPEAKER_01: You love their offense.
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_01: Monunga hasn't played a couple games.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_01: We know how good he is.
- 1:46:47SPEAKER_01: He makes Swift better.
- 1:46:48SPEAKER_01: He's a hell of a lot better than Roshon Johnson.
- 1:46:51SPEAKER_01: Defense, all right, they get Sweat back, but is Sweat really that good?
- 1:46:56SPEAKER_01: Is he a premier guy?
- 1:46:57SPEAKER_01: No, he hasn't been there for a couple of years.
- 1:47:01SPEAKER_01: Do they have enough?
- 1:47:02SPEAKER_01: Are they big enough inside to start stopping the run against good teams in cold weather?
- 1:47:08SPEAKER_01: I don't think so.
- 1:47:09SPEAKER_01: They have a really good D coordinator in Dennis Allen,
- 1:47:14SPEAKER_01: but edge rushers,
- 1:47:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know how long Oding Ding Bale's gone, but he was having a good year.
- 1:47:20SPEAKER_01: That's a blow.
- 1:47:21SPEAKER_01: He's on IR.
- 1:47:23SPEAKER_01: Their secondary has played pretty well.
- 1:47:27SPEAKER_01: Gordon helps them.
- 1:47:28SPEAKER_01: This Phillips guy helps them.
- 1:47:30SPEAKER_01: They traded for Phillips, right?
- 1:47:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, with Atlanta.
- 1:47:35SPEAKER_01: Their inside backers, I assume TJ Edwards will be back pretty quick.
- 1:47:40SPEAKER_01: Bush has kind of grown on me.
- 1:47:43SPEAKER_01: And their special teams are real good.
- 1:47:46SPEAKER_01: Boy, that coverage.
- 1:47:47SPEAKER_01: And Khalifa Raymond helps them.
- 1:47:50SPEAKER_01: This is a hell of a division.
- 1:47:52SPEAKER_01: It's hard to handicap, isn't it?
- 1:47:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:47:56SPEAKER_01: I could see all four of them winning it.
- 1:47:59SPEAKER_00: We said it before week one.
- 1:48:02SPEAKER_00: Any team could finish first.
- 1:48:04SPEAKER_00: Any team could finish last.
- 1:48:07SPEAKER_00: Late October, I still feel the same way.
- 1:48:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, I agree all the way.
- 1:48:13SPEAKER_00: All right, let's get to your McGinn memory and wrap this episode up.
- 1:48:16SPEAKER_00: What you got for us?
- 1:48:18SPEAKER_01: All right,
- 1:48:19SPEAKER_01: so people,
- 1:48:21SPEAKER_01: I'll tell them we're going to talk about the media so they can turn off right here
- 1:48:26SPEAKER_01: if they don't want to hear it, all right?
- 1:48:29SPEAKER_01: So the PAC's going back to Detroit and immediately gets me thinking about
- 1:48:35SPEAKER_01: the Detroit Media Corps.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_01: And it was interesting because during most of my time,
- 1:48:43SPEAKER_01: The News, the Free Press, and MLive slash Oakland Press had the same beat writers.
- 1:48:51SPEAKER_01: All three of them.
- 1:48:52SPEAKER_01: Kurt Sylvester of the Free Press,
- 1:48:54SPEAKER_01: Mike O'Hara of the News, and Tom Killer Kowalski of MLive slash Oakland Press.
- 1:49:03SPEAKER_01: That got them over to Ann Arbor, Flint.
- 1:49:05SPEAKER_01: All those papers became one 30 years ago.
- 1:49:09SPEAKER_01: Something like that.
- 1:49:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:49:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:49:12SPEAKER_01: And you know,
- 1:49:14SPEAKER_01: back before the internet,
- 1:49:15SPEAKER_01: Tyler, you would generally pick a guy in each city that you knew or got to know.
- 1:49:20SPEAKER_01: And when something would happen,
- 1:49:22SPEAKER_01: trade talk or something about the draft,
- 1:49:25SPEAKER_01: and I'd want to talk to somebody from that city, you'd just talk to one guy.
- 1:49:30SPEAKER_01: But in this case, I happened to be friends just by happenstance with all three of these guys.
- 1:49:36SPEAKER_01: Kurt Sylvester was there 27 years on the lion beat.
- 1:49:40SPEAKER_01: From 78 to 04, he wrote the most punchy, clever leads without ever being hokey.
- 1:49:51SPEAKER_01: A beat writer that I've ever been around.
- 1:49:52SPEAKER_01: He covered Michigan when I was a student.
- 1:49:55SPEAKER_01: We were in awe of this guy.
- 1:49:57SPEAKER_01: I had lunch with him about in May with longtime,
- 1:50:04SPEAKER_01: the best high school writer in history, Mick McCabe.
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_01: We had lunch over in Ypsilanti.
- 1:50:09SPEAKER_01: Kurt's a great guy.
- 1:50:11SPEAKER_01: And he retired in 05.
- 1:50:12SPEAKER_01: He retired young to play baseball.
- 1:50:15SPEAKER_01: He plays competitive baseball until he was about 80 years old, 70 years old.
- 1:50:20SPEAKER_01: He's unreal.
- 1:50:21SPEAKER_01: He quit last year.
- 1:50:23SPEAKER_01: Mike O'Hara, he covered the team for the Detroit News for 35 years.
- 1:50:28SPEAKER_01: Then he went to lions.com and did another 12.
- 1:50:31SPEAKER_01: He retired in 2024.
- 1:50:35SPEAKER_01: Mike O'Hara, he broke a hell of a lot of stories on that beat.
- 1:50:40SPEAKER_01: He was really plugged in.
- 1:50:42SPEAKER_01: And Killer Kowalski.
- 1:50:44SPEAKER_01: He got on the beat in 78.
- 1:50:46SPEAKER_01: He was going strong at age 51, and he died of heart condition suddenly in 2011.
- 1:50:55SPEAKER_01: So he put in about 32 years on the beat.
- 1:51:00SPEAKER_01: Very good friends with all of them.
- 1:51:02SPEAKER_01: I saw one game myself,
- 1:51:04SPEAKER_01: football game at Tiger Stadium,
- 1:51:06SPEAKER_01: and then the Silverdome from 75 to 01, and then Ford Field from 02 to 16.
- 1:51:13SPEAKER_01: I liked all the venues, but the guy I want to talk mainly about here is Jerry Green.
- 1:51:19SPEAKER_01: Jerry Green really changed the way I thought about football coverage.
- 1:51:27SPEAKER_01: Now he's the only reporter to cover the first 56 Super Bowls.
- 1:51:32SPEAKER_01: He worked for the Detroit News.
- 1:51:35SPEAKER_01: He's semi-retired.
- 1:51:37SPEAKER_01: 67 years as a newspaper writer, all for the Detroit News.
- 1:51:42SPEAKER_01: I think the first five are with Associated Press.
- 1:51:46SPEAKER_01: His streak ended on the Super Bowls in 22,
- 1:51:49SPEAKER_01: and then he died nine months, about a year later at age 94.
- 1:51:55SPEAKER_01: We had lunch about a year before he passed, and...
- 1:51:59SPEAKER_01: I loved about him.
- 1:52:01SPEAKER_01: He still was competitive with the free press.
- 1:52:04SPEAKER_01: He still talked about his rivalry with the great Joel Falls, the free press columnist.
- 1:52:09SPEAKER_01: Jerry was a beat writer, but then he was a columnist.
- 1:52:13SPEAKER_01: And they didn't like each other.
- 1:52:14SPEAKER_01: He didn't like the free press.
- 1:52:16SPEAKER_01: And even at 93, he was still talking about competitive.
- 1:52:20SPEAKER_01: His juices flowed that day in the restaurant.
- 1:52:23SPEAKER_01: It was awesome.
- 1:52:24SPEAKER_01: That's kind of the way I was, you know?
- 1:52:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:52:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:52:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I love my Press Gazette,
- 1:52:29SPEAKER_01: and then I love my Journal Sentinel, and you know that's the way I was, man.
- 1:52:33SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:52:36SPEAKER_01: He semi-retired from the news in 04, but he kept writing columns.
- 1:52:40SPEAKER_01: And when I moved over here nine years ago, every two weeks, he'd write a big column in the news.
- 1:52:47SPEAKER_01: He could just make it sing.
- 1:52:49SPEAKER_01: He's a wonderful writer.
- 1:52:51SPEAKER_01: So anyway, I'm growing up in Escanaba, and...
- 1:52:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, Jerry Green, by the way, was born in Manhattan in 1928.
- 1:53:00SPEAKER_01: He's an Easterner.
- 1:53:02SPEAKER_01: Went to Brown University, served in the U.S. Navy in the early 50s, then came to AP Detroit.
- 1:53:10SPEAKER_01: He learned football after Benny Oosterbaum, the Michigan coach in the mid-50s.
- 1:53:16SPEAKER_01: After Jerry told me Benny would get the team together,
- 1:53:20SPEAKER_01: get practice going,
- 1:53:22SPEAKER_01: then he'd come over and sit on a blocking dummy with Jerry,
- 1:53:26SPEAKER_01: And explain football to Jerry.
- 1:53:28SPEAKER_01: This is the head coach of Michigan Wolverines in 54, 55.
- 1:53:33SPEAKER_01: And that's how Jerry really learned ball from Benny.
- 1:53:37SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:53:38SPEAKER_01: That's what he tells me.
- 1:53:39SPEAKER_01: So at age nine,
- 1:53:42SPEAKER_01: I got introduced to APBA,
- 1:53:45SPEAKER_01: the sports table game, which was based on, you're familiar with APBA, Tyler?
- 1:53:52SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 1:53:55SPEAKER_01: It came Lancaster,
- 1:53:56SPEAKER_01: Pennsylvania,
- 1:53:58SPEAKER_01: and it was based,
- 1:53:59SPEAKER_01: if you played the game realistically,
- 1:54:01SPEAKER_01: there were playing cards and it was all numerical formula based,
- 1:54:06SPEAKER_01: that if you played a full schedule in the NFL,
- 1:54:08SPEAKER_01: these teams would perform theoretically almost exactly the way they did in real life
- 1:54:14SPEAKER_01: and everybody would perform the same.
- 1:54:16SPEAKER_01: So I started in on this 9,
- 1:54:18SPEAKER_01: 10, 11, a guy by the name of Tom Anzalone, a friend of mine in Escanaba.
- 1:54:22SPEAKER_01: He introduced me to it.
- 1:54:24SPEAKER_00: And so this is where I started
- 1:54:27SPEAKER_01: thinking about left tackles and right tackles
- 1:54:29SPEAKER_01: and linebackers and if they could run.
- 1:54:31SPEAKER_01: I'm 9, 10, 11, and I'm playing this game with him.
- 1:54:35SPEAKER_01: So I got into Jerry Green by buying the Detroit News,
- 1:54:40SPEAKER_01: his paper at Gust Asp, Which is still there in downtown Escanaba.
- 1:54:45SPEAKER_01: Just ask, just ask.
- 1:54:48SPEAKER_01: And I would, this coverage from Jerry was so, it was like Tex Mall of Sports Illustrated.
- 1:54:54SPEAKER_01: Who was the first great analytical pro football writer.
- 1:54:58SPEAKER_01: Well, Jerry was kind of right there with him, but in a regional, you know, environment.
- 1:55:04SPEAKER_01: And he would be covering Joe Schmidt's Lions.
- 1:55:07SPEAKER_01: And he would be telling me all this stuff in the mid 60s.
- 1:55:11SPEAKER_01: And I'm playing this sports table game.
- 1:55:14SPEAKER_01: And then it got me going.
- 1:55:15SPEAKER_01: And the Milwaukee Journal would come to our house every Sunday morning.
- 1:55:20SPEAKER_01: And they would have the rosters of the Packers opponent that day.
- 1:55:24SPEAKER_01: So there was only like 36-man rosters.
- 1:55:27SPEAKER_01: And I'd cut up these two-inch white squares,
- 1:55:31SPEAKER_01: one square per player,
- 1:55:32SPEAKER_01: and then line them up in front on the green carpet in front of this console TV.
- 1:55:37SPEAKER_01: Me and my mom are watching the game.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_01: And when subs had come in,
- 1:55:40SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:55:41SPEAKER_01: I'd get Forrest Gregg out of there, get more masters in there, right tackle.
- 1:55:46SPEAKER_01: And it was all, you know, that offense against the opposing defense.
- 1:55:50SPEAKER_01: So anyway,
- 1:55:51SPEAKER_01: I told Jerry Green several times how much he meant to,
- 1:55:55SPEAKER_01: you know, the course I went to.
- 1:55:58SPEAKER_01: And he was really something.
- 1:56:01SPEAKER_01: He covered the line beat from 65 to 72.
- 1:56:04SPEAKER_01: Those are my formative years.
- 1:56:06SPEAKER_01: Then he became a columnist.
- 1:56:08SPEAKER_01: And he was something else.
- 1:56:10SPEAKER_01: He also wrote for Street and Smith's football annual in Dell in addition to the news.
- 1:56:16SPEAKER_01: He was competitive, an absolute total wordsmith, one of the greats in pro football reporting.
- 1:56:26SPEAKER_00: And infectious smile too, Bob, just looking him up here.
- 1:56:31SPEAKER_00: You could probably picture it.
- 1:56:33SPEAKER_00: You can see it.
- 1:56:35SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at his obituary here.
- 1:56:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, here he is at a Super Bowl.
- 1:56:40SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 1:56:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:56:42SPEAKER_01: He's a great man.
- 1:56:43SPEAKER_01: Everybody in the pro football writing world knows him.
- 1:56:47SPEAKER_01: He was at 56 consecutive Super Bowls, Diarco.
- 1:56:51SPEAKER_00: I love the competitiveness, too.
- 1:56:53SPEAKER_00: It's somewhat of a lost art on beats.
- 1:56:58SPEAKER_00: I'm parachuting into different markets, and you can compare this market to that market.
- 1:57:03SPEAKER_00: There's definitely some vibrant beats where you can sense a healthy tension, as there should be.
- 1:57:10SPEAKER_00: Then there's some places where it's just an amoeba kind of moving together in
- 1:57:14SPEAKER_00: the locker room, and everybody's just sharing the same quotes.
- 1:57:18SPEAKER_00: Some of them even get back to the media auditorium.
- 1:57:21SPEAKER_00: Hey, let's all transcribe this together and just help each other out.
- 1:57:25SPEAKER_00: Screw that.
- 1:57:28SPEAKER_00: You should want to beat your competition in submission.
- 1:57:35SPEAKER_00: You should be fighting for original stories.
- 1:57:37SPEAKER_00: What are we doing here?
- 1:57:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can be friends.
- 1:57:41SPEAKER_00: And I learned this all from you and Tom,
- 1:57:43SPEAKER_00: obviously, in terms of that competitiveness and trying to find a fresh angle.
- 1:57:47SPEAKER_00: But also, I like to consider myself a friendly guy.
- 1:57:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was close with Kareem Copeland.
- 1:57:55SPEAKER_00: Remember his Press Gazette days?
- 1:57:59SPEAKER_00: We'd hang out all the time.
- 1:58:01SPEAKER_00: We just never talked about work.
- 1:58:03SPEAKER_00: When it came over to the work, we'd want to beat each other every day for better stories.
- 1:58:09SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying you have to hate the person next to you on the sideline at
- 1:58:13SPEAKER_00: a training camp practice, but I don't know.
- 1:58:14SPEAKER_00: I just feel like What you learned from Jerry, and I love that.
- 1:58:19SPEAKER_00: To the very end, he just wanted to destroy the competition.
- 1:58:25SPEAKER_00: It's awesome.
- 1:58:26SPEAKER_00: There should be more of that.
- 1:58:27SPEAKER_00: Not this monolithic, insipid, bland, let's just all engage in group interviews.
- 1:58:37SPEAKER_00: Because that's what the teams want, right?
- 1:58:41SPEAKER_00: The teams would prefer that.
- 1:58:42SPEAKER_00: They want to control the message, you know?
- 1:58:46SPEAKER_00: That's why we prefer to sit down with players over a nice meal for an hour and
- 1:58:51SPEAKER_00: a half and learn something a little original.
- 1:58:55SPEAKER_00: Anyways, Jerry, I got to read some of his stories and read up on him.
- 1:58:59SPEAKER_00: I feel ashamed.
- 1:59:00SPEAKER_00: I don't know a hell of a lot about Jerry.
- 1:59:02SPEAKER_00: So thanks so much for laying that out, Bob.
- 1:59:04SPEAKER_00: That was great.
- 1:59:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, good.
- 1:59:07SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 1:59:07SPEAKER_00: Well, hey, thank you so much, everyone, for watching, listening, supporting.
- 1:59:11SPEAKER_00: Again, you didn't hear one ad.
- 1:59:14SPEAKER_00: One sponsor, any of that on this episode.
- 1:59:17SPEAKER_00: You won't on any of the episodes.
- 1:59:19SPEAKER_00: And it's all because of you subscribing.
- 1:59:21SPEAKER_00: So thank you for sharing the good word.
