- 2:25Speaker 5: to town. Local legend, crowd favorite fan favorite, state favorite
- 2:31Speaker 5: Nas read on his way out to North Carolina. Mad
- 2:34Speaker 5: respects for Nas, but hey, nobody's untradable. I guess so
- 2:41Speaker 5: I reached out last week before all this started popping off.
- 2:44Speaker 5: And by the way, thank you for listening to the
- 2:45Speaker 5: Sports Done Right Podcast. I am Vince Right, the Sports
- 2:48Speaker 5: Governor of Minnesota, coming to you from the Situation room.
- 2:52Speaker 5: And we got Channel nine, Fox nine here in the
- 2:56Speaker 5: Twin City, Twin Cities. Excuse me, we have Pierre Neusham
- 3:03Speaker 5: joining us, and we're gonna get into it all. That's
- 3:06Speaker 5: why I'm not talking about anything.
- 3:07Speaker 1: You're good.
- 3:08Speaker 5: You're gonna hear it here in a few seconds. Pierre
- 3:11Speaker 5: is a great dude. He has been on the show before,
- 3:15Speaker 5: so this is a second go around on the Sports
- 3:17Speaker 5: Done Right Podcast. When I'm out there, you know, at events,
- 3:21Speaker 5: Gopher games, things like that that I've had access to.
- 3:24Speaker 5: He is one of the coolest guys. Nicest guys, always
- 3:27Speaker 5: has time to, you know, answer some questions and things
- 3:31Speaker 5: like that. So shout out to you, by the way,
- 3:34Speaker 5: not only a new husband, but soon to be new
- 3:36Speaker 5: father Pierre Nusham as well. So let's just get right
- 3:40Speaker 5: to it, folks. We got about thirty four minutes of
- 3:44Speaker 5: this wonderful interview and we're gonna get into it all. Gophers, Vikings,
- 3:49Speaker 5: and of course the Timberwolves. So here we go, all right, everybody,
- 3:56Speaker 5: Events Right, Sports Done Right Podcast, and we are with
- 4:00Speaker 5: a returning member of the local sports scene, mister Pierre
- 4:04Speaker 5: Nusiam joining us from Fox nine, one of our favorites,
- 4:07Speaker 5: and we're gonna get into it all because obviously we
- 4:10Speaker 5: got you see me depped out into Wolves gear. Here
- 4:13Speaker 5: I'm gonna be talking Wolves obviously, but we're gonna touch
- 4:16Speaker 5: on Vikings. But one thing that I wanted to start
- 4:19Speaker 5: the interview with Pierre and ask him this question, and
- 4:23Speaker 5: we've talked a little bit off air about it, but
- 4:25Speaker 5: you know, I have people coming to me and they
- 4:28Speaker 5: asked me about the Minnesota sports scene and they're actually
- 4:31Speaker 5: pretty surprised by what's available here, Pierre. So you know,
- 4:34Speaker 5: from a media standpoint, you know, if you get that
- 4:37Speaker 5: question from other media members, how do you describe the
- 4:41Speaker 5: Twin City sports scene or the Minnesota sports scene to people?
- 4:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I one thing I would tell them is we
- 4:48Speaker 6: have absolutely everything here. Everything you can imagine. We have
- 4:52Speaker 6: all four of the major sports, plus Major League Soccer,
- 4:55Speaker 6: plus the WNBA, plus the PWHL. And then you have
- 5:00Speaker 6: two big Division one universities in the University of Minnesota,
- 5:04Speaker 6: and of course Saint Thomas isn't as big right now,
- 5:06Speaker 6: but they're gonna be on their way, you know. Yeah,
- 5:08Speaker 6: ran a D one status not long ago, so you
- 5:12Speaker 6: have that. Plus you have an active prep scene and
- 5:15Speaker 6: between basketball and football, of course, but I think one
- 5:17Speaker 6: thing that makes Minnesota unique obviously is the hockey, and
- 5:20Speaker 6: we have prep hockey and there's a lot of interest
- 5:23Speaker 6: in prep hockey around here. There's a lot of guys
- 5:25Speaker 6: who go on to play Major Division one and are
- 5:28Speaker 6: looked at his NHL prospects. So that we have absolutely
- 5:31Speaker 6: everything here in the Twin Cities, absolutely everything to offer
- 5:35Speaker 6: in terms of sports.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you know, MLS, no, absolutely national women's
- 5:41Speaker 5: sports up and down to dial is Well.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I mean I love it.
- 5:44Speaker 5: You know, from a sports fan perspective, you really can't
- 5:48Speaker 5: beat this area. Pierre, let me ask you this as
- 5:51Speaker 5: we kind of get into the nuts and bolts here,
- 5:53Speaker 5: we got the big trade that went down yesterday, right
- 5:57Speaker 5: and you know, local Jen naz Reid out of here
- 6:03Speaker 5: for you know, LaMelo. But you know, to have twenty
- 6:08Speaker 5: four hours to think about it now, because at first,
- 6:10Speaker 5: you know, you're all over Twitter you see it too.
- 6:12Speaker 5: You know, everybody's just bummed that nas is out of here.
- 6:15Speaker 5: But now that you've had some time to think about it,
- 6:17Speaker 5: kind of process it a little bit. What are your
- 6:19Speaker 5: thoughts or initial thoughts on the big trade?
- 6:24Speaker 6: Well, I think anytime you see a trade happen in
- 6:26Speaker 6: the NBA, the first question, at least for me, I ask,
- 6:29Speaker 6: is who's the best player in the deal, and I think,
- 6:32Speaker 6: without question, lamel and Ball is the best player in
- 6:35Speaker 6: the deal. So the Wolves, in my opinion, are getting
- 6:37Speaker 6: the best player in the deal. Now, they had to
- 6:39Speaker 6: give up a lot to get him. I certainly understand it.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Tim Connelly is a man who doesn't really seem to
- 6:46Speaker 6: care all that much about his draft picks, and he's
- 6:49Speaker 6: very much win now mode, and that's I don't have
- 6:51Speaker 6: a problem with that. When the regular I'm sorry, when
- 6:55Speaker 6: the postseason ended, I was on record I said, outside
- 6:59Speaker 6: of trading Anthony Edwards, everything should be on the table. Absolutely,
- 7:03Speaker 6: everything should be on the table. And even though Jaden
- 7:07Speaker 6: McDaniels is as close to untouchable as it gets outside
- 7:10Speaker 6: of Anthony Edwards, to me, if somebody came to me
- 7:14Speaker 6: and proposed a trade that involved Jaden McDaniels, I would
- 7:17Speaker 6: absolutely listen. Oh it doesn't mean I would trade him,
- 7:21Speaker 6: but I would absolutely be listening. Because you can't go
- 7:24Speaker 6: to the Western Conference Finals two years in a row
- 7:26Speaker 6: and then take a step back this year and have
- 7:30Speaker 6: a second round playoff exit and think to yourself, we're
- 7:32Speaker 6: only one piece away, or if we stand pat for
- 7:36Speaker 6: the most part, we can run it back and probably
- 7:39Speaker 6: be fine if everything breaks right for us healthwise. There
- 7:43Speaker 6: was no way possible for me to sit here and
- 7:45Speaker 6: think that you could have that mentality, So you have
- 7:48Speaker 6: to do something drastic. Now, Is it enough to keep
- 7:52Speaker 6: up with the Oklahoma Cities and the San Antonio's in
- 7:55Speaker 6: the Western Conference? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
- 7:58Speaker 6: But I do think that this is a move that
- 8:01Speaker 6: makes Minnesota a lot more intriguing. The pairing of LaMelo
- 8:05Speaker 6: Ball and Anthony Edwards makes up for one of the
- 8:07Speaker 6: more dynamic backcourts in the game. I'm a little curious
- 8:11Speaker 6: to know what Io Desumu's thinking right now, because he
- 8:14Speaker 6: reportedly agreed to a five year, one hundred and twelve
- 8:16Speaker 6: million dollar extension. And if I was Io Desumo, I
- 8:19Speaker 6: might be thinking. With Dante DiVincenzo about to miss all
- 8:23Speaker 6: most of, if not all, of next season, wouldn't I
- 8:26Speaker 6: be the starting point guard? And now maybe Io Desumu's
- 8:29Speaker 6: not the starting point guard. Perhaps I don't know what
- 8:31Speaker 6: their starting five is gonna look like now. We still
- 8:33Speaker 6: don't know because the team isn't fully built just yet.
- 8:37Speaker 6: So it's a very intriguing team. It's a move that
- 8:41Speaker 6: I'm a fan of and I think even though nas
- 8:44Speaker 6: Reed is a beloved member of not just this team,
- 8:47Speaker 6: but this community. It's it's a move that I can
- 8:51Speaker 6: certainly understand why Tim Connolly made the move. I can
- 8:54Speaker 6: certainly understand it. We're gonna miss nas Reid, There's no
- 8:56Speaker 6: question about it. It's tough when you get personally attached
- 9:00Speaker 6: to some of these guys. Yeah, but it's the business.
- 9:03Speaker 6: And anybody who's been in the business long enough knows
- 9:06Speaker 6: this is the business and these things can happen. And
- 9:09Speaker 6: we're in the business of winning. And if we feel
- 9:12Speaker 6: that this is a move that can help us win
- 9:15Speaker 6: more than last year, you should be doing it.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Hey man, Michael Jordan Woulder playing for the Wizards. Wayne
- 9:21Speaker 5: Gretzky got traded for Edmonton, right, every anything's possible, man,
- 9:27Speaker 5: So again, talking with the news here from Fox nine.
- 9:31Speaker 5: The one thing I kind of like about it is
- 9:34Speaker 5: maybe ant Man doesn't get double teamed as much. Now, Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 5: you know, I mean that's one thing I noticed a
- 9:40Speaker 5: lot last season, a lot of teams able to get
- 9:42Speaker 5: double teams. He's able to kick the ball away. But
- 9:44Speaker 5: to who Now you got LaMelo in their former rookie
- 9:48Speaker 5: of the year. Hey man, we got some options. So
- 9:51Speaker 5: I'm you know, like you said, team isn't built yet.
- 9:54Speaker 5: We got to see how obviously the chemistry attitudes, like
- 9:59Speaker 5: you say, you know, Io, he might have thought he
- 10:02Speaker 5: was gonna be the number two guy here all of
- 10:04Speaker 5: a sudden. So yeah, I'm very interested to see how
- 10:07Speaker 5: it plays out. Let me ask you this news, anything
- 10:11Speaker 5: else happening with the Wolves that you've heard. I mean,
- 10:13Speaker 5: you know, obviously this is a huge trade, but you
- 10:17Speaker 5: know there's still some other moves possibly to be made
- 10:20Speaker 5: with this team.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I think they're gonna be looking around right now
- 10:23Speaker 6: because you have to ask yourself the question, what exactly
- 10:26Speaker 6: is the starting lineup right now? And I don't outside
- 10:29Speaker 6: of Aunt, Jaden and Rudy, I'm assuming LaMelo ball is
- 10:33Speaker 6: going to start at point guard. I think I think
- 10:34Speaker 6: that's probably to assume. So who's your starting four right now?
- 10:40Speaker 6: Do you start a small lineup of LaMelo, Io Aunt
- 10:46Speaker 6: and have Jayden play the four? I don't think that's
- 10:49Speaker 6: probably what they're thinking. Probably not so to me. I
- 10:54Speaker 6: still don't think there's enough shooting on this team right now.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Right now as constructor, LaMelo can shoot the ball there's
- 11:01Speaker 6: no question about it. But is he enough of a
- 11:05Speaker 6: distraction for opposing defenses to lay off of Anthony Edwards
- 11:08Speaker 6: like you said, and to not want to go at
- 11:11Speaker 6: him and double team Anthony Edwards. Is everybody going to
- 11:13Speaker 6: think to themselves, we're going to make LaMelo Ball beat
- 11:16Speaker 6: us by shooting threes. I still think there needs to
- 11:19Speaker 6: be another shooter on the floor with this group. Jade McDaniels,
- 11:24Speaker 6: as great as he was in that first round series
- 11:27Speaker 6: against Denver, I mean, he was spectacular in that opening
- 11:31Speaker 6: round series, I don't know what the next level is
- 11:36Speaker 6: for him in terms of being a scorer in this Say,
- 11:39Speaker 6: can we rely on Jade McDaniels to be an eighteen, nineteen,
- 11:42Speaker 6: even twenty points scorer in this league? I don't know
- 11:46Speaker 6: if I'm ready to be fully on board with that notion.
- 11:50Speaker 6: I don't know he could, and that would be awesome.
- 11:53Speaker 6: I would be more than happy to see it. But
- 11:57Speaker 6: I don't know if I'm ready to go there just yet.
- 11:59Speaker 6: And that's why I'm starting to think, where's the other
- 12:02Speaker 6: scoring contribution going to be coming from? Are you going
- 12:04Speaker 6: to be looking at, you know, a stretch for to
- 12:07Speaker 6: come in and start Are you going to be looking
- 12:10Speaker 6: for another perimeter shooter and maybe you plug them in
- 12:13Speaker 6: the lineup, and maybe Jayden does play a little bit
- 12:16Speaker 6: of a point forward role of for not a point forward,
- 12:21Speaker 6: but it's yeah, there's there's a lot of questions still
- 12:24Speaker 6: left on this roster and we're far from done from
- 12:27Speaker 6: seeing it be complete.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Do you think Tim Connelly thinks that this team hit
- 12:32Speaker 1: its ceiling, so to speak.
- 12:38Speaker 6: I don't know if I think there's got to be
- 12:41Speaker 6: some version of that thought in his mind, because if
- 12:45Speaker 6: he didn't, you know, then Julius Randam might still be
- 12:47Speaker 6: on this team, right. So, so I think that with
- 12:52Speaker 6: the way they looked offensively at times, a lot of
- 12:55Speaker 6: it was bogged down. I remember in the first year
- 12:57Speaker 6: of Julius, you know, he came in here so late.
- 12:59Speaker 6: Did they have to adjust on the fly with him
- 13:02Speaker 6: being a part of the team right before training camp started,
- 13:05Speaker 6: so there wasn't a lot of time to build chemistry
- 13:08Speaker 6: with him, and you know, there there was Chris Finch
- 13:12Speaker 6: would talk sometimes after games about the offense looking like
- 13:16Speaker 6: your turn, my turn, kind of a thing with Anthony
- 13:18Speaker 6: Edwards and Julius Randall. So I think they reached a
- 13:22Speaker 6: point to where the offense wasn't as much of in
- 13:24Speaker 6: a flow and a rhythm with Julius in there. Even
- 13:28Speaker 6: though Julius I thought was playing some great basketball this year,
- 13:33Speaker 6: I mean last year in the playoffs he was great.
- 13:35Speaker 6: The first what twenty five thirty games this season, he
- 13:38Speaker 6: was at an all star pace in my opinion.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Well, you know, yeah, that's a great point.
- 13:42Speaker 5: And also, you know, because we were talking earlier about
- 13:45Speaker 5: nas and how he you know, embedded himself in the
- 13:47Speaker 5: community and with the fans and everything, Julius Randall was
- 13:51Speaker 5: kind of like on his way to that. You know,
- 13:53Speaker 5: everybody's on social media. He's out there with his kid
- 13:56Speaker 5: on the court all the time, and everybody loved that.
- 13:59Speaker 5: And then it all just kind of went south all
- 14:01Speaker 5: of a sudden. And yeah, I mean, obviously he's gone,
- 14:03Speaker 5: but yeah, I just thought that was very interesting how
- 14:06Speaker 5: kind of quick it switched up on him here.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Yeah, it did. And I and I saw a lot
- 14:10Speaker 6: of the things. And to be perfectly honest with you,
- 14:12Speaker 6: you know, I'm I don't shy away from criticizing athletes
- 14:16Speaker 6: or coaches. That it's part of the job. I don't
- 14:18Speaker 6: shy away from it. But I didn't love what I
- 14:21Speaker 6: saw online about Julius Randall. I know he didn't play
- 14:24Speaker 6: his best basketball against San Antonio, and and really you
- 14:29Speaker 6: know he was he was even so so against Denver.
- 14:31Speaker 6: But I didn't love what I saw in terms of
- 14:33Speaker 6: him becoming a lightning rod for the fans. I thought
- 14:36Speaker 6: that was unfair to him. But you know, the team
- 14:40Speaker 6: even alluded to at times of there being a moodiness
- 14:44Speaker 6: about this group, and I think that, you know, if
- 14:47Speaker 6: you read the tea leaves, I think he was a
- 14:49Speaker 6: big part of that. So yeah, I didn't love the
- 14:54Speaker 6: fact that he got so much flak from the fans.
- 14:57Speaker 6: I don't I don't think he was fully deserving of that.
- 14:58Speaker 6: But at the same time, too, when you don't produce,
- 15:00Speaker 6: especially in the postseason, you're gonna leave yourself open for criticism.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Whether you think that's right or whether you think that's wrong.
- 15:05Speaker 6: That's part of the gig. So you know, we wish
- 15:08Speaker 6: him all the best on his way to Brooklyn. I
- 15:10Speaker 6: certainly am not in the camp of, you know, good riddance.
- 15:14Speaker 6: I definitely do not feel that way at all about
- 15:16Speaker 6: Julius Randall. I thought he played good basketball. He was here.
- 15:19Speaker 6: I thought you know, he was great with us US
- 15:21Speaker 6: media folk. I have nothing bad to say about Julius
- 15:24Speaker 6: Randall at all.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Well, there you go.
- 15:26Speaker 5: All right, So last question for the Wolves here and
- 15:28Speaker 5: then we're going to get into the Vikings and their
- 15:30Speaker 5: off season training camp coming up next month. But for
- 15:34Speaker 5: the Wolves, what does a successful season look like next year?
- 15:40Speaker 3: Is it? You know?
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean obviously we say, hey, get into the NBA Championship.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Yeah right, maybe realistically just with what we know now obviously,
- 15:50Speaker 5: just have some fun with the news.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, what what what does the successful season look like
- 15:55Speaker 1: for the Wolves next year?
- 15:56Speaker 6: To me at minimum or return trips to the Western
- 15:59Speaker 6: Conference Final at minimum? You know? And that's again it's
- 16:05Speaker 6: hard not to And I got into it a little
- 16:07Speaker 6: bit with some people online about this, and I know
- 16:09Speaker 6: you don't construct a team to specifically beat one or
- 16:12Speaker 6: two teams, but with the way San Antonio and Oklahoma
- 16:16Speaker 6: City are constructed right now, at some point in the postseason,
- 16:19Speaker 6: no matter the round, you are very likely going to
- 16:22Speaker 6: have to go through one of them, if not both
- 16:24Speaker 6: of them, to get to the NBA Finals because those
- 16:27Speaker 6: two teams are built for the next five, six, seven, eight, nine,
- 16:30Speaker 6: possibly even ten years so they're not going away, So
- 16:35Speaker 6: you have to find a way to get past, like
- 16:37Speaker 6: I said, one of if not both of them. And
- 16:42Speaker 6: if you get back to the Western Conference Finals, I'm
- 16:44Speaker 6: probably led to believe that you already went through one
- 16:48Speaker 6: of them. It's it's likely depending on injuries, of course,
- 16:51Speaker 6: and you know, Denver perhaps could re emerge as a
- 16:54Speaker 6: power again. But I think right now Minnesota has to
- 17:00Speaker 6: think to themselves at minimum a return trip to the
- 17:04Speaker 6: Western Conference Finals to call it a if you want
- 17:07Speaker 6: to call it a successful season. To me, in the
- 17:09Speaker 6: world of pro sports, there's only one way to measure success,
- 17:12Speaker 6: and that's championships. I know a lot of people might
- 17:14Speaker 6: think otherwise, I don't. This is pro sports. There's only
- 17:17Speaker 6: one successful team every year in every league. Everything other
- 17:20Speaker 6: than that is a failure to me at that point.
- 17:22Speaker 6: But yeah, obviously you want to see Minnesota get to
- 17:26Speaker 6: hoisting that Larry O'Brian trophy at some point. But I
- 17:28Speaker 6: think at bare minimum, when you make a move like
- 17:30Speaker 6: this to get LaMelo ball, you have to make the
- 17:32Speaker 6: Western Conference Finals at minimum to say to yourself the
- 17:35Speaker 6: move was worth it.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Well said here in Nusium, Fox nine here locally and
- 17:41Speaker 5: I couldn't agree more man. I mean, you know, and
- 17:44Speaker 5: that's why I like Tim Connolly. And you know, he's
- 17:47Speaker 5: pulling the trigger, he's making the moves. Obviously, we got
- 17:50Speaker 5: to see if everything, you know, works out, but he's
- 17:54Speaker 5: willing to take the shot. And that's what he did
- 17:56Speaker 5: out in Denver and brought them a chip as well.
- 17:59Speaker 6: And this is what I would say about Tim Connolly.
- 18:01Speaker 6: I know a lot of people are, you know, after
- 18:03Speaker 6: the Knicks won the title and everybody's seeing Kat hoisting
- 18:05Speaker 6: the title around, and I understand why people feel the
- 18:08Speaker 6: way that they do. But one thing I'll say about
- 18:10Speaker 6: Tim Connolly is the guy is a sly fox like
- 18:13Speaker 6: he acts on when he gets in front of the camera.
- 18:16Speaker 6: He acts like, yeah, I don't really know what we're
- 18:18Speaker 6: gonna do. We have options, we could do this, we
- 18:21Speaker 6: might do that, you know, but you know, behind the scenes,
- 18:25Speaker 6: this guy is a shark. He's a shark. He is
- 18:30Speaker 6: gonna swing big, he is going to go for the
- 18:32Speaker 6: home run. And we talked to him on draft night
- 18:36Speaker 6: and we had there was no indication at the end
- 18:39Speaker 6: of round one that a move like this was coming,
- 18:42Speaker 6: no indication whatsoever. And then we didn't get We didn't
- 18:45Speaker 6: really know about it until the end of round two
- 18:47Speaker 6: when we heard the talk about LaMelo Ball suddenly becoming
- 18:50Speaker 6: available in the trade. I mean, we just talked to
- 18:53Speaker 6: Matt Lloyd the GM an hour prior to that, and
- 18:56Speaker 6: suddenly LaMelo Ball is available for a trade, and twelve
- 19:00Speaker 6: hours later he's a member of the Minnesota timber On.
- 19:03Speaker 6: These guys are playing it close to the best. They
- 19:06Speaker 6: don't really give us much of an indication of what
- 19:08Speaker 6: might be ahead. But I love the guts that Tim
- 19:12Speaker 6: Connolly has. If you're if you're standing still, Vince, you're
- 19:15Speaker 6: falling behind. And what does not stand still?
- 19:19Speaker 1: Absolutely? All right?
- 19:21Speaker 5: So all right, people, there's the tea Wolves wrap up
- 19:24Speaker 5: with our main man here the news.
- 19:26Speaker 1: From Fox nine.
- 19:28Speaker 5: It's gonna be fun, and barring injuries and all that
- 19:31Speaker 5: other stuff, it's gonna be very interesting to see how
- 19:33Speaker 5: it plays out before.
- 19:36Speaker 1: We jump into the vikings.
- 19:37Speaker 5: And I'll make it very very quick because you know,
- 19:40Speaker 5: Pierre is a very busy man. Go for football, alright,
- 19:44Speaker 5: go for football.
- 19:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 5: I was talking with some Gopher fans here and you know,
- 19:49Speaker 5: actually I might now a former season ticket holder gave
- 19:52Speaker 5: the season tickets up because I want to do some
- 19:54Speaker 5: other things on some Saturdays, but obviously I'll you know,
- 19:58Speaker 5: I'll still be at a couple of games and follow
- 20:00Speaker 5: my squad. Are we ever going to see another season
- 20:04Speaker 5: like twenty nineteen here? You know, with the new teams
- 20:08Speaker 5: in the league, the rise of the ever powerful Indiana
- 20:12Speaker 5: who's your national championship? Still can't even say it? Are
- 20:17Speaker 5: we are we gonna see another season like that? Where
- 20:21Speaker 5: we you know, we have a top ten squad here
- 20:23Speaker 5: in Minnesota, and obviously nowadays we'd be in the college Playoff.
- 20:29Speaker 6: It's hard for me to see it. It's it's hard
- 20:32Speaker 6: for me to see the pathway to that right now.
- 20:35Speaker 6: And there's a couple of reasons for that. One is
- 20:38Speaker 6: the landscape of college football. We still don't know what
- 20:40Speaker 6: it's going to look like five years from now, let
- 20:42Speaker 6: alone next year. You know, I know Minnesota would love
- 20:46Speaker 6: the expansion of the college football Playoff. They are a
- 20:50Speaker 6: kind of middle of the road team in the Big
- 20:52Speaker 6: Ten that would love to see the expansion of the
- 20:54Speaker 6: college football playoff. And if they have that one good year,
- 20:57Speaker 6: maybe they can get in the playoff if things break
- 21:00Speaker 6: their way. But you know, especially when you bring up Indiana.
- 21:05Speaker 6: You know, Indiana has a Mark Cuban who's got deep pockets,
- 21:10Speaker 6: who can contribute to his alumni.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Well you know that, and people real quick news and
- 21:15Speaker 5: people don't know this, and I've talked about this on
- 21:18Speaker 5: other shows. They have the largest alumni network as well. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:23Speaker 5: people don't know that about Indiana's Again they think it's
- 21:25Speaker 5: just this little flyover state. But yeah, mad money going
- 21:29Speaker 5: into IU.
- 21:31Speaker 6: And so it's like, where where's the money? And again
- 21:35Speaker 6: that brings me to my next point. We live in
- 21:36Speaker 6: a world of nil now, and some of these guys,
- 21:38Speaker 6: these top tier players, expect to be paid and it's
- 21:41Speaker 6: going to take big dollars to compete with the blue
- 21:45Speaker 6: bloods across the country. Where's that money coming from from Minnesota?
- 21:49Speaker 6: Where are the big donors? Where are the alumni pouring
- 21:52Speaker 6: money into try to make sure that this team gets
- 21:54Speaker 6: the best players it possibly can get. That is the world,
- 21:59Speaker 6: the cold world now of college football. I feel for
- 22:02Speaker 6: PJ Fleck because PJ is a guy who runs his
- 22:07Speaker 6: program with the intent of not just solely producing NFL players,
- 22:14Speaker 6: while that is an added benefit and a good selling
- 22:17Speaker 6: point to recruits, which he has done over the last
- 22:20Speaker 6: handful of years. That's that I certainly understand, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 6: understand it from that aspect. It's tough because you don't
- 22:28Speaker 6: pay season tickets and you don't pay a ticket to
- 22:31Speaker 6: the game because the guy's got good grades. That just
- 22:34Speaker 6: doesn't sell. And that's it's it's unfortunate. It's unfortunate because
- 22:40Speaker 6: PJ runs his program to try to make sure that
- 22:44Speaker 6: these guys when they leave school are contributing members of society.
- 22:49Speaker 6: It doesn't have to be with just football. These guys
- 22:51Speaker 6: are getting good grades. They rarely get in trouble. I
- 22:54Speaker 6: know Drake Lindsay had a hiccup last month that was unfortunate.
- 22:58Speaker 6: But outside of that, the guys, you don't hear them
- 23:01Speaker 6: getting into trouble, much trouble off campus, at least not
- 23:04Speaker 6: that we've heard of. You see them graduating, you see
- 23:07Speaker 6: them getting good grades, you see them being competitive on
- 23:10Speaker 6: the field. Unfortunately, those off the field things that are great.
- 23:15Speaker 6: If you're a parent of these kids, you're loving this.
- 23:18Speaker 6: But if you're a season ticket holder, if you want
- 23:19Speaker 6: to pay a ticket to go see winning football, like
- 23:22Speaker 6: a top tier winning football program, it hasn't translated yet.
- 23:26Speaker 6: And that's where I feel for PJ because he's in
- 23:28Speaker 6: the people business as much as he in the football business.
- 23:31Speaker 6: So yeah, it's tough for me to see Minnesota getting
- 23:34Speaker 6: there at any point in the near future. I would
- 23:37Speaker 6: love to see it, but I have a hard time
- 23:38Speaker 6: seeing it.
- 23:39Speaker 1: No, And that's why I wanted to ask you about
- 23:41Speaker 1: it again. I you know, I had some people ask
- 23:43Speaker 1: me about it, and I kind of had the same thought.
- 23:45Speaker 5: It's just, you know, yeah, when you're a Minnesota and
- 23:48Speaker 5: you know, middle of the middle of the tier type
- 23:51Speaker 5: of school, you know, kind of okay alumni, but you know,
- 23:56Speaker 5: because people are you know, you always hear it, Oh,
- 23:58Speaker 5: we have all these fortune five hundred companies here and
- 24:02Speaker 5: that that are headquartered here. But you know, ironically a
- 24:05Speaker 5: lot of the CEOs did not go to Minnesota and
- 24:07Speaker 5: right be trying to steer some of that money elsewhere.
- 24:10Speaker 5: To be honest with you, Okay, let's talk about Minnesota
- 24:13Speaker 5: Vikings training camp next month, the quarterback battle.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Now that Kyler's in town.
- 24:23Speaker 5: What are your initial thoughts. What have you seen from
- 24:26Speaker 5: your you know, time out there and around the scene,
- 24:29Speaker 5: you know, with the little mini camps that have happened
- 24:32Speaker 5: so far.
- 24:32Speaker 1: News.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, I know that a lot of people
- 24:35Speaker 6: want to make, uh make something of the interceptions that
- 24:39Speaker 6: Kyler Murray has thrown in the seven on seven's and
- 24:41Speaker 6: some of that, and I think I think we can
- 24:43Speaker 6: certainly have that conversation. I think Kyler Murray probably needs
- 24:48Speaker 6: a little bit of runway to get himself accustomed to
- 24:50Speaker 6: this offense. Now, if he does need that, does that
- 24:53Speaker 6: give JJ McCarthy an advantage perhaps beating him out? This
- 24:57Speaker 6: is his third year with the program. He knows the offense.
- 25:00Speaker 6: It's on JJ McCarthy to go out there and take
- 25:03Speaker 6: the job. And that's that's where I'm feeling. Even though
- 25:05Speaker 6: I do think Kyler Murray will eventually end up being
- 25:08Speaker 6: the starter, I will take Kevin O'Connell and the Viking's
- 25:13Speaker 6: word as far as them saying it's an open competition.
- 25:17Speaker 6: If it's an open competition, then that means the quarterback
- 25:20Speaker 6: job is there for the taking. If you want it,
- 25:23Speaker 6: go get it. It's up to you to go get
- 25:25Speaker 6: it and take care of business and become the number
- 25:27Speaker 6: one starter here in Minnesota. So if JJ McCarthy wants it,
- 25:31Speaker 6: it's open for him to go and grab it. But
- 25:34Speaker 6: I do believe in the end, Kyler Murray will win
- 25:39Speaker 6: the starting job. Now, I'm not as sold on Kyler
- 25:43Speaker 6: Murray as a lot of other people seem to be
- 25:46Speaker 6: a lot of times when I look at him on tape,
- 25:49Speaker 6: I see a guy who avoids taking contact like the plague.
- 25:52Speaker 6: And it's not because he can get the job done
- 25:55Speaker 6: with his legs, which he certainly can. But does he
- 25:58Speaker 6: stand in the pocket long enough to allow routes to develop?
- 26:02Speaker 6: Can he stand in the pocket and take a hit,
- 26:05Speaker 6: just that one extra second to get a throw off
- 26:08Speaker 6: and not be scared of the contact and just turn
- 26:10Speaker 6: and run. That's my question with Kyler Murray. I don't
- 26:15Speaker 6: know if Kevin o'connall can unlock that in him. He's
- 26:17Speaker 6: got a smaller frame. I understand that he you know,
- 26:21Speaker 6: he doesn't want to get hurt. He hasn't what is it,
- 26:24Speaker 6: one full season, maybe two under in his seven seasons
- 26:28Speaker 6: in the league, or however many it is. But you know,
- 26:31Speaker 6: I'm still a little skeptical about what Kyler Murray can become.
- 26:37Speaker 6: I do think he can be great. I think Kevin
- 26:39Speaker 6: o'cannach can make him great. But I'm gonna reserve judgment
- 26:42Speaker 6: until I get a chance to see it up close
- 26:44Speaker 6: in person exactly now.
- 26:46Speaker 5: You know, there was even rumors, you know, a little
- 26:48Speaker 5: while ago that maybe even JJ was trying to get
- 26:50Speaker 5: out of here and this and that.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But I agree with you. I think it is a
- 26:57Speaker 1: true competition.
- 26:59Speaker 5: I think, like you said, you know, Kylo will probably
- 27:03Speaker 5: win this competition and start, as you know, our starting quarterback.
- 27:07Speaker 5: And I have the same questions as you did too,
- 27:09Speaker 5: because you know, that's what people have talked about with
- 27:11Speaker 5: other Viking quarterback greats. You know, they have been able
- 27:14Speaker 5: to stand in there and take that hit, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 5: stand in the pocket, let those routes develop, and especially
- 27:20Speaker 5: when you got obviously it's you know, my opinion is
- 27:23Speaker 5: still best wide receiver in football. You know out there
- 27:26Speaker 5: as well, that's going to be very important. Have we
- 27:31Speaker 5: heard anything on the interior line, on that offensive line?
- 27:34Speaker 5: What what do we you know, what are we looking
- 27:36Speaker 5: like there? What are your thoughts there?
- 27:37Speaker 1: Nuge?
- 27:38Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, Donovan Jackson is going to be coming back
- 27:41Speaker 6: for a year two. It looks like Blake Brandle is
- 27:43Speaker 6: going to be your starting center. That's what it currently
- 27:46Speaker 6: looks like. I know that they have faith and confidence
- 27:49Speaker 6: in him to take over that position. And be the
- 27:53Speaker 6: full time starter at Center. So you know, Will Fryes
- 27:57Speaker 6: is there for you at Guard as well. You have
- 27:59Speaker 6: your bookends that you're you've had for a number of
- 28:02Speaker 6: years now, so uh Center Guard, Yeah, listen, I think that. God,
- 28:09Speaker 6: I think you're fine at Guard. I think you're fine,
- 28:12Speaker 6: Uh Center, Blake Brandle, can he can he prove to
- 28:15Speaker 6: be a weekly proven commodity at the position. I guess
- 28:20Speaker 6: we're gonna wait and see. But as far as the
- 28:22Speaker 6: rest of the line goes, I think you're you're looking
- 28:26Speaker 6: pretty good. I mean, you can never have enough depth
- 28:28Speaker 6: at the position, so h But I think right now,
- 28:31Speaker 6: as far as the interior of the line goes, if
- 28:33Speaker 6: you're looking specifically at Guard, I think we're feeling pretty
- 28:36Speaker 6: good for the most part. And that's something we haven't
- 28:38Speaker 6: been able to say over the years. But Guarter, you're okay.
- 28:41Speaker 6: Blake Brandle, Hey, it's your job, now show it to.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Me right exactly. Hey, man, is here's since Smith retired?
- 28:50Speaker 6: Great question?
- 28:52Speaker 1: Or does he just want to play elsewhere?
- 28:54Speaker 6: I I don't know if he necessarily wants to play
- 28:56Speaker 6: elsewhere that that's I don't think that might be the case.
- 29:00Speaker 6: I think I think the longer this goes on, the
- 29:04Speaker 6: more I'm starting to think this is a classic example
- 29:07Speaker 6: of a veteran who you know, just needed to take
- 29:10Speaker 6: some time in the offseason, doesn't really want to show
- 29:13Speaker 6: up to mini camp. Maybe doesn't even want to show
- 29:16Speaker 6: up to training camp. He may not even want to
- 29:18Speaker 6: show up to training camp. It's like, I don't want
- 29:20Speaker 6: to go through this. You know, this is not really
- 29:24Speaker 6: you know, after however many years he's been in the league,
- 29:28Speaker 6: I really don't want to go through another training camp.
- 29:30Speaker 6: I just don't feel like it. The door is open,
- 29:33Speaker 6: the door is open for him to return if he
- 29:36Speaker 6: wants to play football. I think he will play football,
- 29:39Speaker 6: and I think he will play in the Vikings uniform.
- 29:41Speaker 6: So it's still a toss up. There are times I'm sure,
- 29:46Speaker 6: I'm sure Harrison Smith is probably thinking to himself. There
- 29:48Speaker 6: are days where it's great where I can send on
- 29:51Speaker 6: my couch or I can just go out and play
- 29:53Speaker 6: golf and I don't have to worry about football. This
- 29:55Speaker 6: is good. This retirement life is great. But as you know, Vince,
- 29:59Speaker 6: being around a fleets when it starts to get a
- 30:02Speaker 6: little closer to the season. If they're in this position,
- 30:04Speaker 6: they start to get the itch, they start to get
- 30:08Speaker 6: the itch. Am I am I ready to be full
- 30:10Speaker 6: time dad? Am I ready to be full time husband?
- 30:14Speaker 6: I don't know, I might miss the guys, I might
- 30:15Speaker 6: miss the locker room. So it's still up in the air.
- 30:19Speaker 6: It's still up in the air.
- 30:20Speaker 1: No exactly.
- 30:21Speaker 5: And that's why, you know, that's that is a huge
- 30:23Speaker 5: part of it. People obviously keep forgetting that. You know,
- 30:26Speaker 5: it's just being around the scene, you know, being around
- 30:30Speaker 5: the guys in the locker room, you know, the you
- 30:32Speaker 5: know those times on the plane, you know, the poker games.
- 30:36Speaker 1: All the other stuff, you know.
- 30:37Speaker 5: I mean, it's it's you know, and then when you
- 30:39Speaker 5: do want to say goodbye to it, it can definitely
- 30:42Speaker 5: be tough. Okay, a couple more minutes with the news.
- 30:46Speaker 5: So Kevin O'Connell, our head coach, Yeah, is he on
- 30:52Speaker 5: the hot seat? This year? He's gotten a lot of leeway. Yeah,
- 30:58Speaker 5: you know, some well deserved you know. Yeah, I think
- 31:00Speaker 5: he's a I think he's a very good coach. Yeah, well,
- 31:04Speaker 5: you know, kind of you know, he's been here for
- 31:06Speaker 5: a while now and we're kind of getting to that point.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Maybe is he on the hot seat?
- 31:12Speaker 6: If he's not, I think there's a problem, okay, And
- 31:15Speaker 6: and and the reason why I say that is because, yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 6: like you just said, he he is widely respected, not
- 31:20Speaker 6: just here in Minnesota, but across the league. If he
- 31:23Speaker 6: got fired tomorrow, he would get hired the following day
- 31:25Speaker 6: by somebody. There's no question in my mind that that
- 31:27Speaker 6: would happen. But in fairness, he's been the head coach
- 31:31Speaker 6: here for four seasons, zero playoff wins. I've seen people
- 31:36Speaker 6: get fired for a lot less than so, so if
- 31:40Speaker 6: he's not on the hot seat, if he doesn't feel
- 31:43Speaker 6: some heat, I think there's a problem because at this
- 31:46Speaker 6: point now you are expected to produce results. You've had
- 31:50Speaker 6: enough time to develop guys to run your program, you know,
- 31:54Speaker 6: to put your scheme in and have everybody get on board.
- 31:57Speaker 6: This is now your fifth season as the head coach
- 31:59Speaker 6: of this team. If you don't at minimum win a
- 32:03Speaker 6: playoff game, you might be looking for employment elsewhere you
- 32:07Speaker 6: might be you know. And and Nolan Teasley's coming in here,
- 32:11Speaker 6: and listen, Nolan Teasley didn't hire Kevin O'Connell. Nolan Teasley
- 32:16Speaker 6: didn't get to pick his quarterback, right, So, And I'm
- 32:21Speaker 6: not a fan especially in the NFL. I'm not a
- 32:23Speaker 6: fan of arranged marriages, so interesting. So Kevin O'Connell, to me,
- 32:29Speaker 6: I think has a lot to prove this year, a
- 32:33Speaker 6: lot to prove. So he as much, like I said,
- 32:37Speaker 6: as much as he's widely respected and and we all
- 32:41Speaker 6: think he's got a brilliant offensive mind, which which I'm
- 32:43Speaker 6: one of those people. I think he does, and I
- 32:45Speaker 6: think he he has the ability to get the best
- 32:47Speaker 6: out of his players. But it's a results oriented business.
- 32:52Speaker 6: And you know, we've seen the Packers get it done
- 32:55Speaker 6: in the postseason. We've seen the Lions get it done
- 32:57Speaker 6: in the postseason. And the Bears just went to the
- 32:59Speaker 6: second they won the division, just just got to the
- 33:01Speaker 6: second round. They were close to getting to the NFC
- 33:03Speaker 6: champions Right exactly where are the Vikings now? Is anybody
- 33:09Speaker 6: taking the Vikings seriously? Does anybody? Is anybody looking at
- 33:12Speaker 6: the Vikings and considering them a threat?
- 33:14Speaker 2: Not?
- 33:14Speaker 6: Right now? They're not. Not right now, they're not. So
- 33:18Speaker 6: there's a lot to prove for Kevin O'Connor this season,
- 33:20Speaker 6: in my opinion.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 33:21Speaker 5: I got a friend that does sports over in Green Bay,
- 33:25Speaker 5: and you know that's what I was talking to him
- 33:27Speaker 5: about because everybody else and even with Detroit kind of
- 33:31Speaker 5: coming back to the pack a little bit after you know,
- 33:33Speaker 5: the past couple of seasons for them, but.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Still excitement out there for them.
- 33:38Speaker 5: And yeah, it's just like the Vikings, you know, you
- 33:41Speaker 5: start thinking about it's like, man, are we the last
- 33:43Speaker 5: place team in this division all of a sudden, Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 5: and could very well be.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Real quick news.
- 33:51Speaker 5: What are your thoughts on the defensive side of the
- 33:53Speaker 5: ball here? You know, Caleb Banks first round pick. I'm
- 33:57Speaker 5: looking over at my screen here out of Florida. There
- 34:00Speaker 5: are definitely some questions about him. But you know, first
- 34:03Speaker 5: round pick. You know, took a linebacker from Cincinnati, safety
- 34:08Speaker 5: from Miami, Kobe Thomas, who I actually think may actually
- 34:12Speaker 5: be a player in this league someday.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But but yeah, just your.
- 34:16Speaker 5: Initial thoughts on the defensive side of the ball and
- 34:18Speaker 5: what we may be looking at as we go into
- 34:20Speaker 5: training camp.
- 34:21Speaker 6: Yeah, my biggest question mark remains in the trenches up front.
- 34:25Speaker 6: You know, you got rid of Jonathan Allen, you got
- 34:27Speaker 6: rid of Yavon Hargrave and and I don't blame you
- 34:30Speaker 6: for doing that. I mean they came in here last
- 34:31Speaker 6: year and were for the most part unproductive. They didn't
- 34:33Speaker 6: produce the numbers that we all thought they would when
- 34:36Speaker 6: they came in here to Minnesota. And then you've got
- 34:38Speaker 6: two rookies along the defensive line. One of them is
- 34:40Speaker 6: already injured in Caleb Banks, and we're covering from injury,
- 34:43Speaker 6: i should say, and the other Dominique Orange. We don't
- 34:47Speaker 6: know what he's going to be at the NFL level yet.
- 34:50Speaker 6: So that is where my question lies really is along
- 34:53Speaker 6: the defensive front. Because if you don't got the big
- 34:56Speaker 6: boys up front to cause havoc at the line of scrimmage,
- 34:59Speaker 6: then nothing else matters. So this is a team that
- 35:05Speaker 6: I think are gonna need young players like you just
- 35:07Speaker 6: said to contribute maybe quicker than Brian Flores might be
- 35:12Speaker 6: accustomed to a very demanding coach. Brian Flores is. But
- 35:17Speaker 6: to be perfectly honest, you know, I've said it for
- 35:19Speaker 6: ever since he got here, I'm I'm a huge fan
- 35:22Speaker 6: of Brian Flora as the coach. I am a believer
- 35:25Speaker 6: of Brian Flora as the coach. Now are his players
- 35:30Speaker 6: and do the people that work with him are they
- 35:32Speaker 6: a fan of him? You'd have to ask them. I
- 35:35Speaker 6: think the jury might be out depending on who you ask.
- 35:38Speaker 6: But like I said, I would be a hypocrite if
- 35:42Speaker 6: I wouldn't point to the results and it being a
- 35:45Speaker 6: results oriented business. And for the most part it hasn't
- 35:48Speaker 6: been perfect. But for the most part, Brian Flores has
- 35:51Speaker 6: produced very solid, steady results with this Minnesota defense ever
- 35:56Speaker 6: since he's gotten here. So I have a lot of
- 35:58Speaker 6: faith in Brian Flores. It's just gonna be a crash
- 36:02Speaker 6: course for some of these young players on defense to
- 36:04Speaker 6: get up to speed as quickly as they possibly can
- 36:06Speaker 6: to help balance this team out.
- 36:08Speaker 5: Okay, and last Vikings question kind of the same thing
- 36:11Speaker 5: that I asked you about the Timberwolves. What is this
- 36:13Speaker 5: successful season? Let's say, you know, the common knowledge maybe
- 36:17Speaker 5: comes the past. Murray is our starting quarterback. What does
- 36:21Speaker 5: this successful season look like for you with the Vikings
- 36:24Speaker 5: next year? If that is in fact the case.
- 36:27Speaker 6: To me, it's eleven or twelve wins. It's hosting the
- 36:31Speaker 6: first round playoff game, you know that that and winning
- 36:36Speaker 6: it More importantly, I should say, yeah, you have to.
- 36:39Speaker 6: You have to win at least one playoff game to
- 36:41Speaker 6: inspire any kind of confidence I think in this fan base.
- 36:44Speaker 6: If you're asked I that to me is the bare
- 36:46Speaker 6: minimum to me personally, me personally, if you're asking me,
- 36:49Speaker 6: I think, I think in order to really establish confidence
- 36:55Speaker 6: moving forward, you got to get to the NFC Championship game. Okay,
- 36:59Speaker 6: that that seems like a tall order. I know I
- 37:02Speaker 6: might be being a little unfair perhaps, but to me,
- 37:07Speaker 6: that's where if you want to inspire real confidence in
- 37:11Speaker 6: this fan base that we have the right coach, we
- 37:14Speaker 6: have the right players, get me to the NFC Championship Game,
- 37:19Speaker 6: and then we'll see what happens from there. But at
- 37:21Speaker 6: bare minimum, this team has to win a playoff game.
- 37:23Speaker 6: At bare minimum, let's be honest, because if they don't, Vince,
- 37:27Speaker 6: I think you're gonna see a different head coach in
- 37:29Speaker 6: Minnesota next year.
- 37:30Speaker 1: There you go, all right, well a News, I'll let
- 37:33Speaker 1: you go.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Man.
- 37:34Speaker 5: I want to thank you for taking thirty three minutes
- 37:37Speaker 5: and forty two seconds of your time this morning. And
- 37:41Speaker 5: I always love talking sports with you, man, and I
- 37:43Speaker 5: really really love what you do. Keep up the good
- 37:47Speaker 5: job over there at Fox, and I and my.
- 37:48Speaker 6: Friend mister Governor, it's a pleasure to be on with
- 37:50Speaker 6: you appreciate it so much.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Hey, oh A, how's married?
- 37:53Speaker 6: Life. Married life is great, see Pops, yep, yeah yeah.
- 37:58Speaker 6: We are like or four weeks away from that, so
- 38:02Speaker 6: wish yeah, wish me luck. Uh you won't. You won't
- 38:05Speaker 6: be seeing me at training camp this season. I'll probably
- 38:08Speaker 6: be on fraternity lead, that's all right, but I'll be
- 38:11Speaker 6: back in time for the start of the season.
- 38:12Speaker 1: So oh good. Hey man, congrats again on that.
- 38:16Speaker 5: You know that was loved all the pictures that you
- 38:18Speaker 5: put out there on your social media, and congrats to
- 38:21Speaker 5: you on your beautiful bride and we will talk again soon.
- 38:24Speaker 6: Thank you so much. We really appreciate it. Thanks VI.
