- 0:07videos. So, if you want to see the
- 0:08visuals, we invite you to find us on YouTube.
- 0:11Thanks for listening and enjoy. I'm Taylor and I'm Lisa.
- 0:16This is scripture Central's. Come follow me.
- 0:18Insights today a special Easter episode and thank you for being
- 0:22with us today. And Delight to have you here
- 0:25Lisa, we love spending time, talking about the gospel, and
- 0:29sure. Any scriptures we want to begin
- 0:32with this question. Have you ever had a moment in
- 0:34your life where you felt like you needed healing or that there
- 0:38was chaos or disorder in your life?
- 0:42One way to look at Easter is, as a time of healing of bringing
- 0:48order where there had been disorder or peace, where there
- 0:52have been chaos. So as we spent some time today,
- 0:55talking about the Glorious resurrection and the Of Jesus
- 1:01healing Divine love for our souls in our bodies.
- 1:05We hope that you can see in your own life where Jesus has and can
- 1:09kill you. There are two paintings that
- 1:14have to do with the crucifixion and the resurrection the times
- 1:21before. And after that, I wanted to talk
- 1:23about for just a moment because they show that Christ is the
- 1:28focal point of Strength and of healing.
- 1:32One of those is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci called The
- 1:35Last Supper. I'm sure you all have seen it
- 1:38and it depicts the very moment where the disciples the apostles
- 1:45ask, whether they are the person, they are the ones who
- 1:51will betray the Lord. So let me read a few verses to
- 1:55you from Matthew chapter 26, starting in verse 20.
- 2:00On and as they did eat, he Christ said, verily, I say unto
- 2:06you, that one of you shall betray me, and they were
- 2:09exceeding sorrowful and began every one of them to say unto
- 2:14him. Lord, is it?
- 2:16I, we capture the apostles at that very moment.
- 2:20And if you look at the 12 of them, they are feeling a torrent
- 2:27of emotions they are. Ke Chaotic.
- 2:31The only one who is Serene and peaceful and strong in that
- 2:36painting is the Lord there in the center, but they asked Lord,
- 2:42is it? I, and so in this painting
- 2:45reminds us of the importance of humility and of self-reflection.
- 2:51It was actually painted to be in the dining room of a monastery.
- 2:55So the monks could feel as if they sat with the apostles and
- 2:59with the law, And could be reminded that they also needed
- 3:02to ask. Lord, is that I, what sins do I
- 3:05need to remove from my life? How can I be more devoted unto
- 3:11you and Christ stands there? Steady ready.
- 3:16Only a few hours from Gethsemane.
- 3:19The second painting is Caravaggio supper at Emmaus and
- 3:24I would say that this asks the opposite question it asks Lord
- 3:29is it the The that doesn't come from the scriptures about this
- 3:33moment, but but what happens is, so these two disciples had to
- 3:38walked with Christ on the road to Emmaus from Jerusalem to
- 3:43Emmaus and and they had begged of him to come and have supper
- 3:49with them. And what's interesting about
- 3:51this story is they are walking with a stranger.
- 3:54So they're walking in the stranger, joins them.
- 3:57Now we know, it's Jesus but they don't know.
- 4:00And there is this moment this this reveal were suddenly they
- 4:03see this is the savior and this painting or talking about
- 4:08capture this moment almost like a snapshot of the very moment of
- 4:12surprise and excitement truly this is Jesus Christ.
- 4:17Let me read a few verses that talk about that moment.
- 4:20I'm in Luke chapter 24 verses 30 through 32 when it came to pass
- 4:26as he Christ set up meet with them, he took Bread and blessed
- 4:31it and Brake and gave to them and their eyes were opened, and
- 4:35they knew him and he vanished out of their sight.
- 4:39And they said, one to another did not our heart burn within us
- 4:42while he talked with us by the way.
- 4:44And while he opened to us the scriptures and the painting
- 4:47captures, this moment of surprise, one of the disciples
- 4:52has thrown his arms wide. The other half stands as if to
- 4:58jump out of his seat and Once again, the savior is there in
- 5:03the center, the Paradigm of strength and peace.
- 5:10Reminding us that we too want to recognize him Lord.
- 5:16Is it the how can we better recognize him in our lives?
- 5:20This is a really powerful pairing, two important questions
- 5:23that we can think about, at Easter or any time in our lives.
- 5:27Lord, is it, I where can Hi, be more aligned with thee and then
- 5:32Lord. Is it the where have I seen the
- 5:37in my life? But I may have missed it, very,
- 5:41very powerful. In fact, the resurrection story,
- 5:44when we read them carefully in the scriptures, there is a lot
- 5:47of surprise of people discovering that Lord.
- 5:51It is the and being not knowing in advance that this was what
- 5:56was going to happen. Now we have the benefit of
- 5:58hindsight we know how the In story, turns out, but for all
- 6:02the disciples they were a little surprised similarly, in our
- 6:06lives. God often does surprising or
- 6:09shocking things that, at first in the moment, we may not
- 6:13recognize how he is healing us or bringing order where there is
- 6:18disorder or bringing peace, where there's chaos.
- 6:21And in the moment, we may not get it, we may fill ourselves,
- 6:24shocked or worried, but when we ask the question, Lord is at the
- 6:30Where can I see thy hand? Steadying my life?
- 6:34I think we're more likely to be like these disciples like, oh my
- 6:37gosh. Jesus is everywhere in my life.
- 6:40Bringing peace and healing and order out of chaos.
- 6:44I really love this word Easter because I think it's a great
- 6:48reminder of this very concept that every day as we think about
- 6:54the Rising Sun, we can remember That it is a symbol, that all of
- 7:01us will be resurrected. All of us can have God's
- 7:04stability and Order and peace where there's chaos.
- 7:08So the word Easter comes with a word East and every morning in
- 7:13the East the sun rises every single morning.
- 7:17So whatever your experience in a life you may personally be
- 7:20feeling chaos or disorder or that you need healing and maybe
- 7:24that's not going to be solved immediately.
- 7:27But every morning, God gives you a reminder that just as sure as
- 7:34the sun rises and just as sure as the sun himself rose that
- 7:39Jesus was resurrected you too. Will rise from your chaotic
- 7:44Fallen circumstances and be at peace and see that the Lord it
- 7:49is. The it has been with me in my
- 7:51life. So we have this other word
- 7:54resurrection and the word re in Latin means again.
- 7:59And sore means on or above. And this one means, right?
- 8:05So, literally means to stand. Up to stand upright.
- 8:11Again that's what Resurrection is.
- 8:13We've been dead. We've been raised back to life
- 8:17in some future day. All of us will be raised from
- 8:20Death. We all need the symbol of
- 8:23Resurrection on a regular basis. We need a healing, there's chaos
- 8:26in our lives and we want to be able to stand upright.
- 8:29Again, instead of feeling like we're in, this Fallen nature,
- 8:32we're just in the dust of suffering and struggling.
- 8:35So, Christians now have Sunday as their Originally it was
- 8:39Saturday but now it was seen as Sunday.
- 8:43Now, originally, if we go back to the creation story, God
- 8:46spends his time over six days, creating peace, Harmony, and
- 8:52Order where there had been disorder.
- 8:54He separates. There's been all this chaos
- 8:56chaos, and he separates opposites puts everything in its
- 9:00place and he brings peace. And the Sabbath day is a day for
- 9:04God to sit in his Divine temple, on the throne, And that is a
- 9:09symbol that the world is no longer at War.
- 9:12It's at peace, there's healing and Harmony.
- 9:15So, one of the invitations for the Sabbath day is to remember
- 9:18God's Divine rested. That's what he offers us.
- 9:21Now, it's interesting, the Last Supper that Lisa just shared
- 9:25with us that that painting The Last Supper that last supper was
- 9:30a Passover meal. As we remember, the Israelites
- 9:33were stuck in the chaos and the disorder of their fallen
- 9:37situation in. Edge in Egypt that symbolizes
- 9:40all of us and only God could save them and extract them and
- 9:44he could solve the disorder, he could heal them and bring them
- 9:48to his symbolic Temple at Mount Sinai were there.
- 9:51There was going to be divine rest and healing.
- 9:55So now when we celebrate Easter Sabbath and every Sabbath where
- 10:00we partake of the sacrament, which is a version of the
- 10:03Passover, we remember God's creation that he places.
- 10:08Order where there's been chaos he heals.
- 10:11And that everything is at Divine rest, and this is all created
- 10:16because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ that he has taken
- 10:21us out of our death and lifted us up into Divine rest.
- 10:27So we hope you can feel this theme and see in your life where
- 10:31God has given you healing and divine rest.
- 10:33And that every Sabbath, every Easter, for every Sunrise can be
- 10:38a Minder to you that healing through Jesus Christ is
- 10:41possible. So you may have noticed a
- 10:46pattern that when I come and join Taylor or Taylor and Tyler.
- 10:51I often love to be able to speak of women in the scriptures and I
- 10:57must say that the four gospels have more activity, more
- 11:05interaction with women than probably any other place in the
- 11:09scriptures. And so, I love that and I'm
- 11:13here. Here.
- 11:13And I wanted to talk about some of my thoughts about having
- 11:17women in the in involved with the Resurrection, the
- 11:23crucifixion as well. We know that women were at the
- 11:26cross trying in any way that they could to strengthen him.
- 11:30Although, you know, in the end he had to endure this on his
- 11:34own, but they were there showing him their love their devotion.
- 11:39So in the story of the Resurrection women have the
- 11:43Which have interacting with angels.
- 11:46We see both in Luke 24 and in Matthew 28, that they are told
- 11:51he is not here. He has risen.
- 11:55And they were there when they get this special moment.
- 11:59With angels, they're there to serve.
- 12:01I think that reminds us when we are serving we have blessings
- 12:06opened up unto us as well as the blessings that we hopefully are
- 12:10giving to those, that we serve, they were their Acting out of
- 12:14love. And I think that reminds us that
- 12:16when we act out of love, God is there God, his angels, his
- 12:21spirit is there in our life, so let's focus on Mary Magdalene
- 12:27the different gospels have slight variations to the story
- 12:31but we know that in in every single one Mary Magdalene, is
- 12:36there and she, she is there at the tomb on Sunday morning.
- 12:45We know that she's already seen if we're in John 20, we find
- 12:50that she has already seen that. The tomb is empty.
- 12:53She's gone and reported it to the apostles Peter and John have
- 12:58run to the tomb Peters burst into it.
- 13:02John has entered and they've seen that they've seen the
- 13:06Linens but no Christ, they end up returning to their home.
- 13:11But Mary seems to have and because if we open John chapter
- 13:1620 and we look at verse 11, but Mary stood without at the
- 13:21Sepulchre weeping. And as she wept, she stooped
- 13:25down and looked into the Sepulchre and seeth, two angels,
- 13:28in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet
- 13:32where the body of Jesus had Lain and they say and her woman, why
- 13:36weepest thou she saith unto them because they have taken away my
- 13:41Lord and I know not They have late where they have laid him so
- 13:49she then as we know interacts with the Risen Lord himself and
- 13:55in verse 14, when she had the said she turned herself back and
- 14:00saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus and he saith
- 14:05unto her woman. Why weepest thou whom seekest
- 14:09thou she supposing him to be the gardener.
- 14:14Saith unto him, sir. If thou have borne him, hence,
- 14:17tell me where thou Hast laid him and I will take him away.
- 14:21I think it's, I think it's beautiful that she mistakes the
- 14:25Lord of us all someone, she has been completely devoted to us
- 14:30followed for years as one of his most devoted disciples and she
- 14:36sees him and mistakes, the Lord for a loan lowly Gardener.
- 14:41So then of course, There is such.
- 14:45So it's kind of like she is having a Lord, she doesn't even
- 14:49get asked. Lord, is it thee?
- 14:52If we continue in verse 16, Jesus saith unto her Mary.
- 14:58She turned herself and saith unto him rabboni which is to say
- 15:02master so that is her lowered. It is the moment she recognizes
- 15:11him and what an amazing and wonderful and all inducing
- 15:19moment, it must have been This is important thing.
- 15:23Again, we're in our lives. When we are dealing with a need
- 15:27for healing or we have Brokenness, we have to first,
- 15:30ask more, does it? I what can I do to solve this
- 15:34problem? But not just on our own board is
- 15:36at the where we can see that God is in the details.
- 15:41He often is gardening in our lives, making things, beautiful,
- 15:45and fruitful, and sometimes we miss it.
- 15:48And if we seek, we will like Mary C, we will see the Lord
- 15:54gardening in our lives, bringing Bounty where perhaps, we thought
- 15:58we saw destruction or chaos or disorder.
- 16:04I want to share one of my favorite general conference
- 16:06talks. About Easter is Elder wirthlin.
- 16:10Joseph B wirthlin and his talk entitled Sunday will come.
- 16:16Let me read some of his words. He sizes that there will be that
- 16:23moment when the resurrected Lord is there.
- 16:26When he and Foretells that all of us will one day be
- 16:31resurrected. So Elder wirthlin says on that
- 16:35Friday the savior of mankind was humiliated and bruised abused
- 16:40and reviled. It was Friday.
- 16:43It was a Friday filled with devastating consuming sorrow
- 16:46that nod at The Souls of those who loved and honored.
- 16:50The Son of God. I think that all the days since
- 16:53the beginning of the world's this world history that Friday
- 16:57was the day Darkest each of us will have our own Fridays, those
- 17:02days when the universe itself seems shattered and the shards
- 17:05of our world Li littered about us in pieces, we also
- 17:10experienced those broken times when it seems, we can never be
- 17:14put together again. We will all have our Fridays.
- 17:19I believe that all of us have had Friday's and we've had those
- 17:24moments when we feel completely broken, when we are in need of
- 17:27the savior's healing. So Elder wirthlin continues, but
- 17:32the Doom of that day did not endure the despair.
- 17:36Despair did not linger because on Sunday, the resurrected,
- 17:41Lord, burst the bonds of death. He ascended from the grave and
- 17:45appeared gloriously triumphant as a savior of all All Mankind.
- 17:50And in an instant, the eyes that had been filled with overflowing
- 17:55tears, dried. But I testify to you, in the
- 18:00name of the one who conquered death Sunday, will come in the
- 18:05darkest of her sorrow Sunday will come, no matter our
- 18:09desperation. No matter our grief Sunday will
- 18:12come in this life or the next Sunday will come.
- 18:18This is a really important reminder, Lisa, we all suffer.
- 18:22We actually all signed up in the premortal Life, wanting to
- 18:26experience joy. We were willing to sign up to
- 18:31have suffering that we would have opposition that we would
- 18:36have to sometimes experience the bitter.
- 18:38So we would know how to prize the sweet and what is the total
- 18:42or complete or ultimate sweetness?
- 18:46It is the love of Jesus Christ, it's that fruit that is talked
- 18:50about in first Nephi at the Tree of Life were after getting
- 18:55through those dark moments holding on the rod, we fall down
- 18:57the tree and partake of that sweet fruit.
- 19:01And I don't know anybody who desires or glories and
- 19:05suffering, it's hard, we've all had it.
- 19:09And yet those moments, when we endure, Become moments of
- 19:15personal. Resurrection, where we are
- 19:18uplifted again and see more fully.
- 19:21The sweetness of God's love and peace.
- 19:25One of my Friday's was when I lost my hearing.
- 19:31I grew up with a mild hearing loss, but it worsened.
- 19:33And then in my mid-40s, just nosedived and I had already had
- 19:40one cochlear implant put in. And then a few years later, the
- 19:45second year lost its Hearing, in fact, I had travelled to India
- 19:51with Taylor. He was starting a tour of India
- 19:54and Nepal and Bhutan. And the morning we were to catch
- 19:58the flight my natural Hearing in my other ear.
- 20:03Just didn't work, but we drove to the airport.
- 20:08So Taylor gave me a blessing and we continue to fly to India.
- 20:13That something would change. But by the time we had arrived
- 20:17there, nothing had changed. And somehow even though we
- 20:21thought we had the converter, right, when I plugged in, my
- 20:25recharger for my cochlear fried. So I had one ear that wasn't
- 20:30Hearing in one ear that had limited battery charge left.
- 20:35So I turned around and flew home.
- 20:38Yeah you had eight hours of battery charge and I also
- 20:40remember this really good man from India.
- 20:43The This ophthalmologist who stayed up till midnight waiting
- 20:46for us to get to his office just so we could check to see.
- 20:49And he was just so kind and so thoughtful, I don't you think
- 20:52even charged us and just remember at 3:00 in the morning,
- 20:57we realize you'll need to head home without hearing all the way
- 21:02back to United States. Hoping that maybe some doctor
- 21:06United States might build a help reverse this hearing loss, it
- 21:09was, it was frankly, a very discouraging, very scary moment.
- 21:13It's he was an audiologist, not an ophthalmologist, but yes to
- 21:19there's all the other details, right?
- 21:21So I arrived home and I asked my brother-in-law to give me yet
- 21:28another blessing, and he gave me the most beautiful blessing
- 21:34after he and my sister left. I kneel down on my knees and
- 21:39just plead with the Lord weeping.
- 21:44I was so afraid. Because my cochlear gave me
- 21:48comprehension, but the quality was a little strange till after
- 21:54three years of having a and the other ear wasn't hearing
- 21:58anything. And I wept, I said, well, I ever
- 22:03hear my son become a teenager and his voice change and be
- 22:09deeper. Well, I hear my daughter.
- 22:13Go to the temple with the man that she loves.
- 22:16Well, I hear the voices of my grandchildren.
- 22:20I was so fearful not to have any kind of sound quality that would
- 22:25be natural and I plead with the Lord and I had a sure witness of
- 22:34the Lord's love for me. I had a sure witness of his
- 22:39power to heal all wounds to fill it my gaps.
- 22:46And I knew that I would have ultimate healing.
- 22:50That didn't mean that, you know, they're at the moment, I
- 22:53regained all my natural hearing but I knew that ultimate healing
- 22:58was sure. Right?
- 23:00Knew that the resurrection was sure.
- 23:05This experience came in the middle of President, Nelson's
- 23:10challenge, that we read the book of Mormon and I knew at that
- 23:14moment, that the Book of Mormon was true.
- 23:18And that one of the greatest truths, that it taught was that
- 23:21the Lord keeps his promises. So I knew that what I was
- 23:28learning and feeling at that moment that he would keep those
- 23:31promises that he was giving unto me.
- 23:35I also knew that I needed to testify of this and so I testify
- 23:38to you that the resurrection is sure that God's love for
- 23:44everyone of us for you, is sure that the Book of Mormon gives us
- 23:49that strength and that Promises of the Lord will keep his.
- 23:53His, his word unto us. I want to bear that testimony to
- 24:00you and say those words in the name of the Savior Jesus Christ.
- 24:04Amen. This is a really powerful
- 24:06testimony Lisa. We've known each other.
- 24:08Now, for several decades, and I've always known you as
- 24:11somebody who is faithful who loves God, who wants to bring
- 24:15good to the world. And I was gone for three weeks,
- 24:19you were at home suffering with this hearing loss which
- 24:22eventually you lost all of your hearing.
- 24:25You didn't get the answer you wanted and you had to get a
- 24:28another cochlear implant. But I remember coming home and I
- 24:33had been worried about you. You for these three weeks,
- 24:36haven't been able to interact, much with you wondering, how is
- 24:39she doing? And I get back and there have
- 24:42been this transform moment. I mean, I was actually in some
- 24:46ways shocked because I couldn't imagine how can my wife get any
- 24:52better than she is? She's already amazing.
- 24:54It's almost like you had been upgraded and up leveled in your
- 24:58life. I came home And instead of just
- 25:02the chaos of the suffering, you'd had, this probably would
- 25:07have maybe the most powerful witness you had ever received of
- 25:12the reality of the love of Jesus Christ that the resurrection is
- 25:15real, that the Book of Mormon is a witness of Jesus Christ.
- 25:19I remember coming home, just basking in your just expanded
- 25:23love and testimony in the face. Of suffering that was still
- 25:28ongoing. That had not been resolved and
- 25:31is almost like, it didn't exist because you had just been
- 25:35wrapped up in the totality of God's love that healing will
- 25:41come very, very powerful. So we share these things with
- 25:46you because all of us suffer Sometimes more sometimes less
- 25:52Easter is a time to remember. We should be oriented East
- 25:56towards the Rising Sun. A symbol, that everyday Jesus.
- 26:00Will heal us every day. The sun reminds us that order
- 26:05and peace is possible that God is in his Heaven is the temple.
- 26:10He is there. The world doesn't need to be at
- 26:14War when God is in his Temple. Things are at Peace.
- 26:18So, no matter the chaos or the disorder, or the lack of
- 26:21healing, your life, we invite you Lord, is it?
- 26:25I Lord. Is it the can we see him in our
- 26:30lives and let his divine presence seep into the cracks of
- 26:34the Brokenness and feel our souls to the brim to overflowing
- 26:38where we know? And we can taste the sweetness
- 26:42of the atonement and have the Hope in the ultimate
- 26:46resurrection that he has promised to all.
- 26:50And we leave these things with you and in the name of Jesus
- 26:53Christ. Amen.
- 26:56Know that you are loved and spread light and goodness.
