- 1:53Speaker 2: Valley of Dry Bones In our last story, the remnant
- 1:58Speaker 2: of Judah struggled to regain stability. Some leaders desired to
- 2:02Speaker 2: serve Babylon and make peace. Others desired to rebel. As
- 2:07Speaker 2: a result, brother turned against brother. The remnant of Judah
- 2:11Speaker 2: was torn, and many of them fled to Egypt, despite
- 2:15Speaker 2: Jeremiah's warnings. Now we are introduced to another prophet by
- 2:19Speaker 2: the name of Ezekiel. Ezekiel is given a unique glimpse
- 2:23Speaker 2: into the heart and mind of God. He is taken
- 2:27Speaker 2: up by his spirit and shown an image of Israel's
- 2:30Speaker 2: dead souls coming back to life, inspired by the book
- 2:34Speaker 2: of Ezekiel.

- 3:27Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our last episode, we heard about
- 3:35Speaker 3: the remnant of Judah that remained in the land after
- 3:38Speaker 3: the Babylonian conquest. Those who stayed had a difficult, demanding task.
- 3:44Speaker 3: It was rebuilding their homeland, which was laying in ruins.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Though they tried to remain faithful to God, Evil conspired
- 3:51Speaker 3: against those who sought to do God's will. In fear,
- 3:55Speaker 3: much of the remnant fled to Egypt rather than trust
- 3:57Speaker 3: in God's provision and protection. Today, we will meet a
- 4:01Speaker 3: new prophet, a man named Ezekiel, who will receive an
- 4:05Speaker 3: awesome vision from God that shows him God's heart for
- 4:08Speaker 3: his people and the power that only the God of
- 4:11Speaker 3: Israel possesses to bring life even to dead, dry bones.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the reading from God's Word. It
- 4:20Speaker 3: was dusk.
- 4:22Speaker 2: The sky was painted a strong amber, and the prophet
- 4:25Speaker 2: Ezekiel was walking among the fields. The light breeze whistled
- 4:29Speaker 2: through the valley, causing the grain to dance back and forth.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Ezekiel looked up to heaven, praying to the Lord. Then,
- 4:37Speaker 2: in an instant, Ezekiel was thrown out into the Spirit
- 4:41Speaker 2: of God. The earth around him spun. Ezekiel fell face
- 4:45Speaker 2: down and looked up. He was no longer in the
- 4:48Speaker 2: lush fields. Ezekiel lifted his eyes to see a blighted valley.
- 4:53Speaker 2: The earth was coarse and black, and the sky was
- 4:57Speaker 2: dim with smog and soot. Ezekiel heard a crack beneath
- 5:01Speaker 2: his hands and feet— bones. Ezekiel sprung to his feet and
- 5:06Speaker 2: saw that the entire valley was laced with dry and
- 5:09Speaker 2: rotting bones. The Spirit of the Lord took Ezekiel by
- 5:13Speaker 2: the shoulder and led him among the valley of dry bones—
- 5:17Speaker 2: so dry that they cracked and ground into a powder
- 5:20Speaker 2: as he stepped on them. A wind blew through the east.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Dust and bone covered the entire land. It was a
- 5:27Speaker 2: bleak and ominous sight. A voice flew in with the
- 5:31Speaker 2: wind and asked, Son of man, can these dry bones live?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Ezekiel looked at the blighted valley. There was no sign
- 5:39Speaker 2: of life for a hundred miles in every direction. O Lord,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Ezekiel responded, Only you know the answer to that. The
- 5:49Speaker 2: wind blew against his face. Speak over the bones, Ezekiel,
- 5:53Speaker 2: God said. Speak for me anything. Oh, you dry bones,
- 5:58Speaker 2: hear the word of the Lord. I will breathe life
- 6:02Speaker 2: into you. Your bodies will be covered in sinew, flesh
- 6:05Speaker 2: and skin. I will put my breath in you and
- 6:08Speaker 2: you shall know that I am the Lord. Ezekiel nodded
- 6:14Speaker 2: and looked upon the desolation. He lifted his voice to
- 6:17Speaker 2: the dry bones and spoke the Lord's words to them.
- 6:21Speaker 2: As he spoke, the wind picked up as if the
- 6:23Speaker 2: breath of God was flowing through the valley. The wind
- 6:26Speaker 2: whistled and the sound of rattling filled the atmosphere. Ezekiel
- 6:30Speaker 2: watched as the bones rolled across the valley to find
- 6:33Speaker 2: one another and come together. Bone found bone and skeletons
- 6:38Speaker 2: were made whole. Sinew wrapped around the dry and blighted
- 6:42Speaker 2: bones and muscles began to form around the limbs. Skin
- 6:46Speaker 2: covered them, and Ezekiel saw a sea of people lying
- 6:50Speaker 2: lifeless on the ground. There was no life in them,
- 6:53Speaker 2: no breath of God's Spirit. Ezekiel could feel the light
- 6:57Speaker 2: caress of the breeze. In it he heard God speak again, saying,
- 7:02Speaker 2: Prophesy to the breath, Ezekiel. Speak for me and declare
- 7:06Speaker 2: the four winds of God to breathe life into the dead.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Ezekiel was quivering. His heart could barely contain what he
- 7:14Speaker 2: was experiencing. At first, Ezekiel said nothing. He struggled with
- 7:19Speaker 2: the words as he stared upon the valley of lifeless bodies.
- 7:23Speaker 2: He regained his composure and prophesied over the dead bodies
- 7:26Speaker 2: with the words of God. And in that instant, the
- 7:30Speaker 2: wind howled from every direction. The breath of God's Spirit.
- 7:35Speaker 3: The Ruach.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The Numa. The same breath that breathed life into mankind
- 7:41Speaker 2: blew mightily through the valley. Ironically, Ezekiel was breathless. He
- 7:46Speaker 2: watched as life was breathed into the dead bodies. He
- 7:49Speaker 2: watched them rise from the ground and stand to their feet.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Soon the bodies were covered in armor, and a vast
- 7:56Speaker 2: army stood before Ezekiel. It was a magnificent sight. The
- 8:01Speaker 2: prophet fell to his knees, beholding the army of living bones.
- 8:05Speaker 2: These bones are the house of Israel, my children, God
- 8:09Speaker 2: said to Ezekiel. They believe their hope is lost, just
- 8:12Speaker 2: like these dry bones. You must tell them that I
- 8:15Speaker 2: am able to open their graves and raise them to
- 8:18Speaker 2: new life. I shall put my spirit in them, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: they shall truly live. They shall know that I am
- 8:24Speaker 2: their God, and I am the author of life. Ezekiel
- 8:29Speaker 2: was still on his knees, trembling at the voice of
- 8:32Speaker 2: the Lord. His presence was comforting, yet terrifying, strong, yet gentle.
- 8:37Speaker 2: He hung on every word spoken to him. Take two
- 8:41Speaker 2: sticks and write on them, God commanded. The prophet grabbed
- 8:44Speaker 2: two fallen branches about the size of his arm and
- 8:47Speaker 2: began to carve out the words of the Lord. Behold,
- 8:51Speaker 2: I am going to take the branch of Judah and
- 8:54Speaker 2: the branch of Israel and make them one again. I
- 8:57Speaker 2: will gather them and make them a single nation. They
- 9:00Speaker 2: will not fall again into idolatry, for I will cleanse
- 9:04Speaker 2: them of all unrighteousness. Ezekiel marveled at the words of God.
- 9:10Speaker 2: The thought of the two nations once again coming together
- 9:13Speaker 2: seemed too good to be true. It was a dream
- 9:16Speaker 2: come true. But who would lead such a nation? None
- 9:20Speaker 2: had been successful since the reign of David. The Lord
- 9:24Speaker 2: spoke again, saying, A son of David will be king
- 9:27Speaker 2: over the one nation. I will make a covenant with them.
- 9:31Speaker 2: They will sit in my presence, and we will be
- 9:33Speaker 2: close once again. I will shepherd them, and all the
- 9:36Speaker 2: nations shall be blessed because of them. This God spoke
- 9:40Speaker 2: concerning the coming king, the great hero that all heroes
- 9:45Speaker 2: pointed to, the great priest that all priests pointed to,
- 9:49Speaker 2: the great king that all kings pointed to. The son
- 9:53Speaker 2: of David would bring about the true character of God
- 9:57Speaker 2: and bridge the gap between mankind and eternity. its creator.
- 10:01Speaker 2: This hero would be Jesus, the Christ, and the Son
- 10:05Speaker 2: of God.
- 10:10Speaker 3: In today's reading, we're introduced to a new prophet, a
- 10:13Speaker 3: man named Ezekiel. God had spoken through Ezekiel for many years.
- 10:19Speaker 3: warning Judah and calling them back to God. But as
- 10:22Speaker 3: we already know, Judah did not repent and they were defeated,
- 10:26Speaker 3: conquered by the Babylonians. Ezekiel was taken along with his
- 10:31Speaker 3: people into exile. Ezekiel's name means God will strengthen. And
- 10:38Speaker 3: as we will soon discover, God is going to use
- 10:41Speaker 3: Ezekiel to tell his people just that, that their God
- 10:44Speaker 3: will bring strength even to what they believe to be
- 10:47Speaker 3: dead and hopeless. For one day, God's Spirit came upon
- 10:51Speaker 3: the prophet, and he was taken up in a vision.
- 10:55Speaker 3: As he looked around, he was in a valley, surrounded
- 10:58Speaker 3: by nothing but dry, dead, lifeless bones. God then asked
- 11:04Speaker 3: him a question that seems ridiculous from a human perspective.
- 11:08Speaker 3: He asked, Can these bones live? Wisely, Ezekiel said, Only
- 11:14Speaker 3: you know that, God. He surely knew that God, who
- 11:17Speaker 3: had made man out of nothing but dirt and breath,
- 11:20Speaker 3: could do anything he will, bringing life even to bones.
- 11:25Speaker 3: The Lord then commanded Ezekiel to speak his word over
- 11:28Speaker 3: the bones. And as he did, these dry, brittle bones
- 11:32Speaker 3: began to come together with muscles and tendons and flesh. Suddenly,
- 11:37Speaker 3: the valley was covered with not bones but human bodies,
- 11:40Speaker 3: full of flesh, yet there was no sign of life.
- 11:44Speaker 3: We have to think a vision of thousands of human
- 11:47Speaker 3: bones seemed disturbing enough, but these lifeless bodies all around
- 11:52Speaker 3: would have been a terrifying sight. But God wasn't done yet.
- 11:56Speaker 3: He told Ezekiel to speak to the four winds, calling
- 11:59Speaker 3: them to fill these lifeless bodies. This was no mere wind.
- 12:04Speaker 3: This was the breath of God, the powerful breath of
- 12:08Speaker 3: the Almighty, the same breath that filled Adam's lungs and
- 12:11Speaker 3: sprung him to life in the gardens. It was the ruach,
- 12:16Speaker 3: the wind God sent over the waters to make them
- 12:18Speaker 3: recede after the flood. There was great power in the
- 12:22Speaker 3: breath of God. And as Ezekiel prophesied to the winds,
- 12:26Speaker 3: they came and filled the bodies with life. It is
- 12:29Speaker 3: an amazing reminder of God's life-giving power. And this was
- 12:34Speaker 3: the message God wanted Ezekiel to give to his people.
- 12:37Speaker 3: The once lifeless bodies rose from the ground and stood
- 12:40Speaker 3: before him an awesome army of warriors. Then God spoke,
- 12:44Speaker 3: and we read in Ezekiel 37, verse 11, 12, and 13,
- 12:49Speaker 3: these words. Son of man, these bones are the people
- 12:53Speaker 3: of Israel. They say our bones are dried up and
- 12:56Speaker 3: our hope is gone. We are cut off. Therefore prophesy
- 13:00Speaker 3: and say to them, this is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 13:04Speaker 3: My people, I am going to open your graves and
- 13:07Speaker 3: bring you up from them. I will bring you back
- 13:09Speaker 3: to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will
- 13:12Speaker 3: know that I am the Lord. When I open your
- 13:14Speaker 3: graves and bring you up from them, despite the disobedience
- 13:19Speaker 3: of God's people, their lack of faithfulness, God would not
- 13:24Speaker 3: leave them in a hopeless situation. God has a plan,
- 13:28Speaker 3: an eternal plan for Israel. Though they could only see
- 13:31Speaker 3: despair and darkness and death in their exile, God was
- 13:34Speaker 3: giving them a message of hope. This same God of
- 13:38Speaker 3: hope is alive and working today. Even in your most
- 13:42Speaker 3: hopeless situation, where nothing good seems possible, where there is
- 13:47Speaker 3: only dry bones and death, God promises hope. And it
- 13:52Speaker 3: is the core, the same hope that he was announcing
- 13:55Speaker 3: to his people. At its core, this is the hope
- 13:59Speaker 3: that God was giving to his people through Ezekiel, and
- 14:02Speaker 3: it is the hope that he promises us today through
- 14:05Speaker 3: our Lord Jesus Christ. And here was the promise to
- 14:08Speaker 3: God's people. Even though they could not fully understand it,
- 14:13Speaker 3: God was promising that he would restore the nation to life.
- 14:17Speaker 3: They would be restored to their homeland. And the two nations,
- 14:21Speaker 3: Judah and Israel, God was going to bring them under
- 14:24Speaker 3: one king. Dear God, we pray for revival in our nation,
- 14:28Speaker 3: spiritual awakening around the world. May you take what is
- 14:32Speaker 3: dead and bring it to life. Revive your church, O God.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Bring your people back to life. May we stand and
- 14:39Speaker 3: not be silent with the word of God and the
- 14:41Speaker 3: testimony of Jesus. May we live under the banner and
- 14:45Speaker 3: the power and in the breath of God's spirit, Christ
- 14:48Speaker 3: the King. Dear God, thank you that even in the
- 14:52Speaker 3: most desperate and desolate circumstances, when death is all around,
- 14:57Speaker 3: you are still in control and you can bring life
- 15:00Speaker 3: out of death. You did that in the resurrection through
- 15:03Speaker 3: Jesus our Lord. And it is in his name that
- 15:06Speaker 3: we pray. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's Bible
