Oak Island mourns the passing of beloved community leader Sheila Mansfield Bell, who died at 65 after a lifetime of service. A longtime resident since 1982, she retired from her role as tax collector in 2014 before joining the Town Council, where she helped craft key initiatives including the Beach and Inlet Management Plan, the Comprehensive Land Use Plan, and the Citizens Academy. Flags will fly at half-staff this week in her honor, with a memorial service set for Friday at 3 PM at Peacock-Newnam and White Funeral Home.
