- 0:01Today we will learn how to put on our socks.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1140 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Alan and Linda's Wern.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You want to skip ahead to the
- 0:22big moment, But upgraded thinking knows the way you do
- 0:24anything is the way you do everything.
- 0:27Here's the story. Kareem Abdul Jabbar arrived at
- 0:31UCLA as a freshman, one of the most gifted players in the
- 0:34country. His first lesson from John
- 0:37Wooden, arguably the greatest coach in the history of college
- 0:39basketball, was not a play or a drill.
- 0:42It was how to put on his socks. Kareem remembers the new players
- 0:47exchanging worried glances. Then Wooden showed them.
- 0:50Pulled the sock tight. Work it around the toe and the
- 0:53heel. Smooth out every wrinkle,
- 0:56because a wrinkle causes a blister, and a blister puts you
- 0:58on the bench, and a player on the bench loses games.
- 1:01To make the point, Wooden quoted Benjamin Franklin.
- 1:04For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
- 1:06For one of a shoe, the horse was lost, and for one of a horse,
- 1:09the rider was lost. Imagine you came to prove you
- 1:13were special, and you're sat down and taught to put on socks.
- 1:17But the sock was never the point.
- 1:19It was a test whether a man would bring his full attention
- 1:22to the invisible work that no one applauds, Nobody cheers a
- 1:25smooth sock. But over a season, 100 neglected
- 1:29details decides a championship. Another player, Bill Walton,
- 1:34later put it. Actually, the first thing you're
- 1:36taught is how to put on your socks.
- 1:37It was so drilled into you, it became the obvious place.
- 1:40Any lesson started Spin. Natter, who backed up Walton and
- 1:44went on to a long pro career, says he still thinks of Coach
- 1:47Wooden every single morning when he puts on his socks 50 years
- 1:52later. It's not the championships that
- 1:53come to mind every day. It's the socks.
- 1:57Because Natter understood what most people never do.
- 1:59You never leave a foundation once you believe the way you do
- 2:03anything is the way you do everything.
- 2:05You can't fake excellence in one room and get sloppy in another.
- 2:09The better story to tell yourself is smooth the sock, tie
- 2:13the lace, win the inch, then win the race.
- 2:17You're always training a standard.
- 2:20The only question is which one? Kevin Kelly and excellent advice
- 2:24for a living, says quote. Habit is far more dependable
- 2:28than inspiration. Make progress by making habits.
- 2:31In quote, this ties back to wooden teaching elite athletes
- 2:37to put on socks correctly sounds absurd until you realize it's
- 2:41about installing automatic standards that prevent avoidable
- 2:45failure. Don't depend on inspiration.
- 2:48Install habits. I mentioned wooden in a similar
- 2:53lesson in message 8:30 that would complement this story
- 2:56well. Now tell me a story of the small
- 2:59things done well to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
