- 1:24So, just wanted to let you know that
- 1:26announcement.
- 1:26For the next few episodes, we'll have a
- 1:29little announcement like this tucked into the episode
- 1:32and then in the future that'll just be
- 1:34part of our outro.
- 1:35So thanks so much and here's today's podcast.
- 1:40I want you to think about seeing a
- 1:43toddler become a toddler, seeing a baby learn
- 1:46to walk.
- 1:48If you've ever had a chance to do
- 1:49this, it really blows your mind to watch
- 1:52a baby take its first steps.
- 1:53This happened to me when my cousin Joseph
- 1:57was one year old.
- 1:58So I was out there in Seattle where
- 2:00he grew up and we were hanging out
- 2:02kind of outside of church because he was
- 2:03a little too squirmy for church and then
- 2:06he walked.
- 2:08He like took his hand off of like
- 2:09the sofa and walked a couple steps straight
- 2:12toward me and it blew my mind.
- 2:14It was amazing.
- 2:15Now, Joseph is a young man.
- 2:17He's a computer whiz.
- 2:18He makes lots more money than I do.
- 2:20He has a whole life as part of
- 2:22a church plant in Seattle.
- 2:23He's doing amazing things.
- 2:25If he's listening to this, he's probably a
- 2:26little bit embarrassed.
- 2:28But that was a cool moment to see
- 2:31Joseph take those first steps.
- 2:34But those were not his last steps, right?
- 2:35Those were just the beginning, itty bitty steps.
- 2:38And he has walked and run and moved
- 2:40for a couple of decades since that moment.
- 2:43And that's really exciting.
- 2:44It's a good thing for the world to
- 2:45have a Joseph who can walk around in
- 2:47it.
- 2:48Okay, in this series, we've been talking about
- 2:51what the good news is.
- 2:53We've been talking about how we can share
- 2:54the good news.
- 2:55We've been talking about this idea of the
- 2:56five thresholds from InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and from
- 2:59Don Everts and Doug Shoup.
- 3:01Their book, I once was lost from 2008.
- 3:04And we've finally gotten to the fifth threshold,
- 3:07entering the kingdom.
- 3:09Doug and Don have a great little line
- 3:10about this in their book.
- 3:12So I just want to cite the Bible
- 3:13passage that they use, which is from Matthew
- 3:1613, and then their comments about it.
- 3:19So Matthew 13, starting in verse 44.
- 3:45When our friends want into the kingdom, when
- 3:48they have sought and sought and see in
- 3:50Jesus what they have always been looking for,
- 3:52they have a choice.
- 3:54Sell all and get it or walk away.
- 3:57To sell all is threshold five.
- 4:01Now it goes without saying, for those of
- 4:03us who believe in Jesus, that it is
- 4:04really exciting when somebody hits threshold five.
- 4:07When somebody crosses the line, when somebody commits
- 4:09to Jesus and becomes his disciple, when somebody
- 4:12puts their faith in him and begins to
- 4:15live life in him and with him, what
- 4:18could be more exciting than that?
- 4:20It's hard to imagine.
- 4:21But just like there's been this process leading
- 4:24up to this moment in our friends' lives,
- 4:28there's also a process after this moment.
- 4:31And this can be confusing, especially for those
- 4:33of us who might have been raised in
- 4:34a certain Christian subculture, where it's like this
- 4:36moment was sometimes treated as the only moment
- 4:38that mattered.
- 4:39You just got to get somebody to cross
- 4:41the line, and then they're saved.
- 4:44And everything's fine after that.
- 4:47Now, that's problematic for a number of reasons,
- 4:49not least of which it's not what the
- 4:50Bible teaches, right?
- 4:51We talked about what does it mean to
- 4:52be saved as we actually look at the
- 4:54teaching of Jesus, and it has all these
- 4:56different dimensions, right?
- 4:57We're looking at both the cross, Jesus' death
- 4:59and resurrection, and the kingdom, the things that
- 5:01God is doing in the world.
- 5:02And when we put our faith in Jesus,
- 5:04it's because of his death and resurrection that
- 5:06we can be forgiven of our sins and
- 5:08enter into life in the kingdom of God.
- 5:10So following Jesus, putting our faith in Jesus
- 5:12always leads to life change.
- 5:14It leads to something holistic, not just a
- 5:16one-off prayer or ceremony or moment.
- 5:20Also, there's different facets of the good news.
- 5:23So we looked at how the good news
- 5:24is knowledge of God, communion with God, eternal
- 5:28life, that's Jesus' own definition for eternal life,
- 5:30is knowing God and knowing Jesus whom God
- 5:33has sent.
- 5:33We've looked at how healing is part of
- 5:36salvation, but even the word to heal and
- 5:38to save are similar, where they show up
- 5:40in the passages that describe the ministry of
- 5:42Jesus.
- 5:43We've looked at how becoming a follower of
- 5:45Jesus is not distinct from the process of
- 5:48salvation.
- 5:49It's naturally connected to it.
- 5:51And I just want to read one more
- 5:52quote from Dallas Willard to help us clarify
- 5:54this idea.
- 5:55He was the philosopher, if you haven't heard
- 5:57me quote him all the time before, we
- 5:58quoted at the beginning of this series about
- 6:00barcode Christianity, this idea that you can somehow
- 6:03have some sort of scanning process that's transactional,
- 6:06that takes care of what happens when people
- 6:07die, but has no connection to the kind
- 6:09of human being they're becoming and how that's
- 6:11like this pathetic two dimensional version of Christianity
- 6:14that has nothing to do with what Jesus
- 6:15taught.
- 6:17Dallas more positively puts it like this.
- 6:19This is in his article, spiritual formation as
- 6:22a natural part of salvation, one who really
- 6:26understands who Jesus is, sees their own situation
- 6:29in a realistic light and wants to take
- 6:31measures to remedy their condition by staying as
- 6:35close to Jesus as possible.
- 6:37Discipleship is a natural part of confidence in
- 6:40Jesus as he really is.
- 6:43And that just makes sense.
- 6:44And that just straightforward.
- 6:45Like, yeah, if you really think that Jesus
- 6:47knows what life is about and you really
- 6:49think that your life has some issues and
- 6:51you need some help, then you want to
- 6:52just get close to Jesus and stay close
- 6:54to Jesus in every aspect of your life
- 6:56as much as you can.
- 6:57That's that's what faith is all about.
- 6:59So it's this whole life discipleship becoming a
- 7:03follower of Jesus.
- 7:04So this moment, this moment is like a
- 7:06like a snapshot moment, but it's not the
- 7:08whole story.
- 7:09It's like that moment when Joseph took his
- 7:11first steps towards me in that church lobby
- 7:13in Seattle, but his whole life has unfolded
- 7:17from that moment.
- 7:18It's not like those steps in particular are
- 7:19the steps that count most, it's that he's
- 7:22entering a way of life that he's going
- 7:24to be able to use all over the
- 7:26place in all sorts of different ways.
- 7:28So we don't want to undersell the moment
- 7:30of somebody entering the kingdom because they're entering
- 7:32the kingdom.
- 7:33Praise the Lord.
- 7:33We also don't want to oversell that moment
- 7:36as opposed to the entirety of their life.
- 7:39The reason that moment is so exciting is
- 7:40because it's the first moment of many more
- 7:43to come.
- 7:45Earlier, we talked about C.S. Lewis's experience
- 7:47of feeling like he was a lobster or
- 7:49wearing a suit of armor and or like
- 7:51he was a snowman that was starting to
- 7:52melt and he kind of had this choice.
- 7:54Do I open myself or do I stay
- 7:56closed?
- 7:57And by the time somebody gets to this
- 7:59stage, they've already been open, right?
- 8:01They've already been seeking, they've already been vulnerable.
- 8:02They've been connecting questions and experiences and feelings.
- 8:07This is the moment when they not only
- 8:09open the door, but walk through the door.
- 8:13And so I want to look at just
- 8:14a couple of different images from Christian tradition
- 8:17that I think are really helpful for thinking
- 8:19about what does it mean to walk through
- 8:20the door?
- 8:21So one of these comes from the hymn
- 8:24writer Charles Wesley, brother of the theologian and
- 8:27preacher John Wesley.
- 8:29And this was the hymn that he wrote
- 8:30to describe his own conversion experience.
- 8:33So this moment for him when things suddenly
- 8:35became real and it's called An Can It
- 8:38Be and I'll just read one stanza of
- 8:40it.
- 8:41Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in
- 8:44sin and nature's night.
- 8:47Okay, pause there.
- 8:48So he's saying that he's imprisoned.
- 8:50His spirit is imprisoned.
- 8:51He as a human being is shackled by
- 8:54sin and then also nature's night.
- 8:57So there's also just like human weakness, human
- 8:59frailty as part of his experience too, as
- 9:01it is for all of us.
- 9:01He continues, thine eye diffused a quickening ray.
- 9:07Okay, what does that mean?
- 9:08Quickening means making alive, like that old phrase
- 9:11like getting cut to the quick, that means
- 9:12cutting to where the life is in something,
- 9:15in ray, a ray of light.
- 9:16So God's eye diffused a quickening ray, something
- 9:22from the presence of God, the source of
- 9:24life, came into Charles's life like light out
- 9:28of God's eye.
- 9:29And that made him come alive.
- 9:31He continues, I woke the dungeon, flamed with
- 9:35light.
- 9:36My chains fell off.
- 9:38My heart was free.
- 9:40I rose, went forth and followed thee.
- 9:44Let me read the whole thing without interrupting
- 9:45it this time.
- 9:46Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in
- 9:49sin and nature's night.
- 9:52Thine eye diffused a quickening ray.
- 9:54I woke the dungeon, flamed with light.
- 9:57My chains fell off.
- 9:59My heart was free.
- 10:00I rose, went forth and followed thee.
- 10:03This is so clear.
- 10:05When you're in bondage and you get freed,
- 10:08then you can leave the dungeon.
- 10:09You can walk into life.
- 10:11You can take those first steps of Christian
- 10:13freedom in the Lord.
- 10:14So again, if a conversion is genuine, somebody
- 10:17is placing their confidence in Jesus, they're walking
- 10:19into a life of following him for the
- 10:21rest of their life.
- 10:23That's how it works.
- 10:24That's the natural result of placing your confidence
- 10:27in Jesus.
- 10:28My chains fell off.
- 10:31My heart was free.
- 10:32I rose, went forth and followed thee.
- 10:35So when somebody is entering the kingdom, when
- 10:36they're putting their faith in Jesus, they're beginning
- 10:38a whole life with Jesus.
- 10:42One of Dallas's favorite phrases was salvation is
- 10:44a life.
- 10:45I don't know how to say it better
- 10:46than that.
- 10:47Salvation is a life.
- 10:50Okay.
- 10:50Another image, also an older one.
- 10:52This comes from the writer, John Bunyan.
- 10:55He was a Puritan.
- 10:57I'm an Anglican.
- 10:58So like my people are the bad guy
- 10:59in the John Bunyan story that were the
- 11:01ones that threw him in prison.
- 11:03Christianity and Christian traditions are messy and complicated.
- 11:06But John Bunyan, he wrote this book called
- 11:08The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the best selling
- 11:11books of all time.
- 11:12And I got to see and read a
- 11:15children's version of it, an illustrated version, when
- 11:18I was a little kid called Dangerous Journey.
- 11:19And if I can, I'll try and link
- 11:20from our website resource to the Dangerous Journey
- 11:23book so you can see the visuals.
- 11:25Because the main character of this book is
- 11:27someone named Christian, and it's kind of a
- 11:30prophetic name because he's going to become a
- 11:31Christian later.
- 11:32Let me read how he's described in the
- 11:34very opening lines of the book.
- 11:37I saw a man clothed with rags, standing
- 11:39in a certain place, with his face from
- 11:42his own house, a book in his hand,
- 11:44and a great burden upon his back.
- 11:48I looked and saw him open the book
- 11:49and read therein, and as he read, he
- 11:52wept and trembled, and not being able any
- 11:55longer to contain, he break out with a
- 11:58lamentable cry saying, what shall I do?
- 12:02I hear this incredible pathos in this image,
- 12:04and the image that I saw in the
- 12:06illustration, the burden that's on Christian's back, looks
- 12:10like it weighs about twice as much as
- 12:11he does.
- 12:12It's this lumpy thing tied on with strings,
- 12:15dirty, soiled, and just looks awful, something that
- 12:19would bend down on him constantly as an
- 12:23irremovable weight from his shoulders.
- 12:26And Christian has this journey throughout his walk
- 12:31toward faith in Jesus even before he has
- 12:34his conversion experience.
- 12:35Just like we've talked about, people have these
- 12:37different thresholds they go through.
- 12:38Christian has these different things that he's exploring
- 12:40on the way to faith, but then eventually
- 12:42he comes to this point where he sees
- 12:44a cross.
- 12:46So let me read that little section of
- 12:47the book as well.
- 12:50Now I saw in my dream that the
- 12:52highway up which Christian was to go was
- 12:54fenced on either side with a wall, and
- 12:56that wall was called salvation.
- 12:59Up this way, therefore, did burden the Christian
- 13:00run, but not without great difficulty because of
- 13:04the load on his back.
- 13:05He ran thus till he came at a
- 13:07place somewhat ascending, and upon that place stood
- 13:10a cross, and a little below in the
- 13:12bottom, a sepulcher.
- 13:14So I saw in my dream that just
- 13:16as Christian came up with the cross, his
- 13:19burden loosed from off his shoulders and fell
- 13:21from off his back, and began to tumble,
- 13:24and so continued to do till it came
- 13:26to the mouth of the sepulcher, where it
- 13:28fell in, and I saw it no more.
- 13:30Then was Christian glad and lightsome, and said
- 13:34with a merry heart, he hath given me
- 13:36rest by his sorrow and life by his
- 13:38death.
- 13:39Then he stood still a while to look
- 13:40and wonder, for it was very surprising to
- 13:43him that the sight of the cross should
- 13:45thus ease him of his burden.
- 13:48He looked therefore and looked again, even till
- 13:50the springs that were in his head sent
- 13:52the waters down his cheeks.
- 13:55So you've got these two images of Christian,
- 13:56one where he has his burden and he's
- 13:58weeping, and he's asking, what shall I do?
- 14:01What must I do?
- 14:03He doesn't use this exact phrase, but what
- 14:04he's asking is, how can I be saved?
- 14:06And then you have Christian weeping for joy
- 14:08at the foot of the cross, because upon
- 14:10seeing the cross, his burden rolls off his
- 14:13shoulders and goes into the tomb, never to
- 14:15be heard from again.
- 14:16The tomb where Christ was buried, he has
- 14:18received forgiveness of his sins.
- 14:21But this moment, even though there's several steps
- 14:24that happened before this moment, this moment is
- 14:26still towards the beginning of the book, like
- 14:28it's maybe only 20% of the way
- 14:30into the book, if that, because Christian then
- 14:32has to live out that life for the
- 14:34rest of his journey.
- 14:35And it is a dangerous and a perilous
- 14:37journey, but he's walking it without that burden
- 14:39now.
- 14:40He's walking it with that gladsome lightness of
- 14:43heart and his merry heart as he receives
- 14:45the forgiveness and the power of God.
- 14:48This is what happens for our friends when
- 14:51they put their faith in Jesus, that burden
- 14:53of sin, of guilt, of responsibility for living
- 14:58life that they can't measure up to.
- 15:01That goes into Christ's grave, never to be
- 15:04heard from again.
- 15:05And they're given what they need to live
- 15:07life with Jesus, to walk out a journey
- 15:10with him for the rest of their life.
- 15:13This is such an exciting and a beautiful
- 15:15moment for our friends.
- 15:17The question is, how do we know when
- 15:20our friend is at that point and what
- 15:22can we do to help them?
- 15:24Well, the first thing to say is we
- 15:25may not know when this moment happens for
- 15:27our friend.
- 15:28Our friend may not even know when this
- 15:30moment happens for our friend, because it's a
- 15:32moment in the heart, right?
- 15:34It's a gradual process to get to this
- 15:36point for many people.
- 15:37And so they may not be able to
- 15:38name, like, when was the moment when I
- 15:40really started believing in Jesus?
- 15:42Because sometimes people are like, they're in Christian
- 15:44community and they're reading the Bible and they're
- 15:45praying and they're trying to discern what it
- 15:47means to follow Jesus.
- 15:48And then suddenly they realize, like, oh, this
- 15:50is real for me.
- 15:51And they can't point to it like a
- 15:52specific moment when it became real.
- 15:54This is especially common among children, among people
- 15:56who were raised in the faith.
- 15:58But for adults, it's more common to have
- 16:00a moment where it's like there was a
- 16:01crisis moment when I had to resolve, when
- 16:03I had to commit.
- 16:05And that's a moment that we can help
- 16:06with.
- 16:07Now, again, there's still a mystery there.
- 16:08Only God can see the heart.
- 16:09So even if we think that we've discerned
- 16:12that moment with our friend or a friend
- 16:13thinks they've discerned that moment and we help
- 16:15them make or verbalize a kind of commitment.
- 16:17God knows what's going on in their heart.
- 16:19Maybe really they cross that line a month
- 16:21earlier and they just haven't had a chance
- 16:22to verbalize it.
- 16:23Maybe they're verbalizing it right now, but really
- 16:25they haven't counted the cost and they haven't
- 16:27really squared with the demands of Jesus.
- 16:29That'll become evident as the next week's unfold
- 16:32to see if they really continue to walk
- 16:34with Jesus or not.
- 16:37But just because we can't see exactly when
- 16:39the moment of genuine faith happens for someone
- 16:41doesn't mean that we shouldn't help shepherd and
- 16:43guide people toward that kind of faith.
- 16:46We can help here in a really direct
- 16:48way.
- 16:49So one way to phrase this that I
- 16:51find really helpful is saying yes to Jesus.
- 16:54Just like Mary, we talked about her as
- 16:56that image, that icon of openness to God
- 16:59where she says, let it be to me,
- 17:01as you have said, we want somebody else
- 17:04to have that posture of just saying yes
- 17:06to Jesus, being open, being vulnerable to Jesus
- 17:09and yes, what you want, Lord, that's what
- 17:12I want.
- 17:12And so sometimes that's even in the back
- 17:15of my mind, what I'm wondering is, is
- 17:18this person ready to say yes to Jesus?
- 17:21Now, that's not something that we want to
- 17:23pressure.
- 17:24Again, we want to help people count the
- 17:25cost.
- 17:25We want to give people reasons not to
- 17:27follow Jesus so that if they do, it's
- 17:29actually genuine, but it is something we can
- 17:32discern and sometimes asking questions can help us
- 17:35discern with people.
- 17:37So you can ask your friend questions like,
- 17:39what would it take for you to say
- 17:40yes to Jesus, or are you ready to
- 17:43say yes to Jesus?
- 17:45We can reflect back to them things that
- 17:46we've heard them saying to us.
- 17:47So like, hey, like, as we're reading this
- 17:50Bible passage together and you talk about like
- 17:52what Jesus can do, it sounds like you're
- 17:54saying that you kind of want that in
- 17:56your life.
- 17:56Like, are you ready to say yes to
- 17:57Jesus in that way?
- 17:59So again, not boilerplate rooted in your actual
- 18:02friendship, rooted in the things that are actually
- 18:03unfolding to you as you talk with them.
- 18:08Okay, then they may say yes or no,
- 18:11right?
- 18:11They might say like, no, no, no, I'm
- 18:12not ready for that.
- 18:13I had this happen with a friend recently,
- 18:14right?
- 18:15I kind of challenged her.
- 18:17I was like, are you ready to do
- 18:20this?
- 18:20And she's like, I'm not.
- 18:21No, no, I'm not like, okay, great.
- 18:24That's a great self-awareness, right?
- 18:25No pressure.
- 18:26Maybe, maybe I'll ask again sometime in the
- 18:28future.
- 18:31But they may also say yes.
- 18:33They may say like, yes, I'm ready.
- 18:34I want to do this.
- 18:35And if somebody's saying yes, they usually need
- 18:36some help.
- 18:37So you can guide them in that moment.
- 18:41So you might say something like, hey, if
- 18:43you're ready to say yes to Jesus, that's
- 18:44something you can commit to in prayer right
- 18:46now.
- 18:47Can I guide you in that?
- 18:49Is it okay if I put a hand
- 18:50on your shoulder while we pray?
- 18:52Now, there's nothing magical about prayer, right?
- 18:54The thing is the attitude of the heart.
- 18:56When somebody puts their faith in Jesus, that
- 18:58means their heart is now trusting him, they're
- 19:00placing their confidence in him.
- 19:01They don't have to pray any special kind
- 19:03of prayer for that to be real, but
- 19:04praying helps us name that spiritual reality, helps
- 19:07us confess it out loud.
- 19:09So then you pray and you can guide
- 19:11them through a prayer that expresses a faith
- 19:15commitment to Jesus.
- 19:16I like the model given by Nikki Gumbel,
- 19:19who's the pioneer of the Alpha movement, because
- 19:21he has just three ingredients, makes it easy
- 19:23to remember, sorry, thank you, please.
- 19:26So you can pray and then ask the
- 19:28person to pray after you, or you can
- 19:30pray and ask them to pray quietly in
- 19:32their heart if they're more comfortable with that.
- 19:34Or you can explain the model of sorry,
- 19:37thank you, please, and then invite them to
- 19:38extemporaneously pray.
- 19:41But the prayer might sound like this, Lord
- 19:44Jesus, I am sorry for the things I've
- 19:46done wrong in my life.
- 19:48Please forgive me.
- 19:50I now turn from everything that I know
- 19:52is wrong.
- 19:53Thank you that you died on the cross
- 19:55for me so that I could be forgiven
- 19:56and set free.
- 19:58Thank you that you offer me forgiveness and
- 20:00the gift of your spirit.
- 20:02I now receive that gift.
- 20:04Please come into my life by your Holy
- 20:06Spirit to be with me forever.
- 20:09Thank you, Lord Jesus.
- 20:11Amen.
- 20:13Sorry, thank you, please.
- 20:16This is simple.
- 20:17It covers the basics of repenting of sin.
- 20:20That's the sorry, the importance of Jesus' death
- 20:22and resurrection.
- 20:23That's the thank you.
- 20:25And then entering into life in the kingdom
- 20:26of God by the power of the Holy
- 20:28Spirit.
- 20:28That's the please.
- 20:30So we're keeping the kingdom and the cross
- 20:31together.
- 20:32We're inviting people to repent of their sins.
- 20:34We're inviting them to name that they're placing
- 20:35their faith in Jesus.
- 20:36This is all good theology.
- 20:38It's good stuff.
- 20:39It's not the only way to do it,
- 20:40but it's a helpful way to do it.
- 20:42Sorry, thank you, please.
- 20:44And then if that person prays that prayer
- 20:46right with you out loud in their own
- 20:48words or not, then you want to follow
- 20:52up.
- 20:52You want to rejoice and encourage them.
- 20:54And now hopefully you don't need to like
- 20:55have a checklist in your mind reminding you
- 20:57to rejoice.
- 20:58You just have an authentic expression of joy
- 20:59in that moment that this person is crossing
- 21:01that line and entering the kingdom of God.
- 21:04Jesus taught that there was more rejoicing in
- 21:06heaven over one sinner who repents than over
- 21:0999 righteous people who need no repenting.
- 21:12And so I mean, in this kind of
- 21:13tongue in cheek, because there are no righteous
- 21:14people that need no repenting besides Jesus and
- 21:17maybe Mary if our Catholic brothers and sisters
- 21:19are right about that.
- 21:20But the point is God is really excited
- 21:23when somebody repents of their sins, right?
- 21:26That is an exclamation point moment in the
- 21:28heavenlies because it's the beginning of this new
- 21:31life with God.
- 21:32And that new life is now what that
- 21:33person needs help continuing to be shepherded into.
- 21:37Now, hopefully they are already connected to a
- 21:40community of faith, right?
- 21:41Most people, they have some connection to community
- 21:43before this moment happens.
- 21:45But if for any reason, somehow you've only
- 21:47connected with them one on one and they've
- 21:49gotten to this point and they haven't been
- 21:50part of community, for sure people need community
- 21:53to help them grow into this life with
- 21:56God.
- 21:56We are not saved as individual people.
- 21:59We, the body of Christ are saved in
- 22:01union with each other as we come into
- 22:03union with God too.
- 22:05And so you can invite them to come
- 22:07to your faith community if for some reason
- 22:09that's logistically impossible.
- 22:10Like you know them from work and this
- 22:13all happened through remote Zoom calls or something,
- 22:15right?
- 22:15You can help them find a faith community
- 22:17near them so that they can begin taking
- 22:19these steps if you have some sort of
- 22:24regular small group that you're part of or
- 22:25a Bible study that you're part of.
- 22:27It's great to involve them in that.
- 22:29And if you don't, and even if you
- 22:31do, it's also great to meet with them
- 22:32one on one if possible.
- 22:34Now, if you've already been meeting with them
- 22:36one on one, you can just kind of
- 22:37keep doing that.
- 22:38So me and my friend Chris, we're both
- 22:40named Chris.
- 22:40It's really fun when we show up at
- 22:42events together and stuff like hi, Chris and
- 22:44Chris.
- 22:45But this was how it worked for me
- 22:46and him.
- 22:46We had been meeting together for like six
- 22:47months, like once a week, maybe every couple
- 22:50of weeks, one on one.
- 22:52And then when he came to faith, we
- 22:53just kept doing it, right?
- 22:54It's just now we're reading the Bible together
- 22:56and he's a disciple instead of considering becoming
- 22:59a disciple.
- 23:00So there may be a natural rhythm that's
- 23:01already there.
- 23:02But if it's been more ad hoc, now's
- 23:04a good time to get a little bit
- 23:05more intentional because a new believer is a
- 23:07fragile believer, right?
- 23:08There's going to be lots of questions, lots
- 23:10of changes coming in their life as they
- 23:11try and live out the teachings of Jesus.
- 23:13So they need some support and some help
- 23:15and some guidance.
- 23:16If that's something you're not sure how to
- 23:17do, you can get help from people who
- 23:19can shepherd you, maybe a pastor at your
- 23:21church or other people.
- 23:23There's great resources available for young believers on
- 23:27the InterVarsity website, for example, and I will
- 23:29include links to those in our related web
- 23:32materials for this podcast.
- 23:35But if you have the privilege, the honor
- 23:37of being next to someone, shoulder to shoulder
- 23:39with someone when they make their confession of
- 23:42faith, the joy is so real at the
- 23:47same time.
- 23:49This is not meant to be a tallying
- 23:52things up, getting notches in your belt sort
- 23:54of thing.
- 23:55If you have never had this experience, that
- 23:57does not make you a bad Christian.
- 23:59That doesn't even make you a bad evangelist.
- 24:01Right?
- 24:01One of my prayers is that everybody will
- 24:03get to have this experience because of the
- 24:05joy of it.
- 24:06But the reality is there were a lot
- 24:08of people in my cousin Joseph's life, namely
- 24:10my aunt and uncle, his parents and his
- 24:12older sisters, he's the youngest of four, who
- 24:14did a lot more than I did to
- 24:16help him get to the point where he
- 24:17could take those first few steps.
- 24:18I just happened to be sitting in the
- 24:19right chair when it happened.
- 24:21And we might be in that situation as
- 24:23well.
- 24:23We might be the person who gets to
- 24:25joyfully pray with somebody as they enter the
- 24:27kingdom, as they confess their faith in Jesus
- 24:29Christ.
- 24:30Or we might be involved earlier in the
- 24:32process and not get to see that moment.
- 24:34And that's okay.
- 24:35That doesn't mean we're a bad evangelist.
- 24:36Every one of these five stages counts.
- 24:39So if you're just building trust with somebody
- 24:40and that's what you're given to do right
- 24:42now, that counts.
- 24:43If you're just helping somebody be curious, but
- 24:45they're not really personally open, that counts.
- 24:47If you're helping somebody be personally open, but
- 24:49they're not really actively seeking, that counts.
- 24:50If you're helping somebody actively seek, but they
- 24:52haven't made a commitment yet, that counts.
- 24:53And if you get to be there when
- 24:54somebody makes a commitment to Jesus, of course,
- 24:57that counts as well.
- 24:58But it's not about us, right?
- 25:00It's about meeting people where they're at and
- 25:02helping them take that next step, including this
- 25:05most exciting one.
- 25:09Lord Jesus, show us how to walk with
- 25:11our friends into your kingdom, uh, more deeply
- 25:14into your kingdom for us, maybe entering it
- 25:16for the first time for them.
- 25:18Show us how to not pressure, but gently
- 25:21guide and encourage and clarify things for them.
- 25:25Show us how to minister your presence at
- 25:28that moment when people are ready to say
- 25:30yes to you.
- 25:32Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 25:34do our work with you.
- 25:35Amen.
- 25:39Thanks for listening.
