- 0:00Hey there, everybody, it's Jeff. We wanted to let you know we
- 0:02recorded this podcast episode on Wednesday, April tenth, twenty twenty four. By
- 0:07the time you hear this, some things may have changed. You're there,
- 0:09but we hope you enjoy the show. All right, everybody, you're listening
- 0:29to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast
- 0:33show in the world, just about eleven years strong. Right here, I'm
- 0:37Jeff Warren. I'm here at my good buddy Eric Leonard, Eric Man.
- 0:40How you doing unemployed? Is ever? Jeff? Yeah, lad off a
- 0:47few weeks ago. If you haven't listened to the show, yeah, man,
- 0:51it is weird. You you wake up, so we lit all had
- 0:56jobs. You wake up and you're like, oh, I gotta go to
- 0:58work. I remember, I remember, right eight the five. Yeah.
- 1:00But when you don't have that routine, I mean, unless you're a complete
- 1:03maniac, like a gg Allen kind of lunatic, you do start to get
- 1:07a little weird not having a routine, and you kind of you figure out
- 1:12your routine eventually within the confines of not being employed. Yeah, you know,
- 1:17the laundry, kitchen, cleaning, the dog. But just that kind
- 1:21of stuff if you exercise. I haven't done that quite yet. But it's
- 1:23just weird. It's it's a strange time, especially in a man's life at
- 1:29the age of forty seven with two kids in a house, and you try
- 1:32it and then you feel guilty all the time, like if you just kind
- 1:34of sit on the couch and do nothing. That is exactly correct, That
- 1:38is exactly correct. I've only been all right, since I've been ten years
- 1:41old. I've only been unemployed once in my entire life, and I was
- 1:46at the age of I think it was like thirty nine and was for four
- 1:49months until I've found the current job that I have right now. And like
- 1:53you said, there's a guilt associated with it where you're just like walking around
- 1:59doing laundry. You're you know, you're doing the dishes and stuff, and
- 2:02it's stuff that needs to get done, but it's weird to be doing it
- 2:06at ten thirty in the morning. Yeah, and then I always find myself
- 2:09reporting back to my wife. Put it for eight jobs today. Yeah,
- 2:15I'm not just sitting around watching reruns mister Red, Well, that might be
- 2:23my guilty place. No, our topics now, yes, stretch still like
- 2:28all those weird channels like a Comet and TV Land TV not even TV like
- 2:34like the antenna TV. Yeah, like my parents watch who are like they
- 2:38watched Dragnet reruns and crab Dragnet. Yes, I don't even see mister Red
- 2:42on any of those things. Man, is it still in the air.
- 2:44I don't think so. I don't know why I pulled that out. That
- 2:46was back maybe back in the nineties, got him getting hold. I feel
- 2:51like that one got canceled because they like shoved glass and the horses hind oh
- 2:54God to make them do the lip thing. Yeah, these were a different
- 3:00Absolutely, we got a great show for you this week, decent amount of
- 3:04topics. We got some listener feedback that we're gonna be getting into right off
- 3:07the bat. And then it's kind of like just not talk about really sports
- 3:12too much at all, a guilty pleasure as of late for Eric and I
- 3:15from an entertainment perspective. And then we wanted to get into the women's college
- 3:20basketball national title game between Iowa and South Carolina that you're an average of eighteen
- 3:25point seven million viewers and another record, and we've been talking about women's basketball.
- 3:31We've been talking about women's sports a lot on this podcast platform. We're
- 3:35gonna continue doing that here, of course, on this show. And then
- 3:38from there some sixers talk, and then Eric found a fantastic thread from a
- 3:44minor league baseball player named Josh Gessner who was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies
- 3:50back in twenty nineteen, but he's drifted around the miners. He put up
- 3:53He put up a really, really eye opening and very cool thread on Twitter
- 3:58Twitter slash x if you call it x. And then when we're thrown down
- 4:01on the table this week, we got Tim Kelly from Phillies Nation dot com.
- 4:04He's gonna join us for a quick look at how this Phillies team has
- 4:08been batting and pitching during this first leg of the season and what's happening with
- 4:13the team. So let's get into this week's show. Let's get into some
- 4:17listener feedback from one of our good friends who's written us every now and again,
- 4:21Francis Sweeney. He said, Hey, guys, hope you're all doing
- 4:26great. Just got back from seeing the Phillies play the Nats down in DC
- 4:29over the weekend. Felt like a home game on Saturday. With the number
- 4:31of Phillies fans there. They've really built up the ballpark area and the stadium
- 4:35staff made it very easy to bring our toddler infant in all the kids gear.
- 4:40It is a great easy weekend trip for any listeners who haven't had the
- 4:44pleasure of seeing a game there yet. And separately, I got tickets from
- 4:47my wife and I to go to the Flyers upcoming Saturday night game for the
- 4:50Wayne Simmons tribute retirement night. He was one of my favorite Flyers for so
- 4:56many years and I'm honored as a fan that he chose to retire as a
- 5:00Flyer. Really hoping the Wells Fargo Centers packed to the brim so we can
- 5:03thank this legend the way that he deserves. That the team can go out
- 5:08and grind out hopefully a much needed win against the Devil's. Have a great
- 5:12rest of the week, and thanks again for work putting the pod together,
- 5:15Francis. So Hey, Francis, buddy, thank you so much for writing
- 5:18us here and some good subject matters here. I don't know how much Eric's
- 5:21gonna be getting into the Flyers talk and Wayne Simmons stuff too much, but
- 5:26maybe maybe maybe the Phillies stuff, Buddy, I do have some Wayne Simmons
- 5:30thoughts. Oh nice, all right, Yeah, Well, I gotta say
- 5:33I've been down to I've been down to DC for a NAT's Phillies game in
- 5:39the past, and it really is amazing because he hit the nail on the
- 5:43head. It is like a home game for the Phillies down there almost all
- 5:46the time. And it's not That's not to say that the Nats fans are
- 5:49are are crap fans by any stretch of the management. I don't know.
- 5:53Maybe they are, maybe they don't take that much of an interest, but
- 5:56man, Phillies fans, they just come out down there, you know,
- 5:59right off a Capitol Hill. It's a pretty cool stadium and in ballpark,
- 6:03lots of development has happened over the years and it's a great place to watch
- 6:08a game. Funny enough, my my wife and daughter were in d C
- 6:12Friday through Sunday, down there with Francis for what down there with Francis.
- 6:17Yes, you know, they were there for why we always travel my daughter's
- 6:23dance schedule. Yep. And uh. And my wife actually text me she's
- 6:28like, the Phillies must be in town, because holy hell, there's she
- 6:31said, there's Phillies people everywhere, and I was like, and I quick
- 6:34looked. I was like, yeah, they are. And I wasn't surprised
- 6:38because it is a quick it's not a it's not a bad drive. It's
- 6:41much like when they play the Orioles or you know in Baltimore. Yeah,
- 6:44I've never been in the stadium, but I've heard the same thing that it's
- 6:46it's it's it's kind of a cookie cutter stadium. But but from like the
- 6:51new generation of of of of stadiums, and I've heard the same thing,
- 6:56and Jeff, God blessed Francis. I I've I've taking a toddler, I've
- 7:00taken a baby to uh to a baseball game. I've taken a Phillies to
- 7:04Phillies games. It's not easy, dude, you you there's so much gear
- 7:09you're packing. And real quick story, my my daughter's first Philadelphia Phillies baseball
- 7:15game. We we we did the real deal. We took we took the
- 7:16broad Street line down the subway from Suburban station. Came up and I was
- 7:21like all proud. I was, so I let her. I let her
- 7:25walk like up the sidewalk a little bit, and within like like a minute,
- 7:30I'm like, oh yeah, everyone's really moving fast to the stadium.
- 7:34And as I went to go kind of grab her hand, all of a
- 7:38sudden, she kind of started tumbling forward smack hit her forehead against the side,
- 7:43and there's a great picture of after the game, we're back in the
- 7:45hotel and uh, I'm sitting behind her with a beer going eh and my
- 7:49daughter is a huge shiner on her, this big, big raspberry in the
- 7:54middle of her forehead. That was her first experience, and she fell asleep
- 7:57about the fifth inning. I think it was. Yeah, but I I
- 8:01know what Frances is talking about, like, you just want to find is
- 8:03you just want to find some kind of event that you can take your kids
- 8:07to, and especially when they're a really tiny and if it's a sporting event,
- 8:11it's even better. Absolutely, it's it's I remember I remember the twins
- 8:15first time we actually took them to Coca Cola Park Leigh Valley Iron Pigs Triple
- 8:18A game, and I was just I always had these high expectators, these
- 8:22ridiculous high expectations for my kids. I'm like, all right, it's a
- 8:26new atmosphere, it's a new environment. They're gonna be all psyched. They're
- 8:28gonna be excited to be here and stuff like that. Now done by like
- 8:33the third inning, they're like tired, tired. You're walking around the stadium
- 8:39so much. They got their little legs, you know what I mean,
- 8:41They're freaking tired. It's third inning. And I'm like, I'm like,
- 8:43all right, come on, we got six more, Like we got six
- 8:46more to go? What are you doing here? Nope, sleeping? Six
- 8:50more might as well be two years to a tiny ki Yes exactly. Yeah,
- 8:56well Wayne Simmons really quick. I mean, I think it's fantastic stick
- 9:00that the Flyers are of course doing this here. I mean, he's one
- 9:05of my favorite old power forwards from this Flyers organization. And look, fifteen
- 9:11years in this league. He's thirty five years old right now, and he
- 9:16just really held a special place I think for so many, so many fans.
- 9:20I mean, just known for his clutch goals, just he had this
- 9:24uncompromising toughness all the time at the end of the day, quality player,
- 9:30quality person and teammate. Everybody loved him as a teammate and just like like
- 9:35a really good role model off the ice. And it's when he was traded.
- 9:41I was sad. It was time, of course, as many of
- 9:43us who follow the Flyers knew, it was time for him to be traded,
- 9:46and we were all hoping that he would get that Stanley Cup, and
- 9:50you know it was. It was sad, but I'm glad he's coming back
- 9:54to Philly to retire as a Flyer, signing that one day contract with the
- 9:58team. And just like Francis, I hope the Wells Fargo Center is going
- 10:01to be absolutely jam packed to the top and last row up there at the
- 10:07at the Wells Fargo Center. So I don't know, I'm I'm looking forward
- 10:11to following this for sure. Yeah, I know, I don't. I
- 10:13don't speak too finally of the Flyers on here. It's more so a joke
- 10:18because I just don't follow hockey that much. But I was. I was
- 10:22following the Flyers back when they picked him up in twenty eleven. They picked
- 10:24up Braden Shiny, Wayne and and in exchange for Mike Richards, I believe,
- 10:30yeah, And it was it was a huge turnaround for the for the
- 10:35team, Like they got young all of a sudden, and Wayne Simmons came
- 10:39in and he was just one of those like I like this guy, like
- 10:43he's kind of an asshole. He's kind of a tough guy. He's talented,
- 10:46like he might become more than just got a big defensive kind of assholeea.
- 10:52And he really did in his entire career. And he was part of
- 10:54that really fun team that just beat the shit out of the pang Wins in
- 11:00the twenty twelve playoffs. Yeah, he was part of that. And I
- 11:03was living in Pittsburgh at a time, man, and I was like the
- 11:05only Flyers fan I felt like in the entire city. And I remember that.
- 11:09I remember I remember the Flyers has taking it to them in that series,
- 11:13and he was part of that, and just just fond memories of him.
- 11:16And I almost felt like he could have been almost like a Rod brindanmore
- 11:18kind of player if his offensive a little more offensive skills had developed. But
- 11:24yeah, not one of those guys. It's not a bad thing to say,
- 11:28Yeah, not at all. Really good flyer had a good career here
- 11:30and just a good career fifteen years. Man, he made a made a
- 11:33shit ton of money. He did say that, yes, yes, rightfully,
- 11:37so rightful, Like he just he's a guy too that had a lot
- 11:41of respect for Flyers fandom like the Flyers fans in general, and the Flyers
- 11:46fans for the most part, you know, just respected him too as a
- 11:50player. So hope you enjoyed that time Saturday night. Francis not sure when
- 11:54you're gonna be listening to this podcast, but if it's before, we hope
- 11:58you have a great time. If you live to us after, we hope
- 12:00it was a great time for you. So let's get into our next subject
- 12:03here, Eric a guilty pleasure as of late from an entertainment perspective, I
- 12:09wanted to put this on the agenda because I feel like I need to talk
- 12:13about this. I feel like I need to talk about my guilty pleasure with
- 12:16regard to a podcast that I have been listening to and every single time I
- 12:20have it on in my car, I want somebody to slap me in the
- 12:24face. It's like, I just want somebody to come through the window and
- 12:26slap me as hard as possible. But I'm loving listening to this for some
- 12:31reason. It is then Aaron Andrews and Carissa Thompson podcast called Calm down,
- 12:39honestly, and please ladies out there, this is no offense. They are
- 12:43just a bunch of hens. Just talking and yapping it up and just do
- 12:48that oh yeah, oh, oh, I know, oh yes, you
- 12:52know, like after every line, after every single line. But their stories
- 12:56are compelling. Their stories are very compelling. These are two very powerful ladies
- 13:01in the world of broadcast, especially in terms of the NFL. They are
- 13:09they lead privileged lives, but it's interesting to hear the trials and tribulations that
- 13:16they do go through within the course of their lives. Some things where you
- 13:18kind of take a step back and say, man, I'm kind of glad
- 13:20I'm not them, but other things where it's like, really, this is
- 13:24what you're complaining about. And I just love listening to this podcast for some
- 13:28reason, and I really should be slapped in the face for it, because
- 13:31it's just it's nothing really that I've listened to. But again, these ladies
- 13:35are compelling. Their stories are compelling. I've this is my guilty pleasure here.
- 13:41But it's a way of life that you didn't even know existed, right,
- 13:43So it's kind of a kind of a portal into that, and I
- 13:48honestly don't know what it is like. Do they talk about life on the
- 13:52road with the NFL during the season, They did like I only started listening
- 13:56to this podcast probably about maybe five six weeks ago, but they put some
- 14:01reruns on recently. I call them reruns. By the way, Jesus,
- 14:05they're old, I know, like put the reruns on the television. I
- 14:11gotta get in three thirty they're gonna play the podcast rerun of the Yeah,
- 14:16what a jerk I am. They put on some older shows when they just
- 14:20weren't making content. It was from the season, but they have been on
- 14:26since and they're like talking about Aaron Andrews has a baby, and the baby's
- 14:31getting ready to turn one year old, and they were having a conversation.
- 14:35I swear to God, Chris Thompson says to her, please don't do what
- 14:39one of our friends did and spend thirty thousand dollars on the one year old's
- 14:43birthday. Just please don't do that. And I was absolutely blown away by
- 14:46the fact that they would, even of course they know people in this world,
- 14:50they know people in this in this arena. We're dropping thirty thousand dollars
- 14:56on a one year old's birthday. Was never gonna remember it. It's like
- 14:58nothing, you know, And it was just I'm amazed listening to it.
- 15:01It's it's amazing listening to this stuff in this world that these ladies live in.
- 15:07I can't relate. I'll say that I can't relate to anything. They're
- 15:11good looking ladies too, I can't. I can't relate to good looking.
- 15:16I got my nerd goggles on. Here. I'm in my little studio area.
- 15:18I'm wearing my Eagles shirt, and I'm looking real chubby and stumpy here.
- 15:24And you have your your noodling guitars behind you. Yeah, so you
- 15:26do a noodle a little bit of boo. But I can't. I mean
- 15:31my daughter's first birthday party we had in our little house in Harrisburg. We
- 15:33had forty people over fifty and we're laying on top one another because our house
- 15:39was so small. I can't relate to thirty thousand dollars, I know,
- 15:43but it's it. But again, I see where you're coming from. At
- 15:46the same time, it's like it's a it is a window and a life
- 15:50that who the hell would even know that existed. It coming from our perspective,
- 15:54plus work, and you love the NFL. Yeah, so obviously.
- 15:56But I understand why I wouldn't fee guilty. I wouldn't feel embarrassed, but
- 16:03it is. It's it's almost it's not awkward, but it's like I understand,
- 16:07like where you be like, will I listen to this and your buddy
- 16:11buddy viewers would be like, hm, okay, yeah, maybe saying some
- 16:17other choice words to me that we aren't going to say right now on this
- 16:19podcast platform. Okay, but this is where I'll get to mind. But
- 16:25like, this is I had this discussion earlier with somebody. I'm like,
- 16:26what the hell is a guilty pleasure? Though? Like, do I feel
- 16:30guilty for watching or listening to it or liking or liking or do or am
- 16:36I embarrassed to tell people that I like it? It's both? Is it
- 16:40both? I think it's both. I think it is both because I get
- 16:44that because that's what I was just saying with the Calm Down podcast. Yeah,
- 16:47part of me is embarrassed about it. I'm embarrassed about it from a
- 16:51cultural standpoint because a forty six year old man shouldn't be getting a lot of
- 16:55enjoyment from two of the most powerful women in the NFL who are just henning
- 17:02it up about their lives. But I but I do. And part of
- 17:07it there's an embarrassment to it, and part of me feels guilty kind of
- 17:11for liking it so much. It's I'm like, I got a lot of
- 17:12podcasts here in my freaking app here that I could be listening to and watching.
- 17:17That's your that's your go to, and that's been that's been myf go
- 17:19to. It's like my top three go to recently. Yep. I think
- 17:25where I struggle with this one is I'm forty seven, and it's almost like,
- 17:30listen, I like what I like, Yeah, fuck yourself if you
- 17:32don't just like exactly. I think that's where I and my wife said earlier.
- 17:37I asked her, what is your definition of it? We're kind of
- 17:40the same page, but she did say I think I think another element to
- 17:44it might be if it's beneath you, like in terms of if it's beneath
- 17:51you mentally intellectually. I got another aspect. Okay, I don't think that
- 17:56show would be would qualify for that, but yeah, so mine mine,
- 18:02Uh, the one does absolutely qualify and being intellectually below me. Man,
- 18:07since I've been unemployed, I watch bar Rescue Non Star really right, But
- 18:15here's the thing I'm not. I'm not I don't feel stupid saying it out
- 18:18loud, right, I mean, even as the past few seasons you watch
- 18:22and you're like, oh my god, it's not even real, Like half
- 18:25of this is fake obviously, right, I think some of these bartenders are
- 18:27actors. I don't think they're even work at the fucking I wonder that that
- 18:30exact. I was actually gonna ask you that, because you've been watching it
- 18:33here, it's seemed like I've only seen like I don't watch it or anything
- 18:37like that. I've seen clips here and there, but it's like, are
- 18:37these people acting here? Yeah, some don't even feel like they're actually like
- 18:44part of the family or part of the bar. They're just actors trying to
- 18:47get in the Hollywood and yeah, but yeah, it is absolutely below me,
- 18:51and there are probably certain people in my life I'd be like, I
- 18:53won't admit that I watched this crap, but I watch way too much of
- 18:56it because there's some channel on Hulu it plays it almost twenty four hours a
- 19:00day. Yes, that is definitely on there. But then I went to
- 19:06TV and music or movies. Those are my three big things, right,
- 19:08No movies I've watched recently where I have a guilty pleasure. And this goes
- 19:14right in my wheelhouse because again, I'm unemployed a lot of free time.
- 19:17Yeah, now, this one's a I'm gonna say it's a guilty pleasure,
- 19:22but I don't really think it is. You tell me what you think.
- 19:25I've been listening to Nalie Merchant a lot. Is that I'm gonna give you
- 19:32one of these guitars. You gotta start playing here, buddy, we gotta
- 19:36get your music. She she writes great songs. She has an awesome voice.
- 19:42She is a great songwriter. I'll tell you, yeah, she absolutely
- 19:45is incredible. I'm listening to her solo stuff. I'm listening to stuff you
- 19:48do with Billy Bragg and we'll go back in the day and the Mermaid Avenue
- 19:52records, and I'm just like, holy hell, she is a al timer.
- 19:56If she had come out in the late seventies of the New York scene,
- 20:00she would like Patti Smith. Yeah yeah. And I just listened to
- 20:03her now, and I just I respect like she writes the kind of music
- 20:07and I'm kissing her ass now And it's not like it's not even a guilty.
- 20:11I'm trying to justify that this is obviously it's a guilty pleasure, right,
- 20:14Yeah, but she writes music for like her age, Like she keeps
- 20:18like, I'm fifty now, I wrote this song. I'm fifty two now.
- 20:22I wrote this song because that's where I'm at my life. I don't
- 20:25know. I respect that he's an awesome voice. I like her music,
- 20:27and if I certain people may be like, I'm going to see Pig Destroyer
- 20:32in a couple of weeks. Yes, a great grindcore band. I went
- 20:34there and be like, what are you into, man, Natalie Merchant.
- 20:38Yeah, but listen to Natalie Merchant as of late. You know, she's
- 20:41very uncompromising with her sound. I might get some weird looks. Yes,
- 20:47so there you go. By the way, I can't wait to go to
- 20:48the Picture Destroyer show with you. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be
- 20:52fun. Yes, I you know what, it's weird to mention Natalie Merchant.
- 21:00I think as as a guilty pleasure. I think music in general anymore
- 21:03as we're getting older. Maybe when we were back in our twenties, especially
- 21:07when you were on you and I were at Penn State and were in college,
- 21:10there was definitely like I remember the one time, I remember one time,
- 21:14and I actually, I don't ever think I told you this. You
- 21:17admitted that you were listening to I Go. You admitted you were like listening
- 21:22to Andrew WK. I think at one point for his first record, first
- 21:26record, right, the one where he's got the blood coming out of his
- 21:29nose and stuff like that. And I remember I didn't even say anything to
- 21:32our buddy Dave, but I was just like, oh my gosh, what's
- 21:33happening, Derek. He went from Soundgarden to Andrew. But I got a
- 21:38little judgy about it, at least inside, you know. But like after
- 21:42the year, after so many years, though, you go back and you
- 21:45listen to that, it's like, you know what, it's not terrible.
- 21:48It's not terrible at all. You know. It's music is so fucking subjective
- 21:53in so many different ways. And shit that I used to listen to back
- 21:57in the day was and I can say that now like it was crap,
- 22:02but some of it was good too, and vice versa. There's stuff that
- 22:06I listened to now, Like there's a band that I've been loving with you
- 22:08and I've talked about. The band is called Knocked Loose, and my wife,
- 22:11bless her soul, she has been really good with a lot of the
- 22:15metal stuff over the years. She's gone to shows with me. She hates
- 22:18it. She goes, I can't do this, Jeff. She goes,
- 22:21I can't do knocked loose. I can't do it. I told her,
- 22:25do you want to go to the show with me? And she goes,
- 22:26you can go alone to this one. Yeah. As you get older,
- 22:33there does a demarcation line does get formed, especially the kind of we like,
- 22:37like death metal, grind It's really difficult. I imagine dating back in
- 22:45the day, if you in your like early twenties and like you take a
- 22:48girl to see grind core, if she's into it, then you she's a
- 22:53keeper, yes, But then you get older, it's like this is my
- 22:59thing. No one else want to hear this. I get it exactly.
- 23:00Yeah. Yeah, I like the Natalie Merchant that I kind of made a
- 23:04joke to say, like she you know, she's uncompromising with her sound.
- 23:07But really there's something to be said for that too. There really is.
- 23:11There's something to be said for being as old as she is still making music,
- 23:15still being relevant within the genre, and like not compromising your your style
- 23:21and who you are as a musician. I think I dig that she's she
- 23:23just is who she is. She doesn't give it like I and that kind
- 23:26of it's that that really is like a punk Ethos kind of thing. She's
- 23:32just make that kind of music. I will say, when you and Dave
- 23:34admitted to me that you like the first Nickelback record in the mid two thousands,
- 23:41I was. I don't know if I said like I was horrified.
- 23:48I'll just say that Dave's the one who said he liked it. She said
- 23:52I listened to it. Maybe Now that's a guilty pleasure. That really is.
- 23:56Yeah, I'd love to know you're guilty pleasure out there, folks.
- 24:00Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. We'd love to read your email here
- 24:04on the show, and it'd be fun to really hear some of the guilty
- 24:08pleasures out there for sure. But before we go to our break, we
- 24:11want to get into the women's college basketball national title game between South Carolina and
- 24:17Iowa again drew eighteen point seven million viewers. Another record. Here's some Here's
- 24:22some of what this sporting event beat out in terms of viewership. Every World
- 24:29Series game since Game seven of the twenty nineteen World Series, every NBA Finals
- 24:33game since Game five of the twenty seventeen NBA Finals, every daytona five hundred
- 24:38since two thousand and six, every Master's Final Round viewership since two thousand and
- 24:44one, all but four college football games in twenty twenty three, and that
- 24:48came from the athletic those numbers right there. It was an amazing sports spectacle,
- 24:57and it came down, really came down to the last few seconds coming
- 25:02down to a foul and whether or not a foul should have been called.
- 25:04Regardless of that, it is amazing not just what Caitlin Clark has done,
- 25:10but but what these coaches have done and these other women that are on the
- 25:15team as well. South Carolina just just an unbelievable and unbelievable run. And
- 25:22if they do it next year, holy holy shit, it would be amazing.
- 25:26With just what women athletics are right now. I love it. We
- 25:32are both you know, you know, we're both girl dads, you know
- 25:33what I mean. I just love to see where women's athletics are going right
- 25:37now here in twenty twenty four. It's not just like pull the curtain back
- 25:45too in that number. Sorry, we're talking to Sunday at like what three
- 25:51o'clock in the afternoon. Yeah, that game, and that's a massive,
- 25:56massive share TV share for that time, for that time period. Hell,
- 26:02the Friday night Final four. I don't have the numbers on that, but
- 26:06I heard the numbers were phenomenal for that. It's a Friday night. People
- 26:08are out, yeah, not staying in. I have a feeling like a
- 26:11lot of sports bars like people galluinated, like like gravitated, sorry, gravitated
- 26:18the TVs. Yeah, watch those final four games I watched. I watched
- 26:22the men's Final four, and I watched the men's championship. And the fact
- 26:26that we're even like talking about the women's finals. In the final four,
- 26:30Caitlin Clark is a huge part of that, probably the biggest piece of it.
- 26:33Let's let's be honest, right, but so many good storylines came out
- 26:40of that South Carolina girls team was girls team. I'm sorry, I still
- 26:42have a girl in my house, but the South Carolina women's team. Man,
- 26:47just we're thirty seven to zero. Don like notough. Not enough to
- 26:52said about Don Staley Philadelphia needed. By the way, Yes, I hear
- 26:55she's getting a statue of some sort somewhere. She's sure is a fucking Rocky
- 27:00statue. Okay, the guy's not even real. There needs to be a
- 27:03Don Staley statue. Let' let's be honest, like multi multi championship winner.
- 27:10I don't know if you saw on h on Twitter, Instagram. The practice
- 27:14squad got rings, yes, and the practice squad is all guys that practice.
- 27:18It's her girls and her women. My god, what the hell wrong
- 27:21with me? And uh like just just just an incredible again, the fact
- 27:26that we're talking about a third topic end of the show. It was a
- 27:30fantastic game. The skill level. I talked about this a couple of weeks
- 27:33ago, the skill level as a coach of basketball, Like I tell my
- 27:37boys now watch Yukon boys or men's men's team and watch the women's game.
- 27:45That's the skill level I want you guys to have exactly. That's that's gonna
- 27:48that's going to get you possible college s college ships down the road. It's
- 27:52not the way that like, I mean, I like Alabama they made the
- 27:56Final four, but that ain't it. Like it's just not just not the
- 28:00best basketball I've ever seen running down the court. Let's shoot a three and
- 28:04do that five hundred times. Pretty amazing, it's gonna be kind of cool.
- 28:11I I some of the this is how big the sport has gotten.
- 28:15This is actually a good thing. I hate to say this, but there's
- 28:18controversy now. Right. The old heads of the w n b A were
- 28:23like, look, come to the league, baby, we got you.
- 28:26We're gonna we're gonna kick your ass and stuff. Right, Diana Tarassi was
- 28:30kind of an asshole in some of the interviews recently about Kalin Clark. But
- 28:34honestly, but that's good for the sport, okay, And the fact she's
- 28:38gonna get be the first pick. Everyone's gonna be gunning for her. She's
- 28:41gonna have probably a tough rough season, but I might I'm I'm actually gonna
- 28:45watch Indiana fever. I think I'm gonna watch some of their games because he's
- 28:49on the team, and that I hate to bring this up to but CNN
- 28:56posting a picture of Caitlin Clark to announce it South I only have won the
- 29:00national championship. It's like, what are you doing? Are you deaf as
- 29:06hell? Exactly? Yea, But again, it's all part of the narrative
- 29:10that was not there a year ago or two years ago, that oh my
- 29:12God, everyone's talking about this now. It's just it's it's unfortunately it's tied
- 29:18into the sport, but it's actually unfortunately like it's part of the it's part
- 29:22of the nucleus now for that sport to move forward. Don Staley talking about
- 29:29she doesn't care about trans people playing or whatever. Again, all good for
- 29:33the sport. And it absolutely incredible that to think twenty years ago that two
- 29:38guys on a pot, two middle aged men on a podcast, we're talking
- 29:41about women's basketball. Yeah, unheard of back then. I did not think
- 29:45eleven years ago when we started this podcast that we were going to be talking
- 29:49about women's college basketball. I did not at all. But it's part of
- 29:53the culture now. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. It's going to be
- 29:56sticking around. So I hope you've been enjoyed what you're listening to here at
- 30:00the PSD podcast Show. Subscribe on whatever podcast platform you are on, and
- 30:04if anything happens to your feed, head on over to Philadelphia Sports Table dot
- 30:07com. We've got all of our shows over there, and again we'd love
- 30:11to hear from you over email Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. Just
- 30:15like Francis shot us off that email earlier. We'd love to hear about your
- 30:18guilty pleasures, what you're thinking about with regard to women's college basketball, the
- 30:22Sixers, baseball, everything. So uh oh, yeah, we've got some
- 30:26We got some NFL talk coming up down the road as well. We got
- 30:30the draft, Eric, the draft is coming. All I care about is
- 30:36that we all get together and hang out and watch it. Yes, yes,
- 30:40absolutely, all right, folks, We're gonna take quick break, pay
- 30:42some bills. We will be back in just a bit with some Sixers talk
- 30:45and some minor league baseball talk and some Phillies talk. Stick with us,
- 30:48We'll be right back. All right. We are back, and now would
- 30:53be a good time, Eric, to get into this Philadelphia seventy six Ers
- 30:56team. They've been bouncing back since Joe l. Embiid has been back on
- 31:00the court. I think what's amazing with this team at this point, after
- 31:04the garbage that we saw from them time and time again when Embiid was out
- 31:08and injured and getting back trying to get back to form, is that this
- 31:12is a team that could possibly move up to the number three seed by the
- 31:17end of this siege, the end of the season, which is now really
- 31:21really tight in this Eastern Conference logjam here, or they could just completely crap
- 31:26the bed and suffered through a one off playing game. It's gonna be like
- 31:32really really close with these standings at this point. But Joel embiid Man getting
- 31:37back into form. I mean, yes, he was playing Detroit's terrible defense,
- 31:41put up thirty seven points recently eight assists. He did have five turnovers
- 31:45in that game, but he also scored thirty points in less than twenty three
- 31:51minutes this past Saturday in Memphis against a Grizzlies team. Yes, that was
- 31:56injured as well, but it's good to see him getting back to shape.
- 31:59Dan to be Melton on the court for the first time this past week two.
- 32:01It's nice to see him back on the court. So, I don't
- 32:06know, things are quote looking up for the Sixers. I don't know.
- 32:09You're the basketball guy, what are you thinking at this point? So the
- 32:14two games left Orlando and my god, who's they play some crap team the
- 32:20last game of the year. I forget who it is. I don't think
- 32:22they can get the three seed at this point. The Knicks, I think
- 32:27they could for some reason. It's close, but I'm not sure if they
- 32:30can. I think the ideal my brother and I were taught texting my buddy
- 32:36Mack and I two. I think the ideal spot is that six hole,
- 32:38Yeah, which is still open. I'm on ESPN the app right now.
- 32:44I'm trying to figure out they don't update their stuff like the night of,
- 32:47so they might be like, right, tied for the six hole with the
- 32:52Racers, but tonight the Miami and I think, yeah, Miami lost and
- 33:00someone else lost too. But regardless, if you look at the team itself,
- 33:05I know it is Detroit, but who cares? Like they look fantastic
- 33:09that that's the perfect game for MBA to come back and kind of play himself
- 33:14back in the shape. And I heard people on Twitter. I saw people
- 33:17on Twitter like complaining, why is he playing? Why is he playing so
- 33:21much against a bad team? But their next game is only Fridays. It's
- 33:25a three days you know, three days of rest and Meltain's back. I'm
- 33:30telling you right now, besides the Celtics, no team wants to play the
- 33:35Sixers in the playoffs. No, Like this is the first time in ages
- 33:37I can think about like, we're actually the scariest team besides the top seed
- 33:43that going into the Eastern, going into the Eastern playoffs, no one wants
- 33:46to play a healthy embid. No one wants to play Maxie. Thank you
- 33:50for saying this, by the way, because like these idiots on Twitter x
- 33:53whatever, you know, So just just sit about for the rest of the
- 33:57season for what for what? They can make a run here. There could
- 34:02there could be a spark when we least expect it. They could possibly get
- 34:07them to the Eastern Conference finals. It could happen. It could it could
- 34:10happen. And right now, if you wind up in the seven hole somehow,
- 34:15and he played them walking in the first round with a limping Yiannis Ye
- 34:20who was just announced a couple hours ago that he's he's done for the regular
- 34:22season. He's a bad calf strain, is what they called it. He's
- 34:28seven to one, dude. His calf is like as long as my my
- 34:31leg Okay. A calf strain is not a good injury for a guy that
- 34:37relays on like mobility and and and and and getting up in the air yep.
- 34:44And in the past and Be has kind of owned him at times.
- 34:46So I again, this is kind of weird, Like we're usually we're usually
- 34:52sitting in the two or three spot, and like we go in and we're
- 34:57scared to death as six rus fans. Yeah, the first time, it's
- 35:00like, oh, we're hot, we're going in. We're going into the
- 35:02playoffs as like like kind of the under the radar team who's kicking everyone's ass.
- 35:08Melton's back, Buddy, he'll come off the bench. I love the
- 35:13way have Buddy, He'll come off the bench. Just hit three quarters.
- 35:15That's fantastic. We have a real genuine number two in Maxi. If they
- 35:22beat Orlando on Friday and they and they went out, I'm hoping they get
- 35:27that six seed. But if they wind up in the seven to play the
- 35:30Bucks with a limping Yannis in a wide open, wide open East, besides
- 35:37the Celtics, really they play the Nets, by the way, that's the
- 35:38last game on Sunday, and they should beat them. Yeah, Nicks,
- 35:44Nicks without Randall, Cleveland just all over the place. Orlando. There's no
- 35:46freaking way Orlando is going to go in confident into the playoffs. Pacers are
- 35:51all over the place. We're the one team that has like everything going for
- 35:55it, and we just happen to have a seven to two and seventy pounds
- 35:59monster who could put up forty five points in twenty rebounds and just completely destroy
- 36:04your your, your your season. I'm optimistic. Hesitant, of course,
- 36:12it's been a word. Yeah, kind of like going into the playoffs like
- 36:15a Philadelphia team, like we're underestimated, we're but other teams are a little
- 36:21scared of us. So first, I prefer that as opposed to like all
- 36:23the pressure being on you to perform as the two or three seed. Well,
- 36:28that's what's been happening over the past how many fucking years now, that
- 36:31pressure's been there and they get folded. Well, they've folded to the pressure
- 36:36in the second round every freaking year year. That pressure is now off.
- 36:39Joel Embiid is now healthy quote healthy, I should say, you know,
- 36:45I mean he's coming. He's not. It's like we're not at that point
- 36:47in this season where we're like, Okay, he's going to be getting injured.
- 36:52He already went through it, folks, he already. Thank god,
- 36:54he went through it already, and he's looking damn good right now. So
- 36:59I don't know. I'm optimist too, man, I'm optimistic, and we're
- 37:01home for the last two games. Yeah, right, we have Orlando coming
- 37:04in. I'm sure Orlando in their locker rooms, Like, let's do it,
- 37:07let's take him to them. Yeah, yep, who the fucking their
- 37:12roster can guard embad? I know they're a good defensive team. I love
- 37:16Jonathan Isaac's defense is fantastic. He can't stop. He's Isaac is what seven
- 37:23feet tall, one hundred and ten pounds, Simon stick legs, bird chess
- 37:30just like myself, right, he can't stop Embiid. Like, I love
- 37:35that. That's the team we have to play, and they're above us.
- 37:37We can send a message. We might play them in the first round.
- 37:39You know, it's absolutely possible. I can't believe how optimistic I'm about this
- 37:45team. It's kind of the perfect situation. It's been the This is the
- 37:49first time in a long time of going in like all right, like you're
- 37:53truly underestimating us. That's fine, not that phony, like we're the two
- 37:58seed, but nobody believed in on us. Like yeah, stop everybody,
- 38:01this is the first time, like in a long day. I'm very excited,
- 38:05and this maybe the first year I go in like whatever happens, happens,
- 38:08Yeah, talking on it's me the worst two by the way, being
- 38:12unemployed and watching the NBA playoffs because I have nothing to do, say,
- 38:15I got a lot of time to think. I'm gonna sit there, I'm
- 38:19gonna walk the dog for two hours, like, oh my god, the
- 38:22Melton played twelve minutes. By the way, I love how you just called
- 38:28yourself bird chest. I remember Whenlen used to call you, well, I
- 38:31combined, he called me bird chest, you call me cinnamon stick legs.
- 38:36Yes, and uh many a time, folks on the show We're out there,
- 38:42Jeff used to walk up to me, and Jeff's a stout guy,
- 38:45and he would just grab me by the hip and just pick me up over
- 38:49his shoulder in one motion like it was nothing. I'm six three. He
- 38:57just picked me up. There you go. All right, all right,
- 39:02let's move on to our final topic here before we get to what we're thrown
- 39:07down on the table and this, Eric, I appreciate you contributing to the
- 39:12agenda this week. This was great. This is great. I mean,
- 39:15this is legitimately a fantastic thread here. Well, I saw a tweet and
- 39:20I sent to you and said, here's a topic. That's my contribution to
- 39:22the show. That's it. That's it, folks, it's great. Should
- 39:28I read this whole thing? I mean, it's not like that long.
- 39:30I mean it's kind of long, but it's not that long. Should we
- 39:31just kind of read what this is? I mean the highlights? I guess
- 39:36the highlights. Okay. So, as I mentioned at the top of the
- 39:38show, a minor league baseball player named Josh Gessner. He in twenty nineteen,
- 39:45he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, and he wrote right at
- 39:49the top. Five years later, I haven't played in a single major league
- 39:52baseball game, and here's how the minor leagues worked. And he just went
- 39:58through the process. He went through the process, just talking about how you
- 40:01know, you're competing against your teammates essentially, and despite competing against each other
- 40:08or you know, it really doesn't feel like it. You spend more time
- 40:12with your teammates than you do your family and your friends, and you just
- 40:15become best friends with everybody even though you're competing against them. You also just
- 40:20talked about how you know there were basically what there is. There's five five
- 40:25hundred plus minor leaguers for seven hundred and eighty spots in the big leagues,
- 40:31and new players are coming in each year. You got the draft every year,
- 40:35so there's this tremendous amount of turnover and just again the competition to actually
- 40:40try to make it to major League baseball. And it was it was a
- 40:44fascinating read, Eric, because even though he signed with signed with the Phillies
- 40:51for what one point two million dollars, he he still doesn't play in a
- 40:54Major League Baseball game. And I believe the minimum you can make and made
- 41:00league baseball, which he did put in one of the uh SECU Yeah,
- 41:05I think it was seven hundred and forty thousand, and he's like, you
- 41:07know, a couple of years can change your life here or there. And
- 41:10there's a lot of luck involved in this too. And that's what I really
- 41:14took away from this particular thread, Eric, was that Lady, luck is
- 41:19part of professional sports. And if you are in professional sports trying to get
- 41:23to the top level, whether it's the NBA, NHL, NFL, or
- 41:29Major League baseball, major league soccer as well, you know, there's some
- 41:32luck there because there's a lot of talent. Man, there's a lot of
- 41:36athletically talented individuals. This guy is one of them. Josh Gasner is one
- 41:40of them, but man, he just he just hasn't been able to get
- 41:44to the majors here. Yeah, a couple of takeaways from the thread.
- 41:50Number one, I think he's like he might be seeing his career. He's
- 41:54looking forward and thinking like, maybe my career is like telling stories. Yeah,
- 42:00in a story that has not been told many times, like the real
- 42:02how minor leagues actually work? Like how many movies are there about minor league
- 42:07baseball, like Bull Durham. There's not a lot, right, it's kind
- 42:10of a league league. Yeah, but it's one of those things like no
- 42:19one's ever really pulled the curtain back on how that works. And we tend
- 42:22to focus as fans on like the first round picks, the top prospects.
- 42:27But if you go to minor league baseball games, man, like, Okay,
- 42:30I'm going to see I'm going to see this guy and this guy,
- 42:32but there's like freaking sixty other guys out there. Yeah, and they're all
- 42:37doing a job. And that was another one of my takeaways is there's a
- 42:44huge there's a huge like population out there of people are like you're playing You're
- 42:51playing a game, like it's not a real job, you know, Like
- 42:54like you should just be happy, and it's like, no, it's a
- 42:58fucking job. It's hard job. Well, he said really really quick.
- 43:01He did say in one of the posts, he's like, he's like,
- 43:04sometimes you just you hate baseball. He said in twenty twenty one he had
- 43:08a bad case of the throwing yips. By the way Josh Gessner's picture,
- 43:13he said he had a bad case of the throwing yips. He said basically
- 43:15I couldn't throw a baseball remotely accurately at all. It's like he just lost
- 43:20it. And then he said, I not only hated my job, I
- 43:22dreaded it like it's a job. But how many of us can fucking like
- 43:30relate to that, right, Yeah, dreading your job, hating your job,
- 43:34succeeding at your job. Like, like, I just took a lot.
- 43:38I took a lot out of this thread and on a personal level,
- 43:42like I've been there where I've been like I wake up, I'm like,
- 43:44I fucking hate my job. Oh my god, I don't want to do
- 43:46this today. Or I wake up like I got this, I'm awesome.
- 43:51Yeah, Like it really it was like a ten ten tweet thread that just
- 43:58hit me in multiple directions. I was just like that was the big part,
- 44:02Like like it is a job and the guy busted his ass and and
- 44:07like it was really revealing. He talks about the mental aspect, the emotional
- 44:12aspect, the physical aspect of that job. Like a lot of us don't
- 44:15have to deal with the physical side of that, right, Like we just
- 44:17go to work. I when I sit at my desk and take calls for
- 44:21seven hours, it's not like I get up and go, oh my God,
- 44:23threw my arm out. I get Tommy John because I had calls today.
- 44:29Like it's really it's really really difficult. And one of the big things
- 44:34that struck struck me too is like we talked about the yips, he actually
- 44:37posted a video of him trying to throw a baseball. Oh, it's just
- 44:39awful. It looked like Len. It looked like Len. Yes, awful,
- 44:44awful athletic, just throw of Len. And it made me sad And
- 44:47I don't know, I really really felt it and like and the same at
- 44:52the same time, you're you're having fun, you're playing us, you're playing
- 44:57a sport that you love, and you're friends with all the guys on the
- 45:00team. Meanwhile, they're all going like in the back of their mind going
- 45:07I'm gonna make it. I want to make the team, dude, I
- 45:08want to make seven and forty thousand a year, and I got to beat
- 45:13you out to do it. But I love you. Yeah, like it
- 45:16just the the confusion the like. But you're also young, so like,
- 45:22like you don't I don't think it as good. You don't get caught up
- 45:25as much as in the mental battle with your teammates at that point. I
- 45:30can only imagine, like if we're like you and I at forty seven,
- 45:36forty six having families trying to compete for the same job at like, i'd
- 45:40be like, fuck you, motherfucker, you know, But you're young and
- 45:45like in you're best friends of those guys, right, And I just it
- 45:51shed a light on that that athletics are an actual job. There's a business
- 45:55behind it, and uh and again it just really I hope the kid makes
- 46:00it, but he might he probably won't. And that's a huge takeaway too.
- 46:05Like I think the highest he ever made was what a A ball?
- 46:07A ball? Yep, yeah, and you think about like him times what
- 46:14ten thousand? Yeah of those? Right. I got to minor league baseball
- 46:17games all the time and I never really think about that, but I think
- 46:21the next Senator's game in Harrisburg, I go to with my with my son,
- 46:24I'm gonna sit there and go like, man, he's gonna make it,
- 46:28and maybe him and all these guys are going to be what working lumber
- 46:35yards exactly ours, Like, yeah, that's it, that's the reality of
- 46:39it. It's a lot of fun to watch them in that moment, but
- 46:43like, what are their lives going to be in ten years from now?
- 46:45Exactly? What I thought was pretty compelling about this thread, too, was
- 46:49he tweeted that he said something like, you get every chance to reach your
- 46:53potential. The organizations provide you with every resource, coaches, technology, knowledge,
- 47:00and support, and he said teams spend millions on getting their minor league
- 47:04players better, and it means that talent only goes so far. Talent only
- 47:10goes so far. So if talent is only going so far, you begin
- 47:14to realize, probably sooner, that it is the job that you were just
- 47:17talking about, that it is the job, and there is a grind to
- 47:22it, just like we all have that grind every day when we're waking up
- 47:24in the morning, we go to that job. Well, some of us
- 47:27do. I'm sorry, no dig And it's like that grind is still there
- 47:36and yes, people I it. This is very eye opening because there's so
- 47:39many folks out there. We know, we see it all the time.
- 47:42Oh you just playing a sport for a living. What do you what are
- 47:45you complaining about? Like, shut up, it's a grind. It's a
- 47:47grind for everybody. Fuck those losers. Yes, that was my number one
- 47:53thing I said after I read it. I was like the fucking asshole and
- 47:57social media going, oh's is just a game? Like, fuck you,
- 48:00dude, this is not a game. It's a fun There's a picture of
- 48:04him with his buddies enjoying baseball, and then the next picture is him in
- 48:07a fucking hospital bed because surgery. Like it's no joke, Like this is
- 48:13a real thing. And as a parent too, like I took away like
- 48:20you talk about like work hard, work, hard, work, hard,
- 48:22work hard, right, and eventually talent does went out. You know,
- 48:28luck is huge, but talent doesn went out and you go on the back
- 48:31and this is like really revealing as apparent, Like when do I say,
- 48:37like how do I put this? Like like it's okay that you've reached your
- 48:44full potential here, it's okay, maybe you should stop like this not or
- 48:49reevaluate. You know it sounds like just like stop just like reevaluate. Maybe
- 48:52you have like I better watch what I'm gonna say here, But like there's
- 48:58there's one of Addis that my daughter Addison is. I don't think. I
- 49:01don't know if I've said it on the show, but she's actually gonna be
- 49:04getting back into gymnastics. She took a year off. I know I've mentioned
- 49:07that on the show before. She took a season off, so she wanted
- 49:09to explore some other things. She's getting back into it, and she's gonna
- 49:13be on a team with a girl that she was teammates with before. Eric
- 49:17this girl just not as good. But this girl works her tail off,
- 49:22gets extra practice help, like actually gets the private lesson help and stuff,
- 49:29and she's still not as good as my daughter, you know what I mean.
- 49:31And it's like you get to the point where Butsha, my wife and
- 49:35I have talked about, like when do you get to the point where it's
- 49:37like, Okay, are you really enjoying it to enjoy the sport or are
- 49:42you doing it because there's some other driving force that tells you you need to
- 49:45get to a certain level, but you're never gonna get to that level.
- 49:49And I feel bad for this kid because like it's been like six years and
- 49:52it's not gonna happen. But we know this at this point. I know
- 49:55I coach and I see kids that are like really into it, yeah,
- 50:01and they're trying, and you coach him up and you're just like, it
- 50:07ain't gonna happen, but don't stop. Yeah, Like it's just I took
- 50:09a lot of I took a lot out of this threat, like parenting wise,
- 50:14what the sport is. It's an actual job because I'm unemployed, Like
- 50:17I it really hit me like in a couple of places in my personal life
- 50:22right now, and that's why I send it to you. And I was
- 50:23just like, man, this is not heartbreaking. It's actually like kind of
- 50:29uplifting at the same time, like but but leveling, like like wow,
- 50:31this is real life, dude, Like, this guy is not bullshitting.
- 50:35And I think he if he doesn't make the major leagues, I think he
- 50:37kind of might might have found his his groove and uh, and I think
- 50:43that might have been might have been his goal because maybe he thinks like I'm
- 50:45not going to make it so like maybe trying to find something else is damn
- 50:47good storyteller, I'll tell you that. Yeah, on on freaking Twitter here,
- 50:52for God's sake, Steller, If you write a book, I would
- 50:55absolutely read it. All right, Yeah, good deal, All right,
- 50:59buddy, I'm I'm gonna let you go again. Folks, we would appreciate
- 51:02if you would subscribe to the show. We hope you're enjoying the content out
- 51:06there. You know, we were hearing that and I'm not making fun saying
- 51:08this, but there is a specific sports platform that just got rid of all
- 51:14their podcasts out there, and we're probably gonna have a few of those folks
- 51:17on within the next few weeks for sure. Just by the way, I'm
- 51:22just baffled. I'm baffled. We got to talk about this at some point.
- 51:25You know, we're just SB Nation, and we love our sp nation
- 51:30sites here on this show because there are fantastic writers, because SB Nation used
- 51:36to be a place for fans to write and fans who are absolutely passionate about
- 51:42the sports teams that they loved. And of course, at the end of
- 51:45the day, money gets in the way. Greed gets in the way.
- 51:49Some of these podcasts were so damn successful. I'm talking BGN Radio Bleeding Green
- 51:55Nation Radio with Brandon Lee Gout and BLG good friend of the show, not
- 52:00doing it anymore. But it amazes me the short sightedness of the corporate world
- 52:06at times. And of course we know a lot of us who have worked
- 52:08in the private sector. I mostly work in the nonprofit sector now. But
- 52:14at the end of the day, it's all about money, it's all about
- 52:15greed, it's all about you know, bottom lines and all that shit and
- 52:17stuff. But it's really really sad that there's a lot of really good podcasts
- 52:22that are going away. Eric, Yeah, I was in the private sector
- 52:24and have my ass I completely get it. Yes, it's fucking pathetic,
- 52:32so much talent out there and people that know what they're fucking talking about.
- 52:36I listen to the Big Sports podcast and it's kind of incredible how much they
- 52:44don't know for real. Yes, And I hope, I hope, I
- 52:49hope those people find a spot and not like their own spot, like like
- 52:52we have right here, as opposed to like doing research for the majors and
- 52:58like pulling stats and giving those people lines like like the Howard Stern show back
- 53:04in the day, Like Howard wasn't saying those jokes. He had joke writers
- 53:07handing him stuff exactly. I'm hoping these people like find their place because they
- 53:14fucking deserve it, and we've had a lot of them on the show.
- 53:15And that story was really disheartening, and I believe me, I felt it
- 53:21as an unemployed person. Yeah, exact timing, I get it. Yeah,
- 53:25yeah, Look, I said a few weeks ago on the show,
- 53:30I'm honestly forgetting if it was when I had you or len on Eric that
- 53:34you know, we've been approached by companies over the years asking us to come
- 53:37on their platform. That was that was you, right? Yeah, yeah,
- 53:40And believe it or not, I'll say this probably it was probably a
- 53:45good what seven eight years ago or so. BLG actually was trying to get
- 53:52our podcast. He was doing this on his own, was trying to get
- 53:55PSD podcast show onto the SB Nation platform. He was actually trying to do
- 54:00that and we and I had some conversations with one of their guys at the
- 54:05time. I'm honestly forgetting his name, and it did. It ended up
- 54:07not working out because they were like, we don't know how you're gonna fit
- 54:10in too much because we're just niche down with all these teams. We have
- 54:14BGN Radio, the Liberty Bawlers guys, they have their podcast, you know,
- 54:19John Staliness, Justin Klue, Liz Rocher with the Good Fight. When
- 54:22when that podcast was over there, uh, the Hitting Season podcast was called
- 54:27the Felski Files. Back then, anyway, we weren't as niche, so
- 54:30there wasn't necessarily a place for us. And then fast forward this past this
- 54:34past year, at the end of the year, we we got an offer
- 54:37and I was just like, no, man, I want to stay independent,
- 54:38why folks, because things like this happened. Fucking SB Nation just got
- 54:44rid of a ton of great talent, Like I just don't want that happening
- 54:46to us. I just don't so much like Nally Merchant, let'skeep let's keep
- 54:52the punky thos all right, man with the ogs and just really are like,
- 55:00actually, I've had a few people say that, and it's embarrassing in
- 55:04a way. It really is. Fuck that it's cool, Like I dig
- 55:07that we I dig that I do this. I'm gonna be a fucking douchebagger.
- 55:12I dig that I do this. In my basement looking at wood paneling
- 55:15in my six or my doctor j poster right here, yes, right,
- 55:22and all my little uh Eagles Eagles guys right here. Yes, I like
- 55:25that, and I don't want to answer to somebody else exactly. All right,
- 55:30well, why don't we take that break here? Where's it get you?
- 55:36Exactly? Yeah? I work for a private corporation. They fucking went
- 55:39exactly. And you did a damn good job there too. And I'm not
- 55:43just saying like we talk about our jobs, we talk about what we do
- 55:45in our personal life, professional life and stuff. But it's just it doesn't
- 55:49dude, that's like its own show. We should just do our we should
- 55:52just say Fox Sports and we'll just talk about the corporate world, private sector,
- 55:55pollup sector. I will name names, dude. Yes, all right,
- 56:00I'm gonna let you go, buddy at Brick Pollett on Twitter, give
- 56:05Erica follow follow the show at Philadelphia PST and you follow me at Jeffrey Underscore
- 56:09Warren. I'm gonna let you go here. We're gonna take quick break.
- 56:12We'll be back in just a bit with some Phillies talk. All right,
- 56:15we are back. Let's talk about this Philadelphia Phillies team. What they're doing
- 56:17right out of the gate. That's what we're thrown down on the table and
- 56:22now on the table joining us now. He is the editorial director and he
- 56:29writes a lot of great words over at Philliesnation dot com. You can follow
- 56:34him on Twitter slash x at Tim Kelly Sports. He is a great,
- 56:37great follow and again does great work over at Philliesnation dot com. Tim Kelly,
- 56:43Tim buddy, how you doing it? Thanks for jumping on. I'm
- 56:45doing good. It's good to be back. It's great to have you back
- 56:49to talk about this Phillies team right out of the gate here in twenty twenty
- 56:52four. Been an interesting season. I mean, look, this team's getting
- 56:54some criticism in certain areas, some of it well deserves, some of it
- 56:59not well deserved. And they're also doing some good things here and there too,
- 57:02So I mean, let's get into our discussion. And I guess one
- 57:06of the biggest themes of this Phillies early season really seems to be the fact
- 57:09that you know, they are struggling offensively every now and again. I mean
- 57:14today here on April tenth, on Wednesday, the offense ended up coming through
- 57:20as the Phillies got that win over the Cardinals, but like, it's just
- 57:23been a little bizarre to watch some of these power batters at the plate doing
- 57:28minimal damage to other teams at times. So I'm wondering, Tim, do
- 57:31you think this is just the early season thing or is there more going on
- 57:37here than what we may not actually be seeing. What are your thoughts.
- 57:40I would tend to think it's more of an early season thing. But when
- 57:44the Phillies talked this spring, they talked a lot about wanting to get off
- 57:46to a quicker start. Yeah, they're around five hundred, so it's not
- 57:51a disaster, but they haven't jumped out to a start that makes you think,
- 57:53oh, this is the year that they're gonna usurp the Braves and win
- 57:57the divisions. So there's two ways of looking at it. I would say
- 58:01the track recker tells you Nick Castillanos is probably gonna get on track, but
- 58:05he hasn't been very good so far. Bryson Stott has not been good so
- 58:08far. That's pretty surprising to me, and Trey Turner has been very mixed.
- 58:13So I think there's some clear areas where they need to be better than
- 58:15they've been to this point. But I would tend to think that that will
- 58:20come through. I just want these guys getting on base too. You know.
- 58:22Yes, the criticism and perhaps the challenges too that Nick Castianos is having
- 58:29is I think well deserved at times, but there are times like last season,
- 58:32you know, he was getting on base in terms of walking and taking
- 58:36those walks. I want to see a little bit more of that with some
- 58:37of these guys too, when they're looking at certain pitches as well. Again,
- 58:42I kind of think it's coming down to early season, just kind of
- 58:45getting into the flow of things. I think there's a lot of folks out
- 58:46there where you got they need to put push the brakes a little bit here.
- 58:52The weather has been I know the weather every not grey early on,
- 58:54but I don't remember any year where it has been this bad early on.
- 58:58That entire homestad was brutal. Today in Saint Louis was brutal. And it
- 59:06doesn't look like the next couple of days on this ten game homestand are going
- 59:08to be great either. So I think that that's a reality, especially for
- 59:13a team that's predicated on heading for power. Yeah, as we're moving along
- 59:16here, you know, we're a couple of weeks here into the season,
- 59:19and you know, outside of that lack of offense, we were just talking
- 59:22about him, what has been the most surprising, the most surprising aspect of
- 59:28the season so far? Again, this is a team that has only played
- 59:31what ten eleven games here at this point, But what has been the most
- 59:35surprising for you? Even from a positive or negative wherever you want to go
- 59:37with this, what are your thoughts? I would say it's positive that Zach
- 59:40Wheeler has been so good through the first three starts. He has a one
- 59:44to eighty nine YAR. The last few years, he's gotten off to a
- 59:46little slower starts. Last year kind of the first half was slow, the
- 59:50second half he was borderline cy Young level. So in that sense, it's
- 59:53positive. But the Phillies are zero and three in games he started, and
- 59:58he has an zero to two record despite an ERA under two. So it's
- 1:00:01it's surprising obviously that they have not hit for him. I would tend to
- 1:00:06think that they will, but you need to win games Zach Wheelers on the
- 1:00:08mound. It's it's pretty simple formula. Absolutely for me. It's some of
- 1:00:13the ways and in games that we've seen the bullpen kind of perform that's been
- 1:00:20a little bit surprising for me. I mean, I honestly thought this was
- 1:00:22going to be a bullpen that was a top three bullpen, and they may
- 1:00:25be. I have not looked at the numbers. I have not seen any
- 1:00:28of the analytics with regard to this. Doesn't necessarily feel at this point that
- 1:00:31this bullpen is perhaps a top three in Major League Baseball. We've seen some
- 1:00:35good spots and we've seen some crap too, So I think the guy or
- 1:00:39away to me, they're going to get Kirkering back this weekend. It sounds
- 1:00:43like and Matt Strom and Jose Alvarado both had blow ups on opening Day but
- 1:00:47have been very good since then. Jeff Hoffman out a blip on the radar
- 1:00:52first game in Saint Louis and then came back today and was very good.
- 1:00:58So I think generally it's a pretty deep group, but I do still question
- 1:01:01whether they had that one ace level reliever. I think that maybe is an
- 1:01:07area to focus on for the Phillies this summer. Absolutely well. As we're
- 1:01:09moving along here, Tim, you know, so many of us fans are
- 1:01:14saying that Brandon marsh he should be starting just about every day here, if
- 1:01:17not every single day. Based on his performance right out of the gate here,
- 1:01:22I mean after ten games played, he was batting three forty four,
- 1:01:27three home runs, and it's just it was remarkable to see that type of
- 1:01:30baseball play from him this early this season here. What are your thoughts on
- 1:01:35Brandon Marsh here as an everyday starter and how can the Phillies perhaps maybe handle
- 1:01:39his playing time a little better or should they? Well, I think they
- 1:01:43have to give he should be playing every day against righty's, that's obvious.
- 1:01:46I think they have to give him some opportunities here and there against lefties.
- 1:01:50He was better against lefties last year. Previously had been unplayable. But I
- 1:01:54do think it makes sense for those to sometimes be the days where you give
- 1:01:59him rest. And you didn't sign with Marorfield. I know he's gotten off
- 1:02:01to a slow start, but you didn't sign him to play once a week,
- 1:02:05So for now that's probably his best spot to get in. I would
- 1:02:08say there's gonna be a decision probably at the end of the month on Johann
- 1:02:13Rojas, and if Johann Rojas is not here anymore than that opens up even
- 1:02:16more at bats for Brandon Marsh and Christian pache So I think for the time
- 1:02:22being they've handled it pretty well. But I would say one way or another
- 1:02:24things they're gonna have to give and maybe he'll kind of prove that he still
- 1:02:30has some issues against lefties, or maybe he'll prove that he should be playing
- 1:02:32more consistently against them. But he's unquestionably been very good so far. He's
- 1:02:38a good defender, very good defender in left field. Sometimes in center he
- 1:02:42has issues kind of taking command of the outfield, but he has the athleticism
- 1:02:45certainly to play center field. So he's been a very valuable player. And
- 1:02:50really since the Phillies have gotten him, I know they gave up Logan o'hapi,
- 1:02:52who I think is going to be a really good catcher. But Brandon
- 1:02:55marsh has been very good. He really has. And I just a piggyback,
- 1:03:00I guess off what you were just saying with regard to Johann Rojas.
- 1:03:02I've been a huge fan of just like, let's let this kid grow.
- 1:03:06But I think you're right. At the end of this month, I mean
- 1:03:07there's about two two and a half weeks left until the end of April,
- 1:03:12and I find it hard to believe that he may be able to get it
- 1:03:16together. From an offensive standpoint. Of course, we all love his defense
- 1:03:20offensively in the batter's box. My gosh, he just I mean, he's
- 1:03:22had one really nice game, but just other than that, just completely lost.
- 1:03:28And I say, at this point, and I will say this for
- 1:03:31this entire twenty twenty four season, give Brandon Marsh the opportunity to hit against
- 1:03:36lefties at this point where this team is at right now, Let's give him
- 1:03:39the opportunity to continue growing. Yeah, And I think with Rojas, it's
- 1:03:44one thing. If he's hitting two thirty at the end of April, he
- 1:03:46can't be hitting one thirty. I mean, there has to be a level.
- 1:03:50It's great, he's the number nine hitter and he is an A plus
- 1:03:53defender, no disputing that. The play against Ronald Decunya Junior in the playoffs
- 1:03:59last year will be in Phillies history forever. And I think it behooves them
- 1:04:03to try and get him to a point where he is a serviceable offensive player.
- 1:04:08He's not that right now, and at a certain point, I think
- 1:04:12you're not helping his long term development or your short term attempts to win by
- 1:04:16having him out there every day. Because right now I think Christian Pasha is
- 1:04:20a better player than Oh. Absolutely again, folks talking to Tim Kelly from
- 1:04:25Phillies Nation dot com. Give him a follow on Twitter slash x at Tim
- 1:04:30Kelly Sports. He's a great, great follow, great great content over at
- 1:04:32Phillies Nation dot com. And again, moving along here, you know,
- 1:04:36you wrote an interesting piece recently. Again love getting on Philliesnation dot com every
- 1:04:42day just to see what you all are writing about. But your piece recently
- 1:04:46was about what the Phillies are going to do with Spencer Turnball when Tywan Walker
- 1:04:51returns. So I'm wondering if you can kind of get into that a little
- 1:04:55bit here with us, Tim, you know, can you talk about what
- 1:04:58kind of role you think Spencer will have once Taiwan Walker returns to the mound?
- 1:05:02What are your thoughts here? Well, the gist of the piece is
- 1:05:05essentially they don't have to make this decision for a few weeks. I was
- 1:05:10not in Saint Louis, but it sounds like from the different people I've read
- 1:05:13in Saint Louis that the Phillies are going to give Taiwan Walker three or four
- 1:05:16starts in the minor league. So that's close to a month until you have
- 1:05:20to really make a decision on what happens in that time. Taiwan Walker could
- 1:05:25have a setback, Spencer Turnbull could come back down to earth, whatever the
- 1:05:28case is. Most of the times, things in baseball figure themselves out and
- 1:05:32we end up wasting so much time talking about these potential things that never actually
- 1:05:39come into play, and that made the case here. I would say,
- 1:05:42though, I would find it hard to believe when Taiwan Walker comes back that
- 1:05:45he won't be in the starting rotation. He's someone that takes a little while
- 1:05:49to get going, so having him as a reliever doesn't really make sense.
- 1:05:53He's under contract for two more years after this year. I think he's going
- 1:05:57to be in the rotation now, whether that means you go to a six
- 1:06:00man rotation, or Christopher Sanchez goes to the bullpen, which I wouldn't do,
- 1:06:03but who knows, or Turnbull goes back into the bullpen and becomes a
- 1:06:08multi inning option, which I don't think you necessarily have right now. I
- 1:06:12think that there's going to be a solution that works for everybody. And the
- 1:06:15thing to remember here is Turnbull pitched seven starts last year. You missed the
- 1:06:20entire season the year before because of Tommy Johns. So this is not somebody,
- 1:06:25regardless of how Goody looks early on, that's going to pitch one hundred
- 1:06:28and fifty innings and you don't want to burn everything he has available in the
- 1:06:31first two months of the season. So in a way, it could be
- 1:06:34a blessing in the skies to have Taiwan Walker come back. Even if later
- 1:06:39in the season Turnbull ends up in the rotation, you have a way to
- 1:06:44kind of manage his innings, and if you go to the six man,
- 1:06:45you have a way to manage Zach Wheeler, Ranger Schwarz, and Aaron Nola,
- 1:06:49who you hope will be making a deep play helping you make a deep
- 1:06:54playoff run for the third year in a row. It's a really great answer,
- 1:06:59and it just verse A two, I think is what turnball is going
- 1:07:01to help give this team, perhaps in the future, again depending on what
- 1:07:04happens with Tylan Walker. So as we're ending our conversation and discussion here,
- 1:07:10Tim just a straight up question of which player on this team is performing under
- 1:07:15the radar. It may not necessarily be getting the love that they deserve at
- 1:07:19this particular point in this season. What player would that be for you?
- 1:07:23Who's performing under the radar here? I would say Gregory Soto. I think
- 1:07:27he ran into some trouble today in Saint Louis, but generally had been really
- 1:07:30good up to that point, and last year his numbers don't look good.
- 1:07:34He ended up with a four to six one ERA, but I went through
- 1:07:36at this offseason and like eighty percent of his runs that he gave up last
- 1:07:41year came in like five outings. Now those were five bad outings, but
- 1:07:45it gives me an idea. He was a workforce last year, among the
- 1:07:47league leaders in appearances, and I think specifically when he's facing left handed batters,
- 1:07:55he is almost an automatic. So on the days where he didn't blow
- 1:07:58up last year, he was setting the side down in order one, two,
- 1:08:01three, often striking them out. So you've kind of seen glimpses of
- 1:08:05what Sodo can be both in Detroit and last year with the Phillies. I'm
- 1:08:09interested to see as this season goes along what type of production he's able to
- 1:08:13put in, because you see flashes of an elite reliever again, folks.
- 1:08:17Tim Kelly from Philliesnation dot com at Tim Kelly Sports on Twitter slash x.
- 1:08:23My friend, it was great talking to you. Thank you so much for
- 1:08:26taking the time to come on the PSD podcast show. Here get into some
- 1:08:29Phillies talk. I'd love to talk to you down the road, my friend.
- 1:08:31All right, sounds good, what a great, great conversation with Tim.
- 1:08:35And again, folks, as we know, and look, we aren't
- 1:08:40a show of just like Hot Takes all the time. You know, longtime
- 1:08:43listeners, you know that. You know, we don't get into that garbage.
- 1:08:45We don't get into the garbage Philly radio stations stuff, the sports talk
- 1:08:50radio stuff. We just don't do that. It's early in this season.
- 1:08:55There's a lot of guys that are trying to get into I don't necessarily want
- 1:08:58to say baseball shape, but even getting into the rigors of what this baseball
- 1:09:02season is going to be, it's just gonna take some time, I think
- 1:09:05for a lot of these guys, the power hitters on this team, to
- 1:09:09really get into specific form. Who happens sooner rather than later? Of course
- 1:09:13I know we all do, but I do not have any concerns for this
- 1:09:15Phillies team as they're moving along here. They're in a division where you've got
- 1:09:21a lot of different dynamics working in terms of, you know, what's gonna
- 1:09:27be happening with the Braves now that Spencer Strider is out for some time,
- 1:09:30what's gonna happen with that team? What does it dow from a sports psychology
- 1:09:33standpoint to them and ultimately to some of the other teams as well. Just
- 1:09:38one injury it can make a difference in terms of another team, how they
- 1:09:43perform, and how it reflects on your team as well. So it's the
- 1:09:46beauty of baseball, and we're gonna continue following this Phillies team, what's going
- 1:09:50on in the NL East and Major League Baseball in general well well into the
- 1:09:56future. So that being said, folks, it's gonna do it for us
- 1:09:59this. If anything happens to your podcast feed out there, or if you
