- 0:00Speaker 1: That's impossible. Let me tell you what I believe. That
- 0:03Speaker 1: your weakness is not your technique. Yes! Yes! Don't think
- 0:09Speaker 1: you are. Know you are. The Impossible Life Podcast. You're
- 0:14Speaker 1: sitting on a winning lottery ticket. An idea that is
- 0:17Speaker 1: fully formed, fully understood, that sticks. This is the Impossible
- 0:24Speaker 1: Life Podcast. because Nick and I are attempting to live
- 0:28Speaker 1: impossible lives. What we know is that nothing is impossible.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So instead of using impossible as an excuse to not try,
- 0:36Speaker 1: we'll use the pursuit of impossible as an accelerant for greatness.
- 0:41Speaker 1: If something's never been done before, that just means it's unexplored.
- 0:45Speaker 1: If they tell you it's too hard, it's just waiting
- 0:48Speaker 1: to be simplified. Impossible is a default label, used by
- 0:53Speaker 1: uncourageous people, unwilling to take a risk. The real truth
- 0:57Speaker 1: is this. The solution to any impossible task starts with
- 1:01Speaker 1: this question. If I had to, what would it take?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:12Speaker 1: your co-host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at a
- 1:14Speaker 1: man so valuable, when he drives a new car off
- 1:16Speaker 1: the parking lot, it goes up in value. That's right, friends,
- 1:19Speaker 1: the former Navy SEAL, Garrett Unklebach, a man who brings
- 1:26Speaker 1: value everywhere he goes, even if it's the used car lot. Which,
- 1:30Speaker 1: by the way, bro, I need you to drive my truck.
- 1:32Speaker 1: So I'm thinking about selling.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It.
- 1:36Speaker 1: What a great power that would be. I would appreciate
- 1:38Speaker 1: your vehicle. I'd borrow it. GMC wants to hire you, Garrett.
- 1:43Speaker 1: All this union stuff you're doing, just pack it in.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I've got a much easier job for you. All right.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I don't want to spend too much time laughing at
- 1:50Speaker 1: my amazing intro. And yes, I'm being a little bit
- 1:52Speaker 1: self-indulgent saying that mostly because Garrett's very deprecating of them.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But today's episode, man, this is one of those ones
- 2:00Speaker 1: where we sat down to plan and I want to
- 2:02Speaker 1: give you honor straight away, G. I feel like we
- 2:04Speaker 1: tapped into some of the depths of greatness that you
- 2:06Speaker 1: have because you're a Navy SEAL. I'm amped to give
- 2:10Speaker 1: this because what's special whenever you're out there, there's so
- 2:13Speaker 1: much information out there. When you can get access to
- 2:16Speaker 1: something that very few people get access to, you should
- 2:19Speaker 1: sit up and pay attention. I truthfully feel like this
- 2:22Speaker 1: episode is some of that very specific greatness because you
- 2:27Speaker 1: said a while ago, that seal punishment taught you to
- 2:30Speaker 1: follow your training. And I've said this, I've quoted this
- 2:33Speaker 1: many times on the podcast. I've quoted it when I've
- 2:35Speaker 1: talked about what happened with me and my wife is
- 2:38Speaker 1: that you don't rise to the occasion, you fall to
- 2:40Speaker 1: the level of training, right? And I've said that over
- 2:42Speaker 1: and over again. So today we're going to go into
- 2:45Speaker 1: what makes a great training program. And I would hope,
- 2:49Speaker 1: And I have to assume every person out here is
- 2:51Speaker 1: listening to this podcast because they want to be great.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I feel like we would run people who want comfort
- 2:56Speaker 1: and average off very quickly on here, G, because we
- 3:00Speaker 1: are not the be comfortable and God just wants to
- 3:02Speaker 1: be your buddy and make your life better podcast. We
- 3:04Speaker 1: are the follow after Jesus. He is Lord. And it's
- 3:08Speaker 1: not going to be easy, but man, is it going
- 3:09Speaker 1: to be worth it podcast? And so we're going to
- 3:13Speaker 1: get into this today. And I'm just going to encourage
- 3:15Speaker 1: you guys, sit up. pay attention. This is one that
- 3:18Speaker 1: you're going to have to listen to multiple times. I'm
- 3:21Speaker 1: saying that because I plan on listening to it multiple times.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I feel like we're tapping into so much of your greatness, Garrett.
- 3:26Speaker 1: When we were planning this, I was very conscious of that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And so I'm excited about this one. And so let's
- 3:32Speaker 1: just get into it, unless there's anything you want to
- 3:34Speaker 1: add there. Well, I'll just say, you're talking about great
- 3:38Speaker 1: training plans. I'm going to talk about great training organizations
- 3:41Speaker 1: here in a second. But I just want to say,
- 3:43Speaker 1: this is, this is half of this comment is for
- 3:45Speaker 1: me and it's for everyone else listening, but I would
- 3:47Speaker 1: just say loved our prep for this episode. This is
- 3:50Speaker 1: going to be a great episode, but I would also
- 3:52Speaker 1: say we're probably going to come back to this a
- 3:54Speaker 1: little bit more in the future because as we put
- 3:56Speaker 1: all this out, um, we spent a little bit more
- 3:59Speaker 1: time than we normally do in the prep for this
- 4:01Speaker 1: episode because there was a lot of content that we
- 4:03Speaker 1: were developing, but as we were talking about it, it
- 4:05Speaker 1: actually left me thinking we could have, we could have
- 4:08Speaker 1: deleted everything that we wrote here and I might, um,
- 4:11Speaker 1: redo some of this in a different way. So this
- 4:14Speaker 1: is going to be a great episode, but I can
- 4:16Speaker 1: tell you, we're probably going to be coming back to
- 4:17Speaker 1: this because there's, as you were asking me great questions,
- 4:21Speaker 1: it was making me think there's actually a lot more
- 4:22Speaker 1: I want to talk about here.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So great, great training, great training organizations. This is something
- 4:29Speaker 3: I've said before on the show. And I mentioned me
- 4:31Speaker 3: a quick second, G I'm sorry. I'm sorry to interrupt you,
- 4:33Speaker 3: but I want it. Cause I want to, I want
- 4:34Speaker 3: to ask everybody a question out there. Cause I feel
- 4:36Speaker 3: like this is something you have to, you have to understand.
- 4:38Speaker 3: When I say we're tapping into some of the greatness,
- 4:40Speaker 3: we've said it before on here. The Navy SEALs are,
- 4:43Speaker 3: in my opinion, the greatest training organization there's ever been.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Because most organizations rise and fall on the leader leaving.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I'm a Manchester United fan.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We had Sir Alex Ferguson, who's the greatest manager that's
- 4:55Speaker 1: ever lived. We had him for, I think it was
- 4:57Speaker 1: 36 years or 26 years. The best period ever. It
- 5:00Speaker 1: was so enjoyable. It was 26 years. Since he's left,
- 5:04Speaker 1: we have sucked. And it's revealed all the things that
- 5:07Speaker 1: are wrong with the foundation of That's most people's businesses.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So my question to people is like, have you ever
- 5:13Speaker 1: even been part of a great training program? Because most
- 5:16Speaker 1: people go to school. How are the Patriots doing today? Right.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Not so great since Brady left. And we all thought
- 5:23Speaker 1: it was Belichick, but man, it was the combination of them.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And that's most things. So like, so most people's level
- 5:31Speaker 1: of training, the reason I'm saying this, because I want
- 5:32Speaker 1: you to like, what, what will help you? John the
- 5:35Speaker 1: Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus. And it
- 5:37Speaker 1: wasn't that he came and told everybody the son of
- 5:39Speaker 1: God is coming. What he said is repent for the
- 5:41Speaker 1: kingdom of God is at hand. What does that mean?
- 5:43Speaker 1: That means there has to be a humility to change
- 5:45Speaker 1: your mind and realize that Jesus needs to be on
- 5:47Speaker 1: the throne. That's the foundation of our faith is that
- 5:50Speaker 1: if you don't say God, what you say is right.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And you don't give up your right to identify what's right.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You're going to miss so much of our faith. So
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm asking you to approach this episode with a level
- 5:59Speaker 1: of humility to go, you know what? Maybe I've not
- 6:01Speaker 1: been a part of a great training organization because for
- 6:03Speaker 1: most of us, our training is school. And you know
- 6:05Speaker 1: what school teaches you how to do? Teaches you how
- 6:07Speaker 1: to be a good factory worker. If you go back
- 6:09Speaker 1: and look at the foundations of it, look at how
- 6:11Speaker 1: it is. Sit here, be here at this time. The
- 6:13Speaker 1: bell's going to go. You're going to do this. Then
- 6:14Speaker 1: the bell's going to go. You're going to do that.
- 6:16Speaker 1: It is literally training people to just take instruction and
- 6:19Speaker 1: be almost like mindless bots. And there's a lot of
- 6:23Speaker 1: people who will find that upsetting about school. Forgive my generalization.
- 6:26Speaker 1: But it's not training people how to think to go
- 6:29Speaker 1: out and be world changers or to go out and
- 6:32Speaker 1: be those that can create industry. It's teaching you how
- 6:34Speaker 1: to be a great employee. So just have the level
- 6:37Speaker 1: of humility to understand that maybe you've never seen a
- 6:39Speaker 1: great training organization. But what's special about today is that
- 6:42Speaker 1: we're getting from your great industry of being in the
- 6:45Speaker 1: greatest training organization of the world. We're diving into that.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I think it's
- 6:50Speaker 1: an important point. Well, I appreciate that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: And yes, the SEALs have not lived and died on
- 6:55Speaker 3: one person. They have built a great training program, and
- 6:57Speaker 3: we'll get into that. But every great organization I've ever
- 7:01Speaker 3: been a part of, and I put the SEALs in
- 7:03Speaker 3: that category, but there's other ones that I have been
- 7:05Speaker 3: a part of, participated in, studied, and ones that I've
- 7:09Speaker 3: helped build. And what I would say is that every
- 7:11Speaker 3: great organization is a great training organization. And here's what
- 7:16Speaker 3: I mean by that. I look at greatness as the
- 7:19Speaker 3: fulfillment of your entire purpose.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Really, to achieve, it goes back to what we've talked
- 7:24Speaker 1: about on the show before, all the way back in Genesis,
- 7:27Speaker 1: where God said, be fruitful and multiply. Multiply is the
- 7:30Speaker 1: Hebrew word rabah, and that means to become great. And
- 7:33Speaker 1: what is greatness? Greatness isn't just I did stuff. Greatness
- 7:37Speaker 1: is you did everything God put you on the earth
- 7:40Speaker 1: to do. That is you reaching your full potential. Because
- 7:45Speaker 1: how could you be great if you didn't reach your
- 7:46Speaker 1: fullest potential? Greatness isn't about who you are compared to
- 7:49Speaker 1: somebody else.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Greatness is, did you become everything you're capable of being?
- 7:53Speaker 3: And so in the life of an organization, some organizations
- 7:57Speaker 3: land with a massive splash and they achieve great things.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And if you're looking for short-term outcomes, that's not what
- 8:03Speaker 3: this episode is focused on. But if you want to
- 8:06Speaker 3: achieve your greatest potential, if you want an organization to
- 8:09Speaker 3: achieve its greatest potential, you have to build something that
- 8:12Speaker 3: continually gets better. Not just the person gets better, but
- 8:16Speaker 3: And the SEAL teams, you look at SEAL, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: there's always the joke, like this is a SEAL team
- 8:20Speaker 3: joke of guys are like, Oh, you want what buds
- 8:23Speaker 3: class for you to, you know, I was, I was
- 8:26Speaker 3: 286 people go, well, 285 was the last hard class, right?
- 8:29Speaker 3: Like the joke, the joke is that like, all the
- 8:33Speaker 3: older guys are like, well, it was harder for me
- 8:35Speaker 3: than it was for you. And there's some funny things
- 8:38Speaker 3: where it was older in the past, but what is
- 8:42Speaker 3: observably true is that SEALs today are better than SEALs
- 8:45Speaker 3: were 10 years ago. SEALs in the early 2000s were
- 8:48Speaker 3: better than the SEAL operators from the 80s. It's not
- 8:50Speaker 3: saying that the man is better because when guys are
- 8:52Speaker 3: making that joke, they're saying like, I'm tougher than you.
- 8:55Speaker 3: But the observable truth is that SEALs keep getting better
- 8:58Speaker 3: at their job. And that is evidence of a great
- 9:01Speaker 3: training program. It's not that there was one person there
- 9:03Speaker 3: doing everything, making everything happen. They built a program that
- 9:06Speaker 3: continues to get better. This is exactly what Jesus did.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Jesus didn't say like, Hey, I'm going to come here
- 9:11Speaker 3: and I'm going to do everything. And I'm going to
- 9:12Speaker 3: speak to everybody. What did he say to his disciples?
- 9:16Speaker 3: He says, he says, I'm not going to give you fish.
- 9:18Speaker 3: You're not going to help me gather fish. Jesus says,
- 9:21Speaker 3: I'm going to make you fishers of men. He says,
- 9:23Speaker 3: I'm building something with you. That's what he said to Peter.
- 9:26Speaker 3: He says, you're the rock. I'm going to build my
- 9:28Speaker 3: church on you. We're building an organization that's going to
- 9:30Speaker 3: perpetuate for thousands of years, right? And And again, I've
- 9:34Speaker 3: said it before, whether you believe in Jesus or not,
- 9:36Speaker 3: that point is still true. Whether you believe that Jesus
- 9:39Speaker 3: is the son of God, he's the most famous person
- 9:40Speaker 3: who's ever lived. More people know his name and more
- 9:43Speaker 3: people have been impacted by him than any other person
- 9:46Speaker 3: in history. And this is a man who didn't make
- 9:48Speaker 3: it to 40. This is a man who never went
- 9:50Speaker 3: more than a few hundred miles from his home. And
- 9:52Speaker 3: compared to other people in history, how many people did
- 9:54Speaker 3: he speak to? He is small in that regard and
- 9:57Speaker 3: the size of the audiences that he had compared to
- 10:00Speaker 3: many other people in history yet had the greatest impact.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And that is he was living by some of these principles, right?
- 10:05Speaker 3: And that's what we're always trying to do is live
- 10:07Speaker 3: on the principles that God has given us that Jesus
- 10:09Speaker 3: lived by.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That's what we're going to try to tap into today.
- 10:12Speaker 1: What are the principles? What are the elements that make
- 10:15Speaker 1: a organization great? And it's great training organizations. So let's
- 10:19Speaker 1: talk about that. Yeah, I love that, G. I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it is, you know, and to that point that you made,
- 10:24Speaker 1: the last thing he said was exactly what you just said.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Go ye therefore into all the world and make disciples, right?
- 10:30Speaker 1: So it's like now the train.
- 10:33Speaker 3: And he also said, which is like the most radical statement,
- 10:35Speaker 3: if you're someone who's really a student of Christ, one
- 10:38Speaker 3: of the most radical things he said to his disciples.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And one of the last things he said is you'll
- 10:42Speaker 3: do even greater things than I did, which is like
- 10:45Speaker 3: still anyone who's.
- 10:46Speaker 1: A follower of Christ, that's a radical statement.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And I think this is what a lot of people
- 10:50Speaker 1: get wrong in when they look at following Jesus. And
- 10:53Speaker 1: this is where, you know, I don't want to make
- 10:55Speaker 1: any comments on how people enter into their relationship with God.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But I think a lot of times if you have
- 11:01Speaker 1: set this out that this is to make you better,
- 11:04Speaker 1: we put our own idea of better because it is
- 11:06Speaker 1: it is going to make you better, but it's going
- 11:08Speaker 1: to make you better in God's version. So when you're
- 11:10Speaker 1: saying you're going to follow Christ, you're entering into a
- 11:12Speaker 1: discipleship program for life, which means you're signing up to
- 11:16Speaker 1: constantly train. And you see this in the New Testament,
- 11:19Speaker 1: 2 Timothy 3, 16 through 17. I love this scripture.
- 11:22Speaker 1: This is Paul, who was literally the discipler of disciples, man, like,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know, planted more churches than anybody else. This is
- 11:28Speaker 1: what he said. All scripture is breathed out by God
- 11:30Speaker 1: and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for
- 11:35Speaker 1: training in righteousness, that the man of God may be
- 11:38Speaker 1: complete equipped for every good work. Well, hang on. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: thought I was going to get saved and then magically
- 11:44Speaker 1: I was going to not want to do any of
- 11:46Speaker 1: the bad things anymore. And like, you know, I would
- 11:48Speaker 1: just not want to sin. No, no. You're entering into a,
- 11:51Speaker 1: a literally a discipleship program of I'm going to train.
- 11:55Speaker 1: God's going to continue to sanctify me. He's going to
- 11:57Speaker 1: refine me. He's going to bring me to maturity because
- 12:00Speaker 1: God wasn't just after like, Hey, we just need to
- 12:02Speaker 1: change behavior and we're going to get into that more.
- 12:04Speaker 1: But that scripture is really a foundational one for today.
- 12:07Speaker 3: And this is very much of what the Impossible Life
- 12:10Speaker 3: podcast is about. If you don't know the vision and
- 12:13Speaker 3: mission of the Impossible Life podcast, I live by the
- 12:16Speaker 3: visions and missions in my life. The vision for the
- 12:19Speaker 3: impossible life is to shift the mindset of what it
- 12:21Speaker 3: means to be a godly man. And I won't go
- 12:23Speaker 3: into that. We've talked about it on other episodes, really
- 12:25Speaker 3: where that came from. And the mission, which serves the vision,
- 12:28Speaker 3: the mission, of the impossible life is teaching and training men, right?
- 12:31Speaker 3: So we're going to do, we got to teach and
- 12:33Speaker 3: we got to train. And so, so much of this is,
- 12:35Speaker 3: is built.
- 12:36Speaker 1: On the word.
- 12:36Speaker 3: And the greatest outcome that I want to come out
- 12:39Speaker 3: of the podcast is that people would use this in
- 12:41Speaker 3: their discipleship programs, that they would learn how to train
- 12:45Speaker 3: and grow in godliness. But at the same time, what
- 12:47Speaker 3: we're doing all the time is I'm showing you, here's
- 12:49Speaker 3: what the Bible says. And also here's the, here's how
- 12:52Speaker 3: this works. Whether you believe in God or not, God
- 12:54Speaker 3: built a world of order. And so we're going to
- 12:56Speaker 3: both use this as an opportunity for you to grow
- 12:58Speaker 3: in your relationship with God, growing discipleship. But at the
- 13:00Speaker 3: same time, again, whether you believe in Jesus or not,
- 13:02Speaker 3: these things are true. And this is how greatness is built.
- 13:06Speaker 3: So we're going to show you what makes a great
- 13:08Speaker 3: training program. One of the hallmarks of a great training
- 13:12Speaker 3: program is that it doesn't just train one person. Again,
- 13:18Speaker 3: greatness isn't just about you. The purpose of life isn't
- 13:21Speaker 3: about you. And you can take some elements out of this.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I'm going to give those to you where it's like, hey,
- 13:25Speaker 3: I want to achieve this outcome for me.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Great.
- 13:27Speaker 3: We'll show you how to do that. You're going to
- 13:28Speaker 3: be able to use some of the elements for that.
- 13:29Speaker 3: But the hallmark of a great program, right? What did
- 13:32Speaker 3: I say? Great training, great organization is a great training organization.
- 13:35Speaker 3: It exists beyond itself. SEAL training isn't great because, you know,
- 13:39Speaker 3: for 70, SEAL training isn't great because it just made
- 13:43Speaker 3: one dude. But what it has been doing is for
- 13:45Speaker 3: over 70 years, it has continued, you know, it was
- 13:48Speaker 3: formed in 1962. So, continued to refine itself over and
- 13:53Speaker 3: over and over again. And what it's done is each
- 13:56Speaker 3: year it's gotten better. That's one of my MOs, one
- 13:59Speaker 3: of my modus operandi in every organization that I get
- 14:02Speaker 3: the chance to contribute to is, hey, we're going to
- 14:04Speaker 3: be better next year than we are today. Not just
- 14:07Speaker 3: what we built, but the way we build things, who
- 14:09Speaker 3: we are as people. If we're really training correctly, and
- 14:12Speaker 3: this is when you live by the laws of greatness,
- 14:16Speaker 3: you will win.
- 14:17Speaker 1: 100% you will win.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Greatness has an order. Greatness has a way of doing things.
- 14:23Speaker 3: And if you'll live by it, you are destined to win.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And so what I've submitted to in my life is
- 14:28Speaker 3: I'm going to live by the laws of greatness and
- 14:31Speaker 3: it is going to lead me down the path of
- 14:32Speaker 3: greatness is what I want with my life.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So the SEAL training isn't just about one person. Great
- 14:36Speaker 1: training organizations aren't about one person. There's a constant refining
- 14:41Speaker 1: in that organization and it's aimed at a great fruit
- 14:44Speaker 1: in the end. Right. Jesus didn't say, I'm going to
- 14:47Speaker 1: teach her.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I'm going to show everybody how great I am and
- 14:49Speaker 3: get you guys to like me and follow me around.
- 14:51Speaker 1: He says, I'm going to teach you to live like me.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm going to give you this way of thinking. Right.
- 14:55Speaker 1: What you should want in your life and in your family.
- 14:57Speaker 1: It's the way I look at my kids.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I don't look at my kids and say, I'm going
- 15:01Speaker 3: to help you live a happy, healthy life. I said, no,
- 15:04Speaker 3: I have this way of thinking and I'm going to
- 15:05Speaker 3: give it to you. Not just that you can do
- 15:08Speaker 3: what I did, but that in a way that you
- 15:09Speaker 3: can build on it and you'll go further than I
- 15:11Speaker 3: ever did.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It's the same thing Jesus said to his disciples, you'll
- 15:15Speaker 3: do even greater things than I did. So there's a
- 15:17Speaker 3: constant refining that comes out of every great training organization.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so good, G. And I think for a
- 15:25Speaker 1: lot of people, we get asked all the time, how
- 15:27Speaker 1: do I build what you guys have at Mighty Men?
- 15:30Speaker 1: Because Mighty Men is one of the largest men's groups
- 15:32Speaker 1: in America. Yeah. And what people want is they want
- 15:34Speaker 1: us to just give them our handbook, which I've sent
- 15:36Speaker 1: it to people and you can copy our handbook and
- 15:38Speaker 1: not have our same results. And we're going to, when
- 15:41Speaker 1: we get into, there's four keys to a training plan
- 15:43Speaker 1: that make a great train plan that we're going to
- 15:45Speaker 1: get into now. And, and what you just said of
- 15:48Speaker 1: giving them people a way of thinking, giving your kids
- 15:50Speaker 1: a way of thinking, I think it's going to make
- 15:52Speaker 1: sense after you hear the key points. But just know
- 15:56Speaker 1: like the, the purpose of this, yes, you could go
- 15:58Speaker 1: divine design, a great individual training plan. If you listen
- 16:01Speaker 1: to some of these points, but, I think for a
- 16:03Speaker 1: lot of us, you have to realize if it's not
- 16:07Speaker 1: just to train you, if you want a great training
- 16:09Speaker 1: plan and you're like, yeah, but I just want to
- 16:10Speaker 1: train myself. What this means is you're going to have
- 16:13Speaker 1: to go find somebody who's already laid a foundation. Find
- 16:15Speaker 1: a coach, find an instructor, find something that's already got
- 16:19Speaker 1: some fruit and realize you're going to have to pay
- 16:21Speaker 1: a price, whether it's money, time, effort, all three of
- 16:24Speaker 1: those things or even more. Like that's a place where
- 16:26Speaker 1: you need to have the humility to go like, okay,
- 16:28Speaker 1: maybe I don't know. Because we live in such an
- 16:31Speaker 1: individualized society where it's like, I just want to cook
- 16:33Speaker 1: everything for me on demand the way I want it
- 16:36Speaker 1: when I want it. And part of training, and this
- 16:38Speaker 1: is where I think a lot of people leave Mighty Men,
- 16:41Speaker 1: is it's like, why do I don't agree with that?
- 16:43Speaker 2: Good.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Because you don't know everything, right? Like it's with your kids.
- 16:48Speaker 1: When my kids get mad at me, and this is like,
- 16:50Speaker 1: this is for somebody out there. Your kids do not
- 16:52Speaker 1: know what's best. If your kids are pushing back on
- 16:55Speaker 1: your rules, that probably means that your rules are having
- 16:57Speaker 1: the right effect. Because you have to understand that you
- 17:01Speaker 1: do not know best and the level of submission required is,
- 17:04Speaker 1: that's why I said from the beginning about repentance. If
- 17:06Speaker 1: you don't have the humility to accept this, you're going
- 17:10Speaker 1: to be the person who fizzles out and says that
- 17:11Speaker 1: training plan is stupid. If you make everything about you,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you're going to miss it.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Like if you make your entire life about you, you
- 17:20Speaker 3: won't have lived the best life you could possibly live.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Think about physics and the laws of the universe. If
- 17:25Speaker 1: you think that you're the center of the universe, your
- 17:27Speaker 1: laws of physics would be broken, right? Until you realize
- 17:31Speaker 1: you're not the center of the universe, only then can
- 17:33Speaker 1: you observe how things work and then get to the
- 17:36Speaker 1: greatest outcomes. And this is, I mean, a lot of
- 17:38Speaker 1: this comes back to so many biblical elements where this
- 17:41Speaker 1: is the life of Christ.
- 17:42Speaker 3: This is what God's showing us as if you want everything,
- 17:45Speaker 3: you have to be willing to give everything up, right?
- 17:48Speaker 3: And we could go into that more, but let's focus
- 17:51Speaker 3: on what makes a great training plan, right? How to
- 17:54Speaker 3: have great training, how to build a great training program,
- 17:57Speaker 3: four keys here, right? So number one is specificity, okay?
- 18:02Speaker 3: This is the most important thing to start with is
- 18:05Speaker 3: you really have to define the target.
- 18:07Speaker 1: What do you want out of this? And it's a
- 18:09Speaker 1: hard question to answer, okay? What do you really want?
- 18:11Speaker 1: And a lot of people think they want I want
- 18:13Speaker 1: money or I want this mark of achievement. And that's
- 18:17Speaker 1: really not what you want. That's just a milestone to
- 18:19Speaker 1: where you were trying to go. And if you aim
- 18:21Speaker 1: towards that short term point, this is why businesses who
- 18:25Speaker 1: don't do this, they think, well, we want to blow
- 18:27Speaker 1: up to a billion dollar business or a two billion
- 18:29Speaker 1: dollar business in this amount of time. And maybe you
- 18:31Speaker 1: get there. Maybe you don't.
- 18:33Speaker 3: But if you do get there and that was your
- 18:35Speaker 3: only focus, that is where you fail. You fail the
- 18:38Speaker 3: day after that because you weren't, you were not moving
- 18:41Speaker 3: on a path towards a higher goal.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So you must define the target. When you build a plan,
- 18:46Speaker 1: you've got to understand what do you want out of it?
- 18:48Speaker 1: What is this supposed to accomplish? Where are we going
- 18:51Speaker 1: to go? What do I, you know, the seals didn't say, Hey,
- 18:54Speaker 1: we need a bunch of dudes who can shoot bad
- 18:56Speaker 1: guys in the face.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Otherwise we would have spent all of our time on
- 18:59Speaker 1: the range. But what they did is they said, we
- 19:02Speaker 1: need warriors who are problem solvers. So they spend all
- 19:06Speaker 1: this time training you in a level of grit, training
- 19:08Speaker 1: you to think a certain way, building a certain type
- 19:11Speaker 1: of person. And they say, now we'll also teach you
- 19:13Speaker 1: to shoot. So when we throw you into the worst situations,
- 19:16Speaker 1: you also have the skills to accomplish the objective. But
- 19:18Speaker 1: more so, you're the whole person that can achieve any objective,
- 19:23Speaker 1: not just we trained you for a singular mission. In
- 19:26Speaker 1: a business, if you train people to be like a
- 19:29Speaker 1: task monkey, okay, like I can train you how to
- 19:32Speaker 1: do this one specific task, whether it's in sales or
- 19:35Speaker 1: I go teach you to be a CNC operator. If
- 19:37Speaker 1: I just teach you to do this one task, that's great.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Until the task changes, until the world changes, and then
- 19:45Speaker 1: you become nearly useless. All you knew how to do
- 19:48Speaker 1: was the one thing. So it's not, you got to
- 19:51Speaker 1: think about what I really want you to achieve here.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I don't just want you to be able to knock
- 19:55Speaker 1: on a door and sell something to someone. I want
- 19:57Speaker 1: you to be a great salesman such that if you
- 20:00Speaker 1: are knocking on a door or calling a person or
- 20:02Speaker 1: talking to someone in any environment, that you can translate
- 20:05Speaker 1: value to them and move them further along in a transaction.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Not just, I'm going to give you the steps for
- 20:11Speaker 1: this one type of transaction in one specific circumstance. Now,
- 20:16Speaker 1: real quick, that's what you just said, I think is
- 20:19Speaker 1: how most people interpret training is like, I want to
- 20:22Speaker 1: get better at bench press. So I'm just going to
- 20:24Speaker 1: go do like 50. I'm just going to do bench
- 20:26Speaker 1: press every day because that's all they only have the
- 20:30Speaker 1: action of one thing. And it's like, well, now we're
- 20:32Speaker 1: going to move you to incline. But yeah, Well, wait,
- 20:34Speaker 1: hold on. I'm not done inclined. And that's what I
- 20:37Speaker 1: think most people understand. Training is exactly what you said,
- 20:40Speaker 1: the task monkey term that you used. And so this
- 20:43Speaker 1: is a, this is a real shift straight away of like, okay,
- 20:46Speaker 1: we're not just doing one repeatable thing. It's so good. Right.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Let me, let me put this in a biblical perspective.
- 20:53Speaker 1: What is God one out of man?
- 20:55Speaker 3: Yes, God wants obedience, but if all God wanted was obedience,
- 20:59Speaker 3: he would have done that in a different way. He
- 21:01Speaker 3: could have made us entirely obedient or put us on
- 21:04Speaker 3: a path that it was obedience or nothing else, right?
- 21:07Speaker 1: And he could have forced us in that direction. It's
- 21:09Speaker 1: actually not what he's done. God didn't want obedience. Obedience
- 21:13Speaker 1: is a part of it, but what God wanted was children.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So all of those who live their life in a
- 21:17Speaker 1: biblical context, if you get this perspective, what you can
- 21:21Speaker 1: zoom out and see is that everything that God is
- 21:23Speaker 1: doing is he's developing you as children. He doesn't want
- 21:26Speaker 1: you to do a certain thing. He just wants you
- 21:28Speaker 1: to be like him. He wants you to be what
- 21:30Speaker 1: he made you to be. So all of your life
- 21:32Speaker 1: is development towards this way of being, towards the person
- 21:35Speaker 1: that you become. And if you become like him, you
- 21:38Speaker 1: will achieve great things. But if you just live your
- 21:40Speaker 1: entire life focused on one outcome, again, maybe you achieve
- 21:44Speaker 1: that outcome or maybe you don't. What you realize if
- 21:46Speaker 1: you do achieve the outcome is that there's more after that.
- 21:49Speaker 1: And if you've lived everything towards this one outcome, now
- 21:52Speaker 1: you don't know where to go. You don't know how
- 21:53Speaker 1: to take the next step. Man, gee, that is so
- 21:56Speaker 1: deep because I think we've talked about this, that the
- 21:59Speaker 1: purpose of your life is not just to sin less
- 22:01Speaker 1: or to not sin. And I think that we get
- 22:04Speaker 1: so distracted by what you just said, that zoom out
- 22:07Speaker 1: of God wants children. Like that's not just Garrett coming
- 22:09Speaker 1: up with a cool thing. This was revelatory to me.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Romans 8, 28 is the scripture we love because we
- 22:14Speaker 1: go for God makes all things work together for the
- 22:16Speaker 1: good of those who love him and are called according
- 22:18Speaker 1: to his purpose. And we're just like, yes, yes. I
- 22:21Speaker 1: love God. I'm called according to his purpose. So I
- 22:23Speaker 1: know everything's going to work out for my good. And
- 22:25Speaker 1: as you once said, God's definition of good is different
- 22:28Speaker 1: than our definition of good. What the key scripture of
- 22:30Speaker 1: your actual purpose and what to the point that you
- 22:33Speaker 1: just made is found in the next verse of Romans 8, 29,
- 22:36Speaker 1: because it says for those whom he foreknew, let's talk
- 22:38Speaker 1: about us. This is the good. He also predestined to
- 22:42Speaker 1: be conformed to the image of his son in order
- 22:45Speaker 1: that he may be the firstborn among many brothers. Man,
- 22:49Speaker 1: that is a radical shift to what you said. What
- 22:52Speaker 1: did God want out of men? Not a bunch of
- 22:54Speaker 1: obedient slaves. He wanted children. And that's why he raises us.
- 22:58Speaker 1: And that's why we don't start fully, you know, Adam
- 23:00Speaker 1: was the only guy who started off, you know, grown
- 23:03Speaker 1: and developed as far as, as far as I, as
- 23:05Speaker 1: we know. And I say, as far as we know,
- 23:07Speaker 1: because we don't actually know how old Adam was when
- 23:09Speaker 1: God made him. But the point of being all of
- 23:11Speaker 1: us start out as babies. And that's, that's a pattern of,
- 23:14Speaker 1: of a natural supernatural correlation that that is a huge
- 23:18Speaker 1: shift of when you realize that God's developing children and
- 23:21Speaker 1: not just developing obedience soldiers, because if you are an
- 23:24Speaker 1: obedient soldier, you can, you'll struggle to understand God's love.
- 23:27Speaker 1: You'll struggle to understand that he wants to have a
- 23:29Speaker 1: relationship with you. You'll always be going, Lord, what do
- 23:31Speaker 1: you want me to do when God's going, Hey, I
- 23:33Speaker 1: want you just to be with me. I want, you
- 23:35Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like it's so different when you
- 23:36Speaker 1: have that understanding of what God actually wanted is a
- 23:39Speaker 1: huge shift.
- 23:41Speaker 3: And, You know, you can think like, oh, I just want,
- 23:43Speaker 3: I just want a six pack or I just want
- 23:45Speaker 3: to be in shape. And that may be a short-term goal,
- 23:48Speaker 3: but that's actually, if you'll, if you'll ask yourselves the
- 23:50Speaker 3: real question, that's a part of a bigger picture, right?
- 23:54Speaker 1: It's a part of a bigger picture. And if you
- 23:55Speaker 1: hyper-focus on just getting to that one outcome, it may
- 23:58Speaker 1: actually be destroying or eroding the foundation that you needed
- 24:02Speaker 1: to get to where you really wanted to go. If
- 24:04Speaker 1: you just want men to show up, if you're just trying,
- 24:07Speaker 1: if your goal is to get men to show up
- 24:08Speaker 1: to church, maybe you can get them to show up
- 24:09Speaker 1: for a minute. But you're going to be hustling those
- 24:12Speaker 1: dudes around for forever. And if you're doing it in
- 24:14Speaker 1: the wrong way, it gets harder and harder to get
- 24:16Speaker 1: them to show up to church because you're building the
- 24:18Speaker 1: wrong thing.
- 24:19Speaker 3: You've got to think you've got to build the world
- 24:21Speaker 3: where men want to be a part of this because
- 24:24Speaker 3: of how they're growing and developing in their process for greatness.
- 24:28Speaker 3: If you just want employees to do a certain job,
- 24:31Speaker 3: maybe you can get them to achieve that specific task.
- 24:34Speaker 3: But over time, it gets harder and harder to keep
- 24:36Speaker 3: that person focused.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Right? A great organization continues to develop people. And I
- 24:42Speaker 1: can say just a side piece of evidence from that.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I'm still benefiting from the SEAL training organization, right? They
- 24:50Speaker 1: created something that it developed in me and stayed with me.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And it'll stay with me for the rest of my life.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Some of the things that I learned there, that is
- 24:57Speaker 1: evidence of a great training program. All right.
- 25:00Speaker 3: So I would just say on specificity, Right. You need
- 25:04Speaker 3: to know specifically what you want. And you can also
- 25:06Speaker 3: use this. Hey, you can build this around it. Really,
- 25:09Speaker 3: what I want to focus on here is, you know,
- 25:12Speaker 3: in 16 weeks, I want my body composition to be
- 25:14Speaker 3: do this, to be this. I'm not saying that there's
- 25:17Speaker 3: anything morally or ethically wrong about that. You can build
- 25:20Speaker 3: a training program around that. What is most important, though,
- 25:23Speaker 3: is that you clearly understand what is it I want.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And don't buy an outcome that short sides you to
- 25:32Speaker 3: where you really want it to go. If being in
- 25:34Speaker 3: shape is the highest, greatest thing that you want with
- 25:37Speaker 3: your life, you can build a program for that. But
- 25:40Speaker 3: there's probably something that you want on the other side
- 25:42Speaker 3: of that. So make sure you're building towards the greatest outcome.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Very good, dude. Very good. Number two is that it
- 25:51Speaker 1: is measurable.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Okay. We've talked about this seems obvious, but let's talk
- 25:55Speaker 1: about it for a second. We've talked about standards on
- 25:59Speaker 1: this podcast many times. You need to have a definable
- 26:02Speaker 1: standard of like it needs to be measurable. What is
- 26:06Speaker 1: pass fail or what is good, bad?
- 26:08Speaker 3: And sometimes that's that sometimes that's hard to do when
- 26:11Speaker 3: you have something like, well, I want to be as
- 26:13Speaker 3: great as I can possibly be. I want to achieve
- 26:15Speaker 3: everything that God's called me to be. You're aiming towards
- 26:17Speaker 3: the highest outcome. It gets harder and harder to define
- 26:21Speaker 3: what that standard looks like. Let me give you a
- 26:24Speaker 3: great example of that. It's more than just a standard.
- 26:28Speaker 3: You've just got to have the tools that you're able
- 26:31Speaker 3: to measure and observe growth. And I'll give a spiritual
- 26:35Speaker 3: example that is one that's hard to measure. And I'm
- 26:38Speaker 3: going to show you how you can measure something like that.
- 26:41Speaker 3: You can say like people who really get locked into
- 26:44Speaker 3: transformation and I want to hear from God.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I want to know. I want to hear his voice.
- 26:49Speaker 1: How do I know?
- 26:50Speaker 3: How do I measurably know I have more of the
- 26:52Speaker 3: Holy Spirit in my life? Where's my Holy Spirit meter? Hey,
- 26:55Speaker 3: I'm going to go talk to my pastor and ask
- 26:57Speaker 3: him to like, hey, can you score me on what
- 26:59Speaker 3: my level of Holy Spirit walkingness is? There's not really
- 27:04Speaker 3: a way to do that. Yet in scripture, they gave
- 27:06Speaker 3: us Galatians 5. Galatians 5.22, which is the fruit of
- 27:10Speaker 3: the Spirit. And it tells us, right, you might not
- 27:13Speaker 3: be able to put a quantifiable number on what your
- 27:17Speaker 3: Holy Spirit level is. However, there is the fruit of
- 27:21Speaker 3: the Spirit that is the fruit of this, okay? The
- 27:24Speaker 3: goal is not just to pursue fruit, but the more
- 27:26Speaker 3: you walk with the Holy Spirit, the more you have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control,
- 27:33Speaker 3: the more you have these things in your life. This
- 27:35Speaker 3: is the evidence that comes from it. And again, I'm
- 27:38Speaker 3: not going to say, what do I got to do
- 27:39Speaker 3: to make myself more gentle? What do I got to
- 27:41Speaker 3: do to make myself have more love, more joy in
- 27:45Speaker 3: my life? If you chase that, You won't necessarily get there,
- 27:49Speaker 3: but you've got to understand what are the things I'm
- 27:51Speaker 3: going to walk down this path. But what are some
- 27:53Speaker 3: metrics that I have to help me get there?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:56Speaker 1: And the SEAL teams, there were all these different metrics
- 28:00Speaker 1: that they were measuring us on that were actually just
- 28:03Speaker 1: fruit of us developing towards the greater path of being
- 28:07Speaker 1: an incredible problem solving warrior that you could throw into
- 28:10Speaker 1: any situation. Like, what was this like? Or when you
- 28:14Speaker 1: say that, do you mean like running and shooting and
- 28:16Speaker 1: like all the different stuff? Like, cause you guys were
- 28:18Speaker 1: measured on everything, right? Like you guys did time shoots
- 28:20Speaker 1: and there's different things. Those, yeah, those were, those were
- 28:24Speaker 1: all things that we developed in that ultimately led towards, right?
- 28:29Speaker 1: We didn't succeed on every mission, but what the SEAL
- 28:33Speaker 1: teams had was a fruit. And it's why the SEALs
- 28:35Speaker 1: have become more popular today because the more missions you threw.
- 28:40Speaker 3: At them, They had great outcomes on those missions. Didn't
- 28:44Speaker 3: succeed in every mission. Hey, look, this is a filter
- 28:47Speaker 3: I have for life. King David was God's chosen man.
- 28:50Speaker 3: God said, this is my king. He's my guy. I'm
- 28:53Speaker 3: going to show you what a leader looks like. And
- 28:55Speaker 3: even while God's hand was on David's life, David didn't
- 28:59Speaker 3: win every battle. David got his butt handed to him
- 29:02Speaker 3: multiple times in scripture. So it's not necessarily that you
- 29:05Speaker 3: win everything. But it's look at the outcomes we have
- 29:09Speaker 3: today versus the outcomes we had 10 years ago versus
- 29:12Speaker 3: the outcomes we had 20 years ago.
- 29:14Speaker 1: We're continuing to grow. And let me give you another example, right,
- 29:19Speaker 1: of a and I like to use these because it's
- 29:20Speaker 1: just like such a simple business analogy. And not every sale,
- 29:24Speaker 1: not all sales happen this way. Many sales transactions are
- 29:27Speaker 1: more complicated. But a sales guy, a guy goes and
- 29:30Speaker 1: knocks on a door. You could measure sales.
- 29:33Speaker 3: How many times they knock on the door, like how
- 29:35Speaker 3: many door knocks you have, how many encounters you have.
- 29:38Speaker 3: And you could measure like, Hey, here's the work that
- 29:40Speaker 3: you did. But this is the point that I want
- 29:42Speaker 3: to get to. And this is one of the truths
- 29:45Speaker 3: that you have to learn in life is that effort
- 29:49Speaker 3: does not equal outcome. I could train you to go
- 29:52Speaker 3: knock on doors and talk to people. But ultimately, where
- 29:55Speaker 3: I'm trying to teach my sales guys to be is
- 29:58Speaker 3: that you can actually sell things that there are great
- 30:01Speaker 3: outcomes for you. So not just how many doors did
- 30:04Speaker 3: you knock? Cause here's the thing. I can take a
- 30:06Speaker 3: few different sales guys and make all of them knock
- 30:08Speaker 3: a thousand doors. And out of that a thousand doors
- 30:11Speaker 3: we're going and they could, you know, necessarily knock on
- 30:14Speaker 3: the door that I want the way that I wanted
- 30:15Speaker 3: them to. And they could maybe read the script that
- 30:18Speaker 3: I gave them. But out of these men who all
- 30:21Speaker 3: knocked a thousand doors, some men are going to sell
- 30:23Speaker 3: a lot more than others.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Right?
- 30:25Speaker 3: So I'm not just measuring, Hey, can you knock on doors? Really,
- 30:28Speaker 3: what's more important is the development. I need to be
- 30:32Speaker 3: able to break down what are the things that lead
- 30:34Speaker 3: to completed transactions, not just getting you to do reps.
- 30:38Speaker 3: You can rep after rep after rep. And one of
- 30:40Speaker 3: the things we said in the SEAL teams is you
- 30:41Speaker 3: can't miss fast enough. You can shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.
- 30:45Speaker 3: But until you learn how to hit, none of those
- 30:46Speaker 3: shots are worth anything. So, yes, you need the measurables.
- 30:51Speaker 3: You need the measurables that is, hey, I'm putting in
- 30:53Speaker 3: the work. You're not going to sell anything if you
- 30:55Speaker 3: don't knock on any doors.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Yes, but.
- 30:58Speaker 3: More than that, what are the measurables that I have
- 31:00Speaker 3: to look for? And I'm not giving you the answers
- 31:02Speaker 3: to this. You've got to ask these questions yourself. What
- 31:05Speaker 3: are the measurables that I need to really focus on
- 31:07Speaker 3: that don't just lead to attempts, but that lead to
- 31:10Speaker 3: successes that lead to completed touchdowns?
- 31:13Speaker 1: Very good. All right, gee, let's keep moving, man. That's
- 31:15Speaker 1: so good. So just to repeat, number one is specificity.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Define the target. What are you actually trying to train?
- 31:21Speaker 1: What are you training? Number two is measurable. It's measurable outcomes,
- 31:28Speaker 1: but it's also what are the, and it's difficult. This
- 31:33Speaker 1: is how you know you're creating great training. Because again,
- 31:37Speaker 1: let me just give this example again to help it stick.
- 31:41Speaker 1: It's not just that I can get you to knock
- 31:42Speaker 1: a thousand doors. And it takes discipline to do that.
- 31:46Speaker 1: But what I care about is how many sales did
- 31:47Speaker 1: we make out of those 1000 knocks? And if I'm
- 31:51Speaker 1: only training you to knock on the door and make
- 31:53Speaker 1: the attempt, we're not going to get great fruit here.
- 31:55Speaker 1: So what are the other measurables that I need to
- 31:58Speaker 1: be training that lead to completed sales? So look at
- 32:01Speaker 1: in the same way. It's not just, hey, I want
- 32:03Speaker 1: to read my Bible every day. Yes, do that.
- 32:06Speaker 3: But what are the what's the other work that I
- 32:08Speaker 3: need to be focusing on? What's the other work that
- 32:10Speaker 3: I got to measure that actually leads to the fruit
- 32:12Speaker 3: of the spirit?
- 32:13Speaker 1: So good. Number, number three here is sustainable or sustainability.
- 32:21Speaker 3: And this is like, we're going to talk about this
- 32:23Speaker 3: as like the principle of sustainability and understand there are
- 32:26Speaker 3: some things that are not meant to be sustainable and
- 32:28Speaker 3: you need to be, if it is, you need to
- 32:30Speaker 3: be aware of that. Or there's things that you want
- 32:32Speaker 3: to sustain for a long time and you need to
- 32:35Speaker 3: be aware of the things that can break sustainability. Um,
- 32:39Speaker 3: This is something, sustainability is something that you're going to
- 32:41Speaker 3: continually build on, something that you can continually execute on.
- 32:45Speaker 3: You want to design training programs. You want to design
- 32:48Speaker 3: your life in a way that you keep getting better,
- 32:51Speaker 3: that you keep growing. Not that like, hey, I don't
- 32:54Speaker 3: just want my marriage to be great next year. I
- 32:56Speaker 3: want my marriage to get greater every single year. And
- 33:00Speaker 3: a training plan isn't worth very much. if it kills you,
- 33:04Speaker 3: before you actually get to where you want to go.
- 33:07Speaker 3: And you could do all of these things that maybe
- 33:09Speaker 3: work for a season, but you want to win long term.
- 33:13Speaker 3: I dug this one deep out of the well this morning.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I think this is the first thought that I ever
- 33:20Speaker 3: really synthesized for myself.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I have it somewhere.
- 33:24Speaker 3: I've shown it to my wife before, but one of
- 33:27Speaker 3: my eighth grade projects in school was they made us
- 33:30Speaker 3: write a book for the first time, like write your
- 33:32Speaker 3: own book. And it was not, it was not a
- 33:33Speaker 3: long book, but it was a book. They made you
- 33:35Speaker 3: write a book, like, Hey, put some, put your thoughts together.
- 33:38Speaker 3: And I synthesized the parable of the tortoise and the
- 33:43Speaker 3: hare into this thought intensity takes the lead, but consistency
- 33:48Speaker 3: wins the race. I put these dots together this morning
- 33:51Speaker 3: talking to Nick. This was the beginning for me in
- 33:54Speaker 3: eighth grade of learning how to live on a long-term
- 33:56Speaker 3: timeframe orientation. And that parable of the tortoise and the
- 33:59Speaker 3: hare shows it. And there's other elements of wisdom in there.
- 34:03Speaker 3: The tortoise takes off running really hard and everyone says, oh,
- 34:05Speaker 3: the turtle's an idiot. But you know what the turtle is?
- 34:08Speaker 3: Turtle's consistent. The turtle just keeps going, right? And you
- 34:11Speaker 3: need a plan for your growth, for your development, for
- 34:14Speaker 3: your outcome of not just measurable, not just a momentary success,
- 34:20Speaker 3: but a plan for your ultimate greatness in your life
- 34:23Speaker 3: where you can say, I can keep going on this.
- 34:26Speaker 3: I can be consistent in this. I can do this
- 34:29Speaker 3: for a long period of time. An example in my life,
- 34:34Speaker 3: I want to be closer to the Lord every year
- 34:37Speaker 3: than I was last year. And that's a hard thing
- 34:39Speaker 3: to do. We all go through difficult seasons. I'm not
- 34:43Speaker 3: like Billy Graham that I read hours of scripture every
- 34:46Speaker 3: single day. And some of you are. But that's not
- 34:50Speaker 3: the commitment that I'm not saying it's bad if you do.
- 34:52Speaker 3: It's wonderful that you do. What I knew I could
- 34:55Speaker 3: commit to and what I knew would help me walk
- 34:57Speaker 3: down the path I wanted to walk down was I
- 35:00Speaker 3: made a commitment to read scripture every day. And sometimes
- 35:03Speaker 3: that's just a couple minutes. And it's hard to, you know,
- 35:06Speaker 3: if I open scripture for one minute, I'm going to
- 35:08Speaker 3: at least be in there for five or 10 minutes.
- 35:10Speaker 1: And that's the commitment that I make.
- 35:11Speaker 3: But sometimes I'm traveling and I was up till one
- 35:15Speaker 3: in the morning and I got a breakfast with somebody
- 35:17Speaker 3: at seven or 730 the next morning. And I'm going
- 35:20Speaker 3: to try to at least sleep a couple hours and
- 35:22Speaker 3: I got to work out and do all these other things.
- 35:24Speaker 3: But even in days like that, I'm going to squeeze
- 35:27Speaker 3: in at least my five minutes or my 10 minutes
- 35:29Speaker 3: of scripture. I've lived on a commitment since I was
- 35:31Speaker 3: 14 years old. of reading the proverb of the day
- 35:34Speaker 3: every single day. And sometimes that's pretty much all I get.
- 35:37Speaker 3: There's other times where I study for hours, but the
- 35:40Speaker 3: point that I'm making is I have made a commitment
- 35:42Speaker 3: for myself that I can consistently maintain. And more important
- 35:46Speaker 3: than just taking off really hard for a season, like
- 35:50Speaker 3: I'm going to read the Bible in 30 days or
- 35:53Speaker 3: something crazy. I'm not saying that you can't do those things,
- 35:57Speaker 3: but what's more important is that you can live on something,
- 36:00Speaker 3: build a training plan that is sustainable for you. Or
- 36:03Speaker 3: another way of saying it, the, um, what I always
- 36:06Speaker 3: tell people, I said, the best workout plan is the
- 36:08Speaker 3: one that you'll do.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Right.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Not, not what's the greatest workout plan. What's the workout
- 36:12Speaker 3: plan that you'll do. That's a great workout plan. And
- 36:16Speaker 3: then over time, as you continue to grow and develop
- 36:18Speaker 3: what you, you actually improve on what you can continually sustain.
- 36:22Speaker 3: And we'll come back to that here in a minute. Um,
- 36:25Speaker 3: With sustainability, just talking about the law of sustainability here
- 36:28Speaker 3: for a minute, there's these competing elements between your level
- 36:32Speaker 3: of desire and your level of commitment. I'm not saying
- 36:38Speaker 3: that you can make everything a Navy SEAL training program.
- 36:42Speaker 3: And a lot of people think that Garrett's just a
- 36:44Speaker 3: super Navy SEAL guy. Mighty Men's a Navy SEAL program.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Everything I do is a Navy SEAL program. You've misunderstood
- 36:50Speaker 3: me if that's what you think. I have learned things
- 36:52Speaker 3: from a great organization. And I want to teach that
- 36:55Speaker 3: in other places. And you're not going to be a
- 36:58Speaker 3: Navy SEAL for forever. It's a finite period of time
- 37:01Speaker 3: that you're going to live in that program. But they've
- 37:03Speaker 3: built an organization that continually builds into the next person.
- 37:07Speaker 3: You've got to think of when I talk about competing
- 37:10Speaker 3: levels of desire and commitment, this comes back to the
- 37:13Speaker 3: first question of specificity. You've got to really define what
- 37:17Speaker 3: it is that you want. And sometimes you will define
- 37:20Speaker 3: training programs that are not meant to be sustainable. The
- 37:23Speaker 3: only important point is that you're aware of that.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Okay. If you like sign up for a fitness competition
- 37:28Speaker 1: and you say like, I'm going to live like a
- 37:29Speaker 1: psychopath for the next 16 weeks or the next 20 weeks,
- 37:33Speaker 1: you are going to do things that are not sustainable.
- 37:36Speaker 3: And I'm not just saying not physiologically sustainable because there's
- 37:39Speaker 3: people who do choose to live with like bodybuilding competition,
- 37:43Speaker 3: level of fitness, discipline, eating, training, all of that. And
- 37:47Speaker 3: they live it for just, that's their life. That's how
- 37:49Speaker 3: they live it. But that's not what most people want
- 37:51Speaker 3: their life to be about. And when you make those
- 37:53Speaker 3: types of decisions, it has a cost on many other.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Areas of your life. So if you're going to set
- 37:58Speaker 1: off on some, you know, psychopath, maybe SEAL training, good
- 38:02Speaker 1: for you. I love you.
- 38:03Speaker 3: I'll high five you at the end. You just need
- 38:04Speaker 3: to be aware that sometimes those things are not sustainable.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Don't build a program that you thought you were going
- 38:10Speaker 3: to do for forever. That is not something that you
- 38:12Speaker 3: can long-term sustain. If you don't step into that program
- 38:15Speaker 3: with the awareness at the beginning, this is only for
- 38:17Speaker 3: a short period of time. One note of wisdom on
- 38:21Speaker 3: that as well. I step into seasons like that at
- 38:24Speaker 3: times in my life and I have awareness of it.
- 38:26Speaker 3: But one of the things I do to help me
- 38:28Speaker 3: manage costs and other areas of my life, as I
- 38:30Speaker 3: make the people that I do things with and I
- 38:32Speaker 3: make sure the people that I care about are also
- 38:35Speaker 3: aware of this.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Okay. That's good.
- 38:37Speaker 3: I have been, I have been in some difficult seasons
- 38:39Speaker 3: in my life. And one of the keys to doing
- 38:42Speaker 3: hard things is I tell myself, I have not, I
- 38:44Speaker 3: don't have to do this for forever. I just have
- 38:46Speaker 3: to do it for right now. And when you mature
- 38:48Speaker 3: as a leader, one of the things you realize is
- 38:51Speaker 3: that your decisions affect not just you, but other people
- 38:53Speaker 3: around you. And when I've been in these seasons where
- 38:56Speaker 3: I'm on something that is not necessarily sustainable for the
- 38:59Speaker 3: rest of my life, I make sure that people around
- 39:02Speaker 3: me understand the same thing. Because if you don't communicate
- 39:05Speaker 3: to them, they're going to think like, oh, well, you
- 39:07Speaker 3: just gave up on me. You quit on me. You
- 39:09Speaker 3: don't treat me the way that you did before. One
- 39:11Speaker 3: of my friends who trains for triathlons, I said this
- 39:13Speaker 3: to him one time of, hey, Make sure, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 3: when you're going through this ridiculous level of training program
- 39:19Speaker 3: and discipline that you're communicating with your spouse. Hey, this
- 39:23Speaker 3: isn't for forever. This may hurt some of our relationship
- 39:26Speaker 3: in the short term, but we're not going to be
- 39:28Speaker 3: here for forever.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:30Speaker 3: So this is really about understanding sustainability. And the other
- 39:34Speaker 3: piece of sustainability is really what you want in a
- 39:37Speaker 3: program is what is the minimum amount? This isn't being lazy.
- 39:42Speaker 3: And by the way, I love the thought where Bill
- 39:44Speaker 3: Gates says he hires lazy people. And you misunderstand what
- 39:48Speaker 3: he's saying in this, but he says he hires lazy
- 39:50Speaker 3: people because he says they're good at their jobs.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:53Speaker 3: They have figured out what is the minimum. Like, you
- 39:56Speaker 3: don't want a lazy attitude person. He's calling high achiever
- 40:00Speaker 3: lazy people, not just someone who does nothing. But he's saying,
- 40:03Speaker 3: where's the guy who's figured out this is exactly what
- 40:07Speaker 3: it requires and nothing else to get to a great outcome?
- 40:11Speaker 3: And so part of sustainability is you designing your training
- 40:15Speaker 3: in a way that this is exactly what I need
- 40:17Speaker 3: to do. And I'm not just beating myself up and
- 40:21Speaker 3: hazing myself and making myself do all of these extra
- 40:23Speaker 3: things that don't necessarily... result in great rewards, right? What
- 40:28Speaker 3: is it that produces results? And don't spend time just
- 40:31Speaker 3: beating yourself up if it's not developing you in a
- 40:34Speaker 3: certain way. So it's not being overly punishing. It comes
- 40:37Speaker 3: back to the specificity and the intentionality of, I want
- 40:41Speaker 3: to design the program that does exactly what I need
- 40:43Speaker 3: it to do and nothing else. Don't be adding in
- 40:46Speaker 3: all of this extra pain for the sake of, well,
- 40:49Speaker 3: cause what that can turn into is a little bit
- 40:51Speaker 3: of hype, right?
- 40:52Speaker 1: Like look how hard I beat myself up. Right. And
- 40:54Speaker 1: you feel good.
- 40:55Speaker 3: You get this dopamine reward of like, look how hard
- 40:58Speaker 3: I hazed myself, but it's not sustainable and it doesn't
- 41:01Speaker 3: lead to great outcomes.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I think what you, the way you phrase it, G
- 41:05Speaker 1: was you said the minimum amount of standards. And I
- 41:07Speaker 1: think that might surprise some people and they're like, wait,
- 41:09Speaker 1: Navy SEAL guys telling me not to have 400 standards
- 41:11Speaker 1: for every, it's like, no, minimum amount of standards means
- 41:14Speaker 1: that you're efficient and it means that everything is tied
- 41:16Speaker 1: to a why, because you can standard yourself to death. So,
- 41:20Speaker 1: so I know exactly what requires success because when you,
- 41:24Speaker 1: when you aim to do great things, it's very hard.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Don't make it harder than it has to be. That's,
- 41:30Speaker 3: that's really the principle of sustainability.
- 41:33Speaker 1: All right. And we, so we've got, we've got sustainability.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Let's get to the last piece. This is like a
- 41:37Speaker 1: longer tools and tactics, but it's only because there's so
- 41:39Speaker 1: much to unpack. And so we didn't want to shortchange
- 41:41Speaker 1: you guys. Okay, last piece here.
- 41:44Speaker 3: And again, all of what we're doing here, what I'm
- 41:47Speaker 3: doing so often, and we're going to come back to training,
- 41:50Speaker 3: and this will turn into more tools and tactics episodes
- 41:53Speaker 3: on a training plan where we get a little bit
- 41:55Speaker 3: more specific. We did lean a little bit more heavy
- 41:57Speaker 3: on the mindset, but I'm laying some foundations so we
- 42:00Speaker 3: can come back to this later. Because what I want
- 42:02Speaker 3: in all of this isn't just to tell you what
- 42:04Speaker 3: to do, but tell you how to do it yourself.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Yes. It's what Jesus did. It's what they did with us.
- 42:10Speaker 3: They didn't say, here's how you assault this building with
- 42:13Speaker 3: this amount of enemies around it in a desert environment
- 42:15Speaker 3: in the middle of the night. They taught us how
- 42:18Speaker 3: to do that mission or this mission or any other mission.
- 42:21Speaker 3: They gave us all the tools there. And so I'm
- 42:23Speaker 3: trying to give you the tools so that you can
- 42:26Speaker 3: build a great training program.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Okay. And then here's number four. Number four is that
- 42:31Speaker 1: there's a level of progression. right?
- 42:34Speaker 3: One of the things that I love to talk about
- 42:37Speaker 3: is mastery of basics. If you ever get the privilege
- 42:39Speaker 3: of coming to Mighty Men, some of you who listen
- 42:41Speaker 3: to this show, you're there every week. And I love
- 42:43Speaker 3: getting to meet people from the show. You come from
- 42:46Speaker 3: North Carolina, you come from Oregon, and you made a
- 42:48Speaker 3: trip to come down here and spend a weekend with
- 42:50Speaker 3: Nick and I. I love getting to meet you guys.
- 42:52Speaker 3: If you ever come on a Saturday, you'll hear me
- 42:55Speaker 3: say the same thing I say Every single Saturday, right?
- 43:00Speaker 3: And I start by giving this analogy of, hey, when
- 43:02Speaker 3: we got on to, we stepped onto the range in
- 43:05Speaker 3: the SEAL teams, we didn't, the first thing we did
- 43:08Speaker 3: wasn't something we'd never done before. We didn't say, okay,
- 43:10Speaker 3: today we're going to learn how to do barrel roll shooting.
- 43:13Speaker 3: You're going to, you're going to, you.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Know, dive into a barrel roll and take a shot
- 43:16Speaker 1: at the same time.
- 43:17Speaker 3: And I'm, I'm making an extreme analogy because that's what
- 43:19Speaker 3: people see in the movies.
- 43:20Speaker 1: And they think that's what you do. Or, or today
- 43:22Speaker 1: we're going to practice, um, sliding backwards down a staircase
- 43:26Speaker 1: on our back and shooting an enemy pursuing us. We
- 43:28Speaker 1: never practiced any of those things. Well, what we did
- 43:32Speaker 1: every time we got on the range is we practiced
- 43:34Speaker 1: the basic fundamentals. We did some of the same things
- 43:37Speaker 1: every single time. So we started Mighty Man. We did
- 43:39Speaker 1: some of the same things every time. But the point
- 43:42Speaker 1: here is in progression. And I'm going to break down
- 43:44Speaker 1: some of the pieces of progression that I'll give an
- 43:46Speaker 1: example really quick. As they in SEAL training, like the
- 43:49Speaker 1: first thing they do is like, here's the most basic test.
- 43:53Speaker 1: One of the things that is required here in the
- 43:55Speaker 1: program is you got to have a high amount of
- 43:56Speaker 1: grit factor. You got to be a really tough dude.
- 43:59Speaker 1: And so Hell Week is really the first major test
- 44:01Speaker 1: that you go to. It's a dumb test, meaning you
- 44:04Speaker 1: don't have to be smart. Like you could have an
- 44:06Speaker 1: IQ of 17 and make it through Hell Week. Right.
- 44:09Speaker 3: You're maybe not that low, but you could have a
- 44:12Speaker 3: pretty low IQ and make it through Hell Week. There's
- 44:15Speaker 3: not a lot of intellectual challenges. It's what amount of
- 44:18Speaker 3: grit do you have?
- 44:19Speaker 1: Okay. And then they build on that and they go
- 44:20Speaker 1: to the next test. And that's pool comp. Pool comp
- 44:23Speaker 1: is grit plus attention to detail.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:27Speaker 3: We know you're like everyone who makes it past hell week.
- 44:29Speaker 3: And there are, there are people who make it past
- 44:31Speaker 3: hell week and they don't graduate as a Navy SEAL.
- 44:33Speaker 3: But those people who made it through hell week for
- 44:35Speaker 3: the rest of their life, they know like I have
- 44:37Speaker 3: a high amount of grit. You have passed that test,
- 44:39Speaker 3: but it goes on to the second test, which is
- 44:41Speaker 3: grit plus something else.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 44:43Speaker 3: And I'm just using that as an example of this
- 44:45Speaker 3: is progression. I want a training program that, Then I'm
- 44:48Speaker 3: going to take one skill. I'm going to prove I've
- 44:50Speaker 3: got this. Now I'm going to build on to the
- 44:52Speaker 3: next thing.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Okay. I want to break down progression into three categories here.
- 44:57Speaker 1: The first really progression category, think discipline.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:02Speaker 3: This is if we relate this to fitness or to
- 45:04Speaker 3: a basic job, you've got to have the ability to
- 45:07Speaker 3: show up on time. You know, if it's a workout,
- 45:09Speaker 3: like if I'm your fitness trainer, don't hire me as
- 45:12Speaker 3: your fitness trainer. There's way better people than me. But
- 45:14Speaker 3: if you hired me as your fitness trainer, I'm going
- 45:16Speaker 3: to say, look, show up on time, show up hydrated,
- 45:19Speaker 3: show up rested. You don't have to be intelligent to
- 45:21Speaker 3: do that. You just that's that's discipline. That's obedience. Do
- 45:24Speaker 3: what I need you to do. But any of you
- 45:26Speaker 3: who are disciplined, you understand that there are levels of discipline.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Step one is like those basic things show up on time,
- 45:32Speaker 3: show up hydrated. They did the same things to us
- 45:34Speaker 3: in basic SEAL training. Be where I need you to
- 45:36Speaker 3: be on time with the gear I told you to
- 45:38Speaker 3: be there with. And it's what they tell you in
- 45:39Speaker 3: SEAL training. SEAL training is easy. Just do what we
- 45:42Speaker 3: tell you to do when we tell you to do
- 45:43Speaker 3: it and you'll graduate. That's a discipline question. Now, it's
- 45:47Speaker 3: very hard, but it's can you do it? Can you
- 45:49Speaker 3: do what you tell yourself to do? So there's there's
- 45:52Speaker 3: a level of progression and discipline in your training program.
- 45:55Speaker 3: There's a second type of progression and there's a progression
- 45:58Speaker 3: in your fundamentals. And working out, this is aerobic capacity.
- 46:03Speaker 3: This is muscular development. If you're a basketball player, I
- 46:07Speaker 3: can teach you to dribble on day one. Like that's
- 46:09Speaker 3: level one skill of dribbling. But I know how to
- 46:12Speaker 3: dribble a basketball, but there are NBA players that they
- 46:15Speaker 3: dribble basketballs too. And well, Honestly, the NBA is not
- 46:19Speaker 3: a good analogy because I think dribbling and ball skills
- 46:21Speaker 3: has gone backwards, but that's a side point. The players
- 46:26Speaker 3: in the 90s had way better dribbling and basketball fundamentals
- 46:30Speaker 3: than the way that players do today. The game's progressed
- 46:32Speaker 3: in the wrong direction, not going to go down that
- 46:34Speaker 3: rabbit hole. But you get the point that I'm making
- 46:37Speaker 3: is that there's fundamentals, but you've got to progress.
- 46:39Speaker 1: In those fundamentals.
- 46:40Speaker 3: I can teach you the fundamentals of how, like there's
- 46:43Speaker 3: five skills that I teach you to shoot a pistol
- 46:45Speaker 3: or shoot a rifle, but you got to progress in
- 46:47Speaker 3: those fundamentals. So there's progression in those. And then the
- 46:50Speaker 3: third piece, and we could just kind of like, we'll
- 46:52Speaker 3: make a CrossFit analogy here, whether you like CrossFit or not,
- 46:55Speaker 3: it is a nice, wholesome system.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 46:57Speaker 3: And so they're asking you to do the same thing.
- 46:59Speaker 3: show up on time. They're going to develop you in
- 47:01Speaker 3: the fundamentals of aerobic capacity, of muscular growth. Then you're
- 47:05Speaker 3: going to start to learn a lot of technical skills.
- 47:07Speaker 3: You're going to do some practice in bear crawls. You're
- 47:10Speaker 3: going to do grip strength. You're going to do deadlifts.
- 47:12Speaker 3: You're going to do a bunch of core work. You're
- 47:14Speaker 3: going to learn how to do handstand pushups. And then
- 47:17Speaker 3: eventually all of these skills come together to learn how
- 47:20Speaker 3: to walk on your hands, right? But the point of
- 47:22Speaker 3: CrossFit is not, hey, I know how to walk on
- 47:24Speaker 3: my hands. The point of CrossFit, or at least the
- 47:26Speaker 3: original point of CrossFit, that sport has changed a little
- 47:28Speaker 3: bit too. The original point of CrossFit was how do
- 47:31Speaker 3: we build a fully well-rounded, extremely capable athlete? And what
- 47:36Speaker 3: happens in that, that's supposed to be the end goal,
- 47:39Speaker 3: the end desire of CrossFit. How do we build the
- 47:42Speaker 3: most well-rounded, fully capable athlete? CrossFit was originally born out
- 47:46Speaker 3: of special operations. That's what they wanted. We need a
- 47:49Speaker 3: guy who can do everything and do anything. And what
- 47:51Speaker 3: there is, is there's progression in all of these things.
- 47:54Speaker 3: You don't show up to CrossFit and say, we're going
- 47:56Speaker 3: to become great handstand walkers. If that was your only goal,
- 48:00Speaker 3: you should spend a bunch of your time walking on
- 48:02Speaker 3: your hands. But if your goal is to be a
- 48:03Speaker 3: well-rounded athlete, you learn that I have to develop in
- 48:07Speaker 3: all of these areas. I have to develop in my discipline.
- 48:09Speaker 3: I have to develop in my fundamentals, just aerobic capacity
- 48:12Speaker 3: and muscular strength. And there's more to it than that.
- 48:14Speaker 3: I'm oversimplifying. And then I've also got to have a
- 48:17Speaker 3: progression in my fundamentals and each one of my skills.
- 48:21Speaker 3: In SEAL training, it was, hey, we're going to develop
- 48:24Speaker 3: your grit, right? It's just how tough are you? And
- 48:27Speaker 3: I can tell you what I thought was I was
- 48:29Speaker 3: way tougher as a SEAL operator than I was as
- 48:32Speaker 3: a BUD student. But I was really tough as a
- 48:34Speaker 3: BUD student, and that was my maximum grit. My grit
- 48:37Speaker 3: grew over time. The more things that I went through
- 48:39Speaker 3: and the longer that I maintained this level of grit,
- 48:42Speaker 3: my baseline of grit continued to go up. And then
- 48:46Speaker 3: they teach you how to think a certain way. Then
- 48:48Speaker 3: they teach you a bunch of basic skills, patrolling, shooting, jumping, swimming,
- 48:53Speaker 3: gear management, all these things. And when you do all
- 48:56Speaker 3: of that, it turns into a world-class assaulter. But if
- 49:02Speaker 3: I could take Nick out on, Nick and I could
- 49:04Speaker 3: go to a shoot house. And if I did an eight-hour,
- 49:07Speaker 3: 10-hour course with Nick, I could teach Nick how to
- 49:11Speaker 3: clear a room. But Nick is not ready to be
- 49:14Speaker 3: a SEAL team assaulter because he has not been through
- 49:17Speaker 3: the full training program that is a well-roundedness towards this
- 49:21Speaker 3: final development of what do I really want. So the
- 49:24Speaker 3: progression is built on what we started with in the beginning,
- 49:27Speaker 3: which is the specificity. What do I really want.
- 49:29Speaker 1: This to be?
- 49:30Speaker 3: And I can, if you're putting all these pieces together,
- 49:33Speaker 3: maybe you're a discipleship leader, you're a business coach, you're
- 49:38Speaker 3: a trainer, you do some level of a training program.
- 49:41Speaker 3: What you're going to start to put together here is
- 49:43Speaker 3: you realize, okay, maybe I'm not getting the outcomes that
- 49:46Speaker 3: I want out of my training organization because I've set
- 49:49Speaker 3: the wrong goal for my training. Hey, I just want
- 49:52Speaker 3: this one thing. But really, you've got to look further
- 49:54Speaker 3: down the road. Look out to the horizon of what
- 49:57Speaker 3: do I want this training plan to be? What do
- 49:59Speaker 3: I fully want it to accomplish? And ultimately, what this
- 50:03Speaker 3: leads to is a level of adaptation. Adaptation is like
- 50:07Speaker 3: the fullness of progression. What used to be heavy for you,
- 50:11Speaker 3: what used to be hard for you, it's not hard anymore.
- 50:15Speaker 3: As you grow in the gym, 225 might be a
- 50:18Speaker 3: lot for you on bench, but once you do it,
- 50:20Speaker 3: then you get to two reps. Then you get to
- 50:22Speaker 3: warming up. I'm not here anymore, but this is where
- 50:24Speaker 3: I used to be. I used to walk into the
- 50:26Speaker 3: gym and my warmup set, I started with 225 on
- 50:30Speaker 3: the bar and did 20 reps. That was also when
- 50:32Speaker 3: I worked out for three hours, six to seven days
- 50:34Speaker 3: a week. But the point being is that there's an
- 50:37Speaker 3: adaptation of all of your skills. And this is a
- 50:41Speaker 3: wholesome growth. Instead of just saying, hey, I've got this
- 50:44Speaker 3: one skill.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I'm really strong. It's all of this led towards the
- 50:48Speaker 1: greatest outcome. I want to.
- 50:51Speaker 3: kind of end today's lesson with this thought, okay? This
- 50:55Speaker 3: is a promise that I can give you. I'm just
- 50:57Speaker 3: going to ask you to not put a timeline on it.
- 51:01Speaker 3: When I showed up to a SEAL team, I thought
- 51:06Speaker 3: I had it all figured out until I met the
- 51:09Speaker 3: guys that had it all figured out. Now, what's interesting
- 51:12Speaker 3: is we had been through the same training program and
- 51:14Speaker 3: that's what's cool. You can look at another SEAL and
- 51:16Speaker 3: it's like, you've learned the same things that I've learned.
- 51:19Speaker 3: But these guys had a little bit more real world
- 51:21Speaker 3: experience than I did. I learned all the same rules
- 51:25Speaker 3: of room clearance. But I watched this happen for myself
- 51:28Speaker 3: as a new guy, the other people in my platoon.
- 51:30Speaker 3: And then I watched it happen later on in other
- 51:32Speaker 3: platoons where I was training other people. And I watched
- 51:34Speaker 3: people come to the same magical click. What I'm telling
- 51:37Speaker 3: you is if you build a training plan correctly and
- 51:40Speaker 3: you say, hey, I just want to grow. I want
- 51:42Speaker 3: to develop. I'm leading towards this great outcome. You'll get
- 51:46Speaker 3: to this place where this is what they were ultimately
- 51:48Speaker 3: training us for. I don't want to teach you how
- 51:50Speaker 3: to clear this one room. I want to teach you
- 51:52Speaker 3: how to clear anything. And when new guys would show
- 51:55Speaker 3: up to a team, they would struggle. It's like, man,
- 51:58Speaker 3: I know all of the rules, but I keep getting
- 52:01Speaker 3: stuck on a problem. And I walk into this room
- 52:02Speaker 3: that I've never seen before. And I think I know
- 52:06Speaker 3: what to do, but I'm not sure. And there's got
- 52:08Speaker 3: to be a level of belief in your training and
- 52:10Speaker 3: a level of courage to move forward, where when you've
- 52:13Speaker 3: built a great training program, you say, I'm just going
- 52:15Speaker 3: to keep moving forward. And this magical click happened for
- 52:18Speaker 3: every single guy where they finally believed in their training
- 52:21Speaker 3: and they stepped into that room that they had never
- 52:24Speaker 3: seen before. And they trusted their training and they just
- 52:27Speaker 3: responded to the problem. Even though it was something they
- 52:29Speaker 3: had never seen before, they were able to just put
- 52:32Speaker 3: all of their pieces together. It wasn't that the guys
- 52:35Speaker 3: who had more experience than us, that they had had
- 52:38Speaker 3: different training. It's that they had trained for so long.
- 52:41Speaker 3: They learned how to rely on their training. And this
- 52:43Speaker 3: is one of the things that I've said before that
- 52:45Speaker 3: Nick said he really appreciated. I'm not trying to be
- 52:48Speaker 3: a person who can do everything. I want to be
- 52:51Speaker 3: a person who's capable of doing anything.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:54Speaker 1: So I've developed myself in a way that any problem
- 52:57Speaker 1: that's thrown at me, I have the pieces to solve
- 52:59Speaker 1: that problem. Not I know the answer to every equation,
- 53:03Speaker 1: but I am someone who can solve any problem. That's
- 53:05Speaker 1: the training program that they built for us. And I
- 53:07Speaker 1: promise you, if you build a great training program, this
- 53:10Speaker 1: is the magical click that you're going to have for yourself.
- 53:14Speaker 3: It's like having an MBA, right? You went to, you know,
- 53:17Speaker 3: you got a Columbia MBA, you got a Harvard MBA,
- 53:21Speaker 3: but you've never built a business. You know, all of
- 53:24Speaker 3: the right things. You just haven't done it yet. But
- 53:27Speaker 3: the more, if you trust your training, you actually know
- 53:30Speaker 3: all of the answers, but only when you've come from
- 53:32Speaker 3: a great training program.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Thank you very much for listening, guys.
