- 0:01Speaker 1: In this corner, standing at 6'5, weight class unknown, but
- 0:04Speaker 1: hailing from the city of sin, put your hands together
- 0:07Speaker 1: for Jamison Welch. And in this corner, standing at 5'10,
- 0:10Speaker 1: weighing in at * * * pounds, and coming to
- 0:14Speaker 1: us from his super secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona,
- 0:18Speaker 1: put your.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Hands together for Luis Montemayor. Thank you.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Welcome back to the episode of Mixed Company Podcasts. Not
- 0:29Speaker 3: sure if it's going to be short or not, but
- 0:31Speaker 3: we are back. Another week, a lot of fight action,
- 0:34Speaker 3: a lot of fight news. Of course, I'm going to
- 0:36Speaker 3: have the show. I'm Jameson, joined by Luis. Luis, what's
- 0:39Speaker 3: going on, man?
- 0:40Speaker 4: Well, Jameson, first things first, before we get into the boxing,
- 0:43Speaker 4: we're recording this on a Tuesday on the day that
- 0:45Speaker 4: Dolly Parton passed away. Big loss at 80 years old.
- 0:49Speaker 4: You know, she's very, very talented, but also very outspoken for,
- 0:52Speaker 4: you know, a lot of different kinds of people, working
- 0:54Speaker 4: class and all that. So, you know, Shout out to Dolly.
- 0:56Speaker 4: I'm not a big fan of country music at all,
- 0:58Speaker 4: but she's one I'll give a pass to. But shout
- 1:01Speaker 4: out to her. Vaya con Dios. But yeah, the big
- 1:04Speaker 4: news that we want to talk about today is the
- 1:06Speaker 4: fight between Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez over the weekend.
- 1:10Speaker 4: You know, I'll start. I was unimpressed with Rolly's performance
- 1:16Speaker 4: for a very specific reason. He came out. I was
- 1:19Speaker 4: ready to give him all the credit in the world
- 1:20Speaker 4: at round five when he started kicking Teofimo's ass. It
- 1:23Speaker 4: made him bleed. Blood was everywhere. He was really being
- 1:27Speaker 4: very aggressive. And then he slowed down the pace. He
- 1:32Speaker 4: should have gone in for the kill. He let Teofimo
- 1:35Speaker 4: become aggressive at the latter half of the fight. And
- 1:38Speaker 4: I think very clearly, Roley lost that fight on points.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Of course, he said that he was robbed, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:45Speaker 4: We'll get into more of that, but Please let me
- 1:47Speaker 4: know what you thought about the fight up last Saturday.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So here's the thing.
- 1:54Speaker 3: As a boxer, you have to know what side of
- 1:55Speaker 3: the card you're on, and you have to know how
- 1:58Speaker 3: you're going to win said fight. Every boxer knows deep
- 2:01Speaker 3: down inside, or your camp knows deep down inside, how
- 2:05Speaker 3: you have to win said fight. That's just how it goes. Like,
- 2:07Speaker 3: you know going in, like, hey, this is what you
- 2:09Speaker 3: got to do. Hell, sometimes you got to know you're
- 2:12Speaker 3: not winning by decision. Roley's not in a box that's
- 2:14Speaker 3: going to beat Tiafema by decision.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It's not going to happen. It's just not. I don't care.
- 2:18Speaker 3: It's not going to happen. Roley had a chance to
- 2:23Speaker 3: end the fight. He did not end the fight. That
- 2:27Speaker 3: was that.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Now, I definitely agree that Roley didn't have a good
- 2:32Speaker 4: chance to beat Teofilo by decision. But what is it
- 2:35Speaker 4: about these two in this specific fight that makes you
- 2:38Speaker 4: say that? Because Roley was the champ. He had the belt.
- 2:41Speaker 4: And we've always known that the refs and the judges
- 2:44Speaker 4: favor the champ. Telvimo was the challenger here. He's the
- 2:47Speaker 4: one who moved up in weight. So in this case,
- 2:49Speaker 4: why would you say that Roley definitely had to get
- 2:51Speaker 4: a knockout?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Because he's the B-side. Roley, you got to think about
- 2:55Speaker 3: it like this. We're never going to buy a pay-per-view
- 2:59Speaker 3: with him being the feature guy on it. You know
- 3:01Speaker 3: what I mean? I think we're like that. He is
- 3:03Speaker 3: the B-side. He's the guy that keeps the fight card filler,
- 3:08Speaker 3: which is a very valuable role. He gets paid for it,
- 3:10Speaker 3: which is fine. But he's not a guy you're going
- 3:12Speaker 3: to build You're not selling out a 20,000-seat arena to
- 3:16Speaker 3: the role lead.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's just not going to happen.
- 3:18Speaker 3: So when you have a guy like that, he has
- 3:21Speaker 3: to understand his role.
- 3:23Speaker 2: He has to understand his situation.
- 3:25Speaker 3: When you've got to go for broke, you've got to
- 3:26Speaker 3: go for broke.
- 3:27Speaker 2: You're not here to play around.
- 3:30Speaker 3: If you're going to try to win this fight and
- 3:32Speaker 3: change that fortune, you've got to close the show at
- 3:35Speaker 3: that time when it presents itself.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We've seen it happen many times. This ain't nothing new.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It happens.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But with that being said, there's no way There is
- 3:44Speaker 3: absolutely no way in hell that he allowed that round
- 3:50Speaker 3: to end without putting Teofimo out. Once that happened, we
- 3:54Speaker 3: kind of knew that it was over. And then Teofimo
- 3:57Speaker 3: got his bearings back. And then that was kind of
- 4:00Speaker 3: that at that point.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Yeah. And, you know, last episode before the fight, we
- 4:04Speaker 4: predicted that it would probably go the distance. And we
- 4:06Speaker 4: predicted a Teofimo win. Neither of us were really convinced. uh,
- 4:10Speaker 4: think thought that Roley would, uh, was a very, very,
- 4:13Speaker 4: had a very high chance of winning. Uh, we were
- 4:15Speaker 4: skeptical about it. I was ready to, you know, come
- 4:18Speaker 4: out here, do another mea culpa, um, and say, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 4: I was totally wrong on Roley. This guy is a killer.
- 4:24Speaker 4: He absolutely kicked, you know, uh, showed that he's got
- 4:26Speaker 4: the goods after that round five, but that's all he had.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Like he, yeah, he just really sold down the pace
- 4:33Speaker 4: when he should have kept it at that notch. And,
- 4:36Speaker 4: I believe that he kind of rocked Teofimo early on
- 4:39Speaker 4: in like round two or three as well. So he's
- 4:41Speaker 4: got the power. Obviously, his performance in round five showed,
- 4:45Speaker 4: you know, that he had the capability to catch Teofimo
- 4:48Speaker 4: and hurt him. So then why stop? You know, he
- 4:53Speaker 4: did say at the end of the, you know, the
- 4:55Speaker 4: interview afterwards, the press conference, that a lot of other fighters,
- 4:58Speaker 4: you know, get criticized for, or sorry, they get praised
- 5:01Speaker 4: for doing the stick and move, stick and move, and
- 5:02Speaker 4: that he gets criticized for it. And he thinks that's unfair.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I do agree with that. So I'm not criticizing him
- 5:07Speaker 4: on that. I'm saying that, you know, you had him.
- 5:10Speaker 4: You had him. And you let him go.
- 5:13Speaker 2: No, stick and move is one thing. Look here, man.
- 5:17Speaker 3: When you're the underdog in a fight, you have a
- 5:21Speaker 3: window to close the show, you close the show.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Ain't no ifs, ands, and buts.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Ain't no excuses. If you got to go from broke
- 5:26Speaker 3: to where you get dropped, then so be it. But
- 5:29Speaker 3: you have an opportunity, a small chance of opportunity. You
- 5:32Speaker 3: have to take it. He failed in doing so. And
- 5:35Speaker 3: in failing in doing so, this is what happened.
- 5:37Speaker 2: It sucks. It's unfortunate. But these are the breaks. With
- 5:41Speaker 2: that being said, Roley's going to fight again. He'll have
- 5:43Speaker 2: other fights. That's fine.
- 5:45Speaker 3: However, he missed a shot. It happens to the best
- 5:49Speaker 3: of them. But he missed a shot. And when you
- 5:52Speaker 3: miss your shot in this game, it costs you. That's
- 5:54Speaker 3: just how it goes, man. It's unfortunate. But that is
- 5:57Speaker 3: just how it goes. But I don't really want to
- 6:00Speaker 3: hear any excuses. You know, he's supposed to also be
- 6:02Speaker 3: in shape. Great shape to where And you have the
- 6:05Speaker 3: opportunity to go for broke because you have that in
- 6:07Speaker 3: the tank.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You know what I mean? There's a lot of things
- 6:09Speaker 2: that post-fight I didn't like. I haven't liked at all.
- 6:13Speaker 3: But at the same time, you know, be minus fighters
- 6:17Speaker 3: and be minus fighters.
- 6:19Speaker 2: They are who they are.
- 6:20Speaker 3: You know, we kind of have to expect that from them.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You know, we kind of have to expect like, hey,
- 6:24Speaker 3: at the end of the day, they are who they are.
- 6:26Speaker 3: And it sucks to say it like that. But that's
- 6:28Speaker 3: just what it is.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and I really don't believe that, you know, Broly's
- 6:33Speaker 4: going to be a main event fighter going forward. I mean, yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 4: I guess the best we can hope for him is
- 6:39Speaker 4: he'd be on other cards. He'd be, what we said before,
- 6:41Speaker 4: the second or third name on that poster. But I
- 6:46Speaker 4: don't see him getting another chance at, you know, another champ,
- 6:49Speaker 4: another belt, another win, like the opportunity they had this Saturday, right?
- 6:53Speaker 4: What do you think?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean, man, I don't know. That's the thing.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Who else?
- 6:59Speaker 2: Who could he fight?
- 7:01Speaker 4: That's another thing, yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Who could he fight now? I mean, let's say he's
- 7:06Speaker 2: not going to fight Ryan again. He's not going to.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Fight Tia Fimo again. It feels like Haney's waiting for
- 7:11Speaker 3: a bigger fight. I don't see the name. I don't
- 7:16Speaker 3: see it. I don't see it.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Like, Roley's not going to fight Shakur. So, I don't know.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I don't know. We have to wait and wait around.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But also, too, Roley is who he is, man. He'll find.
- 7:28Speaker 3: He'll be in a couple more fights going down the line,
- 7:30Speaker 3: so he'll find somebody. This is not going to be
- 7:31Speaker 3: a big name. The thing is, it'll be like the
- 7:33Speaker 3: second or third fight away from the main event type
- 7:36Speaker 3: of deal going forward.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It won't be a co-feature. It won't be a part
- 7:40Speaker 2: of the actual fight card itself. It'll be there, though.
- 7:44Speaker 2: It'll be like throwing in parsley. It's throwing in there.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Just sprinkle, sprinkle Roley in there for a little bit
- 7:50Speaker 4: of extra. I know somebody who literally thinks Parsley is
- 7:55Speaker 4: called Parsley. The most worthless, uh, seasoning ever. So like,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I hope it's not in that.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I'm not calling it worthless. Like that. There is value.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Like all due respect, like there is value of guys
- 8:06Speaker 3: who fight the good fight, who, you know, show up,
- 8:09Speaker 3: show up in shape, willing to fight.
- 8:11Speaker 2: There is value in that.
- 8:12Speaker 3: However, there is always a way you can go from
- 8:15Speaker 3: that to a elite guy. Or he's getting elite checks.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And he missed that window Saturday.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Yeah, agreed. I don't want to keep harping on him
- 8:25Speaker 4: too much. Because we said before, we both said we
- 8:27Speaker 4: like Roley personally. And he is a very talented fighter.
- 8:30Speaker 4: But yeah, his attitude during the entire fight of just
- 8:34Speaker 4: trying to be stone-faced and answer one or two words
- 8:37Speaker 4: at a time for the interviewer. I was like, stop it, Roley.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Stop it. You are not that guy.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That's not you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I didn't like it. He was doing something out of
- 8:46Speaker 3: his character. He's known for saying the crazy stuff. He's
- 8:48Speaker 3: known for being him. So him doing all the extras, nah,
- 8:52Speaker 3: that wasn't going to work.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I like him because he's kind of like, he's silly.
- 8:54Speaker 4: He's kind of funny. You know, he's a good storyteller.
- 8:57Speaker 4: He's engaging. He's got a good sense of humor. And
- 9:00Speaker 4: he's going out there just being like, I'm here to
- 9:02Speaker 4: kick some ass.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm going to win. Yeah, that's it.
- 9:04Speaker 4: That's all I got to say. I'm like, stop it.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Absolutely unbelievable, you know, character change for him. That's just
- 9:11Speaker 4: not who he is.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And it wasn't necessary either. That wasn't necessary. No one
- 9:16Speaker 3: asked for this. No one asked for this at all.
- 9:19Speaker 2: At all. Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 4: So it's a bummer. Like I said, I was very
- 9:24Speaker 4: willing to give him all the credit in the world.
- 9:26Speaker 4: He just couldn't do it. But let's talk about the
- 9:28Speaker 4: winner here. Teofimo has said straight up no to a rematch.
- 9:33Speaker 4: There's no rematch clause in the contract there. So he's
- 9:36Speaker 4: not required. And he says he's got three more fights
- 9:39Speaker 4: with DAZN, who he signed with, and he wants to
- 9:42Speaker 4: be undisputed. So Let's see. He's a welterweight now. The
- 9:46Speaker 4: other three welterweight belt holders at the moment are Ryan Garcia,
- 9:50Speaker 4: Devin Haney, and Liam Parrow. So, you know, I think
- 9:53Speaker 4: they're all more exciting fights than Rowley, to be quite
- 9:56Speaker 4: honest with you.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 4: What's your take on that? tail female fighting these guys?
- 10:01Speaker 4: Are you, is that an exciting thing for boxing? Are
- 10:03Speaker 4: we going to get a lot of interesting?
- 10:06Speaker 3: That'd be interesting for various reasons, but I mean, him
- 10:10Speaker 3: and Haney fighting doesn't, it's okay. Paro fighting is fine. Like,
- 10:15Speaker 3: I mean, it keeps people active and it's also, I
- 10:18Speaker 3: don't think it's a, a major deal in a sense, right?
- 10:21Speaker 2: So win, lose, or draw, I don't see.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Teofil was in a weird spot because he lost to
- 10:27Speaker 3: the number one guy basically in the sport, but especially
- 10:30Speaker 3: in the division. He lost to that guy pretty handily.
- 10:33Speaker 3: So him doing anything else but beating that guy doesn't.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Really do much.
- 10:36Speaker 3: You know what I mean? He's kind of stuck in
- 10:39Speaker 3: a way. Because let's say he fought Haney. He beats Haney,
- 10:42Speaker 3: then what? You know what I mean? He's in a
- 10:45Speaker 3: very weird spot. Same time, he's not going to rematch Shakur.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Him and Ryan would be interesting because of everything going on. However,
- 10:53Speaker 3: no one, I think we value Ryan's antics over his
- 10:58Speaker 3: actual boxing at this point in time. So I don't
- 11:02Speaker 3: really know. That's a good question. I don't really know
- 11:05Speaker 3: what would be next for Tia Fimo.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, if his plan is to fight all
- 11:10Speaker 4: these three guys in three fights and go for all
- 11:12Speaker 4: the belts, like, hey, I'll take it. You know, I'm excited.
- 11:15Speaker 4: It's probably the best option that he has right now. Um,
- 11:19Speaker 4: plus keep in mind, you know, he went from, uh,
- 11:21Speaker 4: light welterweight to welterweight, I believe. Um, after he lost
- 11:25Speaker 4: to Shakur, he moved up. So now he's a three
- 11:27Speaker 4: division champion. Uh, I I'm, I'd be very curious. I mean,
- 11:31Speaker 4: I think, yeah. Uh, here's another thing to remember is
- 11:34Speaker 4: that Ryan Garcia is the belt holder right now, but
- 11:36Speaker 4: he's fighting Conor Benn. That could absolutely change in September.
- 11:39Speaker 2: So, uh, I don't know.
- 11:41Speaker 4: I would probably, um, try to lean toward a Garcia
- 11:43Speaker 4: win on that one, but we will talk about it
- 11:45Speaker 4: as it gets closer. But, um, There's a very good
- 11:48Speaker 4: chance that Teofimo Lopez could be fighting Conor Benn instead
- 11:51Speaker 4: of Ryan if his plan is to go undisputed. And
- 11:54Speaker 4: I'd be interested in that.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I mean, it seems to be that after a loss,
- 12:00Speaker 4: a very clear definitive loss to Shakur, I think his
- 12:04Speaker 4: prospects are a lot better off and he still seems
- 12:06Speaker 4: to be in a better position than like Rowley having
- 12:08Speaker 4: lost to Teofimo. That makes sense, right? True, true. Yeah,
- 12:12Speaker 4: nobody's talking about Teofimo being the second or third guy
- 12:14Speaker 4: in the fight.
- 12:15Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Right now, right now. But, yeah, I don't know. He
- 12:21Speaker 4: still looked great in the ring. You know, even though
- 12:22Speaker 4: he got caught a couple times, Teofimo did. You know,
- 12:25Speaker 4: still was moving very fast. And, obviously, when he was
- 12:29Speaker 4: becoming the aggressor again in the second half of the fight,
- 12:33Speaker 4: I very clearly saw– I disagree with Roley. I do
- 12:36Speaker 4: not think it was a robbery or unfair or any
- 12:37Speaker 4: of that.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no.
- 12:38Speaker 3: No, no.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He just got beat. He's not the better boxer, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: that's okay.
- 12:44Speaker 3: But again, going into fights, that's why having a good corner,
- 12:48Speaker 3: an experienced corner that's real with you is very, very
- 12:51Speaker 3: key because we've seen it both ways. We've seen guys say, hey,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you need a knockdown right now. You need a KO
- 12:57Speaker 3: right now or else you're not going to win this fight.
- 12:59Speaker 3: And we've seen it the other way where the corner's
- 13:01Speaker 3: very passive. Hey, keep doing what you're doing. Nah, you're
- 13:04Speaker 3: down eight rounds of two. Don't keep doing what you're doing.
- 13:06Speaker 3: But we've heard that in the past. So for me,
- 13:10Speaker 3: when I think of situations like that, you want as
- 13:16Speaker 3: much honesty as possible. And people who understand, hey, even
- 13:20Speaker 3: if the fight's close, you're not winning here. You're not
- 13:24Speaker 3: winning this fight for various reasons. So you need to
- 13:28Speaker 3: take up another level and end the fight before it
- 13:29Speaker 3: goes to the cards. So there's a lot of things
- 13:31Speaker 3: like that, but that's how it goes.
- 13:32Speaker 2: That's the sport.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and another thing you just reminded me of that
- 13:36Speaker 4: I was thinking at the beginning of the fight, it
- 13:37Speaker 4: was I'm not going to say fully snoozy because, you know,
- 13:40Speaker 4: fighters are taking their time to, you know, feel each
- 13:42Speaker 4: other out. But I said to the group chat, too,
- 13:45Speaker 4: Roley needs to let his hands go after about the
- 13:48Speaker 4: third round or something. And then he did. And I
- 13:50Speaker 4: was like, OK, are we seeing a Roley 2.0? You know,
- 13:55Speaker 4: listening to his corner, I believe they did tell him
- 13:57Speaker 4: his trainer was like, let those hands go. You're not
- 13:59Speaker 4: doing it enough. And we just saw like a peak
- 14:03Speaker 4: and then a crash from him.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Are guys conditioned well? Are guys slacking in that department?
- 14:10Speaker 3: It makes you think about a lot of things because
- 14:12Speaker 3: to be honest with you, there's really no excuse to.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Not be prepared. You know what I mean? That's why
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm always very curious when it comes to these things.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I'm very, very curious because something just doesn't quite add up.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Why are you struggling?
- 14:27Speaker 3: As a boxer, especially in the early rounds, one thing
- 14:28Speaker 3: around 9 or 10, I totally get it. Round 5,
- 14:32Speaker 3: you should have enough energy to go for the kill
- 14:35Speaker 3: There's no excuse.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, and in terms of specifically, I'm talking about the
- 14:39Speaker 4: sticking and moving strategy. That does work, and I've had
- 14:44Speaker 4: a couple guys do that to me in sparring, and
- 14:45Speaker 4: it's really frustrating as shit. And when you get frustrated
- 14:48Speaker 4: while sparring or boxing, that's when you can make mistakes
- 14:50Speaker 4: and get caught. So I understand that. But we're talking
- 14:53Speaker 4: about a strategy that you use when being aggressive is
- 14:57Speaker 4: very clearly working for you in the middle of the fight.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:00Speaker 4: You know what I mean? At that point, yes, you
- 15:02Speaker 4: should be told, Do that shit again and Teofimo might
- 15:05Speaker 4: not walk out of here, you know, might not go
- 15:08Speaker 4: the distance. But, yeah, it's hard. It's funny. I remember
- 15:12Speaker 4: the announcer saying something like, I'm not even going to
- 15:14Speaker 4: speculate what was in Roley's head tonight, what was going
- 15:17Speaker 4: on in there.
- 15:17Speaker 2: You can't. You can't. You cannot. You can't.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Maybe he thought that he had it cinched up, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 4: at the end. Maybe this is one of those cases
- 15:25Speaker 4: where open scoring would have helped and Roley would have
- 15:27Speaker 4: been like, shit, I don't actually have it.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Could have. I mean, you know what? That is a
- 15:31Speaker 3: good point, right? Open scoring can help. But again, that's
- 15:34Speaker 3: my biggest thing is this. Like, if I'm a boxer
- 15:37Speaker 3: and I have a team of boxing heads around me,
- 15:39Speaker 3: I don't think I need open scoring. I think I
- 15:41Speaker 3: know what it is. I think I know where I'm at.
- 15:42Speaker 3: But you're right. I think open scoring would have helped
- 15:44Speaker 3: him there. But again, at the end of the day,
- 15:46Speaker 3: it was two different class of fighters. Tiafimo is an
- 15:49Speaker 3: elite guy or close to an elite guy. Rowley's kind
- 15:52Speaker 3: of a run-of-the-mill guy at this stage, and that's okay.
- 15:54Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and overall, I'll say, you know, it was an
- 15:58Speaker 4: entertaining night of boxing. You know, the fight before that,
- 16:01Speaker 4: Yonley Hernandez, guy from Cuba, looking great, kicking ass. His opponent, oh, sorry,
- 16:07Speaker 4: Varone from Argentina, you know, he was taking some punishment,
- 16:11Speaker 4: went the distance, and I was like, I respect this
- 16:13Speaker 4: Argentinian guy. You know, he took a lot of punishment
- 16:16Speaker 4: from Yonley Hernandez. So, overall, you know, I I wanted
- 16:19Speaker 4: what I wanted out of a night of boxing, a
- 16:21Speaker 4: couple of great fights. I was very entertained. So, you know, yeah, I,
- 16:25Speaker 4: at the end of the day, I wasn't really like, uh,
- 16:28Speaker 4: rooting really hard for either Rolly or Teofimo. I just
- 16:30Speaker 4: wanted to see a good fight. So I was, I'm not,
- 16:33Speaker 4: I'm not going to complain, you know, but, uh, yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 4: let's see what happens with, uh, Teofimo's next decision. And
- 16:40Speaker 4: in the meantime, let's talk about a couple of fights
- 16:41Speaker 4: we got coming up, uh, this weekend specifically. So this
- 16:45Speaker 4: guy and Rolly, I don't believe we've mentioned him or
- 16:47Speaker 4: at least we have maybe in passing, but Moses, he's
- 16:50Speaker 4: getting a lot of hype, heavyweight. I believe his record
- 16:54Speaker 4: is 14 wins with 12 knockouts, no losses. And he's,
- 16:59Speaker 4: you know, a lot of people are talking about as
- 17:00Speaker 4: the next big heavyweight name, very young guys. And like
- 17:05Speaker 4: his early twenties, I think it's like 21 or 22
- 17:07Speaker 4: or something like that. So do you know anything about
- 17:10Speaker 4: this guy, Jameson? Have you heard anything or seen any
- 17:12Speaker 4: fights at all?
- 17:13Speaker 3: I don't know much, but I don't know much. I mean,
- 17:16Speaker 3: I need to research a little bit more. But I've
- 17:19Speaker 3: heard the name, I've heard a little bit, but nothing much.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Because here's the thing, I don't want to talk on
- 17:24Speaker 3: my ass here and be held accountable, so I'd rather not,
- 17:27Speaker 3: but I need to do some more research.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Yes, and I feel the same way. I've seen clips
- 17:32Speaker 4: here and there, and like I said, a lot of
- 17:33Speaker 4: the boxing chatter is bringing him up as the next
- 17:36Speaker 4: big thing, the guy. But this is one, and with
- 17:41Speaker 4: Saturdays and the fights in the UK being during the day,
- 17:44Speaker 4: it's always kind of hard to catch it. This time
- 17:46Speaker 4: I'm going to make like every concerted effort to watch
- 17:49Speaker 4: this guy fight because he's fighting Filip Hergovich. And I
- 17:53Speaker 4: just want to see if he's going to live up
- 17:54Speaker 4: to the hype or not. I will say it is,
- 17:56Speaker 4: you know, I believe his like, I think his mom
- 17:59Speaker 4: is like, his father's Nigerian and his mother's Slovakian. So,
- 18:04Speaker 4: which is an interesting combination. Yeah. But yeah, so we've,
- 18:11Speaker 4: I guess it's kind of a weird way to put this,
- 18:13Speaker 4: but like, Who's going to claim him?
- 18:18Speaker 2: If he has an ounce of black, he's going to claim.
- 18:21Speaker 2: We don't play that. One drop rule. We don't play that.
- 18:24Speaker 3: If you've got some African blood in you, you are us.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Now, I will say, you better embrace your black side.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Don't be one of them that don't embrace the black
- 18:35Speaker 3: side until it's beneficial for you. If you embrace it,
- 18:42Speaker 3: we will be there in full support. We will buy fights.
- 18:46Speaker 3: We will fly to fights. We'll buy tickets. Oh, no.
- 18:49Speaker 2: So, yeah, he'll claim us. He'll probably claim us. Okay, okay.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Yeah, because he's, like I said, he's Eastern European, and
- 18:55Speaker 4: he lives in the UK. Of course, that doesn't mean, obviously, you.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Know, they're... Oh, it means a lot. It means a lot.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Normally, those don't... Those get kind of tricky because those...
- 19:04Speaker 3: They like to stay over there for a reason.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'll put it that way.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Okay, okay. Interesting. Yeah, I mean, I... I'd just be
- 19:10Speaker 4: very curious to see if he does become a big
- 19:12Speaker 4: name and the fandom that he's going to get. But also,
- 19:15Speaker 4: being half black, there's going to be a lot of
- 19:17Speaker 4: hate as well. I'm sorry, this is going to be true.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Not being pure white, let's be honest.
- 19:22Speaker 3: It's a different hate, though. It's not like the Mexican
- 19:26Speaker 3: hate when you're Mexican-American from Mexico. It's a different hate.
- 19:29Speaker 3: We hate on people just because. We hate on people
- 19:31Speaker 3: because your fight should have been a knockout in round
- 19:35Speaker 3: four and it went the distance. Or we don't like
- 19:37Speaker 3: what you're wearing. Or we don't like how your girl looks.
- 19:39Speaker 3: There's different versions of hate on our end. But all
- 19:42Speaker 3: we do expect, there's a big beef right now between
- 19:45Speaker 3: black people from America and black people from everywhere else.
- 19:48Speaker 2: So he would just add to it as best as
- 19:49Speaker 2: he's really good. So yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Interesting. I actually was not very familiar with that side
- 19:54Speaker 4: of it. I mean, I know that in general, yes,
- 19:58Speaker 4: there's a divide.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I'll be one better.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Black folks in America really don't claim an anthem, Joshua,
- 20:04Speaker 3: like that. We rocked with Lennox because he was good. Like,
- 20:08Speaker 3: Lennox Lewis was nice, but he's Jamaican. He spent a
- 20:11Speaker 3: lot of time in England.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I get all that. That's fine.
- 20:14Speaker 3: But we, you know, there's guys we may have preferred
- 20:17Speaker 3: over Lennox, but we rocked with Lennox, though. He just
- 20:19Speaker 3: came out at the wrong time because Holyfield, Tyson, a
- 20:22Speaker 3: couple other guys. But he was respected very well amongst
- 20:26Speaker 3: us here. But Anthony Joshua, like, think about it. Wilder's
- 20:31Speaker 3: a C-plus fighter, a C-plus boxer. And I'm not saying
- 20:35Speaker 3: he's accoladed. I'm just saying he's a boxer. I know
- 20:38Speaker 3: how powerful, I know what he does, right? But as
- 20:40Speaker 3: a boxer, I can see plus B minus guy. He's
- 20:43Speaker 3: a regular guy, box wise. He is well more liked
- 20:48Speaker 3: and loved than Anthony Joshua is.
- 20:51Speaker 4: I can see that. I can definitely, I can understand that, yes.
- 20:55Speaker 4: He's from the South as well.
- 20:56Speaker 3: He's from Alabama, so it's way different. But also, it's
- 20:59Speaker 3: one of those things too, like, you can be from
- 21:01Speaker 3: where you're going to be from, but if you're not
- 21:03Speaker 3: going to embrace your blackness, then it's hard to have
- 21:07Speaker 3: black fans that are from the States that aren't boxing purists.
- 21:12Speaker 3: There's a whole different thing about Anthony Johnson probably has
- 21:15Speaker 3: more black women fans because of how he looks, not
- 21:18Speaker 3: because of anything he says or does.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I'll put it that way. Got it.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Yeah, that makes sense. No, that's really fascinating for me,
- 21:24Speaker 4: you know, being outside looking in. And here's the thing,
- 21:27Speaker 4: you know, people always say like, oh, you're always bringing
- 21:29Speaker 4: up race, this and that. It's like race exists in
- 21:31Speaker 4: boxing and it's inseparable.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I'll do one better. Without race, we don't have a sport.
- 21:37Speaker 3: I'm going to be 100% honest with you. We're past
- 21:42Speaker 3: the glory years of boxing. We're still a prevalent sport.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Big boxing matches just up there with anything else. However,
- 21:48Speaker 3: without race and boxing, we don't have a lot of big...
- 21:53Speaker 3: As great as Terrence Crawford is and was, it took
- 21:57Speaker 3: Canelo at the end of his prime or whatever to
- 22:01Speaker 3: bring out his biggest payday. Terrence Crawford's an undefeated champ
- 22:05Speaker 3: who did what he did And he was the B-side
- 22:09Speaker 3: of a fight because Canelo was Mexican.
- 22:12Speaker 2: That's what it is. There's no other way to explain it.
- 22:15Speaker 3: It's the reason why I want to say Tyson versus
- 22:18Speaker 3: McNeely is like a top five or top ten pay-per-view
- 22:23Speaker 3: or gate or whatever. This is how it is. This
- 22:25Speaker 3: is how it's always been. So if you take out race,
- 22:29Speaker 3: then yeah, boxing is not the same. And I will
- 22:32Speaker 3: never talk bad about my Mexican brothers and sisters because
- 22:35Speaker 3: they support the sport when everyone of theirs is going,
- 22:40Speaker 3: especially like you mentioned, if they're from Mexico, like they're
- 22:44Speaker 3: from Mexico, Mexico, then they come out in full force.
- 22:49Speaker 3: But people who have not been out here during a
- 22:50Speaker 3: fight weekend, they will never understand because there's a certain
- 22:54Speaker 3: pride that Mexican people have. They come with the big hats,
- 22:59Speaker 3: belt buckles and ice shirts, the jeans, the wife and
- 23:02Speaker 3: the girlfriend, the side chick, whoever is dressed up, smelling nice,
- 23:06Speaker 3: There's something that you've got to be there to see it.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I can't necessarily explain it to you. You've got to
- 23:11Speaker 3: see it. And when you see the ring, it's like, oh,
- 23:14Speaker 3: they have 80% of the tickets. They're the one that's–
- 23:18Speaker 3: it's the reason why Tecate was a beer sponsor all
- 23:20Speaker 3: these years.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Yep, that's right.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 23:24Speaker 3: It used to be Budweiser, but Tecate took over 20
- 23:27Speaker 3: years ago, 25 years ago.
- 23:28Speaker 2: So it's the reason why these things happen.
- 23:30Speaker 3: It's the reason why in the U.K., you've got a
- 23:34Speaker 3: lot of stuff that goes on over there because they
- 23:37Speaker 3: do things differently.
- 23:38Speaker 2: But grace still carries the sport. It carries the sport.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Without grace, I mean, it's the reason why you put
- 23:44Speaker 3: a Puerto Rican versus a Puerto Rican guy in New York,
- 23:47Speaker 3: he's going to sell out. Berlanga is not a good boxer.
- 23:50Speaker 3: He's another C, not a plus, a C boxer. Sells
- 23:54Speaker 3: out in Madison Square Garden. Sells out because he's Puerto Rican.
- 23:56Speaker 3: White race matters. Like race is caring, which is fine.
- 23:59Speaker 3: And I don't have a problem with that. But we
- 24:00Speaker 3: just gotta be honest about things.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:03Speaker 4: That's the other thing. The main thing that by this
- 24:05Speaker 4: show is the mixed company podcast is that we don't
- 24:07Speaker 4: shy away from these conversations because we're not even saying
- 24:10Speaker 4: that it's like a good or bad thing.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It's just, you know, it's what it is.
- 24:13Speaker 4: It's what it is.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 4: It's realistic. And, you know, we'll obviously we'll say it's
- 24:17Speaker 4: a bad thing when there are racists who hate black
- 24:19Speaker 4: heavyweight fighters, which is always going to thing that part.
- 24:21Speaker 4: We're going to call that out.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Like I, I personally don't like, When people say, oh,
- 24:26Speaker 3: that fighter's too flashy or that fighter doesn't know how
- 24:29Speaker 3: to box.
- 24:31Speaker 2: He's just.
- 24:31Speaker 3: There's words that people will use, right? So they'll say
- 24:34Speaker 3: a Mexican boxer doesn't know how to defend himself.
- 24:37Speaker 2: He's just a brawler.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Like, no, that's not the case. That's not all Mexican fighters.
- 24:41Speaker 3: That's definitely not the case. But those are innuendos that
- 24:45Speaker 3: people will try to throw out there to kind of
- 24:47Speaker 3: steer with how to box them. So you got to
- 24:48Speaker 3: be careful with shit like that. For the most part,
- 24:51Speaker 3: if you know boxing... It is.
- 24:53Speaker 2: What it is. It's the game.
- 24:54Speaker 3: It's just strictly the game. And here's the thing. If
- 24:58Speaker 3: you're one of the boxing fans, we all understand it. Like,
- 25:01Speaker 3: no one's tripping over, like, the little stuff. Like, we
- 25:03Speaker 3: get why fights are made. We get why Floyd fought
- 25:07Speaker 3: a Hispanic fighter for, like, 10 years straight on single-to-mile.
- 25:11Speaker 2: We understand. We're not dumb. We're not dumb. Yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Arrogant is another term I've heard.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:19Speaker 4: For black fighters we know what you mean we know
- 25:25Speaker 4: what you yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah exactly exactly.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Yeah that's that's the word that'll slide under the radar
- 25:30Speaker 4: for a lot of people but um yeah no i
- 25:32Speaker 4: i love that we can have these conversations you know
- 25:34Speaker 4: uh about the sport it's uh you know we always
- 25:36Speaker 4: try to keep it a little different not too cliche
- 25:38Speaker 4: on on you know how we approach things but yeah
- 25:41Speaker 4: uh there's so much moses itama you know like i
- 25:43Speaker 4: said Talented guy, a lot of hype, but there's all
- 25:46Speaker 4: these underlying, you know, things with, you know, which race
- 25:48Speaker 4: claims him, where, you know, he's from, and who he's
- 25:51Speaker 4: going to appeal to, et cetera, et cetera. So I
- 25:54Speaker 4: really have to just, like, make a point to sit down,
- 25:56Speaker 4: put it on my calendar, and watch this guy fight.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Because if he's going to be a big name, you
- 25:59Speaker 4: want to keep an eye on him.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:02Speaker 4: So another thing just interesting that I saw, fights in L.A.
- 26:05Speaker 4: through a platform called ProBoxTV. I had not heard of this,
- 26:09Speaker 4: this Saturday night. names that I don't recognize either, but
- 26:13Speaker 4: there's a shit ton of names on the card. There's
- 26:15Speaker 4: like 10 fights that they've got showing there. I don't
- 26:19Speaker 4: know much about pro box TV. They got a little
- 26:21Speaker 4: membership for five bucks to start. But you know, for me,
- 26:25Speaker 4: more fights is always good. Even if I don't know
- 26:27Speaker 4: any of these names, as long as they're really talented fighters,
- 26:30Speaker 4: really active, I'll sit down and I'll check that shit out.
- 26:33Speaker 4: So I think it'd be cool if I can catch
- 26:35Speaker 4: a most of the time during the day, if it's
- 26:37Speaker 4: in the UK and then at night watch LA fights.
- 26:40Speaker 4: So I'm very excited about that. And then, can you
- 26:43Speaker 4: believe it? The next TNT event is already next week
- 26:46Speaker 4: on September 4th, where Andy Ruiz comes back.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Times wise, bro. I know.
- 26:50Speaker 4: It just felt like we were talking about the Mount
- 26:52Speaker 4: Roach fight just like, I don't know, like last week
- 26:55Speaker 4: or something. So that's wild. This one, interestingly enough, the
- 26:59Speaker 4: Andy Ruiz fight through TNT is on a Friday. We
- 27:00Speaker 4: were just talking about how Saturday is kind of the
- 27:04Speaker 4: big night for boxing. So very interesting. Same thing. I'm
- 27:09Speaker 4: very excited that it's going to be on a regular-ass TV.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 27:12Speaker 4: So I'm going to be out Friday night, find a
- 27:14Speaker 4: place to grab some drinks and watch Andy Ruiz fight.
- 27:17Speaker 4: So always want to take an opportunity. Shout out to
- 27:20Speaker 4: TNT Fights once a month. They're putting on an event.
- 27:23Speaker 4: So Friday, September 4th, we'll be talking about it more.
- 27:26Speaker 4: But I always want to put that out there so
- 27:28Speaker 4: people can watch, support boxing on regular TV.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Great.
- 27:33Speaker 4: So that's all we got for you all today. Jameson,
- 27:34Speaker 4: where can people find you on social media?
- 27:36Speaker 3: On Twitter at TheJamesonMan. Always on there, you know, trying
- 27:40Speaker 3: to decipher all these news coming out. We get We
- 27:42Speaker 3: get future fight news all the time. So I think
- 27:45Speaker 3: Boots is coming up later this year. Got a lot
- 27:47Speaker 3: of fights coming up, so it's going to be really cool.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just been– I'm like a broken record, but
- 27:52Speaker 4: it's just been such a great year for the amount
- 27:54Speaker 4: of fights that keep being plugged in. Even for the
- 27:57Speaker 4: rest of this year, there might be more to come.
- 27:58Speaker 4: So I'm stoked. You can follow our show on Instagram,
