- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, Ron Verb on News Radio 570 WKBN.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Well, welcome one and all. How about those guardians? Let
- 0:10Speaker 2: me just start today by saying that, man. What a game.
- 0:14Speaker 2: What a game. What a game. And who isn't looking
- 0:17Speaker 2: forward to Saturday? I mean, it's just exciting. Anyway, good afternoon.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Perfect day weather-wise, 73 degrees. Welcome to Friday, October 9th.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We're going to start the program out with a discussion.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And see, here's the difference. This is not going to
- 0:30Speaker 2: be a debate. This is going to be a discussion
- 0:33Speaker 2: so that we can learn what one man is thinking,
- 0:35Speaker 2: what the other man is thinking. And we can all
- 0:39Speaker 2: learn from that. I got on my one line, Mahoning
- 0:42Speaker 2: County Commissioner Gino DeFabio. Hi, Gino.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Good afternoon, sir.
- 0:46Speaker 2: How are you doing?
- 0:47Speaker 4: Good.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I appreciate you making the time for us as always. Absolutely.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And as I say, we're going to have a discussion,
- 0:55Speaker 2: not so much of a debate. And let's see, Rich,
- 0:59Speaker 2: a pharmacist is on my other line that has some
- 1:03Speaker 2: disagreements over the new government center and where it's going
- 1:07Speaker 2: to be. Rich, good afternoon to you.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Good afternoon, gentlemen. How are you?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Hey, Rich.
- 1:12Speaker 3: How are you?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Let me start, and I want to start with Gino
- 1:15Speaker 2: to just talk. And, Rich, sit tight and explain to
- 1:20Speaker 2: people about this process and why you decided to choose
- 1:25Speaker 2: the Eastgate and why you did what you did. And
- 1:28Speaker 2: then we'll sit back and listen.
- 1:30Speaker 6: Well, we'll go back about five years, Ron, if you'll remember.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yes, I do.
- 1:34Speaker 6: My first campaign. It was actually spurred on because I
- 1:39Speaker 6: don't use the services down there except maybe get a
- 1:41Speaker 6: title once or twice. But Ralph Meacham put out a
- 1:44Speaker 6: complete report and told us how Oak Hill was bleeding
- 1:48Speaker 6: Mahoney County Drive. I think it's still on his website.
- 1:53Speaker 6: The $ 20 or $ 30 million we put into that building
- 1:56Speaker 6: over the last so many years, I think they've been
- 1:59Speaker 6: in there about maybe close to 20 years. So I
- 2:03Speaker 6: had the opportunity to go down and visit. Not the
- 2:07Speaker 6: Board of Elections, not the title, not veterans, but I
- 2:10Speaker 6: went just behind the closed doors that you couldn't see.
- 2:14Speaker 6: And what I saw was shocking.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Explain to our listeners.
- 2:19Speaker 6: Well, part of the building was demoed. A lot of
- 2:23Speaker 6: the building has peeling paint. There's still hospital supplies. There's
- 2:27Speaker 6: still calendars. Nothing was ever done with the rest of
- 2:29Speaker 6: the building because, frankly, it's too expensive to try to
- 2:33Speaker 6: turn an old hospital into into productive office space. So
- 2:38Speaker 6: they fixed up what was feasible at the time. And
- 2:42Speaker 6: the rest of it, we've just been paying for. Now,
- 2:45Speaker 6: in that building, there's no way to partition off the
- 2:49Speaker 6: heating and the cooling. So that entire building runs off
- 2:52Speaker 6: of air handlers in the basement. It's not like a
- 2:55Speaker 6: mini split. You can't go in a room and shut
- 2:57Speaker 6: off the heat. So like I said, I don't have
- 3:00Speaker 6: that study in front of me, but Ralph put out
- 3:02Speaker 6: a very comprehensive and complete study of what the bills
- 3:06Speaker 6: were at that time and the cost and how we
- 3:08Speaker 6: have to find another option for Oak Hill.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Just so we get an understanding from you is basically
- 3:14Speaker 2: when you're heating or cooling, you have to heat and
- 3:16Speaker 2: cool the entire facility, correct? Even the parts you're not using.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And the hospital rooms are still basically intact as they
- 3:25Speaker 2: were as far as patient rooms, correct?
- 3:28Speaker 6: Well, yes. And the offices that are being housed now
- 3:31Speaker 6: in the jobs and family services, and the child support,
- 3:35Speaker 6: those are all hospital rooms. And some of them still
- 3:38Speaker 6: have fixtures on the walls. They're the size of hospital rooms.
- 3:43Speaker 6: There's nothing efficient or nothing effective for running business out
- 3:47Speaker 6: of that building. At the time, I understand at the
- 3:50Speaker 6: time when they got it, there was a lot going on,
- 3:53Speaker 6: and they had an opportunity to take that building, and
- 3:56Speaker 6: I guess they got a hell of a price on it.
- 3:58Speaker 6: But 20 years later, or whatever it is now, We
- 4:03Speaker 6: have to move on it because the building itself, the
- 4:07Speaker 6: systems that are in there from the roof to the boilers,
- 4:09Speaker 6: we're replacing.
- 4:10Speaker 3: A boiler now.
- 4:12Speaker 6: I think it's over $ 100, 000 just for one boiler. It's
- 4:16Speaker 6: not going to be any better in five years to
- 4:19Speaker 6: make this move then. So the county, before I started,
- 4:25Speaker 6: came in. They started looking for a new building. And
- 4:31Speaker 6: That's where the Patriot building, they call it the imposition.
- 4:34Speaker 6: The county calls it the Patriot building. The imposition building
- 4:37Speaker 6: came to be. Well, that building, number one, it wasn't right-sized.
- 4:42Speaker 6: It was always a beautiful building, but it couldn't house
- 4:46Speaker 6: two of the departments that they wanted to put in
- 4:48Speaker 6: there wouldn't fit. So they talked about rehabbing it, and
- 4:53Speaker 6: I'm telling you, I've talked to the Port Authority and
- 4:56Speaker 6: everyone else. What the cost would have been out there.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Between the parking lot, the roof, and the air handlers
- 5:03Speaker 6: was almost $ 2 million. And somebody, I guess the best
- 5:07Speaker 6: commissioner ever, went on and said, oh, we could have
- 5:08Speaker 6: spent a million and a half a minute in that building.
- 5:11Speaker 6: That's simply not true. It would have been a lot
- 5:14Speaker 6: more than that. And it wouldn't have solved the problem
- 5:18Speaker 6: of about 300 people that would have been left at
- 5:20Speaker 6: Oak Hill. And we would have had to find another building,
- 5:23Speaker 6: another location to put them, maybe rent or something. Well,
- 5:28Speaker 6: that wasn't... To me, and I asked before they took
- 5:31Speaker 6: the vote to buy that building, Commissioner Trafficante voted no.
- 5:36Speaker 6: But even before they had the vote, I said, could
- 5:39Speaker 6: you please wait? I said, what would it hurt? I said,
- 5:42Speaker 6: I'm elected. I'm the new commissioner. I'm going to be
- 5:45Speaker 6: sitting right there in about three weeks. I said, can
- 5:48Speaker 6: you wait six weeks before we do this so I
- 5:51Speaker 6: can have a say? Because going forward... I'm going to
- 5:54Speaker 6: have to deal with whatever the consequences are buying this
- 5:57Speaker 6: building and then figuring out the rest of the pieces
- 5:59Speaker 6: of the puzzle. And I was told no. Had to
- 6:03Speaker 6: do it today.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Had to do it today.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Had to do it today.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Which I don't believe is 100% true either in finding
- 6:09Speaker 6: out now, whatever.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I didn't believe it then. I don't believe it now.
- 6:14Speaker 6: So they went ahead and bought the building. Subsequent to that,
- 6:20Speaker 6: the Eastern Gateway property... became available. They went out of
- 6:26Speaker 6: business or whatever. The state owned it. The Port Authority
- 6:30Speaker 6: looked at it, and it's a complete city block in
- 6:34Speaker 6: the middle, in pretty much the end of downtown, but
- 6:37Speaker 6: it's downtown. And they bought it. They said, we want
- 6:42Speaker 6: to redevelop it because the parking deck, Rich, you can't
- 6:45Speaker 6: use it. It was condemned in April of 2025. So
- 6:49Speaker 6: we can't say, well, it's already a parking deck there,
- 6:51Speaker 6: and they're going to tear down and build a parking deck.
- 6:52Speaker 3: That's stupid.
- 6:53Speaker 6: But that parking deck is unusable.
- 6:55Speaker 3: It's unsafe. That's why it's closed. What's the demolition cost, Gino?
- 7:00Speaker 3: What's that? What's the demolition cost to wreck Eastern Gateway? Well,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I'll tell you.
- 7:07Speaker 6: If the prices came in, they put out bids for it.
- 7:10Speaker 6: I think 20 people took out a contract or picked
- 7:13Speaker 6: up the bid packet. And I think there was like
- 7:15Speaker 6: five or six that come back. And I think the
- 7:18Speaker 6: estimate was about $ 4. 5 million to tear it down. I believe,
- 7:22Speaker 6: and don't quote me because I don't know, because this
- 7:24Speaker 6: is the Port Authority's... The Port Authority's advertising everything and
- 7:28Speaker 6: letting all the contracts.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But I think.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Well, it's interesting because I was.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Hang on.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Let Gino finish.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Let Gino finish his thought. Go ahead, Gino.
- 7:38Speaker 3: 4.2.
- 7:39Speaker 6: It was over $ 4 million was the contractor's estimate because
- 7:42Speaker 6: that building... And I never heard of anything, and I'll tell.
- 7:45Speaker 3: You a funny story. We were... Mr.
- 7:49Speaker 6: Moransky stood up at a meeting and said, I never
- 7:51Speaker 6: heard we had to get an engineering study to tear
- 7:53Speaker 6: down a building because they had to get an engineering
- 7:55Speaker 6: study because of the way that was built. That was
- 7:57Speaker 6: built in the early 70s as Plaza Place, I believe
- 8:00Speaker 6: they called it. And it was built with post-tension concrete.
- 8:05Speaker 6: So when they start taking that apart, literally, if you
- 8:07Speaker 6: don't do it in a certain way, it explodes.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yes, it literally explodes.
- 8:14Speaker 6: And across the street, the Port Authority owns the City
- 8:17Speaker 6: Center 1 building. They got a lot of glass windows.
- 8:20Speaker 6: But anyways, they had to, you know, it's an intricate
- 8:24Speaker 6: thing tearing it down. You would think like they did
- 8:27Speaker 6: the realty tower. They just kept hitting it until it fell.
- 8:29Speaker 6: You can't do that with this kind of concrete. But
- 8:32Speaker 6: it was built like that because there was supposed to
- 8:34Speaker 6: be a hotel built above that, which.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I didn't know. Can I interject on something real quick?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:41Speaker 3: You just said the Patriot building was going to cost
- 8:43Speaker 3: about $ 1. 5 to $ 2 million just for air handlers, roof,
- 8:47Speaker 3: things like that, correct? Right. $ 4. 5 million or $ 4 million,
- 8:53Speaker 3: whatever this bid comes out to be, just to demolish
- 8:58Speaker 3: the Eastern Gateway building, we're going to blow $ 4 million?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:01Speaker 6: Versus $ 2 million that you could have spent on Patriot.
- 9:05Speaker 6: Here's the thing. The Port Authority bought that building.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Hang on. Let Rich make up.
- 9:11Speaker 4: $ 3.
- 9:11Speaker 3: 3 million.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Okay.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You're still a million dollars over what you would have
- 9:15Speaker 3: had in renovations on the Patriot building. If we were
- 9:20Speaker 3: going to build this new building, Gino, for $ 10 million,
- 9:24Speaker 3: I could see where you're going, but we're spending $ 60
- 9:27Speaker 3: million on this new building. The math that you're giving
- 9:32Speaker 3: just in the long term doesn't add up. I mean,
- 9:34Speaker 3: just like I was, one of the other listeners that
- 9:38Speaker 3: I'm friends with sent me the estimates that he ran
- 9:41Speaker 3: the budget on that $ 60 million through AI, assuming the
- 9:45Speaker 3: county has a good bond rate. So we're assuming like
- 9:48Speaker 3: a 4% to 5% interest rate. Depending upon whether you
- 9:52Speaker 3: do a 20-year or 30-year term, you're looking at a
- 9:55Speaker 3: low of $ 88 million all in after interest 2%. take
- 10:00Speaker 3: a $ 60 million build at 20 years, 4% to 5%,
- 10:00Speaker 3: your ballpark, $ 88 million. At 30 years, you're almost $ 120 million.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Borrowing 60. Your interest a year is going to be
- 10:17Speaker 6: borrowing 60, right? You're going, your figure's off of borrowing 60, right?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, Gino.
- 10:22Speaker 6: We're not borrowing $ 60 million, Rich.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Do you know how much?
- 10:27Speaker 6: It's not $ 60 million. How much is it? I think
- 10:32Speaker 6: it's more closer to, I think, 40, maybe 45. All right,
- 10:37Speaker 6: so we cut a third off.
- 10:38Speaker 3: We take... a third off of that. It's still a
- 10:40Speaker 3: lot of, I mean, instead of $ 88 million, a third
- 10:43Speaker 3: of that, you're probably around $ 60 million on a $ 40
- 10:45Speaker 3: million build. Okay.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Do you think we're doing the financing and everything on
- 10:50Speaker 6: a whim? Do you think we just said, well, here,
- 10:51Speaker 6: we'll just borrow the money?
- 10:52Speaker 3: No, I'm sure. I don't think there's been a lot
- 10:56Speaker 3: of you do it on a whim, number one. Ralph
- 10:58Speaker 3: is smart enough not to let you just wing it.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Well, all right. But let's just.
- 11:03Speaker 6: We've done a lot of due diligence on the financing
- 11:06Speaker 6: and The county has a financial advisor and a company
- 11:11Speaker 6: that actually manages a lot of that stuff.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Let me just interject for just one second before we
- 11:20Speaker 2: get into it. We can tear all of this apart
- 11:22Speaker 2: piece by piece. But I want Gino to finish his
- 11:25Speaker 2: thought process on, okay, he toured the Southside Hospital and
- 11:31Speaker 2: a disaster. He was explaining why... they wanted to make
- 11:35Speaker 2: a move to some other building. And you said Eastern
- 11:38Speaker 2: Gateway became available. I want you to pick up the
- 11:41Speaker 2: story from that point in time as to what your
- 11:45Speaker 2: thoughts were when you toured Eastern Gateway or why you
- 11:48Speaker 2: selected that site.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Well, before we selected Eastern Gateway, there was a process
- 11:55Speaker 6: to doing that. There was also an assessment done of
- 11:59Speaker 6: all the departments under the commissioners, under the county, the
- 12:03Speaker 6: space they needed, what we would need. for them to
- 12:05Speaker 6: function and provide for the residents. How much space they
- 12:11Speaker 6: needed actually and where they were at now. And everything
- 12:15Speaker 6: pointed to we will save money in the long term.
- 12:19Speaker 6: We will have a place for at least 50, 60
- 12:21Speaker 6: years that we won't have to have all the issues
- 12:25Speaker 6: with having departments scattered throughout the county. And like I said,
- 12:32Speaker 6: this hasn't been done on a whim. And, Rich, I
- 12:35Speaker 6: told you that there's been a lot of due diligence
- 12:38Speaker 6: with this. And honest to God, Ron, I didn't call
- 12:40Speaker 6: to argue with anybody today.
- 12:42Speaker 2: No, we're not going to argue. We're just going to
- 12:43Speaker 2: try to– we're just trying to listen.
- 12:46Speaker 6: These are the facts.
- 12:47Speaker 3: These are the facts of how this happened. But there's
- 12:50Speaker 3: something happening. Where can I look at the due diligence
- 12:53Speaker 3: that was done? Are there reports? Are there archives? There
- 12:57Speaker 3: should be a record of this somewhere that I can
- 12:59Speaker 3: peruse through.
- 13:00Speaker 6: Rich, everything we have done has been in public. Every
- 13:04Speaker 6: decision we've made, every dollar that we've already put into
- 13:07Speaker 6: this has been on the agenda.
- 13:09Speaker 3: The decisions are made in public, but where are the
- 13:12Speaker 3: studies that you did as far as moving that show
- 13:14Speaker 3: the cost or the benefit?
- 13:15Speaker 6: We have those. We have those.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So I can do a public records request and get
- 13:22Speaker 3: those to read, then?
- 13:24Speaker 6: They came in packets, I'm sure. I'm sure you could
- 13:27Speaker 6: ask for the facility studies and whatever else. I don't
- 13:30Speaker 6: know why you wouldn't be able to see those. I'm
- 13:32Speaker 6: not ashamed of them.
- 13:33Speaker 2: All right, so basically, go ahead, Rich.
- 13:37Speaker 6: The big one, you can go to the auditor's website,
- 13:40Speaker 6: and it's probably six years old. You could probably add
- 13:42Speaker 6: $ 10 million to that.
- 13:45Speaker 3: The first question I have is, number one, why does
- 13:48Speaker 3: it have to stay in the city? I would like
- 13:50Speaker 3: somebody to explain to me why all these have to
- 13:53Speaker 3: stay in the city itself.
- 13:55Speaker 6: I'm not interested in reinventing the wheel. If you look
- 13:59Speaker 6: at Columbus, Franklin County, everything is in downtown Columbus. And
- 14:05Speaker 6: I think the reason is because if somebody has to
- 14:07Speaker 6: come for services to a county government, they don't have
- 14:10Speaker 6: to go to 17 different locations. It's the way things
- 14:13Speaker 6: are done all over the state, likely all over the country.
- 14:17Speaker 6: Likely all over the country.
- 14:18Speaker 3: In Columbus, I get it. Columbus is the center of
- 14:21Speaker 3: Franklin County. So it makes sense to have it in
- 14:24Speaker 3: downtown Columbus. I get that. The city of Youngstown, geographically,
- 14:29Speaker 3: is about as far away from a good chunk of
- 14:31Speaker 3: your population, Mahoning County, as it can possibly be and
- 14:34Speaker 3: still be in Mahoning County. You're way closer to Liberty, Hubbard,
- 14:39Speaker 3: than Langdon is. Well, what I'm saying is if you look...
- 14:44Speaker 3: When Mahoney County was formed, Gino, do you know what
- 14:47Speaker 3: the original county seat was? It was Canfield. Yeah, Canfield.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Because Canfield was in the center of the county. And
- 14:52Speaker 3: the records were stolen from the population center.
- 14:55Speaker 2: No, wait. One at a time.
- 14:55Speaker 6: The records were stolen, actually, from Canfield and brought to Youngstown.
- 14:59Speaker 3: That's what I understood.
- 15:00Speaker 6: The records were stolen from somewhere, a courthouse in Canfield,
- 15:03Speaker 6: and brought to Youngstown. So that's why Youngstown.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Became the county seat. For whatever reason, 150 years ago
- 15:10Speaker 3: or whatever it was, they decided to make Youngstown the
- 15:12Speaker 3: county seat. Now, I get that that's why Youngstown basically
- 15:15Speaker 3: controlled everything in the county, but it doesn't anymore. It's
- 15:18Speaker 3: a shell of what it was earlier. When I was
- 15:21Speaker 3: growing up, Youngstown was a big city. It's a shell.
- 15:24Speaker 3: It's not much bigger than Boardman and Austintown are right now,
- 15:27Speaker 3: population-wise and economically. But there again, we're not doing this
- 15:31Speaker 3: to reinvent the wheel. the county, the city of Youngstown
- 15:37Speaker 3: is the county seat, and we want to keep the
- 15:39Speaker 3: county offices close to the county seat in the downtown area.
- 15:43Speaker 5: That was the decision.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Like I said, you could argue it, but that was
- 15:46Speaker 6: our decision to do that. And I don't know what
- 15:50Speaker 6: else to tell you. You know, I mean, you could.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Disagree with it. Here's the problem I have with that.
- 15:54Speaker 3: To take a page out of Mayor McKelvey's book, you
- 15:58Speaker 3: should be viewing me and the rest of the citizens
- 16:00Speaker 3: of Mahoning County as your customers. So you're saying because
- 16:04Speaker 3: this is the way we've always done it, but you're
- 16:06Speaker 3: saying because this is the way we've always done it,
- 16:09Speaker 3: we're going to continue to keep it in Youngstown, even
- 16:11Speaker 3: though geographically and physically that is as far away from
- 16:15Speaker 3: most of your customers that don't live in the city
- 16:17Speaker 3: of Youngstown as you can possibly get and still be
- 16:20Speaker 3: in the city of Youngstown. It makes no sense. I
- 16:23Speaker 3: understand you want to stay there because it's the county seat,
- 16:26Speaker 3: but in today's world with all the technology we have
- 16:30Speaker 3: and team meetings and all the things you can do online,
- 16:32Speaker 3: there's no reason to physically and geographically give everything to
- 16:36Speaker 3: the city of Youngstown.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Let me follow up on that.
- 16:39Speaker 3: As a rural resident, I find it annoying that I
- 16:42Speaker 3: have to drive all the way into the city of
- 16:43Speaker 3: Youngstown every time I want to do anything.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Stand by, guys.
- 16:46Speaker 3: It should be a lot more convenient for your customers.
- 16:49Speaker 2: All right, stand by. Hang on. It's a discussion that
- 16:52Speaker 2: we're having today, and it's an interesting one with Gino DiFabio, commissioner,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and Rich, the pharmacist.
- 16:56Speaker 6: Back in a minute.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Hi, this is Ron Verb.
- 17:01Speaker 8: WKBN.
- 17:02Speaker 2: All right, and so we're going to have a respectful
- 17:04Speaker 2: discussion and not interrupt each other when one person is talking.
- 17:08Speaker 2: So let me rephrase the question because we're here to
- 17:13Speaker 2: get an understanding. From a perspective of just a citizen
- 17:17Speaker 2: or a customer, as George McKelvey would say, it can
- 17:20Speaker 2: be very inconvenient for older people, and we are an
- 17:23Speaker 2: older community, or people in general to go to downtown
- 17:26Speaker 2: Youngstown to park, to walk, to get into the facility.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Was there any consideration given to that as opposed to
- 17:33Speaker 2: going somewhere else where it's a lot easier to do that, Gino?
- 17:37Speaker 6: Ron, we looked at a lot of places. I don't
- 17:41Speaker 6: know what place would be, I mean, easy. We're talking
- 17:44Speaker 6: about a parking deck that's going to bring you down
- 17:47Speaker 6: to the first floor, a short walk into the building,
- 17:51Speaker 6: and that'll be, you know, I mean, it's not like
- 17:54Speaker 6: the hospital.
- 17:55Speaker 3: What places outside of the city did you look at, Gino?
- 17:59Speaker 3: What places outside of the city of Youngstown, or was
- 18:02Speaker 3: that just never considered?
- 18:04Speaker 6: No, it wasn't that it was never considered, but our
- 18:08Speaker 6: focus was... Where do you look outside of Youngstown? Well,
- 18:11Speaker 6: they bought the Patriot building, but that wasn't going to work. Rich,
- 18:15Speaker 6: we needed a building to house about 350 people with
- 18:20Speaker 6: parking for over 300 cars. It was easily accessible. There's
- 18:26Speaker 6: not a lot. There's not a lot.
- 18:28Speaker 7: We had offers.
- 18:29Speaker 6: We had offers. I'm not even going to talk about
- 18:32Speaker 6: that offer. But I heard you suggested the other day
- 18:35Speaker 6: we should have bought the mall. We could have got
- 18:37Speaker 6: it cheap, but we had that whole thing. That mall
- 18:39Speaker 6: was built in 1970. I don't want to care for
- 18:42Speaker 6: that mall that's already 50, 60 years old or whatever
- 18:46Speaker 6: it is. I don't want to put a.
- 18:47Speaker 7: Roof on it.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Well, I was discussing that with Jason... I was discussing
- 18:51Speaker 3: with Jason Lurie, who is Boardman's township administrator now that
- 18:54Speaker 3: he's retired, is intimately familiar with that property. He said
- 18:59Speaker 3: all the HVAC systems were replaced, and the roof is
- 19:01Speaker 3: brand new. The only thing that really needs updated there is,
- 19:05Speaker 3: like you said yesterday, is the parking lot. But that
- 19:08Speaker 3: building sold in December of 2024. The new one made
- 19:11Speaker 3: $ 24. 1 million. The Vindicator said $ 24. 1 million. I looked it
- 19:18Speaker 3: up this morning.
- 19:19Speaker 6: I thought that's what he was asking for.
- 19:20Speaker 3: So versus $ 60 million, you would still be saving, even if,
- 19:24Speaker 3: let's say you put $ 6 million into a new parking lot,
- 19:27Speaker 3: you get it for $ 30 million. That's half, half of
- 19:30Speaker 3: the $ 60 million.
- 19:31Speaker 5: And then you have dollars.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Go ahead, Gino. Don't let Gino talk. Let Gino respond
- 19:37Speaker 2: to your comments.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Then you have a huge building. Do you know what
- 19:43Speaker 6: the cost of remodeling the inside of the building would be?
- 19:46Speaker 6: Patriot was like $ 2 million, 45,000 square feet, one building.
- 19:50Speaker 6: was about $ 2 million to build it out. Could you
- 19:52Speaker 6: imagine what trying to build out the mall would cost? See, Rich,
- 19:55Speaker 6: honest to God, I appreciate you. I appreciate the work
- 19:59Speaker 6: you put in. But unless you... Everybody's the same way. Ron,
- 20:04Speaker 6: one second. I got to tell you, I heard my friend,
- 20:07Speaker 6: my very good friend, the boss lady the other day,
- 20:10Speaker 6: talking about the house they redid on Philadelphia and how
- 20:12Speaker 6: rotten and how horrible it was.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 6: If you don't have a clue of where the money
- 20:19Speaker 6: comes from, why people get it, it sounds horrible. I
- 20:23Speaker 6: would say tear it down if I didn't know, if
- 20:26Speaker 6: I didn't know. And I tried to help her a
- 20:29Speaker 6: lot last night, and I think I did. There's so
- 20:32Speaker 6: many things that people don't know everything about it. They
- 20:36Speaker 6: see one thing, and they zero in on that.
- 20:40Speaker 2: No, let Geno finish talking.
- 20:41Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 20:42Speaker 2: No, I want Geno to finish his thought before. I
- 20:45Speaker 2: don't want interruptions. Go ahead, Geno.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Ron, there's so much in government, and there's so much
- 20:50Speaker 6: to be considered, because I can get mad at something,
- 20:54Speaker 6: but in the grand scheme of things, I might just
- 20:56Speaker 6: be pissed off for another reason, and I'm going to
- 20:58Speaker 6: harp on that and get mad on that and be
- 21:00Speaker 6: mad about that. Well, I might not know what I'm
- 21:03Speaker 6: talking about. And if the truth be told at the
- 21:06Speaker 6: end of the day, a truthful man or woman would say,
- 21:09Speaker 6: you know what, you're right. That was wrong.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I shouldn't have said that. You know, that doesn't make
- 21:13Speaker 3: any sense.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Well, I did say that.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Buy the Southern Park Mall and remodel the inside of
- 21:19Speaker 6: the mall for county offices in the size of the
- 21:22Speaker 6: mall and everything out there. Doesn't make any sense. If
- 21:26Speaker 6: Rich thinks about it, I think.
- 21:27Speaker 3: He would agree. I would disagree. I vehemently disagree because,
- 21:31Speaker 3: number one, most of it doesn't need remodeled, number one.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Number two, you would still have tenants paying you rent
- 21:37Speaker 3: every month to.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Help subsidize that. I don't believe the county could rent
- 21:40Speaker 6: out to private things like that. But you could check
- 21:44Speaker 6: into that. But I don't believe we could be a
- 21:45Speaker 6: landlord for anything other than county office.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Or we could text Fisher to modify the legislation so
- 21:50Speaker 3: you could. Yes. Like they fixed the library problem. He's
- 21:54Speaker 3: a pretty effective legislator.
- 21:57Speaker 2: All right. Stand by, guys. Stand by. Just stand by.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I've got to pause here. Stand by with Rich, the pharmacist,
- 22:04Speaker 2: and Gino, the county commissioner, when we come back after this.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So stay tuned. News Radio 570 WKVN.
- 22:15Speaker 9: A traveling exhibit displaying millions of Jeffrey Epstein documents is
- 22:18Speaker 9: in Columbus this weekend.
- 22:20Speaker 10: Near Goodall Park at the Sanctuary on Neal, the Donald J.
- 22:23Speaker 10: Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room is allowing visitors
- 22:27Speaker 10: to browse a library full of pages of documents. It
- 22:30Speaker 10: drew dozens of visitors in the first hour opening alone.
- 22:34Speaker 10: A section of the exhibit is titled The Les Wexner Wing,
- 22:38Speaker 10: which zebras in on the relationship between the former CEO
- 22:41Speaker 10: of L Brands and Epstein. The traveling exhibit is open
- 22:44Speaker 10: through Sunday.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I'm Lee Mowan.
- 22:47Speaker 9: The Beach Boys will take the stage tomorrow night at

- 22:53Speaker 9: back to the 1960s, includes hits like Good Vibrations, Surfin' USA,
- 22:58Speaker 9: and Kokomo. Full House star and lifelong Beach Boys fan
- 23:01Speaker 9: John Stamos will be performing with the group. Doors open

- 23:16Speaker 8: A to Z dependable services. Plumbing, septic, heating, cooling, and
- 23:21Speaker 8: one-day baths.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Highways.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Now, Ron Verb. On News Radio 570, WKBN.
- 23:28Speaker 2: All right, so with Commissioner Geno and Rich, the pharmacist,
- 23:33Speaker 2: before I go back to all of this, just to
- 23:35Speaker 2: get an understanding, and I think we are getting an understanding, folks.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That's the point of a discussion, and I'm learning things
- 23:42Speaker 2: as well as the rest of you. So I actually
- 23:46Speaker 2: understand the argument that you're making, Geno, to say Youngstown,
- 23:49Speaker 2: whether we like it or not or agree or not,
- 23:51Speaker 2: is a county seat, and that's why you want it.
- 23:53Speaker 2: The county wants the offices to be gathered in the
- 23:55Speaker 2: county seat.
- 23:57Speaker 7: On stock shelf.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Right, and just like they are in other areas. I actually, okay,
- 24:03Speaker 2: I understand that. And you're saying, and correct me if
- 24:08Speaker 2: I'm wrong in anything, you're saying to what Rich is
- 24:10Speaker 2: saying about, well, why didn't we buy the mall and
- 24:13Speaker 2: move into the mall? First of all, I don't know
- 24:15Speaker 2: if the guy wants to sell the mall. I'll just
- 24:17Speaker 2: start with that. But secondly, your answer would be, I
- 24:22Speaker 2: don't want to buy another old building that I'm going
- 24:24Speaker 2: to have to throw a bunch of money into the
- 24:25Speaker 2: facility that's loaded with asbestos and what have you and
- 24:30Speaker 2: remodel it inside to make it for government offices and
- 24:34Speaker 2: each of them to have their own heating and cooling
- 24:36Speaker 2: thermostats and what have you. And it's too big for
- 24:41Speaker 2: what our needs are. Is that fairly accurate? I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 24:44Speaker 6: That is accurate. And as far as taking an older
- 24:47Speaker 6: building and rehabbing it and stuff, I mean, with everything else,
- 24:50Speaker 6: with the mechanicals. There's also, it has to be ADA compliant.
- 24:55Speaker 6: You talked about older people coming down to the county.
- 24:59Speaker 6: It has to be ADA compliant. The new building is
- 25:02Speaker 6: going to have all of that. I talk to the
- 25:04Speaker 6: architects because I talk to them a lot because a
- 25:07Speaker 6: lot of this is on me because I'm the one
- 25:08Speaker 6: out speaking about it, and I want to make sure
- 25:10Speaker 6: that people understand everything. I forget the exact number of
- 25:14Speaker 6: feet of cable and wiring that are going to go
- 25:17Speaker 6: into that building. With all the new technology, it's literally
- 25:22Speaker 6: miles and miles of wiring. Now, you've got to do
- 25:26Speaker 6: that in an old building, I would say, is a
- 25:29Speaker 6: lot more expensive and a lot more costly and probably
- 25:33Speaker 6: unsightly to do that, trying to retrofit an old building
- 25:36Speaker 6: with the new technology we're going to need in 10 years,
- 25:38Speaker 6: 20 years.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Okay, let me just.
- 25:40Speaker 6: We're going to have that.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Let me ask you.
- 25:41Speaker 5: We're going to have.
- 25:42Speaker 2: All right, let me ask you a question. If I
- 25:45Speaker 2: go back to the Southside Hospital.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Is there a possibility or discussion saying, okay, we could
- 25:53Speaker 2: take $ 20 million or $ 10 million or whatever the cost
- 25:56Speaker 2: might be to make improvements to Southside Hospital so that
- 26:01Speaker 2: we could stay in that facility? In other words, we
- 26:04Speaker 2: bought it for next to nothing and we put money
- 26:06Speaker 2: in it over the years. If we put $ 10 million
- 26:10Speaker 2: in it or $ 15 million in it, not $ 60 million,
- 26:12Speaker 2: could we make that building a better facility where we
- 26:15Speaker 2: could stay in that facility?
- 26:17Speaker 4: No.
- 26:18Speaker 6: I will take you, because now I have access to
- 26:20Speaker 6: every floor of that building. Ron, I'll take you down there,
- 26:22Speaker 6: and I'll show you what nobody sees down there. And
- 26:26Speaker 6: you tell me how much money would you want to
- 26:29Speaker 6: put into that building? The building is 100 and some
- 26:32Speaker 6: years old. It was pieced together. We're going to try
- 26:36Speaker 6: to repurpose it in some way. I think the state
- 26:40Speaker 6: just come out with new regulations or rules on their
- 26:43Speaker 6: Brownfield grants. where municipalities and counties can now apply for
- 26:47Speaker 6: them for for uh... taking down all government buildings there.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I think i don't know what we look at what
- 26:54Speaker 3: they're all going to be good because Trumbull ended up
- 26:57Speaker 3: wrecking the old St. Joe's.
- 26:59Speaker 6: There's money out there to wreck it. I think that
- 27:01Speaker 6: was federal money. I think that was.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Okay, but I just want to finish my thoughts. I'll
- 27:06Speaker 2: get right back to you. So basically, it would be
- 27:09Speaker 2: throwing good money after bad to do anything in Southside. Now,
- 27:12Speaker 2: I have heard on a personal level to both of
- 27:15Speaker 2: you from somebody in the know, people in the know,
- 27:18Speaker 2: that inside these walls, these concrete walls, there's cast iron
- 27:23Speaker 2: plumbing everywhere. And to be blunt, it's just a bitch
- 27:25Speaker 2: to deal with the leaks and to get to the
- 27:27Speaker 2: pipes and find the leaks. Is that accurate, Gina?
- 27:30Speaker 6: It's also true because it is an older building. If
- 27:33Speaker 6: there's a leak and that pipe is wrapped, there's no
- 27:37Speaker 6: free-floating asbestos in the building. But if they have to
- 27:39Speaker 6: open a wall, the cost just to have it protected
- 27:43Speaker 6: before they can work on the pipe is astronomical. And
- 27:47Speaker 6: you're not going to tear every.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Wall out in.
- 27:50Speaker 6: and mitigate anything that might be in those walls. It
- 27:53Speaker 6: just doesn't make sense.
- 27:56Speaker 3: All right.
- 27:56Speaker 2: So I just want to get the thought process because
- 27:59Speaker 2: it's important to understand why Southside Hospital should go. And basically,
- 28:03Speaker 2: you're heating and cooling a lot of the building, which
- 28:05Speaker 2: you don't need and you don't use. You have no choice,
- 28:08Speaker 2: but you have to do it. and there's a lot
- 28:11Speaker 2: of deterioration. So fixing it up isn't an option. So
- 28:14Speaker 2: then you go to segment two, which is, okay, we're
- 28:18Speaker 2: going to find another place. Obviously, I would agree with you,
- 28:22Speaker 2: the Patriot building would be for some government offices, but
- 28:25Speaker 2: not all government offices, to say the least. It's not
- 28:28Speaker 2: that big.
- 28:30Speaker 6: You couldn't have put JFS in there and the Board
- 28:33Speaker 6: of Elections. You couldn't have put child support, JFS, and
- 28:36Speaker 6: something else in there. It just didn't fit.
- 28:38Speaker 3: It was.
- 28:39Speaker 6: It's a beautiful building. I believe that they're using it
- 28:44Speaker 6: now as Summit Academy, I believe.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Right, it's a relatively new building. And it needs a roof. Right,
- 28:52Speaker 2: but that is, but I'm just, I guess it's an
- 28:55Speaker 2: irrelevant point because it doesn't exist. But, I mean, anything
- 28:58Speaker 2: that you own is going to need some routine maintenance.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I mean, you know, the building you're building is going
- 29:03Speaker 2: to need a roof. The Patriot building, to replace the roof,
- 29:07Speaker 2: Or to replace the air conditioning. Well, those units would
- 29:10Speaker 2: last as long as they would in a new building
- 29:12Speaker 2: because you're putting in new equipment. So these are not
- 29:16Speaker 2: these are it's not a dilapidated building. It's some minor repairs,
- 29:20Speaker 2: but it doesn't matter. It didn't fit the needs and
- 29:22Speaker 2: it wasn't wasn't the right building.
- 29:24Speaker 6: It wasn't a this or that because it didn't match up.
- 29:28Speaker 6: It wasn't a this or that as far as a
- 29:30Speaker 6: new building or Patriot.
- 29:31Speaker 2: All right. Now, yes. So when you're looking downtown, you
- 29:36Speaker 2: guys decide that the Eastern District, is the right fit
- 29:42Speaker 2: to the port authorities telling you, this is what, this
- 29:44Speaker 2: is what to do, rip down the parking garage and
- 29:47Speaker 2: you're going to rip down Eastern gateway and build a
- 29:49Speaker 2: new building. Correct.
- 29:52Speaker 7: Right.
- 29:52Speaker 6: Well, here, here's the thing also that that is, I
- 29:56Speaker 6: think it's almost two acre site.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:00Speaker 6: In the city across the street from and i've said
- 30:03Speaker 6: it a hundred times from lake the river eastgate uh...
- 30:07Speaker 6: the chambers in there all all the economic uh... development
- 30:12Speaker 6: all the economic drivers of our community i mean over
- 30:15Speaker 6: the poor forty put together the claim kimberly clark deal
- 30:19Speaker 6: anybody who would come to the port authority asking for
- 30:23Speaker 6: help or grants or whatever or lake the river and
- 30:25Speaker 6: later rivers doing a great job they did that they've
- 30:28Speaker 6: got property identified everywhere They have leads. If a company
- 30:31Speaker 6: calls in, they say, I have this property here. You
- 30:34Speaker 6: can build here. Everybody comes to that building. So do
- 30:37Speaker 6: you want out-of-town developers and everybody else coming to Mahoney
- 30:41Speaker 6: County to talk about Mahoney County and look across the street?
- 30:45Speaker 6: And this is just one of the little caveats. They
- 30:49Speaker 6: would see a dilapidated parking deck that's closed because it's condemned.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Now they're going to look across the street, and every
- 30:56Speaker 6: one of those agencies could say, let me take you
- 30:58Speaker 6: over and talk to our county commissioners. Or I'll take
- 31:01Speaker 6: you right over to our building department. Or I'll take
- 31:03Speaker 6: you over to our planning department. They can help you
- 31:05Speaker 6: with that.
- 31:06Speaker 2: And just to interrupt you for just a second, and
- 31:11Speaker 2: get to Rich, I'm not opposed to county offices. That
- 31:13Speaker 2: was the whole goal in Southside initially was to put
- 31:16Speaker 2: everything under one roof. For the convenience of people coming
- 31:19Speaker 2: to do business with the county, they didn't have to
- 31:21Speaker 2: go to a million different places. With that being said,
- 31:25Speaker 2: will parking be free for the citizens of the county?
- 31:29Speaker 2: You say there's going to be a parking garage. I mean,
- 31:31Speaker 2: if senior citizens or a citizen of the county, are
- 31:34Speaker 2: they going to have to pay to get into the
- 31:35Speaker 2: parking garage? Are they going to be able to find,
- 31:37Speaker 2: will there be plenty of parking spaces that aren't taken
- 31:41Speaker 2: by just employees or other people down there? I mean,
- 31:44Speaker 2: what I'm asking you is, is there going to be
- 31:46Speaker 2: convenience for the customers that need to come and go
- 31:49Speaker 2: down there and not paying for this parking?
- 31:53Speaker 6: It'll be convenient. Will it be free? That's still discussed
- 31:57Speaker 6: on how that works out. I found out, Ron, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 6: when you build a parking deck, every space, say you
- 32:03Speaker 6: want to build a 100-space parking deck. It cost about
- 32:07Speaker 6: $ 30, 000 in construction for one space. And what happened was,
- 32:13Speaker 6: if you have a parking deck and you don't charge
- 32:15Speaker 6: anything for it, there's no money to fix it and
- 32:20Speaker 6: upkeep it.
- 32:21Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 32:21Speaker 13: Yes.
- 32:22Speaker 3: That's not good either.
- 32:23Speaker 6: So there may be a nominal charge for parking. That's
- 32:25Speaker 6: still being discussed. That's still up in the air. I'm
- 32:28Speaker 6: not going to lie to you.
- 32:29Speaker 2: No, no, I understand. In other words... Hey, our parking
- 32:32Speaker 2: lot across the.
- 32:33Speaker 6: Street from our building gets $ 7. 00.
- 32:35Speaker 14: Right.
- 32:35Speaker 2: In other words, you'd have to pay, and that would
- 32:38Speaker 2: go into a separate fund to maintain the facility.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Correct.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Okay. So this is why in the $ 60 million price tag,
- 32:49Speaker 2: that counts ripping down the parking deck and ripping down
- 32:53Speaker 2: Eastern Gateway and constructing a new building. That's the total cost.
- 32:57Speaker 3: And a new parking deck.
- 32:58Speaker 2: That's the total.
- 32:59Speaker 3: That's the whole deal.
- 33:00Speaker 15: The whole.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Is $ 60 million for everything.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 33:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:04Speaker 6: And it won't be $ 80 million. There won't be cost overruns.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:09Speaker 6: There won't be.
- 33:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 33:12Speaker 6: There won't be. We're going to go as we go along.
- 33:14Speaker 6: And I think October 28th is a public meeting. There's
- 33:18Speaker 6: going to be a website set up where everything is
- 33:20Speaker 6: going to be explained on a daily basis. And I
- 33:24Speaker 6: said the one thing, and I said it very firmly.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I told the Port Authority and the architect and everybody else,
- 33:29Speaker 6: we're not going to do the downtown what the last
- 33:32Speaker 6: previous administration did to downtown and rip up streets and
- 33:35Speaker 6: not tell anybody where we were going next and have
- 33:38Speaker 6: a mess. There's going to be designated truck routes when
- 33:41Speaker 6: they tear it down and when they come in. They're
- 33:44Speaker 6: going to stage the stuff. We already have staging areas
- 33:47Speaker 6: for the building materials. It's got to be a good
- 33:50Speaker 6: run because a lot of this is on me. So
- 33:54Speaker 6: I don't want to look like an idiot. Right.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Well, I would say a lot of it is on you.
- 33:58Speaker 2: But with that being the thing you're saying, it's going
- 34:00Speaker 2: to be a $ 60 million cost and a brand new
- 34:04Speaker 2: building and parking deck, and it will be regularly maintained. Because,
- 34:10Speaker 2: you know, I don't want to hear, like, I'm kind
- 34:12Speaker 2: of hearing, well, in the Patriot building, we have to
- 34:14Speaker 2: put on a new roof. Well, I can assure you
- 34:16Speaker 2: in 20 years, we're not going to rip down the
- 34:18Speaker 2: new building because we've got to put on a new
- 34:20Speaker 2: roof again. or we've got to put on air conditioning.
- 34:22Speaker 2: These are routine things you've got to do in your home,
- 34:24Speaker 2: let alone a building. Now, my other question is just
- 34:29Speaker 2: one other thing. Any of the county offices that are
- 34:32Speaker 2: not in downtown Youngstown, will they have to consolidate into
- 34:38Speaker 2: this one building so everything will be there, the building departments,
- 34:43Speaker 2: the health departments? Will they be leaving?
- 34:47Speaker 3: No. Go ahead.
- 34:51Speaker 6: That was another misnomer on your program. Somebody said it
- 34:54Speaker 6: a few times. The health department owns their building on Westchester.
- 34:58Speaker 6: They own that building. They won't be moving. But our
- 35:02Speaker 6: planning department and our building department is in that building,
- 35:07Speaker 6: and they likely will be coming to the new building.
- 35:11Speaker 2: So the best of your ability is as much of
- 35:14Speaker 2: the county offices won't be renting anything anywhere. You mentioned
- 35:19Speaker 2: they own that one. And if they do, they will
- 35:22Speaker 2: be coming into the building downtown. Is that accurate?
- 35:26Speaker 6: Well, there's one department I know of that is in
- 35:29Speaker 6: the Westchester building now. One of the Westchester buildings is
- 35:32Speaker 6: our Letta Bateman program.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But we own that building, you said, right?
- 35:37Speaker 6: We don't own that building. The Board of Health owns
- 35:39Speaker 6: the Board of Health building. This is This is in
- 35:41Speaker 6: a little Westchester complex with a senior center and.
- 35:44Speaker 3: All that is.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Those buildings there.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 6: They have that. They built that out, I believe, with
- 35:51Speaker 6: their grant. And their rent is very– it's.
- 35:57Speaker 3: A good deal for them.
- 35:59Speaker 2: So they'll stay there.
- 36:01Speaker 3: They'll likely stay there, yes.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:03Speaker 6: And we don't have– really, Ron, if anybody else– I mean,
- 36:08Speaker 6: I love this stuff. I love seeing the planning, what
- 36:11Speaker 6: goes into it, the moving around of little blocks and
- 36:14Speaker 6: seeing from the, they call it schematic design when they
- 36:18Speaker 6: first start. It's really, you fit everything where you could
- 36:22Speaker 6: fit it. And did you know when they build a
- 36:25Speaker 6: building on half of the square footage is hallways and mechanical? Half,
- 36:31Speaker 6: literally half the size.
- 36:33Speaker 2: That makes sense.
- 36:33Speaker 6: Like the building's going to be approximately, well, I didn't say,
- 36:35Speaker 6: I said there's no way. But if the building is
- 36:39Speaker 6: 80,000 square feet, you need 40,000 square feet for hallways
- 36:42Speaker 6: and mechanicals. Literally half the building.
- 36:45Speaker 2: All right. With that being known, and I go back
- 36:48Speaker 2: to you, Rich, wasn't there a time that you thought, Rich,
- 36:50Speaker 2: they should just bouncing things off of you just to
- 36:54Speaker 2: clear up so many things that have been said? Weren't
- 36:56Speaker 2: you talking, Rich, about the IBM building or something at
- 36:58Speaker 2: one time? Forget the mall.
- 36:59Speaker 3: The IBM building is right across from Eastern Gate, right
- 37:02Speaker 3: down the street from where the Port Authority and all
- 37:06Speaker 3: that is across from Eastern Gate, where it was for sale.
- 37:09Speaker 3: I think I read somebody just bought it.
- 37:11Speaker 16: But it was literally right there, a fairly modern building. Yep,
- 37:15Speaker 16: they're going to put the... Somebody went in there. It
- 37:18Speaker 16: would have probably been a really good place to put
- 37:20Speaker 16: children's services.
- 37:22Speaker 3: I don't know. How many square feet do we need, Gina?
- 37:27Speaker 3: Because I just did a Google search this morning of
- 37:29Speaker 3: commercial property available in downtown Youngstown. And 6 West Federal Street,
- 37:34Speaker 3: which is a building directly across from the Doubletree Hotel,
- 37:38Speaker 3: is for sale for $ 2.
- 37:39Speaker 2: 2 million.
- 37:39Speaker 3: It's got 154,000 square feet. Looks, taking a look on
- 37:46Speaker 3: the website, I can't remember what realty company has it,
- 37:49Speaker 3: but looks to be in really good shape. Plus, it's historic,
- 37:52Speaker 3: so you could probably get a lot of federal credits.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I know that's what they're trying to do with the old,
- 37:56Speaker 3: I believe, Farmore building. They had all those federal credits
- 37:59Speaker 3: lined up, and then nobody wanted to develop it.
- 38:02Speaker 6: We'll talk about that another day. I got some stuff
- 38:04Speaker 6: on that.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Well, you wouldn't believe it. You would not believe it.
- 38:09Speaker 3: This building is $ 2. 2 million. You can get the whole
- 38:12Speaker 3: building for less than the cost of demolition of Eastern Gateway.
- 38:17Speaker 3: And what I find interesting is I was on the
- 38:20Speaker 3: Eastgate development thing. I'm on their Citizens Advisory Committee, and
- 38:28Speaker 3: they have a general policy board meeting. You may have
- 38:30Speaker 3: been there because Anthony Trevina from the Port Authority was
- 38:33Speaker 3: actually addressing some different things, and he talked about Eastern Gateway. Okay.
- 38:37Speaker 3: And he made the statement, and I'm sure it's on
- 38:41Speaker 3: their website, so you can probably go back and watch
- 38:43Speaker 3: the meeting, that he didn't realize how much money Eastern
- 38:47Speaker 3: Gateway was costing the Port Authority until after they bought it.
- 38:51Speaker 3: So call me a skeptic, but I think it's really
- 38:53Speaker 3: ironic that they buy Eastern Gateway, find out it's a
- 38:55Speaker 3: financial boondoggle, and then all of a sudden they want
- 38:58Speaker 3: to dump it on you and take the Patriot building back.
- 39:01Speaker 7: That's me.
- 39:02Speaker 6: It's all in the way you say things. Number one,
- 39:06Speaker 6: they didn't dump it on us. Number two, I believe
- 39:10Speaker 6: I was at that meeting. They had them. All four
- 39:13Speaker 6: of the agencies were there. Lake River was there.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Were you there? I didn't see you there. Well, I
- 39:19Speaker 3: was there because I remember him talking about it.
- 39:21Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know he was laughing when he said that.
- 39:24Speaker 3: I mean, he did say that. I wouldn't laugh because
- 39:27Speaker 3: it was a substantial amount of money. What was it, $ 20?
- 39:30Speaker 3: $ 20, 000 or $ 30, 000 a month it was costing him to
- 39:32Speaker 3: maintain his gateway?
- 39:32Speaker 6: I think he said it was like $ 18, 000 a year
- 39:35Speaker 6: for the electric and whatever else.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I think that's what he said. He was laughing, but
- 39:42Speaker 3: he wanted it off his books. As chairman of the
- 39:45Speaker 3: Port Authority, he wants it off his books. And the
- 39:47Speaker 3: three of you were glad to take it off his
- 39:49Speaker 3: hands and spend over $ 3 million just to wreck it.
- 39:55Speaker 3: You could buy a brand-new office building in downtown Youngstown
- 39:57Speaker 3: that's in pretty decent shape for $ 2. 2 million.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Brand-new.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Now, I understand you want a new one. I understand.
- 40:06Speaker 3: But somebody's going to buy this building and remodel it.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Again, 154,000 feet.
- 40:10Speaker 6: Is this a historic building?
- 40:11Speaker 4: Yes.
- 40:15Speaker 6: Then you can't, I don't think you can make that
- 40:16Speaker 6: ADA compliant. I don't think you could tear out walls
- 40:18Speaker 6: to make it ADA compliant.
- 40:20Speaker 5: It has an elevator.
- 40:21Speaker 3: It has an elevator. There's more.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Stand by. Stand by. Commercial break, and then we come
- 40:26Speaker 2: back with more in a minute. Two-for-one AC and heating
- 40:30Speaker 2: inspections for just $ 49 from A to Z.
- 40:33Speaker 8: For 50 years. 570 WKBN.
- 40:36Speaker 2: All right, so we're back with Gino, the commissioner, and Rich. Okay, Rich,
- 40:41Speaker 2: go ahead and make your point, please.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Well, I understand they want a new building, but we're
- 40:48Speaker 3: still not going to have all of county services under
- 40:50Speaker 3: one roof.
- 40:51Speaker 2: But most of them.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I mean, you just stipulated you're going to have the
- 40:54Speaker 3: health department out at Westchester. You're still going to have
- 40:56Speaker 3: the regional courts out where they are. There are some
- 41:00Speaker 3: things that you're going to put in there that probably
- 41:01Speaker 3: should not be in there. The title agency should not
- 41:04Speaker 3: be there. The title agency, it should either be in
- 41:07Speaker 3: Boardman where all the auto dealers are or Austintown where
- 41:09Speaker 3: it's easier.
- 41:10Speaker 7: Well, who said.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Board of Elections just bought a brand new building, correct?
- 41:15Speaker 3: They were not a brand new. They bought an old school.
- 41:18Speaker 3: So they're not going to be in there.
- 41:20Speaker 6: No, they're not.
- 41:21Speaker 3: So we've established already... We've already established that all of
- 41:24Speaker 3: the county agencies are not going to be under one roof.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Because Board of Elections just made that decision. And these other...
- 41:31Speaker 3: So I don't understand why we have to... I still
- 41:34Speaker 3: don't understand why all of them have to be forced
- 41:37Speaker 3: downtown into this $ 60 million Taj Mahal you're building.
- 41:42Speaker 6: If you come in there and think if you see
- 41:44Speaker 6: a Taj Mahal, I can't wait until it's done because
- 41:47Speaker 6: you can see the Taj Mahal it is.
- 41:49Speaker 2: People are going to.
- 41:51Speaker 6: Be going from hospital rooms to workstations.
- 41:53Speaker 2: I certainly hope it's a nice building. There's nothing wrong
- 41:55Speaker 2: with that.
- 41:57Speaker 3: My mother-in-law's house is in Trumbull County, and she's sick,
- 42:01Speaker 3: so I have to pay her taxes and take care
- 42:03Speaker 3: of that for her. So I go up to the
- 42:05Speaker 3: municipal building in Trumbull County. It's an old office building,
- 42:10Speaker 3: nothing to look at, nothing fancy, but you've got the auditor,
- 42:13Speaker 3: the treasurer, the recorder, all right there. I think it's
- 42:16Speaker 3: the second or third floor of the building. You can
- 42:18Speaker 3: literally go across the hall. But it's not a $ 60
- 42:21Speaker 3: million building, Gina.
- 42:22Speaker 5: $ 60 million.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Do you know what that works out to? That's $ 266
- 42:27Speaker 3: per resident of Mahoney County. Every man, woman, and child
- 42:31Speaker 3: is on the hook for $ 266. Now, granted, you're going
- 42:35Speaker 3: to amortize that over 20 or 30 years on the bonds.
- 42:38Speaker 3: By the way, I mean, is the funding set up?
- 42:41Speaker 3: Do we know what our interest rate on the bonds are?
- 42:44Speaker 6: We're working through that now, yes. I don't know if
- 42:49Speaker 6: they're as high as they've been in 25 years now.
- 42:52Speaker 6: I understand that, and we have very good advisors, and
- 42:56Speaker 6: I understand I have to go to New York and
- 42:58Speaker 6: we have to make our case, but it's pretty well set.
- 43:03Speaker 3: The problem you're running into is the financial assumptions I
- 43:09Speaker 3: assume that you made a year ago are no longer
- 43:11Speaker 3: in effect. And just since February, since this Iran war started,
- 43:16Speaker 3: the interest rates have gone up substantially. I don't know
- 43:19Speaker 3: what they base bonds off of, 10-year treasury, 20-year. But
- 43:23Speaker 3: your interest rate is going to be much higher than
- 43:25Speaker 3: what you guys anticipated.
- 43:26Speaker 2: All right, stand by, Rich. Stand by. Gino, stand by.
- 43:30Speaker 2: I think it's a very productive discussion. And I think
- 43:33Speaker 2: it's an extremely productive discussion. We'll come back right after
- 43:36Speaker 2: the headlines. Stay tuned.

- 47:06Speaker 2: Gino the Commissioner and Rich. Okay, Rich, go ahead and
- 47:09Speaker 2: make your point and then let Gino respond.
- 47:12Speaker 3: The biggest problem I think I have with all this
- 47:14Speaker 3: is when I moved out here to Southridge, My wife
- 47:18Speaker 3: and I went, took a mortgage out at the bank,
- 47:19Speaker 3: and they said, you know, I forget what we asked for,
- 47:23Speaker 3: but let's say we asked for X. And I remember
- 47:25Speaker 3: the mortgage officer saying, oh, you can get way more
- 47:27Speaker 3: money than that. You know, based on your income and
- 47:30Speaker 3: stuff like that, you can afford Y. So if you
- 47:33Speaker 3: want to build more of a house and a fancier
- 47:35Speaker 3: and add all this other, you know, by all means,
- 47:37Speaker 3: we can loan you a lot more than what you're
- 47:38Speaker 3: asking for. Just because you have the money. doesn't mean
- 47:43Speaker 3: you should blow it. Because I was smart enough at
- 47:45Speaker 3: the time thinking, no, I want to build a house,
- 47:47Speaker 3: but I'm still going to have to put furniture in it.
- 47:49Speaker 3: I'm going to have to pay for my kids' lessons,
- 47:50Speaker 3: all this other stuff. I've got other things I need
- 47:52Speaker 3: to do. We're going to take $ 60 million and put
- 47:56Speaker 3: it on the county credit card. Now, that may not
- 47:59Speaker 3: max out the county credit card, but it's not going
- 48:01Speaker 3: to leave a whole lot of room if something down
- 48:03Speaker 3: the line comes along. Because you've only got so much
- 48:06Speaker 3: money that you can borrow and still keep your credit rating.
- 48:10Speaker 3: And I think it was Ditzler said it's 60 million.
- 48:13Speaker 3: I think he said this one time, 60 million, you're
- 48:15Speaker 3: close to maxing out the County credit card or bond rating.
- 48:19Speaker 3: You know, you go to New York when he goes
- 48:21Speaker 3: to New York, he goes and asks for one 20,
- 48:23Speaker 3: they're going to laugh at him. So why are we
- 48:26Speaker 3: throwing all of our money into one Taj Mahal building project?
- 48:32Speaker 3: That's weird that I'm sorry. I don't see the need
- 48:36Speaker 3: to do it the way that they're doing it. And
- 48:37Speaker 3: they're in. And furthermore, At what point in time was
- 48:41Speaker 3: there ever a citizens' committee put together to discuss this
- 48:44Speaker 3: with anybody? We have three people. I give Geno credit.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Geno at least comes on here and defends himself. The
- 48:50Speaker 3: other two numb nuts, you don't hear boo from Anthony.
- 48:54Speaker 3: You don't hear boo from Carol. They don't even have
- 48:56Speaker 3: the courtesy to come on and discuss things with the
- 48:59Speaker 3: public other than their meetings that they have that nobody attends.
- 49:01Speaker 6: Well, they heard verbs stronger than the average grizzly bear,
- 49:03Speaker 6: and they don't want to get beat up maybe.
- 49:04Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Go ahead, Ron. But, I mean, it's just, you know,
- 49:08Speaker 3: so kudos to you. You at least come on and
- 49:10Speaker 3: discuss it. But when we built a new school out
- 49:13Speaker 3: here in South Range in 2008, they had citizens committees
- 49:15Speaker 3: for all kinds of things going on with the school,
- 49:18Speaker 3: where to put it, what did, you know, how. big
- 49:20Speaker 3: it should be, should it be three, you know, should
- 49:21Speaker 3: it be an elementary, middle, high, all of that. We
- 49:24Speaker 3: had no citizens' input on this project at all. You
- 49:27Speaker 3: guys just decided we're going to spend $ 60 million, we're
- 49:30Speaker 3: going to put it on the county credit card, and
- 49:32Speaker 3: this is what we decided we want. And with very
- 49:38Speaker 3: little public input, It may surprise you, but if you
- 49:42Speaker 3: have public input, there's a lot of smart people in
- 49:44Speaker 3: the community that would show up that may have some
- 49:46Speaker 3: really good ideas that you would want to incorporate in
- 49:48Speaker 3: this new building, but you're never going to hear them
- 49:51Speaker 3: because you never asked for their input. I am adamantly
- 49:57Speaker 3: opposed to spending $ 60 million of our tax dollars, $ 266
- 50:03Speaker 3: for every man, woman, and child in Mahoning County on
- 50:05Speaker 3: a single building that still is not going to put
- 50:08Speaker 3: everything under one roof. And everything shouldn't be under one roof.
- 50:11Speaker 3: There's a lot of things. Board of Elections, I'm ticked.
- 50:13Speaker 3: They're still in the city of Youngstown. I mean, granted,
- 50:16Speaker 3: they got a decent school for a decent price, but
- 50:20Speaker 3: what are they going to do with all that? There's
- 50:21Speaker 3: probably room there. That was their board's decision.
- 50:27Speaker 6: What are they going to do with that whole building, Gino?
- 50:29Speaker 3: What are they going to do with that whole building?
- 50:32Speaker 3: They've got a giant building. There's no way the Board
- 50:34Speaker 3: of Elections is going to occupy anywhere near all of
- 50:36Speaker 3: that building. So if the three of you approach them
- 50:39Speaker 3: and say, hey, we think you're going to have some
- 50:40Speaker 3: extra space, maybe we could sublet it from you.
- 50:43Speaker 2: And I'll let Gene respond to it. And this is
- 50:46Speaker 2: up to the Board of Elections, right? You don't have
- 50:48Speaker 2: a say-so on that?
- 50:50Speaker 6: We didn't have a say-so of where they go, but
- 50:51Speaker 6: we certainly have a say-so of what we pay for
- 50:53Speaker 6: as far as rent. The Port Authority is going to
- 50:56Speaker 6: own that building and build it out. The Board of
- 50:58Speaker 6: Elections has an amount of space they need in that building.
- 51:01Speaker 6: And it will be a county building that will be
- 51:04Speaker 6: owned by us at the end of the day. Just
- 51:06Speaker 6: like the veterans on Belmont Avenue, the Port Authority identified
- 51:11Speaker 6: that property, bought it, remodeled it through competitive bidding on
- 51:17Speaker 6: every project, every piece of that.
- 51:19Speaker 3: And then at the end of the day, they turned
- 51:21Speaker 3: it over.
- 51:21Speaker 6: That is now our building. That's what the Port Authority
- 51:24Speaker 6: can do that the county really can't do as well.
- 51:27Speaker 6: That's why the Port Authority is involved. With the Williamson building,
- 51:30Speaker 6: the Port Authority has the ability to buy a school
- 51:34Speaker 6: like that where we didn't. There would have been different avenues,
- 51:37Speaker 6: and there was, like, there was much discussion about that.
- 51:40Speaker 6: Much was gone through.
- 51:42Speaker 7: And it was.
- 51:44Speaker 6: It was in the community, everybody's best interest, that it
- 51:47Speaker 6: go through the Port Authority, and that's the way that
- 51:49Speaker 6: that went. That's why they did it. This project will
- 51:53Speaker 6: be under the Port Authority also. They received the bids. See,
- 51:58Speaker 6: Mahoney County has a long, long, long history of corrupt bidding,
- 52:05Speaker 6: of backroom deals, and everything else. We have nothing to
- 52:09Speaker 6: do with who they pick. whom they pick and the contractors.
- 52:13Speaker 6: We have oversight over how much money is going into
- 52:16Speaker 6: their project, but everything else will be done through the
- 52:19Speaker 6: Port Authority above board. There's going to be an informational
- 52:22Speaker 6: meeting on the 28th of October. I can give more
- 52:24Speaker 6: information on that, Ron, and give it to you for
- 52:27Speaker 6: the public. And if people come out and say they
- 52:31Speaker 6: like this or like that, but trust me, there are
- 52:34Speaker 6: architects building, designing the building. I mean, if somebody thinks
- 52:38Speaker 6: they'd like a... a fixture or some kind of thing
- 52:42Speaker 6: in it, that would be fine. But this building is
- 52:45Speaker 6: going to have everything that the county would need going
- 52:48Speaker 6: forward for as far as we could see for the
- 52:51Speaker 6: next 50, 60 years. Where to retrofit another older building,
- 52:56Speaker 6: even a historical building, and to make it ADA compliant
- 52:59Speaker 6: isn't just an elevator. That doesn't make it ADA compliant.
- 53:06Speaker 3: Anything you do, you're going to retrofit. My whole point
- 53:09Speaker 3: is you're blowing $ 60 million. There are options that are
- 53:14Speaker 3: going to be less expensive. Especially a historic building where
- 53:19Speaker 3: you can get historical credits, federal and state. to help
- 53:22Speaker 3: with the remodeling cost, to help, you know, comply with
- 53:25Speaker 3: ADA and things like that. Question number two.
- 53:27Speaker 7: The courthouse is a historical building.
- 53:29Speaker 6: We have another question. Can I speak to that for
- 53:32Speaker 6: one second?
- 53:32Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely. It's a conversation.
- 53:34Speaker 6: The courthouse is a historical building. One of the office
- 53:37Speaker 6: holders wanted drapes in that building. You wouldn't believe what
- 53:41Speaker 6: it had to do, what you had to do to
- 53:44Speaker 6: hang drapes through the window panes or seals in that
- 53:48Speaker 6: building because it was a historical building. That's great. I mean,
- 53:52Speaker 6: historical buildings, I love them. But there's certain things you
- 53:55Speaker 6: could do and certain things you can't do to a
- 53:58Speaker 6: historical building. I'm not telling you that's the only reason.
- 54:02Speaker 6: But please, I just want you to have that information.
- 54:05Speaker 6: You just can't go to a historical building and widen
- 54:09Speaker 6: the doors to fit a wheelchair or tear out steps
- 54:12Speaker 6: and put a ramp. You just can't do that. And
- 54:15Speaker 6: new buildings, government buildings have to be ADA compliant. That
- 54:19Speaker 6: would probably cost more than the roof, the HVAC, and
- 54:21Speaker 6: the parking lot combined. Believe me. Try to convert it
- 54:24Speaker 6: to make it ADA compliant.
- 54:26Speaker 3: I highly doubt that. You could buy the building for
- 54:29Speaker 3: $ 2. 2 million. That gives you $ 58 million to renovate, and
- 54:31Speaker 3: you still haven't– to equal the same cost. You're not
- 54:34Speaker 3: going to– God, I wish it was that easy. Rich,
- 54:36Speaker 3: you have no idea. My life is so much easier
- 54:38Speaker 3: for everybody. Here's another question for you. Here's another question.
- 54:40Speaker 3: If you remember when they purchased Oak Hill, one of
- 54:43Speaker 3: the main reasons they purchased Oak Hill was because the
- 54:46Speaker 3: morgue was there. and it was going to cost, I forget,
- 54:49Speaker 3: it was some astronomical amount of money back when they
- 54:52Speaker 3: purchased Oak Hill, if they didn't buy it to relocate
- 54:55Speaker 3: the morgue was some astronomical cost. Is the morgue going
- 54:58Speaker 3: to be in your new building, or are we going
- 55:00Speaker 3: to have to relocate the morgue and put it somewhere else?
- 55:03Speaker 3: So we're not just at $ 60 million now. What's it
- 55:07Speaker 3: cost to relocate the morgue?
- 55:09Speaker 6: I don't have those figures, but absolutely it's not going
- 55:11Speaker 6: to be there because everybody's.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Going to be at Oak Hill. So if we're getting
- 55:15Speaker 3: that Oak Hill, and you've got a one-size-fits-all building, but
- 55:18Speaker 3: it doesn't fit all because we can't move the more
- 55:21Speaker 3: into the new building.
- 55:22Speaker 7: Well, of course we can't.
- 55:25Speaker 6: I never said it was a one-size-fits-all. This was the
- 55:28Speaker 6: best option. This was the best plan for going forward.
- 55:33Speaker 6: And those discussions are still happening. The Board of Elections just,
- 55:37Speaker 6: how long did that go on? How long did Beatrice
- 55:39Speaker 6: come down? He even sang to us, Rich. He even
- 55:42Speaker 6: came up with words to Gilligan Violet and sang to us.
- 55:45Speaker 3: That was finally solved. It'll happen. You don't want me
- 55:48Speaker 3: to decode it. He's a Democrat. What can I tell you?
- 55:53Speaker 3: You know, I'll say it. You guys are moving out
- 55:55Speaker 3: of Oak Hill, and you haven't examined the cost. The
- 55:57Speaker 3: three of you haven't examined the cost of relocating the morgue?
- 55:59Speaker 6: Yes.
- 56:00Speaker 3: That's going to be a substantial cost.
- 56:03Speaker 6: Well, it is.
- 56:06Speaker 3: We're in discussions. We'll put it that way.
- 56:07Speaker 6: And there's some things I can give you good answers for,
- 56:10Speaker 6: but I'm not going to speak out of turn because
- 56:13Speaker 6: I don't want it turned on me or I don't
- 56:14Speaker 6: want something I say to cause any consternation for anybody.
- 56:20Speaker 6: But everything's being looked at, Rich, everything. And title's not
- 56:23Speaker 6: going anywhere. We're already over 60 million there. No, we
- 56:31Speaker 6: said the project... No, I never said everything out of
- 56:34Speaker 6: Oak Hill was going to be $ 60 million. I said
- 56:36Speaker 6: the new project was going to be $ 60 million. The
- 56:39Speaker 6: Board of Elections is in there, but we're not including that.
- 56:43Speaker 6: It's not included in the $ 60 million. But, Rich, honest
- 56:46Speaker 6: to God, it's government. It's moving the county forward and
- 56:52Speaker 6: putting us in a better place.
- 56:55Speaker 2: It is.
- 56:55Speaker 6: Believe me, it's going to put us in a better place.
- 56:58Speaker 6: And this wasn't on a whim. This wasn't decided in.
- 57:04Speaker 3: A heartbeat.
- 57:04Speaker 6: Believe me, all things are being considered. An hour this afternoon,
- 57:10Speaker 6: I can't give you every answer to every question. I
- 57:13Speaker 6: want to give you as much information as I can
- 57:15Speaker 6: to the answers to your questions. And I'm willing to
- 57:18Speaker 6: do that. I'm absolutely willing to do that because I
- 57:21Speaker 6: think you're a smart guy and you have your opinion.
- 57:24Speaker 6: And just like everybody would have an opinion. But we
- 57:28Speaker 6: can't change the course of what we're doing because 10
- 57:32Speaker 6: people are opposed to it. There's 225,000 people that we
- 57:37Speaker 6: are responsible for providing services to, and I think there's
- 57:41Speaker 6: over 1,000 workers that we are responsible for making sure
- 57:45Speaker 6: they have a safe place to go to work and
- 57:47Speaker 6: a good place to serve the public. It's a big job, Rich.
- 57:51Speaker 6: You know, I heard you say the other day, I
- 57:53Speaker 6: did hear you say, I think it was yesterday, You
- 57:56Speaker 6: said all these politicians, they run because they want a
- 57:58Speaker 6: better job. Let me tell you, buddy, I.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Worked at the same place.
- 58:02Speaker 6: Well, that's what you could say. But I will tell
- 58:04Speaker 6: you this. I worked at the same place for 31 years.
- 58:08Speaker 6: It was like a family to me. They were like
- 58:10Speaker 6: a family. And I left that. I left the best
- 58:13Speaker 6: job I ever had to do this job. Are you
- 58:15Speaker 6: making more now than you were, Gino?
- 58:18Speaker 4: No.
- 58:18Speaker 3: In the long run, no. Were you making more at
- 58:21Speaker 3: the county? No.
- 58:22Speaker 4: No.
- 58:23Speaker 6: No, not much more. Maybe a little more rich. No,
- 58:25Speaker 6: maybe a little bit more money in my paycheck, but
- 58:28Speaker 6: I have a lot less money at the end of
- 58:29Speaker 6: the day.
- 58:30Speaker 3: I'll tell you that. I bet you're benefiting. You've got
- 58:33Speaker 3: countable benefits. I mean, nobody gets benefits. Like the government gets.
- 58:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 58:40Speaker 3: You made a comment earlier about Boss Lady and the
- 58:43Speaker 3: lead abatement that you guys are doing.
- 58:45Speaker 4: Right.
- 58:45Speaker 3: And you said people don't understand where the money comes from.
- 58:48Speaker 3: I believe you just made that statement. The problem is
- 58:51Speaker 3: you guys don't understand. The money only comes from one place,
- 58:54Speaker 3: the taxpayer.
- 58:55Speaker 2: I know.
- 58:56Speaker 6: But, no, okay, could I– Could I make my point?
- 59:00Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, Jim.
- 59:01Speaker 6: He said, here the commissioners go again. Here the commissioners
- 59:03Speaker 6: go again. That is a HUD grant. That is the
- 59:06Speaker 6: federal government sets the standards. The federal government provides the funding.
- 59:11Speaker 6: If we didn't get that funding, it would go to
- 59:14Speaker 6: another area. The reason why we qualify for that is
- 59:17Speaker 6: because of the need in this area. And there's very
- 59:21Speaker 6: strict stipulations on who gets that money. and how that
- 59:24Speaker 6: money is spent, and for what purpose that money is spent.
- 59:27Speaker 6: So to say that the commissioners blew another $ 36, 000 is
- 59:30Speaker 6: dead wrong.
- 59:32Speaker 3: We didn't.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Hang on a second. Let me chime in for just
- 59:37Speaker 2: a second. Just bear with me, everybody. Basically what you're saying,
- 59:41Speaker 2: and I agree with this, is I was saying to
- 59:43Speaker 2: her the other day, when she was talking about the
- 59:47Speaker 2: grant that we got in the township to redo the
- 59:50Speaker 2: historic log cabin, Which I would say to her and
- 59:55Speaker 2: basically what you're saying on this, if we don't take it,
- 59:58Speaker 2: the program doesn't go away. It just goes to some
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: other community. So we can debate whether it's a good
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: thing or bad thing to have grants. The reality is
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: they're here, and we might as well get our share
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: of it as opposed to letting it go somewhere else.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: That's why it's not a bad thing to have a
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: grant program. that fixes up a historic log cabin in
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Austintown just like it's not a bad idea you're saying
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: to get this grant to fix up this lead abatement
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: because if you whether you like it or not let's
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: say you don't get it it just goes to someone
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: it goes to Cincinnati.
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: Or somewhere Ron just today I signed a grant I
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: signed a the acceptance of a grant for our prosecutors
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: that if we didn't get that grant that would come
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: out of the general fund but we applied for it
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: the prosecutors did a great job they have a grant
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: writer And they got that grant, saving us the money.
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: The money was there. If we didn't apply for that grant,
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: that money would have had to come out of the
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: Justice Fund. Grants aren't a bad thing.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: They're not.
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: I mean, the money is there.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: At what point.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: Do we start thinking about the $ 40 trillion in the
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: federal deficit? This has to end.
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: We can't keep doing this.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Right, but that's not the... I get that, and I
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: agree with that. But that is not how the system
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: is working right now. So if they would have turned
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: the grant down, let's say, in Austintown for the log cabin,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: it doesn't mean the federal government is going to go
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: out of debt. It means that money goes to some
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: other community, or this money would go to some other community.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Until that system is changed... I prefer the money to
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: come to the community in which we live. That's my
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: only argument. Change the system and then stop the grants.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: But as long as the grants are there, let's get them.
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: And I will fight and I push our staff to
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: get every grant dollar we can get in this county.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: Because that's money that doesn't have to come out of
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: our general fund.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: We did lead abatement in one private residence, correct? How
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: does that benefit the people in this area?
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: Well, it benefits the family.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: What was it, $ 36, 000? What was it? On a $ 17, 000,
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: the guy paid $ 17, 000 for the building, and you guys
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: are giving him $ 36, 000 to put into it. Can I
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: get on that program? How do I get grant money?
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: If you have a child, Rich, I'll tell you what.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: If you have a child under six whose blood level,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: if you check your kid's blood level who lives in
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: that house and you prove he lives there, if it's
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: over a certain amount, you could certainly apply for the grant.
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: Because you live in a home town. Move them to
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: a different house, Gino.
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: Because you live in a, what?
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Move them to a different house.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Move them to a different house. I mean, it's the
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: city of Youngstown. There's plenty of housing.
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: Oh, I would, I beg to differ with you. Because,
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: and I'll tell you why. If, when that Phoenix house
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: blew up in Austintown, we had 86 people, families, whatever,
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: homeless immediately. There wasn't a house to rent for those people,
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: and they get a HUD waiver.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: I think it's like.
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: $ 800 and some dollars a month they get towards housing.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: There wasn't a house to rent. They ended up at
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: a hotel because there wasn't a house to rent. It's easy, Rich,
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: honest to God. If you don't know inside, and it's
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: not hidden, but you have to look for it, There's
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: not a quantity of houses.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Well, I'll just stay here.
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: That's not how it is. And if you have a kid.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Why is it my responsibility to take care of these people?
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I'm sorry. At some point, you have to put your
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: foot down and say, you know, you are responsible for you.
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: I'm responsible for the residents of Mahoney County. I don't
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: run HUD's programs. I don't set their standards or their
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: parameters on their grants.
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: Stand by, stand by, stand by.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Stand by back in a minute after this. All right,
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: back to it.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: News Radio 570 WKVN.
- 1:03:50Speaker 14: All right.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Let me see here. I've got to get things set
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: up here. There's Gino. There's Rich. I don't want to
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: talk about grants as far as the big picture is concerned.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Let's stay focused on this. Any other points that you
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: want to bring up, Rich, with Gino?
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Gino said he was talking about that lead abatement. I mean,
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: the house was bought for $ 11, 000. They put $ 36, 000 into it.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: He's complaining about Southside Hospital. you know, costing them so
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: much money. You just put three times the money into
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: lead abatement that the House was worth. You would have
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: better taken a bulldozer and reckoned it.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I'll let Geno speak on it. But that's a HUD
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: grant for a different program. It's apples and oranges. I
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: want to stay focused on the Eastern Gateway. I mean,
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: that's what HUD has that program for. So that's a
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: federal program. It's a whole different ball of wax. So
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: outside of that, I want to go back to the gateway.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Any other issues you want to bring up with it, Rich?
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: And then I'll let Gino speak.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: I just still am not convinced that we should be
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: spending $ 60 million. When there was no citizen input on
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: where we're going with this. These three have decided we're
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: going to spend $ 60 million. They got talked into it by,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: I think, the Port Authority who wants to unload a
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: building that's costing them too much money. Because I think
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: it's funny. They were glad to get rid of Eastern Gateway. Oh, yeah, sure,
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: we'll take the Patriot Building back. He's complaining the Patriot Building,
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: what was it, $ 2 million? Let's say you put $ 3
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: million into it a year at five, and you could
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: have gotten the vast majority of the county stuff out
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: of there. Children's services, you could probably put children's services
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: in one.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Okay, Gino, respond to that. He said that's not true.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: It wouldn't have fit.
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: The vast majority wouldn't have fit.
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: I told you if.
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: Board of elections went in there. Maybe one other thing.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: It did not solve the majority of the problem. And
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: putting children's services out there would be, it would have been,
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: the whole building would have been children's services.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Let's buy the 6 West Federal for $ 2. 2 million. It's
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: an office building, which is mostly what children's services is
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: there for, to meet in offices, and stick the 300
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: jobs that are in there in that building. There's no way,
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: and you're still not anywhere near, no matter how much
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: you put into that building, you're nowhere near $ 60 million, Gino.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: What would it cost to renovate that building, Rich? I
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: don't know. Is it turkey?
- 1:06:43Speaker 22: No.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: We're not going to look into it.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: How much?
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: It's not going to cost $ 60 million, Gino. It's not
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: going to cost $ 60 million. This is what I don't get.
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: It's not serving the purpose. Rich, that building is serving
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: your argument, not the purpose.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: It's okay, though. We can disagree.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: I disagree with people all the time.
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: It's okay. I understand that.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: We're not going to agree on everything.
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: We can't.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: When you ran, one of the things that you said
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: you would insist on is a performance audit. Has the
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: performance audit been done for anything in county government since
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: you got there?
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: No, not a performance audit because, number one, I need
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: two votes for that. And what we have done, what
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: we have audited, we have audited a lot of our
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: internal things. We now have a five-year and a ten-year
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: capital improvement plan because we own other buildings.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: The CSB building is ours. You ran as a Republican.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: You're on that board. Why aren't you there every meeting
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: pounding the gavel saying we need to do performance audits?
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: Because you ran on it. That was one of your
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: platforms you ran on. Right, and there's no heart for that.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: So I'm not going to– I'm going to– I wouldn't
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: say I'm going to pick my battles, but, Rich, there's
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: so much stuff you could do. There's only so much
- 1:08:01Speaker 6: stuff you could do. A lot of things are promised
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: in elections. And I did say I wanted a performance
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: audit of the county, of how we spend it. The
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: biggest performance audit you want to discount was what Ralph
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: did with Oak Hill, and you want to completely discount
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: that audit. No, I don't want to discount it. I
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: will stipulate to you, Oak Hill is a piece of garbage.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: It needs to go. I have no problem with us
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: getting out of Oak Hill at all in any way, shape,
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: or form.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: All right, stand by, stand by, stand by. Back in
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: just a minute with the commissioner and Richard Farmacist.
- 1:08:37Speaker 8: News Radio 570 WKVN.
- 1:08:42Speaker 13: Ohio leaders are starting an effort to recognize first time voters.
- 1:08:46Speaker 13: Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced the first time voter
- 1:08:49Speaker 13: initiative during a visit to a Columbus high school yesterday.
- 1:08:52Speaker 13: Ohioans will be able to request a personalized state proclamation
- 1:08:56Speaker 13: and will get graphics to share with friends on social media.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: After their first visit to the polls.
- 1:09:02Speaker 13: State leaders say the goal of the program is to
- 1:09:03Speaker 13: encourage a lifelong habit of civic engagement among Ohio residents.
- 1:09:08Speaker 13: In the meantime, a former Cincinnati Public Schools assistant principal
- 1:09:10Speaker 13: is facing additional charges of sexual abuse. Prosecutors say Stephen
- 1:09:14Speaker 13: Barton was the assistant principal at Aiken High School when
- 1:09:16Speaker 13: he committed crimes between 2025 and this year. Originally, prosecutors
- 1:09:20Speaker 13: had only one student who they said had been sexually
- 1:09:23Speaker 13: abused by Barton, but now they say four others have
- 1:09:25Speaker 13: been identified. Barton now faces charges including 11 counts of
- 1:09:28Speaker 13: sexual battery.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: I'm Brady Hopkin.
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: Listen on the free iHeartRadio app for all your music, news, talk,
- 1:09:35Speaker 11: and sports radio.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: Podcasts, too.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Download the app. Free. Never sounded so good.
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: A to Z dependable services. Plumbing, septic, heating, cooling, and
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: one-day baths.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Still down.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Ron Verb. On NewsRadio 570 WKBN.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: All right. NewsRadio 570 WKBN. I am going to wait
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: a second here. I've got to get this all set
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: up again. Let me do this. They do that. All right. Gino,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: I will ask you about a few other things just
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: in general that we'll do. Rich, are we okay with
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: the building? Any other points to make on that?
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: I'm not okay with it. You will never convince me
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: ever that they looked at alternatives that don't involve blowing
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: $ 60 million of our money. Because there are alternatives out there.
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: First of all, I mean, they've signed on the dotted
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: line to bring citizens in at this point to moot point.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: because they've already decided to do what they're doing. But
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: there was zero citizen involvement in any of this. This
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: is the reason I keep pounding the table, saying we
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: need to go to a charter form of county government,
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: because you have three people, two Democrats, one who's supposed
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: to be a Republican but doesn't act like it. Oh, oh.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: You don't. I mean, you're a nice guy, Gino. You're
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: a nice guy. Did you know you're in charge of
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: children's services, correct? But that's one of our departments. You
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: have oversight on children's services.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: Financially, correct? They have a board. They have a board.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: Everybody has a board. All these people have boards. What
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: do we need the three of you for? Because it
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: seems like the boards are running everything.
- 1:11:14Speaker 7: Well, go ahead.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: What's your question? I mean, the children's services board, I
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: know somebody that was told to me directly by somebody
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: that works at children's services. They spent $ 3, 000 a day
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: on a client they serve, flying them out to Missouri
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: because nobody in Ohio would take care of this client.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: You talked to me about the guy, I think you
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: had to send him down to Cincinnati. I forget some
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: stupid amount of money you were blowing on that. And
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: that's nice. I understand we've got to take care of
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: the less fortunate. But do we have to provide them with,
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: you know... services that are just ridiculous. I mean, how
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: do you justify if your children's service is spending $ 3, 000
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: a day on one person? I think for the six
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: months they were out there, it's like almost $ 600, 000. It's
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: probably half a percent of the entire county budget was
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: spent on one individual. You look at MRDD. I requested
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: a lot of MRDD's contracts. The amount of money these
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: people are making and the money that they are spending
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: on these people is ridiculous. I mean, I think all
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: of us agree that we need to take care of
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: the less fortunate in our society. But it doesn't mean
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: you have unlimited funds. You're paying people to sit home
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: and watch their autistic kids. I mean, I would love
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: to have gotten paid to watch my kids. Probably the
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: alternative to that would be putting someone in Utah to
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: take care of them for $ 3, 000 a day. And that
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: touches the nerve with me. Because to pay for someone
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: to care for someone or to give a waiver to
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: a parent to stay home and take care of their
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: child is better off. That's a lot of direction home.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: They come after direction home.
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: I've heard recently. Direction home keeps people out of nursing
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: homes and where the cost would be astronomical. If they
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: could keep them in their home and provide the basic
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: services with this money from the senior levy, which I'll
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: tell you this, 4% of that goes to administration. Not you,
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: but other people have said other figures. 4% of that
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: goes to administration. The rest goes to programs. If we
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: could keep people in their home, bring them food to
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: their house, provide somebody to help them care a couple
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: hours a day, isn't that cheaper than a nursing home, Rich?
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: Thankfully, thank God, nobody in my family has been put
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: in a nursing home, or I don't have any autistic
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: people or people that are... are horribly disabled that I
- 1:13:39Speaker 6: have to provide for.
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: I've got somebody in my family right now, Gino, right
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: now that is in a nursing home. I've got somebody
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: right now. You know who's paying for it? We are.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: I'm tired of paying for the whole world. Wouldn't it
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: be cheaper to keep them in their home? Wouldn't it
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: be cheaper to keep them in their home? Putting your
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: foot down and saying no. You need to be more
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: like the guy up in Lake County who just comes
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: in and says, nope, nope, even if it passes. You
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: at least stood up for the taxpayer. I'm tired of
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: getting fleeced on all of this. It's fleeced.
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: It's Taj Mahal. Those words, Rich, I hope that this
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: conversation would help with those words, but it's okay. I
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: understand we could disagree, and I told you I like
- 1:14:23Speaker 6: it when we're done. I do like it. I'm here
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: to explain what I can't explain. And if we don't agree,
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: we don't agree. But as far as six, would you
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: say it was six West Federal Street or something? Is
- 1:14:34Speaker 6: there 300 parking spaces around that building?
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: It's funny that you go, because if you go to
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: the website, if you go to the website, it says
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: there's a parking deck a block away. It's exactly what
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: it says. That's one of the selling points they're using
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: on this building, a block away.
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: Which parking deck is that? Because the only other parking
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: deck that I know of down in that area is
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: next to our building. And the parts of it you
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: can use and parts of it you can't because there's
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: parts of it that aren't stable.
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: There's not a lot.
- 1:15:03Speaker 6: Of parking down there.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: I'm telling you, there's no parking down there for 300 cars.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: Build a parking deck, Gino. Build a parking deck. Where?
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: Here's a novel idea. It's the city of Youngstown. You
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: guys got $ 45 million in Biden bucks.
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: The city got $ 85 million in Biden bucks. That was
- 1:15:21Speaker 6: one I got there. And believe me, there's been discussions
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: about that money.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: What do we have to show for in this area?
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: So you figure between you and the city, $ 130, $ 40
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: million in Biden bucks. Name me one concrete thing we
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: need to show for it.
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: $ 88 million to the school board.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: $ 88 million to the school board.
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: And, Rich, I'm following up on ARPA funds every day.
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: But you can't know that, but it's okay. I understand that.
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: But that money, that money, there's supposed to be accountability
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: for every dollar. And, Rich, I'm looking. Believe me, I'm looking.
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: But you don't know that, but that's okay.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: All right. Let me end it there, Rich and Gino.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: I'll let you take calls from anybody that has any
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: questions for you outside of that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: Okay?
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Okay. All right, and then I'll let Gino go. All right, Rich,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: thank you. It was a productive discussion. If you've got
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: comments or questions for Gino, give us a call, 330-729-9977.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Let me ask you this. When you were running for office,
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: is it different running for office than it is being
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: in office, and then once you're in office, understanding the
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: ramifications and the rules and the regulations that you have
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: to follow?
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: Ron, it is like, unbelievably. Do you know the truck
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: driver would have thought that I needed a comprehensive audit
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: to find everything, to see where money might be being spent?
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: As a commissioner, as a sitting commissioner, I have the
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: privilege of pulling up anything I want. We have two
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: people in our OMB department that run budgets and everything else,
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: and they do a great job. They have a handle
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: on everything. Plus, we get help from the auditors and
- 1:17:06Speaker 6: everybody else. But, yeah, it's absolutely different. I mean, I
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: could stand there and pound my fist and say what
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: I want to do and what I'm going to do.
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: But getting inside, it's a completely different perspective on county government.
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: Some of it I still don't like, and a lot
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: of it I've changed, and I'm going to change some more.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Do you get.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: From a standpoint, one time when we had a discussion,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: we were talking and this goes back to prior to
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: the homestead exemption or the owner occupancy going, being approved.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: And you said to me on air, well, we got
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: to take care of these people and these people and
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: these people. And I guess my comment about that is,
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Who takes care of the taxpayer that's suffering from all
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: of this? I mean, you understand the burden of property taxes.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: MRDD is asking for a monumental levy that if it passes,
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: it's going to put a huge burden on people in
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Mahoning County. If you live in the city of Canfield,
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: they got a huge school levy and an MRDD levy.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: I mean, we will acknowledge it's hundreds of dollars additional
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: on top of what they're paying.
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: And they're basing it on $ 100, 000, and I don't know
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: where you can buy a $ 100, 000 house in Canfield, Poland,
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: or these other areas.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: I mean, I know Gino, the truck driver, would say,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: this is out of control. No one's thinking about the
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: taxpayer and the citizen. What about Gino, the commissioner?
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: Gino, the commissioner, would say this, and I tell people this,
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: and I've argued with my friends over this, and I've
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: had discussions with others. It's far as the DD levy,
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: we have the DD levy, the MRDD levy, the senior levy,
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: and I forget what they're... I think there might be
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: one other one that come under us. Now, those levies
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: have passed historically, 60, 65, 40, 45, or whatever, and
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: So everybody says, well, just don't let them put it on.
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: And my thing is, they say, well, we don't want
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: those levies. And I say, you know, it's not fair
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: that I'm telling a majority of people your vote doesn't count.
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: It doesn't matter what you want because the vocal minority
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: wants it this way. I want people to vote. Do
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: I think property taxes are too high?
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: Do I think the state has put more of a
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: burden on our homeowners?
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Yes, of course.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: If you'd be a fool to say, no, it's fine,
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: just vote for every levy. But the counties are put
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: in a position, and what scares the hell out of me,
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: they're talking about getting rid of the Ohio income tax altogether.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: That's $ 9 to $ 11 billion a year that is going
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: to come out of the budgets. And the state could
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: very easily say, well, it's on the counties to provide
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: the services now, unfunded mandates, and it's going to be worse.
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: So we do need a realignment of how things are
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: paid for at the state level and what the county
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: is responsible for.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: I don't want to disenfranchise. I'll use one of Beatrice's terms.
- 1:20:13Speaker 6: I don't want to disenfranchise any voters. I don't want
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: to say, no, we're not putting that levy on because
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: I got 10 people calling me.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: They don't agree with it.
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: So you don't get an opportunity to vote on it.
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: I couldn't afford that kind of increase in property tax myself.
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: I'll say that.
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Uh, it's just, uh, all right, let's take some calls
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: instead of, uh, all right. Uh, you're on with Gino.
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: Hello.
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: Ron.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Yes. Uh, here she is. The boss lady. Go ahead.
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: Maddie, Maddie, Maddie.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: All right. Go ahead and make your comments. Cause I
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: got a bunch of calls here. Go ahead.
- 1:20:48Speaker 23: I got a question.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: My concern is this.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:50Speaker 23: This, um, this MRDD levy, MCBDD levy, you know, they're
- 1:20:55Speaker 23: asking for 15.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: And a half million a year.
- 1:21:01Speaker 23: The amount that they need is $ 8 million to meet
- 1:21:04Speaker 23: their match. They're even asking for almost double than what
- 1:21:09Speaker 23: they need to unlock, quote, unlock more funds. With the
- 1:21:16Speaker 23: lack of oversight that we have seen as members of
- 1:21:20Speaker 23: this community, of this county, and all of the stuff
- 1:21:23Speaker 23: that's happening with dollars right now, I also dug into
- 1:21:28Speaker 23: some And I'm a bit concerned of the oversight here.
- 1:21:34Speaker 23: I mean, people, the program that exists today is not
- 1:21:39Speaker 23: the same program, and it's not providing the same types
- 1:21:43Speaker 23: of people with the same services. When we say MCBDD,
- 1:21:47Speaker 23: you think of developmentally disabled. You think of, like, severely
- 1:21:53Speaker 23: mentally disabled people. That is not, it has expanded. Not
- 1:21:57Speaker 23: to say that there aren't those cases and those outlier cases,
- 1:22:00Speaker 23: and those are important, and I don't think there's anybody
- 1:22:02Speaker 23: in the world that's going to say, oh, my God,
- 1:22:03Speaker 23: you shouldn't do it. They have expanded what that coverage is. Autism,
- 1:22:08Speaker 23: things like that, right? Mild autism and ADHD. Parents are
- 1:22:16Speaker 23: being paid to sit at home. In fact, I just
- 1:22:19Speaker 23: looked yesterday. I'll share it with you.
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: It's actually kind of comical.
- 1:22:22Speaker 23: There is a whole entire video series of people teaching
- 1:22:26Speaker 23: you how to scam the system. Now, the people that
- 1:22:29Speaker 23: approve this is MCBDD. They approve this. So they say
- 1:22:34Speaker 23: whether that person can get more money. They're getting paid.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: There are people.
- 1:22:39Speaker 23: Who are making $ 100, 000 a year. $ 100, 000 a year.
- 1:22:41Speaker 5: All right, hang on.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Listen to what he's saying.
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:22:45Speaker 23: Yes.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:22:47Speaker 23: And if you saw the number of whistleblowers, which they're
- 1:22:53Speaker 23: calling themselves because I cannot say their name, that are
- 1:22:56Speaker 23: telling me, But there are people living in these crazy
- 1:23:00Speaker 23: big-sized homes. There are people who are ripping us off.
- 1:23:04Speaker 23: The lack of oversight across all of these organizations has
- 1:23:09Speaker 23: me dumbfounded. And we continue. We already gave them a
- 1:23:14Speaker 23: forever levy, okay? They want more money. So now they're
- 1:23:18Speaker 23: asking us for 15 million when they, their numbers say
- 1:23:23Speaker 23: they need eight to unlock more money.
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: No, no, no, no.
- 1:23:29Speaker 23: Nobody's going to lose services. And did you know, did
- 1:23:32Speaker 23: you know, Gino, that the state has a process built
- 1:23:37Speaker 23: in for if all the levy money went away, all
- 1:23:40Speaker 23: of it tomorrow. Let's pretend like the forever levy was
- 1:23:43Speaker 23: never the biggest mistake you made in your career. Let's
- 1:23:45Speaker 23: pretend like that doesn't exist. There's no levies for MCBDD.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: Tomorrow morning, hold on, tomorrow morning.
- 1:23:54Speaker 23: If every levy goes away, if every levy goes away,
- 1:23:58Speaker 23: all of them, tomorrow, $ 0 to MCBDD. No levies exist.
- 1:24:03Speaker 23: The state already has a mechanism in place. The providers
- 1:24:07Speaker 23: will still get paid. Those people will still get their benefits.
- 1:24:10Speaker 23: But us dummies, go check into that, Gino. That'll be
- 1:24:14Speaker 23: a simple Google search. Those do not go away.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: They have a backup process.
- 1:24:19Speaker 6: I'll go to the directors. Google.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: Go.
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: Good.
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: I told you, give him my phone number.
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: I want him to call me.
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: You found out. You found out.
- 1:24:27Speaker 23: I can do that.
- 1:24:28Speaker 6: Madeline, do I do that? Didn't I do that?
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: Don't I do that?
- 1:24:32Speaker 23: I wanted to.
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: You didn't have him call me.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Wait a second. Wait a second. Boss Lee, let him talk.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Don't talk over each other. It doesn't get productive.
- 1:24:41Speaker 6: Ron, congratulations. Her husband can't get her to be quiet.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: I'm telling you all the time.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: Well, you know what?
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: I am a real man here.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Let me hike up in the chair a little bit.
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: God bless you.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: I bow to you, Ron Burr. I bow to you,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: Ron Burr. There you go. I get it.
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: Madeline, was that video telling them how to cheat in
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: Mahoning County? Is that what you're saying, or is it
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: the national thing? No, it's the national thing.
- 1:25:05Speaker 23: Hold on.
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: You're not letting me talk now.
- 1:25:09Speaker 7: Let me finish.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: No, I wasn't done.
- 1:25:12Speaker 16: Okay.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Did I prove you on one occasion, and I don't
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: want to rub it in, but you can't rely on
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: Google and you can't rely on AI searches for numbers
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: all the time.
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: No, I agree.
- 1:25:24Speaker 24: You can't rely on that.
- 1:25:26Speaker 23: You proved to me one time that a guy's salary
- 1:25:28Speaker 23: was incorrect, but that was because what they reported was incorrect.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: What came up.
- 1:25:33Speaker 23: So it pulled down incorrect information.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: Listen, you're respected in the community. I just want you
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: to sound intelligent. I don't want to call in and say, look.
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: Oh, Jesus.
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: You know what? I want you to sound intelligent for
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: a change, too, boss lady.
- 1:25:52Speaker 6: Oh, Ron, don't even.
- 1:25:53Speaker 13: Ron.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: Oh, Ron.
- 1:25:55Speaker 23: I'm going to drive up there.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you're a lousy bowler, too.
- 1:26:02Speaker 23: No, I'm telling you. There are plans in place already.
- 1:26:07Speaker 23: Go look it up. Call him. Call Whitaker. Tell Whitaker
- 1:26:10Speaker 23: to call me.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Tell Whitaker to call me.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: All right. Well, you can do that. I've got to
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: take more calls. Are you done? Anything else quickly before
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: my break runs?
- 1:26:19Speaker 23: I think I summed that up rather well.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: All right. Thank you. Well, have Whitaker call her, I guess,
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: and they can argue.
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: With each other.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: I put the whip down on her last night.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: Maybe you need to go bowling with her.
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: Oh, my God, please.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: Stand by. We've got a few more minutes with the commissioner,
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: and then he'll part ways, and I'll try to get
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: more calls on right after this.
- 1:26:46Speaker 23: I'm Dr.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: Cheryl Figliano from 570 WKBN.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: All right, from NewsRadio 570 WKBN. I will tell all
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: of you this, and I'll say it with Gino on
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: the line. I have learned a lot today. And in
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: a sense of I think everyone can have an opinion,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: but sometimes some of the arguments that I hear don't
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: make sense. It doesn't matter whether I agree or disagree
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: with grants or if the country's $ 40 trillion in debt.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: The reality is they're here today, folks. And I would
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: rather this community get the grants than they go to
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: Columbus or somewhere else in the state or in the country.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: I mean, it isn't a case of whether grants are
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: good or bad. It is the reality. And to get
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: them here in our community is not a bad thing.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: It's a good thing. I would like more of them
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: to come here. You can have an argument some other
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: time whether or not we should have them in the
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: first place, but they do exist. Let's get them here.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: And one other point that I would like to make
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: that I'm coming to get an understanding of. is you
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: can't always remodel an old building and make it functional.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: I understand what you're saying. You're saying the parking deck
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: was condemned, so it's got to get ripped down. Why
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: buy some old building with more problems if we can
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: build something new and we don't have to remodel it
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: and have asbestos and we can operate from those standards?
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: It's hard to argue with that. I could put a
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: second story on an old house, which is still an
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: old house, or I could build a brand new one,
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: and it would be more energy efficient and probably safer
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: in the long run. So, folks, I'm just here to say,
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: and I say it publicly, I'm not so stubborn in
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: my opinions that I can't learn and change and roll
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: with the punches. And I think everybody made some really
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: legitimate points, including Gino, I think. And you and I
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: have gone around and round on a number of things.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: But I'm not going to be so bold-headed that I
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: don't listen and hear some of what you're saying that
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: you've learned from what the regulations are and what the
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: criteria is sitting in that chair. Correct? Correct.
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: Absolutely, and Ron, just a case in point. Boss Lady,
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: we'll use that. Boss Lady says there's a plan in
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: the state that if all the tax levies go away, they're.
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: Going to fund everything.
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: Ron, the reason why everyone is asking for more money
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: from the schools to the developmental disabled levy is because
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: the state is cutting those funds. The state changed and
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: Bill Whitaker can make a good point.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: Let me do my break and then a few more
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: minutes afterwards to elaborate on that, all right? Can you
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: just bear with me to elaborate on that? I'm taking
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: a lot of everybody's time, but I think it's a
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: productive discussion. We'll come back right after the headlines on
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: NewsRadio 570 WKBN.
- 1:29:47Speaker 19: Hey, is your roof leaking?
- 1:29:49Speaker 17: Celebrating 100 years as the Valley's trusted news, weather, and
- 1:29:54Speaker 17: talk station.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: 570 WKBN. Youngstown.
- 1:30:06Speaker 18: It's less than 100 miles from the coast. Lisa Brady,
- 1:30:09Speaker 18: Fox News. Hurricane Isaias speeding toward the Florida Panhandle with
- 1:30:13Speaker 18: conditions deteriorating along the Gulf Coast.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: It's probably.
- 1:30:17Speaker 19: will land as a category three is our judgment.
- 1:30:23Speaker 18: And Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says that's expected tonight. Some
- 1:30:26Speaker 18: areas facing a storm surge of up to nine feet.
- 1:30:29Speaker 21: Winds could get upwards of 100 miles per hour, especially
- 1:30:31Speaker 21: along the Florida extreme west coast. But it's the eastern
- 1:30:35Speaker 21: side of the circulation that's going to have the worst
- 1:30:37Speaker 21: of the impacts. Freshwater flooding, heavy rain right now, more
- 1:30:40Speaker 21: on the lighter, moderate showers at times. Some pockets of
- 1:30:43Speaker 21: heavy rain, but that's only going to pick up. as
- 1:30:45Speaker 21: it rapidly approaches the coast.
- 1:30:46Speaker 18: Fox weather's Katie Byrne in Pace, Florida, outside Pensacola. Mobile,
- 1:30:50Speaker 18: Alabama has an overnight curfew beginning three hours from now.
- 1:30:54Speaker 18: President Trump had been planning to attend tomorrow night's college
- 1:30:57Speaker 18: football game between Alabama and Georgia in Tuscaloosa, but now says...
- 1:31:01Speaker 18: It's important to have first responders and others focused on
- 1:31:03Speaker 18: the storm, so he will not go. The president does
- 1:31:06Speaker 18: still plan to travel to Tennessee tomorrow to rally for
- 1:31:09Speaker 18: Republican candidates. Tonight, he'll do that in New York State,
- 1:31:12Speaker 18: where he's expected to criticize sanctuary policies after a man
- 1:31:16Speaker 18: was shot and injured by ICE agents who were trying
- 1:31:18Speaker 18: to arrest him in New York City yesterday. Homeland Security
- 1:31:22Speaker 18: Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen tells Fox the Dominican national is
- 1:31:25Speaker 18: in the U.S.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: Illegally.
- 1:31:26Speaker 18: And is on probation for multiple crimes.
- 1:31:28Speaker 12: Four robbery charges, two charges of felony assault, felony larceny, assault,
- 1:31:36Speaker 12: weapons assault, weapons possession of misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen property,
- 1:31:40Speaker 12: and two felony charges of dangerous drugs, all in three years.
- 1:31:43Speaker 12: And that's how.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: Long he's been in the country.
- 1:31:45Speaker 18: The New York City mayor and New York governor pressing
- 1:31:47Speaker 18: for his release and the release of body cam footage
- 1:31:49Speaker 18: during a call with President Trump yesterday. An ICE official
- 1:31:52Speaker 18: says agents opened fire when the man's car drove toward
- 1:31:55Speaker 18: their vehicles and they didn't know his five-year-old son was
- 1:31:57Speaker 18: in back.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: He was not injured.

- 1:33:10Speaker 2: Back to it, News Radio 570, WKBN and Ron Verb, 504,
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: before I take a call or two. What are your
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: thoughts on this situation with Saccone and the controversy that's
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: going on there? I mean, it's just the bill's not
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: getting paid with the court and that whole situation. And
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: I know the Republicans and Democrats say you need to quit,
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: and he's not going to do that.
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: Well, Ron, it's... everything's been in the paper as far
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: as the clerk and now that office is functioning or
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: not functioning. The clerk put in a request for a
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: budget addition of $ 100, 000 to the commissioners. He needs $ 100, 000
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: more dollars to run through through the end of the year.
- 1:33:55Speaker 6: Now the budget, I think the budget is like locked
- 1:33:57Speaker 6: in around October and it's a budget. You got to
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: stick to your budget. If you go over and of
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: course there's things that happen where you could go over
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: The elected official would come in, explain everything, show the commissioners,
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: because we're spending the.
- 1:34:12Speaker 7: Residents' money.
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: And if there's an ask, and they could show, you know,
- 1:34:17Speaker 6: here's why we need this, here's what happened, here's all the.
- 1:34:19Speaker 7: Reasons, okay, fine. If it's justified, we give it to them. Well,
- 1:34:25Speaker 7: the clerk asked for.
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: A $ 100, 000 addition to his budget, which is a little
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: under one-tenth of the year. We're in October. We're just
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: in October. He's got to go the rest of the year.
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: So he asked for a meeting with the commissioners, a
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: staff meeting, to request this money, a budget addition. So
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: he set out an invitation. He accepted the invitation. Now,
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: when you accept an invitation through the county system, that
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: means you'll be there. Well, the clerk didn't show up.
- 1:34:56Speaker 6: He spent two of his representatives there. He didn't bring
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: with him anything. They didn't bring any figures. They just
- 1:35:07Speaker 6: said the clerk's requesting $ 100, 000 because we've got to buy
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: this or that, and we've got to buy these files.
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: And if we don't get these files by Friday, it's
- 1:35:17Speaker 6: going to put a burden on the courts.
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: You should have responded to him. You want more money.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: How about paying the electric bill down at the court?
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: How about showing up to work? Here's one, Mr. Cohen.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: Why don't you show up? Why don't you answer to
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: the public?
- 1:35:31Speaker 6: And again, he's an elected official. But, Ron, here's my concern.
- 1:35:34Speaker 6: If I have a bonfire going in my backyard, I'm
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: not going to go throw $ 100 bills at it unless
- 1:35:41Speaker 6: you tell me why I've got to stoke the fire
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: or put more wood on the fire. I said, and
- 1:35:47Speaker 6: my colleagues agreed, that the clerk has to come in,
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: just like any other public official would come in, come
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: to work, come to our meeting, justify the need, because
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: you want to go way over your budget. Tell us why,
- 1:36:02Speaker 6: because we're on... Just like Rich, just like Boss Lady,
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: we're accountable to the residents, and it's their money we're spending.
- 1:36:09Speaker 6: I'm not going to throw $ 100 bills in a bonfire
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: if I don't have all the answers. So we sent
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: out another, you know, the clerk asked for another meeting.
- 1:36:18Speaker 6: We said, well, here's the thing on the meeting. You've
- 1:36:21Speaker 6: got to bring documents, bring yourself, and talk to the commissioners.
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: You know, because it's not our money. You won't see
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: a picture of me with a big check with my
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: name on it giving it away. It's not my money.
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: It's the resident's money. And I watch the resident's money.
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: And that's what we're going to do. And the clerk
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: is going to abide like everybody else. We are the
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: budget authority, and that's what we do. So when he
- 1:36:46Speaker 6: comes in, he wants to come in and explain it
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: and justify it.
- 1:36:50Speaker 7: We'll look at it.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: Right. I mean, listen, I can sit back and I
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: could say to everybody listening, which is true. I mean,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: there's no doubt Canfield has such a situation out there
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: with that middle school and it definitely is outdated. All
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: I'm saying is if listen, all I can give you
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: is my opinion. If I was in Canfield, I would say, no,
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: I can't afford this gigantic levy they're putting on. and
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: I certainly can't afford this MRDD levy. So as a voter,
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: I have a say-so to say no to each of them,
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: just as any other voter has the ability to say
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: yes or anything else. I mean, that is democracy, and
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: then we live with the outcome. But, I mean, people's
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: got to get out and vote on these financial issues.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: If they don't, then they are to blame. Let me
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: take some quick calls and cut you loose. Okay, you're
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: on the air with Gino. Hello. Yes, Ted, go ahead.
- 1:37:41Speaker 26: Hey, I want to say thank you to Gino. I
- 1:37:44Speaker 26: think he clarified a lot of things today.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: I would agree.
- 1:37:48Speaker 26: I think I support all his decision-making.
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: He explained himself. He made it pretty clear. Now, you
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: could disagree, but that doesn't make him wrong. Boss Lady,
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: for example, it's easy to misrepresent facts. I don't know
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: what you guys are talking about with Whitaker or this
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: guy Celery, but she spoke about the county giving away
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: some money to some guy to fix his house.
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: Here we are, we find out the truth, it's HUD money.
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: The Mahoning County government is a facilitator for HUD, if
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: I'm not mistaken, right? You know, you guys don't have
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: HUD dollars.
- 1:38:19Speaker 6: Yeah, we actually, it's a competitive grant. There's like 600
- 1:38:24Speaker 6: of them in the country, and we were blessed to
- 1:38:27Speaker 6: have a guy in our employee.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: That works for the lead-based thing.
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: He writes the grants.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: We get the money.
- 1:38:33Speaker 6: We're able to help. It's basically, it helps 600-year-old kids
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: so they don't get lead poisoning.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: Right, but my point is you don't make the rules
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: the federal government does. You don't fund it the federal
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: government does. It's not our county tax dollars. So Gino
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: wasn't giving away general fund dollars to some guy.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: That is correct. And even if you're against the grants,
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: like I said, Ted, that doesn't mean they go away.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: You get them to go away. But in the meantime,
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: since they're there, get your share of it.
- 1:39:03Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:39:04Speaker 26: And then when someone like the boss lady comes on
- 1:39:06Speaker 26: and misrepresents the facts like that, it really makes it
- 1:39:09Speaker 26: hard on all of us. And I'll say the same
- 1:39:12Speaker 26: thing for Rich. No disrespect to the boss lady and Rich,
- 1:39:14Speaker 26: but no matter what Gino said, it wasn't good enough
- 1:39:17Speaker 26: for Rich. He kept moving the goalposts so much to
- 1:39:19Speaker 26: where he started talking about when he bought his house. Well,
- 1:39:23Speaker 26: running the county government and planning buildings for these programs
- 1:39:27Speaker 26: to facilitate their mission isn't like buying a house. And
- 1:39:32Speaker 26: I think Gino made it pretty clear and concise as
- 1:39:35Speaker 26: to the decision-making, what went into it, and how it
- 1:39:38Speaker 26: was done. You and I may not like how the
- 1:39:40Speaker 26: government's run, but Gino doesn't make the rules. You know,
- 1:39:43Speaker 26: it's like officiating a football game. You may not like
- 1:39:46Speaker 26: the rules, but the guy's got to call the game
- 1:39:49Speaker 26: according to the rules, right?
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: Established.
- 1:39:51Speaker 26: Everyone's complaining. All the complaints I heard have to do
- 1:39:54Speaker 26: with a bigger picture of how government is set up
- 1:39:57Speaker 26: and run. And Gino doesn't make those decisions. Gino does
- 1:40:01Speaker 26: what the law tells him to do. And I think,
- 1:40:03Speaker 26: you know, he's not taking the easy way out. He's
- 1:40:06Speaker 26: had the courage to come forward. Take these beatings that
- 1:40:09Speaker 26: people are giving him. And he stood his ground and
- 1:40:11Speaker 26: he told you why. And I think that's very respectable
- 1:40:15Speaker 26: because not many people have the courage to do what
- 1:40:17Speaker 26: Gino did.
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I do that. I thank him for that.
- 1:40:21Speaker 26: And I think he made his point very clear. You
- 1:40:23Speaker 26: may disagree with the process.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: He did what.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: Was best for Mahoney County as a whole.
- 1:40:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: And let me put it this way. You know, mega
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: dittos to that. I would agree that I think he
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: came on. I think he made his points quite clearly.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: And I'll be the first guy to say, you know,
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: when I'm when I'm inaccurate or wrong on something, I
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: have no problem admitting when I'm wrong because I've been
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: married a long time. So I'm used to admitting when
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: I'm wrong.
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: Well, you've never been right then, Ron.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Right. I mean, granted, and I tell both of you this.
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: My wife thinks I'm really smart because she says, way
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: to go, Einstein, all the time when I'm at home.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: So I know what it feels like, guys, to be.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: I agree.
- 1:41:02Speaker 27: I agree.
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: I'm in the same boat. I think all three of
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: us guys are in the same boat.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: But, I mean, we can all have opinions. It's what
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: I say with Trump and the war. Listen. I'm against it.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: I think it's a mistake. But I don't know everything
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: he knows or what Rubio knows. I don't know what
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: information they have that they're not telling me. And I
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: asked Gino a key question. I said, Gino, is it
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: different when Gino, the truck driver, running as opposed to
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: now being in the seat? And he was honest enough
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: to answer yes. Correct, Gino?
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: 100%.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: 100%.
- 1:41:35Speaker 24: You know, I want to say this, too, because I
- 1:41:38Speaker 24: think this is so important, especially at election time. You know,
- 1:41:42Speaker 24: up until this year, I'd never known Geno, never met him,
- 1:41:45Speaker 24: really never had a conversation like we're doing now. But
- 1:41:48Speaker 24: the reason I voted for.
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: Geno, and this is just me, Steve, Ted the conservative.
- 1:41:53Speaker 26: When I look at people on the ballot, I think
- 1:41:56Speaker 26: I am a good judge of character. And I try
- 1:41:59Speaker 26: to vote for good people. Because if you vote a
- 1:42:02Speaker 26: good person in the office, they're going to make the
- 1:42:04Speaker 26: best decision that they can in the best interest of
- 1:42:08Speaker 26: the people. And I think Geno's a good guy. I
- 1:42:11Speaker 26: really do, and I think we're seeing that as he
- 1:42:13Speaker 26: came on today and he's explaining the decision-making process. He
- 1:42:17Speaker 26: doesn't like the government. He told you he doesn't like
- 1:42:19Speaker 26: how the government's set up, but he can't change it.
- 1:42:21Speaker 26: He has to play within the rules that he's given.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: So I think it's important. Vote for good people. Vote
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: for honest people that are willing to say, hey, I
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: may have made a mistake. Things are a little bit
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: different now. So that's important.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: And listen, I'll be the first guy to say, once again—
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: You know, these levies are put on, and I have
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: one vote, and I can vote against them. And that's
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: how democracy works. And I will vote against them.
- 1:42:48Speaker 26: You know, I'm... Just like I'll vote against every Democrat.
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: On the ballot, right?
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Well, sometimes... You know, I'll tell you, when you say
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: something like that, and you can, I have no problem
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: with that, but just as a side note, you know,
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: I was.
- 1:43:03Speaker 26: That doesn't mean we're not going to get a bad one.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: No, I was... I was talking with John Boceri yesterday,
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: and he is a first-class individual. Yeah, good guy. I mean,
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: if you know his history and everything. There you go.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: He's a Democrat. All right.
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: Okay, guys. Thank you very much.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: All right. Thank you.
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: Thank you, sir.
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: You're on with Gino.
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: Hello.
- 1:43:22Speaker 15: Well, first of all, Ron, you are wrong all the time.
- 1:43:25Speaker 15: And second of all, the Ted guy... as far as
- 1:43:31Speaker 15: a good judge of character, the jury's still out. But
- 1:43:34Speaker 15: I called you to tell you this. I'm impressed, Ron,
- 1:43:37Speaker 15: to have Gino and Rich have the conversations that they had.
- 1:43:43Speaker 15: Both of them had valid points. Both of them didn't
- 1:43:47Speaker 15: get personal.
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: It was a productive discussion.
- 1:43:50Speaker 15: It showed us what was going on.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: I agree.
- 1:43:53Speaker 15: I'm not picking sides, but I will tell you, Ron,
- 1:43:56Speaker 15: it's a great show.
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: It's an Emmy Award show.
- 1:44:00Speaker 15: I'm telling you, this was great.
- 1:44:01Speaker 6: And, Gino, you know, I appreciate that.
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: Thank you for showing up, man.
- 1:44:07Speaker 15: I'm impressed because people don't usually do what you did,
- 1:44:09Speaker 15: you know, to take the slings and arrows. And Rich
- 1:44:13Speaker 15: is a good guy, too, right? But that Ted guy,
- 1:44:16Speaker 15: I don't know. So you guys have a good weekend, okay?
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: All right, Gino, I know that I've imposed on a
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: lot of time. Anything else that you would like to
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: address the public on today?
- 1:44:28Speaker 6: No, Ron, I just want you to know that, honest
- 1:44:30Speaker 6: to God, I'm the same guy that ran. I'm finding
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: out a lot of things about government. I've learned a lot,
- 1:44:36Speaker 6: of course, in almost two years. And I'm not done.
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: I am making the changes that I can. And I,
- 1:44:44Speaker 6: honest to God, I am humbled to be in this position.
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: And I love serving the public. And everything I do,
- 1:44:52Speaker 6: every day when I go into work, I try to
- 1:44:55Speaker 6: solve what I can solve, change what I can change
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: to make a better Mahoney Valley. I really do, because
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: I love it here. And that's not political speak. That's
- 1:45:04Speaker 6: not anything else.
- 1:45:05Speaker 7: I love my job.
- 1:45:06Speaker 6: I love being able to affect change, and we're making changes.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: You know, like I'm reading an email, and this is
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: what is frustrating, and I just read this. I wonder
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: if any of the contractors doing the work on a
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: new county building boondoggle will donate to Gino's campaign fund. Okay. Now,
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: listen to this. I wrote him about the inconvenience to
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: pay for parking and to drive into crime-ridden areas. Never
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: heard back from him. I will vote for them before
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: I vote for Gino. Now, when I read something like that,
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: when I read something like that to this emailer, I asked,
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: you know, about the parking garage. I and and ask
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: him about people having to pay to park. Then he
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: explained how, okay, if we have to pay to park,
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: then we can maintain the parking garage, just like when
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: you pay on a toll road. He explained all of that.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: It might not be the answer that you like, e-mailer,
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: but he's saying, okay, if you go down, we're going
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: to have a parking garage. And if you pay to
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: get in, then that money goes to maintain the thing
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: which needs to be maintained. It has to be done. Right.
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: I mean, not everything is free.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: You know and this idea so he answered your questions
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: and you say well i'll vote for them before that's
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: just stupidity caller it's no it's not fine it is
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: it is stupidity and and it's not always driving into
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: downtown youngstown is not a crime-ridden area i mean it's
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: a it's it's just not that so i just wanted
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: to to you know and there's and there's pro ones
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: too gino that uh boss lady is Kamala Harris, shrieks constantly,
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: but Harris wasn't as angry and a fool like boss lady. Wow.
- 1:46:49Speaker 6: And I don't like to call her. She's misinformed at times,
- 1:46:54Speaker 6: very misinformed.
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: I don't like personal attacks on this kind of stuff.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: I got one guy who constantly emails me, and it's like,
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: you know what? He sends me so damn many emails.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: It's like, get off your lazy ass and call a show, basically.
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: So I don't even read his because he doesn't have
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: the balls to call a show, so call it.
- 1:47:14Speaker 7: That's a lot of Facebook, Rob.
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: People can attack you on Facebook all day long, but
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: then you see him on the street, and it's like,
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: And I love to have conversation. And I'm very– I
- 1:47:28Speaker 6: talk to anybody. I'll take any call. I'll take any criticism.
- 1:47:32Speaker 6: And I'll tell you my point. And I don't have
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: to argue with you.
- 1:47:35Speaker 5: We'll disagree.
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: And that's okay.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: Not everybody's opinion is the same.
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: But you've got to be– you've got to have– you
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: also have to listen and admit at times, okay, now
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: I've got a better opinion or a more informed opinion
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: because now I have– a different side of it. Listen,
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: I think you made a lot of, I do think
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: you made a lot of good points today. I'm the
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: first guy to admit if I, if I'm wrong on
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: something and I'd be more than happy to, to do that.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: Cause I'm used to, I'm used to admitting I've been wrong.
- 1:48:06Speaker 7: I'm wrong.
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: Like I said, even about 10 seconds. Cause I like,
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: I like leaving on a little happy, funny note.
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:48:11Speaker 6: About, about, about four weeks ago, my wife had told
- 1:48:15Speaker 6: me and other people said, man, you look great on TV.
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: Your beer looks great. Well, I go into the shower.
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: I thought I'm gonna go, get my shower. I go
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: into the shower.
- 1:48:21Speaker 3: I look at my face.
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: I says, yeah, I'm going to shave. I shaved my beard.
- 1:48:24Speaker 6: I've had my beard for about seven years, right? I
- 1:48:26Speaker 6: come out of the bathroom and we have a very
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: small house, very small living room. My wife's on the couch.
- 1:48:31Speaker 6: I'm in my chair and we're talking for about, we're
- 1:48:33Speaker 6: talking 10 minutes.
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: I said, Shelly, really?
- 1:48:35Speaker 7: And she said, what?
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: I says, really?
- 1:48:38Speaker 6: I said, you didn't notice I shaved? She goes, oh,
- 1:48:40Speaker 6: I never look at you when I talk to you.
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: And I said, I never listen when you talk. So
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: that's 43 years of marriage. That's what it gets you.
- 1:48:48Speaker 6: He never looked at me.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: Here's the secret, Gino, as I go from 68 to
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: 69 before too long. I've removed all the mirrors in
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: my house because of the old guy looking back at me.
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: And you might want to get there. You're going to
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: get there someday.
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: I'll send you a picture.
- 1:49:05Speaker 6: That's what I see when I look in the mirror.
- 1:49:07Speaker 6: But I'm lying to myself.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: I know that.
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: But I look at a guy, and I look at
- 1:49:10Speaker 6: myself when I was 22. I was happy.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: You say, what the hell happened?
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: You know, all right.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: Hey, listen, I appreciate you coming on. I hope you'll
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: come on again. And I think that communication as to
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: what you're thinking is and what others are thinking and discussions.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: I'm not interested in debates. I'm interested in discussions. And
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: I think that's what we try to have happen here today.
- 1:49:37Speaker 6: We're going to be very transparent with this build. I'll
- 1:49:38Speaker 6: tell you, there's going to be a website. There's going
- 1:49:40Speaker 6: to be all kind of, it's going to be very transparent.
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: Where the money is, what we're doing, what the progress
- 1:49:46Speaker 6: we're making as far as what roads are going to
- 1:49:47Speaker 6: be closed and when, it's going to be very transparent.
- 1:49:50Speaker 6: We're not going to have happen what happened with the
- 1:49:53Speaker 6: other project that was downtown. I think people, at the
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: end of the day, people will appreciate it. And they'll
- 1:49:58Speaker 6: see the need and the worth. But I appreciate your
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: time this afternoon.
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: I really do. Thanks. Appreciate it, Gino. All right. I
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: thought it was a very productive afternoon. I thought Rich
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: handled himself well. I think Gino handled himself well. I
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: think it was a good discussion. Not debate, discussion. That's
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: the way it should be, and I'll be right back.
- 1:50:22Speaker 22: For 50 years, Sherrod Brown voted how he was told.
- 1:50:25Speaker 22: 1975 to today, different presidents, different issues, but Sherrod Brown's
- 1:50:31Speaker 22: vote never changed. Higher taxes, Brown voted for them. Open borders,
- 1:50:36Speaker 22: Brown voted for them. Sex changes for kids, Sherrod Brown
- 1:50:41Speaker 22: supported that too. When Washington Democrats needed Brown's vote, he
- 1:50:45Speaker 22: gave it every time. Sherrod Brown voted with Biden 97 percent.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: Schumer, 95. Bernie Sanders, 92.
- 1:50:55Speaker 22: That was the Democrat Party he joined 50 years ago.
- 1:50:58Speaker 22: But times have changed. Now, extremists are taking over. They're
- 1:51:03Speaker 22: not asking for your vote. They're coming for your country.
- 1:51:06Speaker 22: And Sherrod Brown.
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: Will fall in line. He always does. Sherrod Brown. Times changed.
- 1:51:13Speaker 8: His vote never does.
- 1:51:15Speaker 22: Paid for by SLF PAC and not authorized by any
- 1:51:17Speaker 22: candidate or candidates to committee.
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: SLF PAC dot org. SLF PAC is responsible for the
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: content of this ad. Hey, WKBN. There you go. News
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: Radio 570 WKBN and Ron Furb 525 here. In the afternoon,
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: and you're on the air. Hello. You're on the air.
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: Hey, Ron, I've got a question for you.
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: Now that you had a little conversation with Gino, tell
- 1:51:44Speaker 3: me what your beef is with Carol Rigetti and Anthony Trafficante.
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: Other than they don't call your show, what is your
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: beef with them?
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: My beef with them would be exactly what you mentioned.
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: It's my personal view that I think you have a duty,
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: and I think Gino fulfills that. I think Dave Thomas
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: fulfills that. I think it is your duty as a
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: public servant to communicate with the people that you are serving.
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: And it's difficult for me to say this because it
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: sounds egotistical. I don't mean it to sound that way.
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: But you're not going to find a larger audience or
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: a better or bigger audience to communicate with your constituents
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: than you will find here.
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: Well, Ron, let me put it to you this way.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: No, wait a minute. You asked me a question, and
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: I'm still answering it.
- 1:52:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: All right? So you want to know my answer? I
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: don't know what you're doing or what you've done or
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: are planning to do if you don't communicate it. If
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: you're going to be in public service, you have a
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: duty to communicate. I've been here a long time. Pat
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: Angaro would come on on a regular basis. George McKelvey
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: would come here. I say it all the time. McKelvey
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: would sit in that chair. People would call. He would
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: write down their complaints. He would pick up the phone
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: during a commercial break. He would call the office and
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: tell people to go take care of this situation. I
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: watched Pat Ungaro do the same thing. I watched George
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: Tablak that would do it back in the day. I've
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: had people on that agree and disagree with me on
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: a regular basis over the years. So I think it's
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: their duty, and they don't do it, to communicate what
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: they're doing as $ 100, 000- plus employees of yours. to do that. Now,
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: if you don't understand that, that is what your duty is.
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: You don't reach that on podcasts or Facebook or anything else.
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: So that is what my issue is with anybody. Dave
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: Thomas comes on on a regular basis. People now understand
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: what he's doing, what he's done with property taxes. Where
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: do you think they found out that information? On a
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: six o'clock news, on a one minute story? So use
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: your head. I think it's your duty as a public
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: servant to come on. And frankly, the people who don't
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: come on, I'm going to tell you, they're afraid to
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: come on because they're afraid of the questioning. That's where
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: I'm at on it. And if you've got a problem
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: with it, I don't know what to tell you. Then
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: you don't get it.
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: Well, I agree with you. You know, you need transparency.
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: But when you take that away from the picture and
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: you go with the landscape, the political landscape.
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: I'm not taking it away from the picture. That is
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: the picture. Period. You have a duty as a public
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: elected official.
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: Political landscape.
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: Nothing's changed.
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: Geno sees things they do. The same way they do.
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: That's why you don't like them.
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: It's not because they don't call in. Do they communicate?
- 1:54:49Speaker 7: No, no.
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: I don't know what.
- 1:54:51Speaker 3: Listen.
- 1:54:51Speaker 5: And he sees it the same way.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: I don't know what they stand for. You know why
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: I don't know what they stand for? Never hear from them.
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: Don't you get that? Don't you understand that? I'm done
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: with you. I'm done with you. You're on the air.
- 1:55:05Speaker 5: Hey, Ron, way to stand up, brother.
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: No, I mean, you know, stand by for a second,
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: Bubba Ganoush. I get tired of the bull crap of
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: a guy like that. You can call her. You can
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: go kiss whosoever ass you want to kiss. You know,
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: I sit here, these are the public airwaves, and I'm
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: not going to be here forever because I'm an old
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: guy now. You know, I'm not going to be here
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: until I'm 80 years old. It's just not, I'm closer
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: to the end than I am the beginning. But by God,
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: I can tell you what happened in the past with people,
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: and I don't see it happening today. I don't care
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: if I go back, whether I agreed or disagreed. We
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: had on trustees that would call in all the time
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: from Boardman or from Austintown or people from Canfield or
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: whatever would be the case. If you're going to be
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: a public servant, you have a duty to communicate to
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: the public what it is you're doing. And you want
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: to come on. No one knows what these other two
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: are doing because they never communicate a damn thing. They
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: never say, this is what we're doing. This is what
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: I'm thinking. This is where I stand. That is your
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: duty as a public servant, to answer to the public
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: and what you're doing to earn your paycheck. And that
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: will always be my standard, and it's lacking. You can't
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: get it on television. We have the only forum where
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: you can get it. We're blessed by a huge audience.
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: News Radio 570 WKVN.
- 1:56:36Speaker 13: The Columbus Italian Festival returns this weekend with the event
- 1:56:39Speaker 13: kicking off this evening and running through Sunday near St.
- 1:56:41Speaker 13: John the Baptist Catholic Church between North 3rd and 4th Streets.
- 1:56:45Speaker 13: Live music and other entertainment is planned. And of course,
- 1:56:49Speaker 13: great food will be available. Tickets are $ 15 with kids
- 1:56:52Speaker 13: 12 and under admitted free with a paying adult. More
- 1:56:55Speaker 13: information can be found at ColumbusItalianFestival.com. And in the meantime,
- 1:57:01Speaker 13: Caleb Flynn is now moved from jail into the Ohio
- 1:57:04Speaker 13: State prison system. He has been sentenced to life without
- 1:57:07Speaker 13: parole over the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. His
- 1:57:11Speaker 13: name and mugshot have been entered into the Ohio Department
- 1:57:14Speaker 13: of Rehabilitation and Corrections database ahead of his permanent placement.
- 1:57:19Speaker 13: Flynn has maintained his innocence throughout the trial before he
- 1:57:22Speaker 13: was convicted, and his attorneys have filed a notice of appeal.
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: I'm Brady Hopkins.
- 1:57:27Speaker 11: Listen on the free iHeartRadio app for all your music, news, talk,
- 1:57:31Speaker 11: and sports radio.
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: Podcasts, too. Download the app. Free never sounded so good.
- 1:57:37Speaker 8: A to Z dependable services. Plumbing, septic, heating, cooling, and
- 1:57:41Speaker 8: one-day baths. Construction delays continue on.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: now ron verb on news radio 570 wkbn.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: Is uh you know when i hear guys like the
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: last guy you you have all of you have to
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: remember something these people ask here's the strange things you
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: shouldn't just hear from these people when they're asking for
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: your vote when it comes election time all of a
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: sudden election time, they want to knock on your door
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: or leave a leaflet on your door when they're running
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: for office. And the next thing you know, if they
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: get elected, you never hear from them again until it's
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: election time again. That to me is a phoniness and
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: I don't have much respect for it. And I never have.
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: And that's why I sit here, and as I've said,
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: I've been around a long time, and I've watched over
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: the years. And I've watched great communicators like Pat Angaro,
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: who would sit, just as Gino did today, and answer
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: questions for hours. And answer them honestly without any spin.
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: He just was kind of a down-to-earth guy. I dwell
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: on it all the time. And when I would watch
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: George McKelvey, and that's exactly what George McKelvey didn't refer
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: to you as a voter. He referred to you as
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: a customer. And he wrote down what people's complaints were.
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: And you know what he tried to do? Solve them
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: to the best of his ability. I watched Jim traffic
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: and come in numerous times and even a host when
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: we were off and answer constituents questions on a regular
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: basis on this radio station. I mean, I could go,
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: I could go on and on and on, on that.
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: And even people that I've had huge disagreements with would,
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: would likewise do the same things. So it's what I
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: tell everybody. This isn't prerecorded. This is live. This is
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: real life. This is live and it's real life, what's
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: going on here. And when people send me emails, well,
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: how can I get on the program to make my point?
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: My response remains the same. You pick up your damn
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: phone and you call. It's real easy. You know, I
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: get I got I got some emails from these people from,
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: you know, that are that are with the pro levy
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: and can the city of Canfield. How can we get
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: on a show? And I want to pull my hair
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: out and say, well, you pick up the damn phone
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: and you call like everybody else. That's how you get
- 2:00:39Speaker 2: on the show. It's not that difficult. That's why we
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: give out numbers. I had several emails from people. Well,
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: we want to make our case for the levy in Canfield. Well,
- 2:00:51Speaker 2: pick up the phone and call. Just as everybody else does.
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: Or anybody else. But when people get elected to these offices,
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: they disappear in many cases. Other than collect a paycheck,
- 2:01:11Speaker 2: you can't think of anything they've done. I believe you
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: have a duty to say, here's where I'm at, here's
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: what I'm doing, here's what I'm thinking. And there's nothing
- 2:01:28Speaker 2: to stop any of them from calling in and doing that.
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: And I think they have a duty. I don't give
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: a damn if you're Congressman Rooley. I don't care if
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: you're Trafficante or Carol Rigetti. or trustees or mayors or
- 2:01:48Speaker 2: whoever the hell you are. That's what forums are all about,
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: to communicate to your constituents. And when you do a
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: program that's live and when you do a program that
- 2:02:01Speaker 2: can take calls, that benefits even more. I'm for more
- 2:02:06Speaker 2: of whatever you can do. I don't care what forum
- 2:02:09Speaker 2: it is, whether that's... There's not a lot of.
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: So much limited that you can even do on Facebook.
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: But I mean, as far as live forums, I don't
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: care if it's podcast, I don't care if it's radio,
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: I don't care if it's TV, but most of them
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: can't devote hours of time. But we can hear. And
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: that's why I say, and I mean it sincerely, it's
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: difficult for me to It's difficult for me to say
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: this because it sounds bad. I'm not here to toot
- 2:02:45Speaker 2: my own horn or make it sound like it is,
- 2:02:47Speaker 2: but it's a huge audience. And we're blessed by it.
- 2:02:50Speaker 2: I mean, it's a great radio station with a huge
- 2:02:53Speaker 2: signal that's been around 100 years with a large listening audience.
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: That we are blessed with. Well, that's how you talk
- 2:03:03Speaker 2: to the majority of your constituents. I don't know what else.
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: That's all I can do for all of you. Nothing more,
- 2:03:20Speaker 2: nothing less. Do it for a while. Not going to
- 2:03:25Speaker 2: be around forever, you know, because you get old. Here's
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: a shocker. Life goes by in a blink of an
- 2:03:31Speaker 2: eye and it goes by very quickly. And it's going
- 2:03:35Speaker 2: by very quickly for me. You know, at some point
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: you decide, okay. I'm going to take a break and
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: take a rest or whatever and spend some more time
- 2:03:44Speaker 2: with my family, my wife, because I spend a lot
- 2:03:47Speaker 2: of time here. But that's not happening today or tomorrow
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: or next week. As long as iHeart gives me this
- 2:03:56Speaker 2: great opportunity and a great paycheck, I'll show up. You're
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: on the air. Hello.
- 2:04:04Speaker 5: Well, I say that I'm going to go for the
- 2:04:08Speaker 5: Browns to win, the Guardians to win, and Ohio State
- 2:04:11Speaker 5: to win.
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: Could you believe it last night? Could you believe what
- 2:04:15Speaker 2: a game. What a Guardians game.
- 2:04:18Speaker 6: It was great, wasn't it?
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: Yes, it was. It was a high. When did they
- 2:04:25Speaker 2: play again?
- 2:04:25Speaker 5: Did they play in tonight?
- 2:04:26Speaker 2: Saturday. Saturday. Saturday evening. And if they win, it would
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: be unbelievable to me. What a great game. Tom Hamilton
- 2:04:39Speaker 2: is so great at calling that game in a post-game
- 2:04:41Speaker 2: show with Rosie. Just phenomenal. What a great game.
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: They're great people.
- 2:04:46Speaker 23: Yeah.
- 2:04:47Speaker 2: And, boy, I'll be listening to the Browns on 93.3,
- 2:04:50Speaker 2: our sister station, the Wolf Home of Rover's Morning Glory.
- 2:04:54Speaker 2: So I'll be listening to the– I listen more than
- 2:04:57Speaker 2: I watch this stuff because I'm busy doing other stuff.
- 2:04:59Speaker 5: I mean– I think Andrew Siciliano is doing a good job.
- 2:05:03Speaker 3: Don't you think so?
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: Yes, I think he's done an excellent job. Jimmy Donovan
- 2:05:07Speaker 2: was great. Unfortunately, his health didn't hold up.
- 2:05:09Speaker 3: Oh, I love Jimmy Donovan. He was a legend.
- 2:05:11Speaker 2: But Siciliano's filling the very big shoes. I agree. All right,
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: my friend.
- 2:05:17Speaker 5: Take care.
- 2:05:17Speaker 3: Have a good week.
- 2:05:18Speaker 2: Dick from Dayton. You're on the air.
- 2:05:21Speaker 7: Hello, Ron.
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:05:24Speaker 4: I'm here to just lighten things up a little bit.
- 2:05:27Speaker 4: It's about something you talked about yesterday when you were
- 2:05:29Speaker 4: at the airport.
- 2:05:30Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:05:31Speaker 20: What did I talk about?
- 2:05:33Speaker 4: Well, there was a gentleman that wasn't.
- 2:05:36Speaker 2: Oh, this was on Monday. He was a gentleman. He
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: was a guy dressed up as a woman.
- 2:05:41Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:05:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:05:43Speaker 4: Well, I'm in the Pittsburgh airport, and I'm going up
- 2:05:45Speaker 4: the escalator. And in front of me, there's this guy
- 2:05:51Speaker 4: with the shortest skirt I've ever seen and the highest
- 2:05:54Speaker 4: heels I've ever seen. And I'm thinking, well, that's interesting.
- 2:05:57Speaker 4: So I get on the plane, and they said, do
- 2:06:00Speaker 4: you want to sit in the emergency row? And I said, sure.
- 2:06:03Speaker 4: And guess who my partner was?
- 2:06:05Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 2:06:08Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 2:06:09Speaker 4: And he was scared to death of flying. So I'm
- 2:06:12Speaker 4: sitting there, and I'm going, well, you know, as long
- 2:06:14Speaker 4: as we break through the clouds, we'll be doing good.
- 2:06:17Speaker 4: And he was really nervous, and it was interesting. And
- 2:06:20Speaker 4: it kind of goes back to what your mom talked about.
- 2:06:23Speaker 4: If you plant a seed, you know, you go to church.
- 2:06:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll tell you what really drives me crazy, though,
- 2:06:30Speaker 2: and it drives me absolutely berserk. To where, you know,
- 2:06:36Speaker 2: I'm at this close to going up to you and
- 2:06:38Speaker 2: saying what should be said. When people are coughing and
- 2:06:43Speaker 2: they don't cover their mouth, and I see it all
- 2:06:46Speaker 2: the damn time in the store, and this was a
- 2:06:51Speaker 2: case in the airport and on a plane, it's like,
- 2:06:54Speaker 2: cover your mouth. Stop. I mean, you know, do I
- 2:06:59Speaker 2: have to tell you this? And I'm to the point
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: where I'm ready to tell them that. But we'll see.
- 2:07:06Speaker 4: I wasn't going to go that far. I was just
- 2:07:08Speaker 4: talking to him about it.
- 2:07:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:07:10Speaker 4: Well, about flying and how it wasn't that bad. And
- 2:07:13Speaker 4: I'm saying it's talking about where would you want to
- 2:07:16Speaker 4: go if you could go someplace?
- 2:07:17Speaker 2: It's just weird. It's just weird. I got to tell
- 2:07:21Speaker 2: you there.
- 2:07:22Speaker 4: It's like, well, he wasn't coughing.
- 2:07:24Speaker 2: He was just, I know, but I mean, you're a guy,
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: you're a guy. You don't look like a woman. You
- 2:07:29Speaker 2: don't have feminine features. I mean, I don't know what
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: to tell you. Stop wearing a skirt. I mean, I
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: look at Bruce Jenner and it's like Bruce Jenner dressed
- 2:07:37Speaker 2: as a woman, not Caitlin. That's ridiculous.
- 2:07:40Speaker 5: I know.
- 2:07:40Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:07:41Speaker 4: That I don't get at all. However, I don't know.
- 2:07:44Speaker 4: You know, the more you talk to them, the more
- 2:07:47Speaker 4: the flight before that I had sat next to a
- 2:07:49Speaker 4: guy from Mexico.
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: People are people. I'm not opposed to.
- 2:07:54Speaker 4: I know.
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: Listen, being kind is not something that's wrong. but don't
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: be kind and taken advantage of. Sometimes you got to
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: crack the whip.
- 2:08:04Speaker 5: He didn't.
- 2:08:05Speaker 4: He didn't try to judge me at all.
- 2:08:08Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:08:08Speaker 6: Which I thought he was going to, but he didn't.
- 2:08:10Speaker 4: And that was really.
- 2:08:11Speaker 6: Good of him.
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to judge you, you old battle axe.
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: I'm older than you, so you can say that and
- 2:08:19Speaker 4: get away with it.
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: Really?
- 2:08:22Speaker 4: Don't you go through chapters in your life and you think, oh,
- 2:08:25Speaker 4: that was a good chapter?
- 2:08:27Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you what you go through. Life
- 2:08:30Speaker 2: does truly go by in the blink of an eye.
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: I'm here to tell everybody.
- 2:08:34Speaker 4: I tell people that all the time.
- 2:08:37Speaker 2: And it's going by very quickly. I have two older brothers,
- 2:08:42Speaker 2: and it just goes by very quickly. I'm watching the children.
- 2:08:47Speaker 2: They're all adults. I remember my mother said, I just
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: want to stick around and see what happens to them.
- 2:08:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: Is that the truth?
- 2:08:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:08:56Speaker 4: Okay. Well, have a good rest of your day.
- 2:08:58Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you for calling. You're on the air.
- 2:09:01Speaker 3: Ron. Yes.
- 2:09:04Speaker 7: They have to call in and wait in line like
- 2:09:07Speaker 7: all of us.
- 2:09:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:09:09Speaker 7: Because if they don't, you know what that's saying? Like
- 2:09:11Speaker 7: when people say, you know, how do I get on
- 2:09:13Speaker 7: and just tell you what I want to say? I
- 2:09:15Speaker 7: don't want to hear a word you have to say.
- 2:09:17Speaker 7: I just want to tell you what's on my mind.
- 2:09:18Speaker 7: Isn't that what they're kind of saying when they do that?
- 2:09:25Speaker 2: Well, I guess. I don't know. It's a discussion. It's
- 2:09:31Speaker 2: a conversation.
- 2:09:32Speaker 5: Well, that's my point.
- 2:09:34Speaker 2: And let me tell you, Rich and Gino had a conversation.
- 2:09:38Speaker 2: I learned a lot from both of them. I thought
- 2:09:40Speaker 2: it was a very productive day.
- 2:09:42Speaker 7: Yeah, they did.
- 2:09:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:09:45Speaker 7: I learned more about both of them today.
- 2:09:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:09:48Speaker 7: So that was interesting. Yeah, I listened to it. It
- 2:09:50Speaker 7: was good.
- 2:09:51Speaker 2: Hey, Ron.
- 2:09:52Speaker 3: You know, the....
- 2:09:56Speaker 7: Did you see that site that I sent you for
- 2:09:59Speaker 7: WRTA that shows you where all the buses are and
- 2:10:02Speaker 7: how full they are? I just thought you'd find that interesting.
- 2:10:05Speaker 7: That way I don't have to tell you. You can
- 2:10:07Speaker 7: look on there anytime and see how many people are
- 2:10:09Speaker 7: on a bus or at that.
- 2:10:11Speaker 2: The thing I find most interesting is your project. That's
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: just the kind of guy I am.
- 2:10:20Speaker 3: Good?
- 2:10:20Speaker 2: The brick stuff.
- 2:10:22Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, it's still going good. In fact, I was
- 2:10:25Speaker 7: just out back today because it was nice. I have
- 2:10:28Speaker 7: a bunch of bricks that I buried in the border
- 2:10:32Speaker 7: of a garden, which I don't use anymore. And so
- 2:10:36Speaker 7: I've been visiting back there and going and digging them
- 2:10:38Speaker 7: out of the ground because once the ground freezes, it'll
- 2:10:40Speaker 7: be too hard to do. So I've just been getting
- 2:10:42Speaker 7: them and setting them there so later I can work
- 2:10:45Speaker 7: on them.
- 2:10:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:10:47Speaker 7: I appreciate that you keep track. My one neighbor, she said,
- 2:10:53Speaker 7: your driveway is a work of art.
- 2:10:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: And it's a lot of work.
- 2:11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it is.
- 2:11:02Speaker 7: I had to take like four or five days off
- 2:11:04Speaker 7: because my hands were so sore. My knuckles were so sore.
- 2:11:08Speaker 7: I was afraid I wouldn't be able to play the guitar.
- 2:11:09Speaker 3: So I'm healing.
- 2:11:10Speaker 7: I'm almost ready to go back out and do some more.
- 2:11:13Speaker 7: But I had to take a little time off.
- 2:11:14Speaker 2: He's the guru of Gerard. I appreciate you. You know that.
- 2:11:18Speaker 7: Have a great weekend, Rod.
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: Thank you. You're on the air. Hello. You're on the air. Hello.
- 2:11:28Speaker 7: Hello.
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: You're on the air.
- 2:11:30Speaker 5: Strike three called.
- 2:11:33Speaker 15: Ball game.
- 2:11:36Speaker 5: Wasn't that a great game?
- 2:11:37Speaker 6: I love it.
- 2:11:39Speaker 5: Tom Hamilton.
- 2:11:41Speaker 3: Are you there?
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: Yes, I am here. Go ahead.
- 2:11:47Speaker 5: Okay, first of all, Ron, you're right. You got 50,000 listeners.
- 2:11:51Speaker 5: And you know how you start the program. You're talking,
- 2:11:55Speaker 5: we're listening to 570 WKBN. So if they're too lazy
- 2:12:01Speaker 5: to call in and stay on the phone like I
- 2:12:03Speaker 5: do for an hour and a half, that's their problem.
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: Now, how many times now?
- 2:12:11Speaker 3: Now, listen.
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: How many times have you and I agreed and disagreed
- 2:12:15Speaker 2: and hooted and hollered at each other, but we still
- 2:12:18Speaker 2: love and respect each other, even though you don't have
- 2:12:20Speaker 2: a leg to stand on?
- 2:12:22Speaker 5: Well, you know, I was thinking of one person I
- 2:12:24Speaker 5: know would call you Christine Oliver when she becomes a commissioner.
- 2:12:31Speaker 2: If she's successful, I think she will. I would agree
- 2:12:33Speaker 2: with that.
- 2:12:34Speaker 5: She's a nice girl. I talk to her all the time.
- 2:12:37Speaker 2: Well, that's a good thing. I'm glad that you feel
- 2:12:39Speaker 2: that way.
- 2:12:42Speaker 5: No, I'm doing this ballot over here. And, you know,
- 2:12:46Speaker 5: this kind of go through this ballot. And, yeah, this
- 2:12:51Speaker 5: is a simple ballot, you know.
- 2:12:52Speaker 2: Well, you're a simple man.
- 2:12:55Speaker 5: No, I mean, to pick who to pick, you know.
- 2:12:59Speaker 5: I mean, Michael Rowley, yeah. John Huston, yeah.
- 2:13:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:13:04Speaker 5: You know, like people like that. You know, it's a no-brainer.
- 2:13:07Speaker 6: Vivek, yeah.
- 2:13:07Speaker 10: Yep.
- 2:13:09Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:13:10Speaker 5: So I like what you said. There's no way, no way.
- 2:13:13Speaker 5: You sounded like Jackie Gleason from that show where he
- 2:13:18Speaker 5: was chasing that guy. What was that called?
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: The Honeymooners.
- 2:13:22Speaker 5: No, no. He was a police officer chasing that guy.
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: I don't know who you're talking about.
- 2:13:30Speaker 5: Smokey and the Bandit.
- 2:13:31Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 2:13:31Speaker 5: And he said to his son, dang, no way, no
- 2:13:35Speaker 5: way that I'm voting for a Democrat.
- 2:13:37Speaker 7: I love what you said.
- 2:13:41Speaker 2: Well, it's the crazy-ass agenda that they have. This idea that, well,
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: I'm upset with the gas prices, so I'm going to
- 2:13:49Speaker 2: go vote for Democrats. They hate fossil fuels. Trump had
- 2:13:52Speaker 2: to get rid of all the regulations. They didn't want
- 2:13:54Speaker 2: you to be able to drill offshore, drill on federal lands.
- 2:13:56Speaker 5: They shut down the refineries, like you said.
- 2:14:00Speaker 2: You think I'm going to go back to that?
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:14:04Speaker 2: I'm not going back to that. I'm not stupid. Well,
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: I might be stupid, but I know how to vote right.
- 2:14:14Speaker 7: I'm voting now.
- 2:14:15Speaker 5: Yeah. But listen, listen, listen.
- 2:14:19Speaker 2: I mean, don't you ever forget, I even made the
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: journey and had Mediterranean food for the first time for you.
- 2:14:25Speaker 2: Don't you forget that.
- 2:14:27Speaker 5: No, no, you can't. Yeah, you came to my church.
- 2:14:28Speaker 3: Listen.
- 2:14:30Speaker 5: I've got to tell you something. I was watching TBS,
- 2:14:33Speaker 5: you know, because that's when the.
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: Game was on, TBS. Last night? Hang on a second.
- 2:14:37Speaker 2: Hang on. I've got to talk to you about that.
- 2:14:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I've got to tell you something.
- 2:14:40Speaker 2: All right, hang on. Let me do my break. I'll
- 2:14:41Speaker 2: come back to you in a minute. What a great game.
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: Flying Missions is an air talk station, 570 WKBN.
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: Ron Verb from NewsRadio 570 WKBN. So you were watching
- 2:14:54Speaker 2: TBS and watching the game last night. Go ahead.
- 2:14:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I was watching the game, and there's this guy,
- 2:15:01Speaker 5: Martin Rivera, you know, the Hall of Famer that picks
- 2:15:04Speaker 5: for the Yankees?
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:15:06Speaker 5: And he was there saying, you know, prior to the game,
- 2:15:09Speaker 5: he says, Chicago got to win this one. They got
- 2:15:11Speaker 5: to win this one. And after the game, he said,
- 2:15:15Speaker 5: if they don't win this one, he said, if they
- 2:15:17Speaker 5: go to Cleveland, that's it, they're done. He said, nobody
- 2:15:21Speaker 5: has excitement. Like Cleveland and Jose Ramirez.
- 2:15:26Speaker 2: What a great player. What a great player he is.
- 2:15:28Speaker 2: He's just a joy to watch.
- 2:15:29Speaker 5: You've got to hear what he said. They picked. They said,
- 2:15:32Speaker 5: who do you want to take home with you? And
- 2:15:34Speaker 5: they had four people. And he said, Jose Ramirez. And
- 2:15:37Speaker 5: then he goes, then he starts chanting.
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: He goes, Jose, you know that song? Jose, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:15:45Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he started doing that. This guy's a home
- 2:15:48Speaker 5: of favor.
- 2:15:49Speaker 2: Well, I don't take anything for granted because we shall
- 2:15:53Speaker 2: see what happens. It's going to be a nail-biter, and
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: I'm rooting for the Guardians, but I'm looking forward to it.
- 2:15:58Speaker 5: Can I give you my analysis?
- 2:16:01Speaker 2: Not really. They're running out.
- 2:16:03Speaker 5: Of pitchers, okay, or at least the energy to pitch.
- 2:16:07Speaker 5: You understand? Now, I saw Kate Smith run out of energy.
- 2:16:12Speaker 5: Last night, and they took them out, thank God.
- 2:16:15Speaker 2: Well, what about me? It's Friday. I'm running out of energy.
- 2:16:17Speaker 2: They're going to take me out at 6 o'clock. Now, listen,
- 2:16:21Speaker 2: do it real quick for me. Tom Hamilton, end of
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: the game.
- 2:16:26Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:16:27Speaker 5: Tonight, end of the game. Strike three, call, ball game.
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: I love it when he does that. I just love it.
- 2:16:36Speaker 2: Is that good?
- 2:16:37Speaker 5: Did I do okay, Ron?
- 2:16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I just love it. All right, man. Thanks. Appreciate it.
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: You're on the air. Hello.
- 2:16:43Speaker 27: Yeah, go Tribe. I feel like a kid again, Ron.
- 2:16:46Speaker 27: What a game last night. I'm going to have to
- 2:16:49Speaker 27: take a nap Saturday afternoon because that game ended at
- 2:16:53Speaker 27: 10 minutes to midnight last night.
- 2:16:57Speaker 2: You know... It was great.
- 2:16:59Speaker 27: I'm getting too old for this. But I love it.
- 2:17:02Speaker 27: I love it.
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: What a great weekend. Go Browns, too, man. The Browns
- 2:17:06Speaker 2: are having a decent year so far. I know.
- 2:17:08Speaker 27: We're in first place.
- 2:17:10Speaker 4: Can you believe that?
- 2:17:11Speaker 2: Four games, we're in first place. You can listen to
- 2:17:13Speaker 2: the Browns on our sister station, 93.3, The Wolf, Home
- 2:17:17Speaker 2: of Rovers, Morning Glory. And you can listen to the
- 2:17:19Speaker 2: Guardians right here Saturday.
- 2:17:21Speaker 27: I don't need aspirin or statins anymore. The blood pressure
- 2:17:25Speaker 27: is just pumping my veins clean.
- 2:17:28Speaker 2: Next thing you know, it's, oh, never mind. All right.
- 2:17:31Speaker 2: Have a great weekend in Rock Creek, Ohio. I appreciate
- 2:17:35Speaker 2: you listening and putting up with me. I appreciate you
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: putting up with me. I appreciate you listening. I appreciate
- 2:17:39Speaker 2: you calling. Ron Furb from the Kingdom of Mahoning, wishing
- 2:17:42Speaker 2: you a wonderful and terrific weekend. And we'll regroup, Lord willing,
- 2:17:47Speaker 2: as they say, Monday at 3 o'clock. on NewsRadio 570 WKBN,
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: the mighty 570 WKBN. 100 years we've been around. That's
- 2:17:59Speaker 2: a long time.
